^^ This landmark by Architect Arnel Villacampa is inspired by the 400-year old architectural designs of Yuan Garden in Shanghai, China. The columns will be designed similar as the bamboo, a traditional construction material of the Chinese. The archway is embellished with fish and pearl, the symbols of the Villa-Abrille Family whose ancestry originated from Amoy, China, now Xiamen.

Formula drafted to calculate losses to env’t degradation
By Joel B. Escovilla
A United States Agency for International Aid (USAID) project will seek to come up with a formula to calculate the potential revenue lost to environment degradation.
Philippine Environmental Governance 2 Project (EcoGov2) Regional Coordinator Ferdinand Esguerra said local government units understand the language of revenues and losses and the formula hopefully will jolt officials to spring into action and preserve the environment.
“It’s called resource economics, like for Davao Gulf we estimate $2 billion is generated in fishes and other resources each year,” he said. “And $2 billion we think is still too small.”
EcoGov2 partners with the LGUs to respond to environmental threats by reducing overfishing and the use of destructive fishing practices; reduce illegal logging and conversion of natural forests; and improve the management of solid wastes and wastewater.
According to the presentation of the EcoGov2 project in a briefing with the media, Davao Gulf has an area of 623,300 hectares and a coastline of approximately 520 kilometers. It cuts across the four Davao provinces including Davao City.
Esguerra said that the gulf is a major fishing ground and is “utilized by around 19,000 fulltime municipal fishers and 866 fishers engaged in commercial fisheries.”
“The economic value of resources is huge but so far the national government is only paying lip service supposedly to protect environment but not providing enough resources to the DENR to do its job,” he said, referring to the national agency task to protect the environment.
Data from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Region 11 show that the gulf produces about 22,000 metric tons of fish per year.
The BFAR-XI also sounded the alarm that overfishing and wrong practices, such as the continued use of fine mesh net in harvesting fish, threaten the production of the Davao Gulf.
Jose Villanueva, project leader of the National Stock Assessment Project of BFAR-XI, had claimed that exploitation of the gulf increased from an average ratio of .5 percent in 1998 to .7 percent as of their latest assessment in 2003.
If goes unhampered, he said, the possibility that the exploitation of the gulf will increase is very high.
In September 2005, the advocacy group, Save Davao Gulf Foundation (SDGF), signed an agreement with the Philippine Banana Growers and Exporters Association (PBGEA) to draft an environmental mapping of the gulf to determine the source and direction of pollutants.
Margie Moran-Floirendo, SDGF executive director, said the project is a satellite mapping of the currents and density of the Davao Gulf so they will be able to trace “who are polluting the Davao Gulf and where it is coming from.”
Floirendo said the Davao Gulf remains the 10th fishing ground and second largest in marine biodiversity in the country, and habitat to 11 marine mammal species.
She said the framework plan to conserve the biodiversity of the gulf is important to maintain balance among business, progress and the source of food.

UP-Mindanao holds citywide photo contest
STUDENTS of the University of the Philippines Mindanao (UP-Min) are holding a digital photo contest that is geared towards capturing student’s perception on the current status of education.
The event, LENTE: A Citywide Digital Photo Contest, is organized by the UP-Min’s College of Science and Mathematics-Student Council (CSM-SC) in partnership with the HIMATI: The Official Student Publication of the University of the Philippines Mindanao and in collaboration with the UP Mindanao Foundation Celebration.

The contest is open to all UP and non-UP students in Davao City.
There is no registration fee and entries shall be submitted through email at: lentecontest@gmail.com on or before 7 pm of Feb. 25, 2008. :hilarious.......100 lightyears away tlga? This is Dubai's Mile-Long Super Bridge set for March construction. This will be the world's largest arch bridge, with 2000 vehicles set to cross its 12 lanes—per hour, in each direction—when it's slated for completion in 2012. At 670 ft. tall, Dubai's next super structure will stand higher than the George Washington Bridge (604 ft.) but fall short of San Francisco's existing Golden Gate Bridge (746 ft.). weeeee sana asteeg din ang design ng Samal Davao bridge.

dinabaw February 20th, 2008, 10:07 AM ONB optimistic of growth in banking industry
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (20 February) -- One Network Bank (ONB) is optimistic of positive growth in the banking industry this year as it targets some P6.1 billion in gross loans and a net income of P335 million which is very much higher than its performance last year.
ONB president Alex Buenaventura during the Davao Business Reporters Forum held at the MediSpa at SM City said he attributes the positive performance to a much bigger loans in agriculture as well as the salary loans of teachers including business loans.
"These are our main anchors and the agri loan have a 100 percent increase in loan availament," he said.
Buenaventura reported that in 2007 their net income after tax was pegged at P205 million while the gross loans reached P4.488 billion. ONB branches totaled to 65 and has about 61 ATM sites.
By 2008, Buenaventura said they would be opening new branches making the total number of ONB banks to 75 and the number of ATM sites at 88.
He said they had been negotiating for the opening of new branches in Surigao City, Gingoog City in Misamis Oriental, Ozamis City in Misamis Occidental, Dipolog and Sindangan in Zamboanga del Norte.
Buenaventura said each branch will have a capital expense of P7 million even as he said that they would be spending much on the land acquisition saying that in the selection of the site their priority of selection is the location based on their criteria.
"And we do not want to sacrifice the location and it has to be in accordance with our needs," he said.
He said they already filed the application and hopefully these additional five branches will be in operation soon.
The ONB has some 35 areas within their priority areas to set up their branch and these are all in Mindanao and it is within our policy that the operation will only be concentrated in the island, he said.
He said that even if they operate in the rural areas ONB status is like any commercial bank that could extend several products to include fund transfer and foreign remittances.
As of end 2007 Buenaventura said ONB has a total depositors of 417,512, and 78,963 borrowers. (PIA)

House of Hope shelters cancer patients
By Mai Gevera
Davao City (21 February) -- The 280-square meter renovated house with seven bedrooms, a decent kitchen, and a green vegetable garden is already the paradise of cancer kid patients and their families who have been undergoing medication and operation in the Davao Medical Center.
An idea that became a reality in November 2006, funded in February 2007, constructed in May, and started accepting temporary residents in August, the House of Hope then became the pet project of the Rotary of Waling-Waling Davao.
Dr. Mae Dolendo, a Rotarian and at the same time an Oncologist, pushed for this project as she believed that health is a shared responsibility, not just from the government sector but also from the community and civic groups.
The House of Hope then became refuge of cancer patients and their families who live far from Davao City and cannot afford to travel every now and then just to comply with the medication requirements of a cancer patient.
It houses families that come as far as Indonesia, Zamboanga, Cotabato, and other provinces of Mindanao.
"The Davao Medical Center is the only hospital in Mindanao that caters cancer kid patients. That is why we take advantage of putting up a shelter home for families who are not residing in Davao City," Malou Jacinto said.
The shelter home is said to be benefiting about 300 beneficiaries since it started operation last August 2007. It has addressed problems on transportation cost and health concerns that the patient need to maintain as they undergo series of operations like chemotherapy.
Roger Rosareal Jr, father of a cancer kid patient, shared how his family saved so much as they were able to benefit from the House of Hope.
"We live in North Cotabato and it would be so expensive for my family if we go home quite often. Traveling very often is also unhealthy for our kid especially when he is advised to just stay in a clean room with clean surroundings so as not to acquire infections," Roger said.
Before learning about the House of Hope, Roger and his family were forced to rent a small place and pay as much as P3,000 per month just to secure a clean shelter for the family and the cancer patient.
Fortunately, Dr. Dolendo offered the House of Hope as the second home the Rosareal family.
Having offered for a free accommodation is already taken by Roger as a big help and a big savings for the family. He shared that P27,000 a week is already very heavy for his family to raise and pay for the operation like chemotherapy.
Rotary of Waling-Waling Davao still pledged continued support in this endeavor and even assured future beneficiaries that they, too, will be offered with this free shelter home as long as they meet the criteria set by the Rotary group.
"We are also very happy that the parents of the cancer patients have been cooperating with us by handling the maintenance and making sure that the house is spic and span for the benefit of the cancer patients," she said. (PIA) [top]

Nightlife, shopping pushed as Davao City come-on
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (21 February) -- Key players in the tourism industry of Davao are considering the city's healthy nightlife and shopping centers as the destinations that they will push for promoting the city.
Susan Palad, President of the Davao Association for Travel Agents said they thought of this package in order not to compete with the destinations being promoted by its neighbors in the BIMP EAGA region.
She explained that these activities will purely be wholesome even as she said that they stick to their vision of promoting mainly family entertainment.
She mentioned that there are activities at night in the city that promotes our culture and music referring to the Taboan at Matina Town Square, Jack's Ridge and other organized events in places like venue and in top hotels of the city.
The People's Park at night is in itself a destination and it is already included in the package that the travel agencies had designed.
"These are the things that we want our visitors to experience," she said.
She also said that the malls here are must see destinations and still many of our visitors want to check that out.
"We wanted to redesign packages to complement that of our neighbors," she said.
Palad also said these are part of the BIMP EAGA tour packages that they will launch in coordination with other airline operators.
She reiterated that their tour packages are designed in such a way that it will not compete with that of the other BIMP EAGA neighbors but complement with each other.
Meanwhile she said that they often get positive feedback especially from international visitors on Davao City being a clean city.
She said these visitors were really impressed of seeing a city life Davao to maintain clean streets and surroundings.
The Non-Smoking within the city also attracted the attention of the guests, Palad said.
She said the two aspects that had left good impressions to our visitors not only on the physical appearance of the city but the way government and private sector cooperate with each other in maintaining a good environment. (PIA) [top]

Air links, tourism concerns tackled in 2-day Eaga meet
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao
THE two-day BIMP-Eaga Travel and Airlines Convergence Meeting at the Marco Polo Davao will discuss possible joint efforts to help the sub-region expand and sustain viable routes, as well as promote itself as a single tourism destination.
The meeting will start on Saturday until Sunday.
Mary Ann Montemayor, BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council chair, said the meeting will be attended by some 30 key tourism and air transport players, composed of airline executives, general sales and travel agents, tour operators, marketing teams and donor organizations.
"This meeting of decision makers from the airline and travel sectors of BIMP-Eaga seeks to increase awareness on the developments in the BIMP-Eaga airline and tourism sector," Montemayor said.
The meeting, she said, aims to come up with a list of joint programs and projects that will make Eaga routes move viable and come up with an appropriate tourism brand for BIMP-Eaga as basis for marketing and promotions.
It also aims to identify practical mechanisms to ensure continuing coordination and cooperation in the development of air and tourism sectors of the sub-region.
Meanwhile, it was learned that the airline sector will meet ahead of the convergence meeting on February 22 to discuss updates and action status on the results of the 1st BIMP-Eaga Airlines Forum in June last year.
The group will also discuss specific details that would firm up commitment of the airline companies to serve Eaga routes.
Art Boncato, sales director of the Marco Polo Davao, on the other hand, said the meeting would have positive impact to the city.
He said it is always Marco Polo's objective to put Davao City as one of the key tourism destinations in the Philippines.
"Our strength in the tourism industry is to continue to look for investors. The meeting is one important event that would address some concerns not only in the airline sector, but also in the tourism sector," Boncato said in Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum.
Germans Technical Cooperation, Asian Development Bank, BIMP-Eaga Transport, Infrastructure and ICT Development Cluster, Bimp-Eaga Joint Tourism Development Cluster, Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), BIMP-Eaga Business Council, BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council, and the Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco) organized the meeting.

Indonesian consul to focus on econ, cultural ties with Davao
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao
THE new Indonesian consul in Davao City said Wednesday that the Indonesian Consulate Office in the city would give focus on economic and cultural relations between Indonesia and the Philippines, particularly Davao City.
"We have plans to give enough focus on economic relations and people to people contact between Indonesia and the Davao City. These concerns should be strengthened," Loebesi said in Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao.
Post here your Valentine's Day greetings
Loebesi further said Indonesia and the Philippines have many things in common.
He said Indonesian cuisines are prepared similar to the way Filipinos do their own.
This, he said, was actually the reason why the Indonesian Consulate Office in the city had initiated the first food and cultural festival of Indonesia at the SM Entertainment Plaza on December 29 last year.
The festival showcased Indonesian cuisines and culture and provided knowledge to Dabawenyos that Indonesia and the Philippines have almost similar culture and cuisines.
Loebesi, however, said in terms of security, Davao City is safer compared to some cities in his country. He even said that Davao City is safer than Jakarta in Indonesia.
"I feel safe here in Davao. In Jakarta, when I walk on the streets, I should be extra careful, I don't feel safe. I think people should be more careful in Jakarta, even in Los Angeles and in New York than in Mindanao" Loebesi said.

Davao divers eye Olympic slots
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan
Sunstar Davao
DAVAO City divers opened the campaign for a berth to the Beijing Olympics Wednesday in the Good Luck Beijing 2008 16th FINA Diving World Cup in Beijing, China.
Sydney Olympian Zardo Domenios, who hails from Panacan, and Niño Carog, were still strutting their stuff in the men's three-meter springboard preliminary as of press time.
Domenios and Carog, who won bronze medals in the synchronized three-meter springboard in the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, were going up against a top field of 59 competitors in the event.
Sheila Mae Perez, who made her Olympic debut in Sydney Australia in 2000, is slated to see action in the women's three-meter springboard Friday.
Perez, before leaving for China in January, told Sun.Star Davao said she hopes to make it at the top five of the qualifying.
There are 50 other divers also seeking Olympic slots in the 3-meter, an event Perez ruled for the gold medal in the 23rd Philippines SEA Games and 24th Thailand SEA Games.
Rexel Ryan Fabriga and Jaime Asok, whose tandem captured the SEA Games 10m synchronized platform gold in Thailand, will see action in the individual men's 10m platform preliminary on Saturday. There are 47 of them eyeing slots for the world's premier sports spectacle in Beijing.
The Philippines, still hungry for an Olympic gold, had recently won one slot in boxing courtesy of Harry Tañamor. RP jins Tshomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivero also gained Olympic berths along with Dumaguete City archer Jennifer Chan.

Law against traffic hazards sought
By Jose G. Dalumpines Published : 2008-02-20
Mindanao Times
CELSO GEMPESAW, Traffic Management Center chief, has urged the city council to craft a law intended to clear the highways of traffic hazards.
Gempesaw said one measure that needs an enabling policy is the use of wheel clamp for big trucks using the shoulders of the national highway as parking area.
He said using a wheel clamp on violating vehicles is like impounding them on site.
Gempesaw said this law will be applied especially for vehicles parked illegally on the road.
He said under this proposed measure, owners of the clamped vehicles can only get their trucks after paying the corresponding penalty.
Under the current situation, Gempesaw urged truck drivers who park their cargo trucks at the national highway to install early warning devices in front and at the rear of the vehicles to reduce traffic hazard.
Gempesaw observed some truck drivers are using the shoulders of the road as parking area, particularly along big establishments in Sasa, and a few kilometers before a softdrinks company in Bangkal.
He vowed to run after drivers who would violate rules on traffic safety especially drivers who would no longer use an early warning device that cautions motorists of the danger ahead.
Gempesaw said the truckers in Sasa area have complied with this policy while those at the Bangkal area still have to follow the rule.
“The bottling firm has pledged to shift its product distribution through dealership which will reduce the use of big trucks that usually wait along the highway waiting for their turn to either load or unload,” he said.
Gempesaw admitted their limitations in clearing the highway with traffic hazards.
He said traffic enforcers seem tolerant of this violation since during the confrontation drivers of trucks parked along the highway are nowhere to be found. “We cannot wait any longer, our enforcers who are small in number have other responsibilities to do,” Gempesaw said.
He explained the TMC does not have a towing vehicle for big trucks.
Gempesaw said their towing vehicle is only good only for smaller vehicles.

dinabaw February 21st, 2008, 02:49 AM Davao Food Trip: Metro Grub
Saturday evening found me, care of the Davao Food Trip series, in the company of blogpals at Metro Grub. Now, I'm no stranger to Metro Grub, having patronized the joint several times in the past. But it was good to have dinner there with a larger group.
Metro Grub is one of the restaurants in Metro Avenue. It's a small place, almost-but-not-quite a hole in the wall. In keeping with the now-popular cafe style, the dining area spills out into the Metro Avenue covered court.
Metro Grub has a no-frills student ambience. That's not surprising since it caters largely to the students from Holy Cross. This is not to say that it's dingy or unkempt; in fact, Metro Grub is immaculately clean and well-kept. Metro Grub just seems well-suited to informal gatherings I associate with college students.
(One talking point for the evening was Metro Grub's tables: they had compartments underneath where you could keep your bags and other things. It was a hit with us notebook-toting bloggers.)
Metro Grub's menu falls within the affordable end of the mid-range scale. Prices range from P40 to P120, with their rice bowl offerings hovering around P60 to P80. Since it's catering to the yuppie and student market, Metro Grub's specialties focus on single-serve dishes.
My personal favorite in Metro Grub is their ample Chicken Teriyaki rice bowl. It's the right blend of sweet and savory. It's served with sticky rice and buttered vegetables, so it hits the spot. I also had a spot of pork spare ribs, something I'll be trying in full sometime soon.
The other dishes we tried included their tangy kinilaw and their eponymous Metro Grub Chips. The other fellows each ordered their own bowls and dishes so there wasn't much opportunity to share. That's all right, though: I'll be going back for additional servings soon.

Don’t get fooled, it may look a bit messy. That’s durian meat, in milk, cream and cognac with a cherry topping. Its a brilliant way of eating durian meat in an unusual way. Durian coffee, durian ice cream, fresh durian but durian soaked in cognac is just great! You want to know where you can get this? Check out my future photoblogs and I will reveal it. :-)

Braga: City deputized to manage its water resources
By Grace L. Plata
FULL implementation of the city's Water Code will soon be a reality.
This as the City Government of Davao will soon be granted with the right to protect its own water sources as deputized by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB), according to the report made by Councilor Pilar Braga Tuesday.
Post here your Valentine's Day greetings
Braga, author of the city's Water Code, headed the seven-man City Government delegation to meet with NWRB officials to force the issues for the city to protect its own waters based on the Ordinance No. 117-01 or the Water Resources Management and Protection Code of Davao City.
The Davao City Water District (DCWD), on the other hand, was represented by its manager Rhodora Gamboa and lawyer Bernard Delima Jr.
"The Davao delegation underscored before the NWRB officials the desire and determination of the Davao City Government to protect its water resources through the immediate implementation of the city's Water Resources Management and Protection Code. Likewise, it was pointed out that through the Memorandum of Agreement, the city government and DCWD could assist the NWRB in implementing the provisions of the Water Code of the Philippines, as its deputies," Braga said.
Braga, however, said NWRB pointed out certain items in the Water Code of Davao City that has to be revised, like the definition of "domestic purpose," the inclusion of surface water in the scope of protection, and the clarification of the city's "protected areas."
"It was agreed by all parties that since amending the ordinance would be a lengthy process, corrections or revisions will be integrated in the Memorandum of Agreement and/or the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR)," Braga said.
On the matter of deputizing the Davao City Government, NWRB deputy executive director Nathaniel Santos reportedly promised to give the city a copy of the new guidelines for deputization as soon as these are finalized in the conference with the Philippine Association of Water Districts (Pawad) to be held in Cagayan de Oro City the same week.
Braga said Santos also assured that the NWRB board would be going over the proposal of the joint delegation from Davao regarding the Memorandum of Agreement and the deputization during the board meeting on February 20, 2008.

dinabaw February 21st, 2008, 09:02 AM Samal Island, Philippines
Published by Christine on Friday, December 29, 2006 at 2:28 AM.
http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/8130/227850659567bac64436oe4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Samal Island is a distant away from the shores of Davao, being known for its white sand beaches and several resorts that cater tourists and locals. Its virgin islands were well protected from commercialization to preserve the ecotourism.
For almost quite a while, Samal has been one of the subjects I had made for my ecotourism designs, since the island is a potential for development. Many designs apprehended to be passed in order to enhance the beauty of the island that will invite tourists. The several islands including the vanishing islands is one of the attraction. Tourists are welcome for scuba diving, site seeing and swimming due to the rich underwater wildlife.
Getting to Samal is as easy as getting one ride bus to the next stop as for the locals using bus or jeepney, these modes of transportation carried over to a water vessel and transported to the island. You may also have ferryboats exclusively for Paradise island resort customers. The ferryboats are waiting in interval in the Lanang shores while another exclusive boats are in Sta. Ana Pier. Wind and Wave and several other boats servicing through the island are available for booking in Sta. Ana Pier. You may choose on going to Talikud and Vanishing island.
Samal is very convenient for those who want to unwind and getting in touch with nature. One of the famous resorts you will find here is the Paradise Island. The towering coconut palms and mangrove along the sides keep the air and water clean. They had preserved the beauty of the nature by establishing only few huts and well maintained food courts. Inside you will find a mini zoo where all kinds of birds found in the island are present including turtles, snakes, monkeys and deer. They also cater for stay in customers or tourists in the island, amenities are present like tennis table and playing area for children. The resorts are open all year round. What is beautiful in this place is the serenity being close to nature. The resorts here are prohibited from too much commercialization to prevent pollution and keep the beauty of the nature. Even when swimming at the shores, you still find small fishes leaping over the shores.
The vanishing island where it is appropriate for scuba diving is breathtaking. When going to the middle of the island at high tide, you will only find three huts that were made for those staying in the island. You can walk through the vanishing island at knee high however beware to the depth of some are not the same. Always carry with you a life jacket when swimming is not your forte. The local government keeps the vanishing island to be a mangrove sanctuary, most of the people visiting the island have with them mangroves to be planted. This is to shelter the fishes and secure the coral reefs.
A main attraction around the island is the Pearl Farm, where there is also a sanctuary for pearls. A resort where tourist can stay with different bonus packages. You will experience the fabulous site for sunrise and sunset. The establishments are designed according to the culture of Mindanao where you will find a replica of houses for Maranao and other tribes in Mindanao. The weather in Samal is just amazingly perfect where it is free from typhoon. The crystal clear coastline rich with underwater life.
Caves are found in Talikud Island, hiking is the best activity in White Stone Mountain and go fishing in San Jose Muslim Fishing village. Hagimit falls are just spectacular as going to the beach in Pena Plata.
There is so much outdoor activities you can enjoy for you and your family. No noise from the city, all are calm and simple. People living in the island are hospitable to accommodate tourists. No wonder the island was chosen as dream cities of the future by the Institute for Solidarity in Asia or ISA.
Plans for the Samal Island to be part of the tourist attraction in the Philippines are laid out for the next five to ten years. A world-class eco-tourism that will boost and enhance Samal Island. What is important of developing the area excite the tourism industry without disregarding the natural beauty of the island.
I can really see the potential of Samal Island for so many ways just when the local government will open its doors by providing transportation to the island, getting people to access the tourist areas.

MtApoStandard February 21st, 2008, 03:57 PM Davao to host BIMP-EAGA convergence meeting
By Cherry Marie E. Delfin
PIA Press Release
2008/02/22
The Convergence Meeting of the BIMP-EAGA Air Transport and Tourism Sectors on February 23 & 24 at the Marco Polo Hotel.
Airline executives, general sales and travel agents, tour operators, marketing teams and donor organizations, considered key players in the tourism and air transport, will be flying over to discuss possible joint efforts to help the sub-region expand and sustain viable routes as well as promote itself as a single tourism destination. BIMP-EAGA is the largest sub-regional cooperation in Asia covering about 1.5 million square meters of land.
According to Art Boncato, President of the Davao Tourism Association, one of the goals of the BIMP-EAGA convergence meeting on Saturday and Sunday is to explore "how to promote Mindanao as a (travel) route in BIMP-EAGA."
He specifically mentioned Davao and Zamboanga as areas that play important roles in improving air connectivity in EAGA. BIMP-EAGA's five exiting air routes already include Zamboanga-Sandakan served by Asian Spirit and Manado-Davao City served by Merpati Airlines.
Other routes that will be proposed in the upcoming convergence meeting include Davao City- Bandar Seri Begawan to be served by Pearl-Pacific Airways, Puerto Princesa- Kota Kinabalu to be served by SeaAir and Davao- Kota Kinabalu to be served by Cebu Pacific Air.
Boncato also emphasized that there is need for additional efforts in promoting Mindanao as a tourist destination since national efforts in tourism is centered in Visayas.
The Convergence Meeting of the BIMP-EAGA Air Transport and Tourism Sectors is a follow-up on the Memorandum of Understanding on the Expansion of Air Linkages signed last January 2007. This was a product of the 4th BIMP-EAGA Transport, Infrastructure and ICT Development (TIICTD) Cluster Meeting. The said memorandum granted Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights to all passenger and cargo services in six BIMP-EAGA member airports. The airports include Manado and Tarakan in Indonesia, State of Labuan and Miri in Malaysia, and Puerto Princesa City and General Santos City in the Philippines.
Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights give the airlines the "right to enplane traffic at one foreign point and deplane it in another foreign point as part of continuous operation also serving the airline's homeland." (PIA) [top]

Gab to push for one tourism brand in Eaga
Sunstar Davao
A CONVERGENCE meeting of leading players in the air transport and tourism sectors of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) is set to take place in Davao City to discuss possible joint efforts to help the sub-region expand and sustain viable routes as well as promote itself as a single tourism destination.
Some 30 key tourism and air transport players, composed of airline executives, general sales and travel agents, tour operators, marketing teams, and donor organizations, are expected at the Convergence Meeting of the BIMP-Eaga Air Transport and Tourism Sectors on February 23-24 at the Marco Polo Hotel.
Mary Ann Montemayor, chair of the BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council, said the convergence of decision makers from the airline and travel sectors of BIMP-Eaga is a much-awaited event that seeks to increase awareness on the developments in the BIMP-Eaga airline and tourism sector and promote appreciation of the opportunities and benefits of the sub-region's cooperation.
"We regard it is as a turning point where both sectors from hereon can continue to work towards achieving the noble goals of BIMP-Eaga," Montemayor said.
The two-day convergence meeting aims to come up with a list of joint programs and projects that will make Eaga routes more viable and come up with an appropriate tourism brand for BIMP-Eaga as basis for marketing and promotions.
It also aims to identify practical mechanisms to ensure continuing coordination and cooperation in the development of air and tourism industries of the sub-region.
Improving air connectivity in Eaga was given a boost with the granting of the Fifth Freedom Traffic Rights (FFTR) to selected Eaga international and regional airports as a result of the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on the Expansion of Air Linkages in January 2007.
This landmark agreement made by the transport cluster is expected to pave the way for the accelerated implementation of the Asean "open skies" policy.

Dads push creation of body to strengthen sisterhood pacts
Sunstar Davao
THE bid to create a local body that would map out plans and activities that will further boost Davao City's sisterhood agreements is expected to strengthen the city's business and international relations.
"The Davao City Investment Promotions Center (DCIPC) has performed well in promoting the city. But since it is more focused on investment promotions then there is a need to create a group that will be able to explore various linkages arising from these sisterhood agreements," said Councilor Susabel Reta, chair of the City Council committee on tourism.
Councilor Rachel Zozobrado, who is chair of the committee on international relations, has proposed a resolution creating a technical working group that would help follow up the sisterhood agreements entered into by the city.
"The body that would be formed aims to assist the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center in strengthening the city's international relations," Zozobrado said Thursday during a committee hearing on the matter.
"Most of the sisterhood pacts signed by the city have not really been explored and this is unfortunate considering that we can benefit from these agreements in terms of business, educational, and other linkages," she said.
DCIPC officer-in-charge Bobby Teo said there were plans to join a chambers' forum in Naning last year but the local chamber desisted since the schedule coincided with the Christmas holidays.
He said they are hopeful that more economic activities would be exchanged with Palau although it is a small market.
"Every time we have a sisterhood we just stop there," Reta said. "I hope that with the formation of a body that will be tasked to follow through on these agreements, Davao will have more economic and tourism transactions with the areas where have sisterhood agreements."
Zozobrado clarified that the proposed group will not take over the work of the DCIPC, but will instead act as a support group that will really look into what the city can do to explore these sisterhood pacts.
"Hindi lang naman business linkages ang makukuha natin if we explore these pacts marami pang iba," she added.

5 proposed air routes up in BIMP-Eaga gab
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao
FIVE proposed air routes in the BIMP-Eaga will be discussed in a two-day meeting of air transport and tourism players from the sub-region at the Marco Polo Davao, starting Saturday until Sunday.
These proposed air routes include the Kuching-Bandar Seri Begawan-Kota Kinabalu-BSB to be served by Air Asia; the Pontianak-Kuching-Bandar Seri Begawan to be served by Batavia Air; the Davao City-Bandar Seri Begawan to be served by Pearl Pacific Airways; the Puerto Princesa-Kota Kinabalu to be served by SeaAir; and the Davao-Kota Kinabalu to be served by Cebu Pacific Air.
The proposed air routes, if materialized, will be the additional routes to the five other existing routes in the BIMP-Eaga -- the Kota Kinabalu-Bandar Seri Begawan served by Royal Brunei Airlines and Malaysian Airlines; Bandar Seri Begawan-Kuching served by Royal Brunei Airlines; Zamboanga-Sandakan served by Asian Spirit; Pontianak-Kuching served by Batavia Air; and the Manado-Davao City served by Merpati Airlines.
"The discussion is beneficial to both tourism and air transport sectors considering the interdependence of both sectors in enhancing tourism and air passenger traffic across the sub-region," Virgilio Leyretana, chair of the Mindanao Economic Development Authority (Medco), said.
The two-day meeting is spearheaded by the BIMP-Eaga Transport and Tourism Clusters in response to the directive during the 4th BIMP-Eaga Leaders' Summit in Singapore last year.
The summit aims to undertake actions that will ensure sustainability of the existing air routes and establish more new sub-regional air connections this year.
Leyretana said strengthening tourism and air linkages has been strongly being pushed by the Arroyo administration in line with the effort to revitalize BIMP-Eaga as a key strategy for developing Mindanao and Palawan.
Eaga is home to the world's largest and oldest rainforests (Borneo and Papua), two of the world's richest marine biodiversity sites--which are the Sulu and Sulawesi Seas, and a string of world heritage sites such as Mt. Kinabalu and Tubataha Reefs.
With its rich natural endowments, Eaga offers diverse land and water-based tourist attractions. The tourism sector wishes BIMP-Eaga to be an exotic, premier, single culture, and adventure and nature tourism destination in Southeast Asia.
However, Eaga's tourism potentials remain untapped due to lack of air connectivity and promotion and marketing of destinations.

THE Davao City Baseball Cup, which will unfold its third edition on Saturday and Sunday at the University of Mindanao (UM) diamond, is a realization of 2002 Datu Bago awardee Tatsuo Uchida's dream of giving life to the children of Davao City through sports.
The Davao-born Japanese, a philanthropist and president of the Datu Uchida Development Foundation, graced the special edition of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum held at the Humanities Division Room F513 of the Ateneo de Davao University Jacinto campus Thursday.
Uichida was accompanied by coach Hidetoshi Suzuki, Japan Baseball Agency Inc. president Masashi Matsuzaki, DUDF sports director Yusuke Uchida, and DUDF member Ines Mallari of the Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School. Mallari acted as interpreter of Uchida and other Japanese guests present during the conference.
"I'm happy to be here. Davao is my birthplace. This is my hometown. We are doing our best to support the development of baseball in Davao," Uchida said through an interpreter.
"It is our goal to give the children life through baseball. Davao is in my heart," added Uichida, who donated money for the construction of the DSWD orphanage in Bajada, Lingap Center in Tugbok, Philippine-Japan Historical Museum and a portion of the PNJKIS.
He named former Davao City Mayor Elias Lopez and Dr. Dakudao as his friends during his elementary days.
Matsuzaki, who donated baseball equipment that he gathered from Japan for Davao teams, said: "We want to fulfill the dream of young baseball players in Davao. We want to make their dreams come true."
Uchida's grandson, Yusuke, said everything is all set for the Baseball Cup.

"I FOUGHT with desire." So goes the assessment of nine-year-old Jonah C. Covarrubias when asked how he won the gold medal in the Zero Category of the juniors' division of the recently concluded Carlos Palanca Jr. National Taekwondo Championships at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium in Manila.
"I also practiced hard," said Covarrubias of RSELC de La Salle who sported long hair that he was mistaken as a girl during the special Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at Room F513 of the Ateneo de Davao University (AdDU) Jacinto campus Thursday.
Post here your Valentine's Day greetings
It was the first-ever gold medal won by a Davao City jin in the juniors' division of the prestigious national event.
Covarrubias said his parents inspired him to get into taekwondo.
"My parents and I love taekwondo so I got into the sport," Covarrubias said.
Jonah said he began training at age six. He is now handled by veteran coach JunJun Te.
When asked about his experience during the tournament, he added: "I was nervous. But I got to befriend my opponent after our championship match (smiles)."
This young jin who idolizes Southeast Asian (SEA) Games medallist Japoy Lizardo of the RP national taekwondo team will compete anew in the upcoming Araw ng Dabaw sports festival. (MLSA)

Bollywood in Davao!

I AM fortunate to have met many students from the Indian community residing in Davao Medical School Foundation (DMSF).
The dean of DMSF, Dr. Petronilo Basa, and my college schoolmate Dr. Eva Aranas introduced me to the CEO of Transworld Education Academy in India, Dr. David Pillai, who brought in a lot of students (more than 70 to be exact) to enroll in a medical course in DMSF.
Still on their first few months, these young Indian nationals are fast adjusting to our culture with natural curiosity and sincere friendliness.
Their warmth and kindness (not to mention mischievous inquisitiveness) extended to me as they toured me in their dormitory. I took a liking to a few beautiful faces and actually invited them for a portrait shoot in our studio, complete with their costumes. In fact, most of them have attractive dark skin tones and expressive eyes and wide smiles.
Having spent their first Christmas here, they invited us to their Cultural Night (entitled Tarang), which involved a lot of, you guessed it, Bollywood performances.
Before I met them, I was kind of hooked on cable's Indian channel for years (okay, that and the Korean channel).
I remember how I liked to mimic their dance moves during parties, and I love watching their musical films. The students performed musical sketches, songs, cultural renditions, skits, and dancing involving the audience.
These days, they are very busy with their studies and are aiming to graduate in the finest medical university in the island.
So if you see a lot of young and fashionable Indian men and women around town these days, chances are they may be your future doctors. (E-mail writer at jojiealcantara@gmail.com or visit her website www.witerary.com.)
