^^ matagal na yung contact center namin sa global arena. 247 Customer (http://www.247customer.com), however, is a new player here sa Philippines. Target nila yung mga veteran (sa industry ha, dili sa edad :D) or experienced employees from other big centers such as Sykes, PeopleSupport, HSBC, Sitel, Teletech, Etelecare, Covergys, and alike. Kaya lahat ng mga anjan sa pix, nanggaling sa ibat ibang call centers..ehehehe lilke me, from PeopleSupport.

Speaking of Convergys, our CEO's one of the bigwigs who brought Convergys in the Philippines. Then he left Convergys around 2 years ago and is now building 247 Customers presence in our country. weeepeee!

With regard to the number of agents, sa account (australian telco) lang namin...around 700 na kami. Hindi pa kasali yung American account (US dsl provider) namin sa kabilang building.

Inventors see high demand for automation (http://http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080426.htm&no=1)
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (26 April) -- A big demand for automation is seen among producers of processed food and the agricultural sector of the Davao Region.

George Colorado, division chief of Inventions Development Division, Technology Application and Promotion Institute (TAPI) in an interview said that although there are inventions that cater to such needs however the capacity of the machines is too small.

He said the producers do it manually and could only finish by the kilos in a day when the demand is huge in metric tons.

He cited the need for dehydrator for fruits and vegetables where the demand is so big but there are two investors who have the capability their capacity is very minimal. "Too small for the small," he said.

The TAPI he said helps inventors promote and advance their inventions as well as help them link with the market and commercialize their invention.

He said they are there to assist the inventors in terms of conducting further research and fund the prototypes.

He also said that they follow a guideline for evaluation in determining its commercial technology wherein they will investigate whether it could be commercialized and its viability.

Colorado said during the third league of the Inventors Regional Consultation cum Industry Matching held in Davao on Thursday there were issues that surfaced and which are related mostly on food production.

He said some producers pointed out that rules applied by the Bureau of Food and Drug is much higher than those of international standards and these are concerns that they need to look at.

Packaging also is another aspect and such issues are discussed with other concerned government agencies.

The TAPI he said however given such functions to assist the inventors still are constraint to come up with substantial assistance because of the minimal resources given them.

He said their office only gets for 2008 for all their programs of about P8 million while in 2007 they only had P3 million.

"One prototype would cost about P350, 000 and such amount will eat up all of the office appropriated funds," he said.

He said much as they want to promote these inventions they are also faced with some limitation that is why they prioritize programs that would directly address their concerns.

He said the consultation was one event where it finds issues, problems and concerns that would find solutions to problems affecting the inventors. It also came up with steps to strengthen the laws that would support the plight of the inventors.

He said the body drafted resolutions putting more teeth to the Invention and Inventors Incentive Act that would benefits more the inventors. (PIA)

Kiwanis club helps abandoned kids (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&fi=p080426.htm&no=3)
By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (26 April) -- The Kiwanis Club of Davao has been helping abandoned kids particularly disadvantaged children housed at the Love the Children Foundation located upward along Toril district, Davao City

Kiwanis Club of Davao City officials led by Lads Aviola, when they recently visited the Foundation managed by a Pentecostal couple Mr.& Mrs. Cindy Chua adopted about fourteen (14) kids and sponsored their schooling.

Lads Aviola of the Kiwanis Club said most of these children were either abandoned by their parents, or suffered maltreatment. Upon a visitation of the Kiwanis Club, each of the Kiwanis officer adopted a kid and will sponsor their education.

It was learned that the Foundation is being supported by Missionaries from New Zealand. However, hindi makaya ng mag-asawang Chua ang education expenses ng mga bata dahil ang ipinadadala sa kanilang assistance mula sa New Zealand ay kulang at hindi makasya sa pang-araw-araw na pangangailangan ng mga bata, said Aviola in an interview with the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).

It was learned that the Chua couple owned (before) a big hardware but something has pushed them to establish an orphanage to help disadvantage children. The Foundation's building was donated by Caltex Phils, while is now residing in a small residential house that can be seen just along the vicinity of the Foundation Center. The Orphanage needs more or less Php350,000.00 per month to cope up with their daily expenses.

At present, the eldest among the 45 kids is about 17 years old while the youngest is about 4. Twelve (12) of them are schooling in elementary schools.

Kiwanis' plan is to conduct a deworming, medical and dental mission. Scheduled activity will be announced later. We have observed that there is a need for these kids to undergo medical check-up especially deworming, Aviola said.

It's summer and apart from holding a medical mission in this Foundation, Kiwanis club will also conduct free "Operation Tuli" in the area, he said.

Meanwhile, he bared that the Kiwanis Club has been active in the different projects of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte. In fact, Sergio Haw, Boy Rallos and Eleonor H. Madiclum, Assistant Secretary of Kiwanis Club of Davao City, have been representing the Kiwanis Club on the Task Force on Food Fortification created by Mayor Duterte, he further said.

The active Task Force on Food Fortification is being chaired by no less than Mayor Duterte, co-chaired by the Kiwanis Club as designated by the local Chief Executive. (PIA)

CEB sees higher demand for Davao-Singapore service
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

BORACAY -- Cebu Pacific, the country's leading domestic airline, will launch its direct service from Davao to Singapore and Iloilo on May 8 as it pushes through with its commitment to make Davao as its third hub after Manila and Cebu.

The airline will utilize the 150-seater A319 aircraft, which will be based at Davao City International Airport along with its necessary crew and support.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The airline will also launch its Davao-HongKong direct flight the following day.

"Our bookings for our Davao-Singapore direct service is almost full. So far, we have booked at least 124 passengers for that 150-seater aircraft that we will be using," said RG T. Orense, Cebu Air's corporate communications manager, told Sun.Star Davao in an interview here Monday.

Cebu Pacific flew in a group of editors and reporters from Visayas and Mindanao on this world-famous tropical island for a four-day tour on April 19-22.

CEB public relations consultant Charles Lim said the number of passengers who already booked for Davao-Singapore's maiden flight is very promising.

"It's a clear indication of a strong demand for such service," he said.

Orense is optimistic that more air travelers will book for both direct services -- Davao-Singapore and Davao-Iloilo -- before May 8.

"We have three weeks more left. We expect these maiden flights to be fully booked," he said, adding that the "market is really very promising."

With direct service from Davao to Singapore and Hong Kong, Dabawenyos traveling to these neighboring Asian countries do not have to go to Manila or Cebu to get access to air service to reach their destination.

At the same time, tourists and prospective investors can fly directly to Davao City if they wish to visit its tourist attractions or look for investment potentials in the area.

"This is part of our commitment to develop Davao as a gateway into the Philippines and make the country, particularly Davao or Mindanao, a more attractive destination for tourism and trade," said Lance Gokongwei, CEB president and chief executive officer, when he launched Davao as the airline's third hub last year.

He said their direct service from Cebu to Singapore and Hong Kong has been "very successful and there's no reason we can't do it in Davao."

"We recognize Davao as very attractive in terms of promoting trade and tourism. Davao offers the same potentials as Cebu," Gokongwei said.

Orense said the decision to make Davao as the airline's third hub is in preparation for a more expansive inter-island connectivity, as they are expecting for the arrival of more aircraft this year.

He also said the third hub also generates employment for Dabawenyos, claiming that a support crew is needed for the maintenance of the aircraft.

The Davao-Singapore non-stop service will fly three times weekly: Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. Meanwhile, the Davao-Hong Kong direct service will operate four times weekly every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday.

The one-way seat sale fare for the international services is at P999 exclusive of taxes and surcharges. After the seat sale, the lowest year round 'Go' fare Davao-Hong Kong is at P1,499, while Davao-Singapore is at P1,999.

The Davao-Iloilo direct domestic service flies every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday and is introduced with a one-way seat sale fare of only P98. After the seat sale, the lowest year round 'Go' fare from Davao to Iloilo starts from P288.

Orense has encouraged travellers to book online thru the airline's website: www.pacificair.com.

"If you're booked online, you can also re-book online and get your refund online," he said.

Davao retains team championship in boxing

By glenrose on Apr 26, 2008 in News

by Romy Sabaldan

Puerto Princesa City (26 April) — JERWIN ANCAJAS gave the Davao Region Athletic Association (Davraa) the fourth gold in boxing leading to the retention of the overall team championship in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa Thursday afternoon at the Baywalk, this city.

Similar fantastic ring performance gave DAVRAA the momentum at the start of the finals with the Moralde brothers outscoring both their respective opponents in the lower weight categories.

The scorching sun can still be felt in the windswept baywalk of Puerto Princesa when John Vincent Moralde stopped his opponent in the 36-kilogram during first round of the Referee-Stopped-Contest, Outscored (RSC-OS) giving Region XI its first gold in boxing after four days of competition starting April 21, 2008.

Elder brother Engelbert Moralde took the same route for the gold in another RSC-OS decision by the referee. The fight lasted only two rounds.

In the third match of the finals another Davraa boxer Glen Canteveros settled for the silver as the three-man judges awarded the gold to a fighter from host Mimaropa (Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan) Region 4-B. The fight went the distance with both fighters showing more energy in the third and final round.

Mark Anthony Barriga in the 39 kilograms brought back the hunt for the gold of the dominant Davao team via a first round stoppage of his NCR opponent in another RSC-OS decision.

The 5-man DAVRAA champions are part of the Davao del Norte boxing team except for the Moralde brothers who had trained under the ABAP-Davao City Chapter.

ABAP-Davao president Edgar Ramos Ibuyan thanked city sports coordinator Christopher Lawrence Go for his support of the Davraa boxing team.

Team Coach is also from ABAP-Davao Efren Desierto while Roland Oring of DepEd serves as delegation coach and Erlinda Moralde, mother of the Moralde brothers represented ABAP-Davao as secretary.

ABAP national secretary-general Ric Fortaleza awarded the Best Boxer Award to Gerson Nietes Jr. of Negros Occidental Region 6. He is the only boxer in the 16-region competition to break into the column of gold medal winners dominated by the Davao boys. (PIA XI)

Davao Oriental launches mangrove plantation project

By glenrose on Apr 26, 2008 in News

By Neela G. Duallo

City of Mati, Davao Oriental (26 April) — Reckoning the big menace that the ecology is embraced with these days, Vice-Governor Mayo Almario took the initiative of replicating a project bound to protect and revive the lost glory of our environment.

In the Mangrove Plantation launching on April 21, 2008, the project author narrated how the project came to be.

When he saw the Mangrove Highway in Bohol, it dawned on Almario that such could also be done in Davao Oriental.

And so, he directed the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO) to make a project proposal for a Mangrove Plantation in the province.

As stipulated in the project proposal, the project is worth ph300 thousand pesos.

Entailing a hefty sum, Almario then, thought of possible financial sources to the project.

“I already had in mind to ask help from Governor Corazon Malanyaon because certainly, she will support the project,” he said.

But as fate had it, the Vice-Governor met the answer to the problem even before bringing it up to the Chief Executive.

“Dr. Onjie Catbagan of BHP Billeton happened to visit my office, and I also happen to discuss the project with him. Well, because it also is a part of their social responsibility, the company did not hesitate to help,” he added.

The Vice-Governor further explained that the mangrove plantation can also be a source of living for the barangay residents.

“And also, aside from bringing the aquamarine resources back to life, I already envision that the plantation will make a very good tourist spot for the province,” he explained.

He said that the mangrove plantation would elicit ecological concern from the people, since time will come when cleanliness prevails and garbage are disposed properly.

Gov. Corazon Malanyaon commended the project of the Vice-Governor.

“In our efforts for development such as this one, everyone has to take part. And I request DENR to be with me in planning also for Guang-Guang, another mangrove site in the City of Mati,” she said.

City of Mati Mayor Michelle Rabat also expressed gratitude for the project that spells future for the children, particularly from Barangay Badas.

VG Almario divulged that the said Barangay is the pilot area for the project, and should the barangay heed to the challenge of making the project works and make it a success, it will also be implemented in other parts of the City and Province.

The project launching was highlighted with the mangrove planting of the local officials, dept. heads of concerned gov’t agencies, and barangay residents. (DXLM – City of Mati)

Davao church groups intensify campaign vs aerial spraying
04/25/2008 | 06:06 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Church and environmentalist leaders in Davao City on Thursday intensified their campaign to stop the use of aerial spraying in banana plantations in Mindanao.

Indigenous Peoples Apostolate Director Fr. Jun Acedo stressed the need to stop aerial spraying to protect people near banana plantations from getting ill and bodies of water from chemical pollution.

"We cannot afford to see more people suffering or dying because of aerial spraying," said Acedo, in a statement posted late Thursday night on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website (www.cbcpnews.com).

Banana companies use aerial spraying to combat the spread of sigatoka disease or leaf streak. The pest causes significant losses because it ripens bananas prematurely.

An ordinance banning the use of aerial spraying is still pending before the Court of Appeals in Cagayan de Oro City after the banana growers filed an appeal.

On the other hand, Acedo said the diocese of Malaybalay is also supporting a call to stop the use of aerial spraying in Bukidnon province.

Malaybalay diocese expressed support for the Davao City ordinance banning aerial spraying.

Diocesan Ecology Center Coordinator Fr. Jonathan Tianero said the continued use of aerial spraying by banana growers poses a major threat to the lives of the people and the environment.

Ayala to finish construction of Davao complex in four years
DAVAO CITY — Ayala Land Holdings, Inc.’s first major venture in the city, an upscale mixed-use commercial complex, is expected to be completed by 2012.

Javier D. Hernandez, Ayala Malls Group senior division manager, said the company would invest about P3 billion on the project and start construction on a nine-hectare land within the year.

The shopping mall is a joint project with Anflo Management and Investment Corp. (Anflocor) of the Floirendo family, which owns the property.

Mr. Hernandez, who presented the blueprint of the project to Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte at the Marco Polo Hotel last week, said the project would require about 5,000 workers.

Two buildings that will be finished next year will house information and communications technology facilities.

Pinay bags $10,000 in McDo singing tilt

By Jayson Cruz Luna, Reporter

Now she has some big things to show that a small country like hers can produce singing sensations faster than the world can say, “To go.”

Margaret Yu of Davao sang Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing” at the recent “Voice of McDonald’s 2008” in Orlando, Florida, and came out as first-runner up. She got a standing ovation and $10,000.

Yu, 22, was among 3,600 contestants from McDonald’s stores in 118 countries. A worship leader who sings in a church choir in Davao, she said she dedicated her winning song to God.

Natercia Pintor of Portugal won the grand prize.

The judges, evidently, were impressed with what they had heard, said juror and multi-platinum artist Ne-Yo. “I was blown away by the talent. They [contestants] brought the house down. It was really difficult to choose a winner. I applaud McDonald’s for doing this.”

Two of the other judges were Jody Gerson, co-president of Sony/ATV Music Publishing, and Ken Hertz, LLP senior partner.

Two other Filipinos made it to the semifinals—Canada-based Candido Revilles, who eventually placed third, and Yu’s best friend, Paulina Susan Bacarat, also from Davao.

The contest is the biggest singing competition of its kind for 1.6 million McDonald’s employees from around the globe and from more than 30,000 restaurants in over 100 countries.

Yu and Bacarat will be the international fast-food chain’s singing ambassadors. They will help raise funds for McDonald’s Charities, which looks after poor children in the Philippines.

Marami na kasi tayong big and huge malls bro bago pa pumasok ang mga luzon based malls. Dati, nung d pa ako nakakaalis ng Davao City, i grew up thinking that malls should be as huge and sprawling as G-Mall, Victoria Plaza, and JS Citimall. (Those were the malls na kinalakihan ko sa Davao by the way...ehehehhehe pag alis ko d pa nagbubukas ang NCCC Mall)...hindi pala..when I resided in other cities, marami silang malls na if i ll based it sa malls natin sa Davao, parang department stores lang sila..ehehhee

Anyway, IMO there's no need for these luzon based malls such as SM or the upcoming Ayala and Robinsons to build big or regional malls in Davao since we already have a few. Unlike sa Taytay na wala pa tlgang malaking mall dun bago pumasok ang SM. Or even in Pampanga.

Also, ok lang na maliit ang size bro basta angat sa quality. IMO, SM City Davao is one of the non masa SM Citys in the country.

P2-B three-storey condo to rise in Davao City - grabeng budget to for just a lowrise building mukhang gagawa sila ng mall hahaha

DAVAO CITY, April 26 (PNA) – A three-storey condominium project worth P2 billion will be constructed next month in this city.

Filinvest Davao branch manager Alan Barquilla said One Oasis is one of the company's five real estate projects in Davao.

Filinvest will break ground on May 9 a three-hectare condominium project – the first of its kind in Mindanao – in Ecoland, a stone's throw away from SM City Davao.

Real estate developers are confident in investing in the condominium business in this city due to growing market interest.

Filinvest's condominium project will be the second condominium situated near SM City Davao. A newly built condominium developed by the DMC Urban Property Developers Inc. of the Consunjis stands in the same area.

The other projects of Filinvest are Kembali Coast in the Island Garden City of Samal, Orange Grove along Ma-a diversion road, Fuente de Villa in Tulip Drive, and Le Jardin along Ma-a Road. These are residential subdivision projects.

Filinvest sales team head Anamarie Peters said the company's market for residential subdivision projects are mostly Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) from Mindanao and foreigners who married Filipinos who are looking for a retirement place, professionals, and businessmen of Davao City and neighboring provinces.

One Oasis is composed of four medium-rise condominium buildings and three condotel buildings. Each condominium building has five floors of residential units and a roof deck for laundry area, Barquilla said.

He said two of the buildings will be completed in May 2009, while the entire project is expected to be completed in 2012.

Filinvest senior business development manager Geraldine Gorostiza said a condominium is a big investment but due to a growing public interest, Filinvest is confident in investing in the business.

"The company has seen interest from the public on condominiums. Our markets for our condominiums are largely locals and out-of-towners," Gorostiza said.

She said Filinvest is also planning to develop a three-hectare property in Ma-a into another condominium project.

Barquilla said Filinvest is aggressively investing in a number of high-end development projects in the city in light of a responsive market where people are interested in living in the city.

He said Filinvest, which also has an eight-hectare residential subdivision project in Tagum City and a 12-hectare project in Butuan City, is scouting to develop similar projects in General Santos City.

Anyway, there is something wrong with this news. I cant recall any projects (on going or upcoming) by Filinvest in Davao City that is consist of 3 storeys only. This report is misleading. The report started with a statement saying that a 3 storey condo building worth 2 billion will be constructed in Davao next month, yet the following details talked about One Oasis Davao which would start its construction next month. And One Oasis Davao is obviously not the 3-storey condo that the writer is referring to........

I think what the writer meant was a 3 hectare condominium project and not a 3 storey condominium project. :okay:

Davao's Ouano: The triathlete is a champ
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

WHEN Paulo Dino Ouano survived the dreaded Ironman endurance race in Malaysia in February this year, he became the first man from Davao City to pull the trick and achieve every triathlete's goal -- to finish, if not win, a lung-busting triathlon event with such magnitude and up against the world's best.

Having done that, Ouano is not about to stop scaling greater heights, even when the race that took place in Langkawi, Malaysia months ago almost cost him his life.

"My next Ironman is on my list as of the moment," Ouano told Sun.Star as he cited what professionals love to say and that is for triathletes to finish their first Ironman, improve their time the second time around, and to win it the third time.

The 25-year-old Ouano has targeted some other events other than the Ironman like the coming Asian Long Distance Triathlon 2008 and Samal X-Trail Triahtlon in May, and the Olympic distance triathlon race in June this year.

Still, he could not forget his Ironman experience specially during the swimming leg and he shared some details of what happened in Malaysia before getting serious in discussing his next plans as an adventure racer and a triahtlete.

"An elbow of another swimmer hit my googles displacing it and making me stop to fix it. Threading on the warm waters of Langkawi, lactic acid accumulation on my legs started and this made me panic I almost drowned," recalls Ouano. "Rescuers then hovered above me as I resurfaced and tried to pull me out of the race, but I said no, as I wanted to finish the race."

Ouano, summoning all his strength, went on to complete the swimming leg using only his upper body and went on to finish the race. Ouano had a clocking of 13 hours and 14:29 good for 207th place out of more than 700 participants coming from different parts of the world.

"Ironman competition is highly considered the queen of all triathlon races. Every triathlete dreams of participating in the grueling race with the aim of testing their physical and mental stamina to its limit," Ouano said.

To gain the title of Ironman, a triathlete must have a distance of 3.8-kilometer swim, pedal his bike for 180 kilometers, and a punishing 42-kilometer full marathon towards the finish line.

Before venturing into the Ironman, Ouano has had several big achievements as a triathlete, the biggest of which was when he was part of the Davao team that won the Carrera Habagat in Surigao last year.

Joining him in the winning team are Arvie Kane Abejuela, Jiffer Jatico, Leslie Herrero, Keith James Argones and Eric John Luna.

Paulo is the second of four children of Benjamin and Leliosa Ouano. He graduated with a degree of Bachelor of Arts with a major in Political Science at the University of Mindanao in 2005. He worked under Davao City councilors Leonardo Avila III and April Marie Dayap, and once had a job at the Marco Polo Hotel.

Ouano was an adventure racer before becoming a triathlete. "I ventured into triathlon in the year 2004. My first race was in Cagayan de Oro City. As a fist timer, I was able to acknowledge what was lacking in my training and the importance of the correct equipment hence I was using a mountain bike then instead of a road bike," he said.

Ouano eventually became a champion triahtlete and he is willing to help beginners who venture into this kind of sport, a sport that requires an individual to have that physical strength and stamina to excel.

"I am very much willing to coach young athletes in the field of triathlon. I have seen a lot of opportunities for the Filipinos to shine in this field," Ouano said.

But Ouano confessed that being a triahlete has an end just like any other sport. And he is ready and has plans for himself when the time comes for him to abandon the sport that he loves.

"When the time comes for me to get serious, I want to pursue my ambition of becoming a lawyer. Nothing in this world will last forever. Similar to the athlete's career, no one will stay on top of the podium everlastingly," he said.

Paulo Dino Ouano is right, but whatever is in store for him in the future, at least he experienced how it feels to be on top.

Davao archers bag team gold
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

PUERTO PRINCESA CITY, Palawan -- With a total shutout in medal-rich swimming, the archers gave the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) its final gold medal in the 2008 Palarong Pambansa Saturday.

Davraa's secondary boys quartet of Davao del Sur's Ranzel Gealon and Rodolfo Rivas Jr., and Davao City's Roberto Beltran Jr. and Dioscoro Marqueza combined efforts to beat Central Visayas, 185-174, to pocket the team gold medal at the Technical Skills and Development Authority (Tesda) here.

Gealon, 17, a graduate of Matan-ao National High School along with Rivas said in the vernacular, "We had teamwork and our training in Mati twice a day paid off. I'm very happy because this is my last Palaro stint and we won a gold at last."

Gealon, the third child in the brood of five whose father is a farmer, said he wants to take up Criminology in college and become a policeman someday.

But since there are no college scholarships available for archers in the region so far, he said he would have to think things over before deciding what course to take.

Beltran, the youngest in the team at 14 and an incoming junior student at the A.L. Navarro National High School in Lasang, Davao City, said: "Karon pako kadula sa Palaro unya nakadaug pa gyud mi ug gold. Lipay ko kaayo. Gusto pa nako makadula sa sunod Palaro. Maningkamot gyud ko kay akong damgo mamahimong player sa RP team (It's my first time to play here and I'm so happy to have won the gold. I'm excited to compete again next year. I'll train harder because my ultimate dream is making it to the national team)."

Beltran, whose father is a pedicab driver, is the seventh child among nine children.

Marqueza Jr., 16, said he just wanted to finish his studies and get a stable job.

Tyron Dujali, who hails from Davao del Sur, coached the Davao archers.

Ex-KBP prexy is new city tourism officer

POPULAR radio personality and former Kapisanan ng mga Broadkaster sa Pilipinas (KBP) Davao Chapter president Rizal Giovanni "Bong" Aportadera has been appointed as the city's new tourism officer.

This was confirmed Friday by Patricia Melizza Ruivivar, chief of staff of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.

"He [Aportadera] assumed office last Monday. Mayor signed his appointment last week," Ruivivar said in a text message.

Aportadera replaced Gerardinn Marie Angeles-Duran who was reassigned to the People's Park last March barely seven months into her stint as City Tourism Officer.

Duran assumed office during the Kadayawan sa Dabaw season in 2007 -- a year after the resignation of former city tourism officer Id Acaylar.

Duterte personally offered the post to Aportadera during a short meeting at City Hall early April.

Aportadera, who just arrived from abroad then, said he was seriously considering the offer. (GLP)

Hindi kaya't kasali sa 2 billion pesos ang cost ng pagpurchase nung lupa?

Anyway, there is something wrong with this news. I cant recall any projects (on going or upcoming) by Filinvest in Davao City that is consist of 3 storeys only. This report is misleading. The report started with a statement saying that a 3 storey condo building worth 2 billion will be constructed in Davao next month, yet the following details talked about One Oasis Davao which would start its construction next month. And One Oasis Davao is obviously not the 3-storey condo that the writer is referring to........

I think what the writer meant was a 3 hectare condominium project and not a 3 storey condominium project. :okay:

parang typo nga, 3 storey should be 3 hectare siguro. i don't think kasali ang acquition ng lupa kasi usually sa mga press release nila like one oasis, worth ng building na ang naka state. at ang mahal naman ng lupa kung maa area rin lang kahit pa sabihing 1 billion ang lupa, mahal pa rin ang 1 billion na 3 storey building :)

baka mag abracadabra 33 storey yan patay tayo.

yun nga...ehehhehe but 2 billion is big ha...I remember when I was doing this stint as a realtor in Fuente Triangle Realty, the developer of Crown Regency Hotel Tower, Club Ultima, and Ultima Residences in Cebu aka as Fuente Triangle, when our clients asked how much the total investment was, our answer is roughly a billion. And we're talking about three highrise towers here. so a 2 billion for a 3 storey is really big...ehehehehehehhe

My wife though has already experienced water tubing.

Here's what I found about him online:

Dabawenyo with a golden voice
By Jojie Alcantara

RIZAL Giovanni "Bong" Aportadera Jr. is a Dabawenyo with a distinct voice. He started off not unlike Regine Velasquez (Regine's father used to coach her by bringing her to sea where she can at the top of her lungs).

Bong used to sing or practice his baritone through a drinking glass at the young age of 12. Reason? He didn't like his father's (a well-respected doctor) high pitched voice.

Thus started a milestone of a glorious career, which spanned more than a decade of perseverance, sweat and sheer talent.

Bong started his career in broadcast journalism in 1987 as a DJ/TV newscaster/writer with then SBN channel 7, under the tutelage of Mike Balbin Jr. He anchored SBN 7 Primetime News at 10pm, started with the air name Master Blaster at 97.9 DXSS.

With a meager sum of P600 a month of salary, Bong lived off on two hard boiled eggs and half a liter bottle of soda just to save his money while rushing about to write news for TV all until the pre-recorded evening news.

In 1989, he moved to Radio Mindanao Network as a disc jockey under the directorship of Bobby Diamante. He became trainee for DXDC, and did field reporting with Baby Castillo, Dodong Villareal, and some PA work with the late Freddie Vergara.

In 1990, he became a program director at 20 years old with then Amapola Broadcasting's Quiet Storm OZ 99.5 fm, and handled all production and programming work for the station.

In 1991 he became a station manager at 21-years-old for Quest Broadcasting Inc., opened and inaugurated Magic 89.1 DXTM Davao which became Killerbee.

Bong became a professional disc jockey with Magic 89.9 DWTM FM Manila in 1995. He was the first DJ to enter the illustrious roster of Magic, joined the likes of Joe D' Mango, and became the signature voice of the entire Quest and Killerbee Networks.

In 1997 he became the official signature voice of Studio 23 TV, and was one of ABS-CBN's voice talent for their international channel which was formerly known as Sarimanok.

Bong became one of the country's sought after signature voice talents in 1998, and became the official voice for the following: all globe telecoms radio and TV ads, Unilever's Lux shampoo radio and TV ads; SMB's Blue Ice Beer radio and TV ads; Levi's Jeans radio and TV ads; official voice talent for Alfa Romeo Sports car radio and TV ads; Smart Infinity Radio and TV ads; Ford f150 radio and TV ads; Enervon radio and TV ads; Johnson's baby shampoo radio and TV ads; Viva Mineral water radio and TV ads (which won the coveted NY Cresta Award for advertising); Gatorade Radio and TV ads; URC's Nova Chips radio and TV ads; Max Menthol Candy radio and TV ads; Hershey's Chocolates for radio and TV ads; Jollibee radio and TV ads. He won an award in talent casting during the Cebu Ad Congress (gold and silver).

In 2000, Bong came back to Davao City to set up 105.9 MIX FM with partners Randall Ong and Russ Juson. It took three years to plan establishing one of Davao's homegrown radio stations. It was the first to provide audio streaming for fellow Filipinos within the Philippines and around the world to hear MIX FM live from Davao City.

Bong became chairman for KBP Davao for three consecutive terms from 2003 until 2006, which also gave Davao chapter its much deserved best KBP Chapter in the Philippines. In 2005, 105.9 Mix Fm earned its 1st KBP Golden Dove Award as People's Choice for Best FM station in Mindanao.

Currently, he is accomplishing his Radio Journalism degree with the Konrad Adenauer Foundation in Ateneo De Manila; is at present an offshore voice talent for major companies outside the Philippines, and is a radio consultant for a major FM station in Metro Manila.

He also co-owns Basti's Brew, a coffee shop named after his son, with partners Randall and Russ.

Bong had the longest reign as the official host for the Mutya ng Dabaw from 1988-2004. He was also the official master of ceremonies during the opening night of the BIMP Eaga event in Davao City. He is currently active in helping out with the Community Relations Program of the City Mayor's Office, and is a proud member of the Proud Dabawenyo Movement.

His hobby is photography, and has just come back from a long vacation from Norway where his wife is currently residing with their two children.

^^ huuuwaaaat? Mix FM? oh my! sya pala yung fave dj ko sa Red Hot Mix FM. When I was still in Davao, I always wake up with their morning show. Tatlo lang kc stations ko sa Davao dati...ehehehe Killer Bee, MixFM, and UR. But MixFM is on top of my list.

And every morning he always talk about her wifey sa Norway, about Davao, about how he misses his wifey but how he would miss davao as well if aalis sya...eheheheheh

Planning for Kadayawan 2008
23 April 2008 – 11:59 pm

This morning I was at a planning session for the promotions activities of the Kadayawan sa Dabaw festival. Marco Polo’s Art Boncato invited me just this morning to be a part of this committee. It was rather sudden and spur-of-the-moment, but I gladly obliged. I wouldn’t miss the chance of helping organize Davao’s own traditional festival.

I don’t want to jump the gun on the Kadayawan organizers, so I’m not going to divulge anything before the official announcements. But I would like to mention that this year is going to be different. For one thing, the younger generation is starting to take over the reins, and we’re bringing in fresh ideas.

The changing of the guards, so to speak, will surely be evident in the way the festival will be marketed to the rest of the country, and — to a limited extent — to other countries. And hopefully, this freshness will also be apparent during the festival itself in August. Expect the unexpected!

Of course, I know that the planners won’t for a second neglect the origins of the Kadayawan. No matter how we would like to modernize the event, we mustn’t forget that it is a celebration that’s deeply rooted in our past, in our indigenous culture.

The Kadayawan (”beauty” or “goodness”) festival is historically a celebration of everything that is good about Davao. It has also been identified with the traditional symbols of our city: the famous Waling-Waling orchid, the Philippine Eagle, Mt. Apo and our fruits. This year, it is being proposed that we carry all of this under one overarching idea, that of abundance.

I just hope that those who are still the ultimate decision-makers for this event will see the sense in what the young bloods are trying to inject into the planning of this festival.

Ok. I’ll stop there. We’re supposed to have another meeting to discuss the brochures and other collateral materials, but I’m going to be in Manila for the iBlog4 Conference this Saturday. At any rate, I’m going to keep you, my dear readers, updated on the Kadayawan sa Dabaw event details.

i have read an article somewhere, and it stated there that:

Robinsons Manila, Paranaque, Cebu and Davao, are the four Malls of the RLC in which the company is planning to put up a BPO facility in the four mentioned malls...their BPO will have 6,000-10,000 sqm... of BPO area...

so davao's rob area is 17,000 sqm + the BPO so malalaki na rin...siguro pataas ang rob davao hindi sprawling type.

Yung nabasa ko before, it's a total of 17k sqm including the BPO. well for me, ok lang din ang size. It's almost similar to the malls below.

Robinsons Place - Cebu: 18,000 sqm
Robinsons Town Mall - Los Banos -10,000 sqm
Robinsons Place - Cagayan de Oro - 18,000 sqm

i guess hindi pa naman, sa laki ng davao city with 1.3 to 1.5 million people ok pa. kung tapos na ang ayala and robinsons, siguro masasabi natin na tama na muna. although another one in the west could still be accomodated.

the distribution of the malls in davao geographically (in gross floor area), excluding stand alone department stores like nccc, dcla, felcris, etc.:

south:
1. nccc mall - 85k
2. sm - 75k
3. nccc centerpoint - 15k

central:
4. gs mall - 60k
5. lachmi mall - 10k

north:
6. g-mall - 130k
7. victoria plaza -70k
8. ayala center - 75k (or 60k gla)
9. robinsons - 17k

east:
10. chimes - 15k

west:
11. sta. lucia mall - a very old proposal at the RCC (eto na siguro ang last kung sakali man para hindi ma saturate ang market)

:)

Can we ask the same to Cebu Mr. Mod? :)

I think one of the reasons why the Ayalas and the Gokongweis are so confident of putting up their malls in Davao is because their primary market are the thousands of would be call center employees. We all now that within the vicinity of the well-planned Ayala Davao Business Park will be BPO offices/buildings, while Robinsons has alloted a significant amount of space in their upcoming mall.

A great number of these future call center professionals will be coming from the other provinces in Southern, Central and some parts of Northern Mindanao. And many of them might bring along their families to live permanently in Davao hence, being saturated is a far cry situation as far as the Davao Mall market is concerned.

Another landmark on the rise.....Playa Azalea in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao.

Anflocor (owner and developer of Pearl Farm Resort) and Landco (an established developer engaged in high end residential resorts and leisure estates) teamed up to develop a world class coastal tourism estate and beach community in the Island Garden City of Samal. It is envisioned to be the center of leisure, tourism and social activity in Davao Region - offering a mixed use of seaside commercial and residential enclave. An upscale district which will enjoy its own private beach offering breathtaking views of Davao Gulf and Davao City.

It is the first resort in Davao City to have a river pool. This project will be similar to Landco's high end leisure project in Batangas.

Thanks to Rean for the information and updates!

great to be in this forum.

it's been barely a week since i assumed office here at the city tourism operations.

Geri has been reassigned to people's park, where she's doing great in helping out on planning and development.

we all serve at the pleasure of the mayor, and by far, we are happy since a lot of younger people are now getting involved in davao's development.

my task is more on setting up a 5 and 10 year framework for tourism.

true, there are a lot of unique places, but the idea of having a unique selling proposition still seems lacking.

currently, i am holding a lot of meetings with the different sectors, and at the same time, getting all the needed data the office can get, for us to effectively come up with a macro plan for the city's tourism sector.

it's a tough climb, but with really fresh and young minds around...this will greatly benefit davao's development.

great to be in this forum.

it's been barely a week since i assumed office here at the city tourism operations.

Geri has been reassigned to people's park, where she's doing great in helping out on planning and development.

we all serve at the pleasure of the mayor, and by far, we are happy since a lot of younger people are now getting involved in davao's development.

my task is more on setting up a 5 and 10 year framework for tourism.

true, there are a lot of unique places, but the idea of having a unique selling proposition still seems lacking.

currently, i am holding a lot of meetings with the different sectors, and at the same time, getting all the needed data the office can get, for us to effectively come up with a macro plan for the city's tourism sector.

it's a tough climb, but with really fresh and young minds around...this will greatly benefit davao's development.

i'll keep you guys posted:-)

hi dj sonny. congrats for the appointment. its a tough job but we know you can do it.

i used to be part of mixfm forum.

i only ask one thing. i wish davao will have in 5 to 10 years time frame.

ONE ICON that will symbolize davao in all its marketing effort. it could be a huge monument or a tower or cultural center that is unique. na pagnakita natin, one can say "davao". like statue of liberty-new york; eiffel tower - paris, opera house - sydney, space needle - seattle, merlion - singapore, magellan's cross - cebu and so on.

good luck and more power!

hey guys, i'm basically from Davao del sur, working right now in Cebu kaya i'm not that familiar with the restaurants na may function rooms in Davao City preferably sa may Matina or near Matina Area, coz our company is planning to schedule a seminar end of this May'08 and book for 100 persons. Most probably, by 2nd week of May pa ako sa Davao city so it would be a very short time to look for a place. hope you dabawenyo friends out there could help me with your suggestions.

I would surely appreciate that. thanks

I recommend:

1. Buffet Palace along McArthur Highway cor Tulip Drive, Matina, Davao City. They offer, of course, buffet and can accomodate up to 200 I think.

2. World Palace at Ecoland. They have 2 big function halls. Marina Hall can accommodate 150 guests, the other one can accommodate 250 pax.

Sayanga sa choco syrup uy! Pwede man siguro na tilaan no? :bash:

SM diversifies, to build 14 hotels in 5 years

SM Investments Corp. will this year start building two of the 14 low-rise hotels that it wants to build within five years through its hotel arm.

“The company will soon conduct ground breaking for the two hotels,” Merril Yu, senior vice president of SMIC Investment Group, said after the company’s stockholders’ meeting Friday.

He refused to say where the company would build the hotels, apart from saying the 14 would rise up within the SM group’s 30 shopping malls.

One of the two hotels to be built starting this year will have 50 rooms, and the other 150. Their construction cost is estimated at P280 million at P1.4 million per room.

The size of the rooms in the planned 14 low-rise hotels will be 24 square meters, and the developer plans to charge just P2,000 a night to make them affordable to locals.

Earlier, Yu said the company’s low-rise hotels would compete with Days Hotels and other boutique hotels here. Days Hotels operates properties in Tagaytay, Subic Bay, Batangas, Bais, Mactan and Iloilo. It plans to build more hotels in Makati, Baguio City, Boracay, Bohol, Davao, General Santos City, Camiguin and Palawan. (my fave city has not been mentioned here!!!! )

The low-rise hotels apart, SMIC Hotel Investment Group is also building a P2.8-billion five-star hotel in Mactan. It recently signed a contract with European firm Accor to operate a 400-room Sofitel hotel here.

The company is also building the 400-room Radisson Hotel within the Mall of Asia Complex and plans to put up a P450-million hotel in Batangas.

The company is now expanding its Vista Hotel in Tagaytay City to 260 rooms from 128 at a cost of P650 million. That expansion will also add a 1,000-seat ballroom and six meeting rooms to the property. Jenniffer B. Austria

^^ opo kuya...bago yan...last month, there were press releases from LANDCO and Anflocor. However, there were no concrete plans or concept of the project yet. And now, yan na yang concept nila (yung pinost ko sa taas) ehehehhehehe here are some of the related news:

Landco to invest P3.6B in new projects this year (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20080326-126607/Landco-to-invest-P36B-in-new-projects-this-year)
PDI

MANILA, Philippines--Real estate developer Landco Pacific Corp. on Wednesday reported a turnaround in 2007 as the company recognized revenues from several high-end projects that neared completion.

In a briefing, company officials said that the unit of holding firm Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC) reversed a P12.9-million net loss registered in 2006 and ended up with a net income of P261.2 million last year.

The company said it would also invest as much as P3.6 billion in a set of new projects around the country.

Landco's change in fortunes mirrored a similar picture for its parent firm, which snapped a two-year losing streak via strong revenues in 2007.

"We are very pleased with our performance in 2007," said executive vice president and COO Francis V. Ceballos. "This remarkable outcome was the result of our conscious effort to complete development in our core products--leisure communities."

For 2007, the company--which touts itself as a specialist in "leisure development"--announced revenues of P1.92 billion, or 151 percent higher than the P629 million in revenues in 2006.

According to the company, the sharp spike in revenue growth was driven by the substantial completion in development of leisure and resort properties such as Amara en Terrazas, Terrazas de Punta Fuego, Playa Calatagan and Ponderosa Leisure Farms.

These projects accounted for 84 percent of the total revenues derived from real estate sales. Another 11 percent came from hometown communities such as Waterwood Park and Lakewood City.

This year, company officials said that Landco was preparing to develop a new set of projects along the conceptual lines of existing ones.

In the pipeline are Playa Laiya in San Juan, Batangas; Playa Azalea on Samal Island, Davao; Woodridge Garden Village in Zamboanga City; and WoodGrove Park in San Fernando, Pampanga.

Total investments in these projects for the company's 2008 pipeline are expected to hit P3.6 billion, company officials said.

Landco's present portfolio includes the development of high-end leisure, urban and hometown communities, hotels and resorts, malls and central business district complexes.

With the launch and marketing of new projects last year, Landco's operating expenses rose to P884.2 million from last year's P695.8 million, an increase of 27.1 percent.

Net financing income in 2007 increased to P171.4 million from P135 million in 2006.

Landco's core net income contribution to its parent company in 2007 amounted to P139.4 million, representing 50.2 percent of MPIC's total contribution from operations for the year.

World-class property rising in IGaCos soonMindanaotimes Online

LANDCO Pacific, Corp. recently signed a partnership agreement with ANFLOCOR, owner of Davao’s premier destination- Pearl Farm Beach Resort, to develop another best-in-class seaside leisure community development in Samal Island.

The coastal development, envisioned to be the center of leisure, tourism and social activity in the region, will be offering a mixed use of seaside commercial and residential enclave. This upscale district will enjoy its own private beach offering breathtaking views of Davao Gulf and Davao City.

A short 10-minute ferry ride from Davao City will take you to this soon-to-rise exciting destination. It is now a matter of visiting or living in the lap of luxury.

Rizal Giovanni pala si Bong Aportadera , yup an eco-friendly city, more parks & a zoo unta sir bong...welcome to IGACOD (Island Garden City of Davao) :D

City Tourism master plan eyed

Davao City has still to come up with its master plan on tourism where its details how to position the city in the next five years.

City tourism head Rizal Giovanni Aportadera at the Kapehan sa Dabaw on Monday at SM City’s Kafe Rysus said although there is an existing framework they still need to bring it to the different sector.

“We are still deliberating on which aspect of tourism we want to push. But personally I support the councilors program of pushing more for an environmental friendly Davao City. We aim to finish the plan this year,” he said.

Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) chair Simeon Marfori said tourism is their priority this year and in fact they partner with PAHRDF (Philippine-Australian Human Resource Development Facility) for a long term tourism scholarship program.

But he said Davao City should not change because of tourism but on what the city has

He said there has to be a tourist experience and this is the thing that we should offer to our visitors.

“With the completion of a master plan this will really engage everybody in the city,” he said.

Councilor Leo Avila III on the other hand said as far as the Davao Gulf is concerned they aim for “going green” saying they need to come up with standards on how a resort along the Gulf would work on the environmental plan.

He said these areas are sites that tourists frequently visit even as he said with their being conscious on environmental protection they (tourists) would rather spend their money for environment friendly establishments.

Aportadera meanwhile said that although most of the coastal tourism sites like beaches are located in the Island Garden City of Samal he said they are willing partners with the neighboring cities and provinces to ensure that visitors both local and international get the best experience. New Davao tourism officer seeks meeting of minds

By janice on Apr 29, 2008 in Business, Economy

Davao City — Newly appointed Davao City Tourism Officer Rizal Giovanni Aportadera is seeking to meet the different tourism stakeholders in the City to map out a clear tourism framework.

Speaking before the members of the media during the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw held last April 28 at Café Rhysus in SM-Davao mall. Aportadera said that the city needs a clear and unified masterplan. “We need to thresh out where do we go, how do we do it and when will we do it.” Aportadera said.

“We really need to position Davao City as to which aspect of tourism where we want to push.” Aportadera said. The City Tourism Officer said that other cities have pushed unique selling destinations like Bangkok in particular which has pushed for clean air tourism.

“In my own opinion I want to push Davao as an environment-friendly city, since it still is one of the cleanest and greenest cities in the country.” Aportadera said. However he prefers that the matter needed more discussions. The former Davao KBP (Kapisanan ng Broadkasters ng Pilipinas) Presxy said that the city’s tourism office is already capable and just needs a proper framework.

Aportadera who assumed office last April 21 took over Ms. Gerardinn Marie Angeles-Duran who was reassigned to the People’s Park, one of the City’s flagship tourism projects.

Meanwhile Simeon Marfori, President of the Davao city Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCCII) said that tourism is one of the three core thrusts of the Chamber apart from agriculture and Information and Communications Technology or ICT.

Like Aportadera, Marfori batted for a unified tourism sector in the city which could come up with a unified vision that will lead to a common master plan. (PIA) by RG Alama

2. no more tricycles witin the city

3. Trees .trees and more trees , Bangkok not only have trees but trees that are pesticides ( no langaw & mosquito)

4. CLEAN palengkes ( no langaw please)

5. disable-friendly sidewalks ( tourists comes in many forms & sizes).

Davao chamber allows easier SME access to borrowings
04/29/2008 | 02:47 AM

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - The Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry has signed a deal with state-run Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) that will give small businesses easy access to loans.

These enterprises may obtain financing without collateral, but their cases will be examined individually, chamber President Simeon P. Marfori II said.

DBP and the chamber are working on the guidelines, which might also allow small companies to guarantee their borrowings using assets other than land.

"We want to be able to help as many small businesses as possible," Mr. Marfori said.

The chamber of commerce will form a team that will study the loan proposals before these are endorsed to the bank.

But the loan applications of small businesses, which make up 99% of the city’s companies, still have to meet banking requirements, the chamber said.

"We will not bypass... proper banking procedures and obligations," said Edgar N. Seronay, DBP’s head in the region.

Davao City’s business sector has been complaining for years about strict lending rules of financial institutions, including government banks. Businessmen claim the lending requirements are too strict despite a so-called unified lending program adopted by the Trade department. - Businessworld

It is the first resort in Davao City to have a river pool. This project will be similar to Landco's high end leisure project in Batangas.

Thanks to Rean for the information and updates!

That's why it's kinda small...ehehehehhehe Just spoke with our sales director here in Robinsons Land HRBD - Highrise Building Division in our Manila office. :okay:

hahaha. i am so amazed on how active this forum is. considering also, plenty of good inputs.

as for the planning of the thrust of tourism in davao...yes...deliberations are still going on, data is still gathered.

ako kasi, quite meticulous with planning. i don't jump the gun like other politikos and capitalize on what's new.

i do believe in inputs, data, and a lot of foresight.

yes.....kaya natin to mga kapatid.

all your inputs are very good, as a matter of fact, some of them are also the same with mine.

but we can still pull this one off, how?

really good planning. not only for the year. but for 5-10 years as well.

festivals are part of the experience, but should not be the exclamation point of a city's tourism potential.

sus ginoo, daghan kaayong maayo nga ideas...the question is....where does it fall, and how do we effectively execute it.

By the way, can our city government improve our two websites? www.davaocity.gov.ph and www.davaotourism.com. Make it more informative, dynamic and inviting? The internet is the most affordable and one of the most effective ways to market our city in the global arena. So while waiting for the plans, can we just improve our city's presence in the world wide web? I know we cant compete when it comes to advertisements and cant be present in every travel exhibits. And having impressive, updated, and informative websites about the city would really help! :okay:

davao's hometown hero!

for short term plan, i propose that all upcoming events in kadayawan 2008 will focus on its mandate. do we need to have basketball tournaments and the like? i hope all accredited activities will be more on music, dances, arts, culinary. i salute mixfm for being part of developing davao's ethnic music. gusto ko yong nanalo sa pacontest nyo. if we listen closely, ethnic music can be fused with trance and other urban beat. we dabawenyos must appreciate who we are, what we have and where we came from.

for medium term, development of cultural villages, upgrading of existing tourism-related facilities like phil eagle, cultural exchanges within asean, propose more profitable & realistic air linkages, participation in travel exhibits, advertisement in tri-media, etc.

for long term, the ICON that will symbolize our beloved city.

Caltex launches new TV ad with
Kitchie Nadal as new endorser

Rock chick Kitchie Nadal has spread out her niche from a performer to endorser. Nowadays, she will be regularly seen on television as the newest endorser of Caltex with Techron TVC.

Doing endorsements were not new to Kitchie. Prior to Caltex, she already made an advertisement for a body spray. According to her, she would only do the job if the products were right.

In a press statement, Caltex brand manager Enrico de Leon said Kitchie was chosen for the commercial because she reflects the positive qua-lities of the product.

With Caltex, Kitchie will not only boost her image as endorser, she would be able also to promote her latest album Love Letters in which some of the songs will be played in all Caltex stations nationwide.

“It is a romantic album that talks about different relationship,” she said in an interview during the Caltex promotional tour held at The Venue last April 25.

Love Letters, composed of 15 nostalgic songs, elicit the romantic side of Kitchie-something that people don’t know about her, more than ever her lovelife. Among the tracks in the said album, she has written 12 of the songs.

During the launching, Kitchie performed her hit singles, revivals, and some songs in the latest album like “Wide Awake,” “Love Thy Will Be Done,” “Kiss Me Goodbye,” “Love Letter,” “Same Ground,” “Huwag na Huwag Mong Sasabihin,” “Highway,” “Ligaya,” “Iniibig Kita,” and “Bulong”.

Popular as composer and performer, Kitchie made name after the release of her first hit single “Huwag na Huwag Mong Sasabihin” that sold over 80,000 copies. Followed by the release of another hit single “Same Ground”. Maya M. Padillo

Ultimate Frisbee
Summer Clinic set

An Ultimate Frisbee Summer Clinic presented by the Junior Chamber International Durian City Inc. (JCI Durian City) Jaycees in cooperation with the Team “Bad Goys” Ultimate Frisbee team is set on May 3 and 4, May 10 and 11 and May 17 at the University of Southeastern Philippines (USEP) grounds in Barrio Obrero, here in the city.

According to Philip “Ipe” Sevilla of team Bad Goys and Erich Alba of the JCI Durian City Jaycees yesterday during the weekly SCOOP Forum at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, this clinic is open to male and female individuals 17 years old and above who are interested to learn the sport and who are looking for a new and effective way to stay fit and healthy this summer.

“The registration fee for this five-day clinic which will culminate with a HAT tourney on May 18 is only P250 and this is also backed by Coke Zero. This event speaks a lot about the people behind JCI Durian City. We are young and on the go just like those who engage in the sport of Ultimate Frisbee. We are concerned about physical wellness and nurturing camaraderie through sports. This is something that we want to share to other people,” he stressed.

For those who are unfamiliar with Ultimate Frisbee, this is a non-contact team sport which is somewhat similar to football or soccer. There are two teams composed of seven players (both male and female) and the object of the game is to get the disc past your opponent’s goal line.

This sport which is also known as “Ultimate” is gaining a lot of momentum here in the local scene because it is ideal for cardio strengthening with all the running involved and weight loss. It also promotes teamwork and is the new workout of choice of young individuals all over the country.

Alba said that this is part of the JCI Durian’s thrust of also helping promote sports and extending something worthy back to the community especially the youth.

On the first weekend of the clinic, there will be a special session for the children of the Bantay Bata 163 Foundation Davao who will also be there to participate and learn about this budding sport.

“Playing an active sport like Ultimate Frisbee is very helpful for children who are going through a difficult time. It can become an outlet for them to express their emotions and dispel negative feelings – a truly cathartic experience,” teacher and JCI Durian member Pearl Mancao said.

Davao Adventure racers rule 1st Mt.
Apo Boulders Adventure Challenge

Adventure athletes from Davao and Cebu comprising the Davao Wild Water-Edge Outdoor team won the first ever Mt. Apo Boulders Adventure Challenge held last weekend in Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur which was participated in by 11 other teams, including those coming from Iligan, Digos and Sta. Cruz.

The team of Davao City’ s Lito Esparar, Yek-Yek Adlawan and Noel Graciano of the Edge Outdoor Shop and Merlita Arias of Cebu finished the 24 hour course way ahead of the other teams and pocketed the P50,000 cash prize.

The team started off with a mountain bike ride from Sta. Cruz to sitio Cabarisan and they ran across the very rough ter-rain towards the boulders near the summit of Mt. Apo, passing by the Ayala Tubing site as they made their way back to Sta. Cruz.

The competing teams of this event, which was presented and organized by the provincial government of Sta. Cruz, Davao Del Sur had to traverse the huge and treacherous boulders at night which made the race more chal-lenging. Plus, there was the chilly weather which was quite difficult for some of the participants to endure.

“Wala namang unto-ward incidents na nang-yari. All the teams got back safely and we’re happy that our boys from Davao won,” Rey Suma-gaysay of the Edge Out-door Shop said.

The second spot went to the team of veteran adventure racer Christopher “Tophe” Eyao and Chai Araneta while the third placer was the team of runner Stella Mamac Diaz. Paul Palo

Federalism means moving forward!Wednesday, April 30, 2008
My readers know very well that I’ve batted for a shift to a federal form of governance (a stand opposed by other media personalities) for the last 20 years simply because since we were granted independence by the United States of America, the Philippines has gone from second only to Japan after the end of World War II to the last on the list. The Philippines proudly was first in Asia on many counts, i.e. Asia’s first democracy, the first to fight a foreign colonizer, Asia’s first airline, etc. etc. We can even consider our National Hero, Dr. Jose Rizal, as a first Asian hero. Yet 62 years later, the Philippines has been overtaken by countries that we often used to look down as underdeveloped. Now we’re the ones who are underdeveloped!

We’re proud of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as the institute that taught our Asian neighbors how to plant rice yet we ended up importing rice from these countries. We had so many things going for the Philippines, except that our political system was too centralized for our own good. In September 1972 President Ferdinand E. Marcos threw out the 1935 Constitution, the best Constitution that we ever had.

So when the Filipino people got fed up with the Marcos dictatorship and supported Tita Cory to remove him through the EDSA Revolt, she ended up creating her own Constitution instead of returning to the 1935 Constitution. If only she listened to then Vice President Salvador “Doy” Laurel, perhaps things might be different in this country today.

I have always been often at odds with Sen. Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr., except that we have a common ground with regards to the respect for all spoken languages in this country and that we can preserve the various cultures that can be found in the Philippine archipelago through a federal system of government. We used to look down at Singapore and Malaysia, but look at them today. Malaysia is a federated state, while Singapore is too small to be federal. So why not the Philippines?

Of course I will not argue with those who believe that the Filipino people should also change for the better. But at least this new proposal for a shift to a federal form of governance signed by 11 senators is a sign of change. While I may not agree with the method they are proposing, which is a constituent assembly (con-ass) instead of a constitutional convention (con-con) for which former Speaker Jose de Venecia was pilloried in the press, the fact that this issue will finally be debated in the Senate is a good sign that even our senators (yes, the Senate could vanish if we shifted to a parliamentary system) are ready to see changes in our political system.

Those who are opposed to a federal system are running out of reasons for keeping our present unitary form of governance. Sen. Pimentel was right when he said, “Under the unitary system that has characterized the government for centuries we only had one center of power, finance and development – Metro Manila.” He is right you know and it is for this reason why we, who live outside of Metro Manila (this also includes Ilocanos), always ridicule Imperial Manila. Federalism will give political, financial and developmental power to the rest of the country and this is the step in the right direction. Keeping our old and unlamented unitary system means not moving forward to a better life.
