Delighting you always
Canon Philippines opens its
newest sales and service center
Mindanao Daily Mirror
June 30, 2008
BY MAYA M. PADILLO
True to its commitment of “delighting customers always,” Canon Philippines has relocated its sales and service center in Davao City to a bigger building that will provide total customer services.
Costing more than P3 million, the newest hub opened on June 24 in Lanang fronting the Davao City Water District.
The new building houses a showroom of the latest Canon products, customer care center, repair room, and sales.
Total repair services will be given, from copier to fax machine, scanners, and even cameras.
“Canon camera users in Davao no longer need to go to Manila for repair. This is one of our ways of delighting customers,” said Canon Marketing Philippines president and CEO Ramon Arteficio.
Canon Philippines is one of the fastest growing Asian subsidiaries of Canon. Ranking 484th among the Top 7,000 corporations and 68th in the Top 500 IT companies, Canon is a world-renowned camera maker and is now a global multimedia corporation which continues to improve.
The company has a wide array of inputs and outputs and total imaging solutions for personal, home, and business uses.
Arteficio said the new center will also showcase Canon’s latest products like 450D SLR digital cameras and printers.
“For many years of being present in Davao, this is our way of delighting you always not only with quality products. We also want to be known as number one in service,” Arteficio said.

rises in 2nd district
Mindanao Daily Mirror
June 30, 2008
Dressed in media attire, a group of mediamen visited farflung barangays in Ilang, Bunawan, Tibungco, Buhangin, Mandug, Dumanlas, Cabantian and Sasa to see for themselves the ongoing schoolbuilding construction in the second district.
A 3-storey school-building, one of its kind ever constructed in Davao City costing P14,342,000 at F. Bangoy NHS Barangay Sasa is ongoing construction and is scheduled for completion by July this year.
FBangoy NHS principal, Anastacia Armigos in Sasa said the 3-storey building with 12 classrooms and complete comfort room facilities will solve the shifting of classes among students by August funded under the Congressional funds of Davao City second representative Vincent Garcia.
In an inspection made by Congressman Garcia, Principal Armigos said he (Garcia) has personally observed the overshooting number of students in one classroom. But with the completion of the 3-storey building by July, we can have a regular class of 60 students, she said.
In Lasang, PTA president Raul Joven of Al Navarro NHS said that Congressman Garcia immediately adhered to the PTCA requests for additional classrooms. “Kahit anong galing ng teacher, kapag masyadong marami ang estudyante sa isang klase, hindi pa rin makakamit ang kuwalidad ng edukasyon,” Joven said. But Congressman Garcia committed to add more classrooms every year and sees to it that by the end of his term (2010) he will complete all projects especially those initiated by his father (Nonoy Garcia), he said.
In Bunawan, Felipe Calderon ES OIC Secretary Repato said a 2-storey schoolbuilding was just inaugurated last June 23 funded by Congressman Garcia. Another school-building is ongoing its construction and is scheduled for completion. We are now occupying the newly constructed building, she said.
In Ilang, Sixto Babao ES OIC Leo Espedido said a 2-storey building has just been completed and is now being used by the students. On top of the additional classrooms, Congressman Garcia have helped a lot in our demolition problem and lack of electricity, he said.
In Dumanlas, ES principal Lilia Tibug said that aside from the additional classrooms provided by the Congressman, we now have a Home Economics building and a Knowledge Channel. Our students are now more comfortable, she said.
In Buhangin, Central ES principal Arturo dela Cruz said that we are the recipient of another 2-storey school-building that was completed just last March this year. Congressman Garcia has committed to construct another schoolbuilding to replace the old and dilapidated Marcos-type building that was built in 1960’s, he said. PTCA president Victor Andico have expressed his gratitude for the additional building that is expected to be finished by November.
In another development, Congressman Garcia said that Education Secretary Jesli Lapus has also contributed a lot in the construction of additional classrooms in district 2. He personally requested to fund the classrooms from Secretary Lapus adding that Secretary Lapus “never refused my request for the benefit of the students. PIA/rbpalacio

looks to me like there were more passengers going to davao than back and so i was thinking the return flight carries passengers whos purpose is more on doing business in manado which doesnt come on a regular basis i guess and not many of them. and so if there are other options to come to indonesia, it would be travel and tour to denpasar and jakarta and can also be a layover destinatin for a connecting flight to another country like it is with silkair and singapore city from davao city.

Making good from the start
By Gigie A. Agtay
THERE are many winners in every aspect of life and every field of endeavor.
Winners stand as role models to people who are trying to wrestle with defeat. Obviously, Dabawenya Rochelle and Italian husband Romano Venuti are not made for defeat. Their three businesses - Prego Caf‚ Picobello and Swiss Deli Gourmet have survived the test of times.
Prego Caf‚ at the 3rd floor of GS Citimall, is a sole proprietorship of Rochelle and Romano while Picobello (at the 3rd foor of the same mall) and Swiss Deli (in Bajada) is shared with Romano's Italian-Swiss friend Marcus Kehl.
Prego opened in 2000, five years after Rochelle and Romano moved to Davao from Manila.
"We met in Indonesia working in the same hotel -- Bali Hyatt. He decided to leave the hotel business as pastry chef and work in the Philippines. After a while he ventured into consultancy," Rochelle said.
Romano joined the then JS Gaisano in 1995 when they put up Living Bread and Caf‚ Ilustrado.
Prego shop came about after his stint with JS Gaisano.
A year after, Picobello was opened in November 2001.
"Romano, for the longest time had wanted to open an Italian resto, and it so happen we're also into the sausage making business," Rochelle said. "There was a Swiss company before so accessible kami sa supplies. So we saw a good opportunity of opening an Italian rest. Before, Salvatore palang ang Italian resto na open."
Four years after on Sept 8, 2005, Swiss Deli was opened.
"Business was a roller coaster though. Some years na good business pero hindi consistent. May lean months. It's the hands on management that keeps it going. We are here every single day. Romano and Marcus take turns in being at Picobello and Swiss Deli everyday in monitoring the quality, service and kung ano kulang sa kitchen," she said.
She said they try to "standardize business operations para kung meron man isang mawala, hindi mapaparalze."
For Picobello, Rochelle attributes the lean times to summer when students have no classes and some people are out of town for vacation.
"There are students who are very aggresive to spend like those from Ateneo, Davao Doc and mga kids ng well-off families pero limited. The A clientele like mga expats don't mind about the price. The market of Swiss Deli are the upper working class. If you notice lunchtime mga corporate people ang customers. After one hour, mawawala sila because they would have to go back to work."
Picobello's "Buy 1 take 1" promo on pizza was meant to offset the lean hours, in the beginning.
"In a mall di pwede mag close after lunch. Nandyan naman ang staff so we thought of maximizing para may tao pa din kahit lean hours. We just give the pizza at cost. Malakas among students and medical representatives," she said.
Ingredients, she added, are locally sourced. "May sarili kaming production ng cold cuts at a plant beside Swiss Deli.
Malaki ang volume of production because we supply most establishments in Visayas and Mindanao. We have a distributor in Manila," she added.
Rochelle said the sausage making business came about because Marcus is a genuine butcher himself.
The plant was opened in 2003.
Rochelle said that for Picobello, there have been requests for franchising. "Were starting to consider, in that way yung ingredients kami pa din mag-supply."
Pico pizza is freshly made. "The moment you order dun lang ginagawa ang crust. For one pizza, it will take less than 10 minutes. Matagal pa nga yun. We prepare the dough. The taste is closest to the authentic. No modifications. It's also one way of educating the market. It is very important that quality is maintained as well as giving employees incentives," she said.
Prego is one of the pioneer coffee shops in Davao aside from Basti's Brew and Blugre.
"One of the reasons why people keep coming back to Prego is me," Rochelle jokes. "But seriously, I personally sit down with them. They become my friends. Aside from the coffee that always tastes the same."
Rochelle is not open to the idea of branching out though. "If my coffee shop is
doing well bakit hanapan ko pa ng sariling kumpetensya. With the many coffee shops around, its irrelevant to compete," she said.
All that goes well for couple Rochelle and Romano Venuti who proved that putting their hearts and minds into their business has been a key to maintaining a good standing in the industry.
The Venuti couple is also parents to three children -- 19-year-old Sergio, a 3rd aeronautical engineering student; 16-year-old Domenico, and Cassandra, 7.
Prego Caf‚ is open from 10 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.; Picobello -- 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. with telephone no. 221-1692 while Swiss Deli is open from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. with telephone number 234-0271.

dinabaw June 30th, 2008, 07:21 AM UP Min Torch Night ’08
ON TORCH Night, upperclassmen from all blocs, colleges, and courses at the University of the Philippines-Mindanao campus merge elements of college life (like fun and humiliation) and congregate to give freshies a taste of the spotlight.
This annual event is organized by the University Student Council (USC) in cooperation with different organizations from the campus.
Through the sophomore bloc heads, the upperclassmen pass on to the freshies the responsibilities of being Iskolars ng Bayan by passing the flames a la Olympics through torches, from one generation to another, so to speak.
The culminating event no doubt was the performance time: each bloc is obliged to perform practically anything (dance, skit, song and/or band numbers) to represent their course, amid cheers and boos (it happens), calls of “Uwian na,” to a jaded audience of hundreds who, having seen everything through the years, have become hard to please.
This year, one judge from each course formed a panel reminiscent of the US television show American Idol, judging the performance with a college grade, flat 1 being the highest and 5 the lowest.
At the end of the night, the freshies from BS Applied Mathematics walked away with bragging rights, providing the upper class with a lot of highlights to talk about for weeks to come. As for the, uhm, win-deprived courses, you can try again next year.
Although there’s always Freshmen Night but that’s another story.
Note:
UPMin’s University Student Council (USC) organizes this event for the freshies in behalf of all upperclassmen, the event is an off-shoot of what used to be called “Bonfire.”
At a time when campus student population was less than a hundred, upper and freshmen gathered around a real bonfire at the start of every academic year and forget their stress of homework and terror professors to have fun.

Councilor joins call for bicycle lanes
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao
COUNCILOR Peter Laviña is set to propose a resolution Tuesday that will pave the way for an ordinance to promote the use of bicycles as an alternative means of transportation in Davao City.
In an e-mailed copy of the resolution, Laviña cited the high cost of gasoline for motor vehicles and its ill effects on the environment, such as pollution and climate change, as reason for the proposal.
"There is a need to promote the use of environment-friendly mode of transportation and bicycles present as the most viable, affordable, and safe alternative," Laviña said.
He added that in promoting and encouraging the use of bicycles, incentives and other amenities would be provided for the users.
Among the incentives cited in the proposed ordinance are: exemption from payment of mayor's business permit fees for all bicycle manufacturers, distributors and retailers, and repair shops; exemption from payment of registration fees for bicycle owners; provision of interest-free or low-interest loans for the purchase of bicycles; provision of bicycle parking slots or parking lots for all public buildings and facilities and commercial establishments such as offices, factories, stores, hotels, restaurants, schools, hospitals, malls, among others; provision of bicycle space ahead of any four or more-wheel vehicles at traffic intersections; provision of appropriate traffic signage for the respect for cyclists; and provision of bicycle lanes (separate ordinance).
Councilor Leonardo Avila III, chair of the committee on environment, has already initiated a study in July last year as basis for the provision of bicycle lanes.
The survey, prepared by the Support Services and Coordinative Section of the City Administrator's office, was made in the areas of Quezon-Boulevard-Roxas Avenue, Magsaysay Avenue, Agdao Flyocer-Leon Garcia Streets, Quimpo Boulevard-Bolton Bridge, R. Castillo-Sasa, Lanang Junction, McArthur Highway Junction and Quimpo Boulevard Junction.
It showed that there are two to three bikers passing through the city's main streets in a single minute.
Avila said these statistics would strongly prove the need to establish bike lanes in the city's main thoroughfares to protect the bikers.
The ordinance establishing bike lanes passed on first reading during the City Council's regular session in July 2007 and was referred to the committee on energy, transportation, and communication chaired by Councilor Pilar Braga.
The proposal to establish bike lanes, however, is not a new move as Mayor Rodrigo Duterte already issued Executive Order 21 back in 2005, creating the technical working group (TWG) that will tackle and draft the bicycle lane ordinance. The survey cited by Avila is part of the output of the TWG.
The ordinance will provide for the establishment of lanes in highways and signage in small roads would be an integral part of the Traffic Management System.
Provisions of the bike lanes ordinance crafted in January 2008 classified the lanes into three.
The first lane is classified as "for common use."
Avila said these are in areas like the city's main streets where it is impossible to establish a separate bike lane.
"What we plan to do in places like San Pedro Street is to identify a speed limit in a particular lane to make it safe for bikers," Avila said in January.
The second classification is the "priority path". Avila said this lane is where cars can also pass through but are expected to "respect" bikers.
"The rule here is to 'yield to bikes.' Pwedeng daanan ng mga vehicles pero kung maraming bikers, sila talaga ang priority," Avila said.
The last classification is the designated bike lane, which according to Avila needs a longer time to implement.
"The city can implement the first two immediately kasi madali lang yun through the help of the Traffic Management Center," Avila said.
In Laviña's proposal, on the other hand, bicycle users through the association of cyclists in the city will be part of the Local Special Bodies, such as the Traffic Management Coordinating Board and the City Development Council, among others, to help study proposals and programs for the implementation of bike lanes.

Pancake House allots P70M for new stores
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña

The Philippine Star
The Lorenzo-owned restaurant chain Pancake House Inc. is setting aside P70 million this year for the continued expansion of its store network as it seeks to further boost income more than 50 percent by the end of 2008.
At the sidelines of the company’s stockholders’ meeting yesterday, Pancake House chairman and president Martin Lorenzo said the group is looking at building 23 to 25 stores for the year, about a third of which will be company owned while the rest will be franchised. Last year, it opened 20 new stores, bringing its total branch network to 138 as of end 2007.
Aside from its flagship Pancake House, the group also owns and operates Dencio’s, which specializes in Filipino grilled menu items; Teriyaki Boy, which offers Japanese cuisine; Singkit, which specializes in Chinese food for delivery; Sizzlin’ Pepper Steak; and its recently-acquired Le Coeur De France, a chain of French bakery shops.
But Lorenzo said the company is putting its planned acquisitions on hold this year amid the prevailing difficult business environment. “I don’t think now is the right time to acquire. We want to focus on further growing our existing businesses,” he said.
Nevertheless, Lorenzo expressed confidence the group can sustain its net income and sales growth this year with net earnings seen rising to nearly P100 million compared from P63 million in 2007, driven by new store openings.
Sales are likewise forecast to grow from P1.8 billion to P2.1 billion while system-wide sales are seen to increase as much as 24 percent to P2.6 billion.
From the 73 outlets as of end-2007, Pancake House is planning to expand its store network to 82 by yearend and is looking at other key cities and provinces like Bulacan, Baguio, Subic, Tagaytay, Laguna, Cagayan de Oro, Cebu and Davao.
Pancake House also intends to further beef up its presence overseas following the successful launch of its first branch in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Plans are underway for the opening of three more outlets before the company opens for franchising to several interested parties.
For its Filipino-owned grill unit, Dencio’s intends to expand its branches to 35 from the existing 26 in the next two years.
Teriyaki Boy, currently the leading Japanese brand in the casual dining industry in the country, will expand its restaurant operations to 39 stores by end-2008 from 34 as of last year.

MANILA, Philippines--Davao City is considering the conversion of all of its business permit and license application forms into electronic Portable Document Format (PDF) files, an initiative that could help save the city at least P1.4 million every year, according to the project's proponent.
Ted Padova, chief executive of Davao City-based Apo Visions Inc., said his company has a pending proposal before the city's information and communications technology council.
The proposed system makes available all permit and licensing application and renewal forms as PDF files that can be downloaded and viewed by Davao residents using the free Adobe Acrobat reader software.
"This will save the city P1.4 million in printing forms alone for around 35,000 business owners every year," Padova said in an interview with INQUIRER.net.
Padova delivered a presentation during last Friday's National ICT month celebration at the Commission on Information And Communications Technology (CICT) headquarters on the Diliman campus of the University of the Philippines.
The project's proposed budget is P22 million, one fourth of which will be spent on hardware (including a server for the scanned and digitized forms) and the rest for assisting and training government workers on how to use the system, Padova said.
By converting forms into PDF files, businesses especially "sari-sari" (small mom-and-pop grocery) stores in far-flung areas can save time and money by downloading the forms, filling them up and then sending them back online.
"This would address bottlenecks in the city offices especially during January when workers sometimes need to stay past midnight because of the huge volume of applications," Padova said.
Internet cafes would be employed to make forms available for Davao residents that do not have their own connections to the Internet, he added.

henji July 1st, 2008, 12:05 AM Davao water utility to proceed with project
Tuesday, July 1, 2008 | MANILA, PHILIPPINES
Business World Onlin
DAVAO CITY — The Davao City Water District (DCWD) will proceed with its P1.3-billion pipe-laying project in Tamugan River and will oppose a plan of an Aboitiz unit to build a power plant there.
Rodora N. Gamboa, general manager of the water utility, said the water project would address the needs of some 30,000 families who have no access to clean water.
The government-owned utility has objected to a plan by Aboitiz unit Hedcor, Inc. to build a P6-billion, 34.5-megawatt hydroelectric plant at the river, one of four plants it is seeking to build in the region.
Since its creation in 1973, the DCWD has been the biggest water district in the Philippines, now having more than 140,000 service connections.
Hedcor officials have said the project is environment-friendly and would avert a power crisis set to hit the Davao Region within the next two years.
Hedcor President Rene B. Ronquillo said it would be better for the DCWD to tap into the hydroelectric plant pipeline since the quality of the water would be better.
But Ms. Gamboa said the utility would not surrender its authority over the area, noting that under the Provincial Water Utilities Act of 1973, in case of a dispute, priority is always given to water over power.
The DCWD obtained the permit for the project in 1997, while the Aboitiz unit is still applying for a permit.
"Unless they shoulder our operational expenses, as well as the additional expenses that we will incur in building the project, there is no agreement in sight," she pointed out.
She added that allowing Hedcor to set up a hydroelectric plant in the area would defeat its goal of cutting its electricity costs since the water plant would be run by gravitational force.
At present, the water utility spends about P211 million annually for power.
That could balloon to P314 million in the next five years due mainly to new connections and based on present power rates.
Ms. Gamboa said the project, estimated to generate 200,000 metric tons of water a day, would not require power since the river will go to a treatment plant through gravitational force.
But if Hedcor is allowed to build its hydroelectric power plant, the water will have to be diverted, forcing the DCWD to spend more for its project, she added.
She also said the project would tap surface water. At present, the utility is tapping 99% ground water for its service areas. Carmelito Q. Francisco

despite recovery efforts
BY JUDY QUIROS
Mindanao Daily Mirror
The mining industry in Davao Region continues to face sluggish growth despite the passage of the Philippine Mining Act and the creation of the National Policy Action Plan by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
Speaking at yesterday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw at Café Rysus SM City Davao, Mines Geosciences Bureau regional technical director Edilberto Arreza said mining investments are being blocked by the tedious process of applying for mining permit and the practice of some applicants of sitting on their mining application for over two years.
Arreza said there are only two existing mining firms fully operating in Region 11, namely Apex Mining and Holcim Cement.
He said there are 34 mining projects up for the Davao Region. Of the number, four are under exploration stage: Diwalwal Mining operations, North Davao Mining, King King Copper operation, and Pujada Nickel project.
These four mining projects are projected to generate P1.7 billion income, Arreza said.
He said government support should be beefed up to improve the mining industry.
Also needed are a strengthened revitalization policy as well as a new permitting scheme, he said.
For his part, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) chair Virgilio Leyretana said the private sector, particularly the mining stakeholders, and government should pull their acts together to boost the mining industry.
He also said the commitment of mining investors to adopt responsible mining and equal profit sharing to maintain the industry’ sustainability can pull up the mining industry.
The problems hounding the mining industry and possible mechanisms to solve them will highlight the upcoming Responsible Mining Forum, a consultative dialogue between mining investors, private sector and the government on August 7 and 8 at the Royal Mandaya Hotel, Davao City.
The mining sector expects to identify the gaps in the implementation of the National Mineral Action Plan, identify regionally acceptable criteria to responsible mining, promote various opportunities in the mining industry and forge agreements among stake-holders to address the various gaps and emerging concerns.
If fully revitalized, the mining industry in Region 11 is projected to generate $1.6 billion income over the next six years, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) 11 assistant regional director Bonifacio Uy said.

Mindanao Daily Mirror
The Small Medium Enterprises Development (SMED) Council is eyeing the development of river highways to help minimize the impact of perennial flooding on the public.
DCCCII president and SMED Council chair Simeon Marfori II said the chamber is currently working on a concept paper urging the city government to study the possibility of developing the city’s rivers into a medium of transportation.
Aside from easing the problem of swelling city streets and highways, river highways will boost the tourism industry since they will give rise to the construction of floating restaurants and other related tourism industries, Marfori said.
He said river highways will also benefit farmers particularly on the transportation of goods from the upland areas.
Marfori, however, said the idea calls for a huge funding. “It sounds simple but the idea needs a lot of funding,” he said.
Marfori said government with the aid of multisectoral groups can look for funding donors to realize the project.
River highways will serve as a long-term solution to some of the city’s problems, particularly flooding, Marfori said. Judy Quiros

Metro Pacific recapitalizes to fund new businesses
By Zinnia B. Dela Peña
Tuesday, July 1, 2008
Metro Pacific Investments Corp. (MPIC), the local flagship of Hong Kong-based conglomerate First Pacific Co. Ltd., unveiled yesterday a recapitalization plan that involves an increase in its authorized capital stock to P12 billion from P4.6 billion and the conversion of existing advances into equity in Maynilad Water Services Inc., Makati Medical Center and Davao Doctors Hospital.
Manuel V. Pangilinan, chairman of MPIC, said the recapitalization plan will set the stage for future fund-raising activities for the company’s planned foray into infrastructure, agriculture, mining, port operations and healthcare.
The plan is expected to raise MPIC’s shareholders equity to P13 billion from P5.4 billion as of end-December last year. It is also expected to result in the improvement of the firm’s net asset value per share by 11 percent to P1.84.
Pangilinan said the increase in capitalization will boost foreign participation in the company with the creation of preferred shares.
MPIC president Jose Ma. K. Lim said the new capitalization will comprise 11.95 billion common shares with a par value of P1 and five billion preferred shares with a par value of P0.01 each.
The minimum subscription for the increase in capital will come from the conversion of MPIC’s P2.03 billion worth of notes held by Metro Pacific Holdings Inc. (MPHI) equivalent to 1.89 billion shares.
Under the plan, MPIC will issue up to 1.57 billion new common shares to MPHI at P2 each share to settle advances made by MPHI to acquire 34 percent of Davao Doctors and First Pacific’s 10.3-percent stake in Maynilad.
Lim said MPIC’s ownership in DMCI-MPIC Water Co. (Bidco) , the consortium that won the bid to acquire 84 percent of Maynilad, the water concessionaire of the western part of Metro Manila, will increase from 20.8 percent to 55.3 percent through the conversion of First Pacific’s notes valued at $57 million, and the acquisition of Ashmore Investment Management Ltd.’s 24.2-percent interest in Bidco for $140 million. Both transactions are expected to be closed in July.
Funding for the acquisition of Ashmore’s stake in Bidco will come from First Pacific, which intends to settle this through the issuance of 2.22 billion new common shares to MPHI equivalent to $100 million. The remaining $40 million will be settled by way of shareholder advances.
When completed, the acquisitions will result in a 51-percent economic interest in Maynilad, with DMCI owning 45 percent.
“With Maynilad poised to implement its service improvement program which will raise the service quality within its west zone concession as well as to grow its customer base, Maynilad will deliver greater profits this year and the years to come. The acquisition will allow MPIC to consolidate a proportionately greater share of Maynilad’s profits,” Pangilinan said.

Footprints By Tony Vn. Figueroa
Davao Oriental, c. 1907
THIS MAY sound strange, but in the early part of the American era Davao Oriental, in contrast to its label as the ‘coconut capital’ of the country today, was a primary source of pearl.
A Report of the Philippine Commission to the Secretary of War in 1908 showed that by 1907 the country was already exporting pearl shells. It earned P111,124 from the deal, part of which came from a pearl bank that cultured shells and oysters in the eastern sector of Davao.
The project was led by Alvin Seale, an American fish investigator, with three Filipino lieutenants aiding him in collecting marine samples in Davao Gulf.
So encouraging was the initial exploration that in a single day Seale’s group collected 212 different species from the gulf alone. He initially worked on his fish investigations aboard the steamship USS Albatross (after whom the Philippine scientific expedition of American scientists was named) , but decided against pursuing them after finding that the vessel was lacking in equipment, and the conditions therein were inappropriate for his experiments.
In his May 20, 1908 report, Seale noted that four pearl boats manned by local technicians presumably trained by the fish investigation himself were at work on the bed.
The pearl bank, the report added was “located in Paguipuian Strait, the most prolific part of the bed being in the narrow portion of the strait between Point Lana and Linao. The bed seems to owe its existence to the protection of the big reef called Arboles Island, in the upper of the strait, and to a strong eddy at the lower part, which permits the spot to settle down and attach. The bed is in from 16 to 30 fathoms of water. The bottom is smooth, of coral sand and broken shell; the banks drop abruptly down from the fringing coral reef into 15 to 16 fathoms, except in one or two places, where the shore is of sand, sloping at a sharp angle into deepwater.”
Between January and May 1, 1908, moreover, about 60 tons of shell valued at P43,000 were sold outside the country, mostly yields that were “small, probably not worth more than P10,000, very irregular shape but of good luster.”
Other pearl banks were also found along the south coast of Mindanao, confirming that pearl culture, although crude by today’s standards of cultivation was, at the turn of the 20th century, lucrative endeavor.
From Jan.1 to June 30, 1908, which was the cutoff of the Annual Reports made by the U.S. War Department, nine pearling licenses were issued at Davao.
Curiously, the roster of beneficiaries included only two Filipinos, with the other licensees were identified as Arab, Japanese, Spaniard, and Assyrians (Lebanese).
More than half a century later, the Aguinaldo Development Corp. opened in Samal Island a pearl farm that would cultivate oysters for export. The facility was co-managed by Japanese scientists who employed local divers to undertake the rigorous day-to-day seeding of the mollusks that were then abundant in the area.
The declaration of martial rule and the unusual interest shown by powerful Palace luminaries in the project eventually led to the collapse of the investment. As the Japanese scientists left the labs, Filipino technicians took over. But their lack of expertise in pearl culture hastened the closure of the pearl farm.
The former site of the farm is now a world-class resort owned by the Floirendo family.
Today, scientific farming of export-grade pearls in the Philippines is found only in Palawan where environment consciousness has become an attraction for investors.
Centuries earlier, the Sulu archipelago was the major pearl destination of merchants in pre-Hispanic times. Chinese traders aboard their junks would anchor at Jolo to buy pearls on their way home to China from the Spice Islands of Moluccas (now Maluku).
And who would forget about the world’s largest pearl?
The largest pearl known to man and recognized by the Guinness World Records was found inside a shell of giant clam in Palawan on May 7, 1934 by a diver. The marine gem, the Pearl of Lao-tze, also known as the Pearl of Allah, weighs 14 lbs and is a 9.5-in long by 5.5-in diameter mollusk concretion. The gem weighs 14 lbs and measures 9 ½-in long and has a diameter of 5 ½ in. It is believed to be 600 years old.
That should be clincher for the country’s moniker of being “Pearl of the Orient.”

Banana Leaf Asian Cafe -- Offers good makan!
By Michael Ebro Dakudao
IN CASE you don’t understand Malay, makan means meals.Indeed, the folks at Davao City’s Banana Leaf Asian Café, located beside Chimes Specialty Store along Gov. Sales Street, have taken great pains to ensure that your dining experience at their outlet will be a most enjoyable one especially with the new dishes they are launching. Finally, they have encouraged master cook Rafael Villaester to prepare his new dishes to reflect the restaurant’s growth and diversity. “It reflects on what we do overall which is basically a food and beverage operation in an Asian, specifically ASEAN, context,” Villaester claims.
One wonders though if it is good home cooking or gourmet dining one gets at the Banana Leaf. The first evokes comforting simplicity with the food cooked fresh and served straight without much fuss. On the other hand, gourmet cooking is more polished with the use of complex ingredients and the attention to detail and presentation. But master cook Villaester presents both to diners at the Banana Leaf Asian Cafe. After all, Vancouver’s 10th annual Most Memorable Awards has blessed the Banana Leaf Malaysian Cuisine with the culinary accolade as “The Best Other Asian” award. No small feat, indeed.
But honestly, I still think that Davao’s Banana Leaf franchise has more to offer than the original ones (with branches in Broadway and Denman) in Vancouver, Canada. Davao’s Banana Leaf cuisine is a melting pot of influences in flavorings of lemongrass, basil, coconut, chiles and lime (if not calamansi) served in a nicely appointed spot; with the restaurant’s interior done in subtle earthy colors typical of sophisticated Asian restaurants in the metro areas. And you get to eat on a clean piece of banana leaf which serves as your plate. How ecologically friendly can you get. But I wouldn’t dare eat with my bare hands in public.
And my, dining in Banana Leaf in Davao costs a lot less and definitely, with better and friendlier service when compared to the ones in Vancouver. Supervisor Rey Albert Quines, ably supported by receptionist Hannah de Lara and servers Ben John Martinez, Mario Lawani and Melvin Deiparine who are all dressed in Malaysian sarongs wrapped around their waists, will always guarantee the Banana Leaf’s discerning diners with that total satisfaction expected from the family-oriented establishment. In the kitchen, veteran master cook Villaester is supported by his assistant cook Jundel Aspacio along with the kitchen crew comprised of Rosalio Candari, Roberto Pasagdan and Leonel Bongcalis.
Malaysian selections range from the subtle Hainanese steamed chicken with ginger and garlic dip, my all-time favorite, to crisp fried Tilapia Fillet with Malayan Cream Sauce, spicey Malayan Beef and Curry with Potatoes, Wok-fried Squid with Basil Leaves and Chili, Penang Char Kway Toew, and Crabmeat with Vegetables, not to forget the amazing Curry Laksa or Shrimp Wonton Soup. In the Vietnamese column are the classic Vietnamese Prawn Ball with Cheese, Vietnamese Fried Rice plus a symphony of rice noodle dishes with fresh herbs plus Honey-garlic Spareribs.
Another new invention is the Roti Dog which comes with the mango and curry sauces. Heavenly indeed are the Steamed Hong Kong fish fillet with garlic (pricey but worth it), Macau style baked Mixed Vegetables in Portuguese Sauce (the best in fusion cuisine), Banana Leaf Orange Chicken and the Indonesian Nasi Goreng. Even the Deep Fried Chicken in Pandan Leaf was so succulent and juicy this time. I still couldn’t believe I sampled all these delights in one unforgettable dinner. Everything was so good that I forced myself to hit the gym an hour after to burn the dreaded calories.
Interesting desserts include the sweet sago soup with coconut milk, the refreshing chilled mango cream with pomelo bits (interesting interplay of sweet and sour), sangkaya or coconut custard, and the sago pudding in Thai Pandan leaf. Master Cook Villaester recommends the Iced Malaysian Pulled Tea, iced lemon tea Hong Kong Style and the iced Chrysanthemum Tea Shake for drinks to accompany your makan. But I just couldn’t give up my Coke Zero.
The Banana Leaf Asian Cafe is a guaranteed culinary experience of the most memorable meals Asia has to offer in a relaxed and comfortable setting which balances gentle formality with genuine warmth. For reservation and inquiries, call the Banana Leaf Asian Cafe at 225-8898.

Since Manila Water is operating in a privatized machinery, handled by the Ayala and various foreign partners, it is not under Local Water Utilities Authority thus it is not a water district.:)

Mindanao - holiday in rebel country
By CHRIS PRITCHARD - AAP | Tuesday, 01 July 2008
http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/4602642a2181.html
Perception is the problem. Or so I'm told. It's a claim I hear again and again in Davao.
"People believe wrongly that this is a violent destination but it isn't," sighs city administrator Wendel Avisado. "We happen to be on the island of Mindanao - and people are warned `don't go to Mindanao - it's dangerous'."
Of Davao's 1.5 million people, 95 percent are Christian (mostly Catholic). It is reputedly the Philippines' cleanest city. Streets are swept regularly. Footpaths are dotted with garbage bins. Smoking is outlawed except in designated areas. Taxis are modern and metered, with rip-offs rare.
Crime levels are low. Mayors are powerful in the Philippines and Davao's, Harley-Davidson-riding Rodrigo Duterte, runs a tough-guy administration that keeps the streets safe.
Davao is one of Asia's most fascinating holiday destinations. Direct flights bring in tourists from Singapore and Hong Kong (including many expatriates resident there). Other visitors, including package tourists from South Korea - the Philippines' number-one market - transit through Manila.
But few Australians are to be seen, because of travel warnings to keep out of Mindanao.
The Philippines government is fighting a long-running war against Muslim separatist guerillas, some belonging to the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and others supporting a more radical breakaway called Abu Sayyaf.
Kidnap and murder are real risks in some parts of the big island - closer to Zamboanga and Basilan, for instance. Sadly, this unpleasant fact has impeded tourism growth in tranquil Davao.
The national picture doesn't help. Criticism inside the country cites poor transport links and below-standard airports as reasons tourism isn't surging.
Tourism secretary Joseph Durano recently acknowledged a target of five million tourists a year by 2010 is unlikely to be met.
So, the Philippines remains a bit player on the Asian tourism stage. Australians and others throng Thailand and Bali but a comparative trickle reaches the Philippines.
Bali is a sore point in Davao. Officials contend that, while violence in some parts of Indonesia doesn't stop foreigners streaming to Bali, incidents elsewhere in Mindanao succeed in derailing Davao's tourism growth.
This seems a pity because Davao is a splendid and easily reached destination. A modern city, it boasts malls and markets (with cheap shopping), tropical parkland, diverse cultural attractions, good golf courses, white-sand beaches, white-water rafting, hiking, memorable restaurants and superb resorts.
For instance, I check out the Pearl Farm Beach Resort. Tourists snorkel in clear water, some go wreck-diving, a few laze in hammocks on over-water balconies. Dining is five-star and accommodation is as good as at the best Thai or Maldivian resorts.
It's often full and staff tell me Hong Kong, Singapore and Germany are key sources of custom.
Food in this port city is very seafood-oriented. This is no surprise because tuna-fishing is one of Davao's main industries.
Local delicacies include panga (grilled tuna jaw) and kinilaw (marinated raw tuna). Among many fine seafood restaurants, the no-frills Luz Kinilaw excels.
However, the main attraction bringing tourists here is the Philippine Eagle Centre, an hour's drive from the city. Its aim is to save sorely endangered Philippine eagles, of which only 500 pairs are believed to survive in the wild. Logging and encroaching farming are destroying their habitat.
The centre welcomes visitors as a means to fund its work. Thirty-two eagles live at the centre, half of them captive-born.
The Philippine eagle is awesome - and among the world's largest birds. It weighs up to 7kg, with a two two-metre wingspan.
While some birds are captive-bred, others are retrieved by farmers who find them injured on the ground. Others were pets kept illegally and confiscated by authorities.
The centre frees some birds in remote forests.
Captive breeding involves a bizarre artificial insemination programme. Human surrogates live with the birds in their nests - enormous structures allowing the birds to fly and build high platform-like nests.
Birds in the breeding programme are shielded from seeing other eagles and so regard the surrogate, who spends many hours with them, as an eagle. Surrogates wear protective leather clothing but nevertheless bear scars from being affectionately clawed and pecked.
When the time is deemed right, semen is collected manually from a male bird and spirited to another cage where a surrogate has earned the trust of a female - which permits fertilisation.
Staff resorted to this method of captive breeding after finding easily-stressed eagles failed to breed if anaesthetised for fertilisation.
A local contact points me to Davao's oddest lodgings: Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel. A 30-roomer, its exterior is encrusted by giant sculptures. Internal corridors are filled with hundreds of paintings and sculptures - some using junk such as discarded typewriters or electronics.
All are the work of a famous Philippine artist named Kublai (real name: Rey Mudjahid Ponce Millan but he uses his nickname).
"It's only 10 percent of my work," the prolific artist tells me in his hotel's rooftop bar-restaurant.
Kublai drives me to the neighbouring province of Davao del Sur. We cross plains of rice, climb through mountainous farmland and small villages for nearly two hours - and, finally, park beneath Agung House, a giant modernist sculpture that contains a two-bedroom house with a view of Mt Apo, tallest peak in the Philippines.
Next day I venture north to another neighbouring province, Davao del Norte, to visit members of two of Mindanao's 13 tribes. Traditional weaving is demonstrated and tribal music performances draw crowds of village kids.
In the province's Tagum City, I stop to admire the world's largest Rosary (85.5 metres long and made of balls of wood) before visiting Muslim members of the Kalagan tribe.
Tribe members tell me they earn their money collecting mud crabs from the mangroves. (Some Muslims don't eat seafood but this community does.)
Modernity has had its impact. Members of the tribe tote mobile telephones, wear designer sunglasses and live in relatively affluent circumstances.
At a park outside Davao called Eden Resort, I see full-size replicas of traditional-style dwellings of Mindanao tribes. Customs of different tribes are explained.
"Elsewhere in the Philippines, less of the age-old tribal culture endures," says Professor Jowel Canuday, a Davao-based authority on the area's indigenous culture.
"It's a pity more people don't see it - before it's gone."
IF YOU GO
Philippine Airlines flies between Australia and Manila, the Philippines capital, with frequent 90-minute jet connections to Davao.
Alternatively, Davao is served by other carriers' non-stop services from Hong Kong and Singapore.
Australian and most other passport holders do not need visas for holiday visits.
$A1 buys about P41 (Philippine pesos) ($NZ1.30).
Pearl Farm Beach Resort is an opulent resort reached by short launch transfer, Waterfront Insular Hotel is an upscale resort-setting property only 10 minutes by metered taxi from downtown and Ponce Suites Gallery Hotel is a delightfully quirky art-filled hotel with rooftop restaurant-bar surprisingly modestly-priced in the mid-market niche.
The Australian government's travel advice website currently advises against visiting Mindanao. However, aside from Australians, tourists are plentiful: direct flights bring visitors from Hong Kong and Singapore (including many resident expatriates) to resorts such as the Pearl Farm. Korean package tourists are also numerous.

Relax, the current admin is doing its best for the city. You may have a spanking sports complex yet your people shudder all the time because of threats in the security. Davao City's own sports complex is already in the drawing board and ready with funds, and is only waiting for the land row to be ironed out. Here's the thing, if we compare ourselves with others, almost always, we become discontent with what we have. Just a thought..

MGB: Shrine Hills' developers complied with requirements
Sunstar Davao
THE Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB)-Southern Mindanao said Monday that the developers on the controversial area of Shrine Hills have complied with the necessary requirements.
"They are following regulation, they have completed the requirements," said Ed Arreza, regional technical director of MGB-Southern Mindanao.
One of the requirements set forth by MGB is the Engineering Geologic and Geo-hazard Assessment.
Last May, real estate developers with projects in Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City were required by MGB to submit a comprehensive report on the geo-hazards in their respective area.
Multiple high-end real estate developments at Shrine Hills are now ongoing amidst protest of some sectors.
The panoramic view that can be seen from the hills is one of the factors why the area is a priced jewel of real estate.
Among the threats identified by MGB is the possibility of ground movement and ground subsidence, more commonly known as sink holes. The threat varies, depending on the development introduced in the area.
Crown Communities, one of the real estate developers of a 24-hectare property on the slopes of Shrine Hills, earlier said they have implemented standard measures in the development of their property.
Officials of Crown Communities said they have spent more that P1 million for the study of the area, even prior to their actual purchase of the property.
The property has been dubbed as "Positano," named after an Italian coastal city that sits upon an enclave of hills. (CPM)

AS THE secretariat of the Davao chamber's SME Development (Smed) Council, which proposes Davao River to be transformed into river highways, the regional office of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) expresses support to the proposal.
Teolulo Pasawa, DTI-Davao director, said the Smed Council is conducting an ongoing discussion with the possibility of transforming Davao River into river highways.
"Davao River was proposed to have waterways and floating restaurants, it is a proposal which could be of great help to the community," Pasawa said.
He added that he still has no idea as to how much will be needed for the completion of the project.
"As of now, there's still no amount involved, on going pa kasi ang study," he said.
Earlier, Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. president Simeon Marfori said the proposal will not only boost economy of the city, but also can raise awareness among the people who live near the river.
He said people can realize the worth of the river as a means of transportation and livelihood other than utilize it as a dumping site of wastes. (JGRS)

New Aussie envoy visits city
Sunstar Davao
NEW Australian Ambassador Rod Smith visited Australian government-funded aid programs and witnessed the groundbreaking for the new Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office in Camp Catitipan during his visit here on June 24-26.
Smith's visit kicked-off with a courtesy call to Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta, Davao City's acting mayor and Patricia Melizza Ruivivar, Chief of Staff, Office of the Mayor.
He was joined by Peter Jensen, Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) Counsellor and Dr. Ian D'Arcy Walsh, Philippine-Australia Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (Beam) Australian Project Director.
The acting mayor thanked the Australian Government for its "support and partnership with the city in strengthening the quality of and access to basic education and the various development trainings in Australia for Dabawenyos."
As a token of friendship, the ambassador was given a symbolic key to the city.
"I am thankful for the opportunity to visit and for the warm welcome given to me. Having only arrived in the Philippines last March, I am most pleased that the first place I visited outside of Manila is Davao City," he said.
The first leg of his visit was to the Santa Ana Elementary School and the Institute for Indigenous Peoples Education (IIPE), both of which are supported by AusAID through the Beam Project.
Department of Education (DepEd)-Southern Mindanao Director and Philippine project manager for Beam Susana Teresa Estigoy thanked the Australian Government for its on-going support to public basic education.
Estigoy said that Beam's work in particular led to a very significant impact in teaching and learning processes inside the classroom.
"It is very encouraging to us that so many of the things we are doing in Region 11 are being picked up by DepEd Central Office for national implementation," she said.
In Santa Ana Central Elementary School, Ambassador Smith observed the implementation of the Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (Alive) classes. Alive is a groundbreaking initiative of the Beam project where the Arabic Language and Muslim education is integrated in public elementary schools with a significant number of Muslim students.
Wearing the traditional Muslim headgears "hijab" and "kupiya," students answered trivia questions from the ambassador and rendered a song number for the guests.
The school officials and community leaders also presented their School Improvement Plan (SIP) and discussed the positive changes in the teachers teaching strategies and community involvement.
"The community participation in Santa Ana Elementary School is very commendable," Ambassador Smith said. "The real journey to better education is driven by the teachers and the community."
At the IIPE Center in Mabini Street, the ambassador met with children and tribal leaders from the various indigenous groups in Southern Mindanao. He also read a story about Australia to the very enthusiastic IP children.
"The different IP communities that Beam is assisting have their own unique knowledge, systems and practices. For learning to be fully appreciated and achieve maximum impact, Beam and DepEd have developed a culturally-relevant and holistic curriculum and learning materials for indigenous children," he said.
"The Australian Government looks forward to more fruitful and productive endeavors with its partners and hope that the Australian people's contribution will go a long way in building a better future for Filipino children," he added.
Smith also graced the Mindanao Commission for Women's Kamindanawan 2008 opening ceremony at the Waterfront Insular Hotel and groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the new Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office in Camp Catitipan.

Mindanao miners press for faster permit approval
Business World
DAVAO CITY — Mindanao miners want a clearing house formed under the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) that will ensure that their documentation and other requirements are complete before they submit their formal applications for permits to the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) in Manila.
This way, said Edgar D. Martinez, president of the Min-danao Association of Mining Industries which consists largely of small- and medium-scale miners, they can hope for faster official action on their applications for permits. "This will make it easier for us comply with whatever requirements the government will require from us," Mr. Martinez said.
He lamented that several applications of local companies have not been acted on even if these had been filed years ago. Among others, officials who are authorized to act on these applications take their time, even if the only action required is to inform applicants that they lack certain documents or other requirements.
This, Mr. Martinez said, is one reason mining industry growth is not as fast as the government would have wanted, even if Manila expects this field to drive investments growth this year.
MGB Regional Dir. Edilberto L. Arreza had earlier admitted that mining industry growth has been sluggish, and that investments in this field in this region alone would have hit P1.7 billion this year, with minerals replacing even banana as its top exports.
He said only two big projects have been operating in the Davao Region: Holcim Philippines, which is into cement production, and Apex Mining Co., owned partly by Crew Gold Corp. of Canada.
He said four other mining projects have yet to start, namely: the government-run mining in Diwalwal, Monkayo, Compostela Valley; the Kingking copper pro-ject in Pantukan, Compostela Valley; the North Davao gold mining project also in Compo-stela Valley; and the Pujada nickel project in Davao Oriental.
Asiaticus Management Corp. has also announced it will start drilling holes for exploration to confirm nickel prospects of the 11,799-hectare project in Mati after it decided to scrap its deal with Australia’s BHP Billiton over the alleged failure of the latter to start operations. The controversy has reached the courts.
Undersecretary Virgilio L. Leyretana, chairman of MEDCo, said implementing guidelines of Republic Act No. 7942, or the Philippine Mining Act of 1995, must be reviewed to give local governments more authority over mining projects in their areas of jurisdiction.
Although he did not categorically agree with the proposal to entrust his office this new responsibility, Mr. Leyretana said the law should be "re-tailored" to the needs of the industry. "I look at it [the proposal] with an open mind," he said.
Earlier, Davao Oriental Gov. Corazon N. Malanyaon complained that while local governments are obliged to ensure that miners observe environment laws, they are not authorized to review applications for mining permits that could weed out prospective problem projects from the start.
A two-day mining summit that opens on August 7 here will discuss why industry growth has not been as fast, and what could be done to revitalize it. "We need to push the industry now. It has so much potential that it can help develop Mindanao as an area of investments," Mr. Leyretana said in an interview.
Mr. Arreza said the summit will also discuss how the government can stop mining speculation as some of the permit grantees in Mindanao have not moved to develop the areas awarded them.
Ricardo L. Calderon, Environment and Natural Resources regional director, said the summit will discuss enforcing a "use it or lose it" policy, which will rescind the permit of a mining company that fails to develop its project.
A recent Reuters report cited government data as showing that investments in Philippine mining hit just $68 million in the first quarter, only 8% of an overall target of $838 million for the year. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

I think the govt should sweep all the inhabitants in the river banks for they are an eyesore in the city. The govt should intensify in relocating these inhabitants in the far flung districts of the city. BUT BUT this is not easy, I know.. The Government and its officials should have strong political will, to be able to sweep away the banks of Davao River.
If Davao River banks are clean on both sides, then it is easy for the govt to implement projects and promote commerce and tourism in the area.

Tourism players to converge for MTTE 2008
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (3 July) -- Owners, school operators and tourism industry players of Mindanao together with the government officials of the education sector will converge in Davao City next month in time for the 3rd Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE 2008) to reconcile needs of both camps for the benefit of the students who will later seek employment.
Joji Ilagan Bian, chair of the Mindanao Technical Vocational Education and Training Association and president of the Joji Ilagan Career Centre Foundation, Inc. said at the Club 888 Forum of The Marco Polo Hotel that the MTTE offers opportunities to over 300 school operators in the island find out the kind of skills tourism industry players would need.
She said these educational institutions are offering tourism and hospitality courses and it is high time that they should know what are the appropriate qualities of graduates the industry are looking from the jobseekers by interacting face-to-face with the industry players.
The academe must now align their educational system to the requirement of the industry, she said.
The MTTE 2008, the biggest tourism assembly, will be held on August 8-10, 2008 at the Event Centre of SM City Davao.
The exhibit will gather hundreds of tour operators, travel agencies, transport groups, hotels, restaurants, resort, destinations and adventures and other tourism stakeholders during the three-day exposition.
Several regional offices of the Department of Tourism (nationwide), local government units in Mindanao and the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PhilTOA) will also be participating.
Part of the event is a one-day Jobs Fair and learning tracks session.
Bian said the track session will have noted speakers on various topics on Tour Guiding, Marketing and Promotion of Hotels and Resorts, International Hospitality and Opportunities in Wellness Tourism.
Bian noted that there are about half a million students in Mindanao as potential clients and focusing on human resource the time is right that the industry and the academe establish partnership.
"We have not been doing this before and it is a good thing this is now happening," she said.
Bian said job opportunities of this sort are high in the global market and students must improve on their skills because outside of the Philippines jobs in line with hospitality have stringent requirements.
But as far as the government is concerned, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) is issuing the National Certificate II (NC II) and one is given such certificate upon meeting competencies for two years.
The NC II is a requirement for jobs placement abroad for commercial cooks, bar tender, chambermaids, waiters and other related jobs.
She said it is now time for the tourism sector here to also look at NC II as a requirement before hiring one.
"NC II is voluntary but when the tourism industry here would require, prospective workers would comply," she said.
She said this is another way of pushing our workers to improve more and the industry to set higher standards of their workers.
"A satisfied tourist because of the services they get in tourism establishments will not only become a regular visitor here but also opening doors for others to come," she said.
Bian said this will happen only when our frontliners effectively and efficiently deliver their service in accordance with international standards. (PIA) [top]

Academe-MTTE partnership
shores up tourism industry
BY JUDY QUIROS
About 500 owners and operators of schools in Mindanao offering tourism and hospitality courses are expected to participate in the 3rd Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) 2008 on August 8 to 10.
Speaking in yesterday’s Club 888 Forum at The Marco Polo, Davao, Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation, Inc. president Joji Ilagan-Bian said the event will be the first time the academe will work in tandem with the tourism sector in mounting the MTTE.
This year’s MTTE is being organized by the Mindanao Technical Vocational Education and Training Association (MinVET) and Joji Ilagan Career Center Foundation, Inc. in cooperation with the Department of Tourism (DOT) 11.
The MTTE 2008, Mindanao’s biggest tourism assembly, has the theme Barkadahan sa Octo-Break.
It will be held on August 8 to 10 at the Event Center of SM City Davao, side by side with the 7th Mindanao Human Resource Skills Development (HRSD) Summit, the biggest conference of school operators and administrators in Mindanao.
The three-day summit will have speakers talking about hospitality and tourism concerns.
Bian said the partnership of the academe and the tourism players is an important concept seeing the projected 89,000 to 100,000 students taking up tourism-related courses in Mindanao as potential tourism clients.
She also said there is a dire need to adopt a holistic approach in taking the opportunity of Davao City as best site for wellness tourism by upgrading the skills of the human resource.
For her part, DOT 11 regional director Sonia Garcia said upgrading the skills of the human resource will help improve the output of MTTE in particular and the tourism industry in general.
"Although tourism in Mindanao, specifically in Davao City is leaps and bounds ahead, we don’t have the needed human resource,” Garcia said.
“It is important that the academe and the tourism players partner with each other to come up with a productive output that would help address the tourism industry’s growth,” she added.
The MTTE will also feature a one-day Jobs Fair and various learning tracks sessions on various topics such as tour guiding, marketing and promotion of hotels and resorts, international hospitality and opportunities in wellness tourism.

Fil-American veterans, masons honored Friday
By Grace L. Plata
Sunstar Davao
THE Association of Descendants of American and Filipino Veterans and Masons in Davao City will mark Friday the Filipino-American Friendship Day with a memorial at the Davao American and Masonic Cemetery at Father Selga St.
Councilor Peter Laviña, who was invited to the celebration, said this would be the first time that they will pay tribute and honor the veterans during this historic occasion.
"There are over 250 American citizens, veterans, and masons buried at the cemetery just beside the city's Catholic cemetery," Laviña said Thursday.
Among these, Laviña cited former Davao City Mayor Pantaleon Pelayo Sr. (served in 1940-41) and three city councilors, Federico Opada (1938-41), Tiburcio Cervantes (1948-51), and Desiderio Dalisay Sr. (1950-54).
The United States of America (USA) marks July 4 as its Independence Day although the American Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence on July 2.
The Philippines used to celebrate it own Independence Day on July 4 but changed it to June 12. Hence the fourth of July is now celebrated as Filipino-American Friendship Day

Aussie envoy vows to strengthen Mindanao, BIMP-Eaga ties
Sunstar Davao
NEWLY appointed Australian Ambassador to the Philippines Rod Smith expressed Australia's continuing thrusts in strengthening cooperation on security, development cooperation, as well as Mindanao trade and investment in a courtesy call conducted at the Mindanao Economic Development Council (Medco) last week.
"Australia and the Philippines enjoy long-standing and close relations that date back to 1950," Smith said while citing that almost half of Australia's aid to the Philippines is being poured in Mindanao.
Smith was in Davao City along with the Australian Agency for International Aid's (AusAID) mission to develop its engagement strategy, which is now anchored on broadening its cooperation with development partners such as community-based organizations, professional bodies, and businesses to deliver more effective programs.
The mission visited Sta. Ana Central Elementary School in Davao City last week to witness the Arabic Language and Islamic Values Education (Alive) program under the Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao (Beam) of AusAID.
"I am pleased to note that your collective efforts and commitment to provide quality basic education are contributing to building a better future for Filipino children, and providing them with knowledge and skills so that they can contribute to your community and the country's development", said Smith while describing the success of the program as a result of the active participation of the school and the community.
Smith also visited the office of the Institute of Indigenous Peoples Education (IIPE) -- an institution established by a consortium led by the Department of Education (DepEd) with support from Beam.
"Australia is one with the Filipinos' hope that IP children and generations to come, especially in the 125 IP communities that Beam is assisting, will continue to be proud of their cultural integrity and perform excellently with other non-indigenous children," Smith said.
A lead grant donor in basic education, Australia is assisting the Philippines in meeting a lagging Millennium Development Goal indicator that is to achieve universal primary education by 2015.
Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana, Medco chairman, also lauded the AusAID's contribution in helping Medco capacitate its human resource through the Philippine Australia Human Resources Development Facility (PAHRDF).
"Medco was able to harmonize all the donor-assisted programs and projects in Mindanao through the Geographic Information System (GIS) support of AusAID," Leyretana said.
Through PAHRDF, AusAID also helped Medco develop an Integrated Peace and Development Framework for its programs and projects.
The newly developed Medco peace and development framework builds on Mindanao 2000's thrusts for economic growth and poverty alleviation, with peace building as a new, important component.
"Mindanao has a lot of potentials that remain untapped," said Leyretana, while mentioning that some investors may not be coming to Mindanao because of the region's image problem.
"Security is really important," said Smith while eyeing tourism as the island's very lucrative potential aside from its mineral deposits.
Smith recently participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Philippine National Police Mindanao Intelligence Office at Camp Catitipan in Davao City.
The said office, which is funded by the Australian government, will house Scene of the Crime Operatives (SOCO), Philippine Bomb Data Center (PBDC), and Mindanao Area Police Intelligence Office (MAPIO) to counter terrorism in Mindanao.
In its continuing efforts to revitalize the sub-regional economic cooperation of Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Areas (BIMP-Eaga), AusAID also supports a technical assistance program called "Best on Customs Immigration Quarantine and Security" for Medco and partner agencies.
The project seeks to enhance the capacity of the CIQS unit within the Medco secretariat and CIQS agencies in Southern Philippines to deliver CIQS services at ports and help strengthen border security in BIMP-Eaga.
"The Australian government is very eager to help developing countries like the Philippines through its agency for international aid," said Smith. (Press release)

WawaY[625] July 5th, 2008, 01:43 AM from living in davao email group with regards to the closing of Lanang Golf
from Carlos tanjuatco
it is confirmed that SMPrime and SM Investments has bought the whole Lanang Country Club. They re going to build a mall complex, business complex, residential complex, hospitality complex, entertainement complex among others at the said property. estimated openning of the whole complex is last quarter of 2010.
from vicmindiati
I am sorry to see Lanang go as I know what it is like to have a place
to call your own. There was a certain arrogance in that club and the
owners probably did it to themselves with that. Maybe the talk of SM
going there has finally come true. Only the hand knows. In any event I
would guess that for those that played Lanang, Palos Verdes would be
the next best bet and convenient golf course. I had the pleasure to
play it for the first time the other day and it was wonderful. But it
ain't cheap. Just stay away from the food and drinks. While the course
does not play as hard as APO it is certainly more enjoyable with the
incredible views, landscaping, etc... so typical and great about a
Sta. Lucia developed course. Hey but before you go and spend 250,000P
for a share at APO, keep in mind that Golf Courses are generally a
losing proposition. Most DO NOT make money and Apo is no exception. I
guess many (reluctantly) should say thank you to the Koreans that
while not the most appreciated (for reasons of etiquette) members of
golf courses are in a way responsible for keeping them above water
financially. I have played with a few Koreans and personally have no
complaints but apparently that is not the Status Quo opinion. Back to
Golf Course heroics.... Here in the Philippines it is the sale of all
the lots surrounding the Golf course that keep them $$$$green and then
the monthly dues more or less keep them operating slightly
profitability. Of all the developers Sta Lucia is the best. They
always sell out. They are also building another golf course that it on
the way to Buda about 8 clicks off McArthur Hwy. The name eludes me.

But I can recall the article stating that opening date will be within the first quarter of 2009.
The building will have approximately 14,000 sqm of gross floor area, and will house spaces for coffee shops, restaurants, and retail outlets in the ground floor, and BPO spaces in the second floor. Robinsons Supermarket and Handy Man will also be housed in the building.

junax July 5th, 2008, 02:04 AM IT firm in Singapore plans to locate here
A SINGAPORE-based investor is interested in putting up a call center company in Davao City, according to the director of the Board of Investments (BOI) for Mindanao.
BOI chief for Mindanao Gil Dureza said Samuel Acosta, information technology (IT) manager, and Alvin Nathan, director of the Eureka Advisory PTE Ltd., have already visited the city for this perspective.
"They already visited Davao and they enjoyed the climate here. They moved around by night, they noticed the presence of some foreign-based companies and were convinced that Davao City is a secure place," Dureza said.
He said Acosta and Nathan also inspected the labor market of Davao and realized it is good.
"They plan to put up a call center company here because in Singapore, there is a very fast turnover of the labor market resulting in shortage of manpower," Dureza said.
He added that in Singapore, the lowest rate of an IT staff is P50,000 per month.
As to the image problem of Mindanao, Dureza said the investors did not mind the risk.
"Acosta is actually from Cotabato City, so he is used to that image perception," Dureza said.
He said Davao City is far better than Cotabato in terms of peace and security.
Initially, Dureza said if the perspective of the investors will materialize, a capacity of 50- to 80- seater call center company will then be added to the expanding number of call center companies in Davao City.
Davao City now has six to seven call center companies, said Dureza. (JGRS)

"25 cities make it to competitive list"
Twenty-five of the country’s 90 cities surveyed emerged as most competitive based on a survey recently conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).
In addition, smaller cities were found reforming faster and better compared to major and medium-sized counterparts. Results of the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2007, launched in Makati City yesterday, showed it was harder for metropolitan areas such as Metro Manila, Metro Cebu, and Metro Davao to institute reforms due to their large population.
"The results showed that small is beautiful. Some of the smaller cities appeared to be doing well than most mid-sized and big cities. This is primarily because bigger cities are harder to manage. Maybe what these small cities had done could be replicated by mid-sized and big cities," AIM Policy Center Executive Director Federico Macaranas said.
The nationwide survey conducted last year was aimed at measuring the competitiveness of 90 cities classified into three categories: small, mid-sized, and metropolitan.
It surveyed 45 cities in Luzon, 21 in Visayas and 24 in Mindanao, or 20 metropolitan, 25 mid-sized, and 45 small cities. It used six drivers to measure competitiveness, namely, cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, human resources and training, infrastructure, responsiveness of local government units (LGUs) to business needs and quality of life. Respondents were asked to rate these indicators using a 10-point standard scale.
Results showed it was less expensive to do business in smaller cities, or those with a population of 200,000 or less, having scored 8.49 compared with metro cities’ 7.22 and 8.07 in mid-sized cities. Infrastructure or transportation and utility services; responsiveness of local government units to business needs or investment promotion, ease and transparency and city administration; and quality of life or environment, peace and order and health, were also ranked better in smaller cities than mid-sized and metro cities.
Metro and mid-sized cities, meanwhile, ranked above smaller cities in terms of dynamism of economy or firms’ growth and performance, access to financing and voice in LGUs, with a score of 4.16 and 4.34, respectively compared with small cities’ 3.9; and human resources training or available manpower and skills-enhancement program, having scored 7.46 and 7.67, respectively, from 7.26 in small cities.
"Metro cities have the facilities, colleges, universities to train their people. The problem is, the talent does not stay in these cities. Skilled people go abroad to seek better opportunities," Mr. Macaranas said. Twenty-five cities were chosen as top performers — four from the National Capital Region, 11 from Luzon, four from Visayas, and six from Mindanao.
For the metro category, Davao, Lapu-Lapu, Makati, Manila, Marikina, and Quezon Cities made it to the list. Mid-sized cities Cabanatuan, General Santos, Lucena, Olongapo, San Pablo, Tagum and Tarlac were alos in the list while Bayawan, Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog, Laoag, San Fernando, Malaybalay, Naga, Surigao, Tagbilaran, and Tuguegarao Cities were named most competitive small cities. — Bernardette S. Makati, Cabanatuan, Tagbilaran are RP's best cities to live in

Among the best cities in the Philippines, Makati City, Cabanatuan City in Nueva Ecija, and Tagbilaran City in Bohol offer the best quality of life, according to a new survey of the Asian Institute Management (AIM).
These three cities ranked highest in the quality of life category among 25 cities that made it to the AIM’s Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2007, a survey of cities’ global competitiveness.
The cities were separately ranked according to size. Makati, Cabanatuan, and Tagbilaran were categorized as metro, mid-sized and small-sized, respectively.
Quality of life is one of six categories in AIM’s survey. The other categories are cost of doing business, dynamism of local economy, human resources and training, infrastructure, and responsiveness of local government units (LGUs) to business needs.
Unlike its previous surveys, AIM decided not to rank the cities based on total performance.
This is the 5th round of the AIM survey on Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking.
Quality of life is considered one of the yardsticks in determining which cities have successfully developed and which have succumbed to the ills of urbanization.
Among the relevant aspects of quality of life are social welfare of the people, peace, and order, quality of living environment, and local amenities.
Cabanatuan and Tagbilaran ranked first in their respective city sizes, rating 7.17 and 7.97, respectively. The highest rating is 10 points. The average rating in their city sizes is 6.31 and 6.43, respectively.
Makati ranked second among metro cities, with a rating of 6.98. The average rating of metro cities in terms of quality of life is 6.06.
Cabanatuan was credited for its good access to commercial banks, low or non-existent informal fees, and total crime solution efficiency.
Tagbilaran was noted for its low or non-existent informal fees, good supply of water, and low water rates. Its local environmental planning and management program was also praised.
Makati was recognized for its good access to commercial banks, total crime solution efficiency, and supply of potable water among others. AIM also noted its programs such as the Makati Health Program, the “Yellow Card,” the Makati Command Center, and its Satellite Real Property Tax collection.
A total of 90 cities were surveys—20 metro cities, 25 mid-sized cities, and 45 small-sized cities. The AIM survey was conducted in collaboration with the German Technical Cooperation, International Finance Corporation, International Labour Organization, SM Investments Inc., and Petron Corporation.
The following is the complete list of the top performing cities.

Davao, 4 Metro Manila cities are ‘most competitive’
By Daxim Lucas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 03:54:00 07/05/2008
MANILA, Philippines—Six metropolitan areas—four of them in Metro Manila—were identified as the country’s most competitive cities for doing business in an annual survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center.
Named top metropolitan cities in 2007 Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Program were Davao, Lapu-Lapu, Makati, Manila, Marikina and Quezon City.
They were ranked based on their respective costs of doing business; the dynamism of the local economies; human resources and training; infrastructure; the responsiveness of the local government units to business’ needs, and the quality of life of their inhabitants.
This year’s survey covered 90 cities, 25 of which were cited for their competitiveness in the metropolitan, medium-sized and small-sized city categories.
The annual survey is a research undertaking of the AIM Policy Center that seeks to identify the best cities in the country in which to live, work and operate a business.
The annual survey is an important indicator that helps businessmen determine which cities are “the most dynamic,” AIM Policy Center director Federico Macaranas said at a news briefing.
He said cities adjudged to be the best in the country often experienced an inflow of investments immediately after.
“One city that was awarded received so much direct investments that they couldn’t cope with it,” Macaranas said. “They even had to ask the national government for help.”
According to the survey, the best medium-sized cities in the country were Cabanatuan, General Santos, Lucena, Olongapo, San Pablo, Tagum and Tarlac City.
The best small-sized cities were Bayawan, Calapan, Calbayog, Dagupan, Dipolog, Laoag, Malaybalay, Naga, Surigao, Tagbilaran, Tuguegarao, and San Fernando, La Union.
Macaranas said the annual award also has the effect of pushing other cities which participate in the survey to improve their overall competitiveness to match their peers.
“Cities that lose in the competition often ask us why they lost, and they try to improve on those aspects,” he said.
At the news briefing, Calbayog City Mayor Mel Senen Sarmiento, secretary general of the League of Cities of the Philippines, said the annual rankings also helped local governments improve the running of their cities.
“It ensures the sustainability of our programs,” he said, adding that even private sector stakeholders in the cities—like the business communities—help ensure that initiatives started by the local governments survive even after the mayor’s term ends.
Launched in 1999, the program aims to promote national competitiveness by encouraging healthy competition among highly urbanized and emerging cities, emphasizing the crucial roles of small and medium-scale enterprises as the backbone of local development.

For a certain period of time, Davao City became the capital of the Empire Province of Davao (now divided into Region XI or Davao Provinces) just like its Cotabato counterpart (Cotabato City)..
The question, what and where is the Provincial Capitol of the Empire Province of Davao? Do they share the same building (the current City Hall of Davao) or do they have seperate edifices like that of Cotabato (the old city hall in the plaza and the capitol at PC Hill).
Thanks in advance! :)

Davao City was still a forested area( and the rest of the region) when the Spaniards went to Davao as far as i know they first established an outpost somewhere in Oriental, thats why you can find more heritage bldgs. and sites in Davao Oriental. When the Americans started to settle in Davao City and the Japanese began establishing business then they transferred the capital in DC.

Ah. I see. I was referring to the Davao post-war period. Because I've noticed that the Mindanao's political map on the 50's are somewhat have big territories. No del nortes and del surs.
Its just Zamboanga, Misamis, Davao, Lanao, Cotabato, Agusan and Surigao.
And I am theorizing that the old capitals of the once empire provinces have at least an old provincial capitol or a city hall.

Was this during Oyanguren's conquest?
dinabaw July 5th, 2008, 05:28 AM Was this during Oyanguren's conquest?
before Oyanguren , Oyanguren just defeated the Datu Bago & he renamed the region Nueva Guipozcoa, in honor of his home in Spain, , Davao City itself never prospered under his governship. It was really the Americans who paved the way in the economic growth of Davao.
habagatcentral1 July 5th, 2008, 05:31 AM ^^ Thanks! Another question:
When did Davao-kuo started?
For one according to some of the researches, the Americans hastily populated Mindanao with Christian settlers of Luzon and the Visayas in pre-war government resettlement program under NLSA..Nat'l Land Settlement Administration (supervised by General Paulino Santos) because of the danger of Japanese using Davao as a base for its "imperial action" during the invasion of China in the 1930's. They were trying to neutralize the big Japanese population in Davao-kuo.

dinabaw is right, davao city is the capital of the post-war davao province. but now it is the only chartered big city outside NCR that got no remnants of a provincial capitol (because cebu city still hosts the provincial capitol of cebu province even though it is already independent and chartered like davao too).

That is true, i guess Manuel L. Quezon got jittery when Davao was populated by Japanese immigrants , that was the time when the Japanese is posturing as a treat to Americans in the Pacific, during the war it was known some Japanese immigrants who are spies.

erratum:
when Davao was divided by virtue of Republic Act No. 4867 authored by Representative Lorenzo S. Sarmiento, Sr and signed into law in 1967 the subdivisions were;
Davao (carried the original name of the province)
Davao Oriental
Davao del Sur
In 1969 Davao Province was changed into Davao Del Norte. But many still use the original name.. referring to DDN :)

Davao, 4 Metro Manila cities are ‘most competitive’

Macaranas said the annual award also has the effect of [b]pushing other cities which participate in the survey to improve their overall competitiveness[/size] to match their peers.
Launched in 1999, the program aims to promote national competitiveness by encouraging healthy competition among highly urbanized and emerging cities, emphasizing the crucial roles of small and medium-scale enterprises as the backbone of local development.

davaoeagle July 5th, 2008, 09:51 AM Tourism industry players to converge for MTTE 2008
Published : 2008-07-04
Mindanao Times
OWNERS, school operators and tourism industry players of Mindanao together with the government officials of the education sector will converge next month in time for the 3rd Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE 2008) to reconcile needs of both camps for the benefit of the students who will later seek employment.
“We have not been doing this before and it is a good thing this is now happening,” she said.
“NC II is voluntary but when the tourism industry here would require, prospective workers would comply,” she said.
She said this is another way of pushing our workers to improve more and the industry to set higher standards of their workers. “A satisfied tourist because of the services they get in tourism establishments will not only become a regular visitor here but also opening doors for others to come,” she said. Thank God, Davao City is still the No. 1 most competitive city in the Philippines. It remains as the best place to do business in the country.
Results of the latest ranking by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center presented last night showed Davao City beating local government units in the capital Metro Manila. In the last survey two years ago, Davao City was tied for No. 1 with Makati City, the nation’s premier financial center.
A total of 90 local government units were included in the survey, metropolitan, mid-sized and small cities. Davao City topped two of six key competitive drivers and scored the highest rate among highly urbanized cities.
Key drivers:
Cost of doing business - No. 1 - Davao City
Infrastructure - No. 1 - Davao City
Dynamism of local economy - No. 1 - Makati City; No. 4 - Davao City
Quality of life - No. 1 - Mandaluyong City; No. 7 - Davao City
Responsiveness of local government - No. 1 - San Juan City; No. 3 - Davao City
Human resources & training - No. 1 - Marikina City; No. 7 - Davao City
Overall among the metro cities:
1. Davao City
2. Quezon City
3. Makati City
4. Manila City
5. Marikina City
6. Lapu-lapu City
7. Paranaque City
8. Muntinlupa City
9. Cebu City
10. Pasay City
Olongapo City topped the mid-sized cities while San Fernando, La Union was No. 1 among small cities.
Check the complete rankings here. (http://www.policy.aim.edu/downloads/PCCRP%202007/PCCRP%202007%20Summary%20of%20Results%20(90%20cities).pdf)
Noteworthy is Davao City’s improvement in two key drivers - Responsiveness of the local government - ranked No. 6 in 2005 to No. 3, and in Human resources and training - from No. 11 in 2005 to No. 7.
Kudos to the people of Davao City and its leadership led by Mayor Rody Duterte. Thank you too to the Philippine-Australian Human Resource Development Fund (PAHRDF) for responding to the city’s needs in improving HR development.

Davao to pursue using surface water
by Prix D Banzon
Davao City (5 July) -- The Davao City Water District is determined to pursue its plan of using surface water in its expansion program to supply potable water to the rest of the Davao City residents.
DCWD spokesperson Imelda Magsusi, in an interview said DCWD's existing water extracted from the ground has not reached all households especially those towards north.
This she said could be supplied once the Tamugan Surface Water Development (TSWD) will be materialized.
But she said the project still has to come up with a feasibility study and by this time the district has come up with a shortlist of contractors approved by the Board that will handled the study.
Considering that DCWD is a government entity, she said it has to pass through process including bidding.
"If we have our way we want the project to be completed soonest," she said.
However the TSWD is faced with a controversy with the entry of the Hedcor Hydropower Plant Project also in Tamugan.
Magsusi said Hedcor has applied for a a permit with the National Water Resources Board (NWRB) to operate their plant in the same area even as she said that DCWD in 1997 was issued by the same Board for the water project with specific locations.
In the event that NWRB will also issue permit with HEDCOR she said they will move on filing a case in court to address the issue.
"But DCWD remain firm in its stand of pursuing the project," she said.
The TSWD is a P1.3 billion project where fund sources would consider options on built and operate, loan (domestic or international) or implement it by phases, she said.
Among the major components of the project are the treatment plant, land acquisition, settlement for road right of way, infiltration gallery and pipes to traverse 60 kilometers from the source in Tamugan to Lasang. (PIA)

wow davao, you davao, why are you like that, you keep on making davaoenos proud of you and making us proud of ourselves...stop it (i mean stop ang pagpa humble2x)
but, why is it that davao ranked 7 sa quality of life, unbelievable...but what's important is, davao is the holder of the title.
DexterTexter July 5th, 2008, 05:40 PM Yep, I read about this somewhere. The Spaniards established base in Caraga, that's in Davao Oriental. I think the oldest catholic church in Mindanao still stands in Caraga.
DexterTexter July 5th, 2008, 05:41 PM Hala di ko pa na check ung 3D images ng Davao sa GE! I should try that now. :) Goys upload din kau ng panoramio pics of Davao. :)

henji July 6th, 2008, 04:45 AM Unsay effect sa existing SM mall sa ecoland after the completion of SM Lanang?
~JasoN~ July 6th, 2008, 04:54 AM ^^ wala naman siguro kasi ibang part siya ng city . IMHO .
henji July 6th, 2008, 05:13 AM ^^ ok, since this mall will compete head to head with new malls here in Davao.
dhawell July 6th, 2008, 05:47 AM Wow. until now im still speechless with SM's lanang project. grabe i cant believe it ay. alam mo yang feeling na its too good to be true? :D
anyway, who owns the vacant lot ba sa may ecoland-matina area. yung malapit sa mc arthur higway and Quimpo Blvd intersection. after sa matina baptist church going to sm before citi hardware. diba vast ang area and stagnant lang. basi naa pay gusto mag invest pwede pa didto. so calling on Rustan's or maski Hotel like Marriot, Peninsula, shangrila. pwede pa mo diha. hehehe. or kung another mall complex naman it would make davao the ultimate shopping destination na jud. hehehe. and if that happens nah, dli njud ko mka tulog. ever. hehehe. mag sige nlng ko shopping. hahaha. kat kat!

tung college mi, nag adto mi sa register of deeds and gaisano owner ana bai, dunno kung kinsa na karon
dhawell July 6th, 2008, 06:02 AM Ah, so kung gaisano ang owner. and knowing gaisano murag dli man kaayo sila risk takers when it comes to investments kay the way i see it naga hulat lang sila ug right time kung when jud mag invest. so murag dugay pa na kay ang south area kay pa kaayo busy like the northern part (bajada-lanang area).
henji July 6th, 2008, 06:37 AM Dili pa pud feasible for now since SM City Davao is kms away from that lot. Kung mapredict pud nila ang future traffic and passersby dihang dapita dili lang lang plying matina pud also diha sa may quimpo blvd. Pero dili pud impossible nga magset up sila diha ug dakong mall. By that time malls of Davao will be divided by zones. North and South Shopping Destination.
WawaY[625] July 6th, 2008, 06:37 AM yeah murag ana jud siguro, kay dugay na man na sa ilaha and the way i see it murag nag sobra na ang malls dire if mahuman ng Ayala-robinsons-SM
or basi jud diay gamay ang SM Davao noh? kay ang target jud sa SM is 1 sa north and 1 sa south..
henji July 6th, 2008, 06:44 AM ^^mao rag gamay gihapon nga SM ibutang diha since it will be catering the North Side of Davao.
Which one has greater market coverage North or South?
dhawell July 6th, 2008, 06:48 AM i think ang sa SM North mall kay dli jud kaayo dako kay ang target date of completion nila is 2009 diba for the mall ryt? so dali lang ang construction and i think dili pod sila mag buhat ug way na langawon ang SM south. basi ang ila lang i focus jud kay murag SM "City" a city in a city. so mag focus sila sa entertainment complex, hotel, BPO and office space, and condos that way SM lanang would be the place to shop, work, and live. it will directly compete with that of ayala. and sa area nila na mas dako pa sa vatican surely its a city within davao city. hehehe. wow. simple DaWow City jud ay
Davao City simply DaWow City!
henji July 6th, 2008, 06:57 AM What places pa ba have two SM Citys? i hope the press release will be out soon..
again it will be a mall with fenced lot. jok
im happy for the North Davao folks, since malls flock there.
