Davao to be a center for outsourcing companies
06/04/2008 | 10:40 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Davao City, the Philippines’ largest urban area in Mindanao, is expected to be a viable alternative information technology hub three years from now, a study said.

In a report, research firm XMG said organizations belonging to the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry are expected to lead the development of the area as a robust technology hub.

Citing a study it conducted between January to March 2008, the company said that outsourcing vendors who participated in the survey are very bullish about Davao City, primarily due to the area’s larger population of untapped qualified resources compared to Cebu City in the Visayas.

The study highlighted that competition in Cebu City is nearing saturation as the talent ramp-up continues.

The study also highlighted the population of Davao City as considerably higher than other Tier-2 offshoring cities globally. In the Philippine context, Davao City’s population is 71% higher than Cebu City, 499% larger than Olongapo-Subic City, 333% higher than the Angeles-Clark area, and 340% larger than Baguio City.

“The city’s estimated workforce is twice of Cebu, 9 times of Subic, and 7 times of Clark, and 6 times of Baguio. This has not even taken to account the manpower pool at the nearby cities and provinces of Davao City," the company said.

According to the study, Davao City has various educational institutions annually yielding a higher number of IT and BPO qualified graduates than Subic, Clark, and Baguio by 689%, 278%, and 40% respectively.

Telecom facilities, transportation networks, and public transport systems are already in place in Davao City, the study said. However, XMG indicated there is a need to further improve and modernize these services.

In addition, the existence of a public transport system in Davao City is noteworthy yet still needs improvement in order to expand locators’ recruitment reach and the transportation of people from various points in and out of the city.

The study said the attractiveness of Davao City is greatly affected by the negative perception about the Mindanao region as a whole.

On February 2008, a travel advisory was released by US Consular Affairs warning their citizens on the risk of traveling in Central, Western, and Southern part of Mindanao due to security and safety reasons, which includes terrorism.

XMG researcher Camille Lumbang said that although these travel warnings are empirically grounded from actual hostile incidents in Mindanao, it should be emphasized that these are only isolated incidents from specific areas.

“There is a challenge then to substantiate and prove that such occurrences do not pose a general security threat for Davao City," she said.

Lumbang admitted, however, “there is a crying need for both the government and private sector to act together in improving the overall image of Davao City to attract ICT locators."

Citing a previous study, XMG said Davao City has been upgraded to a level C2 rating from its previous level D standing as the city emerges as a viable site for captive and outsourcing services.

“While there are still a number of geopolitical, geophysical and infrastructure challenges, the large untapped manpower base in Davao City will give its allure and ‘staying power’ as a viable site in the years to come," Lumbang said

The report continues added: “Potential locators in Davao City must have a heightened awareness and should conduct their own formal and internal risks analysis rather than reacting to headlines about specific regions under consideration such as the problems happening in other parts of Mindanao."

Among the emerging alternative offshoring cities cited in the study were Montevideo in Uruguay, Jakarta in Indonesia, and Casablanca in Morocco. It focused on forecasting the global demand for offshoring and outsourcing services and the site optimization of emerging cities. - GMANews.TV

Davao cited as emerging offshoring site (http://http://newsinfo.inquirer.net/breakingnews/infotech/view/20080604-140720/Davao-cited-as-emerging-offshoring-site)

MANILA, Philippines -- Despite prevailing questions about the peace and order situation in the area, Davao City is becoming an emerging "alternative" city for offshore outsourcing, according to XMG Asia Pacific.

In its "Global Offshoring Leadership" study, the analyst firm said Davao City will be a viable alternative site within the next three years. XMG's ongoing study focuses on forecasting the global demand for offshoring and outsourcing services and the site optimization of emerging cities.

Other alternative offshoring cities mentioned are Montevideo (Uruguay), Jakarta (Indonesia) and Casablanca (Morocco).

Despite periods of turmoil in the Mindanao Region, XMG said service providers who participated in the study are very bullish about Davao City, primarily due to the area's larger population of untapped qualified resources compared to Cebu City.

Cebu, according to XMG, is nearing saturation as it receives more investments, most of which are from the expansion of existing locators in Metro Manila.

Among others, the study highlighted the population of Davao City as considerably higher than other "tier-2" offshoring cities. It is estimated that Davao City's workforce is twice that of Cebu.

Telecom facilities, transportation networks and public transport systems are already in place in Davao City. However, XMG indicated there is a need to further improve and modernize these services. Otherwise, business continuity and disaster recovery plans would go unfulfilled.

Meanwhile, Commission on Information and Communications Technology commissioner Monchito Ibrahim reported three major call center operators that have set up in Davao, including CyberCity Teleservices and Link2Support.

"Ayala Land is building an IT park in Davao which should address investor confidence as peace and order remains a challenge," Ibrahim told INQUIRER.net via phone.

Aside from call centers, he said the CICT is pushing Davao as a hub for software development.

"Worker supply is not a problem because Davao attracts workers from other cities like Butuan and Cagayan De Oro," he said.

News Article
New tourism industry trends pushed in Davao
By Nef Luczon

TOURISM Secretary Joseph Ace Durano pushed for the launching a “glamorous camping” and “adventure travels” in the Davao Region.
Durano said these tourism trends would mean more jobs and income to the industry that the adventure travels could generate about P90 million in revenues for the region every year.
“The US makes $300 million in that package alone, so it could do the
same to us as well,” he said, adding that he already talked with the regional officials about the matter, after it was introduced in an adventure congress at Clark, Pampanga.
He said he already explained the benefit of these new trends to the tourism industry.
“Davao has all the ingredients on this adventure package,” he said, adding that foreign and local tourists can avail of the package that will include activities during a visit to a certain spot.
Meanwhile the “Glamping,” is a new growing trend that, Durano said, may be put to the mid-area of Mount Apo. “It is a glamorous camping that when you reach the first stop of Mt. Apo, someone will greet you with fine dining wearing with formal dresses and attire,” he said.
He said that this was inspired by tourism strategy in South African countries. Nef Luczon

A recently concluded XMG Global Offshoring Leadership Study revealed that Davao City in the Mindanao Region of the Philippines will be a viable alternative site 3 years from now. The study predicts that organizations that are formulating the technology and procedural solutions to integrate a large manpower base into their global delivery centers will be at the forefront of the offshoring and outsourcing industry as the labor arbitrage model continues. This result is part of an ongoing study conducted between January to March 2008, which focuses on forecasting the global demand for offshoring and outsourcing services and the site optimization of emerging cities. Among the emerging alternative offshoring cities cited in the study were Montevideo, Uruguay; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Casablanca, Morocco.

Despite periods of turmoil in the Mindanao Region, outsourcing vendors and captives who participated in the study are very bullish about Davao City primarily due to the area’s larger population of untapped qualified resources compared to Cebu City in the Visayas Region north of Mindanao. The study highlighted that competition in Cebu City is nearing saturation as the talent ramp-up continues.

Among others, the study highlighted the population of Davao City as considerably higher than other Tier-2 offshoring cities globally. In the Philippine context, Davao City’s population is 71% higher than Cebu City, 499% larger than Olongapo-Subic City 333% higher than Angeles-Clark City and 340% larger than Baguio City. The city’s estimated workforce is twice of Cebu, 9 times of Subic and 7 times of Clark and 6 times of Baguio. This has not even taken to account the manpower pool at the nearby cities and provinces of Davao City.

According to the study, Davao City has various educational institutions annually yielding a higher number of IT and BPO qualified graduates than Subic, Clark and Baguio by 689%, 278% and 40% respectively.

Telecom facilities, transportation networks and public transport systems are already in place in Davao City. However, XMG indicated there is a need to further improve and modernize these services; otherwise, business continuity and disaster recovery plans will go unfulfilled. In addition, the existence of a public transport system in Davao City is noteworthy yet still needs improvement in order to expand locators’ recruitment reach and the transportation of people from various points in and out of the city.

Overall, the attractiveness of Davao City is greatly affected by the negative perception about the Mindanao region as a whole. On February 2008, a travel advisory was released by US Consular Affairs warning their citizens on the risk of traveling in Central, Western and Southern part of Mindanao due to security and safety reasons, which includes terrorism.

According to XMG Researcher Camille Lumbang “Although these travel warnings are empirically grounded from actual hostile incidents in Mindanao, it should be emphasized that these are only isolated incidents from specific areas. There is a challenge then to substantiate and prove that such occurrences do not pose a general security threat for Davao City.”

Lumbang added, “There is a crying need for both the government and private sector to act together in improving the overall imagery of Davao City to attract ICT locators, which are seen to improve Davao’s economy”. Lumbang continues to say, “The negative perception on the Mindanao region has caused massive repercussions to Davao’s image as a potential offshoring site to date.”

Citing previous years 2007 XMG Offshoring Risk and Infrastructure Index Reports, Davao City has been upgraded to a level C2 rating from its previous level D standing as the city emerges as a viable site for captive and outsourcing services. “While there are still a number of geopolitical, geophysical and infrastructure challenges, the large untapped manpower base in Davao City will give its allure and ‘staying power’ as a viable site in the years to come”. The report continues to add, “Potential locators in Davao City must have a heightened awareness and should conduct their own formal and internal risks analysis rather than reacting to headlines about specific regions under consideration such as the problems happening in other parts of Mindanao”.

“Compared to other cities in the south, Davao City is very promising and it is seen to be the next generation city that would benefit large captives provided that risk issues are addressed properly”, concludes Lumbang.

Rice crisis won't hurt tourism industry: DOT
Sunstar Davao

MINDANAO'S tourism industry has not been affected so far by the sudden surge in the prices of commercial rice or even by reports of an alleged rice shortage, said Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano.

Durano was in Davao City Wednesday for the opening of the multi-million visitor's center at the Philippine Eagle Foundation Center in Malagos, Davao City, funded by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

The tourism secretary added that as far as their monitoring is concerned, hotels, restaurants and other tourism-related sectors have not changed the prices of their products and services.

Durano said the issue is not the shortage of supply but the unexplained steep increase in the prices of commercial rice.

The prices of rice increased by as much as P16 in some parts of Mindanao in a span of two weeks from P34 to P50 amidst assurance from government agencies that there is more than ample supply to last the lean months of July to September.

"It is the speculation in the prices of rice that is driving its prices up, it is the same thing with oil," Durano said.

"The government is very suspicious on the reason behind the increase of the prices of rice," he added.

One million peso Hole-in-One prize
By Imee Garcia

NONONG Tan and Joseph Ng decided to get together one morning and play a round. Nonong brought along his little brown dachshund. When Nonong sank a twelve-foot putt on the first hole, the dachshund stood on his hind legs and began to dance, jump and bark. Joseph said: "That's great, what does he do when you miss the putt?" Nonong answered: "He does somersaults." When Joseph asked how many somersaults, Nonong replied; "That depends on how hard I kick him." Hahaha...just kidding!

The 20th GET Memorial Golf Tournament is going to be held at the Apo Golf and Country Club on June 15, 2008. There is a One Million Peso prize for anyone who makes a hole-in-one in hole no. 4. Aside from that, there is also a Five Hundred Thousand Peso prize for anyone who makes a hole-in-one in hole numbers 7, 11 and 17. It is a team and individual competition, stableford format. The awards ceremony will be held at the Royal Mandaya Hotel. More than 250 players are expected to join the tournament.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The tournament is in honor of the late Guillermo Torres Sr., founder of the Mindanao Colleges, which is now called University of Mindanao. The proceeds will go to the scholars of the Mt. Apo Science Foundation. This is reason enough to join the tournament. You will be helping the less fortunate and deserving children go to school, and at the same time, with a little luck, who knows, you may win the hole in one prize.

We are in the middle of summertime. Have you noticed how cold it has been over these past few days? Yes, it gets very cold...that is... if you're watching a movie at NCCC mall! People are avoiding the sun, spending time inside malls. It is too hot to stay outdoors. If you want to go to the beach, one of the places I would recommend is Paradise Island. Why--because the area is covered with blue "trapal." (The trapal is a kind of roofing material made of plastic, which is similar to what they use to make raincoats, but much thicker.) If you want to go to the beach and prefer to stay under the shade, this is the place to be. But you knew that already, right? Almost every Davaoeno knows about Paradise Island. There are, of course, other beach resorts also that you can go to. There are also other things you can do to cope with the heat.

It is so discouraging to play golf in this extreme heat. However, if you're a golf addict like me, you would want to keep on playing despite the terrible weather conditions. And because of this, you need to wear appropriate clothes. Short shorts and sleeveless tops just won't do.

Most of us wear a golf shirt with short sleeves. Wearing one with long sleeves just feels so uncomfortable at times. If you're looking for removable sleeves, there are a few available at sports shops. I know Nike has them. However, if you're not brand conscious and you're tight on the budget, I recommend that you go to a bicycle shop. There, you have several choices of cycling sleeves. I use those when I play golf and I tell you, they may feel weird at first, but later on you will get used to them and you would not want to play without them.

They come in different sizes and colors. So if you're wearing a fuchsia shirt...go home and change. Hehe. Seriously, if you feel like being fashionable on the course, you can buy several colors to match your comfy shirts since they are between 75 to 150 pesos only per pair.

Happy Golfing Protect yourself from the heat. Drink lots and lots of water. And don't wear fuchsia. (wink)

oneminute jr films debut at South Spot
Published : 2008-06-04
Mindanao Times

THE ONE-MINUTE short films from 21 young filmmakers across the country will be shown the whole week, starting yesterday on South Spot channel 13, a Davao-based info-lifestyle cable channel on Skycable.

The films are produced by young Filipino filmmakers under the auspices of the theoneminutesjr organization — an international community of junior filmmakers (ages 12-20) making their own 60-second films. Though challenged by time constraints, the films challenge the young filmmakers to form their ideas clearly without curtailing their right to express themselves.

The 21 filmmakers — composed of the members of Kabataan News Network, a group of youth video journalists across the country — were the first batch of Filipino Oneminutejrs after being trained in a three-day workshop in Manila last September.

New York based One-minute video facilitators Evellyn Kriji and Eric Robertson conducted the training which included shooting a 60-second film as their workshop’s output.

The films centered on their various views about child and youth rights. The Unicef, European Cultural Foundation and the One-Minute foundation have been organizing workshops since 2003, with their Manila workshop the first for the country.

Davao City was represented by Shemie Ann Magallen of the University of Southeastern Philippines and Mark Lloyd Revilla, a mass communication student of the Holy Cross of Davao College.

“It was fun, we learned a lot from the workshop, particularly on filmmaking, our instructors were really good,” Shemie said. The Davaoena teener made a film about a youth reporter killed while writing an investigative story which she titled Young Blood.

Mark Lloyd said he learned the art of directing without directing, which he says are skills needed to effectively bring out a more natural and effective performance from actors especially first-timers.

The adventurous Marco shot his film Child’s play… in working hours near the former Smoking Mountain community. It revolves around a cigarette vendor, sampaguita peddler and a pedicab, all children working to earn a living in stark contrast to their friends immersed in child’s play.

Aside from directing their films, Marco and Shemie also played some characters in their co-workshoppers’ films. The two said that gaining new friends in the workshop was also one memorable experience for them. (PIA)

Davao's watershed code's implementing rules completed
06/06/2008 | 06:31 AM

DAVAO CITY, Philippines - The implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of the Watershed Protection, Conservation, and Management Ordinance, otherwise known as the Watershed Code, have been completed.

"The final draft of the IRR will be presented to the joint executive-legislative committee in June 11 then forwarded to the City Legal Office for review and recommendation for approval by the City Mayor," Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling, proponent of the Watershed Code, said Thursday.

Cabling said the technical working group formed by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte through Executive Order 1 of 2008 finished its work Wednesday. The group's task was to craft the IRR.

The Watershed Code, passed in 2007, aims to protect the watersheds, which are the city's upland sources of potable water. Watersheds are identified as environmentally critical areas where development of any sort is prohibited to ensure the sustainability of the city's water supply.

Two classifications of Environmentally Critical Areas are recognized in the Code:

1. Preservation Areas, where land conversion to any classification and human settlement are prohibited

2. Agro-forestry or Non-tillage Areas, where mono-crop agriculture is allowed provided that a phase-out plan of three years shall be granted to existing large scale mono-crop agriculture.

Mono-crop agriculture refers to tilling of only one kind of crop like bananas.

The ordinance on agro-forestry or non-tillage areas provides that "no permit shall be issued to new applications for mono-crop agriculture ventures, and for existing mono-crop agriculture covered by the phase-out plan to be not allowed to expand upon effectivity of the code." - Sun.Star Davao

Product and market knowledge essential in ecotourism promotions, says WWF

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (6 June) -- "Know your product and your market" was the advice of World Wildlife Fund (WWF) president Lorenzo Tan to tourism stakeholders of the Davao Region during the Ecotourism Congress held in Davao City on June 4, 2008 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.

Tan also said that in order to promote extensively tourists destinations, the industry players must also know what the tourists want to see.

"Tourists will not wait and you don't want them to keep waiting for the shark whales to appear," he said as an example.

Citing one of their trips in the Malita, Davao del Sur he said fishermen would ask them to watch the sea cow "dugong" on top of the pile of sacks of copra while sipping their coffee early morning.

"True enough the dugongs appear and one of their companions was not contended seeing them there in the waters because he wants to know the reason why they are there," he said.

Aided by some of the fishermen they found out that 10 feet below the Malita waters are the seagrass which the dugongs are attracted to.

Consult the experts he said and fishermen are the ones who are in close contact to these fauna as they encounter them regularly during their daily fishing trips and besides they know the area.

Tan said the industry must know the link of mega fauna to its food because their ability of knowing this will bring them the tourists to their area.

Tan also stressed that the players must also know the behavior of their products saying if you want to continue the business you must understand the behavior of the products you promote.

But it is not enough that you adopt these steps because what is important is working with the community.

He said the municipalities are equipped with the local government code and they need to capitalize on this because this is an advantage.

He said when people within the community would feed that they lack the access then that will the source of conflict even as he said that if they feel they get screwed you will not get their support. (PIA) [top]

Int'l adventure filmmakers eye RP islands

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (6 June) -- International adventure film producers of reality game show consider the Philippines as a good site after the 8th edition of "Survivor France" was successfully filmed in Caramoan, Camarines Sur.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano told Davao reporters that the successful filming of Survivor France led other international producers to consider the islands in the Philippines as the right site for adventure.

Durano graced the Ecotourism Congress in Davao City on Wednesday, June 4, 2008 where tourism industry players, property owners, tourism officers and planners talked on the new standards as guide for developing ecotourism destinations.

Several tourists would go for physical activity and not just sightseeing and Davao with authentic destinations has the ingredient for adventure travel, he said.

Durano said they had been pushing for that to include diving and scuba diving is another market segment.

It maybe recalled that diving was promoted the Department of Tourism in the European market in a Travel Show early this year and generated interests among tourists.

The Adventure Travel is already a growing market, he said. With the global travel of about $900 million market, one-fifth of this is on adventure travel.

Durano meanwhile said that some of international producers from Korea and the US are looking for areas here that are ideal for location shoots.

In fact he said the "Survivor U.S." is considering Caramoan as the site for their next episode.

"With our country consisting of several islands there will be lot of sites ideal for adventure," he said.

Several tourists would go for physical activity and not just sightseeing and Davao with authentic destinations has the ingredient for adventure travel.

Durano said they had been pushing for that to include diving and scuba diving is another market segment.

As far as the airing of the Survivor France, he said part of the agreement is to include the showing of tourism sites of the Philippines as an opener to the main episode.

He said with nine million viewers daily for "Survivor France" beamed to television viewers in Europe and Canada that would be a high priced media mileage of promoting the destinations in the Philippines.

The airing of Survivor France will be from July to September of a reality game show that isolates its contestants in the wilderness to compete for cash and prizes in a location of exotic environments.

Durano said at Caramoan, a P200 million worth of facilities was built for the crew and contestants of Survivor France. And using it for four months, the producers paid P30 million to the provincial government of Camarines Sur. What the government paid was only the fuel needs for the entire filming, he said.

The Adventure Travel is already a growing market, he said. With the global travel of about $900 million market, one-fifth of this is on adventure travel. (PIA) [top]

Young Davaoeña crowned
Miss Teen Philippines
By Maya M. Padillo

When the curtains opened for the grand finals of the Miss Teen Philippines International search at the CAP Auditorium in Davao City on May 31, 30 young, beautiful, and witty finalists took to the stage. They came from different areas of the country: Bacolod, Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro, Negros Oriental, Cebu City, National Capital Region, Pampanga, Iloilo City, Dumaguete, Bicol, and Davao City.

Halfway into the show, the participants were whittled down to 10, and then towards the end they were down to five for the final face-off. It was a showdown of wit and beauty as the five finalists took turns answering and expressing their views on the environment, sex education and reproductive health, global warming, and values.

A young lass from Davao City, Esperanza Odulio, touched many hearts when she told the crowd that the biggest mistake she had ever made was running away from God. With her fetching looks and wisdom beyond her age, Esperanza emerged the winner and is now Miss Teen Philippines International.

Odulio, a former host of GMA 7 Davao’s variety show “Kuyaw!”, said she never expected to win the title. She received a cash prize of P100,000, a four-year college scholarship, and gifts and prizes from the sponsors.

PIA Press Release

(PIA) [top]

Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment Center- world class treatment now in Davao City

The DMSF Hospital welcomes another big break in the medical field by being the FIRST Hospital in the entire Visayas and Mindanao that houses the latest in Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT).

The United Medical Supply operates inside the DMSF Hospital the Brand New SECHRIST 3200 monoplace chamber, US PVHO (Pressure Vessel for Human Occupancy), US FDA. It is internationally certified for medical use and safety suited for critical care patients that needed such treatment.

The HBOT is a medical treatment where a patient breaths 100% oxygen while in a pressurized chamber. Large doses of oxygen are dissolved into blood or body tissues. These benefits cannot be achieved by breathing normal amounts of oxygen in a regular room Oxygen pressure. HBOT stimulates small blood vessel growth, promotes new skin growth and helps fight infection. Furthermore, it aids in the current medical and surgical therapy.

unsa sad ang changes sa details of original plan:D

As per FLI's Area Manager in the entire Mindanao Area -

The lot had already been purchased and the concept would be similar to FLI's project in Cebu - Grand Cenia. However, it is shorter yet bigger...hmmmm gets? ehehehehehhe

ganito kc yun.....SAD TO SAY....it will just be 20 storeys (so smaller). But instead of one it will be two 20 storeys tower aka a TWIN TOWER! (so bigger and doble sa project ng FLI sa Cebu):okay:

The first 20 storey tower will be a condotel while the second 20 storey tower will be a residential condominium.

Anyway, this is just the initial plan and is still subject to change. So the number of storeys may change. But as of today, yun ang plan sa area na yun. Preselling of the condominium should commence in August of this year.

Syanga pala...maswerte ang mga nakabili na ng units sa first building ng One Oasis kc by this coming Monday, magincrease na ang price by 10%. And to those na nakabili na...eto good news, by June 9 - magstart na ang horizontal development. andun na ang equipment ng contractor. Iba kc ang contractor ng horizontal development ng One Oasis...after that, mag start na rin ang vertical development - construction of the buildings. ;)

Iba kc ang contractor ng horizontal development ng One Oasis...after that, mag start na rin ang vertical development - construction of the buildings. ;)
does it have space to accommodate 2 buildings. i would have liked 1 tall with a wide and spceous gardenscape on the ground. half the height condotel and the other half res units:D

about that, what i heard was that the retail--mall and the bPO wll be in bajada and cybergate davao will be in the lapanday property somewhere in buhangin

The RLC project in Bajada is Cybergate Davao. With regard to the project in Lapanday, it may be patterned after the Cybergate Center in Pioneer Mandaluyong...however, this is not yet final since it was just a mere announcement and wala pa namang blueprint tlga. :okay: ehehehehhe so let's just keep our fingers crossed. I already went to Robinsons Homes Inc office here in Davao - sila ang naghahandle ng horizontal project in Davao (subdivisions) and was able to speak with the head as well. They have heard that RLC had inked a partnership with the Lapandays to develop the project pero they (Robinsons Homes) are not aware if it will be a condo or a subdivision. Normally kc, if its a subdivision...Robinsons Homes Inc ang naghahandle....but RHI Davao were not advised so. ;) However, sa Manila office - yun nga Robinsons Land Highrise Building Division president's Frederick Go announced the upcoming project. Although, it is confirmed that RLC -HRBD and not Robinsons Homes which is a subsidiary of RLC will handle the project - till now, wala pa tayong magawa but to wait na lang sa final plan....eheheheh but so far, wala pa naman project subdivision ang RLC- HIGHRISE BUILDING DIVISION, well except for OTIS 888 which is an upscale community of townhouses with its own community mall :okay:.

Anyway...plans are still subject to change ;)

DAR central office transferred to Davao City
Sunstar Davao

OUTGOING Presidential Adviser on New Government Centers Silvestre Bello III on Friday lauded the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) central office's transfer to Davao City.

After years of delay, the DAR central office was finally transferred to Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA) compound in Mintal.

At least 300 employees of agency's central office will be initially relocated to hold office at SPDA compound.

Bello, who was tasked by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to facilitate the transfer of DAR and three other agencies -- Department of Agriculture (DA), Department of Tourism (DOT) and Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC) -- outside the National Capital Region, admitted he was apprehensive about not accomplishing even one before he exits his current post and assumes as new Cabinet secretary.

"Only DAR cooperated fully to implement the order. We already had the MOAs (memorandum of agreements) for the other agencies ready but these have yet to be signed," Bello said.

But he was quick to add that one will soon be signed with the DA whose central office will be transferred to Ilagan, Isabela.

The initial proposal for the DAR Central Office was at the old Davao International Airport Building, but Bello said Agrarian Reform Secretary Nasser Pangandaman balked at the P100 million funding needed to rehabilitate the building.

"He (Pangandaman) said the money would rather be used for Carp implementation," Bello said. (GLP)

IMO, big enough to house two vertical structures, but small enough if FLI will pattern the project after One Oasis. Pasabot, walay choice ang FLI but to make the building tall. So maski mag change pa ang plano, I am still certain na highrise gihapon.

Davao listed in DOT's priority Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism program

by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (7 June) -- Davao is already in the priority for the Greet (Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism) program of the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the details are being finalized but this would come after the three pilot areas are completed.

The Davao area will have four sites and two of these are in Davao City said DOT XI regional director Sonia Garcia.

Durano explained that under Greet program the focus also will be the participation of the community.

He cited that in Donsol, Sorsogon the community had champion the "Greet" through their whale shark watching. The other areas are in Bohol where the chocolate hills are located and in Siargo in the Caraga Region.

Under the program, they need to level the playing field by giving the community easy access to skills, capital, market opportunities plus value formation.

In Donsol, he said 60 fishing boats were transformed into tourists boats that will ferry visitors to the area where they will get first hand look of the whale sharks and the fishermen as "butanting" tour guide.

Right now, he said, the Donsol community are advocating other communities by using tourism to gain livelihood.

"We will not move in the area unless we are done in a community," he said.

Durano was hinting for glamorous camping or 'Glamping' in Mt. Apo. The place is ideal to try out the concept among foreign tourists who would experience culture and nature through camping and yet get high-end reception just like in five-star hotels.

He pictured 'glamping' as one that involves safari-style adventure with champagne, fine dining, rustic luxury of air-conditioned tents, hot water and other amenities.

He said this type of adventure has become popular among wealthy travelers from North America, Europe and Africa where resorts offer king-sized bed with Persian rugs and others. (PIA) [top]

One tough lady VM Sara "Inday" Duterte

Celebrity Biker
Sara Duterte
Her Father’s Daughter
By Lester Dizon

We didn’t know what to expect. TEN, Inc. president and MotorCycle Magazine publisher Ager Kiocho and yours truly had just finished our breakfast at the Café Marco of the Marco Polo Hotel and were waiting for TEN, Inc. director and prominent Davao businessman Engineer Lorenzo Te, Jr. Jun, as his friends call him, was going to introduce us to Sara Duterte, the daughter of Davao City’s celebrated and tough Mayor Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte and she’ll be the subject of our Celebrity Biker section for this issue.

We eyed a pretty mestiza as she sat at a nearby table and Ager whispered to me that she could be the Mayor’s daughter but he wasn’t sure. I turned to look and affirmed Ager’s observation – she was indeed pretty, her Eurasian lineage shown by her facial features, her fair skin and her bone structure. Having met daughters of politicians and powerful businessmen, I was half-expecting her to be snooty, snobbish or at the very least, bratty if she was indeed the Mayor’s daughter.

A Winsome Personality

When Jun finally arrived, the pretty mestiza stood up, greeted him and called him “Tito” or uncle, which is a sign of respect given to close family friends. Jun brought her over to our table and introduced her to Ager and me. “Sara, meet Ager Kiocho and Lester Dizon of MotorCycle Magazine”, Jun said. “They’re here to interview you for the magazine.” She smiled politely, looked at us and asked, “Are you sure you want to feature me?” “Your magazine might not sell as much if you do”, she joked.

Immediately, my initial image of a bratty mayor’s daughter was dispelled. Sara Duterte’s humility, her candor and her winsome smile was uncommon among rare, sincerely courteous political scions. But then again, I realized that her father, the honorable Mayor, is likewise a rare, results-oriented leader in this age of all-show-and-no-go politics. As we get to know her, the saying “an apple doesn’t fall far from an apple tree…” kept popping in my head. More than that, she shines like a golden apple and I guess she’s the apple of her father’s eye, or probably the eye of many Dabawenyos (Davao locals).

Atty. Inday

Since her dad lovingly calls her “Inday”, which is an affectionate nickname in these parts, a lot of her friends, family friends and locals call her the same. Having recently achieved another milestone by passing the Bar Examinations, which officially makes her a lawyer, waiters who were serving us during our meal, respectfully referred to her as “Attorney”. “And I thought your name was Sara”, I joked as people called her by these other names. She laughed gaily and showed her sense of humor which I find extremely refreshing. This was one of those interviews that I thoroughly enjoy doing.

Sara confided that she prefers working in Manila because of the anonymity. She enjoys being treated as a common person while dispensing her duties as clerk of court in the Supreme Court, which is a simplicity she couldn’t enjoy in Davao because of her father’s popularity and because of the respect that most Dabawenyos bestow on their family. However, she is grateful for the privilege. “Papa (Mayor Duterte) raised us to be humble and to work hard for our keep”, she narrated. “I enjoy my privacy and I guess that a part of me is like him – I’d rather work without the publicity and let the results speak for themselves.”

A Real Biker Babe

Another thing that Sara really enjoys but unfortunately does not have time for is motorcycling. “I love riding around Davao and I really miss it when I’m in Manila”, she declared. “When I was younger, Papa would close down the village street in front of our house, put some traffic cones around, and teach us to ride motorcycles around these obstacles. We would practice almost daily, unless he’s busy with his duties as Mayor, and over time, I became quite good at riding. Initially, my brother was more into motorcycles than I was, but when I inherited his sport bike after he left to study in Manila, I really got hooked with being a biker. However, Papa would never allow me to ride alone because he feels that I had a tendency to ride fast when I don’t have a “controller” or a rider that dictates the pace of my riding.”

When asked of the bike model that she currently rides, she replied that she prefers riding her “comfort” bike, which she defines as the bike that she can ride with extreme confidence. “It’s a Yamaha Virago”, she replied when I asked her of the bike’s specifics. I assumed it was a Virago 400 that she inherited from the Virago-loving Mayor, who I had the pleasure of interviewing in 2003 during an Isuzu Media Drive around Davao. I told Sara that her dad even kidded me then that we should swap bikes (his Virago 400 for my then-new Virago 535, which now serves our “Cruisin’ for Bruisin’” Project Bike and as my daily ride). “Oh no, he sold that one years ago”, she replied. “My comfort bike is a Yamaha Virago 750.” Huh? A seven fifty for a woman’s comfort bike? With these words, she unknowingly crushed my male ego.

Riding to Eden

Mayor Duterte dropped by to meet us and discuss some government business with some of his official staff, who were also having breakfast with us. He instructed Sara to take me to their garage, choose our bikes and take a ride around Davao. After he left, we also left and followed Sara to their house in one of Davao’s many subdivisions. She led us to a wooden shed that the Mayor had built where he parks his modest collection of cruisers. Among them were a Yamaha V-Star 650 and 1100, Virago 750 and 1100, Honda Shadow 750 and 1100, BMW R1200C, Harley-Davidson Sportster and a Honda Silver Wing, which is a 500cc touring maxi-scooter. (Sorry, I was too excited to take an accurate note of all the bikes there.) There were also a number of Yamaha Serow 225 and other dirt bikes parked around the “shed” but unfortunately, the Honda Gold Wing three-wheeled trike that the Mayor recently bought wasn’t there. “I kidded my dad that he was getting old because he needed a 3-wheeler instead of a motorcycle”, quipped Sara.

Sara hopped on her red-and-white Yamaha Virago 750 (go ahead, ferchrissakes and call it a comfort bike) while I chose a black Yamaha V-Star 1100 as my ride (blame it on my male ego). Two mechanics joined us and they rode the Harley-Davidson and the BMW cruisers in case I’d like to use them during Sara’s pictorial. We rode through the relatively light Davao traffic, stopped for pictures at a Phoenix Petroleum station (a new oil company that originated in Davao) and then rode through the countryside and up a mountain pass to Eden. Throughout the trip, I could see that Sara was obviously enjoying the ride as she displayed a poise and confidence that is uncommon among lady riders.

We went into an upscale mountain top subdivision called “Mountain Haven”, where we took some shot of Sara posing on the bikes. The cool, refreshing scenery was quite an apt background for the cool, refreshing and winsome personality posing in front of my camera’s lens. “It has been two years since I last rode a bike”, she later narrated. “I really enjoyed this day.” To be completely honest, I really enjoyed this day, too.

Davao’s Daughter

During dinner, I asked Sara where she got her looks. “My mom, Elizabeth Zimmerman, is the daughter of a half-German, which makes her one-fourth German and makes me one-eight German.” When I told her that I am half-German, she curiously looked at me and asked me to explain. She laughed quite heartily when I quipped, “Oh, my father is a German Shepherd.” Bark-bark.

During a phone conversation more two weeks after our ride, she told us that she will be giving up her job in Manila and returning to Davao to teach law at a local university. We can only surmise that like her father, she has it in her blood to lovingly work for the continuous improvement of Dabawenyos because evidently, like her father (who is also a lawyer and a top-notch city prosecutor before he became the Mayor) she has also developed a passion for Davao as well as a love for the law. And fortunately for us, she also inherited his love for motorcycling.

Sara Duterte is truly her father’s daughter.

does it really matter if the tallest in mindanao is outside davao?if gensan builds a 30 storey building, would that make them more "cosmopolitan" than us? imo, although high rise buildings isnt davao's trademark,we have the monopoly of it in mindanao :)

ganito lang. taipeis tallest is taller than singapore's tallest..maski kl mas mataas ang tallest kaysa singapore.pero mas maganda at mas "cosmopolitan" naman di hamak ang singapore sa 2 cities na yan :)

imo,it would take more than a few tall buildings for a mindanaoan city to replace davao as the premiere "cosmopolitan" city in the island.sa overall package ng urbanidad, mahirap pantayan ang davao ;)

ganito lang. taipeis tallest is taller than singapore's tallest..maski kl mas mataas ang tallest kaysa singapore.pero mas maganda at mas "cosmopolitan" naman di hamak ang singapore sa 2 cities na yan :)

speaking of taipei 101 ngek ngil.ad kaayo tana.hon pag walay kauban na scrapers hehe

i strongly agree, Taipei, even with its tallest bldg in the world. it could never beat hongkong or singapore. and kung makita ninyo ang taipie 101, siya lang tawon isa na highrise sa taiwan unlike sa hongkong a maski wala sa ila ang top 5 tallest pero daghan sila skyscrapers. so ila na ang tallest basta naa sa ato ang most highrise bldgs in all of mindanao.hehehe.

yeps i agree with that too. yung taipei 101 just sez that taiwan has something to prove pero mas maganda parin yung skyline ng hongkong. yups dapat vibrant yung atmosphere

tapei's 101 will no longer be the tallest...theres an on going construction in china, and they said it would be the tallest in Meters...the name of the building is Shanghai World Financial Center...grabe ang pag build, napaka modern, tapos may mga equipments pa na ininstall nila inside the building to combat earthquake and other calamities, tapos may special equipment para naman sa mga balak mag pa crash ng airplanes sa building just like what happened sa WTC...

whats the tallest building in the philippines?in meters not in floors...ty..

;21497571']does it really matter if the tallest in mindanao is outside davao?if gensan builds a 30 storey building, would that make them more "cosmopolitan" than us? imo, although high rise buildings isnt davao's trademark,we have the monopoly of it in mindanao :)

ganito lang. taipeis tallest is taller than singapore's tallest..maski kl mas mataas ang tallest kaysa singapore.pero mas maganda at mas "cosmopolitan" naman di hamak ang singapore sa 2 cities na yan :)

imo,it would take more than a few tall buildings for a mindanaoan city to replace davao as the premiere "cosmopolitan" city in the island.sa overall package ng urbanidad, mahirap pantayan ang davao ;)

amen and amen to that.....:banana2::applause::applause::applause:
