from what i have heard, Silk air will not compete with cebupac. Silk will not lower their fares, they will just reduce their flights to 5 times weekly from the current 7 times weekly.

Direk Sherad to do new Cinema One movie
DAVAOENO Sherad Anthony Sanchez is set to make his new film, still courtesy of Cinema One.
Continuing his triumph in the independent and digital film circuit after the success of Huling Balyan ng Buhi in Cinema One Originals 2006, Sherad has a new entry in this year's competition.
ABS-CBN's Cinema One Originals has approved to finance Sherad's Imburnal with a P1 million grant. It will compete against six other entries from more than a hundred of submitted scripts.
Based on Cinema One's publicity, Imburnal is a childhood drama set in the slums of San Antonio, Davao, where manhood and society are explored and become interspersed.
However, it is not yet certain if the 23-year-old Sherad would make the movie in Davao.
Sherad's Balyan was shot in Davao in 2006, becoming the first full-lenght movie to be made in Davao region.
Balyan, which starred TIMES' lifestyle writer Marilyn Roque, made waves in film festivals here and in abroad.
Balyan was the biggest winner in Cinema One Originals 2006, taking home the trophies for best picture, best screenplay, best director for Sherad, and special jury citation for best ensemble acting.
The movie also won the best picture and best director -- tied with Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo and Kubrador -- in the Gawad Tanglaw, a group of critics, scholars, historians and humanities professors.
In Gaward Urian 2006, the movie was nominated for best picture, best direction, best screenplay, best musical scoring, best production design, and best cinematography (TIMES' contributing photographer Mark Paul Limbaga was among the cinematographers).
It also bagged the One Future Prize award at the Munich Film Festival in Germany and the First Film Prize Award in the Marseille Documentary Film Festival in France.

Standards of hotel classification
Some countries have an official body with standard criteria for classifying hotels, but in many regions there are none. There have been attempts at unifying the classification system so that it becomes an internationally recognized and reliable standard but large differences exist in the quality of the accommodations within one category of hotel. Competitive marketing of hotel services to foreign customers and tourist professionals have emerged as driving forces for instituting a Standardization of local and national hotel classification system.
One Star, Two Star, and Three Star hotels are never claimed and carry a pejorative.
Four Star Hotels
xxxx
Five Star Hotels
xxxxxx
Six Star Hotels
Some members of the hospitality industry have claimed a six star rating for their operation. The Crown Macau casino, on Taipa Island; St. Regis Shanghai Hotel in China; Setai on Miami's South Beach; The Palazzo Versace on the Gold Coast in Australia.
Seven Star HotelsAlthough the Burj Al Arab characterizes itself as the world's only "7-Star Hotel", several "7-Star" hotels are under construction.
The Morgan Plaza, Beijing (China)
The Flower of the East, Kish (Iran)
The Centaurus Complex, Islamabad (Pakistan)
The Pentominium, Manila (Philippines)
The Royalties Castle, for Davao City (Philippines)
Establishing a Universal Hotel Rating System
OHICC believes that setting up an international hotel star classification scheme is an impossible task. Quantitative criteria (room size, construction standards, language proficiency) vary to much from country to country. Qualitative criteria remain highly subjective. Many on-line travel agencies have establish their own rating systems, providing enhanced, current evaluations.
That said, One Star, Two Star, and Three Star hotels should hold some merit but it would be near impossible to implement because of marketing slate and the subjective nature of the qualitative data. However, for the standardization higher ratings of Four Star, and Five Star is a feasible and the global acceptance of the star rating system should not be discounted.
We believe once a strict bar is raised for Four Star rating, and that all Five Star claims be validated then the rating standards will prove benefitial for all participants.

OHICC offical position on Seven Star Hotels and Six Star Hotels is that is a marketing gimic. For them to have merit they must adhere to exclusivity to a rare collection of excellent hotels. The OHICC steering commitee has approved the use of 7-star & 6-star ratings under these rules:

John Ray Batucan: From Toril to Vietnam
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
Sunstar Davao
WHO would ever think that this 11-year-old from Barangay Daliao, Toril, Davao City will represent the country to the Asean Age-Group Chess Championships in Danang, Vietnam from June 8 to 19.
John Ray Batucan, RR to his family and friends, is set to make his international debut in the Vietnam Fide (World Chess Federation)-rated tournament that is expected to gather the best youth woodpushers in Southeast Asia.
He gained a slot for the Vietnam joust after emerging under-12 boys division champion in the 2008 Age-Group Chess Championship held at the Bulwagan Kaban ng Hiyas, Mandaluyong City, Metro Manila on April 1 to 6, 2008.
But RR's dream to compete abroad might be foiled due to funding problems.
"Hapi ko nga naka-champion ug magdula sa Vietnam pero murag dili ko madayon kay wala may money akong papa (I'm happy to become champion and get to play in Vietnam but I might not make it because we have no money to spend for my trip)," he said in a text message to Sun.Star Davao Saturday.
RR is the youngest son of Neptali Batucan Jr., a taxi driver, and Marilyn Belleza Batucan, a teacher.
With his Vietnam stint still uncertain, let me tell you why this young ace from Toril deserves to play in the Southeast Asia age-group chess spectacle.
He started pushing chess pieces at the age of eight.
"My father motivated me to play chess. He encouraged me then and he continues to inspire me to be the best that I can be in this sport"" he said.
An incoming Grade 5 student at the Don Juan dela Cruz Central Elementary School, this boy wonder first competed in the Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) Day Chess Tournament on December 16 and 17, 2005 in Barangay Matina, 74-A where he bagged the runner-up honors in the kiddies under-16 event.
The next day, December 18, he redeemed himself by winning his first championship trophy during the Youth Day Chess Tournament under-18 event in Barangay Daliao, Toril.
He recalled, "I was so happy that time. I gained self-confidence with that victory."
The year 2006 was even more colorful for RR. He triumphed anew as junior under-18 champion in the Araw ng Barangay Daliao Chess Tournament on Valentine's Day.
He then clinched back-to-back titles in the San Vicente Fiesta Celebration Chess Tournament kiddies under-14 held April 6 and 7 in Toril and in the first leg of the BKCC-NCFP Kiddies Chess Tournament kiddies under-14 on April 8 at the Blue Knight Chess Club along Bonifacio St.
BKCC club director Ronnie Tabudlong shared, "I first met John Ray in July 2005. His father introduced me to him in a visit at my club. His father wanted him to be a member of my chess club. Right there and then, John Ray registered for the first BKCC tournament."
He said RR is a silent type of person and a humble player. He added, "I've been observing his games and I could see that he will have a bright future in chess because of his natural talent and his determination to win."
Tabudlong said RR pays attention to his mistakes and is very much eager to learn.
"I decided to give him a lot of chess playing software program compact disks for his personal training at home. His mother bought him a desktop computer for his training. His parents are very supportive of him," he said.
Still very much a child, RR tested the waters in the men's world. He competed in the class B open event of the Araw ng Barangay Bago Gallera in Talomo on April 22 and 23. He landed at the third spot among dozens of adult players. He also placed third in the kiddies under-14 BKCC-Pro Kiddies Chess Tournament on Labor Day.
His first exposure into the Big City was during the 2006 National Age-Group Chess Championships held at the St. Francis Square, Mandaluyong City on May 21 to 25 where he pocketed the bronze medal in the boys under-10 category.
From there, he saw action in seven more tournaments in 2006 including title victories in the Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Kadayawan Age-Group Chess Tournament in August, Davao City Athletic Association (DCAA) Meet and in the Tagum City Parochial Fiesta in November, Chadric Builders Christmas Open & Kiddies Chess Tournament at the NCCC Mall and SK Tournament in Barangay Matina.
A second runner-up finish in the BKCC under-14 chess competition ushered RR's campaign in 2007.
He also placed third in the kiddies under-14 of the Araw ng Daliao Chess Tournament on February 14 before topping the Engineer Allan Diez Chess Tournament kiddies under-14 on February 27.
He represented Davao City during the Davao Regional Athletic Association (Davraa) Meet on March 21 to 23 in Pantukan, Compostela Valley and won the gold medal in elementary boys board 2. That feat got him a slot to the Palarong Pambansa in Koronadal City, South Cotabato.
At his second stint in the National Age-Group Chess Championships, RR played in the boys under-12 for the first time. He placed ninth.
But he didn't stop from that debacle. He persevered to improve his skill and bounced back with 10 more titles to his name.
He reigned in the BKCC under-14 Tournament, Kabasan Festival 2007 under-14 in the Island Garden City of Samal, 2007 Kiddies Chess Championship dubbed "Battle of Chess Achievers" at the Holy Cross of Davao College, Davao Open Age-Group Chess Championships under -12, RRD Kadayawan 2007 Chess Tournament, BKCC Chess under-16 at the Market Basket in Lanang, DCAA Meet, First Leo Avila Chess Tournament under-16, 2nd Leo Avila Chess Tournament under-16 and Pamaskong Handog ni Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte Chess Tournament.
This year, he copped the boys elementary gold in the Davraa Meet held in the City of Mati, Davao Oriental before flying to Puerto Princesa City last month for the 2008 Palarong Pambansa where his tandem with Austin Jacob Literatus placed fourth in the team event.
He also ruled the Futures Chess Tournament.
And with the looming challenge that awaits him in Vietnam, RR's belief that "There is no glory without sacrifice" will certainly pave the way for him to conquer the odds there.
"Going to Vietnam is my biggest contribution as a Filipino because I'm competing there not for myself but for the country," he said.
As part of his preparations, he said he trains everyday. More so now that it's summer break. But on regular school season, he said, "I train everyday, one hour before I go to bed because I attend classes during the day. During weekends, I spend more time in training."
He dreams to become an International Master (IM) like Bobby Fisher. But his greatest dream as an athlete is to become a super grand master like Filipino child genius Wesley So.
Considering all RR's achievements, he does deserve to play in Vietnam. This rare opportunity is just too good to pass. Any help from kind-hearted souls are most welcome.

davaoeagle May 18th, 2008, 01:51 AM Dureza looms as new press secretary; Canlas gets new posting
By Joyce Pangco Pañares
The Manila Standard Today
PRESIDENT Arroyo is eyeing presidential adviser on the peace process Jesus Dureza as the next press secretary, one of the few remaining appointments before the ongoing Cabinet revamp ends.
A high-ranking Palace source said Dureza, a former journalist, had emerged as the top choice in the shortlist submitted by Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye.
“He will just wind up his work in the peace process; then he will assume the post,” the official said.
Bunye would neither confirm nor deny Dureza’s forthcoming appointment, but said his replacement was male and an insider with a Cabinet rank.
“I will make the announcement on May 18, and I will also announce his replacement,” the outgoing spokesman said in an interview during the Newsstand Forum held at the Ambassador Hotel in Manila.
“He will assume the post of press secretary on June 16, while I will remain as presidential spokesman and interim presidential adviser on political affairs until July 3,” Bunye added.
Bunye is set to move to the Monetary Board, the central bank’s policy-making body, on July 3 and will have a fixed-term of six years or until July 2014.
Dureza, who also heads the Mindanao Economic Development Council, once served as the official spokesman of former President Fidel Ramos.
The former congressman also previously served as president of the Davao Press Club and editor of The Mindanao Times.
He graduated cum laude from the Ateneo de Davao University and placed 10th in the 1973 Bar examinations.
Bunye was not sure whether his replacement as press secretary would also serve as presidential spokesman, but said the ongoing revamp was set to end once the vacancies were filled up.
“The President explained that when she said there will be a revamp, she was referring to me and Ric [Saludo]. My understanding is that the candidates who lost in the 2007 elections will no longer be appointed,” Bunye said.
Dureza said “nothing is final” until he saw his appointment papers.
“That is the sole prerogative of the President and we cannot preempt her. I have not been informed of anything yet,” he said in a telephone interview.
Outgoing Cabinet Secretary Ricardo Saludo has been appointed head of the Commission on Human Rights to replace Karina David, who retired.
Saludo will be replaced by former presidential adviser on new government centers Silvestre Bello III.
Bello aside, the other Cabinet officials affected by the revamp were Robert Dean Barbers, who was replaced by Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano as head of the Philippine Tourism Authority in a concurrent capacity, and Interior Secretary Ronaldo Puno, who was relieved of his other post as presidential adviser on political affairs.
Election lawyer Leila de Lima, who represented opposition candidates during the May polls last year, was also appointed head of the Commission on Human Rights.
President Arroyo said a civilian post was also awaiting retired military chief Gen. Hermogenes Esperon Jr., who was replaced by Lt. Gen. Alexander Yano.
Also yesterday, the President appointed former Socio-economic Planning Secretary Dante Canlas as the contact person for the country’s efforts to obtain a grant under the five-year compact program of the United States Millennium Challenge Corp., which has been giving an average of $344 million to eligible countries.
Mrs. Arroyo met with MCC vice president for compact development John Hewko at the Palace yesterday, where she reiterated the government’s commitment to come up with a concrete proposal for the large-scale financing.
Finance Secretary Margarito Teves said Canlas’ appointment would ensure that the government’s proposal would be approved by the MCC, a foreign-assistance program established by the US to help reduce poverty through sustainable growth in some of the poorest countries in the world.
“The early appointment of a point-of-contact for the Philippines demonstrates the government’s commitment to complete promptly its compact proposal. We are hopeful that the MCC will recognize our efforts to upgrade to compact status where we can avail of a higher grant,” Teves said in a statement.
Canlas, an economics professor at the University of the Philippines, previously served as executive director of the Asian Development Bank and has done consultancy work with the World Bank, the International Labor Organization, and the United States Agency for International Development.
Hewko congratulated the country for being selected as eligible for the five-year compact program.
“This has been a very productive trip. We have had excellent meetings with civil society groups, the private sector, and government officials including President Arroyo,” he said. With Monica Santiago

Dureza is new Press Secretary; Esperon takes over as Peace Process chief
Carolyn O. Arguillas / MindaNews
Sunday, 18 May 2008 19:48
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/18 May) – Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (PAPP) Jesus Dureza is moving to Malacanang as Press Secretary effective June 16, with newly-retired Armed Forces chief of staff, Gen. Hermogenes Esperon, taking over as PAPP.
The appointments and the appointees’ acceptance, were announced today in the column “View from the Palace” by outgoing Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye.
Bunye quoted Dureza, who is presently in Libya, as having said in his text message to President Arroyo: “I humbly accept this new task and I thank the President for the honor and privilege of serving her and the country as press secretary. I consider this as a progression of my work and commitment for peace and development, this time perhaps with a bigger, wider platform. I will give it my best shot. I hope I can fit in the big shoes Sec. Toting Bunye is leaving behind with distinction.”
Esperon, who will cut short his vacation, according to Bunye, has also accepted his new designation. Bunye quoted Esperon as saying, "I am awed, humbled by the big task. But the challenge is by itself the incentive and the inspiration. I'm ready, Sir."
To reporters, Esperon sent this text message: “I thank PGMA (President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo”) for the continuing trust and confidence. Am honored with the new position and for the opportunity to serve the country. I will do my best to be equal to the great task. God willing.”
Mohagher Iqbal, chair of the peace panel of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) whose peace talks with the Philippine government has remained stalled, declined to comment on the changes. “That is internal to the GRP (Government of the Republic of the Philippines).
Datu Michael Mastura, member of the MILF peace panel, said, “the initial revamp is not after all an earthshaking decision in GMA’s Cabinet. The same pinballs in the bowling alley. It’s of momentous choice in proportion to the national crisis she is facing.”
Lawyer Mary Ann Arnado, secretary-general of the Mindanao Peoples’ Caucus (MPC) said, “the Mindanao conflict is clearly a political problem, not a military one. Bringing the generals to the peace talks I hope will not simply extend the war from the battleground to the negotiating table.”
Guiamel Alim, executive director of the Consortium of Bangsamoro Civil Society, asked: “Can Esperon give better advice to PGMA (President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo than Jess (Dureza) re peace process? Whoever is there is immaterial. It is only PGMA’s political (will) that counts.”
Father Roberto Layson hopes that as a Mindanawon and as the new Press Secretary, Dureza “will bring to the doorsteps of Malacanang the issues of many Mindanawons, especially the Moro and Lumad minorities.”
”As for Esperon, I know that he was the one who drafted the ground rules for the ground commanders regarding the directive of GMA on the primacy of the peace process with the MILF. I hope he will continue to promote it as the new OPAPP Secretary.”
Lawyer Zen Malang said, “after GMA makes public her latest position on the peace process at Camp Aguinaldo, now she appoints an ex chief of staff as peace process ‘adviser.’ There’s a negative symbolism there that can’t be missed, particularly now that the peace process is in shambles.”
Abhoud Syed Lingga, Executive Director of the Institute of Bangsamoro Studies (IBS) in Cotabato City said Esperon’s assignment “might entrench the national security framework in government’s approach to the peace process, pushing the human security framework to the sideline. The humane approach that government has to adopt to address self-determination issue is human security.”
Former Bayan Muna Rep. Joel Virador said, “there is still no peace with Esperon as Peace Adviser. He is not fit for the job since his expertise is to launch war with those branded by the government as enemies of the state.”
On Dureza, Virador said, “he will be having difficulty defending an unpopular president. He cannot hide the crises his boss is facing now.”
Esperon’s appointment, said Jeppie Ramada, BAYAN Southern Mindanao secretary general, “only shows two points. First, that the government has no plan in forging a peace process with any revolutionary movement because what it has installed is not a peace negotiator but an all out war think tank. Second is that the government accommodates its allies even if it is bereft of any capability for the position offered to them.”
Lawyer Carlos Isagani Zarate, secretary-general of the Union of Peoples’ Lawyers in Mindanao (UPLM) said Esperon’s appointment “shows the low regard of the GMA government to truly address the peace issue.”
”It only strengthened the hawkish thrust of the government. It is like letting the big, bad wolf inside the house of the three little pigs!” Zarate said.
Former Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Teresita Quintos-Deles, told MindaNews, “obviously, GMA does not want to save an already badly troubled peace process.”
“Considering Esperon’s last years in military service, I’m afraid the path ahead will be marred with even more fighting, divisions, deception, distrust, and deadly political games,” Deles said.
Deles took over the Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process from retired general Eduardo Ermita. Dureza succeeded as PAPP after Deles’ resignation, along with other Cabinet members, following the “Hello Garci” scandal in July 2005, in what is now referred to as “Hyatt 10.” (Carolyn O. Church feels economic pinch, too
Monday, May 19, 2008
Even the Catholic Church is feeling the economic pinch with the significant drop in collections from the faithful attending Mass, a ranking prelate said.
In a report posted on the website of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP), Davao Auxiliary
Bishop George Rimando said the Catholic Church is not even exempted from experiencing such economic crisis as seen from the drop in collections from parishes.
Rimando said the financial crisis is everywhere, citing his San Pedro Cathedral parish where despite the increase of faithful attending the Mass, the collections have not increased. (Gaba ninyo, kay ginanegosyo ninyo ang cathedral :bash: kalimot siguro ning mga pari nga sila ang cause sa population explosion i.e. sa atong sociopolitical and economic crisis.... )
“We can see now that some of our parishes in the archdiocese are encountering financial instability brought by the crisis that we are experiencing in our country,” Rimando said.
He said that even the pastoral office of the archdiocese has no budget for its operations.
The pastoral office takes charge of the various pastoral agencies in the Archdiocese of Davao, he said.
Rimando said some pastoral agencies find it difficult to make ends meet due to scarce funds to finance their operations.
“We do not deny the fact that we are really in crisis,” he said. – Sandy Araneta

dinabaw May 19th, 2008, 03:32 AM Hedcor extends compensation
to Sibulan landowners
Hedcor Sibulan, Inc. (HSI) recently distributed checks to landowners in Barangay Sibulan, Davao del Sur as compensation to those affected by the ongoing construction of the company’s 42.5-megawatt Hydropower Project.
A total of P2.1 million was recompensed to 38 of the 170 residents whose crops and property were affected during the construction of the hydropower facilities.
“We would like to thank Hedcor for honoring their commitments and for being such a big help in our community,” said Sibulan Barangay Captain Lydia Ang during the turnover.
To date, the company has paid a total P31.3 million since the project construction started in June of 2007. On top of this, P8.2 million has also been paid for land rental in various communities where the 26 megawatt Plant A and 16.5 megawatt Plant B of the Sibulan Hydropower Project (SHP) are being put up. Land rental payments are regularly made to landowners every six months.
Upon its completion on August 2009, the SHP will generate a total of 212 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy which will be supplied to Davao to avert an impending power crisis in the area.
The project is also Davao’s contribution in the fight against global warming as the clean energy from the plants will also prevent the release of more than 100,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (tCO2e) in the atmosphere.

Dureza, Esperon get new
portfolios–Sec. Bunye
By Angelo S. Samonte, Reporter
President Gloria Arroyo has named former Armed Forces chief Hermogenes Esperon Jr. as presidential adviser on the peace process and Jesus Dureza as the next Press secretary.
Dureza will replace Ignacio Bunye on June 16, when he joins Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas’ Monetary Board. Dureza used to be the President’s adviser on the peace process.
Bunye announced the latest Cabinet changes in his regular column, “View from the Palace.”
He said Dureza had asked President Arroyo for time to wind down his affairs, as he was still in Libya on the invitation of Col. Muammar Qaddafi’s son, Sail Al Islam, who has been working for an enhanced implementation of the 1996 Peace Agreement between the Philippine government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF).
Dureza wrote to Bunye accepting the new appointment.
“I consider this as a progression of my work and commitment for peace and development, this time perhaps with a bigger, wider platform,” Bunye quoted from Dureza’s letter. “I will give it my best shot. I hope I can fit in the big shoes Secretary Toting Bunye is leaving behind with distinction.”
Esperon, who retired from military service last week, also accepted the post “without batting an eyelash,” Bunye said.
He added that the revamp is complete, but more changes involving non-Cabinet posts will be made.
Earlier, President Arroyo named former Justice secretary and peace negotiator Silvestre Bello 3rd as Cabinet secretary, replacing Ricardo Saludo, who was appointed Civil Service Commission chairman.
Esperon pleased
“It’s a job that I could put my heart into,” Esperon said, referring to his new job. He admitted knowing about his appointment on May 14, saying he was honored with the President’s decision.
“Its a very serious job,” Esperon said. “Secretary [Eduardo] Ermita is very familiar with [the] peace process, but he still has to review many documents when he was appointed as presidential adviser for the peace process.” Like Esperon, Ermita came from the military.
Esperon said he favors resuming talks with the National Democratic Front. “Of course pursuing peace is always a good step . . . I’m sure it is to the interest of the nation, of our soldiers, of our countrymen to have peace negotiations.”

SM Investments profit up 13% at P3.8B (http://business.inquirer.net/money/topstories/view/20080513-136379/SM-Investments-profit-up-13-at-P38B)
Philippine Daily Inquirer

SM Investments Corp. (SMIC), the publicly listed holding company of mall magnate Henry Sy, reported a 13-percent growth in net income to P3.8 billion in the first quarter from P3.3 billion in the same period last year, driven mainly by retail and mall operations.
In a disclosure to the stock exchange, SMIC said consolidated revenues expanded 14 percent year-on-year to P30.1 billion from P26.5 billion.
Retail revenues from department stores, hypermarkets and supermarkets jumped 19 percent to P25.2 billion while rental revenues from malls rose 13.5 percent to P2.9 billion.
Shopping malls accounted for 34 percent of the company’s net income, and retail merchandising accounted for 30 percent. The rest of the net income came from banking (26 percent) and real-estate operations (10 percent).
“Notwithstanding greater challenges from external factors, SM continued to deliver healthy earnings growth in the first quarter, mainly driven by increased efficiencies, particularly in the retail sector, and the increasing momentum we are experiencing in the property business,” SMIC president Harley Sy said.
Retail merchandising reported a net income of P697 million, up 34 percent from P521 million for the first quarter of 2007.
Last February, the group opened a new SaveMore branch along Taft Avenue in Pasay City.
SaveMore outlets are stand-alone supermarkets located outside SM malls. In 2007, the group inaugurated two department stores, two hypermarkets and two supermarkets, of which one is a SaveMore branch.
SMIC’s retail group now has 88 stores—31 department stores; 31 supermarkets, which include nine SaveMore branches; 11 hypermarkets, and 15 Makro outlets. SM increased its effective ownership in Pilipinas Makro Inc. to 50 percent in October last year.
SM Prime Holdings Inc., SMIC’s mall operator, said its net income rose seven percent to P1.6 billion for the first quarter of 2008.
my take on this is Makro is part of SM group of companies pero dili necessary na porke part na sila sa SM eh buhaton na silang SM :) murag they are keeping the Makro brand separate from the other SM brands (ie Supermalls or savemore) kay lahi ang "concept" aning makro (CMIIW though) so unless we see nga gipang close na ang mga makro para i convert to an SM brand store (supercenter ba karon or savemore) then all makro branches will remain makros siguro

The 'bed and breakfast' experience gets nearer
By Ana Felicia Dulay
FOR most Filipinos yet to travel abroad, the experience of staying in a "bed and breakfast" inn is unheard of. Most can only boast of staying at either a high-rise hotel or a spartan lodge with communal bathrooms.
The dichotomy is disparate where no middle ground exists. Now thanks to Microtel Inn & Suites Davao, there is a new option for travelers.
According to Rose Brillantes-Gabas, Microtel resident manager, the concept of Microtel is that of a no-frills hotel.
"We offer basic amenities that travelers need. Aside from clean rooms, we also offer regular or heavy breakfast, depending on a traveler's choice," she said in a recent interview at her office.
She says that the word "Microtel" is a US brand and the first in Mindanao with Davao City being the pilot area.
"We had our soft opening last September 2007. And since then, we had about 50% occupancy rate. From January to March this year, we had 70% occupancy rate," she said.
Microtel is an international chain of limited services hotels under the Global Hyatt Group. Microtel Davao is a franchise of Damosa Land Inc. owned by Anflo Group.
In the Philippines, the master franchise of Microtel is handled by Jose Maria del Rosario.
Gabas said Microtel buildings follow the style and architecture of all buildings all over the world. There are more than 300 Microtel Inns across the globe and the number continues to grow.
According to Gabas, three more Microtel Inns will open: Cabanatuan in June, Cebu in July and the ongoing project in Palawan. This brings the total number to 10 inns in the country.
Microtel Inn & Suites has 51 rooms, offering double and suite accommodations. The hotel is located at Damosa Gateway Complex along Mamay Road, Lanang, Davao City.
Its facilities and amenities can rival that of an upscale hotel, with its cable TV, IDD and NDD access, electronic key card entry system, speed Internet connections, among others.
Its function room can seat up to 180 to 200 persons, which is great for seminars, forum and conventions.
"Marami din kaming bookings ng corporate accounts. Our function room is convenient for conventions and seminars," she said.
With Gabas at the helm, Microtel Inn & Suites Davao can go no wrong. With her 10 years of experience in the hotel industry and another eight years in an international six-star cruise line, Gabas feels at home with Microtel Davao.
"When I was offered the job as resident manager here, I did not hesitate to say yes. I have considered Davao as my second home already," she said.
"While working my way up the ladder, I remember my mentors would always tell me that part of being a great leader is being able to motivate or inspire loyalty from our team. And the best way to do that is to support and recognize their efforts," she said.
"I also believe that guests are most deserving of our 'personal approach,' nothing less. I always want the guests to feel like they never left their homes and they can be as comfortable as when they stay in Microtel. I ensure that I am mostly visible to guests and if need be, personally attend to their concerns," she added.
Under such able hands, truly, guests at Microtel Inn and Suites need not ask for more.

The Edades and the Consunji-Rivera museum
By Michael Ebro Dakudao Published : 2008-05-18
I don’t think anybody is just one thing.
Take the case of Ms. Aida Rivera Ford
who has made her mark in so many ways: writer, educator, stage actress, singer and astute businesswoman. Naturally, a big part of her is also Davao’s respected Patroness of the Arts. In the recent exhibit opening of the Davao Museum’s A Photo Exhibit of the Inundated Plain (Maguindanao) showcasing Ms. Lourdes Velayo Mastura’s precious collection, Ms. Ford happily announced to the guests the scheduled opening of her two museums — the Edades Museum and the Consunji-Rivera Museum.
“The two newly refurbished museums are at the Edades Memorial Hall within the Ford Academy of the Arts campus along Ladislawa Avenue, Buhangin, Davao City,” Ms. Ford told the guests.
“The Edades Museum commemorates the life and works of the National Artist in Painting (1976), Victorio C. Edades (Dec. 13, 1896-March 7, 1985),” said Ms. Ford.
The youngest of 10 children of Hilario and Cecilia Edades, the young Victorio grew up in Barrio Bolosan in Dagupan, Pangasinan. The gifted boy’s artistry shone at a very early stage during his elementary years. The young Edades also excelled in school debates and writing competitions.
After high school, Edades left for America to study at the University of Washington in Seattle where he took up Architecture and later, earned a Master of Fine Arts in Painting degree. Edades also earned a degree in Architecture from the famous Ecole de Beaux Arts in Paris, France. Edades married the American Jean Garrot who was 12 years his junior. The young couple went back to the Philippines in 1928. The young couple was blessed with an only daughter named Joan.
Inspired by modern European artists like Cezanne, Matisse, Picasso and the Surrealists, Edades painted in the modern manner. What attracted him to the Modernist Movement was its principle to go beyond the idealistic exterior propagated by Impressionism and Realism. Modernism encouraged experimentation in artistic expression and allowed the artist to present reality in a more democratic manner the artist saw it. Modern Art was something quite novel in the Philippines at that time which was used to the then prevailing Fernando Amorsolo style which every artist in Manila was copying.
Edades shocked prewar Filipinos with his one-man-show at the Philippine Columbia Club in Ermita in December, 1928. He mounted his most renowned work, The Builders (now a Cultural Center of the Philippines collection), in which he drew his distorted figures of tough, dirty construction laborers in brush strokes that were agitated and harsh. He utilized muddy earth colors of yellow ochres and raw sienna accented by bold black contours. Edades then lectured, “From the technical point of view, Modern Art is an outgrowth of Classical Art. Modern Art is the interpretation of the Classical concept conditioned by the artist’s new experience with the aid of improved means of aesthetic expression.”
Edades, among the members of the country’s Thirteen Moderns engaged their classical compatriots in heated debates over the nature and function of art. Victorio C. Edades came to be known as the Father of Modern Art in the Philippines. His group included the country’s top artists namely Carlos “Botong” Francisco, Galo Ocampo, Lorenzo, Vicente Manansala, HR Ocampo, Anita Magsaysay-Ho, Cesar Legaspi, Demtrio Diego, Ricarte Parugganan, Jose Pardo, Bonifacio Cristobal and Arsenio Capili.
Edades also helped organize the founding of the University of Sto. Tomas’ Department of Architecture in 1930. He became the Director of the Institution’s College of Architecture and Fine Arts in 1935.
He retired from teaching in the mid-1960’s to devote his remaining years to painting. It was sometime in the 1970’s when he decided to settle in Davao City. In 1980, Edades became the first Director of the Learning Center of the Arts (now the Ford Academy of the Arts), the first college of Fine Arts in Mindanao. Amazingly, Edades’ modern influence still lives on among the young artists produced by this institution.
I was fortunate to experience the opportunity of interviewing the great master in the early 1980’s for the National Historical Institute’s documentation. Professor Edades then narrated his fulfilling life story as a visual artist, architect, husband, father and grandfather. He tried selling me a watercolor portrait of Jean, an old work of his of much sentimental value, but for a princely sum I couldn’t afford from my salary man’s budget. The professor even offered to do my portrait but I still couldn’t afford his talent fee discounted as it was. It was at that time when one of his grandson’s was leaving for the U.S.A. and the grandfather in him wanted to provide monetary gift for a most beloved one. It was much later after the master passed away when Jean Edades told me she sold the painting. Boy, what a price the art collector paid for it. The original price the master was selling the painting to me was such a bargain. I truly regret it until this time for not borrowing money from my parents to buy that precious Edades masterpiece.
On the other hand, the Consunji-Rivera Museum presents valuable materials from the marriage union of Lourdes Samson Consunji and Pablo Sabino Rivera in a welcoming, informative way as guaranteed by the devoted descendants in Davao, Ms. Aida Rivera Ford and Ms. Lydia Rivera Ingle. At the same time, Ms. Rivera Ford and Ms. Rivera Ingle commemorate the 66th Death Anniversary of their most beloved brother, Estanislao Jaime Rivera, an “Ateneo War Hero” who died in the Capas Concentration Camp and whose remains along with his 32 other Atenean compatriots are burried at the Libingan ng Mga Bayani.
The blessing and opening of the Edades Museum and the Consunji-Rivera Museum will be held on May 22 at 4:00 p.m. at the Ford Academy of the Arts Campus, Ladislawa Avenue, Ruhangin. For details, please call 224-2835/227-1096.

Direk Sherad to do new Cinema One movie
Published : 2008-05-18
DAVAOEÑO Sherad Anthony Sanchez is set to make his new film, still courtesy of ABS-CBN’s Cinema One Originals.
Continuing his triumph in the independent and digital film circuit after the success of Huling Balyan ng Buhi in Cinema One Originals 2006, Sherad has a new entry in this year’s competition.
Cinema One Originals has approved to finance Sherad’s Imburnal with a P1 million grant. It will compete against six other entries from more than a hundred of submitted scripts.
Based on Cinema One’s publicity, Imburnal is a childhood drama set in the slums of San Antonio, Davao, where manhood and society are explored and become interspersed.
However, it is not yet certain if the 23-year-old Sherad would make the movie in Davao.
Sherad’s Balyan was shot in Davao in 2006, becoming the first full-lenght movie to be made in Davao region.
Balyan, which starred Times’ lifestyle writer Marilyn Roque, made waves in film festivals here and abroad.
Balyan was the biggest winner in Cinema One Originals 2006, taking home the trophies for best picture, best screenplay, best director for Sherad, and special jury citation for best ensemble acting.
The movie also won the best picture and best director — tied with Kasal, Kasali, Kasalo and Kubrador — in the Gawad Tanglaw, a group of critics, scholars, historians and humanities professors.
In Gaward Urian 2006, the movie was nominated for best picture, best direction, best screenplay, best musical scoring, best production design, and best cinematography (Times’ contributing photographer Mark Paul Limbaga was among the cinematographers).
Balyan also bagged the One Future Prize award at the Munich Film Festival in Germany and the First Film Prize Award in the Marseille Documentary Film Festival in France.

Actually tama ka kasi hindi na-mention kung sino papalit ka Dureza as Mindanao Presidential Adviser. There's no mention of it in the article, unfortunately.

Sasagutin ko lang to before I'd hit the sack...
Our congressmen seem silent from the outset because they don't really figure out (as yet) in land mark proposals and what not. I know that in the congress, one has to say something so as to be recognized. They might not talk a lot, save for Speaker Prospero Nograles (what a huge irony if he does, with his current responsibility!) because the 2 others e.g. Reps Garcia and Ungab are greenhorns in this level of politicking (pun intended).
Let us not forget Rep Luz Ilagan (our very own home grown rep for Gabriela) who is an eloquent speaker herself. She is one whose caliber as an educator and as a salient defendor of women is said to be one that could go down history books of this sector.

and that action speaks louder than words...hindi pa umiinit ang mga chairs nila sa congress...for me lng, they will just speak infront of the congress if there will be something that's commentable...instead of participating in the discussions(sometimes nonsense discussions/debate), lets just hope na they are doing something for the city...they are our future philippine leaders...
