Guys...curious lang ako...kc last year, MCC Capital Projects had shown its interest to finance this project.

eto yung excerpt ng news:

Tapos ngayon, Marubeni Philippines Corporation (MPC), a 100% subsidiary of Marubeni Corporation in Japan is also interested to assist Davao in our Davao LRT project....

2 international financers? this is no joke then.....is it safe to say that they also did their homework? that they also made some studies? d naman cguro magkakainterest ang dalawang investors na to if it's not feasible...ryt?

CMIIW, those are 2 different proposals. Davao Region LRT (Digos, Davao, Panabo and Tagum Cities) for the MCC and the Davao City LRT (Calinan, Toril, Downtown and Lasang districts in davao city only) for Marubeni Phil Corp.

Hi guys, my first post here in the Davao thread although I've been reading your posts cum conversations for quite some time now.

I don't get the whole fascination with the commuter train line - especially one above ground - given its cost and the potential low ridership in Davao. A point was raised earlier on how the train lines here in Manila are still being subsidized by the central government despite the massive ridership. Bottom line is, Manila residents are not willing to pay too much for it.

With average purchasing power in Davao lower than it is here (around a third), why don't we go for organized bus routes on the major thoroughfares and have the jeepneys gradually demised.

That would definitely be a cap in the feather for our fair city. Not to mention cost effective and will not ruin the beautiful landscape with grade level (or heaven forbid overhead) tracks.Good insight @IFSSTK, welcome... overhead mas transit system has adverse effect sa mga madadaanan nito.

But kung ito ang itatayo ok pa siguro. Sana wag lang haluan ng pamumulitika ang feasibility studies maybe the project will see the light of day.

Guys...sa mga matured jan and maraming alam..eheheheh whats the difference between a monorail and light railway transport system? :dunno: i checked the internet pero i need a layman's definition...ehehehe ang kaning MRT and LRT dire sa Metro Manila, can this be considered as monorail? how about the tren sa riles? kanang daghan makaligis dire...eheheheh unsa may difference sa duha? :dunno:

Coz i checked Marubeni Corporation's site...most of their recent transpo projects are monorail daw like the Dubai Monorail System....sa tan-aw ninyo..unsa kahay iconstruct dinha sa Davao? a monorail? or kanang murag MRT dire sa Edsa, or katong tren na naay riles na nagabyahe from manila to bicol? :dunno:

From answers.com
Definition of light rail

The term light rail was devised in 1972 by the U.S. Urban Mass Transit Association (UMTA) to describe new streetcar transformations which were taking place in Europe and the United States. In Germany the term stadtbahn (http://www.answers.com/topic/stadtbahn) was used to describe the concept, and many in the UMTA wanted to adopt the direct translation, which is city rail. However, the UMTA finally adopted the term light rail instead. Light in this context is used in the sense of "intended for light loads and fast movement", rather than referring to physical weight, since the vehicles often weigh more than those on so-called heavy rail (http://www.answers.com/topic/heavy-rail) systems. The investment in infrastructure is also usually lighter than would be found for a heavy rail system.

Junax, I concur with your point on it being free and us Davaoenos getting a free ride but do remember that that only covers the construction costs. After the BOT (or whatever permutation of it) lapses, our taxes will be the one subsidizing it, as is the case with a lot of mass commuter trains in the developing world.

Ibex, the monorail does look good doesn't it, plus - on a per capita basis - it will be greener. In principle, however (just my own), I am against overhead train lines as they destroy the natural vista. I am not keen on losing that, especially on my beautiful hometown. Notice how people in these forums are aghast over spaghetti wires and them destroying what otherwise would have been a great picture. A subway would then be the choice but, then again, that would be a heck of a lot expensive and, as my first point would show, I am against that too.

^^ an optimistic point of view... after 20 years or so, subsidizing the existing trains will not be that hard if we view davao as a progressive skyscraper city by then. of course there are pros and cons, but i must agree that most of my opinions here only worth 2 cents. still the final say about the feasibility and all that, is in the hands of the investors/LGUs brain heads.

my dream though is a bogota BRT system and erase those jeepneys.

for a public transport, BRT + taxis only is a better scenario than LRT + jeepneys :)

I think this will be facelifting the cityscape as the one seen in the photo... but im with you on your apprehensions on the sustainability of this project and its effect to Davao's coffers if the project fails.

Anyway on the other hand most of the ambitious projects in any city don't have the approval from all the people all the time. Let's be optimistic nalang siguro if not now maybe in the coming years it will be possible. And I want to see Davao City leading the way in this endeavor. ^^

high impact projects/infrastructures are a MUST if we want to lure big time investors ;) included also in my wish list (aside from the samal bridge and lrt) are the SRP like project along davao's 50 km coastline and an expressway connecting davao with tagum, digos, mati and perhaps cotabato and gensan.

Europe, Canada considered as markets for real property
By Joel B. Escovilla Published : 2008-03-13
Mindanao Times

REAL ESTATE developers are looking towards the Europe and Canada as a growing market, which a bit of a departure from four years ago when their main market are the nurses from the United States and entertainers from Japan.

Genoveva Pajes, vice president-internal affairs of the Davao City Association of Real Estate Practitioners, Inc. (Dacarep), said that the Europe, United Kingdom particularly has become a growing market a couple of years now while Filipino immigrants and workers from Canada have also been investing their money on real estate.

“Japan has suffered a slump and the US is still pretty stable,” she said, noting that a number of Filipinas who bought property could be classified as “mail-to-order brides.” Europe, Canada considered as markets for real property.

She said the slowdown of the US economy and the appreciation of the peso against the dollar have not really impacted much on the industry since Davao City has always been considered a buyer’s market with its lower cost of living, peace and order, and better lifestyle.

“And technology has made it very easy for us to reach clients abroad not only the US clients but even the local market,” she said.

In 2003, 70-80 percent of the total P40 million sales of the real property industry in the first quarter came from entertainers from Japan or “Japayukis” and the nurses in the United States.

Warphy Sarande, trustee of the Davao Board of Realtors Foundation, Inc., said that overseas Filipino workers usually get properties from high-end subdivisions of Robinson’s Highlands or Sta. Lucia Realty Developers which can cost between P3,100 to P4,800 per square meters.

Sarande said the outlook for the real estate industry for this year is good since it has been growing steadily every year the past few years. “Hopefully, this will continue because it will really help the city,” he said.

Last year, the Davao City Investments and Promotions Center granted incentives to nine companies engaged in real property development and tourism-related facilities with a total investment of P728 million.

Santos Land Development Corporation, with its project Priscilla Estates Subdivision, accounted for the biggest investment with P300.38 million. Damosa Land, Inc. applied for fiscal incentives for two projects, the Damosa IT Park worth P103.69 million and Microtel Inn and Suites worth P88.69 million.

Benjamin Pajes, Dacarep auditor, said the group has no qualitative data on its existing and potential market but based on experiential data and testimonies from members, the industry in Davao City is growing.

“We couldn’t really quantify but we can deduce that it’s growing because they (clients) have been buying properties,” he said, adding that the group is not really worried about the dollar slump because shelter is a basic need.

Pizzaiolo revisited
By Gigie A. Agtay
Sunstar Davao

WE REVISITED one of the best pizza parlors in Davao City -- Pizzaiolo -- upon the invitation of Waterfront Insular's marketing communications officer Brenda Elleen P. Arabe, and discovered new pasta dishes in their menu.

Chef Nick Anderson of the Waterfront group of hotels said they are trying to develop their menu to create more popular pasta dishes that clients can eat anytime of the day.

For pasta lovers, Pizzaiolo's pasta is what dreams are made of. Pizzaiolo now has eight pasta dishes in their menu -- Davaoeño, Al Forno, CHoecken Alfredo, ALio Olio Pepperoncino, Chrimp Ala Pobre, Mushroom Carbonara, Arabiatta, and Tomoto Mozarella, all served with bread sticks and parmesan cheese.

There are times when images speak better than words. Now we'll let the pictures do the talking. This is a guaranteed feast not only for the eyes but also for the palate.

The Pizza Bites and Dips is one of Pizzaiolo's new pizza flavors that you can eat casually with your fingers. Flavors vary by month. For the month of April, the pizza comes with meat dip and the cheese and basil.

"It is an off the record promo, something creative, the way it is presented," Chef Nick says.

"We retain the popular Pizzaiolo's thin crust but we will develop other flavors," he adds.

Pizzaiolo is open before lunch till 11 p.m. For reservations, you may call Waterfront Insular Davao at tel. no. (082) 233-2881.

By the way on Easter Sunday, the Waterfront Insular Hotel offers an Easter egg hunt treat for the kids dubbed "Easter Quest." Children will be in their culinary hats while they hunt for the treasure eggs on March 23 starting 2 p.m.

For only P450 nett, children get to make their own pizza and ice cream concoctions with Waterfront chefs.

SM continues efforts for customer's welfare
Sunstar Davao

IN THE effort to address the special needs of differently-abled clients, SM Supermalls, including SM City Davao, continue their efforts not only to upgrade facilities but also to provide various inputs in handling their concerns.

Recent upgrades include special areas for the use of customers in wheelchairs at SM cinemas. At the differently-abled comfort rooms, bidets are now installed for washing convenience.

A number of public telephones have now been lowered, while shorter water fountains for easier access are now installed. Resting areas and seats at different areas in the malls emphasize priority use for the elderly, pregnant women, and the handicapped.

During the last week of March, employees of SM City and its affiliates and tenants will once again undergo a series of seminars on handling special customers.

This is in coordination with the Parents Mobilization Action Group and the Association of Differently-abled Persons.

In line with these efforts, worthy also of mention is the recent talk of Annabel Stelhi at the SM Mall of Asia. Internationally acclaimed author and lecturer Annabel Stehli talked about her daughter's extraordinary recovery from autism.

Ms Stehli's daughter, Georgiana Thomas, was also around to tell her inspiring story to the audience in the mall's Cinema 6.

The seminar, Recovering from Autism, tackled Ms. Stehli's personal experience and her search to find a solution for Georgiana's condition. Georgiana was diagnosed as severely autistic at the age of three in 1968.

She has completely recovered from autism today, and has her own family. The mother and daughter tandem talked about searching for ways to conquer autism including discovering Auditory Integration Training (AIT) therapy.

They shared the success of AIT on Georgina into becoming what she today, a wife and mother of a 6-year-old, an advocate, and public speaker fluent in nine languages.

The seminar was followed by an interactive discussion wherein the audience had a chance to ask Ms. Stehli and Georgiana questions on autism and related issues.

Parents, students, and other attendees were enlightened and educated as the mother and daughter team gave hope and inspiration about children with special needs.

The Recovering from Autism seminar is one of the many projects of SM Supermalls to assist the physically and mentally challenged and their families. It is a joint effort of SM Supermalls, Autism Society of the Philippines, Autism Pinoy, Philippine Association of Behavioral Analysis (Paba), and STLC.

Yano stages grand re-launching tonight

TODAY (Friday), Davaoeño artist Eric Gancio will make his first major step for the grand comeback of his famed 90’s Yano band.
At Matina Town Square starting 8 pm, Eric will start the “official nationwide re-launching” of the band responsible for the hits like Tsinelas and Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo.
“It’s now a full blast (campaign) for the national re-launching (of the band),” Gancio said.
Since late last year, Gancio has been performing under the name Yano, a move that keeps the spirit of the band alive.
He made a soft re-launch of the band’s name last December and staged a series of bar tours to re-introduce his music to the local music lovers.
"(We got) overwhelming response,” Gancio said on his tours in the city’s top night bars that included Jive, Pacific Harbor, Rizal Promenade, and Idol Grills. “Most of the shows were sold-out.”
Gancio said he and his new band members -- John Gador on drums and Omar on bass – will soon be conquering Manila.
“Before the release of the fourth album by April or May, we will be going to Manila (for a series of promotion),” Gancio said.
But Gancio said Yano, under his leadership, will still be based in Davao where he wants to grow old.
He said he hopes to contribute more in the Davao music scene.
“I envision the empowerment of homegrown musicians with their original compositions,” he said.
The Davaoeño Gancio grew up in Davao, but spent years in Manila in the 90’s where he met Dong Abay, the other half of Yano, at the University of the Philippines in 1992.
Gancio and Abay – together as Yano -- became a nationwide phenomenon in 1994 right after the release of the single, Banal na Aso, Santong Kabayo. They produced more hits like Tsinelas, Trapo, Kumusta Na, Esem, Iskolar Ng Bayan, Senti, among others.
But the Yano was disbanded after the third album was released in 1997 when Abay quit due to fame-induced pressure.
In 2004, Gancio returned to Davao where he started to perform under his real name.
He released one solo album titled Sa Bandang Huli before deciding to revive Yano. Gancio said the clamors of his Davao-based fans prompted him to give another life to the band.

^^ the mrt concept po includes prime stations with shops or passages, which could be leased out (to concessionaires)... this is the other source of income po

for it to earn po, the riding public must adapt a different "riding culture" po.... they must patronize the lrt (by paying a high price for convenience, safety and class -> katkat ba? )

if they (riding public) have a shoe string budget for transpo, then they must buy a months ticket po than buy a daily ticket....

consider these tariffs:

one way ticket (to all points valid for two hours) Php 100 pesos,

day ticket (to all points valid for a day) Php 300

week ticket (to all points valid for a week) Php 500 pesos,

month ticket (to all points valid for a month) PhP 1,500 pesos...

question: have they tried na po this mrt pricing in manila??? :dunno:

Just for your reference, here is the fare matrix here in Metro Manila for LRT 2 (Megatren) and LRT 3 (MRT/Manila Metro Star)

Line 2 System / Megatren

Php 12.00 -1 to 3 interstations
Php 13.00 - 4 to 6 interstations
Php 14.00 - 7 to 9 interstations
Php 15.00 - 10 interstations

Stored Value Denomination: Php 100.00
Single Journey Ticket: Php12.00 each.
Stored Value Ticket: Php120.00 - Accepted at all MRT Line 2 Stations. Multiple rides. Valid for six (6) months.

Line 3 / Metro Star

^^ from North to Taft Station - 15 pesos only (13 stations)

Mas mahal pa nga ang magjeep dito sa Metro Manila eh. Consider this, a jeepney ride from our place to Araneta Center Cubao costs 18 pesos while an MRT ride would only cost me 12 pesos.

Actually sir rajah i believe all lrt/mrt lines are earning big-time. If the gov't would say na lugi, then it's bullsh*t. There are thousands of commuters patronizing this mode of transpo. Halos 24/7 siksikan, specially on LRT 1 and 2. :)

But with regards to Davao getting one, IMO it would take 8-12 years pa siguro before we can be ready to have this kind of transportation.

White sand beaches (other than Boracay)

By Ed Biado

So it’s Bora year after year. Are you looking for something different? Or something a little similar? To help you find an alternative summer getaway, I’ve compiled a list of beaches that doesn’t compromise your need for immaculate white sand. Your options include a few known destinations that are more commercial and others that are obscure.

1. Cebu has its fair share of white sand beaches. Malapascua is a tiny island at the northeast tip of Cebu. It is relatively new to the international market, but is already garnering worldwide respect as “the new Boracay.” Another Cebuano island with powder white sand is Bantayan. It is a low-key, laid-back resort-island with friendly locals.

2. Puerto Galera is an ideal place to do island-hopping from Luzon or a place to do nothing and everything on pristine white sands and clear, warm water. The most popular beaches for swimming are White Beach and Tamaraw Beach. The former is famed for its Boracay-like vibe. In recent years, it has been chock-full during the peak season.

3. Catanduanes lies in the Pacific Ocean just off Luzon and is one of the Philippines’ major surfing venues. Puraran Beach’s white sand is very appealing, but currents can be overwhelming during the surfing season. There are other white sandy beaches, including Pamangal Beach near San Andres or Igang Beach.

4. Bohol is becoming more popular as the region’s best beach destination, with superb white sand and some world class diving sites, though mostly on the adjacent little island of Panglao. The picturesque Alona Beach is one of them. Meanwhile, the 2-kilometer stretch of Doljo Beach is a more secluded, less developed, shallow water option. It is utterly unspoiled.

5. Siargao Island is a newly discovered island with white sand beaches and surfing waves compared to that of Hawaii. The island is a perfect haven for the sun, sea, and surf buffs. It is a paradise of tropical land with scores of reefs, points and white beaches.

6. Samal Island has almost its entire beach areas covered in white sand. The water is crystal-blue clear throughout the coast. It offers unending fascination with its thick mangroves, coral reefs, rolling hills and rock formations. Vacationers are able to view both the sunrise and sunset from most points; a rarity indeed.

7. Honda Bay in Palawan is characterized by coral reefs breaking crystal-clear water onto empty, fine-white sand beaches. The bay is flanked with many islands like Arreceffi, which houses the plush Dos Palmas Resort. Other accommodation options can be found on other islands. Puerto Princesa is an ideal place to stay. Deserted islands with white sand beaches can be reached by a 30-minute boat ride.

8. Subic, now almost as metropolitan as Manila, is a hub for commerce and tourism. Points of interest include the 18-hole Binictican Golf Course and Clubhouse, bowling and arcade center, a ship wharf past a restricted forested area, firing ranges, fishing grounds and an area for bungee jumping. A white beach also laces its bay.

9. Pangasinan is an Ilocandia province that has at least two pristine white sand beaches. At Hundred Islands, beach bums may rent an island for one’s own privacy to enjoy. Short boat rides take off from the village of Lucap to the Hundred Islands. In Bolinao, white sands are accompanied by coral rock formations along the beaches. It is currently gaining popularity with the city crowd. Most of its resorts are already fully booked for the Holy Week.

10. Camiguin, known for its lanzones festival, offers white-sand beaches and magnificent caves untouched by industrial development. The island lies off the north coast of Mindanao. Aside from its beaches, the frontier also brags of spring resorts and waterfalls. www.manilastandardtoday.com[/QUOTE]

Davao region tops aquaculture production
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (14 March) -- The Davao Region ranked first in the country's aquaculture production hitting a growth rate of 19 percent last year.

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR XI) regional director George Campeon said in terms of volume, the region yielded about 67,000 metric tons in 2007 as against the 2006's 55,000 MT.

He attributed the growth to more fish cages established in the different parts of the region saying the Island Garden City of Samal has about 16 while Panabo City has 56 units.

He said the 19 percent growth rate is much higher than the average figure in other areas of the country which was between 10 percent to 14 percent.

Fish cages, he said will be a continuing project and for this year they will install in the third quarter 8 units in Pantukan, Compostela Valley.

Campeon said one unit would cost some P350,000 and after five months of operation the operator could get 19 percent on ROI (return of investment).

He said yield in aquaculture production contributed some 35 percent to the country's total production of the fishery sector.

Campeon meanwhile said that with regards the Fisheries Code, they had imposed strict implementation of the code and that BFAR is running after violators.

With the concerted efforts carried out by multi sectoral groups illegal activities were considerably reduced. (PIA) [top]

LRT 2 project: 31.42 billion
14-kilometer double track mostly elevated carriageway with eleven (11) stations with a 26 four-car trains.

toril to lasang, about 40 km more or less. do the computation :)

malaki din pala :)

I think 1 thing good thing or 2 good thngs about building BRT or LRT it will decongest the traffic & in environment aspect will reduce gas emissions tremendously , justifiable ba goys ? atty peng what do you think? :D

Actually sir rajah i believe all lrt/mrt lines are earning big-time. If the gov't would say na lugi, then it's bullsh*t. There are thousands of commuters patronizing this mode of transpo. Halos 24/7 siksikan, specially on LRT 1 and 2. :)

But with regards to Davao getting one, IMO it would take 8-12 years pa siguro before we can be ready to have this kind of transportation.

siguro less than that kasi way back in 2000 LRT was already included in the Davao projects which inlcude the Solid Waste Disposal Program ,Traffic Signalization etc. the mayor is really serious in the LRT project, i remember he even planned to buy 2nd hand carriages from Taiwan .

The Mutya Ng Dabaw Beauty Pageant is one of the highlights for the Annual Araw ng Dabaw Celebration.

This event showcases some of the most beautiful women that the city has to offer.

Coronation night will be held on March 14, 2008. 7 PM at the CAP Auditorium.
2008 Mutya Pageant

Historical documents show that on March 16, 1936 Davao was “created” by Assemblyman Romualdo C. Quimpo when he sponsored a bill in Congress making Davao a chartered city. President Manuel L. Quezon signed the said bill into law on October 16, 1936. The formal inauguration on March 1, 1937 was marked by a grand parade in the poblacion.

The idea of celebrating Araw ng Dabaw was conceived by the former Davao City Mayor, Atty. Elias B. Lopez, a native Dabawenyo. The observance, which started in 1968, has continued to the present. Since its inception, it has been celebrated with weeklong festivities from March 10 to 16, except on 1987’s golden anniversary celebration that lasted for almost two weeks.

Today, the Araw ng Dabaw (Davao Day) has evolved into a celebration of the Davaoeños’ oneness. It is a vibrant feast held every March 16 and together with the Kadaywan Festival, ranks as Davao's biggest annual event.

Annual highlights of the celebration include:
"Parada Dabawenyo "
A socio-civic parade along the major streets of Davao.

"Datu Bago Awards"
This award is named after Datu Bago, a local chieftain who tried to repulse Spanish encroachment in Davao.

"Banda Hudyaka"
A band parade along the major streets of Davao.

"Piging sa Dan"
The annual food street festival.

"Kasikas"
Another spectacle along the major city streets.

"Mutya ng Dabaw"
Search for the city's Ambassador of Goodwill.

Other events, such as "Huni" (pop music song writing competition), concerts, arts and culture presentations, various sports competitions are also during the festival.

The celebration of Araw ng Dabaw makes Dabawenyos, natives or by choice, aware of their role in the society they move in that make it a tradition worth cherishing.

The ceremonies will commence with a prayer song by the Davao Boys Choir and the UIC Chorale, followed by the Prayers of Harmony by Datu George Mandahay (representing the indigenous tribes), Allem Jamal Munib (representing the Muslim communities) and Reverend Apollo Quiboloy (representing the Christian communities).

71st Araw ng Dabaw co-chair Ed Bangayan will deliver his message of thanks to the supporters and the people behind this year’s celebration.

The program will then segue to the theatrical performances starting with the “DAWOW, DAVUH…DABAW!”, a look back at the history of Davao City, which will be participated by the City Councilors, City Government officials, Mutya ng Dabaw 2008 finalists, Davao Community Band, Kaliwat Theater Collective, Kathara Dance Theater Collective, representatives from the indigenous peoples, Muslim and Christian communities, deputy mayors, , DCNHS SPA students, Magallanes Elementary School, Madayaw Cultural Ensemble, Magallanes Community Dance Group, Davao City Police Anti-Riot Squad, Atty. Kaloy Zarate, Glenn Aque and Kai Durst.

After the showcase of Davao’s history, Dabawenyo artists Popong Landero will lead the singing of “Bahaghari Tayo”, the official anthem of this year’s celebration. This will be followed by the State of Davao Address to be participated by the Hiyas sa Kadayawan along with various personalities from the government and private sectors and the “Binhi sa Kasaysayan Alang Kang Rody” by Palanca awardee Don Pagusara.

City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will then deliver his festival message and the declaration of the opening of the 71st Araw ng Dabaw. After which, the celebration’s theme will be unveiled by Bangayan and 71st Araw ng Dabaw vice-chair and City Councilor Susan Isabel Reta.

As a finale to the ceremonies, 71 balloons will be released by the City Councilors, 71st Araw ng Dabaw Executive Committee and the State of Davao Address representatives, while singing “Tayo’y Dabawenyo”.

After the opening ceremonies, invited guests will then be ushered to a promenade to the Museo Dabawenyo for preview and blessing at 12:00 NN. Mayor Duterte will unveil the museum marker and deliver his message of imploration while Davao City Auxillary Bishop George Remando will lead in the blessing of the building.

This year’s Araw ng Dabaw theme is “Kasaysayan Balikan, Ihanda Kinabukasan" aptly so as the city pays tribute to the legacies and the best practices of their ancestors as the Dabawenyos today pave the way for a better, more secure and brighter future for the next generation. (CTOO/ircgarcia)

Signing of Davao as chartered city

Who should control Davao, the Japanese or Filipinos?

This may sound a silly question today, but this was the hottest issue that raged in Davao in the 1930’s that eventually led to the creation of Davao City.

During this period, the then undivided province of Davao, which had a capital town with the same name, was the biggest producer of abaca in the world. Abaca as well as coconut plantations sprawled all over Davao Gulf, with the Japanese practically controlling the entire industry.

Despite laws restricting foreign ownership of land, the Japanese managed to become the largest plantation owners in Davao. They were able to achieve this by using dummies to buy land for them, by marrying local women, particularly with datu lineage, and by renting land from local landowners.

By the 1930’s, Davao was completely under the control of the Japanese. Their economic clout made them politically influential. They had their own schools, hospitals and road networks. The biggest concentration of the Japanese was in Guianga Municipal District, centered around Mintal. Their population continued to grow, reaching 17, 900 by 1939.

As Japan was a growing world power, having defeated Russia in 1904 and annexed Korea in 1910 and Manchuria in 1931, fears were raised as to the real intentions of the Japanese in the country. During the 1934 Constitutional Convention, Davao delegate Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. denounced the control of Davao by the Japanese and their unlimited acquisition of land. The presence of the Japanese in Davao had now become a national problem.

On March 16, 1936 Davao Assemblyman Romualdo C. Quimpo filed Bill No. 609 or Commonwealth Act No. 51, An Act Creating the City of Davao. The City of Davao was to be formed by combining the capital town of Davao and the municipal district of Guianga. This made Davao City the largest city in the world with a territory of 2,244 square kilometers or 244,400 hectares.

As the creation of Davao City was intended to break the control of the Japanese, the Act stipulated that its officials would be appointed by the President of the Philippines, instead of being elected. It was believed that in elections, Japanese-supported candidates would win, thus entrenching Japanese power in Davao.

On October 16, 1936, the bill was signed into law by President Manuel L. Quezon. The following year, on March, 1937, Executive Proclamation No. 132 was issued that formally organized the City of Davao.

It was during the term of Mayor Elias B. Lopez that the celebration of the foundation of City of Davao was made a week-long celebration that culminated on March 16.

Today, Davao City is the most progressive city in Mindanao and is considered the most livable city in the country. Foreign investors and visitors are all welcome, but the city is under the firm control of Filipinos as its founding fathers had intended.

Kasaysayan Balikan Ihanda Kinabukasan!

Dear fellow Dabawenyos:

It is my honor to lead the 1.5 million multi-cultural and diverse peoples of Davao in this year’s 71st Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

We are celebrating this year by looking back to our past and learning from it in order to better prepare for a more secure and brighter future for our children and grandchildren. Thus, the theme, “Kasaysayan Balikan, Ihanda Kinabukasan!”

Please join me in our grand opening on March 14th at City Hall for a historical vignette performance by our outstanding artists and the State of Davao Address collectively and creatively presented by the different sectors of our city. Afterwards we will promenade to our very own Museo Dabawenyo, which we will unveil for the first time since we restored our old Court of First Instance Building.

We are making an important change in the selection of our Mutya ng Dabaw 2008 which now emphasizes the Dabawenya’s outstanding achievements in service to the development of her community. Because in Davao we believe that all our women are beautiful in their diversity, but our Mutya must also embody the pioneering Dabawenya spirit that sets our women apart from the rest. This is our salute to the Dabawenya on International Women’s Month.

Our new People’s Park will showcase the best of our arts and culture performed by the new generation of Dabawenyos while Rizal Park will have a flea market reminiscent of the tabô of the old days where communities exchange goods and services.

We will honor three outstanding Dabawenyos and one Dabawenya on March 15th by conferring upon them the prestigious Datu Bago Award and on the morning of March 16th we will all proudly march in our annual socio-civic parade to show our unity in diversity. As an added attraction, giant screens at Quezon Park and Almendras Gym will beam the Pacquiao-Marquez fight because Manny Pacquiao is an adopted son of Davao.

Let us show our world-renowned Dabawenyo spirit and celebrate the fact that we live in the city with the best water and the best life. Mabuhay!

Actually sir rajah i believe all lrt/mrt lines are earning big-time. If the gov't would say na lugi, then it's bullsh*t. There are thousands of commuters patronizing this mode of transpo. Halos 24/7 siksikan, specially on LRT 1 and 2. :)

But with regards to Davao getting one, IMO it would take 8-12 years pa siguro before we can be ready to have this kind of transportation.

umalis na po si uncle rajah... i will just answer on his behalf....

Nice one sir allan! So almost all banks in Davao have branches in C.M. Recto Avenue. All except Metrobank? :)

^^ I remember reading a 1997 edition yata na Guiness Book where CM Recto Avenue in DC held the title as having the most number of banks. Dunno if it is until now.

Europeans still keen on investing in Mindanao
The Philippines is still within the investment map of European investors, particularly Mindanao.

In a statement, the European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) said it will meet with the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. to discuss business opportunities.

"We believe there are partnerships that can be made in Mindanao and the Davao City Chamber represents the biggest business grouping over there," said Henry Schumacher, ECCP executive vice-president.

Mr. Schumacher said the ECCP will also hold discussions with the Cagayan De Oro Chamber of Commerce and the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

The Davao chamber has 310 corporate and individual members involved in agriculture, construction, design, finance, health, information technology, real estate, tourism, and the utilities industries.

The European business group has about 700 member companies, of which only 10 have business operations in Mindanao.

Total investments in the Davao Region last year reached P9.18 billion, up 44% from commitments made in 2006. Foreign direct investments were also up by 144% to P45.7 million.

Davao City has also seen an increased arrival of expatriates, ECCP said. Established in 1968, the Davao City Chamber has helped provide members with channels for investment opportunities and a marketing service facility.

Windows to Davao's Soul

From museums to historical markers to works of arts and ethnic fashion, Davao has them. They are more than mementos and souvenirs - they usher the visitor to a glorious past.

By Cheryll D. Fiel
davaoatoday.com

DAVAO CITY - This city has a number of places where every traveler can get the chance to better understand and appreciate it. And we're not just talking about museums.

Somewhere in the city's unmarked streets, inside the homes of many old families and the abodes of indigenous tribes of the vast lands here, lie the repositories of Davao's soul that are waiting to be discovered.

Many say Davao City is in itself a large ethnographic museum where the caretaking of these muses and gods and ghosts of its past is not relegated to institutions alone. There could be a lot more of these places of discovery, as there are more than a dozen ethno-linguistic tribes in the vast Lumad lands of this region.

But a good place to start are the city's museums.

The Davao Museum. For a quick getting-to-know-the-city tour, nothing beats the Davao Museum.

It has approximately 400 artifacts, some of which are acquisitions of the Davao Museum Foundation through donations while some are on loan from patrons.

This three-decade-old museum, built on a lot donated by Enrique Zobel and Jaime Zobel Ayala, has three galleries. An entrance ticket costs $2.

On the ground floor are two galleries. Gallery 1 would take you back to 19th-century and early 20th-century Davao. Mounted here are old photographs of Davao's landmarks, and excerpts from the documentations of Davao historians Ernesto Corcino and Macario Tiu.

Among the pictures are that of the Old City Hall building, which stood where the present City Hall is, the old capitol building, where the present City Council stands, and the old San Pedro Street, where shops abound then as now.

Claveria Street, now named Claro M. Recto Street, is shown in a picture as the leisure destination with Ideal Theater in the early 1900s (who can take a picture of this!?? ) and the Puericulture Center of the Davao Women's Club, which used to be the grand ballroom in those times.

There is a picture of the old San Pedro Church, which was made of wood in the mid-1900s.

Here, you will also learn that the site of the new Central Bank used to be the Provincial Court and Jailhouse in the 1960s, and that the present site of the Philippine National Bank on Recto Street used to be a bustling three-storey (three lang pala  , did they destroy the building or is it the same old building sa kanto????) commercial building named after Rafael and Jose Awad, a Lebanese merchant who came to Davao City sometime in 1892 and was the first to hire Japanese workers for his abaca plantation.

The second floor of the museum houses the ethnographic gallery where a colorful showcase of authentic indigenous garbs and accessories, musical instruments, farm implements, weaponry, burial jars, textiles and their arts and crafts are found.

The Japanese Museum. Here can still be found remnants of what used to be a Japanese controlled settlement in the early decades of the 20th century, as well as historical accounts of the community that once existed. Among these are the tools that the Japanese used in the early abaca plantations of the city, including old currencies and publications. It is located in Calinan District.

The Mindanao Folk Arts Museum. It houses a rich collection of artifacts from Moro communities. It is inside the Philippine Women's College campus in Juna Subdivision, Matina, one of the earliest schools in Davao pioneered by the daughter of General Paulino Santos, Rosa Santos Munda. General Paulino Santos is one of those tasked by pre-war President Manuel L. Quezon to open up new lands in Mindanao for settlers from Luzon.

The Davao Historical Society Museum. Here can be found collections on the subjects of dogged documentation made by members of Davao's Historical Society. It is located inside the Magsaysay Park :dunno: .

Along busy road intersections and bridges in the city can be found markers. These are either statues or sculptures that are worth a stop. meron ba???

The Battle Memorial. The place may be a bustling elementary school now (Mintal Elementary School in Tugbok District) but this place is where the longest battle was fought between American and Japanese troops during the Second World War.

Mintal Historical Marker. This is in memory of a Japanese soldier named Colonel Yamada who is said to have defended Mintal District during the war.

Fort of Datu Bago. The unmarked junction of Washington Street and Quimpo Boulevard is a stronghold of a legendary Muslim hero, Datu Bago, who ruled the early settlements along Davao River when it was yet called Tagloc River.

Memorial to a Brave Son. Passersby may hardly notice the marker on the bridge but in this site died a man who defended with his life the territory from Japanese invaders during the Second World War: Governor Armando Generoso. The bridge would later be named after him, in recognition of his gallantry.

Osmeña Park. This may be the perfect place for a leisurely Sunday for Davaoeños nowadays. But this is the site of the settlement of early Davaoeños.

Camp Domingo Leonor. Still referred to as the "barracks" where the Davao City Police Office are headquartered, this served as quarters for Spanish and later American soldiers.

City Hall of Davao. The site is where the former municipal building, constructed in 1926, used to be.

Oyanguren Landing Site. The landing site of Don Jose Oyanguren y Cruz Guipuzcoa, the Spanish conqueror who later became the governor of Davao.

Old Japanese houses. These are Japanese homes, warehouses and abaca processing and drying plants before and during World War II. They can be found in Mintal, Tugbok and Toril districts.

Talomo beach. Some 200 meters from the shore of this public beach frequented by Davaoeños is said to be a 10-kilometer graveyard of a sunken warship during the Second World War. It is in Talomo District.

San Pedro Cathedral. Said to be one of the oldest church in Mindanao, built in 1847. The old altar is preserved at the right wing of the cathedral.

The presence of various places of worship in the city very much describes the cosmopolitan character of the city.

Lon Wa Buddhist Temple. The tranquil environment of candles and trees with an imposing statue of the Buddha and his life depicted in wood carving is said to be the biggest Buddhist Temple in Mindanao. It is found along Cabaguio Avenue.

Mindanao Taoist Temple. Located along Cabaguio Avenue, this temple houses icons of the Taoist religion.

Japanese Peace Memorial Shrine. This is the pilgrimage site for Japanese war veterans and their kin in August, the month of the "Ubon Yasumi," or Japan's version of All Souls' Day.

Mosques. These places of worships among the Moro people in Davao can be found in Bankerohan, Quezon Boulevard, Panacan, Quimpo Boulevard, among others.

Shrine of the Holy Infant Jesus of Prague. Located in Shrine Hill in Matina.

Davao City also has many portals and corridors for the arts. Aside from the established places of artistic showcase -- such as the one inside the Ford Academy of the Arts where the ghost of the touted father of modernism in the Philippine art, Victor Edades, dwells -- there are quite a number of workshops here. Among these are the workshop of Kublai Milan in Ponce Gallery, inside Doña Vicenta Subdivision; and Secuya's in Juna Subdivision, Matina District.

In Davao City, bars and restaurants use the artistic ethnic ambiance, with pieces on their walls and interiors. Malls, hotels and entertainment arcades also have space for art exhibits.

If you are also scouting for vintage as well as contemporary works of arts and crafts, among the places that you can go to are the Gen Luna Gallery along corner General Luna and Ilustre streets, and Nieva's Art and Crafts, one of Davao's premier handicraft stores located at Felbert's Bldg., Km. 7 in Lanang District.

The Aldevinco Shopping Center, an oft-recommended destination for a tourist looking for souvenirs in the city, is an arts and crafts gallery of its own.

In these places, a visitor may also find souvenir crafts of colorful ethnic patterns, house ornaments and accessories, musical instruments and even fashion accessories. (By the way, ethnic fashion -- those dangling earrings, bracelets, necklaces and anklets of beads and brass -- is an all-time fashion favorite in Davao.

If you are planning to explore Davao, be sure to include any of these spots in your itinerary. (Cheryll D. Fiel/davaoatoday.com)

Anyway, if SM backed out, well we still have Robinsons and Ayala bidding out for this property right? So may the best and financially able developer win!

Where is it located? 1 Billion pesos is pretty reasonable if it is strategically located in a commercial district.

If it's 1 billion pesos for 66 hectares or 660,000 sqm, then that property is being sold for just 1,516 pesos per square meter only.

I saw this on-line too. I hope this project would go without much creeps. One thing good though is the mayor's display of high level of confidence for this project and we know that when he is for it, he will be adamant to go for it.

Yan din napansin ko. At least his machismo character works to the advantage of the city.

Oo nga pala last term na nya.

I hope Megaworld would take a look at the LCC property as well. How nice would it be if that large piece of land be turned into an "Eastwood City of the South)" or "South Eastwood City" or whatever. :)

Then we would have two ala Eastwood Cities in Davao :okay: The upcoming Ayala Business Park would be developed ala Eastwood/Serendra.

I rememeber in 2002, Mr. Gotianun was given a walk through by some of his local people at the development site of the then unfinished MTS. A friend of mine who went on to become a concessionaire of the place was there and saw how the real estate mogul was delighted by what he saw. :)

^^ ah ok...but why would robinsons and ayala be interested when they already have properties for their mall expansions here in davao?

Anyway, if SM backed out, well we still have Robinsons and Ayala bidding out for this property right? So may the best and financially able developer win!

this is not sound business ethics. when two parties are about to close a deal, the other party should not back out because others are interested. kung baga walang usapang matino from the seller.

ganito rin ang nangyari sa LCC before with ayala. ayala wanted to buy it. they agreed. then another party was interested with it. they cancelled the sale. the other interested party wasnt interested after all and backed out. LCC went back to ayala. ayala did not want it anymore because the owners of LCC wanted a joint venture.

now its happening all over again. there you see the greed of the seller.

I HOPE THAT ALL INTERESTED BUYING PARTIES WILL BACK OUT IN THE LAST SECOND.

xzibit31
March 15th, 2008, 10:00 AM
Well I supposed they would just have to push through with the expansion of the current mall as initially planned ...

I heard that the start price for LCC is pegged at 1B. I think the greed of the owner of LCC provoked the greed of SM.

What do you mean the greed of SM? there is no greed in the part of SM because they offerd to buy the property at a specific price. they agreed on it. and the last second the seller cancelled because there are others who are interested?

this kind of attitude is what drives investors away from our city. and there are alot of people in our city that have this kind of attitude.

Happy 71st Araw ng Dabaw
to the Goys and Goyettes!

I was at Prime Square in Torres St., Davao City
on Friday, 14 March 2008 -- the start of the 3-day
Araw ng Dabaw festivities -- and to my delight,
the place was brimming with people. My friends
and I came at around 1 am and I had to drive around twice
to find a suitable parking space. At the bar, we had to wait
for about 15 minutes for the waiter to find a table
for us.

Needless to say, Prime Square is the most
happening night spot in Davao, what with its
multitude of bars such as Jickong's, Jikoy's, Bak-Bak,
Barbecue Boss, Manukan at Kambingan, et cetera, and that
relaxed, al-fresco feel which is what Davao-style
"inuman gimmick" is all about. Prime Square also houses restaurants,
cafes with wi-fi connectivity, an a-class KTV Bar and a comedy Bar,
giving enough choices to any gimmick-hungry citizen or visitor.

We stayed at Jickong's that night, and at around 2
AM, in spite of being tipsy, I thought it nice to take
pictures of the place. Hope you like it.

Coed Clothing Co… Its not a souvenir shirt, its an IDENTITY.

http://img301.imageshack.us/img301/2938/limitededitedlabelgl6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Coed Clothing Co. is a new clothing line local to Davao. The products reflect the things around Davao City, from local sports to everyday transportation, from the city streets to the highest peak - basically anything and everything seen, heard, built, created around the city. The designs also showcase all the things that every davaoenyo grew up with. It’s a way of showing the young generations what was hip, what was hot back then and to remind the earlier generations of the glory days.

Coed Clothing Co. products are not souvenir shirts, but an identity. The designs will identify when you were born, where you’re from and what genre you belong.

@Sir Paolo, I thought you were referring the word greed to the owners of SM in your first post. Ahihihihihi. I totally missed it. But I agree with you. The greed of LCC was what made the negotiations crumble. Umabot na rin yan na balita sa amin. As how our CEO even put it, ang presyo kasi ng LCC ay presyong parang ayaw ibenta...

OT. Mindanao's pride, Pacman won by split decision. ^^

But personally, i found his victory unexpected before the winner's announcement was made. The jampacked cinema at the Gateway Mall was even chillingly near-silent after the bout. The opponent was in control for most of the fight except in the 3rd round where he received a crushing pounding from Pacquiao's super-strong left punch. But afterwhich, Marquez dominated him all through-out almost like their first encounter.

IMO, Freddie Roach should have followed their original plan as per their initial press releases wherein allegedly they will go all-out right at the sound of the bell. Marquez obviously won't last Pacquiao's fierce pounding had they gone the other way around, just like what he did to the great Barrera who is also a good counter-puncher.

But then again I'm still happy with Pacquiao's win, as he again made us proud to be a Filipino. :)

More cargo expected with completion of Davao port expansion
Sunday, 16 March 2008 08:42

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/15 March) – A bigger volume of cargo is expected once the Davao Port Expansion Project is completed, Abdussabor Suwadjaan, port manager announced.

Suwadjaan told reoporters Friday that the "volume of cargoes is expected" after the project's completion, which started February last year.

Suwadjaan said currently many exporters especially those from the banana sector, are using the more expensive private ports.

Once completed, he said, these firms are expected to flock to government ports because “it is cheaper.

Cargo handling in private ports is 50 percent higher due to added taxes.

The new port, Suwadjaan said is bigger and deeper, and can accommodate bigger vessels. Other ports are only 10 meters deep while the new port will be 15 meters deep.

The P396-M port expansion is expected to be completed in August this year, five months ahead of its scheduled date of completion.

Cerge Remonde, secretary of the Presidential Management Staff visited the port and said its expansion is one of the priority projects of President Arroyo.

"Ports have a big part to play in the country's economy,” Remonde said. (MindaNews)

O' Flannagan's

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/3421/dsc00076rw3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

It was ages since I set foot at O' Flannagan's. I remember that it was Kadayawan, and just like caged animals - my sister, my cousin, and I were on the loose - HAHAHA! The place was packed with foreigners and it was fun seeing them enjoying themselves. The conversation we had that night was really great and most importantly, that night was declared to be a karneval night. All orders must be karne (meat). A karneval for karnevores! Wheeeeeeeeeee I love carnivals and karnevals! My father will disown me if he reads this.

This time, I'm with Tanya and my sister. Upon entering, I was taken aback since it didn't look like the old O'Flannagan's I once knew. The pub is now shabby and a few of the "abubuts" on the walls were missing. Some of the menus lacked a few pages. A small outdoor section for smokers is now in place in what used to be just a store window. Anyway, we stayed.

For pica-pica, we ordered Chicken wings(P130). I was fantasizing of wings slathered in red chili sauce only to be disappointed with regular deep fried chicken. The menu didn't say it was going to be red hot so it was not my bad nor O'Flannagan's. It was solely the fault of my crazy imagination. In fairness, the chicken was crispy and delicious.

My sister had Fish and chips(P200). The tasty and tender flesh was encrusted in a crispy coating - lovely! The fries were obviously home-made as observed in the cuts and its distinct taste compared to store-bought fries. There was no dip for the fish other than the thousand island dressing on top of the salad and the bottled HP Brown Sauce. It will do but I really prefer Tartar.

Tanya had Chicken Schnitzel (P150) which was chicken with creamy white sauce. I can't remember if this was just sauteed chicken or lightly coated fried. I like the taste of this one too.

My meatloaf looked very basic but it was juicy and packed with flavor(P200). Def a far cry from your canned meatloaf. Does anybody still eat Maling?! Maling used to be a standard breakfast until my father passed a bill.

The living saint for healthy eating (aka my father) proposed that we stop eating canned goods which according to him was for the good of the greater majority. The bill was then passed to my mother. The children reviewed and debated the bill...1st reading, 2nd reading, third reading. Finally, the President (who also happens to be my father and author of the bill) votes on the bill which automatically becomes the law.

The menu offers some of the Irish Classics like Irish Lamb Stew, Corned Beef with Cabbage, Fish and Chips, and Shepherd's Pie. You can opt for french fries, mashed potato, or rice as side dishes.

O'Flannagan's also has a lot of interesting drinks and imported beers like Guinness. Some drinks have racy names like sex, sex machine, and sexy and I was even tempted to try "sexy" but I changed my mind - that would be too much self-love - HARHAR!

I wish they would fix the place up. Nevertheless, the food is good and conversations at O'Flannagan's has always been utterly engaging. Even if I didn't have a drink, I found our conversation that night very interesting! The topic: Men. HAHAHA!

Oh by the way, ST. PATRICK'S DAY is celebrated every March 17th! May the luck of the Irish be yours!
