Davao bets bag silvers in Subic triathlon
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan
Sunstar Davao
FOUR Davao City triathletes bagged silver medals in the ITU Subic International Triathlon 2008 Sunday at the Subic Bay Freeport.
Holiday Gym & Spa bet Paulo Dino Ouano clocked two hours, 29 minutes, and 22 seconds for 16th place overall, but submitted the second bets time in the male 25 to 29 years old category.
Samba's Paul Villocino, 18th overall with 2:30.22, grabbed the second spot in 20-24 category, while Leslie Herrero, 50th over-all with 2:49.29, finished runner-up in the female 20-24 event.
Ernesto "Bong" Rivera also salvaged silver in the 55-59 Division.
Davao bets Ryan Sia, Felina Tadiaman and Cossette Plaza also competed in the prestigious race organized by the Triathlon Association of the Philippines (Trap).
Sia timed 2:51.2 to land 83rd in the overall ranking, while Tadiaman registered 3:13.53 for the 136th spot and Plaza clocked 3:30.37 for the 163rd slot.
"I strongly believe that a lot of potential athletes could be discovered if only they were given a chance to shine by supporting them and exposing them in these kind of races," Ouano said.
"We were amazed by the hospitality and trust the Sunkist Trihard have given us. They allowed us to banner their team in the team competition. But our accumulative time fell short against stronger times like that of Polo Tri headed by Alaska's Ace Fred Uytengso and Fernando Zobel de Ayala," he added.
Ouano thanked Sunkist Trihard, Holiday Gym and Spa, Metro Lifestyle, OOCL, Greg Banzon, Victor Magno, and other personalities for supporting their stints.
davaoeagle May 14th, 2008, 07:21 PM Arroyo brings Bello back as Cabinet secretary
By Joyce Pangco Pañares
Manila Standard Today
May 15, 2008
PRESIDENT Arroyo has appointed presidential adviser Silvestre Bello III as Cabinet Secretary in a continuing revamp of the official family that started last month.
Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye said Bello would assume his post once outgoing Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo was confirmed by the Commission on Appointments as the new Civil Service Commission chairman.
Saludo, who was appointed in February, replaced Karina David, who retired.
Bunye himself is set to leave the Cabinet in July to join the Monetary Board, the policy-making body of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
Bunye, who said earlier that he would transfer to the board on June 22, confirmed he would assume his new post on July 3.
The six-year term of the board’s two members—Vicente Valdepeñas Jr. and Raul Boncan—is set to expire in July.
Before his appointment, Bello served as Presidential Adviser for New Government Centers for the last nine months, identifying ideal sites for national government centers outside Metro Manila.
He also served as general manager and chief executive of the Philippine Reclamation Authority from January to December 2006, and president of the Philippine National Oil Co. Development and Management Corp.
A former Justice secretary and solicitor general, Bello was one of the longest-serving lead negotiators in the peace talks with the Communist Party of the Philippines from 2001 to 2004.
Other Cabinet officials affected by the revamp were Robert Dean Barbers, who was replaced by Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano as head of the Philippine Tourism Industry, and Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, whose concurrent position as presidential adviser on political affairs will go to Bunye.
Election lawyer Leila de Lima, who represented opposition candidates during the May polls last year, was also appointed head of the Commission on Human Rights.
President Arroyo said a civilian post was also awaiting retired military chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr., who was replaced by Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano.
The President yesterday approved the promotion of two senior police officers to the rank of chief superintendent, and seven superintendents to the next higher rank of senior superintendent.
The new star-rank police officials are Chief Supt. Cecillio Calleja Jr., Region 5 deputy director for administration, and Chief Supt. Darius Tuazon Sr., Region 6 deputy director for administration.
Sworn into office as senior superintendents were Sonny David of the Maritime Group; Aaron Aquino, PRO 11; Danilo Garcia, directorate for intelligence; Danny Reyes, Region 12; Robin Cano Sr.; Roel Obusan, Traffic Management Group; and Heriberto Olitoquit, Region 13. With Rene M. Alviar
oradude23 May 14th, 2008, 08:16 PM Talks start to intensify trade links between Sulawesi, S. Mindanao
By Carlo P. Mallo
ANOTHER round of exploratory talks to intensify cooperation among key trade and tourism industry players from Northern Sulawesi and the cities of Davao and General Santos in Southern Mindanao have started early this week with the arrival of 16 delegates in Davao City.
Indonesian Consul General Lalu Malik Partawana told reporters Wednesday that this is just only the start of exploratory talks between Northern Sulawesi and Southern Mindanao, which are also under the sub-regional group of the Brunei-Indonesia-Philippines-Malaysia East Asean Growth Area (Bimp-Eaga).
"We want to have more talks between the two areas in the future and more cooperation between the two," Partawana said.
The consul general also stressed the importance of the cooperation among the three areas -- Northern Sulawesi, Davao and Gensan -- due to their close proximity with each other and the numerous commonalities shared.
"We are almost like the same. We are like long lost cousins," Partawana said, adding that by helping each other, these areas will benefit more from each other.
"We will not be competing with each other, but rather complimenting each other," he said.
Among the issues to be discussed are the feasibility of a bilateral cooperation on the development and production of agricultural products, especially coconuts and palm oil.
But another concern that will be discussed is the problem on the entry of illegal fishers on the common sea border shared by the Philippines and Indonesia.
Shelley Sondakh, executive secretary of the Bimp-Eaga Secretariat, headed the Indonesian delegation, while Angel Puentespina, president of the Davao Association of Travel Agencies, headed the Philippine delegation.
henji May 15th, 2008, 12:23 AM ang problema kasi sa mga taxis natin, mga dilapidated na . lalo na yung mga kia pride . kung gagawa man sila ng non aircon sana yung mga bagong units gagamitin nila . turn off nalang ang aircon . during the morning naka on . pag gabi dun i ooff . i think ganito ginagawa sa china . pangit tingnan ng mga surplus kia taxis . lalo na yung mga sobrang luma na .
just my 2 cents :D
Appearance is not really a no.1 factor basta limpyo lang nya presentable lang ang driver, niya accomodating, but-an, to add dapat dili binuangan ang metro.

Jewel of Samal unveiled
SOON an exclusive and luxurious resort living community will rise on the Island Garden City of Samal.
Landco-Pacific, the company behind the conceptualization, building and management of the country's high-end lifestyle communities, and Anflocor, Davao City's leading corporation with Damosa Land Inc., as the property management and development arm, forged their partnership to the creation of Samal Island's most exciting and upscale seaside community enclave -- the Playa Azalea.
The Marina of the Pearl Farm Beach Resort was transformed into a stylish tropical setting for the soft launching and initial public presentation of Playa Azalea.
It was an apt setting for the event that will give the same feel for the soon-to-rise resort village along the Davao Gulf. Davao's A-list guests from the business, political and corporate spheres were entertained with nothing less than grand.
To publicly present this joint venture, Landco Pacific's president and CEO Alfred Xerez-Burgos Jr. and chairman and founder of Anflocor, Antonio O. Floirendo Sr., gave their speeches and expressed their gratitude and desire for a successful collaborative undertaking.
The exchange of trust between the two prime movers was represented in the company's exchanging of presents.
Following the partnership salutation given by the vice-president of the Anflo Group of Companies, Antonio Floirendo Jr., was the highlight of the celebration -- Playa Azalea development plan unveiling.
The Playa Azalea site development presentation proved more significant with the presence and representation of the VIPs of the two forging companies.
Representing the Anflocor Group of Companies as the landowner were Antonio O. Floirendo Sr., with his wife Nenita; vice-president of Damosa Land Inc. Ricardo R. Floirendo; Antonio R. Floirendo Jr., and Maricris F. Brias, VP-Anflo Group.
The partner and developer, Landco Pacific Corp. was represented by the president and COO Alfred Xerez-Burgos, Jr. with Francis V. Ceballos, EVP and chief operating officer; Gerard C. Marcelo, AVP/Strategic Business Unit; Ging Relativo, chief financial officer, and Shella Laxa-Sarmiento, marketing manager for VisMin.
Capping the event was the spectacular display of fireworks over the Playa Azalea on Samal Island.
The resort-village development, which is very visible from the Marina, gave a perfect vantage point of view for the nightscape extravaganza, a special treat every Davao city-dweller surely enjoyed and missed for the past few years.
The P600 million Playa Azalea development will sit on a 33-hectare property and will take four years to complete.
The luxe resort village will have 800 lots for sale cut at 250-300 square meters each and the villagers will enjoy amenities befitting of a high-end seaside resort including a private white sand stretch.
A posh hotel will rise beside the village that will be operational in 2012. (Jinggoy Salvador)

Aw. I was reading through the previous pages and found something amusing about discussions on taxis. And I agree with our forumers that taxis are not the most accurate criteria for judging a locality's urbanity. Gaya ng sabi ko, aanhin naman ang mga magagandang taxis kung ang katabi nitong tumatakbo sa mga makikitid na daan ay mga pedicabs.

The problem kasi with some officials is that they prematurely announce unconfirmed projects. Kaya ayan tuloy, their constituents are given false hopes. I believe the supposed entry of WW in one locality was announced as early as last year (I will try to rummage through the thread archives because that same announcement was posted by one forumer). One year had passed and everybody was just shocked when WW opened its doors in Davao. Sana man lang local officials are responsible enough not to make claims for as long as the same are not yet confirmed. It is best to await for the confirmation to come from the investor itself.
yes he is that affected..even to the point of accusing....hahahahaha

dinabaw May 15th, 2008, 03:34 AM Laviña pushes Waling-waling as nat’l flower
Councilor Peter Laviña has submitted a resolution urging the President and Congress to proclaim the Waling-waling (Vanda Sanderiana) as the official national flower of the Philippines.
In his proposed resolution, Laviña said there is a need to “correct a historical wrong when colonial American Governor General Frank Murphy declared… the sampaguita (Jasminum sambac) to be the national flower of the Philippine Islands.”
That declaration was contained in Proclamation No. 652 issued on February 1, 1934.
Laviña said like the Americans, the sampaguita, also known as Arabian Jasmine, is “not a native of the Philippines.”
“Even its name is Spanish. Its origin is traced to India and Arabia. It is a small scented flower of a vine or a shrub which does not symbolize the Filipino people, their character, cultural values, and visions,” Laviña said.
He said the Waling-waling, on the other hand, is “a true native and endemic of the Philippines, found originally in Mindanao particularly in the mountain areas of Davao, Cotabato, and Zamboanga.”
“When discovered by Europeans, it was described in 1894 as ‘the grandest novelty introduced for years’ into Europe, and in 1927 as ‘a magnificent orchid,’ and now known worldwide as the ‘king’ of orchids,” he added.
Laviña said the Waling-waling symbolizes the Filipino spirit by its endemicity or nativeness to the Philippines, its beauty and grace, majestic bearing, resiliency and powerful attractive qualities, its role in the legends, myths and traditions of the Filipino people particularly by the lumads, its national and international popularity and acceptance, its humility, and its independence as it grows even without support or caring.
“The Waling-waling has already been declared as the official flower of the City of Davao, and many Davaoeños are campaigning that it be declared as the national flower, including Datu Bago awardee Charita Puentespina and the Floriculture Industry of Davao, Inc.” Laviña said.
He also said Rep. Vincent Garcia at the Lower House and the late Senator Rene Cayetano at the Senate sponsored proposals to proclaim the Waling-waling as the national flower, but neither chamber passed the measure and has since been archived. Diana Lhyd Suelto

Royal Mandaya to build 90-room resort hotel
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2008-03-19
THE Royal Mandaya Hotel will build a 90-room hotel with a resort concept near the SM City Davao mall in the prime Ecoland area.
Fernando Aquino, resident manager of the hotel, said the Escandor family, owner of the hotel, already bought the 2.5 hectare property and that it has already drafted the plan for the resort-hotel.
“The construction will probably start at the last quarter of the year,” Aquino who joined the hotel last month after the family signed up with his Banig Management Inc. to manage the hotel.
The management decided to embark on the project because of the good economy of the city, he said. “The economy of the city is growing tremendously,” he said.
In a press conference, Aquino said the plan is to the make the hotel a family oriented one as it will feature a big swimming pool, a zoo and other amenities that will cater to families who want to spend time together.
However, he said he could not give the exact amount that will be used in setting up the hotel although the owners already spent about P200 million in acquiring the prime property which is near two big condominiums.
Part of the hotel, Aquino added, will be a convention center which will have a 1,800 seating capacity to attract medium-sized conventions.
Earlier, some officials of tourism industry organizations in the city like Margarita Montemayor, chair of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area Tourism Council, said the private sector must lead in investing in infrastructure to lure visitors to the city.
Montemayor made the comment as tourism industry stakeholders have complained about the lack of a bigger convention venue, a convention center which has a 3,000-seating capacity, so it could attract big conventions in the country.
Aquino admitted that the hotel has aggressively marketed itself to local convention organizers in the Davao Region, particularly the local government units. Between early this year and until August, the Commission on Audit has already booked the hotel for its convention.
Among the areas identified for its marketing plan are the newly-created Mati City in Davao Oriental, Digos City in Davao del Sur and General Santos City. The hotel has also conducted a sales blitz in Cebu as it plans to set up an office in Manila. “We are going into a massive marketing blitz,” he said.
The marketing blitz is necessary because the hotel is increasing its rates on rooms and food and beverages by 15 percent starting next month. Aquino explained that the hotel management decided to increase its rates as it has already refurbished the hotel to make it more attractive to clients.
He added the hotel management already spent P33 million for the refurbishment activities, including the addition of 14 rooms. Each room has a budget of P1.5 million. By the end of this year, the hotel will have 161 rooms as another 100 rooms will be added by next year, he added.
________________________
ibig sabihin, 161 rooms na ang RM palma gil this year at mag eexpand sila to 261 rooms next year. i wonder kung saan sila maglalagay ng additional rooms kasi wala ng space doon pwera na lang kung finally mabili nila yung front lot or utilize the parking area.
at sa ecoland branch naman na itatayo nila, according sa news tabi daw ng 2 big condominiums, so that would be near the Eco 4000 and One Oasis condos. saan kaya doon banda? my guess is sa tabi ng Eco 4000.
parang may basehan nga ang filinvest nung sabihin nila na matina/ecoland area ang next CBD ng davao, although sa isip ko baka ibig nyang sabihin next to bajada/lanang. hmmm basing sa mga U/C and proposals, south (one oasis, RM hotel, st. john, filinvest maa, etc.) is giving north (ayala, robinsons, damosa) a good fight while central is flexing its muscles with (magallanes condos, central park hotel, sutherland, etc.)
:)
Peng Hok May 15th, 2008, 04:11 AM ^^
Palaging fully booked ang Royal Mandaya. It is but logical that they expand their current facility to meet the demand.
One hundred additional rooms? Saan kaya nila yan ilalagay? Eh clear naman sa news na iba pa yung sa ecoland na 90 rooms... Hmmmm...

ano po ba ang na benefit ng davao sa ASEAN Tourism Forum? kasi wala naman po akong nabalitaan na big businesses coming from the countries na kasali sa forum na yun...and wala din new flights from those countries na included sa forum na yun...na like ba nila ang davao??? did they consider davao as indeed a tourist destination? if yes marami sanang tourists from their countries and marami din sana ang nag ooffer ng flights connecting davao to their countries directly...
sana yung mga countries na may consular office sa davao mag open ng flights from/to their countries...

Peng Hok May 15th, 2008, 08:27 AM Construction of Ayala Center to start before year ends
By Carlo P. Mallo
THE Floirendo-owned Damosa Land Inc. is pouring in investments in the real estate industry with three major projects lined up for implementation this year.
At the celebration of the company's Diamond Anniversary on Monday, the company unveiled its three major projects for 2008, starting off with the much- anticipated joint venture with Ayala Land Inc. involving the development of the prime nine-hectare property of the Floirendos in Bajada, Davao City to a mall complex.
In an interview, Edgar Villaver, general manager of Damosa Land Inc., said the project dubbed as Ayala Center Davao will be a joint venture of Ayala Land Inc. and Damosa Land Inc. as well as affiliate companies of Damosa, such as Anflocor and Pitrade.
Villaver said the first phase of the program will be the construction of the business processing outsourcing part of the project.
"It will be started by June 2008, while the retail and mall complex will be started by the end of the year," Villaver said.
Apart from the business processing outsourcing and mall complexes, the proposed land development will also include the construction of a hotel complex and commercial offices. The first phase of the project is to be completed by June 2009.
Another project of Damosa Land is the development of a residential-hotel-resort complex within the 33-hectare property of the Floirendos in Limao in the Island Garden City of Samal.
According to Villaver, the project will start in the third quarter of this year.
Damosa Land is also expected to start the construction of the Mindanao Jockey and Country Club, a racetrack, residential, and eco-tourism park, at the end of the year.
"It will consist of a residential area, an eco-tourism park, and of course the race track," Villaver said.
The Mindanao Jockey and Country Club will be constructed in Marapangi, Toril.

Il Tenore May 15th, 2008, 08:31 AM ^^I'm sure, pag tapos na tong lahat, wala na ako dito sa Davao... sigh...
and about sa Ayala... wala bang bagong rendering? kasi, kung unang rendering sila magbebase, ok lang sa'kin..
Peng Hok May 15th, 2008, 08:36 AM ^^
The rendering earlier shown by one of our insiders is still not final. But far more important than that is the fact that Ayala Center Davao is inevitably on its way. :)
Il Tenore May 15th, 2008, 08:49 AM ^^hmm.. let's just see what will happen sa ayala in the future...
Peng Hok May 15th, 2008, 08:52 AM ^^
"In the Future" is an understatement. It might create an impression that the Ayala project here in Davao is a product of mere conjecture which may or may not materialize. The more appropriate description would have been "in less than a month's time."

tj_brewed May 15th, 2008, 09:00 AM Anyway, Im really excited with the projects that we have in Davao. Unlike in some cities here in Metro Manila or other cities in the country where condo projects are being constructed or proposed one building at a time, ours is one complex at a time :D.
And with the proposals that we have in the u/c thread, it may look like we only have 4 condo projects which are u/cs or on its way but in reality we actually have more condo buildings to come. The projects that we currently have are:
ECO4000 Residences
Magallanes Residences
One Oasis Davao
(not including the proposed condos of DMCI and Filinvest in Maa)
Three condo projects lang. But these are complexes which would contain several condominium buildings per complex. So for those who are not from Davao and are not familiar with the projects (and who thought that we only have 3 u/c condo projects), we actually have almost a dozen condo buildings to be built in Davao City.
ECO4000 Residences Himeji Condo Building
ECO4000 Residences Osaka Condo Building
One Oasis Davao Condo A
One Oasis Davao Condo B
One Oasis Davao Condo C
One Oasis Davao Condo D
One Oasis Davao Condotel A
One Oasis Davao Condotel B
One Oasis Davao Condotel C
Magallanes Residences Condo Building 1
Magallanes Residences Condo Building 2
Magallanes Residences Condo Building 3
That's 11 Condominium Buildings - confirmed, preselling, with blueprints, and with alotted budgets for the construction already. - no dreams, no hallucinations, and no "i think, i guess, and probably!"

This is nice kuya darry! But sad to say kuya Darry, news can be easily published and fabricated. What's good with this news though is that it was announced independently by Ayala Land and Anflocor first before Mayor Duterte confirmed it. And Ayala Land even disclosed it to its stakeholders through PSE (Philippine Stock Exchange) months before our local officials and local media started discussing about it ;)

There is nothing more credible than hearing the confirmation from the investor itself. Even local officials can be exaggerated at times, you know. :)

Exactly! Even Councilor Pete when he first announced that Ayala will build its first mall in Mindanao here in Davao, di ako naniwala because even local officials nga could get the wrong information. Pero nung nag start ang Ayala makipag meet sa amin, saka pa lang ako naniwala kasi investor na mismo yung nagsabi eh.

I do not recall having ever mentioned the name of your city in any of my previous posts. Thus, that you interpret it in a manner that appears to be disadvantageous to your cause is something that is beyond my control. But the fact still stands that my posts were never directed towards a single object.
The motive to "downgrade" is a state of mind which can only be proved by unequivocally overt acts. Nevertheless, my posts would not sufficiently support your accusation for lack of material evidence that the same are directed towards your city.

Philippine EagleDavao City — Stuart Arnett, a Canadian wildlife artist, has included the Philippine Eagle among his masterpieces in an effort to help save this great yet critically endangered species. Arnett, who is a signature member of the international group Artists for Conservation, partnered with the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) to help raise awareness and support for the survival of the country’s national heritage.
Arnett’s partnership with the PEF stemmed from reading the February 2008 issue of National Geographic Magazine where he learned about the plight of the Philippine Eagle. “One of my goals as a wildlife artist and a member of Artists for Conservation is to assist organizations such as the PEF through partnerships by raising funds through the sale of my artworks,” Arnett pointed. He has pledged to donate 40% of his sales to the PEF.
His works are on canvas giclees which are printed on a premium acid-free cotton canvas, sealed with a non-yellowing protective varnish to prolong print life and enhanced with high quality substrates which make the artworks water resistant.
Arnett’s passion for wildlife and interest for maps led Arnett to create a new form of art he dubbed as “Artistic Cartography,” where he brings the species of wildlife and its habitat together in a single piece of art. Arnett plans to complete an image of the Philippine Eagle on a map of the Philippines to help exemplify the fact that the eagle’s environment is also endangered as the bird itself is in danger of extinction.
“It’s very noble and very heartwarming to come across people who are willing to put their talents to help a critically endangered species,” Dennis I. Salvador, executive director of the PEF, said. The PEF believes that the conservation of the Philippine Eagle contributes to sustainable development and improves the quality of human life by maintaining biological diversity and environmental health.
Arnett’s work will be showcased on the 10th Philippine Eagle Week on June 4-10 at the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City. Limited edition prints are sold at $240, while the original print is priced at US$1115, with 40% donated to the PEF.

davaob4now May 15th, 2008, 12:52 PM I do not recall having ever mentioned the name of your city in any of my previous posts. Thus, that you interpret it in a manner that appears to be disadvantageous to your cause is something that is beyond my control. But the fact still stands that my posts were never directed towards a single object.

davaob4now May 15th, 2008, 01:00 PM yup...some posts here are meant to downgrade other Mindanao cities especially Cagayan de Oro. If you post some news or articles on Davao's progress, just stick to your story and stop adding insults trying to make fun of other posts in other threads especially in Cagayan de Oro threads... I believe you're a lawyer and you should know better. Some Davao forumers which includes you always make comments at the end of each post which in fact does not do well with us. PM mo na lang.

Davao Mall project Phase 1 (to be completed 4Q 2010)
Davao Mall project Phase 2 (to be completed 3Q 2011)
Take note na "Davao Mall" pa ang nakalagay so wala pa pong pangalan ang Ayala Mall sa Davao. :)

junax May 15th, 2008, 02:58 PM ^ Magiging kasinlaki or mas malaki pa siya kesa Ayala Center Cebu.
i don't think so kasi as far as i know parang 120 GFA ang ayala center cebu before the expansion, with the expansion lumaki pa. kaya lang nung 40,000 pa lang ok na ako, tapos naging 60,000 last presentation ng ayala, now naging 90,000 kitang kita ang bargaining ng mga floirendos at ayala reps hahaha.
with that size for sure magiging giant na ang ayala both in size and class.
good news.

yup! hindi masyado clear sa presentation. pero kung babasahin mo kasi GFA on davao mall maybe built in sa mall ang BPO buildings. but the BPO buildings will start this June while sa presentation year end ang nakalagay.
hmmm. makes my excitement more intense. :)

This summer should be as good a time as any for Filipinos to discover the paradise that is their country—more than 7,000 glittering emerald islands in deep blue, crystal-clear waters teeming with a wide variety of marine life. For those who may have forgotten, here’s a quick list:
Northern Luzon: Pangasinan’s Hundred Islands, where one can rent an island for a day and swim, fish or simply relax; Baguio that, despite the pollution, remains a cool place to stay in during summer; Sagada with its fog-shrouded mountain range, limestone cliffs, forests, subterranean caves; and the 2,000-year-old Banaue rice terraces, a Unesco World Heritage Site, the eighth wonder of the world.
Southern Luzon: Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro, a marine reserve and beach resort, endowed with coves, fine sandy beaches and shallow coral reefs for snorkeling; Pagsanjan Rapids and Falls, a series of 14 rapids punctuated by mini waterfalls; Mt. Banahaw, a mystical mountain and a popular destination for people who like to enjoy its cool weather, bathe in its hot springs or simply admire nature’s beauty; Puerto Azul, a beach resort that offers the tourist a breathtaking sight with its elegance and natural beauty; and Donsol, Sorsogon with its human-friendly “butanding” [whale sharks].
Palawan, the country’s natural last frontier, is sanctuary to a big variety of exotic flora and fauna that are found nowhere else. It is home to Tubbataha Reef, the only national marine park on the World Heritage List, whose grandeur is comparable to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia. Other attractions of Palawan are St. Paul’s National Park that has an underground river, El Nido with its awe-inspiring seascape and limestone cliffs, and Calauit Island, home of Philippine and African wildlife.
The jewel of Palawan is stunningly beautiful Amanpulo [“peaceful island”], the resort of the rich and famous. A private island, Amanpulo is blessed with powder white beaches, clear turquoise-azure-indigo seas, cerulean skies and a many-colored coral reef only 300 meters from the shore.
The Visayas: Mactan Island in Cebu City has the largest concentration of beach resorts in the province. Panglao, Bohol, with its gentle coves and white-sand beaches, can be a worthy competitor to Boracay. Around Balicasag Island in Panglao there is a wealth of underwater splendor that makes it a favorite of divers. Among the major attractions of Bohol are the 1,268 Chocolate Hills, which turn chocolate-brown toward the end of summer. The crown jewel of the Visayas is Boracay with its powder white sand that is as fine as confectioners’ sugar, its crystal-clear waters and spectacular sunsets.
Mindanao: The best known tourist destinations in Mindanao are Davao City, with its dazzling ethnic, cultural, linguistic and environmental diversity, and exotic Zamboanga City, the melting pot of the South. Less well known but no less exciting is Camiguin which has more volcanoes per square kilometer than any other island on earth. It has white-sand beaches and spring resorts. Siargao Island in Surigao del Norte province has now become an international surfing mecca

What caught my attention is the gla of ACC's 2007 expansion. 5,800 sqm lang pala yun...Not bad....Im now imagining Robinson's Davao. 8000 sqm for retail and 5000 sqm for bpo/call center. D naman pala ganun kaliit especially if it would be designed like the 2007 expansion ng ACC. Well its not that big compared to other regional malls but if it would house good brands like the ACC 2007 building expansion - then not bad at all. :okay:

Davao City to be a model in Asia – UNICEF
By Rose B. Palacio
Davao City (16 May) -- The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) envisions Davao City as a model in Asian region for the "Salt Iodization Project", a project of Kiwanis Club of Davao City in coordination with UNICEF with Davao as its major beneficiary.
UNICEF representative Liza Saldanha told the Philippine Information Agency in an interview that Kiwanis Club of Davao City, in collaboration with UNICEF has committed to distribute about 8,000 packs (1/4 kilo per pack) of iodized salt for the "would-be" mothers of Davao.
Throughout the world, only Davao City has been chosen as its beneficiary as the city has been a model in the Philippines in the implementation of government's salt iodization law.
Spearheaded by Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, the City was the first local government unit (LGU) to successfully enforce salt iodization law and became a model city in program implementation throughout the country.
Thousand packs of iodized salt was initially turned-over last week led by the Kiwanis Club of Davao City represented by Boy Rallos and Eleonor Madiclum – both from Kiwanis Club and Ms. Saldanha of UNICEF to the City Health Office represented by CHO Dr. Josephine Villafuerte, City nutrition chief Venus Millana and the Department of Health represented by Dr. Margaret Sabay.
Pre-pregnancy package composed of iodized salt and other vitamins will be distributed to all districts of Davao City. In turn, these packages will be distributed for free to would-be couples and those attending the family planning seminars, one of the requirements imposed before getting married.
On the other hand, Ms. Madiclum, club secretary of Kiwanis said their organization has been supporting Mayor Duterte's effort in the promotion of proper nutrition; in addressing malnutrition in the city; and the full implementation of Food Fortification in the City where it was Mayor Duterte who designated Kiwanis Club to be his co-chair in the Task Force on Food Fortification which he created under Executive Order 19.
The Task Force on Food Fortification was signed November 7, 2007 by the Mayor and is being chaired by him.

balang araw mag kakaroon din nyan ang ibang cities, probably metro manila or cebu, kasi kailangan talaga ito ng big cities. kita mo naman mga news sa manila, minsan isang oras nakahandusay ang mga naaaksidente walang rescue darating. here in davao, magwawala ang mga tao kung walang 911 na darating in 10 minutes kahit simple banggaan na gasgas lang tawag agad 911.

A New Driving Range in Town
By Imee Garcia
Sunstar Davao
THERE'S new driving range in town. It is called Davao Jo Yang Dream Golf Range. I have been there twice (at night) and I absolutely love it! I spoke to the owner, Mr. Charlie Kim, and he has big plans for the place. Among them is putting up massage and spa facilities in the future.
So what do I find special about this new driving range? -- the "motorless golf ball dispenser." Unlike in the other driving range nearby, we are dependent on hiring a tee girl. Either that or we break our backs by bending too much for putting a golf ball on a tee every time we hit. With the motorless golf ball dispenser, there is no need for a tee girl. You simply step on the pedal or press the pedal with your club head of choice and it automatically brings a golf ball to the tee. How very convenient and FAST!
The place is very clean and the toilets -- very clean and well lit. The ladies toilet needs a mirror though. Mr. Kim, please put a mirror inside the toilet area because women like to freshen up after practice so that we can look pretty again. The whole area is cemented. No need to clean your shoes and golf clubs after practice.
At the mound, you step on rubber, not soil, so you will not slide. There is a piece of carpet with a tee -- and if you prefer a higher tee, just ask the staff to change it for you. If you don't like to use a tee, use your club head to drop the ball to the carpet and hit it from there.
Another great feature that I like about the place is that it has a rotating wall fan on every stall. How very nice! The air from the fan also reaches the bench so your companions will not feel very hot while watching you practice.
About the lights at night, the area where the people are -- it is very well lit. They make use of so many fluorescent lights. They also have bug killers scattered around the area, so less mosquitoes to worry about.
About the lights on the field, I must say that the brightness is not enough, but then again, at the other driving range nearby, in the recent months, I noticed that they do not turn on all the spotlights anymore. So it is also not bright enough at the other place, compared to when it first opened. If you ask me, this new place has decent lights, enough for you to see if your ball went straight and long.
The rates: P60 per bucket plus an additional one-time service fee of P20. (2 buckets -- P120 plus 20 = P 140/4 buckets-P240 plus 20 = P260). You spend almost the same at the other range because even though the price of a bucket is cheaper, you still have to pay your tee girl plus give extra tip.
There are times when they run out of golf balls. When this happens, everyone is asked to rest for 10 minutes while the staff goes to the field and picks up the balls. This is not a problem. Besides, you need to rest from time to time anyway.
Where is this? It is located right beside South Point School, Datu Loho-F Torres Extension, Maa, Davao City. If you are coming from NCCC Matina, turn on Maa road and then turn right at the Caltex Station-this road leads to South Point School on the left side as well as the Jo Yang Dream Golf Range. This road is the same road that you use to avoid traffic at the downtown area and it eventually brings you to a bridge and then to Marfori Subdivision. At the right corner of the school, there is a sign, so you can't miss it.
The driving range opens DAILY from 6.30am to 9.30pm or later. There are 25 stalls. Drinks are served, no food yet. For more information, call 3021155. Happy golfing!

We can't tell from that info @dinabaw. Naa pa ba ang Pile driver sa site?

It seems that Ayala has been fickle minded about its plans. Mukhang possibleng mababago pa din ang height ng BPO buildings kung ganon. What do you think kuya?

:okay: yeah may chance na magbago kuya...but if they would stick to its original plan - the 5 storey twin bpo buildings, then ayos lang kuya. Ayala IT Buildings are the best in the country (afaik) in terms of design, locators, and functionality. :okay:

growth to local, out-of-town
shoppers, new concepts
Local and out-of-town customers as well as new concepts have driven SM City Davao to the top five provincial malls in terms of performance growth, mall manager Debby Go said.
Housing at least five coffee shops, the mall currently has 279 tenants, 15 percent of which are locally-owned and the rest are franchise holders from Manila, Go said.
She said tenants from outside Davao City usually ask about the mall’s performance before deci-ding to open up stores inside the mall.
The management is constantly upgrading its tenancy policies to remain accessible to the tenants.
The management wants to make its market stronger by coming up with concepts which are non-existent with other malls, including family-oriented concepts, Go said.
Some of the new concepts of the mall are the use of biodegradable grocery bags and waterless urinals, more sales events, and the upcoming P1million raffle for SM Advantage Card users. Judy Quiros

Published : 2008-05-14
DAVAO City’s finest Jujitsu Fighters from the Mindanao Mixed Martial Arts Association, which landed in the 2nd overall spot of the recently held 2008 Pan Asian Jujitsu and Grappling International Championships are now affiliated with the National Kamphius Fabrisio Brazilian Jujitsu Team in Manila under International Brazilian Jujitsu Coach Stephen John Kamphius of Australia.
The team decided to push for their affiliation with the internationally acclaimed Brazilian Jujitsu Association to further develop their skills in the martial art.
Team Davao of Mars and Marco Cenojas, Julius Macasaet and Hamir Achacoso displayed a lot of heart despite the size and height advantage of their competitors that eventually led them to win two golds, one silver and seven bronze medals.
In line with their affiliation, the team will now be called the Davao Kamphius Fabrisio Jujitsu Team and in the coming months, Coach Stephen John Fabrisio might be visiting the city for a series of demonstrations and seminars to further promote the sport here in the city.
“Our fighters really showed a lot of heart like former Asian Games Judo Gold Medalist Paolo Tancontian, Thirdy Escovilla, Juanito Estimada, Julius Macasaet, Ace Larida, Hamir Achacoso, Mars and me included. The other fighters from Guam and Thailand were bigger but we tried our very best and showed them that we can face up to the challenge,” Marco Cenojas said.
On the other hand, this coming May 26 and 27, the Mindanao Mixed Martial Arts Association will be staging the 1st Councilor Paolo Duterte Grappling Championships at the SM City Davao which will have age categories for children, juniors and the seniors class

N. Sulawesi traders exploring tourism, farm, fisheries deals
DAVAO CITY — Members of the North Sulawesi, Indonesia business sector are exploring the possibility of joint ventures with counterparts in the Davao and Central Mindanao regions on tourism, agriculture and fisheries.
Ms. Shelley Sondakh, executive secretary of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area Secretariat, said a 16-member team from the Indonesian province is in the city for this purpose.
"We are taking advantage of the proximity [of the two areas to each other]," said Ms. Sondakh during a break in a meeting held at the office of Indonesian Consul General Lalu Malik Partawana.
Ms. Sondakh, who led the delegation which arrived last weekend, said that while both areas produce copra, "we can complete each other," particularly on technologies to boost production. She said Indonesian copra producers can "come and learn" on how to increase productivity and come up with new products, while those from Mindanao can look at other products that Indonesia produces out of its coconut industry.
She said this is possible considering that the two areas are very close and easy to reach, although there are no regular flights between Manado and Davao City since Merpati Airlines now flies the route on a chartered basis.
Yesterday, the group left for General Santos City to discuss cooperation on tuna fishing. Early this year, the two countries started discussions on fishery disputes.
General Santos’ fishing firms had com-plained about maltreatment of fishermen arrested in Indonesian waters and the seizure of fishing vessels found intruding into the Indonesian economic zone.
Ms. Sondakh also said that tour opera-tors are also considering selling their host cities in one package. — C. Q. Francisco
