davaob4now April 23rd, 2008, 05:11 PM It's in CNN kanina, i will quote "Philippine Airlines, one of Asia's oldest airline is planning to enter the low fare arena, which has been started by its regional competitors, since it cannot expand its services to the US because of the category 2 rated by the US aviation authority for the philippines' airports"...
so, makikipag compete na tlga ang PAL sa CEB, hindi lang sa CEB kung di sa mga regional wings ng mag big international airlines like Silk air, dragon air etc.na nag ooffer ng murang airfares, so lets fly up up and away..PAL was planning to put a direct flight from manila to New york(actually it has before) but for the reason that US authorities rated the philippine airports as category 2 from category 1, it would be hard for the PAL to penetrate NY and the rest of the US.
davaob4now April 23rd, 2008, 05:15 PM btw nasa DIA ako kanina grabe ang interval ng PAL flights from Manila 30minutes lang!
it will be busier if the CEBPAC dvo-hk and dvo-singa flights will start this MAY...do you think mga goys, DIA could cater more flights?i think it needs expansion...

Do you remember when the politician Perfecto Rasay told Mayor Digong in his tv program, that DIA is architecturally imperfect...???dami daw mga faults sa constructions...di daw siya ma shock if one day DIA will need a huge renovation...galit na galit ako sa kanya that time 'cos may possibility nag e close muna ang airport...just like what happened sa Dome, sabi ni mayor may mga faults daw sa construction kaya na tigil, (if i know its purely political)hehehe.

wag naman sana for closure for good...kasi dalawa na sila magka tabi ng durian hotel na mgging stagnant na lng...sana nga bibilihin ng SM or baka Rob, dahil may rumor dati na e take over ng Rob, well way back college life. or baka na realize nila na they need to renovate it...sana nga...sayang ang mga memories...

Pinay bags $10,000 in McDo singing tilt
By Jayson Cruz Luna, Reporter
Now she has some big things to show that a small country like hers can produce singing sensations faster than the world can say, “To go.”
Margaret Yu of Davao sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” at the recent “Voice of McDonald’s 2008” in Orlando, Florida, and came out as first-runner up. She got a standing ovation and $10,000.
Yu, 22, was among 3,600 contestants from McDonald’s stores in 118 countries. A worship leader who sings in a church choir in Davao, she said she dedicated her winning song to God.
Natercia Pintor of Portugal won the grand prize.
The judges, evidently, were impressed with what they had heard, said juror and multi-platinum artist Ne-Yo. “I was blown away by the talent. They [contestants] brought the house down. It was really difficult to choose a winner. I applaud McDonald’s for doing this.”
Two of the other judges were Jody Gerson, co-president of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Ken Hertz, LLP senior partner.
Two other Filipinos made it to the semifinals—Canada-based Candido Revilles, who eventually placed third, and Yu’s best friend, Paulina Susan Bacarat, also from Davao.
The contest is the biggest singing competition of its kind for 1.6 million McDonald’s employees from around the globe and from more than 30,000 restaurants in over 100 countries.
Yu and Bacarat will be the international fast-food chain’s singing ambassadors. They will help raise funds for McDonald’s Charities, which looks after poor children in the Philippines.

Filinvest eyes second Davao condo project, to copy Ortigas condo venture in M. Manila
Gotianun-led Filinvest Land, Inc. is investing up to P2 billion in a second condominium project in Davao City, as it expects no letup in demand.
The company is also looking at replicating its One Oasis project within Metro Manila in a bid to boost its entry in the mid-rise building market and expand its geographical reach.
The property firm expects a good response from the market despite the weaker purchasing power of families who receive dollar remittances from relatives working abroad, Davao City branch manager Allan J. Barquilla said.
The project, a three-hectare condominium complex, will be the company’s second in the city after the 2.3-hectare One Oasis near SM City Davao.
Filinvest Land Manager Geraldine C. de Gorostiza said details of the new project would be announced soon. Construction is expected to start towards the end of the year.
Filinvest’s One Oasis project, first to rise on a four-hectare lot along Ortigas Avenue Extension in Pasig City, is composed of 11 five-storey residential buildings and two business process out-sourcing buildings.
The company started construction of One Oasis Ortigas last year, but it did not disclose the development cost.
Meanwhile, One Oasis Davao is made up of seven medium-rise buildings, to be developed over three to four years. Construction of the first two buildings will start next month.
In a briefing in Davao, Ms. de Gorostiza said the second condominium would likely attract buyers, judging by previous sales.
She said the company’s first condominium project here was sold out in six months after its introduction.
As a result, Filinvest Land is intensifying its property ventures in the city where it has five ongoing projects.
Aside from the second condominium project, the company is looking at other properties within and outside the city for development.
Ms. de Gorostiza said they might enter General Santos City where they have bought a 120-hectare property.
She said most of the buyers of upscale properties in the city are from other areas, particularly Central Mindanao and the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao.
Mr. Barquilla said almost three-fourths of the inquiries the company had received about its first condominium project were from people living outside Davao City.
Ms. de Gorostiza said people want to live in the center where they work. Outsiders who want to buy properties either have business deals or children who study in Davao.
"It would be better to develop a project that will cater to these people," she said.
In Manila, FLI Chief Finance Officer Nelson M. Bona said the company would be offering the One Oasis project in two new areas in the Metro, but declined to be specific.
Mr. Bona noted that with the completion of the first two residential projects in One Oasis Ortigas, they were likely to raise P500 million in revenues.
"But we’re not departing from our business model which is basically [catering to the] middle-income [class]. We’re still focused on the affordable and middle-income market because that’s the more sustainable market," he added.
One Oasis Ortigas units are soled as studio, one-bedroom and two-bedroom types that cost P1.3-P2.5 million. Filinvest Land said the centerpiece of the project will include a clubhouse, pool, basketball court, children’s playground and meditation garden.
Filinvest Land, one of the real estate arms of holding firm Filinvest Development Corp., has allocated P6 billion for the development of 36 new projects and expansion of existing ones this year.
In a separate interview, Filinvest Land Investor Relations Officer Annabelle Arceo said projects to be expanded include The Aborage at Brentville, Highlands Point in Filinvest East County, Alta Vida and Sunrise Place. — CQF and LNPL

Ayala to finish construction of Davao complex in four years
DAVAO CITY — Ayala Land Holdings, Inc.’s first major venture in the city, an upscale mixed-use commercial complex, is expected to be completed by 2012.
Javier D. Hernandez, Ayala Malls Group senior division manager, said the company would invest about P3 billion on the project and start construction on a nine-hectare land within the year.
The shopping mall is a joint project with Anflo Management and Investment Corp. (Anflocor) of the Floirendo family, which owns the property.
Mr. Hernandez, who presented the blueprint of the project to Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte at the Marco Polo Hotel last week, said the project would require about 5,000 workers.
Two buildings that will be finished next year will house information and communications technology facilities.
Ricardo R. Floirendo, vice-president for South Operations of Anflocor, said earlier Ayala intends to bring to the city a couple of contact center firms.
In November, Ayala and Anflo Management signed a memorandum of agreement for the development of the property, about two kilometers north of the city’s central business district.
The property will be converted into a "mini-city" that will include a two-hectare IT park, commercial spaces and townhouses. — CQF

Summer is the perfect time to climb mountains since you are almost always assured of perfect weather.
All you need are some sun block, a pair of sturdy legs, reliable climbing equipment, and trekking buddies you can trust and you’re good to go. Here are some places you can visit if you are interested in hiking and the great outdoors:
Apo – The highest mountain in the country at 2,954 meters is one of the most popular hiking destinations. The breathtaking view is not the only thing that draws climbers all over the Philippines to attempt touching its peak, the lush rainforest that surrounds you as you trek up the mountain makes it worth the visit. The diverse terrain, from mossy forest floor to jagged rocks, gives its visitors a chance to experience various ways of hiking. Mt. Apo is also one of the few remaining places where you can spot the famous Philippine Eagle.
Situated between Davao Del Sur and North Cotabato, one can reach Apo’s summit through different routes. You may go up via the Kidapawan trail which most climbers agree is the easiest route or challenge yourself using the Kapatagan trail which will take two to three days to trek.
Pulag – Mt. Pulag or Pulog is the highest point in Luzon. Situated at 2922 metres, this mountain is considered by many as the most photogenic of all the mountains. As you climb up the mossy forest and walk the winding trails along the grassland area, virtually every sight is postcard ready. Once you reach the camp, prepare for the early wake-up call as the sunrise in Pulag cannot be missed.
Pulag is located between the borders of Benguet, Ifugao and Nueva Ecija and boasts one of the coldest climates in the country. You definitely need to bring warm clothing as temperature can drop in the single digits. There are three ways up the mountain – the Akiki trail, Vizcaya route and the easiest one, Ambangig trail. Since its declaration as a National Park in 1987, strict enforcement of Leave No Trace principle (see below) has been effected. Most locals also consider Pulag as a sacred mountain.
Kanlaon – Its being one of the most active volcanoes in the country that does not only stop mountaineers from visiting Kanlaon. The highest peak in the Visayas region, this mountain takes its name from an ancient god and means "He Who is Ruler of Time". Rich in biodiversity, the volcano is home to endemic fauna such as the Philippine spotted deer and flora such as Rafflesia speciosa, a member of the world’s largest flower.
Situated in Negros Island, Kanlaon can be ascended using different trails that have different levels of difficulty. Using the Wasay-Guintubdan trail is recommended as it passes the attractions of the mountain such as lagoons and huge dipterocarps. It makes for a challenging climb as it is full of natural obstacles such as tree trunks and massive roots. For an easier route, you may try the Mapot-Masulog trail which will take you to the summit in less than two days.
Climbing Kanlaon requires DENR approval as it is active and considered dangerous.
Tarak – A relatively easy trek with a fantastic view at the campsite, Tarak Ridge in Mariveles, Bataan is a favorite of Manila climbers. About five hours by bus from Manila, this mountain offers a clean river known as Papaya, where one can swim and get drinking water for the climb.
There is an option to assault Tarak’s summit which is about thirty minutes from the campsite. However, the real beauty of the mountain is camping on its ridge, where you have a 270 degree view of the surrounding areas such as Corregidor, Manila Bay and Cavite. Make sure tents are securely pegged as it can get really windy at night.
You may get in touch with one of the local mountaineering groups in Bataan, the Dong-in Outdoor Society, to know more about Tarak.
Pinatubo – One of a few ways you can swim in a volcano’s crater (Taal being another popular
Mount Pinatubo (photo by Dennis

one) is to go to Mt. Pinatubo. Famous for its high-impact eruption in 1991, this volcano has become a must-visit destination for mountaineers as it is the only mountain where you can see a seemingly endless expanse of volcanic ash. Steep fees may be a deterrent to some but the photogenic site when you reach the crater more than makes up for the price.
Located in the intersection of Zambales, Tarlac, and Pampanga, the only way to reach the crater is by a 4X4 vehicle and two hour trek. Once you reach the crater lake, you may opt to swim along the banks or just revel in the beauty of the place.
Guiting-guiting – Even at only 2,058 meters, Guiting-guiting is still considered as one of the most difficult and technical mountains to climb in the Philippines due to a jagged ridge that will take one whole day to climb and descend. Situated in Sibuyan Island, Romblon, this mountain has seen four climbers from the UP Mountaineers die in 1985. Due to the dangerous assault to its summit especially during bad weather, many mountaineers have been forced to turn back and abandon the attempt.
Even with the danger posed to climbers, Guiting is still a popular destination especially during summer months as it is quite gifted with diverse flora and fauna. Here you can see a wide variety of orchids, birds, and one of the smallest bats in the world, the endemic Sibuyan Pygmy Fruitbat. Recently however, this majestic mountain has become threatened by mining companies wanting to excavate as it is said to be rich in nickel and gold.
Please be reminded that this mountain is for experienced climbers only.
Daguldol – Daguldol is only one of several mountains in the Batangas area. At merely 672 meters, it is a Level 1 or easy climb. The main attraction of this climb is the panoramic view on one of its peaks where one can see the neighboring mountains such as Malipunyo and Banahaw and on a clear day, even the island of Marinduque. Another plus is the jump-off point which is located on the beaches of Laiya, which is famous for its white sand.
Located in Brgy. Hugom, San Juan, you can reach Daguldol by either taking the bus or renting a jeep.
Mount Tapulao (Photo by Sally
Cabral)
Tapulao – Often called "Poorman’s Pulag", Mt. Tapulao or High Peak is part of the Zambales mountain range. At 2, 037 meters, it is often compared to Mt. Pulag since part of the trek showcases pine trees and cool weather. Going up the mountain can be extremely daunting especially for beginners as there is a long stretch of exposed trail and you are unprotected against different elements. However after a few hours up the trail and you will reach the rainforest and then after some more trekking, the pine forest. When you assault the summit, the terrain will turn into a mossy forest.
The roads are wide enough for a 4x4 vehicle to pass through as Tapulao is open for mining activities. However, due to unstable road conditions during bad weather, vehicles are rarely used to climb up the mountain. It is also highly advisable that you wear sunscreen during the summer as the trek under the hot sun will last for hours. Bring a thick jacket as it can get really cold at night.
Makiling – Makiling is popular due in part to the Philippine folklore of Maria Makiling, who is said to be the guardian of the mountain. Located in Laguna, it is an inactive volcano famous for its mud springs and pristine forests.
There are two ways up this mountain; one is through the Los Bańos side and the other using the Sto. Tomas route. The Los Bańos side is the easier path but as of the moment, this route is closed due to efforts to "rehabilitate" the trails. The Sto. Tomas side is open but is a bit trickier as there are parts that require you to hold on to ropes as you climb a wall. Also, the trails can be confusing as they are not as established as the Los Bańos side. It is thus advisable that you climb this route with someone who has been to the area or you can try to arrange for a guide in Brgy. San Miguel.
Sierra Madre mountain range – The Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the country. The range starts from Cagayan (North) and ends in Quezon (South). The mountains that form the Sierra Madre are considered to be one of the densest and richest in terms of biodiversity in the Philippines. Five mountains, all located in the province of Aurora are open for you to explore with different difficulty levels for novice and hardcore climbers alike. These are:
a. Pamaza-pazam – Pamaza-pazam means "alluring" for the Ilongot tribe in Aurora. That said, the mountain is indeed enchanting as different forms of pitcher plants and other flora greet you on the trail. This is a major climb and must be hiked by experienced mountaineers only.
b. Udok – This is one of the easier climbs in Aurora as the jump-off point is the Aurora State College of Technology and the trek is over rolling slopes from there. The presence of different birds such as hawk eagles, hornbills, owls and sparrows makes this fun trek memorable.
c. Danayag – Another major climb with reported endemic monkeys greeting you along the trail. A 140 feet high-waterfall called Ditumabo is a highlight of the trek.
d. Pinondohan – The trek prior descending towards the campsite is of average difficulty but what makes this climb challenging is holding on to a rope made of ‘baging’ and deciding where to step as you manager your way down to Camp Vanessa. The campsite is beside the river and is a few meters away from several falls.
e. Maaling-aling – One of the highest peaks in the Sierra Madre at 1,885 meters and the most difficult of the five. Main attraction is the picturesque Magdalena Falls.

i guess it's not part of the 7 buildings because 1.5 billion ang press release nila sa project na yan di ba. now with 2 billion for this new project, klaro na hindi sa SM area kasi sinabi sa news na "The project, a three-hectare condominium complex, will be the company’s second in the city after the 2.3-hectare One Oasis near SM City Davao."
I agree with kuya junax. This is a different project. It is clear from the news itself.

Filinvest eyes second Davao condo project, to copy Ortigas condo venture in M. Manila
Im quite confused, if the second condo project in Davao would be a replica of the Ortigas condo venture ng FLI, they are referring to One Oasis Ortigas. It is the only condo venture of FLI in Ortigas area right now.
So it's an ala One Oasis complex in Ortigas nga...But we already have one in Davao....is the author talking about the same project?
The project, a three-hectare condominium complex, will be the company’s second in the city after the 2.3-hectare One Oasis near SM City Davao.
Hmmmm...so it would be a second condo complex? Or is there a typo error? could the author be referring to the second condo building only within One Oasis Davao complex? Sold out na ang first building. Could he be referring to the second condo building which is on a preselling stage today?
Filinvest Land Manager Geraldine C. de Gorostiza said details of the new project would be announced soon. Construction is expected to start towards the end of the year.
hmmmmmm then it could be a second project then. And it could be different from ONE OASIS DAVAO.
In a briefing in Davao, Ms. de Gorostiza said the second condominium would likely attract buyers, judging by previous sales.
She said the company’s first condominium project here was sold out in six months after its introduction.
The entire One Oasis Davao condo complex has not been sold out. It's only the first condominium building within the complex which has been completely sold out. The preselling stage of the second condo building has just started. Hmmmmmmm.......could it be possible that the author is just referring to the second condo building within One Oasis Davao and not an entirely separate or different project?
tj_brewed April 24th, 2008, 01:18 AM place your bets folks ! where the 2nd Filinvest ? i guess it's Lanang Golf & Country Club mwahaha

DexterTexter April 24th, 2008, 01:20 AM ^^ OMG this got me excited this early in the morning. I wouldn't need a coffee fix anymore!
@Sir Neyo... I don't think i'd be able to catch a glimpse and take photos on the groundbreaking of One Oasis. I'll be in Manila on Friday po :(. I hope the other SOCO Goys will do that task. :)
Re: Victoria Plaza... it's closure would be unfortunate and sad. But hopefully someone or some entity will revive it to its former glory. Notwithstanding the Ayala Invasion, i think Victoria Plaza still has great potentials, and it also holds a special place in the hearts of Dabawnons. Ngek, bat nag senti agad! LOL. Concerned po ako sa mga other commercial establishments in and around VP (e.g., Basti's, Ah Fat, Buhda, Probinsya, Sili't Gata, Calle Cinco, etc.)... I wonder if they will be closing down as well.

Davao Region railway feasibility study pushed for completion within the year
The Business World
DAVAO CITY — The vice-chairman of the regional development council in the Davao Region expects the feasibility study for a Davao Region railway system to be finished this year.
Nicasio Angelo Agustin, also regional director of the National Economic and Development Authority, said the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP) was tasked to commission the feasibility study for a 100 kilometer-long railway system that will connect Davao del Sur, passing by Davao City, to Davao del Norte.
The Davao railway system was proposed in late ’90s by a Japanese consultant who drafted a long-term infrastructure program for the region which also includes a bridge connecting this city to the Island Garden City of Samal. DIDP is a development strategy to be executed by the local governments of Davao City and the provinces of Davao, Davao del Sur and Davao Oriental.
Davao del Norte Governor Rodolfo del Rosario heads the program. "Hopefully the feasibility study will finish [sic] in one year and we can start the process of evaluation next year," he said, adding that evaluation of the project could take one to four years.
Financing
Mr. Agustin said a Chinese company has already informed the council of its interest to bankroll the project, but the body has yet to decide what financing scheme to follow, whether build-operate-transfer, joint venture, or primarily private investment.
DIDP signed on Dec. 19 last year a memorandum of agreement with the Mindanao Business Council and the MCC Capital, a London-based financing agency, to conduct the feasibility study.
Earlier, House Speaker Prospero C. Nograles said the Mindanao railway system, a separate project, will be one of his priority projects, adding that while he could not guarantee the ambitious project will be realized, "I will give it my best shot." He said Mindanao representatives had signed a resolution to make the system a priority.
While the Davao railways system was proposed by Japanese consultants in late ’90s, the Mindanao railway system was proposed by Mindanao leaders in early ’90s.
During the 15th Senior Officials Meeting of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA) in October of last year, Faisal Kasim, MCC chief executive officer, discussed the project with the BIMP-EAGA Business Council Chairman Antonio R. Santos, Jr. and Mindanao Business Council Chairman Vicente T. Lao.
Mr. Kasim, Mr. Santos said, had proposed a joint-venture arrangement despite Davao businessmen’s preference for a built-operate-transfer scheme. Under Mr. Kasim’s proposal, local government units hosting and benefitting from the project will shoulder 60% of costs to build the railway system, while MCC will pay for the remaining 40%. — J. B. Escovilla

Engelbert beat Manrico Gemina of Northern Mindanao in a referee-stopped contest (RS), one minute and .07 seconds left in the first round of the paperweight division.

Filinvest eyes second Davao condo project
04/24/2008 | 03:09 AM
MANILA, Philippines - Gotianun-led Filinvest Land, Inc. is investing up to P2 billion in a second condominium project in Davao City, as it expects no letup in demand.
- BusinessWorld

Davao guard returns bag containing jewelry, big cash
04/24/2008 | 03:03 AM
DAVAO CITY, Philippines – In a rare act of honesty, a security guard in the city returned last Friday to its owner a bag containing cash and valuables amounting P100, 000.
Arnie Mepico, a security guard at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City, found Friday an unattended bag containing P 82, 000 cash and jewelry worth P18, 000, GMA network news Testigo reported Wednesday.
According to the report, Mepico immediately turned over the bag he found at the lobby to the hotel’s management, which on that day returned the bag to its owner Celeste Cagas.
Mepico received from the hotel management a commendation as a reward for his honesty.
Even if he did not receive any token of gratitude from Cagas, Mepico was happy about what he did, the report said. -GMANews.TV

Benefits of hydroplant outweigh damage: DOT
By Carlo P. Mallo
EVEN the government agency that has been actively promoting the preservation of the environment seems to believe that indeed the benefits of a hydropower plant far outweigh the short-term repercussions it may have on the environment.
The top official of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Southern Mindanao said that hydropower is considered to be the cleanest sources of energy in the world, and that it is a renewable one.
An environmental group claimed that the construction of the hydropower plant "stands in violation of the Bagobo's rights to their ancestral lands."
The environmental group, Panalipdan! Southern Mindanao, added that "the Sibulan hydropower plant is bound to destroy the ecological biodiversity of Tudaya and will cause negative impact on the whole of Mt. Apo, which is supposed to be protected from such corporate and profit-oriented projects."
In an interview Tuesday with Sun.Star, DOT Southern Mindanao Chief Sonia Garcia said a free and prior consent from the leaders of the tribal group in the Sibulan area was duly complied with by Hedcor before it embarked on the multi-billion hydropower plant project.
Garcia added that the only construction done by Hedcor apart from the actual hydropower plant itself was a road, which is estimated to cost about P200 million.
In an earlier interview, Sta. Cruz Municipal Mayor Joel Ray Lopez said the local government unit (LGU) was not capable of doing such project.
Garcia said part of the agreement was to establish two ecological parks in the area and a cultural village.
Moreover, another top government official, who requested anonymity, said that if ever there are damages done to the environment in the area, "it is will be only temporary."
Also, the government official said part of the conditions set forth by the government is that Hedcor will have to conduct massive reforestation efforts on the areas it has damaged in the course of the construction of the hydropower plant.

Container traffic at Davao port dips
RECORDS from the Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) showed that the domestic container traffic at the Davao Port dipped by 7.8 percent in 2007.
The PPA attributed such decrease to the increase of foreign vessels that are now directly loading cargo from the Port of Davao in Sasa.
"The volume of containerized bananas transshipped to Manila for final foreign destination has been decreasing for the last three years since more ships are now loading cargoes in Sasa Wharf direct to foreign markets. The loss in the domestic front is a gain in the foreign TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units)," a statement issued by PPA said.
Prior to the activation of direct routes of shipping lines in Davao, like Southship, Jardine, RCL, and Marianas apart from the existing APL and Maersk, total domestic transit volume for 2004 to 2006 has been well within the 100,000 metric ton mark.
PPA District Office-Southern Mindanao Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan said the updates keep them on their toes in terms of infrastructure responsiveness as well as keeping their clients satisfied with the quality of their services. (CPM/With PR)

dinabaw April 24th, 2008, 06:29 AM Planning for Kadayawan 2008
* Blogie
* 23 April 2008 – 11:59 pm
This morning I was at a planning session for the promotions activities of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival. Marco Polo’s Art Boncato invited me just this morning to be a part of this committee. It was rather sudden and spur-of-the-moment, but I gladly obliged. I wouldn’t miss the chance of helping organize Davao’s own traditional festival.
I don’t want to jump the gun on the Kadayawan organizers, so I’m not going to divulge anything before the official announcements. But I would like to mention that this year is going to be different. For one thing, the younger generation is starting to take over the reins, and we’re bringing in fresh ideas.
The changing of the guards, so to speak, will surely be evident in the way the festival will be marketed to the rest of the country, and — to a limited extent — to other countries. And hopefully, this freshness will also be apparent during the festival itself in August. Expect the unexpected!
Of course, I know that the planners won’t for a second neglect the origins of the Kadayawan. No matter how we would like to modernize the event, we mustn’t forget that it is a celebration that’s deeply rooted in our past, in our indigenous culture.
The Kadayawan (”beauty” or “goodness”) festival is historically a celebration of everything that is good about Davao. It has also been identified with the traditional symbols of our city: the famous Waling-Waling orchid, the Philippine Eagle, Mt. Apo and our fruits. This year, it is being proposed that we carry all of this under one overarching idea, that of abundance.
I just hope that those who are still the ultimate decision-makers for this event will see the sense in what the young bloods are trying to inject into the planning of this festival.
Ok. I’ll stop there. We’re supposed to have another meeting to discuss the brochures and other collateral materials, but I’m going to be in Manila for the iBlog4 Conference this Saturday. At any rate, I’m going to keep you, my dear readers, updated on the Kadayawan sa Dabaw event details.

Senti mode muna ako: I remember 3 years ago, 2005 - may mga forumers from other areas that mocked our beloved city. wala daw developments, walang progress, and it was no longer Mindanao's premier city daw. I was really affected (char kaau noh? ehehehhe) to the point that I sent a letter to Ms Joji Ilagan Bian (chairman of Mindanao Business Council) and Councilor Peter Laviña (head of the city's department that handles investments) with my concern. A copy of my letter was also printed in Mindanao Times. Ang dami kong reklamo nun....eheheh wala tayong IT Park, maraming proposed projects na d na pursue like Greenbelt (now called People's Park, that time kc it was in a planning stage pa), the defunct multimillion Sta Ana wharf's marina development project, the absence of a decent business park (ayala business park), and the absence of call centers in the city that can provide employment to our beloved Dabawenyos....
Moving forward....3 years have passed..and look where we are now! weeeeee ang sarap umiyak coz of joy! Davao City is literally in bloom again - with a number of new investments and constructions.! And this is because of the synergy among Dabawenyos, the local businessmen, and our local government. The Sta Ana Wharf Marina development may not have been pursued but look at the new on going marina developments that we have:
- Ocean View (Samal) - the first yacht club in the island and the biggest in Visayas and Mindanao
- Kembali Coast (Samal)
- Ocean Cove (mainland Davao)
- Anflocor and Landco's seafront development in Samal (Samal)
3 years ago, some Dabawenyos were so down and baffled when ALI decided to put up their first project in Northern Mindanao with rumors that an Ayala Business Park and Mall would also be constructed there. Sincerely, I was happy for them but I was so sad for our city at that time thinking why the country's number one developer opted not to invest or put up a project in our city as well.
But now our city will have Ayala Land's Business Park - the first ever in Mindanao, Ayala Land's first IT/BPO Building (not one but two) and Ayala Center Davao, the first ever and only Ayala Mall in Mindanao; construction would kick off within the year.
3 years ago, we dont have any callcenters but now we have more than a dozen with some of the world's famous, giant, and notable BPOs:
- Sitel
- Western Watts
- Sutherland
- plus other Dabawenyo owned contact centers such as Callwell.
3 years ago, I thought the Greenbelt park plan was scrapped and shelved but now we have:
- People's Park: probably the best and well planned public/city park that Ive ever been to.
And now, 3 years after....our urban lifestyle is starting to reshape with the entry of a number of condominium projects from big time developers, entry of new professions (BPO and IT industry), entry of new office addresses (Damosa IT Park, NCCC Mall's IT Center, Sutherland's IT Building, etc), and new weekend destinations in mainland Davao and Samal (Bali Bali, Hof Go Rei, Camp Sabros, etc).
weeeeeeeeee....im so happy...and remember what I told u kuya darry when we met in Davao...."in 3 years time!" That was August of 2007...wow, wala pang 1 year but look at the developments that we have.
Plus not to mention the planned Davao City LRT and Davao LRT. (both are highly debatable so let's not touch that topic muna..eheheheh let's leave it to the local government, Mayor Duterte, City Council, Marubeni Corp, the other UK investor, and the residents of Davao)

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/23 April) – Davao City is the lone Mindanawon city to have reached a population of more than one million, according to the 2007 Philippine Census of Population (Popcen 2007).
Within Mindanao’s 27 provinces and 33 cities, however, Davao City’s 1,363,337 population is the highest, data from the Census showed.
Among the provinces, Bukidnon has the highest population at 1,190,284, although that is still lower than Davao City’s. Only three Mindanao provinces have a population of over a million each: Bukidnon, Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato.
Conducted by the National Statistics Office, Popcen 2007 has placed the Philippine population at 88,574,614 persons as of August 1, 2007. The results were made official with the signing by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo of Proclamation No. 1489 last April 16.
Of 88.57 million Filipinos, 23.59 million are in Mindanao.
MindaNews collated the regional reports of the Mindanao portion of the 2007 Census and came up with the following Top 10 cities and Top 10 provinces in Mindanao:

The least populated Mindanao City is El Salvador (41,905) in Misamis Oriental, one of six newly-created cities and one of the subjects of protest by the League of Cities of the Philippines.
Davao City’s barangays Buhangin Poblacion, Talomo Poblacion and Sasa have higher population than El Salvador City, with at least 50,000 each.
The Top 10 Provinces are Bukidnon (1.19 M), Lanao del Sur (1,138,544), North Cotabato (1,121,974), Zamboanga del Sur (914,278), Zamboanga del Norte (907,238), Sulu (849,670), Davao del Norte (847,440), Davao del Sur (822,406), South Cotabato (767,254) and Misamis Oriental (748,885).

Davao Port emerges as foreign container hub
Davao City (23 April) -- Reflecting substantial increase in foreign trade, the Port of Davao leads the pack in Mindanao and places fourth nationwide in terms of container traffic in 2007.
This positive development runs parallel to the increasing containerization trend in handling cargoes in more developed economies worldwide, giving way to greater productivity, faster turnaround time of ships at the ports and better trade movement opportunities.
As per initial records, Davao Port's foreign container traffic, rose by 36.8% in 2007 with a total of 182, 564 TEUs from 2006's 133, 367 TEUs.
Foreign trade performance in the ports refers to the level of import and export cargo volume or throughput measured in Metric Tons (MT) as well as the container traffic which is reflected through Twenty-Foot Equivalent Units (TEUs).
In the initial 2007 operational statistical report issued by the Port Management Office-Davao, combined domestic and foreign trade at the premier government baseport in Davao City, likewise registered positively with a 3.8% increase compared to its 2006 performance in terms of total cargo throughput (TCT), amounting to 3.2 million MTs. 49.6% of which is attributed to foreign cargoes both for import and export which grew by 7.55% during the year.
Domestic container traffic of the Davao Port, on the other hand, dipped by 7.8% in 2007. The implication of this figure deserves a second look at the trend of the operations of the transshipment of containerized cargoes, meaning those which are loaded from domestic ports either through chartered or passenger vessels prior to being consolidated in a larger foreign-bound vessel in other ports such as Manila.
Transshipped containerized cargoes are reflected as domestic TEUs. However, as the volume of containerized bananas transshipped to Manila for final foreign destination has been decreasing for the last three years since more ships are now loading cargoes in Sasa Wharf to direct to foreign markets, the loss in the domestic front is a gain in the foreign TEUs, causing the 36.8% upsurge in the latter.
Prior to the activation of direct routes of shipping lines in Davao like Southship, Jardine, RCL and Marianas apart from the existing APL and Maersk, total domestic transit volume for 2004 to 2006 have been well within the 100, 000 metric ton mark.
"These updates keep us on our toes up in terms of infrastructure responsiveness as well as keeping our clients satisfied with the quality of our services," Philippine Ports Authority Port District Office-Southern Mindanao Manager Abdussabor Sawadjaan reveals during the recently concluded District Conference in Davao City last March 24-26.
Sawadjaan had always been keen on pushing for the installation of a mobile harbor crane based on the clamor of the export sector and as committed by Sasa Wharf's cargo handling operators (CHO), the Davao International Port and Stevedoring Services Corporation (DIPSSCOR) and the Filipinas Port Services (FILPORT) in their respective business cited in their CH service contracts with the PPA.
For an international port like Davao, the reliance on the slower on-deck cranes of vessels or the land-based reach stacker instead of the more flexible and larger mobile cranes greatly affects labor productivity, causing longer turnaround time (TAT) for vessels in the port which increases shipping cost and can often be the cause of demurrage claims of ships being delayed en route to other port of calls.
As compared to more advanced ports in neighboring Asian countries such as Malaysia, Singapore, China and HongKong which are well-equipped in terms of container handling, countryside or regional gateways in SoMin District such as Davao, and General Santos stand disadvantaged for the apparent absence of more efficient cranes to handle fully-containerized vessels.
Sawadjaan cited that the newly constructed modern Mindanao Container Terminal in Tagoloan, Misamis Oriental in Northern Mindanao (NoMin) by the Phividec Industrial Authority with gantry cranes to boot is developing rapidly as more direct routes to and from international destinations run by American President Lines and Maersk are being encouraged with the faster TAT of ships and labor productivity, promoting fresher, faster and forward-looking trade prospects. Feature: Davao least poor region in Mindanao
Davao City (23 April) -- Davao Region ranked the least poor among the six regions in Mindanao, a 2003 data from the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) showed.
The region posted 28.1 percent poverty incidence of families in 2003, a slight increase of 0.4 percent from 27.7 in 2000.
It also posted the lowest poverty incidence in 2003 at 34.4 percent, indicating a slight increase of 1.3 percent from 33.1 percent in 2000.
Davao Region's poverty incidence of families in 2003 was only 3.4 percentage point higher than the national average of 24.7 while its poverty incidence of population for that year was 3 percent higher than the national average of 30.4.
NCSB defines property incidence as the percentage of families whose income fall below the poverty threshold, which is defined as the level of income, needed to meet the minimum requirement for food and non-food. The poverty incidence of families tells the number of poor families while the poverty incidence of population is the number of poor individuals in a certain population.
Meanwhile, NCSB data showed that the 2003 poverty incidence levels of other regions in Mindanao were way above the national level.
Caraga Region with 47.3 percent proportion of poor families; the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) with 45.7 percent; and Western Mindanao with 44.1 percent showed the highest level of poverty problem among the Mindanao regions.
Poverty problem was not as much intense in 2003 in Davao Region, Central Mindanao and Northern Mindanao with 28.1 percent, 32 percent and 37.9 percent level of poverty incidence of families respectively.
In the same year, the annual per capita poverty threshold of Davao Region went up from P10,264 in 2000 to P11,276 in 2003, posting a 9.9 percent increase during the period.
NCSB said this meant that a family living in the region should have an income of at least P4,698.33 a month to sustain their minimum basic needs for its food and non-food requirement.
Davao Region also ranked lowest in 2003 in terms of subsistence incidence at 13.5 percent. But this figure reflected a slight increase of 0.7 percent from 12.8 percent in 2000.
Subsistence incidence of population in the region likewise went up by 0.9 percent from 16.7 percent in 2000 to 17.6 in 2003.
NCSB simply defines the subsistence incidence of families as the number of families that cannot meet the minimum food requirement while the subsistence incidence of population is the number of individuals failing to meet the food requirement.
Meanwhile, Western Mindanao Region (Region XI) with 27.9 percent; Caraga with 24.5 percent; and Northern Mindanao (Region X) with 19.7 percent ranked highest in subsistence incidence of families.
NCSB has come up with poverty mapping of provinces and cities to closely look at poverty problems at the local level basing on the indicators used in the minimum basic needs approach to addressing poverty. (PIA) [top]

Davao Islands eyed for resort development
by RG Alama
Davao City (23 April) -- The Department of Tourism (DOT) has short-listed several small islands scattered along the Davao Region to be presented to investors who are interested in developing an island resort.
According to Sonia Garcia, Regional Director of DOT-XI, they are bringing in European investors who are currently into resort development in Manado, Indonesia to look into the islands in the Region.
"Sa June darating ang mga investors (the investors will come) and they will take a look at the islands," Garcia said.
Among the islands shortlisted include Ligid and Talikud Islands in Davao Gulf and Pujada Island in Pujada Bay along Davao Oriental's East Coast. She said that the islands are becoming key destinations but the development of these islands lies in the provinces.
The PTA (Philippine Tourism Authority) can jumpstart investments or we try to bring in investors which we are doing right now.
According to Garcia, the investors wanted those near dives spots and away from cities as the investors don't want to develop city beach resorts.
Garcia said that they had met with the European investors in Singapore during the Asian Dive Expo held recently, in which the investors were formally invited to visit Davao and see investment potentials particularly the small islands. (PIA) [top]

hi there kuya vic, pang international talaga pala mga ports ng davao, be it sea or air.

Hi Junax,
Davao International Seaport is not called as such for nothing. In fact it lead Mindanao in number of containers shipped out through it inspite of the lack of gantry cranes. Let's see how it fares when this elusive facility gets installed there. It might be more exciting to see our own port making all the strides soon.

nope, the first school to offer computer programming is inside Ateneo De Davao University but later on the group who managed it broke-away and set-up their own company, Digital Interface, Inc. Nelson Quilos and I were classmates on that class from ADDU to Digital Interface and there was another programming school located in Bajada if I remember correctly.
Digital Interface has become what it is now through sheer hard work and dedication of its owners who were just a group of students in ADDU then.

Hmmm...ang daming buildings...and to think we are just looking at the areas in downtown Davao or near to it. D pa kasali ang sa Toril, Calinan, Bangkal, Matina, Lanang, and other areas where there are a number of buildings too...
Hindi rin nasali dito ang Monteverde/Uyanguren (chinatown), Agdao at San Pedro Street where there are lots of midrise buildings (5-7 floors). ^^

Hi Junax,
Davao International Seaport is not called as such for nothing. In fact it lead Mindanao in number of containers shipped out through it inspite of the lack of gantry cranes. Let's see how it fares when this elusive facility gets installed there. It might be more exciting to see our own port making all the strides soon.
There are also numerous large tanker vessels calling on Davao Port because of our coconut and castor oil exports. As well as ocean-going bulk carriers carrying paper rolls for delivery to MinCor, DavCor and Steniel Packing and wheat for delivery to URC Mill Plant and so forth...

dinabaw April 24th, 2008, 10:30 AM Davao least poor region in Mindanao
By glenrose on Apr 24, 2008 in Feature
Davao City (23 April) — Davao Region ranked the least poor among the six regions in Mindanao, a 2003 data from the National Statistical Coordination Board (NSCB) showed.
Davao Region’s poverty incidence of families in 2003 was only 3.4 percentage point higher than the national average of 24.7 while its poverty incidence of population for that year was 3 percent higher than the national average of 30.4.
(PIA)

Investors bullish on condominium
business in Davao City
By JUDY QUIROS
Real estate developers are confident in investing in the condominium business in Davao City due to growing market interest.
On May 9, Filinvest will break ground on its P2-billion One Oasis, a three-hectare condominium project – the first of its kind in Mindanao – in Ecoland Subdivision in Matina, a stone’s throw away from SM City Davao.
In an interview with reporters yesterday, Filinvest Davao branch manager Alan Barquilla said One Oasis is one of the company’s five real estate projects in Davao with a total cost of P6 billion.
Filinvest’s condominium project will be the second condominium situated near SM City Davao. A newly built condominium developed by the DMC Urban Property Developers Inc. of the Consunjis stands in the same area.
The other projects of Filinvest are Kembali Coast in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), Orange Grove along Ma-a diversion road, Fuente de Villa in Tulip Drive, and Le Jardin along Ma-a Road. These are residential subdivision projects.
Filinvest sales team head Anamarie Peters said the company’s market for residential subdivision projects are mostly Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Mindanao and foreigners who married Filipinos who are looking for a retirement place, professionals, and businessmen of Davao City and neighboring provinces.
One Oasis is composed of four medium-rise condominium buildings and three condotel buildings. Each condominium building has five floors of residential units and a roof deck for laundry area, Barquilla said.
He said two of the buildings will be completed in May 2009, while the entire project is expected to be complete in 2012.
Filinvest senior business development manager Geraldine Gorostiza said a condominium is a big investment but due to a growing public interest, Filinvest is confident in investing in the business.
“The company has seen interest from the public on condominiums. Our market for our condominiums are largely locals but out-of-towners,” Gorostiza said.
She said Filinvest is also planning to develop a three-hectare property in Ma-a into another condominium project.
Barquilla said Filinvest is aggressively investing in a number of high-end development projects in the city in light of a responsive market where people are interested in living in the city.
He said Filinvest, which also has an eight-hectare residential subdivision project in Tagum City and a 12-hectare project in Butuan City, is scouting to develop similar projects in General Santos City.

The Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) has collected almost P3 million in sponsorship from the private and public sectors for the staging of the Caracoles Festival which will kick off on April 25.
In a press conference, Samal Tourism Council president Araceli Ayuste said the initial budget was P600,000, to which the Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 11 added P100,000, Globe Telecom P1.4 million, second district Rep. Anton Lagdameo P200,000, and the national office of the DOT P300,000.
The Caracoles Festival is a sunset-to-sunrise celebration of shells and the bounty of marine life. It is the only festival that celebrates Samal’s marine life and growing diving industry.
This year, the festivity will open with beach volleyball at the Samal Freedom Park and an exhibit/exposition of tourist destinations and products of the island at the Peñaplata Central Elementary School.
The beach volleyball will be followed by the regatta or fluvial parade crossing the narrow channel from the mainland to the island. Colorful boats will depart from Sta. Ana wharf at 5 p.m. heading for Peñaplata Wharf.
Other activities are the Baile del Año in which participants will wear costumes depicting the marine resources found in the island and the gulf; the Estrella del Mar (Star of the Sea), a representation of a marine resource not only by costume but through gestures and movements; and Musicaracoles, a live band concert and street party.
Regional tourism director Sonia Garcia said DOT’s International Marketing Team, the officers of the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHIL-TOA), and guests from Japan and China will arrive in the island to celebrate.

aries6210 April 24th, 2008, 10:56 AM Filinvest eyes second Davao condo project, to copy Ortigas condo venture in M.

Peng Hok April 24th, 2008, 12:41 PM Ever Gotesco daw ang motake over. :jk:

Solariega is Davao's first subdivision with CCTV
SOLARIEGA adds another feather to its cap as the first and only subdivision, called Solariega Prime, in Davao City to have the Close Circuit Television (CCTV) integrated in its security system.
Also known as the only professionally managed subdivision in the city, Solariega continues to enjoy its well-deserved reputation as the most-admired Caribbean-themed community as it continually develops programs that further enhance its status and upgrade its value proposition. The Closed Circuit Television system, installed by Prime, Home Channel Network's sister company and division of Emerging Technologies Inc., is now operational and bolsters Solariega's central security system.
It gives homeowners a well-placed sense of security since they are able to view visitors first before allowing them entry.
Prime gives Solariega an edge not only in security, but also with other value added services that are part and parcel of Solariega Prime, such as cable TV, community channel, Goods to Go channel, and soon, direct access to high speed Internet connection.
"Not only is Solariega Davao's first and only professionally managed subdivision, it is now also the first and only subdivision in the city that has an integrated CCTV security system. In fact, Solariega is the first on both accounts in the whole of Mindanao," said Myra Lynn R. Gilig, general manager of Communities Philippines Davao, developer of Solariega and other prime subdivisions in Davao such as Toscana and Positano.
Solariega Prime offers Solariega homeowners over 30 cable programs in its Home Channel Network at the lowest price in town, while the community channel, called Solariega channel, is dedicated to the community's internal announcements and updates, keeping every homeowner abreast of the goings-on in their subdivision.
Another innovative feature is the "Goods To Go Channel" that allows homeowners to shop for grocery items from the comfort and convenience of their homes.
Solariega Prime is designed to suit the preferred lifestyle of Solariega homeowners and is a product of the abiding commitment of Communities Philippines to continually upgrade its products and services in real estate development.
Communities Philippines is one of the country's real estate market leaders, along with Brittany Corporation, Camella Homes, and Crown Asia, all of which are subsidiaries of Vista Land & Lifescapes Inc., the biggest homebuilder in the Philippines.

oradude23 April 24th, 2008, 05:41 PM Im quite confused, if the second condo project in Davao would be a replica of the Ortigas condo venture ng FLI, they are referring to One Oasis Ortigas. It is the only condo venture of FLI in Ortigas area right now.
So it's an ala One Oasis complex in Ortigas nga...But we already have one in Davao....is the author talking about the same project?
Hmmmm...so it would be a second condo complex? Or is there a typo error? could the author be referring to the second condo building only within One Oasis Davao complex? Sold out na ang first building. Could he be referring to the second condo building which is on a preselling stage today?
hmmmmmm then it could be a second project then. And it could be different from ONE OASIS DAVAO.
Yeah, good points you raised there. That's why I was so confused after reading the article, didn't know what to make of it. Anyway, abangan na lang natin. I still think it's the same project near SM.

Robinson's mall to rise in Bajada
By Grace L. Plata
ANOTHER mall will be rising in the Bajada area of Davao City.
According to Councilor Peter Laviña, the building of a Robinson's mall here was announced by Frederick Go, president of Robinsons Land Corporation in his recent visit to the city.
Long rumored after its land banking in Davao, the Gokongwei group will be the third major mall developer to venture here after Henry Sy set up SM City Davao almost a decade ago.
Ayala Land earlier entered into partnership with the Floriendo's for the development of the latter's 10-hectare property in front of the Redemptorist Church.
The Robinson's mall would be located also at Bajada near the Water District.
"JP Laurel Avenue would really become the mall street of the city with Gaisano Mall, Victoria Plaza, Ayala, Robinson's, and Gateway dotting the stretch from the Chinese School to Lanang," Laviña said.
"NCCC Mall, on the other hand, has a monopoly on the other side of the city's MacArthur Highway," he added.
The mall project is preceded by three major Robinson's housing projects here. The first is at Diversion Road Buhangin, the second is in front of Lanang Golf & Country Club, and the third, recently approved by the City Council, is once more along the Diversion Road in Buhangin.
"Property development remains as the top investment priority area in the city under the Investment Incentive Code. It's of no wonder, however, because property projects really make a killing," Laviña said.
Laviña added that incidentally, the Gokongweis have good local partners in Davao in the Ed Bangayan group who are their Cebu Pacific general agent. The group is also part owner of Victoria Plaza and SM Davao Department Store.

Filinvest set to unveil P1.5B posh condo project
FILINVEST Land Inc. (FLI) will proceed with the groundbreaking of its P1.5 billion One Oasis Davao condominium complex next week with Vice President Noli de Castro as the guest of honor.
During a media update held at FLI's Orange Grove Club House in Matina, Davao City on Wednesday, Filinvest branch manager Allan Barquilla said they will push through with the groundbreaking on May 9 two of the seven buildings within the complex, which will also have a condotel with amenities to include guarded access gates, clubhouse, gardens, parks, children playground, and swimming pool.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
The complex is located in a 2.3-hectare property at Ecoland Drive beside SM City Davao. One Oasis is a cluster of medium rise residential building (MRB) commonly called as "Walk Up Condominium."
Each building will have five levels and each floor will have choices of two-bedroom unit, one-bedroom, and studio type units. It will have 120 residential condominium units per building or a total of 850 residential units for the seven buildings.
The One Oasis Davao is an Asian-Tropical-inspired community where it is located near offices, schools, churches, health clinics and commercial establishments accessible to public transport along Quimpo Boulevard.
FLI senior business development manager Geraline C. de Gorostiza, who oversees One Oasis Davao, said they had been very aggressive about such projects because of strong market acceptance where more people want to live in the center.
She said they got queries mostly from out-of-towns like the cities of Kidapawan, Koronadal, and General Santos who send their children to universities here.
"We are bullish about this based on the way we see the market," she said.
But she said real property development needs big investment and even if there is a big market, the project won't proceed if there are no resources. She said they are also looking at other areas to develop and their company is optimistic the venture will be profitable.
In fact, she said the other condominium project will be set up in Ma-a also in Davao City.
She added that they have already acquired a 120-hectare property in Tambler in General Santos City but they are still looking for an area of 10 to 15 hectares within the heart of the city for a mixed-use residential area.
Barquilla meanwhile said they currently have five projects already established in the Davao Region. The other four projects are the eight hectares Filinvest Homes at Visayan Village in Tagum City, Orange Grove in Matina, Le Jardin in Ma-a with 12 hectares, Fuente de Villa Abrille, 10 hectares at Tulip Drive, Matina, and the 50 hectares residential resort Kembali Coast in Kaputian District at the Island Garden City of Samal.
He also said their first project in Butuan City, the Filinvest Homes, will have its groundbreaking on May 16. It is a 12-hectare joint venture project with the Plazas, he sa

Davao Region promoted as key dive destination
Sunstar Davao
GOVERNMENT is extensively promoting Davao Region as one of the country's dive destinations after getting positive responses during the Asian Dive Expo (Adex) in Singapore last week.
Department of Tourism (DOT) 11 Regional Director Sonia V. Garcia, during the Davao Business Forum at SM's MediSpa, said they are developing diving in Davao as a niche market mainly because Davao is part of the Coral Triangle.
The Adex is Asia's leading international dive exposition since 1995 that gathers both buyers and consumers of the dive industry.
With more than 2,000 trade visitors and 8,000 consumers who visit Adex, the investment in Asia Dive Expo allows one to leverage its marketing message on a marketing and publicity plan worth more than $400,000.
It was Davao's first participation and it featured specifically the Island Garden City of Samal where the best dive sites are found.
Garcia named the tourism dive sites as the Isla Reta, Dizon Wall, Big Ligid, Auandanao, Mushroom Rock.
She said these areas went through careful assessment by a team from government and private government organizations to ensure that the resources of the areas are preserved.
But Garcia said they will no longer approve and promote dive sites without the issuance by local government units down to the barangay level of local ordinances detailing their commitment to preservate their natural resources.
These dive sites are part of the marine resources protected areas, she said, and there has to be commitment from the locals that they will participate and help in the maintenance of the environment as well as protect it from pollution and improper usage.
Garcia said the areas offer world class sites comparable not only to the other sites of the country but the world.
To ensure continuing promotion, the DOT has mounted the Dive the Gulf Festival that includes several events: April 22, opening of photo exhibit and competition at SM Event Center (the exhibit will run until April 26); an Earth Day Forum also at SM City Friday; pre-caracoles activities with beach volleyball at Freedom Park and Dive Forum at the Davao Medical School Foundation; and on April 26, the Caracoles Festival at the Island Garden City of Samal with Regatta and Street Mardigras and a Live Band Party until Sunrise of April 27.

Caracoles Samal Festival 2008
By Rogelio P. Antalan
Dateline Igacos
Sunstar Davao
ALL roads will lead to the Island Garden City of Samal this Saturday, April 26.
On this day, we will be celebrating Caracoles Samal Festival. Now on its fourth year, the event is beginning to be institutionalized as one of the most joyous and colorful celebrations in the Island City.
Caracoles, meaning "seashells," was first staged in Babak in 2005.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Region 11 Director Sonia Garcia wanted to come up with an a-la-mardi gras event to cap Dive the Gulf, a week-long diving event (mostly in Davao Gulf) that showcases Davao Gulf as the top diving destination in the country.
So, after brainstorming with some employees of the local government and the Igacos Tourism Council, Caracoles was conceptualized.
The name of the festival is appropriate since we have a lot of seashells in Samal. It symbolizes Samal's treasure trove of marine resources.
It is Igacos's vision to be a world-class tourist destination with more than the usual island sun, sand, and sea. Caracoles Samal brings out the pride of place of the community with its bedrock of social and cultural heritage converging.
The first Caracoles Samal was really phenomenal! With a whopping P1.7 million budget, mostly from sponsors, a capacious stage was built with high-tech lights and sounds system.
Video walls were put up all over the area and selling booths with marine-life motifs lined the roadside. There were a lot of participants to the various contests and scores of people, locales and tourists alike, filled the streets for the sundown to sunrise festivity. It was party all night.
All benefited from the event. Most if not all resorts and lodging inns were fully-booked. Habal-habal drivers said that with just a day's hard work of ferrying passengers from far-flung barangays to the poblacion (the event site) they took home a week's earnings. The bakeries that usually open 24 hours had to close by midnight because they ran out of bread to sell. Barbeque grillers tripled their income. Even the itinerant vendors amassed a fortune. Bars and the roadside booths were filled to the brim.
The next Caracoles Samal festivals were not as grandiose as the first, understandably because of lesser budgets. That's what's difficult when the first one is very successful, there will always be comparison.
This year, true to its original concept as a roving festival, Caracoles Samal 2008 will be staged in Peñaplata, Samal district. Even with a meager budget from the local government, DOT, and the private sector, Igacos Tourism Council chairperson Araceli Ayuste hopes that the celebration will be as successful as the first.
Caracoles Samal 2008 kicks off today, April 25, with open beach volleyball at the Samal Freedom Park and exhibits of tourist destinations and display of Island products at the Peñaplata Central Elementary School grounds.
The main event will be in April 26 with a parade of boats (Regatta) from Sta. Ana to Peñaplata wharf at 5:00 p.m. Upon arrival, countdown begins with yell breaks and street dancing to the festival site. This will be followed with a dance demonstration dubbed as Baile del Año where all group participants (numbering at least 30) will come dressed as marine creatures.
Creative minds will also be expressed through a costume contest (Estrella del Mar) where participants don a costume depicting a sea creature, even executing its appropriate gestures and movements. Added to that, there will also be a fashion show (Gloria Maris) on island wear.
A band concert simultaneous with street party will take center stage during Musicaracoles and this will be until sunrise. True Faith will be the guest band for this event.
All these activities simply show the world how grateful Samaleños are for the Igacos's bountiful, breathtaking, and spectacular resources.

15-storey Mixed use Condominium Project
April 13, 2008 by tjbrewed
The last time that I visited Davao City was last year during the Kadayawan Festival. I noticed this rendering displayed on a Santos Building across Davao Doctors Hospital Tower. The original plan was to convert the old building into another shopping mall. It has almost been one year and to date, the rendering is still in there. No sign of any construction at all.
Redwood Square Davao
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:J7-vdqnoTlZudM:http://www.cynical-c.com/archives/bloggraphics/Biang.jpg
^^Here’s a photo of the rendering taken recently by one of my friends based in Davao City.
I contacted the developer and here’s the update that I got. The old plan has been changed. Now, Red Wood Square would be converted into a 15 storeys mixed use development. It would be consisted of 3 levels with retail and commercial spaces and 12 levels residential condominium units. Hmmm pretty neat for that avenue ei? ;)

If you want credible information, sa developer mismo mo makukuha yun. LGUs tend to sugar-coat everything. Kahit sasabihin lang ni Developer X na "we will study about it", ang sasabihin ni mayor at councilor sa public is "Developer X will build its 100 storey office tower here".

It is a 12-hectare joint venture project with the Plazas, he said.

Davao City fast developingas international city: Laviña
With thousands of foreign residents making Davao City as their second home or place of work, the city is fast developing as an international city.
Councilor Peter Laviña made this observation when he graced the foreign residents group first anniversary celebration even as he lauded the German-Filipino Friendship Association based in the city for its contribution to Davao city’s development.
He said local Germans were keeping faith with their goal “Wer sein gadaetland liebt, der foerdert auch seize zukunft” (Who loves his host country, promote its future too).
He said the friendship association helped in promoting the city as a haven for investments, cultural exchange and international solidarity.
Lavina, who once headed the Sister-City Program of the city, said Davao is growing as an international city with thousands of foreign resi-dents notably Japanese, Koreans, Americans, Europeans, Mainland Chinese, Indonesians, and many more.
He said six consulates or consular representatives are present in the city namely: Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Czech Republic, Spain and Palau. The city, he said, has sister city pacts with Keelung in Taiwan, Manado and Bitung in Indonesia, Tacoma in Washington State, Koror in Palau and Nanning in China.
There are also restaurants in the city offering flavors from many nations like Italian, Swiss, German, Dutch, Korean, Japanese, Thai, Vietnam, Turkish, Indian, in addition to Chinese, Filipino and international cuisine.
Moreover, Lavina said the city is the base of many international aid and donor agencies in the southern part of the country like those of the International Finance Corporation of World Bank, Australian Aid, US Aid, etc.
He bared that there are also plenty of foreign students enrolled in Davao universities and schools.
The German-Filipino Friendship Association is registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission and counts 35 members. Its founding and current president is Franc Weis of the Edelweis Restaurant at Tahimik Ave.
Lavina said there are as many as 200 Germans in the city as well as in the neighboring areas like Panabo, Sta. Cruz and Digos. Most of them are married to Filipinas, some are in business, church ministry and in development work.
The German association offers its members translation services with minimal fees, free escorts to government agencies, and information and potential business, travel and housing requirements, he added. PIA/prixdbanzon

as wreck diving site: DOT
World War II vintage US boats can be found in the deep-sea waters off Talomo, Department of Tourism regional director Sonia V. Garcia in an interview said her office learned that during the war, instead of bringing the US ship home which was more expensive, these ships were scuttled in the deep sea waters off Talomo.
She said they knew these from those who already had gone diving in the area but were not able to document them.
“We are inviting technical divers so they could document what are down under,” she said.
Wreck diving, she said, is an attraction which is another come-on for Davao City.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte was even amazed knowing that wreck diving could be a great source of revenues, she said.
Several international divers already explored Davao’s sea waters and for their air requirement alone they would spend some P5,000.
She said they still would need to spend for their hotel and food.
In Davao City, she said there are only four tour operators engaged in diving industry.
With the positioning of Davao and the Philippines as a dive destination, Garcia said the region could possibly attract investors as the industry would entail huge investments.
She said their recent participation in the Asia Dive Expo in Singapore generated positive responses and they are optimistic that this will be a start for more visitor arrivals especially from international diving enthusiasts. PIA/prixdbanzon

Davao City (25 April) — Real property projects in the Davao Region are attractive to international buyers especially in areas where the Euro currency is strong.
Ana Marie Peters, sales team head of Filinvest Land Incorporated (FLI) based in Davao City said her company got a good number of buyers from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).
She said for their European market, these are those who married Filipinas and have roots from Mindanao.
She said in the first quarter of 2007 they made 70 percent of their sales from OFWs however, when the peso turned stronger in 2008 they only made about 30 percent from OFWs.
But the market remains positive she said plus the fact that more are into home buying.
She said most their local buyers are from out-of-town as evident in one of their projects that set a record for a period of six months where all lots were taken at Fuente de Villa Abrille at Tulip Drive in Davao City located in a 10 hectare area with a Southern California inspired theme.
“Most of the buyers are those who send their children in universities here,” she said.
Peters meanwhile said that their Orange Grove subdivision in Matina has all lots occupied by buyers from the locals and foreign.
With a countryside theme, she said they are completing a mountain tree park that will have gazebo, view deck, biking and hiking trail.
It is a 32-hectare development for average city dweller who want to experience simple country pleasures without compromising the usual city conveniences.
It has a clubhouse with an infinity pool and an outdoor Jacuzzi.
Peters said a good number of homebuyers have purchased a property with the intent of retiring in a small country-themed community since the environs beckon to a more quiet, laid-back lifestyle. (PIA)

so at least tama yung nakuha kung info from victo manager, na they are alive and kicking daw :).
let's just wish victo lots of luck, masaya din ako kasi davao brand yang victo, sana mag survive sila against ayala. one technique for them is to remain that masa appeal, after all hindi lahat ng tao maaafford ang ayala shopping.

so, if its true that VP will close in june, maybe they will just do some re enhancement/renovation inside the mall...as what bro Junax posted in the previous page, that VP will still be there and they will still stand as much as they can...hahay, memories will still remain..:)
junax April 25th, 2008, 06:36 AM ^^ i don't think they will ever close as early as june, i called some establishments in and around victoria complex (ahfat, airline offices, etc) and they receive no tsugi orders from victo, na dapat natanggap na nila kung mag close na this june coz i think may leeway yan sa mga establishments kung sakali man. the nearest possibility is merong new management na mag take over but no closing down even for renovation. IMO. :)

Avila committee junks appeal of sand quarries
By ROGER M. BALANZA
The Davao City Council committee on environment and natural resources is throwing out an appeal by operators of sand and gravel quarries in Davao City rivers declared as environmentally-critical zones by a city ordinance aiming to protect the city watersheds and water source recharge areas in the third district.
But councilor Leonardo Avila III, chair of the committee, said the Davao City Quarry Masters Cooperative and a Kalagan tribe running quarries in Tamugan, Marilog district could bring their case to City Hall, saying the appeal requires amending the ordinance.
Rivers in the city’s Third District have been declared as critical zones under the Davao City Watershed Protection, Conservation and Management Ordinance also known as the Watershed Code.
The landmark code authored by councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling was signed into law by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte last year. The code however could not as yet be implemented for lack of Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR). A technical working group has been formed by Duterte to craft the IRR.
The Kalagan tribe and the quarry operators group, which operates in the Third District, have appealed that the code be amended to allow their operation.
But the City Legal Office has declared the quarry operations as against the Watershed Code while the Business Bureau has refused to renew their permits.
In a committee report, Avila and members of the environment committee with Cabling as co-chairman, said it could not grant the appeal unless the Watershed Code is amended to allow the operation of the quarries.
The committee recommended the operators bring their appeal to City Hall which is now crafting the IRR.
