JG Summit gears up for expansion

JG Summit Holdings will continue the expansion of all its businesses, despite the rising cost of fuel and food inputs, which is now emerging as the single biggest challenge for the Gokongwei Group of Companies.

Company president Lance Gokongwei said second quarter earnings were not as robust as in the same period last year due to the booking of foreign exchange losses as a result of the weakening value of the peso against the dollar.

In general, however, on an operating basis, the group is doing reasonably well, he emphasized.

At the company’s recent shareholders’ meeting, the company’s board of directors declared a cash dividend of three centavos per share to all stockholders of record as of Aug. 29, 2008, payable on Sept. 24 this year.

JG Summit posted consolidated revenues of P22.1 billion during the first quarter of 2008, up 10.5 percent compared to the same period last year. Net income in the January-March 2008 period, however, declined with the weakening peso and mark-to-market losses. But core earnings increased 32.4 percent due to resilient airline profits and better income of its telecom unit.

Cebu Air, the operator of the Cebu Pacific (CEB) airline, reported a 58.2 percent increase in core earnings during the first quarter of 2008 to P544 million despite rising fuel costs and a weaker peso. Revenues rose 32.6 percent to P4.2 billion due to its continuous route expansion.

Gokongwei, who is also president of CEB, said they will continue to expand their route network and increase fleet size in the long term. “In the short term, we will have to manage the high fuel cost environment,” he pointed out.

Last year was an excellent year for CEB but this year will be tough, he said. Gokongwei revealed that the air carrier did quite well during the first five to six months of the year but losses might be registered during the second half of the year. “CEB’s overall performance will depend on jet fuel prices, which account for 60 percent of cost,” he said.
Four more new aircraft are expected to arrive this year, bringing to 25 the company’s fleet by yearend.

As part of cost management, CEB has reduced frequencies in some of its international destinations such as Taipei. Gokongwei estimated that around 25 percent of international flights have been redeployed for domestic destinations. The load factor for international operations is down to around 75 percent as against 84 percent last year.

But he emphasized that the seven-million passenger target this year will remain a fighting target. Last year, CEB carried 5.5 million passengers.
Meanwhile, food unit Universal Robina Corp. (URC) registered a 3.5-percent drop in core earnings as cost of inputs rose while inflation continued to affect consumer demand. URC sales, however, grew 18 percent to P10.86 billion during the first quarter.

URC has completed a number of acquisitions, including Nestle Water, Passi Sugar Central, and Granny Goose, and has successfully relaunched the C2 beverage brand in Vietnam.

“We will continue to expand our snack foods and beverage markets both domestically and internationally and grow through strategic investments and acquisitions,” Gokongwei added.

He noted that Thailand continues to be a star performer although the company is doing a serious push in Vietnam.

Property development arm Robinsons Land Corp. (RLC) posted a 12.2 percent rise in core income to P680 million despite a challenging demand environment and rising costs of construction.

Revenues during the first quarter of 2008 grew seven percent to P2.2 billion, sustained by strong growth in the office buildings and residential condominiums and commercial centers divisions.

Company officials said RLC will continue to expand its landbank and build new malls.

Telecommunications company Digitel meanwhile. increased its revenues 21.6 percent its revenues in the Jan-March 2008 period to P2.36 billion, driven again by continuing growth in the wireless segment. While net loss widened because of a weaker peso, core net loss declined due to improving wireless revenues and margins.

Gokongwei said prospects are better as subsidiary Digitel Mobile, which operates mobile phone service provider Sun Cellular, is now EBITDA-positive. As of the first quarter of this year, Sun Cellular registered a mobile subscriber base of 5.4 million.

The company president said Sun Cellular will continue improving its network coverage and provide unique fixed rate offerings. On the one hand, Digitel will aggressively shift into a variety of next-generation businesses and consumer-oriented broadband services. “We will continue to grow even larger this year and next year,” he stressed.

JG Summit Petrochemical Corp. posted a significant rise in revenues during the first quarter period to P2 billion from last year’s P566 million due to improved sales. Net loss in the first quarter dropped to P36 million from last year’s P166 million.

Gokongwei also reported that during the first quarter of this year, the holding company’s net debt to equity ratio was at 0.56 compared to 0.51 last year and 0.49 in the previous year. Company debt is down to P55.8 billion as of March 31, 2008 compared with P82.1 billion as of end-2007

Hedcor to present study to co-exist with DCWD

OFFICIALS OF Hedcor, Inc. will present a new study to the Davao City Water District (DCWD) showing that the two projects in Tamugan and Panigan rivers could actually co-exist.
Rene B. Ronquillo, president and chief operating officer of Hedcor, said their study showed that the hydropower plant will not affect the DCWD’s own project since the water firm could source out its requirements at elevation 325 or 375, saving six to seven kilometers of pipes in the process.
“We will be open 24-hours a day so that they could get the information that they need,” he said, adding that the study will be turned over to the DCWD today.
DCWD General Manager Rodora Gamboa said they have to look at the details of the study before making any comments about it.
Gamboa said part of their apprehension about the project is not only on the quality but even the volume of water the plant will provide for them.
“Can we be assured that they will give us the four cubic meters of water. What if they don’t release the needed water to us?” she said.
She said their objection to the plant is also based on their own studies so they have to scrutinize carefully whatever study Hedcor will present.
Ronquillo said they also want to fast track in building the project because aside from the problem on electricity shortage by 2011 there are other stakeholders who are dependent on it.
He said they already signed memorandum of agreements with four to five indigenous peoples organization in eight barangays that are covered by the project. When the plant starts operating, the Lumads will receive P2-3 million a year apart from the revenues that will go directly to the barangays and the P1.8 million rental on lands where the pipes would be placed.
Ronquillo said Hedcor will also construct bridges, roads and other support facilities in these communities.
Danilo Gumapac, Tawan-tawan barangay captain, said they are awaiting the project because they were promised work during the construction phase.
“We are looking for development if DCWD can give us more privileges than what Hedcor can offer then we will see,” he said in the vernacular.
He said they are also against the project of the water utility because the water from the river are already polluted by chemicals from the banana plantations.
Paul Barrete, barangay captain of Salaysay, said his constituents are waiting for the land rentals that will come from Hedcor. He said the government should just allow the plant since it would also pour taxes to the barangay and the city.
Teodora Amoy, barangay captain of Suawan, added she has not allowed plantations in her barangay in the past because it will affect the environment and the entry of Hedcor is their chance to also taste development.
Ronquillo said they have been favored by the people in the barangays because they have been working with them for two years now.
Based on the law, Hedcor needs to secure the approval of the Lumads before getting the environmental clearance certificate and before applying for the water permit. But to their dismay, he said, the Environmental Management Bureau asked for the water permit as a requisite for the clearance.
The EMB put on hold Hedcor’s environmental compliance certificate due to the complaint of DCWD to National Water Resources Utility Board. The bureau said the water utility had a permit on Tamugan River since 1997 and cited in its letter that the complaint should be resolved first before they could start processing the clearance. The board will have a committee hearing in the city on August 15 or the fourth committee hearing on the issue.
Councilor Pilar Braga and Councilor Leonardo Avila III who conducted the committee hearing on the issue yesterday said they are giving the two companies 10-15 days to talk among themselves before the joint committees on transportation and communication and environment and natural resources would craft their recommendations.
Atty. Eliseo Braganza, chair of DCWD board of directors, said they are willing to sit down with Hedcor and sort out their differences. However, Braganza stressed that the Hedcor should recognize that water is a primary need over electricity.

Ryan @ Eden Nature Park Hmmmm, so its been a year since I visited Davao for the first time and I’m just wrapping up my 2nd visit to this beautiful part of the world.. and I promised my good friend Oli that I would write something elegant, flowing and beautiful about my time here, so.. what to make of it all?

I live in possibly the most anti-social city this world has to offer, so the first thing that struck me when arriving from Manila was how friendly the Dabawenyos came across. It was probably just the wrong place at the wrong time but I never got a good vibe from Makati where my cousin and I stayed last year. In fact I’m convinced that this is the case because since then I’ve been back and thoroughly enjoyed my time in Manila. I’m also a firm believer that the company you keep and the friends that you make have a HUGE influence on how much you derive from a place. The beauty of any given place is redundant without people to enjoy it with. The reason my cousin and I wound up in davao was nothing more significant than me having a friend living here. Through her we met; a dive instructor, the owner of a popular davao beach resort, 2 local entertainers (through which we made our own social circle, including the creator of this very blog).

So what sets this place aside from Manila, Bangkok, Ko Phan Ang and Hong Kong, these all being other fantastic places that I’ve visited recently. Well I suppose what I really loved about Davao, both last year and this time around was the ease with which you can make friends here. Clearly the fact that english is spoken by everyone here helps but its the innate openness and warmth of the dabawenyo people which allowed us to build up a social circle so easily (and of course your fascination with our milky white skin and big noses!) I have had so much fun in Davao during my 2 visits here and i just want to list some of my highlights, in no particular order you understand..

Doing an introductory dive in paradise, you can see everything in these crystal clear waters.

Spending time on samal beaches, the beach resorts here are so glorious. I’m kinda dissapointed I didn’t spend more time tanning myself here, but alas those pesky mosquitoes would crucify me!

Cheap booooooooooze (british people like booze don’t ya know)

Riding on jeepenys that pump out ‘wild boys’ by Duran Duran (not durian durian, that is a whole different ball game, and one that i’m NOT getting involved in). Yeh i love the rebellious jeepneys, they make my day!

Initiating intimate relations with three gorgeous filipinas in a 24 hour window (this one was particularly fun for a filthy young man like I)

Making lifelong friends with a whole bunch of guys and gals.

Going to eden nature park and experiencing the skyrider.. oohhh and the fishing of course, fishing is a very english pastime. A lot of old men in the countryside do it to get some pleasant respite away from their wives.

The f*^#ing amazing variety of food on offer here - chicken bbq, space burger, chowking, lechon, adobo, mangosteen, donuts, iced tea omg jsjjid9p398u8943fq08qrpr802yr0[P9-29… WOW…… how was it for you??

And of course, the oppurtunity to go to the casino and play some good ol’ texas hold em. There may be only one thing that I like more than a cute filipina cooking me chicken adobo, and that’s rolled up Aces over Kings uuuuuuuhhhhh salivate salivate..

So there you have it, I could go a lot deeper but I wouldn’t want to put up too much crap on Oli’s blog and I’m sure you’re all bored to tears by now anywho. If you’re still reading then I thank you sincerely from the bottom of my.. bottom. If you’ve fallen asleep then ummmm bugger off hahaha yes you heard me, bugger right oofffft. I want to thank everyone who’s been friendly, lovely, warm, and sexy with me, I won’t name no names just in case the FBIs got a warrant out for you or summing, but thank you anyway, you special people know who you are.

I think the Business park will follow, after the establishment of the residential component. In his statement Ayala will undertake this project in Phases because it covers around 250- 300 hectares.

^^But time change specially when it comes to more great opportunities and ROI. We all know that rumored Ayala in CDO way back many years ago. First in Bonbon-Bayabas area then Bulua area (Floriendo lot) then Indahag (now the Alegria hills) and the latest is in Floriendo lot again but in more strategic location infront of Gaisano. In my opinion, Boniao family and the others who owns Indahag property offers Ayala to build its business park after the Bonbon-bayabas and Bulua area proposed Ayala project didn't materialized. But still Indahag area did'nt push thru. Maybe it didn't materialized dahil malayo sa city center at baka mapareho sa kapalaran ng SM and or another big opportunities came in. But luckily because a posh subdivision of Ayala Land took place. And hope that this is the beginning.

During that time, SM was negotiating the lot infront of Gaisano to be another mall or hypermat but lately didn't push thru because as per news said due to high cost of land. in my opinion again, the floriendos didn't sold it to SM because of the currently in talks with Ayala and after two months the news broke out that Ayala had partner Floriendo to build mall in Davao. In the other hand, the rumored first SM before in mindanao was in CDO but the reality is in Davao and after a year it became a reality here. Sana after Davao sa CDO naman ang Ayala magbuild ng mall likewise to SM. :cheers::cheers:

^^There's no finality in regards about Makro to convert it or remain as is. and also to the lot infront of Gaisano whether Ayala will build a mall there, let's wait for the time to come. Libre lang naman ang mangarap but I have the confidence that it will come soon. That's already a part of our (CDO) vision, and to fulfill that vision the city government and the business chamber are working harder. We have the confidence of our public officials and the rest of the people of CDO that's why all our vision are not just a mere fantasy. We're a just a visionary people living in the city of golden opportunities. And the mall in Alegria? who knows not now but in the next 50 years :D since if Ayala will push thru in the city proper. So we're not hyping here, we're just telling of what we gathered info from our valid sources. If things didn't push as what it said, well, no thanks and no hurts. We all know the reasons why and we all know what comes next. If there's a tragedy, go on. If you lose your first choice employer/job then go next. Why stick if you can do so. The opportunities are always there waiting to explore by you. :)

500 riders seen in 7th Flight of the Eagles

SOME 500 riders are expected to join the coming 7th Flight of the Eagles “Bike against Global Warming” Fun Bike this August 10 starting at the Magsaysay Park going to Malagos Garden in Calinan.
These riders from all ages will join the 40-kilometer bike activity hosted by the Davao City Water District, Watershed Management Council, Office of City Councilor Leo Avila and the Federation of Off Road Cycling Enthusiasts (FORCE) which proceeds will go to the Talomo Lipadas Watershed.
The fun ride will also have special prizes for the Fat Boys (80 kgs. minimum), Ladies and Youth (16 years-old and under) caterogies.
Registration is now ongoing pegged at P250 inclusive of t-shirt and meals.
Senator Pia Cayetano, DENR Undersecretary Ella Guanzon, actress Chin-Chin Gutierrez and singer-songwriter Popong Landero are expected join the participating riders during the awarding rites.
