Davao Courts Get New Computers
Sunday, August 17, 2008 08:40:03 PM
DAVAO CITY, Philippines (Mindanao Examiner / August 17, 2008) – House Speaker Prospero Nograles donated at least 8 computer sets to the City Prosecutors Office and the Public Attorneys Office, including the Regional Trial Court and library in Davao City in the southern Philippines.
Norgrales’ son, lawyer Karolo Nograles, led the distribution of the computers which he said is aimed at helping in the workload of the courts.
”For the City Prosecution Office alone, we have already given 18 laptop computers sourced from private funds,” Nograles said.
He said more laptop computers will be given to the other courts. Nograles has already distributed 29 laptop computers to the different courts here.
“With these laptop computers, we hope to properly equip the justice system of Davao City with the necessary tools to turn the wheels of justice even more swiftly,” he said. (Romy Bwaga)

I find mid-rise condos more attractive than hi-rise condos coz mas naa pay taste kumbaga... mas relaxing tan-awon and if naay hi-rise condos.. ok pa rin as long as nindot pud sya tan-awon...:)
ug dili pa ta cramped up sa space. And people in mid-rise condos will feel that their purchase will be worthy if Davao will experience an economic high later.

henji August 20th, 2008, 03:02 PM Hedcor stops Suawan
hydropower plant project
BY JUDY QUIROS
Aboitiz Power Corp., the mother company of Hedcor Tamugan Inc. (HTI), has decided to stop the construction of the Suawan Hydropower Plant project in Davao City.
HTI vice president for operations engineer Gregorio Jabonillo said Aboitiz Power Corp. made the disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange through Hedcor president Rene Ronquillo on August 14.
HTI informed the PSE that the company has stopped the Suawan project due to delays in the acquisition of the required water permit and environmental compliance certificate (ECC).
Ronquillo said the Suawan plant formed part of the 34.5-megawatt Tamugan Hydropower Project, which the company is planning to build within the Baguio and Marilog Districts in Davao City.
The company decided to shelve the Suawan project since the construction cost of the project had already gone beyond its target due to the delays in acquiring water permit and Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC), Ronquillo said.
Ronquillo said Hedcor will inform the indigenous peoples and barangays supporting the project of the development.
The Hydro Incentives Act or RA 7156 requires investors to secure a permit to develop hydro power plants. Without the water permit, the project cannot be registered.
Ronquillo said Hedcor may consider not pushing through with its two remaining hydropower plant projects in Tamugan and Panigan with 27.5 megawatt capacity due to the continued delays in securing water permits.
Aside from the water permit, Hedcor is currently locked horns with Davao City Water District (DCWD) over water rights in Panigan where the water facility is also eyeing to construct a water resource project.

MtApoStandard August 20th, 2008, 06:08 PM Davao Chinatown unveils arches
by RG Alama
Davao City (21 August) -- City officials led by City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte will unveil the first of the two Chinese arches erected at the City's Chinatown district.
The ceremony which will be held at 6 pm this Thursday (Aug. 21) will be attended also by the local Chinese-Filipino community particularly the Dabaw Kaisa Foundation and the members of the multi-sectoral Davao City Chinatown Development Coordinating Council.
Civic leader Leoncio Villa-Abrille, who is also a scion of a prominent Filipino-Chinese clan said that the arch to be unveiled will be the Friendship arch located at the corner of Magsaysay (Uyanguren) Avenue and Claveria.
Speaking during the weekly Club 888 Media Forum at Marco Polo Davao last Wednesday (Aug. 20) Villa-Abrille said the unveiling was planned at evening as the Mayor wanted to see what the Arch look like during nighttime.
The Unity Arch which located at the other end of Magsaysay near the corner of Alvarez street is scheduled to be unveiled this December. Two more arches will be built, one will be located near the corners of JP Laurel and Sta. Ana Avenue (beside the Chinese Central School) while the other arch will be constructed at the corner of Leon Garcia and Sta Ana avenues.
These arches will mark the areas of the Davao Chinatown which encompasses an area of about 43.3 hectares.

MtApoStandard August 20th, 2008, 06:11 PM Business name registration in Davao down to one day
Davao City (21 August) -- THE presence of the National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (NERBAC) in Davao has greatly improved the turn-around time in securing a business name registration.
As of 2005, when Davao Region has not yet installed the NERBAC office, it took more than five days for an entrepreneur to have a business name registered. In 2006, the year when NERBAC-Davao was launched, the entire process involved in registering a business name recorded a turn-around time of three to five days.
Last year, business name registration hit only two to three days of processing time. However, as of first semester this year, the NERBAC-Davao was successful in trimming down the processing time to one day.
NERBAC-Davao Manager Teolulo T. Pasawa attributed the success in the cutting down of the processing time for business name registration to the improved internal systems and strengthened information campaign drive of the Center.
Aside from championing business name registration, NERBAC-Davao has also been playing a pivotal role in encouraging more investments in the region.
Investments in the first semester of 2008, which amounted to P4.24 billion, were mostly generated through business name registrations, comprising 96 percent. Significant investments in the fields of information and communications technology (ICT) and property development were infused in Davao City; tourism and fishing in Davao Oriental; tourism, property development and agribusiness in Davao del Norte; agribusiness in Comval; and tourism, light manufacturing and agribusiness in Davao del Sur.

Chinatown arc launched
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
TO FURTHER develop the tourism industry in Davao City, the Friendship Arc will be launched Thursday at the corners of Magsaysay avenue and Claveria street.
The Friendship Arc is one of the four arcs in the city's Chinatown.
Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration
Lawyer Leoncio Villa Abrille, administrator of the Cesareo Villa Abrille Foundation, which funded the Friendship Arc, said Wednesday at the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao that the arc will just be one of the arcs that the Chinatown Development Council will inaugurate.
He added that the funding for the construction of the arcs will be coming from the Chinese-Filipino community in the city.
"When the city created the Chinatown Development Council, the local government said that the council should be self-sustaining. We get the funding from the Chinese-Filipino community," Villa Abrille said.
He added that the cost of the Friendship Arc is P1.5 million.
He said another arc, named Unity, which is being constructed on Magsaysay
Avenue fronting the Magsaysay Park will also cost P1.5 million.
The construction of the arcs in the city's Chinatown will be one of the attractions in the city in terms of tourism.
Villa Abrille said Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte proposed that all stores along Magsaysay Avenue should also carry Chinese characters to give resemblance of the Chinese atmosphere.
"We also plan to make the area alive during the night by putting up night markets," he noted.

This year’s Kadayawan sa Dabaw celebration is being mounted through the fusion of the City Government of Davao, the City Tourism Office, and the private sector headed by Angel Puentespina.
“We are working hand in hand with the private sector. The government’s role is just to support all the undertakings made for the festivity,” said councilor Susabel Reta, vice chair for government sector.
City tourism officer Bong Aportadera said based on the executive order issued by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, the CTO’s role in the festival is logistical support only.
“We are just the implementing agency,” Aportadera said.
Committees were created ensure the smooth coordination of programs, events, and activities in connection with the celebration.
Unlike the previous celebrations, the organizers and committee are eyeing to make this year’s affair the best celebration ever and are upgrading the promotional hype of the festival.
The newest is the creation of the newly enhanced Kadayawan website (www.kadayawan.com) and the Kadayawan promotional video.
This year’s festivity also features many innovations, including having two major festivals: the Indigenous Peoples Festival and the Contemporary Indigenous-Motivated celebration.
The floral float parade competition has also new concept as this year’s celebration will feature the Moda Mindanao which aims to promote fresh and new designers.
“For some of the activities, we also took assistance from the diffe-rent schools and acquired pool of students that have artistic capability,” Puentespina said.
In preparation for the festival, organizers have conducted series of coordi-nation, meetings, facili-tation, and communic-ation to assure Davaoeños a fruitful and exciting celebration.
“This year, most of the players in the Tourism industry have gotten together to be part of this biggest tourism event. Our challenge now is getting both things thrive together,” Puentespina said. Maya M. Padillo

henji August 21st, 2008, 04:43 PM City Council may allow Hedcor,
DCWD to use Panigan River
The city council will likely arrive at a consensus of allowing both the Hedcor of the Aboitiz Power Corp. and Davao City Water District (DCWD) to use the Panigan River in Baguio District in Davao City as power and water resource, Councilor Peter Laviña said.
Councilor Peter Laviña said the city council is sensitive to the city’s need of additional power and water supply due to its increasing population.
“My sense is that the city council’s take on the issue is to allow both Hedcor and DCWD to develop the Panigan River to augment the city’s water and power supply in anticipation of a supply shortage in the next two to three years,” Laviña said.
He said the dispute between Hedcor and DCWD over the water rights of the said river stems from a highly technical problem that simply needs a technical solution.
Since Hedcor and DCWD have legitimate reasons to pursue their respective projects, it is reasonable also to support these projects rather than dropping one, Laviña said.
The city council is hoping Hedcor and DCWD will arrive at a win-win solution to push through with their projects, he said.
Unfortunately, Aboitiz Power Corp., recently decided to abandon its Suawan hydro power plant project due to some delays in the acquisition of water permit and Environmental Compliance Certificate (ECC). The Suawan hydro power plant project formed part of the 34.5-megawatt
Tamugan Hydropower Project with a total cost of P7 billion.
The project includes the 27 megawatt capacity hydro power plant project in Panigan and Tamugan in Baguio and Marilog districts, respectively.
Hedcor said it may also consider dropping its hydro power plant projects in Panigan and Tamugan should the delays in the issuance of permits will continue. Judy Quiros

Davao City is pilot site of meds surveillance
By Grace L. Plata
DAVAO City is now the site for the pilot implementation of the medicine surveillance program of the Department of Health (DOH) under the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD).
Dubbed as the "Medicines Surveillance System Integrating Consumer Reporting" or "Bantay Gamot," the program is considered an important part of improving the quality of medicines in the market as well as monitoring any adverse effects on the patient.
Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration
Deborah Legaspi, Food and Drug Regulation Officer of BFAD, said that with each medicine purchased from drugstores, a consumer is given a "Bantay Gamot" form.
This will be used to report any unusual reaction to the medicine by submitting the form to BFAD.
Legaspi added that the same prescription for drugs should not be used over time as this could pose danger to the patient.
"With medicine surveillance, it is expected that harms caused by drugs are detected and removed adequately and timely, socially expanding the role of health professional practices and improve trust and confidence of the public in the quality of drugs in the market," Legaspi said.
The city was chosen as the pilot site due to the full support given by the local government, academe, private sector, drug store owners and the office of the Senior Citizen Affairs.

AKA Monkey-eating eagle,
the Philippine Eagle
This eagle's head is adorned with long brown feathers that give it the appearance of a lion's mane. The upperside of the Philippine Eagle is brown, the underside white; the heavy legs are yellow with large, powerful claws; the prominent large, high-arched, deep bill is a bluish-gray, with blue-gray eyes. The average female is about 1 meter (3.3 feet) long, weighs about 7 kg (15.5 lb), and has a wingspan of 2 meters (6.7 feet). This makes the Philippine Eagle one of the world's largest eagles, with the largest wing surface area. The Harpy Eagle and Steller's Sea Eagle are about the same size as this species. The adult male is about 10-20% smaller and averages at about 5 kg (11 lbs). The life expectancy for the Philippine Eagle is around 30-60 years.
.......... it was first called the Monkey-eating Eagle, based on reports from natives that it preyed exclusively on monkeys

Hot, humid on Kayadawan's culmination
IT WILL be a hot and humid day during the two-day culmination of the 23rd Kadayawan Festival as temperature is expected to rise as high as 34 degrees Celsius over the weekend.
No weather disturbance, however, is expected to enter the Philippine area of responsibility in the next couple of days.
Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration
The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pag-asa) reported in its weather forecast that the humidity level will reach highs of over 96 percent during the mornings and will be at a low of 55 percent in the afternoon.
Temperature in the city will range from a high of 34 degrees Celsius to a low of 23 degrees Celsius.
The weather bureau also reported clear skies for the two-day culminating festivities, which include the Indak-Indak, or street dancing, on Saturday, and the highly anticipated floral float parade on Sunday.
But sporadic light rain showers may be experienced in the evening, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms. Partly cloudy to cloudy skies may also prevail in the later afternoon.
Light to moderate winds will be blowing from the southeast and southwest directions throughout the weekend. Coastal waters are expected to be slight to moderate. (CPM)

I wonder why people always get a time to spice up statements and try to instigate commotion out of nothing. Is this the kind of people that we have here? I hope we don't let things here escalate into a city vs. city argument. As far as development is concerned I think nobody is trying to compete with Davao City here Mindanao.
It's sad that despite the developments of your city is enjoying, you still try to compare things with other cities when the comparing is already improbable coz all people in this world already know how Davao City is established already. It's as if developments in other areas of Mindanao are trying to get the limelight out of your city. Para tayong mga walang pinag aralan sa mga comments na ganyan.

this moot point has only one solution.
Avoid reading the news. move on... And Don't mind competition. Adhere to higher standards. Go high up even if the peak is a little bit lonely.
And you'll know the news will get more "glowing" all of a sudden.

pano naging commotion starter ang post nya? di ko lang magets how you arrived sa ganyang conclusion...all i read was that the CdO thread revealed an Ayala project is in the pipeline, and that it's long been known to the locals of CdO, as early as 2005.
I hope we don't let things here escalate into a city vs. city argument. As far as development is concerned I think nobody is trying to compete with Davao City here Mindanao.
pero meron nagsasabi ng CdO-NorMin will catch up with Davao
It's sad that despite the developments of your city is enjoying, you still try to compare things with other cities when the comparing is already improbable coz all people in this world already know how Davao City is established already. It's as if developments in other areas of Mindanao are trying to get the limelight out of your city. Para tayong mga walang pinag aralan sa mga comments na ganyan.
again, in the post that you quoted, I did not read anything about comparing CdO with Davao or visa versa. Pano mo nakuha ang ganyang impression sa post nya?

davaob4now August 23rd, 2008, 02:06 PM Indonesian consulate to
build resto in Davao City
DAVAO CITY (PNA) — The Indonesian Consulate will put up an Indonesian restaurant here by the end of 2008.
Indonesian Consul General to Davao City, Lalu Malik Partawana said the restaurant will offer various delicacies his country.
“There are various restaurants here, Malay-sian, Singaporean, Thai and even Vietnamese, but no Indonesian,” Partawana said.
The Indonesian Consulate took part as a side exhibitor during the Mindanao Culinary Festival 2008 Summit preliminaries which was conducted recently at the House of Indonesia.
“We are supporting the Mindanao Culinary Festival 2008 and will work to ensure its success,” Partawana said.
Conducted during the festival were the preliminaries for the table setting for the student and professional divisions where 22 schools and 11 establishments participated for the event.
The competition was judged by former beauty queen Margie Moran-Floirendo, Davao City’s premier florist Charito Puentespina, and Itje Erwin of the Indonesian Consulate.

sandman.ink August 23rd, 2008, 08:31 PM well, his words speak for themselves hindi naman ata bulag o bobo lahat ng tao na nandto sa SSC?
no offense pre...yeah, mukhang matalino ka nga...pero sa sobrang talino mo mukhang sumobra ung analysis mo ng simple 3 sentence post...madami pwede interpretation na pwedeng gawin jan di ba? pwedeng negative, pwede din yung positive or pwede wala lang...yan ang problema kapag sumobra ang gamit ng utak, kinulang ang gamit ng puso...with your post kasi pre, you became judgmental (don't judge, kung ayaw mo ma-judge din). you tried correcting something na tingin mo mali, tapos ikaw naman nagkulang ka ng tact and appropriateness.
sana maging objective tayo, at least iwas gulo, and besides, youre trying to be an advocate of objectiveness.
well, we cannot count the possibility. But the fact your city has its advantages than the other makes it a bit awkward in comparing it to other cities.
whew? hello??? this is not the only post pertaining to the comparison of CDO and DAVAO? Even before meron na...wag nga tayong magbulag bulagan.
sana naconsider mo na were just talking of the recent posts...and siguro those old posts you refer to eh dapat ibaon na lang and lets all move on.
As far all people in the SSC know,
all people? sure? galing naman...ano ang totoo, or baka exaggeration ito, ano ang paniniwalaan namin sa sinabi mo?
kahit SSC Cebu alam nila how you people here are like. And the boastfulness of some forumers here is reflected by an example of what i quoted and i hope it does not represent the kind of hospitality that your place has...and now, an example is you! ...
wow, sobra ka naman pre...di ka ba pwede makausap ng maayos without being judgmental? saang RTC ka ba? :D
I tried to ask you politely pero mukhang palaban ka talaga, pre..kalma ka lang, di kita kalaban...show me where I boasted something to you? im just trying to make a polite conversation with you, pero with your overreaction, parang hindi ata possible..possible b?
and why would you include Cebuanos dito? ano kinalaman nila? madami din akong comment from cebuanos about nor-min negative attitudes, but since ayoko manira wag na lang. kasi, lahat ng lugar meron negative na attitude mga tao. ganyan talaga, walang perfect eh...tsk tsk tsk...
sandman.ink August 23rd, 2008, 08:35 PM well, we cannot count the possibility of CDO's development. But the fact your city has its advantages than the other makes it a bit awkward in comparing it to the other. Why don't you become so glad na merong ganung development sa CDo? You know were hands off with the developments with your city and masaya kami that you are the forefront of Mindanao's development. And with this kind of attitude?we no longer give a damn with anything na meron kayo. Kasi kami naman even before di naman kami pumupunta ng Davao dahil sa Cebu naman kami pumupunta for our extra shopping needs and suroy2x aside from CdeO.

Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan a success
By Grace L. Plata
THE morning presentation of the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan commenced without a hitch.
According to Indak-Indak chair Edgar Ibuyan, everything has been going according to schedule and they have not encountered any problems.
Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration (http://http://www.sunstar.com.ph/blogs/festivals/kadayawan/)
"Nagpasalamat gyud mi sa suporta sa mga tao labi na jud ang private sector sa voluntary service. Hapsay ang atong Indak-Indak and I expect na mupadayun ni all throughout the day (We deeply thank the public, especially the private sector, for their support and voluntary service. We hope this would continue throughout the day)," Ibuyan said in an interview Saturday.
Ibuyan said the out-of-town contingents are automatically chosen as finalists, while the judges will choose three among the Davao-groups for the finals.
In the afternoon, the second part of the Indak-Indak, which is the presentation of the indigenous peoples groups and Davao-based contingents, will be opened by Vice Mayor Sara Duterte. The finals in the evening, which will last until 10 p.m., will be opened by Mayor Rodrigo Duterte.
A group of visitors on Saturday lauded the orderly process of the program.
Laine Serrano Elechicon, public information officer of Bislig City, said the presentations were "simply yet beautiful."
"Nindot gyud ang show, wala kaayo daghan nga effects pero maayo ang dagan (The show was beautifully made despite absence of several effects)," Elechecon said.
Ibuyan, meanwhile, said there were no problems regarding the out-of-town contingents who are housed in different schools within Davao City.
"Gina-siguro namo nga on time ilang food ug ilang tubig. Pati ang mga accomodations, in order. So far, wala man pud mga reklamo. Maayo man gud nang sigurohun nimo naa good ilang experience sa Davao arun nga magbalik balik sila ug apil sa atong mga activities and there will be good cooperation among LGUs (We make sure that their food and water are served on time, and their accommodations properly set. So far, we haven't encountered any complaint. It is good to make sure that their experience in Davao is unforgettable for them to continue participating in the activities and to promote good cooperation among LGUs)," Ibuyan said.
The out-of-towners include those from Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao; Mangagoy, Bislig City; Mampasano, Maguindanao; Tampakan, South Cotabato; Digos City; Surallah, South Cotabato; and Tupi, South Cotabato.

IP center inaugurated
Published : 2008-08-23
A NEW center that would support the promotion of Indigenous Peoples Education was inaugurated at the compound of the Institute of Indigenous Peoples Education (IIPE) yesterday during the culmination of the Kasamongan 2008.
Norma M. Gonos, IIPE director, said the Agbalanan Learning Resource Center will become a repository of knowledge on the indigenous people that will help educators, and other non-indigenous peoples who want to be exposed to their culture and way of life.
Gonos said the first beneficiaries of the center are teachers and educators who are working with the lumads. He said they could find there indigenous materials used in the development of education curriculum. “It is a community of life as a learning environment. We will showcase there different economic and cultural activities so that people will be able to have an idea about the lumads without going to their places,” she said.
Jenielito Atillo, Basic Education Assistance for Mindanao training coordinator, said they will also place there important artifacts from the various tribes. He said these materials would come in trickles as lumads consider them as “sacred.”
He said aside from being a center it will serve as a museum that will “bridge the gap” between the lowlanders and those in the upland communities.
Atillo said the facility will also cater to trainings and other activities that will lead to the improvement of awareness about the indigenous peoples.
Gonos said they piloted 20 schools for the integration of indigenous peoples curriculum in the region and they are targeting 111 more schools this year until next year.
These tribes include the Bagobo, Matigsalog, Manobo, Mansaka, B’laan, Tagacaolo, Sama, Mangguangan and Dibabawon among others.
Dr. Ian D’Arcy Walsh, Beam Australian project director said there was a pressing need for the construction for the center since the present IIPE office is already too cramped. “Now we could showcase more schools and more IP curriculum,” he said.
He said its construction only cost them P600,000 compared to the two million pesos budget for the old office which was constructed three years ago.
Agbalanan is a Bagobo term meaning a place where tribal belongings and treasures should be kept.

KADAYAWAN FESTIVAL A BIG SUCCESS IN DAVAO CITY
Davao City remains a bastion of peace and a melting pot of various cultures in Southern Philippines despite eruption of new hostilities between government troops and rebels in Mindanao.
Not even the menace that remnants of Communist-inspired local rebels pose can rock the march of progress in this former marshland some 540 air miles south of Manila.
While the sound of gunshots rock Southern Philippines’ strife-torn areas, melodies of festive tribal drums and gongs permeate the August air in this capital metropolis of Southeastern Mindanao.
Credit this to the Kadayawan 2008 festival showcasing flowers, fruits, ornamentals, handicrafts and indigenous cultures of Davao’s Kalagans, Mandayas and Bagobos as well as other tribes in Sulu province and areas throughout Central Mindanao.
Kadayawan Festival is a revised version of its forerunner, the ‘Apoduwaling’ which Officer-in-Charge Mayor Zafiro Respicio launched in 1987 during the revolutionary government of former President Corazon C. Aquino.
Main themes of ‘Apoduwaling’ were Mt. Apo, durian fruit and the world-famous Waling-waling orchid.
In the 1992 version of ‘Apoduwaling,’ however, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte’s administration sought to immortalize Davao City’s Bagobo tribal celebration on good agricultural and cultural harvest.
Davaoeños, foreign observers and other festival guests now savor the metropolis’ tranquility and merry-making during Kadayawan 2008 which ends next week.
Maguindanaon and Maranao cultural dancers joined Saturday’s ‘Indak-indak sa Kadalanan’ street dancing event even while military helicopters whizzed above them en route to the battlefield in Central Mindanao.
The festive atmosphere in Davao City is a heartwarming contrast to danger and uncertainty now sweeping across Mindanao’s strife-torn areas.
In these battlefields, families displaced by renewed hostilities in Mindanao and driven to evacuation centers agonize over their plight.
Refugees fleeing strife-torn areas avoid land mines, mortar and howitzer shells as well as bullets from M-16 and AK-47 artillery.
Renewed hostilities in Southern Philippines led to issuance of travel advisories for foreigners but Davao City’s peace and order situation is helping mitigate impact of such action on Mindanao’s march to progress.
During talks with Duterte earlier, an Organization of Islamic Conference representative described Davao City as a city of peace.
One proof that Davao City is, indeed, a citadel of peace in Mindanao is the Kadayawan festival that’s being celebrated without hassle. (PNA)

pwede ba mag-request na kung mahuman na niya ug cemento ang mga dalan, i-overlay na ug asphalt ang mga dalan kay tinuod lang.. I hate the roads today na puro concrete..:ohno:

dinabaw August 25th, 2008, 05:16 AM Despite security concerns, Davao’s Kadayawan festival pushes through without any hitches
DAVAO CITY — Despite security threats and austerity measures imposed by organizers for this year’s "Kadayawan sa Dabaw," the festival went on as planned.

Arturo P. Boncato, Jr. of the Davao Tourism Association belied reports there was a significant number of cancellations in hotel bookings.
Travel industry sources earlier expressed concern over recent hostilities on the island, specifically in North Cotabato and Lanao del Norte. Major security-related incidents generally exact immediate impact on Mindanao tourism arrivals. Unlike in previous Kadayawans, there were fewer non-Davaoeño visitors that arrived before the weekend, a couple of taxi drivers interviewed claimed.
But Mr. Boncato, also marketing manager of Marco Polo Davao Hotel, said he actually had to decline walk-in visitors looking for rooms since Friday. Some of those who wanted to stay in hotels had to ask friends and relatives to let them stay in their houses, he said.
Councilor Edgar R. Ibuyan, who was assigned to facilitate the street dancing competition dubbed "Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan," said this year’s events were a huge success. Mr. Ibuyan added there were first-time contingents such as Bislig City in Surigao del Sur. Laine S. Elechicon, city public information officer said the local government had decided to fund the trip of street dancers.
Some of the groups that came to attend the event were from conflict areas in Central Mindanao such as the delegation from Shariff Aguak, Maguindanao. The local police and Task Force Davao, a military unit tasked to secure the city from possible attacks, saw to it that the city was well shielded from saboteurs.
Davao City police chief Ramon C. Apolinario said his office has increased police visibility to scare off criminals particularly pickpockets. On the other hand, Task Force Davao intensified security in key locations particularly entries and exits to the city, the bus terminals and the international airport.
The most notable difference was the failure of some big establishments to join the floral float parade, the last event in the weeklong festival. James A. Zimmerman, chairman of the parade, encouraged participants to use smaller vehicles to lessen fuel consumption. "We have to adjust to present conditions," he said.
Dr. Lisa Brooten, a professor of Southern Illinois University who was here with her husband and seven-year-old daughter for a different purpose, said that it was fascinating to witness the event.
"This is my first time to see a festival like this. I hope I can come back and spend more time in your city," Ms. Brooten said.
Kadayawan started during the time of the late mayor Elias B. Lopez. It was called "Apo Duwaling" to showcase Mt. Apo, the durian fruit and the waling-waling flower. In 1988, the city government renamed the festival Kadayawan. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

DAVAO CITY – The annual Kadayawan sa Dabaw festivities here never fails to draw big crowds as thousands of tourists also flock to Davao City to join in what is considered to be a celebration of the bountiful harvest of the land.
A grand floral float parade culminated yesterday the Kadayawan sa Dabaw 2008 with 74 floats showcasing the city’s flowers, fruits and vegetables to the delight of the people who have gathered along the parade’s route.
Saturday’s Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan street dancing was another much-anticipated event that had visitors and local residents alike dancing to the pulsating beat of the music of the different ethnic tribes.
Considered to be a festival of festivals, several contingents coming from other regions in Mindanao also participated in the different activities, especially the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan event.
The month-long festival, wherein the culture and tradition of the Lumads take center stage, culminates on the third Sunday of August.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte expressed gratitude for the usual cooperation shown by both the private and government sectors in the holding of the said festivities.
Duterte noted the large turnout of people who showed up for the different activities that were still lined up till late last night including musical concerts.

Philippine Star - Monday, August 25
The closest we got to a drifting exhibition was watching the Hollywood flick, The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift, starring Lucas Black. The action spectacle that came with the screeching of cars, Evel Knievel turns and eye-popping driving sequences was enough to get audiences thrilled and entertained.
Seen before as a mere hobby for few enthusiasts, professional drifting has now been touted as the coolest motor sport that continues to gain growing attention across the globe. The exciting sport has gained more audiences and encouraged the brave to get into the art of controlling uncontrollable cars.
Last May, we got to witness a real drifting event in the second series of the PLDT-sponsored drifting craze to drum up its MyDSL Internet service. It was a veritable showcase of speed, sights and sounds that came with the efficiency of the broadband provider.
Since then, the event became much awaited and most attended as it stretched from Greenhills to Mall of Asia, from Pampanga to Cebu. Drifting, with its combined super speed, engaging sounds and beautiful sights, complements what PLDT MyDSL has to offer.
According to Gary Dujali, PLDT MyDSL head of retail acquisition, the nationwide drifting tour has proven to be a very effective tool to boost the company's Internet service. "The event turned out to be a certified crowd drawer everywhere we went," said Gary of the drifting series. "We've also quantified the success of the activity through increased sales.
"This year, we reached our highest record level in sales for MyDSL. Last month alone, the number of our subscriber base more than doubled. But for me, sales volume is short term. With this kind of event, we make it more memorable to the customers and make them feel important in a special way."
Gary informs they also did blitzes in school campuses and gas stations not just to promote the event, but to make the public more aware about PLDT MyDSL and bring consumers closer to the Internet service "in a big way." In October, the drifting event is set to invade Bacolod during the Masskara Festival celebration. With Gary in the nationwide drifting tour was Tony Valdez, PLDT MyDSL head of retail marketing.
Last Aug. 16, the PLDT MyDSL drifting spectacle reached greater heights when the series took Davao by storm during the province's celebration of its famed Kadayawan Festival. Nancy Jane and Eat, Bulaga!'s EB Babes provided eye candy for the audience.
Hundreds of awestruck spectators had a feel of the exciting sport staged at Damosa Market Basket, where drifting experts David Feliciano and Alex Perez displayed their skills in doing awesome open-door 360-degree turns with their cars. Adventurous ones even got to ride in the race cars, while the drifting champs were in action.
Aside from the actual drifting event, the activities in Davao included a radio tour, motorcade and a party at Bar One, one of the hottest night spots in the city. Manila's top DJs Ace Ramos, Yoshi, Marlon and MC Nathan J provided non-stop music throughout the night.
Of course, there was also the grand display of the latest PCs and laptops at discounted prices, made possible by dealers through MyDSL's Ultrabroadband Blowout. Top PC dealers in the country like Villman, Complink, PC Express, MRD, Thinking Tools, Ingenius and Accent Micro have converged to bring PLDT's biggest Internet and PC event of the year.
The Ultrabroadband Blowout series gave opportunities for consumers to purchase affordable computers with free MyDSL Internet service for business and personal use. The special rates have attracted shoppers and Internet users everywhere, therefore concretizing MyDSL as an over-the-counter product.
Drifting refers to a driving technique and to a motor sport where the driver intentionally skids the rear tires through turns, preserving vehicle control and a high exit speed. A car is said to be drifting when the rear slip angle is greater than the front slip angle, and the front wheels are pointing in the opposite direction to the turn (e.g. car is turning left, wheels are pointed right or vice versa), and the driver is controlling these factors.
Dave Feliciano, who is touted as the Drifting King of the Philippines, attests the sport is safe to learn. As a professional who started drifting four years ago, Dave has done doubles for actors like Dingdong Dantes in the Medicol TV ad and Richard Gutierrez on GMA 7's action-series, Asero.
Dave also taught drifting to such celebrities as Ryan Agoncillo, Bryan Revilla, Judy Ann Santos and Beth Tamayo. "Drifting is not traditional," Dave maintains. "It has spunk and it's different. It's faster than linear (car) racing and I believe it's heading fast toward mainstream motor sports."
One of the drifting celebrity enthusiasts is Bryan Revilla, who joined the event in Davao. His friend, drifting champ Alex Perez, got him interested in the said motor sport. Bryan started to learn the sport last year from David, who owns a school in Katipunan, Quezon City. Bryan practices in Clark and has fallen in love with drifting.
"This is my love life now," said the eldest son of Sen. Bong Revilla Jr. "Girls will make you cry. This (drifting) won't give me any heartaches. I put my money here."
Bryan now ranks third in the over-all list of Philippine drifting competitors (following Alex Perez and Kevin Tuyao) and got to compete in the second round of the drifting series last May. Another celebrity, Ryan Agoncillo, competed in the same event but didn't win.
Bryan himself owns a Nissan which he uses specifically for drifting. Admittedly, drifting is an expensive sport. "Pero sulit naman if you are really an enthusiast," he enthused. "I used to own three cars for drifting, but I already sold one. Drifting is big in Japan and Europe. It (drifting) is the fastest growing motor sports in the world."
Bryan's mom, Lani Mercado, was hysterical when she found out her son was into the said racing sport. "Actually, both my parents were initially worried, but that's understandable because they were thinking I might get hurt," Bryan explained. "It's a dangerous sport, but the worst that happened to me was when my car skidded on the sidewalk. I was not hurt physically naman. If you lose in the competition, that's what hurts. It's your pride. My dad has yet to try it and I've been encouraging him."
From the first drifting show last April to the Davao event, the PLDT MyDSL drifting series never fails to draw in the crowds. Motor sports enthusiasts had likewise gone gaga over the event. On Aug. 30, this year's overall drifting champ will be announced during the final leg of the drifting competition at the Greenhills parking lot, where the 30 of the country's top drifters will compete for the ultimate award. - Leah C. Posted on August 16th, 2008.
The new issue of Scuba Diver Australasia magazine just out has my article about diving Davao in the Philippines -- a still largely undiscovered muck diving paradise
The southern Philippines have been off the dive map for a few years due to unrest around the large island of Mindanao, but stability in the region has seen Davao open back up for intrepid foreign travelers. It's easy to get there, a quick flight from Manila with Cebu Pacific, and the diving is equally easy to access too - despite Davao being a huge port city, within 20 minutes of heading out from the marina, you're in the middle of the huge Davao Gulf, with the pristine Samal Island fringed with palm trees and beaches dead ahead.
Scuba Diver Australasia
The diving around Davao is great if you want to find weird and wonderful critters and don't mind the viz being a bit turbid. The local guides can't do enough to help you and are justifiably proud of the diving in the area. Now's the time to go before everyone else gets there...

Air Force C130 transport plane missing after takeoff from Davao City
A Philippine Air Force (PAF) C-130 transport plane was announced missing after taking off from Davao airport Monday evening for a flight to Iloilo City.
Air Force chief Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog said the aircraft "most probably crashed that’s why we are concentrating our search within a 20 mile radius."
The transport plane with two pilots and seven crewmembers on board was bound for Iloilo City to pick up personnel of the Presidential Security Group who were bound for Metro Manila.
PAF reportedly lost contact with the plane two minutes after takeoff. It was supposed to arrive in Iloilo around 10 pm.
Cadungog reportedly said several aircraft are involved in the search operation. He said coordination has also been made with the Philippine Coast Guard and Philippine Navy for the search of the transport plane.

Blair August 26th, 2008, 07:02 AM Business as usual in Mindanao
DAVAO CIY—Despite the armed clashes that have taken place in parts of Mindanao in recent days, business activity continues across the region, say private sector leaders.
"Obviously, businesspeople are concerned and are closely monitoring events, but business activity goes on as usual," said Vicente Lao, chairman of the Mindanao Business Council and of the regional development council in Region 11.
"These things have happened before and you just take them in stride," Lao said. "The benefits you stand to gain from doing business in Mindanao still far exceed the risks you factor into locating here."
Davao City’s Kadayawan Festival was in full swing last weekend, and front desk staff at the Marco Polo Davao and other hotels said they were fully booked.
Organizers of upcoming business events in the region have announced that they will proceed as planned. Among them is the 17th Mindanao Business Conference, which will be held this week in Dipolog City, Zamboanga del Norte.
"Since participants have committed themselves to attending the MinBizCon, and the PNP (Philippine National Police) and AFP (Armed Forces of the Philippines) have guaranteed security, there is no reason not to push through with the event," said Dipolog City Mayor Evelyn Uy.
The Dipolog Chamber of Commerce and Industry, which is hosting the conference, issued a statement saying: "Our place is among the most peaceful in Mindanao."
In the southern Mindanao agro-industrial hub of General Santos City, known as a global center for tuna processing and canning, preparations for the annual Tuna Festival are already underway.
Domingo Teng, a director of the city’s chamber of commerce and industry, said General Santos’ export sectors have not been affected: "Canneries are still working, and new foreign buyers are still coming in. Others will be attending the 10th National Tuna Congress. They still want to do business here."
In Basilan, one of the southernmost provinces, the flow of agricultural produce into Lamitan City’s port from surrounding municipalities has increased. "They want to get harvests in before Ramadan begins next week," said Jann Jakilan, president emeritus of the Autonomous Basilan Islamic Chamber of Commerce and Industry. "The RORO port is operating as usual."
Elpidio Paras, past president of the Cagayan de Oro Chamber of Commerce and Industry Foundation, expects tourism to be affected in the near term, particularly whitewater rafting tour operations. (GEM)

The search and rescue operations for the missing Philippine Air Force (PAF) C-130 on Tuesday recovered several debris believed to be parts of the transport plane, combat boots and body parts off Davao Gulf.
Quoting the latest report from Col. Isagani Silva, the commander of Tactical Operations Group 11, PAF chief Lt. Gen. Pedrito Cadungog said pieces of an aircraft, two combat boots, body parts and manuals were found in an area between Samal Island and Davao City.
"While we still do not have a positive confirmation of where that C-130 is right now, as of 11:15 this morning, the Tactical Operations Group 11 commander, Col. Isagani Silva, has just given me his report on some pieces of debris at the vicinity of Davao Gulf in between Samal island and Davao City," Cadungog said.
He added: "But we are still trying to confirm whether these pieces of debris were from the C-130 aircraft and the combat boots and some manuals they have recovered were from the pilots and crew of C-130 aircraft."
Search and rescue operations were launched after the plane, with two pilots and seven crewmembers onboard, went missing shortly after takeoff from Davao International Airport Monday evening.
The two pilots were identified as Major Manny Sambrano and Captain Adrian de Dios.
Personnel from PAF, Philippines Army, Coast Guard, Navy and the Philippine National Police were deployed to scour sea and land areas, according to Cadungog.
Cadungog added that two Air Force Nomad planes, three UH-1H helicopters, one S-76 chopper and Beechcraft 200 chopper were also dispatched to search for the missing plane.
The local government units also helped in the search operations.
Earlier, Cadungog said the aircraft "most probably crashed that’s why we are concentrating our search within a 20-mile radius."
Cadungog said it took off around 8:50 p.m. and it was expected to arrive at the Iloilo City airport around 10 p.m. The plane was bound for Iloilo City to pick up personnel of the Presidential Security Group and fly them to Metro Manila.
"Unfortunately, their aircraft was not able to land… so we initiated search operations as early as that, around 10 last night. Their aircraft is still missing up to now and we’re conducting search and rescue operations concentrating on the 20-mile radius around Davao City International Airport," he said in an ANC interview.
The last communication from the pilots was one minute after takeoff wherein they were given instructions to turn left for Iloilo City, Cadungog added.
He said the plane was expected to communicate two minutes later but when there was none the airport personnel in Davao City immediately informed PAF that the C-130 was missing.
"We’re still verifying really as to what really transpired because this is something very unusual… the aircraft and the pilots were all OK before take off and everything was normal until that time," he said.
