bro...around 13 to 20 million ang sa serendra with a floor area starting at 100 sqm up. Oceanview is still a good buy considering na u have an access to the yacht club, the resort, its a resort community and u can get a lot for 18k per sqm or around 4M lang. pretty cheap for a high end project such as this.

2nd phase of women inmates Village opened
By Romeo R. Braceros Jr. Published : 2008-08-09
THE SECOND phase of the Ray of Hope Women’s Inmates Village inside the City Reformatory Center in Ma-a was opened yesterday afternoon.
The second phase, consisting of 10 houses inside the jail facility, was inaugurated by Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) officials, Gawad Kalinga officers and Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
Duterte graced the occasion along with Chief Supt. Rosendo Dial, BJMP head, who came from Manila to attend the opening of the project, the first among the jails in the country.
In his speech, Duterte said the local government funded the project to offer convenience to women inmates facing criminal charges in court.
Dial thanked the city government and the Gawad Kalinga, the other partner, for the worthwhile project. “Hopefully we can replicate this Ray of Hope Village in other jails in the country,” Dial said.
Aside from the opening of 10 more houses, the groundbreaking for the construction of kitchen was also held in the occasion which is in culmination of the week-long anniversary of BJMP..
Last March 3, the first phase of the village consisting of 10 houses was formally opened.
The village, which houses women prisoners, looks like an ordinary village.

Campaign on protection of eagles strengthened
Published : 2008-08-09
THE PHILIPPINE Eagle Foundation (PEF) will strengthen its educational campaign on protection and preservation of the Philippine eagle.
Makki Macajis, assistant communication officer of the foundation, said the program, “Kalumbata,” a Talaandig term for eagle, will educate the public about the plight of the bird.
Macajis said the foundation decided to strengthen the campaign in an effort to heighten the awareness to protect the bird after a farmer slaughtered “Kagsabua” and ate its meat in Bukidnon last month.
She said the initial target is to reach out to 66 upland elementary schools near the protected mountain range of Kitanglad in Bukidnon where a number of the eagles have been released. She said they are negotiating with the Department of Education in order to integrate the educational materials with the schools’ curriculum.
“We want to teach the children to be more caring to the environment especially to the Philippine eagle,” she added.
Macajis said apart from the schools they will also go to 66 other upland communities carrying the same thrust.
She said they will use the Open Classroom strategy for the campaign which also make use People’s or the Tropical Rainforest books, films and other documentaries that will encourage the direct participation of the audience during the lectures.
Macajis said the total cost of the program is about P800,000, P500,000 will come from the donors and sponsors, while the remaining amount will come from the foundation. In yesterday’s Club 888 press conference, Marco Polo general manager Stanley Lau turned over a check amounting to P60,000 for the program.
The Philippine Eagle is among the species in the country with less than 1,000 in population. Based on the latest count of the foundation, there are only 400 pairs of the bird nationwide and half of them are in Mindanao. Five pairs of the bird are in Mt. Kitanglad.
Macajis said the foundation was able to take care of 36 eagles, of which 18 are captive-bred.
The suspect in the killing of “Kasabua,” Brian Balaon, 22, shot the bird using an air gun and buried it after finding out that it had a radio tracking device attached to its feet. Later, he decided to excavate it and cooked it.
Balaon was apprehended and a case was filed against him for violating tepublic act 9147, the Wildlife Act.

dinabaw August 10th, 2008, 11:18 AM China businessmen to invest $ 6.4 B in the Philippines

By FIL C. SIONIL
BEIJING (via PLDT) — President Arroyo has solicited a whooping $ 6.4 billion worth of Chinese investments in the country for housing, cement, mining, and manufacturing projects.
Trade and Industry Secretary Peter B. Favila said the largest investment comes from Sunshine 100 at $ 5 billion for housing development; nearly $ 300 million from the Fujian Loonglin Group Co., Ltd. for a cement manufacturing plant; and $ 100 million from the Wei Wei Group for a nickel smelting plant.
The President met with the three top Chinese businessmen here before she joined at least 85 world leaders at a luncheon tendered by President Hu Jintao in the Great Hall of the People, a 30-minute ride from the Asia Hotel, where Mrs. Arroyo, First Gentleman Miguel Arroyo, and some members of the Cabinet were billeted.
China Fiber Corp. will invest $ 1 billion for a thread manufacturing plant using banana and palm fibers to produce thread that will be used in the manufacture of clothing, said special envoy and Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry President Emeritus Francis Chua.
The plant will be set up in Davao that could churn out 20,000 metric tons of thread annually, Chua added.
Favila, who was present when the President met with the heads of the three corporations here yesterday morning, said Sunshine 100 Chairman Lucio Tai Yen informed Mrs. Arroyo of his company’s intention to expand its investments in the country.
Sunshine, considered one of the fastest growing firms here focusing on residential development, has an existing exposure in the Philippines under a joint venture undertaking with a local partner.
Favila said the plan is to enter the housing market across all categories - - low cost; middle market and high-end. For a starter, Sunshine signed a memorandum of agreement with the Philippine Retirement Authority to build housing units for retirees.
Fujian Chief Executive Officer Yujian Xu has expressed a desire to open a cement plant in Antipolo City, Favila added.
Mrs. Arroyo welcomed the investment, which will not only mean additional dollars coming in, but also more economic activities and jobs, Favila quoted the President as saying.
The entry of Fujian, one of China’s biggest cement manufacturers producing high-yield, quality cement, using 1000t/d clinker line with 100 percent burning anthracite production, in the local cement industry could benefit the real estate sector of the economy in the country.
The Wei Wei Group, meanwhile, plans to increase its investments in the Philippines through its domestic partner, Golden Harvest, for the construction of a nickel smelting plant in Zambales.
Since 1992, Sunshine 100 had 18 real estate development project in 12 cities of mainland China from Beijing to Chongquing, Jinan, Chengdu, Wuhan, and Tianjin with a total developed area surpassing nine million square meters..
It has been recognized as one of China’s 500 most valuable brands, 10 most valuable real estate branches, Blue Chip real estate enterprise of China, and China top 100 property enterprises.

Davao property owners brace for entry of outsourcing firms
DAVAO CITY — Property owners in this city have started sprucing up their buildings, while others have started erecting new structures in anticipation of the entry of big business process outsourcing (BPO) companies within the year.
Erriberto P. Barriga, Jr. of consulting firm Gibbex Outsourcing Solutions, Inc. said his company has started promoting properties here where BPO companies can set up offices.
In an interview, he noted that when he went to Manila three weeks ago, big companies, including foreign ones, had asked him whether these could immediately set up shop in Davao.
He said local investors have started to realize the need to prepare their buildings for inspection by BPO locators.
"It helps that this is also my advocacy," said Mr. Barriga, who is also a ranking official of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Information and Communications Technology Association of Davao.
He said the new projects were in response to the clamor of industry leaders for local business establishments to be ready for business process outsourcing companies wanting to come here.
Two of the properties, both located on the north side of the city, are being developed into a mall with an information and communications technology park and with adequate parking spaces.
One of the properties is being envisioned as the city’s first environment-friendly establishment, while the other is being considered for customers from the north side of the city and nearby areas, including the Island Garden City of Samal.
Another property is along Torres Street, which is known for its upscale restaurants and workout facilities.
"This property is suited for call center operations," Mr. Barriga said, noting that his company had started negotiating with Manila-based call centers that have signified interest in coming here.
Another property is located beside a big mall, while the other is located across another mall, making these attractive to BPO firms that want to operate in busy centers.
Still another prospective site is in front of a big university and is known for its food stalls, although it will need drastic renovation to make it suitable for business process outsourcing operations.
The advantage of this property, Mr. Barriga said, is that it is at the heart of the city. He declined to provide further details.
Local industry leaders earlier complained about the inadequate interest of building owners here to upgrade their facilities so that locators will find it easier to set up shop.
Business establishments need to get accredited by authorities so that these and their locators can get incentives.
In the city, only Damosa Land, Inc. and NCCC Mall Davao have been accredited by the local government, while several others have filed their applications. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

PEZA OKs NCCC mall ICT center application
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
THE PHILIPPINE Economic Zone Authority is set to approve the application for accreditation of the NCCC Mall Davao for its information and communications technology center.
Based on an information reaching the TIMES, the signing of the accreditation is scheduled on Tuesday in Manila. However, officials of the company did not confirm the report.
The accreditation was granted five months after the application was granted. This made the mall the second establishment accredited by the authority.
The accreditation is necessary so that locators in the center will be granted incentives for their operations including tax holidays.
The NCCC Davao IT Center, a 4,000-square meter fourth floor of the mall, has housed the Western Wats, a research company whose clients are in the US, has started its operations since the last week of last month.
However, the research company has just been in a half capacity operations with 250 seats in one shift. Based on the previous information from the locator, it will occupy the whole area.
The management of the research company earlier said it has invested about P70 million for its operations as it is planning to increase the number of seats to 500 within the next six months of operations.
Ivan Spencer A. Lim, mall president, earlier welcomed the entry of the research company, saying this will allow the mall to look into intensifying its operations. However, Lim said the mall management was still studying whether to extend mall hours in case the research company operates longer.
Jose Antonio T. San Gabriel, president of the research company which is also operating in Cebu, earlier said the operations of the company are expected to intensify because of the US elections as some of its client are politicians in the US or their research arms.
San Gabriel said the company will continue its recruitment activities as it intends to double its operations.
However, Teolulo T. Pasawa, National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center chief, earlier said call center companies operating in the city have found it difficult to expand considering the lack of those applying for employment.
Pasawa said this is because those operating in the city do not pay as high as those offered by companies in Cebu and Manila. Entry level salary in the city ranges between P8,000 and P11,000, he said, while in Metro Manila it can go as high as P15,000 to P18,000 excluding other benefits like relocation packages.

Samal swamped by housing developers; land prices climb
DAVAO CITY — About 10 housing developers have sought local government permission to develop properties in the nearby Island Garden City of Samal.
City Administrator Cleto B. Gales, Jr. declined to identify the 10 housing developers, but said these are all legitimate businesses that have seen the potentials of the island city.
Three other major companies have also started their investments in the city, considered the tourism hub of the Davao Region, he said in an interview.
One of the companies is Filinvest Land, Inc., which is developing Kembali Coast, a 50-hectare property, into a high-end residential area.
The project, about 20 minutes away from Davao City on a speedboat, also boasts of water sports amenities such as kayak and water ski. Company officials said Filinvest Land is spending about P1.5 billion to develop the area into a 400-lot project.
Another development is the Holiday Ocean View Samal, a seven-hectare project that includes a village, town villas, a resort and spa, and a boatyard.
The property is being developed by Holiday Properties, the property development arm of the Bangayan Group here.
Another project is the Plaza Azalea, a joint venture of Landco Pacific Corp. and the Floirendo family, owner of the 33-hectare property. The land will be turned into an upscale subdivision with a 200-room hotel.
Francis V. Ceballos, executive vice-president of Landco Pacific Corp., said that the company would initially invest P600 million. Investments will continue for four years until 2012.
Aniano P. Antalan, mayor of the island city, welcomed the entry of these companies, saying this would spur economic development.
He said several companies have bought properties in the city but do not have concrete plans yet. "We might even run out of land to buy for the use of the city," he said.
Last year, the city government monitored illegitimate companies that had bought properties on the island, which led to spiraling real estate prices.
Sources said lands near areas with planned infrastructure used to sell for less than P100 per square meter. These days, the properties are quoted with four figures.
The local government has built roads and water and power facilities in recent months. Mr. Gales said all of Samal’s 49 villages are already energized, while 11 have turned over their potable water systems to the city’s water district.
Although the island still has no landline telephones, Mr. Gales said several areas are wireless fidelity zones for Internet connection. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

City property owners prepare for entry of BPO companies
By Carmelito Q. Francisco
SOME business establishments in the city have started sprucing up their buildings while other investors have started setting up new buildings in anticipation of the entry of big business process outsourcing companies from outside the city.
Erriberto P. Barriga Jr. of the Gibbex Outsourcing Solutions Inc., a consultancy company said his company has started promoting six properties where companies that are into business process outsourcing can locate.
“When I went to Manila two weeks ago, several big companies including foreign ones inquired on whether they could immediately locate here. So I presented the companies that are my clients,” Mr. Barriga told the TIMES.
He said local investors have started to realize that it is important for them to prepare their buildings before locators will recognize them. “It helps that this is also my advocacy,” said Barriga who is also a top official of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Information and Communications Technology Association of Davao.
Although he did not mention the properties being developed for the industry, Barriga added that negotiations have been started on the possible locators in each of them.
He said the projects are in response to the clamor of industry leaders for business establishments to equip themselves with the capabilities to accept business process outsourcing operations as clients.
Two of the properties, both located in the north side, are being developed into a mall with an information and communications technology park with wider parking spaces. One of the properties is being envisioned as the first environment-friendly establishment, while the other is being considered for those customers from the north side of the city and the nearby areas including the Island Garden City of Samal.
Another property is located at Torres Street, a street known for its food establishments and gymnasiums. “This property is suited for call center operations,” he explained, pointing out that his company has started negotiating with Manila-based call centers that have signified interest in locating in the city.
Another property is located beside a big mall, while the other is located across another mall, making them attractive to business process outsourcing operations considering that these businesses want other businesses to operate near or within the establishments were they are located, he added.
The other property, he said, is fronting a big university and is known for its food stalls, although it will need a drastic renovation to make it suitable for business process outsourcing operations. The advantage of this property, he added, is that it is in the center of the city.
In refusing to divulge the details of the projects, Mr. Barriga said the owners are still “conservative” although they have realized that “they need to be proactive so that they will be recognized.”
Some leaders of the industry earlier complained about the refusal of local investors to upgrade their business so that locators will have easier to establish their operations.
Among them was Andre Joseph T. Fournier who said that some big companies have been reluctant in relocating in the city because of the seeming refusal of local investors to make their establishments ready for the entry of these investments.
Fournier claimed some of those who consulted him for possible investments in the city decided to cancel their proposals due to the lack of ready business establishments, particularly those accredited with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority.
Business establishments need to get accredited with the authority for itself and its locators to get incentives. In the city, only the Damosa Land Inc. and NCCC Mall Davao have been accredited by the authority, while several others have started their applications.

Davaoeño director gets Urian nod
By Chris Te Fabian Published : 2008-08-08
DAVAOEÑO Charliebebs “Bebs” Gohetia has grabbed a nomination in this year’s Urian Awards given by the Manunuri ng Pelikulang Pilipino, the oldest critics’ group in the Philippines.
Gohetia was cited for his editing work for the award-winning flick Foster Child.
This is Bebs’ third nomination in his young career.
The Urian nod came just days after the editor-writer-director lost in the Young Critics Circle Awards for his editing work for the movie Tirador.
“Wa ko kadaug sa YCCA, pero ok lang pud...ok ra, Nipuli man pud ang Urian. hihihihi.. ganahan ko,” said Bebs, who grew up in Ma-a this city and now based in Manila.
Last March, he was the only Filipino to grab a nomination in the Asian Film Award also for his work in Tirador.
Bebs is finishing his first directorial work, The Thank You Girls which he also wrote and edited. The movie, starring Davaoeño actors Pidot Villocino and E.J. Pantujan, was entirely shot in Mindanao — Davao City, Bukidnon and Cagayan de Oro.
Bebs got his first movie credit as editor in Mel Chionglo-directed award-winning Twilight Dancer in 2006.
It was followed with other award-winning films like Manoro, Pantasya, Foster Child, Tirador and Daybreak.
Kristo, a story he co-wrote, is also in production. It stars Jay Manalo, Christina Vasquez, and Famas best actress winner Aleck Bovick.
INDIES RULE
This year’s Urian is dominated by independent-produce movies.
Five of the six movies nominated for best pictures are indie. Since 2003, the best picture winner has been independently-produced.
Nominated this year are Confessional of Jerrold Tarog and Ruel Dahis Antipuesto; Endo of Jade Castro; Foster Child and Tirador of Dante Mendoza; Death in the Land of Encantos of Lav Diaz; and Tribu of Jim Libiran. Foster Child, while produced by Seiko Films, has been considered as indie movie.
Foster Child, Tribu, and Tambolista (directed by Adolf Alix, Jr) got 10 each nods.
Tirador got nine while Endo and Confessional got eight.
Mendoza got most the individual nods — Best Director and Best Picture for Tirador and Foster Child.
Getting two acting nominations are Jiro Manio (Best Actor for Tambolista and Best Supporting Actor for Foster Child) and Sid Lucero (Best Actor for Selda and Best Supporting Actor for Tambolista).
Fighting for Best Actress are Glaiza de Castro (Still Life), Ina Feleo (Endo), Cherry Pie Picache (Foster Child), Judy Ann Santos (Sakal, Sakali, Saklolo), and Lorna Tolentino (Katas ng Saudi).
Nominated for Best Actor are Jason Abalos (Endo), Jerrold Tarog (Confessional), Roeder Camanag (Death in the Land of Encantos), Jinggoy Estrada (Katas ng Saudi), Sid Lucero (Selda), Jiro Manio (Tambolista), Romnick Sarmenta (Prinsesa), at O.G. Sacred (Tribu).
For Best Supporting Actor are Publio Briones (Confessional), Benjamin Fileo (Tirador), Alchris Galura (Endo), Emilio Garcia (Selda), and Coco Martin (Tambolista).
For Best Supporting Actress are Mahlou Crisologo (Tribu), Eugene Domingo (Foster Child), Anita Linda (Tambolista), Liza Lorena (Katas ng Saudi), Ara Mina, (Selda), and Angela Ruiz (Tirador). CFabian

^^ Hmm. hindi.. I have their brochure? or whatever you call it. Sabi dito its a project that would have 60 room 5 star resort, a marine ecology research centre, 40 room property for research and dive course client base, a world class diving centre, a 300 hectare coral nursery and marine protected area. I tried to browse the net for the project, but none.. Anyway, it slated to open january 2010..
It supposed to be a project to promote the area as a world class diving site for coral reefs and mammal viewing. It would also bring jobs to the peole living there.

Under the agreement, the University of the Philippines is to make available, from its reservation, 20 hectares for this project and provide professional input in the operation of the sports complex. Mango growing a multi-billion
peso industry in IGACOS: exec
BY JUDY QUIROS
Mango growing is emerging as a multi-billion-peso industry in the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS), city administrator Cleto Gales Jr. said.
Of the 7,000 hectares planted to mangoes in IGACOS, 70 percent are fruit-bearing and have qualities similar to the sweetest mangoes in the island of Guimaras in the Western Visayas region.
Gales told reporters covering yesterday’s Kapehan sa Dabaw that the total mango production in IGACOS could reach three million kilos.
Auxiliary services such as transport also contribute to the industry’s growth.
Most of the mangoes currently exported to foreign major markets come from IGACOS, Gales said.
With the booming mango industry in the island, local officials are currently working to come up with a Mango Industry Code, Gales said.
He said the local government is also working to organize the mango growers into a federation to further strengthen efforts to improve the industry.
Gales estimated the number of mango growers in IGACOS, both big and small, at over 500.
The IGACOS local government is also implementing programs such as partnering with the Australian government in coming up with a research study on the island’s mangoes and mango culturing.
Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) executive director Ednar Dayanghiran, who is also a mango grower, attested to the good qualities of Samal’s mangoes.
“Samal is the best source of mangoes because like in Guimaras, the island’s soil is soft and the water is not stagnant. This makes their mangoes sweet, similar to that of Guimaras,” Dayanghirang said.

IGACOS dev’t on the upswing
Things are looking up for the Island Garden City of Samal (IGACOS) which is seeing development from three major land developers.
In an interview yesterday, city administrator Cleto Gales Jr. identified the developers as Fininvest Land, Landco Pacific, and Holiday Properties.
Gales said the combined investments of the three companies total more than P1 billion.
“The local government unit of IGACOS is happy with the entry of these formal and reputable land developers,” he said.
A few years ago, IGACOS faced the problem of developers developing small subdivisions without proper permits.
Gales said the three major developers follow the proper procedures for land developing and secure all the proper development permits needed for them to operate.
Gales said another development in the city is a pending congressional proposal by Rep. Anton Lagdameo creating a special economic zone and free port in the island.
The bill is now on second reading and is expected to be passed next year, he said. Diana Lhyd Suelto

Perez opens campaign Friday
WITH the task at hand as daunting as scaling the Great Wall, Sheila Mae Perez opens her campaign Friday in the Beijing Games against the world's best athletes in the discipline, including a pair of mighty Chinese divers.
Diving after the 22-year-old Perez, who hails from Sasa, is China's 22-year-old Minxia Wu, who bagged a silver medal in the same event during the 2004 Athens Olympics in Greece. The latter also held the gold medal in Athens synchronized event.
Visit the Beijing Olympics 2008 blog
Although she is not expected to win the gold, the Filipino diver is happy to be competing in her second Olympics and she hopes to at least land in the finals to cement her status as Southeast Asia's finest diver.
Perez, who hails from Davao City, won gold and a silver in the 2007 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Thailand and is one of the finest divers the country has ever produced.
She will compete in her favorite three-meter springboard opposing the world's best stating at 1:30 p.m. on August 15 at the National Aquatics Center.
China's Wu and Guo are the favorites to rule the event, posing challenge as the finest divers in Europe like Nora Borta of Hungary and Kajia Dieckow of Germany.
Guo, who is the 18th to dive, is the defending champion having pocketed the gold in Athens, a feat after her silver finish in the 2000 Sydney Olympics. She also has a quite list of World and Grand Prix titles to her credit.
The 26-year-old Guo was the diver Perez cited as "very good and very skilled" and the one whom she considers as the stiffest competitor for every woman diver seeing action in the world's premier sports extravaganza.
Another Filipino diver from Davao, Rexel Ryan Fabriga, will open his campaign on August 22 in the men's 10-meter platform also the same venue.
A total of eight gold medals are at stake in diving, which is a centerpiece event in the world's premier sports spectacle.
Perez, before leaving for Beijing, had told Sun.Star Davao they will be using their old diving techniques at the Games and do away with the more difficult, complex dives.
"It's even more advantageous on our part to execute our original dives," said Perez, who first competed in the Olympics in the 2000 Sydney Games. (CRAM/MLSA)

dinabaw August 13th, 2008, 06:24 AM Housing developers bullish on Samal, claims city official
By Rizalene P. Acac
THREE BIG housing developers are currently constructing projects in the Island Garden City of Samal, a positive indication of the local government’s efforts to promote the area as an ideal real property investment haven, City Administrator Cleto B. Gales, Jr. said.
Gales said the developers — Filinvest, Landco and Holiday Properties — poured in a total of P1 billion in the island which also suggests a shift in the quality of developers after seeing “fly-by-night” subdivision mushrooming in the area in the past.
The local government also received several inquiries from developers who want to establish medical tourism facilities that would cater to locals and foreigners. “They see a lot of potential in the island,” he added.
But Gales said the city is keen on keeping a cap on the number of people and developments in the island because it would be more difficult to maintain and protect the environment as the population grows, which is among the priority executive-legislative agenda of the city government.
He said they are yet to determine the ‘carrying capacity’ of the island through a study which they are undertaking along with the the Philippine Environmental Governance Project of United States Agency for International Development. The project primarily focuses on creating strategies of the their Marine Protected Areas and in the creation of its solid waste management plan.
“We are considering this that’s why even if we have projects in the pipeline we are evaluating it further vis-a-vis the ‘carrying capacity’ of the island,” he added.

Oceanview is still a good buy considering na u have an access to the yacht club, the resort, its a resort community and u can get a lot for 18k per sqm or around 4M lang. pretty cheap for a high end project such as this.

we can lower the prices of oil and fuel even more by not buying from them maski once a week. with that there will be alot of oil/fuel in the market. thus forcing them to lower their prices. it should be the law of supply and demand.

i agree...pero mukhang tigmuks talga...imagine, $113 per barrel na pla, eh ang prices nila eh based pa din sa $140...sabi nila their inventory cost $140 pa din, kaya di nagbababa, pero pag tumaas naman ang prices sa world market taas din agad retail prices nila, despite of the fact that stocks in their inventory were acquired before world prices increased...di talaga patas.

MtApoStandard August 13th, 2008, 09:47 AM Govt lures locators to NCCC Mall in Davao City

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — The government hopes to attract more call center locators with the accreditation of the NCCC Mall of Davao as an information and communications technology (ICT) park.
The mall will be the second ICT park to be accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA), entitling it and its locators to perks.
The first government-accredited ICT park here is the Damosa complex of the Antonio Floirendo Group in this city’s Bajada district.
Other major ICT parks planned here will be under Metro Manila-based property developers like Ayala Land, Inc., J.G. Summit and SM Prime.
The 4,000-square meter NCCC ICT park, which consists of the shopping mall’s fourth floor in the Matina district, houses Western Wats, a research company that started operating last month. It is, however, running at half capacity, or 250 seats in one shift.
The management of the research company earlier said it had invested about P70 million for its Davao operation and was planning to occupy the entire area and increase the number of seats to 500 within the next six months.
NCCC President Ivan Spencer A. Lim earlier welcomed the entry of the research company, saying this would allow the mall to look at further expansion once it operates in full shift.
Jose Antonio T. San Gabriel, president of the research company, which also operates in Cebu, earlier said he expects the company to be busy in preparation for the US elections.
Some of its clients are American politicians who consult partner research firms in the US mainland.
Mr. San Gabriel said the company would continue its recruitment activities as it tries to double operations.
But Teolulo T. Pasawa, chief of Davao’s National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center, earlier said call center companies here have found it difficult to expand in the absence of qualified applicants.
He said business process outsourcing firms operating in the city do not pay as much as companies in Cebu and Manila.
The entry level salary in the city ranges from P8,000 to P11,000, he said, while it can go as high as P15,000 to P18,000 in Metro Manila, excluding benefits such as relocation packages. — Carmelito Q. Francisco, BusinessWorld

while oil futures have been going down, the us dollar has steadily been gaining ground the past how many weeks. that partly explains why you can't see any changes in the pumps.
true, the greed of the speculators have in part played on the upsurge of the oil futures that we have seen.

Peng Hok August 14th, 2008, 03:15 AM ^^
Western Wats has already opened last week. Kahapon nga lang yung formal inauguration. The Davao facility, according to the president of WW Phils., is one of its biggest facilities in the world and its biggest in the Philippines. The Davao facility is equivalent to ten of its US-based centers combined. :)
Sarcasticity August 14th, 2008, 03:42 AM ^^ HUWATT!!! Pag sure ui! 4,000 sq. mtrs ang area nila di ba.. Atleast it'll provide over 500 jobs to our city..

US outsourcing firm eyes 600 seats, more shifts in Davao
08/14/2008 | 01:53 AM
DAVAO CITY, Philippines — American outsourcing company Western Wats wants to increase its call center seats to 600 by next year as it takes advantage of the increasing number of clients abroad.
Derek Rice, facility director of the company, said the management was looking at adding two more shifts by late next year in addition to the present single shift with 250 seats.
"I want to beat Cebu," Mr. Rice said. The company, which opened here on Wednesday, has 1,800 seats in Cebu, where it opened four years ago. Mr. Rice was among the pioneers then.
To outperform Cebu, he said, the Davao unit must be able to produce more surveys with better quality. He said Davao agents are better than their Cebu counterparts when the latter were just starting.
Mr. Rice said Western Wats has attracted about 1,800 applicants, adding that the hiring rate is high. He declined to provide figures.
The main qualification, he said, is for agents to have above average English communication skills, since the company’s clients are top American and British companies that need surveys for their marketing plans.
Western Wats has invested about P70 million here and it plans to increase that when it hires more for its second phase, Mr. Rice said. He said the company is looking hard for qualified applicants.
Ruel B. Gustilo, NCCC Mall Davao director for malls and entertainment, said Western Wats is the biggest tenant.
He said the management has started allowing food concessionaires to open at 4 a.m., when call center agents start coming in.
He added that the mall, which was recently accredited by the Philippine Economic Zone Authority as an information and communications technology park, would continue to introduce changes especially when Western Wats intensifies operations next year.
Mr. Gustilo said the NCCC accreditation would allow locators to obtain tax incentives. — Carmelito Q. Francisco, BusinessWorld

Davao rowers capture golds
By Marianne Saberon-Abalayan
DAVAO City rowers Ruditha Poralan, Amina Annudina, Sanita Kasim, and Jesus Asok formed part of the Philippine team that harvested a total of two golds, four silvers, and three bronze medals in the 8th Asian Dragon Boat Championships that culminated recently in Penang, Malaysia.
Poralan told Sun.Star Davao Wednesday of the good news via a text message.
He said Team Philippines won the golds in mixed 200-meter standard boat and 500m half-boat. The silvers came from 2,000m standard boat, mixed 500m standard boat, mixed 500m half-boat and mixed 2,000m standard, while the bronze medals came from the 200m small boat, 500m standard and 200m.
Poralan, Kasim, Anuddin, and Asok were joined by Julie Ann Biadnes and Madonna Cadion in the team.
The same composition of rowers gave the Philippines two more golds in the Indonesian Championships that culminated last Monday.
"We bagged the golds in 800m events in Indonesia," Poralan said.
Poralan, Kasim, and Anuddin also helped the Philippines win silvers and bronze medals during the 24th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in Bangkok, Thailand last year.
Asok, meanwhile, was part of the RP men's dragonboat team that pocketed golds in the 23rd Philippines SEA Games in 2005. His younger brother, Jaime, is a member of the RP national diving team.

updates sa mga constructions nga maagian sa akong daily route:
1. st. john paul - nag sugod na pod ug construct sa ikaduha nga building. remember finishing na sila sa ilang 1st 7 storey campus now the 2nd building still at 7 storey is U/C, crane is visible from the street.
6. unknown construction in front sa LCC or future SM Lanang complex full blast. the building looks big from the street, kaso pasulod lisod i SOCO.
7. robinsons cybergate - full blast, half sa building 2nd floor na while ang other side 1st floor pa lang.
8. ayala center davao - full blast construction din, palipat lipat ang pile drivers at cranes sa area. aside from the foundation works, parang road networks inaasikaso rin.
9. u/c in front of chimes going 6th floor
10. central park hotel - full blast din going 2nd or 3rd floor, mahirapan tantyahin kasi di makita ang ground level.
11. queensland owner hotel in front of metrolifestyle - u/c na rin kita from the street, although papasok ang location
12. LCC or SM Lanang - giba na ang country club, skeleton na lang makikita from the street. kelangan pasukin talaga kung may gustong mag SOCO sa nangyayaring construction sa loob
