Archipino May 5th, 2006, 08:03 PM SF's great..it's spring time and the rains have finally stopped. We had a rough and ugly late winter and early spring. Rained for a month.
Dublin huh? I lived just a few miles from it. in Castro Valley. You may have seen some of the freeway signs.
Anyway, I really miss Davao and can't wait for a visit. It's been almost 3 1/2 years.
Seen the signs! The freeways are crazy in CA. Non-stop traffic. An the rains, I heard it in the news. That should have been a winter event.
Well, it's been 20 years for me. My parents went to Davao not too long ago. Daghan na daw tao ug buildings. Not like the Davao we saw before. They said Davao is very beautiful now. Makes me homesick.
JoeyIncali May 5th, 2006, 08:34 PM ^^ langhiya ka junex, parang nakikita ko na ang sarili ko mamaya sa durian park... i'll buy 2 pieces and eat it in 2 minutes yum yum :)
this picture alone inside The Venue building, featuring just one corner of it... masasabi mo nang ang laki talaga. hindi pa kasama dyan ang sa labas (Venue Compound) where you can find numerous bars under one roof (biggest umbrella i've even seen actually).
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/venue1.jpg
THE VENUE, like JACK'S RIDGE and MTS... are examples of world class places na hindi masyadong nababalita sa ibang lugar. exclusive for davaoeños kumbaga. first time davao visitors often said "wow meron pala kayong ganito? hindi ko to nakita sa amin and i think yung sa amin na ang pinaka the best!"
Freddie Roach ( Pacman's trainer ) mentioned in his interview, he dated that Davaoena at Jack's Ridge. :-)
Pacman had him take 3 bodyguards but Freddie said he didn't see why they needed any bodyguards.
davaoeagle May 5th, 2006, 08:47 PM So it's open on any religion? As far as religious gathering, do you mean worship/mass type? Parties?
Yes you'r right Arch, it doesn't have to be a visit of religious purpose but a stroll and stuff is ok.
Religious gathering would mean any religious congregation of any denomination can gather there for any religious purpose be it national or international conventions, church event planning, church recollection, etc, etc.
MtApoStandard May 5th, 2006, 09:15 PM Hi MtAPo, I hope you could post the pic of the Mindanao Heart Centre which is the 3 or 4 storey edifice sitting farthest at the back of the DMC Complex. If construction has been completed, the structure is a thing of beauty in itself.
This rounds of to 2 Heart Centres in the Mindanao Island- 1 score for each of the 2 humongoes private and public medical facilities in Mindanao-only in Davao!
an on-going construction of Mindanao Heart Center sourced from dmc website. as you can see on its top, it looks still open for vertical expansion.

Big thanks to yoy MtApo for the pics. I'd like to point that probably the Mindanao Heart Centre building should have been completed this time as add'l fundings were made available 2 years ago (courtesy of a senator) for it.

Hello!
Yes, talking about religious spots. One of Macau's icon is the ruins of St. Paul Church. Soon, Davaoenos can fly direct to Macau and see this site. :)
Here's why - just posted in my blog:
Big News on Davao's biggest jackpot! (http://www.funchain.com/post/0000002525)
Big news for our big jackpot! Viva Macau Airlines is a go to fly to Davao. Timetable - August 2006. Right time for the Kadayawan Festival.
Viva in Macau, Madayaw in Davao!
Executives of the new airline are now working on the regulatory requirements. Davao del Norte Rep. Antonio Floirendo is among those helping the airline. He earlier hosted lunch at Pearl Farm for the visiting Viva Macau group who were here two weeks ago.
I believe this is Davao's biggest jackpot because this will be the first foreign airline to fly to Davao since we opened the new airport three years ago. If it is successful, I know others will follow.
Macau is a fast-growing tourist destination almost rivaling Hong Kong in the Pearl River Delta of south China. It has transformed itself not just a gaming center in Asia, but a destination with a variety of attractions - cultural, culinary, entertainment, shopping, among others. It has even become a new wedding site for Filipinos.
The new carrier aims to bring in tourists to Macau from new markets in Europe, Africa, Middle East and Asia.
For instance, Andrew Payne, CEO, and Arthur Lai, Director of Commercial Operations, were in Moscow a week before they flew to Davao two weeks ago. They see the Philippines as the next favorite destination of Russian tourists.
Davao can cash in on these potential new markets with the air link from Macau.
Viva Macau plans to reach the south Pacific as well like Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Davao can certainly play an important link in this route.
Hooray! Even if it is redundant, let me write mabuhay, madayaw, viva Viva Macau!

I just read an article about the planned SIR at Times Beach. I'm glad to learn that you have suggested building high-rise structures for the slum dwellers ala HK and Singapore there and creating a grass-root 'growth' zone along this area. We'll pray hard for this as well, Konsehal. :)

good news on the development. I hope tiger air flies a sing-dvo-macu route to as this will lower prices dramatically. Pal has announced Davao HK flights , I'm more worried about them blocking it than the beaurocrats they're the only ones with an agenda (maybe you can add Cebu Pacific as well !). Anyway am happy to see this. I'm curious if this is part of the open skies or just unused bilateral air rights. Xzibit said there were numerous unused bilateral air rights which is sad if true.

Hi Lena, its just a corny joke...i was just laughing on the annecdote that there is a might  :pepper: after eating Durian, its a twist of fate that most of the consumers are adults as per my observations...hehehe...
Anyway, i meant to introduce to you "MARANG" fruit which is also exotic / endemic(?) in Davao which i think Dinabaw haven't yet introduced to you aight?..I hope you like it too....well, youngsters are fond of it because of its sweetness and refreshing scents and i never heard any criticism from any who eats MARANG, unlike Durian that some will even flee just to avoid the smell...hmmm they're just judging the smell not the taste and the _ _ _ _ :)

there was a huge billboard in buhangin sometime in the 90s. this was initiated by bamrepac(?) or bangsa moro re... btw, bamrepac's office is still in buhangin. the group went to brunei to seek financial assistance (per my interpretation of news article posted before). wala sigurong kumagat kaya di natuloy.
i guess Dvo-Palau flight is not that strong at the moment...
we cant expect more from palau since their population is only 20,000. mas daghan pag tao ang matina. but lets wait till tourists (esp divers) discover the newly-launched asian spirit flight to divers' paradise.
@sleepwalker: kit an na nako ssc banner sa may 16. ahahaha. nindot kaayo!
proudly DAVAO gyud bai!
:applause: :applause: :applause:
thanks bro. everyday yan ang banner ko. daily ko pinapalitan date ng pc ko just to see our banner. haha.

Davao at crossroads of Global Christian IPs meeting
by Romy Sabaldan
Davao City (6 May) -- Davao City will be at the crossroads of the worldwide gathering of Indigenous Peoples (IPs) of different creed, color and race as 1,500 participants gather for the 6th World Christian Gathering on Indigenous People (WCGIP).
This will be on September 11-17, 2006 at the Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao in this bustling city of some 1.5 million population which is also home to a variety of tribal communities numbering 40 Indigenous Tribes and several ethnic minorities.
“This is cultural revitalization to a level where the principles of Christianity is more pronounced in the midst of the diverse practices and cultures of all the indigenous peoples all over the world.” Says Maria Elena Bicaldo, Conference Director, WCIGP Philippines, during the regular Friday Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency).
Bicaldo announced the upcoming big event together with Terry Le Blanc, a native of Edmonton Canada and National Director of My People International and his Davao counterpart Andry Lim of the Tribal Mission Foundation International.
Le Blanc enthuses with great expectations on the global conference with Davao City as host saying “You in Davao are gracious and wonderfully hospitable people!”
The worldwide IPs gathering banners the theme “We believe that Indigenous People holds the key to the revival of the land.” (PIA) http://www.pia.gov.ph/news.asp?fi=p060506.htm&no=06

It's Chimes Mall - this is Davao's answer to Rustans / Podium or malls for the Class As. Shoppers go for signature clothes -- from the Gretchen Baretto-endorsed Plains and Prints to Diesel pants to Jack Nicklauss apparel – will find this place enjoyable.Chimes is a comfortable, not-so-big three-storey specialty mall that houses almost all signature products.

Did you Know?
One of Chimes' occupants is Velvet Rose Lingerie. Velvet Rose Lingerie, established in June 2003, is the Philippines ' first lingerie specialty store. Their first shop is at the 3 rd level of Robinson's Galleria in the Ortigas Business District. Women, both working or stay home, have continuously raved and patronized our products, encouraging us to expand to a second store, this time at the nearby Shangri-la Plaza Mall.
In September 2004, Velvet Rose Lingerie launched in Davao City , at the 2 nd level of the Chimes Mall in General Sales St. , marking its first entry outside the Metro Manila market.

Most of its shoppers - as what ive heard, are Davao Elites, Class As, or mga fashionistas!

I left Davao two months after graduation.. June 2005. Lived at different places, but last place was at Roxas Avenue. :)
So it was there since 2004? Hmm... either i didn't pay attention when someone mentioned it... or none of my friends went there... or maybe I didn't really notice it back then...or maybe because I'm not part of the "elites" hehehe. :hm:

Unfortunately, forgotten already!
When Erap was president, he committed to Mayor Duterte to help the city with the Ulas Junction flyover.
Nawater sa Edsa Dos.
Five years hence, no news about it under this new administration. :bash:

don't have to be part of the so-called Davao "elite" to get in there, but once you're in there you'd realize that it is indeed expensive unless you're not budget-conscious or you just wanna window-shop. I've been there and for me it's really quite expensive. on the other hand, the coffee shop beside it - FIGARO, though quite expensive too is really nice!!! I've been there and I do recommend you to go there. I wanna go there again soon. :)

Another Trivia-Did you know? That Figaro Davao in Chimes Mall is the first Figaro Cafe in Visayas and Mindanao. Later on they expanded in Cebu however Figaro Cebu can only be found in Waterfront Hotel's Casino in Lahug.
Another proof of Davao's purchasing power.....Davao indeed has a vast market...so mga investors jan - planning to invest in Mindanao? don't settle for less and invest in Davao!

Do you know who owns Figaro and Chimes?

Yup I have konsehal....I'll be in Davao this August during the Kadayawan weeklong festival....I wish I can be there this July.
We have a lot of things to do regarding Davao's ICT industry. Approved na yung investment incentives right? I am also excited with Silicon Gulf Diamond. I hope and pray that PLDT and the other sectors involved (Marco Polo, Aldevinco, ADDU, and our LGU) would support this plan.
The IT industry is beyond the current callcenter trend..so let's fully promote our city as a real IT Hub not only for callcenters but for other BPOs and IT companies.

Owner of Chimes is Felcris Group - Yap Family; I believe Figaro Davao is owned by group that includes Willy Yap of Felcris/Convenience Store-chain/Chimes and Lorenzo Te, Jr. of Honda Cars.
Matina Crossing Traffic can be solved by the following:
1. Use of Diversion Road for those going north and vice-versa;
2. Use of Matina Aplaya Road to go direct to downtown via Times Beach/SM and vice-versa;
3. Follow traffic rules at the Matina Crossing junction like pedestrian crossing, no parking, no unloading, etc. :)

Konsehal, I'm not sure if you already knew this.. one of our coforumers posted some of the upcoming developments in Riverfront Corporate City
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/riverfront101.jpg
After the ASEAN tourism forum, Davao is about to embark on projects that would make Davao soar like an eagle. Next year will never be the same at Riverfront Corporate City. From a reliable frontliner, under negotiations are:
1. Suria KLCC Mall, Malaysia
2. Amari Watergate Hotel (300++ rooms highrise about 30 storeys), Thailand
3. Grand Plaza Parkroyal Hotel (400++ rooms highrise about 40 storeys), Malaysia
4. An Australian Highrise Hotel in Matina
I hope these upcoming projects will be pursued! :)

Yeah Im in touch with Sta Lucia and Sonny Dizon. Two months ago , I presided the Committee on Housing, Rural and Urban Dev public hearing re new residential subd. as Phase I expansion of Riverfront Corporate City. Approved na.
Hopefully the big ones can finally decide. Construction can take two years. By that time, we anticipate more airlines would directly fly here to fill up the new hotels. :)

Wow! Great news!
I hope our local government and Davao Investment Promotion Center will aggressively support and promote Riverfront Corporate City. The 45 hectare business park can become a new business district in Davao. This is a best spot for tourism related businesses, IT investments, retail and corporate offices.
Riverfront Corporate City can become one of the nodes that will propel Davao as an International City and one of the preferred investment sites in Southeast Asia.

SiliconGulf May 7th, 2006, 06:35 PM TJBrewed, I'll be home in Davao from July onwards, for good! It will be the first time in more than a decade that I will be attending Kadayawan! I'm excited! :)
Yes, Davao should focus on ICT beyond ICT-enabled services like call centering. What I'm encouraging Davao IT schools is to do is also focus on creativity for the students to create their own products and services...

As what I've read on news articles online...These projects are part of the DIDP (Davao Integrated Development Plan). But this is a long term plan.
This year, the city council already passed a resolution to conduct a study of LRT construction in the city. Let me post the news about it:
Council approves study on LRT construction
March 8, 2006
MindanaoTimes (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=10710)
Traffic jam and transportation problems could be solved with the construction of a Light Railway Transit in the city.
Members of the city council unanimously approved on second reading a six-month feasibility study of the Davao Transport Strategic Project, which includes the construction of a Light Railway Transit (LRT) yesterday.
Councilor Jesus Zozobrado said Javlon International Philippines, Incorporated, a Philippine-based company has volunteered to make the study without any expense on the part of government.
The study would start as soon the memorandum of understanding (MOU) will be signed between the two parties with Mayor Rodrigo Duterte representing the city.
He said though that Duterte has the prerogative to approve or decline the conduct of the study even it is passed by the council.
The study’s aim is to primarily look into the viability of possible transport facility and other infrastructures that could be applicable to the city.
He said after the study is conducted, it would be returned to the local government for review and verification and it could either be approved or rejected.
“Actually the scheme there is after the conduct of the study it would be sold to prospective investors provided that the city approves it,” he said.
Zozobrado said the study is the first step in realizing a dream of a cheaper and a more convenient mode of transportation for the people of Davao and the nearby places.
He said the benefits of having an LRT are evident in many places around the world. According to Zozobrado, in Chicago, United States of America the traffic flow is regulated because of LRT.
He said owners of cars from the suburbs would have to leave their cars in the station and ride the LRT to the city. Those who bring their cars are made to pay hefty rates.
“If we can do that here, we would have a smooth flow of traffic and the government will earn at the same time,” he said.
Zozobrado also clarified to Councilor Diosdado Mahipus that the MOU does not fall under the Built-Operate and Transfer scheme in favor of Javlon and would be open for bidding for various institutions in the future. :)
This year, the city government's priority projects are:
1. Davao GreenBelt Park
2. Davao Sports Complex
3. Acquisition of a sanitary landfill
Konsehal i hope you dont mind us askin, any updates regarding the LRT feasibility study?

If it would be a Big R just like in CDO it might not click in a market like Davao and where malls are spankingly spacious. IMO
MtApoStandard May 8th, 2006, 06:40 AM How bout Republic of Palau? and also the first US Virtual Consulate in Asia!
yes tj there is palau. it covers i learned the whole of mindanao especially davao where they have strong ties.
It's a virtual consulate of usa because they have no formal physical office. so all i understand is it functions as full capacity consulate in mindanao except that you are dealing manila staff directly. But i learned too there presence in mindanao is in/ or through a US library Center in Ateneo de Davao University.

That Maguindanao hotel is not so old, I think it was built by the Robillo's in what the late 60's or early 70's? Used to be the tallest building in Davao for skyscraper city enthusiasts :)

I think the tora tora at jack's ridge is not the real thing...it looks like its made of concrete, its more of a replica...the size is a bit smaller than the real ones as well...but still they did quite an impressive work... :)

Good evening Davao!!!
sleep: for me, karls @SM is the cheapest i've gone to so far. anyway, it depends on what you order. i hope starbucks (the most expensive i've gone to so far) will open here in Davao.
thanks, it's actually my first time to post pix here. just learned about photobucket from my baby. am still learning. do have more pix but we are on it so we've decided not to post. what's your cam? also have probs taking pix at night. but i think you must not move the cam after a few secs from pressing the shutter, unless your cam is really cool and have better features than our cam.

Happy LA and Konsehal will be our honorary members. By doing so, we can lobby for anything for Davao more officially...hehehe just a wild suggestion folks :) ...but you know, great achievement begins with a simple idea and a simple step forward...

Hello Lena  in terms of being very liberated, yeah I can attest to that. There was once a group of nurses from europe some of them coming from Sweden who spent a couple of months in Davao Medical Center as part of their exposure and familiarization tour. Fortunately, most of them were assigned at our Department so there was a lot of i should say personal bonding and "exploration" during their entire stay :wink2:
Aside from the common traits you've mentioned above, i think what makes swedish girls very appealing is their incomparable motivation to live life to the fullest...at least to what I had perceived :wink2: :naughty:
Regading the pix...hehehe...just see the exotic Davaoeños and Davaeñas for yourselves the time you will be here...its part of the "surprising" package...hehehe :hahaha:

@Happy LA: allowed ba ang children to visit the pawikan sanctuary? Parang educational tour na rin for the kids.
tj_brewed May 9th, 2006, 11:35 AM Here's how I envision Davao 30 years from now...
Davao will fully become a Green Megapolis. A well preserved nature will be one of the megapolis' pride. The main mode of transportation will be the LRT system (which is currently being studied by Javlon International Philippines this year (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=10710) ). The DIDP - Davao Integrated Development Plan will be fully implemented. Such projects within DIDP (business parks, LRT, Marina Tourism Complex - proposed by Palafox Associates, cultural park, etc.) will be materialized. Davao will become one of the premier International Cities in SouthEast Asia along with Singapore, Bangkok, and Kuala Lumpur. Davao residents will enjoy a superb quality of living.

Davao Greenbelt Park by 2036
be careful what you dreamed of, baka magkatotoo. sige ka. haha.
i wish sana after the completion of green park, sanitary landfill, elias lopez sports complex... the city will push through the development of ppa/sta ana wharf-bucana into world-class marina, davao river park & promenade from bucana to riverfront corporate city, LRT project, the city's powerlines/electric cables be buried below. unta underground na. i think davao light will be capable in the future knowing davao light is the country's most high-tech power distribution company. i wish more underpass than flyovers/overpass. unta tanang eskwelahan naay maayo nga sports facilities, instead of the city building them. mas maayo nga school-based. ex: football field sa city high, aquatic center sa pwc, baseball sa usep, equestrian sa UM matina, basketball court sa ateneo matina, etc. and last wish, an iconic landmark. maybe a monument or a tower within green park or sa marina complex.
with that, maybe davao can bid for regional games or world exposition. mas maayo nga andam ta og naa tay ikapakita before bidding sa mga dinagko nga events para dili ta maulawan.
edit:
og pahabol, sakit akong buot anang mga informal settlers, land-grabber. mga bagag nawong. unta the city can get rid of them. lets have a decent vertical mass housing project. og unta dili tolerant ang ciudad sa mga taong gihimo nag profession ang squatting.
good evening to all. gtg.
abskess May 9th, 2006, 04:07 PM Here's how I envision Davao 30 years from now...

SiliconGulf May 9th, 2006, 08:21 PM When I went home to Davao last December, I noticed that many signages, banners and printed materials had a common font. It was so common I thought it was official or something.
I searched on the Net and found that this ethnic festive font was called Arriba-Arriba, which, unfortunately, isn't a free font. Here it is, for those interested to purchase online (http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/detail.htm?pid=203735). Great news Konsehal! This goes to show the government's commitment in promoting Davao's ICT.
@SiliconGulf:
I hope this initial step will also pave the way for an organization much like Cebu's CEDF-IT for the promotion of ICT in Davao. With the involvement of all academe, government, industry and civil sectors, we can further increase Davao's competence in ICT.
More power to all!

Animo May 10th, 2006, 05:21 AM The fastest growing city in the Philippines after Manila is Davao. It is the home of the ethnic Bagobo, Mandaya, Manobo, Tiboli, Mansaka, and B'laan tribes. Tribal settlements ere mostly found along the banks of the mighty Davao River. The name Davao was derived from the word Daba-daba hich evoked images of fire-breathing mythical figures and rituals of fire set before tribal wars. The other settlers along the banks of the Davao River were tribes from the neighboring provinces of Kotabato, Zamboanga, and Jolo. Earlier conquests by the Spaniards failed until the mid-19th century when they were able to overrun the Moslem enclaves in Davao. Christian settlers arrived soon after the conquest.
The Spaniards came to Davao led by a Captain Uyanguren. Uyangeren built the first Spanish settlement and was named Nueva Vergara. Trade was started although Davao floundered during that era because of the distance from Manila, which was the major Spanish trading outpost.
In 1939, Davao became a chartered city. Davao began to grow as an urban area. It was during that time Filipinos were being urged to settle in Mindanao which was promoted as the "Land of Promise". People who did heed the urgings of the central government headed towards Davao. These mostly Christian emigrates eventually drove the natives further south.
Right before World War II, Davao had a big population of Japanese migrant workers who toiled in the vast Abaca plantations in and around the province. Davao even had a section of the city which was known as "Japantown". During the war, Davao became a regional headquarters for the Japanese Imperial Army. When Davao was liberated by the Allied forces, the city was demolished in the process. The rebuilding process began soon after.
One industry that benefited Davaoenos was logging. Loggers were the one group of businessmen that profited enought to be able to invest in other aspects of the local economy. Sadly, not enough was done to replenish the forests that now remain mostly denuded.
During most of the 60's and 70's Davao's economy remained stagnant. The early 80's saw a resurgence in the economy but the city was beleaugered by violence attributed to the armed struggle by the New Peoples Army and the MNLF against the Philippine government. Davao then got the reputation as the "Gun Capital" of the Philippines. Davao became a haven for the underground movement and became the laboratory for urban guerilla warfare. The emergence of an anti-communist group known as the Alsa Masa (Rise of the Masses) began in Davao. This military-backed civilian defense "force" drove the NPA and MNLF away from the city.

Davao City, the capital of the Southern Mindanao Region, is one of the world’s largest cities in terms of land area, spanning 244,000 hectares.
In recent years, the sprawling urban metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub for southern Philippines, winning the hearts and minds of its visitors through its people’s gentle smiles and its diverse cultural and natural riches.
The gateway to the East ASEAN region, Davao City is a melting pot of diverse migrant and indigenous communities, resulting in a unique charm and culture that is woven into a rich tapestry of ethnic and contemporary styles.
Davao City’s slogan, “From Islands to Highlands” perfectly captures its wealth of attractions. The city boasts some of the finest beach and mountain resorts in the country, and close proximity to the Philippines’ most captivating diving spots as well as its highest peak, Mt Apo.
An ideal tourist destination, Davao has it all - cultural interludes, beautiful beaches, fascinating dive spots, and myriad opportunities to commune with nature at its finest.
dinabaw May 10th, 2006, 05:23 AM Wow thread 10 na !!!! go go Davao
Animo May 10th, 2006, 05:24 AM http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/dabawcollage.jpg
Davao City is no stranger to superlatives. It is one of the world’s largest cities, one of the most livable cities in Asia, and one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the Philippines. It even holds the claim to the second best potable water in the world!
The superlatives extend as well to tourism. Davao City has the best access to the country’s highest peak, Mt Apo. It is home too to the second largest eagle in the world, the Philippine Eagle, and the most important Philippine orchid specie, the waling waling or vanda anderiana.
And as its slogan ‘Island to Highland’ claims, Davao City easily covers the entire spectrum of holiday options. Its landscape is such that it can offer coral islands and white-sand beaches along with virgin forests, fruit plantations, and volcano-fed hills and valleys.
The Davao Gulf is peppered with white-sand beaches and coral gardens. Beach resorts, each with their own personal charm, are aplenty in the Island Garden City of Samal. A vast expanse of fine white sand and glistening crystal blue waters awaits the most fervent beach lover at the sprawling Paradise Island Resort. The charming setups of Costa Marina Resort and Chema’s Beach Resort are sure to please sun-and-sand worshippers. Over at Isla Reta, a back-to-basics encounter beckons. For an exclusive and private getaway, tourists can own Buenavista Island for a day. Then, of course, there is the Pearl Farm Beach Resort, which has won raves the world over.
The waters of the Davao Gulf make for excellent snorkeling and diving. The underwater vistas at Mushroom Rock, Ligid Island, Talicud Island are among the best the country has to offer.
At higher altitudes lie fruit plantations, the majestic peaks of Mt Talomo and Mt Apo, and nature resorts. Nestled in cool climes, Eden Nature Park and Malagos Garden Resort come complete with resort accommodation, outdoor activities, flora and fauna sanctuaries, and organic farms, among others. Also in the highlands is the Philippine Eagle Nature Centre, which breeds and urtures the country’s national bird. It presently houses some 30 Philippine Eagles.
In between the islands and the highlands rest many cultural, historical, nature and adventure attractions. The Dabaw Museum at the Insular Village in the north showcases Davao City’s colourful heritage. On display are various authentic costumes, accessories, and implements of the different tribes of Davao. The nearby T’boli Weaving Centre allows a closer look at the making of the tinalak fabric for which Davao is famous.
The city’s oldest church, San Pedro Cathedral, was built in 1847. The original altar can still be found at the cathedral’s right wing. The Shrine of the Infant Jesus of Prague has replicas of its namesake and of Our Lady of Fatima. The open-air chapel offers spectacular views of fruit plantations.
Over at J.P. Cabaguio Street is the Lon Wa Buddhist Temple, the biggest Buddhist temple in Mindanao.
Since Davao City also has a thriving orchid and cut-flower industry, orchid farms and flower plantations abound. Floral havens such as the Malagos Garden Resort and the Puentespina Orchid Gardens are well worth a visit.
And aside from the Philippine Eagle, Davao City’s list of famous wildlife residents also includes Pangil, the Philippines’ second largest crocodile at 18 feet. Pangil shares the Davao Crocodile Farm with pythons, rodents, exotic birds, and other locally bred crocodiles. The adventurous would delight in the Davao Wild Water Adventure, a 13-kilometre whitewater rafting passage on 25 rapids on the Davao River.
Experience Davao - from Islands to Highlands. De facto capital of East Asian Growth Area. The tourism hub of the region. The real international gateway of Mindanao.

Animo May 10th, 2006, 05:26 AM Davao City, Philippines is fast becoming a favorite tourist and business destination. With its picturesque landscapes and rich mix of ethnic cultures, Davao presents a true visual feast.
Fruit and orchid farms cover Davao's rolling hills and fertile valleys. Its virgin forests hosts rare wildlife (including the world's largest eagle).
Its deep blue waters teem with coral reefs. Davao is home to Mt. Apo (the country's highest peak).
Davao is a true melting pot of cultures as migrant settlers from all over the Philippines live in harmony with numerous ethnic tribes and a growing expatriate community.
Davao offers a seemingly endless list of adventures including golf, scuba diving, jet skiing, fishing, horseback riding, and mountain climbing, making it a key sports destination in Asia.
Davao, which now serves as the primary agricultural and trading center of Mindanao and a major source of Philippine exports, presents significant investment opportunities.

Top 10 Things you can do in Davao
1 Looking for a place to stay in Davao is not a problem. There is a wide range of accommodation including five-star hotels, first-class beach resorts, affordable inns and even camping grounds for backpackers on a shoestring budget.
2 A visit to the museum is a must for lovers of art and history. The Davao Museum offers guests an opportunity to understand the Mindanao region’s distinct features including the rich heritage of its Maranao, Yakan, T’boli, Mandaya and Bagobo tribes. Meanwhile, the Japanese Museum in Mintal, Davao City, documents the history of the Japanese community residing in Davao before and during the Second World War.
3 Island hopping is a favourite among visitors to Davao. Bask under the sun on the beaches of the Island Garden City of Samal’s many resorts such as Chema’s, Costa Marina, and Paradise Island. Spend luxurious days relaxing at the Pearl Farm Beach Resort or own Buenavista Island for a day as your own exclusive and private getaway. The spectacular view of the Davao Gulf is a refreshing change from city sights. This vast expanse is home to a variety of marine life and offers ample opportunities for a variety of watersports, scuba diving, and underwater photography.
4 The best time to visit Davao is August when the province celebrates the Kadayawan sa Dabaw harvest festival. Floral parades, street dancing, tribal shows, horse fights and beauty contests highlight the grand occasion. Shopping and dining discounts also await tourists.
5 Christened the “Fruit Basket of the Philippines,” Davao boasts of an abundant supply of mangoes, durians, lanzones, bananas, pineapples, strawberries, pomelos, rambutans, marangs, mangosteens, which are available year-round. A stay in Davao is incomplete without sipping a cup or two of Larcepucchino Durian Coffee at Blu Gre at the Matina Town Square or shopping for pasalubong (gifts) at the Bankerohan Market, which offers some of the cheapest prices for fruits.
6 Looking for a bargain? The best place to go is the Aldevinco Shopping Centre in the heart of Davao City. It is a virtual shopper’s paradise, offering anything from native trinkets, souvenir shirts to batik clothes. Best buys include antiques and replicas, brassware, woodcrafts and native accessories.
7 Treat yourself to gastronomic delights at the Harana Pavilion, of Davao’s best-known native restaurants. Feast on giant clams, juicy prawns, and all kind of fish imaginable, prepared fresh and just the way you like it by the restaurant’s chef. Another place to hang out is Jack’s Ridge at the Matina Heights. The restaurant’s view-deck affords customers a panoramic view of Davao’s skyline at night while its kitchen serves up a delectable seafood feast.
8 Speaking of nightlife, Davao offers plenty of exciting options. Matina Town Square (MTS) houses several fine dining, music and entertainment bars. Taboan at MTS, styled after a Singaporean hawker centre, is the best place to have a beer or two.Drop by on Tuesday and Thursday evenings to view Taboan’s cultural presentations. You can also hop over to The Venue, with its state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, billiards bar and other recreational facilities. Have a good meal and enjoy live music at The Venue Compound, the attached strip of restaurants and bars. Another classy watering hole for the professional crowd is the Rizal Promenade, a pedestrianised alley of bars along Rizal Street.
9 The Malagos Garden Resort in Barangay Calinan is one of the best places to visit when wanting to enjoy the exotic flora and fauna of the region. It houses a variety of fruitbearing trees, butterflies of every size and colour, rare orchids, exotic birds and fish. Scattered around the place are sculptures of National Artist Napoleon Abueva that seem to grow among the flowers. Meanwhile, the Philippine Eagle Nature Centre in Malagos is home to the world’s first eagle hatched and bred in captivity – Pag-asa (Hope). Regarded as the national bird, the Philippine Eagle is the world’s tallest eagle specie with a wingspan of two-and-a-half metres.
10 Davao is also a sportsman’s paradise. There are a lot of places where the sports-minded can play a round of golf or tennis, go diving or fishing, or enjoy spelunking and mountain climbing. Mountaineering clubs organise Holy Week climbs called “Conquer Mt Apo” and semestral-break ascents in October. Spelunking in Samal Island and Tibangao Caves in Sanghay, Malita can be arranged with the Department of Tourism in Davao. For anglers, Cape San Agustin where marlin and tuna abound is the perfect place to try out game fishing skills. For golf enthusiasts, there is the Rancho Palos Verdes Golf & Country Club, which includes part of a tropical forest, a crocodile lagoon, an imposing view of Mt Talomo, and a wildlife sanctuary. Tee off too at the Apo Golf and Country Club.

DAVAO CITY – The selection of Davao City as among the Philippines’s most competitive cities for 2005 is a good sign that it is a conducive place for investment, the Department of Trade and Industry has said.
A study conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) identified the metropolitan cities of Davao, Las Piñas, Makati, Marikina, and Muntinlupa as ideal places for living and doing business.
The AIM, in a statement, said that the study was designed to promote healthy competition among Philippine cities to further motivate local government leaders become economic and development managers apart from being providers of public goods and services.

Davao's Current BIMP (Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Phils.) Trade Partners
While Japan and US have been major investors and trade partners of Davao, the city of Davao is also a major trade partner of some of the cities in the BIMP region including Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Republic of Palau in Micronesia, Manado and Jakarta in Indonesia, Singapore, and Darwin in Australia.
Davao has an existing sea and air linkages to most of its trade partners in BIMP-EAGA. And lately, there are on going negotiations for transport links to other areas such as Australia, Korea, and especially Bangkok - (which is the priority of the local government and business sector since it is an effective link to the whole Mekong Delta region composed of ASEAN members like Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia, and Myanmar.)

North Sulawesi Boosts Ties With Davao City
ASIAPULSE
MANADO, N Sulawesi, Asia Pulse - Indonesia's province of North Sulawesi is strengthening its relations with The Philippine city of Davao in sub-regional cooperation among Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, and The Philippines - East Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), an official said.
The cooperation, however, is focused on marine and fishery affairs, and the handling of some ten thousand Indonesian workers hailing from North Sulawesi, chief of economic affairs bureau of the North Sulawesi provincial administration, Gemmy Kawatu said here Monday.
This is the implementation of the directives given by President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono to the governors of the eastern parts of Indonesia during their meeting in Manado recently, Gemmy said.
Regarding the fishery sector, North Sulawesi province and Davao will focus on the prevention of illegal fishing, and the two sides will conduct a joint sea patrol in the border area, he said.
In addition, North Sulawesi has also studied how Davao had managed its tourism industry, he said, adding that one to two million foreign tourists visited Davao every year.
"North Sulawesi will also focus on solving the problem of its 10,000 workers in the Philippines because only half of them are legal," the official said.
The provincial administration is trying to cooperate with the Philippine government by meeting the country's regulations with a view to legalizing their status, he added.

hahahaha! what winter temp would it be like if your summer is chilly cold! i easily believe on anything told me lena! joke. 20-25*C summer is real bliss. how much sleep do you get if sunlight is round the clock. strange but interesting. the longest day here is sunset at half past 9 i the evening. obviously you like summer. davao has enough of it so bring with you nothing but a pair of thong and two-piece bikini. just kidding. our summer ave highs is 38*C but in hte last summer it rose to a blistering 42*C for couple of days. dry hot air. to where i am, time difference vary with season due to daylight saving time(you know surise and sunset is not fix whole year...). were 1.5H ahead of davao during autumn and winter but 2.5H ahead in spring and summer.
more davao delight

Davao revenue bureau one of RP's top performers
May 10 2006
Source (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/05/10/bus/davao.revenue.bureau.one.of.rp.s.top.performers.html)
BUREAU of Internal Revenue (BIR) Director for Southern Mindanao Marcelinda Omila-Yap said BIR Davao region was cited as one of the top 10 performers in the country in terms of tax collections.
Yap said Davao region ranked number six in tax collections throughout the country next to the cities of Makati, Manila, Baguio, Quezon, and San Fernando.
"This was announced by Finance Secretary Margarito Teves during a meeting held last week in Manila with BIR Commissioner Jose Mario Buñag," she said.
Yap said top government officials were delighted with the performance of the region and urged them to move forward and widen its tax education campaign so that every Filipino will understand the importance of tax collections, and the correct payment of taxes.
BIR Davao has exceeded its target during the first quarter (January to March) by P54.7 million compared to last year's goal.
"The BIR in the region has been conducting surprise inspections. I have instructed revenue district officer Jose Eric Furia to conduct on-the-spot inspections on the city's business establishments and conduct mapping and verification strategies on the wake of mounting complaints reaching our office for non-issuance of official receipts," she said.
Yap said their tax verification drive is usually not announced and that business establishments should not be aware that BIR team is coming to inspect and verify their books of accounts.
"On top of our continuous mapping operations in the region , BIR has been sustaining its tax education effort for the public to know the latest information as far as tax measures are concerned," she said
Tax verification compliance, she said, monitors all business establishments to ensure that they do not violate BIR laws and regulations. :)

The Economy
Government seeks Austrian donation of 16 trains for MRT-3 line
The Transportation department will initiate talks with the government of Austria next month for the donation to the Philippines of 48 of its spare light rail vehicles that are equivalent to 16 trains.
Transportation Assistant Sec. Roberto R. Castañares said the government wants to use the additional rail vehicles to increase loading capacity of the already-overcrowded Metro Rail Transit 3 (MRT-3) on EDSA at low cost.
The Transportation department expects to spend $400,000 to $500,000 to refurbish each rail vehicle, much lower than the projected cost of $2 million per brand new vehicle.
It also expects to secure a 20-year warranty for the upkeep of the trains from European rail vehicle manufacturers doing business with Vienna.
The 13-station MRT-3 is now served by 21 trains that carry 350,000 to 400,000 passengers daily, higher than its normal loading capacity of 300,000 passengers daily.
INCREASED CAPACITY
If the Transportation department can convince Vienna to donate the trains to the Philippines, then the MRT-3 loading capacity will be raised by 200,000 passengers daily.
The trains will have a life span of another 12-15 years, about the same life span of existing MRT-3 trains.
Mr. Castañares said that officials of the Transportation department will fly to Vienna next month to inspect the trains, particularly to determine whether they are technically compatible with the rail standards of MRT-3.
If the trains fit the specifications of MRT-3 and if Vienna would agree to donate them, then delivery can be expected this December, he added.
Refurbishing of the trains will be done in first quarter of 2007 and commercial use of the trains along the MRT-3 revenue line will be scheduled by end of next year.
A European rail vehicle manufacturer with presence in Manila tipped off the Transportation department of the availability of the trains from Vienna, Mr. Castañares said. It said the Vienna Metro Management is set to replace 80 of its rail vehicles that were built from 1979 to 1983. The manufacturer claims that the rail vehicles are "perfectly maintained" and would be available this July.
The Transportation department needs 48 rail vehicles for the capacity expansion program of MRT-3.
Old article but just an idea, specially for our friend in gov't who are looking into the lrt, perhaps this is low cost way for us to get a railway in. Not neccesarily overhead but at grade, they seem to have some extra and you don't need to make them into such long train sets of three. From what I remember they're tram sized in lenght (e.g. mrt 3) and can be used individually first. The railway north and south could run at grade and it would not be much to set it up From Toril to Lanang at first. So if the trains are a fraction of the price, and the civil works are much simpler it's a good start already. Just an idea.

Property & Infrastructure
BY CARMELITO Q. FRANCISCO, Correspondent
Councilor wants to give Davao shanties a face-lift
Davao City -- A city councilor has broached an idea of making slum areas in the city more productive by turning them into economic centers and at the same time solving the housing backlogs.
Councilor Peter Laviña said instead of demolishing slum areas, the city government can give the slum area a face-lift similar to what the administration of then President Marcos did in the past.
Mr. Laviña made the proposal in view of the recent debate at the city council on whether to demolish shanties at the 20-hectare area in Times Beach following the controversy surrounding the statue of David which some considered lewd.
Mr. Laviña said the city government should turn the slum areas into economic enterprises similar to those set up in Sandawa and Piapi districts.
Aside from the housing projects, Sandawa has become a successful model as it has been the location of some businesses, among them hardware stores and bars.
Piapi, a strip of land near the seashore, has also been converted into a housing project and has become a location for small business, although just outside the housing projects, slum areas have mushroomed in recent years.
What the city government should do, Mr. Laviña proposed, is to set up infrastructures and repair streets to lure traders to invest in the area.
The proposal, he said, would also allow the city government to solve the housing problem by building high-rise buildings similar to what key Asian cities did to their squatters like Hong Kong and Singapore, Mr. Laviña said.
Since the city government does not have enough funds for the program, he said it may opt to tap credit.
Roberto Teo, Davao City Investment Promotions Center chief, said the city has about 40,000 backlogs in housing units. This has attracted some housing developers, two of whom started big projects early this year.
But the councilor said the city government should also get rid of so-called "professional squatters," individuals who agree to relocate only to sell their rights to other people so they could again be relocated giving them another opportunity to sell their rights.
scandinavian girl May 10th, 2006, 08:05 PM hahahaha! what winter temp would it be like if your summer is chilly cold! i easily believe on anything told me lena!

Dabawenyo appointed appeals court associate justice
PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has appointed a Dabawenyo as associate justice of the Court of Appeals (CA).
Romeo F. Barza, 57, is born in Lupon, Davao Oriental.
He is the presiding judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 61 in Makati City.
The new CA justice grew up and finished his elementary and high school education at the Ateneo de Davao in Davao City, where his father, Severo, was a long time assistant city engineer.
After finishing BS in Foreign Service, Barza proceeded to take up law at the University of the Philippines in Diliman and passed the bar examination in 1974 with a grade of 81.28 percent.
He likewise completed a program of instruction for lawyers at the Harvard Law School.
Barza has been president of the Philippine Judges Association for three years now.
He adds to a short list of distinguished Dabawenyos who have been appointed either to the Supreme Court (SC) or the Court of Appeals.
The list includes SC Justice Antonio T. Carpio, the late SC justice Leo Medialdea, the late CA justice Leopoldo Abellera and former CA justice Dario Rama.
Among the first to congratulate Barza for his appointment was lawyer Ramon Edison Batacan, former Davao City chapter president of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines.
"All Dabawenyos, not just fellow lawyers, are very proud of Romy," Batacan said.
He added, "With his brilliance and honesty, it is possible Justice Barza may someday be promoted to the SC."
"Mabuhay Davao!" was the text message of former Justice secretary Silvestre H. Bello III when informed of Barza's appointment.
"A Dabawenyo is again called to help cure the ills of our country. We should be proud of him. My congratulations to him and family," former mayor Benjamin de Guzman said.

tj_brewed May 11th, 2006, 07:20 AM Entry of new airline seen to boost tourism industry
May 11, 2006
Source (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=12040)
The entry of Viva Macau Airlines will be a big boost to the tourism industry not just of Davao City, but of the entire region as well, a city councilor said.
Councilor Peter Laviña, who was among those who met with Viva Macau Airlines executives when they were in the city about two weeks ago, said the direct flight between Macau and the city might allow big capitalist from Macau, known for its casinos, to invest in the city.
“We hit a jackpot with the entry of this new airline industry player,” said Laviña, pointing out that by considering Davao City as among the destination, the airline company may have also looked into the potentials of the city and the region in general as investment area.
The company has started securing their license to fly to Davao City with the help of Davao del Norte Rep. Antonio Floirendo, Laviña added. Floirendo, he said, even hosted lunch at the family’s world-class resort in the Island Garden City of Samal, Pearl Farm, for the visiting executives of the airline company.
“Davao can cash in on these potential new markets with the air link from Macau.
Viva Macau plans to reach the south Pacific as well like Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. Davao can certainly play an important link in this route,” he said.
Being a new player in the airline industry, the company “has preferred destinations that are new also,” he said
Macau has grown into a big tourist destination and is competing with Hong Kong in terms of attracting visitors. It is famous for its casinos and one of the big businessmen there is Stanley Ho, who was among those who wanted to invest in the Philippines.
Ho became controversial during the time of then President Joseph Estrada after he invested in a BW Resources, company that got embroiled in the Securities and Exchange Commission.
In its website, Viva Macau said it will “inaugurate services to an international network of cities across Asia, the Middle East and Europe, with a fleet of modern wide-bodied aircraft.”
The company also announced it will lease either Airbus 330-200s or Boeing 767s as it expands its fleet to 12-15 planes by 2010.
“Viva Macau hopes to break even in the first or second year of its operation,” said Andrew Pyne, Viva Macau chief executive officer.

bustero May 11th, 2006, 07:22 AM Here's a pix of the trams/trains the austrian government is DONATING to the Manila MRT 3, hey there are other trains still. Perhaps the city can study getting them and puttin gup the line as I posted above. EVen just an at grade line first about 5 to 10 km long. Of course they need to have the money to refurbish but it's just a fraction fo thenew one and a very good long term investment. ^ trains at 500000$ to fix is jsut Php150 million, just half of the mayor's intelligence fund for one year!
http://www.noevog.at/Foto/badnerbahn2_verkehrsplanung.jpg
here's some better oneshttp://www.wlb.at/ImageViewer.aspx?id=14&type=gallery&size=3 http://www.wlb.at/ImageViewer.aspx?id=22&type=gallery&size=3 See their low floor trams so the city does not even need to build high terminals but we can already get on the bandwagon immediately.
Can you imagine one of them na nakabalot sa ad sticker ni pidoks hehe

Good Morning Mt. that is called rambutan lena (don't know the english name of it). filled with sweet and juicy meat inside that can be peeled off from its seed. looks thorny but they are just soft spines from its rind. you can see them in fruit stalls everywhere during the festival month. they look green but end up red or yellow or orange when ripe.

The Davao Wildwater Adventure, Inc is here to promote water sports particularly whitewater rafting with the Davao River as its playground. We aim to promote Eco-tourism, to bring people closer to nature, to the river. We aim to create awareness most specially about our river. We aim to lead in the practice of safety in water sports. We aim to serve people in providing them an opportunity to experience the magnificent ride into the mighty Davao River.
We all envisioned that our City, our Country would become one of the prime destination of tourists and investors through this humble company of ours. Thus opening opportunities for everybody. We strive improve our services, in terms of professionalism, safety, and great outdoor experiences.
In riding with us, we thank you. For in one way or another you have become one of us in our dreams and our experiences. You make life a little better if not best. We’ll see you downstream… Happy paddling!

Special hi to our wonderful Scandinavian beauties/friends... :)
Thanks a lot for the greetings...evrybody here is very excited and thrilled for that surprise package of yours..hehehehe...
In terms of surviving? you know, Davaoeños had been subjected to a lot of foreign "intrusions and occuptions" and in all those times Davaoeños always managed to survive... :) so for the forthcoming Swedish invasion? hehehe...Davaoeños got "no retreat no surrender" attitude... :)
regards to All... :) :) :)
scandinavian girl May 11th, 2006, 05:10 PM DAVE:wave:what nice rafting pictures wow, wow I want to go, really want to go. Dave hope you are fine and life is good??? Will show these to Bibbi too her favorite sport wow she moved out of my house into the city she has no computer now she used to use mine. But she will be happy seeing these water pics..
KulasKusgan May 11th, 2006, 05:13 PM Here's a pix of the trams/trains the austrian government is DONATING to the Manila MRT 3, hey there are other trains still.
Can you imagine one of them na nakabalot sa ad sticker ni pidoks hehe
pwede rin ad by penongs or colasas or the pito-baynte.
mukhang mas feasible yan. parang metro shuttle plying the city streets. hope javlon will realize that.
i remember dati, per DIDP presentation, the LRT will be at marina complex (sta ana-boulevard-bolton isla) then will pass through the coastal road both north & south. mukhang malabo to.

Nice day abskess!!
Yup not only dreaming ..... ok if we form this NGO group are we leaning toward environment concerns or "all that matters" concerning Davao ,mahirap kasi sa group kung di specific .
Gud day Dinabaw... :)
For me pre, any matter that will affect Davao in one way or another will become the concern of the group. I think it would be more consistent and beneficial if we preserve our nature as forumers and be able to tackle, discuss, talk about all and every issue concerning Davao. Ang drawback kasi pre if we're going to limit to let say environmental or tourism concerns lang is we usually focus ourselves only on one important issue, and the usual tendency is we forget, take for granted, bypass or even intentionally set aside other equally important issues.
My vision for the group is it will serve as the sense organ of Davao. The eyes, ears, voice even taste (hehehe), the catalyst of action for Davao. Kung baga we are looking after the welfare of Davao in a wholistic approach.
If we make it an officially registered organization, all our activities will be easily and readily recognized and in the long run magkakaroon tayo ng mas malakas na lobbying power or voice not only in the city council but maybe even in the national government. Who knows baka may international organization pa na magssponsor sa atin ng familiarization and study tour sa Europe...hehehe...malapit na sa Sweden yun pre...hehehehe :)
You know guys, by doing this, we are making another FIRST for Davao...what ya think bros and sis? :)

The package is just so exciting to open and remember the story form Greece the Trojan horse .......so...."be aware of swedes bringing gifts"...
