DOT promotes business tour in DavNor and DavOr

By Mai Gevera

Davao City (27 June) -- The Department of Tourism has designed tour packages to promote the two booming provinces in the region: Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental.

The tour packages are intentionally pushed to increase the number of tourists by tapping the business sector and the opportunities it could offer to potential investors.

As the banana capital of the Philippines, Davao del Norte will maximize all its promotional campaigns bringing along the biggest investor-drawer.

More than 32,000 hectares of land are already productive with commercial and dollar earner Cavendish Banana. However, the business sector proves that there are still more lands that need more investors interested to join such lucrative industry.

Tagum, the capital city of the province, boasts of its Overland Transport Integrated Terminal where any traveler who may wish to go to anywhere in Davao del Norte or to the neighboring provinces could readily find all kinds of public utility vehicles.

The banana biz tour to Davao del Norte includes a site visit at the Pag-asa Farms in the town of Kapalong where visitors can take hold of the best orchid varieties and rare animal species.

Various factories will also be visited such as the Banana Flour Factory, Banana Chips Factory. Best of all, visitors could have the chance to see the operation of the three biggest banana exporters, which are the Tadeco, Marsman, and Lapanday companies.

Besides bananas, it’s also in this region where the coconut capital of the country is located – Davao Oriental.

Mati, the capital town, highly depends on coconut to boost its economy. Now, it’s opening its doors for interested investors who are willing to tap, maximize and benefit from the province’s biggest wonder – the coconut.

The Coco-Loco Biz Tour package includes a visit in a coconut plantation, a lunch at Menzi, one of the biggest fruit plantation in town where tourists could witness the indigenous Mandaya weaving.

The tour will proceed to the International Copra Export Factory in Mati as well as to the Coco- Coir Plantation in the town of San Isidro.

These tours can be arranged with Mati Tourism Office (087-8110459;087-8112372) and with Davao del Norte Provincial Tourism Office (084 – 2173340) for the Banana Biz Tour Package. (PIA)

City acquires new set of boxing ring facility

THE City Government has recently acquired a new boxing ring facility granted by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).

Luisito Tinagsa of the City Sports Office said the PSC purchased three boxing ring facilities from Thailand and distributed it to Manila for boxing tournaments in Luzon, Bacolod for Visayas, and Davao for Mindanao.

Tinagsa said the new set arrived two weeks ago.

Its first users will be amateur boxers in the city who will join in the Mano-A Mano boxing fight organized by ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation, slated June 28 at Rizal Park.

"It's high-tech. It's difficult to assemble without using a manual. This will be assembled this afternoon," Tinagsa said Monday.

According to Tinagsa, the new facility cost around P1.4 million.

"This kind of facility is used in national and international boxing fights. It is approved by the International Boxing Association," Tinagsa said.

Included in the set are platforms, foundations, ring ropes, corner posts, corner box and a stairway for the boxers. (BRQ)

City needs more garbage bins

THE city needs more garbage bins to fully implement its solid waste management program.

City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said Monday there are only a total of 20,000 garbage bins to cater to 245,000 households in the city.

These same bins are divided to two, biodegradable and non-biodegradable. A pair of garbage bins caters to six households.

"Of the 20,000 bins, only 10,000 are effective since the distribution is by pairs. It can only cover 60,000 households, there is a substantial shortage," Avisado said.

He, however, did not specify the number of garbage bins needed.

Avisado said they are waiting for the recommendation of the City Environment and Natural Resources Office on how to address the problem of lack of garbage bins.

"If possible, we want bigger bins, 440 and 600 liter bins," he said.

Should the city decide to purchase additional garbage bins, Avisado said, the city will have to shell out P100 to P110 million. One garbage bin costs P6,000.

Avisado added that if they will purchase additional bins, they also have to purchase additional compactor trucks.

"The compactors collect only twice a day. We will have to add to complement the additional bins," said Avisado.

But, he said the decision to add more garbage bins and compactor trucks depends to City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte.

"We will have to elevate the matter to the mayor for his final decision," he said. (BRQ)

Davao's Gabi to make ring return in VegasBy Charles Raymond A. Maxey

DAVAO City's Diosdado Gabi, who made a spirited but unsuccessful campaign last March to capture a world boxing crown, is set to make his ring return on August 10 at the Orleans Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

This information was relayed to Filipino journalists through an e-mail by Gabi's manager Mike Koncz from his home in Orange Country, California. Koncz said Gabi will be featured in a fight card headlined by World Boxing Council (WBC) junior flyweight champion Brian Viloria.

The card is being presented by Top Rank Promotions in cooperation with the Orleans Hotel and Casino.

National television coverage will be provided by Versus formally known as the "outdoor living network."

Top Rank recently entered into a multi-million dollar, 12-fight card agreement with Versus television.

According to Koncz, Gabi has been very anxious to return to the ring since his loss to Vic Darchinyan for the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight title early this year.

Koncz said it took Gabi some time to have another ring date due to a suspension that was imposed by the California State Athletic commission as a result of the eight-round technical knockout defeat.

"Top Rank and I have not agreed on an opponent, but the fight on August 10 will definitely be at 115 pounds. Gabi will now move up and campaign at the super flyweight division as he will be more comfortable with the added three pounds," Koncz said.

"Also, we believe fighting at 115 his knock-out ratio will increase. With his tremendous work ethic and determination we are very optimistic and confident that by the end of the year Gabi will again have the opportunity to fulfill his dream of becoming a world champion," he added.

Gabi has been staying with Koncz in Orange County since last year and is being trained by Freddie Roach, Manny Pacquiao's famed American trainer.

Investment Update:

Crew to Acquire New Gold Project in the Philippines
source (http://www.ccnmatthews.com/news/releases/show.jsp?action=showRelease&searchText=false&showText=all&actionFor=601279)

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM--(CCNMatthews - June 26, 2006) - Crew Gold Corporation ("Crew" or the "Company") (TSX:CRU) (OSE:CRU) (FWB:KNC) (OTCBB:CRUGF):

Agreement on new Gold property in Mindanao signed.

Crew is pleased to announce it has signed an option agreement with Plethora Mining Corporation of the Philippines to earn into the Tandic Gold Project in San Mariano Municipality, Compostela Valley Province in south eastern Mindanao, the Philippines. Under the terms of the agreement, Crew will acquire an option to earn an initial 50% of the property through expenditure of USD 1 million on exploration and development over a period not exceeding 5 years. Following the 50% earin-in, Crew can sole fund exploration, development and feasibility studies to earn up to 90% of the project.

The large concession area of approximately 10,500 ha is more than three times the area Crew and its associated partners hold in the Masara mine and represents a major growth potential for the Company in both gold and copper-gold. The area is largely uninhabited mountainous terrain is situated approximately 11 kms east northeast of Crew's Masara mine operations and adjacent to the Amacan Copper mine of North Davao Mining Corporation.

Geologically the prospect is part of the Masara Mineral Province where rich mineralization of epithermal gold-silver veins and porphyry copper-gold deposits related to Miocene to Pleistocene magmatism occur along the Philippine Fault System.

At least seven major vein systems have been identified and partly sampled within the property. The bulk of early work was conducted on two of the seven known vein systems: the Don Marcelo and Don Elpo vein complexes. Only minimal work has been undertaken on the other five systems. Intensive artisanal or small scale mining activities are seen along both these vein systems and in other locations within the area.

Previous work on the property indicates outcrop sampling with assay grades in the range of 1g/t Au to 11 g/t Au, with most data in the range of 2 to 5 g/t Au. The sampled vein materials are highly weathered, resulting in disintegration and wash out of the material to the creeks, where detrital quartz snd gold nuggets are found in sand bars and creek banks. Drilling has yet to be conducted in the area. Sampling from shallow trenches and artisanal workings has demonstrated that mineralized veins range from 0.5 meter to 13 meters width. Drilling has yet to be conducted in the area. The Company has not conducted work required to verify the quoted data and does not consider the previous assay information as being NI43-101 compliant.

The striking geological and structural similarities with the Apex/Masara vein systems nearby and the location of this property within one of the richest mineral provinces in the Philippines gives the Company high expectations that modern systematic exploration in this very large concession area will lead to new discoveries of commercial gold deposits.

Jan Vestrum, President & CEO of Crew commented, "The option to acquire a controlling position in the Tandic project is an important development and demonstrates the further delivery of our Company's strategy to consolidate a substantial area in the Masara district to deliver a long mine life through acquisition of high quality projects. We view the Masara district to be particularly promising for both gold and copper-gold production and a consolidation in the area will allow for major investments and prosperity for the region and substantial growth potential for Crew."

i want to hear these "silent" projects. davao being silent i think is not a positive approach. it would seem that the city is not upbeat and that theres nothing really great or at the least "good" happening around the city. too much silence is bad but too much noise like ***-***(you know where this place is, go figure!) is terrible. i think davao should also be more active and participative in promotions, summits and events....... show 'em what you've got!

WawaY[625]

If these projects were disclosed, they wouldnt be "silent" anymore! were happy with our city and as much as we'd like for it to have these great things happen here, we wouldnt trade our city for any othe place.

Fact is, Davao is one of the country's most economically important cities, and this so called silence wont change that overnight, and oher cities might be catching up economicaly (and thats ok, we dont put other cites down anyway and mind you, these cities still have a lot of catching up to do)

plus the fact that socio-economic wise, we are among the Philippines' best and security wise we are the best (with having the best pollice office, TF-Davao, 911, and our beloved mayor) is more than enough reason for us to hold our head up high and be proud that we are Davaoeños.not to mention the fact that people here are disciplined, and law abiding.

but to mention a few projects ive heard when i attended the 4th mindanao construction show (oh yes, davao is still the south's convention capital), the city govt. have these as priority projects:(total cost of 990M)

Central Park
Sports Complex at UP mindanao
drainage project (not just your run of the mill drainage project daw)
among others, i wasnt really listening as i was chit chatting with fellow guests :D

But yes, Davao should start promoting itslef to tourists and invenstors, it seems the city govt is relying too much on the private sector to do this for them. We dont see much of the "Invest in davao" programs of the past (or maybe the city is busy laying the groundworks such as infrastructure, peace and order, socio economic projects for investments and they just cant spread the resources too thin?
re: too much noise going on in ***-***, what was it about?( yup i figured it out :)) was it the war between festivals?

paulkrps
June 27th, 2006, 04:18 PM
i agree with that valium. but sometimes, too much noise can also end in a whimper. i remember so many years back some cities had so much noise in their boomtown this and boomtown that, but it ended in a dud. a noise with a well-grounded bang is what i prefer.

i agree that the city government should educate the public about the current developments taking place (perhaps, it would encourage more investors). davao this time has to be more aggressive in promoting itself. how i wish to see a broad approach (all media) exposure. what i would also like is a corporate approach to all of this (consistent visual identity/image and content) dili ng saksak sinagol. that will at least show them that the city is really serious in advertising itself.

same sentiments here.

or maybe the city is busy laying the groundworks such as infrastructure, peace and order, socio economic projects for investments and they just cant spread the resources too thin?

but isnt the city government doing this for too long already????? its think its time to diversify. reap what you sow.

it goes beyond festivals buddy! read their thread and THIS (http://www.dinagyang.com/component/option,com_smf/Itemid,73/) , its full of bitterness with the second capital and their neighboring city across the straight. to think that they have a LOT of catching up to do.

yes its time to diversify, with the central park and the sports complex and last january's center island beautification, i guess they are strating to.. so theyre almost done with phase 2 (socio-economic and infra) now they are atrting with pahse 3 (promotions, city beautification)

exactly!

please don't take things out of context, you should read why they seem bitter first before posting. not just a few lines here and there. entire religions are started from just a few verses. LOL

the competition was rigged. just like how a lot of things are done in the philippines. (don't tell me this never happens in the Philippines.) if you were present in ALIWAN, just like most of the people posting in that forum, other groups were more exciting to watch than the champion. if you read parts of our forum also, it's clear that Ilonggos love CEBU.

Dinagyang, Pintados robbed in Aliwan Festival

The results of last week's Aliwan Festival 2006 in Manila continued to be the hot topic among festival habitués not only in Western Visayas but as well as all over the country.

And most experts did not agree that defending champion Pintados de Pasi wound up only second runner-up or third overall to the new champion Sinulog Festival of Cebu City and first runner-up Dinagyang Festival of Iloilo City.

There were reports that the judges were allegedly "intimidated" by the presence of Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ace Durano who is a former congressman from Cebu and who allegedly secretly "lobbied" for Sinulog Festival to bag this year's overall championship from Pintados de Pasi or any other contingents for that matter.

As secretary of the DOT, Durano has the complete itinerary of festivals all over the world, including the world-famous Pasadena Parade in California and there were reports that the Philippines has been invited to perform in some international festivals this year.

Did Secretary Durano use his influence to dethrone Pintados de Pasi?

Many of those present during the competition of 28 festivals all over the country at the Quirino Grandstand swore the performance of Sinulog Festival was a repeat of their last year's choreography unlike the Pintados de Pasi and Dinagyang Festival, two groups from Panay island that enjoyed enormous financial support from their respective local government units (LGUs) and private sponsors, not to mention the all-out backing of their foundations.

This is not the first time that Secretary Durano has been accused of malfeasance in the performance of his duties and obligations as DOT chief.

Last year, he caused a furor among city officials here when the DOT committed a sin of omission by not including the Dinagyang Festival in the calendar of activities in its posters and campaign here and abroad.

The huge lapse even prompted the provincial board in Negros Oriental to declare Durano as persona non grata, an earthshaking event which was nearly repeated in Iloilo City had it not been for the leniency of Mayor Jerry P. Treñas who did not want to add fuel to the conflagration.

I know that everything that I will write here will now be water under the bridge, but there are lessons that must be learned from the recent Aliwan Festival.

But it is now difficult to file a protest because doing so might jeopardize our relationship with the prime festival mover Manila Broadcasting Company which has been diligently promoting the festival these past years sans substantial financial assistance from the government.

And besides, we have nothing to prove anymore as the audience believed the Ilonggo festival groups are the more artistic and creative, not to mention their alacrity and enthusiasm which was manifested when they introduced additional styles and techniques in running away with the runner-up plums.

We just hope that in next year's Aliwan Festival, Sec. Durano will be prudent enough to at least set aside his bias and watch out his body language so that people will not think that he is applying an arm-twisting tactic to favor a certain festival. Just a suggestion, no offense meant.

Maxey: Agdao market as model?
By Ram Maxey
Bar None

HAVEN'T you heard the good news? Our own Agdao public market has just won the first national "Huwarang Palengke 2006" competition. A cash award of P500,000 comes with the title of cleanest wet market in the country.

At first I wondered why it was the Department of Agriculture who conducted the contest and not the Department of Health, considering that the category on physical requirements, hygiene and sanitation was worth 50 percent in the evaluation. Adherence to consumer laws was pegged at 25 percent and price monitoring 25 percent for a total of 100 percent. But then agri products are the dominant stuff bought and sold there, so okay.

City Economic Enterprise officer-in-charge Francisco Vales Jr. was quoted in the local press as ecstatic over the win, adding that half of the P500,000 would be spent for repairs and other physical improvements of the sprawling complex while the other half will be apportioned among the members of the market vendors association.

Yesterday, while I was at the Agdao public market to reload my cell phone at one of the stalls, I decided to see for myself what makes the market tick, so to speak, as to deserve such an award -- a national one no less.

I walked into the main building along an alley separating the vegetable section from the fish section. Right away I realized why they also call it a "wet" market. The cement flooring was wet, having been splashed with water to wash away bits and morsels of fish and meat that invariably end up on the floor in the course of business.

Avoiding the wet section, I stopped at one stall selling all sorts of vegetables and ingredients that go with them. I noticed that a piece of cardboard about 15 inches high had been placed across the lower part of the narrow opening that served as a door of the stall. I asked what it was for and was told that it was there to bar entry of rats.

"Rats?" I was incredulous. At that instant one such denizen scampered across the aisle. "Are there many of them around here? Don't you people have cats to go after the rats?" The two salesgirls laughed, one of them saying, "The cats around here are well fed, they leave the rats alone." A sort of modus vivendi in the marketplace.

When I told them about the national award their market had just won and the P500,000 that goes with it, they pointed to some parts of the iron roofing where shafts of sunlight came through some holes. "One time it rained so hard we had to call the ABS-CBN people to send a crew over here so they could train their camera on the leaking roof. But nobody came."

I walked out of the building to the other side where I used to see goats and pigs tied to posts along the sidewalk before being led elsewhere for slaughter. It was not just the sight of the animals there that was annoying. It was the smell of you-know-what that had assailed my nostrils each time I passed by.

Well, what do you know? Not an animal in sight this time. The market administrator may have noticed (and smelled) that sorry portion of the market and knew what to do before the judges came for evaluation. Correct move at the right time. Worth half-a-million pesos, no less. Bravo.

Council committee sets Friday hearing for P363M budget

THE P363.6-million Supplemental Budget 1 is now with the City Council committee on finance, ways, means and appropriations after it was calendared for first reading in Tuesday's regular council session.

Councilor Bonifacio E. Militar, chair of the committee on finance, said the committee is set to conduct a committee hearing at 9:30 a.m. Friday.

The budget, amounting to P363,618,914.89, is intended to augment the City Government's general fund, development fund, and economic enterprises particularly the operation of markets and slaughterhouses.

City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said a total of P346,476,914.56 will be appropriated for general fund and P28,753,298.97 for development fund.

Avisado said SB 1 is sourced from the P44,080,614.5 million 2005 surplus, P5,387,500 million unappropriated balance, P708,800 reverted fund and estimated revenue out of the amended revenue tax code which is P296,300 million.

"The P5.3 million unappropriated balance comes from the annual budget of the Traffic Management Center which was earlier cut down," Avisado said.

When asked where the bulk of SB 1 is appropriated, Avisado said the whole budget is properly and evenly distributed to help implement the city's projects.

Avisado said a total of P57,778,000 will be appropriated for the peace and order program of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte, P1,800 million for Barangays Aliongto and Hizon, being newly recognized barangays, and P15 million for the city's crisis intervention program.

Avisado said there is a total funding request of P1.2 billion for the city's project and services that was, however, it was cut down to only P363,618,914.89 due to lack of funds.

Ledesma:To Beijing and back

By Jun Ledesma
Sunburst

I JUST came back from a very brief sojourn in Beijing, courtesy of Philippine Airlines and the Tour Operators of Davao. Before that my knowledge of China was what little memory I absorbed from Pearl S. Buck "The Good Earth," my imagery of communal households, the cultural revolution and chairman Mao, the tragic event at Tiananmen Square and other current events to include the unprecedented 10 percent economic growth of what was once the bedrock of communism.

I still cannot reconcile my vicarious and admittedly inadequate knowledge of China's past and present with the stark pulsating reality of the country where, during the prime of my life, travel is banned, and if you dare venture to defy you will likely be consigned to confinement or marked as communist sympathizer of sort.

Beijing today is an incredible contrast of what I though it was. Here evolves a modern city from lethargy of an irrelevant communist ideology. Once the leadership realized that their principles are no longer consistent and compatible with global economy, the made a go at capitalist system and never looked back after that.

I have never been to Beijing before but I have been to several cities in the west and in Asia too. Here, in what was once a forbidden city, are hundreds of high-rise condominiums and corporate edifices. And, as if these are not enough, constructions of more massive buildings, expressways and skyways have not ceased.

Ever since China opened its doors to foreign investors billions of dollars poured into this land, which, not too long ago was perceived to be a threat, an enemy. China's population is about 1.3 billion. In extremely rural China, many of them still live in communes.

But if one considers the frenetic pace of development a decade is long enough for those isolated to be free from the bondage of the soil. The radical shift to a democratic system has given its people an impetus to strive to work because now, what they earn is theirs.

Industrialization makes Beijing bursting on the seams. Huge factory buildings have crept into the farms in the periphery of the city. The old tenement houses and communes had been demolished and have given way to factories. There is no need for farmers to worry. They are assured of new dwellings and for as long as they are willing to work they can earn more than what they used to receive from the state subsidy before.

Chinese laborers find satisfaction and comfort even as they earn only as much as P6,000 equivalent in wages. A taxi driver leases his cab from the government for four years and virtually owns the unit. If he is lazy he can only earn so much.

But there are too many tourists in Beijing that an industrious driver won't miss the opportunity to earn more. There is no car barn time for them. If there is something they wish to have is the ability to communicate in English. Even that, they are learning fast.

Home from Beijing, and taxiing to a hotel in Makati for an overnight stay, the radio blares nothing but endless political stunts. We crossed a small open canal in Pasay road. I can barely see the waterway with the mass putrid garbage obviously coming from the makeshift talipapas that lined the banks. Beside the street are small tianges and vulcanizing shops manned by naked-to-the-waist fat bellied aging men. Children with tattered clothes occasionally run across the narrow street. It's the same sight I see in decades.

And the radio in the cab airs the same political wrangling and crime statistics. Ah, how pathetic we are. We have been free and yet we refused to take off from abject poverty. But that is Metro Manila. Finally back in Davao City, I felt secured and contented.

For ours is of incomparable grandeur. We may not have the modern edifices but I assure you we can have all the food and fruits we want to eat, fresh and cheap. We do not have temples and palaces but we have our mountain and beach resorts. We have modestly big malls to shop.

Just a bit more of industry and we are well provided. Ah, Davao City... nothing compares.

BTW, if you plan to visit Biejing, it is best that you have a guide who can take you to places you desire to go. I have this friend, David Chang who speaks good English and very knowledgeable of China's history and places in Beijing. Let me know so I can help you touch base with him.

My email address is scledesmajr@yahoo.com. You can also get in touch with Wanda Teo of Mt. Apo Travels. Some time later, I am coming up with a feature article on Beijing and you will find more names of Davao-based tour operators who can help you. PAL can take you all the way from Davao to Beijing.

Davao traders embark on trade mission in Taiwan

AT LEAST 10 local businessmen and government agency representatives are now in Taiwan to promote the wealth and business opportunities in Southern Mindanao.

The trade mission, slated on June 18 to 23, is also aimed at looking into possible business links with Taiwan.

The event is organized by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao, in response to the invitation of the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (Meco) based in Taiwan.

Series of business dialogues with Taiwan's manufacturers of food processing equipments and machineries will be made during the trade mission.

Moreover, plant visits to food processing establishments will also be part of the participants' itinerary.

Back-to-back with the trade mission will be the Taiwan International Food Show, Taipei Food Technology Fair, and Taipei Packaging and Machinery Fair, which will be held at the World Trade Center in Taipei on June 21 to 24.

DTI regional director for Southern Mindanao Merly M. Cruz said the trade mission will help the participants to get ideas and know-how on the latest technology on food processing and packaging that are available in Taiwan.

"This will be a very good venue for the local enterprises to establish market contacts with their counterparts from the said country. This will also be a huge opportunity for them to be exposed to Taiwan's new packaging and food processing technologies plus the chance to get business partners there," she said.

Cruz said Mindanao food products have a great edge to penetrate the Taiwan market. These products include the fresh and processed fruits and vegetables, confectionery, beverages, and marine products.

"These goods are widely patronized in Taiwan and if our local entrepreneurs can establish links with them, there will surely be a sound movement of goods and services between the two countries," Cruz said.

Quality agents given priority by call center operators

CALL center operators in Davao City are giving more priority on the quality of call center agents, whom they hire to satisfy the needs of their clients who are mostly based in the US.

Davao City director Teolulo Pasawa of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Southern Mindanao said operators do not want to lower their standard despite the demand because this is one way of protecting the interest of the investors.

"There is a great demand for call center agents but operators are not bent on lowering the standard just to fill the need," he said.

"If they start to lower the standard there will come a time that investors may fold up and look for other areas where their demand could be met," he added.

Pasawa confirmed that there's a big demand for call center agents, in fact he said the G-Com Ltd, the only large call center operator in Davao City that could expand up to 200 seats, currently needs 400 agents.

By December this year, the company would also need another 500 call center agents.

He said that although many applicants are trying to seek employment in call centers, the industry rate of absorption is low saying that for every 100 applicants only five percent are hired.

"What is good with the city is that there are already schools offering courses on language proficiency where students are taught conversational English, a tool that is needed by call center agents," he said.

Aside from G-Com, four other small size call center operators with about 20 seats are located in the city, he said.

Meanwhile, he said there are two existing schools offering medical transcription, the Davao First Transcription Medical Center and the MTC Academy.

He said this is also a welcome development because with the trend now of students taking up courses related to medical field, in the future their other options could be in the field of medical transcription.

The demand, he said is also big because all medical practitioners in America whether in hospitals or clinics as mandated by law effective April 13, 2003 are required to come up with a written patients-physician transactions or diagnosis that will be presented by the patient for claim of health insurance.

He said there are demands of this kind of job in Australia and Canada but our market is that of the United States.

He said that for an 8-hour transcription work, one is estimated to earn a monthly income of P60,000.

But the medical field is only one aspect because there are allied work such in business and legal and a lot more, he said.

DTI as lead agency of ICT in the industry cluster consider it (ICT) as one of the drivers' in the economy of Davao City and the region.

Culinary fest to boost city's food and beverage industry

By Barbara Carla R. Quiero

OFFICIALS of the Davao Tourism Association (Data) are confident that the 6th Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF) slated on October 6 to 8 at the NCCC Convention Center will promote Davao City not only as a tourism destination, but also as a city with the best kinds of food in the world as well.

Data president Art Boncato said MCF will help improve the food and beverage industry into global standards with its friendly culinary competitions and a majority of the judges coming from the food and beverage industry in Manila.

The MCF will be staged back to back with the 3rd International Hotel, Restaurant and Home Expo with a theme "A Taste of Christmas... A Celebration of the Season."

"There's a global service we are looking into and that is the kind of level we want to achieve that when visitors visit Davao, the food and beverage industry is incomparable to the world," Boncato said during Wednesday's Club 888 forum at the Marco Polo Hotel.

The competitions are divided into two categories -- the professional and student category.

Boncato cited events under the professional category that includes the Nestle‚ Food Services Market Basket, table setting, bartending, cake decoration, baking wedding cakes, fruit and vegetable carving and many others.

Events under the student category include bartending, table skirting, cake decoration, centerpiece arrangement, napkin folding and the 3S competition (soup/salad/sandwich).

The professional category will be participated by seasoned chefs from well-known hotels and restaurants in Mindanao while the student's category is for culinary students from schools in Mindanao.

Meanwhile, the International Hotel, Restaurant and Home Expo will showcase products and services for homes and offices.

During Wednesday's forum, NCCC mall and Data officials signed a memorandum of agreement making NCCC mall its only platinum sponsor for the free use of its convention center during the event

Dabawenyo filmmakers set to make 1st full-length film

LOCAL filmmakers are set to produce the first-ever full-length film showcasing Davao culture and placing the Mandaya lumads at the limelight.

The film to be entitled "Huling Balyan ng Buhi" will be directed by Dabawenyo Sherad Anthony Sanchez, in collaboration with Alchemy of Vision and Light Productions, a Davao-based production firm owned by Raphael Cañedo.

Cañedo said the film will represent Davao City in the nationwide Cinema One Originals Competition.

"This will be the first full-length film to be produced, shot and made by Dabawenyos. We will start filming by mid-July until mid-August. As of today, we are still casting," Cañedo said during the Club 888 media forum at the Marco Polo Wednesday.

Cañedo said the idea sprung from Sanchez, a film student who has participated in different international film events.

"We would like to prove that we can still come up or produce a film even with a small budget," said Sanchez, adding that people absorb more messages in film than in any form of productions such as documentaries.

According to Cañedo, the whole production will cost P2.4 million.

Cañedo said they were given a grant worth P700,00 from Cinema One, which will be used to jump start the film production.

"We are still in need of P1.7 million to complete the project," he said.

Cañedo appealed to all sectors to help in financing the production of the film. (BRQ)

Wanderlust: You’ve got meal!
By Ian Ray C. Garcia Published : 2006-06-28

Lunch is probably one meal that most people – especially students and office workers – usually take out of the confines of their homes. Perhaps ten years ago, it was practical for one to go home for lunch. Today, considering the messy noontime traffic and the rising jeepney fare, dining out is, no doubt, the most sensible thing to do.

Last week, I told my good friend and food-bingeing partner Portia Abanilla (we fondly call each other “Sweetie”, our term of endearment) about Debbie Uy, our fellow Marisian’s new resto called Inbox located along J.P Laurel Avenue, and the rave about their mouthwatering pork ribs.

Food connoisseurs that we are (nah, we just love to stuff our guts with food to no end), we decided to check out the place and see if there was anything new and tasty for us to devour.

Located at the new commercial complex right across the SSS building in Bajada, this charming, pastel-colored food joint serves lunch, dinner and snacks made especially for those on a budget.

Don’t be deceived though. Being budget-priced doesn’t mean budget-sized. Besides, we’re in Davao, home of the P99.00 buffets. Thus, expect above-average servings of your favorite Pinoy dishes at Inbox.

We both ordered their beef ribs, of course. An order of this tender, succulent and huge chunk of rib served with Java rice and buttered veggies costs only P85.00. Very highly recommended.

From their “Box Office Hits”, one can have a choice of barbecue pork ribs, fish and cheese, crispy chicken steak, beefsteak, caramelized pork, lengua, and breaded pork chops. The least expensive (none exceeds P90.00 though) from the list is their chicken meal which only costs P45.00 and is also served with Java rice and buttered veggies.

Then there’s their “Pinoy Box”, a selection of everyday breakfast delights such as tapsilog, tocilog, daingsilog, longsilog, spamsilog, cornsilog and hotsilog, served with garlic rice and (sunny side up or scrambled) eggs for as low as P30.00 per order.

Just add P25.00 and you can have a simmering helping of Molo soup from their “Soup Box” items. If Molo’s not your thing, they also have balbacua, chicken mami, and batchoy for a couple of pesos more. Not bad at all.

If you’re just there for a quick snack stop, their sandwiches (chicken burger, tuna cheese melt, egg and cheese, and spam and cheese) as well as traditional pancit canton, luglug, halo-halo, sago’t gulaman, turon surprise and Pinoy-style spaghetti will surely help fill and satiate your tummies. Prices range from P12.00 to P35.00 an order.

During these trying times, it helps to know some restaurateurs still have the heart to serve food that is truly worth every hard-earned centavo. For this, Inbox deserves two thumbs up from us!

Well, we haven’t actually tried everything on the menu yet. But with this slate of scrumptious and inexpensive meals, there’s no reason why Portia and I can’t do another lunch or a dinner date at Inbox. Perhaps, later tonight after a working out at the gym. Uh-oh…

DAVAO CITY — Bayantel has announced that it is expanding its newest phone service project in the city.

Bayantel executives presented the company’s wireless landline service called Span to local officials led by Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan at the City Hall last Friday.

Span, according to Bayantel, is basically a wireless phone about the same size as a regular mobile phone that is capable of making a call to any landline. The service “aims to deliver the key benefits of landline and wireless services in a single package,” according to Bayantel. A user can make unlimited landline calls inside or outside his home.

Initially, the company will provide the product in the areas from Sasa to Poblacion to Matina. Later, services will be expanded to Buhangin, Upper Matina and Toril.

Tunde Fafunwa, chief executive consultant of Bayantel, announced that Davao City is the fourth area in the country where they have introduced such service. The other areas are General Santos, Tacloban and in the southern areas of Metro Manila.

Bonguyan was pleased with the company’s decision to invest in Davao. “It is only appropriate that Davao improves its telecommunication facilities,” he said. He also considers the product as something that will “assist the economic capability of the region.”

Mars Santos, Bayantel’s provincial marketing head, said they introduced the product based on a study that indicated that 85 percent of calls made from mobile phones are to landlines within the locality.

Activation fee for Span is 2,200 pesos; monthly rate of 599 pesos.

Lia ‘re-invented’ in Colombia for Miss U tilt

FUNFARE By Ricardo F. Lo
The Philippine Star 06/29/2006

Like her predecessors, 2006 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Lia Andrea Ramos underwent a crash training (in poise, etc.) under Colombian pageant guru Alfredo Barazza, a personal friend of Bb. Pilipinas Charities, Inc. head Madame Stella Marquez-Araneta (who hails from Colombia; the first ever Miss International, remember?).

"The training will definitely boost my morale and self-confidence," Lia told Funfare’s "beauty experts" Felix Manuel, Joey Cezeare, Gery Yumping and Francis Calubaquib before she left for Colombia last June 11. "It will add to the training I had under former Bb. Pilipinas winners and my Dale Carnegie mentors."

Lia should be back by now, set to fly to Los Angeles where the 55th Miss Universe contest will be held on July 23 at the Shrine Auditorium, ready to face the more than 80 other candidates from around the world. It’s the first time for the pageant to be held on US soil since 1998 when it was staged in Honolulu.

"We spent the last eight years taking the show around the world," the "beauty experts" quoted Paula Shugart of the Miss U Organization as saying. "Now it is our chance to return to the US and show all of our international contestants, along with their friends and families, one of the greatest cities in the world."

A UP graduate, Lia should feel right at home in L.A. because that’s where her parents, Ferdinand Ramos (a finance manager) of Davao and the former Rosalia Aquino (a registered nurse) of Cagayan, are based, along with two of Lia’s three younger siblings.

"I’ll feel comfortable in L.A.," said Lia, "and the expected support from our kababayan not only in L.A. but all over the US will be a great morale booster."

The "beauty experts" noted that Lia, 25, is the eldest Bb. Pilipinas to ever compete in the Miss U pageant, the first beauty from Davao to win the Bb. Pilipinas-Universe title (Nelia Sancho, also from Davao, was first runner-up to Gloria Diaz in 1969; she won as Queen of the Pacific in 1971) and the first from Mindanao to represent the country in the Miss U pageant (1968 Bb. Pilipinas-Universe Charina Zaragoza represented Manila in that year’s Bb. Pilipinas contest, although her parents are from Zamboanga). Lia was a semi-finalist in the 2001 search for Global Queen.

A harmonious intercultural interchange

By ANGELO G. GARCIA

The dictionary defines culture as the body of customary beliefs, social forms and material traits constituting a distinct complex of traditions of a racial, religious or social group. Given this meaning, it can be said that culture is the thing that defines a person or a group of people and what makes everyone different.

As humans may be different from one another, there is one thing that binds these so-called most intelligent creatures on the planet – being human. This can be seen with the harmonious relationships that they build regardless of cultural differences, despite the barriers that people encounter.

Realizing the need for cultural interaction between the youth of the world, the British Council created the Global Xchange Programme (GXP), a joint project with Community Service Volunteers (CSV), VSO Bahaginan, and VSO Philippines.

The GXP is a six-month project that gives opportunities to young people from the United Kingdom and from different countries, including the Philippines, to become advocates of peace and volunteerism.

Exams Manager David Hopkinson (left),
GXP Project Supervisor Ana Dizon
(second from left), British Council
Programme Officer Digi Castillo (bottom,

Council Education and Governance
Nannette Mercado (right).

This year’s batch, team 52, the Davao-Bradford exchange is composed of 18 young enthusiastic volunteers, nine from the United Kingdom and nine from the Philippines. The program is divided in to two phases, a three-month stay in Davao and another three-month stay in Bradford.

"This program aims to promote UK ideas and values, and vice versa," says British Council Country Exams Manager David Hopkinson.

"The objective of the program is to bring people together and experience each other’s culture," he adds.

A CLUSTER OF HELPING HANDS

With the first phase or the Davao phase of the program, the volunteers faced their challenges as they were assigned with their corresponding work placements.

The GXP volunteers stayed in the three host communities of Davao – Catalunan Pequeño, Marilog and Sirawan.

The main goal of the program is to promote peace and development in the area. Adding to the experience, each volunteer worked with a partner through the whole phase – a pair consists of one UK and one Filipino – in overcoming the initial task of getting to know one another, culture and all.

The participants were given responsibilities in their areas, dividing the group of pairs in the three host communities. One of the work placements is the Alternate Forum for Research in Mindanao (AFRIM) a livelihood development project for Catalunan Pequeño. Another is the VSO Peace Mindanao advocacy project and the youth work Ma’al Jama’ah Development Foundation (MDFI) in the Sirawan area. For the Marilog area the volunteers assisted Assisi Development Foundation (ADF) for their peace and development efforts.

They also got their hands dirty helping to renovate the Catalunan Pequeño pre-school classroom while the others picked up the shovel and started building a house in the Gawad Kalinga project. The volunteers’ leadership, creativity and organizational skills were put to the test with the Educational Activity Days (EADs). This gave them the chance to organize events and activities for the youth in relation with this year’s theme.

These are just some of the many work placements and activities that the volunteers labored on and successfully accomplished. After the Davao phase, facing yet the next challenge in Bradford, UK. Somewhat similar to Davao, Bradford is a city with a lot of conflicts due to race segregation and religion divide.

BICULTURAL UNANIMITY

After their three-month stay in Davao and the grueling tasks they had undergone, the first half of the program emerged as a life-changing experience especially for UK volunteers, since its their first time here in the country.

"I think with any program like this, obviously there are challenges. We can now say that we met our challenges and overcame them. Also, the challenges are not only personal, adapting to a new culture and things that you have to overcome," says UK volunteer Chloe Salisbury.

BUILD-A-HOUSE . GXP volunteers at the
Gawad Kalinga Youth Build Project in
Brgy. Mahayag, Tibungco District.

"Well, the lesson that we hear from most of the participants, it’s like six years in six months. It’s a six-month program but the learning and the challenges that you will encounter is worth six years of your life," says Filipino volunteer Rhea Alba.

"The program is really very packed and intense. It’s been a life changing experience for most of us but it’s very challenging and yet so much fun," she adds.

For the volunteers, the activities of the program taught them more than just lending a helping hand to the communities of Davao. For them, the experience of carrying out an activity with a complete stranger is a challenge and learning in itself.

"One of the cultural learning is to be with someone from another culture 24/7. After just three days of knowing each other, you learn to adapt to the culture of that person. You learn a lot that way because you’re working together," Filipino volunteer Hazel Galang says.

Comparing one’s own culture to the other can be a realization. To UK volunteer Majella Pua, the difference can easily be spotted in the basic unit of the society, the family.

"I was born in England but my parents came from Indian/South African background. I noticed a lot of similarities in the Filipino culture and an Indian culture but then I have mix of British culture as well. In terms of social respect within the family, there are a lot of family values. I mean you have that in Britain as well but here it’s much more stronger. In UK, you have two to three children but I see families with thirteen to fourteen children living in a house the size of my bedroom," she relates.

"People here appreciate what they have.In England, you want more, a bigger car a bigger house. That’s what value is. In the Philippines it has nothing to do with that, its about respecting and valuing your family and your community. People work very hard in the Philippines to make a living," she adds.

Although learning a new culture will take slow steps before reaching what can be said a true sense of understanding, these volunteers did just that in a short period of time.

"We tend to focus on our differences rather than on our similarities because those are the things that we initially noticed and continued to recognize as we got know each other more," says UK volunteer Becky Morrison.

"We shared the effect of what we’re seeing together as a team. We’re both in an area that we’re not used to. We’re put in different situations and we shared that together. Through it all we became closer as we created more similarities and the way we learned to deal with it. Now, we’re learning about the partnership that we can make and establish through the contrast and the similarities," she says.

Upgraded Davao City International Airport Is Ready for More Passengers and Bigger Aircraft
By Rita Festin - ADB National Officer

Photo Essay (http://www.adb.org/Documents/Photos/PHI/Davao-Airport/default.asp)

WITH AIR transportation crucial to economic and social connectivity in the Philippine archipelago, the new $128 million state-of-the-art international airport in this city is a welcome development. It is now fully operational and is raring to take in more passengers and bigger aircraft.

With ADB financing, the Davao airport in Mindanao has been upgraded and expanded to provide reliable and safe all-weather operations that meet international standards and remove infrastructure bottlenecks which were constraining the growth of domestic and international air services. It will also enhance Davao’s access to nearby markets and improve the overall economic prospects of the Southern Philippines, and could be considered one vital link for the intermodal transport network essential for this area.

Last year, actual passenger volume already surpassed one million domestic passengers flown in by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Asian Spirit out of 14 daily local flights. International passengers to and from Manado and Singapore reached almost 25,000. But Davao’s spacious and modern terminal building is designed to accommodate much more, and can easily accommodate up to twice its designed minimum passenger capacity of one million passengers.

The old airport terminal accommodated less than one million passengers in its last year of operation. It did not attract international flights and the city therefore fell short of its strategic role in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The passenger terminal had exceeded its capacity and the instrument landing system was not usable for precision approaches and landings. As a result, international flights did not fly to and from Davao, and international passengers heading for or leaving Davao were forced to use Manila as a transfer point.

Today, its present daily passenger volume is roughly 1,500, with the early morning peak hour servicing the bulk of that number. The succeeding flights do not have as much passenger traffic. But even at its peak, the airport can handle the steady inflow of passengers with its 14 domestic and 14 international check-in counters, almost double than its previous number of counters. The Check-in counters are equipped with electronic weighing scales and conveyors and its baggage handling system is also computerized.

The upgraded airport was funded through a loan from ADB, approved in 1994, which provided $41 million while the European Investment Bank provided $23 million. The original cost of the project was $105 million but due to foreign exchange escalation costs, the Asian financial crisis, and land acquisition costs, total cost of the Project reached $128 million.

The airport, officially named Francisco Bangoy International Airport, opened on 2 December 2003. The 209-hectare airport development for both airside and landside civil works was constructed in four years’ time. The airport upgrading consisted of runway extension of 500 meters, achieving a usable take-off length of 3,000 meters that could now accommodate currently operated wide-body aircraft of major airlines, even 747s. The installation of a new landing instrumentation system (ILS) for both Runways 05 and 23 upgraded its compliance to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) operating category - Precision Approach Category 1, similar to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It can accommodate 8 to 10 aircraft landings per hour, depending on the size, and has the equivalent 8 gate holding areas for those aircraft.
“The Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is considered the most advanced here in the Philippines, even more sophisticated than NAIA’s,” boasts assistant airport manager Joey Saddam who was then the project manager of the airport construction.

The project also covers the construction of a new Malay architecture-inspired terminal building which cost P1 billion and is four times bigger than the old airport terminal. It is highly computerized, more secure, and has more commercial spaces for concessionaires at approximately 9,000 sq. m. It has four new units of boarding bridges for passengers. Airport Manager Frederick San Felix considers their security system quite strict. Baggage is regularly screened three times prior to passenger check-in/boarding. “It’s better that you know that all the baggages have been thoroughly checked… for your own protection,” he stresses.

Besides the main terminal building, there are also new support facilities like the Administration Building, the Central Plant Building, Airfield Maintenance Building, and Fire/Crash/Rescue Building. It has a 688-slot car parking area and 4 slots for shuttle buses. It has a 3-megawatt standby power generator.

The Energy Management Control System for the centralized air conditioning system, electrical and lights system, is now located in just one room. Its Access Control System ensures that not all airport personnel have access to all areas of the airport such that certain cards can only enter selected doors and everybody entering them is registered.

It also has a Flight Information Display System and Closed Circuit Television System complementing the terminal’s security system. The Cargo Terminal Building covers almost 5,580 sq. meters and can handle up to 84,600 tons a year. In 2005, actual cargo volume was almost 44,000 tons.

With such modern facilities, the Davao City airport officials feel they can justify their proposed five-fold increase in terminal fees from P40 to P200 per passenger, the same as the fee being charged in Manila and Cebu airports. Rentals are also proposed to be increased to raise the airport’s revenues, which only grossed almost P120 million in 2005, for its future sustainability.

With a modern international airport in place, it is hoped that the vast economic potentials of Mindanao will finally be unlocked and optimized to the fullest after decades-long peace and order problems and poverty concerns.

MtApo... nice night is something we say when we mean good night and wishing you a good day to come...kind of...so you do not think I am obscene or anything.. :D ..hard to know what cultural differences and language differences can create in peculiar circumstances if not explaining. Like Konsehal said in this thread previously "it is very important that the preciever understand what you say or mean, or it can be devestating."..something like this he did say...... :)

MY friend, I am so carefull with uv rays and with my pale skin is dangerous if not carefull I know, the grassland here, I do not walk in now after the last thick attac...promise!! :)

You also take care MtApo and work with moderation if you can, or you can stress yourself out :ohno:

Even if a hard tomorrow I wish you a good day MtApo and the "special" people you work together with will enjoy your sense of humour and nice care!:wink2:

Bike event slated July 9

THE 1st Sikad-Sikad sa IGACOS Mountain Bike Fun Ride Event will kick off July 9 at the Jaltan Family Beach Resort in Limao, Samal District.

This was bared by organizer Samahang Siklista Kooperatiba ng Dabaw (Ssikad) chair Salvador Paholio, Jr. to members of the Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) at the Tower Inn Thursday.

He said in the vernacular, "We are holding the fun ride event for the first time although we have staged an event during the Araw ng Limao before. We want to help the community form their own group."

The 20-kilometer bikefest, according to him, will have raffle prizes at stake for all participants.

Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) city administrator Cleto "Jun-Jun" Gales, who is also a cyclist, is also expected to joint the event supported by Emperador Brandy.

It is co-organized by Sikad and Barangay Council of Limao, Samal District of IGACOS in coordination with the city government of IGACOS, Davao City Sports Council, Inc and Karancho-Samal Chapter.

Entry fee is P100 inclusive of lunch pack and raffle prizes. (MLSA)

Wanderlust: Painting the town blue
By Ian Ray C. Garcia Published : 2006-06-29

Some of us want to party with the blare of loud music (if it is called music, or is my age just showing?). Some of us just want a peaceful, quiet burrow where one can easily converse with friends while enjoying smooth, soothing tunes. Like, you know, just letting time fly and basking in the moment.

Well, if you prefer the latter, Blue Room is surely the perfect place for you, a music club that doubles as a meeting place of friends and business associates. Located at the ground floor of The Apo View Hotel, the bar can comfortably accommodate up to 80 persons and serves an array of select liqueurs and spirits prepared by their award-winning bartenders.

Blue Room also showcases the metro’s premier pop and jazz performers. Its predecessor, Pag-Asa Bar, was once the training ground of popular Davaoeno artists, such as the famous pop group Freestyle before they hit the road to success.

Night after night, Blue Room entertains its guests with easy-listening numbers from J&J Band (Mondays and Tuesdays), Souled Out (Wednesdays and Thursdays), Take 4 (Fridays), Platinum Band (Saturdays), and Jen & Juvy (Sundays).

Of course, since we’re in the Philippines, booze must always come with “pulutan”. Blue Room doesn’t disappoint with their scrumptious take on breaded finger fish fillet, salpicao, sizzling sisig, crisp calamari, gambas al ajillo, red hot chicken bits, cold cuts platter, kinilaw, petit pork bbq, crispy shrimps, beef tapa with onion rings, kilawing kambing, tokwa’t baboy, lechon kawali, and diced beef tenderloin sautéed in olive oil and tomato sauce.

Other than providing entertainment, Blue Room can also be booked exclusively for a variety of functions, such as corporate events, birthday parties, product launches, among many others.

As a treat to their five-thirsty patrons, Blue Room will open at a much earlier time starting this week. From 5:30-8:30 PM, the bar will be serving free pica-pica and no minimum consumable plus big discounts on food and beverages.

So, the next time you’re searching for a cool place to chill-out, there’s Blue Room and a glass of iced-cold (insert your drink of choice here) waiting to take your blues away.

The Clarisas Capuchinas Sacramentarias
Published : 2006-06-29

The 4th level of the NCCC Mall Convention Center was the venue last March 24, 2006, of a gathering of the friends of the Capuchins in a dinner for a cause—to help build a monastery for the congregation that has very recently settled in the city. It was aptly called “An Evening with the Capuchin Sisters and Friends.”

The history of the Clarisas Capuchinas Sacramentarias began with St. Clare of Assisi in 1212 when she, inspired by the words and life of St. Francis of Assisi, decided to live the Gospel in poverty, in fraternity, and in enclosed contemplation.

The historical family tree would go back to the first Capuchinesses founded by Maria Lorenza Longo in Naples in 1538. In the course of time, this foundation spread over Europe – Italy, France, Spain, and then South America.

The Mexican Foundation began with a community of the Capuchin Poor Clares from Toledo, Spain. Who in 1665, built the first convent in San Felipe de Jesus in Mexico City. The next hundred years of this community of Poor Clares experienced the birth of a new community that is now called the “CLARISAS CAPUCHINAS SACRAMENTARIAS”. With the intention of strengthening the contemplative dimensions of the Capuchin Charism in the Philippines, the Capuchin Brothers of the Philippine Province asked for the founding of a monastery of contemplative Capuchinesses on Philippine soil.

On December 22, 1979 five Mexican sisters arrived in the Philippines. The first monastery was built in Lipa City, Batangas. On April 5, 1991 the founding community of Lipa started to send sisters to a new foundation in northern Luzon. At the request of the Bishop of Laoag, eight sisters began a new community of Clarisas Capuchinas in Laoag City, Ilocos Norte. Having increased in number, this community started a new foundation in Davao City. The new group of nine sisters started the foundation on September 8, 2003. The sisters are now temporarily residing at the Capuchin Friary, SGR Village, Catalunan Grande. It is their hope that soon a monastery will rise for them to continue their mission of spreading the Gospel in poverty, in fraternity and in enclosed contemplation here in our city.

Among the friends of the Capuchins in the dinner for a cause were Helen Lim, Danny and Boots Tesoro, Johnny and Grace Yap, Momong and Ollie Robillo, Al Baretto, Pinky Cabrera, Grace Carriedo, Arcel and Celine Castillo, Mameng Cayano, Meg Dalisay, Janet Estepa, Eden Garte, Mae Hipolito, Citas and Marjo Millete, Alice Manlongat, Cora Quirog, Boots Rodriguez, Jo Sardan, Bebot and Julie Silva, Eileen Lizada, Nene Sultan, Rose Sonora, Luv Tan, Vangie Tan, Luz Tanjente, Beth Teves, Mimi Zabala, others.

Davao co-op buys TransCo assets for P122M
By Donnabelle L. Gatdula
The Philippine Star 06/30/2006

The National Transmission Corp. (TransCo) and Davao del Sur Electric Cooperative Inc. (Dasureco) signed yesterday a P121.54-million lease purchase agreement, one of the biggest divestment contracts on TransCo’s sub-transmission assets (STAs).

Dasureco president Artemio Tajon said the company will source the 20 percent downpayment worth P24.3 million for the purchase from its savings.

Tajon said the remaining P100 million will be borrowed from the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP).

TransCo president Alan T. Ortiz assured that the purchase of the STAs in Davao del Sur will not result in increase in power rates but will enhance transmission services to the 85,000 customer-members of the electric cooperative in the franchise area.

"Today’s contract signing with Dasureco is made more significant by the fact that we are celebrating the fifth anniversary of EPIRA (Electric Power Industry Reform Act) and the creation of TransCo. Our commitment to EPIRA and the reforms it espouses is further manifested with the headways we are making in the divestment of our STAs," Ortiz said.

The lease purchase agreement will be payable in 18.75 years. It involves four sub-transmission lines spanning a total of 111.7 circuit kilometers. These include the Davao-Digos single circuit, Digos-Malita single circuit, Matanao-Bansalan single circuit and Matanao-Cut-in double circuit, all rated at 69 kilovolts.

The agreement is expected to boost Dasureco’s capacity to improve the reliability and efficiency of electric services to its customers. Its service area includes Digos City and the 14 municipalities of Davao del Sur.

The sale marks the 26th sub-transmission asset divestment agreement entered into by TransCo with qualified distribution utilities.

TransCo signed earlier a P4.25-million contract with the Misamis Occidental Electric Cooperative II (MOELCI-II ) for the 8.56 circuit-kilometer, 13.8-kv Ozamis Tie line. The amount is payable in two years.

To date, total sales of TransCo’s sub-transmission assets stands at slightly over P1.4 billion, comprising 8,608 structures and spanning 995 circuit-kilometers.

As stipulated in the EPIRA, TransCo shall divest ownership of its sub-transmission functions and assets to qualified distribution utilities connected to such facilities

REGION 11 was recognized as having the Best Regional Peace and Order Council in the Philippines, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte said yesterday.

In his weekly television program “Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa” aired live over ABS-CBN, Duterte said the city was also recognized as having the second best City Peace and Order Council.

“I will personally get the awards in Metro Manila next week,” Duterte said, adding he will not be in the city for several days because of some speaking engagements in Metro Manila after the RPOC awarding rites, including a lecture that he will hold in Capas, Tarlac.

Meanwhile, the mayor denied rumors he would not report for office on June 22 to avoid a meeting with US Ambassador to the Philippines Kristie A. Kenny who is scheduled the to visit the city to launch the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid)-supported anti-trafficking project.

“I have to personally get the awards since the president wanted me to get them personally,” he explained.

Although admitting he has opposed some US policies, Duterte said he has nothing against US officials because they are just doing their job.

Duterte has been at loggerheads with the US government after members of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation snatched American Michael Terence Meiring from his hospital bed in the city while he was recuperating from wounds after his hotel room was rocked by a powerful explosion on May 16, 2002.

Duterte even urged the US government to bring Meiring, reportedly a treasure hunter, back to the city to allow him to face the case filed against him before the court. RBB

Although, we should also be accomodating to investors right?

Last post. I heard from the news yesterday that their is a clamor for a sports center. With the park in PTA grounds cemented, will they have plans to continue the Artica Sports Dome? Instead of smashing it to bits, they might transplant the dome to a better place (i heard the land there is soft and the construction, shoddy)

tapos ang G-mall, pagwapuhon pud unta..our 5 major malls are enough na man diba?

the question here is, do we need more malls? cguro one more ok pa tapos tama na muna

Modern sports complex in Davao a done deal
sunstar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/07/01/sports/modern.sports.complex.in.davao.a.done.deal.butch.html)
Today

IT IS a done deal.

This was the statement made by Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chair William "Butch" Ramirez on the proposed multi-million modern sports complex set to rise soon at the University of the Philippines (UP) Mindanao in Tugbok, Mintal.

The PSC chief, who met with local sportswriters Thursday, said the sports facility would be built on a 20-hectare space.

"I'm grateful for the long-time friendship I have with Mayor Rody Duterte. I'm happy that we are working on this (sports complex) project together," he said.

Ramirez said Mayor Duterte committed a huge amount for the project while the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) will source out an additional fund to raise the needed P200 million.

"We will try to make use of our RP-China bilateral relationship on the purchase of the equipment needed for the construction. We will ask that taxes be waived by the Bureau of Customs so we can maximize the use of money," Ramirez said.

The sports complex will have an Olympic-sized swimming pool, tartan track oval and multi-purpose gymnasium, among other features.

With Ramirez' involvement on the sports complex, talks are rife that he might be settling in Davao City soon.

"I might be back soon. But I really don't know when. I can assure the Dabawenyos though that I will always be ready to help in the progress of sports here in every way I can," he added.

Ramirez even laughed off insinuations for him to run for an elective position here or in his native town in Padada, Davao del Sur.

"I don't have money to run for a public office," he said.

Enterprise Bank launches micro housing loans in DC

A PROGRESSIVE rural bank, which has its beginnings in the rustic town of Liangga, Surigao del Sur, launched its highly successful micro pabahay (housing) loans in the Davao Region during an appropriate program at Garden Oases in Barrio Obrero, Davao City Friday.

The three-decade old banking company is Enterprise Bank Inc., which now has 11 branches in various parts of Mindanao with 25,000 satisfied clients and depositors.

Enterprise is headed by Ronald E. Alvizo as president, a young lawyer-banker who said that the micro housing loan is aimed at improving the living conditions of micro entrepreneurs and making their homes livable, sanitary and secure.

The launching was graced with the presence of ranking officials of the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP) and the Housing and Urban Development Coordinating Council (HUDCC) who spoke about the loan program. Present were Ed Jimenez, consultant of the Development of Poor-Urban Communities Sector Project (DPUCSP)-DBP; Eufemia C. Mendoza, DBP senior vice president; and Ronald Fontanillas, HUDCC director.

During the launch, Alvizo said, the bank released pabahay loans to the first batch of Davao clients.

The bank will open today its Davao branch office at GGO Summit Bldg at Bajada, Davao City, near the Social Security System (SSS) regional branch. (AMA)

Montemayor said the participants are looking forward to the inputs of experts on the culinary field from Manila and this will be accompanied with a lecture and briefing on varied aspects of the culinary field.

Emilie Dalisay of the Philippine Women's College, meanwhile, said that students are really looking forward to the competition and prepare themselves even at the start of classes for the big event.

The holding of the MCF is a frequently ask questions from students taking up courses in hotel and restaurant management as well as the culinary arts, she said.

MCF chair and Davao Tourism Association (Data) president Art Boncato on the other hand said that the 6th MCF will be held back to back with Third International Hotel, Restaurant and Home Expo on October 6 to 8 at the NCCC Convention Center in its desire to infuse the holiday spirit as it carries this year's theme with A Taste of Christmas, A Celebration of the Season.

Hello!

I was in Mati last week, meron na rin doon.

I just returned from Iloilo. Paspas gid ang development sg lugar ni Drilon, Miriam ug si Raul oh.

Before the era of malls, Henry Sy had his first provincial branch here. There is a new place to be in Iloilonois called Smallville, parang The Venue compound except that it has a business hotel. Their new airport would open by late next year. It would costs twice than Davao's.

Napag-iiwanin din ng panahon ang Iloilo. Imagine, they are still holding a forum on people's initiative and charter change when most of the country are now on election mode.

Biggest news there is the start of the smoking ordinance, which is four years old na dire. :)

ONB opens Manay branch
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2006-06-30

ONE Network Bank opened on Wednesday its 63rd branch in Manay, Davao Oriental, its 16th branch in a place without a bank.

Alex Buenaventura, president of the bank, said this particular branch will serve an area which has no bank for the last 20 years after the Rural Bank of Manay closed down in 1986.

“We are particularly excited with the branch because the patronage is strong,” said Buenaventura who was among the bank and municipal officials who witnessed the opening of the branch.

Manay is 160 kilometers away from Mati, or 325 kilometers away from this city, a good six hours by bus. With a population of about 30,000, the municipality is among the coconut producing area of Davao Oriental, the province with the highest copra production in the country.

The bank, known as the largest rural bank in the country, has 14 other branches in areas without commercial banks and 33 other branches in areas without any competing commercial banks, he added.

Buenaventura said the branch will serve small farmers who used to motor to Mati, the capital town of Davao Oriental, for their banking needs.

Asked whether the bank will also set up an automated teller machine in the Manay branch, Buenaventura said the management is still studying the option. At present, the bank has 42 automated teller machines.

Because it already has been servicing remittances of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in coordination with international money couriers, the bank will be able to serve the families of OFWs in the municipality and nearby areas.

With the opening of the Manay branch, the bank still has two more licenses that it will use in setting up branches in Malaybalay City, Bukidnon; and in Tibungco, Davao City.

The bank will also apply before the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas for five more licenses in opening up branches this year, particularly in the Zamboanga Peninsula area.

Buenaventura said the bank will concentrate on opening up branches in the so-called growth areas, areas whose population could be at 35,000 but are either not served by the banks or there are only a few banks.

And with monthly income P17 million since January this year, Buenaventura said the bank can afford to open at least a branch a month. In opening up a branch, the bank sets aside at least P7 million for infrastructure facilities, including the building, and other incidentals.

Buenaventura said that even if the bank exercises the option of opening up a branch every month, it will never run into capital expenditure problems and will not even need to raise more funds to fund the new branch.

With this concept in mind, the bank will be aggressive this year in putting up branches in areas where there are opportunities, he added.

Carrying the sales pitch, “Pera ng Mindanao Para sa Mindanao,” the bank will still limit itself in putting up branches in Mindanao and may not even exercise the option of opening up branches in the nearby Visayas or Luzon.

Antonio Avelino, bank vice chair, said during the stockholders meeting early this month that the bank will concentrate on servicing Mindanao in the next five years before even considering of branching out to other areas.

A result of the consolidation of three profitable branches, the last year registered the highest growth in resources at 35 percent with assets hitting P4.2 billion, or a P1 billion higher than audited assets in 2004.

The three branches, all profitable before the consolidation, are Network Bank, Rural Bank of Panabo and the Provident Bank of Cotabato.

The loan portfolio of the bank also grew by 29 percent to P2.54 billion and deposit liabilities hit a 28 percent growth to P3 billion in 2005. Capital base growth last year hit 16 percent to P705 million, based on audited reports.

PSC to help on city sports complex

By Peter L. Magbanua Published : 2006-06-30

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman William Ramirez said that he is willing to extend help to the city on managing and putting programs when the sports complex will soon rise in Mintal, this city.

In yesterday’s Davao Sportswriters Association (DSA) Forum at the Davao Tower Inn, Ramirez told reporters that Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte is allocating a budget for the construction of the sports complex, which is an agreement between the University of the Philippines-Mindanao and the city government of Davao.

“The priority is for the construction of the tartan track oval, Olympic size swimming pool and the multi-purpose gymnasium. As chairman of the PSC, we are willing to help the mayor in coming up with sports programs and how to manage the sports complex,” Ramirez said.

He added that he is in constant communication with mayor Duterte regarding the construction of the sports complex.

On the other hand, Ramirez said that the PSC is in full gear for the athletes’ preparation for the 2006 Asian Games which will be held in Doha, Qatar.

“We are targeting five gold medals in the Asian Games, which will be our springboard going to the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China. The events that we are expecting to deliver the goods for us are taekwondo, wu shu, billiard and boxing,” Ramirez explained.

He added that the PSC has prepared its manpower to oversee all events and the athletes’ training with 45 monitoring officials together with its secretariat.

Since Ramirez took over as chairman of the PSC, the Philippines was able to make history by winning the over-all crown in the recently concluded 23rd SEA Games since joining the meet since the late 70’s. He hopes to deliver again in the Asian Games and lead the country in winning the elusive gold in the Olympics. (PELM)

Cascades perform in Davao tonight
By Chris Te Fabian Published : 2006-06-30

FANS of the 60’s group, The Cascades, will bring back their youthful memories as the band will perform in Davao tonight, as part of their world tour concert.

It’s the first time that the band will perform in Davao. The group, however, has already performed for the nth times in the country — particularly in Manila — since their popularity in the 60’s.

For those who love music, songs like Rhythm of the Rain, Dreamin’, Was I Dreamin’, Punch and Judy, My First Day Alone, Lucky Guy, I Wanna Be Your Lover, Angel on My Shoulder, There’s a Reason, Shy Girl and Last Leaf are certainly playing in their heads upon hearing the name The Cascades.

And the group will surely perform those songs in their show tonight at Central Bank of the Philippines in Davao, the seventh leg in their 16-city, five-country tour billed as The Cascades 2006 World Tour.

Members of the group expressed their excitement in performing before their Davao fans. The group held a mall and radio tours yesterday as they promoted tonight’s show.

As part of their world tour, the group is also promoting their latest 15-track album, All The Way To Yesterday. The album includes all their popular hits, plus two dance remixes of Rhythm of the Rain and two songs they specially wrote for their Philippine fans, My Manila and Warm Manila Nights.

The band wrote the songs as token of “a token of appreciation and affection” for its Filipino fans who have shown their unwavering support and loyalty to the group,” said promoter Steve O’Neal.

All the previous concerts of the band in the Philippines were all sold-out. In one of their recent shows, even President Gloria Arroyo stepped in to watch the show.

The Cascades opened their world tour at the Araneta Coliseum last June 16.

The band is currently composed of John Gummoe, Tony Grasso, Gabe Lapano and Chuck Crews. Vocalist-guitarist Gummoe and vocalist-bassist Tony Grasso are two original members of the group.

The Cascades was among the hottest bands of the sixties. It traces its roots back to 1960 when they were still called the Silver Strands.

After several name changed (old names include The Thundernotes and Len Green) and not successful recordings, the group made it big with Rhythm of the Rain, a Billboard #2 song in 1963. The song was showing up on charts all across the world and in many of these other countries, Philippines included, it reached #1 in the chart. The group eventually got the third largest selling record in the world in that year.

Hit songs like The Last Leaf and Shy Girl later followed, further cementing their celebrity status around the world.

During their popularity in the Philippines, rumors spread that members of The Cascades died in a plane crash. However, the rumor sparked tremendous record sales.

“It (rumor) obviously is of Philippine origin,” O’Neal said.

The group continued performing until the 80’s. They reunited in the nineties.

The Davao leg of the Cascades world tour is organized by McDale Events.

Since 2003 pa may rumors for Starbucks to invade Davao pero they held back on their plan kaya namayagpag ang Blue Gre and other coffee shops sa Davao. Oks lang because most of them are homegrown.

I used to hang out a lot at Blue Gre LandCo and funny because one Sunday afternoon a caucasian couple came up to me and asked if we had Starbucks there, probably after they spotted Subway at that time over at same building. I told them we don't have it yet but they must try BG as it is as good as SB (IMO). They tried though but I never wanted to be so nosy at them so I didn't bother to check with them if they had liked it there.

It's a plan of a firm from Bandar Seri Begawan ?? to construct a 22 storey building cum convention centre (huge) somewhere along circumferential road. wala yata budget eh.

i've no plans of leaving davao eh

of course who would want to. Davao is an indispensable force for every davaoeno. it was a well-thought out plan and finally i had to decide. i never regret my decision, afterall Vancouver's topography reminds me of Davao all the time. The mayor here is so good too inspite of his handicap. See the parallelism there..LOL

I'm from UP Mindanao; we don't get to see these kinds of projects by the way....

CONGRATULATIONS TAGUM CITY

PIA Press Release
02/25/2006

Tagum wins Most Competitive City tilt

CITY OF TAGUM (25 February) -- This city was adjudged as among the top ten most competitive small cities in the Philippines by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

The award was given to Tagum for its laudable infrastructure, local governance, peace and order situation, as well as its business climate.

In Mindanao, it is the only small city recognized along with Kidapawan City out of the total 65 small cities in the country for its promising performance in the areas given much importance by the AIM.

City of Tagum Vice Mayor Allan Rellon who accepted the award in Manila, said that the title given to the people of Tagum is one big accomplishment of the city.

"This is a signal that Tagum is moving towards full development.", he said.

Rellon also cited that the city must take advantage of the various opportunities present and offered by its neighboring city, Davao, and make it an edge for more development.

Davao city was among the top ten big or major cities nationwide. Considerably, the Tagum local government has seen that the growth in Davao is increasingly influenced the growth of Tagum.

He stressed that the city could use the title in luring more investors and continually create Tagum as a business haven.

Rellon also bared that the local executives in the city headed by Mayor Rey Uy is molding Tagum to focus and grow with an excellent service industry.

"The mayor wants his city to be known as a livable and business investor-friendly city.", he said.

ei good news...atin atin lang to ha.....we had a breakfast chit chat with our president here sa PeopleSupport...and the next facility to be opened is PS Davao. Though we already have a recruitment office in Davao, a full blown operation (like in Cebu and Makati) will be expected anytime soon. The only problem that PS has regarding the upcoming Davao facility is the lack of office space / location. He pointed out that we do not have a PEZA accredited IT Zone or Park. Councilor Pete Lavina? Any updates regarding our IT Park? :)

Councilor Pete....a PeopleSupport Davao facility will be another jackpot for Davao. Before Convergys, Etelecare and the other 12 callcenters started their exodus from Manila to Cebu, PeopleSupport Cebu along with Sykes Asia was established first. So if the planned Davao facility will be pursued, the callcenter phenomenon in Cebu will be naturally replicated in Davao... kaya plsss.......seryosohin natin ang pagconstruct ng PEZA accredited IT Zone / Park.

Durian Hotel? ang laki naman nun....and Durian Hotel is not a PEZA accredited zone. Another problem is our law. The law does not allow any multinational company such as PeopleSupport to own a land or a building anywhere in the Philippines unless it is 60% owned by Filipinos. PeopleSupport is an American firm.

Though we have our very own PS Center in Makati, but I'm not sure if the company solely own the land. I guess they have an agreement with Ayala Land.

by the way, this is the building which I am talking about. the PS Center Makati

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/DAVAO/pscenter.jpg

In late July 2005 PeopleSupport announced the completion of its brand-new PeopleSupport Center in Manila. Boasting top-of-the-line telephony equipment, the Center has increased the firm’s total seat capacity to more than 5,000 workstations, and it has some of the high-end features you’d expect to find in a data center its size, such as generators and power backups. It also offers a few perks, including shower rooms and a gym.

This is an additional to the other facilities in Makati such as the one in JG Summit Tower, Philamlife Tower and Export Bank Tower.

But ofcourse the three centers are undoubtedly the leaders in the call center industry here in the Phils. Convergys is bigger in terms of their presence worldwide.

Cebu rate is lower than those working in Manila. I was from PS Makati...hmmmmm parang unethical if we will talk about exact amt...ehehehehe pero for reference i ll give u an idea...

if you are a trainee in Cebu - maliit lang....around 10k plus plus
if you are regularized in Cebu- maliit lang din compared sa Makati - P13,500 plus plus...

in Mkt - pag reg, its P16 plus plus.

We are only talking about the basic salary....each account got different incentives and bonus plans

i have friends sa kabilang account sa E-Office Bay Two facility namin...and they're averaging between 20 to 30k ++ since nasa sale sila....

@Ady - u received my pm?

ei unsay new sa Davao karon?

@gravy - about PEZA accredited IT Park, nag apply man daw ang Landco Tower before..pero wala giapprove ni madam president. dugay na nagapply ang Landco. pero mas nauna pa og approve ang Pueblo de Oro. i guess maybe because of the size of Landco...before naa man gud specific size requirement to be approved..pero now, wala naman..maybe they can reapply as a PEZA accredited IT Building.

bitaw...murag IT Park na gani ang Pryce Business Park considering the number of IT companies na nagoffice sa area. murag ang kulang kay accreditation na lang jud sa PEZA.

quoted from his site: www.silicongulf.net

Some discussions have been going on about plans for Davao's ICT Park and PEZA zones. My opinion is that Davao's decision makers should also harness this special region in the City where industry (telecommunications and real estate), business tourism and academe intersect. I refer to this as the Silicon Gulf Diamond, which is defined by four areas: the currently unused PLDT building (which can potentially be an ICT incubator), the Ateneo de Davao University College Campus, Marco Polo Hotel, and Aldevinco. These four represent pillars of a strong ICT ecosystem: the ICT industry players, the Academe, Business Tourism and Real Estate, all within a 2 to 5 minute walking distance!

P200-M Davao Sports Complex mulled
July 1, 2006

DAVAO CITY (July 1, 2006) – Plans are being finalized for the construction of a P200 Million sports complex in this city complete with an Olympic size swimming, rubberized (tartan) track oval and multi-purpose gym according to Philippine Sports Commission Chair William Ramirez.

The facilities will be constructe at the 20-hectare lot donated by the University of the Philippines in Bago Oshiro, Mintal. Work on the project begins in December if plans push through.

The project will be financed by the City Government from a P500 million loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP).The Philippine Sports Commission is assisting the City Government in the project.

" Actually, the sports complex is already a done deal...Mayor (Rodrigo) Duterte has already committed a huge amount and the PSC will help to look for other resources. Im happy to be working together for the sports complex, " PSC Chairman William " Butch" Ramirez said.

Ramirez said that they would make use of the RP-China bilateral agreement in purchasing of the equipments from China.

" We will ask the Bureau of Customs to waive the taxes so that we could maximize the money for the project, " Ramirez said.

Hwag naman natin kalimutan ang Mati...soon to be a City na rin...It's still an indespensable part of Davao Gulf Cities... :)

Yeah, i agree. Please include the adyllic Mati. The Sunshine Capital of the Philippines and home to several unique attractions e.g. Pujada Bay etc.
