Body Talk with the Slimmers beauties
FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo

Twenty-five bodies to-die-for, “sculpted” by Slimmers World, paraded before the audience-packed PICC Plenary Hall last Sunday, May 25, and a battery of judges that included a Miss Universe (Gloria Diaz, 1969), 2006 Miss Tourism Queen Justine Gabionza and three former Bb. Pilipinas (Maricar Tolosa, Karen Agustin and Miriam Quiambao). They all looked like winners, but only two went home with the titles at stake: Pearl Kellie, representing Slimmers Adriatico, as Miss Bikini Philippines-International (who will compete in the 2008 Miss Bikini International with more than 50 other “beautiful bodies” in China in November) and Maria Elena “Yen” Lopena, representing Slimmers SM City, as Miss Bikini Philippines-World (who will compete in the 2008 Miss Bikini World also with more than 50 hopefuls somewhere in Europe in August).

Both hail from Davao. Pearl, who turned 15 last May 3 (Taurus), stands 5’8”, weighs 121 lbs., and measures 33-25-34. Still in high school, she is half-Australian (her dad is from Adelaide) and half-Filipina (mom is from Zamboanga), born in Indonesia and spent three years in Australia before settling down in the Philippines.

“I go where my parents’ work brought us,” said Pearl. “They did mission work, so we moved from one place to another. Our family is non-denominational. I have one older sister and one younger sister, and an older half-sister on my mom’s side. My parents have separated. I chose to be with my mom while my dad has stayed put in Australia.”

Yen, who’s turning 21 on June 16 (Gemini), stands 5’6”, weighs 116 lbs., and measures 31-24-35. A Hotel & Restaurant Management (HRM) graduate from the Philippine College of Technology (Davao), she’s on leave from her work as beverage attendant at Marco Polo Hotel in Davao City. She has competed in local beauty contests and Miss Bikini is her first national competition. She’s one of six siblings (one sister works in a cruise ship and another at the MGM Hotel in Macau).

How did you prepare for the contest?

Pearl: We had to go on a diet, exercise and lose a bit of weight. We were exposed to the public to train us on social graces. For one month before the contest, I had to work out double time to tone my muscles, and to trim my thighs and my abs. It helps that I am athletic. I play soccer, basketball and a little tennis.

Yen: My friends in Davao, and Marco Polo general manager John Nuñez, helped me prepare before I flew to Manila for the competition, especially with the things that I needed. As soon as I arrived in Manila, I started working out and stuck to a healthy diet.

What sort of diet did you have before Slimmers?

Pearl: At our home in Davao, I cook; I love to eat. During the contest, I stayed in a house with other candidates and there was a nutritionist looking after us. All our meals were calculated; each of us was limited to 1,200 calories per meal which consisted of either brown rice or whole-wheat bread, vegetables and fruits. As a winner, I have to watch my diet closely in preparation for the international competition.

Yen: I’m lucky because my metabolism is fast so I don’t really have to go on a strict diet. I don’t gain weight easily. The Slimmers took care of us with the treatments and a balanced diet, good for 1,200 calories per meal. For breakfast, we usually have oatmeal; for lunch, half cup of brown rice and mostly vegetables, chicken or fish; and for dinner, light na lang, except when we had rehearsals because we had to burn carbo.

....
Congratulations !!!

International board to help Davao renew ties with the world
Sunstar.com.ph

DAVAO City is set to renew its ties with some cities in the Philippines and in other countries with the approval of the International Relations Board, a body composed of government and private agencies mostly dealing with foreign trade, relations, and investment.

"We hope that with the approval of the International Relations Group we will now have a body that will intently look into the status of our existing sisterhood agreement and turn them into economic advantages for the city," Councilor Rachel Zozobrado said.

The resolution was approved by the City Council last week and is just awaiting the signature of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for finalization.

Zozobrado, who is chair of the City Council international relations committee, said Davao City has entered into several sisterhood agreements with various national and international cities but not too many of these agreements have succeeded in what both cities want to achieve.

Davao City Investment Promotion Center (DCIPC) chief Roberto Teo said Davao has existing agreements with Nanning City of China and Republic of Palau.

These are only among the latest twinning pacts the city has entered into after the enactment of City Ordinance 0297-06 or the Davao Sister Cities Program.

"There is also a sisterhood agreement with Honolulu, Hawaii which was signed last 2004 and a lot of other twinning agreements which are set to expire every five years unless terminated," Teo added.

"We have a lot to do in terms of really exploring the opportunities that these sisterhood agreements can offer the city in terms of economic development," Zozobrado said.

Depending on the terms of the pacts, she said, Davao can explore economic activities that will lead to more jobs and income to the Dabawenyos.

Zozobrado said the membership of the DCIPC to the board will ensure that the city can explore investment opportunities with the cities we have sisterhood agreements with considering that the Center is already doing this prior to the formation of the Board.

However, she said, there are various aspects in twinning pacts including tourism and other economic and social opportunities which the Board can take care of as a body.

Davao may be in the forefront of Mindanao's (and the Philippines') economic development but there is a need to sustain and strengthen existing and proposed sisterhood agreements if we are to move forward, she said.

Aside from the DCIPC, the International Relations Board is composed of the Office of the City Mayor as chair, the different council committees including Tourism, Trade and Industry, Information, Communication and Technology, City Planning, City Tourism Council, City Information Office, City Agriculturist, Tesda, Dost director and DTI City director.

Kadayawan 2008, a celebration of abundance
by Prix D Banzon
PIA

Davao City (30 May) -- The Kadayawan Festival of Davao City this August will be a celebration of abundance.

Art Boncato, chair of the committee on publicity and media of the Kadayawan festivities this year during the Club 888 Forum of the Marco Polo Hotel on Wednesday stressed that as Davao celebrates its bounty there is a need to value the earth, the land, the natural resources and harvest.

He said it will be a grand celebration but will not commercialize the event saying that it is quite challenging but the tourism sector expresses interest in the Kadayawan Festival.

He explained that their objective is to bring in more guests and the event is open to everyone and to tourists both domestic and international.

The festival is a celebration for the Dabawenyos but holding it will not also block people people from other places to celebrate with us, he said.

According to Boncato, the tourism players especially the airline and hotel industries already made some offerings by reducing the rates and many already had availed of the zero ticket offered by airline companies.

He said the celebration is also to promote Davao City all over and direct flights are already open to other countries like HongKong and Singapore of which we have to take advantage of this.

"Many are looking at the market and still they do not know what to do about the access," he said.

He said now that the access is offered to us then we have to support it.

Boncato also said that during the festivities, the airport will be among their concern where collaterals will be supplied at the terminals.

He further said that they plan to put up billboards in 13 airports nationwide in key cities of the Philippines about Kadayawan Festival where Mayor Rodrigo Duterte endorses the festivities and invite tourists to celebrate with the Dabawenyos in a city that is a must see destination of the country.

"The plans are being finalized and if they get the approval then the billboards will speak of Davao City and the Kadayawan Festival," he said. (PIA)

Goys, please help me analyze this.

Kuya Jech and I had a long chat last night.

Yung project daw ng Robinsons to develop the Lapanday property (this is out in the news already) is set to be handled by Jech's division, the Highrise Buildings Division (tama diba Jech?). Pero yung nasa local news is ang project will be residential development. If that is so, then bakit hindi Robinsons Homes (the division that handles horizontal residential development) ang naghandle?

Isip isip...

Btw, saan ba yung lapanday property na yan?

Do we have a safe place where tourists can watch the Kadayawan parade without having to worry about getting nabbed by somebody else? Something similar to the Annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California wherein people pay for tickets to get a seat on the bleachers placed on the side of the parade route.

Residential condos are residential projects as the name suggests ...:)

The property, if my memory serves me right, is in the concession area of the Lorenzos in Tigatto or maybe a little farther west from Tigatto to Mandug. If I remember it right a big portion of the banana plantation (all of 300 hectares!!) was earmarked for a special economic zone during the Ramos incumbency but the plan never left the backburner. I believe this planned development of 12 hectares is part of the shelved economic zone project of Ladeco.

It won't be a surprise that they'd build this type of development in Tigatto which as of the time being is home to both low and upscale residential subdivisions. Maybe they're going to build a satellite city in that area. Who knows? (in the cabinet!))

We are all from mindanao and We are all Filipinos. no need to fight with each other cause that wont benefit both cities in terms of progress and especially in terms of investments. What we should do here is to help each other and not fight with each other. enough of this crab-filipino-mentality thingy. We are All filipinos. And we were never enemies. we all share the same blood that runs through our arteries and veins--Filipino (with emphasis on Mindanaoan) blood.

Hope my message is clear to everyone. Let us all Stop bickering and start working as One Mindanao. cause the way i see it, if only we--the people and gov't of Metro Davao and CDO, will work together then we can do great and mighty things. its annoying the fact some people is banking on investments to up the ante and tell us davao a has been. illogical for city per city stats. davao city investments are for clear development of a city that will definitiely change urban lfe and landscape. and that claim is clean. these are billions of pesos worth that will improve the skyline. is that happening in them. are we seeing talls when all their investment projects are done? some of their investments are mere credit grabs from other areas. banking on job creations for the billion dollar project that has "not" taken off. statwise, there is not much difference with employmwnt rate between cities considering davao has over a million pop. and by real value of percentrate, there are more jobs in davao for 1.2 million people

Finally mindanao is getting a bulk of the philippine investments and that just proves that development is finally soaring in mindanao shores! and i cant wait for the next big thing to happen.

Well said Doc.

I remember a statement coming from then mayor (now vice-mayor) that Davao would soon be surpassed by his city. Five years have passed since and has his statement been realized?

With all the investments deluging our city at present, I think then mayor (now vice-mayor) has no other choice but to eat his own words.

(PIA)
I'm sure they'll recover from what they have done last Kadayawan.. It's just a pain!!

Additional P200-M infra
projects in Davao: Nograles

Residents of Davao City can expect to see more infrastructure projects within the coming weeks. This was revealed yesterday when the Office of Speaker Prospero C. Nograles disclosed that an additional P200 million worth of infrastructure projects have been alloted for the first district of Davao City. Lawyer Karlo Nograles, the office’s chief-of-staff, said that this was the biggest fund allocation made so far by Speaker Nograles since the congressman assumed the fourth highest positioning government.

Out of the total budget, P20 million is being allocated for the construction of canal cover and park over the open canal along Roxas Avenue. “This has been a long-time vision of the Speaker, to complete the development of that park along Roxas boulevard,” said the chief-of-staff. Another P20 million has been allocated for the repair and rehabilitation of the Hall of Justice. “We are delivering on our promise to improve our Hall of Justice and make it more presentable to all those who come here,” the younger Nograles said.

Other projects in the budget include repair of the S.I.R. Fire Station (P1.5 million); Completion of the GSIS Fire Station (P2.5 million); completion of the Talomo Police Station (P3 million); Completion of the barangay hall at Matina Crossing (P3 million); and Completion of the Sta. Ana Fire Station (P10 million).

Road concreting projects have also been allocated for the following barangays: Brgy. Bucana 76-A (P15 million); Brgy. 19-B (P10 million); Talomo (P5 million); Catalunan Pequeno (P10 million); Matina Crossing (P10 million); Matina Aplaya (P10 million); Dumoy (P10 million ); Baliok (P10 million); Bago Aplaya (P5.0M); Bago Gallera (P5 million); Maa (P10 million); Langub (P10 million); Magtuod (P10 million); Matina Pangi (P10 million); and Catalunan Grande (P10 million). With this latest announcement, Atty. Nograles claims that for the mid-year of 2008 alone the total budget released by the speaker for the first district of Davao City has already reached over P400 million.

Do we have a safe place where tourists can watch the Kadayawan parade without having to worry about getting nabbed by somebody else? Something similar to the Annual Rose Bowl Parade in Pasadena, California wherein people pay for tickets to get a seat on the bleachers placed on the side of the parade route.

for years never heard someone nabbed in the Indak-Indak ,police presence is very visble in every corner of the streets & not to mention the plain clothes one ,it's not a big problem but i guess the lacked of shelter & toilet facilities are the real problem.

International board to help Davao renew ties with the world

Philippines to open 8 more airports by 2010
Thursday, May 29MANILA, Philippines- The government will be opening eight more international airports by 2010 in anticipation of the growing passenger traffic to the country, the Transportation Department said Thursday.

“By 2010 the Philippines will have [more] airports of international standards to ease traffic and reduce business cost," Transportation and Communications Secretary Leandro Mendoza said during the opening of the two-day Expo on International Transportation and Logistics held at the World Trade Center.

Mendoza said that this year alone three airports will be open soon and these are the controversial Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal 3, the Clark or Diosdado Macapagal International Airport, and the Buswanga airport scheduled to be operational in November.

For 2009, Mendoza said they are looking at opening the Davao-Iloilo terminal, Silay-Bacolod airport, the Laguindingan airport and the the Panglaw airports in Bohol.

Negotiations for the opening of the Zamboanga airport is also ongoing, Mendoza said.

“We expect traffic to double in particular the tourists arrivals" the Transport Secretary said, adding that this will help decongest the country's few airports as passenger traffic continues to grow.

Based on the records of the Civil Aeronautics Board, a total of 11.24 million passengers inbound and outbound were recorded last year, an increase of 11 percent from the 10.13 million posted in 2006.

For 2007, the country’s domestic load factor was placed at 78 percent up from 73 percent in 2006. - GMANews.TV

Hahahaha. then let the figure speak for themselves. Anyway, im not acting as if im all saint and holy here. nor was i clean. all im saying is that i had enough of all this bickering and stuff. why cant we just work with each other eh? and another thing, what can we get if we all continue this nonsense quarrel about petty points. so they have hanjin, and we got ayala and the condos. but Isn't that great? isn't that a good thing? Finally mindanao is getting a bulk of the philippine investments and that just proves that development is finally soaring in mindanao shores! and i cant wait for the next big thing to happen.

If only them residents in that city would stop bashing Davao, we know very well how, at countless opportunities, they have put Davao and Davaoenos down out in the open. It's pathetic how this is carrying on, and Davaoenos are supposed to be stoic about the whole episode even as it is happening. Well, am for one not a masochist, thus the cheering and egging at our brave Davaoenos for possessing the spirit. yeah!:cheers:

Japanese BPO to expand here, eyes wider English-speaking market

A Japanese business process outsourcing (BPO) firm is investing P120 million in the country to finance the expansion of its local partner, Logicall, Inc.

Transcosmos, Inc., one of the biggest call centers in Japan with 22 offices and over 20,000 employees, merged with the mid-sized call center last month to reach a wider English-speaking market.

Kenji Obata, who now sits as vice-president of the Transcosmos-Logicall merger, said the Japanese firm had spoken with more than 20 companies and even considered taking the business to India before deciding to partner with LogiCall.

"We needed a partner who has an identical sense of values and mentality to be aggressive in entering the English-speaking market. Second, the equipment and facility that Transcosmos has is almost identical to the equipment and facility that Logicall is using," Mr. Obata said.

Logicall is a three-year old BPO with 300 seats at its lone office along Chino Roces Ave. in Makati City.

Logicall Executive Director Archie C. Rodriguez said the company hopes to double capacity by yearend and keep the organization growing.

The company hopes to have 3,000 seats by 2011. "We’re looking at having as many as 6,000 to 8,000 employees," he said.

He added that the merged BPO should start reaping $20 million in revenues annually by then.

Logicall is looking for new locations where it can expand in Metro Manila, while key cities like Cebu, Davao and Bacolod will be explored two years from now.

Like other BPO companies, Transcosmos-Logicall expects the local industry to continue growing.

The government earlier said the sector expects to yield $13 billion worth of revenues by 2010.

"The Philippines has a bright future in the BPO industry. There are also BPOs in Australia and India, but the trend now is that they come to the Philippines," Mr. Obata said. —?Anna Barbara L. Lorenzo

Dinagyang and Ilonggo products will be going to Davao on 11 - 13 July 2008 for a tourism and trade mission. They are to promote the ILO-DVO direct flights of CebuPacific. This is part in creating and enticing Davaoeños to go to Iloilo not just as a gateway to Boracay but a destination as well. As well as creating trade between these 2 cities. :okay:

Regarding that article...sus, pataka kaayo ang proofreader nila. Asa man ila nga Philippine Geography katong Grade 4? :D

for years never heard someone nabbed in the Indak-Indak ,police presence is very visble in every corner of the streets & not to mention the plain clothes one ,it's not a big problem but i guess the lacked of shelter & toilet facilities are the real problem.

i agree w/ peng MP have the best place to view for the event

Thanks. Maybe in the future, the kadayawan parades should be more spectator-friendly...that is, with more shelter or seats, portable or designated toilet facilities (even for a fee). More people on the streets would mean more business. But with Davao's credibility with peace and order, I believe and trust that the safety of the spectators will be assured.

This is indeed a good opportunity. But we can no longer offer any space within the existing NCCC Mall because part of our agreement with Western Wats is not to accept any other call center facility within the building. Let's just see how mall operators would react to this soaring demand for spaces. :)

They bashed Davao like there was no tomorrow. Whatever Davao did to them to get that kind of treatment. And now that things are back in order for Davao (as the first choice Mindanao destination), they seem unable to accept that what they had foreseen to happen are actually backfiring on them. Ahhhhh, I am almost tempted to call it sweet revenge. But I'd rather stick to logic.

Supposedly.

But I believe the issue of ownership and/or possession over the parcels of land between UP and the settlers is still pending before the court.

^^I agree to that sir.I am happy to have joined SSC in the mild booming days of Davao (as read from previous article), wherein big projects come to our city. Its only described "mild", what more if the National Economy would be better, the boom will be full swing for that matter.

I have always believed that the boom days experienced by Davao in the 90s would have a revival. I think those days are back. And it does not matter if Davao took more than a decade to recover. What is more important is the here and now, so to speak.

In between thos years, I have heard that Ayala backed out from our fence again due to bribery (i dont want to bring vibes here), I just want to confirm if this was true? late last year I was shocked to hear that Ayalas are coming to Davao, alongside Filinvest (they came first), and DM Consunji (Davao pioneering). I would just like to confirm if this rumor was true?

Certainly, ok lang kung wala, I have heard it from the brother of a Marketing Team of Ayala scouting in Davao at that time. (again I dont want us to be negative here). But anyways, AYALA is here to stay, good they have a strong and steady partnership with the FLOIRENDOS plus ROBINSON Cybergate as a additional premium. hehehhee.

recently completed projects like Eco 4000 condominiums and damosa IT park are not included in this list, but still, the list is a sure proof that davao is doing away with agricultural and industrial investments this year in exchange of urban type of investments.

OT: @ibex... may bagong hi res ang google, kita na ang other urban centers ng davao city (toril, calinan, mintal) and also some part of bukidnon.

i just can't believe that the whole urban stretch of toril-ulas-matina-downtown-bajada-lanang-sasa-panacan-tibungco (32 kilometers) is equivalent (more or less) to the malaybalay-valencia cities stretch. i just realized my daily travel from home to damosa area is equivalent to don carlos-valencia city travel. vast davao, very vast.

hey goys! speaking of crediblity of our forumers, a forumer will be featured in the Mabuhay Magazine June 2008 ! Congrats! btw hulaan nyo kung sino :colgate:

My name flies around the world via PAL Mabuhay Magazine in June.

Part of my family's Mabuhay Magazine collectionI received confirmation Tuesday, 13 May 2008, that a story on the origins of the Waling-waling which I wrote will be featured in the June 2008 issue of Mabuhay Magazine, the inflight travel and leisure publication of Philippine Airlines. Miss Ira of Eastgate Publishing, the official publisher of Mabuhay, told me on Tuesday via E-mail that the June 2008 issue of the magazine is already being printed in Hong Kong and will be ready for release on the first day of June. That piece of good news got me all giddy and excited not so much because of the check (which will contain something nowhere near substantial) but because I have never thought that I will find my name in a magazine of which my family and I have been avid collectors for years.

The June 2008 issue of Mabuhay Magazine will center on Davao as its main feature, and knowing that my story is part of it makes me feel incredibly thankful and blessed.

The story, “The Legend of the Queen Orchid” (alternatively, “The Legend of the Waling-Waling” or plainly, “Waling”), an original legend I wrote in 1998, is part of a collection of writings which I uploaded to my websites some 10 years ago. I remember back in my college days, way before “blogging” made its way to Netizen parlance, I created websites on Geocities and Fortunecity (with versions in English and Bisaya), which were free web-hosting sites that provided free web space (something like 15MB—you got that right!—back in the day) and TONS of ads.

MANILA, Philippines- The government will be opening eight more international airports by 2010 in anticipation of the growing passenger traffic to the country, the Transportation Department said Thursday.

MANILA, Philippines- The government will be opening eight more international airports by 2010 in anticipation of the growing passenger traffic to the country, the Transportation Department said Thursday.

You got it all wrong.

The discussion was about Ayala initially backing out from Davao because of some local officials (councilors to be exact). But no need to fret now because Ayala came back after realizing that Davao is the best place to do business in Mindanao. The topic of the discussion that you were reacting to is moot and academic. Napagusapan lang, kumbaga.

well now i believed what @Bagani said before that the San Mig Brewery was not an environment issue it's a political one!

San Miguel Brewery? More environmental than political. The site that San Miguel intended to build its brewery on sits on an aquifer. Political, maybe because kaya nilang palusutin kung... alam nyo na. That I cannot confirm. But the environmental reason, I heard it straight from one of the councilors years ago in an informal conversation at Casa Leticia.

Artica Dome? POLITICAL. Very political. This, I can confirm. The late Dr. Rey Punongbayan of Phivolcs ang nagkwento sa akin when I asked him about it. His words: Nagpagamit sa politiko ang MGB (Mines and Geosciences Bureau). Their technical people were used by the camp of Digong to "deceive" the public that Artica sits or is located near a fault line. According to Dr. Rey and to the publicly available geo-hazard maps, FABRICATED info. He may be wrong, but I don't think so.

Opening of Davao bridge expected to ease traffic
By SARAH JANE R. HILOMEN

DAVAO CITY — The Department of Public Works and Highways Regional Office 11 (DPWH) announced that the Gov. Generoso Bridge 1 in Bankerohan, this city, will be passable before regular classes resume in June.

Jerome dela Rosa, DPWH Region 11 director, said that the bridge is now 97 percent complete and will reach 100 percent completion by the second week of June.

The completion of the bridge is also expected to help ease the traffic problems in Metropolitan Davao, the DPWH regional director said.

The improved traffic situation will also improve the distribution of prime commodities and other products, thus also benefiting the trading and transport sector.

Dela Rosa said all residents and businessmen in Davao City will directly benefit from the completion of the bridge.

"The bridge is now substantially complete and we have reached the finishing stage of the project, which includes curing and housekeeping," he said.

The newly constructed R206.6 million bridge has a carrying capacity of 33 tons and has a life span of 50 years. Dela Rosa assured the public that the bridge is permanent with a strong base of about 50-60 meters deep. It was slated to be completed within 140 calendar days.

The actual construction started last February 8 and was supposed to be finished by August. However, Dela Rosa said that the project was fast-tracked as ordered by President Gloria Arroyo.

"With the President’s order, we fast-tracked the construction of the bridge, with workers working 16 hours a day," he said.

Marionito dela Cruz, project manager of Ciriaco Construction, the contractor, also expressed confidence that the bridge will serve its purpose for a long time. Ciriaco construction has already worked on various national government infrastructure projects usually in Luzon. The bridge is its first project in Davao.

Meanwhile, Dela Rosa also said that the DPWH 11 has already coordinated with the local officials of Davao for the relocation of displaced settlers when the bridge collapsed in April last year and the ejection of those currently living near the bridge. "We have sought the assistance of our local government to find a relocation site for informal settlers who were displaced and even those who are still houses near the bridge," he said.

Dela Rosa also said that President Arroyo is expected to lead the inauguration of the bridge.
