:D davao light and power holds the key that drives dcwd stations pumping machines :D. seriously, for as long as aquifer is well protected along a well protected rainforest reserve, i wpould prefer underground sourced drinking water over surface water. after all, its waht davaos known for its internationally acclaimed quality of drinking water

correct... but we cannot forever rely on the ground water source.

if it means pump out water is more expensive than what is sourced from river, is there possibility it would cut down water rate in the future? at least cheaper than present rate? and when are they going to develop the river source?

ganito yun, kung DCWD ang sa baba... more chances na madumi na ang water or kaunti na lang ang matitira for distribution...

kung DCWD ang nasa taas, most probably mas kaunti na lang ang papasuk sa turbines ng Hedcor.

DCWD needs 400 kms elevation to be able to distribute properly.

if it means pump out water is more expensive than what is sourced from river, is there possibility it would cut down water rate in the future? at least cheaper than present rate? and when are they going to develop the river source?

no, more will be watered in the 3rd and linking pipes to the 2nd district.AFAIK. wala pa may time table ani.

I guess ang dam is 90% made of cement same as the reservoir in Malagos, di ba cemented di yun ? ok lets say Hedcor will guarantee a clean water & w/out displacing it and the assurance of the city council would DCWD agrees?

what if they get tax breaks for this expansion? its understandable to look at the concerns of dcwd, but equally at the back of my mind, commercial interest above economic interest of general consumer could be behind the dcwad move. i mean why only now all of a sudden. hedcoe was already granted environmental clearance to proceed i guess. why only now? i mean what a waste of opportunities for this investment could bring in to davao city/region if withrawn. they are to invest now. the economic benefits it will bring. davao city needs own reliable power energy to attract more industries and investment. to keep competetiveness, etc

DUTERTE: I won’t run for president (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=21752)
By Mic Mic Villaflor

MAYOR RODRIGO Duterte said he has no ambitions of running for the presidency in the 2010 elections nor any other post in the National Government for that matter.
Duterte said he will retire if his term as mayor of Davao City is finished and will not accept any post offered by the next president.
“I dream only of what I can aspire and not of what I cannot be,” Duterte said. “If my term ends I will retire.”
The mayor issued the statement in the light of rumors that he was offered by the opposition to run for president in 2010 during the recent visit of Erap in Davao City. Duterte gave Erap a warm welcome and even accompanied the former president in a motorcade in Bankerohan.
He said politics was never mentioned during the visit especially that the former president is quite conscious of the constitutional prohibition.
Duterte is now serving his last term as mayor of Davao City.
Earlier, the mayor’s daughter vice mayor Sara Duterte said their family will rally behind their father in whatever political plans he has for 2010.
“We will rally behind him,” Vice Mayor Sara Duterte said.
Asked whether Duterte was offered to run for president or vice president, the vice mayor said her father has not mentioned anything to them in that regard.

mga goys i just got back from city hall. i saw my good friend there and he told me some good news ( or is it bad for the rest. i dont know. you decide.)

he told me that the davao city overland transit terminal will be closed down in the next few months. he told me that two new terminals will be constructed. one in the north, panacan, and one in the south, toril. so this means all buses that comes from the north will stop in panacan. all buses from the south will stop in toril. so this means no more provincial buses will be allowed entry past these terminals. this is in preparation daw for the lrt. in the meantime, only jeeps and taxis will ferry the passengers to and from the city proper to these terminals.

ano? good or bad?

‘The Thank You Girls’, also a celebration of Mindanao music

NOT ONLY a showcase of Mindanaoan acting prowess, The ‘Thank You’ Girls also promotes the beautiful contemporary music from Mindanao performers.
“When I made this movie, I did not only target to promote Davao and the acting ability of Davaoeños. I also wanted to promote music from the island,” said director Charliebebs “Bebs” Gohetia.
“I want Mindanaoan artists, Davaoeños in particular, to shine,” Bebs said, adding that Mindanao has lots of talented artists who are not given the opportunity to be heard.
Among the Mindanaoan acts listed in the soundtrack are Lizard Chips, Sidecrash, Chui Sulit, Chris Uy & Steve Marzke (all from Davao City), Keyk and Reggztheory (both from Tagum City), Gasulina and Superflirts (both from Cagayan de Oro).
Bebs said he got some of the songs from imeem.com. Others were recommended by R.G. Alama of Muzika del Sur and Chris Fabian of Mindanao Times. One even wrote songs just for the movie after reading a newspaper announcement.
“The songs are all very beautiful,” Bebs said. “They deserve to be on the radio.”
He said all of the featured Mindanaoan artists are unsigned by any major label, and have the potential to make it big in the music industry.
“In fact, they are very much better that most of those signed Manila-based artists whose songs are being played on the radio,” he said.
Giving upbeat band songs are Mindanao bands Lizard Chips (contributing Karma, Rubberband, and Paalam), Reggztheory (bisrocking with Kalibangon and Saliva), Sidecrash (rocking with Lilipas and Sama-sama) Gasulina (giving The Pills and Fueled) and Keyk (performing FSL).
Chris Uy wrote the Crown Me Queen and With My Bestfriend just for the movie after reading a newspaper report.
Chui Sulit, friend of actor EJ Pantujan, submitted the melancholic Exasperation
Bebs actually wanted to feature more homegrown acts but has to drop some songs since he could not contact the bands.
Friends from Manila also contributed songs for the movie.
Michael Cruz of the Singing Bee fame contributed Naroon.
Kampai sang Starsick. Haphazard did the Churvaloo.
Roxymorons contributed the most — Boom, Paghihintay, Gunita, Christmas R&R, and Anywhere.
The indie-movie is currently showing at Cinema 2 of Gaisano Mall of Davao. It will compete this October in a filmfest in Canada.
Aside from EJ Pantujan, the movie also stars Davao first-time actor Pidot Villocino, July Jimenez, Kit Poliquit, and Kim Vergara. Stand-up comedian Gie Salonga, brother of Lea Salonga, is the only Manila-based actor in the main cast.
The story follows the road-trip of six guys in their quest to win in miss gay beauty contest from Davao to Cagayan de Oro.

Landco bidding war erupts
By Jenniffer B. Austria
Source (http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=business1_sept12_2008)

Metro Pacific Investments Corp., the local unit of Hong Kong’s First Pacific Co. Ltd., yesterday said it will agree to take over Landco Pacific Corp. if its partners fail to launch a similar bid.

Metro Pacific said in a disclosure to the stock exchange that the company and its joint venture partners in Landco—AB Holdings Corp. and Alfred Xerez Burgos—had agreed to a third party valuation of the property firm.

AB Holdings and Burgos, under the agreement, have until Oct. 31 or not later than Nov. 30 to give notice that they will buy Metro Pacific’s shares in Landco. If AB Holdings and Burgos agreed to purchase Metro Pacific’s shares, they have until Dec. 28 to acquire the stocks.

However, if AB Holdings and Burgos failed to give the notice and acquire the shares despite its declared intention, Metro Pacific, under the agreement, will have the right to purchase all the shareholdings of the two groups.

“The purchase price of either the shareholdings of Metro Pacific or the shareholdings of each AB Holdings and Burgos in Landco is not yet known at this time and is dependent on the results of the Landco valuation which shall be completed no later than Oct. 15,” Metro Pacific said.

Metro Pacific, meanwhile, said it would extend P500 million in short-term loan to Landco pending the valuation to enable it to meet maturing obligations and fund working capital.

Metro Pacific chairman Manuel Pangilinan last month said the company was making a strategic review of its real estate business, including its possible sale.

“We don’t know if we still want to be in that business,” Pangilinan told reporters earlier.

Pangilinan said Landco was facing tough competition from other big players in the industry, like Ayala Land, Robinsons Land and Megaworld. Landco also faces the usual cycle risk of the property industry.

Pangilinan, though, noted that Landco had succeeded in creating a niche market and established a good brand name in the property sector.

Landco has several huge projects in the pipeline. Landco earlier said it would spend P3.5 billion this year to finance construction of new leisure communities as well as hotel and residential projects.

It is set to unveil the first phase of the Playa Laiya project in San Juan, Batangas. The 129-hectare development is envisioned to be one of the largest beach communities in the Pjilippines.

Another leisure community it is launching this year is the Playa Azalea in Samal Island in Davao. Landco is developing the 33-hectare project in joint venture Anflocor of the Floirendos.

Landco will also offer two high-end residential projects in Pampanga and Zamboaga del Norte.

The real estate company is venturing into hotel development with a planned 200-room hotel in Playa Calatagan in Batangas estimated at P600 million.

kung jeep lang man mo dagan sa city proper may pa bus.

i guess aside from the impeding new bus terminals, we should have jeepney terminals also. para wala nang pick up just anywhere. people just have to walk up to the terminal for their rides...that way there will be no traffic. ano say nyo?

mga goys i just got back from city hall. i saw my good friend there and he told me some good news ( or is it bad for the rest. i dont know. you decide.)

he told me that the davao city overland transit terminal will be closed down in the next few months. he told me that two new terminals will be constructed. one in the north, panacan, and one in the south, toril. so this means all buses that comes from the north will stop in panacan. all buses from the south will stop in toril. so this means no more provincial buses will be allowed entry past these terminals. this is in preparation daw for the lrt. in the meantime, only jeeps and taxis will ferry the passengers to and from the city proper to these terminals.

ano? good or bad?

good news to...for, it's better for Toril and Panacan, added foot traffic para sa businesses dun. :D

of course, ang mystery ngayon is ano ang gagawin sa old terminal if that happens....ang vote ko is a new City hall!!!

well, a logical may be reasonable but logic as a mode of reasoning is only intended to disintegrate one's mind into something messy. See for example:

if a dog is a cat, and a cat is a mouse, then a dog is cat. Don't think of it as such? nakakaloko at yun!

But basing on the study of meanings of words such as semantics siguro mas apt if one is "semantical" rather than "logical". Kaya lang sematics too if used to much can be give you headaches too...siguro balanced lang of both.

A Scoop of Durian Ice Cream started it all!
December 5, 2007

http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/7805/durian1ne7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Davao City– I am once again in one of my favorite cities in the Philippines. The land of DURIAN ICE CREAM…

I've been frequenting the place since the early 90s. In fact, during the time of President Ramos, I was here almost six times a year or more (I remember our provincial trips all over Mindanao then was almost monthly because he wanted to promote the region as an investment area. In fact, it was during his tenure were the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area was created).

I was asked once what place in the Philippines I am willing to relocate or work and i said i wouldn't mind to be assigned in Baguio and Davao. I don't know but I have this special affection for this place. Not all the places i've been to in the Philippines have elicited this kind of affinity and level of comfort. (I've been to Batanes up north down to Tawi-Tawi down south and this is one thing I am grateful to FVR because as his close-in reporter then, I got to visit far-flung places in the country during his six-year term.)

Unfortunately, when I moved to the corporate world in 2001, my travels to this place have lessened. Therefore, each visit to this city is something that i look forward to. I am here for the Philippine Art Awards-Mindanao awarding ceremonies later and despite the huge tasks that we do here to ensure the event's success this afternoon, it seems it isn't work at all. I am having FUN here!

It's always nice to see old friends from way, way back. Though we seldom see each other, somehow the bond that was strengthened by time is as strong as ever, and getting stronger in fact after my every visit. Last night, I was with Philippine Star Mindanao bureau chief Edith Regalado. This lady is such a charm. I call her "Princess of Davao." Through her, I got acquainted with members of the Davao-based media and one of them is Dennis Jay Santos of the Philippine Daily Inquirer, who was also with us last night.

It felt good to see the two of them. It feels even better to look back and reminisce of how one beautiful friendship blossomed through the years. We were so engaged with out chit-chat that lasted til 1.30 am today (Bitin!).

Dennis asked how Edith and I became friends and we both exclaimed (ala duet) "Durian Ice Cream!" and we laughed. Yes, a scoop of Durian ice cream started our 15-year friendship. I vividly recall, I was busy faxing a story to Manila back in 1992 at the old PIA office and I was so harassed when suddenly a jolly lady approached me with a broad smile holding a scoop of ice cream in a cone and said "o, mag-ice cream ka muna. durian yan, especialty ng davao."

I never ate durian fruit in my whole life (until now) and i don't like its smell but instead of saying no to her, i gladly accepted the ice cream and i never had any regrets. From then on, it became one of my favorite flavors. I never miss eating durian ice cream whenever i go to Davao. In fact, I just had one a while ago hehe.

So when I'm back in Manila and think of Durian ice cream, i will not only relive the experience of savoring its exotic taste (Sadly, durian ice cream is not available in Manila), i will remember a great friendship. Nestle Durian ice cream started it all….

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is asking the Land Transportation Office to go slow in the apprehension of motorcycle riders based on the modified motorcycle law. He said it hits the poorest of the poor who resort to soliciting passengers to make both ends meet.
Duterte said “It does not mean that if Manila people want it, automatically everyone wants it, please consider, wala nay laing panginabuhian nang mga tawhana (these people will no longer have means of livelihood,” Duterte said, addressing a group of motorcycle owners who sought his help at City Hall Thursday. read more... Davao school and Malaysian firm train tourism students

DAVAO CITY — A technical and vocational school in Davao del Norte has tied up with a Malaysian company in training local students for six months. Dr. Francisco P. dela Pena Jr., chief executive officer and president of the Panabo City-based Aces Polytechnic College, said students will undergo taining by TransAsia Vacation Training Center, a Malaysian company with links to international tourism-related firms.

Students however have to pay $600 each to avail of the six-month long international training. Dato’ Dr. Baha Hj Nordin, vice-president of the Malaysian company, said they have already accepted students from Zamboanga City and that he is looking forward to accommodating at least 50 students from Mr. dela Pena’s school.

Mr. Nordin said the training would provide the students the opportunity to work in Malaysia. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

BTW, naa diay nahitabo nga ani sa Dabaw??? Wala may balita (or maybe it's just me who barely reads the news lol). A mini-Wordcamp was held in Davao and was attended by no less than Matt Mullenweg, founder of WORDPRESS!!! Although dili ko wordpress user, this is something great for Davao, right? Anyone agree? :D

Mr. WordPress in Davao

* Blogie
* 4 September 2008 – 2:00 am

Matt Mullenweg, creator of this fantastic blogging software that powers AngDabawenyo.com, is in town for WordCamp. He arrived yesterday all the way from San Francisco via Manila, and will stay up to Friday. Even after such a long flight, he was up for a little stroll, so I took him around People’s Park.

At first, he was quite soft-spoken and seems very humble for a man of his standing. At least on the Internet, he is one of the most influential and easily-recognizable personalities around. It is good to know people like Matt — inspires a desire to reach out for the stars and yet stay grounded.

I asked him if he had any preconceived notions of Davao City. You see, I was surprised that he (nor his colleagues at Automattic.com) never asked me about security concerns. When I invited Matt to attend WordCamp in Manila and in Davao, the invitation was accepted without any apparent qualms.

Matt said some people actually did tell him that he might need a security team while in Davao! But he said he had checked it out. I guess he decided there was no risk. Good thing he’s here to find out for himself that Davao really is a progressive and peaceful city.

Here’s a photo of us having dinner with Matt — Bob & Feyma Martin, Ted Padova, Rodney Jao and Chattee Lara. We were at Ranchero Grill to treat Matt to barbecue Davao-style.

RP initiative to renew call to save mountains at North Pole

Davao City (13 September) -- The Human Development International in partnership with the Philippine Norway Foundation in Skjeberg, Norway is poised to re-echo the Call to Save the Mountains of the World at the summit of the highest mountain in Scandinavia - Mount Galdhøpiggen (2,469 m asl) from September 12-15, 2008.

Looking back, the same call was first done at the Philippines' tallest mountain, Mount Apo during the celebration of the International Year of the Mountains in 2002 and since then has been continually re-echoed in many places including at Mount Everest and has raised awareness on the need to save and restore mountains.

This upcoming call at Mount Galdhøpiggen will be of great significance in the continuing advocacy to save the mountains. It is the first call of its kind to be done at the Arctic - North Pole (Arctic is the area around the Earth's North Pole that includes parts of Canada, Greenland - a territory of Denmark, Russia, Alaska, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and Finland as well as the Arctic Ocean) at a time when melting of the polar ice cap due to global warming has raised serious global concern.

The Call to Save the Mountains, aside from reducing the use of fossil fuels and initiate adaptation measures like the use of cleaner energies, etc., is a vital mitigating measure in addressing global warming the fact that mountains are the habitat of forest which are natural sink of carbon dioxide that causes the warming of the earth's surface.

John Ryan Largo, HDI Founder said that the call at Mount Galdhøpiggen will give further impetus as the call moves towards becoming a global movement that derived strength from the endorsement of the former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan in 1993, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, Former President Fidel V. Ramos and other international leaders and influential individuals.

The call at the Arctic - North Pole is likewise in keeping with the efforts of the Human Development International to forefront Philippines' international advocacy effort to address climate change.

The call will be spearheaded by the HDI Founder and accompanied by Kjell Roar Iversen, Chairperson of the Philippine Norway Foundation based in Skjeberg, Norway and Laida Quidato - Ambassadress of the Call to Save the Mountains of the World. The trio team will jump off to the top from Spiterstulen lodge in Visdalen deviating of having to pass the dangerous Styggebreen glacier but still will be subjected to a strenuous climb of 1,300 meters and the cold arctic weather before reaching the summit. "I will ask the City Council for the amendment," Duterte said Friday prior to the unveiling of the city's "Death Clock" -- a billboard at the entrance of the City Hall where statistics on deaths due to smoking will be posted weekly. read on..

Solution to Queensland case 'plausible': VM

DAVAO City Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte said the solution presented by Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon regarding the Queensland case is "legally plausible".

"The idea is legally plausible according to other lawyers," Duterte said, adding that this could somehow be used in the process of fixing the problem.

Marañon lobbies for a rejection of Queensland's request for endorsement and for the city to follow-up with Philippine Reclamation Authority (PRA) for the area to be granted to the city.

"By then, we will ask them to lease the property from the city or PRA should they want to continue operating there," Marañon said in an interview Wednesday.

"You cannot own something that is owned by the city by virtue of a presidential proclamation. So para naman di masayang ang investment nila and for the city not to get tangled in a legal mess, mas mabuti kung ganito ang magiging arrangement. Kikita pa ang city. After all, it is not only Queensland which is operating along the areas," he added.

i've made a study sa davao city hall last semester as a part of our requirements sa Architectural theory and found out na di na xa in good condition. hindi na rin xa nagpopromote ng good working environment and poses health problems. add mo pa ang lack of proper ventilation and light entry which i think costly. hahay. i wish mapalitan na ang existing city hall ng davao at gawin nalang xang museum.

sir francis(PH_Man) here's another interesting facts of Davao Oriental...

At the Philippines’ eastern edge, Pusan Point
11 January 2008

http://img82.imageshack.us/img82/2779/pusan1qv8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
This white cross stands near the cliff’s edge at Pusan Point.

Caraga is not only famous for its century old, Spanish colonial era church but also, by reason of geography, its claim to be the easternmost point in the country which is punctuated by Pusan Point. This landmark is accessed in the town of Santiago but is still a few kilometers from town over rolling hills, coconut groves and small fields. One should ride a 4×4 vehicle but the best way to enjoy the trail is to hire a habalhabal, from the town or in Caraga but the latter entails a lot of expense as it’s quite distant.

One knows when Pusan Point is near when the trail starts to go downhill and comes to a clearing. A marker officially denotes the importance of the site while near the cliff’s edge, a railing and cemented steps can be found. A little farther to the left, a large white cross can be seen.

http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/1268/pusan3ax9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Close up of a pool and its rough rock surfaces.

While one can explore the rocky cliff, one has to take care not to cut one’s skin as the surface is very sharp. Slippers are not advisable as you could easily scratch your feet and toes. Be sure to have a good grip as slipping can have fatal consequences. There are, however, several hidden but shallow pools in between crevices or outcrops.

http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/9236/pusan2re8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
The shallow cliff drop off at the point.

There are no beach like portions here where one can take a bath as its really very rugged. During the millenium sunrise watch, visitors massed here to lay stake to the claim that they were the first ones to see it in the country. Unfortunately, the weather was not cooperative. It was cloudy and it drizzled but the sun seemed to have managed a peek.

mga goys i just got back from city hall. i saw my good friend there and he told me some good news ( or is it bad for the rest. i dont know. you decide.)

he told me that the davao city overland transit terminal will be closed down in the next few months. he told me that two new terminals will be constructed. one in the north, panacan, and one in the south, toril. so this means all buses that comes from the north will stop in panacan. all buses from the south will stop in toril. so this means no more provincial buses will be allowed entry past these terminals. this is in preparation daw for the lrt. in the meantime, only jeeps and taxis will ferry the passengers to and from the city proper to these terminals.

ano? good or bad?

bad xa for me 'cause i hate ridin' jeepneys in terms of time and stress. i always get annoyed especially to "conductors/pilot" kasi they're the most reason why matagal ang travel ng jeep and they trick passengers basta lang mapuno ila jeep (though i understand them now na). i am cautious sa time so it's bad for me. but okay ko sa plano kay it will lessen the traffic of davao main streets and helps in the peace and order sa city.
dapat matagal n nilang ginawa yan.

cheers,

i guess aside from the impeding new bus terminals, we should have jeepney terminals also. para wala nang pick up just anywhere. people just have to walk up to the terminal for their rides...that way there will be no traffic. ano say nyo?

i agree kuya @xzibit31. maganda sana ung BRT kasi mas magingze ang city streets natin kaya lang eh malabo xa mangyari. ah! how about we create JRT instead? para xang BRT pero instead of "B" for bus eh J for jeepney ang PUV na gagamitin. uhm.. not necessarily na gayahin talga 100% and system ng BRT but some of its characteristics lang like as follows:

1. jeeps have proper and permanent loading and loading area or Terminals all over the city. ung other areas na di na-include within the said designated places should not be allowed na may mag load or mag unload ng passenger and those who are caught should be fined.

2. loading and unloading area or "Terminals" should be develop properly to fit its purpose. dapat may standard design ang terminal at dapat pareho-pareho ang concept ng design pati na ang "kulay". mas maganda kung may davaoeno-inspired ang concept. okay pud mg designate ug authorized vendors and barker

3. all jeepneys should have limited time to stay in a certain terminal. this is important para alay mag abuso na drayber na hastang kadugay mg park sa isa ka terminal and also para ma-check na alay ga overload and ga kabit kabit which is gina prohibit sa city.

4. all jeeps shoud have proper and standard design (e.g. same color, plain and simple but formal). pde pud na i-color coding ang color sa jeep according sa iya route like "maroon jeepneys for mintal-roxas, calinan-roxas" , "green jeepneys for toril-roxas,catigan roxas" ,etc.
maau ni xa para dili sakit sa mata ug dili gubot ang street tan awun.

5. .....add nalang kau mga kuya if u have something in mind.:)

with these steps, mas magiging efficient ang flow ng traffic sa davao streets with the "systematized puj transportation". and kahit na jeepney lang ang main mode of transpo natin dito sa dabadaba, eh "professionalized" naman ito. it also creates additional "stable jobs" sa mga city-folks natin. lastly, it will also make our beloved city an even more "first world looking city".

watcha think guys?

i've made a study sa davao city hall last semester as a part of our requirements sa Architectural theory and found out na di na xa in good condition. hindi na rin xa nagpopromote ng good working environment and poses health problems. add mo pa ang lack of proper ventilation and light entry which i think costly. hahay. i wish mapalitan na ang existing city hall ng davao at gawin nalang xang museum.

the original structure is about 80-90 years old. witness yata si nyor ambi sa pagsugod.

seriously, it is about time the we have new hall in another site, complete with all other city agencies.

btw, ano-ano ba ung ibang local govt agencies na dapat magkakasama?
so if the city hall relocates, ano gagawin sa Sangguniang panlungsod, di ba mejo bago2x lang yan...?

P500M beach project in the offing
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

AN INVESTOR from Thailand will soon be processing necessary documents to develop a beach resort in Sta. Maria town in Davao del Sur, with a project cost of P500 million.

THE chief of the Board of Investments (BOI) in Mindanao Gil Dureza told Sun.Star Davao the investor will start development works in the area as soon as all requirements set by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) are completed.

Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration

"This project is not yet registered with the BOI, but I understand that its papers are being processed with the SEC. We will soon give them the requirements for registration," Dureza said in an interview.

He added that BOI will still endorse the project to the tourism department in Manila before it will be registered with the agency.

Dureza assured that the project will be registered before the year ends.

"The investor might have seen the potential of the place," Dureza said, adding that the quality of sand in the beaches in Sta. Maria can be compared to Boracay.

Dureza claimed that not only beaches in Davao del Sur have potential for improvement and development, but also in Davao Oriental.

"We want to propose to the provincial government (of Davao Oriental) to come up with a good material which will be presented to investors. We need to sell Davao Oriental to investors. There are very good beaches in the area," Dureza said.

Best Western to set up 10 more hotels in key cities nationwide

THE WORLD’S biggest hotel chain plans to increase its portfolio by building 10 more hotels in key locations by 2010.

Raymond Howe, Best Western regional operations manager for Asia, said the hotel chain is in talks with hotel owners in Cebu City and Boracay, and is looking at Subic, Makati, Quezon City, Fort Bonifacio in Taguig, Pasig, Davao City and Bohol for their other locations.

"There is a need for extension. Asia will become an emerging giant beating Europe, that is why the need for [more] hotels," he told reporters on Friday.

The 10 new hotels will be in addition to the existing Best Western La Corona and Best Western Astor, both located in Manila.

"There is a strong demand for city hotels and resort destinations in the Philippines as it continues to attract business and leisure markets from both local and around the world," said Cyndy Tan Jabarata, president of Tajara Leisure and Hospitality Group, Inc. Tajara Leisure is Best Western’s partner in establishing the brand in the Philippines.

Ms. Jabarata said hotel owners want to tie up with Best Western because of its international network.

"When you run an independently owned hotel, the challenge is how to get it known. The goal of the brand is to increase the number of occupancy in a hotel," Ms. Jabarata said.

She said Best Western is popular to travelers and receives an average of $2 million worth of global reservations a day.

Best Western La Corona, the oldest of the two brands in the country has an average occupancy rate of 90%, while Best Western Astor has an 80% occupancy rate, Ms. Jabarata said.

Best Western provides marketing, reservations and operational support to over 4,000 independently owned hotels in 80 countries and hosts about 400,000 guests a night worldwide.

It has two sub-brands — the Best Western Core, which caters to the mid-market hotels, and the Best Western Premium, which addresses the high-end market.

"The brand is the fastest-growing chain in Asia. We expect to add 60 hotels in China and 30 hotels in Thailand by 2010," Mr. Howe said. — Kristine Jane R. Liu

Escorts of VIPs visiting Davao City barred from carrying long firearms
By Edith Regalado
Monday, September 15, 2008

DAVAO CITY – Security escorts of prominent personalities, including politicians and other ranking government officials, visiting this southern city are strictly prohibited from carrying high-powered firearms.

Chief Superintendent Andres Caro II, Southern Mindanao police director, issued this guideline after noting that bodyguards of visiting VIPs have been brandishing long firearms in the city’s central business district and residential areas as well.

Caro said this not only causes undue alarm among residents, but also unnecessarily depicts the city as a war zone instead of its being the tourism and economic hub in this part of the country.

“It is already affecting the image of Davao City as one of Asia’s most livable cities. It would not be good for this city that is considered as the leading growth center in this part of the country,” he added.

Caro said the bodyguards of visiting VIPs are asked to deposit their firearms at designated checkpoints in the different entry points to the city.

“These long firearms of security escorts are not necessary since personnel of the Davao City police and Task Force Davao can very well take care of the security of the visitors while in the city,” he said.

Caro said there have been several complaints from civilians and even government officials who have figured in near mishaps or “mis-encounters” with arrogant security personnel of certain visiting VIPs who violated traffic rules.

Caro said security escorts should only carry properly documented short firearms while they are with their principals here.

Now on its third year, 2008's Moonrise filmfest features more documentaries than ever.

Tourist arrivals up in 1st quarter
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

VISITORS from East Asian countries have contributed the biggest share in the number of tourist arrivals in Davao City during the first quarter of this year.

In a report obtained by Sun.Star Davao from the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Southern Mindanao, the number of visitors from East Asia has increased by 14.08 percent from January to March, as compared to the same period last year.

DOT-Southern Mindanao said that for the period, a total of 15,121 foreign travelers arrived in Davao City. Of the figure, 5,970 were from countries in East Asia, such China, Hongkong, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

It added that of these countries, Japan has the biggest volume of visitors to Davao City with 2,839, followed by South Korea with 1,943.

The report also revealed that the number of tourists from North American countries also contributed to the growth of tourism industry in Davao City.

DOT said that the number of US citizens who visited the city during the period was pegged at 3,401, higher by 59.30 percent as compared to the same period in 2007, which was pegged at 2,135.

Meanwhile, significant increase was also noted in the number of tourist arrivals from Europe during the period.

An increase of 94.26 percent was recorded in the arrival of tourists from European countries, such as Germany, France, Denmark, Italy, Switzerland, United Kingdom, Spain, and Norway.
The total number of domestic travellers, on the other hand, was pegged at 137,212.

Meanwhile, DOT reported that a total of 202,001 tourists visited the Davao Region during the first quarter of the year, most of them traveled to Davao City.

This volume of arrivals, DOT said, has an increase of two percent as compared to the same period last year with 198,456 tourist arrivals.

The increase is attributed to DOT's extensive promotions of the region as a major tourism destination through the holding of festivals and events region-wide.

DOT said these promotions were conducted with the full support and cooperation of the local government units (LGUs), which hosted several of these activities.

These events, DOT added, played a major role in encouraging travel among domestic and foreign visitors despite travel advisories.

The total number of domestic and foreign travelers in Davao City was sourced from a data submitted by 19 hotels, six inns, and nine pension houses to the regional office of the DOT.

Honeybees to lick worsening poverty

HONEYBEES will soon be mass-produced in Davao Region to produce honey for export, now in big demand in China.

Vicente Lao, chair of the Mindanao Business Council, said the production and export of honeybee is one of the region's solutions to lick the gnawing problem of poverty in this part of the country.

"Although this region is growing, there are more and more poor people growing poorer. Poverty is getting worse in this region," Lao told a recent meeting of regional planners in Davao City.

Lao has assured of a huge market in China just waiting for the Philippines to produce tons and tons of honey and export it to Chinese traders and importers looking for new suppliers of honey in Asia.

A massive Beekeeping Training program has been set up recently for various stakeholders, conducted by the University of the Philippines in Mindanao (UPMin).

A total of 30 stakeholders from surrounding villages in Mintal, Davao City, together with participants from the private firms and non-government organizations took a weeklong training at UPMin with resource persons led by Dr. Cleofas Cervancia, director of UP Los Banos Institute of Biologocal Science.

Newly trained beekeepers from the first batch of trainees are expected to start work on 22 beehive pilot farms that had been set up at UPMin.

Beekeeping or "Apiculture" is expected to become one of the region's new emerging industries that will contribute to exports and help in the economic growth of the region, according to Lao.

Lao said the bee industry will definitely help address the worsening poverty in the region as well as the whole island of Mindanao" because it is accessible to many, from housewives to small enterprises to corporate farms."

The Davao Region and Mindanao itself, according to Lao, has "a strong competitive advantage in this industry because we have no typhoons, the bees can produce all year round and we have very good coconut production which is the staple food of bees. If this grows into a backyard industry where labor is home-based, a housewife can attend to three or four hives and can bring her an extra P2,500 per month."

Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz expressed optimism that the new emerging industry of beekeeping and honey production in the region will contribute substantially to the growth of exports in this part of the country." We're looking at the bee industry among the top priorities in the Otop (one-town, one-product) program. There's a lot of bright potentials in this new industry." Cruz said.

The trade undersecretary gave assurances to stakeholders that funds could be sourced from various government agencies and foreign agencies interested to support the growth of a new, emerging honey industry in the Philippines.

“We’re going to open three hotels, one each in Boracay, Cebu and Metro Manila before the year ends,” Best Western’s Raymond Howe told the BusinessMirror.

Howe, regional operations manager for Asia, added they are also expecting to open up to five hotels in the country next year. A second hotel in Cebu is being eyed while one would be in Davao.

Top chefs spice up Davao's cooking demo
By Ianne Monforte
From my kitchen

THE local culinary scene has certainly been richer, more vibrant with the visit of several outstanding chefs who generously shared their expertise to Davao's food enthusiasts.

There never was a dull moment in our culinary scene. Almost always, there is a festival going on or launching a new menu at a hotel and restaurant.

What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers

Even in festivals organized by trade organizations, one of the crowd-drawers is usually the food area as evidenced in the recent event initiated by Unilever Foodsolutions and SunriseFoods Corporation (operator of the famous local food chain Banoks Ihaw-Ihaw).

The 1st open Cooking Demo and Showdown entitled "Tayo na at Magluto sa Banoks" at one of Banoks outlet on August 16-17, 2008 was a concrete proof that food is truly a major consideration.

During the demo, everybody had a good time food tripping from the new concocted flavors of Mindanao's freshest catch.

Visiting top chefs enhanced the wisdom, expertise and let's say, basic love for good food.

Cooking demonstrations conducted by these young chefs are getting to a regular affair in Davao and 2008 is definitely a good year for us.

Here are the two guest chefs who came and conquered local palates with Victoria Plaza's Food Department chef Fernando Martin who stands out during the showdown because of his very own recipe "Beef Durian in Madayaw Sauce" which really a must try.

Those who participated in the event were chef Paolo Sia, sous chef of Unilever Food Solutions, Manila. He handles recipe development, menu development, manages the operations of the Culinary Kitchen. He also conducts culinary and HACCP trainings.

Chef Datu Pendatun, a Mindanaoan, embraced vegetarianism while studying Anthropolgy at the University of the Philippines in Baguio.

His gastronomic interests took a complete turn when he entered the Center for Asian Culinary Studies where he received a Diploma for Culinary and Pastry Arts with honors.

He apprenticed in Caf‚ Ysabel, Ziggurat Cuisine, and in the Indian Kitchen of Spices Restaurant of the Peninsula Manila.

Datu started to work for Unilever Foodsolutions as a chef-consultant in Mindanao in 2005.

In 2006, Datu became the sales chef handling both Visayas and Mindanao areas where he is heavily involved with cooking demonstrations, recipe engineering, and account development.

Japanese investors eyeing
P8 billion projects in Mindanao

BUTUAN CITY (PNA) — Investors appeared unfazed by the peace and order problem in some parts in Mindanao, as Japanese businessmen plan to invest Php 8 billion to put up plantations in the southern island.

The Japanese inves-tors need 4,000 hectares for agricultural plantation such as cavendish banana, pineapple, rubber and other farm products, said Board of Investment Southern Mindanao Extension head Engr. Gil Dureza.

He said the Japanese investors are eyeing in Central, Southern or Northeastern Mindanao.

The area for the banana project is within PALMA (Pigcawayan, Aleosan, Libungan Midsayap, Alamada).

However, the investors temporarily deferred their project as government security forces are still clearing the said areas where there is an ongoing conflict between the government Armed forces and separatist group.

The Japanese investor is also looking big area in Davao del Sur.

Dureza said once this project is realized, they would be able to generate higher tax revenues to the government and provide employment.

Investments expansion was also noted in several areas in the region.

The Board of Investment included the Php400-million expansion of Flying V, P174-million A & J Processing in General Santos City, Php 6 million Hog Tech Corporation also of General Santos City, Php 4 million Monkayo (Compostela Valley) Commodity Corp. for banana chips production, and the Php 260-million low-cost housing project of HLC Corp. in Davao City.

The Board of Investment also facilitated the requirements of nationally-registered projects like the condominium projects of Filinvest and Consunji and the business process outsourcing of Western Wats and HLC call center.

Dureza added tourism is among the investment priority areas and their proposed activity in Thailand will be in cooperation with the provincial and local government units and the Foreign Trade Attaches.

Despite of some abnormalities on peace and order in some pocket areas in Central Mindanao and Zamboanga Peninsula, southern island registered more improvements in its performance, the Mindanao Economic and Development Council (MEDco) reported on Monday.

The MEDCo report indicated that growth in the economy of Mindanao posted acceleration in 2007 with a 7.2-growth percent in 2006, little bet higher performance in the second quarter of 2008.

Last year, Northeastern Mindanao (Caraga region) was the best performer as its economy propelled with the entry of mining investors, mostly foreign business group.

Its economy soared to an 8.6-percent growth in 2007 from 6.0 percent in 2006 due to the outstanding performance on the industry sector, particularly mining.

A hefty 76.1-percent growth was posted in mining as a result of the continuing increase in mining production, MEDco report added.

Big contributory factor to the continuing increase of economic activity in the region in terms of revenues and employment are the operation of Philsaga Mining Corp. in Bayugan 3, Rosario, Agusan del Sur and SR Metal Mining in Tubay, Agusan del Norte, it was learned.

Philsaga Mining spearheaded by its President Retired Army Col. Samual G. Afdal, is also engaged in rice farm production without any interest and reforestation and other income generation projects to help poor farmers in Agusan del Sur province and nearby areas, it was also learned.

DENR sets aside P2.6M for Mt. Apo management

THE chair of the Regional Land Use Committee (RLUC), a special committee of the Regional Development Council (RDC)-Southern Mindanao, revealed that a total of P2.6 million was allotted by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) for the management of the Mt. Apo Natural Park in Digos City.

Neda-Southern Mindanao director Nicasio Angelo Agustin, who also chairs the RLUC, told Sun.Star Davao that this was reported last week during the 4th joint meeting of the RLUC and the Regional Committee on Sustainable Development (RSCD), another special committee of the RDC.

What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers

"DENR informed us that it has allotted around P2.6 million for the Protected Area Management Board (Pamb) to improve their capability for the management of the Mt. Apo Natural Park," Agustin said.

He said DENR has also informed the council that it will also spearhead a workshop for stakeholders in Kapatagan, such as local government of Digos, municipalities of Bansalan, Sta. Cruz, and the National Commission on Indigenous Peoples and Certificate of Ancestral Domain title holders to harmonize their responsible management plans for Mt. Apo.

During the meeting, Agustin said the discussion of issues pertaining to the land use and sustainable development of Kapatagan is relevant considering the tragedy that struck Barangay Masara in Maco, Compostela Valley Province.

"RLUC and RCSD directed concerned agencies to continue pursuing recommendations for the restoration and ecological preservation of Barangay Kapatagan," Agustin said.

He added that the recommendations were endorsed by Task Force Kapatagan, an ad hoc body created by RLUC and RCSD, to address the adverse impact of the establishment of agricultural plantations in the barangay.

Barangay Kapatagan is within the Mt. Apo Natural Park, a protected area. (JGRS)

I realize how you really need a clear explanation for that. Actually such choice of words are only for casual talks or something or if, perhaps, you are really sort of a Brit who is keen on choice of words, then, i will give another word apt for which I think is not appropriate for me to do as what i sensed out the way you asked that question. not surprising though bec they come from very trying hard wannabe city which is full of imaginary line of tall buildings in its skyline. the rustic city has boring flat skyline ever. truth. fact

WTG 4 - Ligid Island dive site (passes government assessment)

http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/7875/grthidewysdivethumbnailnf8.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

The dive site in Ligid Island is the first site of the Island Garden City of Samal that passed the assessment made by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR XI). Ligid Dive Site is backed by an ordinance of the city government of Samal City as guide on what to do and what not to do in the assigned site.

Based on the assessment the ground is host to rich and healthy rocks and corrals where school of fish of different varieties abound as well as their spawning ground.

The resources underneath is what we want to be protected that is why the city government has to passed an ordinance to regulate the usage of the site,” DENR official Manny Isip said.

He however said that there are still many potential dive sites in Samal where two are found in Kaputian both facing the Pacific Ocean and declared by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquartic Resources as fish sanctuaries.

The other two designated dive sites in the Davao Region that also passed government assesssment are found in Maco and the Copiat Island of Mabini all in Compostela Valley Province. (Photo by WOW Philippines)

Project Brief

Le Jardin de Villa-Abrille or The Garden of Villa-Abrille is the second high-end residential subdivision project of Filinvest in Davao, following the success of Fuente de Villa-Abrille project located along Tulip Drive. The two projects are under joint venture with one of the prominent families in the city, Carlos Villa-Abrille & Sons, Inc. The project is the first to be architecturally themed as French Mediterranean inspired residential subdivision in Mindanao.

The proposed residential subdivision project is conveniently located within the heart of Davao City. Thus, boast of its proximity to commercial establishments (only 100 meters away from NCCC Mall & approximately 500 meters away from SM City Davao), banks, financial institutions, schools (Ateneo de Davao University), churches and hospitals (Davao Doctors Medical Center).

The subdivision will be provided with 1st class amenities and state of the art facilities to complete the package of an exclusive and well master-planned residential subdivision. The project shall have a grand entrance gate and guardhouse with 24-hour roving security, a clubhouse wherein lot owners can hold their seminar, parties, wedding, and the like, a swimming pool where the family can enjoy bathing under the heat of the sun, and a play area where the kids can safely run around and play.

More to this, the 350-meter wide frontage of the subdivision along the National Highway called, Ma-a Road, is also conceptualized to become a commercial block. This will give even more convenience to the residents of the subdivision on their daily household requirements.

Council endorses Robinsons application with Peza

THE soon-to-be-opened Robinsons Cybergate Davao was endorsed by the Davao City Council for its registration application with the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (Peza).

The City Council endorsement is the pre-qualification clearance for the declaration of Robinsons Cybergate Davao as an IT Building by Peza.

Get updates and join Dabawenyos Kadayawan 2008 celebration

Among the Peza incentives are income tax holiday and the value-added tax exemption for the IT companies.

The Robinsons Cybergate will rise from where the Lanang Golf Club used to be.

The second floor of the Robinsons two-storey building situated in the 10,660 meter lot along J.P. Laurel in Bajada will house business processing outsourcing hubs such as call centers, medical transcription firm and other IT enterprises.

Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon, proponent of the resolution for endorsement, said this venture is expected to employ more than a thousand and will also project Davao City as ideal location for IT investment.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte's Executive Order 15 issued last year directed local government agencies and private sector to partner in making Davao City the IT hub of Mindanao.

Marañon said this is one step closer to that goal, which also includes developing the best IT workers.

The proposal was unanimously passed. (GLP)

Mindanao Investment Forum slated in Davao City in November
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (17 September) -- The Mindanao Investment Forum which is spearheaded by the Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) in cooperation with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI XI) will be held in Davao City this coming November

MinBC executive director Ednar Dayanghirang said that prior to the holding of the forum MinBC will touchbase with all stakeholders in the region so that the investment opportunities that will be presented to prospective investors will be representative of the island.

He said this time they would like to give the other areas the chance to make their investment sites be known.

The investment areas that will be given focus are food, alternative fuel, tourism, human resource and on environment.

With regards to human resource, he said the academe is proposing that universities and schools here to vie for the Center for Excellence of international standards.

The Technical Education and Skills Development Authority in the region is planning to apply as export zone for human resource.

Meanwhile, Dayanghirang said that they will be pushing for the Social Responsible Investment saying that projects in the locality would also look at the sustainability of the community as well as friendly to the environment.

He said that local government units would not approve investments in the area if the projects would not conform with the principles and policies of the local government units,

He said investments must also conform to underlying principles on responsible investment and those defined by the UN Declaration.

"Our monitoring must also be strengthened among non-government-organizations, civil society," he said.

He said they will also mobilize business sectors in conflict affected areas. (PIA) [top]

im sorry man i ddnt realize it was a big deal for you about that phrase and tagal ko kasing hindi nagl urk in other threads eh... of course people suffering form dementia are in that facility...hehehe no need to argue about that. I was actually referring a "demented facility" to a facility for the demented people to make it clear just for your meticulous mind. It is for people suffering for those. Well, Hindi ka naman siguro Brit to be so keen on choice of words or phrases, di ba? :) Kung hindi, then there is no need to ask coz I know you are a "i know all" type so no need for explanations from anybody, right? :)

sorry accepted!
its not a big deal for me, its a big deal for you,you cant accept a lil correction from someone...eto na lang---you should know how to accept corrections even me has been corrected many times, pero if pauunahin mo ang init ng yung ulo and your pride, hmmm, we cant do anything about it. i dont need explaination at all, im asking explaination about "demented facility" for those people who got meticulous mind like me(as what you have said),not all people here think the way you think so make it clear...you easily said that im a 'i know all" person, buti kapa kilala moko, have we met before? sana makilala kita so that i can make conclusions about you too,...who are you ba?

and ohhh...im not a brit, im actually a trying hard brit! my paumanhin if you were corrected by a trying hard brit!

....
To a certain extent, Davao’s economy received a boost from the problems of nearby regions. It has always been that way for decades, this city absorbing resources from nonresident businessmen when conflict erupts in their areas. The city itself was a victim of this phenomenon during the "Nicaragdao" days in the ’80s. With confidence in Davao’s prospects down back then, a number of local businessmen moved their money to safer destinations such as Metro Cebu and Metro Manila.

These days, the biggest buyers of medium to upscale properties in this city are rich families from neighboring provinces and regions. Many buyers acquire their properties in cash, some belonging to prominent Moro families from Central Mindanao.

It also helps that the peso has weakened in recent months since this has resulted in bigger proceeds for this city’s exporters. Davao’s monthly banana export bill is worth roughly $30 million, where a P5 loss in exchange rate to a dollar would mean P150-million windfall in 30 days. That figure is on top of a company’s projected net earnings for the period.

For at least six months this year, many small banana plantation owners also had their share in extraordinary income. A price war initiated by a Middle East buyer broke out among traders here pushing quotes of a standard 13.5-kilogram box of banana to approach $5 from the normal $2.50 at farm-gate. For a hectare that produces 4,000 boxes of export-quality bananas annually, that could be as high as $10,000 in additional revenues.

. . .

This city’s economy has not slowed down in recent months despite spikes in oil prices and adjustments in the cost of basic commodities as well as services. Complaints of lower sales could still be heard but "we’re okay, we’re adjusting," has been the usual reply of traders when asked how they’re doing.

The indicators of an economic slowdown are simply not present here. Medium-rise buildings, from five to 12 floors, are going up all over the central business district and feedback from property developers is good. Bank offices are increasing in number indicating deposit size — Davao City has the third largest in the country next only to Metro Manila and Metro Cebu — is getting bigger.

Vehicular traffic remains heavy and entrepreneurs have adjusted to whatever impact the rising prices of commodities have created on consumption. Small boutique shops outside the shopping malls still carry well-known foreign brands, but nowadays those on display are excellent-condition used items priced at a small fraction of those on display in the malls.

A street full of ukay-ukay (sedon-hand) stalls at this city’s Chinatown district has been a consistent crowd-drawer attracting even visitors from Manila and from nearby provinces. Importers of used items from Japan and Korea have diversified their product lines, from vintage consumer electronics, to clothes and small personal and home accessories that are mostly brand new and sealed, but sold at one-tenth of their original prices.

You don’t find promotional hotel rates here these days unlike in the late ’90s to the early part of this decade when the city’s economy suffered from the Asian financial crisis and the Estrada administration’s all-out war against the Moro rebels.

True, the city’s shopping malls are mostly in discounted sales mode since the Kadayawan last month, but this is more like an annual cleaning activity to get rid of excess inventory, specifically old stocks, before the big Christmas shopping splurge starts.

3rd largest economy in the country? thats alright...based on the underlined words, Davao city's economy was not compared to Manila City and Cebu City???it was compared sa whole metropolitan areas ng dalawa???

‘Business buoyant amid hostilities’

Business is still buoyant in Region 11 despite the ongoing hostilities in Central Mindanao, Gerardo Reynaldo, an official of the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MED-Co) said.

Reynaldo at a press conference said there is no substantial slowing down in the coming in of investors in the region.

“In general, there are still a number of investors in Mindanao,” Reynaldo said.

In the same press conference, Davao Chamber of Commerce and Industry Incorporated (DCCII) president Simeon Marfori joined Reynaldo saying that economic activities are not affected in Davao City by the ongoing skirmishes in some parts of Mindanao.

“We are very fortunate here because Davao is relatively peaceful,” Marfori said.

Marfori said “Support Mindanao’s Pursuit of Peace” which was recently launched in partnership with the government, will cushion the impact of war particularly on investments.

He said the project aims to unite and mobilize the private sector and government to raise the necessary relief goods for the conflict-affected areas.

“DCCII believes that peace initiative requires multisectoral participation. We are calling all Davaoeños to bring together their donations to DCCII,” Marfori said. Maya M. Padillo

Work has begun on the ambitious Playa Azalea project on Samal Island. A partnership between Anflocor and Landco plans to build a 522 lot residential seaside community that includes a hilltop clubhouse with infinity pool, greenbelt park, river pool, private 400 meter stretch of white sand beach, and a hotel complex.

Ricardo R. Floirendo, Anflo Group of Companies senior vice-president, said Landco -Pacific would include an important addition to the project, the special development of infrastructure amenities for the community.

_________________________________________________________________
"It will have a reverse osmosis equipment that can turn the sea water into drinking water and a power generation source via the Pearl Farm Marina that can provide electrical power to all the households of the village when needed," he added.

As I've mentioned previously, this development is in Limao, and very close to my land. It will be very interesting to check out the progress of this development the next time we visit. It should be pretty far along, and quite evident if it will be a problem, or a benefit.

The Project Hijo Port Town is a 765-hectare master-planned township anchored on a well-integrated modern port and an agro-industrial estate with residential, commercial and leisure components.

With a total port area of over 20 hectares, two operating berths and a controlling depth of 13 meters, Hijo Port is one of the largest and deepest among the seaports operating in Davao today. As a centerpiece of the whole township, the port will be upgraded and fully developed into a multi-modal facility with a capacity to handle containerized cargoes and passenger traffic.

The port is located within the 310-hectare agro-industrial estate which will cater to agro-based, labor-intensive companies wanting to tap agricultural and mineral resources like bananas, coconuts, fruits, natural rubber and raw gold and silver, all of which are abundant in the region. It will be composed of a Special Economic Zone (SEZ) to host manufacturing and service-oriented companies looking to serve the Brunei, Malaysia, Philippines – East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and other proximate markets like Japan, Korea, Taiwan and Australia; and a General Industrial Zone (GIZ) for complimentary industries to Special Economic Zone locations and those looking to serve Mindanao and the local
markets.

Around 275 hectares has been allocated in the project area for residential development, from socialized housing to middle and upper income housing. Close to 127,000 square meters of commercial and retail space will also be developed to serve the fast-growing market of Tagum City and its adjacent provinces. Leisure developments will include a golf course and country club, vacation lots, a wellness center, and eco-tourism projects highlighting the township’s beach, mangrove areas and natural forest.

The project will also include modern facilities directly servicing the whole estate such as public land transport center, air and sea transport terminals, security and fire protection facilities, an administrative building, medical center, schools and government office.
