Wildlife encounter at Crocodile Park
By Jojie Alcantara
Witerary

THE crocodiles of Davao are happily heading for Luzon via the Davao Crocodile Park Road Show and Wildlife Encounter!

Six months ago, this brainchild of businessman Sonny Dizon was created out of the blue. If Davao Crocodile Park caters to Mindanaoans where busloads of people from neighboring cities travel far and wide just to marvel at the interesting mix of exotic flora and fauna here, why not bring these species to Manila?

Pushing its aim in conserving and preserving wildlife, Davao Crocodile Park Incorporated plans to educate more people by bringing its finest animals to let Manileños experience and understand more about endangered animals, particularly the Philippine freshwater crocodile.

The Davao Crocodile Park Road Show and Wildlife Encounter is an educational show that will impart information on the conservation of endangered animals in our country and the world. Audience will have a truly "hands on" experience as they touch, feel, and take photos of amazing animals they may have only seen on TV.

They will be oriented about each species' role in the ecosystem.

Around 200 crocodiles of various sizes and species from 2 to 17 ft. will be brought to Luzon, showcased with 28 other exotic animals that will be animal ambassadors and messengers of wildlife conservation.

The show is aimed to educate the public how endangered animals deserved to be treated humanely and correctly. It will be launched on December 1, 2007 at Boom na Boom, Roxas Boluevard, Pasay City, and will run until February 28, after which the show will be on the road again to San Fernando, Pampanga from March to June.

The Davao Crocodile Park Inc. is a privately owned rescue unit of wildlife animals. Presently the DCPI has 43 Philippine Freshwater Crocodile (Crocodylus mendorensis) protecting and conserving this critically endangered crocodile.

In August 3, 2007, with painstaking effort and care, the Davao Crocodile Park moved 43 Philippine Freshwater Crocodiles to the Mandug Conservation area.

The Mandug Conservation area is a large, freshwater pond and a more natural environment for the critically endangered species. This move was done in hopes of increasing hatchability rate and the survival rate of the Philippine Freshwater Crocodile.

SOUTH BORDER main man Jay Durias is finally giving the music world a touch uniquely his own via a solo album dubbed Songs I Grew Up With, produced under new label Open Mic Records and distributed by Star Records. And no, this project should not be given any color. The solo project has the full lessings of his bandmates and is in no way an indication that he’s leaving the band.

I am not going solo. There is no truth that I am leaving South Border with the relase of this album. It’s something personal, something I have worked long and hard for, “ intones Durias.

This CD is a collection of carefully chosen ditties which have made quite an impact in Durias’s young life. Songs I Grew Up With contains 10 tracks.
Before we dismiss the album as just another bunch of chopped covers, one must realize that these songs represent memories. Hence, unlike other albums that either try to match the original artists’ high notes or try to focus on the songs’ commercial appeal, the songs in this album are stamped with candor, warmth and individuality. Because Durias sings them honestly and from the heart, the songs become different. Every song has new details and Durias’s genuine artistry reflects on each song

Songs I Grew Up With boasts of a lot of attitude, beautifully re-arranged tunes and solid, powerful vocal varieties. The album can be considered a journey of sorts. From the days when Durias was still searching for his place in Davao up to the time when South Border started to hit gold with one hit song after another. The popular keyboardist, composer, arranger and musical director is instrumental in the timeless hits of the group including “Rainbow,” “Love of My Life” and “Kahit Kailan,” and “Habang Atin Ang Gabi.”

Let it be emphasized, however, that Songs I Grew Up With is not just a showcase of Durias’s arranging skills—although for sure industry experts will agree that the album can and has now set the rules, if not raise the bar, in terms of musical arrangements. Vocals-wise, the album can be considered a treasure trove of sorts.

The new CD, with all its artful arrangement, smooth vocal power and meticulous choice of significant tracks, has all the ingredients of hard work, talent, ingenuity and yes, commercial success.http://www.manilatimes.net/images2/etc/dot.gif

FREESTYLE: NEW, IMPROVED & ‘LIVE’ Cuts

1. Someone 2. I Just Can't Stop Loving You 3. Still 4. Changes In My Life 5. Half Crazy 6. I Don't Wanna Lose You 7. Time Will Reveal 8. Ebony And Ivory 9. After The Love Has Gone 10. Angel 11. The Girl Is Mine 12. Ordinary People 13. Cherish 14. One Hello

They were part of the first ‘band wave’ in local music. Now, Freestyle is back with new members, a new sound and a new album that will prove they’re still very much in the game.

The album is entitled Freestyle Live @ 19 East, and it is the first recording the band has done with new vocalists Joshua Desiderio and Mike Luis and new bassist Rommel dela Cruz (formerly of Barbie’s Cradle) who replaced original bassist Carlo Tapia, who migrated with his family to Australia last year.

Still with the band are Tat Suzara, Nikki Cabardo, Gerard Banzon and female vocalist Jinky Vidal.

The tracks in the Viva Records-produced album were performed and recorded during the band’s gig at 19 East, hence the title. The lineup includes some of the most requested songs during Freestyle’s live performances, as well as some of the band members’ personal favorites.

The album has generated a lot of excitement among the group's loyal fans. Within a few days of its release, Freestyle Live @ 19 East had already made it to the Top 10 of the Tower Records countdown for best-selling albums and a consistent chart topper on some of the Metro’s leading FM stations.

Freestyle’s manager Celeste Pacana says that plans for the album were first discussed last year. The original plan was to release it in February 2006, in time for Valentine’s Day, which is why the cuts on the album are all love songs. At the farewell dinner for Carlo, the members sat down to suggest songs they could include. More than 20 songs were recorded, but only 14 made it to the final line-up: Someone, I Just Can’t Stop Loving You, Still, Changes In My Life, I Don’t Wanna Lose You, Time Will Reveal, Ebony and Ivory, After the Love Has Gone, Angel, The Girl Is Mine, Ordinary People, Cherish and One Hello.

The 14th song is Half Crazy, the album's carrier single, performed by Joshua, who joined Freestyle in June last year. A smooth-toned vocalist whose musical influences range from Usher to soul-R & B great Stevie Wonder, Joshua has given Freestyle a whole new sound.

Lone female vocalist Jinky Vidal has the perfect words to describe it. “Mas busog ang tunog namin ngayon. I'm so happy, because now, we're capable of doing a lot more musically.”

The album will be given a grand send off on July 21, 8:30PM at the Music Hall, SM Mall of Asia. The album launch is presented by Wave 89.1FM and Viva Records. It will be a big treat for the group's fans, who will not only get the chance to hear the band perform some of the songs from the new album, but also get to meet the new members and have an opportunity for autograph signing as well.

The band will also make in-store visits and holding autograph-signing sessions at the following record stores: on July 1, they’ll be at Odyssey North EDSA (4PM), Astrovision North EDSA (4:30PM), SM North Department Store (5PM) and Radio City North EDSA (5:30PM).

On July 2, you can catch them at Tower Records Megamall (4PM), Odyssey Megamall (4:30PM), Astrovision Megamall (5PM), SM Megamall Department Store (5:30PM) and Odyssey Eastwood (6PM).

The third leg of their promo tour kicks off on July 14 at Tower Records Makati (4PM), Landmark (4:30PM), Music One Greenbelt (5:30PM) and O-Music Greenbelt (6PM).

After this album, Freestyle intends to go back to doing what it has always been known for: its original songs. They've done four songs so far, and are looking forward to writing more.

With the addition of its new members and a better, fuller sound, Freestyle is raring to make its presence felt again.

Catch the new and improved Freestyle in its new album, Freestyle Live @ 19 East, now available at all major record stores nationwide, from Viva Records.

FREESTYLE BAND

The band with a string of most requested love, pop and R&B hits; “Before I Let You Go”, “This Time”, “So Slow” and “Bakit Ngayon Ka Lang” surprises the music scene with a phenomenal new album that proves that Freestyle is and and will always stay on top their game.

Freestyle Vocals: Jinky Vidal Guitar: Richard Felix Rocha Suzara (tat) Bass: Carlo Pacheco Tapia Drums: Gerald Banzon Keyboard: Nicolas Cabardo

Freestyle is from Davao.

They played their first gigs at the APO View Hotel in Davao. The band was formed by Tat Suzara and Jinky Vidal back in 1996. Tat asked his cousin Top to provide male vocals. They formed Freestyle with members Top Suzara (guitars, male vocals), Jinky Vidal (female vocals), Tat Suzara (lead guitars), Carlo Tapia (bass), Gerard Banzon (drums) and Obet Luzon (keyboards). They submitted a demo tape to Viva Records.

They went to Manila and was signed into Neo Records, a company of Viva Records. Later, they released their first self-titled album. It released the hits Before I Let You Go and So Slow. By 1998, they released their second LP, Freestyle This Time. At that time, Nikki Cabardo replaced Obet Luzon. This album released hits such as Down and Funky, 'Til I Found You, This Time.

Freestyle received a very pleasant reaction from the Filipino crowd so by October of 2000, they were able to play in Araneta Coliseum for their first major concert which was entitled Freestyle Live. It was a great show with artists Pops Fernandez, Gary Valenciano and Andrew E. as their special guests.

By February 14, 2001, they were able to play again in the Big Dome with the divine diva, ZsaZsa Padilla and Asia's nightingale, Lani Misalucha for the sensational Love Concert. The Filipino crowd still couldn't get enough of Freestyle so by April 28, 2001, they performed with Janno Gibbs and ZsaZsa Padilla at the Ynares Gym in Antipolo for the High On Love Concert. Not only that, they also had Freestyle On Fire last June 15 & 16, 2001 and Freestyle On Full Swing last June 29 & 30, 2001 at the Music Museum.

Previously, they rocked the Big Dome again last August 10, 2001 with special guests Ogie Alcasid and Aiza Seguerra for their concert Freestyle: All Hits and Symphony in F last November 24,2001 with the Manila Philharmonic Orchestra. And this year, they filled up the seats of Araneta Coliseum in their Back 2 Back series with Side A for four unforgettable nights-Feb 8,9 and 22 and March 23,2002.

With gigs everywhere, shows in 8th Day, Hard Rock Cafe, Makati, Dish, Fat Tuesdays, Nth Degree, Ratsky, Chatterbox, Padi's Point, UFO Planet Rock and in other popular bars in town, numerous guestings, platinum awards and albums, FREESTYLE, without a doubt, is really the hottest band in town and one of the most hardworking bands around.

Let's hear what people say about Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte...

Ricochet By Rene Ezpeleta Bartolo
President Rody: Reactions, reactions
Mindanao Times

Since the column “President Rody Duterte?” saw print on Wednesday, November 21, I have received quite a number of reactions from readers.

I wish to share the feel of the reactions with the reader; I am reprinting them here with minimal comments from me.

In the afternoon of the day the column was published, I received this letter from David Young:

“Although I am an American, I have been to Davao and find it one of the best cities. He has done a lot for that city. Hence, I feel he would be a very good president for the Philippines. One thing for sure crime in the Philippines would go down.”

Early in the evening of the same day, this letter from Henry Palmones:

“Good day Sir: I'm Henry Palmones, I've been reading your column for quite sometime and just recently about the political conflict between Mayor Duterte and Cong.Nograles and the column featured yesterday.

“My email to you is just a support or could perhaps add on to a positive point of view. I was upset to the letter sender of questioning the capacity of Mayor Duterte of becoming the President of the Phils. Maybe he's not from Davao nor a Filipino. Everyone knew of Duterte's credibility.

“To support this fact, I have been attending conferences, workshops and trainings held in Luzon (specifically Baguio, Metro Manila and other key cities in Luzon) and in Visayas.

When they knew that your from davao, they would immediately give salute to you and say 'Wow, I wish I live in that city'. I ask why, most of their reply is that 'Kay maayo inyong mayor, peaceful, ug isa sa pinakasafe na puy-anan sa tibook kalibotan. Nga puede raka magbaktas sa dalan maski sa kadlawan'.

“Going back to questioning the capacity and qualifications of Mayor Duterte of becoming the Philippine President, well, he has actually a lot of it, as you've mentioned in your column yesterday about his qualifications comparing to those really not capable.

“But one thing for sure, I personally support like the rest of Davaoenos Duterte for whatever actions he will do as long as it is for the benefit of everybody.

“Rody Duterte, the next President of the Republic of the Philippines.”

From Ralph Scott Allen, another expatriate (American?), this letter written on Thursday, November 22:

“I agree with Buck that Mayor Duterte is indeed good for Davao and i believe he would be good for the Philippines .

“Mayor Duterte has a difficult job to say the least but in my only dealing with his office, not him personally, my problem was cured and has not surfaced again and i doubt that it will ..

“I am not in fear of Mayor Duterte but i don't make trouble and i am a visitor here and try to keep that in mind ..

“Maybe if he was President the graft would slow down and things would get done ..

“I definitely do not see him as the worst violator of human rights ..from what i have seen he defends humans and human rights ..so what if he has a temper .If any one of us had to deal with the rubbish he does we would also get angry at times ..

But I do not know him personally and at the same time i am sure i owe him a thank you..,,

“If I had a vote it would be Duterte for President ...but I would hate to give him up for the sake of this great city!”

“Just my opinion.”

From Joy Britos, this note received on Friday:

“I agree if he will be the next president there is no more corruption in our government. I will vote for him for sure.”

There are still a number of other comments which I cannot reprint here for lack of physical space. But all these seem to be in agreement: Rody Duterte should be the next president of this country.

MY apologies to all my friends who waited this long for our autocross races here in our city. We are also considering to conduct races in Cebu, Iloilo and Bacolod were in The Racing Line television show is also being aired.

The plan of holding championship series in all the three key regions is also considered. Shago Racing with ace rally driver Danny Santiago and we at 5th Gear Motorsports will work hand-in-hand to make this dream come true.

We are also conducting a race for the motorcycles as well, were in we will be using autocross rules and the track itself will be identical to autocross.

Lapanday closes farm operations
By Carlo P. Mallo

SOME 170 workers will be affected with the closing of the Lapanday Corporation.

Lapanday's banana plantation decides to close down operations in Mandug, Davao City, as the court battle against aerial spraying continues at the Court of Appeals.

The plantation, the company said, would be converted into an industrial and residential area.

"It has been a plan of the company, but with the developments in the past couple of months, things have sped up to convert the plantation," said Lapanday human resources manager Gerardo Ongkingco last Friday.

The workers have already been informed of their termination last November 12, which will become effective on December 13, less than two weeks before Christmas.

In an interview, Ongkingco said the employees would receive a month's salary for every year of service as well as other benefits the company usually gives to terminated employees.

Although Ongkingco would not attribute the layoff solely on the adverse effects of the aerial spray ban on the operations of the banana plantations in the city, he said it is one of the factors.

"Converting the site has been a medium term plan of the company, but the rising costs and low productivity of the area over the past months has urged us to make this decision," Ongkingco said.

The plantation has been designed for aerial spraying and not for truck mounted boom spray. Aerial spraying over the vast plantation has been put on hold due to the aerial spray ban since September 23 this year.

The Pilipino Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) sued the City Government, questioning the constitutionality of the ban.

The Regional Trial Court, however, has ruled in favor of the City Government, underlining health welfare for the greater majority who are exposed to the hazardous chemicals.

PBGEA refused to accept this ruling and has appealed with the Court of Appeals.

Last week, the CA granted a 60-day temporary restraining order. It has also ordered the PBGEA to post a P1-million bond to cover damages suffered by the city.

Fair weather in Davao, as Mina lashes Luzon
By Carlo P. Mallo
Sunstar Davao

AS LUZON braces for stormy weather this week with the onslaught of Super Typhoon "Mina", Davao City and the rest of Southern Mindanao will experience warm fair weather.

Post your comments here on the Batasan blast

However, the region is still not exempted from the wrath of "Mina" with partly cloudy to at times cloudy skies prevalent in the region during the late afternoon. Isolated rain showers and thunderstorms may still be experienced in the evening.

Temperatures in the region will range from a high of 32 degrees Celsius to a low of 24 degrees Celsius. Coastal waters in the region will be from slight to moderate.

Light to moderate winds will be blowing over the region from the Southwestern direction.

In the latest weather update of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, tropical storm "Lando", which has wreaked havoc in Northern Mindanao last week, has returned to the Philippine area of responsibility.

"Lando" was already about to make landfall in Vietnam had it not been for the strong force of super typhoon "Mina". (CPM)

Ateneo enters GS Cup finals
Sunstar Davao

THE Ateneo de Davao University Blue Knights finally entered the Gaisano South Cup College Division 1 finals after nine long years.

Post your comments here on the Batasan blast

Inspired by the presence of ADDU President Fr. Antonio Samson, S.J., the Blue Knights topped the Holy Cross of Davao College Crusaders via a nail biting 80-75 win on Saturday night at the jampacked Gaisano South Sky gym.

Ateneo coach Cholo Elegino, who, for a long time learned the rudiments of coaching from former Ateneo head coach William "Butch" Ramirez, said they are ready for the finals on December 9.

The Jose Maria College Kings and the Agro-Industrial Foundation College Sailors square off for the other final's slot on November 29.

"Both teams are tough contenders. But we have worked so hard this year. I guarantee that we will be ready. We did not wait for nine years and become a bride's maid," Elegino said.

Miguel Solitario powered the Blue Knights to victory with 25 points, 13 rebounds and two assists in the semifinal round of the tournament sponsored by Rexona, Milo, and Axe Sunsport and sanctioned by BAP-Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Regional Director Regino "Boy" Cua.

Kirk James Blanco led the Crusaders with 20 points.

DPWH: Bridge construction to finally start
By Carlo P. Mallo
Sunstar Davao
CONSTRUCTION of the long overdue Governor Generoso Bridge I will commence on November 28, as stipulated in the contract of the Department of Public Works and Highways and the contractor.

The winning contractor, Ciriaco Construction Corporation, reportedly said it will work 24 hours a day to finish the bridge by the end of April.

However, newly installed DPWH-Southern Mindanao chair Jerome Dela Rosa said the project is given 210 days for completion.

"Construction is set from November 28 until June 24 in 2008," Dela Rosa said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao Monday.

The winning bid of only P216 million closed the deal with Ciriaco Construction Corporation.

In a previous interview, DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane has admitted that it was primarily due to his efforts to bring down the cost of the bridge that caused the delay in its construction.

The original construction price of the bridge was pegged at P300 million.

Governor Generoso Bridge I was condemned last April when one of its pillars collapsed. Being one of the main arteries connecting the southern part of the city with the downtown area, traffic has been greatly affected in the entire area.

The multi-million peso traffic signalization project of the local government of Davao has been put on hold in various intersections surrounding the area due to the snarling traffic.

Remembering Christmas and our environment
Published : 2007-11-26

We all love Christmas. It’s the season to celebrate. A season to exchange warm greetings. Most of all, it’s the season to remember the birth of Christ and the reason for His coming into this world. We do usually begin making or sending out Christmas cards in October or November. These greeting cards started out as simple slips of papyrus that were exchanged by both the Egyptians and Chinese as messages of goodwill.

As the concept of greeting cards evolved, Europeans began to send them to one another for holidays and this occurred as early as the 1400’s. Of course, these cards were handmade and expensive so not everyone could afford to send greeting cards for their holiday well-wishes. These greetings cards have evolved from an item used only by the rich to an everyday tradition. Whether you want to communicate with far-off relatives, or just let your love-ones know how much you love them – greeting cards make a great and inexpensive way to brighten up someone’s day!

With the emergence of the e-greeting card as an extension of the traditional postcard and greeting card, people nowadays would just simply forget the importance of these traditional Christmas greeting cards. So, why email Christmas cards that can be easily trashed when you can send printed Christmas cards that will be kept and treasured?

Through the People Collaborating for Environmental and Economic Management in Davao (PCEEM Davao) Foundation, Inc. you can send Environmental Christmas greeting cards and at the same time help protect our Davao Watersheds through the Tree Stewardship Program.

The Tree Stewardship Program aims to unify stakeholders’ efforts towards rehabilitating, protecting and managing environmentally critical areas in the watershed. When you purchase one set of Envi-Cards (3 per set) for P75.00 you will be able to maintain a tree for one year.

The cost already includes design and production of cards, social mobilization, maintenance, technical assistance, monitoring, documentation and reporting. The Environmental and Economic impact and benefits of this program will help prevent or minimize soil erosion, landslide and floods; improve air and water quality (fresh and salt water); increase water quantity; enhance health of the Watershed and its Biodiversity; provide income for people involved in tree planting and maintenance and educate the students on the importance of conserving and protecting our fragile ecosystem. These environment greeting cards are definitely so much better than Christmas electronic cards or even store-bought-paper Christmas cards because it is made from a recycled abaca fiber material.

PCEEM Davao would like to acknowledge last year’s Tree Stewardship Program Adopters through Environmental Cards: Davao City Planning and Development Office, Davao Association of Colleges and Schools, Inc., East-West Bank-Magsaysay Branch, Institute of Primary Health Care, Holy Cross College of Davao, St. Peter’s College of Toril, Catholic Relief Services, Davao Agricultural Ventures Corporation, House of Travel, Inc. and other Individual sponsors and adopters.

Being partners in watershed management, PCEEM Davao Foundation, Inc. established itself as an inclusive, impartial, collaborative, not-for-profit, non-government organization of multi-sector stakeholders that come from the eleven sectors; academe, business, farmer, fisher folks, government-owned and controlled corporations, indigenous peoples, non-government organizations, people’s organizations, plantation operators, women, and youth. All of these sectors are encouraged and supported to hold their assemblies so that their respective issues and concerns regarding the watersheds can be identified and eventually expressed in board meetings. This provision for a wide range of involvement in PCEEM Davao reflects its value for diversity, convergence, and participation.

A Tree is Worth Your Peso: For more information about the Tree Stewardship Program you may visit us at PCEEM Davao Foundation, Inc., at 2ND Floor, Rm 204, Lee Business Corner, Juan Luna cor. Juan dela Cruz Sts. Davao City. You may also contact us through (082) 2278768 or (082) 2278775 and look for Mr. Glenn S. Bais, Executive Director; or Mr. Erolle Linus T. Miranda, IEC Officer.

Filinvest Dev’t more than doubles profit to P3.91B
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Tuesday, November 27, 2007
Philippine Star

Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC), the investment holding firm of tycoon Andrew Gotianun, said its net earnings for the nine months ending September this year more than doubled to P3.91 billion from P1.76 billion in the same period last year, boosted by one-time gains from the sale of shares.

In a financial report filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, FDC said net revenues rose 23.07 percent to P4.96 billion from P4.03 billion.

Real estate operations contributed P3.4 billion in net revenues, up eight percent from P4.03 billion as a result of higher sales of lots, condominium and housing units and club shares. Mall and rental revenues reached P862 million or an increase of 16 percent from P744.7 million due to the escalation of rental rates in PBCOM Tower and improved tenant occupancy.

Financial and banking services, on the other hand, pumped in P1.3 billion in revenues, 47 percent higher than the year-ago level of P900 million, primarily coming from interest income with the increase in loans, particularly auto and credit card loans.

FDC said its sugar units, meanwhile, contributed a total of P250.5 million.

The company acquired from its parent company, ALG Holdings Corp. (ALGHC), 100 percent of Pacific Sugar Holdings Corp. (PSHC) in exchange for 1.55 billion shares of common stock.

PSHC wholly owns and controls three subsidiaries: Davao Sugar Central Co. Inc., Cotabato Sugar Central Co. Inc. and High Yield Sugar Farms Corp. (HYSFC) which have a combined milling capacity of 9,000 tons per day.

As of Sept. 30, 2007, FDC had total assets of P114 billion as against liabilities of P56 billion.

FDC is engaged in the property development and banking businesses through subsidiaries Filinvest Land Inc., Filinvest Alabang Inc. and East West Banking Corp.

It has set aside about P14 billion in capital expenditures for this year and next, bulk of which will come from its planned follow-on offering of shares next year.

The company is planning to issue to the public up to 3.5 billion common shares of which 2.5 billion are primary shares, while the rest are existing shares which will be sold by ALG Holdings Corp.

Of the expected proceeds from the additional share issuance, P6 billion will go to Filinvest Alabang, Inc., P3 billion for the expansion of the group’s sugar farming business and P2 billion for the expansion of East West Banking Corp.

Ayala eyeing Bacolod , Davao for BPO space

Key cities like Bacolod , Davao and Cagayan de Oro are being eyed by property developer Ayala Land Inc. as locations for more business process outsourcing space in Visayas and Mindanao , a government press release said.

Marivic Anonuevo, ALI senior vice president and head for corporate business group, said the company is now in talks with potential partners for BPO building projects in these cities.

"Information technology and BPO today is a growing billion-dollar industry worldwide. As one of the major real estate players in the country, we see this as a great opportunity for investment," she said.

Like its projects in Cebu, Anonuevo said ALI will enter into joint ventures to implement its projects in different cities in the Visayas and Mindanao .

ALI is going to provide infrastructure support for more BPO facilities in second-tiered cities as the company has already established its presence in major cities like Makati and Cebu , she said.

In Cebu, ALI recently unveiled its affiliates' latest project, the eBloc BPO building, which is now being constructed at the Cebu Asia Town IT Park, by Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp., the government press release said.

Ayala Land prefers to invest on BPO facilities
Cebu Daily News
Wednesday, November 21, 2007

Ayala Land Inc., (ALI) prefers to invest more on building facilities for the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Visayas and Mindanao areas rather than invest on more shopping malls.

In an interview with ALI senior vice president and head for corporate business group Marivic Añonuevo, she said that the company is now talking with potential partners for BPO building projects in Bacolod, Davao, and Cagayan de Oro (CDO).

According to Añonuevo, ALI is going to provide infrastructure facilities through building more BPO buildings in the second-tiered cities as ALI has already established its presence in major cities like Makati and Cebu.

Añonuevo was in Cebu recently to grace the unveiling of its affiliate's latest project, the eBloc BPO building, which is now being constructed at the Cebu Asia Town IT Park, by Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corporation (CPVDC).

Like in Cebu, ALI will work on joint ventures with its planned projects in different cities in the Visayas and Mindanao region.

She did not elaborate, however, when asked about ALI's expansion plans on shopping mall investments within the Southern Philippines, only said that the company's major activity right now is on building BPO buildings in the key cities in the Philippines.

"Information Technology and the BPO industry today is a growing billion-dollar industry worldwide. As one of the major real estate players in the country, we see this as a great opportunity for investment," she said.

By the end of this year to early of 2008, Añonuevo said ALI is expected to triple its leasable office spaces with a diversification both in geographies and product lines.

"Already, we are building two major projects, in Canlubang BPO Campus in Laguna province, and the UP North Science and Technology Park. Both are expected to be completed within the next two years. We are also finalizing plans for other locations in Makati, San Lazaro, Manila, Alabang and Davao," she added

Last week, CPVDC unveiled its P900 thousand, first medium rise building for BPO, called e-Bloc, situated in a 4,432 square meter area, in the phase 1 of Asia Town IT Park.

The 12-story mid-rise office condominium will offer a total of 21,000 square meters of office leaseable space and 1,5000 square-meter or retail leaseable space that will be made available for IT and IT-enabled firms, as well as retail outlets which will cater to this sector.

The building is expected to accommodate tenants by 2008.

On the other hand, CPVDC clarified that the company do not intend to develop the area which was the former location of BBRC (Bagong Buhay Rehabilitation Center), as the lot is owned by the Cebu Province.

However, CPVDC will invest to develop the remaining five-hectare property of the AsiaTown IT Park starting next year, which is located near the former BBRC complex.—Ehda M. Dagooc

Ayala Land to expand BPO space inventory
Inquirer
05/15/2007

Property developer Ayala Land Inc. will speed up its development of office spaces for business processing outsourcing (BPO) companies in the next three years, a company official said.

Its goal is to build 500,000 square meters of BPO spaces by 2010, compared with its current inventory of 52,000 square meters, mostly in the cities of Makati and Taguig and in Laguna province, said Marivic Añonuevo, head of Ayala Land’s corporate business group.

BPO-friendly developments are planned in Quezon City, Manila, Alabang, Cebu, and Davao, Añonuevo said.

The company is currently exploring options in other key cities in the country, she added.

Demand for Ayala Land office projects is coming mostly from the leading BPO players and other top multinational corporations that want to set up backroom operations in the Philippines, said Maria Carmela Ignacio, senior manager at the corporate business division.

The global BPO industry is expected to grow from a 2005 gross revenue level of $30 billion to $110 billion in 2010.

“Consolidated BPO workforce demand in the Philippines is expected to increase by an average of 50 percent annually in the next five years,” Ignacio said.

In Makati and in Santa Rosa City in Laguna, Ayala Land has partnered with BPO companies such as People Support, Convergys and InfoNXX

In Cebu, ALI recently unveiled its affiliates' latest project, the eBloc BPO building, which is now being constructed at the Cebu Asia Town IT Park, by Cebu Property Ventures and Development Corp., the government press release said.

^^ :okay: With this reports plus the other press releases, there is one factor in common - an AYALA will be built in DAVAO.

No vendors at new park, says Wendel
By Jose G. Dalumpines

VENDORS will be banned from within and around the former PTA grounds which the city government is developing into a primary park, City Administrator Wendell Avisado said.

Avisado said vendors are only allowed to enter the park as promenaders and they are not allowed to sell their goods.

“Vendors are definitely banned within and around the park,” he said.

The city government has been very lenient on the proliferation of vendors in the major streets for as long as they do not block the access of motorists and pedestrians.

Avisado announced the park would be opened to the public on December 6 in time for the launching of the “Paskohan sa Davao Festival.”

He said the shortlist of the five finalists whose entries to name the park is already in the hands of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte who will declare the winner and will be included in the city’s history.

Avisado expressed hope that by December 6 all amenities in the park can be viewed by the public.

“We expect them to be satisfied of all the things that they see in the park including the interactive fountains and waterfalls," he said.

Challenging time for City Chamber
By Jun Ledesma
Sunbursts

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry has been a recipient of various awards and recognition. Even when it cut its umbilical cord from the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry a year ago following some arbitrary changes in the rules to suit the agenda of a few influential doyens in the PCCII, the local Chamber remained focused on its programs and objectives.

President Domingo "Doming" Duerme who steered the Chamber during this year when the industrialists organization has to charter its own course, refused to be cowed by threats that PCCI will no longer extend the Davao Chamber the kind of assistance it used to receive.

DCCII, however, on the record, was never a recipient of any aid from the parent organization. On the other hand, it managed to directly and successfully linked up with other international Chambers and grant agencies which had been satisfied with the performance of the local Chamber.

The controversy over membership with PCCII has become a non-issue. This week, the Davao City Chamber will elect its new members of the board of trustees who will in turn elect the next chamber president. Duerme who is the Philippine Airlines vice president for Mindanao is not seeking reelection for president saying other leaders in the industry should be given the chance to preside over the Chamber.

The year ahead holds great challenges for whoever the next president of the Chamber will be. The recent Davao Trade Exposition which was chaired by entrepreneur Ferdinand "Ferdie" Mara¤on offers a glimpse of what could be the most exciting and eventful year for the Davao Chamber. Maranon succeeded in inviting foreign capitalists and traders who saw the potentials of Davao by way of direct investments and trade.

Maranon who's running for president of the Davao Chamber is the prime advocate for the establishment of an Export Zone Authority in Davao. Maranon knows whereof he speaks.

On record he is the only Davao City-based businessman who had a firm registered with an export zone in Laguna.

"Firms operating inside an export zone authority have a decided advantage. Importation of expensive equipment and machinery are tax exempt. No VAT to worry about. The BIR or customs authorities do not even bother you," Mara¤on explained in a capsule.

In the Davao Trade Expo (Date 2007), no less than 40 businessmen and traders came to touch base with local entrepreneurs. A group of 14 Taiwanese buyers, 16 US-based product exhibitors, dozens of delegates from Korea, Japan and Indonesia among others attended and linked up with their local counterparts.

I personally cannot agree more to what Maranon hopes to happen in Davao. Davao is an agri-based region with so much potential in its other industries.

He said the stable peace and order condition in Davao City under the leadership of Mayor Rody Duterte makes it an ideal site for an export zone authority.

Actually, I think that this can be private-sector led or the City Government can sponsor that under its bureau for enterprises. Now that Sara Duterte Carpio is vice mayor of the city and presiding over the Sanggunian, establishing an export zone will not be a problem. I am talking here of the dynamism of the youth that is in Inday Sara.

I share the enthusiasm of Maranon in his vision to establish an export zone authority. He is not saying it but last week I learned that his importation of modern blast-freezing facility has arrived in Sasa port.

The machinery costs P35-million. Because there is no EZA in Davao he has to shell out P3 million plus on taxes, an amount which could have been used for the operations of his firm.

I also found out from Maranon that practically any kind of fruits produced in Davao can be processed and exported. Using cruder equipment, Maranon actually made a trial shipment of frozen fruits to the Middle East.

Encouraged by the demand in that single market alone, Maranon fast tracked the acquisition of state-of-the art equipment. I visited their plant site the other day and there is no let-up in putting the facility together. Maranon estimated that by mid-January 2008 the facility will start operating.

Other than fresh fruits, I knew of Korean and Japanese investors who are into processing and exporting coconut coir and manufacturing quality tiles. The prospects are boundless. As far as Maranon is concerned, the key to revving up the development of industries in the region is to set up an export zone authority not only in Davao City but also in Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur.

Mabuhay ka Ferdie! I cannot help it if I sound like am campaigning for your presidential bid in the Chamber, but for what you have done, and hope to achieve, I think you well-deserve that presidency. Good luck!

Nograles bares P15 million projects
Sunstar Davao

AFTER challenging Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to make public his accomplishments, Representative Prospero Nograles announced he was able to obtain P15 million worth of projects for the city's 1st district.

Nograles said that for transparency purposes, his district office has consistently announced through press statements all his projects and that he submits a printed performance report at the end of every year summarizing all his projects in detail.

Post your comments here on the Batasan blast

Nograles said the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has issued a Special Allotment Release Order (Saro) worth P15 million for the following projects: PhilHealth Insurance worth P1.8 million, Scholarship at USEP worth P1 million, Tesda skills training worth P1 million, and DSWD Livelihood & Protective Force Services for P1.2 million.

In addition, Atty. Karlo Nograles, chief of staff of the congressman, said his father has also allocated P1 million for the completion of the barangay hall of Catalunan Grande where Paolo Duterte is the new barangay captain.

There is also a release of P1 million each for the barangay halls of Matina Pangi, 19-B, and P400,000 for Barangay 29-C and that the DPWH will immediately implement these projects.

The young Nograles said that water systems and pumping station and conduits will also be implemented in Magtuod, to cost P1.5 million, and Langub, which is worth P300,000.

Roads and multi-purpose pavements have also been released for Barangays Bucana 76-A, Talomo, 22-C, 11-B, Ma-a, Matina Aplaya, Dumoy, 19-B, Baliok, Matina Crossing, 31-D, and 21-C. Total amount released by DBM for the above-mentioned projects is P15 million.

The congressman said he will continue to put up public billboards as provided by law and DPWH regulations in all these projects to show the people that these projects are both “real and existing” and for all "blind eyes" to see.
"I do not mind being criticized for this. I still feel that those who do not put up billboards to show their projects for purposes of transparency probably have no projects to show in the first place," Nograles said.

"If congressmen in remote areas of the country do not lobby for DPWH projects, chances are most of the funds will be diverted and placed in Metro Manila, that's why we need to fight for meager resources of government to be released to our district," the congressman said.

Nograles also added he will soon follow up the release of another P20 million for projects before the end of this year.

"The District Office is now preparing our summary of all projects we have implemented in 2006 and 2007. We will provide adequate copies to media and the public as soon as we get them printed out," Nograles said.

Duterte earlier criticized Nograles for putting up billboards on projects that came from the national government and would be implemented with or without the congressman.

Duterte advised Nograles to instead spend the money for his billboards on more worthwhile projects that would help his constituents in the First District. (BOT)

Freestyle risks edgier changes in new album
By YUGEL LOSORATA
Manila Bulettin

Pop group sensation Freestyle adds another piece of accomplishment to its already loaded vault of achievements with the release of its latest album "Back at the Yard." This 16-track mostly originals package features the group showcasing its songwriting ability, with its newest members given the spotlight.

"Sound-wise we’re edgier than ever with our new members supplying help in the keyboard department," says guitarist Tat Suzara, pointing in particular male vocalists Mike Luis and Joshua Desiderio who both play the keys to augment the sound of main keyboardist Nicki Cabardo.

Both Mike and Joshua joined Freestyle sometime in 2005, along with bass player Rommel Dela Cruz. All three late acquisitions seem to have been provided with some treat by the old members as they dominate the songwriting chore for the group’s fifth studio album with originals.

A former "That’s Entertainment" member and the voice behind the 90s hit song "Iba Ka Na Pala Ngayon, Mike is responsible for eight of the 13 noncovers featured in the album. Rommel, for his part, contributed two while Joshua did one solo and another which he worked on with lady singer Jinky Vidal. Their collaboration piece is "Dati" which turned out as the album’s carrier single. It is now being played in some FM stations, with a music video set to be seen on the boobtube anytime soon.

"This album opens a different chapter of our career, a kind of fresh start," reflects drummer Gerald Banzon, his backyard studio at home having been used as recording venue, hence the album title "Back at the Yard."

One of the premier live acts among local band acts, Freestyle had last released an album back in June 2006 — a covers-filled live recording called "Freestyle Live @ 19 East." Thus, this new output is the first with original songs featuring the group’s new faces.

Apart from "Dati", another outstanding number is "Muling Ibalik," a nicely vocally blended ballad written by Mike and lead sung by Jinky, as well as "Rainbow Coloured Sky," a piece from Rommel deemed as the closest to the band’s big acoustic hit "So Slow." Jinky’s voice captures the same feel of that song with this one, especially with just a guitar accompaniment.

"Back at the Yard," released by Viva Records, opens with Mike’s composition "Tameme," reminiscent of his solo hit and somewhat a peculiar song as with the kind of musicality Freestyle fans have been accustomed to since. This is followed by the feel-good "Naglalambing" wherein Joshua goes to sound as a competent replacement for original vocalist Top Suzara.

The rest of the album’s originals are "Mapipigil Mo Ba?," "Paper Rain," "Wonder," "Bawat Tao," "Wrapped Around Your Finger," "Sugar," "Bakit Kaya?" and "Nananabik."

Three revivals complete the lineup: "I Will Still Love You" (penned by Robert Strauss), "Is It Over" (co-written by Charles Quillen and Mike Reid) and "Maybe" (a piece produced by a trio led by Burt Bacharach), which is arguably the best rendition among the CD’s covers.

Jinky, being the most popularly recognized Freestyle member, assessed, "We prefer not to be acknowledged based on who are on board, but rather because of the music the people hear from us."

Freestyle recently refreshed the press of the break which sealed their fate for fame. They said that some years back, they played front-act for Parliament Syndicate (a band they obviously surpassed in popularity) when someone with a position noticed them. In one of the next gigs they saw the Viva big boss already watching them — a big surprise that naturally doubled when they realized he brought along a record contract offer.

New airline flies Davao skies

A new airline will soon serve travelers to Kalibo, Cebu, Subic and Manila from Davao City. Pacific Pearl Airways will start its operations in December with two Advanced Boeing 737-200 aircrafts with around 112-114 seating capacity.

According to Richard Ryu, vice president of DavKor International Group Corp, initial flights will be to Kalibo and Subic but the plan to serve other destinations in the country is in the pipeline.

International destinations will include Brunei, Kota Kinabalu and Palau. They are still finalizing permits to fly to South Korea from Subic.

Pacific Pearl Airways’ objectives are: provide its customers with efficient service and value for money in airline transportation; offer its employees and associates with professional corporate environment, opportunities for career development and just compensation; enable its stockholders to achieve optimum investment returns; and contribute to the economic, social and cultural advancement of the Filipino Nation.

The company is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission with permits from the Philippines Civil Aeronautics Board (CAB) and Air Transportation Office.

Vice mayor admonishes councilors during session
By Rizalene P. Acac

Lawmakers yesterday got a tongue-lashing from an irked Vice Mayor Sara Duterte in yesterday’s city council session over the third deferment of a reclassification of property in Lubogan, Toril District.

Duterte gave legislators an ultimatum, either to grant or deny the application for reclassification of Maria Nenita Y. Burbe Aggregates and Supply, to decide on the proposal in the next session.

“Once is enough. Twice is too much. I will allow the motion (for deferment). I want you to make a stand whether you want to approve the committee report or not,” he said.

The councilors refused to approve it without the assurance that the stone crusher company has complied with the provisions of the memorandum of agreement signed with the officials of Barangay Lubogan.

The provisions included the transfer of the crusher machine towards the part of the lot away from the residential houses; establish a perimeter fence around the property of the Burbe; and the company’s donation of a lot for the barangay’s daycare center.

In the session last November 20, Cirila M. Valric, a petitioner against the company said the terms and conditions have not been met.

Valric also questioned the mistaken classification of the property which under the zoning ordinance is a medium density residential. The company wants to have it reclassified into an industrial zone to an agricultural zone.

Dominador Burbe, who also appeared yesterday’s session, refuted Valric’s statements, claiming that all the conditions under the agreement have already been fulfilled including the placement of boulders around the property to prevent soil erosion.

Burbe said the other petitioners who blocked the reclassfication also withdrew their protest.

Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, urban and rural settlements, said the seeming inconsistencies in the reclassification could be easily explained.

Cabling said the Comprehensive Zoning Ordinance classifies the area under a medium density residential zone while the City Assessor’s Office, for tax purposes, identifies it as a agricultural zone.

Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang and Cabling also disagreed how to insert the corrections in the committee report.

Dayanghirang said it will be more confusing to state the inconsistencies in the documents but the proponent said it would save the city council some worries in the future.

“I appeal that please disabuse your mind that we are trying to hide something here,” Cabling said.

Councilor Diosdado Mahipus suggested that the City Engineer’s Office, City Health Office and the city councilors visit the area to validate claims of both parties.

The application was calendared for first reading last August 07 and was also deferred for deliberation for several times.
