here is a new piece of info... the land that sm supposedly bought along bajada is a no go...the deal fell through.

the sm group is supposedly eyeing to acquire an existing mall here in davao and plan to completely close it and renovate it to sm standards..... :runaway:

if you were made to choose...what would you do? acquire and exisiting mall ang renovate it?....or buy a raw piece of land and develop it? what would be more cost effective? what would be better in the medium to long term?

No Problem SiliconGulf.. I was delighted myself as well to bump into this info. Never thought it (Giant Durian Replica) was a yield of Kublai's artistry. I think i can call myself a silent fan of him since the time i checked out his bar inside Ponce Suites not so very long time ago.

My guess is the same with yours Philwily. Davao bargoers prefer Red horse though most of my friends would opt for San Mig Light.

if i were to choose, i would rather build a new mall..but if the existing mall were vicoria plaza ( a mall close to my heart as i have many HS memories there), then renovating Vp would be the best!!!!

Direct Air Linkages

Availability of direct flight from Davao City to Manado City in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Indonesia's Bouraq Airlines offered businessmen and tourists a shorter and faster route at affordable fare.
Previously, travel between the two cities via Manila and Jakarta took eight hours and cost US$1,070 (round trip).
The new direct route cut down travel time to an hour and ten minutes and fare to US$260.00.
Establishment of direct air link between Davao City and Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia, courtesy of Malaysia Airlines (MAS), during the period November 1995 to December 1997. Previously, it took five hours via Manila or three hours via Cebu at a cost of US$584.00 (round trip).
The direct route cut travel time to two hours and 25 minutes at US$449.00 (round trip).

Direct Sea Linkages

In 1994, Zamboanga-based Aleson Shipping Lines began to offer sea transport services between Zamboanga City and Sandakan, Sabah, Malaysia.
Followed by Sampaguita Shipping Lines, also based in Zamboanga, in servicing the same route.
In November 1996, Fajar Shipping Lines started to provide sea travel services between General Santos City and Bitung in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Tourism

When BIMP-EAGA was formalized in 1994, tourist arrivals in Mindanao began to significantly increase.
Several hotels and restaurants were also constructed to cater to the increased number of visitors.
Samal Casino Resort Hotel in the Island Garden City of Samal
The Marco Polo in Davao City

Policy Modification

The Philippines' warm response to worldwide initiatives towards a freer trade environment boosted its bid to become a key global player, particularly through the inclusion and participation of Mindanao and Palawan in the BIMP-EAGA. Concrete policy support to this included the following:

Exemption from travel tax. Beginning March 1995, the Philippine Government exempted travelers between BIMP-EAGA destinations from paying travel tax amounting to US$30.00. This encouraged transit through Mindanao as international gateway to or from the other BIMP-EAGA member-countries.
Decentralization of Philippine Contractors Accreditation Board (PCAB) functions. Resulting from the efforts of the Southern Philippines Core Group on Construction and Construction Materials, the functions of the PCAB at the Mindanao level were decentralized in September 1995 to facilitate licensing, accreditation and granting of exemptions, among others.
Full Disclosure Policy. Issued by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) through Memorandum Order No. 06 on April 1997, this makes obligatory the delineation and full disclosure of the terms of reference in the hiring of workers in foreign countries. Among the information required to be disclosed in the Terms of Reference (TOR) pursuant to this policy are compensation rate, accommodation facilities, occupational hazards, and length of employment, among others.
Special Border Crossing Agreement. The Philippines and Malaysia have institutionalized border crossing and border patrol cooperation mechanisms under the ambit of the Joint Committee on Border Cooperation (JCBC) established in 1993. Both countries are still in the process of finalizing the border crossing pass which is essential in the implementation of the said agreement. Nonetheless, the border crossing stations in Sandakan, Malaysia and Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, Philippines are being opened for the special border crossing arrangement. Meanwhile, Labuan in Malaysia and Balabak, as well as Taganak in the Philippines are considered for future opening, considering its joint development efforts in the Turtle Island Heritage Protected Area (TIHPA).
Mutual Recognition of Skills Standards and Certification. Based on an agreed set of skills standards, each member-country would issue a skills certificate that will facilitate employment and give preferential status to workers for overseas employment in other member-countries.
Uniform Port Tariff (UPT) Agreement. The agreement allows vessels docked at ports within BIMP-EAGA to enjoy reduced rates. In support to this agreement, the Board of Directors of the Philippines Ports Authority (PPA) passed a resolution allowing 50 percent reduction of dockage fees in any Mindanao port for vessels originating from other BIMP-EAGA ports. Brunei Darussalam and Indonesia have granted Philippine vessels the same incentive. Malaysia still has to do so.
EAGA Investments
As of 1997, total EAGA investments in Mindanao and Palawan amounted to US$29 million. Most of these investments came from Malaysia.

Sustained Growth of Mindanao and Palawan Economies

Mindanao's active participation in BIMP-EAGA has significantly contributed to the positive growth rate of its Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP). Poverty incidence in Mindanao has likewise dropped.

Socio-Cultural Gains

Renewing socio-cultural ties that date back to many centuries has served as a firm foundation for pursuing productive economic endeavors. Among the activities that have contributed to such are the BIMP-EAGA Food Festival, BIMP-EAGA Rodeo Lineman's Skills Olympics, BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games, BIMP-EAGA Friendship Marathon, EAGA Mountain Biking Competition and East ASEAN Mayor's Cup Golf Tournament.

I know notthing about red horse hahahaha. Have never seen the red horse beer in my life as far as I know. The thought pattern that led me to you was a combination of the color of your shirt, your age and your seemingly personal "power carisma" that I sense when reading your posts , that which I do understand, I do not understand all you write since most of it is in your language.

Curious about that nazi thread ,they discussed architecture? you mean their discussing the gas chambers, Daschau or Auswitz consentration camp , west wall or Hitlers "eagles nest " in Austria? :jk: i mean theirs not much construction all destruction in WII than that.

Dinabaw no, never seen them discuss gas chambers, concentration champs or the "eagle nest" in Austria. They discuss the estethic´s of the monolithic buildings during that time and then they discuss football and German tribes during the Roman Empire. Most of them express their dislike of the nazi ideology in that thread. There are many other german threads too dinabaw then just this nazi building thread.

Have a continious good Sunday evening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Dinabaw the only thing I say now is 2-0.

REGION 11 was recognized as having the Best Regional Peace and Order Council in the Philippines, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said yesterday.

In his weekly television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” aired live over ABS-CBN, Duterte said the city was also recognized as having the second best City Peace and Order Council.

“I will personally get the awards in Metro Manila next week,” Duterte said, adding he will not be in the city for several days because of some speaking engagements in Metro Manila after the RPOC awarding rites, including a lecture that he will hold in Capas, Tarlac.

Meanwhile, the mayor denied rumors he would not report for office on June 22 to avoid a meeting with US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenny who is scheduled the to visit the city to launch the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid)-supported anti-trafficking project.

“I have to personally get the awards since the president wanted me to get them personally,” he explained.

Although admitting he has opposed some US policies, Duterte said he has nothing against US officials because they are just doing their job.

Duterte has been at loggerheads with the US government after members of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation snatched American Michael Terence Meiring from his hospital bed in the city while he was recuperating from wounds after his hotel room was rocked by a powerful explosion on May 16, 2002.

Duterte even urged the US government to bring Meiring, reportedly a treasure hunter, back to the city to allow him to face the case filed against him before the court. RBB

By Josie San Pedro

http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=12818

Hi Josie:

What’s up? I hope everything is fine with you and the family – and of course, the Times, Davao’s very own paper that I grew up with.

I thought I’d leave a note for you before we fly back to San Francisco, California, in a few days, to first: apologize for not getting in touch with you earlier, and then, for leaving without dropping in at your office as a courtesy to a fellow journalist. But as they say on TV, I’ll be back” soon to do these courtesies.

You see when not traveling, Nora and I divide our time between San Francisco, California (where we’ve lived and raised a family for 37 years) and a modest 3-level, 2-bedroom country home in Mountain Haven, Barangay Eden, Toril.

It’s on a high spot just above Eden Nature Park. It’s not that far from Loleng’s Mountain Spring Resort. Mt. Talomo is behind us. The place has a stunning view of Davao City, Samal, Davao Gulf and Talikud Island.

We plan to stay here from two to three months a year. So, we’re part time residents of Davao City. And we like it.

Until last year, we spent our vacation in Europe where short-term rentals are rather affordable.

We chose this charming place to be the site of our vacation home because the weather is like spring in San Francisco. And, Davao City is my home.

My wife and I arrived here in April, actually in Cagayan de Oro City where we attended the 100th birthday celebration of my wife’s mother, Mrs. Consejo vda. De Varquez. We had a grand time – there was a big bash. Nora’s brothers and sisters and relatives from far and near came to join in the celebration.

From Cagayan de Oro, we drove to Davao. Funny, but for a few days, we stayed in Apo View and then Royal Mandaya Hotel because our place, while already finished and had all the appliances needed, had no furnishings yet.

Before we finally came in to occupy the house, we appealed to Father Felix Labor of St. Michael Archangel Church in Eden to bless the place. He was kind enough to do the rites.

Earlier, to conform with tradition, we had brought in first into the house a sack of upland rice we bought from Valencia City in Bukidnon and a can of Morton salt to ensure abundance to those who’d live in the place. We’re still doing this, aren’t we?

The first night, we slept on an airbed that we shipped in a balikbayan box from California.

For weeks, my wife and I scoured Davao – Mana of Davao, Mandaue Foam, Pambahay, SM, NCCC and Gaisano and other stores for items to furnish the house. You name it, Davao has it.

Right now, we have people busy landscaping and building the fence.

We’re hoping you could visit us during our next trip here. We look forward to that day.

Eden people are kind, friendly and polite. It’s peaceful and refreshing here.

Living here is a pleasant adventure. For the first time, my wife and I rode a habal-habal when we went to hear mass on our first Sunday here. The ride wasn’t that bad, but my wife swore never to ride in it again.

For a joy ride, we take the pedicab usually from the parking lot of Chow King in Toril here. The ride is bumpy along three separate portions of the road to Eden that are still unpaved. (Right now, everytime we run into a politician of note, we ask that the road project there be expedited. I know it’s not going to work. That we’re nobody around isn’t lost on us, but we’ll keep on trying) The road is winding and steady climb – pedicabs roar, groan, howl, backfire and sometimes overheat their way up there. There are no regular scheduled trips of jeepneys from Bayabas Crossing to here and back. Travel to this place is by taxicabs and private cars. For the locals, habal-habal is king, it’s the principal means of transportation in and around these parts.

Our neighbor drives us to church on Sundays, and every now and then, would drive us to Toril for which we’re grateful. We rent a car or hitch a ride, (believe me), when we go downtown to watch movies, shop or pick up groceries. Most of the time our friend, lawyer Ben B. Baldoza, drives us to downtown and back. So our forthcoming plan would include an investment in a 4-wheel drive vehicle.

A habal-habal ride down to Toril is P20, the ride up from there to Eden is P30 because it’s uphill, according to the drivers.

The two popular resorts that draw people to this western side of the city are the Loleng’s Mountain Spring Resort in Bayabas and the Eden Nature Park here in Barangay Eden. Both are excellent resorts.

Mountain Haven is a little more than 17 miles west of City Hall, but it’s really a distant place, a hideaway, in a sense. It’s way out of the metropolitan hassle and noise where morning comes with the crowing of rosters not in any way associated with denying relationship with people.

Here, we read papers, including the Mindanao Times, that visiting friends bring. It’s only when we go down to Toril early in the day when we pick up the papers from a news stand located near Mercury Drugstore. We always try to get there before noon, because local papers sell out quickly after that. When friends call to visit, we’d request them to bring us newspapers with a promise of refund of the cost. They always refuse a refund!

It’s also here where I write my regular columns for two newspapers in the U.S., one for a New York periodical, and the other for a California weekly. Besides these two papers, I write features, commentaries, travelogues and the genre for a number of community newspapers in the West Coast that solicit them. In fact, weeks after arriving home in San Francisco, I have tentative plans to head for Macau to write about the place for a magazine. Earlier, I had plans to write another piece about Samal (I’ve yet to call Samal…) but I have to put it off for next year. I sometimes ask myself whether I have really retired from journalism or not.

(These may be good items for your space):

It’s going to be a big wedding for Barbie Bangoy, the daughter of Dabawenyos Mr. and Mrs. Milo Malones, (she is the former Myrna Bangoy). Barbie is one of three lovely daughters of the Maloneses who was born in Davao City but grew up in South San Francisco, California. The wedding will be held during the first week of July in San Francisco. I don’t know the groom’s name.

Another big event in July will be a reunion of the Brokenshire International Foundation (BIF), mostly alumni of the College of Nursing of Brokenshire Colleges of Davao City. The event will be held on July 14-16 in Las Vegas, Nevada. It’s going to be an all-Davao event.

By the way, I’m pleased to inform you that I have improved considerably – my texting. My wife is picking up the skills as well.

About driving in the streets of Davao? My wife says she could drive here with only a minimum of lessons. Well, give me some time, will you?

I think this is all for now. So see you soon.

Sincerely,

Cris D. Kabasares

(Cris was formerly writing for the Mindanao Times, long before he and his wife left for the U.S. in the early ‘60s. He now writes about Davao from the heart of someone who truly loves the city, his hometown). Welcome home, Cris, from this corner.

There is a school for those who want to hone their English communication skills and become a call center agent. It’s called JIB e-Academy at Mabini corner Araullo Streets, Davao City. Owned and managed by the Joji Ilagan Career Centre Foundation, Incorporated, the e-Academy is supported by the Department of Education, the Technical Skills Development Authority, and the City Council Committee on Education. With partner training institutions like ACS Global Solutions and the John F. Kennedy Center Foundation, the school affords its graduates a great chance to land a job in the contact center industry.

Daily interviews are conducted in the afternoon at the e-Academy for those who wish to enroll and avail themselves of the scholarships slots. Classes are held in three sessions, from 1:00 to 5:00 P.M., 6:00 to 10:00 P.M., and 9:00 to 12:00 midnight. Competent trainers from Manila have been hired to teach the aspiring call center agents from Davao and nearby provinces.

The global demand for call center agents is so enormous that the Joji Ilagan Career Centre Foundation itself put up a call center called Six Eleven Global Services where the e-Academy graduates may opt to work. Mr. Celso Santiago of JFK Center Foundation has even offered the e-Academy graduates his help to those who wish to gain additional training or employment in Manila.

The JIB e-Academy’s Communication Skills and Call Center Training first batch of graduates received their certificates last June 15, 2006 in the presence of top officials from CHED, TESDA, 1st District City Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta, and members of the media.

Inquiries about the JIB e-Academy programs are accepted at telefax (082) 305-5522, 305-2255, mobile phone 0920-9510804 or email jib.eacademy@gmail.com.

Dinabaw monolithic is gigantic , huge, maffioso forms and in this nazi time and buildings it seems to be a pahllic symbol of autonomic tribes of Germany :)

About nazism I agree with you it makes you feel bad cause it reminds us of the dark sides in humanity and that the human race carry this potential within. Still alot of simular to nazi time activities excists today over the world that is even more scary. Aren´t we on this globe suposed to learn from our misstakes?

Davao’s Best Coffee

BLUGRé COFFEE is Davao’s first and leading specialty coffee shop, founded in 1998 by husband and wife, Gatchi and Larcy Gatchalian, both Manileños but consider themselves Dabawenyos by heart. Blugré Coffee has two branches – one at Landco Corporate Center along J.P. Laurel Avenue in Bajada and the other at Matina Town Square along McArthur Highway in Matina. (Its sister company is Kape’t Pandesal located at SM City Davao). Established in June 1998, Blugre Coffee’s claim to fame is its signature drink, DURIAN GATCHPUCCINO, a hot cappuccino concoction that blends espresso and the fruit durian wonderfully. (Also available is DURIAN LARCEPUCCINO, the cold version of Durian Gatchpuccino). It is dubbed as the king of all coffees (durian being the king of all fruits).

Blugré is responsible for creating a coffee culture in Davao, and leads the pack mainly because of the coffee lifestyle experience which Dabawenyos embraced up to now. Blugré Coffee is actually a spin-off from the couple’s clothing business under the brand BLUGRé. But the owners’ fascination and love for coffee led them to putting up not just a coffee place but a coffee brand. To the locals, Blugré now is synonymous to coffee. Aside from your regular specialty coffee shop menu items like espresso, latte, mocha, cappuccino, Blugré also serves LARCEPUCCINO COFFEE, an ice-blended coffee drink which boasts of a variety of concoctions, and one variety is being served in what Blugré calls Larcepuccino Fun Cup, where the fun cup is to go serving as a souvenir; LARCEPUCCINO CREAM, a non-coffee ice-blended drink; BLUGRé SHAKERS, variety of shakes with coffee, plus chocolate drink, milk, and flavored tea drinks.

Blugré has also became famous for its line of desserts and pastries like its bestsellers Chocolate Chips Cake, Choco Torte with Cream Sauce, Blueberry Cheesecake, Banana Cream Pie, Choco Dome, Banana Streusels, Cinnablu, our very own cinnamon, Butterscotch, Fudge brownie, and many more.
Blugré also offers pica-pica, panini, pasta, and heavy meals. Blugré also carries merchandise items like souvenir shirts (men’s and ladies), ceramic mugs, stainless mugs, and frosted mugs in different sizes and shapes.
Fast forward and SEVEN years after, Blugré is able to gain a strong foothold of the market due to its product and marketing innovation.

Blugré Coffee was recently chosen as the National Shopper’s Choice as Best Coffee Shop in Davao as conferred by Asia-Pacific Shopper’s Institute, Shopper’ Choice Magazine, Essence Privilege Card, and the Asian Philippine Association of Marketing Professionals FOR THE YEARS 2003, 2004, and 2005, and also received the Philippine Marketing Excellence Award as the Most Outstanding Coffee Shop in Davao City for 2004 awarded by the Asian Institute of Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

Blugré Coffee is now ready to offer franchise outside Davao with location as the primary consideration for awarding such franchise. Pending franchise applications are General Santos, Zamboanga and Cagayan De Oro. For inquiries, pls visit rkfranchise.com/wefranchise/blugré.

@junax..sa may ecoland yan no? havent seen it pa baya..how big ang building? ilan floors?

( neway any updates din re: dusit and riverfront?)

^^ if it's indeed 30 storeys, it'll be a a big jump from the current 18 we have at marco polo. i remember before (way back in the 60s and 70s) that the psychological and physical barrier for buildings was 7. some said it was probably because of the soil and physical condition of the ground. davao in the downtown area are pretty much swamp and silt from the buildup of davao river. can somebody confirm that davao is more like a delta?

just noticed your avatar..is that you? nice lighting effects BTW :D

our structural enginer tld me that during the const of marcopolo, it was suppose to be 20+ storeys but it was reduced to 18 because the soil wasnt good enough.des pues, 30 may not be achievable ( if indeed somebody plans to put up a 30 storey hotel here :D)

Yea, I love flowers and fruits very much dinabaw! Yea I have been sitting many times on that street in Copenhagen drinkiing coffe it is a nice place to look out on the boats...yeah I love to see my corner of the world across the sea form Copenhagen. hi lena, i was not planning of having an a/c at home. but i guess, we the hot summer looming, my family (especially my wife) will be so stressed out with the heat and humidity. we had the a/c installed over the weekend. but i'm still wary about really using it (with energy costs soaring) so we are pretty selective when using it.

thanks for the comment. i'm still building up the collection.

maybe buhangin all the way to panacan can support the much higher structures. pero kung downtown all the way to matina, i doubt it.

Hello to all!

Budget for the PTA Greenpark is included in new loan package, including
EB Lopez Sports Complex and Solid Waste Management Program (Landfill), total P450-500M.

What was spent for recent improvements at PTA was only part of our P8M budget for the Boy Scout Jamboree.

Expect the loan process to be completed in few months ... in time for implementation late this year or early next year. :)

SPORTS COMPLEX?!?!?!!!! really? a real sports complex or just a mini one? :) as the budget may be too small @ P500M to divide for 3 projects.

so it may not be possible to have the park before the year ends huh? :(

Besides soil conditions, I had also heard that there was a limit to building height for a while because the fire departments did not have the proper equipment for taller buildings.

hahaha well, well, what can I say MtApo.....:applause: your swedish is good, alittle problems with the grammatic and some words , some words are in Norweigan but other then that ..fine ....

I understand you have pressures and challenges. :) and yes, I do see my friends now and then but I do not go out with partiet ("partiet" has more then one meaning but here it means=:gossip: the political party). "lik helgen" can mean a few things...you wonder what I do with the "lik"=dead bodies, do you really wonder that MtApo? ;) "helgen" means the weekend. Well I have no dead bodies here :) so I guess you mean what I do or did on the weekend: I do swiming alot now cause it is hot and summer and I just love it. Also I help my pappa.

Midsummer celebration is an old pegan feast that we swedes have every year. It was once up on a time a thanksgiving to the feritlity gods but today the celebrations is different , we do not sacrify maidens anymore and a man may not lay down any woman he likes, which was the traditions in the past past times. All to pay thanksgiving to the fetility gods. We became christians so now the traditions are different.
Today we eat alot, are out alot, stay up all night, there is dancing and people drink way to much, many drunks, then many swedish girls keept some of the old traditions and decorate their hair with flowers and they are so pretty really and to get to know the man she is going to marry she has to pick 7 different flowers and lay them under her pillow and be queit and not say a word and then a man is going to be in her dreams, the furture husband many girls still do this old traditions. Only not all girls marry anymore we have this relationship called "sambo=live together", were a man and a woman decide to live together without any type of cermonial and many couples live like that all their life and it is accepted by our society both among the people and with the law.

Jag önskar dig en mycket givande tisdag, min vän! :)

If Davao were to host national meets, it can also get subsidy. More and more facilities will then be built in the 20-has. complex. Like Rome, our sports complex will not be built in a day.

Don't be pessimistic. Be watchful and vigilant that not a single centavo of this fund would go to waste or corruption. :)

THE Agdao public market has won the first national search for "Huwarang Palengke 2006" conducted by the Department of Agriculture (DA).

City Economic Enterprise officer-in-charge Francisco Vales Jr. said 14 local government units in Davao Region submitted entries to the search for the best wet market in the country.

Of the 14 wet markets endorsed by the DA regional evaluation committee, Vales said, the DA national evaluation committee validated and short-listed seven semi-finalists.

It was then submitted to the Oversight Committee for revalidation, which in turn forwarded to the board of judges for selection of five national winners.

Agdao public market topped this year's winners followed by General Santos City public market, Legaspi City public market, Pardo public market in Cebu City and San Fernando City public market in La Union.

"We are doing our best to improve the sanitation of our public markets. This award will serve as a challenge to us," Vales said Monday.

The criteria in the evaluation are physical requirements and hygiene and sanitation for 50 percent, adherence to consumer laws for 25 percent, and weekly prices monitoring for another 25 percent, for a total of 100 percent.

Vales said the City Government has strictly implemented the three criteria of the award in all its public markets.

"We are not only improving the sanitation but we have also installed the timbangan ng bayan, put-up a consumer desk, form a consumer protection program and conduct a daily monitoring of prices," he said.

Vales said the city will receive P500,000 being first prize winner.

"If it will be given to us, 50 percent of it will be apportioned to the market vendors association and the other half will be allotted for the keeping-up of the market building in Agdao," he said. (BRQ)

This article sheds light into the sensorized traffic signalization project queries.

By Romeo R. Braceros Jr.

THE City Hall has declared the perennial drainage problem of Davao City, rendering major thoroughfares flooded after heavy rains, to be gone in just two years.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said the only thing that hampers the implementation of the drainage system of the city is the feasibility study, which took longer than they expected because they have to map out the potential underground tunnel systems.

But he said the program will be definitely finished by 2008 after his term.

"The one who will probably inaugurate the new drainage facilities will be the new mayor after me," Duterte said.

The urban drainage and flood control is part of the P990 million-loan for the Davao Development Plan approved by the Land Bank of the Philippines on September 28, 2004.

The plan includes the construction of farm-to-market roads/alternative roads project costing P160 million; shelter and urban land reform program worth P100 million; road and drainage maintenance program worth P130 million; and the sensorized traffic signalization project worth P350 million. The drainage and flood control project would cost taxpayers about P250 million.

"If the drainage will not be finished early, definitely the traffic signalization program will be started before the end of the year," the mayor said.

City Engineer Leoncio Evasco Jr. had said the P250 million would just be enough to fund the first phase of the drainage system project, which would cover 18 main drainage systems in the city. He said the city government actually needs P1 billion to finance the plan of putting up a viable drainage system, to be implemented in four phases.

Duterte said they plan to start with the drainage system by November, when the traffic signalization project would have been completed.

"The people have nothing to worry since the money allocated for this drainage problem is there and properly accounted for," he said.

Region 11 is RP's best RPOC

REGION 11 was recognized as having the Best Regional Peace and Order Concil in the Philippines, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said yesterday.

In his weekly "Gikan Sa Masa, Para Sa Masa" aired live over ABS-CBN, Duterte said the city was also recognized as having the second Best City Peace and Order Council.

"I will personally get the awards in Metro Manila next week," Duterte said, adding he will not be in the city for several days because of some speaking engagements in Metro Manila after RPOC awarding rites, including a lecture that he will hold in Capas, Tarlac.

Meanwhile, the mayor denied rumors he would not report for office on June 22 to avoid a meeting with US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenny who is scheduled to visit the City to launch the United States Agency for International Development (USaid)-supported anti-trafficking project.

"I have to personally get the awards since the president wanted me to get them personally," he explained.

Although admitting he has opposed some US policies, Duterte said he has Nothing against US officials because they are just doing their job.

Duterte has been at loggerheads with the US government after members of the Us Federal Bureau of Investigation snatched American Michael Terence Meiring from his hospital bed in the city while he hasrecuperating from wounds after his hotel room was rocked by a powerful explosion on May 16, 2002.

Duterte even urged the US government to bring Meiring, repotedly a treasure hunter, back to the city to allow him to face the case filed against him before the court.

If laughter is the best medicine, this woman is surely the doctor. Television host, entertainer and businesswoman Leoniza “Onnie” Alfaro has spent the past six years entertaining and tickling customers with her kind of comedy.

Onnie started her profession as a stand-up comedian in 1997 at the now-defunct Joke Box along Rizal Street. It was in this sing-along joint where she was able to hone her talent in entertaining people. Night after night, she enthralled her guests and made sure that they all go home happy and entertained.

A year later, Onnie moved to Studio Box, a sing-along bar at the Victoria Plaza entertainment compound. At Studio Box, she was able to whittle her niche in the local entertainment scene with her singing and hilarious skits, capturing her own audience who have stuck with her in the past years.

Devoted to her craft, Onnie always makes sure that her jokes would click every time she cracks them. Although there were also times when her jokes would fall flat, she gets away with it with her funny retorts and witty quips.

Her talent shone even brighter when GMA Davao picked her as one of their first batch of talents for their variety show “Singgit Davao”. In the Sunday show, Onnie strutted her stuff and became even more popular with her amusing fashion of entertaining television viewers.

She was not only one of the hosts of the show but also a weekly performer as she was regularly tasked to sing and dance in production numbers. Her weekly television stint was virtually an extension of what she does on a nightly basis in the music bar.

Unfortunately, in 2000, the owners of Studio Box decided to close down the joint. Alarmed at the thought that many would lose their jobs, Onnie made a quick and bold decision to take over the place with the support of her Japanese business partner Kozo Maeda.

Determined to succeed in their venture, Onnie and Kozo refurbished and made significant changes inside the bar, then renamed it Studio Onnie.

Blessings continue to pour as she, along with tourism officer and this writer, now co-hosts the top-rating weekly reality-magazine television show “Dinhing Dapita Sadya” for ABS-CBN Southern Mindanao with her very own segment, “Onnie 911”. This even gave her a wider audience as the show is being broadcast all over the world through The Filipino Channel.

Six successful years later, Onnie felt the growth of her bar with their increasing number of clients and functions. After months of hunting for a new location, she finally found a new home for Studio Onnie in a bustling entertainment center along F. Torres Street.

Inaugurated just recently, the new and bigger Studio Onnie can now accommodate 100 persons. It has a cocktail bar and a long bar, a spacious dance floor, and a mezzanine for VIPS and special events. With its roomy interiors and state-of-the-art sound system, the music bar is a perfect venue for birthdays, weddings, corporate events, baptism and other events.

Her version of crispy tenga, kinilaw, buttered chicken and chicken peanut are certified palate pleasers. With her business partner’s affinity for Japanese food (he is also the owner Akiko Japanese Restaurant in Victoria Plaza), she also dedicated the open-air area for their Japanese burger shop. These surely make their sing-along bar stand out from the rest.

Every night, Studio Onnie delights their audience with their funny stand-up comedians and sing-along masters (Mocha, Gretchen and Claudette on Mondays, CJ, Mocha and Jay on Tuesdays, Gretchen, Claudette and CJ on Wednesdays, Ahbet, Jay and Marlon on Thursdays, Gretchen, CJ and Marlon on Fridays, Ahbet, Mocha and Claudette on Saturdays, and Ahbet and CJ on Sundays) together with Onnie’s Angels Dancers.

“I feel truly blessed that, after all these years, I still have the support of my clients and friends. I feel grateful that ABS-CBN has made a gamble and allowed me to co-host one of their regional shows. Most importantly, especially with the expansion of our business, I am very thankful that my business partner, Kozo, is with me all the way. This is probably the rewards I got from God from working very hard, and doing what is right and good not just to myself but most especially to other people,” Onnie said during her recent birthday bash at Studio Onnie.

Behind the lovable, smiling face is a diligent, prayerful and appreciative lady. Compared to other showbiz personalities, the Onnie that people see on television and on stage is exactly the same Onnie they see in person - a good friend, a generous woman and always full of joy.

Ako nalang tubag bro basig bc is Konsehal..hehehe

Ingon ni Mayor definetly mahuman na tanan kanang traffic lights by November , nagsugod naman sila ug taud of mga poste!

There are two LBP loans - the first P990 million includes the traffic signalization. But this particular project was downgraded when the mayor decided to concentrate on solid waste management. Not really aware what is its status. Im not sure about these mga poste dinabaw.

The second loan involved the PTA park and Sports complex.

So we wont get discouraged and become pessimistic, we should distinguish what are plans, plans per se, and what are funded projects. There is a big differences between our wish list of plans and those that get funded.

But yes, even if some plans get funds, implementation is another problem. I believe the roof deck is under this category.

That is the reason we need citizens' participation. Help monitor. And shout Hoy gising! if our officials are sleeping on their jobs. :bash:

Russian airline to establish routes in Mindanao and EAGA MINDANEWS
Written by OPAPP
Wednesday, 21 June 2006
MANILA (OPAPP) -- Mindanao’s airline and tourism industry takes another big leap as a Filipino-Russian owned airline company, Mosphil Aero Incorprated, gears up in setting new direct flights to Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and the Republic of Palau.

According to Mosphil Aero Inc. President Ibragim Sharifkulov, the airline company is putting up international and domestic flights that will primarily service passenger and cargo traffic in the island region.
“Our expansion in Mindanao is part of the company’s mission to provide air travel and cargo services to potential tourist destinations in the Philippines needing reliable means of transportation,” Sharifkulov said.

In addition, Sharifkulov specifically identified Zamboanga, Jolo, Tawi-Tawi and Davao as key areas being targeted by Mosphil Aero in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza also stressed that establishing more domestic and international air links are vital in accelerating economic activities and promoting tourism for the entire island region.

“Mindanao is a strategic place for airline investments due to the increasing number of domestic and foreign tourist and investors along with the existing BIMP-EAGA economic cooperation,” Secreatary Dureza said.

Secretary Dureza also said that the government and business sector are working closely to promote flights with the 4-member countries of BIMP-EAGA in the South.

At present, the BIMP-EAGA roadmap to development currently aims to increase trade, investment and tourism in the sub-regional cooperation within a period of five (5) years.

Specifically, by 2010 the BIMP-EAGA roadmap is poised to increase intra and extra trade among BIMP-EAGA focus areas by 10%, increase investments in the sub-region by 10% and increase tourism movement in the growth polygon by 20%.

The Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) was created in March 1994 to increase trade, tourism and investments among the member countries of the growth polygon with Mindanao and Palawan as one of the key focus areas for cooperation. (OPAPP)

Davao dialect backed
as RP national language

DAVAO CITY: The Filipino language as used in Davao is being pushed as the Philippine national language by the outgoing University of the Philippines president, Francisco Nemenzo.

“The core of the real Filipino language is the ‘Filipino’ as spoken in Davao and not the Balagtas Tagalog in Bulacan [Luzon],” according to Ne*menzo. He urged UP-Mindanao to pursue the idea.

Nemenzo was in Davao City recently to unveil the marker for the P40-million administration building of the University of the Philippines-Mindanao.

The Bisaya-speaking Ne*menzo had disagreed with a proposal to adopt a national language based on the number of Filipinos speaking the dialect.

“A language and its usage should grow and that is what is happening in Davao,” he said. A real national language, he said, blossoms and grows continuously—and that is how “Filipino” is spoken in Davao.

Nemenzo did not say how Davao Filipino has grown or blossomed, nor did he give specific comparisons between “Davao Filipino” and what he called “Balagtas Tagalog.”

Former education undersecretary Isagani R. Cruz has expressed that for him “Filipino” as presently adapted in Philippine schools “is the English-Tagalog code switch.”

The debate over which of the more than 100 dialects and languages used in this archipelago has been around for at least half a century.

In 1908 the Philippine Commission under the US government, pushed for a Philippine language institute, but the legislation was rejected by the Philippine Assembly.

During the Commonwealth period, Commonwealth Act 184 created the National Language Institute, which studied Philippine dialects to determine which among them could evolve into the national language.

In 1937 the Institute recommended Tagalog, the main dialect of native-born Filipinos in Southern Luzon provinces including Bulacan.

In 1959 the Department of Education called the Tagalog-based national language “Pi*lipino,” later on “Filipino.”

The sixties was a period of the “puristang Tagalog,” with proponents coming out with such word for “chair” as salumpuwit, literally meaning “butt-catcher.” Heretofore, “chair” was simply upuan, or “a place to sit on.”

Non-Tagalog speakers rebelled against the purist trend, and the collision continues to this day.

Upgraded Davao Airport Ready for More Passengers, Bigger Aircraft

DAVAO CITY – With air transportation crucial to economic and social connectivity in the Philippine archipelago, the new $128 million state-of-the-art international airport in this city is a welcome development. It is now fully operational and is raring to take in more passengers and bigger aircraft.

With financing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Davao airport has been upgraded and expanded to provide reliable and safe all-weather operations that meet international standards and remove infrastructure bottlenecks which were constraining the growth of domestic and international air services. It will also enhance Davao’s access to nearby markets and improve the overall economic prospects of the Southern Philippines, and could be considered one vital link for the intermodal transport network essential for this area.

Last year, actual passenger volume already surpassed one million domestic passengers flown in by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Asian Spirit out of 14 daily local flights. International passengers to and from Manado and Singapore reached almost 25,000. But Davao’s spacious and modern terminal building is designed to accommodate much more, and can easily accommodate up to twice its designed minimum passenger capacity of one million passengers.

The old airport terminal accommodated less than one million passengers in its last year of operation. It did not attract international flights and the city therefore fell short of its strategic role in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The passenger terminal had exceeded its capacity and the instrument landing system was not usable for precision approaches and landings. As a result, international flights did not fly to and from Davao, and international passengers heading for or leaving Davao were forced to use Manila as a transfer point.

Today, its present daily passenger volume is roughly 1,500, with the early morning peak hour servicing the bulk of that number. The succeeding flights do not have as much passenger traffic. But even at its peak, the airport can handle the steady inflow of passengers with its 14 domestic and 14 international check-in counters, almost double than its previous number of counters. The Check-in counters are equipped with electronic weighing scales and conveyors and its baggage handling system is also computerized.

The upgraded airport was funded through a loan from the ADB, approved in 1994, which provided $41 million while the European Investment Bank provided $23 million. The original cost of the project was $105 million but due to foreign exchange escalation costs, the Asian financial crisis, and land acquisition costs, total cost of the Project reached $128 million.

The airport, officially named Francisco Bangoy International Airport, opened on Dec. 2, 2003. The 209-hectare airport development for both airside and landside civil works was constructed in four years’ time. The airport upgrading consisted of runway extension of 500 meters, achieving a usable take-off length of 3,000 meters that could now accommodate currently operated wide-body aircraft of major airlines, even 747s. The installation of a new landing instrumentation system (ILS) for both Runways 05 and 23 upgraded its compliance to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) operating category - Precision Approach Category 1, similar to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It can accommodate 8 to 10 aircraft landings per hour, depending on the size, and has the equivalent 8 gate holding areas for those aircraft.

“The Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is considered the most advanced here in the Philippines, even more sophisticated than NAIA’s,” boasts assistant airport manager Joey Saddam who was then the project manager of the airport construction.

The project also covers the construction of a new Malay architecture-inspired terminal building which cost P1 billion and is four times bigger than the old airport terminal. It is highly computerized, more secure, and has more commercial spaces for concessionaires at approximately 9,000 sq. m. It has four new units of boarding bridges for passengers. Airport Manager Frederick San Felix considers their security system quite strict. Baggage is regularly screened three times prior to passenger check-in/boarding. “It’s better that you know that all the baggages have been thoroughly checked… for your own protection,” he stresses.

Besides the main terminal building, there are also new support facilities like the Administration Building, the Central Plant Building, Airfield Maintenance Building, and Fire/Crash/Rescue Building. It has a 688-slot car parking area and 4 slots for shuttle buses. It has a 3-megawatt standby power generator.

The Energy Management Control System for the centralized air conditioning system, electrical and lights system, is now located in just one room. Its Access Control System ensures that not all airport personnel have access to all areas of the airport such that certain cards can only enter selected doors and everybody entering them is registered.

It also has a Flight Information Display System and Closed Circuit Television System complementing the terminal’s security system. The Cargo Terminal Building covers almost 5,580 sq. meters and can handle up to 84,600 tons a year. In 2005, actual cargo volume was almost 44,000 tons.

With such modern facilities, the Davao City airport officials feel they can justify their proposed five-fold increase in terminal fees from P40 to P200 per passenger, the same as the fee being charged in Manila and Cebu airports. Rentals are also proposed to be increased to raise the airport’s revenues, which only grossed almost P120 million in 2005, for its future sustainability.

With a modern international airport in place, it is hoped that the vast economic potentials of Mindanao will finally be unlocked and optimized to the fullest after decades-long peace and order problems and poverty concerns. (Rita Festin/Asian Development Bank).

Davao International Airport is still expanding... i've read somewhere here that it will be upgraded one more time (additional gadgets and technical equipments, taxi lane, airport hotel and terminal expansion). 5J is scheduled to to take off the hongkong-davao route and viva macau is coming this august. i can only say one more thing.... Open skies!!!

Davao Region has RP’s best Regional Peace and Order Council

DAVAO CITY – Davao Region was recognized as having the Best Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) in the Philippines, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte announced over the weekend.

In his weekly television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” aired live over a local television station here, Duterte said Davao Region was also recognized as having the second best City Peace and Order Council.

“I will personally get the awards in Metro Manila next week,” Duterte said, adding he will not be in the city for several days because of some speaking engagements in Metro Manila after the RPOC awarding rites, including a lecture in Capas, Tarlac.

Meanwhile, the mayor denied rumors he would not report for office on June 22 to avoid a meeting with US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenny who was scheduled to visit the city to launch the United States Agency for International Development (USAID)-supported anti-trafficking project.

“I have to personally get the awards since the President wanted me to be there personally,” he explained.

Although admitting he has opposed some US policies, Duterte said he has nothing against US officials because they are just doing their job.

Duterte has been at loggerheads with the US government since members of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation snatched American Michael Terence Meiring from his hospital bed here while recuperating from wounds that he (Meiring) incurred when his hotel room was rocked by a powerful explosion on May 16, 2002.

Duterte even urged the US government to bring Meiring, reportedly a treasure hunter, back to the city to allow him to face the case filed against him before the court.

THE One Network Bank (ONB), the country's largest rural bank, will expand its network by opening seven more branches in Mindanao.

ONB president Alex V. Buenaventura said three of these new branches will be in Manay, Davao Oriental, Malaybalay, Bukidnon and Tibungco. It will open on June 19.

He said they will not yet divulge where the four other branches will be established to protect their business from competitors.

Buenavantura said with the expansion, they will be hiring more employees. Four will be hired from the area where the new branch will be opened and two others will be taken out from existing branches to train the new employees.

"We need to hire four locals those that are from the area, especially in far flung-areas," Buenaventura said during the press conference Saturday.

He, however, said they are not planning to expand their network outside Mindanao for the next 2 years.

"We are not really very much on competing with commercial banks in commercial centers but in remote areas with big potentials. We want money in Mindanao will stay in Mindanao," he said, adding that Mindanao has a lot of potentials in the sugar, rice and rubber industry.

During the same press conference, the bank declared a P171.4 million dividend, the biggest amount of dividend pay out by a rural bank.

During the 3rd Annual ONB stockholders' Meeting held at the Davao Trade and Convention Center over the weekend, the bank paid out P171.4 million as dividends to its stockholders, P164.1 million of which is in the form of shares of stocks and P7.3 million in the form of cash.

Buenaventura said the bank's success can be attributed to the small accounts entered their bank.

"We thank the small account clients of Mindanao for trusting the bank and we would like to relay to them that we are committed to them," Buenaventura said during a press conference at the Regines restaurant Saturday.

In a news release, the bank said the ONB's dividend policy prescribes the distribution of dividends more in the form of stocks than in cash.

"This in turn, provides ONB with the financial capacity to invest in the needed infrastructure and in technology for the expansion of its branch network and the deployment of ATM services in the countryside," the bank said.

Today, ONB has 62 branches and 41 ATMs. They have a total of 340,000 depositors and 70,000 borrowers.

WITH Mindanao electricity consumers wary of near-term power outages, Energy Secretary Raphael P.M. Lotilla noted that they are partly pinning hope on prospects that the 210-megawatt coal-fired power facility of Steag State Power Inc. will gear up for an expansion.

At the moment, the energy chief can only make assurance that the government will do its level best to address looming supply shortfall in the area.

"There is a big possibility that there would be additional supply for the island if Mindanao coal plant expands," he told an inquiry of the Joint Congressional Power Commission.

The facility is scheduled for commercial operation January next year and this is seen adding up 15 percent of the island grid's supply. However, this is not enough to guarantee reliable supply for Mindanao, even in the immediate term.

Expansion

Apart of the transmission line link-up being pursued by the National Transmission Corporation (TransCo), Lotilla opined that the best solution to plug capacity gap would still be to put a power plant or expand the capacity of existing facilities in the area.

"It is ideal for the source of power to be put up in the island and nearer to where the demand is," he stressed.

Studies of TransCo indicated that Mindanao has a surplus capacity of 373 megawatts.

However, more than 70 percent of this generating capacity is found in Northern Mindanao with the southern part only accounting for more than 20 percent.

Demand, however, is booming in the South, fuelled largely by the economic growth being experienced by the cities of Davao and General Santos which have seen electricity demand increase by 10 percent annually.

The siting and design of future capacity, according to the energy secretary, shall of course take into consideration the recurrent problem of terrorist attacks in some parts of Mindanao.

TransCo has been lining up the Leyte-Mindanao interconnection project; but JCPC co-chairman and Lanao del Norte Representative Alipio Cirilo V. Badelles said that this should first be subjected to a more cautious study, because if supply shortages in Visayas or Mindanao occurs, the consumers might be saddled with paying for fixed costs of facilities that might not be useful in the future.

Hello!

Granting the traffic signalization system as stated by the mayor is true. I doubt the timetable. This project would require not just civil works - pagtukod og mga poste - it would likewise involve mechanical, electronic and computerization work. Nga sa akong tan-aw dili kaayahon within now and November. Let us to see then. Mao ba kini ang Filipino akording to Dodong Nemenzo? :)

Hey your guys and gals. Anyone free for the next four days. Visit the Central Bank Convention Hall for the food processing and packaging tech expo (http://funchain.com/post/0000002888). PIA Press Release
06/21/2006

Davao City (21 June) -- The Anti-Smoking Task Force chaired by Dr. Dormilyn Villareiz urged members of media to be advocates of anti-smoking.

In a recent press conference, she said that once accredited, members of the media are authorized to check on those violating the anti-smoking law or inform the nearest police unit on the presence of people going against the ordinance on anti-smoking.

Villareiz said about 80 percent of their advocacy work had been achieved since its implementation four years ago.

The task force, she said, are now looking into selling of cigarettes within the 100-meter radius of schools and a dozen vendors were already apprehended including students with ages 18 years and above.

She said the 4,182 apprehended persons smoking in public places is just among the many tasked that they had done and consider as strong points in their campaign the period when many Dabawenyos no longer smoke in enclosed buildings especially in public places when there are children.

“Our goal really is for the people of Davao to follow the anti-smoking law,” she said.

She admitted however that it is hard and difficult to achieve the “Smoke free Davao” but making everyone vigilant on anti-smoking is another thing.

She reminded the smokers to exercise caution and that they will continue their campaign of educating the adult on the effects of smoking.

There are about 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes and 50 of these can cause cancer, she said.

She said there are two kinds of smoke from a lighted cigarettes of which the smoker gets 25 percent of the main stream smoke plus the 75 percent side stream smoke that will also be pass on to other people.

“There is no safe cigarette so don’t try smoking,” she added. (PIA/pdbanzon) [top]

On June 21, 2003, the Philippine Paramedical and Technical School of Davao, Inc. (PPTSDI) opened its doors to Davaoeños by offering a US-based Nursing Program.

It has registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) as a private proprietary educational institution. PPTSDI was first located at ESMAR Plaza Building corner Pichon – Magallanes Streets, Davao City.

Along with his colleagues here and abroad, PPTSDI was founded by Engr. Arturo A. Lacuesta, a Davaoeño, who has lived on the U.S. with his family for sometime, brought home the Nursing program particularly adapted from a formerly affiliated school, the California Paramedical and Technical School, headed by his colleague, Tino Abila in California. Now, PPTSDI has enhanced its Nursing program through the help of the Community College of Western Nevada and the Louisiana State Board of Nursing.

The pioneering class of the 15-month Vocational/Practical Nursing with 35-day class students and 15 night class students started its classes officially on July 1, 2003. Both classes were composed of students who came from different backgrounds and fields of professions with fresh high school graduates, college student shifters, college graduates and professionals including optometrists, dentists, and a medical doctor even.

The official launching of PPTSDI on June 21, 2003 was graced by TESDA local officials and friends and colleagues from local government officials.

By the first Foundation day of PPTSDI, the school’s student population increased. By then there were five classes. The Student Council organization was formed and paved the way to a more energetic celebration with sports fests, indoor games and a lot of socialization activities participated by the whole school including the Board of Directors.

By September 2004, the pioneering batch of 15-month Vocational/Practical Nursing Program graduated with no less than Gregory Howard, President of National Federation of Licensed Practical Nurses in US as the guest speaker.

By 2005, the student population increased. There were then six classes. The two-year ladderized Associate Degree in Nursing was offered particularly to Batch 6. The program allows the students to have an opportunity to earn two diplomas. If by the 15-month of their program they have earned their Vocational/Practical Nursing certificate and can qualify to challenge NCLEX-PN, they can continue to finish the two years of the program to earn their ADN-RN degree and qualify to challenge NCLEX-RN. A new program was launched in the same year. Surgical Technology which is in the process of accreditation with the Accreditation Review Committee on Education for Surgical Technology of the US (ARC-ST-US). PPTS is the first to offer this course in the whole of Asia. Soon, the school will launch another program, Ophthalmic Assistant.

By 2005 PPTS expanded to other cities in the country. In May 2006, PPTS-eAcademy in General Santos City and Medicus-PPTS in Iloilo City started operation and offered the two-year Ladderized AD-RN program.

The 2nd Foundation Day on June 21, 2005, celebrated with new surge of energy and enthusiasm was graced by no less than Ms. Fely Magdamo, a former member of the New York Board of Nursing.

On its 3rd anniversary, PPTSDI continues to develop programs that will cater to the needs of Filipino public to reach their dreams in having an opportunity to work abroad as healthcare professionals.

Today, June 21, 2006, PPTSDI will celebrate its 3rd Year Foundation Day with more vitality and perseverance to reach out to more cities nationwide.

Im really confused with this because what is "the Davao dialect"? Francisco Nemenzo does not even specify what is this language that he is talking about.

typical of the Davao Tagalog variant is the (excessive) use of Mag verbs (almost all verbs are inflected in this form) plus the assimilation of Cebuano particles like uy, gani, gyud... :) that's the syntactic side....on the semantic side...it's comprehensible to non-davao tagalog speakers

Davao really evolved culturally quite fast. The Spaniards established Catholicism here 158 years ago (http://funchain.com/post/0000002891). There is very little trace of Spanish in the Davaolog.

I remember when I was young that Dinabaw or Davaoeno of the Davao Oriental variety was spoken by many even in our largely Tagalog community (Caviteno and Batangueno) along the old Ponciano st.

Even I myself learned Cebuano/Bisaya only when I was in high-school (City High 1970-74). I believe Tagalog was dominant then especially in the market places (Bankerohan and the shops along San Pedro, Claveria and Uyanguren).

The martial law period saw the rise in internal migration in the country and this led to the influx of more Visayans to Davao (from Cebu, Bohol, Samar-Leyte, Panay-Negros).

The street language of Davao has shifted quite fast from Tagalog/Dinabaw to what Dodong Nemenzo may have refered to as the real Filipino language in Davao today - a combination Tagalog/Cebuano/English.

Try speaking Tagalog in Manila and they would surely notice the distinct Davao language. :)

Alsons Consolidated Resources is diversifying into mining with the acquisition of the rights and interest in the Manat Mining Claim from sister company Alsons Development and Investment Corporation (Aldevinco).

ACR corporate information officer Ireneo Gacad Jr. informed the Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) yesterday that the acquisition of the mining claim may be done directly or through a subsidiary.

"The valuation of the acquisition is to be determined by an independent third party which shall be subject to agreement by both parties," said Gacad.

Under the agreement, ACR will acquire all rights and obligations under the mineral production sharing agreement over the Manat Mining claims, subject to, among other things, the prior written approval of the secretary of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources.

"ACR is considering entering into the mining sector, which has been revived in recent years by the 1995 Mining Act, to develop a third major core business in lieu of construction materials," said Gacad.

He added that the firm’s two other major businesses are real estate and industrial park development as well as energy and power.

The Manat mining claims cover a total are of 1,547 hectares located in Nabunturan, Davao del Norte and Maco, Compostela Valley and are covered by an MPSA entered into by Aldevinco and the government.

Previous exploration work at the area identified three sub-parallel trending mineralized structures: Pagtulian, Katungbuan-Taglayag, and Magas.

Detailed work on the Magas vein zone has so far revealed an estimated resource of 2.7 million tons containing 2.8 grams per ton of gold, 26 grams per ton of silver, 22,500 tons of lead and 1.58 percent zinc.

The exploration work on the claims were carried out by Aldevinco in joint venture with a partner, organized under foreign laws and authorized to finance, explore, develop, operate mining projects in different parts of the world in exchange for an equity share in the property.

The JV partner has a technical and administrative services agreement with its affiliate to provide exploration personnel, equipment and support services.

"If and when the ownership claims is transferred to ACR as contemplated in the agreement between ACR and Aldevinco, ACR as successor-in-interest of Aldevinco expects its exploration program to continue with the JV partner," Gacad said.(JAL)

Mindanao is the place to go for those who want to venture into the vast food market because of its agricultural bounty but it needs to prop up its manufacturing capabilities and business linkages.

Joel Pascual, president of Premier Events Plus Group Incorporated, organizer of the Food Processing and Packaging Technology Expo, said they decided to give more priority to Mindanao after the World Food Expo in Manila, as Mindanao is the food basket of the country.

During the opening of the FPP Mindanao expo yesterday, Pascual said “Mindanao is abundant in raw materials from its ecosystem and we would like to serve as catalyst of development having this kind of expo where buyers and manufacturers meet."

The four-day exhibition showcases the latest products and technologies in the market and offers opportunities for Mindanao food producers, processors, manufacturers, and distributors to forge new business linkages.

"We are now bringing their purchasing requirement near to home together with the equipment for you to see and feel how it works to enhance your products," he said.

Pascual said many of the products in Mindanao are shipped to Manila for product processing enhancement.

"In this manner, more and more people will know that Mindanao is the place to go where raw materials can be found," he added and that the expo will help investors, suppliers, especially the small and medium enterprises in Mindanao to save money, effort, and time where they can canvass on the spot and talk to the purchasers and buyers who will be exhibiting in the expo.

The event offers opportunities to supply big food companies in Manila like Puregold, French Baker, Jollibee and others.

Pascual said that this could bring modern factories in Mindanao that will add value to the product through good processing and packaging.

The participating companies include suppliers of meat grinders, slaughtering lines, drum cutters, vacuum mixers, bread machines, injector, in line sterilizers, steamers, vertical and horizontal packaging machines, freezers, chillers, cake display, juice dispensers, coffee machineries and beans, silverware, glassware, cookware, buffet ware, cutleries, kitchen tools, gloves, boilers, spices and meat flavorings, pet bottles, ice makers and many others.

East Asian Growth Area Tourism Council head Mary Ann Montemayor opened the summit

Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan formally welcomed guests and participants while Department of Trade and Industry director Merly Cruz, Department of Agriculture regional director Roger Chio and Dept. of Science and Technology Regional Director Madel Moran-Morados gave their own messages.

Arch. Michael Angelo Dakudao acknowledged the guests and participants of the expo.

The exhibit is held at the Bangko Central here in Davao and will run until June 24, 2006.

By Manuel T. Cayon /MindaNews/ 20 December 2005

DAVAO CITY * -- The debt papers floated in the domestic market by the Development Bank of the Philippines appeared to hit the right timbre among local investors and businessmen, attracting a lot of subscription and showing that the local economy is one big capital market waiting to be tapped.

Early indicators show that the DBP could expect full subscription of the flotation of its "unsecured subordinated debt" instrument by the middle of this week, only a few days after it went on a road show beginning late last week.

The DBP intends to raise P10 billion in floating the capital notes to help finance development projects, many of them important infrastructure to help trigger further economic activity.

"I think we can expect full subscription of the capital notes we issued in only two days after our last road show here," said DBP Advisor Jaime Panganiban.

This city was the last leg of its sorties since last week, after Metro Manila on Wednesday; Cagayan de Oro City in Northern Mindanao, Iloilo City in Western Visayas and Pampanga in Central Luzon on Thursday, and Cebu City in Central Visayas and Baguio City in Northern Luzon on Friday.

The capital notes have a minimum denomination of P500,000, said Virgilio Chua, vice president of the Investment Banking Group of the First Metro Investment Corp., one of three arrangers and one of four market makers of the floated capital notes.

Panganiban said the four road shows, including the one held in Marco Polo Hotel here, indicated "enthusiasm and interest among the investors" for the debt papers. He said the attraction rested largely on the high yield of the notes aside from their being tax-exempt.
"You can sense their interest. They ask a lot of questions," he said. "After the conference, you would see many of them subscribing immediately, and of course, a lot of them hiding the amount that they would buy". The others would call our office to tell DBP executives that they were subscribing,

"We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm. The capital notes have very good reception," he said.

Investors usually buy treasury bills which, he said, on the average would yield “more than seven percent net".

"These capital notes, on the other hand, would yield between 9.38 to 9.88 percent. And these are tax-exempt," he said.

He added that these were attractive enough to the investors compared to the risk that the notes were not considered as deposits and were not secured by the Philippine Deposit Insurance Corp. "That means that investors or the buyers of our notes have to make a decision on a stand-alone basis, and based on the credit standing of the issuer," he said.

But with DBP "iba na ang nakasandal sa pader," alluding to its nature as a government financial institution.

The DBP is the fifth bank to issue debt instruments to raise additional or buffer capital fund but this is the first time for any government financial institutions to take to the local market to raise P10 billion as additional buffer to an already "very stable capital adequacy ratio (CAR)". The ratio was a ceiling set by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to ensure the adequate liquidity of the banks although Panganiban assured that the DBP has already doubled the CAR standard of 10 percent of its total liquidity.

The international financial community requires institutions to have eight percent "but for the DBP, we have 20 percent CAR".

"When we raise this P10 billion, we would even triple our CAR," said Jesus Guevarra II, executive vice president of DBP's marketing-branches sector. Panganiban said they included the Visayas and Mindanao area, despite statistics that shows the banks allotted only three percent of their total exposure to these two southern island groups.

"We know there's a lot of money here. When I worked once with a commercial bank, we easily raised P3 billion,” he said.

Fernando Lagahit, DBP Davao branch head, said projects lined up in the city for financing included the expansion of the Davao City Water District and the Davao Light and Power Co., the solid waste disposal project of the city government, a biogas project and other private and public projects, including the tourism development of the former Santa Ana wharf. Guevarra said DBP "has always been at the forefront of financing big projects, especially public infrastructure and developments of the rural areas".

He said DBP shouldered the construction of the P40-billion "nautical highway" of the Roll In, Roll Out (Roro) project, "where you can drive your car from Manila down to Dipolog in Western Mindanao".

Another project to be financed is the central nautical highway, connecting Perla, Sorsogon with island provinces of Masbate and to Cebu. "We are the funders of many projects of Transco (National Transmission Corp.), especially their 69 kilovolt lines, and hydroelectric power projects of other companies," he said.

"Commercial banks can only lend for a certain period of time, but at DBP, the loans have maturity of 15 years". DBP mainly draws its financial strength from the official development assistance (ODA) and deposits. "The (unsecured subordinated debts) issuance of these capital notes is the third instrument to raise more funds," Panganiban said. He said deposits have not dwindled despite the crisis but “even increased after the privatization of the Philippine National Bank."

"To raise the funds should not be construed as a sign of financial standing. In fact, we are the top performer among banks and financial institutions in terms of non-performing loans," Guevarra said. "We only have two percent, while many commercial banks have as high as 39 percent."

Collection is also not a problem, Panganiban said, "because we tap the LGUs which also immediately put their mechanisms in place to earn.”

Susan Prado, director and head of the debt finance-Philippines of The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corp Ltd (HSBC), said they would expect to earn about four percent in reinvesting the P10 billion to finance development projects.

Her company was also the arranger and market-maker of the capital notes of DBP. The other arranger, aside from FMIC and HSBC, was the Deutsche Bank. The selling agents were the three arrangers and the Multinational Investment Bank Corp and the Land Bank of the Philippines, said Martin Syquia, vice president of Deutsche Bank. Syquia said there were four market-makers; the HSBC, FMIC, LBP and the MNIBC.

Assn To Invest US$11.3 MLN For Cold Chain Facilities In Mindanao

DAVAO CITY, June 22 Asia Pulse - The Cold Chain Association of the Philippines, Inc. (CCAP) will invest P600 million (US$11.3 million) to build cold chain facilities in three key cities in Mindanao.

The project, according to CCAP president Anthony Dizon, is in line with the theme of the ongoing CCAP 4th Annual General Membership Meeting and Training Conference with the theme "Globalizing Mindanao-Building the Cold Chain Highway." Dizon said with the use of cold chain facilities, Mindanao vegetable producers stand to earn P60 billion from 200 million kilos of vegetables at P30 per kilo.

He noted CCAP is eyeing the cities of Davao, General Santos and Cagayan de Oro as target areas to build the cold chain facilities that will bolster the cold chain industry.

According to Dizon, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has committed to conduct a feasibility study of the project at its own expense.

CCAP got the support of USDA because the latter "has a soft spot for Mindanao as a potential agricultural area," he added.

While CCAP welcomes any assistance from the government, all the initiatives for Mindanao are all private sector-driven, Dizon said.

CCAP vice president Jose Lim Jr. of Jentec DC Corporation is also eyeing to pour additional investments for the proposed cold chain facilities in the cities of General Santos and Davao.

Dizon said the proposed cold chain facilities will be realized in the next 12 months.

By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

THE president of the Cold Chain Association of the Philippines (CCAP) said at least P600 million is to be invested in the cold chain industry in Mindanao in the next 12 months.

CCAP president Anthony S. Dizon, during the Club 888 press conference at the Marco Polo Hotel Wednesday, said there are already three proposed storage projects in Mindanao as of June 2006.

Cold chain is a series of process undertaken to protect the quality, integrity, and to sustain the value of perishable products as they are being transported from farm to markets.

"These investments are expected to take shape in the next 12 months in General Santos, Misamis Oriental and Davao City," Dizon said.

In Davao City, the Jentec Storage Inc., which already has three existing storage facilities in Pasig City, Calamba, Laguna, and Tarlac, will place its proposed cold storage project at barangay Ilang.

The project is expected to cost P400 million for two facilities, one for Davao City and the other at General Santos.

The RD Fishing Corporation, engaged in various ventures including fishing, agri-business, manufacturing, processing, banking and pawning, is planning to set up blast freezers and cold storage rooms in General Santos, which is expected to cost P400 million.

Meanwhile, in the Polar Bear Freezing and Cold Storage Corporation, which already has cold storage facilities in Pasig City and Davao City, is planning to set up two blast freezers and four cold storage areas with an estimated cost of P200 million.

CCAP vice-president Jose Lim Jr. said they are envisioning having a national cold chain network in the country where all major provinces and cities will have a post-harvest facility to protect their harvest.

"So all food products like meat, vegetables, or fruit will be processed in a clean and sanitary method and reduce incidents of food poisoning," Lim said during the same press conference.

Other than the sanitation aspect, Lim pointed out that using cold storage facilities can increase productivity as it lessens wastage.

"Based on statistics, using the facility can lessen wastage or loss by 30 percent," he said.

Mindanao-wide music TV show to be launched

Davao City (14 June) -- Here comes Muzika del Sur, a Davao-based half-hour cable television show that features the best of Mindanao’s music artistry, which will mark its maiden telecast on various cable channels in different Mindanao cities this June 15.

“It will showcase the vibrant Mindanao music scene like concerts, performances, features on Mindanao-born artists who made it big in the national scene, music videos of homegrown artists.” Said Dax Cañedo, executive producer of the show.

Cañedo said that it is high time that Mindanao particularly its music talent must be exposed to the public. Led by creative director Niño Flores of the Alchemy of Vision and Lights film and television productions, the show aims to be a groundbreaking aural and visual event in regional television with concepts aimed at highlighting the fiesta-like musical and artistic atmosphere in Mindanao.

“Sabi nila maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga cannon at mga baril na nagpuputukan, hindi totoo yan, maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga tugtog ng reggae, ska, rock, ethnic, hip-hop, acoustic, pop at iba pang musika na umaalingawngaw sa ating mga tenga, Nino Flores the show’s creative force said.

Proof of the pudding is the show’s first episode which features the Mix music fest held at the Wheels and More drive compound. The music fest organized by 105.9 Mix FM was graced by a total of 21 bands with performances that ranged from hardcore-rock to a Michael Buble-inspired pop-standard act.

Davaoena beauty Vanessa Yap and southern rocker Carlos Castaños hosts the show. Davao’s music show Durian jam will also be featured as a segment.

“This is a great show for Mindanao musicians, to be able to reach out to a wider audience. ”Said Wardy Puyod, bass guitarist of the Davaoeño rock band Lizard chips and co-producer of Durian Jam.

A Gensan band can be seen and heard in Cagayan de Oro and vice-versa, Davao bands who are so talented can now also be seen and heard across Mindanao added Puyod.

Mindanao’s particularly Davao has been feeling a musical renaissance of some sorts as local homegrown bands like Isla Era, Back by Midnite, Thavawenyoz and Sidecrash are attempting to invade the national music scene. A territory that have already been conquered by the likes of Joey Ayala, Free Style, South Border and Wardy Puyod’s high school classmate Juris Fernandez of the chart-topping MYMP.

“The musical dynamism here in Mindanao is the reason why we have produced this show.” said Cañedo.

The show will be shown every Thursady 10 pm, Saturdays and Tuesdays every 10:30 p.m. The show will be aired on Skycable Davao channel 28,Tagum channel 15, Zamboanga channel 15, General Santos channel 17, Home Channel Network 35, Digos Cable channel 11 and Parasat Cagayan de Oro channel 24.

Reggae rock from Isla Era

SOUNDS FAMILIAR By Baby A. Gil
The Philippine Star 06/23/2006

There is a lot of buzz going around about the growing popularity of reggaeton, which is predicted to be the next big thing in dance music. This is a combination of reggae with Latin, pop, rap and hip-hop and whatever other forms the artist desires. It is said to have originated from Central America and is distinct from the quasi reggae or hip-hop music done by artists from other countries. For example, those are merely Koreans rapping in Korean or Latinos doing reggae. Not very original.

Reggaeton is different though, because it evolved naturally from the basic music forms and easily adapts itself to other influences. This enables musicians from all over the world to take it and make it their own without ending up as poor copies of the originals. Truth to tell, there are now reggaeton artists in the US, Europe, Japan, Singapore and even the Philippines. In fact, I believe that the multi-faceted but reggae-based music of Brownman Revival is reggaeton. Likewise that of the exciting new group Isla Era. This is not as danceable but is also a fluid mix of reggae with other types of music.

Isla Era comes from Davao and is made up of Romeo Catedrilla on lead vocals, Dencio Cebellos, who I must say plays a mean guitar, Marcus Resma on bass and Toto Sumagaysay on drums. They started out playing covers of foreign rock tunes but soon began to experiment with their own songs. Out of these efforts arose a blend of reggae, rock, pop and interestingly also native Filipino music. Strange mix, you say? Not at all. This is because the songs of Isla Era have that most basic ingredient required by reggaeton. The music has to happen naturally. And it does.

Check this out in Barkada Ko, the debut album that took Isla Era out of Davao into the music mainstream of Metro Manila. The title track is also the first single release. It is one of the group’s original compositions and extols the friendship they have developed after lots of years together in the band. The other new works also take on universal themes like love of country and family and friends, plain having fun and falling in love. These are the anthemic future classic Aking Ama (Super Ama), Makuntento, Kayumanggi, Hangin, Bughaw Pula’t Dilaw, Bayan Ko, Azucena and Gusto Kita Pero Di Kita Mahal, which I believe should make a very strong second single.

Classic Pinoy rock and pop songs done the Isla Era way also make an appearance in the album. While commendable because those songs should not be forgotten and can certainly use new, preferably innovative versions, not all of their choices work well with the band’s style. This is true of Maria Capra’s Kumusta Mga Kaibigan and of Rey Valera’s Ako si Superman which stick out like sore thumbs in the line-up. The Apo Hiking Society’s Mahirap Magmahal ng Syota ng Iba comes off very well though and gives the album a good ending.

Kadayawan causes better regard for IPs

By Rizalene P. Acac

THE acceptance and recognition of the culture and tradition of the indigenous people living in the hinterlands of the city could be attributed to the annual Kadayawan Festival.
Oscar Casaysay, head of the City Tourism Office, said the event educated the lowlanders on the heritage of the cultural minorities.

“Kadayawan created a dent in the way we think about the Lumads. The non-Lumads now recognize that they are existent,” he said.
He said people now have a high regard for indigenous people who were only seen before as paupers and beggars.

Casaysay also added that Davaoeños are also proud of the Lumads that they wear their costumes and accessories.

“We could see famous personalities wearing beads or people who use tinalak in their homes,” he said.

He also said that indigenous people are also accepted globally as evidenced by the adoption of their concepts in fashion shows in Paris and New York.

Casaysay said the 21st Kadayawan Festival this year, would be another grand celebration of the Davao and Mindanao’s ethnicity.

The event will be on August 14-20 which would showcase the famous Indak-indak sa Kadalanan, float parade, Urog Etnika Fashion show, Hiyas ng Kadayawan and Huraw (Horse Fighting) among others.

Hi Rajah!!:)

I looked at this thread... is it a fight about the languages tagalog and ceubano??? I do not understand that what is written in this specific thread in another language than english. But understood the same word can have two completley different meanings in these two languages, like the word libog as one forumer in that thread has as an example. I think what might happen if in an area were you use it thinking it is a ceubano district, but it happens to be a tagalog one....hahaha I dare not think about what troubles I might end up in visiting the Philippines trying to talk the little ceubano I know....and that maybe in the wrong area or company. We learn as long as we live:) It is interesting to peak into this language discussion, it seems to stir up alot of emotions and protests....:). Is tagalog the official language of the whole Philippines I have understood that there are many languages in the country and that Davao speaks it´s own dialect/language? To me this is very interesting.

Tomorrow Rajah is the big match....:cheer: Sweden "heja heja heja Sverige" of course I cheer for my own country, but still is Brazil my favorite so far and yesterday 1-4 to Brazil...was very exciting and Japan did play good too...and in the end it is only a game and I kind of hope everybody would win hahaha am such an unrealistic idealistic person..hahaha

Yosi Kadiri

THERE'S a billboard at the intersection of J. P. Laurel Avenue and the Buhangin Flyover that asks motorists plying the route "So you think smoking is cool?" It then proceeds to illustrate the effects of tobacco smoke once absorbed by the body. The cab rides I take are normally fast at that junction, and so I never got to see beyond "bad breath" as one of the consequences of smoking. Never mind, though. Reflecting on the contents of that billboard has recently been enough to stop me from giving in to nicotine cravings ever since I decided to quit.

I started smoking at the tender age of sixteen, as a Molecular Biology major in UP Diliman. Promdi that I was, I was in awe of the upper classmen who seemed the epitome of cool -- the girls with shaved heads holding hands with their long-haired boyfriends, each with a cigarette in hand.

I lighted a stick to satisfy my curiosity, desperately wanting to be as hip as the students I wanted to emulate. The first puff I took immediately made me feel noxious, and anybody in his right mind should have realized that that was not a good sign. Nah, not me; I wanted to immerse myself in the ambience of ultimate freedom at the state university. And so I bravely, and quite perversely, trained myself to puff away at the road to popularity; I learned how to blow perfect smoke rings and the most sophisticated way to hold a Marlboro.

I have been a smoker for thirteen years, and I am not proud of it now. While I blended perfectly with the Malate artsy crowd and became one of the shaven girls in school with a cigarette between the fingertips, and while those moments symbolized that I was living my life with youthful abandon, I had to reconcile myself to the fact that as people grow older, they should also become wiser. Simply put, I matured. And I had done enough with my life to realize that my motivation for picking up the habit in the first place -- to be cool -- just seems so stupid. What was I thinking?

Of course, it's not as simple as it sounds. That government warning is true: cigarette smoking is really addictive. The fact that it is an addiction is something that one should seriously ponder on before lighting another stick. Fighting that addiction gives a new dimension to the saying that the mind is willing but the flesh is weak. Who will win: the cravings or willpower? I'm a proud person, and I'd like to think that I am stronger than this.

And so, I would like to dedicate this piece to the people at the Davao City Health Office and the other entities responsible for putting up that billboard on a busy highway. Thank you for reminding me that I have been willfully and consciously ingesting poison for the past thirteen years.

Thank you to the members of the City Council for enacting that landmark piece of legislation that makes erstwhile smokers like me realize that when I go beyond the boundaries of my abode, I can only indulge in my habit when I am ultimately considerate of the people around me.

Thank you to the mayor, who went beyond the delivery of basic social services and took one step further in improving the health and welfare of his constituents by tackling, head-on, the issue of smoking and coming up with concrete moves to make the concept a doable, practical and sustainable reality. No other local chief executive can boast of that kind of concern.

After more than a decade, I have seen the light. And that light is not found at the tip of a cigarette.

Russian airline set to establish routes in South

The Philippine Star 06/24/2006

Mindanao’s airline and tourism industry takes another big leap as a Filipino-Russian-owned airline company, Mosphil Aero Inc., gears up in establishing new direct flights to the Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines-East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and the Republic of Palau.

Mosphil Aero Inc. president Ibragim Sharifkulov said the airline company is putting up international and domestic flights that will primarily service passenger and cargo traffic in the region.

"Our expansion in Mindanao is part of the company’s mission to provide air travel and cargo services to potential tourist destinations in the Philippines needing reliable means of transportation," he said.

Sharifkulov identified Zamboanga, Jolo, Tawi-Tawi and Davao as key areas being targeted by Mosphil Aero in Mindanao.

Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process Jesus Dureza said establishing more domestic and international air links is vital in accelerating economic activities and promoting tourism in the entire Mindanao.

"Mindanao is a strategic place for airline investments due to the increasing number of domestic and foreign tourists and investors along with the existing BIMP-EAGA economic cooperation," he said.

Dureza said the government and the business sector are working closely to promote flights within the four member-countries of the BIMP-EAGA.

At present, the BIMP-EAGA roadmap to development aims to increase trade, investment and tourism in the sub-regional cooperation within five years.

Specifically, by 2010, the BIMP-EAGA roadmap is poised to increase intra and extra trade among BIMP-EAGA focus areas by 10 percent, investments by 10 percent, and tourism movement by 20 percent.

The BIMP-EAGA was created in March 1994 to increase trade, tourism and investments among the member-countries of the growth polygon with Mindanao and Palawan among the key focus areas for cooperation.

Garbage collectors to be educated on segregation
By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

DAVAO City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said he will call the attention of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office (Cenro) on the segregation of garbage.

Reports have it that there are some Cenro garbage collectors who do not segregate when collecting garbage, but instead they mix biodegradable and non-biodegradable in the compactor trucks.

Avisado said Thursday segregation of garbage at the source or at homes becomes useless if they are not segregated at the compactor trucks.

He said there might be a need to educate not only the public but as well as Cenro garbage collectors.

"It is very obvious that garbage bins are labeled biodegradable and non-biodegradable. Maybe garbage collectors also need to be educated," Avisado said.

Avisado also told Dabawenyos to bring out their garbage only during scheduled collection days.

"If the people will only bring out their garbage on the scheduled collection day, the Cenro will not collect garbage that are not supposed to be collected on that day thus, prevent mixing of the biodegradable and non-biodegradable at the compactor trucks," he said.

Avisado also encourage the public to recycle those recyclable materials to lessen generation of garbage.

"The plastic, if they could still be used, do not throw it," he said.

A pre-Kadayawan fashion special

TONI Galang, one of the few internationally recognized Filipino Fashion Designer, breezed into Davao City over the weekend, in preparation for his much-awaited fashion show to be held tomorrow at Marco Polo Hotel, Davao City.

Toni is the first Filipino designer to receive the United States Congressional Award for promoting the Philippines through his fashion collection. His much sought after Filipiniana creations more than give that elegant and lovely Filipino appeal, but it also supports and endorses the use of indigenous materials. His unique way of incorporating the Philippine heritage in his creations earned admiration and respect here and abroad.

This year, the opportunity to applaud Toni Galang for his masterful work is happening in Davao City. He is presenting his collections in an "INVITES ONLY" event at the Grand Ballroom of the Marco Polo Davao Tuesday.

Top models Patty Betita and Marina Benipayo with male model Ariel Atendido will grace the affair. Featured also are some of Davao families most beautiful faces, including current Mutya ng Davao, Johanna Guirgen plus fifteen of Davao City's professional models.

Dubbed Toni Galang 2006, the fashion show will be orchestrated by the much sought after fashion director Raymond Villanueva, the personalities will be walking the runway clad in Galang's collection of 75 pieces, the finale of which will be a bridal ensemble, tagged as the Champagne Collection.

Robinsons Land public offering may be deferred
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
The Philippine Star 06/26/2006

The planned public offering of Robinsons Land Corp., scheduled this year, may be moved to next year depending on market conditions, according to a top company official.

"Hopefully, we can do it (the offering) this year but it would all depend on market conditions," said RLC president Lance Gokongwei.

Gokongwei said RLC has already filed a registration statement with the Securities and Exchange Commission, covering the sale of up to 932 million million shares to both local and international institutional investors.

The public offering, scheduled in June or July this year, aimed at boosting trading liquidity. It is expected to raise about $220 million in proceeds.

RLC said the shares will be sold at a price to be computed on the basis of the volume weighted average trading price of the common shares for the 10 trading days immediately preceding the pricing date of said offering, subject to a discount of up to 10 percent.

The Gokongwei group wants to raise RLC’s minimum public float to as much as 40 percent from the current seven percent.

Macquarie Securities (Asia) Pte. Ltd was tapped as financial adviser for the offering.

Parent company JG Summit holds 74 percent of RLC, which operates shopping malls and develops high-rise residential and office condominiums and residential communities. About 19 percent of the property concern is held by URC.

RLC has set aside P7 billion this year for the development of new malls, office buildings for business process outsourcing firms, residential projects, and landbanking activities.

Bulk of the programmed capital budget or about P3.5 billion will go to the construction of residential and office buildings while P2 billion has been set aside for acquisition of properties for future development.

Funding will come from internally generated cash, the planned share offering, and possibly new borrowings.

RLC is building seven new malls in Davao, Tagaytay, Dumaguete, Sucat, Manila, Pangasinan, and General Santos. These new malls, he said, are expected to be completed next year or in 2008.

The company is also completing the redevelopment of a portion of Robinsons Galleria mall to be called West Wing, and Robinsons Ermita.

RLC remains focused on the lucrative middle-market residential housing as it aims to launch at least three projects this year including East of Galleria, a high-rise residential condominium located in Ortigas business district.

As for its office buildings, RLC expects to complete the construction of Robinsons Cybergate Center Tower 2, an office building complex designed for call centers and BPO firms.

As for the housing segment, RLC intends to focus on the middle-income market for lots with options for housing priced at a range of P600,000 to P2 million.

RLC is stepping up efforts to acquire properties via joint venture in key cities where there is big potential for mid-market real estate property sales and it will aggressively tap the overseas Filipino workers market in Europe and in the Middle East.

Pop’s is BACK!
Article by: Niko G. Villegas
Photos by: Niko G. Villegas

Pop’s resto bar began its humble beginning at Ilustre St. and had it’s ups and downs but eventually stayed afloat despite adversity. Time passed by and the loyal citizens of Pop’s also grew in number and now the old Pop’s at Ilustre could no longer handle the larger crowd. March 15 came and it was time for Pop’s to move on. A time for bigger things, a bigger place and now found its way to Wheels and More Drive (Bajada, Davao CIty).

April came and with a bigger and better place, Pop’s is now back to welcome all the citizens and even brought in a new resident DJ that goes by the name of CUMA.

No more words, no more nonsense, well just let the pictures tell you the story . . .

Your welcome boss...well, I dont know much in Daval Del Sur...the only place that you can see serries of 7 falls in one climb i know is in Compostela Valley...

Neway, as you wish...here are photos of ALIWAGWAG FALLS courtesy of Sleepwalker(find in his previous post)

It is a towering beauty located in the middle of the forest at
Barangay Aliwagwag, Cateel, Davao Oriental, a series of 84
waterfalls appearing like a stairway to the sky.
Considered by hydraulic engineers as the country's highest
and among Mindanao's most beautiful waterfalls, the
Davao Oriental Provincial Tourism is hell-bent on promoting it.
