Clearing the whole area is quite a big job and fencing it thus accentuate the JP Laurel Highway Curve. I bet when it is finished, they will have several gates and affect the getting to and "soon to be" hideous traffic. huhu (hinoon dugay pa na):bash:

Oh well, siguro naman the designers of Ayala have already made the necessary adjustments to make their project visually attractive pa rin despite the presence of these buildings. Pero sana lang alisin na sila para the entire stretch (or curve) of the Ayala project has direct access to J.P. Laurel Avenue...

most likely she's telling the truth, you can't just build a three storey building in front of a twelve storey medical center, along thomas claudio boulevard and near illustre.... if i were the owner, i'll optimize plot usage and would build at least a 28 storey mixed-use edifice, imo lang po :cheers:

Summer Chronicles 08-Entry 2

WELL, oh well, here comes another beach story. What do you expect, it's summer and I am a son of a beach! Now more than ever is the perfect time to get up that couch and explore the shorelines of this land of plenty. Yup plenty food, plenty plants, plenty fruits, plenty things to do, blah-blah-blah.


That includes of course, plenty beaches. It was not even summer yet when I started my rounds of Davao beaches and it's not over yet. To those who know me well enough, they must know that the beach is my second home. And the stories will be eternal.

Going with yourself (take note: not "by" myself - a little Oprah moment here) is always great. Quiet time alone, time to meditate, to contemplate. But it is as great as spending the day with a whole bunch of friends. Either way, it's never a dull moment when you are in the company of Mother Nature. But, of course, that's subjective.

Recently, I finally decided to take Jaki D.'s invitation to spend a night at the Dizon's beach house. It was going to be a night with friends. But that plural form was way beyond what I thought it was. It was a gym buddies outing. It was going to be fun.

Close your eyes and think about this named-after-a-Visayan-city-airline flight. What pops into your mind?
Right, our estimated time of departure was hours delayed. Don't take it the wrong way please, it just so happened I am not one of those lucky passengers who have departed on time when taking this airline's hard to resist one-peso offer.

The reasons the ground crew can come up with are simply amazing. If they had a garden, they will have enough flowers for export - that's how flowery they can get.

But on this instance, no matter how late we arrived at the house on stilts by the gulf of Davao, there is always a sense of excitement among the group. There was the unusual eat-all-you-can-chichirya thing even if we all had dinner an hour before. I think it's the sea air, don't you think? Or is it the companion of the late night conversation? Whatever it was, everybody was busy munching on something.

The usual loud music was playing and the foursome game of mahjongg, it was a typical night of the weekenders. I was avoiding to glance at any timepiece. I would like to think that I had enough time of sleep even though if it was a couple hours of shut-eye only. Feeling refreshed the next day, everybody was eager to swim and be engulfed in the gulf of Davao - time for a swim at the vanishing island.

It was my first time in the area as well. Nice. Fun - and I had lots of it. The day was not blessed with a sun shining upon us but we got burned just the same. It is true that it is more dangerous to be outdoors during cloudy days. We seem to neglect that the sun's UV rays still penetrate the screen.

Well, the day was over and time to head home. No delays this time. But if there is another chance to revisit the spot, it would be good to be there on time. Will it make a difference though? As long as you are the company of family and good friends, each minute spent will be quality time... I wish I could say the same with the amount of junk food munched.

Kabataan X-Press on South Spot Davao

KABATAAN X-Press makes its new home in Davao City as part of the lineup of shows in South Spot skycable channel 13.

The groundbreaking youth-produced show is aired every Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. with replays everyday at 7 a.m.

South Spot is a 24-hour lifestyle entertainment cable channel in Davao City that aims to show the different facets of Mindanao.

Among its shows include Muzika del Sur (the country's first music magazine show that tackle Mindanao music scene); Racing Line (Davao City-based motoring show); Talk Mindanao (a talk show tackling socio-economic concerns in the island); Rody Project (a show that recognizes Davao City's outstanding youth); and Guerilla Cinema (a show that features indie and alternative films from Mindanao filmmakers).

Dax Cañedo, South Spot director for channel programming, said he is very happy to have Kabataan X-Press in South Spot.

"I believe in the talents and the capabilities of the Kabataan News Network. In fact some of them I considered as promising filmmakers as they have consistently joined the Mindanao Film Festival," Cañedo said.

Kabataan X-press on South Spot will show selected episodes with Mindanao segments.

"Since South Spot is about Mindanao and consistent with the theme we will feature segments that are produced by the Mindanao Bureaus of KNN (Sarangani Province, Zamboanga del Norte, North Cotabato and Davao City)," Cañedo said.

Kabataan X-Press features segments that are wholly produced by trained youth reporters from Kabataan News Network (KNN) age 13 to 19.

KNN is a network of about 160 young video journalists from 10 different areas from all over the Philippines.

Aside from chronicling more than just what's hip and what's cool, it also looks into major issues that concern young people. The teen prostitution in Davao, girl-to-girl relationships, election issues, the juvenile justice system, mining in Camarines Norte, and the life of Muslims in Manila are just some of the hard-hitting stories that have been featured on the show.

These young journalists are not only given technical training on television production but are also nurtured to become good, ethical and well-rounded citizens.

The Probe Media Foundation is providing the training, while Unicef gives them the necessary equipment like camera, tripod and microphone.

Davao athletes gear up for Beijing

Two Davao athletes who bagged the gold in the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand in December last year will fight it out for the qualifying rounds in Shenzhen, China, for the 2008 Beijing Olympics slated in August.

Shiela Mae Perez, 22, earlier made the city proud by bagging three gold medals in diving during the 23rd SEA Games in 2005. She’s making the city proud again by winning gold in women’s three-meter springboard category in December last year. She and Rexel Ryan Fabriga, 22, who won gold in men’s ten-meter platform synchronized diving during the event, will fight it out in the Shenzhen qualifying rounds for Beijing.

Both Perez and Fabriga also won, apart from their golds, silver in women’s one-meter springboard and in men’s ten meter platform categories, respectively.

They were among the 21 Davao athletes that the city government honored on an April 3 ceremony at the Marco Polo Hotel.

“The game was good and I really prepared for the competition,” said Fabriga of kilometre 10 in Sasa. He said he practiced three times a day to prepare himself for the event.

Perez said she was happy to win gold despite the tough competition. She had to go to Canada and the US for another game before trying out for the Beijing’s qualifying game.

“After we come back, we will start our training,” Perez said.

Anticipating the competition to be tough, Perez said it’s the spirit of winning that matters. She said she was hoping to be on the top twelve in the next Olympics.

“If you would dream, dream big,” Perez said.

The city government hosted a treat to 21 Davao athletes who bagged different prizes from the 24th SEA games in December. Among them, Ruditha Poralan belonged to the 10- member team that won the bronze in the 1,000-meter traditional boat race for women. Her mother Omicita Poralan, 56, said she was very happy with her daughter’s winning.

Although the rigorous training oftentimes kept them apart, she said she didn’t mind because it was the good of her daughter.

Other Davao SEA games medalists included Jho Ann Banayag, who won silver in the women’s marathon; Edmer del Socorro and Ruel Batuto, whose team won silver in baseball; Jhonnel Ababa, whose team also won silver in golf; Amina Anuddin, whose team won silver in a 500-meter traditional boat race for women; Sanita Kasim, whose team won bronze10 in the 1,000-meter traditional boat race for women; Jaime Asok, who won gold in a 10-meter platform synchronized diving for men; Zardo Domenios and Niño Carog who both won silver in the three-meter synchronized diving for men; Zardo Domenios, who won bronze in the three-meter springboard diving for men; Lee Vann Corteza, who won silver in the nine-pool single, billiards and snookers for men; May Ann Basas, who won silver in the six-red snooker and billiards for women; George Vilog, who won silver in men’s triathlon; Richly Magsanay, whose 25-member team won silver in sailing; Ruth Dugaduga who won bronze in the 78-kilogram half heavy judo for women; Frazier Alamara, Norton Alamara and Monsuito Pelenio, whose water polo team won the silver and and Luvelyn Maganda who bagged the gold in team softball.

Lanang Golf course is now a par 71

RIZA Tarrosa and her friends were about to play a par 3, 165 yards long.

Suddenly, out from the trees beside the fairway, a naked guy ran across the open expanse of the fairway. In a gasp, Riza remarked: "I think I know that guy, isn't that Dick Green?" "No" replied another, "I think it's a reflection of the grass!"

Some minor changes in Lanang Golf & Country Club--the 18th hole is now a par 4 once again. The new men's tee mound is at the area where the old ladies' tee mound used to be. And the new ladies' tee mound is further up front and gets the pond on the left out of play, and the tree on the right, the one I hate, it is out of play as well. Yippee! Oh, and they already cut the huge mango tree in the middle of the 18th fairway. (Just kidding!)

For the ones who can reach the 18th green in two before as a par 5, sorry, you cannot make a double eagle anymore. (Jean, if you are reading this, no more worries about the pond!!! Hahaha. Less balls to put in the water.)

I am not sure if I like the setup of the 18th hole better now. Before, where the ladies tee used to be, I had a choice of whether to hit the ball high and go over the tree to the right, or target "middle-left" to avoid the tree. The problem is--if I target a little left, there is a chance that my ball will end up on the left fairway sand trap.

If I target the right side and try to go over the tree and it ends up hitting the tree, I lose distance. But, if I miss the tree or the trap, I can sometimes reach the green in two if I hit a low shot and it passes under the mango tree.

And if I make a slight mistake, it is still easy to reach the green in three--easy putting birdie.

The problem now with the guys is--it's not a par 5 anymore. Now it's a par 4, so if you make a mistake with the drive or the second shot, it's a guaranteed bogey or worse. You will know what I mean the next time you play there.

Another change is the tee mound on the 2nd hole (par 3). The men's front tee is now the ladies' tee. Lanang Golf Course is now a par 71.

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Southern Mindanao is confident that the construction of the Governor Generoso I bridge will be completed before its due date at the rate the contractor has been working on the structure.


An update provided by the DPWH showed that as of April 6, 2008, Ciriaco Construction Corporation, the contractor of the bridge, has already been able to accomplish 69.02 percent of bridge construction while only 40 percent of the contract time has elapsed. :banana:

Construction on the bridge actually started last January 14, 2008 and is to be completed by August 10, 2008, just in time for the city's biggest festival, the Kadayawan. :banana:

The update of the DPWH also showed that the difficult part of the construction, the boring of piles, is almost completed. "Fourteen of the 16 bored piles were already complied with," the update said. :)

At present, the actual skeleton of the bridge can already be seen while work on the bridge starts from early morning daily until late into the evenings daily.

Ciriaco Construction Corporation was the winning bidder of the construction of the Governor Generoso I bridge which collapsed last April 2007.

Ciriaco was able to outbid five other multi-national construction firms with its bid of only P206 million, P10 million less than the original offer price of P216 million by the DPWH. (CPM)

One of the popular catchphrases in Davao during the 80’s. Those were the days!

Before the arrival of the mall-based cinemas in the early 90’s, the likes of Galaxy, Garmon and Lawaan movie theaters were da bomb!

As a kid, my parents usually brought me to Garmon to watch our favorite Stallone movies. Unfortunately, we usually couldn’t finish the movie because my younger sister ends up crying inside the movie house. What a shame.

Back then, the “doubled with” promo was the norm for these old movie houses. This means you get to watch two movies by paying for just one ticket. The “pakapin” movies are usually the B types though.

I also remember this nightly or weekly tv spot at RPN-9 where all the movies being shown at each cinema are previewed. The iconic line “Relax and watch a movie” is usually shown at the end of each program.

Anyways, here’s a list of some old Davao-based cinemas from the 80’s.

Davao bets rule table tennis

AFTER attending church on Wednesday night officiated by Archbishop Romulo Valles of Zamboanga, the Davao Region athletes were inspired the next day and that included the women's table tennis team that won this year's national crown.

Thanks to Jacqueline Caragao, Debby Kate Mascardo, and Mirabel Roferos of Holy Cross of Davao College and Jocelyn Enaro of the University of Mindanao, it was another great ride for Davao.

The Davao players defeated Western Visayas Region, represented by University of St. La Salle-Bacolod City and University of San Jose-Recoletos, in the women's table tennis finals, 2-0.

Caragao crushed Ruby Ann Longno in the first singles, then Mascardo and Roferos in the doubles, leaving last singles player Jocelyn Enaro without dropping a sweat.

During the elimination round, the Davao bets bested Calabarzon Region, then Western Mindanao, and then Central Visayas and blanked Bicol Region, 2-0, in the crossover semifinals.

The women's team lost to the same team last year in Iloilo City to settle for silver but came back with a vengeance this year.

Coach Omar Mabiscay said they formed a better team this year compared to last year and, luckily, with the entry of Roferos of Holy Cross of Davao College and Enaro of the University of Mindanao, the team was able to push through despite the training of just two weeks.

Just when I thought I’ve heard about all the beautiful resorts here or near Davao … along came CRASH LANDING RESORT!

Last Saturday (April 12, 2008), we had the opportunity to visit one of Mindanao’s best kept secrets courtesy of my cousin Kaka Bebe, who just turned a year “wiser” last weekend. Crash Landing Resort is located in Darong, Sta. Cruz, which is not too far away from the confines of Davao City. It takes about 40 minutes or so to reach the place from city proper, depending on traffic conditions.

This one looks like those buses of the Bukidnon Bus Company that serviced the Bukidnon to Davao route in the early 70s. I remember the rickety one we rode on when we left Linabo, Malaybalay back to hometown Davao in 1974. :)

Then sa mga succeeding batches pwede na kahit walang experience as long as they meet the criteria.

for me, i think both...here in australia...call centers are not that common (or not really common) thats why there are lots of call centers in the philippines and even in india..not just because of mura lang ang salary dyan..its also because filipinos are known to be good in english if not the best in asia...and experienced naman is important because for me thats the only way employers may see you, you're capable of handling such job specially pag international account hinahawakan ng agent..hirap kaya intindihin english nila lalo na pag slang..you know...

RDC-11 categorizes hub strategy for Davao Region

Davao City (15 April) -- The Regional Development Council has categorized the five provinces of the Davao Region on sectors or hubs that best represent them.

Vicente Lao, chair of the Regional Development Council who is also Mindanao Business Council chairperson said at the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday at SM City that given such will further help spur development of their specified industries.

He said this will also allow government line agencies provide the necessary support but what these areas would really need are infrastructure projects.

He said once these support facilities will be available in the area the other sector would be avail to make use of them either it be on mining, agriculture, tourism.

"We need a lot of intervention in the form of infrastructure like farm to market roads and irrigation system for the region to take off," he said.

Setting up of cold storage chain is also important for the region to preserve the shelf life of fruits and other agricultural products as well as come up with processing facilities to processed these products and thus increase farmers produce.

Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley Province that felt they are being left out or out of the loop from the rest of the provinces in terms of industry development Lao said these areas are being declared as the mineral hub of Region XI.

He said these areas are with rich mineral deposits like Diwalwal in Compostela Valley and mining is a good industry to develop there.

The other areas of the region he said namely, Davao del Norte is for agri-hub, Davao City on tourism and IT, Davao del Sur, sugarcane and mangoes.

As far as Diwalwal is concerned, he clarified the earlier issue on ZTE to operate in the area is not true.

HOS, the next attraction in Igacos

HOS is not yet a well-known tourism acronym. It will soon be. It stands for Holiday Oceanview Samal. It is the next attraction, a great tourism destination in Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos). This newest exciting real state development is the first of its kind in Mindanao.

HOS is more than seven hectares of prime development located at Ilihan, Babak district, Igacos. Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) table paddler Jacqueline Caragao, who had a short stint as RP junior player, lost to Central Visayas bet Gloria Belandres (0-3) in the women's singles titular clash. Bicol Region settled for third.

Caragao breezed through the finals after beating her Western Visayas rival, 3-1 and winning on the same note against a Southern Tagalog-4A opponent, 3-1.

Re: Experienced agents. I think CallBox is targetting the "experienced" agents from Davao who are (or were) employed in the call centers in Manila and Cebu (and elsewhere). A lot of call center agents, team leads/supervisors, managers, and IT personnel who work/ed for these call centers are rearing to go back home to Davao provided there's good employment opportunity in our city. CallBox, along with other big names in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, and including the newer, smaller ones, are the "good employment opportunity" they have been waiting for.

The years you have worked in the BPO or Contact Center Industry. In the case of my new company which is relatively new here in the Philippines as well, they only entertain those who have enough "international" callcenter experiences and preferably those who's been in the industry for 6 months or more. Call center hoppers are big no no! So maybe ganun din ang Callbox.

for me, i think both...here in australia...call centers are not that common (or not really common) thats why there are lots of call centers in the philippines and even in india..not just because of mura lang ang salary dyan..its also because filipinos are known to be good in english if not the best in asia...and experienced naman is important because for me thats the only way employers may see you, you're capable of handling such job specially pag international account hinahawakan ng agent..hirap kaya intindihin english nila lalo na pag slang..you know...

I think another reason why alot of customer support operations are being done from the Philippines because of our flexibility especially when it comes to the accent. We may have a think Filipino accent but when we get to expose ourselves to other culture, in someways, although hindi sinasadya, somehow we adapt to their accent accent. Bombays or those in India can barely do that. Although, they are good with providing technical support, they suck when it comes to customer support. And darn, baskin unsaon nila og accent neutralization training, indians would always sound as an indian.

Hmmmm....I was with PS too for almost four years...then i left ehehehehe.....now im with the better one. She is located where? PS Makati? PS Baguio? PS Cebu? hmmmm conceited? d naman cguro, i think one of the traits that call center agents would develop as time goes by is their assertiveness (well not all but most) and frankness. U cant blame them naman coz we need those traits to deal and handle irrate and some irritating customers. Ilang months or years na ba sya in the industry? The Board of Directors is set to have a meeting during the second quarter of the year (ibig sabihin ngayon ngayon na) to finalize the plans. In the meantime, the guy who entertained my call told me to go their office to fill out an Information Sheet so that they can contact me (disguised as an interested unit buyer) as soon as the plans have been ratified by the board. DAVAO CITY, April 15 --A P3-billion shopping complex and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) park jointly operated by two business giants is planned for construction here before 2012, it was learned.

The complex will be located at the Floirendo-owned nine-hectare property on J. P. Laurel Avenue, according to Javier D. Hernandez, senior division manager of Ayala Malls Group. The project will employ at least 5,000 workers.

The Ayala Center of Davao of the Ayala Land Holdings, Inc and the Anflo Management and Investment Corporation (Anflocor)inked a memorandum of agreementr in November 29 last year, according to Ricardo R. Floirendo, Anflocor South Operations senior vice president.

Hernandez said that by 2012, the mall shall be fully operational. The first phase is scheduled for completion in 2009, with two buildings for call center locators.

Under the agreement, the Ayala Malls Group will develop the property into a mini city, including the two-hectare ICT park which will house the call centers.

The Makati-based Ayala conglomerate, considered the oldest company in the country, will also bring locators to the project, Floirendo added.

The mall has a garden, allowing shoppers to enjoy the scenery even as they dine and shop.

“The place will allow people to go and eat there and at the same time shop for high-end consumer products,” Floirendo said.

The project was a fruit of a six-month study and eventual negotiations between the two companies, he added.
Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte expressed full support of the project, saying it will add to the economic progress of the city. (

Re: Experienced agents. I think CallBox is targetting the "experienced" agents from Davao who are (or were) employed in the call centers in Manila and Cebu (and elsewhere). A lot of call center agents, team leads/supervisors, managers, and IT personnel who work/ed for these call centers are rearing to go back home to Davao provided there's good employment opportunity in our city. CallBox, along with other big names in the Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry, and including the newer, smaller ones, are the "good employment opportunity" they have been waiting for.

The Spirit of Tinubdan

Trust the Ayalas to do things in style in appealing toMindanaoans to take pride in their very own cultural heritage. The Ayalas, with their unflappable will and creative soul, launched last April 10, 2008, their newly created Tinubdan. The Tinubdan is a cultural park occupying over 3,000 square meters within the Eden Natural Park and Resort. The impressive village is conceived as a wellspring of Mindanao culture.

Tinubdan is said to be derived from the root word “tubod” which means spring or origin of water. “Tinubdan is the tubod of indigenous wisdom, a dynamic tour designed to give viewers glimpses of the customs, traditions, beliefs and the way of life of the indigenous peoples of Mindanao,” explained the anthropologist Nestor Horfilla, the former Chair of the Committee on Dramatic Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, 2004 Gawad CCP Awardee, 2006 Patnubay sa Sining Awardee and the founder of the Kaliwat Theatre Collective. Horfilla has made a name for himself as an event organizer in Davao who was honorably given the name Datu Pinahan-ay by the City Government of Davao.

“Tinubdan is Eden’s response to the clamor for peace and understanding in a multi-cultural society,” Vida Maya Ko, the Special Assistant to Chairman Jesus V. Ayala, told the guests. The talented Ko won the first runner up award in the Mutya ng Dabaw 2008 beauty contest.

The cultural journey into the heartland of indigenous wisdom started at the First Level, the Gateway, where the launching ceremony was held. It features the Peniyaawan, a courtyard where members of communities meet and where the Bagani or protector stands guard and ensures the survival of the people. The ceremony was started with a prayer said by Datu Kib Motom of the B’laan tribe. The ritual involved water from a tubod, the most basic of elements and the source of life itself. The water ceremony was truly something different with the participation of Ms. Fe Ayala and the honorable Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz representing Mayor Duterte.

“Tinubdan is now officially inaugurated. Today is a historical day as it marks the opening of doors towards deeper cultural understanding for us Davaoeños,” announced the emcee after which the guests were led to the next level. The Second Level is the area which offers a view of tribal life. It consists of the Tana-Tanaman (Welcome Garden) which is a visual delight adorned with life-size sculptures of children from the different tribal communities. On display as well are smaller versions of the Balay-Kalimudan (Datu’s House) and the Bebalay-balyan (Shaman’s House). There is also a Lumadnong Tambal or the Herbal Medicinal Garden which exhibits various plant species used by the tribal communities for medicinal and healing purposes.

Guests were seated at the Pasundayagan, an amphitheater for performances and educational briefings. Shortly after, Undoy, a child chanter from Talaingod appeared and a performance of the myth of the Lumad Creation was shown to the guests.

Next came the welcome speech of Mr. Rafael Ayala, the Tinubdan Project Manager. Introduced to the guests as well were Nestor Horfilla, Tinubdan’s artistic and resource person; and Zaldy C. Magnaye, the Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Eden mountain resort. Zaldy C. Magnaye, in the presence of President Miguel M. Ayala and Chairman Jesus V. Ayala, awarded plaques of appreciation to both Nestor T. Horfilla “for his invaluable contribution of creative energy and scholarly work;” and Arch. Edmundo M. Viacrucis “for his creative energy and architectural expertise.”

To end the happy occasion, children performed indigenous dances for the special guests which included Consul General of Malaysia and Mrs. Nik Mustafa Kamal Nik Amad, Madam Mitsuya of the Japanese Consulate, Mike M. Ayala, Lani M. Ayala, lawyer Wendel Avisado, Mabel Sunga Acosta, Rachel Zozobrado, Susan Isabel Reta, Tessie Mata Marañon, DATA President Angel Puentespina and Alex Divinagracia, to mention a few.

may SB na rin sa ciudad de davao?mas ok ata ang SB para sa mga aussies @dinabaw...kasi the husband of my auntie who is a pure australian,,,mas hinahanap nya ang SB eh...and all SB here are mas class ang dating kaysa sa GJ...but in terms of number of branches, GJ got more branches than SB..maybe mas mahal ang franchise ng SB kaya ganun..

So so so.....eheheheheh were those calls from pinoy agents? anyway, there's alot of callcenters in the country doing outbound operations. And I believe there are some which are located in Davao as well. Mabola ang mga pinoy..naturally! Kaya when it comes to outbound/sales account, normally malalaki ang sales ng mga pinoys! :okay: I believe the new centers in Davao (Callbox, Sitel, and Sutherland) are handling inbound accounts.

well, i always ring my mobile phone network provider(optus) and parating indian ang nakakasagot...i can't understand what they're saying..i just always say "pardon please","can u say it again"...i dunno... they have that certain accent that is "badly unique" from them...hehehe.
