Il Tenore February 24th, 2008, 02:09 AM Saturday, February 23, 2008 Travel show expected to rake in P22M sales By Joy Romares-Sevilla GLOBAL-link MP Events International, Inc., the organizer of the 2nd Davao International Travel and Lifestyle Exhibition, which officially opened Friday at the SM Entertainment Plaza in Davao City, is expecting to generate P20 million to P22 million onsite sales at the end of the exhibit Sunday. Patrick Tan, Global-link chief executive officer, said they are expecting higher onsite sales this year with the peso appreciation against the dollar. Tan said last year the 1st Davao Travel Show has generated a total of only P17 million. He also said the increase in onsite sales this year can also be attributed to the increase in the number of exhibitors who showcased variety of products and services. "Last year, we only had 80 exhibitors, this year, we have 90," Tan said. The 2nd Davao Travel Show officially opened Friday and will end Sunday. The event was attended by Ang Kian Guan, chair of the BIMP-Eaga Working Group of Air Linkages in Brunei; Wee Hong Seng, deputy chair of BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council in Sarawak, Malaysia; Berdardino Vega, deputy chair of BEBC in Manado, Indonesia; Yan Ai Lo, deputy chair of the BETC for Brunei; Lalu Malik Partawana, consul general of the Indonesian Consulate; and Koji Mitsuy, consul general of the Japanese Consulate. Also present are Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) president Simeon Marfori; Neni Abaca, president of the Small Hotels Association of Davao (Shad); Art Boncato, the chair of the Davao Cooperative Center for Visitors and Conventions; Angel Puentispina, the president of the Davao Tourism Association; Councilor Susabel Reta, chair of the Committee on Tourism and Beautification; Mary Ann Montemayor, chair of the BIMP-Eaga Tourism Council; Vice-Mayor Sara Duterte; DOT Southern Mindanao regional director Sonia Garcia; and DOT Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano, who was the guest of honor of the event. Duterte, in her message, meantime said the island of Mindanao has vast resources, which are still needed to be tapped. She said the City Government of Davao is working hard to establish the city as a gateway in the tourism sector. "For the tourism players, rest assured that we will support you for the realization of all your projects," she said. make it 23M!! Saberon-Abalayan SHEILA Mae Perez of Davao City became the 10th athlete from the Philippines who will hunt for the coveted gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics in August. She qualified to her second Olympics after she entered the women's three-meter springboard semi-finals of the "Good Luck Beijing 2008" 16th FINA Diving World Cup at The National Aquatics Center, also called the Water Cube, in Beijing, China. The 22-year-old Perez of the Tibungco Relocation Site garnered a total of 271 points in Saturday's semis that was topped by Chinese Min Xia Wu who amassed 377.85 points. China's Jing Jing Guo was second with 372 points while Australia's Sharleen Stratton came third with 336.90 followed by USA's Christina Loukas (330.75), Australia's Chantelle Newberry (314.85), Canada's Blythe Michaela Munro Hartley (314.10) and Ukraine's Olena Federova (305.95) who took the fourth to seventh spots, respectively. Trailing behind were Mexico's Laura Sanchez (303.30), Sweden's Anna Lindberg (303), Hungary's Nora Barta (302.45), Canada's Jennifer Abel (300.65) and USA's Kelei Bryant (300.60). Perez, who won the women's 3m springboard gold medal in the past 2005 Philippines SEA Games and 2007 Thailand SEA Games, proved she is stil the best among other Southeast Asia divers being the only one from the region who made it to the semis. Her stiffest SEA Games rival Mun Yee Leong finished at No. 29 in the preliminary that drew a total of 52 competitors. She made her Olympic debut in 2000 in Sydney, Australia. She also qualified to the 2004 Olympics in Athens but wasn't able to compete due to funding constraints. The women's 3m springboard finals and the men's 10m preliminary where Dabawenyos Rexel Ryan Fabriga and Jaime Asok were set to compete were still ongoing as of yesterday presstime. RP swimmers Miguel Molina, James Walsh, Ryan Arabejo, Daniel Coackley and Christel Simms with taekwondo jinds Tshomlee Go and Mary Antoinette Rivero, boxer Harry Taamor and archer Mark Javier recently won Olympic berths. Estremera Spider's web IT'S a long-running never-ending discussion between me and my dive cum debate buddy Carlos: the layout of roads in Davao City. Carlos being a driver and me as forever passenger, we have different outlooks on the roads that surround us in Davao City. Those roads that intersect at weird angles, merge without warnings and meet up again as one road after traversing another, and yet, no one's complaining. That is, no one is complaining loud enough. One very good thing that was brought about by this multi-million traffic signalization project was that the end of the center island of Ecoland Drive was chopped off. This wide center island, complete with trees, once slanted nonchalantly to the left (if you're coming from Ecoland) that would give any unknowing driver coming in from Quimpo a big jolt as he will surely run over the edge of the island. But it was there for years, until it had to be snipped off for better traffic management. What with the lights now electronically saying stop and go and no more traffic aides to guide a clueless driver along, it just had to be snipped and let the drivers figure out how to play patintero on wheels instead. This same road is very wide -- two lanes per direction or four lanes in all. For several years, this four-lane road suddenly becomes two lanes on just one side before the city finally cemented the other side just last year. Through the five years I have been living in that area, not one accident has occurred despite the fact that there was but one street light functioning and that light is way past the dark curve. Although there have been several scares complete with blinding headlights and blaring horns, there was not one crash and most interesting too, only one 'cross'. Then there's the patintero on wheels that you play when exiting from R. Castillo to join the main traffic along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Lanang or when you're turning to R. Castillo from Lanang. Oh boy... Another more intricate patintero is played at the junction of Bonifacio, Gen. Luna, Pelayo, and Camus Streets at the corner of Apo View Hotel. Which also baffles me because Camus Street is the one straddling the entrance side of People's Park and Apo View, how it twisted to become one street should be a pretty interesting history. And I bet you don't have any idea where Pelayo Street is and how it came to be where everyone thought was Legaspi Street. Carlos' favorite, however, is Jacinto and Jacinto Extension. Hear him try to make heads and tails of this situation and share in his baffled state. Jacinto Street as we all know is the one behind Ateneo de Davao University college campus. It crosses R. Magsaysay Avenue and hits Ponciano Reyes Street. The extension, however, doesn't "extend" in any way. It skips, slants, and proceeds. "And you call Crooked Road crooked?" he ranted. "What can be more crooked than Jacinto?" I'm just glad Duterte Street is now called Duterte Street, otherwise Carlos would be ranting about how it can ever logically be called Malvar Extension when you have to cross Quirino Avenue and cruise a few meters along Mt. Apo Street before you turn left to reach Malvar Street. And, have you seen that weird triangle right smack at the end of J.P. Cabaguio Avenue these days? Boy, my taxi driver had a scare of his life one night when he turned left from J.P. Laurel toward Cabaguio, only to realize that the road has been blocked and you have to cruise on further and make a tight almost u-turn to go to Cabaguio these days. Pretty, pretty queer arrangement. Very much like the way you have to turn right then clip left when you're coming down from Calinan at the Ulas junction on your way downtown. Plus! That wide street, I think it's called Ecoland West (the one where the condominium is rising) that hits right smack a center island of Ecoland Drive. Hmmm... And that's just a few of those interesting streets we have. There's also the D-shaped "rotunda" in that darn Apo-Mayon-Camus (again!) junction. Imagine... Apo View is Camus, Cosmopolitan is Camus, and People's Park is Camus. Now, try to make heads and tails of that. Carlos insists the city was planned not by engineers but by toddlers with crayons. I insist that the city is actually a lesson in mindfulness. For how can you not be mindful of everything you're doing when suddenly a road island is blocking your way? There's a similar situation along that road that goes into SM City, maybe that's Ecoland East (the one we call Times Mart) and Ecoland Phase 1's 6th Street (the one with Delongtes at the kanto). People here just love driving up to a center island. Oh, wheee! While we may disagree about the roads, we all agree that Davao with all its quirkiness is the best. Its queer roads and road network is but a reminder for everyone to sit up and pay attention; whether you're driving, on the passenger seat, just reminiscing, or talking about our hometown as we all Dabawenyos love talking about it. Oh, wheee! visit: http://saestremera.multiply.com http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/02/24/oped/stella.a..estremera.spider.s.web.html dinabaw February 24th, 2008, 01:19 PM ^^ hehe we discussed davao streets last night tapos i told them na bakit yang Jacinto ext. wala pang semento or ispalto man lang sinced 1970's etong yung Cabagiuo & J.P. AWESOME! daug February 24th, 2008, 04:06 PM by Chris Fabian WHEN he was in Davao, not a single entertainment bar wanted to hire him. Even local TV stations avoided to tap him in talent shows. Now, the ugly-duckling Dodong Pasagad is making wave anew in Manila. Not only performing in various first-class venues as opening act for Bossa Nova Queen Sitti, Dodong is starting to appear anew on national TV. Last Monday. he made his ABS-CBN debut performing with singing icon Rey Valera serenading host Bernadette Sembrano, who was celebrating her birthday in the early morning magazine show, Umagang Kay Ganda. "Lipay kaayo ko," Dodong texted TIMES yesterday. "Hinaot ko na padayon na ni." He is now handled by the team that also manages Sitti, the singer who helped him in going back to Manila. Dodong, a first batch finalist of NCCC's Star of Davao, said his manager, Garrie, is working to have him appear in other Kapamilya shows. The pitete Dodong is now regularly performing at Stone House and Star Tavern Bar, a place where Sitti and Tony Gonzaga used to perform. Next month, Dodong will be performing in one of the Casion branches in Manila. His UKG performance, where showbiz host Ogie Diaz called him Palos for his signature cap similar to that of Palos', was his first national TV performance since 2005. Dodong first broke into the national TV via the singing reality show, MTV Supahstar, in the music cable network MTV Pilipinas, in 2004. Among the contestants was the newcomer Sitti who would later became the Queen of Bossa Nova. The Davao boy ended as one of the runners-up in that contest. But his life story created an impact that the Kapuso network signed him for a Magpakailanman episode. The story, Bernabe Dodong Pasagad Story: Palimos ng Pangarap, was aired on March 3, 2005 with Eat Bulaga's Jose Manalo playing his role and veteran actor Eddie Garcia in support. The show earned a 28 percent rating compared to the 16% from the rival network. But after promoting his Magpakailanman episode in various Kapuso shows, Dodong's popularity faded as GMA7 did not give him any more project. Dodong returned to Davao where he again championed in joining amateur singing contests. He appeared in the local GMA channel but it did not last long when the variety show Singgit Davao folded up in 2005. He was no longer invited in the replacement show. Dodong tried his luck in ABS-CBN Davao but got no reply. His singing carreer flopped as organizers of local singing contests refused to accept him as contestant after knowing that he already competed in Manila. He applied in various entertainment bars, but was readily turned down even before he could perform. He cited that his "not-so-appealing" appearance could have prompted bar owners to reject him. With lesser singing contests in line, Dodong continued to roam the city selling brooms produced by a foundation that helped the blind.people. His father is blind. But when the operation of the foundation folded up, Dodong tried his luck in Manila with the encouragement of Sitti. He arrived in Manila last January 5, the same day that another Davaoeño, Ruben Gonzaga, won millions of pesos in the reality show, Pinoy Big Brother. Dodong said he wants to work with Ruben in future, a dream that might not be too far to reach. bongskie09 February 24th, 2008, 04:14 PM Wow! Seems like you really had a great time there sirs @dinabaw, @jhunax, @ibex... kakainggit kayo ^^ Thanks for sharing the beautiful pix. daug February 24th, 2008, 04:21 PM Davao artists pay tribute to Tsuno by Chris Fabian DAVAO musicians are set to stage a performance tonight (Feb. 25) in memory of Mindanawon artist Noe "Tsuno" Tio. Popong Landero and his band PLO, Yano, Gauss Obenza, and Regal8 are in the line-up of performers who will pay tribute to the drummer of numerous groups including Joey Ayala at ang Bagong Lumad, the Davao-based band that defined the ethnic character of Mindanao music in the 90s. The gig is set to start by 6:30 pm at Matina Town Square. Tio -- also a well known visual/graphic artist who brought his artwork to numerous album covers, t-shirts and prints -- passed away Feb. 11 in a Baguio City hospital where he underwent a brain surgery after suffering a massive stroke two days earlier. Born in Cebu in 1961, Tio was active in Davao music scene in the 80s before moving to Manila with Bagong Lumad in the 90s. He had been based in Palawan for nearly a decade, and was in Baguio for a commissioned work. Landero who organized the Davao leg of the tribute concert said "Noe is a true artist for peace." "We will be playing songs for peace in memory of our departed dear friend," Popong told TIMES. Popong recalled that he first jammed with Noe in 1985 in their band, Prisoners of the World Bank. Aside from performing in various entertainment venues in Davao, the musical group was also active in various rallies during the pre-Edsa Revolution days. In 1986, Popong and Noe joined Joey as among the performing artists of Bagong Lumad. Noe joined Joey when the group ventured in Manila in early 90s. Popong remained in Davao. In 1995, Noe and Popong re-grouped in Manila in the band named Landero for Popong's first commercially-released album, Kamay Ni Laan, which won the 1997 Katha Music Awards' Best World Music Album. Aside from Bagong Lumad and Landero, Noe also became drummer of bands like Tropical Depression, Enkantanda, Badjao Roots, Sisa, Village Idiot, Salasyos, Coco Jam, Sinika and Mitus Tribe. Funds from the charity concert will be used to pay the hospital bills (which reportedly reached P150,000) and for Noe's two young boys. In Manila, a similar charity concert held last week was participated in Joey Ayala, Cynthia Alexander, Bayang Barrios, Noel Cabangon, Tropical Depression, Color it Red, Sandwich, Imago, Cambio and The APO Hiking Society. daug February 24th, 2008, 04:22 PM ... but forgets to thank Davao supporters DAVAOEÑO Ruben Gonzaga, the Big Winner of Pinoy Big Brother Celebrity Edition 2, is now in cloud nine--and why not? He's finally received the other major prize --a condo unit -- from the most popular reality show in the country. The month-long wait was certainly worth it for Gonzaga, who was handed the key of his own condo unit in Chateau Valenzuela by Globe Asiatique officials on Tuesday, ABS-CBN reported. "Masaya po at laking tuwa ko na nakuha ko ang condo unit ko, may sarili na akong bahay dito sa Manila," Gonzaga told abs-cbnNews.com over a phone interview. Gonzaga was born and grew up in Davao City and his parents and kin still live there. He is currently staying with his wife and kids in a rented apartment somewhere in Metro Manila. Now he can't wait to move to their new condo unit, which reportedly cost P750,000. "Nandoon 'yung parang na-surprise ka na pa wow ka, kasi magkano din 'yung condo di ba? So talagang nandoon 'yung puso na nakuha mo 'yon dahil sa mga ginagawa mo dahil sa pagsubok sa buhay mo," he said. Gonzaga, who was dubbed as the "Komedyanteng Promdi" during his stay at the PBB House, said he is already making arrangements to move his wife, kids and other family members into their new home. Gonzaga reflected on how much his life has changed. And even if he became an instant star and millionaire, he still thanks the Lord for all the good things that has come his way. "Siguro unang-una sa lahat thank you kay Lord. Si Lord talaga sobrang love ako kahit alam kong marami akong kasalanan, talagang nandoon siya para sa akin," Ruben said. But Ruben forgot to thanks his Davao supporters. Samadhi board of directors headed by chair Popong Landero yesterday turned down the request of Madarang to swap post with vice-president elect Percival Tan. Madarang, used to be the bassist of Davao-based Afterfriends band, is currently out of the country. He is currently working as musician in a Europian luxury cruise. He is expected to return in Davao by March. Madarang, in an e-mail to the body, said he is willing to swap place with his vice president. In last week's election, he was represented by his brother, Sam, also a musician. But the board which voted him last week was firmed to have him as president. Pending Madarang's leave, vice-president elect Tan will temporarily assume his duty. Immediate past president and group founder Noli Bencio credited Madarang for the growth of Samadhi. One of Samadhi's active members, Madarang was a board member last year. He left Davao late last year for a job in Europe. The new set of Samadhi's officers will be inducted on March 2, with or without the president, at Kanto Bars. neyoneyo80 February 24th, 2008, 05:16 PM guess where? http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2144/2275372409_d5e4ca6229_b.jpg junax February 24th, 2008, 05:37 PM here it is, exclusive... testing of the new 405 meter (almost half a kilometer) zip line by the owner himself, sir edwin (feb. 24, 2008). longer than the 380 meter line beside it but twice the speed of the old one. next week, Sports Unlimited will feature camp sabros. maybe dyan castillejo will try out the new one. let's see. davao adventures are extreme. enjoy! the longest zip lines in the philippines. 6aBrwPyOvBQ WawaY[625] February 24th, 2008, 05:46 PM ^^ insular? davaoeagle February 24th, 2008, 05:48 PM ^ Absolutely the immaculate Insular! davaoeagle February 24th, 2008, 06:36 PM Monday, February 25, 2008 New investments in Mindanao up by 40 percent By Grace L. Plata Sunstar Davao FRESH investments in Mindanao for 2007 grew by 40 percent compared with 2006. In a presentation made by Mindanao Economic Development Council executive director Janet Lopoz for former president Fidel Ramos Friday, she said that from P5.16 billion in investments for 2006, the Bureau of Investments registered P7.23 billion for 2007. Region 11 had an equity investment share at P3.086 billion with 11 investment projects, which is the highest among Mindanao regions. Bulk of the investments is on power generation and mining followed by agriculture. Among the investors are Philippine-Japan Active Carbon Corp., Son-Shine Fruits Corporation, Southern Philippines Fresh Fruits Corp. Stargate Enterprises Corporation, Yoo Chang Co. Ltd. Inc., Four Seasons Fruits Corporation, Manila Herbal and Essential Oils Company, Damosa Land Inc., DMC Urban Property Developers, Sagrex Foods Incorporated, Western Feed Mill Corporation, and Hedcor Tamogan Incorporated. Lopoz also said that coconuts, bananas, nickel ores, and tuna are Mindanao's biggest export products. But Ramos disputed government's claim of economic growth, saying the country's economy is in fact "shallow, narrow and hollow." Ramos, in his statement to the region's officials, said it is "shallow" because the economic gains do not extend to the agriculture endeavors especially in Mindanao. "Over-all economic performance is not so good because of the loss of potential investments due to lack of reforms," he said. "We say that we have so many laws now. But these are unimplemented," Ramos added. Adding to the lack of reforms, Ramos said policies that are made at global scale and cannot be controlled by the government are also a deterrent for development. "We have to anticipate these changes. Be proactive and create safety nets for the crisis brought about by these changes," he said. For Mindanao to be more competitive, Ramos said there is a need to review its development roadmap and incorporate the changed international policies. davaoeagle February 24th, 2008, 06:38 PM Monday, February 25, 2008 City continues to attract more tourists, Durano says By Joy Romares-Sevilla Sunstar Davao AMID threats of political instability, Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said tourism industry and development are still not affected especially in Davao City. In an interview Friday, Durano said Davao City's stable peace and order situation continues to attract more tourists and visitors not only from other parts of the country, but also people of different nationalities. "We are optimistic that the tourism development will not be affected by threats especially here in Davao. For the past years, the city had a stable growing credibility in terms of peace and order," Durano said. As to his assessment, Durano claimed that the city has also a growing market in the tourism sector and that DOT will not be hesitant to focus its efforts to sell Davao in other parts of Mindanao and the rest of the Philippines. "We want tourism to contribute to the growth of the economy. Davao City has many tourism products and services that we can sell. It has scuba diving sites, the Philippine Eagle Center, the Mt. Apo trail, the water rafting which I myself should also experience," Durano said. Meanwhile, Durano asserted that DOT expects Filipinos to realize the importance of visiting other parts of the country. "With the Davao Travel Show 2008, we can compare the different destinations that we Filipinos also can offer. It is important for us to see the rest of the country," he said. The Davao Travel Show, which opened Friday and was concluded Sunday at the SM Entertainment Plaza, showcased all tourism products and services promoting Philippine tourism nationwide and to its neighboring countries. The exhibitors have also offered special tour packages and services at discounted prices made available only during the Travel Show period. davaoeagle February 24th, 2008, 06:39 PM Monday, February 25, 2008 BPO, telecom expansion expected this year: Neda Sunstar Davao THE regional office of the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Southern Mindanao reported that the telecommunications sector would continue to be a promising investment area this year. Nicasio Angelo J Agustin, Neda 11 regional director, told Sun.Star Davao that business process outsourcing (BPO), such as call centers and medical transcription services, will also boost the growth of the local economy. "The expansion of call centers outside Metro Manila is expected to continue despite the peso appreciation because of high global demand and availability of skilled and relatively cheaper human resources," Agustin said. He added that the number of subscriptions to cellular phone and Internet services is also growing and will continue to be so this year and the coming years. "The utilization of information and communication technology (ICT) has now permeated business and government operations in the rural areas," he said. "As the regional economy is further drawn into the global economy, the demand for ICT is likely to expand," Agustin added. In a BIMP-Eaga Cooperation Initiative brochure provided by the BIMP-Eaga Facilitation Center and the BIMP-Eaga Business Council both based in Sabah, Malaysia, it states that the sub-region is already a leading producer of key agriculture products like coconut, palm oil, livestock and poultry, and high value tropical fruits and vegetables. The sub-region is also a global center for the production and processing of important marine products such as tuna and seaweed as its major exports. In terms of tourism, Eaga is one of the world's leading eco-tourism destinations. Among its favorite tourists activities include cultural visits and adventure sports like diving, mountain climbing, game fishing, and trekking. Elisa P. Osorio Monday, February 25, 2008 The Philippine Star European leader in hotels the Accor Group is developing a multi-million peso bed and breakfast facility in Cebu. In an interview, Hotel and Restaurant Association of the Philippines chairman and president Humphrey O’Leary III said investments in the local hotel industry continues as evidenced by the interest of the Accor Group. In fact, O’Leary said the development in the industry is concentrated outside Metro Manila. “The investors are looking at building hotels in places outside Metro Manila,” he said. According to O’Leary, the emerging investment destinations are Surigao, Davao and Bohol. “We are very optimistic about Bohol. We think it may even overtake Boracay,” O’Leary said. Currently, the government has imposed a moratorium in hotel building in Boracay. O’Leary said the continued investment in the hotel industry proves that tourism in the country is not affected by the current political noise. He said visitors have learned to cope with the situation given the high occupancy rate enjoyed by hotels. Last year, the average occupancy rate is 77 percent. O’Leary said they are hoping to increase it to between 85 percent and 95 percent this year. The 3.5 million expected foreign guests will come mostly from new markets like Russia, Middle East, China and Korea. In fact, there is a shortage of hotel rooms, serviced apartments, villatels and condotels especially in major tourist destinations like Cebu, Boracay and Palawan. In Metro Manila, there are over 13,000 DOT accredited rooms. In Cebu there are close to 5,000 and 4,631 in Boracay. The average room rate for an overnight stay in Makati and Cebu are less than P10,000 while in Boracay, the average room rate is P10,343 a night. The Shangri-La Makati enjoyed the highest occupancy rate among all the Makati based hotels at over 90 percent while the rest average at the upper 80 percent. davaoeagle February 24th, 2008, 09:21 PM Business RP has 3rd fastest-growing air travel market By Mary Ann Ll. Reyes Monday, February 25, 2008 Air travel within the Philippines is the third fastest growing market in the world, after India and Mexico, industry data revealed. India’s domestic market grew by 33 percent, followed by Mexico at 27 percent, Philippines at 23 percent, and China at 16 percent last year. The Philippines domestic air travel market grew with almost 10.4 million travelers in 2007 compared with almost 8.5 million passengers in 2006. Gokongwei-owned Cebu Pacific (CEB) set the pace in the domestic market with a growth rate of 47 percent in terms of passengers carried in 2007, or from 3.034 million in 2006 to 4.46 million in 2007. Philippine Airlines (PAL) experienced a six percent increase, from 3.81 million to 4.033 million, while traffic for Air Philippines grew 21 percent, or from 653,175 in 2006 to 726,616 last year. Candice Iyog, CEB spokesperson, said domestic travel started booming when CEB introduced year-round low fares in 2005, forcing other local airlines to follow suit to be able to compete. “Our rapid domestic network expansion, aggressive pricing, year-round low fares, and new and growing fleet stimulated the market and introduced air travel to many first-time flyers,” she said. Iyog said CEB expects the growth trend to continue this year and beyond as the airline takes delivery of more new aircraft, which will be used to serve new domestic and international destinations. “The arrival of brand new Airbus and ATR aircraft will open up the Philippines and hopefully generate economic growth largely through tourism and trade in the process,” she said. Now in its 12th year, CEB has the youngest fleet in the Philippines. It flies to 12 and soon to be 15 international destinations with the addition of Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh, and Kaohsiung in the coming months. CEB also flies to 21 domestic destinations with Boracay (Caticlan) starting Feb. 29, 2008. CEB projects the number of passengers it will carry this year in both its domestic and international operations to exceed seven million, a 27 percent growth compared to the 5.49 million passengers in 2007. CEB will be leasing this year four Airbus 320-200 and acquiring six ATR 72-500s, bringing the carrier’s total aircraft to 25 by the end of 2008. It also has firm orders for 10 more A320s with option for another 10, as well as firm orders for 10 ATRs and eight options. The six ATRs arriving this year are part of the 10 firm orders for ATRs. CEB president Lance Gokongwei said the 10 firm orders for A320s will be coming in between 2010 and 2012 while the options may be availed of between 2012 and 2014. In the case of the ATRs, these will be coming in between 2010 and 2011. “By year 2013, CEB will have a fleet of 38 aircraft,” he said. In 2007, CEB carried a total of 5.49 million passengers, a 58 percent growth from the 3.47 million carried in 2006. Of the 5.49 million, 4.46 million were domestic passengers which is a 47 percent increase from the 3.04 million domestic passengers in 2006. The growth in the international operations was higher, with 1.032 million passengers carried in 2007 or a 141 percent growth compared to the 428,926 passengers in 2006. CEB now has the fastest growing domestic and international operations in the country, serving 32 destinations with a total of 44 routes, and with 906 flights a week to both domestic and international destinations. In 2007, Gokongwei said CEB had a 43 percent share of the domestic market while rival Philippine Airlines had 39 percent and Air Philippines, 11 percent. Last year, CEB had a load factor of 83 percent compared to PAL’s 79 percent and Air Philippines’ 73 percent. CEB also said it had the highest passenger numbers and seat numbers last year. “Our objective is to have an 80 to 85 percent load factor,” Gokongwei said. He likewise noted that the top seven growth contributors to visitor arrivals in the Philippines from Asia (Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, China, Hong Kong, and Korea) are destinations where CEB has started or expanded operations over the past two years. “CEB is entering the Vietnam market on June 6 and we expect this market to show substantial growth,” Gokongwei said. To further expand its reach, CEB also announced that it is setting up its third hub in the country in Davao this June. Its other hubs are in Manila and Cebu. There are also plans to put up another hub in Clark. Gokongwei also expressed optimism that since the country is only in its early stages of the “low fare” revolution, the market will continue to grow leaps and bounds. “We expect the domestic market to grow 13 to 15 percent a year for the next five years. We anticipate the market to double in the next five years,” he said. By Jun Ledesma Sunbursts JUN LOZADA, the star witness in the shady ZTE-NBN deal who's having a super road show in nearly all university campus in Matro Manila, is starting to be a veritable loose cannon I am starting to doubt the credibility of some of his testimonies. Never mind the fact that he and Romy Neri were in a secret huddle with Senators Ping Lacson and Jamby Madrigal where they bargained for a "patriotic fund" (in exchange for their confessions?). What startled me of late was his incredulous attribution to Davao's own Tomas Alcantara as an "oligarch." That Tomas Alcantara is one of the economic advisers of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo does not make an oligarch out of Tommy. The Alcantara family hardly fits the image of oligarch. The parents of Tomas are hardy pioneers and the children down to the third generation are molded in the model of the Conrado, the patriarch, and the amiable Ladislawa. The grand old man and his wife are known for their frugal lifestyle and they brought up their children not in the ways of the elite. They have lost much of their enterprises - cement and refractory companies. They too have downsized their plywood firm. It is utterly unfair and reckless for Lozada to dub Tomas a member of oligarchy or the ruling elite. Why begrudge the man for being consulted by the Palace on matters of his expertise? Will he too belittle the ascendancy of another Alcantara scion in Petron? Like Lozada, who thinks of himself as an IT expert, will it not be possible that Tommy and his brother Nick be experts in their respective fields too? The Alcantara children are far from being oligarchs. I do not know about Enrique Razon, Lucio Tan, and the Aboitizes. But the scions of the Alcantara family in Davao are definitely incongruous to what JLO suspects. The Alcantara made their fortune by their brain or brawn or both. You find Saranggani bangus, pompano, sea bass and tilapia in many super-markets in the US. It gives you a sense of pride that those marine products came from the Philippines and closer to home - in Saranggani province. Maybe Lozada is not aware that the Alcantara children and their grandchildren had invested so much on the marine enterprise before they were able to perfect the technology that enable them to export fish products in major markets in the world. They were the trailblazers. Many others follow. This definitely does not make them oligarchs that Lozada casually branded them to be. Even as I said this, this does not diminish my belief that Jun Lozada is telling the truth. The only reservation I had is his claim that he was kidnapped. I am in full accord with him that the ZTE-NBN deal is shady and that there are characters in and out of the government who cavorted with one another to make a quick buck out of it. They must be prosecuted and put behind bars. Former president Fidel Ramos put it succinctly. The investigation should be pursued and the guilty be convicted. The issue of ZTE-NBN corruption is just a blip. He likened the Philippines to a ship that is damaged -with a lot of holes in it. We Filipinos must unite and everybody must help to plug the holes and fix the ship. We should not allow this ship to sink for if it does we will all sink with it. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/02/25/oped/jun.ledesma.sunbursts.html paulkrps February 25th, 2008, 01:13 AM Monday, February 25, 2008 More privileges at MetroLifestyle ASIDE from its top of the line and world-class facilities, accessibility, programs, professional trainers and relatively cheap membership cost, there are other important things you can enjoy as a member of MetroLifestyle Fitness Center & Spa. We should not allow this ship to sink for if it does we will all sink with it. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/02/25/oped/jun.ledesma.sunbursts.html bakakon man jud ni si Jun Lozada.. paulkrps February 25th, 2008, 01:30 AM people with vested interests are jumping to his bandwagon. at any cost, they want gma out. everything is suspect and a circus. halata ra kaayo. Monday, February 25, 2008 City continues to attract more tourists, Durano says By Joy Romares-Sevilla Sunstar Davao AMID threats of political instability, Tourism Secretary Joseph Durano said tourism industry and development are still not affected especially in Davao City. I love reading this report... Business RP has 3rd fastest-growing air travel market By Mary Ann Ll. Il Tenore February 25th, 2008, 02:43 AM ^^I agree with you! hehehe! I've been to SM, Gaisano Ilustre, Chimes, Gaisano Mall, and one UK store(Ukay-Ukay) to no avail! The only place left was Victoria Plaza. So after buying my costume at Victoria Plaze, I headed to Akiko Japanese Restaurant to satisfy my Japanese craving. I like to dine privately and Akiko is one of those places where people from the outside can't see how big your mouth is. As I was seated, I noticed that I was a lone ranger...the only Filipino dining amidst a sea of Japanese diners. Ratio: 9 Japanese: 1 Filipino. I was outnumbered in my own land. It was good that "Dear Monica" was their station of choice. Monica will do. She will keep me company while I eat and at the same time listen to somebody else's love problem. The original plan was just to have their California Maki and Ika fry. The menu said that an order of California Maki(P220) would yield 12 pieces. Way too much for somebody on a solo flight. I asked the waitress if it would be possible to halve the order. She was really nice to ask the management about my request and it was granted! I found the rice to be a bit dry but was compensated by the taste of Japanese Kewpie mayonnaise. The taste is really different from the local brands we have. More eggy, more yellow, and the acid used is really different. The Ika Fry(P170) was remarkable! I was served with 3 huge pieces!!! I measured its diameter and it was approximately the same as the length of my index finger. And according to Mr. Ruler, my index finger is 3 inches long. I don't know if this is the usual size they serve or this was the only ones available in the market. Despite its size, it was tender with a crunchy coating. It was served with shredded cabbage and potato salad on the side. If you see "BEWARE OF DOG" signs then the mustard on the side should bear a sign, "BEWARE OF MUSTARD". You know how wasabe burns if you put too much, right? The effect will not have a great impact on your tongue but more on your sinus. The innocent looking mustard has a similar effect...it almost burned my nostrils!!! GAAAAK! I've been eating in this restaurant for years now. Even celebrated one of my birthdays here but this was the first time I ever ate here alone. And the first time I noticed the Japanese Spaghetti(P190). We usually eat pasta using a fork, but this time, it's chopsticks for the Japanese Spaghetti! Pasta with sauteed straw mushrooms, onions, garlic, Japanese chili, and a sauce I could not decipher. Gimme some garlic bread here! It was something new for me and so gooooooooood! I wasn't able to finish it since I was already full. What amuses me most are restroom signs...Cherries for women and for men...enter the banana room. Akiko remains to be one of my favorite Japanese restaurants in Davao City either dining with family, friends, or just by myself. (Nadecor), a mining investment firm and owner of the King-king Mines, one of the country’s biggest gold and copper mineral reserves located in Compostela Valley in Davao, disclosed yesterday that it has been taking the necessary steps to prepare itself for an Initial Public Offering (IPO) later this year including the additional exploration needed to improve resource base information on the King-king project. Nadecor President,Conrado T. Calalang, said "the company was also in the process of building its shareholder and management structures to assure the proper funding and success of the King-king project." The firm has so far drilled 276 holes equivalent to 89,599 meters. He said the Blackhorse Asset Management of Singapore is the latest institutional investor in the company. In line with management promise to its growing institutional investors to bring in professionals, Nadecor Chairman Jose G. Ricafort announced the appointment to the board of former trade and industry secretary Rizalino S. Navarro and geologist Jon Steen Petersen. In addition to bringing talented people in the fields of engineering and geology, Nadecor has taken in mezzanine investors to fund the resource verification process for King-king and other pre-IPO activities. Nadecor is optimistic that its current engagement of CitiGroup as financial advisors to the King-king project will yield a strong strategic investor that will help bring the Project to, first, Bankable Feasibility Study stage, and then, Development and Production stages. Ricafort noted that the entry of Navarro and Petersen will solidify the technical and operational capabilities of Nadecor as both the new directors have substantial experience in mine operations. Navarro is chairman of EEI Corporation (EEI), one of the country’s biggest construction firms and director of Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation, among many other positions he holds for the Yuchengco Group of Companies. In so doing, Davao clinched the coveted Governor’s Cup as overall Champion, trouncing teams from Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, Impasugong and Malaybalay of Bukidnon, Ormoc, Dumaguete and Bohol. The huge trophy was presented by the Governor of the Province of Cebu herself, the Hon.Gwen Garcia, in a Hollywood-style Awards Night at the Cebu International Convention Center (CICC). The Cebu Horse Show & Competition signaled the start of a new season in the Philippine Horsemen’s Federation competition circuit. Jose Salvador “Pete” Batu, President of the Davao Horse Club and his wife, Esperanza, led the power-packed Davao delegation consisting of nine riders, their families and other members of the Club. The whole event itself was unprecedented in its pomp and pageantry, evidently the result of full support given by the Provincial Government of Cebu and the local government of Mandaue City to the organizers, the Cebu Equine Owners and Breeders Sportsmen’s Association (CEOBSA). In the opening ceremony, Governor Garcia, the first woman governor of Cebu, led the parade on horseback from CICC to Mandaue City’s reclamation area, venue of the competition, with members of the various participating clubs following her on their steeds. Calesas, still very much in use in Cebu City’s downtown area, came in colorful Spanish era embellishments while drum and bugle corps marched along in cadence. At the venue’s grandstand, dancers in fabulous Filipiniana costumes opened the program in lavish style. The Awards Night held at the foyer of the CICC was no less spectacular. Before the overflowing buffet dinner table was opened, Cebu’s best classical singers began the evening’s program with an Italian prayer in song and followed it up with favorite Broadway hits. Male dancers in an American-Indian themed number preceded the dramatic entrance from a wigwam on stage by the lovely lady governor in long gown with matching Indian design, carrying the tall Governor’s Cup. One of Cebu’s top bands provided excellent dance music for all. The gutsy horsemen from the Visayas and Mindanao deserved all that, it seemed. The rain-soaked competition grounds proved to be a risky challenge for them, contending with sticky mud and dangerous mud pits in the 2-day event. Immediately on the first day, Davao showed its dominance in the sport by capturing first places in Show Jumping and Barrel Race. Kobi Troy Tan, 2-time Rider of the Year in Youth Division (2006 & 2007) and now elevated to the Expert Divison, led the Davao winners on board his Anglo-Arab grey mare Star Nile by capturing three first places, repeating the feat of his father, Andrew, last year and teammate George Walter Misa in 2006. Taking home a total of 14 individual awards, Davao’s trophy harvest consisted of the following: First Place finish: Show Jumping, Category B, Kobi Troy Tan; Show Jumping for Cause (Operation Smile), George Walter Misa; Barrel Race, Expert Division, Class A, Kobi Troy Tan; Auxiliary Division, Ronaldo Gonzaga from GWM Stables; Obstacle Race, Class A, Kobi Troy Tan and Royal Division, Dean Gonzales. Second Place finish: Show Jumping, Category A, George Walter Misa; Category B, Miko Gonzales; Barrel Race, Class B, Martin Ledesma; Youth, Nikki Boy Gonzales. Third Place finish: Barrel Race, Class A, George Walter Misa; Royal Division, Dean Gonzales; Obstacle Race, Class B, Martin Ledesma; Oval Race, Big Shot. The final day of competition, when the tricky Obstacle Race was held, spills and falls (and swimming in mud for rider and horse) was par for the course. Team Davao lost two first place positions this way, as their horses, at top speed, tripped and tumbled in the ever-deepening mud on the way to the finish line. Despite the heartbreaking losses, however, the Team made it to the top of the heap. And in the glittery Awards Night, it was Davao’s time to shine once again. As the name of the winner of the Governor’s Cup was announced with fanfare, a loud cheer thundered across the hall and fireworks lit up the night sky. gwm http://mobillacura.wordpress.com/2008/02/25/team-davao-wins-governors-cup-in-cebu/ davaoeagle February 26th, 2008, 06:13 AM ^ Wala pa siya kabalo sa protocol sa SSC... dinabaw February 26th, 2008, 06:43 AM Bankerohan Bridge U/C.... http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/3272/bankerohanbrrepairfg4.jpg (http://imageshack.us) photo by Ric Van Hori dinabaw February 26th, 2008, 07:00 AM http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/2199/dcxh4.png (http://imageshack.us) photo by paojus neyoneyo80 February 26th, 2008, 10:16 AM ito lang din ang iniisip ko about the current buyers ng mga condo dito, are these mostly out of town buyers? Andrei Fournier, trustee of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) in an interview said a consultation with landowners in Davao City will be held on February 28 at the Davao Convention Center from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. He said about 50 land owners and developers and other from the real estate industry had confirmed initially to join the consultation as they showed interest on investing in the IT sector. He said several IT players in Manila already are looking at the provinces but there is not enough of the area here that these investors can immediately use for their site. Davao City based on ocular inspection has still several vacant lots within the downtown area very ideal for IT Park or building location for call center operations, he said. "We thought of coming up with this consultation because Davao City is strong on this," he said. He said it is just a matter of letting these property owners understand the IT industry and sites and locations are very important in this industry. "The reason why these IT investors are looking at Davao because rental cost in Manila is expensive," he said. He said three or four years ago in Manila the rental cost was between P150 to P200 per sq m but now it went up to P500 to P600 per sq. m. The other reason for these investors to come to Davao is that they want to be close to the source of manpower. He said majority of the call center operators in Manila come from Davao and with their locating here would allow them to get as many workers. However he said the schools and universities here must work more for the training of these students in order for them to qualify to the job. He said with the proper training among students the absorption rate would also increase. "That is why when there will be recruitment for call center operators here they already made arrangements with the companies that teachers handle language proficiency be allowed to observe during interviews," Fournier said. He said this is one way of letting the teacher know through actual recruitment process the things that are being asked from the applicant, which Fournier said will also give insights for teachers what to teach their students. In a press statement released by DA it said that the consultation aims to gather inputs to a national food summit due in April to harmonize all initiatives to sustain the growth momentum of the farm sector over the next three years. The consultative session was held yesterday in Cagayan de Oro City at Grand Caprice Hotel and another one in Davao City on February 29 at the Apo View Hotel. The Cebu consultation will be on March 5 at the Crown Regency Suite. Two sessions were held earlier at the Clark Special Zone in Pampanga on February 19 and at the Great Eastern Hotel in Quezon City last February 22 for Metro Manila for Luzon and Metro Manila area. Agriculture Secretary Yap said the regional consultations are necessary for the DA to consolidate the main agriculture-related issues and concerns at the national and local levels, and then identify the government intervention measures plus food-sufficiency initiatives and budgets needed to keep the farm sector on its high growth course in the medium term. Expected to attend the national food summit are representatives of farmers and fishers organizations, industry and professional associations, sector groups like consumers and transport organizations, academe and regional development councils. The central areas of concern in the would-be summit cover five industry clusters namely, rice, corn, high-value commercial crops or HVCCs, livestock and poultry, and fisheries and agriculture. Yap said one major objective of the summit is to find ways of better harnessing local government units and the private sector as effective convergence points for the various national government initiatives concerning food security and job creation. Yap is in Dubai to sign a number of cooperation agreements with the newly reorganized Ministry of Environment and Water to finance a number of Philippine projects on agriculture and fisheries. Yap is also attending the Dubai Gulf Food Exhibition where the Philippine delegation is hoping to sell a variety of fresh, dried and processed fruit and food products. He is also hoping to invite more investors from Dubai to invest in various agricultural projects in the Philippines. One particular project that the Department of Agriculture is hoping to secure funding for is a planned P2-billion halal hub in Davao which will help the country secure a bigger slice of the estimated more than $200-billion global halal market. According to Agriculture Undersecretary Clayton Olalia, Yap is hoping to secure a concessional grant from Dubai to finance the first phase of the planned halal hub to be located in Marilog, Davao City. The site being eyed, Olalia said, is a 450-hectare property of the Department of Agriculture. The proposed halal hub is envisioned to have a modern slaughterhouse, a halal poultry dressing plant, cold storage facilities, a mosque and administrative facilities, and the necessary road infrastructure and utilities. The development of the first phase of the planned halal hub, Olalia said, is estimated to cost around $53 million or roughly a little over P2 billion. Olalia said the halal hub, would hopefully attract all related businesses to offer a complete one-stop area. The halal hub is part of the Philippines’s participation in the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Phillippines-East Asia Group Agreement) wherein the Philippines has been designated to take the lead role in halal poultry processing because of the Philippines’ continued bird flu-free status. neyoneyo80 February 27th, 2008, 12:22 AM  just want to post this before zzzzzzzzz  Davao City is RP's most competitive city http://www.goodnewspilipinas.com/docs/biz_progress/current/davao_city_competitive.html An Asian Institute of Management study reveals Davao City is the most competitive Philippine city, surpassing Makati, Marikina, Las Piñas and Muntinlupa, in terms of social and economic growth. Davao City, which ranked first in terms of the Cost of Doing Business, has also re-established its image as a convention city, boosting both foreign and local tourism. It has attracted migrants because of its semi-urban appeal—a dynamic business hub in a seemingly laid-back, serene setting. The opening of the Davao-Bukidnon-Cagayan de Oro road route and international flights to Indonesia (Manado) and Malaysia (Kota Kinabalu) allowed Davao to benefit from an increase in agricultural trade and influx of tourists. With this vital infrastructure in place, the city saw a surge of growth in its food, telecommunications, agribusiness and service industries. Light and industrial manufacturing enterprises, low and medium-cost housing and building and construction have also been on the rise. Davao is also perceived to be generally clean, peaceful and an ideal place to raise a family. The city, the capital of the Davao Region (Region 11), is strategically located at the Southeastern part of Mindanao. Bounded by Davao del North and the Davao Gulf on the east, it is the center of trade not only in the Southern Mindanao region and the whole of Mindanao but also in the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA). Davao at night The study said: "Among neighboring Asian city economies, Davao City has maintained its most competitive position in attracting fresh investments and in penetrating foreign markets owing to its resilient exports base, peaceful business climate, better quality of life and rich pool of skilled workforce." "With more than 1.2 million residents as primary market base, the city is conducive to business as evidenced by the presence of the top 200 companies in the area. From mere million-peso level investments poured in two decades ago up to 1992, investments peaked with a spectacular 63% growth in the succeeding years until the Asian financial crisis erupted in mid-1997," it said. davaoeagle February 27th, 2008, 12:28 AM ^ Thanks for proofreading the article kiddo! :) (Neyoneyo) neyoneyo80 February 27th, 2008, 12:31 AM ^^ no problem po sir davaoeagle  (btw, how did you know? ) |
