That new hotel being constructed - who are the owners? Bangayan? Huang (Villa Abrille)? Interesting development. Is it right behind G-Mall? Across from SPH? Details, please...

For what it's worth, my guess is that one of the Bangayans is investing in that hotel.

Golden Phoenix Seafood Garden

http://img120.imageshack.us/img120/8671/dsc00146tj4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

My sister and I were at SM Davao last Sunday to do some last minute shopping for gifts and groceries for noche buena.

Pancake House was my choice since we still had to buy groceries but my sister insisted that we try Golden Phoenix Seafood Garden. What a nice suggestion. I hope they cook fast since my Pasko(Christmas) was fast becoming Pasmo(ulcer).

Golden Phoenix used to be Krua Thai, the Thai restaurant at SM Davao. As you enter, you will immediately notice that the place is quite tacky but the volume of customers seated assured me that we were in the right place. Fingers crossed.

We were seated smack front of the cold cuts area which was a terrible spot if you're starved. This was torture. Save me!

We waited 45 or so minutes before our food was served. I was feeling patient that day or the headless chicken hypnotized me not to complain.

One of the waiters who noticed that I was growing thin by the minute approached us and assured us that the orders were coming soon. Everyone in the restaurant was so busy that day that you wanted to help out in the kitchen!

The hunger was too much to bear so we had to order dimsum just to ease the pain...yes pain. We had pork dumplings at 3 pieces per order(P67.00). One for Nong A, one for my sister, and one for DFH who was doing her own version of Vengeance is not ours it's God's which starts with "Alms, alms, alms. Spare me a piece of bread. Spare me your mercy. I am a child so young, so thin, and so ragged..."

As I bit into the pork dumpling, the orders arrived. Were they only waiting for us to order dumplings before they served our food?! Is ordering dumplings the magic word?!

First to be served was soup. My obsession with Hot and Sour Soup(P220) strikes again. Guys, you have got to watch me closely. If I order Hot and Sour for the next 3 months, you are entitled to shoot me dead or alive. If you're lucky to shoot me dead, hot and sour soup will be oozing out my body and not blood and I'll be giving those forensic guys a hard time.

The soup was okay. It was hot, sour, and thick. Just the way I like it.

The Golden Phoenix Fried Rice (P180)was just your regular Yang Chow made richer by topping it with thick sauce, shrimps, meat, and vegetables.

We had Litid with Beef Brisket in Pot (P180). For those of you who are not really fond of identifying an animal's anatomy before munching on it, litid means ligaments. And what is a ligament? A ligament is a fibrous tissue that connects bones to other bones. Class dismissed.

A ligament is really an interesting part to eat. Picture this, it's like eating the wire between two telephones. It really is interesting to chew on the wire.

The Sauteed Crystal Prawns in Garlic was delicious. It was seasoned to the minimum and the flavor of the prawns remains to be dominant.

Golden Phoenix Seafood Garden serves the usual Chinese fare - cold cuts, dimsum, steamed fish, etc.

Despite the long wait and tacky interiors, my first Golden Phoenix Seafood Garden experience was worth it!

Santa, I'm naughty but nice. Don't scratch me off your list.

Chinese firm wants to build Davao railway

DAVAO CITY — China National Railway Signal and Communication Group Corp. has looked into the possibility of building the proposed railway system that will connect most of the Davao Region.

Zhong Zhi Guo, president of the company, signed a memorandum of agreement with the Davao Integrated Development Program and the Mindanao Business Council for possibly setting up big infrastructure projects in the region.

Mr. Zhong said his company has built 180,000 kilometers of railway system in China and is considered among the best in the world in railway project development.

"We are very competent," he said through an interpreter.

A railway system is among the projects that the Davao local governments want to build in near to medium terms.

Another is a bridge that would connect Samal Island, a tourist destination, with Davao City.

Under a plan of the Davao Regional Development Council earlier proposed by a team of Japanese consultants, the railway system will traverse Digos City in Davao del Sur and Tagum City in Davao del Norte.

Earlier, Faisal Kasim of British firm MCCC Capital, Inc., expressed interest to look into the feasibility of building an even longer railway system, the Mindanao Railway System, which was first proposed by former President Ramos.

Last month, engineers from Mr. Kasim’s company visited the region and some key areas in Mindanao to initially evaluate the viability of the project.

Mr. Kasim proposed that local governments of areas covered by the project join his company in setting up the project.

He proposed a bond issuance, the proceeds of which would be used for project development.

Davao del Norte Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario, head of the regional program, said the memorandum of agreement would allow local governments to implement big ticket projects with the help of Mr. Kasim’s company.

He said the initiatives should come not from the funding company, but from local governments that need help in implementing the project.

Mr. Kasim said his company would tap Middle East investors who want to invest in Mindanao and the rest of the country. He said there were companies in the Middle East that have expressed their optimism in investing in Mindanao.

Several Middle Eastern countries are members of the Organization of Islamic Conference, a body that mediated the peace talks between the Moro National Liberation Front and the Philippine government. The result of their peace talks was an agreement signed on Sept. 2, 1996. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

Duterte ranks 3rd in terms of performance
By Ben O. Tesiorna

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte reportedly placed third among the top local chief executives in terms of performance all over the country.

Reports reaching Sun.Star Davao showed that the Pulse Asia survey was conducted on October 21 to 31 where respondents were asked for the top mayors in the country based on their awareness and performance.

Topping the list is Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim. Coming in second is Makati Mayor Jejomar Binay. Trailing Duterte in fourth place is Quezon City Mayor Sonny Belmonte.

It was learned that Lim was the one who sponsored the said survey.

Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles was quick to send his congratulations to Duterte for his good performance that was acknowledged not just by Dabawenyos but by the whole nation as well.

There's a kind of hush in Davao
By Jojie Alcantara
Witerary

RESIDENTS of Davao City may be so used to it by now, but guests and tourists find it a novel idea how we have been spending our Christmas holidays without the revelry and accustomed noise.

In fact, since the year 2000, we haven't heard of a single bang, pop and fizzle in the sky caused by an overeager resident (well, one or two brave souls tried and were instantly apprehended by authorities). We see parols everywhere on sidewalks, plastic torotots and sparklers, but none of the super lolos, Judas Belt, 5-star, bawang, kwitis, whistle bomb and watusi which we all have grown up with during childhood Christmases and New Years (probably accounting for a high percentage of ear problems we Pinoys have).

The first year of the firecracker ban was disappointingly somber. Davao City went through a quiet, contemplative celebration (translation: I snored in bed early). In my neighborhood, I was the lone noisemaker with sandok and kaldero in my hands.

I went out with my videocam to document a tricycle driving past in the street dragging around tin cans tied to ropes. A vehemently honking car whizzed by. A young boy held on to a dying sparkler, his face lighting up for a moment. The skies were festooned with colorful but noiseless fireworks.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was firm in his decision that no firecracker or pyrotechnics were to be sold, lit or exploded during Christmas, which went well for relieved parents, but not for grumbling traders.

In our hearts, there were mixed emotions on his stance. Grudging admiration, because no one has ever put a wet blanket on a tradition that naturally and closely precedes reckless perils and accidental mishaps. Yet no one violated his rule. No child with bloody fingers or blasted eye was rushed to the hospital the next day... a record for the city. Each year after that, we proudly kept our record of zero injurY from Christmas revelry.

Every year, it goes on. Of the islands in the Philippines, Davao represented the quiet kind of merriment that concentrated more on peace and safety rather than the outrageous, ear-shattering and boisterous welcoming of another year.

I once joined a festival in a beautiful coastal area in Surigao, and we were treated to a midnight display of fantastic fireworks that seemed to last forever. I gasped at the emblazoned sky in awe and actually shed tears.

Embarrassed, I tried to explain to the person beside me, "I am a Dabawenya," and it dawned on him in total understanding. During a December vacation in Boracay, I was always startled by the smallest "watusi" that popped.

Soon after, I stopped being apologetic. Living in Davao may have attuned our senses to the solemnity of the Christmas season, while the song "Silent Night, Holy Night, All is Calm, All is Bright..." runs in our heads. We can't say we will trade it back for those years of excitement and danger when people carelessly toyed with explosives and gambled missing fingers, wounded eyes, or worse, death from stray bullets. Hospitals back then were the busiest place in town.

If you're a stickler for Pinoy customs and you visit my city, you would be a little disappointed not to be lighting "super lolo' this year to raise the hackles of your neighbors. After all, what is a little noise to welcome the birth of a Savior? Habits are so hard to break.

But imagine what might have been when the child JC was born in the manger. There weren't fireworks or explosions to herald His birth, but one shiny, twinkling star. Instead, he was blanketed with a peaceful silence around him, save perhaps for the sloppy chewing of grass by the goats, and the bleats of pesky lambs.

Davao has its own way of observing Christmas and observing the passing of another year. We make up for the lack of noise by practically lighting the whole town up. With activities such as Pasko Fiesta sa Dabaw, each barangay is encouraged to decorate and be creative to win incentives from the government.

The city is gaily filled with lanterns and lights that brighten up every evening. Streets are emblazoned with colorful decors, twinkling lights, giant Christmas trees and Santa statues everywhere.

Despite the lack of ruckus, Dabawenyos and visitors hang out in downtown parks to breathe in the wonderful spirit of a peaceful, muted but equally joyful Christmas. As for me, my good old "torotot" still works wonders.

MoA on LRT, Samal bridge projects signed (http://www.mb.com.ph/PROV20071228112841.html)

Signing formalizes beginning of projects, DTI official says

By SARAH JANE HILOMEN

DAVAO CITY – The Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), MCC Capital Inc., a UK-based financial institution, and local government units in the Davao Region have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the proposed Davao Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the construction of a bridge in Samal.

Merly Cruz, assistant secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), reported that the projects were the results of the BIMP-EAGA investment conference held in this city last October.

"After follow through meetings and creation of a task force by the economic development committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC), we needed partners to provide us the resources. And so, this MoA signing formalizes the beginning of these projects," she said.

Furthermore, Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario, chair of DIDP, said that the provisions of the MoA, which is an overall agreement to initiate projects, include funding by MCC Capital.

In a report prepared by Wendel Avisado, executive director of the DIDP, it was stated that "the LRT system will serve the coastal builtup area of Davao City, as well as neighboring areas in Davao del Sur (Sta. Cruz), and Davao del Norte (Panabo City)."

He said that the project cost was R240 billion in 1997 when it was first proposed. "It is also proposed to be 60 kilometers in length and a BOT (build, operate, transfer) project," Avisado said.

In a statement, Nicasio Angelo J. Agustin, vice chairman of the Davao regional office of the Regional Development Council (RDC 11), said that "the railway system will be initially established traversing the Tagum City-Carmen-Panabo City-Davao City-Sta. Cruz-Digos City highway. These areas comprise the "linear urban corridor" that serves as the hub of economic activities and social integration in the Davao Region. The cities in the ‘linear urban corridor’ are also among the major ‘growth centers,’ intended to strengthen and enhance existing economic zones and market exchange centers," he said.

Meanwhile, it was reported the Samal bridge costs R6.48 billion. It is proposed to be 1,200 meters in length with two lanes and to have a vertical clearance of 22 meters.

Agustin said that the Samal bridge is "critical to spur development in the Island Garden City of Samal, and will serve as the link to the other growth centers in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental through the proposed roll-on/roll-off port facilities."

On the proposed Davao Railway System, the China Railway Signalling and Communications Corp. (CRSC) has been tapped to construct the system.

It is an AAA credit grade enterprise specializing in railway construction, which corners over 70 percent of the market in nationwide railway system in China with over 50 years of railway construction system. The president of CRSC expressed confidence on the said projects.

"We will do our best to support the project and hope that the meeting can approve friendship between China and the Philippines," he said.

MCC Capital Inc., through Mohammad Faisal Kasim, CEO, and John Tapp, director and company secretary, is optimistic about the projects. "We believe that MCC Capital can undertake the projects successfully because of the positive factors of growth in the Philippines when it comes to investments and business," Kasim said. Nevertheless, Kasim added that less bureaucracy is important in doing good business here.

Vicente Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), is also enthusiastic about the development in the projects.

When will these people ever leave Davao alone??? LOL! The projects just keep pouring in! Hmmm... Maybe not the best projects (?) as some might argue, but they definitely keep pouring in anyway! LOL! But come to think of it, if these projects are not the best, what is?

Hold your horses people. The year 2008 is like a double-edged sword. For Davao crusaders, 2008 is a sweet victory. For Davao antagonists, the year 2008 is a bitter setback. LOL!

Francisco

Vicente Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), is also enthusiastic about the development in the projects.
uhm... I want the brits to build the LRT in this case IMO... but I want a bullet-like speed train..

World's No. 1 contractor to finance railway, bridge projects
Sunstar Davao

THE MCC Capital Projects Limited, a business concern engaged in financing and construction and identified to be the number one railway contractor in the world based in the United Kingdom, Wednesday expressed interest to help in the development of Mindanao and affirmed its preparedness to obtain adequate and timely financing for developmental projects in the island.

Faisal Kasim, chief executive officer of the MCC Capital, and John Tapp, managing director and secretary of the same company, have inked partnership with a local government unit (LGU)-led initiative, the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), and with the Mindanao Business Council (MinBc) on Thursday at the regional office of the Department of

Part of the Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing was the implementation of the Mindanao Railway System and the Samal Bridge Project, which are identified in the DIDP Master Plan since 1994.

The railway system will be initially established traversing the major highway of Tagum City - Carmen - Panabo City - Davao City - Sta.Cruz, and Digos City. Based on the DIDP Master Plan estimation as of 1997, the railway costs P240 billion.

The Samal Bridge Project, on the other hand, will serve as link to the other growth centers in Compostela Valley province and Davao Oriental through the proposed roll-on/roll-off port facilities. Again, as of 1997, DIDP estimated a total of P6.48 billion for the project.

"We are very optimistic in investing in this part of Mindanao, people here speak English and are highly literate," Kasim said in a press conference.

Under the Memorandum of Agreement, the DIDP, represented by Board Chair Governor Rodolfo del Rosario, the MinBC, represented by MinBC and Regional Development Council (RDC) Chair Vicente Lao, Kasim and Tapp, of the MCC Capital, have confirmed understanding that they shall collectively endeavor to arrive at a mutually accepted agreement to undertake infrastructure projects that would benefit Mindanao and help in the growth of the Bimp-Eaga region.

Governor del Rosario said the MCC Capital will conduct studies, provide expert assistance, and submit proposals for the development and realization of the Mindanao Rail and Samal Bridge Projects.

The DIDP, MinBC, and the MCC Capital will then consult and coordinate with each other during the first quarter of 2008 and action plan for the undertaking of priority infrastructure projects.

Meanwhile, Vicente Lao, said that MinBC, as a duly constituted Philippine entity, will never stop from looking innovative ideas on how to come up with the realization of projects planned for Mindanao.

"We were very glad that we were able to adopt a policy now and that is to look for ways and means on how to make developments in Mindanao without depending from Manila, we hope that the initiation of this activity will open up doors for other funding institutions to invest in Mindanao," Lao said.

Lao said that with the entry of the MCC Capital as partner of the DIDP and MinBC, a lot of possibilities are open now for the Davao Region and Mindanao. (JGRS)

i think the Brits is engaged also in construction .

Ei dont starve yourself. Remember the first time we met during the Kadayawan? I was more than 140lbs during those days. Now I'm down to 128lbs and Im keeping it this way. I have to admit though that I did a crash diet. But I do not advise such. It's a pain in the ***! :ohno: I did not eat solid food for 7 days and when I was hungry, I only drank lemon juice with maple syrup and cayenne pepper. It tasted so yucky! So dont try it.

If i were you, try doing the following:

- instead of doing a crash diet, eat six to eight times a day (tiny meals). Dont get rid of carbs but just minimize it. I also replaced rice with other carbs such as pasta and the like.

- Do 30 mins of cardio before and after your work out session.

- I tried Hydroxycut, but I dont recommend it. If you wish to use supplements, you may try Thermogreen Tea or Judy Ann's Fitrum :okay:

- Drink alot of water!

- AND GALAW! GALAW! GALAW! GALAW! GALAW! GALAW! GALAW!

^^ I did this and from 140lbs plus now Im down to 128lbs.... weeeeeee. next stop...I wish to gain muscles!

All I wanted was for him to prepare a program for me, and perhaps teach me the correct execution of the apparatus the first time I use it. That's it lang yung gusto ko... PERO WALA!!! Davao developers now required to allocate for urban poor

By Judy Quiros
Inquirer
First Posted 03:47pm (Mla time) 12/04/2007

DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Housing developers in this city are now required to set aside 20 percent of their project costs for the urban poor.

Based on the recently approved Comprehensive Urban Shelter and Services Development Code of Davao City, or the New Shelter Code, developers will not be given permits for new projects unless they comply with the new requirement.

Councilor Arnulfo Cabling, chairman of the committee on urban housing and rural development, said the 20 percent required of developers could be in the form of cash, infrastructure, or land.

He said even if the new shelter code, which was approved on November 12, has yet to take effect, several developers have already decided to set aside the required 20 percent.

He said Alsons Development and Investment Corp., one of the 20 applicants for new projects in the city, had donated 20 hectares in Lanang area in Buhangin district.

Cabling said another developer, Robinsons Development Corp. -- which is developing the posh Montclair Highlands subdivision, also in Buhangin district -- donated 15 hectares.

"The donations represented the companies' 20-percent share for urban housing," Cabling said.

Cabling said the city government will shoulder the development of the donated areas into urban poor housing projects.

Mindanao Land Foundation head Dam Vertido said the new housing policy will help address the growing problem of urban poor housing in the city.

He said 10 years ago, the backlog was already estimated at 40,000 units.

Pero, sa beginning sa akong program, nag cge lang sad ko og treadmill and other cardio exercises. Kay ang akong program first was losing weight followed by toning. Now, nasa toning na ako. Try doing an interval training para mas paspas ang pagburn sa fats. ako kay first five minutes, mo dagan ko with a speed of 10.5 then hinay hinay switch to 5. After 5 mins na sad kay 10.5 na pud till u reach ur 30 minute cardio. niwork baya for me.

Hold your horses people. The year 2008 is like a double-edged sword. For Davao crusaders, 2008 is a sweet victory. For Davao antagonists, the year 2008 is a bitter setback. LOL!
projects in davao are all inside the city that will definitely change the landscape, skyline and raise more the level of urbanity.

im just gonna pretend i count in tj's description. plus, i dont need to be popular to be recognized as an artist, right? or...that was just my opinion :D
anyway, this is the first painting i did in my painting class. it was hard because our prof didnt provide us with background. we just had to use our imagination instead. it took me 2 classes (2.5 hours each class) to finish this and when i tried to finish my painting, i couldnt find the apple i used as a model. according to my prof, she put it inside the fridge but somebody ate it. so yeah that was different. anyway, about the background, i have no idea what i want so i started playing with it and it was really annoying because i kept changing it. in the end, i said "screw this" so there you go.
btw, this is a monochromatic painting.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v402/nexgennikki/apol.jpg

this time, my prof said we have to bring our own models to class. i have no clue what to bring so i decided to bring my stuff toy :D meet buchukoy! buchukoy is a guy but i made him look pretty in my painting. i still need to finish this because i messed up his nose :(
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v402/nexgennikki/buchoy.jpg

uhm, i saw a picture on flickr and i was like "woah! that is really nice" so i decided to paint it. also, it was a time when our prof wanted us to paint something we really like. agian, this is one of those paintings i didnt finish because i ran out of time. :D you can see at the bottom, i kind of doddled on it

City to hire more park attendants
By Carlo P. Mallo

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will be hiring more park attendants to ensure safety and order inside Davao City's newest landmark, the People's Park.

Post your comments here on the Makati siege

Duterte, however, neither denied nor confirmed the report that an additional P2.4 million will be added to the annual budget of the park solely for its attendants.

"I do not know yet as I have yet to see the proposal," Duterte said in a recent interview.

The park attendants, according to Duterte, would primarily ensure that no violations of the park rules would be violated. They will also attend to the elderly and disabled who would be visiting the park.

The attendants would make it easier for the elderly and the disabled to roam around the park.

People flock to the park, especially at night to enjoy the sculptures and lights around the area. Another attraction of the park is the landscape of wild trees and plants.

The park remains as a no smoking area, and alcoholic beverages are highly prohibited.

"The plantilla personnel will each get P3,000 while the contractual will get P1,000 each," Duterte said.

The city has already given P5,000 for plantilla personnel and P2,000 for contractual as Christmas bonus.

The announcement of the additional cash gift was made after the mayor was informed by some members of the media that he ranked third among the mayors all over the Philippines in a survey done by Pulse Asia on awareness and performance.

Among the top four chosen, Duterte was the sole mayor from outside the general Manila area. Topping the list was Mayor Alfredo Lim of Manila, tied at second are Mayor Jejomar Binay of Makati City and Mayor Feliciano Belmonte of Quezon City.

Duterte, in his typical fashion, just smiled at the news and assured the employees that the bonuses will reach them before New Year's Day.

"Sige kay number three man kaha ko, manghatag ta ug New Year Bonus (Okay, since I am on the top three, I will give you your New Year's Bonus)," he said.
