Proposal to create Davao City Sports Commission to be reviewed

Rico Biliran/MindaNews
Thursday, 12 June 2008 09:28

With the summer games finally over, the office of Councilor Halila Sudagar, president of the Sangguniang Kabataan Federation, will focus on ‘reviewing’ the proposed ordinance creating the Davao City Sports Commission (DCSC).

DCSC, initiated by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William “Butch” Ramirez, failed to make it to the plenary in the previous council after enduring delays.

Former SK president April Marie Dayap had conducted two committee hearings but reportedly failed to hold a final inquiry before her term ended last year.
Sudagar, chair of the committee on youth and sports of the city council, said she would form a technical working group that would review the proposed ordinance.

She said she sees an “easy passage” of the proposed ordinance with the support shown by her fellow councilors.
DCSC will serve as the umbrella body of all private and public sports associations in the city.

This city’s sports stakeholders are longing for the passage of the ordinance. The late Vic Sai, said the best thing the councilors could do is support the passage of the DCSC.
Sai, who passed away last March 16, was sports editor of the The Mindanao Daily Mirror and president of the Davao City Sports Council Inc., which is composed of the regional chapters of National Sports Association (NSA).

The council is now headed by Councilor Peter Laviña who helped draft the constitution and by-laws of the commission and had said the DCSC can help the PSC discover potential Olympic medalists.
In a speaking engagement early last year, Ramirez said he would donate P500,000 “as seed money” for the commission once it is approved by the city council.

The commission is envisioned to implement an integrated sports development program as well as sustain sports training activities, particularly for outstanding athletes and help the city government identify, plan and manage sports facilities required for the training of athletes and conduct of sports tournaments. hwat? di public holiday diyan ngayon? why why why??? dito nga after christmas which is december 26 holiday pa...they called it Boxing day...

so normal lang diyan ngayon (may office, klase...?)

u heard me right. its officially considered as a national holiday but its a working holiday. people go to work and students go to class. arroyo gave a presidential order making june 9 a non-working holiday instead of the 12th. so in a way, pinag palit nya ang june 9 and june 12. she called that working holiday economics. which i find so stupid and a degrace to the national holiday!

;21644103']kung ako lang, i dont like the idea na davao is representing mindanao most of the time

id rather davao represent davao region lang and let another mindanao city represent the island..:) masyadong kinakarga ng davao ang pag pa good image sa mindanao (peace and order, economic progress, tourism etc) pero its getting dragged down din by the problems in the other places in the island..

selfish but true :( (sad hinoon na truth)

mu-generalize na pod sila nga davao is mindanao (i sense something is wrong in that statement:lol:). there's a lot of other progressive cities beside davao. davao is not the only one. pero tama ka diha yet.

BPOs, schools match needs in Mindanao meet
INQUIRER.net
First Posted 18:24:00 06/12/2008

DAVAO CITY, Philippines -- Academic administrators are meeting with business process outsourcing (BPO) firms here this week to ensure a better match between local workforce training and the requirements of the global outsourcing industry.

The BPO Human Resource & Recruitment Forum, organized by ICT Davao, Inc., is the second in a series of events designed to accelerate the sustainable development of this city as the leading information, communication and technology (ICT) hub in Mindanao.

The forum will brief local academic institutions on trends in the BPO industry and provide benchmarks in English language capability and other skills. This will enable schools to improve their curricula and anticipate changes in the industry's workforce needs.

"BPOs are particularly interested in schools with a strong English-language focus throughout their entire academic program," said Joji Bian, president of JIB e-Academy and of the Philippine Call Center Alliance.

The forum will also be attended by industry representatives from the cities of General Santos and Zamboanga, which likewise have a significant number of schools offering BPO training.

These cities, as well as Iligan, Cotabato and Marawi, expect to benefit from the development of Davao as an entry point for BPO locators, according to USAID's Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program, which, with the oversight of the Mindanao Economic Development Council, is helping to improve IT infrastructure and generate employment in the island-region.

XMG Asia Pacific, which analyses trends in the global BPO industry, has put Davao at par with other emerging alternative offshoring cities like Jakarta and Montevideo.

Davao's workforce is estimated to be almost double that of Cebu, which currently has the country's second largest concentration of BPO workers. Other Mindanao cities, such as Zamboanga and General Santos, have skilled labor pools similar in size to that of Cebu.

nag renovate ang g-mall sa kanilang interior, at last lagyan na nila ng kisame, tapos na sila mag lagay ng mga supports at sa tingin ko parang sosy naman. nice ito pag matapos. the elevators are getting facelifts too.

full blast ang construction ng central park hotel at ng commercial center in front of chimes mall.

balik smooth traffic ang bankerohan area after the re-opening of the bridge.

Re: Gmall...Well its about time.:banana::banana: pangit jud kaayo ang mall na walay ceiling. buti nmn naisipan nilang irenovate ang buong mall. And diba ang paint sa labas this year lang ata. i remember nung wala pang paint ang G-Mall Bldg. ang pangit. parang cemento lng and may blue na parang pa zigzag. basta ang pangit.
Re: Calinan... Seriously? NCCC and Gaisano are planning to build a mall there? is it gonna be a mall or just a commercial center? baka rumors lng nmn yan ha. i remember in Kidapawan, nung elememntary pa ako, there were rumors that JS Gaisano is building a mall there hangang ngaun na COllege grad na ako wala paring JS dun. Prego Café

by Blogie on 12 May 2008 {Coffee Shop}

At the 5th floor of Gaisano South Citimall in downtown Davao is a simple little coffee shop called Prego Cafe. I rarely go there because it’s almost never along my usual routes, but I enjoy each visit. Yesterday I had to go to CD-R King in Gaisano South (the other outlet in Davao is always jam-packed), so I made sure to drop in at Prego.

It’s an unpretentious café, with simple offerings at reasonable prices. But what few food and drink choices they do have are all very satisfying. As the name might suggest, they’re an Italian place. Their coffee is Italian (can’t quite remember the brand name of the beans, though) and they serve superb panini and some pasta dishes.

What’s closest to my heart is their Ham & Cheese Sandwich. The ham, which they make themselves, is deliciously tasty and the cheese is mozzarella, if I’m not mistaken. Their iced tea is good, too — it’s not the instant stuff that other coffee shops serve.

The usual crowd at Prego are college students (but thankfully not the noisy types). You also see families there once in a while, like those coming from grocery shopping. All in all, a pretty good mix of patrons.

Actually, one reason I don’t hang out there is that they don’t have Wifi yet. The owner, my good friend Rochelle Venuti, told me they’ve already applied for a DSL account, but there seems to be a technical glitch on the mall’s side. Hopefully, though, they’ll be able to get their wireless Internet up and running soon enough. (Good thing that both Smart and Globe have strong 3G signals there.)

Prego Cafe is located at the floor where the cinemas are in Gaisano South (which Dabawenyos still call "JS Gaisano"). Since it’s in a mall, they’re open daily, from 10:00 AM to 8:30 PM.

Jack’s Ridge Peak Perfection
By Michael Ebro Dakudao

THE area in the vicinity of the Shrine Hills in Matina, at 1,191 feet above sea level, was once the headquarters and evacuation site of soldiers of the Japanese Imperial Army. Understandable because the lofty perch provides the perfect amount of solitude and overlooks the scenic beauty of Davao City, the surrounding mountains and the Davao Gulf.

It was in May 1945 when the American soldiers landed on the Davao Gulf to recapture the city putting a bloody end to the Japanese Occupation. In preparation for this anticipated final showdown of forces, it was reported that the Matina Hills had been dug and built with tunnels said to be about 50 meters apart from each other.

Japanese soldiers labored and lived in them. The place was also a storage area for the Japanese Imperial Force’s artillery and ammunition. There were stories circulated about an Admiral of the Japanese Imperial Navy who had buried treasures, supposedly taken from several Asian countries and brought to Davao, in one of these caves/tunnels.

Yeah, right. It is precisely the strong belief in the existence of hidden Japanese treasures among the unthinking and greedy Indiana Joneses with the get-rich quick mentality which led to the desecration and destruction of the historical Japanese Cemetery in Mintal. Countless unique Japanese tombs built out of huge, carved rocks which survived WWII, were blown to rubbles in 1990 by supposedly well-armed men in uniform who came in trucks.
And in the end, when the last stick of dynamite was blown, no hidden treasure nor even a miniature golden Buddha was ever found. The Mintal Japanese Cemetery was the real tourist attraction of Davao City as it had a captive market among the Davao-born Japanese nationals who would visit on a pilgrimage annually.

“I was still a little boy when I used to play in the Japanese-built caves that dotted the Matina Hills which is now the GSIS Heights Subdivision.

The whole of GSIS had six or seven caves. One of these caves’ tunnels had access all the way to Matina Pangi. While another one had a cannon that the Japanese soldiers used in their defense against the advancing Americans in the Liberation of 1945. We played with this cannon until it was taken away by Col. Ernesto Macasaet and the ROTC members of the University of Mindanao,” recalled Carmelito “Meloy” Mercado. He added, “And many of the caves were sealed, which is such a shame because these tunnels have historical value in our city’s history. Some of the caves even had Japanese trucks in them. Probably, they are still in there up to now.”

It was the area’s historical value plus the memories of his youth which would later prompt Mercado to buy a three-hectare property in the Matina Hills in October, 1995. He recalled, “I was traveling abroad in 1993 and 1994 when I observed that most resorts were located on mountains. Even the millionaires’ row was also up there. I bought the property to build a similar resort of my dreams.”

Mercado planned and designed the layout of his resort himself. He also applied his degree in Agriculture to good use. “I was after the preservation and conservation of the natural beauty of the land, respecting its natural contour so that it would not get flooded and in the process, also protect the low-lying areas.”

It took Mercado three years for his resort project to be operational. Jack’s Ridge, which came from Mercado’s radio call, the ‘Jack Rabbit’, was coined by his daughter, businesswoman Macky Mercado, as an appropriate name for their establishment. The Mercado family finally opened the restaurant in November 25, 1999, to host the Welcome Dinner for the Mindanao Fruit Congress. He said, “I didn’t want to open it just yet, but my friends talked me into it.”

The year 2000 was a difficult time for the Mercado family as the patriarch recalled, “For one year, we just didn’t know what to do. We had no system in place to run the business. It took us a year to learn, through the trial-and-error method, and gain the experience to manage the whole business.”

A year after, Jack’s Ridge was starting to make its own mark. The Taklobo Restaurant became popular not only for its delectable dishes but for the commanding view of Davao City and the Gulf it offers its clients. “The Taklobo Restaurant’s best sellers include Grilled Panga and Tiyan ng Bariles, Chicken barbecue and the All Seasons Vegetables,” said Macky Mercado who manages the place. But my dear friend, Dr. Gigi Angeles, believes that it’s the Taklobo Kare-kare which is simply the best in town.

At night, local bands play at the Kai’s Bar and Grill where businessmen loosen up to enjoy alcoholic beverages and ihaw-ihaw delights, listen to music and even dance the night away. For the more laid back adults, the BMW Piano Bar is a more relaxing venue. Guests here are encouraged to join in the singing after a few rounds of beer to fuel their guts. For those guests who just want to relax, meditate and enjoy nature, there is the Amphitheater for that.

Jack’s Ridge’s other facilities include the Penmar Halls for wedding receptions and conventions, conference room for small meetings, the cottages for guests who want to sleep in the midst of Jack’s Ridge’s lush surroundings, Karlo’s Coffee Station for your caffeine fix, and a souvenir shop for the pasalubong to take home. There’s also Kat’s Pool, named after the photographer of a daughter, where guests could cool off.

“Jack’s Ridge, since the start, is a family-oriented establishment. Davaoeños would usually come here for weekend outings with family members, friends, and balikbayan guests. The place offers good facilities, delicious food, and friendly service at affordable rates.

Jack’s Ridge is also a good venue to watch our local talents perform their mighty best. Come August, Manila’s best bands usually perform here in celebration of the Kadayawan Festival of the City,” informed Macky.

And to think that it’s not over yet as Meloy Mercado still has more developments planned for construction for the dining resort to be truly considered a haven for outdoor enthusiasts of all persuasions.
Thanks Kat Mercado for the photos used on this page.

Aw, hehehe. i have reasons why i oppose open sky policy biya jech like what i said it will only kill our local airline industry.and even if people say that the market will benefit a lot from it. still i believe that we have to protect our airlines cause they simply can't compete with those giant foreign airline companies.

and even if it meant bringing the airfare to its lowest, what is saving a few peso and causing some peoples work at risk in the process? kay if airlines like Cathay can easily offer flights to almost anywhere in the phil that will mean strong competition to cebu or asian spirit. and cebu nor asianSpirit or even PAL cant compete jud biya with that of cathay or others. they might loose the competition and go bankrupt. Especially with the filipino colonial mentality kay if ever foreign airlines will start serving flights to all Phil cities for sure people will prefer foreign airlines than our CEB or PAL and especially our small filipino airlines like SeaAir or Asian Spirit. That's the said reality. cause Filipinos (majority if not all)think that foreign products or services are superior and are way better than what our local companies have to offer diba? admit it.

and Would u rather have foreign airlines serving phil cities than our own? syempre mas gwapo jud ng Filipino pride nga Our airlines dominate the Phil Skies diba? let foreign airlines serve Major Phil Cities lang but not totally dominate the phil skies. and another point, ok lang mn pd ang Open Skies Policy kung naay reciprocity. if our local airlines get the same treatment and privileges to foreign soil like what we would offer to foreign airlines.

Then again, this is just My Opinion. the thought that runs in this small space between my two little ears. hehehe. Just a thought!

I dont think so. You think that open skies policy would actually replace CEBU PAC and PAL from serving flights to and fro the local cities in the country? I cant imagine VIVA MACAU or TIGER AIRWAYS serving flights from Manila to Davao or Cebu to Davao (that's not their market).

I understand your sentiment bro. But I dont believe that having an open skies policy would actually threaten the local airlines such as Cebu Pac or PAL.

The Open Sky Policy will increase the number of incoming flights from other countries to Davao. And not from one Philippine city to another Philippine city, as what you have stated above.

You said that this may risk the jobs of a number of people? I dont think so. But for the sake of argument, let's say ur right and it would. Let's consider the number of jobs in the local aviation industry that might be affected and compare it to the number of jobs in the tourism industry that would be produced due to the influx of tourists in the city brought by the increase of incoming flights from other countries to our city! W/c do u think would weigh more?

Also...with regard to ur fear (which needs to be more expounded and supported by facts and stats), bro lemme quote a friend of mine..

This is another slap on the face of Save Our Skies (SOS) coalition which is opposing the entry of foreign air carriers in the country via the “open skies” regime. SOS raises the bogey that this would kill the domestic airlines.

Well, here’s another proof that SOS is lying like the Palace occupant.

The Philippines ranked 3rd in the world in air travel growth after India and Mexico. Our No. 1 airline Cebu Pacific recorded a whooping 47 percent growth rate. And this happened in spite of four years already of the Clark experiment on “open skies.”

Proves once more that the fears of SOS are unfounded.

- Councilor Peter Laviña (http://ptlavina.wordpress.com/category/open-skies/)

Oh well, here they go again scaring us against “open skies.”

The claim of the Save Our Skies (SOS) that opening the aviation industry would kill domestic airlines simply do not match the numbers.

The “pocket open skies” at Clark is now four years old, and certainly Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific have not folded up. In fact, on the contrary, the two main local air carriers never had it so good during these past years. Both continue to post record load factors, sales, passengers and profits.

PAL particularly went out of its receivership last year after its utter failure over a decade ago in mishandling loans and personnel.

Instead of trumpeting this old refrain that local airlines would close shop if foreign airlines fly in, SOS should help prepare domestic carriers for the eventual “open skies” regime. The ASEAN is implementing this policy starting this year among capital cities, and eventually among other major destinations in the 10-nation common market.

Davao’s own effort for a “pocket open skies” to lure more foreign airlines to serve this premier city in southern Philippines had been blocked at Malacanang by this scare tactic. The city’s new airport is now five years old but no new airlines had been added to serve it. Lacking this vital direct airlinks has denied the city more tourists, more trade and better travel routes for Mindanao’s OFWs.

- Councilor Peter Laviña (http://ptlavina.wordpress.com/category/open-skies/)

Let's consider the number of jobs in the local aviation industry that might be affected and compare it to the number of jobs in the tourism industry that would be produced due to the influx of tourists in the city brought by the increase of incoming flights from other countries to our city! W/c do u think would weigh more?

i agree with you tj. open skies means more traveling opportunities for the filipino traveller. look what is happening now, PAL just keeps on announicng that they will open flights from davao to this destination. but ano na? hanggang announcement lang. PAL is blocking alot of international airlines that like to fly to davao from their place. these are lines are, viva macau, air macau, asiana, qatar to name a few. grabe talaga itong PAL. Now CebuPac is joining the fray off opposing. jeeezzzz....:ohno:

I fully agree with your takes on the issues guys. These local airlines are bane to the interconnectivity we want to usher in our city. While cities around the world welcome more airlines to serve them, we on our side are crippled by the selfish whims of our local airlines and thereby held our tourism development hostage in this regard.

^^ Thnx bro! I'm pro open skies. Coz I'd rather consider the benefits that the general public would get (lower fares, more flights, more jobs, more tourists) from this policy than what the minority (possible effect on the sales of Cebu Pac or Pal) may face.

Simple as this, the more flight out and into your city, the more people to discover and experience what your city can offer. Ultimately, it's the whole city (meaning the residents) that benefits from it.

But for the sake of argument, let's say ur right and it would. but still having an open skies policy would open the country for foreign airlines to serve flights anywhere in the country. consider this scenario, as of today, SilkAir-the regional arm of singapore Airlines, offers daily singapore-davao flights via cebu. and with an open skies policy that would give foreign airlines the privilege of serving flights to anywhere in RP. Like American Airlines to serve a MLA-LAX (L.A.) flight (to compete with PAL) and they could have an option to extend their flight to LAX-DVO via MLA. or say CEB-MLA-LAX. that way they will offer a direct competition to that of PAL for MLA-LAX and both PAL, CEB, AirPhil, PAL Express for the CEB-MLA and MLA-DVO flight. do u see the posibilities? so with Open skies we can no longer control the airlines that wants to offer flights anywhere in the country and in the process, we can no longer protect our own airlines.

and we all know that PAL had just been successfully rehabilitated after years of heavy losses (forcing it to sell some of its planes to cover the loss thus reducing its fleet of 53 to 22 in 1998). and with Open Skies, PAL would have to face competition from other airlines aside from the fact that it is having a hard time dominating the Domestic market with CEB's strong lead. and why should we need to protect PAL? because it has always carried the pride of evry filipino being the national flag carrier and having its distinction as asia's first airline.

and i do believe that our govt should weight the pros and cons in every issue. and you simply cant produce a win-loose situation here. we should find a workable solution that would benefit the tourism industry without compromising other industries. for with the high cost of fuels, our aviation industry dont need another albatross around its neck.

sorry but i dont agree with your reasoning bro. i am pro open skies.

the only reason why PR and 5J are blocking the entry of foreign airlines here in davao is that they lack airplanes. this is not good reasoning. if they cant serve the routes to and from davao internationally, then why block foreign airlines who want to serve the DIA. that is selfish thinking on PR's and 5J's part.

‘Hulk’ debuts today:cheers:
at GMall cinemas

"The Incredible Hulk," a follow-up to the 2003 hit adaptation of the green superhero monster, will open at Gaisano Mall Cinemas today.

"Untraceable" opened last Wednesday.

Extended for another week are "Caregiver", "The Chronicle of Narnia: Prince Caspian," "Kung Fu Panda," and "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of Crystal Skull." "What Happens in Vegas" will be extended until Friday.

"The Incredible Hulk"

Directed by Louis Leterrier, this latest Hulk adventure will return to the roots of the long-running comic series, combining a well-developed character storyline with incredible action and fun. Zak Penn, who previously collaborated with Marvel on "X2" and "X-Men: The Last Stand", wrote the script.

"The Incredible Hulk" kicks off an all-new, explosive and action-packed epic of one of the most popular superheroes of all time. In this new beginning, scientist Bruce Banner (Edward Norton) despe-rately hunts for a cure to the gamma radiation that poi-soned his cells and unleashes the unbridled force of rage within him: The Hulk.

Living in the shadows — cut off from a life he knew and the woman he loves, Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) — Banner struggles to avoid the obsessive pursuit of his ne-mesis, General Thunderbolt Ross (William Hurt), and the military machinery that seeks to capture him and brutally exploit his power.

As all three grapple with the secrets that led to The Hulk's creation, they are confronted with a monstrous new adversary known as The Abomination (Tim Roth), whose destructive strength exceeds even The Hulk's own. And on June 13, 2008, one scientist must make an agonizing final choice: accept a peaceful life as Bruce Banner or find heroism in the creature he holds inside — The Incredible Hulk.

my take on this is that, granting we have it, how sustainable is it? ok like for some months with the novelty factor, but after that?

sure, it's open, there's more operators, but it's a tighter market still. with the spiralling fuel costs, what i can see is more reduced routes, not expanding. well i hope i'm wrong.

Ram's Diner opens in Ma-a
Sunstar Davao

SHOWING just how robust the local economy of Davao is, Ram's Diner has opened another restaurant in the southern area of the city last Sunday.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Ruby May Magtoto, the owner of Ram's Diner together with her husband Ram, said that although she is exasperated with the preparations that accompany with the opening of a restaurant, she still feels excited that they are opening another branch.

Ram's, which originally sold "lechon manok," or roasted chicken, started in 1996. "The restaurants were started in 1998," Mrs. Magtoto said.

Apart from the opening of the new Ram's Diner restaurant at DBP Village along Ma-a Road, the Magtoto couple also embarked on a new business, an apartelle.

Dubbed as Enrico's Apartelle, it occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the three-storey building, which houses the new outlet of Ram's Diner.

"There are ten rooms on the second and third floors, while there are three doors for the two story apartelles," Mrs. Magtoto added.

Asked why she and her husband decided to venture into the hotel business, Magtoto simply said it was something new to them and that they wanted to give it a shot. (CPM)

May naghahanap ng good news sa kabila. Eto good news. Pero dito nga lang.

Davao City seen as emerging alternative outsourcing hub

A recently concluded XMG Global Offshoring Leadership Study revealed that Davao City in Mindanao will be a viable alternative site three years from now.

The study predicts that organizations formulating technology and procedural solutions to integrate a large manpower base into their global delivery centers will be at the forefront of the offshoring and outsourcing industry as the labor arbitrage model continues. This result is part of an ongoing study conducted between January to March, which focuses on forecasting global demand for offshoring and outsourcing services and site optimization of emerging cities. Among emerging alternative offshoring cities cited in the study were Montevideo, Uruguay; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Casablanca, Morocco.

Despite periods of turmoil in the Mindanao region, outsourcing vendors and captives who participated in the study are very bullish about Davao City primarily due to the area’s larger population of untapped qualified resources compared to Cebu City in the Visayas north of Minda-nao. The study highlighted that competition in Cebu is nearing saturation as talent ramp-up continues.

Among others, the study highlighted the population of Davao as considerably higher than other Tier-2 offshoring cities globally. In the Philippine context, Davao City’s population is 71% higher than Cebu, 499% larger than Olongapo-Subic, 333% higher than Angeles-Clark and 340% larger than Baguio City. The city’s estimated work force is twice of Cebu, nine times of Subic, seven times of Clark and six times of Baguio. This has not even taken to account the manpower pool at nearby cities and provinces of Davao City.

According to the study, Davao City has various educational institutions annually yielding a higher number of IT-and BPO-qualified graduates than Subic, Clark and Baguio by 689%, 278% and 40% respectively.

Telecom facilities, transportation networks and public transport systems are already in place in Davao City. However, XMG indicated the need to further improve and modernize these services; otherwise, business continuity and disaster recovery plans will go unfulfilled.

Overall, the attractiveness of Davao City is greatly affected by the negative perception about the Mindanao region as a whole. On February, a travel advisory was released by US Consular Affairs warning their citizens on the risk of traveling in Central, Western and Southern Mindanao due to security and safety reasons, which includes terrorism.

XMG researcher Camille Lumbang said, "Although these travel warnings are empirically grounded from actual hostile incidents in Mindanao, it should be emphasized that these are only isolated incidents from specific areas. There is a challenge then to substantiate and prove that such occurrences do not pose a general security threat for Davao City.

"Compared to other cities in the South, Davao City is very promising and it is seen to be the next-generation city that would benefit large captives provided that risk issues are addressed properly," concludes Ms. Lumbang.

Construction of Ayala Center to start before year ends

THE Floirendo-owned Damosa Land Inc. is pouring in investments in the real estate industry with three major projects lined up for implementation this year.

At the celebration of the company's Diamond Anniversary on Monday, the company unveiled its three major projects for 2008, starting off with the much- anticipated joint venture with Ayala Land Inc. involving the development of the prime nine-hectare property of the Floirendos in Bajada, Davao City to a mall complex.

In an interview, Edgar Villaver, general manager of Damosa Land Inc., said the project dubbed as Ayala Center Davao will be a joint venture of Ayala Land Inc. and Damosa Land Inc. as wekk as affiliate companies of Damosa, such as Anflocor and Pitrade.

Villaver said the first phase of the program will be the construction of the business processing outsourcing part of the project.

"It will be started by June 2008, while the retail and mall complex will be started by the end of the year," Villaver said.

Apart from the business processing outsourcing and mall complexes, the proposed land development will also include the construction of a hotel complex and commercial offices. The first phase of the project is to be completed by June 2009.

Another project of Damosa Land is the development of a residential-hotel-resort complex within the 33-hectare property of the Floirendos in Limao in the Island Garden City of Samal.

According to Villaver, the project will start in the third quarter of this year.

Damosa Land is also expected to start the construction of the Mindanao Jockey and Country Club, a racetrack, residential, and eco-tourism park, at the end of the year.

"It will consist of a residential area, an eco-tourism park, and of course the race track," Villaver said.

The Mindanao Jockey and Country Club will be constructed in Marapangi, Toril.

Among emerging alternative offshoring cities cited in the study were Montevideo, Uruguay; Jakarta, Indonesia; and Casablanca, Morocco.

but still having an open skies policy would open the country for foreign airlines to serve flights anywhere in the country. consider this scenario, as of today, SilkAir-the regional arm of singapore Airlines, offers daily singapore-davao flights via cebu. and with an open skies policy that would give foreign airlines the privilege of serving flights to anywhere in RP. Like American Airlines to serve a MLA-LAX (L.A.) flight (to compete with PAL) and they could have an option to extend their flight to LAX-DVO via MLA. or say CEB-MLA-LAX. that way they will offer a direct competition to that of PAL for MLA-LAX and both PAL, CEB, AirPhil, PAL Express for the CEB-MLA and MLA-DVO flight. do u see the posibilities? so with Open skies we can no longer control the airlines that wants to offer flights anywhere in the country and in the process, we can no longer protect our own airlines.

and we all know that PAL had just been successfully rehabilitated after years of heavy losses (forcing it to sell some of its planes to cover the loss thus reducing its fleet of 53 to 22 in 1998). and with Open Skies, PAL would have to face competition from other airlines aside from the fact that it is having a hard time dominating the Domestic market with CEB's strong lead. and why should we need to protect PAL? because it has always carried the pride of evry filipino being the national flag carrier and having its distinction as asia's first airline.

and i do believe that our govt should weight the pros and cons in every issue. and you simply cant produce a win-loose situation here. we should find a workable solution that would benefit the tourism industry without compromising other industries. for with the high cost of fuels, our aviation industry dont need another albatross around its neck.
my thoughts dhwell, i think this is a protectionist attitude of a reclusive era. imo there are more advantages it can derive than fear of hopelessnes in losing in the game per se. does it really matter if the need to protect a national carrier a matter of pride? whos going to benefit if it is protected from competition? only the vested interests of a few. whos going to dictate fare price if theres no free market force? to balance off quality of service to the riding public? if no one can stop a national carrier from price hike, can the average filipino afford the necessity and convenience of flying? how is the total pransportation picture of the country perceived. advancing? everything becomes affected, like cargo, export and import sectors, etc.

while it is true, it may open international carriers to get through the whole countrys points of destinations, will it really kill domestic industry just that? are all these destinations have viable traffic load factor to venture into and gamble? there were attempts that opened general santos, zamboanga, some parts of northern luzon for direct international service but did not succeed. in the domestic front, can foreign carriers compete with local airline services? i bet too costly for them to engage in the domestic price war of airfares and maintaining the ruote. to me the airports that couls take advantage are only a few in clark, manila, cebu and davao. And am predicting iloilo airport if it uses boracay island for a selling come on. had silkair not started the davao singapore service(i would say very successful route), do you think there is domestic carrier to even start servicing the potential of the route?

Hmmm, i may sound like I'm an advocate of protectionism here but trust me, im not. and personally, i also believe that Open Skies actually may have its advantages especially in a growing market such as that of davao. And true, through open skies we may bring the airfare down for the ordinary juan to afford.and the list goes on and on. and im not totally against an open skies policy. Allow me to quote the last 4lines of my previous statement

and i do believe that our govt should weight the pros and cons in every issue. and you simply cant produce a win-loose situation here. we should find a workable solution that would benefit the tourism industry without compromising other industries. for with the high cost of fuels, our aviation industry dont need another albatross around its neck.

all im saying is that we may need to further study the Open SKies policy if it would totally produce a Win-Win situation. and we dont have to rush things to avoid future regrets. like what i said we must find a workable solution that is more acceptable to both parties concern. i beleive that theres more to Open Skies than just more routes or a cheaper airfare. and we need to weight the benefits and the disadvantages

and another thing if airlines actually have intentions to fly to a specific destination they can always apply for airtalks. and if my memory serves me right, i have read a news article saying that DIA had given permits to 30+ airlines to make use of the Davao airport and only 6 had actual flights to and from davao. so what made u think that with Open SKies more airines will serve the davao route when in fact the permits have already been given and these airlines already have a go signal to add Davao to its list of destinations.

in my opinion lang ha. just a thought.

Davao City now in DOT's “Greet” program (http://positivenewsmedia.net/am2/publish/Tourism_24/Davao_City_now_in_DOT_s_Greet_program.shtml)

DAVAO CITY, June 10 (PNA) – The Department of Tourism (DOT) has already placed Davao City in the priority for the Grassroots Entrepreneurship for Eco Tourism (Greet), Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said.

Durano said the details are now being finalized but the plan would come after the three other pilot areas in the region are completed.

The Davao area will have four sites and two of these are in Davao City, Durano said.

Durano explained that under Greet program the focus also will be the participation of the community.

He cited that in Donsol, Sorsogon the community had champion the "Greet" through their whale shark watching. The other areas are in Bohol where the chocolate hills are located and in Siargo in the Caraga Region.

Under the program, they need to level the playing field by giving the community easy access to skills, capital, market opportunities plus value formation.

In Donsol, he said 60 fishing boats were transformed into tourists’ boats that will ferry visitors to the area where they will get first hand look of the whale sharks and the fishermen as "butanting" tour guide.

Right now, he said, the Donsol community are advocating other communities by using tourism to gain livelihood.

"We will not move in the area unless we are done in a community," he said.

Durano was hinting for glamorous camping or 'Glamping' in Mt. Apo. The place is ideal to try out the concept among foreign tourists who would experience culture and nature through camping and yet get high-end reception just like in five-star hotels.

He pictured 'glamping' as one that involves safari-style adventure with champagne, fine dining and rustic luxury of air-conditioned tents, hot water and other amenities.
He said this type of adventure has become popular among wealthy travelers from North America, Europe and Africa where resorts offer king-sized bed with Persian rugs and others. (PNA)

Southern Mindanao bets grab Gawad Ulirang Kabataan
By Grace L. Plata

SOUTHERN Mindanao bets bagged two of the five winning slots in the 4th National Gawad Ulirang Kabataan Search.

The awarding was held Thursday at the Tanghalang Sento K-2 at the Rizal Park (Luneta), Manila.

Benralph Yu, 16, of Davao City National High School, and Kate Marie Benitez, 17, of the Samal National High School won for themselves a trophy and P45,000.

Yu, Benitez, and Sonny Carl Revamonte, 16, of Panabo National High School, were the region's three nominees. Revamonte, as regional nominee, also received a cash incentive worth P5,000.

Dr. Helen Libunao, coordinator for the search, said all three nominees are division presidents of student governments, which was a basis for their selection. Yu, she said, was also elected as National President of Supreme Student Governments in the Philippines.

Department of Education (DepEd) Southern Mindanao Director Susana Estigoy said the victory of Yu and Benitez is a "great inspiration for DepEd."

"Yu and Benitez are the embodiments of the kind of youth we want to nurture and develop in our schools. We are proud of them," Estigoy said.

City Council Education Committee Chair Ma. Belen Acosta also extended her congratulations to the winners.

"The winners deserve the awards and are real role models of today's youth. May their achievements be an inspiration to other young Dabawenyos," Acosta said.

^^ Well, honestly...it's hard to speculate bro kung kelan tlga ang exact month. Only Damosa and Ayala Land which can answer that. I visited Ayala Land's website and it was indicated there that construction should commence before the year would end.

Anyway, about Central Park, I wasnt able to take a peek. Pero nung dumaan ako dun last week (when I was in Davao), on going yung construction.

Wala man na move...in fact, walay exact date. As per news, diba they said na it would be on the third quarter of 2008 or before the year ends. Dili basta basta makaclearing ang Ayala because even if majority of the area is owned by Floreindos (partner ng Ayala sa Davao), there are certain parcels which are owned by other individuals.

Let's not be impatient. A project as big as this cant be built asap and it has to go through certain procedures and processes. Rome was not built in a day.

good morning wadab.

flash report:

nag renovate ang g-mall sa kanilang interior, at last lagyan na nila ng kisame, tapos na sila mag lagay ng mga supports at sa tingin ko parang sosy naman. nice ito pag matapos. the elevators are getting facelifts too.

full blast ang construction ng central park hotel at ng commercial center in front of chimes mall.

balik smooth traffic ang bankerohan area after the re-opening of the bridge.

rumors: according to my friend from calinan, may buzz daw doon na malapit nang i construct ang gaisano at nccc calinan and a stand alone jollibee outlet. maybe atty can confirm/deny the nccc part.

In the future baka magkaroon na ng Gaisano Paquibato at SM Savemore Matina Biao. One of my lucid fantasies :D Calinan is becoming a city within a city.

Correct.

I suspect that the delay is caused by protracted negotiations with owners of the buildings fronting DLPC. I see this as something good because if the negotiations turn out successful, we will be seeing an unobstructed view of the Ayala Center structure from J.P. Laurel Avenue. Kaysa naman yung minamadali tapos may mga naiwang establishments fronting DLPC. Baka magiging ala Royal Mandaya pa yan na may na sandwhich na karenderia sa gitna.

CHILD OF THE SUN: Bankerohan Bridge. By Ting Tiongco
Ting Tiongco/MindaNews

DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/15 June) -- I crossed the new Bankerohan Bridge today. They opened it for traffic just in time for the first day of school this year. And it was a pleasant surprise. I did not expect the Department of Public Works to finish building the bridge that fast. After all, it did take them quite a while to even dismantle the old one that finally gave up its ghost more than a year ago.

The new bridge is wider, smoother and of course a lot cleaner than the old one, with gleaming new lamp posts standing like honor guards on one side with their swords stretched out in salute. I think they carry the new sodium lamps, the kind that are more energy efficient and emit an eerie orange glow that somehow manages to color even the clouds up there in the night sky.

I felt a twinge of pain as we rode through the bridge, zooming along with the other vehicles, intent on getting to the other side. The bridge’s sides were closed, and from the car, one could no longer see the river; and hadn’t I known that I was crossing a bridge, it would have felt like I was driving through just another part of the highway.

Time was when Bankerohan Bridge was the only bridge in Davao City. You might say that the old bridge and I were practically born together. I remember as a baby that often, to help me get over a tantrum, my father would bundle me into a big black 8-cylinder Ford sedan and drive over to the new bridge, for nothing else but to blink at the bright lights from big glass spheres that housed huge incandescent bulbs sitting on the extended arms of ornate lamp posts that stood as sentinels along the sides of the bridge.

There weren’t too many cars at that time, and people actually walked across the bridge, often not just to get to the other side, because there wasn’t really much yet on the south side of the bridge; but for the sheer pleasure of walking across, savoring the lights (there weren’t any neon signs then) and pausing in the middle to gaze down at the dark river current that swirled around the concrete pylons of the bridge.

There is something that stirs romance in a bridge that is built not only for people to get across but for the crossing itself. And Bankerohan Bridge was such a bridge. Then.

As a high school student in Ateneo, I used to stay later than I should have in the Matina campus so I could slowly walk down the bridge on my way home, passing my hand over her concrete balustrades, pausing now and then and gazing at the workmen below in the river water who gathered sand in huge tin basins and dumped them on flat bottomed boats to be collected later by trucks along the banks for eventual use in city constructions.

I envied the little boys who swam along the banks and gazed in awe at the braver and more intrepid ones who climbed on the bridge and jumped with whoops of joy and bravado into the current below.

She wasn’t really a beautiful or extraordinary bridge, our Bankerohan Bridge. She spanned that part of the river between what was the only market in the city and what was then considered the boondocks on the other side. She wasn’t anything grand like the Golden Gate Bridge or romantic like the Pont Neuf or historical like the Ponte Vecchio or popular like the London Bridge. But heck, she was OUR bridge, the only one Davao had, and we were mighty proud of her. She was the bridge of my generation. She was our bridge when war erupted between the fans of Elvis Presley and Pat Boone. Later, she took us to jam sessions in the uppity Matina district when the Twist and the Mash Potatoes replaced the Boogie. She heard the first notes of the Beatles’ ‘I want to hold your hand’ over our car radios. And she was silent witness to our adolescent desires, ambitions and heartaches and also to the frequent hormonal rages of our teens.

But people grow up, and eventually go to Manila to study. And a city gets bigger even if bridges do not. So bridges get left behind and lose their romance, just like Puff the magic dragon, his green scales. Vandals shot away the big glass spheres from the ornate lampposts that were eventually replaced with more utilitarian, if uglier and taller, steel ones. Neon lights and gaudy billboards sprang up like mushrooms overnight in the city and around the bridge. Cars and other vehicles multiplied and people seldom saw the need or had the time to walk leisurely over to the other side. Traffic piled up and soon, the old Bankerohan Bridge (nobody ever called her Generoso Bridge during my time!) was deemed inadequate for the city’s needs. So they built an ugly one beside her, just a shade higher than the old one, as if to show how antiquated and insignificant she had become.

Soon, three more spans were built across the Davao River at more strategic areas and the old Bankerohan Bridge, already suffering from comparison with the new one next to it, lost her previous prominence and became just another convenience. She got lost in the hustle and bustle of a big and strange new city that had no time for genteel late afternoon walks and pensive river gazing. When I got home from my studies in Manila and abroad, she had practically faded out of sight.

Until April 12, 2007 when she finally decided to die.

Nobody would have noticed the old lady go away, if there had not been the attendant inconvenience of added traffic to her demise.

I often braved the inch-by-inch traffic over the other bridge just to pause a bit and gaze wistfully at the bridge of my childhood as people with jack hammers slowly dismantled her, baring her innards, the steel girders and concrete pylons that sank into the water. I felt sad, watching the autopsy of an old and very dear friend.

I silently begged the engineers and the workers to reverently put her back the way she was before all the other bridges were built. I wanted them to restore her to her previous splendor and importance, alone, as the repository of the images of the childhood and adolescence of my generation.

It was a vain wish, of course. Another bridge would span the same area. It would probably still be called the Bankerohan Bridge. It would be a technically bigger and better bridge and would last longer than the old one. It would carry more people and more cars from one end to the other.

But it would not carry the memories of my generation. They are gone with the old bridge. Swept silently away by the swirling river waters.

Somewhere.

City to create office for flooding woes
Sunstar Davao

DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte intends to create a special office that will deal with the flooding problem that has been bugging the city the past weeks.

Duterte said the office will be separated from the City Engineers Office and will be tasked to do palliative measures against flooding in the City.

The mayor said the new office will have about 500 personnel who will clean clogged drainage to minimize heavy flooding, especially in downtown areas.

Duterte said anyone can call up 911 if they saw anybody throwing their garbage into the canals.

He vowed that anyone caught throwing garbage in canals will not be arrested. Rather, the person will just be thrown into the canal along with his garbage.

The mayor said he asked the opinion of several experts as regards to the flooding problem, and he was told that one way to address it is to construct wide canals within the city proper. These canals would cost several billions of pesos, he said.

He also said that there is no stopping in flooding brought about by the climate change.

Duterte said flooding is a reality not just in Davao City but in other areas as well, and even in the most industrialized countries like Hong Kong, US and Germany. (BOT)

Dureza assumes post as press secretary
By Carlo P. Mallo
Sunstar Davao

ON MONDAY Dabawenyo Jesus Dureza will sit for the first time as Press Secretary of the President.

Top of his list is the removal of a "Manila-centric" mode of information dissemination, especially those of information coming out of Malacañang.

As announced last May 18, Dureza will replace former Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye who was appointed to the Monetary Board.

Dureza will be replaced by retired Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Chief of Staff General Hermogenes Esperon as Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process.

"Basically my job is to convey information from the palace to the people," Dureza told reporters last week during a breakfast interview after the Independence Day rites in Davao City.

Dureza said it would be more helpful in the information dissemination drive of the Palace if the various local media would be included.

The new press secretary added that he is in close coordination with both the national and local media all over the country in order to expedite the dissemination of information coming from the President, especially on new policies.

Dureza was editor-in-chief of a local newspaper during the 1970's in Davao City.

For winning gold, John Ray fulfills promise to father
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey
Sunstar Davao

BEFORE he left for Vietnam to compete in the 9th Asean Age-Group Chess Championships, 11-year-old John Ray Batucan of Davao City promised his father he is going to win the gold medal.

Not only did John Ray fulfill his promise, he gave his father Neptali Batucan Jr. with perhaps the greatest Father's Day gift in his life and made the entire country proud with his spectacular win in the boy's 12-under category.

Batucan finished with 7.5 points in the 9-round Swiss System format to bag the gold in the standard chess, half a point up his closest pursuer, then powered the Philippines to the team gold in a scintillating performance that had National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president praising the young boy.

What was so amazing with his accomplishment was that John Ray competed in the Vietnam tournament without his parents on his side.

Neptali Batucan Jr., a taxi driver, was supposed to accompany his son in his first international event, but financial constraints left him stranded in Manila.

John Ray's mother, Marilyn Belleza Batucan, told Sun.Star Davao his husband was asked $400 for hotel accommodations in the trip.

"We don't have that money. Where could we possibly produce that amount in an instant?" said Mrs. Batucan, a school teacher.

Faced with this problem, the Batucans were left in dire straits as none of them could accompany his son in his very first trip outside of the country.

But, there was one thing Mrs. Batucan remembered before John Ray left. His son had promised his father to bring home the gold.

Chess champion draws praises
Sunstar Davao

JOHN Ray Batucan drew praises from sports officials and supporters in Davao City for his conquest in the 9th Asean Age-Group Chess Championships.

"We are proud that a Dabawenyo has made a mark in youth chess. We are also happy that we are able to help him because we believe that he has something to prove not only to himself, to his family but also to his fellow young Dabawenyos," said Christopher "Bong" Go, city sports coordinator.

"We congratulate him for bringing honor to our country and to Davao City," Go added.

Engineer Enrico Vanta of the Chadric Builders Construction and Supply also admired the 11-year-old Batucan for his victory against top-rated opponents.

"This calls for a celebration. He made Davao City proud and we are happy he got the gold," said Vanta, who helped Batucan and another Davao player, Rowelyn Joy Acedo, in the Vietnam campaign.

Batucan won the gold in the boy's 12-under category after scoring 7.5 points in nine rounds. He also powered the country to the team gold with his sterling performance.

Go also thanked National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) president Prospero "Butch" Pichay for his support to the Davao players.

"We are thankful to him (Pichay) for giving our young players the chance to represent our country to the Asean tournament," he said.

City officials and other well meaning private individuals had donated cash to help Batucan, a student of Don Juan dela Cruz Elementary School. (MLSA/CRAM)

US market data collection firm commits to expand operations

DAVAO CITY — US data collection firm Western Wats Center has committed to expand its call center operations in this city, due to start on July 15.

Chief Operating Officer William W. Gaffin made the pledge during his meeting with city council members last week.

The Utah-based company has set up a 500-seat call center at the New City Commercial Corp. (NCCC) shopping mall in Matina district.

It has spent P60 million to P70 million, said Mr. Gaffin, who is also the president of Gaffin Market Research and vice-president of Synovate Research, both based in Chicago, Illinois.

Western Wats provides survey research data collection service. It specializes in quantitative research data collection via live telephone interview, automated telephony and the Web.

Western Wats started operations in 1987 with Utah as its main point. The largest independently owned market research data collection company in the US conducts market research for many prominent businesses worldwide.

The NCCC management has applied for information technology accreditation with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority, which will allow locators like Western Wats Center to avail themselves of the incentives offered by the government.

Mr. Gaffin assured the local government officials the company would look at expanding its operations in the city as soon as the business picks up.

On April 2, the management of the mall signed a deal for the entry of the call center. NCCC President Ivan Spencer A. Lim earlier said the entry of the call center could increase sales.

He also said they might eventually open the mall for 24 hours once call center operations intensify.

Jose Antonio T. San Gabriel, president of the call center, said Western Wats might increase spending since it would be needing more equipment from the US once it starts operations.

Derek Rice, operational director of the call center, earlier said the company might double its work force here as the US presidential elections get under way.

It is during elections, he said, when call centers, including the company’s facility in Cebu, get busy since they are among those getting data for candidates. — CQF

Refurbished DPWH quarters in Davao ready for GMA use
Sunstar Davao
Tuesday, June 17, 2008

DAVAO CITY – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials refuse to call it a “presidential mansion in Mindanao,” referring to it as just plain “living quarters.”

For the first time tomorrow, President Arroyo is reportedly set to use the structure that used to be the living quarters of visiting engineers of the DPWH inside its depot in Barangay Panacan this city.

She is expected to arrive tomorrow to address the Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrat regional convention and join the celebration marking the cityhood of the capital town of Mati in Davao Oriental.

“A picture of the quarters was shown to the President sometime last February when she was here in Davao City, and she liked it, which was why it had to be refurbished, so she could use it,” a source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, told The STAR.

Local officials said the two-story structure could be considered as some sort of a “Malacañang in Mindanao” because its management has already been turned over to the Office of the President, particularly the Presidential Management Staff and the Presidential Security Group.

The nine-room structure, painted white, reportedly directly faces the Davao Gulf and has a clear view of Samal Island, just five minutes away by ferry from mainland Davao City.

“Of the nine rooms, two are what you could say are very presentable and could be used by the President,” a DPWH source said.

Further refurbishing of the building’s fixtures, including landscaping, was reportedly done for the past few weeks, costing the government P7 million, aside from its initial project amount of over P20 million.

The President’s room reportedly has a veranda that overlooks the sea and nearby Samal Island.

The same source said security has been very tight inside the DPWH compound that also houses the agency’s regional depot just beside the headquarters of the Armed Forces Eastern Mindanao Command and the Army’s 10th Infantry Division inside the Philippine Navy’s Camp Panacan.

After Mrs. Arroyo decided to turn the living quarters into some kind of a presidential headquarters in the city, the DPWH building has reportedly been restricted.

Tomorrow night, Mrs. Arroyo will reportedly host a dinner for local officials, also at the DPWH quarters. – Edith Regalado

Natawa ako dun sa news about a body being created to handle the flood problem. (The US has similar problems - rivers rising - must be global warming taking effect worldwide). Un daw mahuhuling nagtatapon ng basura sa kanal, itatapon din sa kanal kasama ang basura nya. LOL

City to expropriate private
lands for drainage program

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte yesterday said the city government is likely to expropriate private properties whose owners refuse to allow the city to buy road-rights-of-way to pave the way for the drainage program.

At the same time, Duterte asked the City Council to go slow on allowing projects in areas that serve as catch basin for water absorption during heavy rains.

Duterte said the expropriation measure is the “final solution” if private landowners continue to deny the city’s offer to buy their property for the interconnection of the drainage program.

He said he is not threatening the private property owners but the city has to find a legal remedy to solve the flooding issue and finish the multi-million peso drainage program.

“I’m telling you, this is not for our generation. We are old already. This is for the next generation, so that they will not suffer the same problem in their time,” Duterte said.

He said when the land is expropriated, the government dictates the price and the private owner will have no choice but to accept it since public welfare is at stake.

Duterte said the City Council must also “use its conventional wisdom” before it approves areas for development.

“We need space for water to be absorbed especially during heavy rainfall,” he said.

Duterte said the recent heavy rains are being caused by global warming. “I am not making an excuse but I’m just saying the reality,” he said. Editha Z. Caduaya

Arroyo to fly to Davao, Surigao to check on infra projects
06/17/2008 | 05:10 AM

MANILA, Philippines - President Arroyo will fly to Mindanao on Wednesday to inspect government infrastructure projects in Davao and Surigao.

A Malacañang statement said Arroyo will also visit the grand opening of what is touted to be the country's most modern public market in Davao Oriental.

On Wednesday, she will pass through the P206-million Governor Generoso I (Bankerohan) Bridge, whose "replacement" construction she had inspected last Feb. 29.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) opened the bridge to traffic last June 10, in time for the opening of classes.

On Thursday, Arroyo will grace the opening of the P126-million New Mati Public Market in Madang village in Mati City, Davao Oriental.

The New Mati Public Market has a total floor area of 5,222 square meters spread over 1.42 hectares.

It has four separate buildings that house 588 stalls, commercial and office spaces, ihaw-ihaw area and a multi-purpose area.

On Thursday, Arroyo will also inspect the Surigao-Davao Coastal Road, one of her SONA (State of the Nation Address) commitments.

She will lead a one-and-a-half hour inaugural drive-through from San Agustin town in Surigao del Sur all the way to Tandag City, which will be celebrating its 48th founding anniversary.

"The completion of this road project would enhance the agricultural development potential and provide safe and efficient transport mobility and accessibility within and outside the region," the Palace said.

It added it will also enhance the economic growth of the Surigao provinces and neighboring regions. - GMANews.TV

Davao kid off to big start in rapid chess
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey

AFTER his gold-medal conquest in standard chess, John Ray Batucan of Davao City opened his campaign in rapid chess Monday on a high note when he won his first three matches in the 9th Asean Age-Group Chess Championships in Vietnam.

The 11-year-old Batucan amassed 3.0 points after three wins in the Boy's 12-under of the rapid chess, only to lose his next match to Vietnam's Lu Chan Hung.

In rapid chess, each player is given 25 minutes to complete the game.

Despite the defeat in the fourth round, Batucan is still in strong contention for the gold. He was scheduled to play Fide Master Vuong Trung Hieu in the fifth round Monday afternoon.

Batucan, a son of a taxi driver from Toril, opened his campaign in rapid chess with a win over Samuel Lieu and Nicholas Chew of Singapore in the first two rounds, respectively.

Batucan is actually gunning for his third gold medal in the tournament after also powering Team Philippines to the team gold in the Boy's 12-under.

Prince Mark Aquino of San Nicolas, Pangasinan and Jan Nigel Galan of Valenzuela City also kept the Philippine flag flying high after winning their first two assignments in the Boys' 14-under.

Loren Brigham Laceste of Sto. Tomas, La Union beat compatriot Narquingden Reyes of Rodriguez, Rizal to score 1.5 points in the Boys' 16 and under.

The entry of tournament top seed GM Le Quang Liem gave superiority of the host country in the Boys'18 and under and he is expected to win the gold medal with perfect 2.0 points thus far.

Standard play gold medallist Richieleu Salcedo of Cagayan de Oro City and Karl Victor Ochoa of Calumpit, Bulacan had 1.0 point each after two rounds.
