Ah yes, I stand corrected. Kanto pala ng Coca-Cola Village. Ano kaya yun?

Feel ko kaya naman cguro iaccomodate ng Landco ang Callbox or any callcenters kuya boyet....well, this is not from an architect's point of view though :D. Familiar ka sa insular building dito sa ayala avenue diba po? yung between JG Summit and Philam life? Diba mas payat pa sya compared to Landco? or if not, i think maliit lang yung difference ng dalawang buildings sa isat isa when it comes to its dimension (tama po ba term ko?). However, may mga contact centers din sa Insular Bldg po.......Convergys and 247. May iilang centers kc na d naman kelangan ng malalapad na areas. :D

That's Robinson's Summit jech... That's our building... 400k ang renta sa floor heheheh....

wow...thats great bro...pero lam mo bro...mejo challenging yung new company ko. Kc australian yung clients namin. eh ang daming differences between Americans and Australians. Lalo na si English nila and their accent. huhuhuhuhuhuhuhuhu kaya nga mejo kabado ako..i have to unlearn all that ive learnt from my American clients during the last 4 years na im with PeopleSupport and Teleperformance USA.

may mga words na iba ang pagkabigkas sa Australian..example:

- sa american english - team...sa australian it would sound as taym

- sa american english - process ...sa australian it would sound as prowcess

- sa american english - Today ...sa australian it would sound as Todai

- sa american english - call ...sa australian it would sound as kuwl

- sa american english - dollar ...sa australian it would sound as doowlar

- sa american english - fly ...sa australian it would sound as floi

at marami pa...at ang hirap ng mga suburbs and cities nila dun ah..marangoo, warrnambool, wangaratta, toowoomba, etc etc....

waaaaaaaaaaa....sana kaya ko to...well kakayanin ko to! :D But one thing that ive learnt sa training ko now re australian accent, culture, etc.....is that Australia is like Davao. Diversed yung culture nila like us in Davao. They have 100 ethnic groups and the rest are migrants. Kagaya satin sa Davao.....Naalala ko, diba there was an article re Davao na ang title is...Davao - the land downunder :D

hehehe... I speak british a bit... but not that smoothly hehehe :D

True story:

Overheard by a close friend of mine from two ladies walking in front of him inside Gaisano South Citimall...

Lady 1 telling Lady 2: "Unsa man ning Davao uy? Everytime muanhi ko, wala gyu'y nagbag-o. Parehas ra gihapon, wala gyu'y bag-o. Maayo pa sa amo didto sa ________, booming kaayo mi didto. Grabe ang asenso, dili pareha diri..."

(This is not an exaggeration, mind you)

---------------------------------------

It is quite interesting to note that people from a certain northern city, mapa forumer man ng SSC or hindi, share a common sentiment of contempt for Davao. It makes me wonder why. Is this something innate in them? If yes, bakit?

Sabi ko nalang sa friend ko: "Gidukol nalang unta nimo!"

I think innate yan sa kanila.

Ana dayon siya nga dapat itry daw nako ang Whitewater rafting kay the best daw in the entire Philipines.

Ana ang host, "oi daming taga- davao, the city of durian, but sorry we dont eat durian, we only eat chocolates". Yati gihilasan ang crowd. Taud-taod nanghawa. Serious man unta to nga bar, dili man to tipong Studio Onnie or Joke Hall. Mga trying hard pasosyal ilang performers.

Its not surprising nga pati dito daming bitter towards us.

Sorry to share my sentiments here.

guys...can we submit this as a davao banner? and papano isubmit and kanino?

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/davaobanner.jpg

The size for banners is 719x123 pixels and it shouldn't have any text on it. Also, do you have a better photo? I don't think this would pass as a banner. I mean, just look at all the banners SSC had (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?t=507745) :)

nagtrabaho ko sa isa ka printing company sa una, kaila mo ana sa ila dave ug ambi. we have this client school from you know where. everything they come and visit us to submit their yearbook materials, they would always speak teGAlog. which made us think, duol man kaha ni sila sa cebu, nganong megteGAlog man gyud sila. the thing is, in those times, our city still has it big, printing-wise. why, nganong ginadayo man gyud ang davao even from schools as far as manila and baguio. when i visited my former employer, their yearbook clients are from ateneo de manila, lasalle, etc.

oh well, tutot mo yan.

^^ txs for being honest kuya rall ... mukhang dalawa lang ang pinanganak sa manila si uncle rajah (makati med) at si sir davaoeagle (ust hospital).... oh hindi to katkat ha

i repeat the question, when was san pedro church built?

the first one? between 1880-1900. i think that is a safe guess. it started out as nipa-roofed kapilya when the christian immigrants from luzon, visayas and east coast (now dvo oriental and some parts of surigao) came.

Siguro isa lang palagi pinupuntahan niya dito that's why she didn't see the big difference. Sa kadako sa Davao di mo masuroy ang place in one day... :ohno: Naa ra siguro siya sa sulod sa mall pirmi unsaon niya pag kakita?

^^ wa siguroy pamashe padulong Eden or even diha Damosa Gateway or MTS

PengHok : i know the feeling, not me them! it's envy in reversed psychology

Hahahahaha! Or maybe just playing a blind eye, don't you think?

Walay alamag ang akong amigo sa mga rifts diri sa forum, pero pagka dungog niya, perting suyaa niya. Kung dili lang daw babae, iya nang gidukol. Hahahahaha

Basin nearsighted.. bwahahahahaha!!! :lol::lol::lol:

Ganon ba yun? Hala kalain ba! Kay naibog, mao na storyahan nalang ug dautan? Hmmmmmm....

I believe there is no point of comparison in the first place. Sa urban landscape pa lang, any average-thinking individual will be able to determine kung unsay tinood...

ay kay below average may diay to siya that's why.. LOL!!!

What do they expect? A certain something that is really different? hahay!

something booming? how impatient they are!

I had the same experience din....2001 when we toured someone from the northern city.....first time nila nivisit dire sa Davao...and eto comments nila:

"mao ra diay ng Marco Polo?"

- lami kaau isabat and ask them, unya kamo naa moy Marco Polo?

"mao diay ng Ateneo de Davao? mas tsada pa man ang among ______"

- lami kaau ipangutana, unsa gud naka tsada sa _____.

" mao raning MTS?" unya order dayun sila og coffee worth 100 pesos something sabay hatag sa credit card"

- huh! mga wa man diay cash! Lami kaau isabat, 100 pesos ra unya icredit card? :hilarious...unya hinawayon kaau sa atong ciudad.

Since then...murag nalain pud akong tan-aw sa ilaha....especially when i saw this news sa ilang newspaper na Goldstar (2001) stating, "### will overpass Davao after 5 years or so" mao na ilang goal, naglagot jud ko....d pa ko taga ssc ato but i had the chance to talk with Vice Mayor Bonguyan and akong gipakita sa iya ang cut out sa news. Although wala pang ssc nun, i had my own website promoting davao called davaotrek.com pero dili na existing ang website nako now.

Bwahahahahaha! Basig walay contact lense? Hahahahaha!

Daan pa lagi ko ba, unta gidukol nalang gyud sa akong amigo!

^^ grabeh ang asenso? sa mga paktorya og mga planta! ilaha na na! um-uma ang mga abog! basta atoa ang mga condominium..which reminds me...naa ba silay mga condo didto? or never heard pa sila ana? :D

Kuya Jech, it has been more than five years since that article was written. So what did the writer prove? Oh, I think he was only able to prove one thing.... that he is an INCOMPETENT writer, because wala natinood iyang gisulat!

^^ i like to read it again can someone repost it ? maybe they edited it to 2010 :D

I like this! God! My tears are falling out of sheer laughter!

Bwahahahahahaha! Sus unsa kaha kung ako tong nakadungog no? Maayo nalang buotan tong akong amigo. Or should I say, maayo nalang kay dili SSC forumer ang akong amigo!

ilan na ba overpassed nila :jk: :D

ay salamat yung Banke bridge sinisimulaan na , para di na tayo ma critisize :)

News cut out ra ang naa nako kuya dinabaw...at that time, d pa kaau kusog ang internet - 2001. :D kung naa man, murag wala pa pud SSC at that time...Goldstar Daily...thats the name of the newspaper to be exact.

Ngek...Kung stagnant ang development sa davao siguro...:lol::lol:

Pwede ba yun??? :ohno:

Notice the use of the word OVERPASS? It is an acknowledgment that Davao has been the benchmark all along. Idol diay nila ang Davao. Only, there was no "overpassing" that took place at all. It has been seven years since the article was supposedly written.

^^ bitaw sa una i tot they will overpassed kasi in the 80's stagnant dyud ang Davao but wa man nahitabo.

Idol man jud ta nila...ever noticed how copycats they have been for several years now? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr mosurok akong dugo nila! pero kung mga gwapo gani na taga didto ok ra...madala dala ra.

Ayus!

My Opinion: What Peng Hok overheard was merely a conversation from visitors/tourists. There is absolutely no need to exaggerate their opinions. You are putting malice to their statements. And some of you here are immaturely joking about kicking these visitors out of your city the next time you overhear such reactions. Why? Do their statements hurt you? Did they do anything of harm to you? The answer to these questions is No. Again it is their opinion. You have your own opinion too. And it is up to you if you would put value to their opinions or not. And speaking of facts, you know what is true and what is not. You may see the need to correct these errors, but you also have a choice if you want to be formal or cheap. The way I see it here, you chose to be cheap resorting to blind items and laughing at the other's negative sides which is not part of the issue at all. This whole matter reminds me of the cheap network war we have on Philippine Television.

Case Closed. Final Warning.

Davao City is a modern metropolis bustling with life, verve and color, situated in a typhoon-free zone with a land area of 244,000 hectares touted as one of the world’s largest.

From its fertile mountain ranges and valleys, down to the rich blue waters of the gulf, Davao City is abundant with natural wealth and wonders. Its potable water is considered second cleanest water in the world according to the World Health Organization.

This city is a progressive hub of commerce, education, tourism, arts, culture and wellness in Southern Philippines.

The dynamic and able support from the local government and harmonious synergy of a multi-cultural and multi-lingual peoples from different indigenous tribes, Muslim communities, migrant settlers and a large expatriate community make this cosmopolitan city conducive for business, investment and tourism.

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/thumb_1.jpg

Davao City is home to a number of national pride such as Mt. Apo, the country’s highest peak, Waling-waling, the “Queen of Orchids”, Philippine Eagle, national bird and the world’s largest, and Durian, the “King of Fruits”, and the country’s premier celebration, Kadayawan sa Dabaw, the “Festival of Festivals.”

As a major tourism destination in the region, Davao City takes pride in having world class hotels and resorts, convention and business facilities, exciting shopping malls, sumptuous local cuisine, engaging itineraries for tours and a diverse assortment of night activities.

Everything is bigger, brighter and better in Davao City. It has the idyllic charm of a small town, the sophisticated comforts of a modern metropolis, the best of both worlds - a destination that does not only promise leisure, escapades or profitable ventures but most importantly, a warm feeling of being home.

The word "Davao" is a mixture of words from several native groups.

Davao’s rich heritage in arts, culture and history come from its indigenous tribes, among the more predominant are Bagobo, Mandaya, Mansaka, Manobo, Ata and B’laan.

According to historians, the word Davao is a result of the phonetic blending of words from three Bagobo sub-groups, meaning “beyond the higher grounds” or “over the hills yonder”, a reference to the location of Davao River, a trading settlement. When different tribes went to the area, they would say that they were going to davoh (Obo group, considered the earliest tribe to settle in the area), duhwow (Clatta group) or dabu (Tagabawa group) as the place was surrounded by the hills of Buhangin, Magtuod, Maa, and Matina.

Led by Alvaro de Saavedra, the Spaniards - the first non-natives to visit Davao - arrived in the region in 1528. After the Spanish troops slayed Moro leader Datu Bago in 1847, a local hero who protected Davao from foreign invaders, Don Jose Oyanguren became the first governor of the undivided Davao province and he renamed the place Guipuzcoa.

Way before World War ll, Davaoneos had amicable relations with Japanese. In 1900, a group of Japanese established extensive plantations of abaca around the gulf area and was engaged in logging, fishing and trading. The increase of Japanese residents earned Davao the title Japan kuo or “Little Japan.”

Davao finally became a city in October 16, 1936 when President Manuel Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 51, also known as the Charter of the City of Davao.

Rich natural resources, a rich history and a surging economy makes Davao an ideal place to live in.

One of the 20 Most Livable Cities in Asia. In the annual survey made by Asiaweek magazine on the 40 Best Cities in Asia, Davao City made it to the Top 20 for four consecutive years (1996-1999). Davao City earned high points when it comes to matters of peace and order, reasonable standard of living, cleanliness and welfare of its residents.

Top 25 Best Practices in the Philippines - Project 911. Davao City is one of only three areas in world, after US and Canada, to have the Integrated Emergency Response System 911, a fully integrated, computerized response system linking the people of Davao City to the emergency resources of the government. Davao City received an award for its Project 911 from the League of Cities in the Philippines in 2003, as one of the Top 25 Best Practices in the Philippines.

1st Place in 2004 Cleanest and Greenest Highly-Urbanized City in the Philippines, and 2nd Place in 2001 to 2003. Davao City received an award of excellence from the Office of the President as 1st Runner-up in the Cleanest and Greenest Highly-Urbanized City in the Philippines - Gawad Pangulo sa Kapaligiran Awards 2004, and the 2nd Runner-up for three consecutive years in 2001–2003.

"Clean and green" is the norm in Davao.

Cleanest and Greenest City in 1999. Davao City was awarded the Cleanest and Greenest City in 1999 for its Clean and Green Program that focuses on environmental rehabilitation, protection and conservation, intensification of solid waste management program, pollution control, re-greening of the urban areas, forest and watershed management, and beautification.

Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines. Davao City won in the first-ever selection of the Most Child-Friendly City in the Philippines in 1998 and 1999. Davao City earned nods for its initiative to pass a landmark legislation - the Davao City Children’s Welfare Code of 1994, the first of its kind the entire country, which is geared towards addressing the rights, services and protection of children, upholding their welfare and interests in high regard.

You guys are aware that you discussed a sensitive issue. You guys are aware that you were discouraged to discuss such issue and that SSC is not the right place for such issue. You guys are aware of your actions and that you are liable of them. You guys are aware that you signed up to this forum agreeing to all the rules and conditions of this forum. So that's it. sinjin, if your family is really serious about visiting davao, there's no need of hard selling. with so much going with the city, that in itself are the points on why you should revisit davao. unlike others (there's no cvc here), davao offers islands to highlands adventure. i would give your folks enough time, and they would decide on it without hard selling.

try feeding the davao eagle withouth the gloves and the protective jacket... hmmm that will make your visit surely a memorable one

seriously, the best way to experience davao is not to come there as a tourist... i actually cancelled the pearl farm and all those pompous tourist attractions in my list when i was there late last year and beg. this year...... instead, i "invested" more on meeting the (don) juans and the simple pedros of the city.... the SSC-davao EB was a (big) opportunity. you'll get to experience the place more if you socialize with the local folks, they are the ones who could show you what davao really is!

‘07 investments in Dvo. Region: P9.18 billion
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2008-02-08
Mindanao Times

ABOUT P9.18 billion in new investments were registered last year, or about 44 percent higher compared with the P6.36 billion figure registered in 2006, the investment arm of the government reported.

Based on the press statement released by the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry, these new investments resulted in 46,416 jobs during the period, or 18 percent higher than the jobs generated in 2006.

Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz also said that 2007 investment figure was about 56 percent higher than the 2007 investment target.

Cruz said the figures showed that the region “was enjoying a robust economy.”

“With the efforts of various agencies and associations, we were able to conduct and implement a number of projects and initiatives last year. These initiatives have helped us a lot in surpassing our performance in the previous year,” she said in a statement.

Lawyer Domingo Duerme, former president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, agreed with Ms. Cruz. “Our economic growth last year was evident,” he said earlier this year, adding that there were new investments in the city last year.

Based on the data of the Board of Investments in the city, there were 10 companies registered with the agencies and that these were into banana chips production, coconut fiber and peat, known down pallets, hydroelectric power plant, recycling, information and communications technology, and cold storage facility.

Gil Dureza, head of the agency, said the biggest investment registered last year was that of the Hedcor Tamugan Inc., a hydroelectric power corporation which is part of the Aboitiz Power Corp.

Dureza said based on the record, the company would invest P3.68 million for its project in Tamugan, one of the three power plants being built by the Aboitiz company in the city. The others are to be built in Panigan and Suawan.

Under the plan, the three power plants will be supplying to another Aboitiz company, the Davao Light and Power Co., its generated power as the three plants will have a combined capacity of 30.5 megawatts.

The Aboitiz power company has also started setting up another hydropower plant in the nearby Sibulan, Santa Cruz, Davao del Sur where it would spend P5 billion as the plant would produce 42.5 megawatts.

The South Korean companies have also invested in the city, added Dureza, adding that Yoo Chang was to invest P4 million for its coconut fiber production. Another company, the Woo Hoo Philippines, will spend about the same amount for its wood processing plant, he added. (Carmelito Q. Francisco)

RPOC leadership not discussed with GMA
By Carlo P. Mallo

THERE was no discussion as to who President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will appoint as the next Regional Peace and Order Committee (RPOC) chair for Southern Mindanao after Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte resigned from the post.

"It was not talked about," National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales said in an interview with Sun.Star Davao last Friday.

There were speculations that Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario will be appointed by Arroyo as the new RPOC chair but none of the four governors of Southern Mindanao present during the President's visit was appointed.

Davao del Sur Governor Douglas Ra. Cagas, Compostela Valley Governor Arthur "Chiongkee" Uy, Davao Oriental Governor Corazon Malanyaon, and Davao del Norte Governor del Rosario were by the President's side as she toured the province inaugurating the various infrastructure projects last Friday.

"I think it has to be resolved internally," Gonzales said.

Duterte resigned from his post as RPOC chair early this year as his name was dragged into the murder of broadcaster Fernando "Batman" Lintuan late last year.

Duterte was RPOC chair for the past 12 years.

Police Regional Office-Southern Mindanao director, Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, is the current OIC chair, until a new one is appointed by the President. (CPM)

Mati LGU vows to be vigilant vs. mining abuses
By Ben O. Tesiorna

WITH their mining industry in boom, officials of the City of Mati vowed to be vigilant in ensuring that mining companies comply with their policy for a sustainable and environment-friendly mining activity.

Mati Councilor Allan Andrada, chair of the committee on environment resources, said they are closely monitoring the operation of big and small-scale mining companies.

Reports reaching Sun.Star Davao showed that one of the biggest mining companies in the world, BHP Bilitton, has a bad record in some of its operations in other countries.

Andrada said though they still have not received reports of BHP Bilitton's bad record, they will nevertheless be closely watching the company's operation in the area.

Andrada said they will invite officials of BHP Bilitton to their inquiry soon so that the company could shed light on some issues regarding their operation.

It was learned that BHP Bilitton is also locked in a legal battle against their local counterpart, Amcor.

Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat said the City Government does not intend to meddle in this.

Aside from Bilitton, two other big mining corporations have also expressed their interest in the Davao Oriental operation. These two companies are now applying for a Mineral Production Sharing Agreement (MPSA) with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Seven small-scale mining companies have also applied permits for their operation within the province. (BOT)

Billboard owners admit 'illegals' proliferate
By Ben O. Tesiorna

AN ORGANIZATION of Davao-based billboard companies admitted that "illegal billboard operators" are proliferating in the city and that they have not done anything to put an end to this.

Illegal operators are those who set up billboards without the proper permits and fees from the City Government.

Davao Outdoor Advertising Association (DOAA) President Chris Arieta said the illegal operators are those who are based outside Davao and are not registered with the local billboard operators' organization, thus has no license to operate here in the city.

Arieta said they have long informed the City Council about the proliferation of illegal billboard operators years back. He admitted that their organization has overlooked the issue on illegal operators.

Most of these illegal operators put up huge billboard structures in the city then left them to rot, Arieta said.

He said these illegal operators are not considered 'fly-by-night' operators, as they are mostly big billboard companies who operate in major cities.

For this, Arieta said, the local billboard operators are the ones receiving the flak from the city government especially with the declaration of Vice Mayor Sara Duterte not to issue new permits for billboard structures due to the danger it poses to the residents living nearby.

According to Arieta, they have already sent a letter to the vice mayor requesting for an audience for them to explain their side of the issue.

No meeting has yet materialized.

In an interview last Saturday, DOAA also denied staging a black propaganda campaign against Vice Mayor Duterte for her policy against issuing new permits for billboard structures in the city. (BOT)

Mati officials hit League of Cities
By Ben O. Tesiorna

"SWAPANG" (greedy) was how City of Mati Vice Mayor Cesar de Erio described the efforts of the League of Cities of the Philippines (LCP) to block the cityhood of some towns for reasons that their Internal Revenue Allotment would dramatically reduce.

In a press conference before the opening of the Davao Regional Athletics Association in Mati City Sunday, de Erio reminded the component cities that they once started as municipalities.

"Talagang swapang lang ang ibang cities. Saan ba sila nagsimula? 'Di ba town din sila dati?" de Erio blurted.

Mayor Michelle Rabat supported her vice mayor's statement saying they have as much right to be a city as the rest.

"I am sorry kung nabawasan ang kanilang IRA (if your IRA has lessened), but let us not be selfish. If you are blessed, you share it. The more you share, the more you will be blessed," Rabat said.

The mayor said Mati was founded in 1903, even earlier than Davao City and the other cities in the region, thus it's high time that they become city. She said with Mati becoming a city, other cities and towns in the region would also profit from it.

"Other cities will now be less populated since instead of going to their cities, the people now have the option to go to Mati City. If we want development in the region it's right that we have a city here to spread the wealth," Rabat said.

De Erio meantime called on other cities not to be dependent on the IRA coming from the national government since they could source their income from other sources like local taxation.

The vice mayor expressed his dismay on the LCP members saying if newly-created cities are not welcome to the LCP, then they can well create their own organization.

De Erio revealed that of the new cities, Mati is one of the few who passed all of the requirements for a town to become a city.

"Masama talaga ang loob namin sa LCP dahil nadadamay na lang kami sa pulitika nila eh, (We really feel bad with LCP since we got affected with their politicking)," he said.

With the new status as city, Mati's IRA share has tripled from about P110 million to more than P300 million a year. Rabat said they expect to be able to generate their own revenues enough to run the city without relaying on IRA in five years. (BOT)

Maxey: Balancing acts
By Ram Maxey
Bar None

WHEN the House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly last week (174 "Yes" to 35 "No"; 16 abstentions) to declare the position of Speaker Jose de Venecia vacant and subsequently chose Davao City Representative Prospero Nograles to replace him, it also caused a change in the leadership of the Congressional Spouses Foundation Inc. (CSFI).

Erstwhile CSFI head Mrs. Gina de Venecia has given way to the wife of Speaker Nograles -- former psychology teacher Rhodora Bendigo-Nograles -- who was supposed to preside for the first time in a meeting of the CSFI. The two political families have been very close to each other, and to President Macapagal-Arroyo for that matter, through thick and thin as it were.

In a recent frontpage photo of a Manila-based newspaper, Rhodora was seen smiling broadly as she watched her husband taking his oath as Speaker. She looked ecstatic. But of course, her husband had just been elevated to the fourth highest position in the land at the expense of dearest friend Joe who hasn't gotten over his hurt.

If by some quirk of fate the President, Vice President and Senate President were to die or become incapacitated tomorrow, a Dabawenyo -- Speaker Prospero "Boy" Nograles -- would become the country's first president from Mindanao. And Rhodora Bendigo-Nograles would be the First Lady.

Perish the thought. It won't happen. That extreme scenario was for those of our countrymen who are not aware of the law on succession. That's all.

What makes one wonder is how the older members of the CSFI who have been loyal to the De Venecias all these years that Joe was in power would feel about their Gina being replaced by someone from Mindanao. It would be easier for Speaker Nograles to bring normalcy back in the House than it would be for Rhodora to do the same in the CSFI. It won't be easy. Some women can be so catty and spiteful, especially if they happen to be wives of men wielding political and economic power.

Definitely, Mrs. Nograles will have to be at her diplomatic best to deal with members of the CSFI in a most sensitive and effective way in order to nurture and maintain good relations with them, especially after what happened during last week's Hyper Monday/Tuesday. Many members are still hurting from that episode.

While her husband is doing a balancing act at the House, Rhodora will have to do the same, even more, in the Congressional Spouses Foundation Incorporated. It can be ticklish. Just watch.

Canada lifts travel advisory on Davao

CANADIAN citizens can now feel free to travel to Davao City and the rest of the Davao Region.

Lawyer Domingo Duerme, top executive of the Philippine Airlines and immediate past president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated, said the government of Canada has lifted the travel advisory on Davao.

The lifting of the travel advisory was confirmed by no less than Ambassador Robert Desjardins of the Canadian Embassy in the Philippines during a brief remarks wherein he congratulated the 2008 officers of the DCCCII headed by Simeon Marfori II during their induction at the Davao Convention Center last January 31.

In that talk, Desjardins also vowed to come to Mindanao as often if not more often than the former Canadian ambassador. Canada has many projects in Mindanao. (GLP)

Arroyo cites BPO gains
But stresses need for HR, infra spending

MANILA, Philippines -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has cited the country's gains in the global outsourcing market but likewise stressed the need to invest in training and developing more investment areas.

In her keynote speech at the eServices conference, Arroyo cited several third-party industry assessments that rank the Philippines alongside India as among the top destinations for offshore outsourcing.

In particular, she noted that aside from Metro Manila, other cities like Cebu, Davao and Quezon City were likewise getting recognition globally.

The theme of this year's e-Services conference revolves around outsourcing "centers of excellence," with guest speakers from India and other countries.

"The information revolution has been good to the Philippines," President Arroyo said in her speech. "We are very proud but we are also anxious to solidify our gains."

According to the Business Process Association of the Philippines (BPA/P), the outsourcing industry posted total revenues of nearly $4.9 billion in 2007. The industry aims to achieve total revenues of $13 billion by 2011.

To achieve further growth, Arroyo cited the need to invest in human resource training and infrastructure. She pointed to the recently announced P350-million training fund from the government to benefit some 40,000 new industry recruits, especially in areas outside Metro Manila.

She also mentioned P200 billion for infrastructure that is part of a two trillion-peso government-private sector collaboration under her administration's Medium Term Development Plan.

Overall, she noted that the country's economy has matured and remains confident of continued progress despite outside developments like the slowdown in the US economy.

I have to say that most of the tourists visiting Davao are those who are well traveled, experienced, and smart ones. :D Neophytes would go to the conventional destinations in our country, but those who tasted and savored most of the destinations opt to visit Davao again and again for reasons that cannot be posted in a magazine, by a pr writer, or travel exhibits. :D For instance, one of Davao's best seller is cultural tourism - noone can best describe that until a traveler experience it first hand. Another best seller is it's very laid back atmosphere in a cosmo setting, one has to savor it! Thus, MtApoStandard is right.....tourists are not pushed to visit Davao....to those who have truly visited the place, they are the ones coming back.

RLC putting up 6 more malls in 2008
By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson

First Posted 23:44:00 02/10/2008

ROBINSONS LAND CORP., the real-estate unit of the Gokongwei Group, is adding at least six more malls to its existing list this year, company president Frederick Go said.

Go said RLC's mall expansion formed part of the company's planned P10-capital expenditure program for 2008.

The amount was higher than the P7 billion to P8 billion spent by the company last year.

The new malls are being put up in Pulilan, Bulacan; Tacloban, Leyte; Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija; Davao City; Cebu; and Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.

RLC recently completed the foundation of its three-level shopping mall in Dumaguete City, which is scheduled for completion in mid-next year, the company said in a recent disclosure.

The Dumaguete mall , which will be RLC's fourth mall in the Visayas, will include an 80-room hotel and 3,000-square meter trade hall.

RLC's first three shopping malls in the Visayas are in Bacolod, Iloilo and Cebu.

Go also said RLC would also build this year a hotel in Tagaytay, across Josephine's restaurant. The hotel will be named Summit Ridge and is scheduled for completion next year.

In earlier documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, RLC said the proposed hotel in Tagaytay would have 54 hotel rooms, 36 serviced apartments, five luxury villas and conference facilities.

RLC is a major player in the property market and boasts of a growing portfolio now composed of 20 shopping centers, 23 residential condominiums, five office buildings, 27 housing and land developments, and three hotels.

It already is....Based on the ICT developments and current IT companies in the island, what else can take the role as the silicon valley of the island? Davao. Davao is making it's own name as the Silicon Gulf of the island :okay:

With the term "hi tech industry parks", what is your definition of a "hitech" industry park? :okay: I'm not sure if we have the same definition of "hi tech industry parks" but we have whatever IT facilities that our counterparts in other locations have. For example, while Metro Manila has Eastwood City as one of their IT parks and Cebu has Asiatown IT Park, Davao has Damosa IT Park. While Metro Manila has MJ Plaza, Philamlife Tower, Robinsons Summit Center, etc as their IT Buildings, and Cebu has Keppel, Cebu Commercial Tower, and Innove as some of its IT Buildings, Davao has Pryce Tower and Landco Corporate Tower as highrise infrastructures that cater to IT and ITes firms. :okay:

IMO, Sharper minds are not going to Metro Manila because of the "hitech industry parks" issue. Most of my batchmates who were graduates of Computer Science are jan sa Davao as freelance programmers, technopreneurs, and some are connected with the local IT and ITes firms. But I have to agree if the reason why some opt to work here in Metro Manila is due to a higher salary range. :okay: It's not because there's no so called "parks"... coz we have the facilities - some are well celebrated while others discreetly exist within the city. I have to say that it's a personal preference of some of our kababayans why they chose to work here in Metro Manila. :okay:

tj_brewed
February 11th, 2008, 06:19 AM
And for me, even our small technopreneurs have an edge compared to other small businesses in Southern Philippines. This is because we are the only city that houses an IT Incubation Center where start up businesses can get technical and financial support from the private sector and local government. :okay:

Housing committee, most prolific: report
By Rizalene P. Acac

THE COMMITTEE on housing, urban, and rural developments remains to be most prolific, with the most number of legislations passed for the first six months of the 15th council, the Sangguniang Panlungsod semi-annual report bared.

The committee still headed by Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling passed 39 resolutions and six ordinances from July to December 2007.

Among the landmark legislations pushed by the committee is the Comprehensive Urban Shelter and Services Development Code of Davao City enacted last August 21, 2007. It is a blueprint of solving the problem of the worsening state of informal settlements in the city.

Other legislations include the reclassifications of lands and exemptions from the amended zoning ordinance, preliminary approval and locational clearances and development permits.

In the same period in 2006, the committee passed 60 resolutions and seven ordinances. From July to December 2005, the committee passed 57 resolutions and 18 ordinances. The committee was then chaired by Councilor Victorio Advincula and was handed over to former Councilor Emmanuel Galicia after the council revamp.

The second top performing committee in terms of the number of legislations passed is the committee on rules, privileges, laws, and ordinances under Councilor Bonifacio Militar, also the current floor leader. The committee passed 18 resolutions and 14 ordinances.

This is however a drop from the 47 resolutions and seven ordinances passed from July to December 2006. The committee was then chaired by Galicia.

The committee on rules is automatically chaired by the floorleader as stipulated by the council’s house rules.

The third spot is shared by the committee on cooperative development of Councilor Louie John Bonguyan, and the committee on finance, ways, and means of Councilor Myrna L’Dalodo.

Bonguyan’s committee passed 11 resolutions while Dalodo passed eight resolutions and three ordinances.

While there are performers in the council, a number of committees failed to pass even a single legislation from July to December 2007.

These are the committee on appointments and government reorganization of Councilor Peter Laviña; committee on civil, political, and human rights of Councilor Karlo Bello; committee on cultural communities and Muslim affairs of Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling; committee on education, science and technology, arts and culture of Councilor Maria Belen Acosta; committee on ethics and good government of Councilor Diosdado Mahipus; committee on games and amusements of Councilor Dante Apostol; committee on information technology of Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon; committee on labor and employment opportunities of Councilor Edgar Ibuyan; committee on public works and highways of Councilor Wilberto Al-ag; committee on trade, commerce, and industry, also by Laviña; committee on publication of city ordinances of Councilor Nilo Abellera; and committee on government-owned real properties of Advincula.

Some committees, however, passed legislations under the suspended rules which are not counted under the regular resolutions or ordinances.

The council presently has 29 committees.

Im really sorry kuya dinabaw but im really confused with the term "hitech industrial parks". Is there a such. And with what you have replied through the post above, it seems like you're describing an education zone. Is that what he referred to as "hitech industrial park"? :dunno:

Coz for me there's a huge difference between an industrial park and an IT Park. If our concern is to make Davao as home of IT companies and ITes, then we do not need an industrial park. In Visayas and Mindanao areas, industrial parks include MEPZA or Macta Export Processing Zone Area, West Cebu Industrial Park - for shipbuilding, Cebu Light Industrial Park in Mactan, First Oriental Business and Industrial Park in Davao and the like.

But if the concern is to build R&Ds and a place where IT and ITes converge, we already have that. It may not be as big as Asiatown IT Park or as towering as the structures in EastWood City or Cybergate. But we have such facilities that offer speed, security, and connectivity to our IT businesses. In IT, these matter most. Is this what you meant by "hitech industrial park"? :dunno:

I see....Anyway, IMO we dont need to relocate all institutions in one location. Coz if we are going to do that then we need to allocate more budget for that :D But I propose ( ah feeling konsehal ko noh? bwahahahahahahha) to add more IT electives and subjects in our curriculums that would further strengthen the capabilities of our IT graduates. I think our very own Jason Banico had started a year ago through incorporating Technopreneurship in our local curriculums.

The establishment of PhilNits in Davao is a big boost! We should offer more bridge programs to our IT studes and grads. And we should focus more on technopreneurship.

Robinsons
February 11, 2008 — Peter

Robinsons is finally entering the Davao market. The building of its mall here was announced by Frederick Go, president of Robinsons Land Corp.

Long rumored after its landbanking in Davao, the Gokongwei group will be the third major mall developer to venture here after Henry Sy set up SM City Davao almost a decade ago. Ayala Land earlier entered into partnership with the Floriendo’s for the development of the latter’s 10 has. property infront of Redemptorist Church.

The R Mall would be located also at Bajada near the Water District. JP Laurel would thus become truly the mall street of the city with Gaisano Mall, Victoria Plaza, Ayala, Robinsons and Gateway dotting the stretch from the Chinese School to Lanang.

NCCC Mall has a monopoly on the other side of the city’s MacArthur Highway.

The mall project is preceded by three major Robinsons housing projects here. The first at Diversion Road Buhangin, the second infront of Lanang Golf & Country Club, and the third, recently approved by the City Council, is also along the Buhangin Diversion Road.

Property development remains as the top investment priority area in the city under the Investment Incentive Code. Its of no wonder, however, because property projects really make a killing.

Incidentally, the Gokongweis have good local partners in Davao in the Ed Bangayan group who are its Cebu Pacific General Agent and also part owners of Victoria Plaza and SM Davao Department Store.

Davao Drag Racer wins 1st leg at BRC
Published : 2008-02-08

Lady driver WhenWhen Dagondon of Vannitec/W-Autosports created a big impact as “Fastest Woman of Philippine Drag Racing” when she captured the Pro title by clocking 12.440 seconds at the kickoff of the 2008 San Mig Coffee Drag Racing Championship Series recently at the Batangas Racing Circuit.

Dagondon was just one of the three women in the field of 93 drivers who joined this event sponsored by San Mig Coffee and supported by San Miguel Corporation, Pilipinas Shell, Casino Filipino, Denso, Eibach Spring and Spotlight TV.

The competition is an eight-leg series sanctioned by the Automobile Association of the Philippines.

The other two women were Jennette Go of Team Ere and Anatalia Almario of Team Ready. When When, a credit and audit manager of their family business beat Team Ere’s Anthony Go clocked 12.863 seconds and teammate Edward Pujol in the semifinals with a 12.723 who settled with 3rd place.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Tiu of Team Ere opened the season with a record breaking performance of 10.083 seconds to shatter the previous best of 10.24 ticks to claim the Quick 8 crown beating Miko Vinirao of Blanche Racing who clocked 11.419 in a Honda CRX with Pujol finishing third place in 11.794 seconds.

While she admits drag racing proves to be an effective stress reliever, WhenWhen disclosed her involvement in motorsport is more of an advocacy than just a hobby.

“My parents allowed me to join this event on the condition that I will keep off illegal races. That means, I’m not supposed to join, watch or even place a bet on illegal drag races,” Dagondon said.

“That’s the advocacy I want to promote. Save lives by saying no to illegal drag races. Likewise I want to encourage more women into safe racing and prove that we can also excel in this male dominated sport,” she added.

Holding a PDRF record of 11.4 seconds in Cebu, she looks forward to a bigger career milestone this season.

“Winning the season opener is a big accomplishment but my real target this year is to establish the fastest single cam turbo record recognized by the AAP. Right now, we’re setting up a lighter car with an excellent engine set-up to achieve that target in one of the legs at the new Clark racetrack,” she added.

Building for the city (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW012308/content.php?id=005)
Roy C. Rivera
Managing Director
RD Realty Development Corporation

http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x287/GearX_2007/another/another%202/rivera.gif

Like other successful businesses in the country, RD Realty and Development Corporation originated from the humble efforts of a family. Rodrigo and Dolores Rivera built several businesses which they eventually passed on to their children.

Among the smaller companies was RD Realty which has now grown into one of the biggest and most influential developers in General Santos City. The small family firm’s transformation into a thriving real estate corporation is credited to the leadership of Roy C. Rivera — the youngest Rivera child.

Mr. Rivera graduated with a diploma in Business Management in Kwantlen College in British Columbia, Canada. He chose to major in Entrepreneurial Leadership because he thought that "traditional courses" like Economics lacked excitement. After graduating, he returned home to General Santos City to be part of the family business. Mr. Rivera found himself preferring the real estate and construction field. He joined RD Realty Development Corporation in 2004.

While he was attracted to the industry, Mr. Rivera did not know much about the real estate business, save some minor aspects that he was exposed to when he was growing up. This prompted him to seek the guidance of Francis Monera, CFO of Resibo Holdings. Their small talks about real estate development gave Mr. Rivera the information to start with, but the rest of the way he only had his persistence and his entrepreneurial spirit to lead him.

The small realty business was fertile ground for Mr. Rivera to develop his entrepreneurial senses. At that time, the company, although 22 years old, was only in charge of managing four hotels but had no real estate developments to speak of. Mr. Rivera felt that the company had potential for larger scale developments and envisioned world-class projects to benefit the people of General Santos City.

Mr. Rivera zoomed in on one of the city’s most pressing needs — the demand for homes for the families of professionals and workers of the ever-growing city. Many investors and companies were recognizing the thriving General Santos economy that created more jobs. Progress was inevitable and the fact that General Santos City was beginning to flourish influenced Mr. Rivera to build the La Cassandra Subdivision — a mass low-cost subdivision with high-end amenities and homes.

The La Cassandra development was a rousing success in General Santos where the market was only exposed to substandard choices. "The players (real estate developers) here, before we came in, they were just providing low-cost services. When you say low-cost, you mean that houses don’t have walls, no partitions. People before didn’t have a choice in the market."

Only in its second year, the La Cassandra Subdivision is now fully occupied. The residents all conform to a set of rules that make living in the subdivision more peaceful and serene. There are also plans to build a second phase because of the high demand. La Cassandra has become the city’s benchmark for quality subdivision living.

Mr. Rivera has been inspired by La Cassandra’s success to dream of bigger projects. RD Realty envisions General Santos’ prime central business district, a 106-hectare development in Apopong, General Santos — Richmond City. This "city-within-a-city" will be another milestone for General Santos. Richmond City is planned to feature well-lit roads, picturesque landscaping, and round-the-clock security. It is a city that Mr. Rivera hopes will remind visitors, investors, and prospective lessors of first-world CBDs, like Singapore.

Under Mr. Rivera’s management, RD Realty has expanded its reach and now owns the Dolores Farm Resort, the Anchor Driving Range, and RD Plaza, a convenience mall. The subsidiaries of RD Realty Development Corporation include Richmond Land Innovations, Inc., which handled the development of La Cassandra, RD Pilipinas Construction, RD Hardware & Fishing Supplies, Inc., and Richmond Builders Limited, a construction business based in Papua New Guinea. Business in RD Realty Development Corporation has certainly picked up.

Mr. Rivera attributes the company’s dynamic performance to his team. Seasoned industry old-timers work side-by-side with the out-of-the-box imagination and enthusiasm of young blood. This way, the company maintains the balance that it needs in order to produce results. More importantly, the team keeps in mind a much bigger picture — RD Realty’s success also means success for General Santos. Better developments could mean more investors that would lead the city to progress.

But being an entrepreneur, Mr. Rivera does not limit himself to any one business. He also devotes his time to Progen Seafood as their managing director for their frozen products division. When Mr. Rivera first came into the company, he needed a new business model for the division as sales were declining. He decided to focus on frozen seafood as no single company was dominating that sector. Progen Seafood frozen products are now sold in supermarkets around the country.

Mr. Rivera comes from a family of entrepreneurs and he could have easily rested on their laurels, but he chose to make a name for himself by transforming a small company and innovating it to produce rewarding results. He not only has the business in his head but more commendable is that he has the progress of his city in his heart.

Agro-Industrial Estate in Davao in peril
February 10, 2008 -

City Hall admits errors
in 1996 Zoning Code
By ROGER M. BALANZA

The Davao City government admitted it rezoned the southern part of the city in 1996 on a knee-jerk reaction to speculations about a housing boom to be triggered by the multi-million investments San Miguel brewery would pour in nearby Sta. Cruz town in Davao del Sur.
As a fall-out of such speculations, a large part of Barangay Sirawan, the last Davao City barangay towards Davao del Sur, was reclassified from agricultural to residential in the 1996 Amended Zoning Code of Davao City, bringing a large headache to existing hog and poultry farms in the area.
Luisa Tuquib, city zoning officer, told a Davao City Council committee hearing recently that the expectations about a housing boom turned out to be a pitiful dud, as San Miguel came with a fully-automated beer production plant. “We thought we would make a hit from the housing needs of San Miguel employees, and Sirawan was the nearest to Sta. Cruz,” said Tuquib.

Red-faced

A red-faced Tuquib made the admission about city planners hatching a vital decision based on soft and speculative grounds, during a committee hearing on an application by hog and poultry growers in Sirawan to reclassify anew their property to agricultural.
About three dozen big and large hog and poultry growers occupying more than 200 hectares under the umbrella of the DIAF Integrated Farmers Association has lodged their application with the Committee on Housing chaired by councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling.
The Cabling committee is set to conduct an ocular inspection on the site, where the growers had poured in large investments since the 1960s in what was then part of the 600-hectare Adecor Agri-Industrial Estate.

Agro-Industrial Estate

DIAF president Alvin Teves said the growers are merely seeking a correction to the erroneous reclassification of their properties in the zoning code of 1996. The city government did not consult the Sirawan stakeholders prior to the approval of the code, said Teves.
DIAF members expressed worry about their status, as mass housing developments start to mushroom in the Sirawan area following the miss-classification in 1996.
It would be unfair for us who have been here since the 1960s to be dislocated by these newcomers, said Teves. Hog and poultry growers presently operate under a temporary permit in view of the residential classification, as “existing but non-forming” businesses.
Teves said DIAF has proposed conversion of the area into an Agri-Industrial Estate, a countrywide agricultural development program being promoted by the Philippine Export Zone Authority (PEZA). Davao City is one of few cities in Mindanao that has no agro-industrial estate, as other local governments establish estates in wake of expected massive trade with BIMP/EAGA partner countries.

No Smell

Pete Anino, DIAF vice president, said Sirawan is the answer to the city government’s search for a permanent home for the local hog and poultry industry, as it closes down those near downtown areas over complaints of obnoxious odor from neighbors.
Anino said DIAF members are now starting to establish giant biogas digesters in their farms as part of the groups’ collective efforts to protect the environment.

Faster, stronger, better Bankerohan bridge, DPWH vows
by R. Alama

Davao City (12 February) -- Using modern construction technology the construction of the new Bankerohan Bridge will be stonger, better and much faster.

According to Department of Public Works and Highways Undersecretary Rafael Yabut, the contractor would be utilizing bore-ping technology to build the bridge instead of the usual pile-driving method which involves piles being hammered or driven into the river bed.

"We would be using the Ogre machine, which would bore into the ground then would pour the materials. We estimate to save around 2/3 of our time as compared Pile-driving." Yabut said. http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080212.htm&no=12

Talaingod-Bukidnon Road to spur dev't, cut travel time
by JMD Abangan

KAPALONG, Davao del Norte (12 February) - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo last week led the ground-breaking ceremony commencing the P1.5 billion 58-kilometer road project expected to spur economic activities between the two provinces particularly along the areas it traverses.

Other than economic prospects, the Talaingod-Bukidnon Road improvement and concreting is considered as an important section of the Philippine-Japan Friendship Highway traversing Butuan City to Davao City and that of the Sayre Highway along Valencia City in Bukidnon going to Cagayan de Oro City.

Other infrastructure commitment of President Arroyo in Davao Region are the Davao-Surigao Coastal Road and the expansion of Sasa Wharf.

Part of the these are the 87 farm-to-market roads spread in the four provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, Davao del Sur and Compostela Valley in Region 11

More than 500 Botica ng Barangay are also set up in the region (most of which are in Davao del Norte and Compostela Valley) and 400 Tindahan Natin which sell rice and other basic commodities at much lower prices. (PIA XI) [top] http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080212.htm&no=10
