Spanish businessmen seek market expansion outside Metro Manila due to ‘strong demand’

OVER 100 SPANISH companies in the Philippines are looking to penetrate markets outside Metro Manila through aggressive business missions in the provinces during the second half of the year, the Spanish Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines said.

The chamber groups 105 Spanish firms involved in the food, healthcare, hotel, insurance, liquor, personal care, property, tobacco, and travel industries.

"We are going to hold some of the biggest Spanish expos during the remainder of the year. It is our commitment to bring Spanish companies and their products into the country while at the same time have local businesses find partners for their products to penetrate the Spanish market," chamber president Jose Luis Romero-Salas said in a statement.

He said these companies want to boost the presence of Spanish products in the country particularly in the cities of Bacolod, Baguio, and Davao as well as other areas in Metro Manila.

The business chamber’s first stop is Baguio City from June 27 to 29 with 16 Spanish wine and food companies and distributors seeking to strengthen their presence in the north.

Mr. Romero-Salas said the chamber is also planning to strengthen its relationship with the influential Baguio Chamber of Commerce whose members have business operations in key cities in northern Philippines.

"There is now a strong market demand for Spanish products in those areas. This new visit is aimed at introducing new products and Spanish companies looking for partners," he said.

Similar expos in Bacolod and Davao cities have also been scheduled during the latter part of the year. These cities have been cited as the most logical destinations of Spanish products and services in the south, Mr. Romero-Salas said.

"They are highly urbanized cities that have experienced high economic growth over the last three years. We will be looking to establish partnerships there between Spanish companies and local business establishments," he said.

The chamber will also be staging the fifth annual Spanish Products and Services Expo in Taguig City.

Over the last three years, Spanish businessmen have conducted roadshows in Boracay, Cebu, Iloilo, Quezon Province, Tuguegarao, and Zamboanga.

Spain is said to be eyeing the Philippines as its next investment destination in Asia, next to China and India, with Spanish companies particularly interested in the energy, telecommunications and tourism sectors.

Spanish exports to the Philippines reached 119 million euros or P7.9 billion, 13.5% higher from 2006, while Philippine exports to Spain amounted to 235 million euros or P15.7 billion, up by 29% from 2006.

Main Spanish exports include plastic raw materials, brandy, wines, veterinary and pharmaceutical products, automobile spare parts and electronic equipment. Philippines exports include cement, electronic and IT products, frozen tuna, coconut oil and garments. — B.S. Sto. Domingo

Tinuy-an’s Release Marks First Philippine Eagle Translocation

By Bob on Jun 25, 2008 in Feature

Davao City – Tinuy-an, a female Philippine Eagle rescued from the forest of Bislig City, Surigao del Sur was released to the forests of Mt. Kitanglad, in Sumilao, Bukidnon, marking the country’s first translocation
of an eagle from one mountain range to another.

During pre-release ceremonies at the foot of Mt Kitanglad on June 20, DENR, local governments of Sumilao and Bislig City, non-government organizations and town residents gathered to celebrate the historic event
of Tinuy-an’s freedom.

To support TInuy-an’s release to Mt Kitanglad, Dr. Antonio Manila, Assistant Director of the DENR’s Protected Areas and Wildlife Bureau, clarified that translocation can help maintain a healthy wild population
of Philippine Eagles.

Manila explained that “two year-old eagles instinctively fly very far away from their parents to find a mate and establish its own territory. This natural behavior helps improve eagle bloodline by allowing mating between
non-relatives.”

Apart from preventing breeding among close relatives, Executive Director Dennis Salvador of the Philippine Eagle Foundation (PEF) sees translocations as important for increasing the survival chances of young
birds.

According to Salvador, the forests of Mindanao are heavily fragmented and isolated which can cause naïve and inexperienced young eagles to starve to death, get shot, captured, or trapped while crossing wide, open areas.

“Translocating young birds to a protected and vacant forest elsewhere avoids the dangers of the eagles meeting people during this vulnerable period of dispersal”, he further explained.

Translocation has helped saved several globally endangered animals and Salvador believes that it can also help save the Philippine Eagles from extinction.

Like a father handing down a jewel, Vice Mayor Conrad Cejoco of Bislig City urged Sumilao residents to take care of Tinuy-an and adopt her as their own. As a ceremonial gesture, Vice Mayor Consolacion Cagadas of
Sumilao town accepted responsibility over Tinuy-an’s. Cejoco and the Bislig City Council gave consent to Tinuy-an’s transfer because they believed that the protected forests of Mt Kitanglad is a safe
alternative than having the young eagle disperse elsewhere.

“Tinuy-an” was rescued by the DENR and the PEF at Burboanan, Bislig City on March 2007 and was rehabilitated and treated at the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City.

Tinuy-an joined male Philippine Eagle “Kagsabua” at the Sumilao release site. Transmitters were attached on both birds and the PEF and DENR personnel will track and monitor them until they become independent of
human care.

“Tinuy-an” is the namesake of a famous waterfall in Bislig City which means “Water Spring”. Jayson Ibanez, Philippine Eagle Foundation.

Davao’s traffic signal program wins US award

Davao City’s traffic signalization program won an award in the 2008 Engineering Excellence Awards in California, USA recently.

Efren Abratique, chief executive officer of the Los Angeles-based Abratique and Associates which installed the program, told the Mirror the Traffic Signalization Project Phase I won a merit award in the competition.

Abratique said the award was presented to him on February 11, 2008 in Sacramento, California in the presence of “many competitors from all over the world.”

He said among the bases of the award is the impact of the project on the economic and social wellbeing of the people, on government support facilities, and on urbanization and world competitiveness.

The yearly award is organized by the Consulting Engineers and Land Surveyors of California (CELSOC).

Abratique told the Mirror that the biggest factors CELSOC cited in giving the award were the data provided by the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and the Traffic Management Center (TMC) which showed a 95 percent reduction in road accidents in intersections where traffic lights had been installed.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte embarked on the traffic signalization program in June 2006 as he forecast the rapid increase in transportation in the city.

“I want traffic moving towards the fast economic movement of the city, save lives, save properties, and above all contribute to the economic movement of our people,” Duterte said at the start of the program.

The traffic signalization program is now about to complete the second phase, which added 15 more intersections over the 29 intersections completed during the first phase.

Abratique said some areas in Phase II are already functional, while some need modifications since the plan was made three years ago.

“It is not a critical modification. We need to fine-tune it to serve the motorists and make it attuned to the future traffic movement of the city. But all the lights have been installed. What is left is the stripping activities which will guide the motorists,” he said.

Meanwhile, Phase III of the program is in its final phase. It will provide a traffic control center where all intersections with traffic lights will be monitored. Editha Z. Caduaya

MORE WATER FOR NORTHERN CITY PARTS OF DAVAO CITY

In its long bid to ease the water woes of Davaoeños staying at the northern parts of Davao City, the Davao City Water District commissioned last June 3, 2008 the recently completed well no. 3 of the Panacan Water Supply System located at Upper Malagamot, Panacan. This is designed to improve water service to the existing 6,500 households in Panacan, Ilang, Tibungco, Bunawan, and Lasang.

DCWD general manager Rodora N. Gamboa said that the integration of Panacan Well no. 3 into the existing water supply system, customers previously enjoying nine to ten hours water service are expected to enjoy 16 to 18 hours of water supply daily, while those enjoying 24-hour water service will experience improved water pressure in their pipelines. “We are also pleased to tell the public that DCWD can now accommodate more than 500 additional new service connections in the Panacan Water System with this new development”, Gamboa added.

The new well cost P11.3 million inclusive of drilling and construction of pump station, installation of pump and motor, and electrical appurtenances. It has a production capacity of 1,200 gallons per minute (gpm).

Panacan Well No 3
DCWD general manager Rodora N. Gamboa (L) and Director Ma. Luisa L. Jacinto (R) turn the main valve to commission or integrate Panacan production well no. 3 into the Panacan Water Supply system.

“Supplying adequate water to the northern areas has been DCWD’s long running challenge due to their far location from the Dumoy water fields and the limitations regarding water quantity and quality”, Gamboa further explained. The water utility had been successful in drilling two wells in Malagamot many years back but had to keep up with the development and influx of residents there. Hence, the drilling of this new well. but Cebu has more industrial water connections.

...because Cebu has no watersheds (or konti na lang)....so they rely on the water distributors. Their deep wells are unreliable.

Editha Z. Caduaya

DCWD needs P300M to cut systems loss by 50%
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Davao

AT LEAST P300 million is needed to reduce water systems loss in Davao City, the general manager of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) said.

"Our systems loss is pegged at about 30.68 percent every year and about P300 million is the needed investment to reduce it by one half," Rodora Gamboa, DCWD general manager, said in Tuesday's edition of the Business Forum at the Medispa at SM Davao.

Gamboa said one of the DCWD's projects is to reduce systems loss through replacement of old pipes in selected areas in the city.

"Causes of systems loss are not only because of leaks in pipes, but also in illegal connections," she said.

She added that DCWD could not come up with a sewerage system because it entails high cost of investments.

"We cannot come up with a sewerage system not only because it entails high cost of investments, but also the willingness of consumers to have it is very low," Gamboa said.

In Singapore, Gamboa noted that the average water systems loss is only placed at five percent "because leak-proof and lasting pipes are used in their water systems."

"Since the willingness of consumers of having a sewerage system is very low, we conduct advocacies and education for them to realize its importance," Gamboa concluded.

Davao emerges as among best sites for BPO, ICT business
Sunstar Davao

DAVAO City has been named recently as one of the world's best investment sites for business process outsourcing (BPO) industry and global offshore ICT hubs, according to a recently released study conducted by the EU-based XMG Global ICT Research and Advisory Service.

The other "emerging off-shoring cities" cited in the global study together with Davao in the southern Philippines, include Casablanca in Morocco, Montevideo in Uruguay, and Jakarta in Indonesia.

XMG-Global public affairs officer Pierre Boudreau said foreign researchers and BPO executives who took part in the worldwide study are "very bullish about Davao City."

This is due to the area's much larger population of untapped English-speaking students and graduates compared to Cebu in the central Philippines and the country's capital city of Manila where competition for qualified staff among BPO companies are fierce and the number of call centers and ICTs are nearing "saturation point."

"We're impressed by the huge untapped manpower base in Davao. This will be very attractive to many BPO companies in US and Europe planning to locate and expand their operations here," Boudreau said.

This was confirmed by Teolulo Pasawa, head of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac) -- a special unit of Davao Region's Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) -- that helps new BPO investors set up their new call centers and other ICT businesses in the city.

"There are many schools, colleges, universities and training centers in Davao today producing thousands of qualified graduates for the BPO industry," Pasawa said.

The XMG-Global ICT study show that the city of Davao alone with these various educational institutions and training centers, is producing every year a much higher number of IT and BPO qualified graduates than the cities of Subic, Clark and Baguio in central and northern Luzon.

Davao has 689 percent more graduates than Subic, 278 percent more than Clark, and 40 percent more than Baguio.

"This has not even taken into account the manpower pool at the nearby provinces, towns and small cities like Tagum, Panabo, Digos, Bansalan, Mati, Compostela, etc, which are also producing thousands of qualified graduates yearly," Boudreau said.

The worldwide study highlighted the population of Davao City (1.4 million) as "considerably higher than other Tier-2 offshoring cities globally."

In the Philippines, Davao City's population is 71 percent bigger than Cebu City, 499 percent larger than Olongapo City in Subic, 333 percent higher than Angeles City in Clark, and 340 percent bigger than Baguio City.

Davao City's estimated workforce, according to the study, is twice that of Cebu, nine times bigger than Subic, seven times bigger than Clark, and six times bigger than Baguio.

Modern telecom facilities, transportation networks, and public transport systems are already in place in Davao, according to Boudreau, "but there's still a lot of room to further improve and modernize these facilities and services."

To attract more BPO and ICT locators to Davao, XMG Researcher Camille Lumbang urged both the government and private sector "to act together with plans and programs to boost the overall image of Davao" as a top investment site for ICT and BPO businesses.

Foreign BPO executives are amazed that while Davao is now identified with three other global cities as best sites for BPO and ICT investments, "this fact alone has not sank in yet as local officials still could hardly believe it," said Lumbang.

High hopes for Valle in Qatar 9-Ball event
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan
Sunstar Davao

DAVAO City's Gandy Valle left for the Qatar 9-Ball on Wednesday in high spirits after his gigantic win against current World number 1 Dennis Orcollo of Surigao in the finals of the First Senate President Manny Villar-Sun.Star Superbalita 9-Ball Challenge in Cebu City over the weekend.

Valle, a 1998 Bangkok Asian Games gold medalist, racked up a come-from-behind 11-5 win against Orcollo in the championship to pocket the P400,000 purse in the eighth edition of the Superbalita challenge also sponsored by Senate President Manny Villar.

"I'm very happy because I won in a major tournament. I feel confident and proud to have beaten him (Orcollo) again, even more so that he's number 1 now. The victory is sweeter because it was a championship. It was our sixth meeting and I'm still ahead, 4-2, in our personal record," beamed Valle, a father of two kids, during a phone interview with Sun.Star Davao Wednesday.

The Davao player, who is the secretary-general of the Billiards Managers and Players of the Philippines (BMPAP), also triumphed over Orcollo in the semifinals of the Manny Pacquiao Cup, National Open and in the Asian 9-Ball Tour elimination in their past encounters.

Davao water district mulls surface water development
By Prix Banzon

Davao City (25 June) -- The Davao City Water District (DCWD) that projected to incur P314 million yearly cost of electricity for extraction of groundwater sources five years from now placed the proposed Tamugan Surface Water Development (TSWD) as their priority project.

DCWD general manager Rhodora N. Gamboa at the Davao Business Forum at the MediSpa of SM City Davao on Tuesday said with the TSWD they would be able to save on power cost by not extracting from groundwater sources.

The TSWD intake is favorable to a gravity fall of water at sufficient pressure thus reducing the amount of electricity needed for its operation, she said.

Gamboa said the project cost is at P1.3 billion although she said they are open for options on where to source funding through loan (foreign or local), built and operation or transfer or the work done by phases.

She said they are done with the pre-feasibility study and they need still to come up with detailed feasibility study by 2008 that would cost them some P9 million.

The Tamugan project she said is expected to produce daily 200,000 cubic meters that will benefit an additional 30,000 households from 25 barangays.

With their existing consumers now numbering more than 750,000, the impact of the project will be improved service through increased pressure and availability of water.

Gamboa meanwhile said that with the Hedcor's Hydropower Plant at Tamugan threatening the city's limited water supply, she said the power project would necessitate higher operational costs for DCWD which will ultimately result to higher water rates.

She said they are seriously pursuing the TSWD project saying that as early as May 1997, a water permit was already issued by National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to DCWD to use water from Tamugan River with the diversion point at Upper Baguio, Baguio District. The water district already has been conducting community development activities in the area in preparation for the TSWD.

On the possibility for DCWD and HEDCOR to co-exist in the same project site, Gamboa said they can however, Hedcor has put their power plant above the infiltration gallery instead of their original plant.

However she said that Hedcor is amenable to the proposal because their power production would be lower and the setup that Hedcor will adopt will dry up vital portions of the rivers that will lead to both immediate and long-term adverse effects of the TSWD project.

Gamboa said they had submitted their position paper opposing Hedcor' Hydroelectric Power Plant at Tamugan to Councilor Pilar P. Braga, chairperson, Committee on Energy, Transportation and Communication and Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III, chairperson, Committee on Environment.

No water rate increase, says DCWD

No water rate increase in Davao City despite other water districts in the country to implement their corresponding increases by July, 2008.

Engr. Rhodora N. Gamboa, general manager of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) said the "no water rate increase" will go on for two to three years saying that water districts with foreign loans, need to find other sources in order to meet foreign currency adjustments like the case when the peso appreciates.

Gamboa said the DCWD does not have any foreign loan that is why they are spared of any adjustment in foreign currency.

In Davao City she said the DCWD derives more than 99 percent of its water from groundwater sources to provide potable water to over 156,000 homes and businesses all over the city.

She said a total of 212,000 cubic meters are being extracted daily. In 2007 groundwater extracted reached 78 million cubic meters and increasing annually by 5.06 percent over the past two decades.

By 2012 she said they expect total extractions to reach over 115 million cubic meters or 314,000 cubic meters daily. Also, large industrial users and private well owners have been withdrawing from groundwater sources for their own use, she said.

But Gamboa said that sound water management plan is necessary requisite to ensuring adequacy and good quality water.

Citing the Master Plan Study on Water Resources Management in the Republic of the Philippines conducted by Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. and Nippon Jogesuido Sekkei Co., Ltd.

Davao City is one of the nine water-critical urbanized areas in the Philippines where water is consumed intensively and needs short-term and long-term plans to cope with the anticipated water deficit.

She said the National Water Resources Board confirmed that underground water supply in many densely populated areas in the country particularly in Metro Manila and Cebu which is already on a critical level due to unabated extraction of groundwater that could lead to ground subsidence.

The same thing she said could happen to Davao City if no drastic measures are undertaken.

Meanwhile Gamboa said they are into advocacy in protecting the watershed of which they started a forum initially among four schools in Davao City.

She said the event is part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR) by informing the public of protecting the environment and how climate change has been affecting us.

The drying up of rivers, flooding and denuded forests are contributory to climate change and the public must know its effects and help protect the environment, she added. (PIA) [top]

Citihardware to open banch near Davao airport
Mindanao Daily Mirror
June 25, 2008

The homegrown Citi-hardware will soon open a branch near the Davao International Airport (DIA) as it celebrates its 10th anniversary this year.

At a press conference yesterday, Citihardware operations manager Dan Espinosa said the newest Davao City branch will add to the growing number of branches all over the country, which currently stands at 22.

Espinosa, however, would not say when the newest branch, the third in Davao City, will open. The two other branches are in Bajada and in Matina.

Other branches set to be open this year are in Lucena City, Kalibo in Aklan, and in Roxas City.

The first Citihardware was built in Bajada, Davao City in 1988. It was envisioned by Decoarts Marketing as a chain of modern hardware and home improvement stores.

In the succeeding years, Citihardware put up branches all over the country: General Santos City, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Bacolod, Dumaguete, Mandaue, Iloilo, Pardo, Bohol, Zamboanga, Tacloban, Butuan, Cotabato, Ozamiz, Valencia, Tagum, Batangas, Ormoc, Lipa, and Kalibo.

Espinosa said the company will also put up a branch in Metro Manila, although management does not have a time frame for it.

“We want to protect the south because this is where we are the strongest. Mas kabisado namin ang probinsiya,” he said.

Bajada store manager Oliver Equiza, for his part, said Citihardware believes in giving great value for their money. Every item is priced reasonably and warranties are given for all products.

An almost unheard-of perk for customers is Citihardware’s “hassle-free return” policy in which customers can return defective products for a refund or an exchange with no questions asked.

Equiza said customers can even return excess materials they were not able to use in their projects.

Landowners to receive P24M
pay for hydro plant dev’t

Aboitiz Power subsidiary Hedcor Tamugan, Inc. (HTI) signed a contract with 39 Barangay Suawan and Salaysay landowners last June 9 for the lease of 14 hectares of land that will be used during the construction of the company’s 7-megawatt Suawan hydropower plant in Davao.

The residents, who signed their contracts with Hedcor President Rene Ronquillo, will receive more than P24 million from their land rental agreement with the company.

“We are fortunate that our district is one of the beneficiaries of Hedcor. The construction and road developments both in Salaysay and Suawan will be a very big help to the community,” said Barangay Salaysay Chief Paul Barrete, who was present during the contract signing as witness together with Suawan Barangay Captain Teodora Amoy and Hedcor Vice President for Mindanao Operations Gregorio Jabonillo.

The Suawan plant is a component of HTI’s 34.5-megawatt Tamugan Hydro-power Project (THP). The THP is a greenfield energy project that involves the construction of two other run-of-river generating facilities - the 20-megawatt Tamugan Plant and the 7.5-megawatt Panigan Plant all in the Calinan, Baguio, and Marilog Districts.

These three plants will generate 235 million kilowatt-hours of clean energy annually starting August 2010 to help meet the increasing energy demands of Davao City.

HTI is a wholly owned subsidiary of Aboitiz Power Corporation (PSE: AP), the publicly listed holding company of all Aboitiz assets in the power generation and distribution industries.

Operations are now in full swing at Cebu Pacific’s Davao hub. The airline’s newest hub, the third after Manila and Cebu, will service four domestic and two international destinations, including direct flights to Hong Kong and Singapore. Bangkok and Macau are also accessible through connecting flights via Cebu.

“We are making Davao our third hub in order to make the city and the rest of Mindanao more accessible for tourism and trade,” said Candice Iyog, CEB vice president for marketing and product. “We understand the need to offer a more convenient and affordable service out of Davao and hope that the public will take advantage of these new services.” CEB is the only airline flying both Davao-Iloilo and Davao-Hong Kong routes, and it is the only Filipino carrier offering the Davao-Singapore service.

“This is a significant milestone because it opens up more of our islands to more travelers,” said Under Secretary Eduardo Jarque from the Department of Tourism. “This is also a good indicator that our tourism industry is healthy and doing well.”

The illustration is just a projection of how the Davao skyline would look like from that angle once the proposed and confirmed condotel project of Filinvest shall have been finished. A Davao forumer based in Manila got the confirmation from the project head for Mindanao that Filinvest will develop in that area a two-tower condotel with twenty storeys each. Incidentally, this project is located just across the construction site of Ayala Center Davao.

On the second picture:

The tall building on the upper left is still under construction. Again, it is just a projection of the skyline after the completion of the project. The building is that of Central Park Hotel standing at twelve storeys high.

The tallest existing building in Davao is the Marco Polo Hotel at eighteen storeys high.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO
The University of Mindanao Main Campus is located at the heart of Davao City. Formerly the Japanese School site, Atty. Guillermo Torres saw the property’s potential as the ideal site for the Mindanao Colleges despite the devastated and idle appearance left by the American bombings in 1944. He determinedly acquired the lot for the noble cause of education for all – the poor and the rich alike – that they may have a better future. Construction of the first one-story building at Bolton, the nucleus of many other constructions that soon followed, started as soon as the property was awarded. All classes from the previously occupied Club Royale were transferred to the Bolton campus in the school year 1947-48. With the expanding population of the school, there was a need to have more space. The Japanese Embassy grounds in front of the Mindanao Colleges eventually became the property of MC in 1964. After several years of hard work and dedication, a permanent and ideal home for Torres’ dream was realized.

At present, the UM Main Campus occupies two adjacent lots namely the Administrative Building and Research Tower Area and the Embassy Area. The Administration Building and Research Tower Area consists of the 4-storey Social Science Building, the 4-storey Technology Building and 7-storey Research Tower Building. The Embassy Area, which took its name from the previous occupancy, is composed of the Gymnasium, College of Accountancy and the College of Criminology Buildings. The Colleges of Business Administration, Law and Graduate Programs are also housed in this campus.

Along with the aim of giving the best leadership education for the students, providing adequate spaces conducive to an educational environment for the students further strengthens this. From a 4-room educational institution, a big university was established. The University of Mindanao, yesterday’s vision is now a realization.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO
G.E.T. 1(GUILLERMO E. TORRES BUILDING 1)
A plan to expand and create a bigger and more conducive place for learning was envisioned by Atty. Guillermo E. Torres. The site for the new campus was bought in 1981 and plans for developing the place campus into a sprawling center for learning took place. In 1983, the College of Engineering and Architecture transferred to the Matina Campus.

Completed in the year 1996 is the GET 1 building of the UM Matina Campus. The GET 1 building, named in honor of Atty. Guillermo E. Torres, follows the concept of formal balance and symmetry. The protractor-shaped building deviates from the usual square building – relevantly symbolizing a common measuring instrument of the colleges housed namely: the College of Engineering and the College of Architecture. This was designed by Arch’t. Digna Claudio of Manila.

GET 1 was inaugurated during the 50th Founding Anniversary of the University. Its columns with distinctly designed capitals – originally colored gold – represent the “golden” celebration. Exposing the columns essentially exhibits the strength, capability and potential of the university which had been ambiguously hidden for several years. Tropical design was also considered as a major factor in the design. Comfort and efficiency were introduced through natural lighting and ventilation. The interior landscaping in the atrium provides a scenic view from the classrooms and enhances a healthy environment.

THE UNIVERSITY OF MINDANAO
GUILLERMO E. TORRES BUILDING 2
( College of Arts and Science Building)
Completed in the summer of 2003, the GET 2 building was all set for use in the school year 2003-2004 to house the College of Nursing and College of Arts and Sciences. Each college has been equipped with their respective modern laboratories for the students’ simulated practice exercises. The University Auditorium and Conference Room is also located in this building.

The building was designed by the university’s very own Arch’t. Iluminado Quinto, Jr., Arch’t. Manuel De Luna and Arch’t. Jaime Gonzaga. Replicated from GET1 is the exposure of the columns as to express “strength is being exposed”. Aside from this, unity and harmony with GET 1 is intended to be achieved. The two large blocks at the façade serves as contrast to the grid of intersecting exposed columns and beams, further accentuated by the difference of colors.

On the plan, GET 2 building’s main entrance has been located at the left of the center of the building. This particular decision was made because of two basic reasons. The first one is related with the visual identity and distinction between GET 1 and GET 2. GET 1 is symmetrical (formal balance) while GET 2 is asymmetrical. The second reason is rather functional. Immediately to the left of the lobby is the auditorium. The direct connectedness between these two major areas offers great advantage on way finding for guests whose prime destination is the auditorium. Through this, the rest of the building which is mostly classrooms would be left undisturbed. The south-western wing of the building is a double loaded corridor, initially designed to accommodate the laboratory and library facilities.

ang ganda naman ng Nursing Fundamental rooms ng UM, parang isang primary hospital talaga!

UM bolton is very memorable to me, diyan ako nakapasa ng Board exam!

and the UM in matina is really huge, not just the building but also the lawn infront of the building...may mga theatres pala diyan, could be a good venue for plays and broadways and even small conventions.

i hope UM will open more courses soon, more on medical sciences (doctor of medicine, dentistry, Pharmacy...etc)...

hi @netaholic i think they just recently revived the Davao -Manado flight ..welcome!

Indonesia’s Wings Air studying revival of Davao-Manado flights

DAVAO CITY — Indonesia’s Wings Air has started servicing the Davao City-Manado, Indonesia route in preparation for a regular flight schedule in the coming months.

Daniel J. Jacob, company district manager for Manado and East Indo-nesia, said the initial flight, which landed at the Davao International Airport yesterday, was chartered after a tour agency, which has offices here and in Manado, asked the company to service the route.

"We would like to see the market," said Mr. Jacob, adding that he is optimistic that the route will be sustained with the increase in economic partnership between the two areas. The company, a subsidiary of Lion Air, is using a jet-propelled 54-seater plane that flies the route at a much slower two hours, compared with about an hour by previous airlines Bouraq and Merpati, which suspended services due to low-passenger traffic.

Mr. Jacob said the company may use a bigger plane when traffic intensifies. Indonesian Consul-General Lalu Malik Partawana, who was among those who persuaded the airline to service the route, said this was the result of the visit of a group of Indonesian traders and government officials to Davao City and General Santos.

In that visit, some of the traders said they were planning to partner with Mindanao-based businessmen on agriculture, trade and tourism.

"I hope that with this flight, this will boost tourism and trade between Mindanao and Indonesia, particularly Manado," Mr. Partawana told BusinessWorld, adding that he is "quite sure that cooperation will take place in the near future.

The new route will also serve as a jump-off point to either Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia, or Bali, a major international tourism destination. "Now, travelers from Davao will be able to see our tourist spots," said Mr. Partawana.

Mary Ann M. Montemayor, chairperson of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area Tourism Council, welcomed the new air service, saying this will boost the tourism sector of the sub-region.

"I hope that with this route being served, more people will get interested in visiting both areas," she said, pointing out that this will complement the plan of the tourism sector to sell the destinations within the sub-region as one.

Early this year, Merpati Airlines tried to revive the route, but eventually suspended its flights because of low traffic. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

hi @netaholic i think they just recently revived the Davao -Manado flight ..welcome!

thanks for the post dinabaw.

this route has come and gone for the past...12-13 yrs??, previously there were bouraq, merpati, sriwijaya, and now wings air. i wonder why only indonesian carriers interested to this route? why not a single philipine carrier instead? low passenger traffic?

so why the traffic is low? probably because the tourism objects between these two cities are not heavily promoted. it is very hard to find any information about Davao in Manado.

maybe our local governments were able to promote our cities vice versa, but were not able to creat enthusiasm to travel between our cities vice versa in regards to business and tourism.

i guess not for 12 years maybe 3 years sriwijaya was the last one to fold.the one reason for low ridership is both cities have similar products. as far as i know Eaga is now identfying products that could be benefitial for both cities. If only a Davao-Manado-Bali could be made i'm sure Philippine carriers are willing to provide that route , it's a long hour ride from Manila-Jakarta-Bali :)

just read a blind item(sunstar davao) i dont know if okay to post it here. wanna ask you if it smells like related to the one above. its going to be june 30?...

"By the way, watch for a big development on June 30. I got it from an unimpeachable source that some rich families with Chinese ancestry will have to leave their homes. Which mean they will be evicted from where they stay. Since I do not have the documents with me to verify the veracity of this rumor I will just leave the matter that way -- rumor. Maybe some enterprising journalists can follow this up."

thanks for the post dinabaw.

this route has come and gone for the past...12-13 yrs??, previously there were bouraq, merpati, sriwijaya, and now wings air. i wonder why only indonesian carriers interested to this route? why not a single philipine carrier instead? low passenger traffic?

so why the traffic is low? probably because the tourism objects between these two cities are not heavily promoted. it is very hard to find any information about Davao in Manado.
anybody correct me, air philippines served the manila-davao-manado before. sort of trial/experiment route thet lasted for a couple of months.

its a puzzle why they keep on reviving the route if they were not getting the load. it made me think there are passengers and cargo. its probably, profitability were affected by the amount of load to the size of aircraft they were deploying, ect?

I went to Davao in 1997 back when I was in my high school years. We had a study tour to DCHS, Brokenshire HS, Univ of Southern Phil. Thru the pictures I found here there are so many development and changes in 10 years time including the new international airport. I remember the biggest mall I visited was Victoria Plaza. We travelled by Bouraq's HS-8 turboprop airplane from Manado... I wonder if the Davao - Manado route still exist.
allow me paul i will tryhaha. seriously, from what i had learned, there were projects and i would say, big ticket infrastrure projects of davao integrated development program on its planning stage before asian economic meltdown. these included, sta ana pier into marina complex, davao coastal road and reclamation from main city all the way to toril district in the south. proposed entertainment park and convention facilities on reclamed land up for selling to instors. and the shelved now revived samal davao bridge and light rail projects. there were other private sectors investments too industrial parks, shelved high rises. like hospital, condominiums, Pbillion ekran berhad casino hotel etc. anybody can add and correct me please

No Davao mall project plan
from Robinson’s, says exec
BY JUDY QUIROS

Robinson’s Land Corporation (RLC) has not yet proposed the development of a mall project in Davao City, the chief of the Davao City and Investment Promotions Center (DCIPC) said yesterday.

Roberto Teo made the statement when asked to comment on speculations that RLC has already identified an area that will be developed into a mall in Davao City.

Teo told the Mirror that a one-hectare property owned by RLC in Lanang near the Davao City Water District (DCWD) is currently being developed not into a mall but into a supermarket with an investment capital of over P300 million.

He said DCIPC approved the project last month and construction of the project is ongoing.

The proposed supermarket and a call center project at Doña Luisa Building along Jacinto Street fronting Central Bank are the two projects with a total investment value of about P400 million which DCIPC has approved for tax incentives privilege this year, Teo said.

He said DCIPC is currently working on the approval of certain investment tax incentive applications. and here's the scoop! He declined to divulge the names of the applicants/business firms pending approval of their applications.

DCIPC is targeting to approve P1 billion worth of investment tax incentive applications this year, Teo said.

2 students top national search
Mindanao Daily Mirror
June 26, 2008

Two students from DepEd Region 11 were chosen winners from among 31 high school nominees from public and private schools all over the country in the Fourth Pambansang Gawad sa Ulirang Kabataan by the Department of Education–Special Events Unit at the DepEd Sentro K3 Exhibit Area, Luneta Park in Manila.

Benralph Yu of Davao City National High School, Division of Davao City and Kate Marie Benitez of Samal National High School, Division of Samal City brought honors and pride to DepEd 11 for capturing two slots out of five at stake for this year’s search and faired the record of the National Capital Region (NCR) for producing the same number of winners.

Yu is the former president of the National Federation of Student Government Officers of the Philippines and was also recently accorded with Vice President Noli de Castro Exemplary Leadership Award for Mindanao.

DepEd 11 Regional Director Susana Teresa B. Estigoy expressed her congratulatory message to the two exemplary students and challenged others to emulate the achievements of the two awardees.

The other students who completed the magic five include Paul Julian Hao of Chiang Kai Shek College, Manila, National Capital Region (NCR), Stephen Panol of Fort Bonifacio High School, Makati City, National Capital Region (NCR), and Jamil Repors of Kidapawan National High School, Kidapawan City, Region 12.

The awardees are all achievers, leaders and active community workers and all graduated with top honors in their secondary schools last school year.

DepEd Assistant Secretary Jonathan Malaya said the Pambansang Gawad recognizes the achievements and contributions of the nation’s outstanding students in their school and community.

“Our young people are looking for role models and these Gawad awardees are here for all the Filipino youth to emulate,” Malaya added.

The Pambansang Gawad coincides with the observance of the 110th year of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence.

For more information, contact the Department of Education-11, F. Torres Street, Davao City, Tel no. (082) 227-9342 . DepEd 11/PIA 11

Benralph Yu was in MagTV na, Sadya Ta! show on ABS CBN (June 15 production) and listening to his views on things, I could say that he is way beyond his years. ...very intelligent and gifted with gab.

Fabriga, Banayag top SKC awardees

SOUTHEAST Asian (SEA) Games diving gold medalist and first-time Olympian Rexel Ryan Fabriga and SEA Games athletics bronze medalist Jho-an Banayag will be awarded the highest honors during 14th So Kim Cheng Sports Foundation Awards Night on July 22 at the Grand Regal Hotel.

Davao City Councilor and Davao City Sports Council, Inc. president Peter Laviña told Sun.Star Davao on Wednesday that Fabriga and Banayag will be the recipients of the Athlete of the Year for male and female categories.

"There were three nominees for the athlete of the year award. One for the female category and two for the male. I'm informed by our secretary Belen Taala that the top honorees will be Fabriga and Banayag," Laviña said.

Both athletes gave honor to the country by pocketing medals in the 24th SEA Games held in Thailand last year.

Another diving gold medalist, Sheila Mae Perez, is no longer eligible for the award having been elevated to the Hall of Fame couple of years ago. (MLSA)

Himig holds concert

THE internationally renowned Davao’s Himig Singers will be holding a Thanksgiving Concert on Saturday 7 p.m. at the Emma Noreen Hall of Brokenshire Hospital, Madapo hills, Davao City.
The Davao-based community choir is competing in the 5th World Choir Games this coming July in Graz, Austria.
The proceeds of the concert will help defray the costs of travel of the group.
The group had won several International Choral competitions including the recently concluded 1st Asian Choir Games in Jakarta, Indonesia in November 2007, placing the Philippines and Davao City in particular in the Map of the World in terms of Choral music.
“The Himig Singers’ harvest of success, however, was not reaped without prodigious moral and financial support from the government and the private sector. The group is asking once again for your support,” a statement send to Times via friendster.com said.
If you feel the need to provide more support to the group in cash or in any kind, you may contact the following persons:
Arnold 0920 962 9118 / 0922 848 9998
Milan 0920 515 1595 / 0922 881 4343
For more information, you may visit their website at http://www.himigsingers.org.
The group was formed in 1988 by Rey Alan Lacuin.
In 2000, Himig won the the top prize in the National Music Competitions for Young Artists (NAMCYA), one of the most prestigious musical competition in the Philippines. The group won again in 1993.
In 1995, the Himig Singers became a Foundation. The group set out on its first International Concert Tour.
Two years later, the group participated in international competitions in Europe, winning top prizes in Spain, Austria and Italy.
From 1999 to 2001, the Himig Singers toured the U.S. & Canada extensively, singing for Filipino expats as well as North American audiences.
The group was given the prestigious Award of the Audience at Vivace 2004 International Choral Festival in Veszprém, Hungary.
From 2004 to 2006, the group went on an extended Canadian cities tour, performing in Toronto, Missisauga, Scarborough, Windsor, Hamilton, Ottawa & Montreal.
Last year, the group was proclaimed as Asian Champion in the Mixed Vocal Ensemble Category during the 1st Asian Choir Games, Jakarta, Indonesia.

The Himig Singers have recorded 6 CDs since 1997. Four were produced with the support of Ernie Ortonio and Polyfusion Recording Studio (Davao). These CDs were all recorded in Davao City, Philippines.

The first CD, self-titled The Himig Singers (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/himigcd.htm), was recorded over a period of 2 years from 1997 to 1999.

Mga Awiting Pilipino (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/awitingcd.htm), Paskong Pasko (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/paskocd.htm) and Faith & Inspiration (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/faithcd.htm) were all put together in just 3 months in 2000, a lot of work, really, for amateur singers.

Our latest 2 CDs, however, have both been recorded on tour, here in Canada. Church Arise! (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/churcharise.htm), composed of gospel tracks, was recorded in late winter of 2005. Our latest, Christmas With The Himig Singers (http://www.himigsingers.org/htm/christmascd.htm), was recorded last August in our home church, Safe Haven Worship Centre.

TransCo starts Davao Control Center next month
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (28 June) -- The Davao Area Control Center built in the District 5 Southeastern Mindanao Area office at Tugbok district, Davao City will start operation next month.

This is TransCo's strategy of providing efficient service to the public by finding means in order to fully restore power in at least an hour.

"Before, we totally rely on the Mindanao Regional Control Center which is located in Iligan City. This is the reason that restoration period would take as long as 6 to 8 hours," said TransCo's Maximo Adiong who briefed the Davao media yesterday on the latest Davao Area Control Center.

The facility could provide real-time monitoring, status of field devices, full graphics functionality, supervisory control of field devices, data calculations, data archiving, and user access control.

The General Santos Control Center will also start operation on July while Cagayan de Oro and Zamboanga will be commissioned on December.

Adiong announced that with the latest control center now localized, TransCo could easily detect possible disruptions or power problems. The public can also be immediately informed with the reasons of power interruptions as information would need not come from the Mindanao Regional Control Center.

The 5th District of TransCo Mindanao Operations and Maintenance has a total substation capacity of 450 MVA from four substations in Davao, Matanao, Tindalo, Maco and two switching stations of Bunawan and Pintatagan.

It has a total of 3,114 structures of 69 kV transmission lines covering a span of 351.95 circuit kilometers and 1,248 structures of 138 kV transmission lines covering a span of 559.48 circuit kilometers.

It serves Davao Light and Power Co., Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative, Inc., Davao del Norte Electric Cooperative, Davao Oriental Electric Cooperative, Holcim Philippines, and APEX Mining Co. (PIA) [top

Metro Pacific takes minority stake in Davao Doctors Hospital
Philippine Star
Philippine Star - Saturday, June 28

DAVAO CITY - Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), the local flagship of Hong Kong conglomerate First Pacific Co. Ltd., has taken a minority stake in Davao Doctors Hospital after it acquired 34 percent of the issued share capital of the hospital for P498 million.

In a statement, the hospital's officers and administrators said they welcome the entry of MPIC into the board and management of DDH starting the first week of July.

The DDH officers said the entry of MPIC would bring managerial expertise that would make DDH and its subsidiaries more competitive in a rapidly changing business climate.

Established in 1966, DDH is a major private hospital in this part of the country. It has been noted for leading the medical industry in Mindanao with its modern equipment and facilities.

DDH boasts of being a leading medical center patronized even by those from Indonesia and Malaysia, aside by those coming from different parts of Mindanao.

With the entry of MPIC, DDH likewise expects its subsidiary, Davao Doctors Colleges, to also enhance its academic standing among schools and colleges in the South. The college has more than 4,000 students taking up various courses, including nursing, medical technology, physical therapy, general education, among others.

Aside from DDH, MPIC also earlier acquired shares in the Makati Medical Center.

MPIC is poised to start a network of medical facilities and hospitals in the country with its initial investments in the two hospitals.

MPIC's other investment in Mindanao is a real estate project also in Davao City by its property unit Landco. - Edith R. Regalado/Philstar

Ram's Diner opens in Ma-a
Sunstar Davao

SHOWING just how robust the local economy of Davao is, Ram's Diner has opened another restaurant in the southern area of the city last Sunday.

In an interview with Sun.Star Davao, Ruby May Magtoto, the owner of Ram's Diner together with her husband Ram, said that although she is exasperated with the preparations that accompany with the opening of a restaurant, she still feels excited that they are opening another branch.

Ram's, which originally sold "lechon manok," or roasted chicken, started in 1996. "The restaurants were started in 1998," Mrs. Magtoto said.

Apart from the opening of the new Ram's Diner restaurant at DBP Village along Ma-a Road, the Magtoto couple also embarked on a new business, an apartelle.

Dubbed as Enrico's Apartelle, it occupies the 2nd and 3rd floors of the three-storey building, which houses the new outlet of Ram's Diner.

"There are ten rooms on the second and third floors, while there are three doors for the two story apartelles," Mrs. Magtoto added.

Asked why she and her husband decided to venture into the hotel business, Magtoto simply said it was something new to them and that they wanted to give it a shot. (CPM)

Congrats to this new endeavor.... Good luck sa Business>>>>>>>:banana::banana:

From Dumoy to the world
By Carlos Isagani Zarate
Inquirer News Service

THE DUMOY fresh water is probably one of the best in the world. Ask any Davaoeño and he will proudly attest to this without any hint of exaggeration. Dumoy, a suburban community situated along the southern coastal area of Davao City's Talomo District, is sitting on an aquifer whose source of water is traced to the bosom of Mt. Apo, the country's highest peak.

Experts say that through the process of natural filtration, millions of gallons of rainwater collected in the aquifer have been filtered "crystal clean" beneath the earth's surface by molten rocks and other elements spewed by volcanic eruptions in the past.

"That's the reason why the water in Dumoy tastes pure, fresh and good. It has no foul-smell; its quality is one of the best in the world," said Dominador Lopez Jr., an executive of the Davao City Water District (DCWD).

^^ salamat naman at hindi mall ang 18,000 sqm na robinsons sa bajada diba. mas sosy naman ang cybergate na 18k sqm kaysa 18k na mall. so, robinson's cybergate davao is very OK. nice move nga ng RLC to put one in gensan kasi talagang maghahari sila doon without much competition. the hi-rise division of RLC ang dapat nilang itodo dito. :)

Fun and faith guide Philippine diver

By MANNY MOGATO

Reuters

LOS BAÑOS, Philippines - When she was growing up in the southern Philippines, Sheila Mae Perez's favorite game was to clamber up on to ships in the harbor of her home town and dive into the water.

"That was my playground," Perez says of the Sasa Wharf in Davao City. Nowadays the petite 22-year-old is considered one of the best divers in southeast Asia and life is much less carefree as she prepares for the Beijing Olympics in August.

At the Trace College sports camp in Laguna province, south of Manila, Perez repeatedly jumps from a three-meter springboard, twisting and somersaulting before plunging into a deep pool.

Emerging from the water, she climbs up to the springboard and dives again. She carries on practicing until her Chinese coach, who trains her mostly through sign language, gives her a thumbs-up sign and an approving nod.

Perez was discovered in 1997 by local sports officials who had watched the children diving into the sea and spotted her talent. She is at the pool for 3-1/2 hours each day and also works out in a gym, practicing somersaults and tumbling.

"I just want to have fun in Beijing," Perez told Reuters, drying herself before climbing up to the diving platform again.

"It's a very tough field but it's still anybody's game. What if they all make a mistake and I am the only one who doesn't?"

Local heroine

After she was discovered, Perez trained in Manila for three years. She qualified for the 2000 Olympics Games in Sydney, finishing 32nd in the field of 56.

She also qualified for the 2004 Athens Olympics but was unable to compete.

She became a local heroine after taking three gold medals in the 2005 South East Asian Games in Manila when she won the 3-metre springboard, synchronized 3-metre springboard and 1-metre springboard.

"Today, Sheila is the best female diver in southeast Asia," her coach Zhang De Hu said.

Zhang, who was a top diver himself in Shanghai in the 1960s, was hired in 1997 to help raise the Philippines' standard in the pool. Aquatics is one of three disciplines to produce an Olympic medal for the Philippines although it has yielded nothing since 1932, when the country won bronze in the men's 200 meters breaststroke.

The Philippines have also won medals in boxing and athletics, the last a boxing silver in 1996.

"My goal is for our athletes to enter the finals at the Olympics," Zhang told Reuters, speaking in Mandarin.

"That is my hope. It is a very daring plan as the Philippines is a small country. And it was not very long ago that it started diving sports."

Body language

In addition to Perez, Zhang is coaching another Olympic hopeful, Ryan Fabriga.

Zhang speaks little English and no Filipino, so most of his instruction is through sign and body language.

If he is satisfied with how the diver executes the routine, he smiles, gives a thumbs-up sign and nods his head. When he is not happy, he scratches his head and contorts his body and legs to explain what went wrong.

Although Filipino divers have made significant gains to reach the top in southeast Asia, Zhang said they remained far behind divers from China, Russia, Germany and the United States.

There was little financial backing for the sport in the country, he said. "There's so much talent and potential here but they need to be motivated to do more."

Perez is undaunted by the high standards elsewhere in the world. "Out there, on the platform, we're all equal," she said.

"We just have to believe in ourselves, keep our fighting spirit and pray for God's help. If you ask others, it seems impossible to win gold. But my spirit of winning is there."
