Generoso bridge to open in time for class opening
by Rose B Palacio

Davao City (7 June) -- Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) XI Director Jerome dela Rosa said Dabawenyos will be glad to know that the road along Generoso Bridge at Bankerohan would be made passable to avoid traffic congestion during the opening of classes.

It was no less than DPWH Secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. who wants the bridge be passable on or before the opening of classes to avoid heavy traffic along the area. Schools start opening its classes on Tuesday, June 10th.

"We will advance the bridge opening even before the formal inauguration (on June 19th) to benefit not only students but the public as a whole", Director dela Rosa said.

The total reconstruction of Generoso bridge is supposed to be completed ay August 10, 2008, but DPWH and Ciriaco Construction were able to keep up a good system (at a 24-hour work) thereby finishing the construction ahead of schedule within the period of only more than three months. We are now concentrating on the finishing touches on the bridge approaches, he said.

The formal inauguration of Generoso bridge is slated on Jujne 19th with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo expected to lead the official inauguration.

Director dela Rosa said the inauguration coincides with the various events being undertaken until June 23rd, the 110th anniversary celebration of the DPWH with this year's theme as: "DPWH: Building on the Strength & Experience of 110 Years of Bridging People."

At present, a Mindanao-wide inter-regional cultural competition is being held in Cagayan de Oro City (June 6) with five (5) regions throughout Mindanao competing: Davao - Reg 11; Cagayan de Oro - Reg 10; Zamboanga - 9; Cotabato - 10; and Caraga - Reg 13.

The Inter-regional champion will represent the whole of Mindanao region during the National Competition to be held in Manila slated June 23rd anniversary celebration of DPWH.

Last May 2, a regional cultural competition was held at CAP auditorium, Davao City. DPWH in Malita District Engineering Office under the leadership of DE Danny Versola garnered the Championship.

"We hope that the DPWHMalita Engineering Office will get the championship in this Mindanao-wide competition. It will be a pride for DPWH XI to represent Mindanao in the National Contest on June 23rd ", Director dela Rosa said. (PIA) [top]

Bid to make city a retirement haven passed
Sunstar Davao

A PROPOSAL to come up with a comprehensive program to sell Davao City as a retirement haven has been passed by the City Council on June 3.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The resolution, originally proposed in May 2006 and referred to the committee on tourism, requests the City Planning and Development office to come up with the plan to attract foreign retirees to stay in Davao.

Councilor Pilar Braga, proponent of the resolution, said the city should take advantage of the booming retirement industry, which will be good not only for the tourism industry but also for the economy and investment market.

Braga said that by 2025, the number of people aged 60 and over will be highest in Japan, Italy and Germany and this is projected to hit target foreign exchange receipts at a cumulative $40 billion.

"If we put our acts together, we can compete with Thailand and Malaysia - tow of the main destinations of retirees," Braga said.

A retirement village is a specially built community complete with infrastructure consisting of health and insurance facilities; 24-hour security arrangements; recreational, cultural and educational facilities, and transport services, aside from the housing facilities suited to the needs of the retirees. Parang di niya nakita yung blueprint. Pero yun ang sabi sa kanya ng manager for Mindanao projects ng FLI.

Ang construction probably would start daw 4Q ng 2008 or 1Q ng 2009. Kaya daw matagal ang FLI mag start ng construction is because pinapa-bid pa nila yung construction.

Filinvest ang developer pero iba ang contractor for the horizontal development (clearing and landscaping) and iba rin sa vertical development (construction of the buildings). Unlike with DMC na sila ang developer, seller, at contractor pa! :D

Kuya Jech, ganito ba ang itsura ng FLI condotel sa Davao. :D

That I cant confirm. Basta sabi ni Alan, ang bagong Area Manager ng FLI in Mindanao - it would be similar to Grand Cenia in Cebu however it would be a two-building project with one condotel (it would also work as a businessman hotel dinabaw ;)) and a condominium building.

Filinvest group earmarking P12B for projects this year

By Elizabeth Sanchez-Lacson
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 16:54:00 06/08/2008

MANILA, Philippines--The Filinvest Group is spending about P12 billion this year for property projects.

Filinvest Development Corp. president Josephine Gotianun-Yap said the company's property arm, Filinvest Land Inc. (FLI), would get half the amount and the balance would go to commercial center developer Filinvest Alabang Inc. (FAI).

For 2008, FLI plans to launch 34 projects nationwide. These include socialized and affordable housing, middle-rise buildings, commercial developments within subdivisions. These projects are expected to generate P8.6 billion in sales. They are located in Cavite, Batangas, Bulacan, Rizal, Caloocan City, Rial, Laguna, Cebu, Davao, Butuan City in Mindanao, Davao City, Pasig City, Sta. Mesa in Manila and Las Piñas.

FAI, for its part, is gearing up for the launch of The Levels, a four-tower residential community that features a nature-oriented lifestyle.

FAI launched recently the Entrata complex, beside the Festival Supermall in Alabang. It is a four-tower development which features a luxury hotel, small-office-home-office (Soho) units and two office towers built on a retail podium.

In the meantime, FDC is undertaking two projects: the 12-hectare Seascapes Resort Town close to the Mactan Shangri-La Hotel in Cebu. Seascapes is a master-planned tourism resort that has a beach club, casitas, villas, residential lots and residential condominium buildings. The beach club will be completed by the end of 2008 while resort operations should start in the first half of 2009.

The second project is The Beaufort, a two-tower condominium complex recently launched in Bonifacio Global City.

For a second I thought the photo was from Singapore or KL because of the convincing cleanliness and massive size of the building- the Holiday Taxi logo was a spoiler.... Why do you have to take a winding route to learn spanish when you can go straight without learning chavacano. Havaianas Slipper Sculptures: Celebrating Mindanao
Published : 2008-06-04
Mindanao Times

THE BEST Rubber flip-flops in the world take giant steps as they bring in the Havaianas Slipper Sculptures. These oversized flip flop displays arrived in Davao City after making its debut in Brazil and then traveling to the key summer fashion cities of the world – New York, Sydney, Tokyo and of course, Manila.

After making its way to Bonifacio High Street, The Fort during the first quarter of the year, these giant slippers are set to tour the islands, first arriving in Davao to celebrate Mindanao in Bloom.

In Davao, these slipper sculptures will walk around embellished with Mindanao’s best.

City's drainage improvement 80% done

THE multimillion-peso urban drainage project of the City Government of Davao is near completion but this does not mean an end to the flooding of city streets that Dabawenyos have had to contend with.

In the television program "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" Sunday, Vice Mayor Sara Z. Duterte said the project is about 80 percent complete, although she added that from the original 18 sites, drainage improvement was limited to only 13 due to physical and legal impediments.

The young Duterte, however, said the drainage project of the city is not enough to prevent flooding especially during heavy downpour like what happened last week.

"Pero maayo na lang pud kay kung mubaha dinhi sa Davao City, muhubas ra pud dayon ang tubig pila ka oras lang. Di parehas sa ubang lugar na di na gyud mahubsan ug tubig baha (Still we're better off here because when it floods, the floodwaters would recede a few hours later unlike in other areas where the floodwaters stay on)," Duterte said.

The vice mayor said she was also affected by Thursday's flooding and had to stay inside a mall for several hours while waiting for the waters to subside.

She appealed to residents to help in their drainage project by not throwing their garbage into canals. The drainage canals, however, will be there to ensure that the waters will be drained out in time.

Low-lying areas of the city, however, will have to contend with the floods for as long as the tide is high. (BOT)

Downpour to continue this week
By Carlo P. Mallo

THE heavy downpour that Davao City has been experiencing since last week will continue as an easterly wave prevails over Mindanao and the Visayas.

However, the weather will remain very humid with soaring temperatures.

Davao City and the rest of Southern Mindanao will continue to have cloudy days accompanied by rains and thunderstorms for the entire week.

According to a weather report of the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa), the rainy weather affecting the region will continue until the end of the week.

The Regional Disaster Coordinating Council (RDCC) has raised no weather alert even as flashfloods and severe flooding have already been experienced due to the heavy rains.

Just last Thursday, traffic was snarled and thousands of Dabawenyos were stranded after a heavy downpour, which lasted for more than three hours, flooded most of the city's main thoroughfares and side streets.

The streets of F. Torres, Jacinto extension corner Quirino Avenue, Davao Light portion of J.P. Laurel Avenue, and the whole stretch of Quimpo Boulevard was submerged in knee-deep waters.

As the rain started to fizzle out, rush hour traffic turned heavy and commuters started filling the streets.

For this week, temperatures will vary from 34 degrees Celsius to 24 degrees Celsius with humidity levels reaching a high of 88 percent and a low of only 55 percent.

Light to moderate winds will blow from the eastern direction, and coastal waters will range from slight to moderate.

'Buhawi' damages 6 Tibungco houses
By Rhodamae M. Hernandez

A FREAK tornado (buhawi) damaged six houses in Tibungco, at near-dawn Saturday, while the whole neighborhood was slept.

The tornado that whipped through purok 9 in Upper Panuntungan, Tibungco ripped off the roofs of the houses of the Bacorro, Sobrenega, Mailwas, Pascual, Iling and Maisip families.

The residents were already asleep when the tornado hit around 3 a.m. Saturday.

"Dili hinuon totally damaged, mapuy-an gud pero kailangan lang nga i-repair kay nangalangkat man ang sin sa atop. Pirteng kusoga gyud daw sa hangin nga nagtuyok (Except for the roofs, the houses are still intact and can be repaired. The residents said the wind was so strong and it was swirling)," SPO1 Roger Danila of the Bunawan police station said.

The estimated cost of the damages reached P150,000.

Danila added that City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) headed by Anabel Logo went to the area to check on the damages and extend help to the victims.

Records showed that last Friday night, almost 53 families were affected by flood at Teachers Village in Matina Crossing and the houses of another 57 families were flooded at Hillside subdivision in Buhangin.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) earlier said the strong rain was brought about by an easterly wave that prevails in Mindanao and Visayas. (With RCO)

Davao athletes to be honored
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

DAVAO City's finest athletes take center stage anew when the So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation holds its 14th So Kim Cheng Awards Night on July 22 at the Grand Regal Hotel.

The affair will be a star-studded one with the organizing Davao City Sports Council Inc. headed by its president, Davao City Councilor Peter T. Laviña, planning to invite no less than Senator Lito Lapid as the guest of honor.

Laviña said they would also invite Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and some members of the City Council during the Awards Night.

The So Kimg Cheng Sports Foundation is the only private organization that has been giving awards and citations to Davao's finest athletes for the past 14 years now.

Former Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) commissioner Leon "Biggoy" Montemayor, who is a friend of the So family, said the Foundation is planning to hold a grand affair for the 15th So Kim Cheng Awards Night next year.

"Next year, the So family will come up with a much bigger affair," Montemayor said.

Montemayor hosted a meeting among the DCSCI officers presided by Laviña Friday night at Villa Margarita where the final listing of nominees was discussed.

Lavina said they have decided to extend the deadline of submission of nominees from the different national sports associations since a number of NSAs have failed to submit their roster of honor athletes up to now.

Among those NSAs who have yet to submit their honor list were billiards, volleyball, and football.

MOA on Davao LRT and Samal Bridge Projects signed

DAVAO CITY – The Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), MCC Capital Inc., a UK-based financial institution, and local government units in the Davao Region have signed a memorandum of agreement (MoA) on the proposed Davao Light Rail Transit (LRT) and the construction of a bridge in Samal.

Merly Cruz, assistant secretary of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), reported that the projects were the results of the BIMP-EAGA investment conference held in this city last October.

“After follow through meetings and creation of a task force by the economic development committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC), we needed partners to provide us the resources. And so, this MoA signing formalizes the beginning of these projects,” she said.

Furthermore, Gov. Rodolfo del Rosario, chair of DIDP, said that the provisions of the MoA, which is an overall agreement to initiate projects, include funding by MCC Capital.

In a report prepared by Wendel Avisado, executive director of the DIDP, it was stated that “the LRT system will serve the coastal builtup area of Davao City, as well as neighboring areas in Davao del Sur (Sta. Cruz), and Davao del Norte (Panabo City).”

He said that the project cost was R240 billion in 1997 when it was first proposed. “It is also proposed to be 60 kilometers in length and a BOT (build, operate, transfer) project,” Avisado said.

In a statement, Nicasio Angelo J. Agustin, vice chairman of the Davao regional office of the Regional Development Council (RDC 11), said that “the railway system will be initially established traversing the Tagum City-Carmen-Panabo City-Davao City-Sta. Cruz-Digos City highway. These areas comprise the “linear urban corridor” that serves as the hub of economic activities and social integration in the Davao Region. The cities in the ‘linear urban corridor’ are also among the major ‘growth centers,’ intended to strengthen and enhance existing economic zones and market exchange centers,” he said.

Meanwhile, it was reported the Samal bridge costs R6.48 billion. It is proposed to be 1,200 meters in length with two lanes and to have a vertical clearance of 22 meters.

Agustin said that the Samal bridge is “critical to spur development in the Island Garden City of Samal, and will serve as the link to the other growth centers in Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental through the proposed roll-on/roll-off port facilities.”

On the proposed Davao Railway System, the China Railway Signalling and Communications Corp. (CRSC) has been tapped to construct the system.

It is an AAA credit grade enterprise specializing in railway construction, which corners over 70 percent of the market in nationwide railway system in China with over 50 years of railway construction system. The president of CRSC expressed confidence on the said projects.

“We will do our best to support the project and hope that the meeting can approve friendship between China and the Philippines,” he said.

MCC Capital Inc., through Mohammad Faisal Kasim, CEO, and John Tapp, director and company secretary, is optimistic about the projects. “We believe that MCC Capital can undertake the projects successfully because of the positive factors of growth in the Philippines when it comes to investments and business,” Kasim said. Nevertheless, Kasim added that less bureaucracy is important in doing good business here.

Vicente Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), is also enthusiastic about the development in the projects.

Another call center to operate in Davao
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THIS would be an opportunity for qualified and aspiring call center agents in Davao City.

A representative of a Manila-based call center company has already identified a site for their operation in the city this year.

Pinoy Votes: Sun.Star Election 2007 Coverage

But Teolulo T. Pasawa, National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac) director of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao, refused to identify the company.

"Hindi ko muna sasabihin, but the main reason for that investment is the establishment of an IT park here, Damosa has been declared as an IT park," Pasawa told Sun.Star Davao.

Pasawa said Nerbac's main function is to look for prospect investors.

"We are now concentrating on investment promotion," he said, adding that DTI's trade and investment mission to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia recently aims to attract investors.

The mission, conducted on February 23 to March 5, 2007, was a joint project of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao, Mindanao Economic and Development Council (Medco), Mindanao Business Council (MinBC), the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII), and DTI-Southern Mindanao.

The itinerary covered the cities of Riyadh, Dammam, and Jeddah.

Promoting Mindanao products and generating awareness about Mindanao as a potential supplier of goods and services are among the mission's objectives.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) is one of the industries that the local government unit of Davao City and the private sector is actively pushing.

More High-Paying Jobs Available to Filipinos
Mar.06, 2008 in Call Center Philippines Updates, Why Philippines?

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said the government will be able to realize its dream of providing more decent and high-paying jobs for the Filipino people now that the international businessmen have recognized the capability of the Philippines to become a developed country in the near future.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, on the other hand reported to the President that the Philippines ’stood tall’ in front of top businessmen of the world who recognized the Arroyo administration’s efforts to bring back the positive momentum of the economy.

Secretary Favila said the international community, especially top businessmen, acknowledged the growing economy of the Philippines under the Arroyo administration.

As a result of this, Favila said the Kenneth Tachman, CEO of Teletech, a leading business process outsourcing company in the world, had the intentions to expand their business in the Philippines.

Teletech is planning to establish five new call centers in the country. DTI is eyeing Camarines Sur in Bicol, Valencia town in Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City and Davao as new locations for Teletech’s expansion program.

Teletech is also planning to buy an island in the country to be developed as a tourist resort after learning that tourism is one of the biggest income earners of the Philippines.

Aside from call centers, Favila told the President that Prakash Hinduja, who owns big businesses in India and is one of the top 1,000 corporations in the world, also expressed his strong intention to expand his call center operations and establish a manufacturing company in the country.

Davao City Seeks to Attract Foreign Retirees
June 9th, 2008 --

Davao City Council last June 3 passed a proposal to initiate a comprehensive retirement program which will attract foreign nationals to retire in the city. The retirement program will be done by the City Planning and Development Office (CDO) and will focus on putting the infrastructure in place to setup retirement villages

A retirement village is a specially built community with health and insurance facilities in place along with 24 hour security. It also has recreational, cultural and educational facilities, and transport services for the retiree clients.

According to Councillor Pilar Braga: “If we put our acts together, we can compete with Thailand and Malaysia - two of the main destinations of retirees.”

Compared to western cities, Davao has year long Sunny or Rainy weather only. And it is geographically blessed to be always out of the path of typhoons. Since it is in the southern most part of the Philippines, the cost of living is comparebly lower than that of Manila. Expect that you will get more out of your retirement benefits with the cheap cost of living.

NEW BRIDGE. A worker cleans up the pavement of the newly-finished Gov. Generoso Bridge I which will have a soft-opening at 6 a.m. today, Tuesday, in time for the opening of classes. The formal opening will be on June 19. BING GONZALES

New bridge opens today
Mindanao Daily Mirror

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) will open the newly-constructed Gov. Generoso Bridge 1 to traffic today, June 10, in time for the opening of classes.

DPWH 11 regional director Jerome dela Rosa said the bridge opening was advanced to today to decongest traffic in the area and cut the travel time of southbound motorists.

“We have advanced the opening of the bridge because the completion was way ahead of schedule. The bridge was supposed to be completed on August 10,” dela Rosa said.

He attributed the speed of the construction to its modern foundation and the updated techniques and accelerated methods employed by the DPWH and Ciriaco Construction, the contractor for the bridge.

The bridge was finished in less than four months instead of the seven-month period that had been allotted.

“We were pressured by (DPWH) Secretary (Hermogenes) Ebdane to finish the bridge on or before the opening of classes,” dela Rosa said.

He said the formal opening of the bridge on June 19 will be one of the highlights of the activities being undertaken for the forthcoming 110th anniversary celebration of DPWH on June 23.

He also said President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo herself will probably be present at the formal opening.

The original bridge was demolished after a supporting column gave way on April 12 last year.

After several delays, the actual construction of a new bridge began on February 8 this year.

Dela Rosa said the bridge’s actual cost is P206 million, a good P10 million less than the P219 budgeted allocation. PIA 11 with reports from Jenny Jenzan DPWH 11

Lao is new Mindanao rep to Neda board
Sunstar Davao

VICENTE T. Lao, of the Regional Development Council (RDC)-Southern Mindanao has been appointed to represent Mindanao to the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) Board-Regional Development Committee (RDCom), in a consensus among RDC heads in Mindanao and the Regional Planning Development Board of Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (Armm).

Neda Southern Mindanao regional director Nicasio Angelo Agustin said, adding that RDCom is one of the committees of the Neda Board created by Executive Order 257 issued on December 15, 2003.

"RDCom's basic function is to monitor and formulate the implementation of policies that reduce regional growth disparities," Agustin told Sun.Star Davao. RDCom also promotes equitable allocation of resources among regions.

The RDCom is chaired by Neda's director general and has the following members: Secretaries of Department of Budget and Management (DBM) and DILG, three RDC chairs representing Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao, and four regional development experts from the private sector and academe.

Agustin said Lao's tasks include the articulation of Mindanao's concerns in the RDCom, harmonization of differences among various agencies in Mindanao, and coordination of efforts involving inter-regional concerns and development.

Lao, who is on his first term as RDC-Southern Mindanao chair, is a private sector representative to RDC. He also chairs the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) and concurrently serves as Country Director of the Bimp-Eaga Business Council. (JGRS with Press release)

Arroyo to inaugurate bridge on June 19
By Carlo P. Mallo
Sunstar Davao

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in Davao City is set to open the newly constructed Governor Generoso Bridge I on June 19.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has confirmed her attendance during the inauguration of the P206-million project.

She will also inaugurate the multi-million Mati Public Market on the same day.

DPWH Southern Mindanao Regional Director Jerome dela Rosa on Monday said the bridge and approach construction is already complete and that it is just undergoing the curing period.

"Instead of the usual one month curing period, it will only be one week with the help of curing chemicals that will speed up the process," dela Rosa said.

The DPWH earlier intended to open the bridge simultaneously with the opening of classes Tuesday. Finishing touches, such as the installation of road signs and markers, are still on going.

Despite not being able to beat the class opening deadline, dela Rosa said, the construction of the bridge was completed 70 days earlier than scheduled.

The P206-million bridge was constructed by Ciriaco Construction for a duration of only 140 days.

The original Governor Generoso Bridge became impassable in April 2007 after one of its piers collapsed. The old bridge was then demolished, causing horrendous traffic jams.

Coconut oil sludge spills into gulf

By Jeffrey M. Tupas
Mindanao Bureau
First Posted 22:35:00 06/09/2008

DAVAO CITY – Some 1,500 liters of coconut oil sludge spilled into the Davao Gulf on Saturday.

Leo Avila, chair of the Davao Gulf Management Council, said the spill was discovered early morning of Saturday by the Coast Guard that immediately conducted quick response operations to contain the spill.

The PCG’s Marine Environment Protection Unit contained the spill on Saturday afternoon, according to Avila. Avila is also a city councilor and heads the committee on environment and natural resources.
Citing report from the PCG, Avila said the coconut oil sludge might have come from a holding tank of one of the coconut plants located in Sasa.

He said initial investigation showed that the source of the sludge was most likely the Bio Energy 8, reportedly owned by the family of Senator Miguel Zubiri.

“Investigations are still going on. I was told that the management of the Bio Energy was already told about this and if proven, they will be asked to pay an administrative fine and the cost of the operations conducted to contain the spill,” Avila said in a telephone interview.
The PCG said the spill was triggered by the continued downpour and flood that submerged many parts of the city.

“There really was no major damage as the coconut oil is biodegradable,” Avila said.

Davao listed in DOT's priority Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism program
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (7 June) -- Davao is already in the priority for the Greet (Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism) program of the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the details are being finalized but this would come after the three pilot areas are completed.

The Davao area will have four sites and two of these are in Davao City said DOT XI regional director Sonia Garcia.

Durano explained that under Greet program the focus also will be the participation of the community.

He cited that in Donsol, Sorsogon the community had champion the "Greet" through their whale shark watching. The other areas are in Bohol where the chocolate hills are located and in Siargo in the Caraga Region.

Under the program, they need to level the playing field by giving the community easy access to skills, capital, market opportunities plus value formation.

In Donsol, he said 60 fishing boats were transformed into tourists boats that will ferry visitors to the area where they will get first hand look of the whale sharks and the fishermen as "butanting" tour guide.

Right now, he said, the Donsol community are advocating other communities by using tourism to gain livelihood.

"We will not move in the area unless we are done in a community," he said.

Durano was hinting for glamorous camping or 'Glamping' in Mt. Apo. The place is ideal to try out the concept among foreign tourists who would experience culture and nature through camping and yet get high-end reception just like in five-star hotels.

He pictured 'glamping' as one that involves safari-style adventure with champagne, fine dining, rustic luxury of air-conditioned tents, hot water and other amenities.

He said this type of adventure has become popular among wealthy travelers from North America, Europe and Africa where resorts offer king-sized bed with Persian rugs and others. (PIA) [top]

FDC spending up to P800M in Davao ethanol plant
06/10/2008 | 04:09 AM

MANILA, Philippines - Gotianun-led Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC) is spending between P700 million and P800 million for an ethanol plant that will use by-products of its sugar refineries.

FDC Chairman Jonathan T. Gotianun said the plant, which FDC seeks to build within the year, would be located within the Davao Sugar Central Co., Inc. premises in Mindanao.

"We’ve already undertaken studies for the ethanol plant. There are no definite plans yet, but we’re interested to pursue it," he said.

Mr. Gotianun said FDC would like to prioritize the expansion program of Pacific Sugar Holdings Corp., which owns two sugar mills and manages sugar plantations.

FDC bought Pacific Sugar, whose production accounts for 25% of Mindanao’s total sugar production, from ALG Holdings Corp. through a share-swap agreement in June 2007.

Pacific Sugar owns milling companies Davao Sugar, Cotabato Sugar Central Co., Inc. and High Yield Sugar Farms Corp.

"When completed, Pacific Sugar’s milling capacity will increase by 55% while its refining capacity will be triple the existing capacity [of 2.15 million 50-kilogram bags of sugar]," Mr. Gotianun said.

The sugar manufacturing business contributed P596 million to FDC’s 2007 revenues and P51 million to its total net income. Last year, Philippine sugar production grew by 5% to 2.23 million metric tons amid rising sugar prices.

FDC President and Chief Operating Officer Josephine G. Yap earlier said they would sell more shares and raise P35 billion to build the ethanol plant.

But the capital-raising activity was foiled because of unfavorable market conditions.

Ms. Yap said the plant, which will have an initial production capacity of 100,000 liters per day, would be operational by 2010, in time for the legal mandate for gasoline to contain a 5% mix of ethanol by 2009.

FDC is the listed holding company of the Filinvest group. The group’s principal activities are carried out through its real estate, banking and financial services and sugar divisions. - BusinessWorld

do you think sakto ni nga explanation why overhead atong electrical lines and other utilities?

Having utilities buried underground poses a major safety risk in earthquake-prone regions. Many of the fires that arose from the Great Hanshin quake (Kobe/Osaka/Kansai region) were due to gas mains rupturing. Imagine electrical wires coming into contact with the underground gas mains if both are buried in near proximity.
