davaoeagle July 1st, 2006, 07:21 PM Makati mayor to help Davao put up city college
MAKATI City Mayor Jejomar Binay and school officials of the Makati University have expressed their intention in helping the City Government in its plan to put-up a Davao City College.
Councilor Pilar C. Braga said Binay sent a letter addressed to the whole officialdom of the city telling them of his support to the city's plan to establish a city college.
Braga said another letter came, but this time from University of Makati executive president Editha Chang.
"We are grateful to learn that you are interested to know more about the university in preparation perhaps of the establishment of your own school. We were instructed by our President Tomas Lopez to coordinate with you for whatever assistance our university could offer," Chang said.
"In behalf the University of Makati and the City Government of Makati, we manifest our willingness to extend our support for the realization of your noble project," Chang's letter further stated.
Councilor Diosdado A. Mahipus said with the intention of the school officials and the City Government of Makati to help, it is already high time to start the long-delayed project. (BRQ)

davaoeagle July 1st, 2006, 07:32 PM Kabasares: When there's a coup, escape to Davao
By Cris D. Kabasares
Virtual link
SAN FRANCISCO, California -- There's an enormous risk in traveling in a country where a coup is taking place--no matter how dimwitted it was conceived.
My wife and I were booked to fly to Manila on February 25, this year but reports of the plot to oust President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo sidetracked the trip. So, we re-booked our flight.
It was the second time in nearly two months that we delayed our visit.
At the beginning, we planned to fly to Manila on January 10, 2006 but moved our departure date to February 25 -- when my wife had to undergo surgery.
We were all set for the journey on February 25, but the thought of running smack into a host of problems in the wake of a foiled coup was unappealing. So we decided on traveling to Mindanao at a later time.
Our decision was hardly precipitate. We had a bad experience with a "coup."
On April 28, 2001 -- while checking through immigrations and customs at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), we were told that there was a massive rally at Edsa to oust Arroyo.
We knew something was amiss!
There was confusion all around the usually organized NAIA. A few immigration officers were showing signs of rudeness others were impatient with arriving passengers. Porters were brashly insistent on bigger tips, and you couldn't believe how guileless customs men were with their intent.
While the system wasn't breaking up yet, it was distressing to watch how rapidly authority deteriorated at the slightest sign of trouble.
"Former President Estrada's people were massing at the Edsa Shrine. It's swelling by the hour, they're (the pro-Erap people) bringing in anti-Arroyo protesters by buses and passengers ships from as far as Mindanao," our friend who met us at the airport said.
In the afternoon we took a taxicab to Makati to meet with a relative, traffic all around Metro Manila was incredibly snarled. Our driver drove through back alleys to avoid running into heavy traffic.
Many cars were ensnared in some back roads when they ran up against a wall of stranded vehicles that had tried to escape from the bottleneck in the main streets. Getting out of the snarl was as bad as being there. There, every motorist struggled, some noisily, to leap out of the mass of idled cars. There, expletives burst all over the place. Driving around Metro Manila at that time was a nightmare!
The following day we flew to Davao City.
In troubled times, Manila follows a natural drift. Wastes begin to pile up in the middle of the streets, the populace becomes restless and motorists are at their worse behavior.
A few tourists I met at the Century Park Hotel had cut short their stay in Manila and had booked to leave for other Asian destinations. With a knowing wink, they said they'd visit Manila at a later and happier time.
It is said that the first hour of an armed clash stirred up by a coup is anarchy.
In Davao City, I quickly linked with friends like Sun.Star Davao publisher Tony Ajero, Nonoy Garcia, Ben Baldoza and others to "watch and chat about what was happening" in Manila. For the first time since our arrival, I felt safe.
Dabawenyo huddled in hotel lobbies and coffee shops to keep track of developments in the country's capital. For a few days, Dabawenyos were unduly distracted by an event larger than their pressing concern at the time, the May 14, 2001 elections.
Give it to the Dabawenyos. They stayed calm in impeccable style to boot.
On May 1, Dabawenyos watched on TV the so-called siege on Malacañang. There, it was -- the angry rallyists, there were thousands and thousands of them, surging to Mendiola and running head-on against riot police, marines and army troopers dangerously close to the gates of Malacañang. Many hurled stones and objects at the government troopers who hit back by firing in the air to disperse them. An angry bunch of young protesters torched a car.
One thing seems to characterize the history of the plots to seize the government in the country during the last 20 years, a Manila journalist told this writer. "Many people seem to know about them. A coup, usually a failed one, could happen so fast and end quickly as well before we catch up with it that chances are we're two coups behind in the tally," he added.
Associated Press reporter Jim Garcia writes, "reports of a coup plot have been circulating for more than a week, (before February 23, 2006) even elementary students were discussing it in detail."
Manila Times reported on February 23, 2006, "rumors of coup to be launched by rogue soldiers spread through text messages".
A journalist friend jokingly told me on the phone from Manila that the coup's code-name Oplan Andres was incredibly confusing and uninspiring, too. Breakaway soldiers kept asking each other who's Andres?
In 1989, we were at the Northwest Airlines passengers' lounge at the NAIA while waiting for our flight to San Francisco when we were told that there were military units that occupied hotels in Makati in what was reported to be another attempt to topple President Cory Aquino. There was a contingent of army rangers deployed in the vicinity of NAIA, but they kept their presence at a respectable distance from the airport.
Since then we habitually follow events in the Philippines and Davao City as well. We've learned that there was an added advantage to knowing what's new and interesting in the place hoping to foresee what other developments are in store, and consequently avert being suddenly blind-sided by events in the middle of a three-month's stay.

Butch predicts a Pacman KO in 5th
PHILIPPINE Sports Commission (PSC) chair William "Butch" Ramirez predicts a knockout win by Manny Pacquaio over Oscar Larios within five rounds in their Mano A Mano clash at the Araneta Coliseum today.
Ramirez, in a recent visit here, said: "Pacquaio has what it takes to win the fight but we can't underestimate his opponent who is a former world champion."
He said it would be an exciting bout to watch, encouraging Filipinos to be one in hoping and praying for the success of the country's boxing icon.
"We, all, can get inspiration from Manny. His passion and determination to excel are worth to be emulated by all of us, athletes and non-athletes alike," he said.
Pacquiao's American coach Freddie Roach earlier predicted a sixth round knockout by his ward. Davao City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte also shared the same view.
Duterte said, "I go by Roach's prediction. Pacquaio will come out the winner."
Meanwhile, ABS-CBN Davao will put up giant screens featuring the network's coverage on the bout in four malls -- Gaisano South Citimall, NCCC Mall, Gaisano Mall of Davao and Victoria Plaza Mall starting at 10 a.m.
SM City Davao cinemas will show a live feed of Mano A Mano via pay per view. (MLSA)

davaoeagle July 1st, 2006, 07:40 PM Hey guys, i find this hilarious
Pinoy humor and broken skulls
By Stella A. Estremera
Goin' Places
IT'S the Filipino's forte -- playing with words with that quirky Pinoy humor. And so you see the likes of a barber shot named Harry Cutter, a Kini Roger's chicken lechon stall, a Big Mak burger stand, and places like Kambing Klein, and Pork on Fork...
Kambing Klein, however, didn't pan out well. For the long trip it took, it was one big disappointment. Not because of the food, but because the food wasn't there.
Early last week, I have just ordered my fave quick lunch from I Love Sushi at SM City when tambay buddy Mabel calls asking me out for lunch at this place she has seen while on a trip to Panabo. "Kambing Klein," is the place, she said.
Since there is very little chance I'd ever visit the place on my own, I quickly accepted the invitation and had my Jap fastfood order packed to go. Kambing Klein is in Ilang, far, far away from this writer who lives down south and works off-center north. It was past 1 p.m., the place was quiet with no sign of kambing cooking. Mabel's driver was sent off to check and he returned saying the "kambing delivery" didn't arrive that day and so Kambing Klein doesn't have anything made from kambing meat except I think it was sinampalukan (most likely made of the head of yesterday's kambing delivery)...
Conclusion: No kambing lunch. We ended at Marina Tuna. But that's another kwento.
Later last week, it's Dengdeng's turn to suggest.
"Pork on Fork" at "Anda corner San Pedro Street." That's according to Dengdeng, anyway.
Dropping off at Grand Men Seng, I walked the short distance to the corner only to find a shoe shop (that has been there like forever under different names but for a long time has been known as Jackson's), a drug store, the Indian Palace (which was already closed for the night), and not one that looked new or looked like a food shop.
I walked to Legazpi, since Legazpi sounds more like a place where there will be food, and found Dengdeng's landmark -- another new place (dwarfed by its huge billboard) -- Chicken Stop. It was then when I received three consecutive text messages from Dengdeng; she jas just realized it wasn't at Anda.
Pork on Fork is a turo-turo. Those small, white walled turo-turo with kalderos all in a row.
"20 percent discount on all viands except barbecue after 7 p.m.", a notice taped on the wall said. That must be why all the prices on the viand labels were scratched out and new prices written hastily with ballpen -- all P5 less than the scratched out prices -- the P35 became P30, the P25 became 20, the P30 became P25, I would have loved to argue with the percentage computation, but what's the point.
They have pork barbecue in two sizes -- P5 and P10. The P10 barbecue, according to the serbidoras, is large. The P5 small. We peered and peered into the glass food display trying to get a good look at the barbecue inside and couldn't quite distinguish one from the other except that the "large" has a bigger barbecue stick. I told Dengdeng to get four "small", she will not be eating the sticks anyway.
She also ordered "lechon with potatoes" -- apparently scared off like I was by the sight of the "lechon paksiw" beside it which had a chopped up lechon head complete with teeth (lechon head sounds a bit palatable, but what really came to mind when I saw the paksiw as I lifted the kaldero lid was a broken skull -- now that can never sound palatable, I dropped the lid and didn't look again). I got a Bicol Express and a bola-bola. Make that "bola" since it was just one ground pork ball (for P10). It was a lonely-looking bola too since it was just popped on a platito and served with no sauce, no ketchap, no trimmings, just one lonely bola rolling around my platito.
The Bicol Express was maanghang all right, but not Bicol anghang, just spicy enough for the regular palate. And it's a hybrid. It has achuete and thus looked a cross between a humba and an adobo with gata, not like any Bicol Express I've seen so far. But it tasted good, very karinderia.
Ikit joined us just as we finished eating, ordering just four more small barbecues and sharing our leftovers -- yes, while we spent less than a hundred on our first order of viands, Dengdeng and I still couldn't eat them all. Our turo-turo sized tummies were perfectly contented.
Don't expect ambience or class in this place. This is a turo-turo, period. It's there to feed the stomach and not some gustatory cravings and social-climbing tendencies.
Dinner over, it was time for coffee. We left and noticed the "wonderful" sight right outside the turo-turo entrance -- ladies all dressed up for the night, waiting... for customers. The next-door neighbor is a videoke bar of the Legazpi-San Pedro kind... (if you get my drift...)

Agree!
by the way, let's not forget the other inato malls or strip malls ha. Let me do a run down
1. ATU Plaza at Duterte St. ( Very cozy feeling) Loved the branded shoes in one of the stores there. I was there too he he. Can't recall the name though. A doctor sister (dermatologist) of Robin and Rustom Padilla has her derma clinic here. She had Rustom and Carmina cut the ceremonial ribbon in the opening.
2. Plaza De Luiza Very elegant stripp mall. Home to deifferent restos and offices e.g. Japanese Consular Office. Connected to a business hotel at the other end of it.
3. Regina Complex. One of Davao's first strip malls. Lots of shops too. Chiao Photography is there since time immemorial. Service shops are aplenty.
4. MTS. Who does not know MTS?
5. There's One in Bolton (Opposite UM CAS Campus). Lots of restos there and very nice design.
6. Rizal Promenade. Home to different restos serving foreign food and specialties.
7. Damosa Gateway- chic and cozy. Lots of restos din daw (haven't seen it yet)
8. Cartir Strip Mall in Buhangin- i think i know this place.
9. Davao Metro Shop- Sits in front of Bankerohan Public Market. Connected by a pedestrian briidge. One of the firsts in Davao. Home to lots of "butingting" shops.
10. Lachmi- this Indian -owned strip mall has survived the test of time.
11. Diaz Mall- (suggestion of TJ) Has a sub-level effect because of the design. Lots of butingtings here too
This is as far as I can remember it. Please make your add ons guys.

Add to that the equally famous Colasa's Barbeque and Tuna TO GO now loved and fully embraced by Manila patrons. Pioneers of this sort of venture are the Salises in Davao who had Dabaw Inihaw serving gastronomic cravings of Manilans for a very long time. They have closed down the resto and diverted to Apungkula which has many locations in Davao.
Plans are afoot for TUNA TO GO to go (pun not intended) International. I lost my contact with the owner's daughter though. Sayang.

Naga City discovers Google Earth
By Erwin Oliva
INQ7.net
Last updated 09:48pm (Mla time) 06/30/2006
Government officials in Naga City have made public its geographic information system (GIS) to allow Google Earth enthusiasts to play around with the information, INQ7.net learned.
Google Earth is free software application that allows people to zoom in on satellite photos of the world. People can literally view any country in the world using this nifty computer program.
The Philippine Makeover blog (http://www.mmmakeover.blogspot.com/) said the Naga City government has challenged people to create Google Earth maps out of the GIS information.
Filipino journalist Roby Alampay and a United States-based Filipino urban planning professional Benjie dela Peña run the blog.
In its latest post, the Philippine Makeover blog noted Naga City has also released a three-dimensional map of the city, which could be viewed on Google Earth.
The local government's GIS information can now be downloaded at http://gis.naga.gov.ph/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Data.
Alampay and Dela Peña said many Filipinos are now discovering Google Earth.
For Philippine history buffs, Google Earth now offers a useful "map" or "KMZs" of sites of the World War II battles fought in the country.
One Google Earth map identifies the exact locations of known volcanoes throughout the archipelago. Two maps also provide complete information on the potential and existing mining sites in the country.
There is now also a Google Earth map at all Philippine airports.
Alampay and Dela Peña said they have started to compile links to all these maps in "Google Earth Philippines" (www.googleearthphilippines.pbwiki.com).
Both are now inviting people to add to its growing list of Google Earth maps.
Naga City was the recent addition to Google Earth Philippines' growing list.
The local government has allowed them access to GIS information that has been used to visualize city data.
"We've just been running crazy with Google Earth now that Metro Manila is being rendered in high-resolution. We've been swapping KMZs (Google Earth markers) until finally we put up the [Google Earth Philippines]. Both are designed to set up a one-stop shop for Google Earth stuff (KMZs, Sketchup models, maps, etc.) for the Philippines," Alampay said in an e-mail.
Google Earth Philippines also includes maps to Metro Manila landmarks, hydroelectric and geothermal plants, world heritage sites in the country, mass transit, intact forests (plotted by Greenpeace), and locations and products of local agrarian reform beneficiaries.
A virtual helicopter tour of the Philippines, courtesy of "Our Awesome Planet" blog of Filipino Anton Diaz, was also added.
The applications of Google Earth Philippines are endless, Alampay continued, as he suggested several ideas on how Google Earth can be used to point out the shrinking "green zones" in cities to local government officials.
Dela Peña and Alampay hope to encourage people to use Google Earth Philippines "to get people talking about urban planning issues."
Both Alampay and dela Peña have created a blog, dubbed "Great Manila Makeover" (http://mmmakeover.blogspot.com/), which they have renamed Philippine Makeover, to encourage Filipinos to see Philippines in a different light.
"I'm an urban planner and I've been trying to get urban planning issues on the table in Metro Manila --and get people to talk about our built fabric. I was frustrated by the lack of information available online. Then Google Earth updated so the high-resolution telemetry was a big bonus. Roby came up with the idea for the Great Manila Makeover to get people to re-imagine the city,' which is my passion," said dela Peña in an online chat.
Ironically, both founders are now living outside the Philippines. Yet they share the vision and dream of rebuilding the country, starting with Metro Manila.
"It's so easy with Google Earth to see that we're one country. It's so easy to link to each other. It's easy to bridge investors with farmers. To point out potential green zones to local officials. At least it's easy to picture it while looking at the country 'from a distance.' Corny but true. If we can picture it, we should be able to do it," added Alampay.
Dela Peña noted that cities are the largest artifacts of civilization.
"We need to understand our cities if we want to understand our culture. To put it another way, the social, political, economic and cultural issues we face all have spatial manifestations -and are shaped by the fabric of our built environment. Like the rest of the world, we are rapidly urbanizing -- up to 60 percent according to the last census estimate. When we begin the work of improving our cities, we begin the real work of improving the (day to day) quality of life of our citizens," he stressed.

Tagum City Energy Park
TAGUM CITY -- It's neither a place where alternative energy fuel is being developed nor a place to do physical work out. But it is a place where offices of National Government agencies are being housed.
Tagum City Mayor Rey T. Uy called the place "Energy Park," which will be set up in a 30-hectare City Government property located in Apokon.
It is designed to provide the people a one-stop shop of transaction with National Government offices and is to be fully developed by 2010.
But Uy wants the place to be more than just a jungle of edifice but a nature's park spruced up with trees and various species of palm.
"This would become a place where people will go hiking and camping," Uy said adding that a demo farm for high value vegetables will also be one of the features of the Park.
Right now, Uy is preparing about 16,000 seedlings of palm trees intended for the park.
Meanwhile, Uy is giving a parcel of land within the park for free to national government agencies that intend to put up satellite offices in Tagum City.
Lately, the city government awarded 3,000 square meters of land to the Home Development Mutual Fund (Pag-ibig), which intended to put up an office to cover the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley.
Uy said agencies which wanted to put up offices at the Energy Park were the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda), Social Security System (SSS), Philhealth, Department of Education (DepEd), and Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (Bfar).
Go Tagum City!!!! Go forward Metro Davao!

coool.....i ve read an article about BPOs in Pinas...and Nakayama Davao has been featured....here lemme post an excerpt:
"Metro cities outside the capital of Manila are also cashing in on the BPO boom. Among these metro cities, Metro Cebu in Visayas, is the next preferred site for IT investments, including back office services. In fact, Cebu City is positioning itself as an alternative ICT hub in southern Philippines. Cebu currently hosts 12 call centers.
Not to be outdone, the province of Davao has also opened its doors to BPO investors. Merly Cruz, the trade department's director for Region XI, said two BPO companies engaged in the outsourcing of architecture and graphical services have already set up operations.
Nakayama Technological Corp., one of the biggest BPOs in Mindanao, operates in Digos, Davao del Sur while Menogaya Co. runs it's daily services in Davao city. "The information communications technology has been added to the priority industry in Davao," Cruz said. The incentives offered to investors are a sales tax holiday for four years and free processing of local government taxes and fees such as building and mayor's permits.
To prove that companies in Luzon have taken serious note of the skills of the residents in Mindanao, G-Com Asia Pacific Phil., which is a branch of the Cyber City in Clark, had established call center operations in Davao. "It will also start its legal research outsourcing within the year," Cruz said."

tj_brewed July 2nd, 2006, 05:33 AM Madayaw na pagabot sa Davao! Welcome to Davao - the City in Bloom!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/dvoairport10111.jpg
There are beautifully vivid reasons why Davao is called a “City in Bloom”. Aside from the presence of vast plantations and garden resorts that grow rare and exotic orchids and ornamentals, the City is specifically known among florists all over the world for its famous waling-waling, considered as one of the most beautiful orchids.
The Waling-waling or vanda sanderana grows in natural abundance in its territory, at the foot of Mt. Apo. Orchids just love to grow majestically in the City because of its typhoon-free weather. Add to that the fact that the city has more than 1,000 square kilometers of lush tropical forest (or about 47% of its total land area) that provided an environment conducive for rare plants to thrive and flourish. Another factor is the rich fertile soil of the city that can virtually make every wind-blown seed grow and bear fruit even without the benefit of human intervention. Virtually, all ingredients are present for Davao City to blossom and bloom magically like the waling-waling.
All these factors contributed to the eventual declaration of Davao City as the official “Orchid Capital of the Philippines” as declared by then President Corazon Aquino.
Experience the wonders of Davao that begin with a warm and gracious welcome the moment you arrive in the City in Bloom. It continues with a splendor found from the highlands of Mt. Apo to the islands of Samal, packed with awesome natural wonders and stunning geography all in one destination.
Cradled in a setting amidst the natural wonders of the islands and the highlands, Davao's diverse sights and sounds are highly credited to the vibrant mosaic of rich immigrant and indigenous cultures dominantly evident in its arts, festivities, literature and culinary works showcasing the rustic, urban and urbane charm this side of the archipelago.
Cosmopolitan life has never been this better in this premier city of the south. With world-class facilities and services which the city offers, Davao is now the favored convention destination in the country for its proximity to leisure destinations and ready availability of recreational facilities that can facilitate in mixing business with pleasure.
Leisure activities runs from both sides of the spectrum: from snorkeling in the coral gardens of the islands to conquering the majestic Mt. Apo, breakfast by the gulf at sunrise to bar-hopping and disco-dancing 'til dawn, to sipping local coffee in a downtown pub to a feast of grilled delights. These are but a strand in the city's kaleidoscopic weave in its boundless choices of lifestyles and activities. Tranquility amid urban bustles, the metropolitan's flurry balanced with nature's serenity.
With an aggressive private sector assisting the government in the development of the city, Davao was able to nab prestigious awards and recognition for their efforts, such as being constantly acclaimed as one of Asia's most livable cities by the Asiaweek Magazine; bagging the best city police office in the country, a testimony of the city's effort in ensuring peace and order; consistently on the top of the list of the annual search for the cleanest and greenest city in the Philippines; and the prestigious Destination of the Year honor given by the Kalakbay Awards (National Tourism Awards). Davao is also proud to have the second best source of potable water in the world according to the World Health Organization, assuring guests of good health while staying in the city.
Davao City, the undisputed center of trade, convention and tourism in Mindanao, is indeed booming and blooming as it continues its aim in becoming the prime destination for tourism and investments in the Philippines, the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Philippines-Malaysia East ASEAN Growth Area) and the Asia-Pacific region.
With its unique and inviting cultures, Davao is not only about the beautiful sights and exciting natural wonders, its about the people you'll meet and the friends you'll make. So, what are you waiting for?
Prepare yourself for an unforgettable stay in the country's southern gateway to Asia and the rest of the world: Davao City, the City in Bloom!

http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/duriandavao.jpg
The freshest tropical fruits are always ripe for the picking in a City called Fruit Basket of the Philippines. Whether you’ll go for the juiciest watermelon, the sweetest mango, the more succulent pomelo, rambutan, or go subtly fruit ferocious with banana, mangosteen, lanzones, strawberry, pineapple, avocado, langka, buko, or simply settle with a bowl of fresh fruit salad to end the long list, whatever fibrous or juicy fruits you have in mind, you’ll definitely have your fill in Davao City.
Orchards and fruit plantations continually make the city livable if only for its produce of the freshest fruits giving visitors a glimpse of what it would be like in the Garden of Eden with the exotic Durian (the King of the Fruits or the Fruit of the Gods) serving as the fruit of good and evil with its strong aroma (or pungent odor) overpowered by its heavenly taste which you would not want to exchange for anything. Come to the City of Durianburg and partake of the glorious delights of fruits made in the heavenly realms.
tj_brewed July 2nd, 2006, 06:09 AM Home of the Great Bird of Asia –Soaring high in the new millennium
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/davaoeagle121334556.jpg
No one in the early 80’s would have thought that Davao, like its symbol and icon- the Philippine eagle, would soar to new heights in the new millennium.
No one ever thought too that the mighty Philippine Eagle (pithecophaga jefferyi) considered as the largest eagle in the world and threaten for extinction as early as the 70’s, would have survived the onslaught of denudation and other factors that continually threaten its natural habitat – the forest.
Thanks mainly to joint efforts of concern government and non-government organizations, captive breeding of this great bird of Asia has resulted to the birth of more than a dozen eagles (hatched in captivity) and we have welcomed the new millennium with them still lording the skies over the forest and vegetation around Mt. Apo.
The Philippine Eagle is a faithful mate. It has been observed that this bird usually prefers a monogamous lifestyle. It usually builds its nest on towering tropical trees about 80 feet above the ground (sufficient enough for it to have a good view over its territory).
Philippine Eagles breed between August and January, do aerial courtships and mate in or near their nest. The female lays one egg every two years and both parents alternately incubate the egg for about 60 days until it hatches. The eaglet fledges within 150 days and becomes independent at 18 months at which time the parents drive it out of their 60 to 100 kilometer radius territories.
With its habitat dwindling due to illegal logging, the Philippine Eagle Foundation, Inc. was organized in 1987 to implement programs such as captive breeding management, field research, community-based enterprise development, and conservation education.

With more convention and exhibition centers being established that have complemented other excellent tourism facilities, Davao City has steadily positioned itself as the Convention Center of the Philippine South in the 21st century.
Since 1990, it has steadily become the preferred destination for conventions and conferences. This could be attributed to the ever changing and ever improving economic and tourism landscape of the city, which attracted organizers to conduct major conventions here instead of proverbial settings like Manila or Cebu.
Modern, sophisticated, and state-of-the-art facilities and equipment for conventions and conferences are now readily available. This is equally complemented by the establishment of new first class hotels and mountain resorts bringing the number of hotel rooms from around 500 in 1980 to over 2,500 in 1999. Yet, the demand for more hotel rooms is projected to increase now that the City has more tourism products, services, and facilities to offer.
Gateway to the East ASEAN
Davao City, the birthplace of the East ASEAN Growth Area (or EAGA), is also your gateway to this emerging polygon of power. The EAGA was formed mainly because the areas that comprised it (Mindanao and Palawan for the Philippines, Brunei, Manado and North Sulawesi of Indonesia, and Sabah for Malaysia) used to be a trading bloc during the 12th century up to the 15th century where people enjoyed borderless economies with barter trading as the most common economic practice. Centuries of colonialism, imperialism and the establishment of governments within the chain of islands halted the exchanges.
In 1994, government representatives and businessmen from these areas have gathered together in Davao City for the biggest convention ever held in the region to formally signal the birth of the newest trading bloc in Asia, the BIMP-EAGA. In the heart of this formation is Davao City, which paved the way for the re-establishment of cooperation between the Philippines, Brunei, Indonesia and Malaysia to advance the free movement of people, goods, services, and improve cultural and economic ties within the said sub-regional trade bloc.
Through these developments, direct air and sea linkages to the islands have been established making Davao City your gateway to the East ASEAN growth area.
davaoeagle July 2nd, 2006, 07:07 AM Living In Davao
There are many compelling reasons why people choose Davao over any other place in Southeast Asia. As varied as the reasons and factors may be, still they all summed up to one thing- quality of life.
The air is fresh. The city is clean and green. There is real abundance of the freshest harvests from the land and sea. To top it all, the quality of potable water is among the best in the world.
Starting life in Davao is easy, convenient, affordable, and fulfilling. Real-estate prices are easy on the pocket. There is a wide array of housing packages from low-cost to prime residential estates. Rentals are inexpensive. Electricity, water, and phone lines are readily available.
The City is being primed up to serve as the health and medical care center of the East ASEAN Growth Area (EAGA). The city is host to 39 schools (universities and technical colleges) offering a system of education that is at par with the best in the region.
From the most basic needs to life’s little pleasures, the City’s shopping scene has become more vibrant with the sprouting of big malls that provide enjoyable shopping experiences and offer more value for money.
Buses and jeeps provide a cheap land transportation alternative as well as a quick look to the life of the common people. Most residents prefer riding taxis or their own vehicles. The city is blessed to have the most courteous and honest taxi drivers in the country.
International Community
As Davao is being geared up to become a better retirement haven in this part of the region, more and more people from all over the globe have started finding their respective places in the city. With a bigger space to accommodate more people than other cities in the region, there certainly is a place within the city ready to welcome new members of the Davao community.
Before WWII broke out, Davao is already a melting pot of Asia with nationals from India, Indonesia, Malaysia, China, and Japan doing business at first with the locals but eventually decided to stay for good and consider it a home. There was even a period when the place was called the “Little Tokyo” of the Philippines because of the presence of hundreds of Japanese workers who have migrated to the City at the height of the massive production of abaca fiber.
Being a relatively peaceful place with a cosmopolitan setting that is relaxed, foreign nationals find it easy to assimilate in a place that is generally appreciative and respectful of cultural uniqueness.
Ethnic groups in Davao include Americans Koreans, Chinese, Japanese, Indians, Indonesians, Malaysians, Australians, Germans, Italians, and other nationals from Europe and the Asia-Pacific region.
Food and Dining
Davao dining offers a variety of culinary delights that will excite even the most discriminating gourmet.
The freshness of ingredients harvested from the sea and the farms provides a fulfilling taste that is distinctly Davao.
The city is known for its inihaw (grilled tuna) and kinilaw (local version of sashimi using tuna or blue marlin strips).
There is a variety of dining destinations to whet your appetite and suit your mood. There are restaurants offering a panoramic view of the Davao gulf. Others prefer a wider perspective of the city by dining in an array of restaurants located on top of hills.
Delectable Ala Carte and smorgasbord at affordable prices can also be found in popular restaurants, hotels, and cafes all over the metropolis. Chinese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, Korean and other cuisines are included in the menu of specialty restaurants.
Culture and Religions
Davao culture has assimilated influences from both hemispheres of the world. By and large, it is a mix of Asian, Spanish and American cultures. With predominantly migrant population, the City is a melting pot of cultures where diversities are well appreciated, respected, and nurtured in a harmonious and peaceful environment.
Davaoeños are a versatile and talented people with music and other arts that are well appreciated in the entire country. Folkdance rhythms and steps are unconventionally challenging and entertaining.
Basketball is considered as a national sport. A Basketball court can be found in almost all villages in the City. Chess is being played alongside a local board game called “Dama” in some parks devoted for the mind game enthusiasts.
Major languages and dialects are Filipino (mainly derived from Tagalog) Binisaya, English.
The city is predominantly Christian with more than 80 percent of the population practicing the Roman Catholic faith. Cathedrals, churches, and chapels of Catholics, Baptists, Methodists, Pentecostals, and other Christian groups dot the city’s landscape.
Some born-again groups that have gained national or worldwide prominence are founded in Davao City. Some international evangelists have stated that Davao is the spiritual capital of the country. Due to a growing number of secular Christian groups, it is interesting to note that some even conduct their worship services in places like cinemas and warehouses.
There are places of worship too for those practicing Islam, Buddhism and other faiths in Davao.
Bank and Other Financial Institutions
There are over 2,000 financial institutions operating in Davao City including over a hundred branches of Philippine and international banks.
Some banks operate 7 days a week. Those inside big establishments such as malls operate 6 days a week (Mondays through Saturdays).
Added banking convenience is provided through numerous automated teller machines in strategic places all over the metropolis as well as through other forms of electronic banking.
davaoeagle July 2nd, 2006, 07:26 AM ADVANTAGES OF DOING BUSINESS IN DAVAO
1. LINKAGES AND ACCESSIBILITY
Davao City is strategically located in Southeastern Philippines. It has air and sea linkages to major points of destination in the country and the rest of the world. Goods and people can also be transported by land via the Philippine-Japan Friendship highway.
The new Davao International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Philippines with daily flights to major destinations in the country. Davao City also serves as your gateway to the sub-regional trade bloc known as the East ASEAN growth area with direct flights to Singapore, Palau and Indonesia. Modern infrastructure and facilities present in the City provide businessmen access to the 20 million market of Mindanao and the 56 million market of the BIMP-EAGA.
2. PERFECT WEATHER
The City is situated in a typhoon-free zone. The all-year round predictability of its tropical weather (sunshine by day and occasional rain showers by night) makes the place conducive for business, leisure, agriculture and other worthwhile activities.
3. EFFICIENT PUBLIC UTILITIES
Davao City has excellent public utilities that offer the best products and services.
There is abundance in the supply of (piped) potable water. There is availability of Cost-efficient electricity through hydropower generation. 24-hours a day power is assured by the able distribution of Davao Light with the availability of a back-up generation plant. State-of-the-art telecommunications facilities connect its people to the rest of the world.
Players in the telecommunications industry (phone companies, Internet Service Providers, Cable-TV, computer vendors) have continually offered new products, services and innovations to keep the people abreast with the latest and even ahead.
4. REGIONAL CENTER OF PHILIPPINE SOUTH
The City is host to regional centers and headquarters of government and private agencies whose scope of operational jurisdiction covers Southern Philippines or the island of Mindanao. This is the reason why many organizations consider the City as the "de facto" capital of Mindanao.
It is considered as the financial center of the Mindanao Island with more than 1,200 institutions classified as banks, non-bank financing, and lending agencies.
The City is also the center for learning, education, and trainings in Mindanao with 46 tertiary education institutions classified as universities (including the University of the Philippines-Mindanao and The Ateneo de Davao University), colleges, and technical schools that regularly supply the City of needed expertise and manpower.
5. MOST PEACEFUL CITY IN SOUTHEAST ASIA
Davao is one of the most peaceful cities in Asia with a monthly crime rate of 0.8 cases per 10,000 persons per month. Its Davao Police Office is a consistent top pick for the Country’s Best Police Office Award. The City has also established the 911 central communications and emergency response center in 2002 to lessen crime incidences as well as preserve lives and properties.
6. COMPETITIVE COST OF DOING BUSINESS
In Davao City, quality products and services do not necessarily equate to high cost. Almost everything of quality in Davao City costs cheaper compared to other major cities.
Rates of public utilities, real estate, rentals for commercial spaces, accommodations, labor, raw materials, and other business related inputs are comparatively cheaper than other major cities in Asia. This factor is seen vital in achieving a healthy return on investments.
7. BEST PROFESSIONALS AND LABORERS
The City is home to the best professionals and laborers in Southern Philippines. Its human resources are touted as competent, highly literate, English-speaking and very cost-effective.
Davao is the biggest producer of engineers, computer programmers, medical practitioners, accountants, lawyers, and other skilled labor in the region.
8. FRUIT BASKET OF THE COUNTRY
Almost all kinds of fruits grow in abundance in the City. It is host to a lot of fruit plantations and it is famous for its exotic Durian.
The City is one of the biggest exporters of banana in Asia. Other fresh produce includes delectable delights such as the pomelo, mango, mangosteen, rambutan, strawberry, lanzones, and pineapple among others.
Aside from this edge, the City functions as the trade-off point of Mindanao’s high value crops.
9. INVESTOR-FRIENDLY CITY
Investors are well taken care of in Davao City. Being the pioneer city in establishing an investment promotion center that provides free professional assistance including processing of applications for local fiscal incentives, the local government sees to it that investors are provided the red carpet in starting business as easy as possible.
10. RESPONSIVE AND FORWARD-LOOKING LOCAL GOVERNMENT
The City Government of Davao is very positive on developmental projects. Infrastructure modernizations such as international standard airport, roads, bridges, and seaports are being done in response to the present challenges of the new millennium.
The City’s goals, thrusts, and programs are being guided by the fundamental principles of sustainable development. Under the Comprehensive Development Plan for 1996-2021, the City’s priorities are: peace and order; health; environment; education and social services; shelter; livelihood; infrastructure; agriculture and fishery development; investment and tourism; revenue enhancement; sports development; and good governance.

Konsehal July 2nd, 2006, 08:08 AM ei good news...atin atin lang to ha.....we had a breakfast chit chat with our president here sa PeopleSupport...and the next facility to be opened is PS Davao. Though we already have a recruitment office in Davao, a full blown operation (like in Cebu and Makati) will be expected anytime soon. The only problem that PS has regarding the upcoming Davao facility is the lack of office space / location. He pointed out that we do not have a PEZA accredited IT Zone or Park. Councilor Pete Lavina? Any updates regarding our IT Park? :)
Councilor Pete....a PeopleSupport Davao facility will be another jackpot for Davao. Before Convergys, Etelecare and the other 12 callcenters started their exodus from Manila to Cebu, PeopleSupport Cebu along with Sykes Asia was established first. So if the planned Davao facility will be pursued, the callcenter phenomenon in Cebu will be naturally replicated in Davao... kaya plsss.......seryosohin natin ang pagconstruct ng PEZA accredited IT Zone / Park.
Congrats to Thread 14!
There are positive developments tj but I am not at liberty to discuss it yet. Suffice it to say that one Davao group met PS top brass very recently. :)

There is something terribly wrong with Davao's promotion as ICT/BPO site. No promotion whatsoever. That is why we've been left behind.
We need to play catch up. We need all your support guys and gals. We cannot definitely rely on the LGU alone. We need more private sector push. The new groups working on it are - I believe - more serious than previous groups running the so-called Davao ICT Council. Also, there are private sector groups really interested in the business. To top it all, the nerds need to come together. Jayson - our lumad in Silicon Valley - is on his way home to help us.
The formula appears to be the real synergy of business + academe + the nerds.
Let's hope for the best. :)

i like the idea as well as the place has all the ingredients of a true silicon gulf. it may not be as ready when it comes to human resource but ADDU is just right within the vicinity-ready to flex its muscles when the need arises.

Indeed.
If we can't have one large ICT Park. We can have a number of dispersed Diamond Parks. One on the Ateneo-Old PLDT-Marco Polo-Aldevinco area, and probably another in UM-MTS-NCCC-PWC area; another in Lanang-Gateway-Jap School area; another in Chinatown-Obrero, etc.
There is new concept in BPO, outsourcing from within and someone will just act as integrator. This concept will not require a big place or huge investments. I believe Davao can pursue initially along this line. Small but terrible units. :) :) :) :) :)

great idea. we can absolutely disperse the potential of this industry. afterall davao city is not one of the largest cities for nothing. let me point out in particular the Plaza de Luiza part of the Chinatown. I think this particular enclave very well suits the pre requisites of a silicon gulf diamond. the place teems with business activities all around. it has a business hotel, row of specialised restaurants, bars, banks pockmarking both the Magsaysay and Villa Abrille Roads. Ateneo and Holy Cross are just a breath away.

Right!
There are plenty of possibilities and potential areas like those of the Venue-Cental Bank-soon-to-open PS or the Davao Doc-AMA-Brokenshire, etc.
What Davao really needs is to unify on our strategic direction and immediate priorities. If we can lure two or three more locators, the rest will follow as tj correctly pointed out. :)
xzibit31 July 2nd, 2006, 10:21 AM hi there everybody,
my family(my mom and her brothers and sisters) is setting up a call center. they decided on that about 4 months ago. i was trying to convice them to set up shop here in davao. but they could not find information on the places on where to set it up.kung baga no information was available...so they decided to set it up in ortigas because the one who will manage it (my cousin) and our partners are based in manila...so i think that it was locigal to set it up there .pero from the start, manila was the logical place for us to set it up...i think it is a 100 or 150 seater center...
sayang talaga....we already started construction and is about to be finished shortly.....

Not too late actually.
BPO business will continue to grow tremendously. The Call Center Association of the Phil predicts capacity to reach 300,000 seats by 2010. You might want to locate expansion in Davao later.
In MetroManila, these problems will manifest later - high rentals, high wages, traffic, pollution, power shortage, etc.
Places like Davao can offer better in terms of low rent, relatively lower wages, better environment. Also, redundant power with Davao Light standy power plant.
I would like to officially talk with your family on this. Please email me at peterlavina@gmail.com :)

you bet! my only concern though is if the city government is seriously pursuing/advocating this endeavour. as of this time, the public has no inkling if incentives, tax holidays and ordinances declaring identified silicon gulf diamonds as special/priority zones/locations, were in place thereby actual investors benefit from the aformentioned perks. whatever mistakes/miscue the city government might be guilty of and what might not in regard to this industry is immaterial unless we view them only as part of the learning process. what is very significant i believe is rectifying the hitches and move forward with the agenda as we have a lot of catching up to do.

Please don't get me wrong if I appear critical of the local government. I am a city councilor alright but primary tasks on this regard belong to the executive department. For instance, investment promotion is under City Hall not City Council. We have an investment code that already includes ICT among the priority investment areas that are qualified for incentives.
Given the current circumstances, I doubt very much if we can rely on the local government to undetake the promotion per se. That is why I am pushing all these ideas in the private sector and not in government. Sayang atong mga ideya kung ihatag sa govt ang tasking. Matulog lang ni sa mga filing cabinet.
That is the reason the lead groups should be business + academe + nerds. LGU will be there to provide the macro support like peace and order, infra, yes, incentives, etc. :)
Bye for now, salamat sa nindot nga mga exchanges! :)

i completely understand your position konsehal being in legislative side of governance. with 26 great minds in the city council i know it can get pretty chaotic out there.
however, it might not augur well if at this juncture we dismiss previous shortcomings of Davao LGU as a whole as a thing that solely stems from the executive dept. this might not be his forte and we know how tremendous his efforts are in other equally important aspects of governance.
the exec might just need a little of cajoling for him to look at it closely. the rest will now rest on the shoulders of the city council by laying the foundation which by the looks of it, seems like we just scratched the surface while other neighboring cities worship it like god. the private sector in Davao are just as foolhardy to throw in support and investors are edgy to pour in investments to start with, but i suspect they also want a sure ROI of every penny.
Ady001 July 2nd, 2006, 01:27 PM I think Davao has a plus for a number of reasons (building up a call center) and one of these is the availability of land. On the other side, Manila is ultra-savvy when it comes na siguro to the internet. methinks....
Ady001 July 2nd, 2006, 01:38 PM Anyway, I'm wondering if there will ever be another tunnel like that in Buhangin. It looked so fantabulous :grouphug:

hmmmmmmmmmm......let's always look @ the glass half full!!!! ehehehehe look at the bright side! most of the huge call centers have facilities outside of Metro Manila. When your family's contact center will grow big and need to set up a center elsewhere.......let's make it sure that they'll expand here in DAVAO!
and hopefully Davao will catch one of the three giants in the call center industry here in the Philippines - PS (not PS Bank gravy...ehehehehe) PEOPLESUPPORT (www.peoplesupport). PS along with SYKES ASIA started the exodus of the callcenters to CEBU. There were only 2 callcenters in Cebu on 2003 and after 3 years (starting with PS and SYKES) the callcenter industry grew from two to twelve or more - excluding the locally owned contact centers and other BPOs.
Grab PS! and the rest will follow for sure!

old Crocodile Park ang akong na-adtoan before...3 yrs ago...bago naman daw karon..anyway here's an excerpt from ABS-CBN News (http://www.abs-cbnnews.com/storypage.aspx?StoryId=40718)
The Crocodile Farm is much newer and it’s more family-friendly than the farm in Palawan. The gardens are manicured and it looks more like a colorful theme park with real live animal mascots. The monsters occupy fenced ponds and visitors are given the chance to pet the infant crocodiles.
Besides the crocs, pythons, ostriches and other exotic birds are just some of the attractions of the Crocodile Farm. The park is also the headquarters of Davao Wild Adventure, which organizes three-hour whitewater rafting expeditions at the Davao. Most of the crocs at the park hail from that river so the expedition promises to be thrilling.

KLCC is the mall sa baba sa petronas right? or are they a chain of malls pud like SM? grabe pud nang magtukod sila diri oi
Anyway, my cousin told me nga the lot infront of redemptorist/emcor bajad is now owned by the ayalas? how true?

dili man imposible! remember...Marco Polo was once first established here in Davao (few years back) before they decided to open their hotel here in Cebu..and to think Marco Polo is an international hotel as well.......so what made KLCC's plan to invest in Davao impossible?
Davao now plays a major role in the Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines - East Asian Growth Area. Now it is being developed as a shopping destination for neigbors such as Republic of Palau, Kota, Manado, etc. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!
Ady001 July 2nd, 2006, 05:15 PM well these wont come out without basis Ady! :)
Rumors will stay as rumors still. Just keep our fingers crossed. But SM making a hypermart there would be better than the Ayalas. Or Robinsons there. Tapos, they'd just renovate a bit of the old water district.

ngek, looks like you're asthmatic. anaphylactic attack is a sign yours is not controlled. anyways be careful next time and always puff your inhaler before you hit the gym he he.
know what? it could also be from the ingredients used in the food. In my case i dunno why if ate those chinese food i always have allergies. i'm allergic to sea foods, yes but not with noodles and pork and it's a mystery to me why i get weals and flares each time i ate them from a chinese resto.

and it's deadly my friend. you're lucky you reached the hospital quick. pretty sure the docs gave you a shot of steroids to remedy it quick. My friend's boss had a similar attack and of all places sa France pa when she attended a company conference-culprit? oyster (i love oyster too esp the baked ones) she never recovered though. that's how worse it can get.

i think so too it's VP as it has been bleeding since several years ago pa. The Limsos are not into malls that's why. Lucio Tan was rumored to come to the rescue of VP a long time ago but none of it materialized. hope it's now either Ayala or SM. 13 hectares is wide enough for an Ayala Center minus the business park.

she still got to go home, in respirator of course but it was nosedive from there.
he he, benadryl is the one used by scheming nannies to pacify an ultra/hyper active kid he he. yes it is for allergy. iapinephrine is a steroid and you will notice you that you will gain extra poundage while on it.for a long time which is not advisable due to its adverse effects from long term use (it wont help you at all if you want to lose weight, LOL)
davaoeagle July 2nd, 2006, 07:15 PM Ahead of the Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE), Durano also introduced Davao City as a new destination for the Chinese tourist market. "Davao, dubbed as culturally rich and teeming with diverse natural wonders amidst a bustling city will surely be enjoyed by many Chinese tourists as much as they enjoyed Cebu, Bohol, Boracay and Palawan."
BEIJING, China — After successfully reaching a record-breaking Chinese tourist arrivals of 107,456 from 39,581 in 2004, Tourism Secretary Ace Durano announced here recently that it is now setting its eyes on making the Philippines as the top Southeast Asian destination for Chinese tourists.
Speaking to a group of Chinese media and tour operators at the Ballroom of Marco Polo Xidan Hotel, Durano acknowledged the support of the Chinese travel agencies and the Philippine tour operators and resorts to the country’s tourism industry, which is now sustaining monthly numbers that are about five times the historical levels or more than a 400 percent increase from the Chinese outbound tourist market.
"China was not even among our top 10 source markets, but now, it is the 4th biggest source market in the Philippines, following the USA, Korea, and Japan," Durano said. "We are also proud of the fact that not only more and more Chinese tourists are coming to our destinations, but also many of them are returning visitors, impressed by their satisfying experiences in the Philippines."
Ahead of the Beijing International Tourism Expo (BITE), Durano also introduced Davao City as a new destination for the Chinese tourist market. "Davao, dubbed as culturally rich and teeming with diverse natural wonders amidst a bustling city will surely be enjoyed by many Chinese tourists as much as they enjoyed Cebu, Bohol, Boracay and Palawan."
Durano said that the goal is to attract over 350,000 tourists from Mainland China by 2010. "We are now expanding our collaboration with the travel trade here in China through greater brochure support and joint advertising. We will produce more collaterals in Mandarin to provide the travel agents and consumers with more information on the Philippines’ tourist destinations, products and services as well as tour packages," he added.
Meanwhile, the 3rd BITE held at the Beijing International Exhibition Centre and organized by the Beijing Tourism Administration (BTA), attracted an impressive turnout of more than 10,000 trade professionals and public.
Around 150 international visitors from 60 countries and regions participated including Hong Kong, Egypt, Australia, Japan, Czech Republic, India, France, Germany, Greece, Russia, Singapore, United Kingdom, Holland, Israel, Kenya, Slovenia, Mongolia, Spain, Tunisia, Switzerland and the Philippines.
Exhibitors were given an opportunity to meet and interact with at least 100 top buyers from China and another 100 international hosted buyers.
According to the World Trade Organization (WTO), China’s tourism and trade industry foreign visitor arrivals grew by 48 percent in 2004 compared with the previous year, with over 16 million more travelers. In addition, the Asia and Pacific region has seen an increase of 50 percent (34 million) in 2004, which means China’s tourism growth counted for almost half the increase of the entire region.
Other indicative statistics released by Chinese National Tourism Administration (CNTA) also reflect China’s tourism boom with 109.04 million inbound tourist arrivals to the Chinese mainland in 2004, breaking the 100 million mark for the first time, earning as $ 25.74 billion in tourism revenues. Besides inbound travel, outbound tourists from the Chinese mainland amounted to 28.85 million in 2004.
With the upcoming Beijing Olympics in 2008, China’s tourism industry is expected to heat up significantly.
China’s travel and tourism industry has grown exceptionally since the late 1970’s, when the country underwent economic policy reforms. Indeed, China’s membership in the World Trade Organization and future hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games and World Expo 2010 have rekindled awareness and interest in the country’s booming tourism market.
Based on statistics released by the National Bureau of Statistics and the China National Tourism Administration, inbound tourists to China reached 109.04 million in 2004. China netted .5 billion in tourist revenue from January to November, 2004, signifying an increase of 49.61 percent. The outbound tourists from the Chinese mainland amounted to 28.85 million in 2004, while domestic tourism revenue totaled 471.1 billion yuan ($ 58 billion) in that same year.
China is predicted to become the largest tourism destination and the fourth largest tourist source worldwide by 2020.
tj_brewed July 2nd, 2006, 07:19 PM Davao's Very Own.......Blu Gre' Cafe!
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a340/tj_brewed/_blugre4.jpg
BLUGRÉ COFFEE is Davao’s first and leading specialty coffee shop, founded in 1998 by husband and wife, Gatchi and Larcy Gatchalian, both Manileńos but consider themselves Davaowenyos by heart.
Blugré Coffee has two branches one in Landco Corporate Center, and at Matina Town Square, Davao City.
(It’s sister company is Kape’t Pandesal located at SM City Davao).
Established in June 1998, Blugré Coffee’s claim to fame is its signature drink, DURIAN GATCHPUCCINO, a hot cappuccino concoction that blends espresso and the fruit durian wonderfully. (Also available is Durian Larcepuccino, the cold version of Durian Gatchpuccino). It is dubbed as “the king of all coffees” (durian being the king of all fruits).
Blugré is responsible for creating a coffee culture in Davao, and leads the pack mainly because of the coffee lifestyle experience which Dabawenyos enjoy up to now.
Blugré Coffee is actually a spin-off from the couple’s clothing business under the brand BLUGRÉ. But the owners’ fascination and love for coffee led them to putting up not just a coffee place but a coffee brand. To the Dabawenyos, Blugré now is synonymous to great coffee experience.
Aside from your regular specialty coffee shop menu items like espresso, latte, mocha, cappuccino, Blugré also serves LARCEPUCCINO COFFEE, an ice-blended coffee drink which boasts of a variety of concoctions, and one drink is being served in what Blugré calls Larcepuccino Fun Cup, where the fun cup is “to go” serving as a souvenir of one’s memorable Blugré experience; LARCEPUCCINO CREAM, a non-coffee ice-blended drink; BLUGRÉ SHAKERS, variety of shakes with and without coffee, plus chocolate drinks, milk, and flavored tea drinks.
Blugré has also became famous for its line of desserts and pastries like its bestsellers Chocolate Chips Cake, Choco Torte with Cream Sauce, Chocolate Decadence Blueberry Cheesecake, Banana Cream Pie, Mango Cream Pie, Choco Dome, Banana Streusels, Oatmeal Fudge Bar, Cheese roll bites, and many more.
Blugré also offers pica-pica, panini (sandwiches), pasta, and heavy meals.
Blugré also carries merchandise items like souvenir shirts (men’s and ladies), ceramic mugs, stainless mugs, and frosted mugs in different sizes and shapes.
Fast-forward and SEVEN years after, Blugre is able to gain a strong foothold of the market due to its quality products, coffeeholic-friendly service, and marketing innovation.
Blugré Coffee was recently chosen as the National Shopper’s Choice as “Best Coffee Shop in Davao” as conferred Asia-Pacific Shopper’s Institute, Shopper’ Choice Magazine, Essence Privilege Card, and the Asian Philippine Association of Marketing Professionals FOR THE YEARS 2003, 2004 AND 2005; and just most recently, received the Philippine Marketing Excellence Award as the “Most Outstanding Coffee Shop in Davao City for 2004” awarded by the Asian Institute of Marketing and Entrepreneurship.

•Will a Davaoeño be the first Philippine Idol?
That’s the big question hovering over the impending start of the telecast of ABC 5’s Philippine Idol which is currently on the homestretch of nationwide auditions for Idol-worthy aspirants. Hundreds showed up for the auditions at SM supermalls in Zamboanga, Cagayan de Oro and Davao, but only Davaoeños were given the "gold passes" to go to the next round.
Auditions were held at the Waterfront Insular Hotel in Davao City. Davao is a rich source of showbiz talent. Among those who hail from there are ethnic diva Cynthia Alexander, M.Y.M.P., Freestyle, South Border, Gary Granada and Joey Ayala.
Among the "lucky 17" are Manhattan-based Jamie Barcelon, brother and sister Armarie Lourdes and Armando Cruz, Ritchie Asibal and Archie Regencia (a fashion designer and an ethnic dancer of the Subano Tribe). Tomorrow, July 4, the Philippine Idol auditions will be held at the International Academy of Film and TV (Bigfoot Productions) in Cebu.

@ dave you asked me what a "tuff tjej" is, it is a girl (tjej is a gypsy- roman word that Sweden borrowed, means girl) that is brave (tuff) and even if she is scared she will be brave and trust her own strength and powers...and never give up...so "tuff tjej" is something to be in this world, among a lot of male powers... :)

Davao wants tourists to go loco over coco-banana farms
Davao City -- If you’re getting tired of visiting southern Mindanao’s usual tourism destinations, why not try coco-banana tours in Davao del Norte and Davao Oriental?
Over the weekend, the regional office of the Department of Tourism said it would be promoting travels to Davao del Norte’s and Davao Oriental’s agribusiness sites.
Tourism officials said those sites, maintained by private companies, could be a major point of interest among local and foreign tourists. Davao del Norte’s banana plantations, for instance, are regarded as the most efficient in the world with each hectare producing at least $10,000 worth of fruits annually, offering an average price of 20 US cents per kilo of Cavendish banana in the international market.
Banana farming, harvesting and the packaging system of local plantations have also been updated and are now comparable to advanced technologies in Latin America. Visitors would also have the chance to explore opportunities in agribusiness in this part of the country.
Davao del Norte, about an hour away east of this city, is the country’s banana industry capital and home to such agribusiness giants as Tagum Agricultural Development Co., Marsman, Lapanday and Stanfilco.
Neighboring province Davao Oriental, meanwhile, is the country’s largest coconut producer, exceeding Quezon province’s output, in Luzon, since the ’80s.
The regional office of the Department of Tourism said the routes, coordinated by the respective provincial tourism offices are not only meant to lure traditional tourists, but to show potential investors what the two provinces are offering.
Agribusiness ventures in the Davao Region generally yield high financial returns.
The Department of Tourism said it would be promoting travels to Davao del Norte’s and Davao Oriental’s agribusiness sites, specifically banana and coconut plantations. Tourism officials said those sites, maintained by private companies, could be a major point of interest among local and foreign tourists. Davao del Norte’s banana plantations, for instance, are regarded as the most efficient in the world, with each hectare producing at least $10,000 worth of fruits annually, offering an average price of 20 US cents per kilo of Cavendish banana in the international market.
Davao Region, regarded as the most progressive in Mindanao, comprises the two provinces mentioned, this city, Compostela Valley, whose economy is anchored on mining and farming, and Davao del Sur, which is a major exporter of high-value crops and coconut products.
The Tourism department said Davao del Norte’s banana industry could still accommodate newcomers. From less than 30,000 hectares in the early part of the decade, commercial-scale banana farms in the Davao Region has grown to roughly 35,000 hectares, exporting over $375 million annually. It is estimated that up to two-thirds of Philippine banana exports come from Davao del Norte, the rest from neighboring provinces and this city.
Provincial officials said the banana tour designed for Davao del Norte would include a visit to an orchid farm in Kapalong town. Aside from plantations, the tours would cover trips to banana flour and chip-processing plants. Davao del Norte currently hosts close to a dozen small- and medium-scale banana- processing firms producing flour and chips for local and export markets.
In the last 10 years, the banana industry has been a major contributor to the local economy, not only in generating jobs for the locals but in terms of attracting related investment for plants manufacturing packaging materials, transport-related infrastructure, and plantation-support operations, such as agrochemical and equipment dealerships and facilities.
Davao del Norte’s neighbor, Davao Oriental, said the regional Tourism office, could also harness its coconut farms and facilities for tourism purposes. Like the Davao del Norte banana tours, the coconut route would also have side trips to other sites such as the Menzi fruit plantation and a Mandaya tribe weaving center.
The "Coco-Loco Business Tour" package would generally include visits to plantations, a copra export facility, coco-coir plant and other small enterprises dependent on the output of the tree, which has hundreds of domestic and industrial uses.
In recent months, producers have also started to explore small-scale, village-based production of virgin coconut oil to boost the income of rural-based coconut farmers.
Visitors could avail of both coconut and banana tour packages considering the sites are accessible from each other in an hour or two.
This part of Mindanao is generally secure and has adequate infrastructure support, especially mobile communications, and international-class lodging.
The Davao Region, with this city as hub, has been a major tourism destination attracting over half-a-million tourists annually, with up to 20% of this number holding foreign passports. The region’s traditional attractions, located mostly in this city and its vicinity, are the beaches and diving spots, nature parks and resorts, as well as cultural events that highlight traditional practices of local tribes.
Japanese nationals are among the largest group of tourists in the Davao Region with some old-timers visiting sites of the first Japanese settlement in the archipelago established in 1903. Sources claimed over 30,000 residents in this city and in the neighboring provinces are of Japanese ancest
tj_brewed July 2nd, 2006, 11:04 PM good morning rajah!!! ei thats alright...ok lang yun! ehehehehhehehe it means that Davao is one of the best investment havens in the country from ICT, Tourism to Agriculture... :) :) :)

davaoeagle July 2nd, 2006, 11:37 PM Program connects Davao del Sur town to the Internet
By Alexander Villafania
INQ7.net
Last updated 00:42am (Mla time) 07/03/2006
THE SMALL farming town of Magsaysay in Davao del Sur does not have a single telephone landline.
Although barely 21 kilometers away from Digos City, its farmers rely largely on door-to-door communications to get news of the outside world. Occasionally, a few residents send text messages through their mobile phones – if there’s an available signal.
But just this month, its few hundred residents have finally become connected to other towns of Davao and to the rest of the world through collaborative efforts by the Open Academy for Philippine Agriculture (OPAPA), the University of Southern Mindanao and Philippine Rice Research Institute (Philrice).
Magsaysay town has become the first example of the “Konekted Na!” (Now Connected) program that aims to open new communication opportunities for small farming communities through wireless interconnections.
Its proponents say the project can be replicated in other remote farming areas that do not have basic telecommunications facilities.
Under the Konekted Na! project, several of Magsaysay town’s schools and cooperatives connect to a wireless Internet link through a shared backbone installed in Digos City.
Among the cooperatives and schools that are wirelessly linked are the Barayon National High School, Department of Education North Elementary School and South Elementary School, Holy Cross of Magsaysay school, Magsaysay Academy, the Magsaysay Farmers Multipurpose Cooperative and the Badagoy Irrigators Association.
The connection features voice-over-Internet Protocol (VOIP) capabilities to allow the town’s residents to call regular landline phones in Davao del Sur through the Internet.
The Konekted Na! project is also part of the OPAPA’s ongoing nationwide computerization project aimed at teaching agricultural and forestry experts and farmers to use the Internet both for keeping up with the latest agricultural trends and for commercial trading of goods.
The OPAPA has also just finished the first nationwide Knowledge Networking for Enterprising Agricultural Communities (K-AGRINET) project that utilized modified information technology buses as mobile classrooms for farmer and agricultural worker training.
In a previous interview with INQ7.net, OPAPA director Roger Barroga said the purpose of Konekted Na! was to convince local government units (LGUs) to consider using wireless means of communications for municipalities that lack infrastructure.
Likewise, he said the OPAPA is willing to help LGUs that are hoping to implement similar programs. “Luckily for us, the interest for such a project is really high, especially in extremely rural areas. By using wireless technology, farmers would be able to keep up with the trends in farming techniques and become self-reliant.”

SiliconGulf July 3rd, 2006, 08:19 AM We need to play catch up. Jason - our lumad in Silicon Valley - is on his way home to help us.
The formula appears to be the real synergy of business + academe + the nerds.
Let's hope for the best. :)
Hello, Konsehal. I'm back in Davao. It feels good to be back. :)
I'm awaiting word from the Chamber of Commerce as to when I can meet them to talk about the ICT Council. From there, we map out a strategy to work with Rodney Jao's ASID, as well as PSITE courtesy of Edwin Maranon, taking care of the business + academe side.

KulasKusgan July 3rd, 2006, 02:41 PM @ dave you asked me what a "tuff tjej" is, it is a girl (tjej is a gypsy- roman word that Sweden borrowed, means girl) that is brave (tuff) and even if she is scared she will be brave and trust her own strength and powers...and never give up...so "tuff tjej" is something to be in this world, among a lot of male powers... :)
aw, tuff also tough. thanks tuff tjej lena.

This is one of my favorite buildings in Davao City. I like its design! To those who haven't been to Davao, the building you're looking at is Davao's Techno Trade Resources Corporate Center.
What is TechnoTrade?
Necessity, which is oftentimes referred to as the mother of inventions made its mark in the evolution of TECHNO-TRADE RESOURCES (DAVAO) INC., when it manufactured its flagship, the Philippines first and only export quality thermoplastic roofing, METALPLAS.
At the time, all plastic roofing materials manufactured in the Philippines were of the cheap, brittle and the interior types, which big name plastic manufacturers would not venture to improve on or produce one of which is superior in quality. But TECHNO-TRADE was not one that played by ear. Instead, the company took the challenges positively, with its strong determination proved, their detractors wrong. It rose above these challenges established its foothold in the Philippines then as the sole manufacturer of high-quality plastic roofing materials.
Borne out of a need to create a revolutionary roofing that can withstand the worst weather conditions yet overcome the negative characteristics of both metal-based and plastic roofing. TECHNO-TRADE, embarked on a search and research endeavor all over the world which resulted in the breakthrough product, METALPLAS - Metallic Plastic roofing.
Fourteen years of experience in the manufacture of plastic roofing today, METALPLAS is already a worldwide commodity as well as an export quality product. TECHNO-TRADE became the trendsetter in the plastic roofing industry.
From its flagship product, METALPLAS, the country's first and only exported thermoplastic roofing, TECHNO-TRADE has diversified into the production of PE-TECH HDPE pipes & CORTECH Corrugated flexible electrical pipes. Currently, the company is embarking on an expansion program to come out with new PVC products by mid-2002.
Using state-of-the-art German equipment and process for its quality products, TECHNO-TRADE RESOURCES (DAVAO), INC., is located in an environment-friendly plant in Agdao, Davao City. The plant is considered as one of the most advanced in Asia. It has offices in Davao, Makati, and Cebu cities to serve its growing clientele nationwide as well as worldwide.
Throughout its 17 fruitful years of existence, TECHNO TRADE has proven that determination - the drive to pursue one's vision - remains to be the foundation on which its successfully gained its reputation as the roofing material manufacturer that can provide excellent and quality roofing needs for the nation and the world. METALPLAS is being currently exported to countries such as Australia, Vietnam, Papa New Guinea, Hongkong, and other Asia-Pacific countries. Apart from these, inquiries for orders were received from Spain, Tobago and South Africa. Among the applications of METALPLAS by these countries are various housing units, factories, pharmaceutical, and industry plants and currently, the MTR (Mass Transit Railways) system in Hongkong, which was constructed by a New Zealand based company ordered and delivered last August, 1998. It is also being used and specified for entertainment and amusement centers as well as gas stations and oil refineries. :)

What's your comment regarding Pilita Corrales' statement: " DAvao is not the place to look for an idol. all the good ones are here in Cebu."

tj_brewed July 3rd, 2006, 03:27 PM Celebrating Dabawenyos Entrepreneurship Spirit!
Davao’s very own CitiHardware!
Citihardware was opened in November of 1998. The first store was the Bajada outlet. A 1,700 square meter property located along the busy J.P. Laurel Avenue. It was named Cityhardware, the builders depot. The store was stocked with core products focused on construction finishing materials. Citihardware was founded by Decoarts Marketing, Inc. an architectural company which was establish in 1976. It started as a small hardware store with 5 personnel in a rented space along Ponciano Reyes St. in downtown Davao City. Gradually, it acheived recognition in the community as a company that provides high value products and services to its customers. From its humble beginnings, its corporate network grew by leaps and bounds. As of January 2006, there are 15 branches in different major cities in Visayas and Mindanao. More Citihardware outlets will be opened soon.

WawaY[625] July 3rd, 2006, 03:40 PM its funny, among the countless threads about cities and topics under the sun here, only davao skipped the thread 13! from 12 straight to 14, but anyway, good day folks.
sa architecture kasi, allergic kami sa #13, like in buildings, we skip the 13th floor and call it 14th floor agad, so when i started the thread, i skipped 13..FENG SHUI kuno hahaha

KulasKusgan July 3rd, 2006, 03:51 PM What's your comment regarding Pilita Corrales' statement: " DAvao is not the place to look for an idol. all the good ones are here in Cebu."
Francis, meanwhile, had a different interpretation about the outcome of the Mindanao Auditions. "Hindi nila gaanong kina-career tulad ng sa Luzon Auditions," he wrote in his online journal. "The (contestants) were very polite and have a cavalier attitude," the Master Rapper added.

Speaking of hospitals, kumusta na yung expansion ng Medical Mission Tower? its a 12 storey building right? 12 or 15? diba they had a press release 'bout it late last year?
