Arnel Gabutero set off alone from the village of New Argao in Malita, Davao Del Sur on April 29 aboard his kayak and successfully ended his journey, which was sponsored by the local government, in Punta Dumalag in Davao City on May 1. Gabutero said solo-kayaking was not new to him because as a child, he used to row bancas on the coast of Malita. But he said it was the first time he embarked on such a long journey. Gabutero said he accepted the challenge to mount a solo kayak expedition across the Davao Gulf in support of the campaign of the local government of Malita to protect and rehabilitate its coastal and marine resources. The Malita coastline is a known sanctuary of sea cows, locally known as dugong, and sea turtles or pawikan. Both species are declared endangered and are protected under the country's conservation laws. Malita Mayor Benjamin Bautista said Gabutero's quest was sponsored by the local government to dramatize the importance of protecting marine life. Bautista said Gabutero's expedition would serve as an instrument to perk up public interest in environmental advocacy and sustainability in preserving the beauty of the Davao Gulf. The gulf is also the main fishing ground for many Southern Mindanao fishermen. Bautista said that aside from sponsoring awareness campaigns such as Gabutero's expedition, the local government has also tapped the expertise of conservationists and researchers from the Southern Philippines Marine and Aquatic School to help in the Davao Gulf conservation efforts. http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/regions/view/20080503-134375/Broadcaster-kayaks-to-save-sea-cows-turtles hey! thats where my gran lives, as in likud sa blay dagat na jud. yep daghan jud dugong "aka duyong" didto. daghan pud mga japanese students, nka 2pis usahay 1pis. usahay nopis. :booze: dinabaw May 4th, 2008, 07:03 AM hey! thats where my gran lives, as in likud sa blay dagat na jud. yep daghan jud dugong "aka duyong" didto. daghan pud mga japanese students, nka 2pis usahay 1pis. usahay nopis. :booze:  abi nako ipis , oi suroy ta diha nickle tan.aw ta dugong buhi:lol: shak ngano di man mag post si nikki diri? shaKEIRa May 4th, 2008, 07:15 AM hey! thats where my gran lives, as in likud sa blay dagat na jud. yep daghan jud dugong "aka duyong" didto. daghan pud mga japanese students, nka 2pis usahay 1pis. usahay nopis. :booze: yup... ingon ni andre and jaja nga naa daw tower didto nga pwede daw mo saka then there visible na mga dugong... shaKEIRa May 4th, 2008, 07:20 AM  abi nako ipis , oi suroy ta diha nickle tan.aw ta dugong buhi:lol: shak ngano di man mag post si nikki diri? naa siya sa tuganay then murag wala computer sa iya gi stayhan nga house... don't worry, ill posts some updates... unsa naman inyo plano? she said nga anytime daw except sundays... dinabaw May 4th, 2008, 07:29 AM Sunday, May 04, 2008 Pinoy Sports Idol: Katherine Kim Mayono By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan THIS daughter of a driver was among the finalists of Studio 23's 2007 Pinoy Sports Idol, a reality search for outstanding Filipino athletes. Katherine Kim Mayono, indeed, lived up to her being a sports idol after salvaging the one and only medal for the entire 16-member badminton team of the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) as the curtains of the 2008 Palarong Pambansa closed in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan recently. She annexed the silver medal in the secondary girls single event. Born to parents Ernesto and Evelyn Mayono on April 4, 1992, Kim just graduated at the Talomo National High School. She marched at the SM City Davao entertainment plaza along with her 2008 TNHS batchmates at the height of Davraa's training preparations in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental. She took a three-hour land trip from Mati just to catch up with her graduation rites. Thus, showing that Kim puts weight on her academics, as she is passionate about badminton. She completed her elementary education at the Talomo Elementary School, a few-minute jeepney ride from their home in San Agustin, Ulas. Kim has three siblings: Earnest, Madeleine and Ernesto Jr. They and their parents are the wind beneath her wings. A pillar of strength for Kim and a refuge in the storm. "My family inspires me to be the way that I am now," she told Sun.Star Davao. Standing five-feet-one at 53 kilograms, Kim won in the Araw ng Dabaw Mayor's Cup Badminton Tournament in March, giving her alma mater another taste of glory before graduating. "I'll take up Bachelor of Science in Accountancy at the University of Mindanao (UM) when classes start this June," Kim said. But she maintained she doesn't have to give up her badminton career. "My sport doesn't affect my schooling. It helps me avail of a scholarship and also sustains me financially." Some competitions she joined in gave away cash prizes to winners. Getting started Kim engaged into badminton at age 10. "I was in Grade 5 then. My adviser encouraged me to try the sport so I gave in and I got very interested," she recalled. Talomo coach Jethra Villanueva said: "I was her Science teacher that time when I noticed that she (Kim) was a hyper student, so I convinced her to try out. She got lucky to be picked as part of our elementary badminton team." She represented Talomo in the Unit Meet and earned a ticket to the Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet en route to claiming a slot in the Davraa Meet in 2003. She then emerged champion to qualify for her first-ever Palarong Pambansa on the same year. "Her doubles team won a gold medal in elementary girls during the 2003 Palaro in Tubod, Lanao del Norte," Jethra said. "She is one athlete any coach would love to train. She is obedient, disciplined and determined. She has it within her the hunger to win that I only need a little prodding as to what to do and not to do before and during a tournament," he said. "I noticed in her the making of a successful athlete the very first time I saw her in the tryout. She has this sheer dedication and will-to-win look. I'm very proud that she has remained humble. I believe she will go a long, long way because of her positive attitude in sports. After all, its not all stamina that matters but the attitude," he added. Making waves Kim began making a name for herself since the Palaro debut. She captured the girls 12-under singles title and doubles runner-up honors in the 2nd City of Tacurong National Age-Group Badminton Championships held on April 29 to May 4, 2004. In the 2005 Palaro in La Paz, Iloilo City, she and her partner won the secondary girls doubles silver, then she steered her team to the championship trophy during the JVC Badminton Tournament at the SM City Davao on May 14 and 15 that year. On July 26 and 17, 2005 her tandem topped the Adidas Badminton Challenge Davao leg at the 4Play Badminton Gym then a month later she won anew in the Eagles Cup Badminton Tournament class A doubles at the Smashville Fitness Center along Uyang-uren Street. She and her teammate ruled the Kimoni Badminton Tour 2006 Davao leg junior mixed doubles category at 4Play on March 18-19 and then followed it up with three titles (girls 15-under singles and doubles and girls open doubles) in the 4th City of Tacurong National Age-Group Badminton Championships. In the May 7-14, 2006 Palarong Pambansa held in Naga City, however, Kim's doubles settled for the runner-up honors but she bounced back with the girls singles 14-under crown in the 1st Gov. Petilla National Badminton Tournament in Tacloban City in June. At the Yonex-Sunrise Philippine National Open in Metro Manila held on October 23-30, 2006, she placed second in girls singles 14-under. The year 2007 was similarly fruitful for Kim. She was champion in 16-under mixed doubles and runner-up in 20-under mixed doubles during the Kimoni Badminton Tour Kidapawan leg in February, girls doubles and mixed doubles gold medallist in the Palarong Pambansa hosted by Koronadal City, South Cota-bato. She was also girls singles champion in the PSC 16-under Badminton Tournament held on June 30 at the Smash & Drop and champion again in girls 15-under singles and doubles of the Yonex-Sunrise Regional Championships on September 8 and 9 in General Santos City. As Kim enters college as a varsity scholar at UM, she said she would pursue her dream of becoming a national team player. "I want to be a professional RP badminton team member a few years from now," revealed the avid fan of Filipina actress Judy Ann Santos. With her motto, "Try and try until you succeed," Kim is no doubt guided by a principle that would bring her to greater heights in the future. http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/05/04/sports/pinoy.sports.idol.katherine.kim.mayono.html shaKEIRa May 4th, 2008, 07:48 AM unsa naman? dinabaw May 4th, 2008, 08:21 AM ^^ mag set mug date shak para ma ingnan nako sila http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/3223/246058011148cf21c458zy9.jpg (http://imageshack.us) davaob4now May 4th, 2008, 09:03 AM napabayaan naman ni nga thread oooiii... unta may title na gyud ang davao: "the city of royalties", "the royal city", or "the crown city of the south"...:lol::lol: davaob4now May 4th, 2008, 09:07 AM gilangaw na ang thread nato...post some updates naman sa one oasis...eco400, redwood???and etc...buhayin natin to.. davaob4now May 4th, 2008, 09:08 AM otro pud ni nga thread gilamok:lol:...post some updates of the central park naman...come on... tj_brewed May 4th, 2008, 09:12 AM ^^ ehehehhehe na bz kc mga davao based goys natin eh ;) tj_brewed May 4th, 2008, 09:14 AM ^^ ehehehhe na bz yung mga Davao based goys natin...eheheheheh but im pretty sure maraming pagbabago now sa ECO 4000. The company is seeking to develop the property in four years to make the hotel operational by 2012, as it tries to get a chunk of the booming property market. Francis V. Ceballos, Landco executive vice-president, said the company would divide the property into 800 lots and set up a 200-room hotel that will be the anchor of its Plaza Azalea project. But what could hinder the development of the project, which will begin as early as 2009, is the lack of infrastructure facilities in the island city, Mr. Ceballos said. "Our main concern now is the lack of infrastructure. So we will have to coordinate with the utilities," he said, adding that if worse comes to worst, the company is ready to convert seawater into drinking water. Don Antonio O. Floirendo, Sr., patriarch of the Floirendo family and founder of the Antonio O. Floirendo Corp., welcomed its joint venture with Landco. Mr. Floirendo said he hopes the partnership would lead to more projects since the property arm of his company, Damosa Land Inc., is continuing its diversification. Early last year, the Floirendo property company also signed a joint partnership agreement with Ayala Land, Inc. for the development of its 10-hectare property in downtown Davao City into a mall complex. Under Landco’s Samal project, the property will be divided into the hillside cluster, where each unit is about 250 to 300 square meters, and the beachside cluster, where each unit will be more than 300 square meters. The cheapest unit will be sold for P1.2 million to P1.3 million. The company is also setting up a convention hall that can accommodate a thousand people, the first on the island known for its beautiful beaches. Mr. Ceballos said the company is partnering with the Floirendos after finding out that there are not so many facilities for tourists. The hotel will be packaged as a three-star establishment. Mr. Ceballos said the project would focus on the locals, some of them Filipinos working abroad looking for comfortable homes. — CQF Back to top davaoeagle May 4th, 2008, 07:48 PM Monday, May 05, 2008 Landco Corp. develops P1.5B housing project Sunstar Davao REAL estate developer Landco Pacific Corporation will take on Southern Mindanao in a rather bullish manner with two grandiose projects in the region this year. Mallo THE construction of a bridge connecting the Island Garden City of Samal with Davao City is a welcome development, especially for real estate developers in the island city. According to Francis Ceballos, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Landco Pacific Corporation, the proposed construction of a bridge will be a most welcome development. Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo "It will provide the convenience of travel from Davao City," Ceballos said. Ceballos said the Island Garden City of Samal and Davao City are two entities that are closely related and they must be connected with a bridge to further speed up development in the two areas. Landco, one of the country's premier real estate developers, is developing the 31-hectare property of the Anflocor Group of Companies in the island city into an upscale residential-resort-hotel complex dubbed as the Playa Azalea. One of the primary concerns of Landco at the moment is the lack of a stable source of power in the island city. Ceballos said the electric cooperative in the island could not yet fully supply the energy demands that they will need during a full-blown development in the area. Landco, which is synonymous with leisure, recently launched Playa Azalea to be developed in the 31 hectares property owned by the Floirendos in the said island. Playa Azalea, which is a Spanish word for delicate and refreshing, will be a hotel and a resort in one property. It will house 800 units for sale in which a budget of P500 million is allotted for the residential development. The development has four clusters: three for hilltop clusters and a beachside cluster for residential areas. Eight hundred residential units with lot areas from 350 to 500 square meters will be developed also wherein prices will be P1.2 million per unit. “This is an innovative development in Davao that gives attention to beauty. One of the biggest and strongest assets is the 400- meter stretch beachfront,” said Francis Ceballos, executive vice president and chief operating officer of Landco. Ceballos said that they will start selling very soon and that their target market for residential is the local residents. Units will be turn over within the next four to five years. The proposed hotel will provide services that a three star hotel offers. It will serves basic needs of travelers and conventioneers. “This is the right time for Davao to have this type of high-end development,” said Gerard Marcelo, AVP/SBU head. Maya M. In Mindanao, both sisters are also the only accredited teachers of the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD). Only 17 teachers across the country are accredited by RAD. RAD, a leading International dance examination board specialising in Classical Ballet, was established in London, England back in 1920. Irma and Gina have been teaching ballet at the HGS for the past three years. They chose Holiday Gym and Spa because it is convenient for their clients. “They have nice facilities, top of the line, “ Gina says in a recent interview. “While the parents go to the gym, their kids can easily attend ballet classes.” “There is something for everybody here,” Irma adds. “We feel at home and we are privileged to be part of the group. The management has been very supportive to us.” Irma started teaching ballet since 1974. She is a founding member of the Cultural Center of the Philippines and a well-known choreographer. Her life with ballet started at the age of ten, when she attended her first ballet lesson. “I am happiest when in I am in a ballet class. Ballet has become a way of life for me,” she says. Gina, younger by 15 years and prompted by Irma’s pictures on magazines, billboards and posters, followed her sister’s footsteps and started learning Ballet at the age of five. “She was my first ballet teacher and then I became her assistant. When I migrated to Davao City back in the early 90s, I invited her to join me here,” Gina said. “Gina had talent and she was good. I did not play favorites as her teacher and treated her like the rest of my students,” Irma said. Irma has graduated several students who are now ballet professionals in their own right. She was a recipient of a CCP scholarship on Choreographer’s Workshop and taught ballet at the UP Conservatory of Music and other top colleges in Metro Manila. She passed her Royal Academy of Dance (London) teachers certificate with a grade of distinction. Gina is also an accredited teacher of RAD and passed her exams conducted by RAD examiner Izumi Kimura of Japan. She completed the Dance Arts International (DAI-England) Teachers Course on Jazz under artistic director Georgia Bernasconi. “But I could not done it without her. Her products are part of her job satisfaction. I owe it all to her since I got the proper training,” Gina said. Gina adds that the two of them have made ballet affordable to Dabawenyos. “We give scholarships to deserving students. We do not let financial constraints hamper the development of talent and interest in ballet,” Gina says. Through auditions and a fervent commitment, Gina and Irma give scholarships to deserving students. “Our goal is to make good dancers,” says Irma. “We brought RAD to Davao so Dabawenyos will be at par with the rest of the world. We decide to stay in Davao to uplift ballet standards and upgrade the study of ballet.” She adds that the RAD is serious ballet and a whole set of instructions. The RAD was initially formed with the objective to improve the standard of Classical Ballet training in the UK. It has since grown to become one of the Worlds leading dance education and training organizations, with over 13,000 members, operating in 79 countries worldwide. There are currently over 1,000 students in full-time or part-time teacher training programmes with the Academy and each year, the examination syllabus is taught to more than a quarter of a million students worldwide. Royal Academy of Dance combines French, Italian, And Russian ballet methods to create a wonderfully unique style of ballet. “The RAD movements are characterized by graceful, lyrical arms. Once your child has been trained and accredited with RAD, the child gets the grade level anywhere in the world. All RAD teachers use the same standards, same syllabus and same music,” Irma said. Gina recently came from a trip abroad, where she visited and observed the Oregon Ballet School, Los Angeles Ballet Academy and Valerie Mahatir school in California, all accredited with the RAD. Let your child learn the right way. After all, not all dancers can be teachers. Irma and Gina teach ballet at the HGS on Saturdays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m., grades 2 and 3, eight to ten years old; 11:30 to 12:30 p.m., grades 4 and five, ages 11 to 13 years old; 12:30 to 2:00 p.m., ages six and elementary; 3:00 to 4:00 p.m., primary grades, ages six to eight years old; 4:00 to 5:00 p.m., pre-primary ages, four to five years old. It’s on Tionko, just after Bangko Sentral. I’ve been there twice already: the first time with blogger friends, the night before our flight to Manila last week, and this time with Bob Martin (Mindanao.com, Live in the Philippines, among others). Unfortunately, at neither time was I able to try their food. The first time, we already had dinner somewhere else, and then just went to Kangaroo for coffee. The second time, I did try to order a sandwich, but they forgot my order, even after a couple of times that I went back to the counter to ask for it… Still, I won’t give them a thumbs-down for customer service — the guy at the counter knew just how to handle the situation. The cappuccino over there is pretty decent, at least. Since they’re still in the “soft opening” phase, I guess they can be forgiven for some lapses. Chalk it up to growing pains. The place, though, looks really nice! I like it that the layout is not flat or square. I mean, there are different “levels” to the design of the place: there are the usual tables (some with very comfortable wing chairs), but there are some booths too. And, there’s a semi-separate area for small meetings, equipped with an accordion door. They also have a few tables out front for smokers. Of course, free wifi! When it was still under construction, I thought it was going to be a franchised brand. Turns out it’s a completely homegrown affair. I look forward to seeing Kangaroo establish a level of service that will be worthy of its excellent outward appearance. It really looks like a perfect watering hole for coffee lovers like me. http://www.angdabawenyo.com/2008/05/03/kangaroo-coffee-company/ dinabaw May 5th, 2008, 03:21 PM wala bang gagawa ng Robinson's thread sa Philippine Project on the Rise? nahihiya ba kayo ..lol Rall May 5th, 2008, 03:24 PM guys & goys... now under construction... 700mtrs zipline dinabaw May 5th, 2008, 03:25 PM guys & goys... now under construction... 700mtrs zipline huwaaaaaaaaaaat... di nalang inabot ng 1km !sa Camp Sabros ? The firm, Sutherland Global Services, plans to open new offices in Davao City, Tarlac City and Iloilo and will be hiring more than 5,000 agents from those cities within this year to add to the current 5,500- strong workforce. “The Philippines accounts for the 15 percent of Sutherland’s overall business…With [our] expansion plans, [we] also expect to double the capital expenditure this year,” Craig Bauwens, country manager and vice president for service delivery, said. Bauwens said Sutherland will invest $3,500 per seat. Further, the executive said that 80 percent of their market is the US and Canada, while the remaining 20 percent is being shared by Australia and Europe. “Despite reports that a number of BPO companies in the Philippines are closing down due to the US recession, [we] believe that the slowdown is actually helping [our] business,” Bauwens said. At present, Sutherland has BPO offices in Pampanga, Makati, Naga City, and Davao City. The company specializes in integrated BPO solutions and employs over 21,000 professionals in India, the United States, Philippines, Canada and Mexico. Bauwens said that once it has established its footprint in the Philippines, the firm will position its local offices to attract new markets such as Southeast Asia and other nearby countries. “By integrating highly trained people with state-of-the-art technology and proven business methodologies, Sutherland in the countries will be competing head-on with other BPO giants,” Bauwens said. --Katrina Mennen A. Landco President Alfred Xerez-Burgos, Jr. said his company would invest P700 million to P1.5 billion in the subdivision. He declined to say where it will be. :bash: "I am bullish about the local market especially here, where people have started looking for good houses," he told reporters during the launch of Landco’s Playa Azalea project in the nearby island city of Samal. Mr. Xerez-Burgos said the company would finalize the plan within nine months. He said Landco and the lot owner have agreed in principle about the project, but some details still need to be ironed out. Francis V. Ceballos, Landco executive vice-president, cited the need for more medium and high-end projects in Davao City. Landco earlier said it was investing about P600 million in a 33-hectare property owned by the Floirendo family and develop it into a high-end resort subdivision with a hotel component in Samal City. The company is seeking to develop the property in four years and make the hotel operational by 2012, as it tries to get a chunk of the Davao’s booming property market. Landco first came to Davao 16 years ago when it partnered with the Alcantara Group for the posh Ladislawa Garden Village. It later built two other upscale projects — Woodridge Park and Las Terrazas — with the same group. - BusinessWorld tj_brewed May 5th, 2008, 10:21 PM wala bang gagawa ng Robinson's thread sa Philippine Project on the Rise? nahihiya ba kayo ..lol wala pa kasing rendering henji May 6th, 2008, 12:57 AM wala pa kasing rendering sa sulod sa robinsons, mura lang man ug naglimpyo sa sulod. pero tanang ang mga tawo nakahard-hat. mao na jud na? dinabaw May 6th, 2008, 03:48 AM Pinoy Everest conquerors to see action in Mt. Everest International Marathon The male and female members of the first Philippine expedition team to Mt. Everest who scaled the world’s highest peak in 2006 and 2007 and brought extreme honor and pride to a troubled nation are now setting their sights on a new and more heart pounding challenge. The 8-man team will now be seeing action in the Mt. Everest International 42 K Marathon from the 18,000 foot base camp to the 14,000 foot Namebe Bazaar, a local village camp near the foot on the world’s most treacherous and revered summit in Nepal on May 29. During a special press conference and meeting with the members of the team the other day after they visited Mt. Apo at the Matina Town Square, team leader and former DOTC under secretary Art Valdez, Erwin “Pastour” Emata, Janet Belarmino-Sardena, Carina Dayon-don, Noelle Wenceslao, team physician Dr. Ted Esguerra and technical leader Fred Jamili dis-cussed their preparations for this upcoming en-deavor, which like their ascent to the peak of Mt. Everest is equally as challenging. Sardena, who just gave birth before climbing the summit of Everest in 2007 along with Wenceslao and Mindanaoan Dayondon said that a lot of other teams from all over the globe will be joining this affair which combines both running and alpine mountain climbing at high altitudes. “Medyo mahirap at kakaiba ‘to considering the conditions in Everest, so we’re really preparing hard for this event. We’re doing a lot of running, climbing and we’re living healthy,” she said. Leo Oracion, Emata’s partner during their ascent of Mt. Everest in 2006 is already in Nepal for a series of reconnaissance and acclimatization tasks. On the other hand, Emata said that their visit to Mt. Apo a few days ago via the PNOC trail was part of their training for the grueling marathon. Aside from Mt. Apo the team also scaled Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Occidental. When asked what’s next for the Philippine Everest Team, Emata jokingly said “Our next stop will be the Sahara Desert.” The team will be leaving for Nepal this coming Saturday. In Executive Order No. 12, Duterte appointed Davao Tourism Association (DATA) president Angel Puentespina co-chair of the joint government and private sector Steering Committee. This year’s festival will have the theme “Musanay Lumadnong Kagikan, Yutang Kabilin Panalipdan (Flourishing indigenous heritage, protecting ancestral nations).” The steering committee will plan, organize, manage, and implement the activities of the Kadayawan Festival. Councilor Susan Isabel Reta and Mary Ann Montemayor were named vice chairs for the government and private sectors, respectively, while City Hall chief-of-staff Patricia Melizza Ruivivar and Eriberto Barriga of the private sector will act as the secretariat. The rest of the committee is represented by both the government and private sectors. In his executive order, Duterte said it is fitting that the key players in the tourism industry should steer the Kadayawan Festival because he recognized that the tourism industry in the city is a flourishing sector and a major contributor to the city’s economic progress. The joint government-private sector-led steering committee will enable the city government to effectively balance the concerns of the tourism industry and protect the rights of the city’s indigenous peoples, Duterte said. This year’s Kadawayan is scheduled in time for Indigenous Peoples’ Day. We came from the highlands, the longest zip line in the country, Camp Sabros 4000 feet up. We conquered the highest peak in the country- Mt. Apo, 10,000 feet nearer to the sky. Next, discover the great diving you can do in Davao, then the massive fun you can have on the waters here. Plus! an exclusive island resort that will make you want to stay here longer. Diving in Davao Davao has one of the best dive sites in the Philippines. In these waters, underwater enthusiasts experience unique and magnificent coral reefs that have a rainbow of soft and hard coral gardens, large marine life and schools of fish. Talikud Island, our dive destination for the day, lies in the southwest coast of the Island Garden City of Samal in the Davao Gulf, east of Davao City. Our new friend, introduced to us by our best buddy here Sonny Dizon, Hitoshi Onozawa who is Japanese by blood but definitely Davaoenyo deep down, picked us up from the Waterfront Hotel jetty with his spruced up speedboat to take us to our dive site. We went to Talikud Island where Sonny told us our old and trusted dive master friend Carlos Munda of Wind and Wave Dive Company was anxiously waiting to take us down and show us the underwater sights of Talikud. Talikud Island is a small island excellent for beginners and novice divers, first of all let me say that the water temperature is close to perfect, you can count on calm waters, and the visibility in this dive site is excellent throughout the year. Magnificent marine life Wow, what an excellent variety of corals! Whip corals, gorgonians, large sponges, soft corals. It truly is like you are going through a gorgeous secret garden of corals. Wish I had some of these beautiful babies in my garden at home, fascinating. This wide variety of soft and hard coral gardens is home to numerous exotic small fishes. Aside from the exotic small tropical fishes, you will also encounter large fish schools of jacks, and if you're lucky, you can encounter turtles. A little luckier and you may see a whale shark, and if you're totally lucky, a sighting of a dugong has been reported by some divers. The diving sites in Davao is the Philippine's southern secret. Dive sites here are unexplored and are just waiting to be seen and enjoyed. Guess what, the word is out about diving in Davao on Sports Unlimited, as of this day this southern diving secret, is a secret no longer. There is no dull diving day in Davao. Davao delicacies When you spend time in the water, hunger usually strikes soon after. Luckily, when you go diving with Wind and Wave, they prepare delicious Davao delicacies ahead of time so that right after your dive, you can dive into the food. The food was not only flavorful but also very fresh. This is island living at its best, great diving, good food, being on a comfortable boat, floating on crystal clear waters with the sun smiling down on you. Learn to dive. There's a whole underwater world waiting to be explored and enjoyed. Life won't wait for you, so we say, do as much as possible while you still can, there's a whole lot of water out there, so why not dive in. Discovering Davao The more we travel through our islands, the more we realize that we have yet to experience and see everything our beautiful, blessed country has. The more you discover Davao, the more you see all the beauty and bounty of nature, land and sea this exotic south of the islands of the Philippines has to offer. As you go island hopping here, you will see secluded white-sand beaches bordered by virgin rain forests. All is quiet on these islands, except for the sound of the gentle lapping of the waves against our boat, fresh tropical breeze blowing through our hair; all these combined will totally make you want to convert to the bohemian way of life. Trust us, island cruising like this offers urbanites like us a whole new perspective on how the sumptuous scenery of the islands captures how wonderful, powerful and magical nature really is, and how it feeds the very core of our spirits. Kembali coast After our dive and island cruising, our friend Hitoshi took us to his new pride and joy on the Island Garden City of Samal. We dropped our anchor at the sight of the soon-to-be developed 50-hectare Kembali Coast Residential Beach Community. Kembali coast will be the first exclusive, high-end leisure-residential beach community to rise in southern Mindanao. As soon as we arrived in Kembali, we instantly felt the "madayaw”" beach ambiance. Madayaw is a warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word "dayaw" that means good. We were greeted with a gift hanged on our necks, a charming and attractive native necklace made of corn kernels smoothened and shined to a shell-like appearance, another proof of island Pinoy ingenuity. As we walked further into Kembali, we were then offered what must be the universal symbol of the tropical world, coconuts freshly picked from the "tree of life.” The staff in Kembali proudly showed me how fresh their coconut juice is, they skillfully and meticulously opened my coconut right in front of me and then all the drink needed was a straw. Water rides, water toys If you want to experience fun and thrill in the water here in Davao all you need to do is head on to Kembali. We have to say, we've been on many water toys over the years so we were surprised when we saw water toys here in Kembali that we were not familiar with. What is this first one called? My son Mathew could not care less: he just wanted to get on it. It looked like the doughnut ride with a twist. Here we go Mathew boy, hold on son, if you fall off this thing it could feel very unpleasant, but Mathew did not give a care in the world. Marc and my son loved every second of this, I was too. This is like getting on a ride in Disneyland. Being on this ride makes you feel like a kid again. Wait a minute; my son is really a kid. Marc is a kid in a man's body that's for sure, and I, well I like any kind of speed when in the water. That was great, alright, next ride, my son instantly says. Slow down Mr. Driver, Jackie is seriously telling the driver to slow down. Marc as always is telling him to go faster. Mathew is having too much fun on this ride to say anything. We started this ride nice and dry; we ended up being all drenched. Mathew wanted more; this kid just can't get enough of this stuff. The flying fish is a water ride that is hard to pass up. We've been on it before but my son never has, and he convinced his Tita Jackie to come ride with him, she could not let him down but pleaded to the driver to please not go too fast. Mathew asked me, mom why is it called flying fish if we don't go fast and fly? This kid is incredibly brave or maybe he just really exudes the spirit of fun. What a great way to spend a few hours in the sea. Kembali, when it comes to toys in the water, rules. Bali Bali resort After playing in the water, Sonny said we were stopping at a friend's place to have a little chow, chill and wind down there before heading back to our hotel. Welcome to Bali Bali. Wow, wow, wow! Check this place out. Who knew there was such a cozy and luxurious place like this back here? Bali Bali is one of those places that you want to tell everybody about but at the same time you don't, so you feel it's your own private hideaway in Davao. This place is so pretty; you almost think you are at movie set. This place reeks of romance, perfect for a wedding, honeymoon, perfect for the whole family. It may be a resort, but it does have that homey feeling to it. The owners, friends of Sonny, welcomed us with opened arms and prepared a sumptuous merienda that we welcomed as well with opened arms. I love the way they set up the pool and the Jacuzzi. You can get the best of both worlds here at Bali Bali, if you want to hang around the pool; you still get a fantastic view of the ocean. What a perfect way to end another dynamite day in Davao. Hamiguitan Range to be declared as a World Heritage Site. Rochie Ravelo, barangay captain of Magsaysay in Lupon, Davao Oriental, said they are now preparing their presentation for the Unesco officials who are expected to arrive Tuesday. It was learned that Governor Corazon Malanyaon had earlier forwarded the formal information to Unesco. Ravelo said the Mt. Hamiguitan Range situated in the boundaries of Mati City, Governor Generoso and San Isidro towns in Davao Oriental is host to 2,000 hectares of bonsai forest and other fora and fauna endemic in the province. Provincial Board Member and former San Isidro mayor Tina Yu said the mountain range is also host to a plant that is now being studied by scientists as a possible cure for cancer. The Mt. Hamiguitan Range has a total area of 6,834 hectares. Ravelo said that with the declaration of Mt. Hamiguitan as a world heritage site, the mountain would be more protected despite its earlier declaration as a protected area by the Philippine government. Governor Malanyaon earlier said that she plans to make Mt. Hamiguitan as her province's showcase to invite tourists and investors. The proposal of the executive department, represented by the City Environmental and Natural Resources Office (CENRO) is now awaiting the approval of the City Council. The proposal aims to explore all means to re-use, recycle, and compost approximately 75% of the waste materials in the city. Only 20% of the city’s wastes are residuals which are non-biodegradable wastes that cannot be recycled, reused, or composted anymore. CENRO’s plan spans at least 10 years, and in my opinion, effects will not be felt or seen right away. I haven’t read the plan yet, but I hope there’s a component for educating Davaoeños on how proper solid waste management can be done right in their homes, and how important it is in preserving our environment. Together with the ban on aerial spraying, the regulation of smoking areas, and the pending watershed code, the reduction of solid wastes in the city will contribute a lot with the city’s aim of sustainable development. The students included two exemplary students from Davao -- Nadine Abenoja of University of the Philippines-Mindanao, and Kristelle Jarabello of Ateneo de Davao University. Aptly themed 'The Best Meets the Best,' the program allowed the country's future leaders to interact and gain knowledge from the most prominent executive leaders today. "Launched in 2003, BOP aims to provide well-qualified students with a new understanding of key global business and economic issues, through a program of site tours plus in-depth discussions with management professionals from a wide spectrum of leading American multinational companies in Manila," said AmCham executive director Robert Sears. "With this program, we aim to promote a venue for the constructive competitive exchange of ideas among aspiring young leaders from various universities across the country," Sears said. "In addition, we at AmCham seek to make tomorrow's leaders aware of the contributions of American multinational businesses to the country's development." This year's participants, each chosen through a competitive application process, are made up of a select group of college students from prominent universities in the country, which also included University of the Philippines (Diliman, Baguio and Cebu), De La Salle University, University of the East, University of Asia and the Pacific, Far Eastern University, Centro Escolar University, Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila, St. Louis University in Baguio, Holy Angels University in Pampanga, and Silliman University. To help these students enhance mutual understanding, cooperation, and communication skills, especially with AmCham member companies, participants were exposed to the real world operations of multinational companies through site visits and meetings with top company officers. Among the companies that were visited this year include CitiBank, Chevron, Wachovia, Bellevue Hotel, Goodyear Philippines, Ogilvy & Mather Phils., International SOS, SunPower Philippines, Ford Philippines, Philam, Philip Morris, Convergys and the US Embassy-Commercial Services. To harness the students' analytical and problem-solving skills in the context of real-life business environment, participants were asked to apply their knowledge and work together on a business plan, at the end of the company visits. Using the case study of Lamoiyan Corporation, the participants were divided into teams, composed of students from different schools, and required to present their output to a prestigious panel of judges. The three best projects and a best presenter were recognized in a ceremony during the closing awards dinner. Bagging the first place is the students' product development plan featuring Happee Solutions with oregano, by Kristell Jarabello (Ateneo de Davao), Gerswane Omaguing (Silliman University), Rachel Nava (PLM), Liza Pamintuan (Holy Angels University, Pampanga), and Alexter Bryan Uy (DLSU). A close second was Hapee Fusion, a toothbrush and toothpaste combination project by Bea Camille Dedicatoria (University of Asia and the Pacific), Nadine Abenoja (UP-Mindanao), Kathrina Gabriel (University of Baguio), Ken Chester Wu (DLSU), and Kurt Dayrit (Holy Angels Univ, Pampanga). The third place went to the group who presented Flosee, floss for children, by Conrad Lee (DLSU), Gretel Kelly Delos Santos (Silliman University), Ronalyn Laxamana (Holy Angels University), Pamela Ticzon (PLM), and Mary Love Siy (UA&P). For her ability to communicate their business plan with clarity and comprehensiveness, Siy also was named as the single best presenter of the event. In addition, students also had an opportunity to interact with the alumni of the BOP and other AmCham members, creating excellent opportunities for them to network with one another as well as with guests from AmCham member firms. "These students are extremely motivated, with some giving up their summer break to participate in this program. We also extend our gratitude to the corporations for spending valuable time and effort to this program," said BOP committee chair David Joseph Morin, who is also Goodyear Philippines president and managing director. According to Morin, "the program underscores AmCham's commitment to promote experiential learning, which gets students out of the classroom and into real-world business settings and competitions, where theory and practice come together in rich and meaningful ways." "You can look at a company from afar and do a lot speculating about what might be going on within the organization. BOP puts a human face on corporate leadership and gives our students a seat at the table of some of the country's most interesting corporations," Morin added. davaoeagle May 7th, 2008, 12:04 AM Wednesday, May 07, 2008 Councilor: DepEd should grab LET topnotchers Sunstar Davao DAVAO City Councilor Ma. Belen Sunga-Acosta urged the Department of Education (DepEd) to create policies aimed at encouraging Licensure Exam for Teachers (LET) topnotchers to work in public schools. In her privilege speech Tuesday, Acosta said this could be made possible by facilitating and fast tracking the inclusion of LET topnotchers in the public school teachers roster. Acosta also cited and commended this year's LET topnotchers from the University of Mindanao, Holy Cross of Davao College, and Ateneo de Davao University. From the exams conducted on April 6, 2008, the results of which were released almost a month later on April 30, 2008, Teacher Training Institutions in Davao City produced the following topnotchers in the Elementary Level: Benjelita Laguidong Babao of the University of Mindanao - placed second at the national level, with a rating of 90.20%, while Nithel Fe Taguibolosan Cornelio of the Holy Cross of Davao College and Genelyn Ibanez Rosendo of the University of Mindanao both placed 10th with a rating of 87.20%. In the Secondary (High School) Level, Edwin Oscar Ulgasan Gutierrez Jr. of the Ateneo de Davao University placed 8th with a rating of 88.00 percent. "These four LET passers have shown that the education institutions in these parts of the country are at par, if not more outstanding, than some of the more prestigious education institutions in the country," Acosta said. For the August 2007 LET results, out of 57,723 examinees in the Secondary level, only 16,811 or 29.12 percent passed. In the Elementary level, out of 66,709 teacher examinees, only 18,376 or 27.55 percent passed. "This means that to top the examination or to be within the top 10 is indeed an achievement for which all Dabawenyos should be proud," she added. However, Acosta bemoaned the long process that new teachers have to go through to find work. "This representation thought all along that LET topnotchers automatically are given first priority in teacher positions in the public schools. However, I was apprised that even topnotchers still have to undergo the usual application procedure," Acosta said. According to Acosta, who is also a member of the local school board, they hope that the policymakers in the head office of DepEd reconsider this and make measures that would entice and encourage Teacher's Board topnotchers to teach in the public schools where their talent and dedication are directly and urgently needed. "I do not see why they still have to go through the usual outine when they have proven their mettle as topnotchers. It would serve the DepEd well as well as the Davao City School Board, and the constituency, that these bright young teachers find it easy to get into the roster of public school teachers, rather than be employed in private institutions, or join the brain drain and think of teaching in other countries," she said. In the appointment of teachers, Acosta said those who top the licensure exams ought to be given priority through an "express lane" to ensure that DepEd, and in turn our public schoolteachers, get the best. (GLP) oradude23 May 7th, 2008, 01:13 AM Wednesday, May 7, 2008 | MANILA, PHILIPPINES Corporate News Holcim prepares for cement industry growth TOP CEMENT maker Holcim Philippines, Inc. will spend P2 billion this year as it upgrades its equipment in preparation for as much as 10% growth in the local cement industry. "We’re allotting [50% more capital expenditure] to accelerate the refurbishment of plants in Bulacan, Davao and La Union," Holcim Chief Operating Officer Ian S. Thackwray said on the sidelines of the company’s stockholders’ meeting yesterday. He expects the company to perform better this year. "We’re cautiously optimistic because the growth is largely influenced by how sustainable the government’s infrastructure spending is," he told reporters. "There is also a seasonality in demand, with the company last year experiencing a decline in volume starting in the second half due to the rainy season," Mr. Thackwray added. Tight competition in the industry also brought about slower demand for cement products, coupled by increasing coal prices, he added. Holcim imports coal from Indonesia and uses it to fuel the production of cement, which has limestone as the primary raw material. The company will likely to keep cement prices in the coming months after raising these in the first quarter, Mr. Thackwray said. Holcim cement products cost between P185 and P195 per bag. "But that would be subject to future cost increases of coal, which is 40% of our cost. All the same, competition is also subject to high costs of electricity," he said. Yesterday, the company said its first-quarter net income fell by 2.6% to P463.37 million. In a presentation to stockholders, Mr. Thackwray said net income in 2007 went up by 47% to P2.2 billion as a result of government spending on infrastructure and property purchases of Filipinos working abroad. Holcim has a market share of about a third and sells four cement products. — Lovely Nica P. Lee oradude23 May 7th, 2008, 01:16 AM EXCERPTS ONLY ... Favila presented recently a special citation to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 during the PQA Ceremony held at the Rizal Hall of Malacañan, recognizing the regional office’s efforts in pursuing ISO 9001:2000 certification for its Quality Management System. The occasion was attended by Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo. With the citation, DTI 11 joins the ranks of organizations, both government and private, which were recognized by the Philippine Government for championing quality and productivity in their business endeavors. Among the recipients of the PQA are: Airlift Asia, Inc. (2007), which received its award together with DTI 11, First Sumiden Circuits, Inc. (2006), Johnson and Johnson (Philippines), Inc. (2006), National Transmission Corp. (2006) and NEDA Region 1 (2006). ISO certificates were also presented to: # Land Bank of the Philippines, Trust Operations and Asset Management Services and Wholesale Commercial Lending Operations; and # Civil Aeronautics Board, Processing New Applicant and Renewal of Permit for Authority to Operate Business in the Field of Aviation and/or Engaged in Air Commerce. The secretary’s citation recognized DTI XI as a “pioneer and trailblazer in the delivery of government’s basic services, pushing the limits of excellence, having re-engineered itself to become the First National Government Agency in the country whose entire management system has been ISO 9001:2000 certified.” Alongside Secretary Favila, the following assisted the President in giving out the awards: Antonio Kalaw, president of Development Academy of the Philippines, Angelica Fraginal, president of Philippine Society for Quality, Amb. Donald Dee, chair Emeritus of PCCI and Amb. Cesar B. Bautista, co-Chair of the Private Sector National Competitiveness Council. DTI Center for International Competitiveness, which spearheaded the PQA ceremony, sees the need for DTI 11 to actively involve in the PQA roadshows, to share best practices and to provide a benchmark in establishing and maintaining Quality Management System in the government. With the urgency of implementing EO 605, which mandates institutionalizing the structure, mechanisms and standards to implement the government quality management program, and with the publication of the 1st Government Quality Management Systems Standards (GQMSS), DTI 11 foresees greater responsibility in providing expertise for government agencies in pursuing quality management system. The Philippine Quality Award is the highest level of national recognition for exemplary organizational performance, conferred annually to qualified organizations that garner the qualifying conditions per year. It sets a standard of excellence to help Filipino organizations achieve world-class performance and serves as a “template” for competitiveness based on the principles of Total Quality Management (TQM). It is comparable to the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award (MBNQA) of the US and those in Europe and Asia. This was the edge of the city which made Western Wats, the largest data collection company in the world, to finally open a branch at NCCC Davao. Western Wats Philippines President Jose Antonio San Gabriel explained that what made the company try Davao is the fact that it has about 42,000 qualified manpower that the company could make use of. San Gabriel further said that Cagayan de Oro, which may have been quite advanced than the former, is only producing 20,000 potential workers which is not enough to fill in the needs of BPO companies. Western Wats has seen and also believed on the quality of students and professionals that are English proficient and at the same time possess an empowered bearing. After setting the trend of BPO industry in Cebu City, Western Wats bravely poured in a P60 million capital to start their branch in Davao City. Western Wats is the first market research call center that will test the waters in Davao. It will hire agents, train them for three days, and allow them to start the job right after. Here, the agents do not sell, do not encounter irate callers, and suffer the disadvantages of shifting. Instead, agents simply need to be English proficient to collect data for a wide variety of agencies. Davao will then be the home of market research which posted a big demand especially by large multinationals that need data collection services for their business plans and how to launch their product and services. "Our clients love Filipino agents because they are understood better than Indians and even by the native speakers," said San Gabriel. "We allow our clients to monitor our agents and so far, they have been contended with our workers," he said. It has been observed that the entry of BPO companies is not as fast as Cagayan de Oro and Cebu City. This was believed to be caused by the travel advisory as well as the peace and order image that is wrongfully attached to the city. "However, with the entry of Western Wats, we believe that all the other large BPO companies will follow just like how the said company also started the trend in Cebu City," said an NCCC official. (PIA) [top] ===================================================================== sinulot daw natin ang WesternWats ,agree ka ba peng ? Peng Hok May 7th, 2008, 07:14 AM ^^ Yan yung sabi ni Mr. San Gabriel. They long had accreditation to operate in that city, but still chose to be delayed a bit because they wanted to operate here. Aside from the huge manpower, Western Wats seemingly suggested that it would just be logical to operate in Mindanao's most economically important city, as they did in Cebu in the Visayas. Manila was not an option due to its high cost of doing business. dinabaw May 7th, 2008, 07:18 AM ^^ baka ginud time mo lang sa Manila atty. peng kaya nag established dito ;) Sutherland Global to expand in rural RP A New York-based multinational company engaged in information technology and business process outsourcing in the Philippines plans to increase its call-center seats here by more than two-fold. Why go up when we have enough space? diba? And if tinuod man na below sea level ta, im sure maremejohan na nila. HK did it! KC, with the Ayalas, they will develop the property and would initiate a project that would boost the development in their respective business parks. For example, Cebu Business Park - ALI built a mall (Ayala Center Cebu) and a hotel - Marriot. Then sa Makati, they also have the Ayala Center aka Glorietta and Greenbelt. With Sta Lucia kc, they will just develop the road networks then sell the lots. Tapos, they will leave the upcoming constructions to the lot owners. :( Sad to say, maraming speculative investors ang nakabili sa RCC. davaob4now May 7th, 2008, 10:04 AM Have not heard of a Rustans here in Davao.
