Group confirms Davao tops most competitive cities
By Antonio M. Ajero

DAVAO is the only city in the Visayas and Mindanao that is included in the five "most competitive metro cities" in the Philippines. The city performed well in six out of seven major drivers of competitiveness.

Professor Mario Lopez of the AIM (Asia Institute of Management) Policy Center made this disclosure in making public for the first time in Davao City last Tuesday details of the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Rating Project (PCCRP) of 2005.

The PCCRP survey is being conducted yearly by AIM Policy Center in cooperation with the United States Agency for International Development, the Asia Foundation and the German Technical Cooperation.

The survey is designed to help gauge the competitiveness of cities in the country as a place for living and doing business.

A city's competitiveness, as defined by the World Competitiveness Yearbook, is the "ability of a city to create and maintain an environment that sustains more value creation for its enterprises and more prosperity for its people."

In the 2005 PCCRP, the country's 65 participating cities were categorized into three: metro, mid-sized, and small.

Competing under "metro" were 13 cities: Davao in Mindanao; Cebu, Lapu-lapu and Mandaue in the Visayas; and Las Piñas, Makati, Manila, Mandaluyong, Marikina, Muntinlupa, Pasig, Pasay and Quezon City in Luzon.

Under "mid-sized" were 15 cities: Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos, Iligan and Zamboanga in Mindanao, Bacolod and Iloilo in the Visayas, and Angeles, Baguio, Batangas, Cabanatuan, Calamba, Lipa, San Fernando (Pampanga) and Tarlac in Luzon.

Participating as "small" cities, 37 in all, were 16 from Mindanao (Bislig, Cotabato, Dapitan, Digos, Dipolog, Gingoog, Koronadal, Marawi, Oroquieta, Ozamis, Pagadian, Panabo, Surigao, Tacurong, Tagum and Valencia); 12 in Luzon (Cavite, Dagupan, Legaspi, Lucena, Naga, Olongapo, Puerto Princesa, San Fernando (La Union), Sta. Rosa, Sorsogon, Tagaytay and Tuguegarao); and nine in the Visayas (Bago, Cadiz, Dumaguete, Ormoc, Roxas, San Carlos, Silay, Tacloban and Tagbilaran).

The mid-sized cities were non-metro cities that have population greater than 200,000 inhabitants, while the small cities were those with populations of less than 200,000.

Where Davao excelled

Davao, Mindanao's only entry in the metro cities category, did well in the following drivers of competitiveness: cost of doing business (it ranked No. 1), dynamism of local economy (No. 2), linkages and accessibility (No. 2), infrastructure (No. 3), quality of life (No. 4) and responsiveness to business needs (No. 6), but did poorly in human resources and training with a ranking of only No. 11.

Unlike the studies in the previous years, PCCRP in 2005 did not reveal the overall ranking of the five most competitiveness cities.

Lopez, however, admitted that if he had his way he would reveal the rankings.

"Being a management person, I found that a little strange because most managers would want to see the ranks," he said.

He added, "I know people want bragging rights."

A computation of the cities' rankings in each of the drivers of competitiveness indicates that Davao ranks first among the five most competitive metro cities with a sum of 29.

But it tied with Makati, followed by Las Piñas with 36, Marikina with 38, and Muntinlupa with 43.

Marikina ranked No. 1 in three of the seven major drivers (infrastructure, responsiveness to business needs and quality of life), but its poor ratings in the remaining four drivers pulled it down.

tinuod na? o joke joke lang? aw, anyways, survey ra man na.

good morning davao!

Davao is the most competitive Metro City in the Philippines
May 1, 2006
Inq7.net

DAVAO CITY -- This city was adjudged anew the most competitive among the country's largest cities based on the 2005 Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project (PCCRP) conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center.

It was the second time the city drew the highest ranking in the PCCRP study, the first time being in 2002.

Also rated as competitive cities in the recent AIM study were Makati, Las Piñas, Marikina and Muntinlupa.

AIM professor Mario Lopez presented the study during last week's Mindanao Coalition for Transparent Governance (MCTAG) forum held at the Apo View Hotel here.

Lopez said the AIM study measured seven major "drivers" with corresponding indicators such as the cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, linkages and accessibility, human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness of the city to business needs, and quality of life.

He said Davao City ranked first in the cost of doing business, second
in both dynamism of local economy and linkages and accessibility. It was 3rd in infrastructure, 4th in quality of life, 6th in responsiveness to business needs, and 11th in human resources and training.

Lopez said the 2005 PCCRP study rated 65 cities in three categories -- metropolitan, midsize and small.

He said the city's poor performance in human resources and training might have been the result of the low ratio of its schools to the appropriateness of the courses offered.

Roberto Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment Promotion Center, said the 2005 rating meant the city was headed in the right direction.

"With an average economy of P100 billion and an improving economic performance, the city will surely continue to be on top of other Philippine cities in terms of competitiveness," he said.

Lopez said the study showed that the most competitive mid-sized cities were Bacolod, Batangas, Iligan, Iloilo and San Fernando in Pampanga province, and the most competitive small cities were Dagupan; Legazpi; Koronadal; Naga; Olongapo; San Fernando in La Union province; Sta. Rosa; Surigao; Tagbilaran and Tagum.

:)

Some can't believe it? Well, they just have to live with it! And that's the fact! Not a forecast, nor a projection....it's Davao's Reality!

This is a great addition to the already existing ICT incubator in Brokenshire. I hope plans for the ICT Park and PEZA zones will push through. We really need those to attract more investors.

There were news that Pryce Business Park tried to get a PEZA accreditation to become an ICT Park years back however failed to do so. Although this business park is not an official IT Zone, a number of ICT companies (International and SMEs) chose the business park as their home.

Philippines Promotes Davao City As Top Tourist Destination
April 2006
AsiaPulse

DAVAO CITY, April 10 Asia Pulse - The Department of Tourism (DoT) has strengthened the promotion of the city as one of the top destinations in the country this year.

Susan del Mundo, Philippine Convention and Visitors Corporation (PCVC) head, said there is already an order from Tourism Secretary Ace Durano to include Davao City as a major focus in the Philippine tourism promotion.

Del Mundo said as a starting point, Durano has ordered the country's foreign attache to include the city in the invitation of program for foreign visitors.

She said this means Davao City will be one of the places that tourists would go once they come to the country. The invitations would be sent to foreign media, tour operators and tourists particularly in Japan, South Korea and China.

Davao City is considered as one of the premiere destinations in the country along with Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Palawan.

Also, Del Mundo said the city is among the places chosen for DOTs Global Classroom for Peace program, which aims to invite over 100 teachers from the United States of America to come over to the country and interact with local teachers and students.

She said they are particularly targeting public schools and schools where indigenous peoples attend. The foreign teachers could also teach in the chosen schools.

The DoT is targeting to invite every month 10 teachers who would stay for nine days.

"The more interesting part about it is the documentation of the American educators visit which would be shown in the top-rated show of Oprah Winfrey in September," Del Mundo said.

In April 9-10 this year, an advance team will come to conduct an inspection and then the crew will follow for the documentation, Del Mundo added.

Del Mundo, along with other local business leaders, organized the recently concluded 1st Tourism Jobs Fair at NCCC Mall here.

From what I remember from what i heard from friends in USEP... it was originally USP (University of Southern Philippines), but since a different university already existed with that name (in Cebu), they changed to University of South Eastern Philippines (USEP). :)

I'm not sure about the story... maybe someone can verify the claim. :)

Newsmagazine features mayor, 5 other RP top leaders

NEWSBREAK, a hard-hitting weekly national newsmagazine making a name for its investigative reports, featured Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and five other outstanding local officials of the Philippines in its April 24 edition.

The pictures of Duterte and the five other local executives -- Governor Josefina dela Cruz of Bulacan, Mayor Jessie Robredo of Naga City, Mayor Feliciano Belmonte of Quezon City, Mayor Mary Jane Ortega of San Fernando City (La Union), and Mayor Francis Tolentino of Tagaytay City -- were on the magazine's cover.

Each had a story spread in the magazine's pages.

The story on Duterte, which was entitled "Don't Mess With Him," was written by Jowell Canuday of Mindanews.

The cover stories tell of how the six local executives succeeded in running their communities.

The newsmagazine asked the six government officials what they would do if they were president of the Philippines.

Duterte in response to the question was quoted as saying "he would have leftists, rightists, gays, women's rights advocates, traders -- a cross-section of society -- in his government. (AMA)

TMC to enforce law on motorcycle riders
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2006-04-28

THE Traffic Management Group (TMC) is set to implement next month the ordinance that will rid the city of habal-habals and possibly lessen road accidents.

In the wekly I-Speak Forum, Celso Gempesaw, TMC chief, said personnel from their office would start apprehending violators on May 2, 2006.

He said this is based on City Ordinance No. 0189-06 which requires motorcycle drivers plying in the city streets and national highways within the territorial jurisdiction of Davao City to wear crash helmets, limiting the number of back riders or riders to only one person and strictly prohibiting the use of the motorcycle as public transport units or conveyances.

Gempesaw said this ordinance is a more specific law imposed on motorcycle riders.

In 1978, the city council passed City Ordinance No. 737 which required all motorcycle riders to wear helmets.

In the new ordinance, however, the prohibited acts are spelled out specifically.

He said aside from requiring the motorcycle drivers to wear crash helmets and other protective gears, it also requires back riders to do the same.

“Kita lang diri sa Davao ang nag-tolerate nga more than one ang sakay nga pasahero sa motor. Sa Manila, dakpon na nang ingon ana,” he said.

The law also cites that motorcycles should not be used as a public transport. He said motorcycle drivers seen collecting fees from their passengers would be arrested.

The ordinance also prohibits minors with ages eight years old and below to ride the said motor transportation.

Gempesaw said offenders will be fined and their units will be impounded until such time that they could settle their accounts.

The penalty for first offenders is P 1,000; second offenders will pay P 2,000 and third offenders will pay P 3,000.

The fees should be paid to the city treasurer’s office, which will issue a receipt for the payment. The receipt could then be presented to the TMC for the unit to be released.

Gempesaw said other enforcers would include the police and the personnel from the Land Transportation Office. However, the motorcycle units of the violators will have to be turned over to TMC.

“Kung naay nadakpan didto sa Calinan sa police ila nang I-turn over sa amo sa TMC aron nga dili malibog ang tao kung asa nila kuhaon ang ilang motorsiklo,” he said.

Gempesaw said the primary aim of the ordinance is to protect the passengers of motorcycles who are not even covered by insurance companies.

Road mishaps

Throughout the country, 38 percent of vehicular accidents are from motorcycles. There is however, no data on the motorcycle accidents in the city.

Gempesaw suggested to the drivers of habal-habals to convert their motorcycles to tricycles because tricycles are recognized by law as a legal mode of transportation.

“They (drivers) should put a cab so that they can convert their motorcycles to tricycles, ask for a franchise, and go to areas where tricycles are scarce. There, they can continue with what they are doing,” Gempesaw said.

Gempesaw also asked the public to stop patronizing the habal-habal industry.

“If people will stop patronizing, the industry will die down. Drivers of habal-habals will stop because the industry will not be as lucrative anymore,” Gempesaw said.

Atty. Osmondo Villanueva, Acting Assistant City Legal Officer, also criticized the habal-habal industry in the city.

“Habal-habals are unfair to tricycle, jeepney, and taxi drivers. Habal-habals are illegal. Sila lang ang nabuhi, pero gipatay jud nila ang mga nanginabuhi’g legal, ang mga tricycle, jeepney, og taxi drivers. It is unfair. Plus, habal-habals are never a safe mode of transportation,” Villanueva lamented.

At present, there are about 12,000 to 14,000 habal-habal operator in the city, Gempesaw added. (with reports from Jan-Vincent B. Laroya)

After the ASEAN tourism forum, Davao is about to embark on projects that would make Davao soar like an eagle. Next year will never be the same at Riverfront Corporate City. From a reliable frontliner, under negotiations are:

1. Suria KLCC Mall, Malaysia
2. Amari Watergate Hotel (300++ rooms highrise about 30 storeys), Thailand
3. Grand Plaza Parkroyal Hotel (400++ rooms highrise about 40 storeys), Malaysia
4. An Australian Highrise Hotel in Matina

pwede bang magconstruct ng high rises dyan? along the flight path kasi ang riverfront eh. ang alam ko basta along the flight path hindi pwede construct ng mataas na buildings. ano kaya?

where in matina kaya ang australian hotel na yan? will it be at the karasia compound? i heard that the owners sold that 1 hectare lot. that is why kar asia is closing down its matina dealership. dun kaya yung hotel na yan?

Welcome and thanks for the information, Datu Bago. Let's all hope and pray these negotiations are successful. To state the obvious, these are multimillion-dollar investments. A lot in stake here for everyone - for the investors, the landowners, the developers and the countless other nameless Dabawenyos and Mindanaoans who will benefit directly and indirectly from these projects.

Really, I doubt the Dizons and Filinvest will allow Riverfront to become a "white elephant".

When Malaysian invests in other countries it must be huge. Unfortunately due to the Asian financial crisis in the late 90s, the $300 million investment of a Malaysian based company, Ekran Berhad Holdings, Ekran Berhad Casino Hotel in the Philippines closed down operations in July 2000. It boasts of 400 hotel rooms, a ballroom almost half of the size of a football field, 200 cabanas, restaurant, etc. So far, in the hope of reviving the hotel, Ekran Berhad Holdings has talked to two Korean groups, one from the United States and three local companies but no plans have been finalized as yet. In other developments, a popular KL mall and a hotel are about to ink an agreement for a possible investment in Davao City, Philippines. Spearheading the negotiations are officials of Sta. Lucia Realty, a real estate developer in the Philippines, who are here looking for a company like Ekran Berhad Holdings, to pour some investments in this progressive city southern part of the Philippine Islands. - Source Business Times

Let's hope no more financial crisis will affect this one, and please no more abusayyaf and MILF uprising.

My friend told me that Riverfront's first priority is a mall. Obvious reason is to attract business in the area. A philippine mall is also under negotiation but Riverfront wanted KLCC more for an international impact. He stated, para hindi makuryente, no news should escalate, not until groundbraking. One thing is sure, the management doesn't want speculators in the area. The negotiations are done, it's feasibility study time now for the would be investors. Let's give them a few months or a year for that. Good for those who already purchased a lot there, if all are in place next year, mag uunahan na ang mga locators dyan.

I haven't been to Crocodile Park yet.. hehe sorry kaau. I've only seen it through pictures from a friend of mine. I know there is a lot of land in the maa area (which i'm not really familar with too.. I only get to see it when taxi passes there to go to bajada.. :( ), but I'm not really familar with the project. Thanks for the clarification. When was the Riverfront Corporate City established?

I just thought it was reclaimed because of the surrounding waters. :)

Hi TJ, It's supposed to be an authentic Chinese arch kaya mahal. The proponents are still trying to source the funds from the private sector. I should call my brother-in-law's kuya and find out how they are progressing.

I think the cheapest arch is worth P800,000!!! From what I heard the government is asking for the help of Chinese families to finance the arches.

nakatungtong na pud ko diha sa peak twice over unya nakaingon gyud ko nga even if i had to do it 60 million times (a la mcdo commercial) i would kay grabe ka euphoric ang feeling once on top.

in my first trek, we took the magpet trail and sthe econd time was the kapatagan trail nga very awesome ang view ( the local's magnanimous vegetable plantations) but rather more tortuous. I prefer the latter for the combination of hard work and the rewarding picturesque landscape. A lot of stops to savor nature's bounty here.

Our beloved Davao is teeming with tremendous fun and excitement this summer. Take a plunge Davawenyos!

Davao Gulf council lines up Ocean Month activities

IN LINE with the celebration of the Ocean Month this May, Davao Gulf Management Council chair Leo Avila said they will hold various competitions as they line up activities during the month to bring to the attention of the public the neglected bodies of water.

"You put in some activities and the people will be alert that all of us have responsibility to help clean our coastal areas in Davao Gulf," Avila said during Wednesday's Ugnayan sa Mandaya forum.

Among the activities is the Aqua Urban Adventure Race on May 20, which Avila said will be patterned like the TV show Amazing Race.

Another activity is "Bigyu, Bangka Layag" on May 25 that will start at Lasang and end at Sasa Wharf area.

Avila said they are expecting 200 participants from different barangays in the city.

"We already talked with the barangay officials because we want the participation of all fisherfolks in all barangays," Avila said.

Another activity is the Hook and Line Fishing Competition scheduled on May 27 and Jetski Fun Race on May 28.

Avila said City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has given P50,000 for the first prize winner in the fishing competition.

City Tourism Officer Id Acaylar said the Ocean Month could be developed as a festival though there is still a need for a sponsor to fund all the activities.

"Establish first the event before getting sponsorship," added Acaylar. (BRQ

Here's More...

Kayakfest set May 27

THE Ocean Month 2006 Kayak Competition will get underway on May 27 at the Tuna To Go Resort and Restaurant along Times Beach.

The competition, according to Paulo Dino Ouano, will have the all-men tandem, all-women tandem and mixed tandem categories.

The champions in all categories will receive P3,000 each while the runners-up will get P2,000 and third placers will settle for P1,000 each.

The one-day event is organized as part of the Ocean Month celebration, which has the theme: "Promoting Sustainable Coastal Tourism as one Strategy to Conserve Coastal Environment."

Ouano said, "This is a free registration event but we will only limit 20 slots for every category."

He said registration forms must be submitted to Iyong Pepino at the Office of Councilor Leo Avila, Room 12, 2nd floor of the City Council Building. The Davao City Canoeing Association, Inc. (DCCAI) is sanctioning the competition. (MLSA)

@Lena: nice to be back too..hehe. yup, been busy these past days (w/ my kids :) )

so nice to see more constructions (bisag ginagmay lang). and i saw another U/C gasoline station along Bajada, fronting LBP (duol).

I saw nice developments also, not just in the city proper but also somewhere outside like Panacan and even Lasang. Even Panabo is no longer part of Davao, proud gihapon ko nagsud-ong sa iyang developments oy. Maryknoll High school has nice building na rin. Lami pud ang akong travel yesterday, nindot ang ilang road. More when we got to Tagum, sayang lang, wasn't able to roam around the nice Tagum City :sleepy: . I will feature JACK'S RIDGE in shrine hills, matina, davao city...
this world class place is so underrated, non-davao residents often think this is just a regular ridge... there are three known restos offering great view of davao city, JACK'S RIDGE, HILLTOP and KUTIPS. but jack's ridge is definitely awesome.

here it is... just 2 minutes away from NCCC mall, unbelievable?

entrance, viewing deck and open restos for all occasions...

inside Taklobo, tables are strategically arranged for a nice view of davao city...

For me, Davao is the best place to live in the Philippines.

I miss Davao a lot. It has become a Metropolis since I left. My parents went home a couple of years ago. Daghan na daw tao ang Dabaw. Di pareho sa una. We used to have a store in JP Laurel Ave. They said the store was still there. and the bakery around the corner was still there too! Now I see all the Davao pics!!! Makes one homesick...

Hey Guys and Gina,

Thank you for the pictures that really transported me back home.

Junax: What did you mean by non-Dabawenyos considering Jack's Ridge as just an ordinary ridge. Do they form this opinion after visiting the place? From what I've been reading in blogs of different people who've visited Davao, they often mention that Jack's Ridge was great.

Gina: That building they are erecting along Tomas Claudio (Quirino), is that were an old Shell Station used to be? When I was there 3 years ago, there was a used car lot operating in that lot. I think that property is owned by one of the Dacudao scions.

Don: The islands of Davao Gulf are really paradise. I remember when we used to go to Talikud even before people discovered it. Babusanta - that's the place we used to go to play. :)

That's pretty crazy. In 24 hour sunlight, I can finish building my deck in no time. I would have no excuse to stop work because there's no more daylight. That sucks. In the PI, you can always count on the sun setting around 6pm 365 days a year. It was a major adjustment when we moved here in the midwest. Plus the sky is too low.

World Bank -investing firm opens doors to Mindanao SMEs (DAVAO)
May 5, 2006
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/05/05/bus/wb.investing.firm.opens.doors.to.mindanao.smes.html)

MINDANAO draws the support of the World Bank's International Finance Corporation (IFC) in sustaining private sector investment as the largest international microfinancing fund provider recently opened here and poured in a portfolio via an SME development program called the Private Enterprise Partnership (PEP)-Philippines.

Owned by 178 member-countries providing share capital, IFC serves as the private sector arm of the World Bank Group and is committed to promoting sustainable private sector investment in developing countries, helping to reduce poverty and improve people's lives.

IFC opened its Davao City office, particularly located at LandCo building along J.P Laurel Ave., last April 26 and launched the PEP Philippines program to give focus on Mindanao as a potent area for SME development.

Despite being the economic pump-primer, the SME sector generally suffers from poor access to credit and financing, technology and the high cost of doing business.

SMEs comprise 99.6% of business establishments in the Philippines and contribute to 69.1% of national employment and 32% of value-added.

With IFC's PEP program, which is equally funded by IFC and the governments of Australia and Canada, access to finance, business linkages and business-enabling environment will be enhanced to help small and medium enterprises in Mindanao.

The program's SME assistance in Mindanao will focus on three key areas such as rural finance, seaweed and investment climate reform.

In improving access to finance for SMEs, PEP program will help increase the flow of capital to small businesses through SME banking and countryside financing.

It will particularly help commercial banks to downscale through credit training, risk management and incentive programs as well as help microfinancing institutions access capital to support production development, process improvement and industry strengthening.

The program will also help facilitate business linkages between large and small businesses through supply chain development particularly in seaweeds and horticulture, linking Mindanao with Manila and beyond; and promoting OFW entrepreneurship.

In helping promote a favorable business environment for SMEs, PEP program aims to develop alternative resolution mechanisms for SMEs as well as identify regulatory and policy challenges for SMEs and remove obstacles to SME development such as "red tape".

Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, OIC-Chair of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco), lauded the implementation of PEP program in Mindanao, saying that such undertaking will significantly contribute to government's effort of empowering SMEs as potent force in the nation's war against poverty.

"With the current development imperatives in Mindanao, it is fortunate that IFC is here to assist us in upgrading the productivity and value-added capabilities of our SMEs," he said.

He added that IFC and Medco can collaborate in convening the local government units (LGUs) and discuss areas of improvement in business registration procedures and other governance-related programs.

Manufacturing firm reopens branch here
May 5, 2006
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/05/05/bus/manufacturing.firm.reopens.branch.here.html)

ATLAS Copco Phils. Inc. (ACPI), world-renown manufacturer of industrial equipment, re-opened its sales, marketing, and service office in Davao City to assist its growing clientele in Southern Mindanao.

Atlas Copco's Davao branch, located at Door 5, GGO Summit Bldg. on the corner of Vinzon and Dacudao streets in Agdao, had its inauguration on May 3.

"This is also part of our expansion program," said Jonnie F. Regis, ACPI general manager.

He said they are at present serving at least 60 clients in Davao Region and the city of General Santos. "We are targeting at least 200 more clients this year," he said.

The launching of APCI's new branch in the city took place four years after it shut down its former office in 2002.

"We then allowed our (former) distributors to market our products here, but they were never good at all," Regis said.

APCI, according to Regis, is the global provider of state-of-the-art products and leader in quality, productivity and service.

"Our products are manufactured in Europe and other parts of Asia," Regis said.

The company, he said, offers various products and services that are categorized into three distinct divisions.

Under its compressor technique, which focuses on providing customer needs in the areas of compression and treatment of air and gases, it develops and manufactures industrial, stationary and portable compressors, generators, air dryers, after-coolers and some gas and process compressors and expanders.

The construction and mining technique, on the other hand, develops, manufactures and market rock drilling rigs and tools, breakers and geo-technical drilling equipment for industry needs in rock excavation, light construction, demolition and exploratory digging.

Finally, the Atlas Copco tools and assembly (Acta) concentrates on the areas of pneumatic and electrical power tools for industrial and professional customers, as well as assembly systems. Industrial tools provided by Acta are used for drilling, grinding, riveting and nut and screw tightening.

Regis said the products and services the company has been offering, along with technological and information know-how, proved to be beneficial to local industries, such as those engaged in mining, construction, manufacturing, agriculture, shipping and pharmaceuticals.

The company, according to Percival Bualat, ACPI-VisMin branch manager, remains bullish on Soutern Mindanao's economy, particularly with the re-activation of the mining industry in the area and expansion programs of agri-based companies.

"We serve both big and small industries," he said.

i agree!!!! pero Robinsons already allotted a budget for a mall development in Davao na rin! ehehehehhehe so let's give 'em a chance too!!! After all, it's their gain (the investors)! Imagine this..Davao's market is not limited sa Mindanao area...considering that Indonesians and Malaysians visit our metro frequently. May mga koreans pa, diba their planning to build up a Korean Village in Davao? Also, there are only three Philippines-Korea Vocational Training Center in the Philippines - Quezon City, Bulacan, and Davao City - kaya dumadami ang mga koreans rin.

Yung mga taga Manado, pag nagkakasakit, they choose Davao than their capital kc mas malapit dito. Sobrang vast ng market in Davao!

by the way. I contacted my mom who is connected with Sta Lucia Realty (Ortigas Office) - but with a different marketing arm (which is Royale Homes) she said that most of their top calibers in the marketing department are planning to transfer in Davao to market their projects (SunCity, South Pacific, Ranchos, etc) especially Riverfront. She also confirmed the upcoming developments in Riverfront Corp. City. She said that a mall development was disclosed to them however the name of the mall or the investor was not divulged.

After the Asean Tourism Forum - Davao is now morphing to become one of the international cities in Southeast Asia!

you got it right! i aint sure if u've already checked this news (http://www.mindanews.com/2006/04/26nws-infra.htm). sabi nga ni Mario Lopez (a professor in the Asian Institute of Management), Davao is starting to reverse the trend. Here lemme post a part of the article.

"On Davao, Lopez said that it was beginning to attract to its fold "the young and the professionals", saying that this was reversing the trend when people were expected to leave their cities and hometowns usually for Cebu and Manila.

"It is now able to reverse that trend, and as far as I know of some people, even the young graduates and professionals were talking about Davao as an alternative to the busy and congested Metro Manila and Cebu," he said.

"You have the Starbucks, the Figaro café, almost all the things that these young people used to frequent in Metro Manila. And Davao has still more to offer, for instance, you can go to a beach some kilometers away and you can swim," Lopez said.

Asked if the migration of these youths to Davao City could signal progress, Lopez said that "it may, if the city would be able to attract the best minds from them, or the professionals and the business minded."

Though i aint sure about sa Starbucks ha...ehehehehehhe....ako nga, im planning to go back sa Davao and have my own small business! i strongly believe that it's the best place to invest (especially for a newbie like me). Low cost of doing business, 5 cities as the target market (Davao, Tagum, Digos, Panabo, and Samal) plus the nearby General Santos City and Cotabato, 3 provinces (Davao del Sur, Davao del Norte, and Davao Oriental), and the EAGA!

For the lovely Scandinavians, Lena & Brigit...heres some durian essentials to bear in mind before you visit Davao....Am sure Dinabaw will present you this during your dinner d_ _ _ ? hmmmmm....

What's a "Durian?"
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f19/Onibag1072001/Durianfruit1.jpg
Imagine the best, most delicious, and sensuous banana pudding you can imagine, add just a touch of butterscotch, vanilla, peach, pineapple, strawberry, and almond flavors, and a surprising twist of — garlic??!! Like many of life’s greatest experiences, eating durian cannot be adequately described with words. Durian has a characteristic delicious flavor, creamy texture, and tantalizing fragrance that is just... durian! — the king of fruits, Nature’s most magnificent fruit gift. Durians vary greatly in quality, but the really good ones...I can’t imagine a more delicious, sensuous, and exquisite food in existence on this planet.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f19/Onibag1072001/Durianfruit2.jpg
The durian has a primeval quality — this very nutritious and delectable fruit occurs to me as perhaps the original optimum primary food of Nature intended for human beings’ provision in the prehistoric jungle wild.
http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f19/Onibag1072001/Durianfruit-collage.jpg
The durian tree is a strong, powerful, majestic tree that appears to have no inbuilt genetic program to die; if older trees die after centuries, it is the result of damage by wind, lightning, flood, humans, or soil deterioration followed by weakness and disease—not the result of sheer old age. Eating the extremely delicious, delightful, and nutritious fruits showered by this benevolent tree is an incredible influence for the health, strength, and longevity of your body. It's a true Tree of Abundant Life.

Heart center gets more equipment
By Antonio M. Ajero

THE first batch of P200-million worth of heart equipment granted by the Dutch (Netherlands) government arrives Friday, according to Dr. Gerardo Cunanan, DMC chief.

The equipment will be installed in the three-story heart center building constructed from the funding assistance of P75 million from the pork barrel of former senator Ernesto Maceda in 1998.

The second batch of equipment from the Dutch grant is expected in April and because of this, the center will begin performing open-heart surgeries in July or August, Dr. Cunanan said.

Cunanan said that DMC has a team of surgeons and nurses trained in performing open heart surgeries.

He said the initial funding assistance from Maceda was enough only for the construction of what might be considered the skeleton of the heart center and a few heart equipments.

"Anyway through the years, nakakuha mig ginagmayng funding, so we were able to slowly built the first, second floor and now we're building the third floor," the DMC director said.

He said the heart center, which will cater to patients in Mindanao, is good for least last 50 patients at a time.

Dr. Cunanan said the heart center is just a portion of a multi-specialty complex in the grand plan of the Davao Medical Center. In the planning boards are other specialty units to rise adjacent to the heart center such as the lung center, the kidney center and the cancer or oncology center.

Based on his long experience in managing DMC, Cunanan said hopefully all specialties will be completed in the next 10 to 15 years.

As of now, the Davao Medical Center is the best-equipped hospital in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Hi MtAPo, I hope you could post the pic of the Mindanao Heart Centre which is the 3 or 4 storey edifice sitting farthest at the back of the DMC Complex. If construction has been completed, the structure is a thing of beauty in itself.

This rounds of to 2 Heart Centres in the Mindanao Island- 1 score for each of the 2 humongoes private and public medical facilities in Mindanao-only in Davao!

you got it right! i aint sure if u've already checked this news (http://www.mindanews.com/2006/04/26nws-infra.htm). sabi nga ni Mario Lopez (a professor in the Asian Institute of Management), Davao is starting to reverse the trend.

Hi Bro, Davao has a young province chipped off from the mother province- Davao del Norte called COmpostela Valley Davao Province and its capital municipality is the budding town of Nabunturan.

All in all there are 5 cities and 4 provinces (going 5 if plans to make a Davao Occidental Province out of Davao del Sur don't miscarry) in Davao Region.

^^ archipino, toronto during summer has it at 9:30pm. weird, and i find it difficult to sleep sometimes. some parts in northern canada has the sun up for 24 hours, now that is weird.

same here Paul, the sun comes out sooo early in the morning and sets soooo late at night that your sleeping time is soooo reduced to only 6 hours or less. It makes me feel soooo cranky each day he he... or maybe it's just me.

Kadayawan Festival Countdown:

100 days before Kadayawan Festival

Madayaw - a warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is "Kadayawan," a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.

Although already a customary practice of the indigenous people of Davao, the thanksgiving festival was institutionalized in 1986 to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law years. It was then called "Apo Duwaling," a contraction of the famous icons of the city - namely Mt. Apo, Durian and Waling-waling. Two years later, it was renamed "Kadayawan sa Dabaw" to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration.

Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of many other festivals in the region as it honors Davao's artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral "lumads", its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city.

Kadayawan sa Dabaw is an enriching experience with a difference as it explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain unparalleled. Be part of the experience.

Du-aw na sa Kadayawan! Du-aw na sa Davao! Maglipay ta!

The Prayer Mountain of The Name Above Every Name Church of which the pastor is Apollo Quiboloy is now open to public apart from being the regular host to both local international religious gatherings. You have to do pre-booking at their office at Jose Maria College Campus in Buhangin Diversion Road. Once in the vicinity, strict adherence to house rules are encouraged though, to preserve solemnity and serenity of the place.

SF's great..it's spring time and the rains have finally stopped. We had a rough and ugly late winter and early spring. Rained for a month.

Dublin huh? I lived just a few miles from it. in Castro Valley. You may have seen some of the freeway signs.

Anyway, I really miss Davao and can't wait for a visit. It's been almost 3 1/2 years.
