It's not OT :) Main Place could not carry out the plan because it had no resources to do so. In short, there were not enough investors willing to pour in their money to it.

A competition? I beg to disagree. The Main Place would just be another lifestyle enclave if it was completed. A "The Venue" kind of development in that side of the city. I can still remember that night when it was launched, there was a bubble party with bodies dancing the whole night away, wet and wild! Hmmmm....that was fun! But too bad, the well celebrated launch of the next big party place in the city went to drain!

Mt. Apo 2008 by Rhonson Ng

Just want to share my 2nd climb to Mt. Apo for this year.
Got a call from Action Asia rep of Philippines asking if I can accompany the editor-in-chief of Action Asia. It was a privilege to be his guide and climb buddy. Together with Dong Estapia a veteran apo climber we climb Mt. Apo March 1-3. We were suppose to be joining the sports unlimited group who's also doing a feature on Mt. Apo (Kapatagan Trail) but due to hectic schedule Mr. Steve White (EIC Action Asia) arrived a day late, so we had to catch up with the group who went a day ahead. So what happened was I broke my fastest climbing record in the majestic apo... Mr. White was really a fast climber! What was suppose to be a two day climb up, We did it in SIX AND A HALF HOURS! So we manage to catch up and overtake the group as early as 6:30am! By 11:30 Me, Dong and the two porters were already at the peak!

^^ Nah...no need to apologize! :okay: I was thinking that it would be another mall too. But it's not. The development or construction of buildings within Riverfront now relies to the plan of the lot owners. Sta Lucia will just develop the area; develop the road network, provide electrical connections, etc.

Municipality of Sta. Cruz, Tudaya Falls is the tallest waterfalls in the Mt. Apo Natural Park, dropping 100 meters to a pool that is 50 meters wide. Before the hydroelectric plant access road was built, reaching the falls meant a three hour hike from Kapatagan. Now, after a 30 minute ride from Kapatagan on a dirt bike or a 4x4 truck, it only takes about an hour, following a trail that can be steep and slippery at some points, to reach the bottom of the falls.

I would perfectly understand why Samal has an excellent road network. We all know that Samal hosts world class resort facilities that complement Davao City's cosmopolitan air. Why, Samal even houses the FIRST and ONLY yacht club in Mindanao! So it should not be a wonder why maganda na ang roads doon. Up next, that elusive BRIDGE!

Canada, UK companies find rich mines
By MELODY M. AGUIBA
Manila Bulletin

Two mining companies separately based in Canada and UK have reported positive drilling results of "bulk tonnage" copper-gold in mineral-rich Compostela Valley and increased gold resource at Runruno, Nueva Vizcaya.

"The results of these drill holes have now confirmed a ‘new zone of porphyry style mineralization’ within the overall Tagpura porphyry copper gold mineralization system," said CRC in a statement.

However, Brett Taylor, CRC president and chief executive officer, warned that the immensity of the mining reserve remains a potential.

"It means large but only a potential (yet) as more geological investigation is needed," he said in a phone inquiry.

Tagpura is believed to be highly-mineralized as this in an area within several world-class gold and copper gold-deposits including Diwalwal.

At Runruno, Nueva Vizcaya, London Stock Exchange-listed Metals Exploration PLC (MEP) reported an increase in indicated gold resource to 775,000 ounces, almost double the previous 409,000 ounces, with a grade of 2.41 grams per metric ton (MT), also higher than earlier grade of 2.27 grams per MT.

The report, which complies with international audit standard Joint Ore Reserve Code (JORC), showed that the Runruno gold-molybdenum deposit is estimated to have an indicated and inferred mineral resource of 27 million metric tons (MT) of gold and 36.69 million pounds of molybdenum at 0.062 percent.

"The near doubling of the ounces …is extremely good news. This, combined with the improved gold grade and the increase in certainty,,,underpins the company’s announced commissioning of a detailed (technical and economic) scoping study," said MEP Chief Executive Officer Jonathan Beardsworth in a statement.

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau earlier estimated that Runruno may become a major Philippine mine worth $ 2.5 billion and is particularly big with its molybdenum, a pure metal silvery white in color, fairly soft, and is effective in hardening steel.

It is important in plant nutrition and is found in certain enzymes such as xanthine oxidase. Its price, similar to gold which has considerably increased now hitting to a $ 1,000 per ounce mark, has risen to about $ 25 per pound from $ 2 per pound in 2000.

Runruno is a well-explored site. Fil-am explored it from 1969 to 1972 with a total of 69 diamond drill holes under which it estimated a resource of 13.4 million metric tons (MT) at an average grade of 1.41 gram per MT of gold for a total contained 607,500 ounces of gold. Consolidated Goldfields of Australia in 1974 did separate exploration drillings.

MEL has a separate exploration interests in a former copper-gold producing property in Baguio which was being explored for copper-gold in the 1970s and was originally seen as a potential copper site under a reconnaissance program of MGB in 1967.

The company also has exploration interest in three other projects—Masapelid (70 percent interest), Jaclupan (100 percent) which is within five kilometers away from an underground copper-gold mine of Atlas with a premining reserve of one billion MT with a grade of 0.46 percent copper, and Puray (100 percent) in Rizal.

Puray is believed to contain high-grade and disseminated copper, zinc, silver, and gold similar to the Kuroko producer of copper, zinc, silver, gold, and lead in Canada.

From 1969 to 1981, Eastern Rizal Copper Corp mined out sulphide copper ore in the area and 700 MT of bornite ore of which 200 MT was shipped directly to Japan for smelting. The ore was then assessed to have a grade of 20 percent copper, 5.75 grams per MT of gold, and 196 grams per MT of silver.

Davao dad cautions developers on Maa-Shrine Hills projects

Davao City (20 March) -- "Housing developments in the city are welcome but developers should also make sure that the Cherry Hills tragedy will not happen in the city this time around." Councilor Rachel Zozobrado said. Around 60 people died after a landslide occurred in the slopes of Cherry Hills Subdivision in Antipolo City in 1999.

Crown Communities Subdivision and the DM Consunji-UPDI are presently developing the areas along Maa and Shrine Hills and are facing opposition from the Bgy. Maa Federation of Home Owner Association. The Federation is an association of homeowners whose homes are located below the Consunji and the Crown Communities development projects.

Federation president Teodorico Tinio said the sides of the Shrine Hill area is unstable and is therefore not suitable for subdivision development. The Federation officers and members, who met with Vice Mayor Sara Duterte last January 25, said the instability of the soil poses real danger to the residents in terms of landslide and other mass movement.

"If you look at the Shrine Hills area from Matina you would notice that the natural contour of the hill has been disturbed already," she said.

"I am not an expert on geology but one cannot help but worry about the possible landslide and other negative effects that can result from disturbing the natural flow of the land with the construction of houses and other infrastructure in the area," she added.

Braga said Dabawenyos should make sure that housing and other developments will not be harmful to the people in the long run.

Zozobrado also questioned the act of some developers in selling their properties without permits to do so, citing one developer who has been distributing leaflets and selling their lots during an exhibit at SM City Davao two weeks ago. Crown Communities has however communicated with the Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board and denied it is already in the process of selling. (PR/PIA XI) [top]

EMCOR to offer Western Union® Money Transfer Service in Vis-Min area (http://EMCOR to offer Western Union® Money Transfer Service in Vis-Min area)

EMCOR, a wholly owned Filipino retail chain of household appliances and motorcycles and The Western Union Company (NYSE:WU), a provider of global money transfer services, signed an agreement to offer Western Union Money Transfer services in Visayas and Mindanao.

Davao City based EMCOR is the first retail company to join Western Union’s network of more than 6,400 agent locations in the Philippines. EMCOR has nine existing affiliated companies that produce quality products and services in the motorcycle and household appliance industry. In becoming a Western Union agent, EMCOR will be the first company of its kind in the Philippines to offer remittance services. Being based outside of Metro Manila also strengthens Western Union’s footprint in the Vis-Min area.

“Because our business is in the re-selling of products rather than manufacturing them, the essence of our company’s business operation is high-quality customer service,” said Jesus del Rosario, founder of EMCOR.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]-->“EMCOR’s reputation for excellent customer service and drive for maximum client satisfaction fits well with Western Union’s focus on taking care of our customers,” said Patricia Riingen, Western Union’s vice president for the Philippines. “This partnership gives us the opportunity to reach out to Filipinos in the Visayas-Mindanao area and offer them the same quality service we offer our customers in Manila. By the end of this year, EMCOR will have specially-built Western Union kiosks in 100 EMCOR retail stores for easy access and convenience.”

About EMCOR
EMCOR was founded in 1958 as the franchise dealer for International Harvesters in Mindanao. In 1976, it shifted its product lines to motorcycles and appliances. For the first time, the company will not only offer products but also Western Union services to consumers available in 100 EMCOR retail outlets.

About Western Union
The Western Union Company (NYSE: WU) is a leader in global money transfer services. Together with its affiliates, Orlandi Valuta and Vigo, Western Union provides consumers with fast, reliable, and convenient ways to send and receive money around the world, as well as send payments and purchase money orders. It operates through a network of more than 312,000 agent locations in over 200 countries and territories. Famous for its pioneering telegraph services, the original Western Union dates back to 1851. All 3 Davao bets in for PBB
Published : 2008-03-24
Mindanao Times

DAVAO has the most number of contestants in Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Plus.

The three Davaoeño teens were welcomed in Kuya’s house in yesterday’s premiere.

Fourteen aspirants, including a two-in-one pair, entered the house. A total of 30 teen dreamers were given the keys.

Getting their PBB break yesterday, the Davaoeño entrants were introduced as the Junior Kenkoy ng Davao Nan, the Bubbly Girl ng Davao Jieriel and the Deaf Dreamer of Davao Priscilla.

The skinny Nan, the Peter Pan, is tagged as the happy-go-lucky. He is said to be this season’s Ruben Gonzaga, the comedian from Davao who emerged as the grand winner in the last PBB Celebrity Edition 2.

Jieriel, the Pocahontas girl, is tagged as the Kikay Teen. She is said to be a younger version of Jen, one of the two-in-one pairs in PBB Celebrity Edition 2.

Priscilla, the differently-abled girl, previously got media attention when she won the Davao regional Miss Teen Philippines contest and emerged as the second placer in the national search. Priscilla Mae Navidad was said to have been included in the PBB to show that even those physically-challenged have the right to dream. This early, netizens already predicted Priscilla to be this year’s Kim Chiu, the winner in last edition of PBB Teen.

P1.6B coco extraction plant to rise in Davao
Sunstar Davao

THE National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac) in Davao Region reported that a P1.6 billion coconut sweetener plant would be built in the region by a group of Korean investors.

Nerbac said final stages for the planned multi-billion-peso project are being undertaken by CJ Cheil Jedang Corporation of Korea.

Last month, a five-member investment mission delegation headed by CJ Cheil Jedang Corp. senior executive vice president Jae Ho Lee visited the city to meet with representatives from Nerbac, Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), and other government agencies.

During the visit, the Korean investors presented various arrangements required by the plant.

The delegation said they would need 100,000 tons of cleaned matured coconut shells (13 percent with water content) annually.

Moreover, the Koreans also need assistance in the transportation of raw materials to their plant and the establishment of buying centers.

To assist in their decision-making, the proponents further requested for information on environmental regulations, current buying prices, and investment incentives, the Nerbac monthly report stated.

Trade and Industry Assistant Secretary Merly M. Cruz said the Nerbac, being the investment arm of DTI Southern Mindanao, would do its best to ensure that the project proceed smoothly.

"This is a good start for the region. And since the company needs thousands of tons of coconut for their raw material, this will be a great opportunity for local coconut farmers," Cruz said.

The coconut industry is among Davao Region's Industry Clusters. The Industry Clustering Approach is a development strategy being adopted by the Regional Development Council (RDC) Southern Mindanao in order for the 11 identified industries -- mango, banana, coconut, seaweed, mining, wood, eco-tourism, information and communications technology (ICT), meat and poultry, bio-fuel, and machinery and equipment parts -- to reach their full potential.

Cruz is optimistic the entry of this Korean investment will deliver vast opportunities not only to the coconut industry but to other sectors as well.

PIA Press Release
2008/03/25
Solons validate gov't investments in Davao Region for 2009

Davao City (25 March) -- The Davao Region's Congressmen, Local Chief Executives, Heads of Regional Line Agencies and Private Sector Representatives who comprise the RDC XI Advisory Committee met recently to validate the proposed programs, activities, and projects for FY 2009 that will be funded by the national government and Official Development Assistance. This was disclosed by RDC XI Vice-Chair and NEDA XI Regional Director Nicasio Angelo J. Agustin.

The congressmen who personally attended the meeting were Congressmen Isidro Ungab of Davao City, Nelson Dayanghirang of Davao Oriental, and Marc Douglas Cagas IV of Davao del Sur. Congressmen Rommel Amatong of Compostela Valley, Arrel Olaño of Davao del Norte, and Franklin Bautista of Davao del Sur sent their representatives.

Gov. Douglas Ra. Cagas of Davao del Sur was also present together with the representatives of the other governors of the region. Several regional directors of national government agencies and private sector representatives also attended the meeting.

Agustin said that the RDC XI Advisory Committee chaired by Mr. Vicente Lao of the private sector provided the region's congressmen the venue to validate the proposals of national government agencies, state universities and colleges, and government-owned and –controlled corporations in the region for FY 2009. It also allowed the congressmen to present their comments and recommendations on these proposals.

Among the recommendations of the congressmen include improvement of the Cateel-Compostela Valley Road and the Mabini-Pantukan road section; construction of a new bridge in Baganga, Davao Oriental; abaca production in Davao Oriental; additional assistance of the budget proposal of the Department of Health to provincial and district hospitals; conduct of a study on the flooding problem in Davao del Sur; fast tracking of the release of funds of Department of Public Works and Highways to the congressional districts; and increase and rationalize budget allocation for teacher positions and school buildings.

The congressmen also concurred with the recommendations of the other members of the RDC XI Advisory Committee to improve efforts to increase school enrolment; to establish a regional food terminal under a joint public-private venture; to re-endorse the proposal of UP Mindanao for additional teachers, establishment of a biotechnology facility, and the conduct of a study on the inclusion of agricultural courses in the university's academic programs; and the extension of CARP.

Agustin said that the participation of the region's congressmen in the RDC XI Advisory Committee further strengthens government's development efforts. With the region's congressmen updated on the development direction of the region and regularly consulted for their recommendations, Agustin said that the budget and project proposals of Davao Region would stand a better chance of being fully approved in Congress. When passing through Rancho Palos Verdes in Davao, there was a large golf tournament going on. Here is a picture of some of the players getting ready to tee up. If you haven’t been to Rancho Palos Verdes before, it’s a beautiful place! Probably the nicest golf course in Mindanao, maybe in the Philippines.
