==
maayo unta kung diri himuon ang video... hehehe

Nonoy Tan is the former vox of WADAB. In case bata pa mo, Wadab was the very first Davao band na nag release of commercial album sa Manila in late '70 way ahead of Joey Ayala. Hits include kapag Tumatagal, Lalong Sumasarap.
He also composed songs for some movies (Bong Revilla's Bala at rosaryo (1990) and the Emmanuel H. Borlaza-directed The Sisters).
Other notable member of the band is Rey Magtotoo (composer of Eh Kasi, Bata sang by his daughter Jaime Baby). He also composed songs for movies like April Boy's Super Idol, Pulis patola, Bawal na gamot (it's a hit), Mundo man ay magunaw, Sambahin mo ang katawan ko, Sa aking puso: The Marcos 'Bong' Manalang Story and and others.

P2.3-B infra projects completed in Region 11
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Regional Project Monitoring Committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC) 11, tasked to monitor the implementation of foreign-funded and critical projects in the region, reported that a total of 1,121 nationally funded infrastructure projects worth P2.3 billion were completed in the region in 2007.

RDC 11 vice chair Nicasio Angelo Agustin told Sun.Star Davao that road improvement and rehabilitation region-wide accounted for the largest share in project investments at P691.8 million.

"Other nationally funded projects include ports rehabilitation and expansion in Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur worth P168.5 million, housing projects in Davao del Norte worth P30.6 million, and the construction of municipal water district and flood control and drainage both in Davao del Norte, and the resettlement projects in Davao City worth P15.1 million, P15 million, and P14.9 million, respectively," Agustin said.

Agustin said aside from the regular programs and projects of the national and local governments that provided critical support to socio-economic development and capital formation and improvement of governance, about 114 other infrastructure projects were also completed in the region.

"These 114 infrastructure projects were funded by the Official Development Assistance (ODA) and they cost P2.2 billion," Agustin said, adding that these projects include roads and bridges, irrigation systems, market and transport terminals, classrooms and school buildings, and others.

Agustin claimed that the projects also provided critical support to increasing the region's agricultural production, as well as efforts in poverty alleviation.

"The biggest was the rehabilitation of the Monkayo-Tagum road section, which costs P1.5 billion," he said.

Among other projects funded by the ODA are the construction of communal irrigation projects in Compostela Valley and in Davao Oriental worth P218 million; construction of Mati Public Market in Davao Oriental worth P80 million; road rehabilitation projects in Igacos, Compostela, and Davao Oriental worth P56 million; region-wide Upland Development Program which cost P43 million; construction of Panabo City Transport Terminal worth P38 million; construction of farm to market road in Davao Oriental worth P13 million; and the procurement of heavy equipment for the local government unit in Davao del Sur worth P13 million.

Holiday Gym & Spa conquers Mt. Apo

HOLIDAY Gym and Spa, Davao City's premier health and wellness center, conquered Mt. Apo in a trek from February 29 to March 2.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The experience left the climbers in awe. Here are some of their reactions:

"My husband and I have a great passion for exploring and adventure. In our travels, we've seen the most amazing places and have tried a lot of extreme activities but I must say that conquering Mt. Apo is one of the most profound experiences I've ever encountered. I've done it five times and will continue to do so despite the difficulty. Why? Because it is the best food for my soul." --Jackie Dizon.

"Being a first timer, leading the pack, carrying my own 15-kilo bag on my back and conquering Mt. Apo. Awesome" --Dodjie Batu.

"My Mt. Apo experience is indescribable, at first I hesitated to go due to health problems but I wanted to challenge my self because I believe this will be great experience. I am so proud of myself and I am a stronger person now after the climb. I made it! Thank you, Lord! I could not have done it without your help." --Cecile Go.

"Incomparable adventure! Climbing Mt. Apo was a great experience together with fun, wonderful, adventurous party people giving you courage and laughter. An experience I will never forget. It taught me to be more persistent breaking through all difficulties and obstacles conquering Mt. Apo. It is the same as living and being able to stand adversities in everyday life with true vigor. These are all just other mountains I have to climb." --Anthony Chuang.

"What a beautiful experience, surreal! A feast to the senses! Each portion of the climb had its special memories. Trekking through the forest, amid tall, moss-covered trees and stones, was magical. I literally forgot getting tired while I was soaking it all in, then leaving it behind. We went out into the open among a sea of boulders that we scaled on our upward travel to the peak. Now, this was quite exhausting but it was compensating since the view got better as we climbed together. Thank goodness, we were blessed with cool weather. I did not doubt that I would reach the peak but still I was amazed when I reached the peak. It was a great feeling to have actually done it and experience the beauty all around and below me. I am so grateful to have traveled to the heights of Mt. Apo with family and friends. They were a great part of my successful climb." --Amy Diano.

"Mt. Apo is beautiful, both from a distance and to climb. The people, the climb, the secrecy, the overall experience was phenomenal. I had one of the most amazing weekends of my life. It was really challenging but a rewarding trip. I nearly gave up halfway but watching the sunrise from the highest peak in the Philippines was worth the climb. Mountain climbing parallels many of our life experiences. Bad weather, obscured vision, tiresome inclines, unexpected detours, elements, all these contribute to the adventure and difficulty required to reach the higher heights of our curiosity and better appreciation of life. I would do this again." --Toti Cabanog.

"It was my first time to climb Mt. Apo that's why I was very excited. During the trail, there were a lot of obstacles. It was a very challenging experience. When I reached the peak, I cannot express my feelings. I cannot imagine reaching the highest mountain in the Philippines. I burned a lot of calories, that's why I lost two kilos of my body weight. It was an unforgettable moment in my life, the weather is cold, it was like sleeping inside the cold storage room and I needed a human blanket. I thank God for the safety and guidance for without Him, we can do nothing and also to Ma'am Cecille Co and the rest of the team." --Dindo Amper.

"I'm a powerful woman." --Yangyang Hamsin.

Gil Bumanlag to exhibit abstract paintings
By MARILYN C. ROQUE

In time for the Araw Ng Dabaw festivities is the scheduled opening of the Gil Bumanlag Art Gallery, home of modern contemporary abstract paintings, on March 16, 2008.

A self-taught abstract painter, Gil discovered his talent while looking for paintings to hang around his home. When he could not find any to satisfy his standards, he created his own art works and realized he was good at it, and friends offered to buy them.

This registered nurse whose hobby is visiting galleries has finished more than fifty abstract paintings, enough to fill up his own gallery.

Having an adventurous spirit, Gil Bumanlag dared to establish his career as a painter in Davao City with his wife, Dr. Aileen Bumanlag. This couple did not even know what Davao City looked like when they came. But looking at their newly furnished gallery-clinic, we got the feeling there will be no other place for them but Davao City. Besides a harmonious husband and wife relationship that we can see, they have combined their talents as well. The unique combination of colors in the gallery-clinic makes patients and art collectors feel relaxed and entertained.

Dr. Aileen is a graduate of the College of Medicine at the UERM. She is a dermatologist who enjoys serving the community because these days not only women are conscious of their skin and personal appearance, but even the males avail of her services. Aileen mentioned ordering a state-of-the-art machine which is scheduled to arrive late this month which is non-invasive and will definitely be the favorite of many who want to see their skin glowing and healthy.

Robinsons Land allots P13.9B for capex
By Zinnia B. Dela Pena
Monday, March 10, 2008

Robinsons Land Corp., the real estate arm of the Gokongwei Group, is spending P13.9 billion over the next two years for the construction of new malls, office buildings and housing projects and for landbanking.

In a filing with securities regulators, RLC said 40 percent of the programmed capital expenditures (capex) will go to new malls which will rise in Dumaguete, Bulacan, Tagaytay, Davao Tacloban and General Santos as well as for the refurbishment of existing ones to keep up with the intense competition in the industry.

The company said it has opted to veer away from building supermalls and to focus instead in building new medium-sized shopping centers that are strategically located.

About 30 percent of the capex will be used to build new offices catering to the busines process outsourcing industry. The company has started construction of Robinsons Cybergate Center Tower 3 which will have a gross floor area of approximately 56,000 square meters.

Plans are also underway for two buildings, one within Robinsons Cybergate Center, and another in the Ortigas Center which will add a combined leasable GFA of 90,000 sqm.

RLC recently acquired its fourth property in Fort Bonifacio Global City along the millionaire’s row at Mckinley Drive and Fifth Ave. It plans to develop the 1,188-square meter property into an upscale twin-tower residential project.

The company also acquired five hectares of land with a 170-meter beachfront in Mactan, Cebu which will be converted into a landmark five-star condo-resort.

Other projects of RLC in Bonifacio Global City are the 38-storey Fifth Avenue Place, the 43-storey McKinley Park Residences, and the newly launched 28-story The Fort Residences.

RLC’s high rise buildings division had a portfolio of 20 residential condominium projects, three of which had been substantially completed and 17 projects are under various stages of development.

The company believes that the potential for growth is in the affordable to middle-cost high-rise condominium developments and in the middle-cost to high-end horizontal residential segments of the market.

As of Sept. 30, 2007, RLC’s housing and land development division had 26 ongoing projects, of which four had been completed while ten had been substantially sold.

RLC plans to launch nine new housing projects which will offer a total of 3,472 units. These include Monte Del Sol, Costa Verde, Forest Parkhomes North, Hanalei Heights, Wellington Courtyard, Brighton Parkplace, Blue Coast Residences, Brighton Parkplace North and Montclair Highlands.

It intends to develop at least three housing projects annually.

To expand its reach, RLC has signed joint venture agreements with several landowners for the development of properties totalling 37.8 hectares.

These properties are located in Cagayan de Oro, Davao and Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

As of end-September last year, RLC had 19 shopping malls, comprising six malls in Metro Manila and 13 malls in other urban areas throughout the Philippines, with a gross floor area of approximately 1.279 million square meters.

condo = nice view, house = status symbol. kahit kasi makuha mo pa ang pinakamahal na penthouse ng isang condo building, parang one of the tenants lang ang status mo sa building na yon, and of course you'll miss the jogging lanes, wide open basketball courts and clubhouses kahit sabihin pa na some condos are offering alternatives to those amenities. but if you got a 3 storey mansion with a huge garden, large car park, olympic size pool, inside a very posh village, iba ang dating mo eh. if you can have both, yun ang astig.

madali lang yan pagpiliian kung beach person ka lang or mountain person only. pero kung beach and mountain person ka like me, the best alternative is a house above the mountain near the beach like CANIBAD... yahooo ganda.

kaso...ang daming babayaran...misc fees, realty taxes, home owners assoc fee...huhuhuh and mas maraming amenities, mas maraming babayaran. So lets say u bought a condo for 1.5 Million, on top of that, may monthly dues ka pa na around 5k++. magkano ba per sqm ang misc fee jan sa mga condos in Davao City?

Anyway, I find the Dabawenyo investors lucky. Kasi, ang lapit ng mga residential estates sa downtown. For local residents, Talomo, Toril, or Mintal may be far....pero ang lapit na nyan if u compare it to the residential estates here in Metro Manila. We bought a property here sa Cavite. For Manilenos, ang lapit na daw ng project na yun, but for me, ang layo nya :( Hay...i want to have my own place jan sa Davao...sa Positano :D kc overlooking sa downtown diba?

Neyo...serious question po..are u already aware of how much your misc fees per sqm would be? the home owners association fee? and other fees? per month on top of the around 2 Million pesos cost of the unit?

Kc, when one purchase a condo, the agent would only discuss the total contract price. Did your agent discussed the other fees that u have to pay per month on top of the total contract price?

You mind if i ll ask how much? the exact figure? thnx. Well i agree with the other plus plus except the prestige. These days, condo is just another option if one wants to reside near the business districts. I think gone are the days that condos are for rich as some condos now are being offered through Pag-ibig. The Bolton condo project would start its preselling in the second quarter of this year. Apat na condo buildings would soon fill the housing needs of Dabawenyos. But i wonder, how much ba ang per sqm fee jan satin? if sa Ortigas its 50 pesos per sqm and sa makati is between 80 to 100 pesos per sqm, so magkano jan?

Also, to those who owns condo units outside or within Davao City, san ba ang mas magastos and maraming fees? owning a condo or a house? We have a friend here who is paying 25K for the fees alone per month on top of the amount that they paid when they purchased condo and other utility bills. I really hope na mas mura ang fees natin jan sa Davao.

around 5 digits yata, kuya tj.... i'm not sure, i'll let you know asap

it's still is in the Philippine set up... otherwise (like abroad) it is not. this is the same thing with owning a car in the philippines, only a few "privileged ones" can afford... :)

majority of those who buy condos in the philippines btw are not residents there, most are ofws or based abroad (see related thread ;)

we must not forget.. our economy is still lagging behind the asian neighbors and that is why we can't boast this kind of argument, .... wait till we become an industrial giant (hmmm kailan pa kaya  ), and wait till the OPTION is mass-based and not an "elite" one.... ;)

With the depreciation of dollars, local developers are now looking at local buyers. Kaya nga most of the recent condo projects now are also being offered via Pagibig or other inhouse financing (see related thread). I sell condos din po kuya neyo and i say that majority of my buyers were not the so called elite ones but just average pinoys. My market is in Cebu and Manila...but I just dont know how much the extra fees are if one would purchase a condo in Davao. :( An average of 20K a month to 35K a month is kayang kaya by an entrepreneur or an executive in Makati. Even a mere callcenter agent working in big companies can afford such monthly fee ;)

Also, if you are unaware, there are new condo projects here in QC being offered to the so called masses. Take Victoria Station as an example. ;)

m. Shinyo Maru – On August 20, 1944, 750 American POWs who had been on work details near Lasang, Mindanao were loaded into the cargo holds of a freighter marked only as "86" for transport to Manila. The 3,801 gross ton Japanese Army transport No. 86, Tateishi Maru, made a slow and devious trip arriving at Zamboanga, Mindanao on September 5, 1944. The POWs remained in the holds of transport No. 86 for two more days. On September 7th, the POWs were moved to the Shinyo Maru. The Shinyo Maru left Zamboanga in convoy on September 7, 1944; however, the USS Paddle was waiting near Sindangan Point, Mindanao where it torpedoed the Shinyo Maru late on the same day. The ship sank quickly, trapping most prisoners in the holds. Others were executed by the guards during the scramble to evacuate the ship or while in the water awaiting rescue. Eventually 82 survivors swam to shore to be rescued by Filipino civilians and hidden onshore until they could be evacuated by submarine. (See Rice and Salt by John McGee for details of the sinking and the evacuation of the 82 survivors.)
The Shinyo Maru was an antiquated freighter pressed into Japanese service after its capture at Shanghai in 1941. It was built as the Clan MacKay in Glasgow, Scotland in 1894, and was much smaller than the ships listed in paragraph 1 above (312 ft. long by 40.2 ft. wide and only 2,600 tons). The following photograph shows the Shinyo Maru when it was still the Clan MacKay. We are grateful to Roger W. Jordan and Ralph J. Lotito for identifying the Shinyo Maru. Photograph courtesy of Capt. John Bax and http://www.merchantnavyofficers.com. The Clan Line pages can be found on their history link.

Nothing comes from Nothing?

Kuya Neyo....certain contact centers here in MM such as VXI, 247, and HSBC pay from 30k++ and up excluding incentives or commissions. Our Team Managers have an average pay of 60K to 100K a month excluding the incentives. Our Project Directors earn an average of 150K and up. That's why, not to brag but WE, in the contact center industry along with successful young entrepreneurs, IT professionals, and professionals from other industries in our country are the next target market of this condo craze. I for one is interested to get my own unit in Davao. That's why I am asking if you are already aware of the fees so I can weigh things out whether I'll invest my hard earned money in a small and boxy accomodation (condo) or in a house and lot. :okay:

I recognize the OFWs capacity to purchase a condo. But let's not discount the professionals working here in our own country as well. Nothing comes from nothing? hmmmm ur referring to us professionals left in the Phils now? Huh! I dont think so!

i'm so happy for them  but still sad, that we are talking only of managers here or senior employees.... a great majority of the phil. middle class/working class still cannot afford kuya

AMANAK is a proud Davao band. They won the HUNI, beating no less than Popong, in the 2006 edition. The band is composed of father Cinti Fabella and daughter Twinkle, hence the name AMANAK.

HERE IS A VIDEO OF DODONG PASAGAD doing A tom jones. the video is not so good, pero bear with it na lang. Dodong is from Davao, now performing in a bar in QC where Sitti and Toni Gonzaga used to perform. He recently guested in Umagang Kay Ganda. Palaging siyang front act ni Sitti sa kanyang mga concert (they have the same manager). His life story was featured in Magpakailanman and got a high 28 percent rating.

Domestic passenger traffic in Davao decreases in 2006
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao

THE regional office of the Department of Tourism (DOT) recorded a total of 1,480,408 domestic passenger traffics at the Davao International Airport in 2007.

In a report submitted by the DOT Southern Mindanao to the regional office of the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) Southern Mindanao, it said the figure was 1.5 percent lower compared to traffic volume in 2006.

On the other hand, the number of international passenger traffic increased by 60.6 percent from 33,663 in 2006 to 53,856 in 2007.

Neda-Southern Mindanao said extensive tourism development; promotion of lower fare rates; and the opening of additional international flights triggered the increase in international passenger traffic.

As of December 2007, Neda said there are 11 international flights per week from Davao City for Incheon in Korea, Manado in Indonesia, Hong Kong, and Singapore.

The domestic cargo traffic was also up by 9.6 percent, which reached 45.5 million tons in 2007. International cargo traffic, on the other hand, reached to 15,455 tons during the year.

Meanwhile, Davao City has the largest number of tourist arrivals last year with 81.3 percent, while Igacos, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley got a share of 5.7 percent, 3.7 percent, and 1.3 percent, respectively.

Davao del Norte and Davao del Sur both had 3.1 percent tourist distribution last year.

Gabi: The uncrowned 'Prince'
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
Sunstar Davao

WHEN Manny Pacquiao climbs the ring this Sunday (Manila time) to fight Juan Manuel Marquez of Mexico in an attempt snatch the latter's World Boxing Council super featherweight crown in Las Vegas, Filipino fight fans back home will be glued to their television sets and giant screens to cheer their beloved hero.

In Davao City, boxing fans will not only be rooting for Pacquiao but also go all out for their local hero Diosdado Gabi, the little boxer who will also be fighting in the card dubbed "Unfinished Busioness."

The 28-year-olf Gabi, called the "Prince" and a fisherman's son from Lasang, is in for a tough fight against 22-year-old Mexican wonder and undefeated Abner Mares.

What make Gabi's fight significant is that he is on a four-match win streak and will see action on the founding anniversary of Davao City.

March 16, Sunday, marks the 71st Araw ng Dabaw and the celebration will culminate with a grand parade scheduled to start at 7 a.m.

City Hall will also install a wide screen at the Almendras Gym to allow the people of Davao watch the Pacquiao--and Gabi's--fight for free on pay per view basis to be shouldered by the local government.

Gabi has a record of 30-3-1 with 21 KOs, while Mares will enter the ring carrying a slate of 15-0 with 9 KOs.

Gabi, a southpaw and fighting in the bantamweight division, once fought for the world flyweight crown against Armenian-born Australian Vic Darchinyan, but lost the fight via an eight-round stoppage.

Since that defeat, the Davao boxer is on a hot streak having won his last four fights. He stopped former champion Mauricio Pastrana in the first round, scored another first round stoppage over Felipe Rivas, posted a second round TKO win over Antonio Diaz and won by decision against Jose Angel Beranza of Mexico.

A victory over Mares will put Gabi a step closer towards another world title shot.

Figaro opens 2nd coffee shop at SM
Sunstar Davao

TWO years after it set up its first coffee shop in Davao City (at Chimes Specialty Store on Sales St.), Figaro will open its second outlet at SM City Davao on Thursday, March 13.

Coffee has become a way of life in Davao as evidenced by the number of coffee hangouts in the city. Dabawenyos have warmed up to coffee shops to network for business or socializing with friends, very much like the coffee lifestyle in the prominent cities around the country.

With the opening of a second Figaro coffee shop in SM-Davao, shoppers will have a new place to meet up with friends or cool their heels after shopping.

Figaro started as a hobby among coffee lovers that soon became a growing business. In their many travels, the founding partners enjoyed coffee most in European cafes, which was the inspiration behind Figaro.

Their dream was to share the "fine art of coffee" among the Filipino customers, which they soon achieved with their hands-on involvement in the cafe.

Figaro opened its first coffee kiosk in 1993, way before the international chains came into the country. Figaro has become famous for its freshly brewed coffee, espresso-based classics and iced coffee concoctions.

It started franchising in 1998 and now has expanded to over 60 stores in the Philippines including a flagship store in Shanghai, China.

Figaro prides itself with its coffee beans sourced from farms around the coffee growing regions of the Philippines: Benguet, Ifugao, Cavite, Negros, and Bukidnon are key sources of coffee.

The coffee beans are roasted and blended in select batches so they remain consistently fresh before they are delivered to Figaro coffee shops. This is the secret to the good coffee that Figaro is known for.

With the opening of a second Figaro at the Ground Floor of SM-Davao, Dabawenyos can look forward to more pleasurable shopping and great conversations over good, fresh coffee, and a delectable selection of pastries.

Nograles elected Lakas President
By BEN R. ROSARIO
Manila Bulletin

Speaker Prospero Nograles vowed yesterday to lead the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas- CMD) and help sustain economic development and ensure political stability as the mandates of his presidency of the country’s most dominant political party.

During the Lakas-CMD national directorate assembly held at the historic landmark Manila Hotel, Nograles was unanimously elected president of the party in a replay of his election last month as speaker of the House of Representatives. In both instances, he took over the positions of former Speaker Jose de Venecia Jr. of the fourth district of Pangasinan.

De Venecia was elected the party’s president emeritus which is one of the 38 new positions that the national directorate created as part of its reorganization.

The former House leader did not attend the meeting which saw top party leaders re-affirm the leadership of party chairperson, President Arroyo, and their support to her administration.

The expression of support came amidst De Venecia’s unrelenting criticisms in connection with reported anomalies in Arroyo’s administration.

Over 100 national and regional party executives agreed to adopt preparations for the national elections by creating an electoral consultation committee to assist the national electoral college in formulating the criteria and process for selecting official party candidates.

A special committee was likewise formed to study proposals for the merger of Lakas-CMD with other political groups, particularly the Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino, a party co-founded by Arroyo.

Also adopted were resolutions "reaffirming the party’s unwavering and wholehearted support for the Arroyo administration" and "committing to put Lakas-CMD in the forefront of efforts to sustain the momentum of national economic growth and progress."

Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri, party secretary general, admitted that the proposed Lakas-Kampi merger would be a difficult party decision but stressed that this is "the president’s wish and directive."€

"It’s a journey of a thousand steps and we are in step 1. But we are coming into it in good faith, " Zubiri said.

Presided over by executive vice president and Quezon City Mayor Feliciano Belmonte, the national directorate meeting elected a total of 19 senior party officials to newly-created and vacant positions after a motion to declare all positions vacant was approved by the body.

Aside from Arroyo, Belmonte and Zubiri, re-affirmation of confidence were declared for former President Fidel V. Ramos as chairman emeritus; Davao Oriental Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario as treasurer; former Senator and Environment Secretary Heherson Alvarez, vice president for Luzon; Secretary Raul Gonzales, VP for Visayas; MMDA Chairman Bayani F. Fernando, VP for National Capital Region; Maguindanao Rep. Simeon Datumanong, VP for Muslim Communities; and Puerto Princesa City Mayor Edward S. Hagedorn, VP for environmental concerns.

Newly-elected were Senators Ramon Revilla Jr. and Manuel M. Lapid as senior vice presidents; former Surigao del Sur Rep. Prospero Pichay, vice president for Mindanao; Noel Onate, VP for finance; Paranaque City Rep. Eduardo Zialcita, VP for recruitment and membership; Presidential Legal Counsel Sergio Apostol, VP for legal affairs; former Secretary Hernando Perez, VP for policy research and development; Gov. Loreto Leo S. Ocampos, VP for local governance; Binalonan Mayor Ramon Guico Jr., VP for rural development; Solicitor General Anges Devanadera, VP for justice and human rights; Fernando Pena, VP for special projects; Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel Arroyo, VP for services; Secretary Edgardo Pamintuan, VP for sectoral affairs; Lanao del Norte Gov. Mohammad Khalid Q. Dimaporo, VP for youth affairs; and Chairman Francis Xavier L. Manglapus, VP for Christian-Muslim democratic concerns.

In accepting the party’s presidency, Nograles said he will try to fill in the "gigantic" shoes of De Venecia who co-founded LakasCMD in 1992 with former President Ramos. He called on partymates to respect the current "political posture" of his predecessor, noting that most may have disagreed with it.

Through his lawyer, Raul Lambino, De Venecia sent word to the party that he was resigning as president to give way to whatever decision that they may have reached yesterday in connection with his continued disagreements with Arroyo.

Lambino clarified that the position of president emeritus was not an "imposition" made by De Venecia but was offered him by party leaders.

In his acceptance speech, Nograles said that under his leadership, the party will focus on an improved economy to make sure that the benefits will be "felt by the poorest of the poor."

He likewise underscored the need to prepare fully for the 2010 elections by making efforts to enlarge political alliances and consolidate political strength throughout the country.

Firing up Freestyle’s music
By Isah V. Red
Manila Standard Today

Everyone knows how in April 2005, vocalist Top Suzara left Freestyle unceremoniously. Fans of the Davao-grown pop/rock band nearly lost hope, thinking it was the end of the road for Jinky Vidal and the rest of the remaining musicians.

Quick thinking and decisive management aborted what could have been a disastrous situation for the band. Two vocalists readily agreed to become Suzara’s replacement—Mike Luis and Joshua Desiderio.

The two singers—although they don’t want to be credited for saving Freestyle from eventual disbandment—were just too happy to play and perform with one of the more popular bands in the circuit. Surprisingly, they easily melded with the rest of the band, and even the fans didn’t seem to miss Suzara at all.

While the band had to explain to the audience the absence of Suzara, the fans appeared to have been prepared for the eventual departure of Suzara, who had always wanted to go solo.

A year after Suzara left and with the two singers on board, Freestyle released in June 2006 Freestyle Live @19 East. The CD turned gold, and Pari certified it.

In February 2007, a DVD containing 20 songs of the video recording of Freestyle Live @19 East was also released. And in May of the same year, Freestyle went on a tour of the US performing mostly in cities off the West Coast with fellow Artistation band, Side A.

Late last year, Freestyle came out with their latest album, Back at the Yard, their 10th release and their fifth studio album of original songs. Produced at the backyard studio of drummer Gerd Banzon, hence the title, the album’s 16 tracks have 13 original tunes written by Mike Luis, Joshua Desiderio, Jinky Vidal and the band’s newest member Rommel de la Cruz.

Viva Records requested the group to include three covers—“Maybe,” “Is It Over,” and “I Will Still Love You.” Carrier track is “Dati,” a creative collaboration of Jinky and Joshua. Other tracks are “Tameme,” “Naglalambing,” Muling Ibalik,” “Mapipigil Mo Ba?,” “Paper Rain,” “Wonder,” “Rainbow Coloured Sky,” “Bawat Tao,” “Wrapped Around Your Finger,” “Bakit Kaya,”” “Sugar” and “Nananabik.”

“This is our first album with our new members, Mike, Joshua and Rommel, although they’ve been with the band for more than two years now,” Jinky grants. “They previously recorded covers with us and also our live performances.”

Since the new members came in after Suzara left the group, the newcomers have blended well with the original members. In fact, even before Mike joined the group, he already wrote songs for Freestyle, like “Mananatili sa’Yo,” for the album, Once in a Lifetime.

The rest of the Freestyle are Tat Suzara and Jinky Vidal, Nikki Cabardo and Gerard Banzon.

Nograles to be next vice president?
By Ben O. Tesiorna

AFTER being elected as new president of the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD), many are saying that the next position for Speaker Prospero Nograles is the vice presidency.

Sun.Star Davao asked some Mindanaoans on their opinion of the possibility for Nograles to become the next vice president and many supported the idea but others, especially the militant groups, outrightly dismissed it.

Here are some of their statements:

"The possibility of Nograles becoming vice president is there. But as human rights' workers to support him? No. On the issue of human rights violations and other scandals involving the first family, which is a big public concern, he has done nothing. Not even a single statement of condemnation. When it comes to public issue, which needs public concerns, Nograles is silent. His performance now only shows how rabid defender he is of President Arroyo." -- Kelly Delgado of Karapatan Southern Mindanao

"Sure I will support and campaign for his (Nograles) candidacy." -- City of Mati Vice Mayor Cesar de Erio

"Yes and why not." -- DCWD president of the board Ed Bangayan

"The future of Nograles in the national politics depends on the survival of PGMA (Arroyo) as president whether she will still be in power or not until 2010 or beyond. I think if she survives, the people will again use their protest votes come 2010 just like what happened last May 2007 elections where the Genuine Opposition in the senatorial race dominated over the Team Unity. If ever Nograles will be the standard bearer of the present administration, he will suffer the same fate of the senatorial bets of Team Unity." -- Joel Virador of Bayan Muna

"That's possible. Being House Speaker and probably Lakas president, Nograles stands to have the best credentials to the vice president position for as long as he plays his political cards very well until 2010. As a Mindanaoan, I should be proud for this chance." -- Former Davao City mayor Benjamin de Guzman

"I am all out for a vice president from Mindanao and I am glad that it might happen. Finally we have someone from Davao in the very halls of power. Unlike others in the past who claim they are from Mindanao, Speaker Nograles is a hands-on Mindanaoan. He knows what is happening down here so will be in a better position to bring reform and changes." -- businesswoman Joji Ilagan-Bian

"It's an opportunity for us Mindanaoan. I'll campaign hard for Nogie as vice president." -- Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy

"Personally, I would like to. But winning is another thing." -- Compostela Valley Governor Arturo Uy

"Why not." -- Secretary Silvestre Bello III and sportswriter Jon Develos

"I will, pero wala na siya kaila sa Mati (he is not known in Mati)." -- City of Mati executive assistant Richard Villacorte

"Bakit hindi. Mindanao needs to have stronger voice in national government and kelangan Mindanaoan at heart who advocates for peaceful settlement of decades-long conflict in the island." -- Ferdinand Zuasola, Davao Oriental provincial information officer

"Why not, it's an honor to us Mindanaoans." -- Jerry Dureza of the Presidential Assistant for Peace Process

"As vice president, I would also support him but not only because he is a Mindanaoan. I believe he has the experience and credentials to be an excellent vice president. Lastly, we're both from the same Suazo clan so obviously I would fully support him if he decides to make a go for it." -- former Davao del Norte vice governor Anthony del Rosario

"Frankly I would rather endorse and support Nogie for president. Honestly." -- North Cotabato Representative Bernardo Piñol Jr.

On Monday, about 150 Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD) members who were present at the national directorate meeting picked Nograles as their new president after Representative Jose de Venecia Jr. resigned from his post few hours before the convention.

North Cotabato Representative Bernardo Piñol said no election happened as all of those present in the convention approved unanimously the motion filed by Representative Simeon Datumanong for Nograles to become the Lakas president.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo arrived at the Lakas convention held at the Manila Hotel at 1 p.m. She congratulated Nograles for being chosen as new Lakas chief.

In her speech, the President endorsed the official merging of Lakas-CMD with Kampi.

Arroyo said her concern for the country's economy is the main reason she wanted the two administration political parties to merge.

Piñol said Lakas is creating a committee to study the merging of Lakas and Kampi.

In a text message, Nograles said his first agenda after assuming the Lakas presidency post is to unite the party.

"Then we start talks to merge with other coalition parties after the Holy Week," Nograles said.

In just one month, Nograles was catapulted to the fourth highest position in the country and to head the ruling party.

anyway from an Aussie POV Davao is more like Adelaide :)

I'm not long returned from a return holiday in the glorious Philippines, and thought you may be interested to see some photos from my holidays. I didn't spend much time in Manila on this trip:

Okay, now we're flying down to the island of Mindanao and to the city of Davao, which has 1.7 million inhabitants and reminds me ever so much of Adelaide (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adelaide)!

Davao is home to the Malagos Garden Resort (http://www.malagos.com/), which has an interactive bird show. Here's one of the stars... a Philippine Hawk-Eagle (Spizaetus philippensis).
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__410.jpg

This is the Commemorative Monument to Peace and Unity outside the town hall in Davao.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__476.jpg

And here it is... the Davao City Hall, home of the Davao City Government (http://www.davaocity.gov.ph/).

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__480.jpg

This is the old town hall, built in the 1930's. The hall has a lovely fountain featuring durian and orchids, two symbols of Davao. Unfortunately the fountains were being serviced when I was there this time, and so were drained.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__506.jpg

Now Davao has the most unique Catholic cathedral in the country for sure. This is San Pedro (St. Peter's) Cathedral which is over the road from the town hall.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__483.jpg

It is that this point I must give a big thanks to MtApoStandard and paulkrps at the Philippine forum for answering my question about the construction dates for San Pedro (http://www.skyscrapercity.com/showthread.php?p=16241694). All the websites say it was built in 1847, but of course that was an older structure! The church was remodelled in 1964 but construction didn't finish until the early 1970's (according to my sources). It replaced an old wooden structure.

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2285/1816222258_c7eb0b8e58.jpg

Here's a city pic of the Imperial Davao Hotel, which is obviously owned by a very patriotic and religious Filipino...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__545.jpg

Of course I went to the local SM Department Store (http://www.smdeptstore.com/) (the local equivalent of Myer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myer)) except that SM own the shopping centre as well. (As an side, Australians are familiar with the "My store, Myer" slogan... yet SM has "My Store, My SM" - a rip-off?). Well anyway here's the SM shopping centre in Davao.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__763.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__765.jpg

And this is Halo-Halo (translates literally from Tagalog as "mix-mix") which is a popular Filipino dessert that is a mixture of shaved ice and milk to which are added various boiled sweet beans and fruits, and served cold in a tall glass or bowl. This version features ube ice-cream, corn flakes, sago, beans, leche flan, condensed milk and ice amongst other delights. Masarap!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__827.jpg

Nearby to Davao is Samal Island, a tropical paradise...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__597.jpg

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__686.jpg

I'll finish this thread with a plant called Caesalpinia pulcherrima. These were in bloom all over Davao and are quite a sight!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v626/adonline/Philippines__774.jpg

That's all folks!!

PSC supports RRD-Araw sports festival
March 11, 2008 in PSC

Tags: Araw ng Dabaw, PSC, Rodrigo Duterte, William "Butch" Ramirez

The Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will be sponsoring five events of the 2008 Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte-Araw ng Dabaw Sports Festival.

The PSC, chaired by Dabawenyo William “Butch” Ramirez, a former sports consultant of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, is bankrolling dancesports, chess, arnis, taekwondo and swimming.

The City Government of Davao through the Sports Development Division-City Mayor’s Office has supported 17 events as part of the city’s festivities.

Football for the young and veteran players kicked the festival on March 8 to 9 at the Tionko field and bodybuilding on March 9 at the Victoria Plaza.

Billiards at the JL Hall started on Tuesday while the other events will be played on Saturday at separate venues.

Tadakuma

At Jacinto Extension one will find Bo's Coffee Club, Kopi Roti, Golden Bamboo, Pepper & Peppers, BH Club, Charlie's, Joniel's, Tadakuma...Tadakuma?! Gotcha! Most of us don't notice this small Japanese restaurant but it's there!

Tadakuma used to be Ramen Tei located at the old Airport in Sasa. I recall, Leo, one of our former drivers who refused the Oshibori (rolled hot face towel) since he was already full thinking that it was fresh lumpia (spring roll)! Titanic was the hit movie that time and he was famous for calling Leonardo DiCaprio as Leonardo Carpio.

If you liked the old Ramen Tei and grieved for its demise, Tadakuma is the reincarnation located in front of Central Bank. Don't expect the place to be spanking new.

At Japanese restaurants, I'm so guilty of being stuck with ordering California Maki(P180). Disect the Japanese portion of my stomach and you'll find California Maki raising its hand - Ma'am present! DFH, move on! The world is so full of makis - uramaki, kappamaki, futomaki-is this similar to futo na kakanin?! I just ate corn so excuse me for being so corny.

My mouth is used to small-sized makis that you just pop in your mouth. So I popped one in,not thinking that it was bigger than the usual size. A DUH moment. Henry asked me if I wanted some more, "Yors, ophter oi wolo dih ing." The Maki was wonderfully moist and they put Tobiko - YAY - I like the mini-popping sensation of Tobiko.

The boyfriend ordered Gyudon(P180). I cringe at the sight of raw eggs being served to me. Too slimy and too salmonella-y. My father likes raw eggs. According to him, as a child, he would harvest fresh eggs from the farm, roll it in burning coals for a couple of seconds, and consume it. Capital E, Capital W. EW.

Henry requested his Gyudon to be hot and boy was that a good decision - the original sweet taste of Gyudon spiked with chili was really good. I now retract my egg rage - BWAHAHA!

I had Shoyu Ramen (P150) which lacked flavor. The hot pepper oil I added didn't help. My brother who frequents Tadakuma with his friends told me that I should've ordered the seafood ramen or the seafood something ramen.

The Gyoza was great(P100)! Gyoza is prepared in different ways but I find the pan fried ones more interesting - chewy and crunchy at the same time.

It's really nice to know that this Japanese restaurant is still around. Don't forget to add Tadakuma to your Japanese food haunts.

City to relocate TFD to cheaper headquarter
By Ben O. Tesiorna

THE City Government of Davao is planning to relocate Task Force Davao (TFD) into a cheaper headquarter even as it maintained the elite security unit will remain in the city despite the huge budget spent for its operation.

In the City Peace and Order Council meeting at the Grand Men Seng Hotel on Monday, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said they are planning to relocate TFD, but he did not say where as nothing is definite yet.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Duterte clarified the rental for the headquarters is not their main concern since it is just a small part of the almost P15 million annual budget of TFD.

He said majority of the budget goes to more than 200 Special Cafgus that have been utilized by TFD.

It was learned that the city is spending P1 million a month for the allowances and salaries of the Scaa's.

Duterte said TFD would stay for as long as President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has no order for its

Night Flight To Davao
By Capt. Roland T. Fisher

Meanwhile, the 63rd Squadron was still flying its missions to Davao from Owi and on the night of September 4, al about eight o'clock. Lieutenant Roland Fisher lifted the B-24D Miss Liberty off the runway. Fisher and his crew had been briefed to search for shipping south of the Philippines and in Davao Gulf, with Matina airstrip as their secondary target. By midnight they had found no shipping, and Fisher decided to attack the airstrip.

It was a very bright, moonlit night, which the 63rd crews disliked intensely, but there was no apparent opposition as Miss Liberty began her bomb run at five thou*sand feet. They were approaching the coast and the bombardier. Lieutenant How*ard Hammett, was taking control for the bomb run when the B-24 was caught per*fectly in six or seven searchlight beams. Antiaircraft fire followed, but it was fairly inaccurate. Fisher felt the plane bounce as the bombs dropped and he turned hard to the left and dived to shake off the lights. He had just rolled out of the turn and picked up speed to about one hundred and seventy-five when he saw small flashes in the shadow of his plane, straight ahead. Miss Liberty was still nailed in the searchlights but they were coming from behind, and what Fisher was looking at was a Japanese plane coming in head on, shooting.

Fisher saw '"the gun muzzles blinking and caught the outline of a plane. I started to call a warning to my crew when my senses told me that plane was going to take me head on. I reflexed and rolled the aircraft hard to the left and pulled back on the yoke. The fighter flashed by, clearly visible, and passed directly under my right engines. His right wingtip missed the lower right part of my fuselage by inches. I could see his aircraft very clearly in the bright lights and I saw his head, flying cap and goggles through the canopy as he went by. The plane was a Nick.

"I was still hollering on the intercom at the crew that we were under fighter at*tack and I rolled the plane back to horizontal and stuck the nose down hard to get some speed, I think I was hitting about two hundred and was maybe at four thou*sand feet when I heard some pop-pop sounds and there was a terrific, muffled bump and I went into an even steeper dive. I remember hearing the top turret swiveling but nobody said anything and I was trying to sort out just what was going on and read the instruments when the radar operator came on and said his radar was gone. By then we were down perhaps to two thousand feet and I remember my air speed was pretty well over two hundred and I decided to ease it back and discovered I had no pressure on my elevators. Again reflexively I snapped on my master cut-out switch on the auto pilot and began to feel for con*trol over the elevators with the elevator knob. There was a brief response, I thought, but it did not last and I was still in a sleet dive, still picking up speed. I could see the surf on the beach on the south end of Samal Island very clearly. It felt as if I was looking straight down.

"I remember then thinking 'Jesus, we are going to hit it. Should push the bail*out bell, but nobody could make it anyway. While was thinking this, I started rolling the trim tab back. The damn thing worked and we sailed out of the dive. I don't know how much altitude we had left, but I will never forget being able to see those damned waves in the moonlight, at any rate I left my power on and l got her reasonably level using the trim tab and we sailed out of Davao Gulf and took up a heading for Owi.

"We lucked out going home. Those Pratt and Whitneys ran perfectly all the way and the weather was calm. The Flight engineers assessed the damage and reported huge gaping holes, that our main elevator control cables had been cut, that we had no hydraulic pressure because of severed lines and the electrical system was erratic because of torn wires and conduit. We had three crewmen wounded, with masses of fragments of metal in their backs. From this we thought that we had been struck by a large shell causing the big holes in the bottom of the aircraft just in back of the bomb bay keel between the two waist windows, and also throwing fragments through (the sides tearing out the cables, longerons and fearing a hole in the top. Actually it was cannon fire that cut the cables on the sides and blew the top out as well as wounding the men.

"It was all hard to figure out and we were more concerned with helping the wounded men than trying to repair the cables. The engineers worked hard with pli*ers and spare wire trying to splice the cables, but whenever I put pressure on the yoke the splices would part. We decided I should continue to fly home on the trim tab and that we would try to disturb the trim of the aircraft as little as possible by all sitting still. This is why we lucked out on the weather because I'm convinced I never could have made it if we had hit turbulence.

"When we approached Owi, control told me they might request that I ditch because they had the entire day strike almost ready to line up for takeoff and they didn't want to take a chance of my crashing and blocking the runway, I reported to them that 1 did not have good elevator control and did not think I could ditch it, and we had wounded men aboard. So they agreed I could take a crack at landing. I swung the old lady down south of the island in a big gradual turn and got her headed north on a long slow final approach. We figured if we could get fluid back into the hydraulic system we would have enough to operate the brakes with maybe one shot if we cranked everything else down by hand. So we collected fluids in the customary manner of shot up bomber crews . . .grapefruit juice, coffee and water from canteens, urine and spit.

"On the approach we cranked the wheels down, but I did use hydraulic power to put down about twenty degrees of flap and lock them. I just kept on easy power and played the trim lab over the fence and made the best goddamn landing I ever made in my life. Right at the end of the strip I popped on the brakes. They lasted for a second or two and then went out so I ground looped it right in front of the palm stumps.

"Everybody was excited and kept looking at the plane. The two sides of the rear of the fuselage were intact but the top bad a hole blown just above the waist win*dows and the bottom was shredded. "Inspecting the torn condition of the bottom we found strange pieces of metal and glass sticking in it and only then realized that we had been struck by another aircraft. This was when I remembered a big orange boom I had seen off in the night and I felt satisfied that the twin engined fighter I bad seen in the search lights had attacked us from the rear, collided with us and clashed. So we reported the mission as such."

On the ground at Davao a Japanese night fighter squadron was congratulating Warrant Officer Yoshimasa Nakagawa and his observer for destroying an Ameri*can intruder. They had taken off to intercept Miss Liberty and were closing in when the cannon jammed and it seemed that the enemy bomber would escape. The Japanese pilot decided he would ram, and his propeller slashed into the bomber's fuselage. Nakagawa reported that the big American aircraft started to fall immedi*ately. His plane, its canopy smashed, kept flying. Flying glass had gashed his eye and the wind buffeting his face forced him to turn sideways in his seat, but he managed to control the battered plane. When the bomber started to level off again Nakagawa was about to repeat the attack, but the American plane reportedly fal*tered and plunged into the water. The damaged Japanese fighter landed safely back at its base.

Twenty years later Roland Fisher and Yoshimasa Nakagawa would meet, after Fisher read of the "loss" of Miss Liberty in a book about the Japanese suicide pilots.

Chamber to provide livelihood for women
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) is implementing a project that will promote entrepreneurship among women in Toril, Davao City using recyclable materials.

The project, dubbed as "Setting up a Waste Recycling Enterprise for Women in Toril District," is funded by the Australian Agency for International Development through the Philippine-Australia Community Assistance Program.

The chamber said that since 2000, DCCCII has been working on contributing to two of Davao City Government's development agenda, which are the solid waste management, and the women and child development.

Eight barangays in Toril district will be the beneficiaries of the project, including Bankas Heights, Crossing Bayabas, Daliao, Lizada, Marapangi, Lubogan, Toril Poblacion, and Sirawan.

The project aims to improve the capability of the women in Toril to develop an enterprise out of recyclable waste generated in the district.

It is also initiated to provide alternative livelihood opportunities for the women in the same area, and to increase awareness on the environmental as well as economic benefits and reducing waste.

With the implementation of the project, DCCCII expects that a training and display center of products out of recyclable materials will be set up and a formal organization for women in the area will be created.

The chamber also targets to train 800 women in Toril on recycling in a year.

Also, the chamber will conduct three techno training workshops in a year and capacity building training on leadership, value formation and appreciation of environment, managing a cooperative enterprise, and product development and marketing.

Aside from these, the project is expected to come up to market study results for collecting waste materials safely.

A site visit to a recycling facility to further widen the women's awareness on the environment and value of recycling solid wastes is also an expected output of the chamber through the initiation of the project.

DavNor eyes 2010 Palaro
Sunstar Davao

TAGUM CITY, Davao del Norte -- The long wait may finally be over for Davao to host the Palarong Pambansa.

Davao del Norte, the country's biggest banana exporting province, is now poised to become the country's new sports capital of the South. And that's no bananas.

Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario formally laid down the groundwork for the province's reinvigorated thrust towards positioning itself as a major sports destination in the country.

Del Rosario recently made three major bold steps towards achieving that goal. First, he appointed his son, former Vice Governor and true-blue sportsman Anthon del Rosario to head the province's sports front office. Second, program the reconstruction of the fire-razed old sports complex into a spanking new state-of-the-art facility. And third, conduct a province-wide consultative sports summit to redirect the policies and programs on sports.

All these are geared towards an immediate goal-host the 2010 Palarong Pambansa, which is the country's national biggest school-based sports competition.

Davao City and other major provinces in the Davao region has been eyed as possible host of the annual national sports conclave, but due to the unavailability of venue, the region has been passed up in past biddings.

In contrast, Southern Mindanao neighbors Koronadal City, Sarangani Province and General Santos City have all hosted the Palarong Pambansa, the former having hosted the meet in 1995 and in 2006.

The new sports complex project will be commenced soon in Barangay Mankilam across the province's Government Center, where the old sports complex once stood until it was razed by fire in March 2003.

"We expect this project to be completed by 2010," del Rosario said.

The younger Del Rosario, who owned the Davao Eagles franchise in the now-defunct MBA, is now laying the cornerstones of the province's sports program that will lead to possible hosting of other major sports events like the revived Mindanao Friendship Games and the DAVRAA, or even national competitions conducted by the National Sports Associations.

Del Rosario has scheduled, in cooperation with the Philippine Sports Commission and the Philippine Sports Institute, the first ever Davao del Norte Sports Summit in April 3-4 with some 600 participants expected. The bulk of these delegates will come from the barangays, the public schools, and the youth sector.

"They are our frontliners. We have to strengthen our ranks first. We need to achieve a common bond and a common goal, and this we hope to achieve through the Summit," Del Rosario said.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez has thrown his support to the Summit and will be sending the country's topnotch resource speakers on various subject matters including formulation of grassroots sports development and sports for all programs.

Del Rosario said he expects the barangays to formulate their own sports programs anchored on their chosen focus sport.

"We will identify our focus sports and specialize in these fields," said Del Rosario.

Davao del Norte is noted for producing potential national members in boxing, karatedo, swimming and taekwondo, who have earned prominence in the Palarong Pambansa and other national youth competitions. It placed 9th among 81 provinces in the recent Philippine Olympic Festival in Manila.

One thing for sure though...it's bigger than what you think it is. So hopefully, negotiations would push through. This upcoming giant is part of the industry im babbling about in the previous pages that would boost our city's economy and that might as well develop a stronger local market base when it comes to retail and real estate industries in davao city. And through it and the other upcoming giants, dabawenyos would have the option to work in the country instead and not abroad just to increase its purchasing power ;).

By coincidence, I was googling for Ayala's project in Davao a couple of hours ago to find out what was budgeted for this development. Gee, 2.3B pesos is no joke.

Agree with you Neyo. This affirms the trust and confidence of ALI to Davao. This type of development for sure is at the moment only fitting to the island's most cosmopolitan city- that's as far as the island is concerned. :)

The 2.2 Billion is an initial budget that already includes the IT Building/park and mall. Let's just say that the 1 billion would be allocated for its retail development....that is still BIG! :D

And it won't hurt to do good at both worlds- big bang to your earning and broaden your horizons at the same time. :)

I agree! Some people does...for education, family, etc. But im referring to one of the other reason (general reason) which is common to most of the Filipinos who migrated abroad, and that is the notion to earn big. Nothing's wrong with that though.

That's 100M shy to what I have read. :)

If we turn the budget around, say 1.3B for the mall, still that's a hell of a reason to celebrate for Mindanaoans.

Agree! Nothing's wrong with doing every which ethical way you can to up your income. I tip my hat off to the OCWs everywhere in the world.

but back to the topic @kuya tj.... i agree, if we could create more well paying jobs locally, then this will stop the brain drain, or at least slow down the process....
