Lena, as far as female expats go. There is a place called Mercy Birth Clinic which is staffed by young American and Canadian ladies. I think the facility is operated by a church based in North America. Some of the ladies run blogs where they write down their thoughts, feelings, triumphs and day-to-day activities.

Thanx Bel1river for the information about Mercy Brith Clinic. It is always good to know other tourists or immigrants for first hand information about issues regarding being a forreinger staying a long time in Davao. Nice of you Jon, is your name Jon? I might use the wrong name? :)

A nice Saturday to you!

DDH to give medical services to Palau

THE Davao Doctors Hospital, the premier hospital in Mindanao, has achieved another breakthrough in its health services when it concluded a deal with the health authorities of the Republic of Palau for DDH to provide the health care and other medical services for this small island state.

DDH Chairman, Dr. Honorio Hilario, said that they have dispatched a team and had a series of meeting with their Palau counterpart initially to assist Palau to upgrade their hospital facilities. They talked later on how patients that cannot be handled by Palau infirmary be handled by Davao Doctors Hospital.

Hilario said that the authority of Palau will be sending patients to Davao Doctors Hospital with the government letter of guarantee. "What they have there is a socialist approach. It's the government that pays for the medication and education of their citizens," Hilario said.

In turn, DDH will send its medical staff to help Palau maintain its 75-bed hospital.

Palau authorities and businessmen touched base with their counterparts in Davao City to look into the areas of trade, health services, and tourism prospects.

They chose Davao City because of its proximity to Palau and they were impressed by the health facilities, which are at par with those in Cebu and Manila. They also cited the generous and warm reception that the City Government and local businessmen extended to them.

The Rotary Club of Davao signed a sisterhood pact with the Rotary Club of Palau in a ceremony held at Ahfat restaurant Monday night.

RCD President Domingo Duerme of Philippine Airlines signed the pact with RCP President Chen Masang. The event was witnessed by MEDCO Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, former MEDCO Chair Anggie Angliongto and Deputy Honorary Consul to Palau Puyod.

Palau is a small island republic in the Pacific. From Davao, it is only about 2 hours by a small turbo jet aircraft. Its population is estimated to be about 20,000 and 7,000 of which are Filipino immigrants.

A FOREIGN investor is infusing millions of dollars to operate six review centers in the Philippines to assist those who would take examinations required of nurses seeking employment in the United States.

One of these centers will be set up in Davao City. In an interview Friday with Robert Von Weber, executive director for Asia and Africa of Staffing America, he said they want to reverse the ratio of Filipino nurses passing the examination.

He said the current ratio is at 25 percent for those who passed while 75 percent failed.

"It will be a comprehensive review equipped with modern technology," he said.

Although he did not state a bulk figure he said investments would entail millions.

Weber said their company started negotiations in the Philippines only last month and they had decided to set up the centers in Baguio, Isabela, Legaspi, Bicol, Cebu, and Davao.

In Baguio, he said they will be occupying an eight-floor building as it will also house 400 nurses from Korea to learn English.

The center he said will also include board and lodging, as classes will run until the evening.

He estimated that in five years they could only accommodate 36,000 in the Philippines and this is just a drop in the bucket compared to the need declared recently by a US news network that American would be needing two million nurses in five years.

Weber noted the qualities of Filipinos and with there being good at the language they could easily be trained on the conversational English.

He said they would bringing in US testing standards and experts here even as he cited that in the recent examinations involving 1,300 Filipino nurses only 211 passed.

Weber said that they are targeting 97 percent of their students passing the examinations.

The Staffing America is also looking for Filipino businessmen, as partners since ownership here based on law must be 60 percent Filipino while the remaining 40 of foreign ownership.

Sec Ebdane pushes for construction of Ulas flyover in Davao
By Rose B. Palacio

Davao City (10 June) -- Department of Public Works and Highways Secretary Hermogenes E. Ebdane Jr. said the government is pushing for the construction of the proposed Diosdado Macapagal (Ulas) Flyover in line with the President's agenda of providing social services to the people.

The proposed flyover being pursued by the DPWH would relieve the daily traffic headaches of motorists plying along Davao-Digos, Davao-Bukidnon roads and Davao City diversion road, Secretary Ebdane said.

A team of experts from the DPWH, Project Management Office for Feasibility Studies from Manila were in Davao City from May 29, 2006 to June 7, 2006 to conduct engineering and traffic surveys along Ulas junction for the proposed construction of the flyover, DPWH XI Director Dimas S. Soguilon reported.

Complementing the Manila team were technical people from the DPWH regional office and Davao City District Engineering Office headed by District Engineer Isagani Javier who provided assistance in the field operation and coordination with the local government of Davao city, proponent of the flyover project.

The traffic survey requires data from the intersection capability analysis, such as manual vehicle classification counts; vehicle queue survey; conflicting pedestrian count; number of bus stopping; travel time survey; and origin-destination survey.

At present, the flyover project with an estimated cost of some P504-million has a funding request to the Japanese Government Aid program (GGAP), through the Official Development Assistance (ODA) with the technical assistance of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA). DPWH is now complying with the requirements.

The multi-million project requires the construction of a four-lane concrete bridge, widening of existing roads, and construction of detour roads for the continuous flow of traffic.

Named after the former Philippine President and father of current national leader President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, the Diosdado Macapagal Flyover is a long-time dream project of Davao City whose growth rate is among the country's fastest.

After the traffic survey, the conduct of the Environment Impact Assessment and Resettlement Action Plan will follow. This will be conducted by the Environmental and Social Services of DPWH-central office, Manila. (DPWH-XI/PIA) [top]

Agree with you 100% on this Junax re:Underpass in Matina-Maa Crossing. I wish the city gov't can as well construct a circular pedestrian overpass in the DMC area. 3 overpasses to connect to the existing spanking one already in place. I saw this type of infra in Baguio City. It was nice.

Just an excerpt of the article by Butch Francisco-the same guy who was so fascinated by what he has seen in Davao during his last visit. He even said he wanted to seek audience with Mayor Digong to laud and thank him in person for what his leadership has done to Davao.

STARBYTES By Butch Francisco
The Philippine Star 06/10/2006

Among the young stars today, I have to admit that I have the softest spot in my heart for Angel Locsin. It’s the Miko Sotto factor, no doubt – since the late young actor was like a nephew to me.

Of course, most of you surely remember that Angel was Miko’s last girlfriend. She may have been the last of many (oh, you were such a naughty, naughty boy, Miko!), but Angel was truly loved by him (with due respect to the many others before her).

When Miko left us, I was witness to her grief and pain and I knew how she suffered deep inside. She would have been the best daughter-in-law of Ali Sotto and to this day they communicate regularly. Ali still cooks sinigang for her (Ali would buy the ingredients herself – at Uni-Mart – and prepare the dish) so that Angel would eat well – what with all the work she does.

In turn, I saw how Angel would buy Ali’s favorites – like durian, for instance, when we were in Davao. Actually, Angel and I both went to Davao that time for a GMA 7 project. While she thoughtfully bought durian for her Tita Ali, Ali had to beg from me just to give her a small tub of the fruit that tastes like heaven, but smells like hell.

I am the one who like to open a gallery in
Davao if possible, I like to also open a resto and a all you need for a wedding business, but one thing at a time. First I will see if I am welcome at all, then I will "sense the place" and learn what postition a woman may have in your society, then I will know if it is all possible. Well, stop here now, I like doing more then talking :wink2:

What can I say, forgetting women as an important part of the working society is not good? Want to know why, it mirrors the attitude towards this gender. Time for me to leave this thread as the only woman left it seems, really ...it is as you hinted a place for guys.."it is time to go lalalala it is time to say goodbye lalalalala"......

Glad dinabaw you got the fjäril I sent you!!:) Hope you enjoy it, min älskling!

btw, philippine independence is on june 12. i encourage everyone to change avatar into philippine flag if possible. thanks.

The next time ELSA KLENTCH (of CNN) visits the Philippines and if ever she'll drop by Davao...she'll be going to Bankerohan for sure. I heard from a friend, that while in Cebu in the late 90's she snubbed the malls there by shopping at Carbon, Cebu's version of Bankerohan.

bitaw no? like pinoy movies in the 80s...why is that?btw are you left-leaning too?
that's because from the 60's until the late 80s were a period of social/political changes in the world... remember vietnam, martial law, and the US bases... these were issues here in the country before because at that time...artists were realizing that there is no such thing as "art for art's sake" thats the time they realized that art has to be a catalyst for social change and a tool against oppression as they see it... it just so happened that martial law was that "oppression" they saw. as for me being a leftist... sometimes i agree with them. in fact, more than 80% of the population agree with left-leaning social policies such as universal healthcare, basic education, women's rights. the jesuits in fact are responsible for contributing to one faction of the leftist movement (the social democrats... the other being the national democrats or what we usually believe as far-left such as the communists.) we have government secretaries who are affiliated with socialist parties such as national security adviser Norberto Gonzales, Mike Defensor, etc. even people formerly members of socialist/progressive groups: Sen. Joker Arroyo, former Senator Wigberto Tanada, etc. in fact GMA is considered as a lost cause for some socialist and progressive groups because she was formerly a student activist during the marcos regime.

its just that sometimes the left's demonstrations can be so annoying.esp when they talk as if they speak for the majority on certain issues...

you should see the left during the 70s... the leftists you see today are more tame than before... when the metrocom of the 1970s would arrive to disperse rallies, they would usually bring firearms and the protesters (usually from the Kabataang Makabayan) would throw pillboxes, molotov cocktails, and use lead pipes. sometimes they would even engage in street battles against other leftist groups or nationalist groups to secure rallying sapce. they would usually fight with the old communist party's(PKP or partido komunista ng pilipinas) youth wing the malayang samahan ng kabtaang pilipino(mskp)... the kabataang makabayan being the youth wing of the new faction of the communist party now known as the cpp-npa-ndf. little known fact was that the old communist party or pkp was actually a legal party and was allowed by marcos to operate while the cpp of joma sison became more obsesses with the protracted war and the "digmang bayan" or civil war. while the pkp abandoned it long ago when they made peace with magsaysay.

its not about the rallies being tame or not, for me, its the fact that it upsets the already upset filipinos esp the marginalized ones.. they add fuel to the fire, and para kasi lagi na lang walang ginagawang tama ang gobyerno for them, tapos most of the issue they advocate (like wage increase thats too high it will cause most businesses to close) are geared towads the downfall of the phil.(this is how i see it lang ha..of course we have our own principles nad views)

uhmm maybe this topic (or topics that are political and religious in nature) may get too sensitive as people will have conflicting views talaga so maybe this isnt the forum for it? :)

^^ im not comparing them ok.. im just shedding light on history... and by the way, im not a leftist. and the wage increase is actually feasible and logical once you take into consideration the COLA, hyper-wage theory.
just to shed light... the labor movement is somewhat divided on whether it will be a 125 across the board or a 75 pesos minumum wage increase... the labor movement especially the labor party of the philiipines says that workers and capitalist wouldnt have been fighting today with regards to wge hikes if businessmen agreed to a manadatory profit shring scheme long ago... in tht case if a business has increse in profit there would be automatic wage increse if there's none then no wage increase... but the problem is the fact that all 12 regions rely on wage boards to carry out simultaneous wage hikes for all companies profiting or otherwise. and in some regions like ARMM, the needed wage hike is estimated by the NSO to be more than that pushed by congress since they need a 425 wage hike since most workers there earn something below 100 pesos. in some agri-inustrial business also pay meager wages like below 20 pesos per week. now some in the labor movement say they wouldnt have to always argue and fight with the employers if the mandatory profit sharing was approved since that would calm any fears of massive lay-offs and losses for companies.

There's nothing to worry about Jon, as regards how we got into the topic of your bor. Eugene works in a call centre where I moonlight as an agent as well. Usual "pinoy converstion" like "tiga saan ka?" when I said "taga Davao" and you know how it goes.. He said he used to "audit" Hino Davao and hang out with friends including Dan Belisario who he said lived in BV in 1992. So there...

**********************************************************

Regarding this lady councilor, For me, I have no qualms as to what idiology you embrace for as long as it doesn't get in the way of your duty as a public servant. Granting that her concern is the statue's impact on people's moral fiber I believe she should have done a survey ( if at all the benefit outweighs the expense of the exercise) first as to what is the majority's opinion about it and not jump the gun as if her discernment constitutes the whole Davaoeno populace.

You're right Jon, she has to shed her "miopic mind" and see what beauty the naked David has brought to this once deplorable place. Yes she might reason all she did was to protect her people from moral debase (she being arnean) but to me there's the more pressing call and that is to povide people jobs, jobs, jobs and jobs. How can we be so human with only the moral values to possess but with an empty stomach and no roof above our head.

BANKEROHAN is a wet and dry market and a very very interesting place where you can find exotic stuffs (that's for you to find out hahaha)....

Hello to all!

Im not privy to the SM Plans. The top execs I talked with are mum on the subject. Incidentally, I was with Jojo Mendiola, SM Davao Dept Store President, Friday and Saturday.

Last week in Manila, I visited the Mall of Asia. It is huge. Its three malls - interconnected. The farthest borders the seawall of Manila Bay. Some portions there I likened to the streets and shops at Clarke Quay and Boat Quay of Singapore. I went to check the Imax movie. My first time was in 1997 in Singapore.

Di pa tapos ang development. At its left, there is an e-commerce building being constructed. At its right, a convention center.

I told my friends in SM they should also consider the same at SM-City Davao. :)

@ konsehal...i apologize kc i havent been online for the past few days..been bz here kc....natuloy po ba yung meeting ng Davao IT e-group sa MTS? any updates regarding the Lims' and local developers' interested to develop an IT Park?

by the way, there will be a Call Center Conference and Expo in Edsa Shang this June 20 to 21 . Sayang, we could promote our city sana through that expo.

Reafirm ko lang how smoke belching is more dangerous than all other air pollutants!!!

Metro Manila choking like Hong Kong
BABE’S EYE VIEW By Babe Romualdez
The Philippine Star 06/11/2006

China may have won the rights to hold the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, but it’s facing a bigger challenge: it has to clean up the air before the games start in about 800 days. According to a World Bank report, China has become the second largest polluter in the world, next only to the United States. China has pitched the 2008 Olympics as the "Green Games" to showcase the country’s efforts to combat pollution, but it looks like it’s facing an uphill battle. Out of the top 20 most polluted cities in the world, 16 are in China, one of which is Beijing, the World Bank asserted. Chinese authorities have admitted that 40 percent of its cities are suffering from medium to high levels of air pollution. Compounding the problem is a looming water crisis with reports that China’s longest river, the Yangtze, is rapidly dying because of pollution, which has been described as "cancerous" by experts.

The irony of it all is that the United States – which refused to sign the 1997 Kyoto Protocol (along with Australia), is finally beginning to realize that the problem of pollution is indeed global. Recent reports indicated that China’s pollution is reaching American shores, particularly Seattle in Washington State. Toxic mercury caused by coal burning to fire up outmoded power plants and exhausts from China’s 31 million vehicles may be contributing to the worsening air quality in Seattle, scientists said. The US clearly has to rethink its position concerning the Kyoto Protocol when it’s up for deliberations again in 2012.

As a matter of fact, even Hong Kong is losing its appeal as an ideal place for expats, with many leaving because of the pollution. According to government figures, almost 26 percent of expats from the US, Australia, UK, and Canada have left Hong Kong since 2001, citing the worsening air quality as their reason. Last year, Hong Kong was rated as the 20th most ideal place out of 257 locations worldwide, but it has gone down to No. 32 in a recent survey. A lot of people avoid Hong Kong like the plague, myself included. Last February, several thousands who joined a marathon in Hong Kong complained of cramps and difficulty in breathing because of the thick smog that covered the city. Some 22 participants were brought to the hospital and one man eventually died because of respiratory problems. These people ran the marathon at a day when Hong Kong’s air pollution index was at 149, the highest level recorded since September last year. Makati and Greenhills particularly along EDSA have recorded a similar index especially during the summer months when there is hardly any wind.

Manila is also getting part of the pollution from China. Unfortunately, people are adding to the pollution, just like the photo that was recently shown at the STAR, with creeks teeming with garbage and the water contaminated with human waste from the nearby squatter colony. With the population sure to reach 100 million by 2014 or even earlier, the situation is going to get worse with more people contributing to the pollution in our air and water resources. This is one of the reasons why many, including me, are vehemently opposing the proposed housing project in the La Mesa watershed because it is a major source of water for 12 million Metro Manila residents, and the risk of contaminating this important water source should definitely not be allowed. If we don’t act decisively coupled with a strong political will, then we will soon be like China.

Likewise, people are also getting sick because of the worsening air quality in Metro Manila, described as having one of the dirtiest air sheds in the world. Chronic lung diseases reportedly afflict some two million Filipinos, and in 10 years, Metro Manila may become uninhabitable. The DENR and MMDA are encouraging people to use bicycles as a healthier alternative, but walking along smog-filled streets may be more dangerous to your health. It’s like smoking 20 packs of cigarettes in one swig. As a matter of fact, the cost of pollution is staggering. Sharp Philippines president Mitsunobu Hattori told me that the sales of Sharp air cleaners have increased by 1,000 percent over the past one and a half years. World Bank records show the air pollution in China is costing its economy some $25 billion a year on health expenses alone compounded by the loss of human productivity. Chinese officials pegged the figure even higher, saying that their country’s pollution problems are costing more than $200 billion a year, or the equivalent of 10 percent of its GDP.

Another World Bank study showed that in the Philippines, health costs from air pollution alone have reached $400 million a year. Some 65 percent of drugs purchased by the DOH were reportedly for treatment of respiratory diseases. People who have asthma, TB and other similar respiratory ailments are really at risk here, with children being most susceptible. What’s also unfortunate is that the cost of medicine is high, so you can just imagine how many people go through life wheezing and coughing without getting any relief because they don’t have the money to buy the medicine. In the first place, they can’t even afford to see a doctor. Just the other day, I had to go through a minor ear operation because of the polluted air which made my allergic rhinitis get worse. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever think it would come to this. That’s why every chance I get – I try to get out of Metro Manila even just for the day. But what about other people who can’t afford to leave? Just like in Hong Kong, people are beginning to get choked by the foul air, and several governments like Canada are discouraging citizens who have respiratory problems from going to the Philippines.

About 70 percent of air pollution is caused by toxic carbon monoxide emissions from vehicles, while the remaining 30 percent is caused by factories, the burning of garbage and various construction-related activities. The DENR is reportedly asking the US government to help in acquiring a radar system that can go after smoke belching vehicles, but clearly, a lot more is needed for the country to clean up its air. Environment Secretary Angie Reyes certainly has his hands full. If he did well in DILG going after kidnappers, then he should do no less in going after polluters. And he has to do it now, not later - before the number of people dying increases dramatically as the population increases. Metro Manila will be like Calcutta and not far behind Hong Kong – where every morning there will be a truck picking up dead bodies in the streets – not because of hunger but from the lack of clean air. A commodity fast becoming hard to come by.

Thats a great idea opening art gallery, Davao lack true apreciation onCulture and Arts , we have 2 great National Artists resided or born in our city their names are Victor Edades and Ang Kiukok but i wondered why they never had recognition. You can never see any streets, halls or parks name after them .hahahaha's funny their is one statue of an Indonesian man in our park but i truly don't recognize this guy. Maybe Davao have to change ways in recognizing culture and arts not exploit indeginous tribes just when festival comes.I know great cities always recognized their culture and arts!

Although people would normally object that before arts and culture can be given focus, basic necessities such as jobs and social welfare should be covered first, I agree that Davao should have an emphasis on the arts as well. It is a natural derivative of having a strong cultural heritage, especially with our diverse ethnic communities. Beautiful landscapes, rich flora and fauna, cultural melting pot, all these are sure to inspire an artist.

I believe that Davao's advantage over any other city in the Philippines in terms of ICT is in its creative potential. San Francisco has successfully combined art and technology in places such as Zeum (http://www.zeum.org/). I think we can grow our art heritage alongside ICT development. Organizations like Pukaw (http://www.pukaw.com) are doing it for independent filmmaking, embracing digital filmmaking and the Net, but retaining the Mindanawan identity.

Events such as animation festivals featuring works that celebrate Davao's rich culture and landscape can promote this further. Of course, this is not to lose touch of our National artists, Victor Edade and Ang Kiukok. Even musical artists such as Joey Ayala (http://www.joeyayala.com), who brought the Lumad (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lumad)'s music to mainstream, should be honored.

A Country Where Marvels Never Cease
06-11-2006 21:04

Experience the Philippines, all 7,107 of its islands: its heritage, its natural wonders, and its warm, fun-loving people.
With over a hundred ethnic groups, the archipelago acquires enchanting uniqueness from its rich mixture of foreign influences and confident fusion of culture and arts _ marriages that have shaped and enhanced the character of the Filipino people.

An archipelago situated four hours south of Korea, the Philippines is made up of three main island groups: Luzon in the north, Visayas in the middle, and Mindanao in the south.

Each island presents a diversity of destinations, activities and events. Vast mountains and volcanoes tell of great legends. Old cities whisper stories of the past. Caves and underground rivers taunt and mesmerize. Shimmering waters and a tropical climate lure travelers all year round.

The Philippines is considered the third largest English-speaking nation in the world. For travelers looking for world-class amenities and services, look no further.

The Philippines not only boasts of natural beauty but also excellent accommodations, top-rate restaurants, large shopping centers and state-of-the-art facilities. It likewise has the world’s best conference organizers and tour operators.

Keep these in mind as we tour the hotspots of the Philippines, starting with the capital city of Manila.

Bustling with activity, Manila is where modern hotels, restaurants, discotheques, music bars and specialty shops blend harmoniously with the city’s wealth of historical sites and cultural relics, such as the walled city of Intramuros and the numerous museums, theaters, art galleries and parks within its vicinity.

In the outskirts of the greater Manila area, in Tagaytay City, you can find the smallest volcano in the world, the Taal Volcano.

Inside the volcano is a crater lake, although the volcano itself lies in the middle of another lake formed from the remains of a much earlier, larger explosion. The view from the ridge is captivating.

Moving northwest from Manila, we come to Subic and Clark, former U.S. bases which now serve as Leisure and Economic Zones, respectively. Travelers can trek in the nearby rainforest as well as enjoy a variety of water sports available in adjacent beaches.

Because the two areas have been designated as special economic zones, duty free shopping is available in shops and malls. For those who want to witness the Hot Air Balloon Festival, the much-awaited event is held every February.

If mountains are your cup of tea, then the Mountain Province is perfect for you. Baguio City and Banaue attract intrepid travelers who can’t get enough of the fresh mountain air.

Baguio City, dubbed the City of Pines, is the summer capital of the Philippines. Golf, mountain biking, hiking, and horseback riding are some of its most popular sports.

Further north are the Banaue Rice Terraces _ rice fields fashioned from the slope of the mountains _ where the local Ifugao tribe has been farming for the last 2000 years.

Mountain Province is likewise known as the ``Weaver’s Paradise,’’ where there are numerous weaving centers featuring indigenous designs that reveal the province’s cultural heritage.

Located on the northwestern tip of Luzon are Laoag and Vigan. Colonial buildings and streets have been preserved up to this day in Vigan.

Spanish colonial churches dating back to the 1600s are found here, including the well-known Paoay Church, Laoag Cathedral, Dingras Church and St. Paul’s Metropolitan Church.

Fort Ilocandia Resort, meanwhile, is one of many resorts that line the sandy hills of Laoag and serve as take-off points for its pristine dive spots.

Next on our itinerary are places that truly embody the island spirit: Palawan, Boracay, Cebu, Bohol and Camiguin, and lastly, Davao. Each one is blessed with splendid coastlines and hold distinct surprises.

Palawan, considered the last frontier of the country, has the best-preserved natural habitat. Underground rivers form intricate waterways.

The Tabon Caves, where fossilized human bones dating to approximately 24,000 years ago were discovered, is an important archaeological site.

Divers from all over the world also flock to El Nido and its neighboring islands to check out the exotic dive spots.

Meanwhile, Calauit Island boasts a game preserve and wildlife sanctuary that shelters both indigenous species and African wildlife. Sea turtles, sea cows and a variety of marine life nestle in its shores.

Boracay is perhaps most famous for its beaches. The destination of choice for many honeymooners from Korea, Boracay has always been synonymous with aquatic fun, island hopping and active nightlife.

The whole island is a long stretch of serene beach with fine, white sand and well-equipped resorts that cater to all types.

Cebu, Bohol and Camiguin dot the southeastern part of Visayas.

Cebu is the oldest city of the Philippines and the site of the Cross of Christianity, which the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan erected in 1521. The island has also gained a name for its delicious mangos.

Bohol lies east of Cebu, home to centuries-old churches, ancestral houses, the intriguing Chocolate Hills and the world’s smallest monkey, the Tarsier.

Camiguin, on the other hand, has earned a reputation for magnificent beaches that are still largely unscathed by modern civilization.

Last, but not least, is Davao, a trough of natural wonders. This is where you can find the largest DOLE pineapple farm in the Philippines and the majestic Philippine Eagle, the archipelago’s national bird.

Exotic fruits like durian and mangosteen abound here. Davao is fast emerging as a prime destination for patrons of beach resorts and golf courses.

What, then, are you waiting for? Come experience the 7,107 islands of the Philippines, where marvels never cease!

Gov't officials back 2 eagle facilities

TWO new facilities for public education on Philippine wildlife were officially opened last Saturday at the Philippine Eagle Center in Barangay Malagos, Baguio District, Davao City. A press statement from the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. (Pefi), said guests to the eagle center can now appreciate the different raptor (birds of prey) species found in the Philippines as they pass through the Hawk Walk, while young audiences are treated to interactive exhibits on the Philippine Eagle and Philippine biodiversity in a children's exhibit room called Diola's forest. "We've always believed in molding young minds because these are the minds that will determine how our eagles and natural resources will be cared for in the future," Philippine Eagle Foundation Executive Director Dennis Salvador said. "These new facilities are targeted at helping the youth better appreciate the gifts from nature they have, and hopefully inspire them to actively participate in its care and protection," he said.

Hawk walk

Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and the City Government of Davao funded the construction of the Hawk Walk, a special alley displaying a variety of raptor species found in the Philippines. The Hawk Walk is designed to allow visitors to have a close and personal encounter with the birds. With 10 adjoining compartments housing different types of raptors, visitors are also able to note the unique features of each bird and differentiate between species. The mayor pledged support for the proposed project as early as late 2003. After months of planning and design, construction began in June 2005 and was completed in late September.

Congressmen commit

Meanwhile, similar efforts to support public education on the Philippine Eagle had also been brewing in the House of Representatives at around the same time the Hawk Walk project was born. During the Araw ng Dabaw celebrations in 2002, Congressman Vincent Garcia of the 2nd District of Davao City invited several of his colleagues in congress to visit the city, and got their commitment to help in conservation efforts for the Philippine Eagle. Garcia and eight other congressmen chose to support a comprehensive conservation education project that included the production of a documentary titled "Hope for the Eagles," the improvement of existing audio-visual facilities at the Center, the provision of falcony materials and the renovation of the biodiversity exhibit room into Diola's Forest. Diola's Forest is an enhanced children's discovery room directed at providing interactive learning for young audiences. The room is composed of six modules.

The first and second modules feature display boards and three-dimensional fiberglass figures of trees, lizards and vines to represent the forest, and touch-screen computers for the enjoyment and education of the young audience. The third and fourth modules provide information on Philippine Eagles, with a stuffed specimen of the eagle and various eagle artifacts such as eggs and feather on display. The last modules provide visitors with more fiberglass representations of the forest ideal for photo opportunities.

Representatives Gilbert Remulla, Juan Miquel Zubiri, Del de Guzman, Kim Bernardo-Lokin, Ed Chatto, Felix William Fuentebella, Eileen Ermita-Buhain, and Joel Villanueva joined Garcia in the effort. (With report from Tatit Quiblat-Pefi communication officer)

MEMBER-nations of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga) have forged a new agreement, which is expected to increase the load factor of airlines companies in the growth area.

The agreement was reached during the recently concluded BIMP-Eaga Transport Ministers Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei Darussalam.

Mindanao Business Council chair Romeo Serra said the granting of full fifth freedom traffic rights in the BIMP-Eaga region is a start to further smoothen air transport linkages in the region.

The agreement includes the designation of two selected Eaga entry points in each member country every year starting this year and subsequently all Eaga points by 2008 with fifth freedom traffic rights for scheduled passenger and cargo services.

Member countries are also urged to encourage the cooperation among BIMP-Eaga airlines by implementing co-terminalization with own stopover right and code sharing arrangement.

In the meantime, efforts are focused on the establishment of scheduled passenger services between Davao City-Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia)-Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei Darussalam) and between Pontianak (Indonesia)-Kuching (Malaysia)-Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei Darussalam).

In the meeting, the Philippines announced its reduction of civil aviation charges by 50 percent for air service operators operating in the BIMP-Eaga sub-region.

It was recommended by the Philippine delegation that all other member countries should formulate their own local incentives to support the development of air transport linkages.

The ministers recognized the importance of public-private partnership for a conducive business environment.

"We are asking the private sector to be pro-active and innovative in the development of transport facilities and services," Serra said.

Another aspect suggested to be highly developed is the trade and tourism sector, which are believed to support and sustain the transport linkages in the sub region.

Happy Independence Day to all. Nice Pix Dave.

Re your post for 2.53 growth, here's an older estimate at 2.83. I'm actually skeptical of the projected doubling to 2 -2.5 mil pop for Davao in 2024. It really seems very small, anyway fears of environmental degradation etc can be mitigated by proper planning. This time period is expected to see population growth of 45million people for the Republic. Increased development means that there will be greater urbanization and most probably longer lifespans, hence growth in cities.

DAVAO CITY:
POPULATION EXPECTED TO DOUBLE IN 24 YEARS
(Results from the 2000 Census of Population and Housing, NSO)

Population to double in 24 years

Davao City recorded a total population of 1,147,116 persons in the 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000). This was up by 140,276 persons as compared to 1,006,840 persons recorded in the 1995 Census of Population (POPCEN). For the period 1995 to 2000, the annual population growth rate for Davao City was 2.83 percent, lower than that of the 1990 to 1995 period (3.22 percent). If the current annual population growth rate of the city continues, the population of Davao City was expected to double in 24 years.

The number of households increased to 240,057 as compared to 198,668 households in 1995. The average household size recorded in Census 2000 was 4.77 persons, lower than the 1995 figure of 5.05 persons and the 2000 national average of five persons.

TECHNICAL NOTES

Average Household Size average number of people who live in the household

Growth Rate the rate at which the population is increasing (or decreasing) in a given year due to natural increase and net migration, expressed as a percentage of the base population

Median Age the age at which exactly half of the population is young and half is old

Sex Ratio the ratio of males to females in a given population expressed as the number of males per 100 females

Age-Dependency Ratio the ratio of persons in the "dependent" ages (under 15 years and over 64 years) to those in the "economically productive" ages (15 to 64 years old) in the population

Household a social unit consisting of a person or a group of persons who sleep in the same housing unit and have common arrangements in the preparation and consumption of food

The 2000 Census of Population and Housing (Census 2000) was undertaken by the National Statistics Office (NSO) in May 2000, as mandated by Commonwealth Act No. 591, Batas Pambansa Blg. 72 and Executive Order No. 121. It was the 11thcensus of population and 5thcensus of housing undertaken in this country since the first census in 1903. It was designed to take an inventory of the total population and housing units all over the Philippines and to collect information about their characteristics. Census day for the Census 2000 was May 1, 2000 (12:01 a.m.). Enumeration started on May 1, 2000 and lasted for about 30 days.

Being a highly urbanized city, the population of Davao City was excluded in the population counts of Davao del Sur. As defined in the 1991 Local Government Code, a city is considered highly urbanized if it has an annual income of not lower than fifty million pesos based on 1991 constant prices, as certified by the city treasurer; and its population is at least two hundred thousand (200,000) inhabitants, as certified by NSO.

Please visit our "open skies" campaign site (http://funchain.com/~openskiesdavao) for my reaction. Salamat! :)

Min älskling. I understand the problems. And it is also a true fact that artist all over the world have a harder time then many to survive on their artistic work. Another fact is that artist need to be able to work in their trade where ever they live on this globe and also get recognition for it. I understand it is a dilemma when there are many needs to care about. But if artist in Davao want to be on the cutting edge they could use the digital art as a platform and also easy get out to the rest of the world through this media and maybe make an Asian art biennale in Davao and invite other Asian artist. There are money to get from organizations for these types of projects , like UN or UNESCO it is one way to help art develope and a reacurring biennale will grow and become an income soruce with time and also put Davao on the cultural map. Everybody starts out at zero in the artworld and there are many ways to go if living in a country were money is lacking.

Here is an address for funding of Asian art projects, they work for many parts for the world but Asia is considered a prime area. They know about all types of grants.

A NON-government organization will be gathering around 1,500 indigenous people from different tribes in the world for a cross-pollination of cultures and best practices.

The Tribal Mission Foundation International, a volunteer organization, will be holding the 6th World Christian Gathering on Indigenous People (WCGIP) on September 11 to 17 in the Insular Hotel.

WCGIP assistant director Ma. Elena Bicaldo said it is the first time for the country to host the said event with Davao City as the chosen venue.

"Davao City is very unique. It has more than 42 indigenous groups, that's why we chose the city," Bicaldo said during the Kapihan sa PIA conference Saturday.

According to Bicaldo, the Asean Tourism Forum helped in showing the uniqueness of the city, which is why the group preferred Davao City as its venue.

She added that Mindanao Tribal Mission Foundation is also based on Davao City.

"Meanwhile, on the practical side, it would be much cheaper for us," she said.

Bicaldo said the gathering would be a cultural revitalization for the indigenous groups.

"We will encourage the indigenous people to express their indigenous belief and culture," she disclosed.

WCGIP Vision Keeper Terry Le Blanc, who will be one of the speakers in the conference, said ever since the conference started they have always seen big outcomes.

"The gathering will have expected and unexpected outcomes that will be very productive for the indigenous people," said Blanc.

Expected to participate are countries such as US, Canada, Scandinavia, Russia, Australia, New Zealand and several countries in Asia, to include the Philippines.

You are busy, busy working witht he house project today...I know...I am lazy and reading art jounals. School stoped for 10 weeks summerholidays here so lazy vacation.
About art again, how does artist go about in Davao, since I do believe you do have artist. I mean the visual art now. Music has its own puls and it´s own life, and is of course as important as any other artform in any society. But I am interested int the visual art right now, if there is not a big market for art in Davao and no help for artis through the goverment, how does artist survive???? I know many artist all over the world do work with a second money income, but can do their art and find a place for it in exhibitions etc. How about Davao, the way you and some other forumers descriebe the cultural life in Davao, is seems rather hopeless to be an artist in Davao. I have seen one Philippino cartoon artist who takes part in international exhibitions. Maybe some of the Davao artist do exhibit in other contries as well??? The IT-world is of big value. If I have understood it right Davao have or is about to build up a IT-business, IT_service and this would be a good oportunity to also involve artists and other cultural workers to develope a network for them too. There is so much that can be done for the culture if someone just is interested to do it and put the effort into it, because it takes hard work!!!! You said you need food first of all, I understand that but a society without art and cultural "food for the soul" is a very dead socitey indeed. One does not need to take away the other is what I mean. Does your Konsehal work with these matters or do you have any person involved in cultural matters for the city of Davao??? Why do I care you might ask I am not a davaoenya?? Well I care for artists all over that is just the way I am!!!!

BTW, Davao City will be featured in a super roadshow in Beijing as the new tourist destination in Asia. This will be on June 22 at the Beijing International Tourism Exposition. If plans won't miscarry I will be there, courtesy of Philippine Airlines, to chronicle the event and to touch base with media outlets and tour operators there.

by the way, there will be a Call Center Conference and Expo in Edsa Shang this June 20 to 21 . Sayang, we could promote our city sana through that expo.

Hello to all!

Sorry for the late reaction tj.

We have been missing a lot of promotional opportunities. I guess City Hall is not serious about this matter.

Last month, the DOT/PCVC sent a tourism mission to Japan, our country's and our city's main tourist market. Davao was one of the focus. Cebu sent 12 campaigners; Negros 10. Davao City government - 0. I believe only Marco Polo singlehandedly made the selling there for Davao and the hotel.

Next week, DTI is sending a mission to Taiwan. No city government rep too.

So, in the Call Center conference, I believe none will also go. :bash:

I don't understand, why is the City not sending anyone there. Is there no initiative despite the PR that's been coming out from the City Government? Definitely can't be budgetary doesn't cost much plus it's marketing.

I think this is the reason why we're ranked 6th in "responsiveness to business needs". It is suffice to say that we just have to work things out without government support.

Anyway, Sir Peter, as long as the government doesn't stand in the way of private sector efforts, that's fine. I'm positive the Chamber of Commerce is willing to take on this role, as well as, of course, the citizenry. Davao's number one marketers are the Davaowenyos, just like the ones in this forum. Word-of-mouth, anyway, is the best marketing tool of all.

However, if this forum can spin-off a lobbying group for more investment promotion focus for Davao's leaders, I'm game.

(I'm suspecting, though, that the local government has a different attitude towards trade missions such as these. Perhaps these things do not generate as much bottomline results as other activities.)

THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Davao Region is expected to declare "Minahan ng Bayan" in the provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental to address the lingering issue on illegal small scale mining in these areas.

Mines bureau director for Southern Mindanao Ed Arreza said they have proposed to legalize the operation of small-scale miners in areas like Pantukan, Nabunturan, Maco, and Mati.

But Arreza admitted the process for declaring these areas as Minahan ng Bayan would take a long process.

The mines bureau would have to conduct first a technical evaluation stage with the current condition and minerals abundance of the areas.

They will have to secure then clearances from the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Department of Public Works and Highways, National Commission on Indigenous People, and the National Power Corporation.

After which, it will undergo a series of deliberations to confirm the approval of legalization of the area as Minahan ng Bayan.

Lastly, it would be published by local media as officially declared Minahan ng Bayan for the information and awareness of the public.

The mines bureau has so far already conducted technical evaluation in Pantukan and Nabunturan.

If declared a Minahan ng Bayan, small-scale miners will be assured of investments and technical assistance.

Miners will also be paying only their income taxes. They could also transport their products legally to any point since they could now avail of transport permit.

I don't understand, why is the City not sending anyone there. Is there no initiative despite the PR that's been coming out from the City Government? Definitely can't be budgetary doesn't cost much plus it's marketing.
this is what i was talking about during my initial posts here, the city govt. ( except for konsehal) isnt too keen in promoting DC to investors..parang i get the feeling na nagsalig ang DC coz its already an established city..:(

the thing is dili pa jud baya, and unless the govt becomes aggressive on promoting DC, ambot na lang asa ta ani 10-15years from now...

ok man unta na daghan ta socio economic activities/programs..pero dapat sabay din ang investment promotion..what if ok na kaayo ang socio econoics tapos nanghawa na mga young profs nato kay namalhin na elsewhere kay naa did2 ang work opportunity..dugay dugay na pud baya nagsugod ang exodus nila ( ive got friends who now live in manila, cebu ..even CDO and bacolod kay naa did2 ang work)...haaay :( :( :(

:bash:
maayong adlaw po konsehal

sa akong hunahuna ra ni sir..., was it because marco polo's delegation was led by its marketing manager who at same time president of davao tourism association. and city hall might have thought he's got what it takes to represent them?

we just hope dti davao has a good coordination with city hall this time and have the official blessing to represent them(mayor's spokesperson sort of). and hoping too davao chamber of commerce and trade is represented for a stronger delegation. i just hope there's no politics involved in davao city hall's apathy. wish there is someone in this forum from there who can talk about the issue. so we can hear their side from.

a working councilor like you is worth the praise. hope your dream for the city will one day be enjoyed by every davaoeno. good job sir

Tourism sector bills DC as ‘cheaper’ shopping option
By Carmelito Q. Francisco

Palauans, or the people of Palau, have found a shopping haven in this city as they come over just to spend their dollars during weekends.
This has become possible after the budget airline Asian Spirits started its three-times-a week flight between the city and Palau that started on April 2, said Tourism Davao Regional Director Sonia Garcia.
This developed as the tourism sector is looking at Palau as possible gateway in attracting more Japanese to the city.
Arturo Boncato Jr., Davao Tourism Association president, said the industry will look into how it can lure Japanese who visit Palau to dive now that there is a flight between the tiny Micronesian country and the city. Japanese divers are among the many visitors who visit Palau because of its beautiful diving spot.
And considering that the Davao Gulf is among the primary diving areas in the country, it would be easier for the tourism sector to attract those Japanese divers visiting Palau to extend their visit to the diving areas of the gulf, he said.
“We hope to capture that market,” said Boncato in reference to Japanese divers who go to Palau to dive.
He said this can now be possible because Palau can be used as entry point for Japanese travelers who want to explore the diving areas of the Davao Gulf. He said the existence of a direct flight between Palau and the city has served as “a good opportunity for us (in the tourism industry) to explore that market,” he said.
Tourism regional director for the Davao region Sonya Garcia said people from Palau have come to shop in the big malls of the city because their department stores are a lot smaller and offer lesser products. “Besides, goods here are a lot cheaper in terms of how much their money can buy compared with what they can buy in their country,” she added.
The city has become the “weekend getaway” of people from Palau who sometimes bring all members of their family to savor what the city can offer them, Garcia said.
Aside from the shopping malls, people from Palau also avail of services of hospitals, hotels and wellness centers, she added. “We should strengthen this market because it is nearer us,” she added.
Meanwhile, Boncato said aside from Japanese divers, the tourism industry is also positioning the city as destination for “wellness tourism” for the Japanese. He said the spa centers and other related businesses in the city can offer what the Japanese people are looking for in wellness establishments.
The city is also being packaged as a good destination for golfers not just from Japan but from other short-haul markets like South Korea and China.
On May 21-22, Mr. Boncato, sales and marketing manager of the Marco Polo Hotel joined the Philippine mission that visited Japanese cities like Tokyo, Osaka and Nagoya. The hotel was among the 37 companies that join the sales pitch in the Japanese market.
“It was a good opportunity for us to market Davao,” he said, pointing out that the thrust of the Philippine tourism is to make the city in particularly, and the region in general, as a secondary destination to Manila and Cebu.
It was during the trip when Mr. Boncato realized that the Japanese market had that “impression” that Davao was only about beautiful beaches and nothing else. Because of this, the tourism industry will try to change its packaging of the city into a more attractive destination by highlighting other features of the city like its eco-tourism areas, among them the Philippine Eagle Center in Malagos.

STEAG coal plant expansion eyed to plug Mindanao supply shortfall
By MYRNA M. VELASCO

With Mindanao electricity consumers wary of near-term power outages, Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla noted that they are partly pinning hope on prospects that the 210-megawatt coal-fired power facility of STEAG State Power Inc. will gear up for an expansion.

At the moment, the energy chief can only make assurance that the government will do its level-best to address looming supply shortfall in the area.

"There is a big possibility that there would be additional supply for the island if Mindanao coal plant expands," he told an inquiry of the Joint Congressional Power Commission.

The facility is scheduled for commercial operation January next year and this is seen adding up 15 percent of the island grid’s supply. However, this is not enough to guarantee reliable supply for Mindanao, even in the immediate term.

Apart of the transmission line link-up being pursued by the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), the energy chief opined that the best solution to plug capacity gap would still be to put a power plant or expand the capacity of existing facilities in the area.

"It is ideal for the source of power to be put up in the island and nearer to where the demand is," the energy chief stressed.

Studies of TransCo indicated that Mindanao has a surplus capacity of 373 megawatts. However, more than 70 percent of this generating capacity is found in Northern Mindanao with the southern part only accounting for more than 20 percent.

Demand, however, is booming in the South, fuelled largely by the economic growth being experienced by the cities of Davao and General Santos which have seen electricity demand increase by 10 percent annually.

The siting and design of future capacity, according to the energy secretary, shall of course take into consideration the recurrent problem of terrorist attacks in some parts of Mindanao.

TransCo has been lining up the Leyte-Mindanao interconnection project; but JCPC co-chairman and Lanao del Norte Rep. Alipio Cirilo V. Badelles said that this should first be subjected to a more cautious study, because if supply shortages in Visayas or Mindanao occurs, the consumers might be saddled with paying for fixed costs of facilities that might not be useful in the future.

With the proposed uprating of the Abaga-Kirahon and Maramag-Bunawag transmission lines, it is hoped that greater volume of supply can be transmitted from the northern part of Mindanao, where most of the power plants are located, to the southern corridor

With existing capacity not being able to reliably supply the entire grid’s requirement in the next few years though, the energy department is now aggressively inviting investors to put up new power projects in the area.

But as the government flexes muscles to lure much-needed investment for additional capacities in Mindanao, investors have raised concern over relentless threat of attacks on power installations in the area, noting that this thrives among the most daunting challenge that they would have to contend with.

It can be culled that some parts of Mindanao have been a perpetual breeding ground of terroristic activities, particularly those perpetrated by Abu Sayyaf and secessionist groups.

i just dont understand and it sometimes frustrates me why davao should be marketed as a "secondary" destination "next" to cebu and manila. marketing efforts and local government support are not that aggressive and now we want davao to be just a "secondary" destination? its a double blow. i think this should change.

good point!!! why secondary?must we always be in the shadows of Manila? even Cebu for that matter? or is bbecause durano is from Cebu? i remeber how he insulted us in one DOT ad (where davao was excluded in the initial run) saying those not included were not ready for tourist..or so it sound like..

There had been so much talk about that a while back. you're both right. if it's gonna be a mall should be somewhere 5 hectares and above. outside parking would eat up a lot of space plus the mall too. i remember when i worked at victoria plaza before (during construction stage), robert limso mentioned it was 11 hectares (mulling expansion in the future).

Good evening Paul, MtApo, Gravy, Archipino!!!!Hope your day is nice!?I have a question about art do you have strong modern and postmodern influences form Europe and America in your art mediums? Does the Philippine culture itself play a central roll in the art spirit of today and would I see this in davao and how? I am not talking only about the statue David and his private parts. Michael Angelo would be rolling in his grave. But I do not think he would mind the groupies in the audience :) On the other hand it is a real good peace of post modernism, what is that statue made out of?

^^ hi lena. my day's nice, sunny and cheery.

about your question. personally philippine art have much of it's influence from europe and america. medium-wise, technique and content, much of it come from there too. it's only lately (lately means in the last 20-30 years) that there has been much questioning on what really is philippine art. is there or it's a hudge-pudge of so many influence. the question is as much the answer, quite difficult of explain. a lot of filipino artists' works are rooted from their own experience, if that is to be the case, then to each his/her own that dictates what early is philippine art. unlike chinese or japanese art wherein there's a distinct style or form, philippine art is still evolving and that will be the constant state. there is not one area that will dictate philippine art, although i will presume, all forms are dynamic and there is a constant borrowing (heavily) from all.

there's a lot of galleries but no art museums. but there's probably a few or one that have been surviving up to now.

from what i can share with you, be in for a surprise on the variedness of the filipino artists.

Hi. Artists in the Philippines are very diverse in influences. Davao's National Artist, Ang Kiukok, is modernist. Some call his art style as "figurative expressionism." His direct influence and mentor, Vicente Manansala, is a modernist and a major proponent of cubism in the Philippines.

Philippine culture, in particular, the rural lifestyle, is oftentimes the subject of paintings. Landscapes are often juxtaposed against farmlands or fishermen in boats. There are postmodern artists in the Philippines that venture into pop art or collages, but none yet have acquired a National Artist status.

Do u know the restaurant called "Inbox"?? I have read the article about it and I'm so excited to go there. It's location is in Bajada beside SSS building. Read the newspaper for sure.

Another one is Natasha in Ecoland (Near in my subdivision and only a walking distance!! but it is not complete yet). It has a good infrastructure and I think it's a right location. Lastly the "Mang Inasal" restaurant in SM. I think the grand opening will be on June 17, 2006. I'm not sure bcuz they always change the date.

I hope it's enough and I think I have contributed something good and not exciting (As i have said). Anyway, I'm curious about the Ayala mall. I hope it's bigger than the mall of Asia (hahaha!!). I hope robinsons is bigger than SM. Speaking of SM, Is the expansion planned?? I'm so excited also about SM. I hope it's like Bicutan that they have walkalators. Pls. reply. Anyway I will not fly anywhere.

Davao City is one of the most important cities in the Philippines and the de facto capital of the island of Mindanao, it is also the largest city in the Philippines in area. Its international airport and seaport is one of the busiest cargo hubs in the Southern Philippines. Davao City is also one of several cities in the Philippines that are independent of any province though it is usually grouped with Davao del Sur for statistical purposes. The city is also the regional center for Davao Region (Region XI). It is one of the world's largest cities in terms of land area, occupying more than 2,400 square kilometers. Davao City has a population of around 1.5 million people but an estimated 2 million people are in the city during the day for work and other activities.

Davao City is located at 7°30' North, 126°0' East (7.5, 126.0). [1] According to the 2000 census, it has a population of 1,147,116 people in 240,057 households.

It is currently known as a center of BPO operations in the Philippines. The city is projected to rake in at least 5 billion US dollars in annual revenue by 2010, according a CITEM report.

Some famous world class universities can be found in Davao: such as University of the Immaculate Conception (The oldest school in Mindanao), Ateneo de Davao University, University of Mindanao, University of SouthEastern Philippines, and University of the Philippines-Mindanao.

In recent years, the sprawling urban metropolis has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub for southern Philippines. Davao City is a melting pot of diverse migrant and indigenous communities, resulting in a unique charm and culture that is woven into a rich tapestry of ethnic and contemporary styles.

Davao City’s slogan, “From Islands to Highlands” perfectly captures its wealth of attractions. The city boasts some of the finest beach and mountain resorts in the country, and close proximity to the Philippines’ most captivating diving spots as well as its highest peak, Mt Apo.

History
Local historians claim that the word davao came from the phonetic blending of the word of three Bagobo subgroups when referring to Davao River, an essential waterway which empties itself into Davao Gulf near the city. The aboriginal Obos who inhabit the hinterlands of the region called the river, Davoh; the Clatta or Guiangans called it Duhwow, or Davau, and the Tagabawa Bagobos, Dabu. To the Obos, the word davoh also means a place "beyond the high grounds", alluding to the settlements located at the mouth of Davao River which were surrounded by high rolling hills. When asked where they were going, the usual reply is davoh, while pointing towards the direction of the town. Duhwow also refers to a trading settlement where they barter their forest goods in exchange for salt or other commodities.

Spanish influence was hardly felt in the Davao until 1847, when an expedition led by Don Jose Uyanguren came to establish a Christian settlement in an area of mangrove swamps that is now Bolton Riverside. Davao was then ruled by a Moro chieftain, Datu Bago, who held his settlement at the banks of Davao River (once called Tagloc River by the Bagobos). After Uyanguren defeated Datu Bago, he renamed the region Nueva Guipozcoa, in honor of his home in Spain, and became its first governor. Oyanguren's efforts to develop the area, however, did not prosper.

A few years after the American forces landed in 1900, private farm ownership grew and transportation and communication facilities were improved, thus paving the way for the region's economic growth.

A Japanese entrepreneur named Kichisaburo Ohta was granted permission to exploit vast territories which he transformed into abacá and coconut plantations. The first wave of Japanese plantation workers came onto its shores in 1903, creating a Japan kuo, or Little Japan. They had their own school, newspapers, an embassy, and even a Shinto Shrine. On the whole, they established extensive abaca plantations around the shores of Davao Gulf and developed large-scale commercial interests such as copra, timber, fishing and import-export trading. Filipinos learned the techniques of improved cultivation from the Japanese so that ultimately, agriculture became the lifeblood of the province's economic prosperity.

Davao was formally inaugurated as a chartered city on March 1, 1937 by President Manuel L. Quezon. Thirty years later, Davao was subdivided into three independent provinces, namely Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. Over the years, Davao has become an ethnic melting pot as it continues to draw migrants from all over the country, lured by the prospects of striking it rich in the country's third largest city.

Land use and area
Total land area of Davao City is 2,443.61 square kilometers. In terms of land area, it is considered as one of the largest cities in the world. It is divided into 3 congressional districts with barangays (smallest political villages) totaling to 180.

Mt. Apo overlooks Davao City.Almost 50% of its total land area is classified as timberland or forest. Agriculture utilizes about 43%. This is reflective of the fact that agriculture is still the largest economic sector. Big plantations that produce banana, pineapple, coffee, and coconut eat up a large chunk of the total land area.

Presently, built-up areas used for residential, institutional, commercial, and industrial purposes represent about 10% of the total land area. Under the approved land use plan built-up and settlement area will cover 15% of the total area while agricultural will be maximized with 67.19%. The remaining 17.68 will be devoted for forest and conservation.

Government
Davao City is governed by a mayor who exercises executive powers provided for under the Local Government Code of the Philippines. The mayor is assisted by a vice mayor, who is also the ex officio head of the city council. The city council is composed of councilors coming from the four territorial districts of the city. The mayor, vice mayor and members of the city council are elected at large by the people. They serve for three years and are entitled to three consecutive terms only. On the other hand, the head of barangay captains association and the youth federation (Sangguniang Kabataan), are the only non-elective members of the city council.

Legislative power is vested solely on the city council, while the mayor has the authority to issue executive orders based on existing laws and ordinances. The mayor also exercises veto powers, which the city council can override by an absolute majority vote.

Unique to the local government set-up of the city is the designation of a deputy mayor by the city mayor. Although an appointive official only, the deputy mayor serves as a direct link to the city mayor especially for people living outside the city proper. The deputy mayor also serves as the city mayor's representative in community events. The functions of the position is considered as complementary to the functions of the city vice-mayor, given the large territorial jurisdiction of the city.

The city is politically subdivided into 180 barangays, each of which is headed by a barangay captain and a body of councilors. The barangay usually executes policies and ordinances passed by the city council or executive orders issued by the city mayor, while legislative acts of the barangay council only pertain to issues or concerns that are peculiar to the barangay-level only.

The current mayor of Davao City is Rodrigo Duterte, a former government prosecutor and congressman. His no-nonsense style of implementing the law earned him the monicker "Punisher of Davao." He is assisted by city vice-mayor Luis Bonguyan, widely presumed to succeed Duterte once the latter completes his three consecutive terms as city mayor.

Day-to-day operations of the city government are handled by the city administrator, who is appointed by the city mayor.

Accessibility
Davao City is very accessible. As the gateway to the Philippine South, it has regular air, sea, and land linkages to major points in the country. It is one (1) hour and 40 minutes away from Manila (the country’s capital) by plane and only 30 minutes away from Cebu City. It has daily flights to Singapore, twice weekly flights to Manado, Indonesia and thrice weekly flights to Palau starting April 2, 2006. The city can also be accessed from other major cities in the Philippines by air such as Zamboanga City and Iloilo City while Cagayan de Oro City, a major city in Northern Mindanao is linked to the city by the Davao-Bukidnon Highway.

Climate
Davao City is typhoon-free. The city enjoys a weather that remains balmy all year round. It is characterized by a uniform distribution of rainfall, temperature, humidity, and air pressure.

It has no pronounced wet or dry season. Weather predictability makes it highly conducive to agro-crop production. Temperature ranges from 20 to 32 degrees Celsius and average rainfall is up to 2,000 mm yearly.

Dialects and languages
Bisaya is the most widely spoken language. The Filipino language (Tagalog) comes a close second. English is the medium of instruction in schools and is widely understood and spoken especially in the business community.

Religion
The most dominant group is the Roman Catholic at 83.83%, other Christian groups comprise 15% and the remaining 1.17% belongs to other non-Christian faiths (Islam, Buddhism, etc).

Physical infrastructure
The presence of basic infrastructure within the City such as airport, seaports, roads, bridges, and telecommunications has sustained the economic growth in the last 10 years. Due to the City’s unprecedented growth, a clamor for higher capacity infrastructures resulted to a number of modernization projects now ongoing to meet the demands of the new millennium.

The Davao International Airport is the busiest airport in Southern Philippines. Expansion and modernization began in 1998. Today, the new DIA (opened in December 2003) has begun accommodating wider-bodied jets such as the Boeing 747.

Construction of more roads and bridges are also underway. The construction of the City’s third major road - the Buhangin underpass was completed in the 1st quarter of 2003. A Traffic Management and Computerization Scheme was also implemented. Davao City is ranked no. 5 among cities in Asia with better traffic flow based on vehicles per kilometer of city road.

Presently, there are 2 government seaports (the Sasa Wharf and the Sta. Ana Pier) and 9 privately owned ports. The City Government is currently in the process of taking over the management of the seaports to modernize facilities and expand capacity. In addition, the city has a fish port called the Toril Fish Port Complex to accommodate small and large-scale fishing activities as well as provide among others cold-storage facilities.

Telecommunications
Communication links within the key business areas are adequate. With the deregulation and privatization policies of the Philippine Government, the number of telecommunications player is projected to increase as well as offer affordable telecommunications services to subscribers/clienteles.

Education
The government provides free education at the primary (grade school) and secondary (high school) levels. Government scholars can enjoy free college education in state-run universities such as the University of the Philippines. and the University of SouthEastern Philippines. The literacy rate of the country is 93.9%. Davao City on the other hand has a higher literacy rate at 98.05%.

The City has largely contributed to the country’s ever increasing pool of masters and doctorate degree holders helping the Philippines gained the distinction of having one of the highest numbers of Masters in Business Administration (MBA) graduates in the world.

The City is considered the Center for Learning and Education in the Mindanao Island. Currently, it has 374 elementary schools, 65 secondary schools, and 46 colleges and universities.

Some of the more popular schools found in Davao City are: 1. University of the Philippines - Mindanao 2. Ateneo de Davao University (ADDU) 3. University of Mindanao 4. University of the Immaculate Conception (UIC) 5. San Pedro College 6. Brokenshire College 7. Davao Doctors College 8. University of SouthEastern Philippines 9. Philippine Wowen's College 10.Assumption College of Davao 11. Rizal Memorial Colleges 12. Holy Cross of Davao College 13. St. Peter's College 14. AMA College - Davao

Schools in Davao offer great educational opportunities and would improve the competitiveness of the students.

Medical care
The average life expectancy of Davaoeños is 70 for females and 65 for males. There are about 31 hospitals with a total of 1,763 beds in Davao City. Very affordable medical services are made available to poor residents through the Davao Medical Center, which has the most hospitals beds at 600. On the other hand, hospitals such as the Davao Doctors Hospital, San Pedro Hospital, BrokenShire Memorial Hospital and Davao Medical Center are training hospitals that also offer specialized medical care services. Davao Regional Hospital in the neighboring Tagum City, Davao also offers the same quality specialized physician training and health services.

Psychiatric hospitals, psychotherapy clinics and counselling centers are also found in the city, directed and manned by internationally-trained counselors, psychologists, psychometricians and psychiatrists.

Financial services
Currently, there are around 60 banks (excluding branches), 22 financing companies, and 9 lending firms operating in the city. These can handle financial/monetary transactions from the most basic to the most complicated.

CitiBank which is a foreign subsidiary operates in the city while another foreign bank, HSBC is set to open its doors to the Davao community within the year.

Automated teller machines (ATM) in the city are hooked up to international card networks such as Visa ELECTRON, VISA, MasterCard, Cirrus and Maestro. On the other hand, major business establishments in the city honor local and international credit cards issued by VISA, MasterCard, JCB, Diners Club and American Express.

Foreign relations
The influx of foreign visitors and the presence of expatriates and migrants in the city have prompted the governments of Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia and the United States to open consular offices in the city.

The US Embassy in the Philippines opened a virtual consulate wherein inquiries on visa issuances, foreign relations concerns and travel to the United States can be made in the Internet by e-mail and chat. The virtual consulate website [2] is maintained in coordination with Ateneo de Davao University.

Media
Aside from the 24 national daily newspapers available, Davao City has also 20 local newspapers, 11 broadcast TV stations, 15 AM-band radio stations, and 25 FM-band radio stations. These numbers reflect the extent of press freedom being enjoyed by the print and broadcast media as well as provide wide range of choice for residents and visitors alike.

Security and civil defense
The city government has invested millions of pesos to ensure the security of people living and working in Davao City. Aside from the usual forces of the Philippine National Police, a special military task force has been formed to insulate the city from terrorist attacks and other forms of criminality. The Task Force Davao, as it is named, is affiliated with the Philippine Army and is headed by an army colonel.

The city government also maintains a 24-hour emergency response system patterned that after the 911 in the United States. People can dial the 911 number to report emergencies and criminal incidents.

A curfew is also observed in the city. All business establishments, in particular bars and discos, are mandated by a city ordinance to close down at 2:00 AM. On the other hand, motorcycle drivers with no helmets and motorists with defective lights are not allowed to drive within the city proper or to enter the city, if they come from nearby towns and cities. Regular checkpoints in key parts of Davao City and in the city boundaries are conducted 24 hours to ensure the strict implementation of traffic rules.

Use of fireworks and other similar pyrotechnic materials, as well as smoking, is strictly prohibited in the city. Violators are made to pay hefty fines, perform community service, render jail time or a combination of the three.

FOUR countries in the East Asean Growth Area (Eaga) are studying the feasibility of designating two or more ports in Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia and the Philippines to allow BIMP-Eaga shipping operation.

Romeo Serra, chair of the BIMP-Eaga Business Council (BEBC) said the study will focus on the feasibility of allowing BIMP-Eaga shipping operators to carry cargoes and passengers between the two designated ports on a reciprocal basis.

He added that under the sea transport linkages they will look into establishing cruise-line servicing Eaga points.

The sea transport concern was among the series of concerns discussed during First BIMP-Eaga Transport Ministers Meeting in Bandar Seri Begawa, Brunei Darussalam on June 5.

The ministers also agreed to endorse priority projects for implementation, namely, Muara (Brunei Darussalam) -- Mnumbok (Malaysia) Ro-Ro/Passenger Ferry; Labuan (Malaysia) -- Muara (Brunei Darussalam) Ro-Ro/Passenger Ferry; Brooke's Point (Philippines) -- Kudat (Malaysia) Sea Linkages; Pontianak (Indonesia) -- Kuching (Malaysia) Sea Linkages; Pare-Pare (Indonesia) -- Tarakan (Indonesia), Numukan (Indonesia) -- Tawau (Malaysia) -- Sandakan (Malaysia) Sea Linkages; Makassar (Indonesia) -- Bitung (Indonesia) -- General Santos (Philippines) Sea Linkages; and Port of Glan (Philippines) -- Tahuna (Indonesia) -- Bitung (Indonesia) Sea Linkages.

With regards to the land transport linkages, they agreed to adopt a sub-regional multilateral or bilateral inter-state transport and transit transport agreement in order to facilitate cross-border movement of people and goods.

They also agreed to endorse priority projects for implementation like the establishment of a consortium company of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia in the field of land transportation in order to also facilitate cross-border movement of people and goods, setting up of inland clearance depot for trade and transshipment at Eaga borders, and establishing of inter-city bus express service in Eaga.

As far as air linkages are concerned, the group agreed to adopt sub-regional multilateral agreement on common airport tariffs to be studied by a technical group under the Transport, Infrastructure, and ICT Development cluster.

The cooperation among BIMP-Eaga airlines are encouraged to implement co-terminalization with own stopover and code-sharing arrangements, as well as the cooperation among small airlines to link areas which are not served by the national carriers.

Among the priority projects endorsed for implementation are the establishment of air routes between Davao City (Philippines) -- Kota Kinabalu (Malaysia) -- Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei Darussalam), and the establishment of air routes between Pontianak (Indonesia) -- Kuching (Malaysia) -- Bandar Seri Bengawan (Brunei Darussalam).

Serra said the member countries agreed to request the Asian Developmetn Bank (ADB) and German Technical Cooperation Agency (GTZ) to provide technical and financial assistance packages in order to support the transport development of the sub-region.

The member countries respective transport agencies also agreed to interface and work closely with their respective trade, tourism, and natural resources agencies on the development of sustainable transport services in BIMP-Eaga, Serra added. (PIA/pdbanzon)

DAVAO ORIENTAL -- Expected to spur growth and development in the capital town of Davao Oriental, the Philippine Ports Authority with the help of some lawmakers in the province are pushing for the expansion of the Mati wharf.

The PPA is optimistic that the Mati Wharf expansion project will reap its purpose of boosting the local economy.

The project started April this year, and is bound for completion on 2007.

"It is a P60 million project, covering 120 meters expansion at the right and left wing of the wharf," said Aida Pajo of the Philippine Ports Authority-Davao Oriental.

But the left wing will cover more of the expansion.

The PPA also did not have any qualms in financing the project.

Representative Mayo Almario of the second district of Davao Oriental is just as excited and grateful that the project finally has started.

"All the time spent for follow-ups paid off. I am grateful to PPA administrator Oscar Sevilla for not failing me, for nodding to my woes for this project," Almario said.

Earlier, the lawmaker asked for the compliance from all persons and agencies concerned for the realization of the said project. (dxHM/PIA)

The new Davao City International Airport is now ready for more passengers and larger aircraft, according to the Asian Development Bank, which financed the $128 million state-of-the-art project.

Officially named Francisco Bangoy International Airport, it is now fully operational and is raring to take in more passengers and bigger aircraft, the ADB said.

It has been upgraded and expanded to provide reliable and safe all-weather operations that meet international standards and remove infrastructure bottlenecks that constrained the growth of domestic and international air services, the bank said.

“It will also enhance Davao’s access to nearby markets and improve the overall economic prospects of the Southern Philippines, and could be considered one vital link for the intermodal transport network essential for this area,” it said.

Actual passenger volume at the Davao airport last year surpassed one million domestic passengers flown in by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Asian Spirit out of 14 daily local flights.

International passengers to and from Manado and Singapore also reached almost 25,000.

“But Davao’s spacious and modern terminal building is designed to accommodate much more, and can easily accommodate up to twice its designed minimum passenger capacity of one million passengers,” the bank said.

PTA grounds soon to be an ECOLOGY* park

THREE weeks after the recently concluded 2nd BIMP-Eaga Urban Scout Jamboree, Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte gave marching orders to start the planting activity at the City Government-owned PTA grounds. City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado disclosed this in an interview Friday.

Avisado said the City Engineer's Office (CEO) has already started the plants from different sources in Davao province.

He said some private entities also donated trees for the PTA grounds that will be turned into an ecology park, similar to the Central Park in New York.

"We want to start the planting activity with the least expense," Avisado said.

Among the plants to be planted at the PTA grounds are African tulip and other endemic plants in the province of Davao.

The CEO with the City Environment and Natural Resources Office will be working hand in hand on the project. (BRQ)

Fr. Emeterio E Barcelon (Former Prexy of the Ateneo de Davao University)

THIS Davao-Cagayan Highway is a fascinating mirror of the progress of Mindanao. The bus ride starts from Davao, a prosperous oasis of safety in Mindanao or for that matter for all of the country. A lady physician, an OB-GYNE specialist commented recently that she felt safe to answer a birthing call whether it was at midnight or three in the morning, even if she has to stop by a gasoline station. The Public High School’s afternoon session is let out after dark without the parents worrying about their girls and boys walking home or riding a jeepney.

I know that the mayor urges drug pushers and snatchers to move out of his city. He also gives them two chances before he uses tactics also used by American mayors who inspect for fire violations movie houses that show indecent films every week until they cooperate. The object is to give the people safety. Without peace and order there can be no progress. The resulting prosperity is obvious in Davao where safety is assured.

The first heavily populated district out of the center of town is Calinan famous for its juicy pomelos and aromatic and bitter durian, which Davaoeños still prefer, called the Davao Selection in contrast to the Thai Montong other more meaty and sweeter durians.

From Calinan and its fertile farms starts the climb to the mountain. If the old movie exclaimed "How green is my valley?" the rider must exclaim "How green are my mountains?" at this time of the year. Marahan reaches about 5,000 feet, same as Baguio. Although there are many Baguio pines in the area they do not produce cones with seeds. That is the reason many prefer the Carribean pine which has only two strands instead of three in each leaf bundle. Once in Marahan, out of nowhere appear Nanay Soling Duterte’s three floors concrete training center on a peak. It is said to be a gift of the Sultan of Brunei to Davao. This is almost two hours by bus from the center. Davao City is almost as big as the province of Bulacan. From here there are two new roads that wind down to the plains of Cotabato. The highway crosses through a section of Cotabato and turns back to Davao city jurisdiction.

Here in Marahan, Larry Suarez has a small farm that raises green peppers into which you can sink your teeth like an apple. He also once had six varieties of strawberries that peeked out of nodes of five-foot bamboo poles. But he now concentrates on the Baguio Haranoka variety because of its aroma and sweetness, even though they are only medium-sized. Farther up there is also sitio Epol that grows strawberries and flowers for sale. This is the only place where the traveler can see pink talampunay with numerous flowers hanging down the tree. Sale of flowers and vegetables thrive on this section of the highway. After Marahan is Buda, not named after the enlightened teacher, but simply the Bukidnon Davao border. Beyond Buda is Sinuda where Datu Gawilan used to be the chief of the Matigsalog, who are taller and lighter complexioned than the Binukid tribesmen of the area.

In the late l970s, when there were still missing bridges, vehicles had to wade through rivers. At the time Ateneo De Davao established the first hectare of wet paddy rice in the area. Now there are over two hundred hectares of rice fields. At one celebration a young damsel was asked why she was hurrying home at two in the afternoon. Her answer was because she wanted to return her dress to its owner so she could also join the celebration. A number of the natives at the time had scabies, for which Dra. Trining de La Paz’ asked the natives to dig shallow water wells and gave them soap. It solved the problem. (To be continued.) < emeterio_barcelon@yahoo.com>

When I saw the heading of Fr. Emeterio Barcelon's column, I thought he was talking about the Pan-Philippine Highway from Davao to Tuguegarao, Cagayan. Turned out he was talking about the highway from Davao to CDO, actually half-way only. He stopped in the hinterland of Bukidnon.

The company that introduced the word ‘malling’ to the vocabulary of Filipinos broke its own record with the opening of its 25th mall built at a cost of P6.5 billion

In a press conference Saturday, Hans Sy, president of SM Prime Holding Inc. said they have no second thoughts in pouring investment in the retail market as they are confident that the economy will get better with the ballooning Overseas Filipino Workers remittance and the rapidly growing call centers across the country.

Asked what their plans are for SM City Davao, Hans Sy said, “you are in for major surprises,” but he refused to elaborate what innovations the company will introduce here.

“We are a nation of mall-lovers with millions flocking to our air-conditioned malls daily and more on weekends,” he said, adding “we have just opened SM Clark last week and within the year we will be opening two more – SM Supercenter Pasig and SM City Lipa. The SM North Edsa Annex Expansion is also scheduled to open in July 2006.”

yup. the fenced in area is still owned by SM. its called the FDS or Future Development Site. that is where the rumored expansion is going to take place.

behind that FDS is the lot still owned by DMCI. i heard that they are planning to put up low to medium rise first class condos and townhouses there. but i think matagal pa yun kasi they are also developing a first class subdivision along maa road, ala las terrasas...

SM also bought a piece of land in bajada, near the redeptorist church. it is rumored to be a site of a SM Hypermart.

Davao City (14 June) — Here comes Muzika del Sur, a Davao-based half-hour cable television show that features the best of Mindanao’s music artistry, which will mark its maiden telecast on various cable channels in different Mindanao cities this June 15.

“It will showcase the vibrant Mindanao music scene like concerts, performances, features on Mindanao-born artists who made it big in the national scene, music videos of homegrown artists.” Said Dax Cañedo, executive producer of the show.

Cañedo said that it is high time that Mindanao particularly its music talent must be exposed to the public. Led by creative director Niño Flores of the Alchemy of Vision and Lights film and television productions, the show aims to be a groundbreaking aural and visual event in regional television with concepts aimed at highlighting the fiesta-like musical and artistic atmosphere in Mindanao.

“Sabi nila maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga cannon at mga baril na nagpuputukan, hindi totoo yan, maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga tugtog ng reggae, ska, rock, ethnic, hip-hop, acoustic, pop at iba pang musika na umaalingawngaw sa ating mga tenga, Nino Flores the show’s creative force said.

Proof of the pudding is the show’s first episode which features the Mix music fest held at the Wheels and More drive compound. The music fest organized by 105.9 Mix FM was graced by a total of 21 bands with performances that ranged from hardcore-rock to a Michael Buble-inspired pop-standard act.

Davaoena beauty Vanessa Yap and southern rocker Carlos Castaños hosts the show. Davao’s music show Durian jam will also be featured as a segment.

“This is a great show for Mindanao musicians, to be able to reach out to a wider audience. ”Said Wardy Puyod, bass guitarist of the Davaoeño rock band Lizard chips and co-producer of Durian Jam.

A Gensan band can be seen and heard in Cagayan de Oro and vice-versa, Davao bands who are so talented can now also be seen and heard across Mindanao added Puyod.

Mindanao’s particularly Davao has been feeling a musical renaissance of some sorts as local homegrown bands like Isla Era, Back by Midnite, Thavawenyoz and Sidecrash are attempting to invade the national music scene. A territory that have already been conquered by the likes of Joey Ayala, Free Style, South Border and Wardy Puyod’s high school classmate Juris Fernandez of the chart-topping MYMP.

“The musical dynamism here in Mindanao is the reason why we have produced this show.” said Cañedo.

The show will be shown every Thursady 10 pm, Saturdays and Tuesdays every 10:30 p.m. The show will be aired on Skycable Davao channel 28,Tagum channel 15, Zamboanga channel 15, General Santos channel 17, Home Channel Network 35, Digos Cable channel 11 and Parasat Cagayan de Oro channel 24. (AVL)

“I hold it as an article of faith in government that there can never be development and progress in any city or province in the country, unless there is stability, unless there is peace and order”.

Such a statement can only come from the man who is leading Davao City’s transformation from an urban laboratory of guerilla warfare in the early 80’s to the Most Competitive Metro City in the Philippines today – Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Roa Duterte – a no-nonsense leader who means what he says. Regularly on TV, he calmly warns criminals not to dare enter the city or suffer the consequences.

In his first term as elected Mayor (1988-1992), he built a foundation of peace and order. Streets were again literally and figuratively clean. Being a staunch advocate of stability, confidence was regained. The good news about Davao’s rebirth spread like wildfire and people from all sectors of the society rallied behind a leader they had hoped for and got.

Reelected for a second term (1992-1995), Duterte established clear development directions and mobilized all sectors of the society. He initiated the “Invest in Davao” project and signed in 1994 the very first investment incentive code by a local government unit (LGU) in the Philippines resulting in a dramatic change of the city’s economic landscape.

Winning unopposed in his bid for a third term (1995-1998), the Mayor continued using tried and tested formulas in running the affairs of the city and the international and national awards and recognitions came aplenty. In 1996, he signed the Women’s Development Code of Davao City – another first from a LGU.

Having completed the maximum three successive full terms as Mayor, he ran for and was elected representative (1998-2001) to the 11th Congress of the Philippines.

Being known and loved for as a man of action who is most adept in executing plans rather than serving as a legislator, Duterte was elected again as Mayor (2001-2004). In September 2001, barely a few months after inauguration, he established the 911 – Central Communications and Emergency Response Center which was patterned after the 911 emergency response mechanisms of the USA and Canada. This project is being run 24/7 in partnership with the Davao Light and Power Company.

Today, Mayor Duterte is serving his fifth term (2004-2007) at City Hall and it seems that majority of his constituents are poised to support him for another term starting 2007 even if there is this big possibility that he might run unopposed in the next elections.

Credit it to a performance that made a big difference in the lives of the Davaoeños. Credit it to the hand that made Davao as one of the leading metro cities in the Philippines. Credit it to a strong stance against crime, drugs, and lawlessness.

If there is one particular “artist” this website must feature extensively, it would be Kublai Millan. This artistic genius has won various national and regional awards and recognitions in the field of visual arts which are too numerous to mention. Yet, the man needs no resume to sell his craft. His artworks do not just speak for themselves. They scream of passion. They captivate the senses. They defy the odds.

The artist has done thousands of artworks in almost every type of medium available. From photography, to painting, to wire-framed paper sculptures, and to every imaginable and unimaginable works of art, even to turning junk and garbage into art objects that command appreciation instead of being dumped as most everybody would, this one particular artist leaves no stone unturned as he sees art in everything. The everyday things that are usually taken for granted, Kublai sees art in them. And this is what sets him apart from the rest.

At 31, Kublai has already immortalized himself through his awe-inspiring and imposingly larger than life sculptures displayed in significant places in Mindanao. He is the artist behind the giant durian at the Davao International Airport. He just finished a 50-foot risen Christ sculpture in the largest church in Mindanao in Tagum City. He has also made kampilan, a sword sculpture of the same towering height (50 feet) at Sultan Kudarat. The artist has also revealed a just concluded landmark sculptures in Lanao and an ongoing project in Kapatagan, Davao del Sur which the artist quips is nothing short of grand with the cost running to millions already.

Having marveled at thousands of his artworks displayed in and out of the family-run hotel called Ponce Suites (at Doña Vicenta Village in Davao City), the first question that came to mind was “Does the artist ever find time to sleep at all?”

Kublai’s patience and knock for intricate details in his sculptures are impressive to say the least. The graceful sway of the eagles’ feathers as if touched by wind, the elaborate rendition of every single leaf and flower as if they were bursting with life , even the vivid facial expressions of his subjects never fail to evoke the right emotion. Kublai has made the difficult look easy.

And the man is not letting up. I guess sleep and leisure can come later. Not just yet. “I want to do more while I am still young. The possibilities seem endless while you are young” Kublai stated. “There were talks and proposals for me to create sculptures in strategic places in the city to showcase Davao as a city of arts, of sculptures, but nothing is final yet. I guess what holds us back is the budget. Most of the works I’ve done lately were financed by private individuals. The durian you see at the Davao International airport was funded by Mr. Bobby Soriano intended as a gift for his mother who unfortunately died a week before the airport inauguration. The grand project I’m doing in Mt. Apo, in Kapatagan, is being funded by an individual who is as crazy as me when it comes to arts. And while I’m at it, I am also doing the finishing touches here (referring to the 4th floor of Ponce Suites), it will be an alternative bar where intellectuals, musicians, writers, and artists alike can converge” Kublai added.

He toured us around the place proudly inviting us to get a feel of one of the hanging nooks in the bar where one will get a panoramic view of nearby surroundings as well as everything under one’s feet. Lastly, Kublai talked about a vanishing culture in Mindanao that he would like to preserve through his sculptures. Perhaps, that explains the burning passion to do more. And looking at the rate Kublai is molding his art in Mindanao, I guess it won’t be long for the man to artistically showcase a culture that is distinctly carved and molded for the island’s glory in the not so distant future. (Ivan C. Cortez –DCIPC)

There is no other hotel in the world like Ponce Suites. It is an art gallery and hotel rolled into one.

This 30-room 4-storey hotel is hard to miss owing to a number of giant sculptures that surround it. We are not just talking here of mere sculptures as the ones you will see in this hotel are nothing short of grand. Yet these heart-stopping larger than life masterpieces are just samples of what you will experience once you decide to enter the lobby and begin your art expedition on each floor.

A walk through the hallways, corners, staircases and function rooms of Ponce Suites is an incomparable visual feast. The hotel has become Kublai Millan’s virtual gallery featuring more than a thousand masterpieces that filled every nook and cranny. Even the ceilings and bathrooms are not spared to host the works of this art genius.

The hotel is literally filled with Kublai’s paintings and artworks depicting every facet of life rendered in various dimensions and media, exclusively or otherwise mixed. None is ever done haphazardly for the sake of quantity. Each piece invites time for examination. Each piece evokes emotion. And in between each step in the hallway seems like eternity as you would not let one piece escape your scrutiny and appreciation for details as well as the message it brings. Even the crawling papier mache ant workers, all 365 of them on the ceiling are difficult to ignore as they were made about a foot long each.

The hotel could probably enter the Guinness Book of World records as the “hotel with the most number of artworks by a single artist per square meter of area”

Ponce Suites is no doubt synonymous to arts and culture and this trademark has made it the favorite venue of non-government organizations for meetings, seminars, conferences and other gatherings.

The roof deck of the hotel is now being transformed into a bar for artists and intellectuals. The bar will offer among others a vegetarian menu, an array of tea concoctions, and hanging nooks where one can have a panoramic view of the nearby surroundings as well as every single thing situated 50 feet under one’s feet. (by Ivan C. Cortez of DCIPC)

Note: Ponce Suites is located at the corners of Roads 3 and 4, Doña Vicenta Village II, Bajada, Davao City
