Homegrown
By Radzini Oledan

DAVAO'S homegrown talents takes the center stage as Asian Film Awards nominee Charliebebs Gohetia ventures into his first full length directorial debut with a gay film about beauty pageant losers in 'The Thank You Girls.'

TYG will be premiered tonight, September 9, at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. It features local artists July Jimenez, Kit Poliquit, Kim Vergara, EJ Pantujan, Ari Bancale, and Pidot Villocino.

The TYG is a cultural snapshot of gay life in Mindanao and the first film made in Visayan gay lingo. It explores the lives of gay men, where being gay is just one aspect of their lives.

"They have a depth that makes them real, not stereotypes. They do not struggle to accept their sexual orientation but are burdened with other issues which all of us can relate with---self esteem, parent-child relationships, vanity, obsession, denial or abuse," director Bebs Gohetia said. "Pageants are then used as a way for them to avoid or confront their own demons."

In gay lingo, beauty pageant candidates who do not make it as semi-finalists are called "backstage beauties", "clappers" or "thank you girls."

Bebs Gohetia is also the writer of the box office hit "Daybreak." His short films were exhibited and won awards. On March 2008, he was nominated for Best Editor at the Second Annual Asian Films Awards in Hong Kong for his work on Tirador.

The full-length directorial debut shot for only 10 days in the landscapes of Davao, Bukidnon, and Cagayan de Oro was ably supported by Davao's very own, Yam Palma as assistant director and veteran associate director Armand Reyes.

Palma who graduated cum laude with a degree in Film and Audio Visual Communications at the University of the Philippines- Diliman gained notable film production experience under the mentorship of world-renowned independent filmmaker and Baguio based artist Kidlat Tahimik.

Her short films were exhibited in local film festivals, most notably at the Pink Film Festival in 2005.

The Davao made film is unique as it transcends gender preferences and discusses the issues confronting gays who dare to be true to themselves and act on the most basic impulse to seek affection, love, intimacy, and defend the right of others to do the same.

For tickets, contact 0920-6428684. Premiere at 7:30 p.m., September 8, 2008, at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. Email comments to roledan@gmail.com.

IF Ayala will put up its own hotel facility within the business park, the smaller hotels would surely compliment w/ the Ayala hotel. Same with what's happening in Cebu Business Park (an Ayala business park). Marriott can be found within the park and several hotels are also located around and near the park. ;) They coexist with each other. Iba iba naman kc target market nila eh. ;)

regarding the DIA radar thing..

Mr Braga – Chair of the Transportation Committee said:

`"This is not an oversight but simply a case of neglect. In the fast
paced age of computers and digital technology, we can only imagine
the myriad problems emanating from one single lack of equipment –
the radar. And until now, despite requests and appeals in the past,
the Air Transportation Office still has no radar to track down
outgoing and incoming planes in the airport."

His implication that radar – or the lack of it – had anything to do
with the loss of the C-130 beggars belief and shows his total lack of
understanding of how air transport works.

To the best of my knowledge Davao was reclassified a few years ago to
ICAO Cat 1 Approach

As the military spokesman said, radar MAY have helped locate the
wreckage by giving a better idea of where the aircraft went down.
Although one wonders how it would have helped locate the wreckage at
a depth of a reported 900 ft!

Davao is equipped with VOR-DME and NDB and has an Instrument Landing
System. It will come as a surprise to some readers that ground radar
is NOT commonly used to guide aircraft. They normally fly down radio
beams. A PAR (Precision Approach by Radar) – sometimes called
a `talkdown' is not something that most civilian pilots have ever
experienced or been trained to do. (One used to this in what are now
rather ancient fighters in some pretty alarming conditions – not for
the faint hearted!). Provided the systems mentioned are properly
maintained and calibrated they will provide the pilot with all he
needs to land safely provided he flies the correct – published –
pattern and observes the weather minima. En route it gets more
complicated but is not releveant here.

I hesitate to surmise as to the reason for the loss of this aircraft
and its crew but guess that – if enemy action is ruled out – it will
come down to a component failure possibly connected to incorrect
maintenance related to a recent engine change. One area to look at
would be a major structual failure on an old frame. Mainspar cracks
caused by age and constant overloading without wing relieving fuel,
for example.

I am not sure what sort of radar that Mr Braga is recommending and
suggests he uses Google to find out what he wants to spend the
taxpayer's money on. And it's not just the cost of buying it. Funny
old thing. It then has to be operated 24 hrs a day by skilled,
trained people. Probably 5 or 6 of them. Then there are the funds for
maintenance!

One - if one was foreced to - would recommend he consider a SSR
(Secondary Surveillance Radar) that would give some data from IFF and
transponders but really don't think it is necessary.

One hopes that Mr Braga knows more about buses and jeepneys!

Win-win solution eyed in Queensland conflict
By Mic Mic Villaflor

LAWMAKERS are looking at a “win-win solution” to address the application of Queensland International Realty Corporation for reclamation to restart the construction on the suspended baywalk project in Matina Aplaya.
Council Floorleader Danilo Dayanghirang said most members of the city council are supporting the position of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to endorse the project.
But he quickly added that the owner of the Queensland, Teodorico Adarna, must first meet several conditions before getting the city council’s nod.
“We want to help investor but they should operate within the context of the law,” Dayanghirang said.
The Magsaysay proclamation signed in May 1954 has been causing the city government headaches as migration and the strategic location of the property made the reservation area very attractive to businessmen and illegal settlers. The Philippine Reclamation Authority requested the city’s help in enforcing the law after Queensland has been violating the law when it refused to heed the cease and desist order issued by the agency on October 23, 2007 and continued on the construction of the breakwater and drainage.
In 2005, the city council passed an ordinance for Adarna to stop development in the area for lack of a foreshore lease agreement, a decision that was upheld by the City Legal Office. To deflect the heat, the businessman offered to donate the project to the city government once it is finished. But even before the authorities could implement the order, the issue died down until it the city council tackled it once again in its January 22, 2008 regular session.
According to Dayanghirang, Adarna offered a 70-30 partnership with the city government but in this case, the businessman is in no position to make conditions because the reclamation area is public property. The councilor said that some options the government intends to pursue is taking over the project itself or a possible lease agreement.
He said the members of the council are divided on the issue but a win-win solution is likely to get their approval but if Adarna continues to stand pat on the conditions, he would likely be evicted from the protected area.
Queensland’s application is still pending before councilor Victorio Advincula’s committee.

I think the gov't should consider putting concession stands sa park, at least kikita ang local gov't, and make the park self-sustaining.

"An afternoon at the Museo"
Sun.Star Davao, Sept. 6, 2008

http://img144.imageshack.us/img144/2254/museodabawenyofacadeqj9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

As I first stepped on the doorsteps of Museo Dabawenyo, I could not help but smile and feel a sense of pride. It was the same feeling I had when I visited the lovely People’s Park last year and when I saw the spanking new traffic lights installed all over the city.

Years ago, the dream of converting and rehabilitating the old Court of First Instance building into a museum seemed far-fetched.

But, thanks to the strong partnership of the City Government of Davao, the Culture and Arts Council and the private sector, the Museo Dabawenyo project was realized and finally inaugurated last March during the 71st Araw ng Dabaw celebration.

Davao Museum located in Insular Village, which is managed by a private foundation, is another long existing museum in the city.

Soledad Roa Duterte or more popularly known as ‘Nanay Soling’, the mother of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, was the dynamic person who conceived the whole idea of Museo Dabawenyo to showcase the cultural diversity and rich history of Davao as well as Mindanao.

Acting as the OIC Museum Director is the indefatigable Patricia Melizza “Patmei” Ruivivar, Mayor Duterte’s Chief of Staff.

An afternoon at the Museo

Touted as a “People’s Museum”, Museo Dabawenyo is a City Government of Davao facility being run in collaboration with the private sector. Its programs are geared towards “better historical and cultural awareness, understanding and integration”.

Museo Dabawenyo aptly declares its artistic foundation as reflecting the roots of Davao’s development – “diverse, indigenous and global”.

Last week, I was given a personal tour by my former Davao City Tourism officemate Orly Escarrilla who is the administration head of the museum. He explained to me the different features of Museo Dabawenyo.

The Bahaghari Art Space, the museum’s front yard, is especially dedicated to the children of Davao “in their conscious efforts to discover and chart their own potentials”.

Given the main task to facilitate this art space for kids is world-renowned The Kaliwat Theater Collective. The group is at the forefront of Davao’s cultural scene and has organized Davao’s and the country’s first ever hosting of “Tour de Paix” (Peace Tour).

On the ground floor are the Indigenous People’s (IP) Gallery, the Moro People’s Gallery and the Old Davao Landmarks Gallery.

The IP exhibit hall boasts of the five distinguished tribes indigenous to Davao City which are the Bagobo Tagabawa, the Jangan or Klata, the Obo, the Matigsalug and the Ata-Manobo. Fascinating weapons, native musical instruments, and handicrafts are on display in this hall.

On the other hand, the Islamized tribes of Mindanao who settled in Davao are given special attention at the Moro People’s Gallery. The highlight is on the five illustrious Muslim communities of Davao, namely the Kalagan, the Maguindanao, the Maranao, the Tausug and the Sama. Its centerpieces include remarkable brass thrones and Moro armor.

The Old Davao Landmarks Gallery shows interesting photos of the old schools, churches, houses, centers and buildings, as well as maps and some aerial shots of Davao City in the past.

Photographs and memories

At Museo Dabawenyo’s second level, one can view “bits and pieces of Davao’s historical mementos, tokens, icons, photos, illustrations, documents, costumes, furniture, among others” at the Davao Global Heritage Hall of The Memorabilia Gallery.

Dabawenyos such as fashion designer Garimon Roferos generously donated his “Wicker and Cane” one-of-a-kind gown made from a crazy weave of water hyacinth (lilies) and bago-bago vines to this hall. His unique creation received an incentive prize and placed 2nd at the prestigious 22nd International Young Fashion Designer’s Competition in 2004 held at Carousel de Louver in Paris, France.

Another Dabawenyo who contributed greatly to The Memorabilia Gallery is Enrica “Baby” Babao of the Davao Historical Society. She donated some of her family’s personal collections which include Chinese and Japanese historical artifacts to the museum.

Exemplifying the Dabawenyo spirit

The Contemporary Gallery featuring The Nanay Soling Duterte Hall is the “hall of changing exhibits showcasing Davao arts, culture, trade and industry”. It is the intention of the Museo Dabawenyo to support Davao’s budding artists whose works exemplify the Dabawenyo spirit.

During my short visit at the museum, I got to view the impressive artworks of my acquaintance Mariano Amor “Anoy” Catague from his “Colors of our Roots” Art Exhibit last August. His 6th solo art show consisted of 16 pieces of acrylic on canvas and 16 pen and ink and acrylic on paper which were all done within February 2007 and June 2008.

I wasn’t aware that there was another artistic side to funny man Anoy. He works as a cameraman and occasionally as an on-cam talent of ABS-CBN Davao.

It turns out that Anoy became a finalist of the esteemed Philip Morris Philippine Art Awards in 1999 and one of his avid collectors is Mayor Duterte.

He has also presented his works on the indigenous peoples of Mindanao at the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Baguio, Iloilo, Dipolog, Zamboanga, Marawi, General Santos City, Butuan, Cagayan de Oro, and in Canada, Australia, London, Japan, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Singapore.

Other highlights of the second level are The Peace Counts Gallery which likewise functions as the Museo Library and Audio/Visual Room. In addition, it serves as its archival unit which “collects documents and the museum pieces on Davao’s history, arts and culture, including all the scholarly books and studies written by Dabawenyos”.

Lastly, The Remarkable Dabawenyo Gallery/The Datu Bago Hall showcases photos of prominent individuals and groups who shaped and reshaped Davao through its historic years which began in 1848.

Because my visit was just right after the Kadayawan Festival, a cornucopia of paintings, artworks, photographs and dresses from the various competitions of the celebration were on exhibit at the different areas of the museum.

People’s Museum

Although Museo Dabawenyo is still “a work in progress”, I salute the people behind the museum for taking that leap of faith in pushing through with the project in spite of the many challenges.

I was told by Orly that the Museo needs the Dabawenyos’ support. So, if you or your family members own artifacts which represent Davao’s history, you may wish to donate them to the museum.

I left Museo Dabawenyo that afternoon just like when I arrived...smiling, proud and at the same time, with high hopes that in a few years, the museum would evolve just as it was envisioned to be, a world-class “People’s Museum” that the present and future generations can visit again and again.

Museo Dabawenyo is located at corner A. Pichon and C.M. Recto Streets, right in front of the monument of Andres Bonifacio. It is open Tuesdays to Sundays, 9 am - 6 pm. The entrance is free. Telefax number (082)2245885 (City Mayor’s Office). E-mail address: museodabawenyo@yahoo.com

Definitely one of the 7,107 islands you have to set foot on. This is why I love Davao, people there take the beach for granted, I'm not saying they are neglecting taking care of beach. What I'm trying to say is, the city is just a few minutes away from something as beautiful as this! When you live in Davao and then one morning you wake up with the urge to go the beach, you can just go pack your bag and with-in a few minutes you'll find yourself relaxing on the beach.

DAVAO: Orchid Capital of the Philippines

There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called a “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids.

The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling.

All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino.

DAVAO: Home of the Great Bird of Asia –Soaring high in the new millennium

No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium.

No one ever thought too that the mighty Philippine Eagle (pithecophaga jefferyi) considered as the 2nd largest eagle in the world and threaten for extinction as early as the 70’s, would have survived the onslaught of denudation and other factors that continually threaten its natural habitat – the forest.

Thanks mainly to joint efforts of concern government and non-government organizations, captive breeding of this great bird of Asia has resulted to the birth of more than a dozen eagles (hatched in captivity) and we have welcomed the new millennium with them still lording the skies over the forest and vegetation around Mt. Apo.

The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory).

Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, do aerial courtships and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories.

With its habitat dwindling due to illegal logging, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. was organized in 1987 to implement programs such as captive breeding management, field research, community-based enterprise development, and conservation education.

DAVAO: Convention Center of the Philippine South

With more convention and exhibition centers being established that have complemented other excellent tourism facilities, Davao City has steadily positioned itself as the Convention Center of the Philippine South in the 21st century.

Since 1990, it has steadily become the preferred destination for conventions and conferences. This could be attributed to the ever changing and ever improving economic and tourism landscape of the city, which attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu.

Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts bringing the number of hotel rooms from around 500 in 1980 to over 2,500 in 1999. Yet, the demand for more hotel rooms is projected to increase now that the City has more tourism products, services, and facilities to offer.

DAVAO: Gateway to the East ASEAN

Davao City, the birthplace of the East ASEAN Growth Area (or EAGA), is also your gateway to this emerging polygon of power. The EAGA was formed mainly because the areas that comprised it (Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines, Brunei, Manado and North Sulawesi of Indonesia, and Sabah for Malaysia) used to be a trading bloc during the 12th century up to the 15th century where people enjoyed borderless economies with barter trading as the most common economic practice. Centuries of colonialism, imperialism and the establishment of governments within the chain of islands halted the exchanges.

In 1994, government representatives and businessmen from these areas have gathered together in Davao City for the biggest convention ever held in the region to formally signal the birth of the newest trading bloc in Asia, the BIMP-EAGA. In the heart of this formation is Davao City, which paved the way for the re-establishment of cooperation between the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to advance the free movement of people, goods, services, and improve cultural and economic ties within the said sub-regional trade bloc.

Through these developments, direct air and sea linkages to the islands have been established making Davao City your gateway to the East ASEAN growth area.

2 more call centers to expand in Davao

AFTER Western Wats, the latest call center company that operates in Davao City, two other call center companies are processing their papers with the Board of Investments (BOI) for operation in the city; one targets to operate within the year in Agdao, Davao City.

"Two companies, one is based in India, the other is local-based, are also eyeing Davao City for expansion," Gil Dureza, BOI director for Mindanao, told Sun.Star.

Representatives of an India-based company, which Dureza requested not to name, were in the city on Friday for sites visit.

Dureza said this India-based company wants to expand in the Philippines for Knowledge Process Outsourcing (KPO), considered as a higher value activity versus the BPO.

"India has been identified to have a 92 percent share in the global outsourcing, next is the Philippines. This company wants to pass on this activity to the Philippines. It targets 500 seats in their operations here," Dureza said.

Dureza further revealed that the other call center company, which again he requested not to name, targets 250 seats at a building in Agdao.

"This call center company still processes its papers for registration. Hopefully, within the month ma-register na sila," he said, adding that the total investment that this call center poured in could reach P40 million.

Dureza said this call center company was identified to be one of the big investments in Davao City for the year, together with a depo with a project cost of P400 million. (JGRS)

BOI projects P10-B new investments in 2nd semester
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE Board of Investments (BOI) in Mindanao sees entry of P10 billion worth of new investments in the second semester of the year.

In Tuesday's interview, Gil Dureza, BOI director for Mindanao, told Sun.Star that for the month of July, eight new projects worth 3.3 billion have already been identified by the agency.

Of the eight projects, six are located in Davao Region, while the two others are located in South Cotabato.

"Among these projects include investments in energy and resort operation in Davao del Sur," Dureza said. He also asked not to name the projects, as these are still not registered with the BOI.

Dureza said BOI targets a 10 percent increase in investments for the second semester of 2008, as compared to the same period last year. He, however, failed to reveal as to how much investment was recorded for the second semester of 2007.

"The peak of investments start during the month of July down to December," Dureza said, adding that from January to June this year, BOI registered seven projects that are into processing, all based in Davao City. These projects, he said, poured in at least P30 million.
He added that from July 2008, two projects were already approved by the BOI. These are the Hogtech Corporation located in Cotabato City, and the Monkayo Commodity Corporation (banana chips processing) in Compostela Valley.

He said that BOI has already pre-evaluated three other projects, namely: A and J Fish Processing, with a project cost of P174.5 million in General Santos City; the HGG Robotics in Davao City with a project cost of P5 million; and the Chenshin Fish Processing project worth P15 million, also in General Santos.

Meanwhile, for the month of July, BOI officially registered the Peninsula Rubber Inc. project located in Zamboanga City, which total investment cost of P9 million.

On the other hand, Dureza claimed that because of conflicts in some parts of Mindanao, two investors, a Filipino and a foreigner, both engaged in banana processing, backed out.

But Dureza was quick to add that as soon as the peace and order problem will be settled, there is a big possibility that the investments will still be pushed through.

"Each of the investors planned to put up project on a 4,000-hectare land. They backed out because the project sites are located in conflict-affected areas," Dureza said.

He said each of the investments worth P6 billion to P8 billion.
"The investors are still willing to put up projects because they already evaluated business in those areas and it is very feasible," he said.

Ensembles goes to Davao
By Michael Ebro Dakudao
Published : 2008-09-09

LAST AUGUST, Manila brand Ensembles unveiled its trendy, smart casual line for women to make its mark in one of the world’s largest cities. Davao’s fashionistas who prefer a little fun with their fashion ensembles have had additional stops at Chimes Specialty Store along Governor Sales Street lately. Indeed, the urban metropolis of Davao is all set for this stylish and refreshing label called Ensembles which features cheerful color combinations.

For its initial offering, Ensembles’ latest collection showcases sixties’ silhouettes and patterns in stretch fabrics like cotton knits and cardigan matched with the careful detailing and craftsmanship for that fashion piece with substance. Its explicit cuts and fresh palettes define perfect femininity.

“Wearing Ensembles makes you feel chic and glamorous during the wet or dry season; and of course, it is well-adapted to life in the hot tropics. Ensembles’ shapes and silhouettes work flawlessly with folding and draping. Although the Ensembles’ wardrobe has that distinctive fashion edginess; it still reflects that relaxed vibe. Ensembles is definitely a cool, classic style infused in its signature understated look,” says Renren Villena, Chimes Specialty Store’s in-house manager. She adds, “Ensembles garments are designed to be dressed up or down to bring a unique look whatever the occasion in whichever venue.”

“The Ensembles apparel brand is a practical alternative to pricey imported brands. Its updated style and workmanship come at a fraction of the cost of an imported brand. Ensembles’ pocket-friendly pricing makes it easier to realize endorsements by Davao’s influential fashionistas to promote the label and its fashion cause,” comments Cindy Yap, the proprietor of Chimes.

Taking much of its inspiration from the trendsetter look, Ensembles chose showbiz celebrity Carmina Villaroel, who sports that stunning, golden glow for the label’s ad campaign. The actress cum TV host is a certified super mom who would always point out, “Despite my busy schedule, I see to it that I spend quality time with my kids.” And such gorgeous kids.

And Carmina, no matter how hectic her schedule gets, still pays a lot of attention on the way she dresses just like any other movie star. She lectures, “My personal style is comfortable, trendy and unpredictable. There are times when I want to look elegant, chic and sophisticated. And there are times when I just like to feel comfortable in my casual clothes. Do wear whatever you like to suit your various moods. Just make sure that you look good and feel good. Always.”

Carmina Villaroel’s campaign photos for Ensembles were shot by Mark Nicdao.

I agree, Davao has always started the progress in Mindanao & as what you have said other Cities like ours will definitely catch up in the future. The only midrise condo as far as I know in CdeO is the Koresco Condo which is sadly exclusive to Koreans only. I find these Condo's in Davao very impressive.

(JGRS)

Avila wants Davao River in RP's river basin list

CITY Council environment committee chair Leonardo Avila III wants the Davao River included in the list of priority river basins in the country.

Avila, in a resolution read by Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang as the former was absent, cited the Davao River's significance as Davao City's landmark and being Mindanao's third largest river catchments as basis for requesting President Gloria Macapagl-Arroyo for the declaration.

"The Davao River Watershed is the biggest among the eight watershed in the city. There is a need to protect the watershed areas and aquifers including the surface water sources like rivers and creek that are vital to public health, welfare and economic development," Avila said.

Should the National Government declare Davao River as a priority, it will receive a funding allocation for its preservation. (GLP)

The trend of upscale condo residences at present, even in Metro Manila, is what they in the business call MRBs (or Medium Rise Buildings).

However, if you are looking for a highrise condo in Davao, pre-selling of the condotel project of Filinvest along JP Laurel Ave. (just across the construction site of Ayala Center Davao) will start before the year ends. One of our collegues here in SSC Davao, who also happens to be one of the top sellers in the industry, was able to talk earlier this year to the VP of Filinvest for Mindanao Operations. According to the VP, tentative physical structure of the condotel project is a twin tower at 25 storeys each.

Since we do not want to preempt despite having been relayed by a top official of the investor, this thing is not really being openly discussed anywhere in the Davao forums.

Why we are proud of DAVAO CITY?

The 2007 study of Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center, covering 90 cities showed Davao City as number one on the survey of most competitive place to live and operate a business. Lapu-lapu, Makati, Manila, Marikina, and Quezon were next competitive cities, respectively.

The evaluation was not only due to qualitative analysis but also of quantitative indicators like cost of electricity, water rates, cost of doing business, and crime solution efficiencies.

Speaking of electricity, Meralco charges P10/KWh, DAVAO LIGHT charges only P6.44/KWH, VECO charges P6.92/KWh, Pampanga P7.63/KWh. Meralco is overcharging by P2 to P3 per KWh, despite all of them paying the same taxes.

The situational analysis that Davao City is blessed to have one of the best tasting water in the world. In terms of quality, it is next to Netherlands. It is also abundant with Mount Apo as its recharge point. A study shows there is a giant aquifer covering large areas from Calinan to Dumoy and Toril. Water is one of the major assets of Davao City in terms of luring more investors.

While other major Philippine cities are either suffering from water source insufficiency, poor quality, salt water and high processing cost, Davao City enjoys an abundant ground water source and quality equaling or even exceeding around 74,088.637 liters/day.

One of the most serious problem is the incidence of frequent recurrence of flash floods
brought about by rapid urbanization. The city is cognizant of the flooding problem, thus measures are now embarked. Major drainage and laterals in the Poblacion area are built and
other canals improved. There are three (3) major areas considered:

1) In the south, the areas covering Toril district along the alignment of Marapangi creek, Lipadas River and portions of Tugbok and Calinan district, with an approximate are of 12,854 hectares.

2) Along the alignment of Talomo River covering the areas of Matina Pangi, Matina Aplaya, Langub, Magtuod, Maa and Talomo Proper with an area of about 12,857 hectares.

3) Along the alignment of Davao River covering the areas of Poblacion, Agdao, Buhanging, Tigatto, Pampanga, Sasa and Panacan up to the alignment of Lasang river in the north, with an area of about 9,398 hectares.

The rapid population growth WAS already anticipated by the city planners. There was a proposed transportation route system, the plan seeks to establish on a long term basis, a mass transport system including LRT system for the city to ensure efficiency of circulation and minimize maintenance cost of roads. The plan shows efficient linkages among the identified zones of the city as well as flow of people, goods and services in the citys outlying barangays. Soon to happen.

Carrying out the Comprehensive Development Plan of the city is now being reviewed, including the Zoning Ordinance.

Admirable indeed, Mayor Duterte’s vision is to make Davao City livable for the present and future generations to come. The City government consistently pursued a policy geared towards the optimal utilization and development of its finite human as well as natural resources, within the context of balanced ecology, empowered citizenry, and the emerging circumstances surrounding the City’s Role in the Asia Pacific Region more particularly in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), as a major investment center.

Long Live Davao City! Viva Davao City!

Okey, thanks for the info.

Anyway, meron na bang highrise condo sa Davao? Or Condotel?

This is what I don't like with the korean influx, the locals is being relegated as some kind of 2nd class citizen and getting discriminated. :bash:

Inquirer Mindanao
War over potable water looms in Davao

By Jeffrey M. Tupas
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 23:11:00 09/06/2008

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—The people of Davao were recently gripped by great anticipation—or apprehension—on who will emerge winner in the battle of two giants over potable water, a natural resource that Davao City is known for having one of the best in the world.

For the Davao City Water District (DCWD), the future of the city’s water supply depends on the Tamugan-Panigan rivers, an alternative to the supply of potable water extracted from the Talomo-Lipadas Watershed now reaching the homes of 750,000 people or around 156,000 households.

The Tamugan-Panigan River is expected to produce about 200,000 cubic meter daily to service an additional 30,000 households in 25 villages of the second district. This could mean that current consumers will have better quality of service.

DCWD officials assert that the river “is the only alternative water source that has the required quality, quantity and viability for the city’s long-term water supply development plan.”

The same water source is also being considered by Hedcor, the country’s leading developer of run-of-water hydropower and an affiliate of the Aboitiz Group, as the site of a P6-billion hydroelectric project expected to generate 34 megawatts of electricity.

That output is enough to help avert the looming power crisis in Mindanao which is expected to hit its critical period in 2009.

Attractive project

Hedcor’s presentation paper is attractive. It is peppered with benefits amounting to millions of pesos not only for the national and local governments but also waiting for the local communities to be “hit” by the project.

The company intends to distribute electricity starting 2010.

It will be paying the eight communities that will host the project—Wines, Tawan-Tawan, Suawan, Tambobong, Salaysay, Carmen, Cadalian and Tamayong—about P2 million to P3 million as sharing benefit, with P0.01 per kilowatt-hour every year from the first year of operation. Its four indigenous communities will be given P3 million as shares annually, apart from the land rentals expected to reach P1.8 million.

Davao City will also get P5.4 million or 2 percent of the gross sales during the first year. Hedcor will also pay about P40 million in property tax and P3 million in business tax.

The project will improve access roads and open new ones, and provide irrigation water, watershed management and barangay electrification.

Memo of agreement

In January, Hedcor executives headed by Rene Ronquillo, president and chief operations officer, signed a memorandum of agreement with leaders of the host communities and the indigenous communities for the three run-of-river hydroelectric project.

Ronquillo said the company had started building a good relationship with the people in the eight villages in 2006, no wonder many of the village leaders favored its project over that of the DCWD.

Datu Pedro Lagao, chief of the tribal group in Tambobong, said their approval to Hedcor’s project was based on the promised development and jobs. The project will create about 900 jobs, mostly for the local residents, Ronquillo said.

But, according to the DCWD, the presence of Hedcor will “seriously threaten the city’s water supply … The hydropower plant will compromise the DCWD’s mandate to provide the most basic need of the populace—water.”

The proposed hydropower plant of Hedcor will be built upstream of the infiltration gallery of the DCWD, or the upper portion of the Tamugan-Panigan River.

Fears of drying up

The water district said Hedcor’s project could not coexist with that of the DCWD based on their original plans because the setup would dry up portions of the river vital to the volume needed by the DCWD’s concessionaires.

Hedcor originally proposed to put up its plant above the infiltration gallery, at the junction of the two rivers at the lower portion of Barangay Tawan-Tawan. This would dry up a long stretch of 10.439 kilometers from the infiltration gallery to Hedcor’s hydroplant because the power firm will be diverting the flow of water to course through its weirs (dams).

Hedcor will put up weirs from the upper reaches of the Tamugan and Panigan rivers, which will meet at a conveyance box junction at 530 meters above sea level, or 130 meters higher than the infiltration gallery of the DCWD. From that point, a single weir of more than 2 km will be built to end at a Hedcor pondage, which is connected by another 4.6-km weir leading to the Hedcor power house and switch.

“This setup will dry up vital portions of these rivers, which will lead to both immediate and long-term adverse effects on our project,” a DCWD paper said.

Rodora Gamboa, general manager of DCWD, said the plan of Hedcor might seriously deplete water supply in the area, affecting the public access to potable water. She said the city’s future water source would be compromised.

Water permit, but no ECC

She criticized the granting of a water permit for the Tamugan-Panigan rivers to the hydroelectric firm by the National Water Resources Board (NWRB). The permit, however, is pending after the DCWD raised a protest. The Environmental Management Bureau has refused to give the power firm an environmental compliance certificate (ECC). Ronquillo, of course, was not happy. He said the permit is the only a ticket for them to get started.

“We don’t understand it. The policy is clear. We cannot get a water permit if we cannot get the ECC, but the EMB is saying that we must get the water permit first before they issue the ECC. It’s really confusing us. You see, if we can’t get the permit, we cannot build the plant,” Ronquillo said.

EMB regional director Metudio Turbella, in letter to Ronquillo said the issue of water rights must be settled first by the NWRB. “It pertains to the use of surface waters of Panigan-Tamugan Rivers. The same surface water is also the lifeline of the proposed hydropower project of Hedcor. Clearly, under the principle of primary jurisdiction, the NWRB is the proper agency to rule on the issue of water rights,” he said.

Eleseo Braganza, executive director of the DCWD, said the two rivers would certainly solve the water supply problem of Davao but not the imminent power crisis.

“The problem of Davao City is not only the delivery of water to the homes of the people but also the supply of the water that must be delivered to the people. The water here is not the solution to the power crisis but it will solve the water crisis,” Braganza said.

Groundwater source

Right now, over 99 percent of the water consumed by the city comes from groundwater extracted from the Talomo-Lipadas Watershed. With a daily extraction of 212,000 cubic meters from 50 production wells, sustainability is in danger.

neutral ako dito.. about sa Hedcor & DCWD..

dapat they have to make a move now before mag brownout lang atong agi...

mao lang..:)

By the way guys, since namention ni dinabaw about selling condos - marami kaming buyers ng Manila projects jan sa Davao. I know there are alot of condo projects in Davao na pwedeng ibenta however, i'm inviting u guys to widen ur market and also sell Manila projects. If you wish to join my team, u can send me an email to the addresses found below.

You will not be considered as middlemen or external brokers. You'll be part of the inhouse sales team or company owned sales force. When buyers deal with u, they are dealing with the developers directly.

To those who wish to sell DMCI and Filinvest projects, you can pm me for details. I can let my agents in Davao assist you. However, I am more focused with Robinsons and I am inviting u to join my team in Robinsons Land - Highrise Building Division. ;)

IMO, mas importante ang water, kse limited ang pwede pagkunan ng supply...unlike power, madaming alternatives, like what you listed. add ko lang, nuclear power plant. sana yun na lang ang gamitin natin, if I'm not mistaken, mas mura pag nuclear ang pagkukunan.

Knowledge Process Outsourcing Overview
by icatchit.com

Modern concepts like Knowledge Management require evolved knowledge management organizations to take off the gloves and get up-close to the knowledge-makers and the ideas they produce. But it requires more than that. Knowledge management's fundamental insight is that by definition knowledge is more about intelligent people than anything else; because you simply cannot have knowledge capital without the intelligence of people and you certainly cannot realize the economic value of knowledge without a context created by relationships with people.

The BPO assembly lines that you probably have already experienced don't seem to work from these assumptions and consequently everybody gets short-changed (and many are unhappy). We are very happy to see the raising of the bar in this business from static BPO to dynamic BPO (KPO).

So what is this new thing called KPO? Just one more acronym to use when you can't think of anything useful to say? Not by a long shot. It is forming up to be the way we do business in the 21st Century. Instead of a BPO drone who helps you perpetuate errors until they become obvious and intolerable, KPO-trained personnel think: this is our problem, define it, and create solutions. We focus more on defining the right questions than mere answers to a question. Skimming over the top of a process is not the way to understand it; understanding and knowledge go hand-in-hand. In fact understanding is the sine que non of knowledge.

Since KPO is still a relatively new concept, let's use a simple example. You take your car to a BPO mechanic because it is stalling briefly when you start off from a stop sign and when you try to pass another car. He discovers it is a sticky accelerator pedal, puts some grease on it and tells you it is done. He charges you a bargain basement price of 50 bucks. A week later you cannot start the car. Since he was so reasonable last time, you return thinking this must be a new problem. He finds the fuel pump has failed, replaces it, and you get out of the shop for a few hundred, again a bargain, you think. A month later, the same process begins again: stalling on acceleration. By now you begin to wonder.

So, you take it to a KPO mechanic. He analyzes the problem, determines the gas pedal is sticking, but he isn't satisfied and puts a pressure gauge on the fuel line. He discovers that the pressure falls too low and asks why this should be. He pulls the fuel line and discovers that the line is partially clogged, which causes undue stress on the fuel pump causing the car to stall on acceleration and the fuel pump to fail prematurely. He puts some grease on the pedal, a common problem with your make of car, replaces the fuel line and charges you 100 bucks. No fuel pump replacement necessary because you have solved the problem before it caused system failure.

But our KPO mechanic goes one better and asks: what kinda gas you using? Yup, that cheapo station down on the corner has dirty gas and that's the real problem here. You happily pay him and walk away thankful he was smart enough to ask the right questions. That is KPO in a nutshell.

Whereas BPO focuses on Information Value Chain, KPO focuses on Knowledge Value Chain; BPO considers technological systems as key components guiding the organization's business processes; KPO treats human systems as key components that engage in continuous assessment of information archived in the technological systems.

If you want to propel your SME business into the 21st Century and gain a secure place in the global future, you will very likely become intimately acquainted with KPO, in one form or another. For one thing some form of Process Outsourcing is becoming the state of the art in today's business climate. To put it simply, we do it better for less money.

We'd like to stress that KPO is about effective management because we believe that people who are managed well, perform well.

Knowledge Process Outsourcing: The Big Game
By Deepali Sathe and Aradhana

Touted as the Next Great Thing to happen to the outsourcing industry, knowledge services or KPO, could outpace business process outsourcing. While the latter draws upon the process expertise of the vendor, the former utilizes specialized knowledge skills.

In the last two years, KPO has grown to encompass several specialist areas that were earlier considered off-limits for offshoring. For instance, a legal outsourcing firm employs lawyers; a pharma R&D outsourcing company recruits doctors, PhDs in life sciences and an auto engineering outsourcing firm requires engineers with CAD/CAM expertise. Unlike traditional BPOs where relatively low-level skills were required, here knowledge and professional education is the key.

Yup bro. KPO is simply taking BPO to the next level. Normally kc, pag sinabing BPO - ang mga nasa isip ng mga tao ay callcenters and other businesses processes that are being outsourced here in the Philippines like email, chat, customer support, technical support, medical transcription, captioning, etc. This industry is good considering that everyone has the chance to work.

But KPOs are for those highly skilled individuals. Marami tayong accountants, lawyers, computer engineers, writers, researchers, teachers, and other professionals in Davao na may challenges sa paghahanap ng trabaho. The entry of KPOs would definitely provide them employment.

May mga KPOs which are into legal services, engineering, or research plus marami pa.

Large Hadron Collider activated successfully

http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/7729/fieldlhclf6.png (http://imageshack.us)

PHYSICISTS around the world, some in their pyjamas and others with champagne, last night celebrated the first tests of the Large Hadron Collider which they hope will unlock the secrets of the universe and its origins.

The Large Hadron Collider, or LHC, is the largest and most complex machine ever made and is expected to revamp modern physics by smashing together particles in a bid to recreate the conditions of the Big Bang.

Staff in the control room on the border of Switzerland and France clapped as two beams of particles were sent silently first one way and then the other around the LHC's 27km underground chamber.

"Things can go wrong at any time," said project leader Lyn Evans, who wore jeans and running shoes for the LHC's debut.

"But this morning we had a great start."

It will be weeks or months before two particles ever crash together in the giant tube, and even longer before scientists can interpret results, said Jos Engelen, chief scientific officer of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research.

"Anything between a year and four years, depending on how difficult this new physics is to find," Mr Engelen said.

Pyjama-clad scientists calling themselves "Nerds in Nightshirts" partied at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, Illinois as they waited late into the night for the first signals from the 10 billion Swiss franc ($11 billion) machine.

The first blip came soon after the LHC was activated at 9.30am CERN time (5.30pm AEST), when it was 1.30am in Batavia, home of the Tevatron – which lays claim to being the most powerful particle collider until the LHC starts smashing protons.

Physicists brushed off suggestions that the LHC, dubbed a "doomsday device" by some, could create tiny black holes that could suck in the planet.

"The worries that scientists had were nothing to do with being swallowed up by black holes and everything to do with technical hitches or electronic failure," said Jim al-Khalili, a physicist at Britain's University of Surrey.

"Now, after a collective sigh of relief, the real fun starts," Mr al-Khalili said.

"No matter what we find, we will be unlocking the secrets of the universe."

The LHC will send beams of subatomic particles called protons whizzing around the tube at just under the speed of light.

The hope is that they will smash into one another and explode in a burst of new and previously unseen types of particles – recreating on a tiny scale the heat and energy of the Big Bang that gave birth to the universe 13.7 billion years ago.

At full speed the LHC will engineer 600 million collisions every second. Data will be transmitted via a network called The Grid to scientists at 170 institutions in 33 countries.

"It is sort of a virtual United Nations," said Michael Tuts, a physics professor at Columbia University in New York and program manager for 400 US physicists working on one LHC project.

The experiments could confirm the existence of the Higgs Boson, a theoretical particle named after Peter Higgs, who first proposed it in 1964.

Also referred to as the "God particle", the Higgs Boson could help explain how matter has mass.

"I think it's pretty likely" that it will be found, Mr Higgs told reporters at the University of Edinburgh, where he is a retired professor of physics.

Scientists halted the particle beam's counter-clockwise spin temporarily last night after problems with the machine's magnets caused its temperature to warm slightly.

CERN officials said such minor glitches were to be expected given the intricacy of the machine, which is cooled to minus 271.3 degrees Celsius.

graphic designs considrered KPO?

If it's engineering designs and development, then yes. KPO is more into higher-value services.

Here are some of the examples;

BPO is the earlier phase of KPO. KPO is a higher level of BPO :D Hence,

For Health Information

BPO
plain medical transcription

KPO
with KPO, companies will set up facilities equipped to receive medical data from abroad, which local or Philippine medical professionals will actually analyze and then make recommendations on.

For Legal Services

BPO
legal transcription

KPO
research and analysis support

Here's an entry from wiki:

Knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) is a form of outsourcing, in which knowledge-related and information-related work is carried out by workers in a different company or by a subsidiary of the same organization, which may be in the same country or in an offshore location to save cost. Unlike the outsourcing of manufacturing, this typically involves high-value work carried out by highly skilled staff. KPO firms, in addition to providing expertise in the processes themselves, often make many low level business decisions—typically those that are easily undone if they conflict with higher-level business plans.

In India as well as the Philippines, KPO is envisaged as having a high potential, not only in the Information Technology (IT) or Information Technology Enabled Services (ITES) sectors; it could include patent and copyright related services, other legal research functions, business intelligence and analytics, clinical research, publishing and supply chain management, all of which require a large number of small decisions, and the final products of which tend to be relatively easy to evaluate for accuracy or effectiveness.

The maturity of the BPO sector in both countries gives it an obvious lead in KPO, essentially an offshoot of BPO. It is the high-end activity of the BPO industry and as of 2007 was estimated to provide substantial growth over the next few years.[1] More complex fields of work that the Indian KPO industry focuses on include intellectual property or patent research, content development, R&D in pharmaceuticals and biotechnology, market research, equity research, data research, database creation, analytical services, financial modeling, design and development in automotive and aerospace industries, animation and simulation, medical content and services, remote education and e-learning, publishing and legal support.

Some practitioners argue that one region likely to suffer extreme job loss due to KPO is the USA. Princeton economist Alan Blinder estimates 40 million white-collar jobs in the US alone could move offshore in a decade or two.

Biggest R&B party to go on Sept. 27
By Chris Te Fabian Published : 2008-09-05

AFTER many delays, the much-awaited R&B party featuring the country’s biggest names in the music genre will definitely be held this month.
The concert has been set on September 27 at the University of Mindanao (UM) gym in Matina, Davao City.
In the bill are Myxtreme, Jay-R, Kris Lawrence, Thor and South Border’s Jay Durias. Myxtreme, Thor and Jay are Davao’s homegrown talents who are now among the biggest players in Manila.
The September to Remember concert will also be the album launch of Myxtreme, the biggest winner in last year’s Muzika del Sur’s Music Awards with two major honors.
The R&B concert was initially set last July.
But due to some unavoidable circumstances, including the arranging of the performers’ schedules and paper works, the organizers moved the concert to September.
The tickets will be out by next week, Myxtreme vocalist Sherwin Acac texted Times.
As Davaoeño, Sherwin said they have long been wishing to have their album launch in Davao as a tribute to the region where they started.
The band was formed as FreshMix in Davao before moving to Manila where they become the back-up band of Jay-R, the country’s R&B Prince.
The band underwent various membership changes. Then vocalist Thor (born Ethoree Dulay from Panabo City in Davao del Norte) left the group for a solo career. Since then, he has successfully released two albums, and a collaboration with a London-based group. Thor has produced the hits Wonderland and Be My Number Two (with fellow Davao talent Juris Fernandez of M.Y.M.P.
Sherwin said he is happy that fellow Davaoeño artists Thor and Jay are very supportive in this ambitious project for their kababayang Davaoeños.
“I hope our Davaoenos will support us,” Sherwin said.
Aside from Sherwin on vocals and guitars, Myxtreme is composed of Jopee Hipolito on drums, Jovel Camahalan on keyboard, John Fritz Morales on bass, Jason Chua on lead guitar and Mark Michael Tan Garcia on vocals.
The band’s debut album will have 14 songs – 10 originals and four covers of their fave songs.
The album includes Windblow, the group entry in MDS Awards in 2007 that won them Best Video and the People Choice’s Award. That song became a regional hit in Davao last year, topping a number of radio stations. Even Gary Valenciano expressed interest in recording the song.
The carrier single in the new album is the revival, No Arms Can Ever Hold You, by English glam rocker Chris Norman.

Conchings: getting the best of ‘native chicken’
Published : 2008-09-09

IT WAS a Friday night and with our friends whose love for food is second only to their partners, we went on another mission to find new restos in town. One of the group came from Cebu and wanted to check out a newly opened chicken house which he said might be a franchise of that one in Cebu.
The resto was high-ceilinged and quite impressive as tables and chairs are well-spaced with enough elbow room for those who would like to eat as much as it is decently allowed in polite society.
Conchings, The Original Conching’s Native Chicken & Fast Food, has this to say: “We aim to serve them with the best-tasting, tender, juicy chicken, chicken that is always served hot.” This chicken house claims to serve their meals “in a jiffy” so that customers will have time to enjoy their food rather than wait for it to arrive.
Located at corner Araullo & Mabini Streets, Conchings also offers an array of grilled food, such as pork barbecue, inihaw na pusit, and pork belly. They also serve pochero and kinilaw, for families and groups of friends who want to savor the taste of the free range chicken, or what we call ‘native’ chicken.
“We guarantee that you will love our food and will keep coming back for more,” Ross Luga, one of the owners, said.
The business partners are composed of a circle of 12 called the “Dozen Matter,” most of them Davao Light and Power Corporation managers. Angel Delos Santos is the Managing partner, along with engineers Clovis Racho, Irwin Pagdalian, Ben Arkoncel, Emil Ybanez, Atty. Sherwin Quilatan, Mr. Bong Borja, Bong Quilos, Arzy Sacamos, Arnold Biliran, and Ross Luga. The restaurant opened last July 18, 2008.
The Original Conching’s Native Chicken & Fast Food opens daily, Mondays to Sundays, from 10 am to 2pm (Lunch) and 5pm to 10pm (Dinner.) Contact 221 4448 for inquiries.

mejo confusing noh? ehehehehe pati ako maglibog pud ko usahay...basta ani....KPO is the next level after BPO. Mas complex ang mga ginabuhat sa KPOs - it's more than answering calls, doing calls, transcribing, captioning, and other back office services. If sa BPO - anybody can apply and work, sa KPO - it's more on specializations.

KPO - Knowledge Process Outsourcing can be simply defined as an off-shoring of knowledge intensive business processes that require specialized domain-based expertise.

Davao paddlers shine in Int’l Open

Paddlers from Davao City who are part of the Philippine Dragon Boat team powered the squad in winning the over-all crown of the recently held International Open and Asian Dragon Boat Champion-ships in Padang, Indonesia.

The team led by Davao’s Sanita Kasim, Amina “Matet” Anodin, Julie Anne Biadnes, Rodita Puralan, Madonna Kadion and Jesus Asoc brought back 3 golds for team Philippines in the 500 meter women’s standard, the 800 meter 10 aside (women) and the 800 meter mixed standard.

“We are truly proud of this achievement by our Davao paddlers. They have gone a long way since then and we are expecting more stellar performances from them in the future,” Tommy Inigo of SCOOP Davao, who helped mold Kasim and Anodin in Samal before they joined the team said.

On the other hand, host Padang also won 2 gold medals in the 200 meter mixed and 500 meter 10 aside events, 4 silvers in the 200 mixed, 500 mixed standard, 500 meter 10 aside and 200 meter mixed women, and a bronze in the 500 meter standard women, 200 meter standard women and the 200 meter 10 aside (women).

Bidding for Mt. Diwalwal development starts

Thursday, September 11, 2008 10:26 AM

DAVAO CITY-- A portion of the 8,100-hectare Mt. Diwalwal Mineral Reserve in Monkayo, Compostela Valley is now up for bidding to interested mining investors.

"The bidding process for Mt. Diwalwal has already begun and in fact we had the invitation to bid published last Sept. 5. Those interested to invest in Mt. Diwalwal could check it," Philippine Mining Development Corp. president Oliver Butalid said.

Butalid expressed hope that the bidding process that is now ongoing for the Ulip-Paraiso parcel of the development of the Mt. Diwalwal mineral reservation area would dispel speculations a secret deal was hatched with the controversial Chinese firm ZTE.

"This is the proof of the pudding that there is no secret deal with any foreign corporation, including ZTE, in Mt. Diwalwal," Butalidsaid.

PMDC, formerly Natural Resources and Mining Development Corp. is the corporate arm of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources that manages Mt. Diwalwal. It is the mining permit holder of the gold-rich mountain. -- Edith Regalado

Airline that Zesto (re)built

ASIAN SPIRIT is joining the Airbus bandwagon with its decision to acquire two A320s for its flights between Manila, Cebu and Davao.

According to its president and Zesto magnate Alfredo Yao, the new jets will replace the Bae-146 aircraft, which it had earlier returned to their lessor. He explains that the decision to change aircraft type was not because of their rumored inability to meet lease payments but because the two planes were already old and fuel-inefficient.

Asian Spirit will also acquire 10 Xian MA60s from China for its local routes. Never mind that they’re not certified by US and UK flight regulators because they’ll only be used for domestic routes. Besides, all planes will have US-made engines and components, Yao says.

The total cost of the new investments? A cool $200 million.

And last but not the least, the airline will also be renamed to ... what else? ... Zest Air. Daxim L. Lucas

City forms team to consult PRA on Queensland row (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=21742)
By Mic Mic Villaflor

THE CITY government is preparing to send a team to the Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) in Manila to resolve issues involving the application of Queensland International Realty Corp. for its baywalk project in Matina Aplaya.
Vice Mayor Sara Duterte said the team, composed of lawyers, will discuss with PRA officials the possible conditions the city might require in the proposed “win-win solution” to restart construction works in the suspended project.
Duterte, however, said the team has not been totally formed yet after the City Legal Office (CLO) recommended to invite
PRA officials to come to Davao instead. Officials of the PRA were in the city last June to seek the help of local government to Queensland owner Teodorico Adarna from developing a property that sits on a 24-hectare reservation area based on Presidential Proclamation No. 20 issued by President Ramon Magsaysay.
Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang earlier said most members of the city council will only consider Adarna’s application for reclamation if he will totally relinquish the management of the project or enter into a foreshore lease agreement with the city government.

IMO, mas importante ang water, kse limited ang pwede pagkunan ng supply...unlike power, madaming alternatives, like what you listed. add ko lang, nuclear power plant. sana yun na lang ang gamitin natin, if I'm not mistaken, mas mura pag nuclear ang pagkukunan.

potable water supply is priceless, the local government should do everything to preserve this. although major source of electricity ng davao is hydropower, i'm sure there are many ways to generate electricity and many other places to built the dam. and by the way, when they say this could provide more jobs for the local people, anong klaseng mga jobs to? laborers para sa construction? and after the construction, i think ang matitira na lang are people who are to maintain it and i'm sure not much people are needed to maintain and only a few qualified people can do this. i'm not sure what long term jobs they're offering to the locals just to lure the government to approve this. potable water supply is irreplaceable. :ohno:

tubag nga o.t. pud.

true that current oil futures are declining, this rates are for a certain month (now it's for october shipments). a lot of other factors reflect what it is, one is the strengthening of the u.s. dollar. expect some changes month/s ahead. while here you can expect a change the following day, some countries have it months later. in all probability what you have now is rates reflecting a month or even more ago.

but something like this could happen and help the community to grow economically.

Aside from the added economic benefit to local business, Hedcor also lined up projects and programs for the benefit of its host communities in the Municipality of Sta. Cruz.
