Only 11 pass Idol in Davao

DAVAO has the slimmest chance of capturing the first ever Pinoy Idol title.

Only a total of 11 aspiring singers got the gold ticket in the Davao leg of the Pinoy Idol audition.

To date, Davao has the least number of qualifiers in the on-going talent search for the upcoming Philippine franchise of the hit Idol series.

Some of the 11 passers are not actually residents of Davao. Some of those who took the audition came from the neighboring regions of Bukidnon, Cotabato, Surigao, Maguindanao and Zamboanga.

So far, the only known Davao residents in the list are Mary Lycel Millan, Juliet Bahala, Neil John Lubiano, Johnson Rey Oclarit, Germabel Lagat, Gemma Herradur and Ruffa Jehn Espada.

Millan and Bahala are both grand champions of the NCCC-initiated Star of Davao, while Lubiano, from Tagum City in Davao del Norte, was a grand finalist. Oclarit is a band vocalist of Baby in a Box and IV Play.Escanilla, originally from Sultan Kudarat, is studying in Davao City. Lagat is a student from Panabo City in Davao del Norte.

Herradura (not Hernandez as earlier reported) is working as pastry chef of Marco Polo. Espada (earlier reported as the unidentified 12th passer) is from Sultan Kudarat who currently studying in Davao City.

Millan and Oclarit were among those who also got the gold ticket in the first Philippine Idol.

From other areas are Maria Cresilda Retorta (from Bukidnon), Aimme Escanilla (from General Santos City), and Mark Louis Mabasa (from Angeles City).

The residence of the other qualifier named Marchie Domag was not immediately known.

So far, Cebu and the other Mindanao city of Cagayan de Oro have the most contestants going to Manila. Both have 24 gold ticket holders.

Iloilo followed with 23, while Batangas has 18.

SATISFIED

Despite the short list, judge Wyngard Tracy said he was "very satisfied" with the result in the Davao audition.

But he admitted that they actually expected to have a high number of passers in Davao.

"Inasahan namin na maraming may talent dito sa Davao," said Tracy, considered as the Philippine version of the acid-tongue American Idol judge Simon Cowell. But he said they found natural talents in some of the Davao passers.

Judge Ogie Alcasid butted in: "Maybe the talented singers here are already performing professionally... maybe some are already in Manila."

The judges' next stop is in Manila.

"Siguradong madugo ito," director Louie Ignacio said. He said they expect the most number of aspirants in the capital region.

Our very own Reancorbz had the chance to speak with Ricky Floirendo, the Senior Vice President of Damosa Land Inc. / Anflocor and had retrieved some updates regarding the upcoming mall and IT park project of Ayala Land and Anflocor in Davao City.

The ground breaking will be in June this year. The first phase will include the development of Ayala Land's first mall in Mindanao. Unlike the conventional malls, this will be patterned after Ayala Land's Bonifacio Highstreet in Global City Taguig. The Davao mall is envisioned to be a posh promenade with rows of upscale boutiques, bistros, cafes and restaurants. It is a one of a kind retail development project in the island of Mindanao that would truly bring Davaoenos shopping lifestyle to the next level. :okay: Below are some photos of Bonifacio Highstreet.

Official says Anflocor to intensify diversification
By Carmelito Q. Francisco

Last month, the company, through its subsidiary, the Anflo Management and Investment Corp., signed a partnership agreement with the Ayala Land Holdings Inc. for the development of a nine-hectare property into a mini-city.

The P2.3 billion commercial complex, said Ricardo Floirendo, younger brother of Mr. Floirendo and vice chair of the company for South Operations, will have a commercial center, and information technology park and even town houses.

Floirendo said the Ayala by the Ayala company which revealed that young professionals who are members of the middle class want a mall with a garden concept.

Based on this press release, as per Ricky Floirendo, the upcoming project will have:

- commercial center
- IT park
- townhouses

So, would this mean that if the plan would be pursued;

- commercial center will be patterned after Bonifacio Highstreet (first photo)
- townhouses might be similar to the Serendra located a stone throw away from the Highstreet (second and third photos)
- IT Park

what do you think guys?

I guess it's high time for the city government to spruce up the lighting fixtures in the whole stretch of Bajada and Lanang. It's should complement the development in the area and give it a more urban look.

I can't believe that corner of Maa and Div Road looks that polished now. I guess Phoenix can partly be given credit for that. I agree with your observation too. I hope, we Davaoenos will give our all out support to this homegrown business. :okay:

if you notice that pole kuya vic (left side), that's a traffic light. and would you believe just beside phoenix (not captured in that pic) is a commercial center. for me these are the future "crossings" of davao city, following the footsteps of crossing matina-pangi, matina-maa, damosa gateway, etc:

Zipped at Camp Sabros
By Jojie Alcantara

CAMP Sabros is found up in the cool highlands of Kapatagan in Digos City, Davao del Sur, an almost two-hour ride from Davao City.

Before the place became the buzzword nowadays, Rhonson used to hang out in the resthouse owned by the Sacdalans, when invited by his good friend Edwin Sacdalan who is also a mountaineer. The name Sabros is from a coined word meaning Sacdalan Brothers.

Now why a buzzword? Because it took around 5-6 months after Edwin envisioned a dream over their land and put up the longest zip line in the country.

On December 25, the Zip Line was launched and became a favorite attraction to a growing number of enthusiasts all over the island. Edwin did not expect the surge of visitors to the camp weekly since then.

Rhonson and I went up there one early rainy morning for an engagement shoot (or you may call it pre-nuptial) with our good friend Epong Soliban and fianc‚e Aya (a flight stewardess based in Korea).

It was so cold when we got there, because Kapatagan is on a 3,980 feet elevation. The fog has descended over the area. What started as a normal pictorial turned into an extreme prenuptial session similar to what he did at the top of Mount Apo.

Epong and Aya wanted to try the zip line. Rhon wanted to shoot them zipping off together at close range. So how was that possible? He had himself harnessed backwards to be able to shoot the couple in front.

The zip line was 380 meters long, affording a good view of Mount Apo's peak, and the rows of pine trees jutting out like toys from below at a height of 180ft. It was an unbelievable sight, and therapy for those with fear of heights, if they dare.

As the backup photographer (and feeling giddy at that moment), I had to climb the cable car, which positioned itself in the middle of the long cable, while I waited for Rhon and the couple to zip by from another end. I had to shoot them with my zoom lens in such a shaky situation.

When they finally flew by with their gleeful screams, the sight was like a fantasy movie out of Superman, without capes.

Not long after that, Rhon went flying again solo and not backwards this time. I followed next. The experience of flying alone for less than 60 seconds of pure, adrenalin-pumping, blood-racing flight over pine trees was beyond description.

It felt so good. And unlike other short zip lines, which make your heart stop because of its frightening speed, this zip line makes you SOAR. In such a cruising mode, you get the chance to admire the Mount Apo peak at close range.

I swear I was living in my Darna moment. There was no screaming, just openmouthed amazement at the panorama around me.

Edwin was his usual hospitable self and gave us a hefty breakfast. Though they are still considering putting up additional amenities like food, the package rate for now is P300 per head for the zip line.

Accommodations are still being prepared, as cottages will be added in the future. For now, he offers his own log cabins for guests who wish to stay overnight and brace themselves for a chilly evening.

In the mornings, though, the sight of Mount Apo on a clear sky will leave you breathless, more so when you view it from the cable car suspended midway in the forest. For inquiries and reservations, call Edwin at 09208750015. (email jojiealcantara@gmail.com or visit her website www.witerary.com)

Dr. Jack A. Estuart: Raising the dead
By Henrylito D. Tacio
Sunstar Davao

"TRUTH is more of a stranger than fiction," wrote American humorist Mark Twain. And this is what comes to mind when you read the story of Dr. Jack A. Estuart, a pediatrician and leader of a group of dynamic doctors who raised the dead Brokenshire Memorial Hospital from total oblivion.

After 77 years of dedicated service to people in Davao and other parts of Mindanao, the premier hospital closed down in 1985. And it was not until seven years later, that a conscious effort of the owners, the United Church of Christ of the Philippines, to reopen it was done.

It was a tall order. Former medical staff of the institution was hesitant to join. But Dr. Estuart, fresh from his training the previous year, accepted the invitation and served as a consultant in pediatrics.

Today, Dr. Estuart is the medical director of the hospital, who is responsible for the clinical departments, patient care activities, residency and post-graduate internship training and education programs, and medical staff professional participation. (The overall hospital operations are handled by its chief executive officer, Rev. Ruben dela Cruz.)

"At the time of its closure, the old Brokenshire Hospital was the leader in patient care, medical residency training, hospital facilities and nursing education," Dr. Estuart reveals. "And so when we reopened, we had to contend with that rich history and tradition."

They practically had to start from scratch. "We had a core group of young doctors who were just medical students when the old Brokenshire closed. There was not much response from the staff of the old hospital; only two former medical staff joined us in 1994. Many thought we were taking on an impossible task of rebuilding a hospital, greeted even with raised eyebrows."

It was in 1994 that Dr. Estuart was appointed chair of the Medical Executive Committee and was given the task to direct the medical affairs of the hospital. "We then built our clinical departments of Internal Medicine, Obstetrics-Gynecology, Surgery, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Anesthesia, Radiology and Pathology," Dr. Estuart says.

The core group were composed of the following physicians: Butch Valdez, Hansel Magno, Jr., Darleen Estuart, Jade Veloso, Jean Lindo, Dondon Albay, Kim Yuzon, Susan Gaspar, Lizette dela Victoria, Henry Chua, Manalo Ongchanco, and Julius dela Victoria.

Today, the hospital -- known as Brokenshire Integrated Health Ministries, Inc. -- is now a tertiary medical facility with 200 beds. "Still very much a mission hospital, we provide tertiary care services in the different specialties and subspecialties of medicine," Dr. Estuart informs. "Our active staff of nearly 100 physicians are competent in their fields.

We also have around 300 visiting medical consultants who send their patients to us."

The hospital also has acquired modern equipment to help the doctors provide the best care to their patients. "The Brokenshire came back from oblivion and is now to celebrate its 100 years," Dr. Estuart says. "In all humility, we can say we are very happy and feel privileged to be a part of it."

Indeed, the son of lawyer Conrado Estuart and the former Noemi Arcena he has gone a long, long way. His father was a civil servant who worked for the city government while his mother sold fish in Bankerohan Public Market. "They were my inspiration," he says.

"They worked hard to provide for my education all the way to medical school."
The young Jack spent his elementary and high school days at the Ateneo de Davao University. He also took his college education at the same university. "In the Ateneo, we were taught that the way to proceed is to be a person for others. If I can measure up to that, then I can consider myself successful," he says.

After graduating from college, he went to take his medical degree at the Davao Medical School Foundation, owned by a consortium that includes Brokenshire Hospital and the Ateneo de Davao, among others. "I am always happy to declare that I am a true hometown kid," he says with pride.

It was while attending the medical school in the early 1980's that Jack was exposed to and worked with some activist physicians who were not only very good clinicians and academicians but were also socially involved.

"I found myself immersed in community health and development programs and, sometimes, in direct political activities opposing the Marcos dictatorship in between my studies," he recalls. "Those were exciting times."

His mentors who greatly influenced him to be the doctor he is today were Dr. Dante Escalante ("a very competent internist and social activist, an epitome of the humane physician"), Dr. Jaime Galvez-Tan, and Dr. Manuel Dayrit. Both Drs. Galvez-Tan and Dayrit were his teachers in community medicine, "who not only taught us the science of public health but helped us realize and experience the social and political dimensions of health." (These two eventually became Secretaries of Health)

Dr. Estuart is married to former Darleen San Jose, an obstetrician-gynecologist. The couple has three children: Sara, 18; Andrea, 12; and Karl, 10. "She was my classmate in the Davao Medical School Foundation," he says of his beautiful wife. "She has always been with me and is a source of love, continuing support and encouragement."

Nogie’s priority: Railway system
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2008-02-15
FROM - www.mindanaotimes.com.ph

SPEAKER Prospero Nograles vowed to pursue the plan of establishing a Mindanao Railway System, a project that has long been talked about but never pushed through.

In a press conference yesterday at Nanay Bebeng Restaurant, Nograles said the clamor to build the project has escalated over the years as all the legislators of Mindanao have signed a resolution urging President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to support the project.

He said the President already has a copy of the resolution.

Nograles said the Mindanao legislators will meet with representatives of the Mindanao Economic Development Council in April in the city to discuss the proposal.

During the event, Nograles said the council will explain to the participants the issues concerning the proposal and possible ways of implementing it. He added that another issue to be discussed will be on who should undertake the feasibility study of the project.

Nograles, however, was certain that the project would be foreign-funded. “If they can do it in North Railway and in the South Railway we can do it in Mindanao. Hindi na ako papayag na may iba pang railway na magawa sa ibang lugar except in Mindanao (I can’t allow for any railway to be done in other places except in Mindanao),” he said.

Nograles said he could not promise that the railway project would be done during his two-year term as fourth top official of the country, but vowed to use his power and connections for its realization.

He also assured that he will double his annual development fund which he could use to implement more projects for Mindanao. At present, he has P70 million for the fund.

Sky Rider at Eden Nature Park Resort, Davao City

Sky rider located at Eden Nature Park Resort in Toril, Davao City was recently opened to the public in November of 2007 (barely a quarter old facility). If you have not indulged completely with the greens and the breeze up in the cooler part of Davao, then sky rider is a must ride to get more engulfed and get awed at Davao’s greenest view from the top at 100 ft. above for 400 meters. Its like a buffet table of lush greenery and blue skies.

So now you ask me how much? At only PhP 150.00 per ride, it has been an instant liking even to my niece, Alyssa (age 4) and nephew, Joshua (age 6). It was a great family weekend get away, perfect for all ages.

Remember the popular “Indiana Jones ride” at Eden? Well, the sky rider is the “godfather version” at a much higher depth, longer ride and with all relevant safety gears (i.e. harness and helmet). Oh, they also asked us to sign a waiver form. Should I get nervous? I must admit that I did, at first. The succeeding rides were addictive. I have to stop short because I was seriously considering putting the same facility in our farm in Bansalan. LOL. I could just imagine a “ride-all-you-can” facility like this. It would be a blast.

Its called Dugnac (durian + cognac = dugnac, pronounced as “dunyak”). What a clever way of coining words!

Don’t get fooled, it may look a bit messy. That’s durian meat, in milk, cream and cognac with a cherry topping. Its a brilliant way of eating durian meat in an unusual way. Durian coffee, durian ice cream, fresh durian but durian soaked in cognac is just great! You want to know where you can get this? Check out my future photoblogs and I will reveal it. :-)

Hof Gorei Beach Resort (Kaputian Island, Samal, Davao del Norte)

“To exceed every expectation of every guest every time”.

So I am playing favoritism nowadays. After several weeks (seriously it has only been two weeks!) in the city, Mandy and I would just look at each other, our eyes speaking of the same thing: beach! But where? So many beaches to go to, so little time. HOF GOREI BEACH RESORT has become our likeness for several reasons:

a. Personalized Service. On any given day, especially during peak seasons, service sucks in beach resorts. It takes 48 years for the food to be served, or a glass of cold drink but at Hof Gorei, the service starts even before you ride the resort’s small boat. Their staff assists happily to arriving guests by getting their stuffed bags. As soon as the resort’s shoreline is within sight, the staffs are awaiting, beaming from afar and eager to assist their guests and guide them to the bar where a welcome drink awaits. Even the security guard by the gate greeted us with a perfect “Good morning, Sir, Ma’am”.

The pineapple drink, laced with a bit of vanilla-flavored vodka, is soooo good, and better than the welcome drink served at Pearl Farm. While enjoying the drinks and the fresh salt air, our bags were to be delivered ahead to our rooms and we’ve got only ourselves and a key to worry about.

Royal treatment. The staffs are sensitive to the needs of their guests. They are very courteous and polite. Its like dining in a first class restaurant and bringing that experience in a beach resort. They fill your glass with water without hesitation and without asking. In fact, the silverware is impressive, using Scheffler in table arrangements.

Butlers? We were told by Madame April, the owner, that part of her vision is making her resort well known for its personalized service. She even entertained us with the idea of having “butlers” (think of Alfred, Batman’s loyal butler in an island shirt and shorts). We felt that kind of service through Vic, a staff who has been evidently following us every now and then, checking if we needed towels by the pool or a glass of cold water or drinks. It wasn’t annoying at all. Its just great to have someone attend to our requests right then and there.

b. This is REAL vacation. Tranquil, silence and privacy. If you ever dreamed of owning a beach resort then Hof Gorei is the place where you can feel exactly that way for a weekend. They have a stone hut, perfect for candle lit dinners overlooking the Davao City lights. Since its fairly new, and still developing, few guests come here. So imagine, owning a resort with excellent service. Now that’s real vacation.

c. Diverse flora and fauna. Paradise-like ambience. The vibrant owner, Madame April, loves flowers, birds and fish. So imagine this resort filled with those. Because there are flowers everywhere, I see lots of butterflies, sometimes diving the poolside, and swallows hovering above as I let myself float on the pool. We were told that she pets crows and so I hear them from time to time. All throughout the day and night, you hear chirping birds, chicks and even kabir! Its a sweet sound to put you to sleep, apart from crickets, and wake you up in the morning.

d. Pool Nestled in a Sunken Garden. So what’s so special about this pool? It has an underwater stool-type chair where half-dipped guests can sip a cold bottle of beer or a tropical fruit shake in a small shade provided by a bar built right next to the pool. Truly comfortable. Getting a good tan is no problem at all. I like the fountain-like accessory for a quick shade and a cool breeze on a very sunny day.

Just loving the hot sun, sea breeze and water splash!

e. Color-themed cottages. The yellow cottage is situated next to the pond where tilapia fingerlings were fed in the mornings. The blue cottage is located conveniently near the pool. The green cottage has an attic fit for big groups while the red and maroon cottages are nearer to the shore. The main building has three floors and an attic. It was called “Gorei house” was originally planned as a residential but was diverted to a restobar and more rooms in the third floor and attic with a glorious view of the beach, Malipano island on the right and Mt. Apo on a clear day. A small community rests quietly on the left and houses on stilts a few meters from the shoreline.

f. Sensible price for great tasting and generous serving of food. Ever heard of ridiculously expensive food in beach resorts that tastes nothing ordinary? Not Hof Gorei. The food selection includes European and Filipino dish, with a wide variety of salads to choose from. The pasta is served in heap serving, while the soups are great. Craving for something sweet? Order Madame April’s special (off the menu) desert called durian in cognac or “dugnac” (pronounced as “dunyak”) for a heavenly pleasure. I swear, its the next best thing to … you know what! ;-)

g. Getting there. From Davao Sta. Ana wharf, a small boat will transport 2-8 guests to the resort for a 50-minute ride. The motor’s noise is definitely deafening but patience is the key. The resort is just a few meters away from Pearl Farm and Malipano island.

Now you’re itching to check it out, right? And the inevitable question comes in to mind. How much would it cost? Think of it this way: You pay a package price that includes room accommodation, inclusive of boat transfer and free breakfast. Very practical.

Let’s check the history. The resort had its “soft opening” in August 12, 2007 slash birthday celebration of Madame April. Hof Gorei took 18 months in the making, and its still under a lot of developments. I can’t wait to come back here after 6 months. I’m sure its going to be much better!

Foreign direct investment in real estate soars 950% last year »
Feb 16, 2008 | By Glenrose

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (16 February) — The increasing trend on real property investments is again expected to happen in Southern Mindanao.

This was the projection of Securities and Exchange Commission Davao extension office director Atty Javey Paul Francisco during the Kapihan sa PIA held last Friday.

“With the performance last year, we expect that real property will have the same performance this year,” he said.

He reported that investments on real property within foreign direct investments (FDI) increased tremendously in 2007 registering a 950 percent mark.

He said only two investments was posted in 2006 but investments in the real property jumped to 21 percent in 2007 and 73 percent of these are stationed in Davao City.

SEC Davao director Atty. Javey Paul Francisco said most of the investments in this sector are Koreans.

Francisco said these investors prefer Davao City because it is considered as the center for business. It has the resources, manpower and they could find everything that they need for their operations here.

Meanwhile, he said also under FDI a 400 percent increase was noted in 2007 for mining with only one entity registered in 2006 to five in 2007.

The wholesale trade last year posted 25 new registration as against the 17 in 2006 or an increase of 47 percent.

Of the total P45.7 million capitalization under FDI, 65 percent or P30 million were total paid-up capital from Korean investors which was up from only P3.2 million or 17 percent of the total in 2006. (PIA)

Foreign investments up by 144% last year: SEC
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in Southern Mindanao has reported the total paid-up capital from new foreign direct investments last year had increased by 144 percent.

Lawyer Javey Paul Francisco, SEC regional director, said Friday the total paid-up capital amounted to P45.7 million, higher by 144 percent compared to the 2006 figure of only P18.7 million.

Francisco said the increase could be attributed to increase in new registrants in the mining, wholesale trade and real estate industries.

He added the foreign direct investments in the mining industry increased by 400 percent; 47 percent increase was noted for the wholesale trade; while 900 percent increase was recorded for the real estate industry.

"For the mining industry, from one entity in 2006, we already have five registrants in 2007. For the wholesale trade, we have 25 new registrants last year compared to only 17 in 2006, and for the real estate, we have 21 new investments in 2007 from only two in 2006," Francisco said.

Of the total new registrants from these three industries, Francisco claimed that 73 percent of the firms are stationed in Davao City.

Francisco further said that 65 percent or P30 million of the total paid-up are from Korean investors.

"More Korean investors showed interest to invest in 2007 than in 2006," Francisco said, adding that in 2006, Korean's total paid-up capital only amounted to P3.2 million.

Francisco claimed there has been a steady increase of Korean investors in Davao Region for the past several years.

Exec urges Davao City's landed, well-off to donate land

Tagum City, Davao del Norte (19 February) -- Davao City Administrator Wendel Avisado called on the City's landed and well-off to donate a parcel of land which could be used for building a new Davao City Hall.

Witnessing the ground-breaking ceremony of the new Tagum City Hall, Avisado confessed feeling "envious" of the new development in the neighboring city.

"Kinsa may dili maibog," (who would not be jealous?) he said referring to the City hall.

The 10-year old Tagum City is expected to have its P200 million new city hall completed next year, standing on the 15-hectare donated lot from Davao business magnate Jesus V. Ayala who personally came over to sign the Deed of Donation.

Avisado challenged landed individuals in Davao City to come forward and "follow what JVA had done".

He had doubts if the city government of Davao would be able to put up a new city hall without a donated land as this could spark controversies and negative speculation.

"Bibili pa tayo ng lupa? Then loan for the building construction? If no one would donate, there's no way that this (new city hall construction) will ever happen," he said.

He said a five-hectare to 10-hectare donated land would be enough to build a 10-storey new Davao City Hall which he said would change the landscape of the city's urban center.

Meanwhile, Avisado appreciated the manner in which the new Tagum City Hall would be built through handling it by local government administration.

He said the city government would have a sort of flexibility in the building construction and that it could save so much that it could use for add-on facilities, "as long as you have the right people to do the job".

He was amazed at the immense progress of Tagum City as he gave credit to the local officials "who have worked to achieved its development plans."

Macau, Malaysia to join Davao travel show
By Carlo P. Mallo
www.sunstar.com.ph

THE tourism boards of Malaysia and Macau will be two of the premier participants in this year's Davao Travel Show.

Susan Palad, director of Konkordans, said the Macau Tourism Board and the Malaysian Tourism Board would participate in the travel show.

Konkordans, together with Global-Link MP Events International Inc., are the organizers of the event.

"Unlike last year when we only had one resort from Malaysia, Aformosa, this year, it will be the Malaysian Tourism Board," Palad said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw at SM City Davao Monday.

Palad is hopeful that this year's travel show will outshine the previous one.

Last year, the Davao Travel Show was able to generate over P17 million of on site sales with more than 5,700 visitors.

The Davao travel Show 2008 is slated on February 22 to 24, 2008 at the Events Plaza of SM City Davao.

Palad is confident that the Davao Travel Show 2008 will bring together key players and major decision-makers of the travel industry during the three-day event.

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has endorsed the Davao Travel Show, and DOT Secretary Joseph Ace Durano is expected to attend its opening.

Bolton squatters get bunkhouses
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao

THE City Government of Davao turned over 11 bunkhouses inside the Sta. Ana Pier compound to the families whose shacks along Bolton Extension were demolished by the city last February 16.

However, the bunkhouses will just be a temporary shelter and not the illegal settlers' relocation site.

Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, who was present during the turnover, explained to the families that government has no other recourse but to demolish their shacks because they are occupying areas that shouldn't be occupied.

"Sa ibabaw na mo sa kanal nagpuyo. Lisud na siya labi na sa mga bata. Ang mga lalaki cge'g inom sa karsada (Your shacks were built on canals. That's a bad place to live in especially for the children. It becomes even more dangerous because your menfolk do nothing but get drunk along the road)," Duterte said.

But the mayor said the bunkhouses are just temporary shelter for the families until the city can find a suitable relocation for them that would not affect their economic activity.

Most of the beneficiary-families collect used paper, bottles, and newspaper for a living.

Duterte also asked City Economic Enterprises Chief Francisco Vales Jr. to arrange for the construction of a storage area where the families can keep their collected things.

"Para dili kalat ilang mga gamit. Hipos tanan (So that their properties will not be scattered around. Everything should be kept in one place)," Duterte said.

But Duterte warned the people, especially the men to refrain from having drinking sessions in the premises.

"Di ko gusto nga naay mag-inom diri. Gobyerno tag-iya aning lugara, nanghuram ra ta. Ingnon nako nang mga pulis nga nagbantay, diretso dakop kung naay mag-inom. Bantayi pud ninyo ning lugar. Ayaw pasudli ug lain. Di ko gusto madugangan pa mo diri (I do not want anybody to drink liquor here. This land is owned by the government, we are just borrowing this. I will tell the police to keep watch and arrest anyone found drinking liquor. You also watch over your place and not allow any other settler to come in. I do not want any additional family here)," Duterte sternly warned the families.

The mayor also asked them to take care of their families and if possible, not to increase the present number of children.

Ten of the bunkhouses are 2.4 by 2 meters in size, while one was slightly larger at 4.8 by 2 meters to accommodate a mute man and his eight children. The small settlement also has two common bathrooms and two common comfort rooms.

Electricity and water will also be shouldered by the City Government.

City forms new team of coastal cleaners
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao

NINETY-eight workers from 31 barangays were gathered to compose the new "Limpyo Baybay Team" for the city's intensified campaign in keeping the coastlines clean.

"Dugay na ni siya nga programa sa mga barangay pero murag iya-iya man gud maong gi-isa siya (This has been an ongoing program of the barangays, but those initiatives were run individually and so we have united this) under the city for a more sustainable program," Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte said Monday as the city handed four small boats to the team.

Duterte added that he would have more boats made, which are twice as the size of those given Monday, as these will be used in hauling garbage from the city's coastlines.

"Uncontrolled ang waste disposal to the sea so kinahanglan nato na aksyonan nga naay magbantay ug manglimpyo. Kinahanglan ipasabot nga sa dumpsite na dapat diretso ang basura (we should have people keeping watch that the garbage are gathered from the sea. People should understand that all garbage should go to the dumpsite)," Duterte said.

The mayor said continued disposal of garbage to the sea would destroy marine life.

"Kung maguba atong dagat, maguba pud ang food chain. Ang pobre, pinakadali na ang isda para sa adlaw-adlaw. Maski kinsa nga manakop, pwede. Kung ato ning pasagdan, wala na tay makaon sunod (If our marine resources are destroyed, the whole food chain is destroyed. The sea is there for the poor people to get their food from everyday. If we keep on destroying our seas, then we will no longer have food in the future)," Duterte said.

The Limpyo Baybay personnel were recruited from 26 coastal barangays and five riverbank barangays -- from Daliao to Lasang. The City Government employs them as contractual workers with minimum pay.

The mayor, however, said he would increase their pay as soon as he can make sure there are available funds from tax collection.

Exports rise by 10.5% in 2007
Sunstar Davao

MERCHANDISE export earnings from the Davao City port managed to surge by 10.5 percent last year despite the strengthening of the Philippine peso as against the US currency.

Data from the Bureau of Customs (BoC) and One Stop Export Documentation Center (OSEDC) housed the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI)-Southern Mindanao revealed that export earnings of the region in 2007 reached US$720.4 million, a remarkable leap from its 2006 level of US$651.736 million. The number of export entries totaled 9,516, four percent higher than that of the previous year.

The top 10-dollar earners from Davao port accumulated US$691.6 million in 2007, which showed a respectable growth of 15.5 percent.

Of the top 10 exports, banana (fresh, puree, and flour) maintained its hold as the leading export commodity of the region, which posted US$417.7 million.

Meanwhile, pineapple, both fresh and canned, was on the second spot reaping US$120.8, higher by 144.53 percent as compared to previous year's figure.

The other commodities included in the top 10 are rubber, banana chips, activated carbon/charcoal/dust/briquettes, desiccated coconut chips, finished wood products, frozen tuna, coconut/acid oil/cake/liquor, and asparagus.

Moreover, the report showed that the exports generated from the identified Industry Clusters accounted for 72 percent of the total export earnings. Export products under the region's Industry Clusters were valued at US$518 million.

The Industry Clustering Approach is a development strategy implemented by the Regional Development Council-Economic Development Committee (RDC-EDC). Under this, 11 industries of great potential -- mango, banana, seaweed, coconut, wood, mining, eco-tourism, information and communications technology (ICT), machineries and equipment parts, meat and poultry, and bio-fuel -- are being focused for development.

The initiatives being done to improve market access of local exporters have been the major factor contributing to the increase, by Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz said.

Aside from the Industry Clustering Approach, Cruz cited the Export Pathways program, trade fairs, trade mission, and product development projects as among the contributory factors that have enabled the local exporters gain an advantage over their competitors.

The Export Pathways program of DTI-Southern Mindanao is an innovative strategy, which aims to assist existing and new exporters by offering client-focused interventions to fit their requirements at any stage of their business.

A total of 127 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in the region were enrolled in the program.

Most of these SMEs are engaged in food processing - banana chips, dried mango, and mango puree. The said strategy has been adopted by DTI-Head Office for replication to all other regions.

The trade fairs, on the other hand, have helped local entrepreneurs find business partners who could be their channel towards introducing their products abroad. Among these trade fairs were the National Trade Fair (NTF) held in Manila, Mindanao Trade Expo (MTE), and Davao Trade Expo (DATE), which were both conducted in Davao City.

Meanwhile, the Mindanao trade and investment mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) raked in positive feedbacks such as the creation of the Magic 25 project wherein the 1.4 million overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) there are being encouraged to patronize at least 25 Saudi Riyals worth of Filipino products per month. The RS25.00 per OFW every month would mean an additional of US$112 million to the region's annual export achievement.

The trade and investment mission has resulted to the establishment of trading companies by three members of the delegation representing the RD Group of Companies, Sagrex Corporation, and Maharlika Agro-Marine Ventures. The trading companies vowed to also handle the promotion of other Philippine-made products that are of potential in the KSA market.

"By joining trade fairs, trade mission, and the like, entrepreneurs have bigger chances of widening their market reach," Cruz said.

Cruz is optimistic the region can sustain its export records considering that DTI 11 and its partner organizations will embark on a number of trade fairs and trade missions this year. (Press release)

DCWD reaps awards in 29th national confab
Sunstar Davao

DAVAO City Water District (DCWD) was conferred as first Top Water District Performer in very large category for the year 2006 by the Philippine Association of Water Districts (PAWD) during its 29th national convention held in Cagayan de Oro City last February 7.

The association recognized DCWD for its remarkable performance in its operation and management.

The water districts were judged in these criteria: 50 percent, financial performance (current ratio, 20 percent; debt services ratio, 10 percent; debt equity ratio, 10 percent; and operating ratio, 10 percent), and 50 percent technical performance (collection ratio, 15 percent; non revenue water, 15 percent; water loss rate, 15 percent; and served population, (5 percent).

In the selection, only DCWD and Cebu WD met the criteria. The five other water districts under the very large category are Bacolod City WD, Dasmariñas WD, Metro Iloilo WD, Quezon Metro WD, and Zamboanga WD.

In the year 1995, 1997, 2002 and 2003, the utility was also cited as Outstanding Water District in the same category by the Local Water Utilities Administration. It was also a nominee in 2006.

Aside from said award, DCWD's news magazine "Crystal Flow" also named as first best publication (news magazine category) winning over many other entries all over the country. The award recognizes DCWD's adherence to the highest quality and standard of print and media production focusing its editorial policy to the attainment of WD's goals and objectives making itself an effective information and communication tool to massively promote the water district concept to various publics.

The Crystal Flow was unanimously chosen by the judges from University of the Philippines (UP), Manila Bulletin (MB), and Philippine Daily Inquirer (PDI). They commented that said news magazine embodied a balance and in-depth articles written by professional writers. It is also well - edited and its layout was perfect. The other finalists were Break Water of Butuan City WD (1st runner up), Tubig San Joseño of San Jose Del Monte City WD (3rd runner up); and Aguador of Cabanatuan City WD (2nd runner up). The DCWD's Crystal Flow editorial board is headed by Maria Editha C. Monje, editor in chief and manager of the public information/relations division. She also served as the national contest coordinator of the 13th PAWD National Oratorical Contest.

The entries were judged in these criteria: relevance (as to the vision, mission and goals of WD), 20 percent; content (variety and depth contents of the newsletter), 30 percent; style (grammar standard), 20 percent; form (aesthetic design /layout), 15 percent; and originality (innovativeness and creativity in content and form), 15 percent.

DCWD's contestant, Krystel Deane S. Suam of Southpoint School, who represented Socemwic (Southern and Central Mindanao Water Information Council) to the 13th National Oratorical tilt also emerged as champion.

The awards were personally received by general manager Rodora N. Gamboa who also served as national coordinator of the conference's technical sessions.

Gamboa credited the citations to the efforts and dedication of DCWD's human resources in giving efficient and effective water service delivery to the Davaoeños. She also said that DCWD proves to stand still amidst the crisis it has encountered last year and the recognitions and awards from PAWD paid off the pain. Engr. Gamboa is hopeful that the utility will soar higher as it celebrates its 35th year of service this year. (DCWD/JDPDumalag)

Davao horse club wins most number of awards
Sunstar Cebu

DAVAO won the grand prize of the Kabayo Festival recently renamed Gov Cup 2008, besting six other provinces in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The participants came from the 11-year-old Davao Horse Club.

The group garnered 12 wins, including five champions of the 16 categories. The triumph also garnered for the group the Gov Cup 2008 trophy.

The club’s horse, Big Shot, also won second place in the class A oval race.

“We worked hard for this. We trained our horses and riders,” said Davao Horse Club president Brad Pitt Batu.

They came to Cebu with no intention of going back to Davao empty-handed.

The horse show and competition took place at the reclamation area in Mandaue City.

Batu said they trained for a month.

Brotherhood

“The cohesiveness of the group was responsible for the win. We practiced, there was brotherhood and camaraderie,” said rider George Walter Misa, who garnered two wins—second placer in the class A barrel race and first place in the class A show jumping.

“The (grand prize) win is proof of our hard work and success of the club,” Misa said.

The Davao group was also the loudest cheerers during the awarding last Sunday at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia, Mandaue City Mayor Jonas Cortes and Vice Mayor Carlo Fortuna were there to hand in the awards, as well as officials of the Cebu Equine Owners, Breeders and Sportsmen Association (Ceobsa).

Ceobsa organized the Gov Cup 2008. The horse show and competition were first organized in 2004.

After four years, Ceobsa founding president Anton Quisumbing said the horse show is better than ever.

“It was unbelievably successful,” he said.

Aside from Davao, there were also participants from two groups in Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Bohol, Ormoc and Dumaguete. There were at least 80 individual participants.

Governor Garcia believes the show is already of international caliber.

“We will not limit ourselves to the province or the region. This could very well be a major international event,” she said.

Former Manila mayor Ismael “Mel” Mathay Jr., a horse enthusiast, was also in Cebu to witness the Gov Cup. He saw a lot of potential in the event.

“Manila is too crowded, this is an opportunity for Manila horsemen to come to Cebu,” Mathay told Sun.Star Cebu after the awarding.

Aside from Davao Horse Club, other big winners were participants from Bukidnon with 14 wins and Ceobsa with 13. (JGA)

(JGA)

i dunno, i still have apprehensions about durian.

Dayanghirang is new floor leader
By Grace L. Plata

SECOND District Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang won the Floor Leadership over Third District Councilor Victorio Advincula during the special meeting and election called for by Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte Monday.

Dayanghirang over a phone interview said he got the floor leadership with a majority vote of 15 against Advincula's 10 votes.

The position of assistant floor leader, which was held by Dayanghirang, was automatically declared vacant and Third District Councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz was elected as assistant floor leader unopposed.

"Tomorrow (Tuesday), we will be arranging who will replace me as chair of the committee on peace and public safety. We will act according to the instructions of the vice-mayor who is back as presiding officer," Dayanghirang said.

Second District Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, rural and urban development, who expressed his interest in the floor leadership last week, backed out at the last minute.

"Urban poor and shelter groups have texted me and asked that I reconsider and stay as housing chair. I decided to do so in the interest of public service more than my personal decision," Cabling said.

City forms new team of coastal cleaners
By Grace L. Plata

Macau, Malaysia to join Davao travel show
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE tourism boards of Malaysia and Macau will be two of the premier participants in this year's Davao Travel Show.

Susan Palad, director of Konkordans, said the Macau Tourism Board and the Malaysian Tourism Board would participate in the travel show.

Post here your Valentine's Day greetings

Exec urges Davao City’s landed, well-off to donate land »

Feb 19, 2008 | By Glenrose | 0 Comments

Tagum City, Davao del Norte (19 February) — Davao City Administrator Wendel Avisado called on the City’s landed and well-off to donate a parcel of land which could be used for building a new Davao City Hall.

Witnessing the ground-breaking ceremony of the new Tagum City Hall, Avisado confessed feeling “envious” of the new development in the neighboring city.

“Kinsa may dili maibog,” (who would not be jealous?) he said referring to the City hall.

The 10-year old Tagum City is expected to have its P200 million new city hall completed next year, standing on the 15-hectare donated lot from Davao business magnate Jesus V. Ayala who personally came over to sign the Deed of Donation.

Avisado challenged landed individuals in Davao City to come forward and “follow what JVA had done”.

He had doubts if the city government of Davao would be able to put up a new city hall without a donated land as this could spark controversies and negative speculation.

“Bibili pa tayo ng lupa? Then loan for the building construction? If no one would donate, there’s no way that this (new city hall construction) will ever happen,” he said.

He said a five-hectare to 10-hectare donated land would be enough to build a 10-storey new Davao City Hall which he said would change the landscape of the city’s urban center.

Meanwhile, Avisado appreciated the manner in which the new Tagum City Hall would be built through handling it by local government administration.

He said the city government would have a sort of flexibility in the building construction and that it could save so much that it could use for add-on facilities, “as long as you have the right people to do the job”.

He was amazed at the immense progress of Tagum City as he gave credit to the local officials “who have worked to achieved its development plans.” (PIA/JMDA)

Davao Region, designated as Region XI, is one of the regions of the Philippines, located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. Davao Region consists of four provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and Davao del Sur. The region encloses the Davao Gulf and its regional center is Davao City. Davao is the Hispanicized pronunciation of daba-daba, the Bagobo word for "fire" (the Cebuano translation is "kayo").

Region XI was originally called Southern Mindanao, and in addition to the three Davao provinces also included Surigao del Sur and South Cotabato. At that time, Compostela Valley was still part of Davao del Norte. Republic Act No. 7225, ratified on March 16, 1992, created the province of Sarangani from South Cotabato. Then, Republic Act No. 7901, signed on February 3, 1995, by President Fidel V. Ramos transferred Surigao del Sur into the newly created region of Caraga (Region XIII). Finally, on September 19, 2001, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Executive Order No. 36 reorganized the regions and provinces in Mindanao. This moved South Cotabato and Sarangani to SOCCSKSARGEN region and renamed Southern Mindanao as Davao Region.

This region also bears the nickname Silicon Gulf.

CULTURAL GROUPS The region is an in-migration area, with a mixture of migrants, which include Cebuanos (making up the majority), Ilonggos and Ilocanos. Its ethnic groups include Manobos, Bagobos, Maiisakas, Maguindanon, T’boli, Tirurays and Muslims.

CLIMATE The region has a generally uniform distribution of rainfall through the year. It lies outside the typhoon belt.

NATURAL RESOURCES Aside from its forestland and fertile fields, Southern Mindanao has mineral resources of chrornite, iron, nickel, and manganese, gold, copper and other non-metallic minerals. Five of the major fishing grounds of the Philippines are located in the region.

ECONOMY While the region’s economy is predominantly agri-based. it is now developing into a center for agro-industrial business, trade and tourism. Its competitive advantage is in agri-industry as its products, bananas, pineapples, fresh asparagus, and fish products are exported abroad. The region can be a vital link to markets in other parts of Mindanao, Brunei Darussalam and parts of Malaysia and Indonesia.

There is a gradual shift to industrialization as shown with industry’s growth rate of 8.1% in 1996. Other economic activities are mining, fishery, forestry and agriculture.

FACILITIES The region’s principal ports are the Sasa International Seaport in Sasa, Sta. Ana Pier in the Chinatown District, Panabo Seaport in Davao del Norte, and Mati Seaport in Davao Oriental. Infrastructure developments in the cities within the region are considered excellent.

The airport in Davao City is the largest and most developed in Mindanao. The region is accessible by land, air and sea. The region has adequate communications facilities, reliable power and an abundant water supply.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davao
