After its successful operation in Mindanao, a Davao-based petroleum company is now looking at expanding its presence in the Visayas and Luzon areas through franchising.
Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. is one of the many exhibitors during the recently held 9th Franchising Expo at SM City Cebu.
In an interview with its brand manager Francis Joseph F. Magbitang, he said that they have always been utilizing franchising as part of their company's expansion program.
Right now, the company already boasts of having 70 gasoline stations in Mindanao alone, which makes them the fastest growing petroleum company in the country in terms of retail stations.
He said that 80 percent of these stations are operated by franchisees while 20 percent are company owned.
Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. has grown from a Filipino family venture to become one of the successful businesses in Davao and the Southern Mindanao areas after it started operations in January 2004 distributing petroleum products to various commercial entities.
Engaged in the business of trading refined petroleum products, lubricants and other chemical products, operation of oil depots and storage facilities, and allied services, mainly in Southern Philippines, the company's products and services are distributed and marketed under the "Phoenix Fuels Life" trademark.
In June 2005, Phoenix opened its first retail service station and at the end of 2007, the number of stations had grown to more than 50 in Southern Mindanao.
Phoenix targets a total of 100 service stations by end of 2008 and expects to have a total of 400 retail stations by the end of 2012, said Magbitang.
Three new stations will soon be opened in Mindanao and one in Manila and in the Visayas area this October.
The franchise package of Phoenix amounts to about P350, 000 to P500,000 and they envision to compete head on with the petroleum industry's big three: Shell, Petron and Caltex through aggressively growing their business operations and expanding their network as well as its product lines.
Phoenix Petroleum is the exclusive Philippine distributor of Emarat Lubricants, a major petroleum company based in the United Arab Emirates.
They source majority of their oil supply from PTT, the biggest petroleum company in Thailand and a subsidiary of Phoenix, PFL Management Services manages 6 PTT stations in Luzon.
In July 11, 2007, Phoenix Petroleum under the symbol PNX launched its initial public offering, becoming the first independent oil company and the first company from Davao City to be listed in the Philippine Stock Exchange after the oil deregulation law was passed in 1998.

3rd largest economy in the country? thats alright...based on the underlined words, Davao city's economy was not compared to Manila City and Cebu City???it was compared sa whole metropolitan areas ng dalawa???
i reckon davao's economy will be the first in the future, with all its resources, vast land area to be developed and tourist spots that are still to be discovered by many...:)
Hi Davaob4now,
Re your qoute about Davao having the 3rd largest economy, that article does not pertain to Davao's economy as the 3rd largest in the country. It actually refers to the size of deposits/accounts held by Davao banks, as being the third largest in the country. In other words, maraming pera dito :), #3 in the Philippines.

Dabawenyo's call to save world mountains reaches Scandinavia
By Jean D. Abangan
Davao City (18 September) -- The Davao-grown movement calling to save the mountains of the world has expanded worldwide and has recently caught support of the peoples in Scandinavia.
Internet information says Scandinavia is a region of Northern Europe that geographically consists of Norway and Sweden (two countries that form the Scandinavian Peninsula) and the country of Denmark.
In modern times, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands (Faeroe) are also considered part of this geographical area, especially in terms of cultural and historic relationships.
Human Development International (HDI) touched based with the Philippine-Norway Foundation (PNF) based in Skjeberg, Norway to re-echo the Call to Save the Mountains of the World.
September 12, 2008, HDI founder John Ryan Largo, a Dabawenyo, and PNF Chairperson Kjell Roar Iversen together with HDI ambassadress Laida Pagado Quidato went up Mt. Galdhopiggen, known to be the highest summit in Scandinavia and in the European Artic located in the North Pole Region.
An internet publication of HDI said Mt. Galdhopiggen rises 2,469 meters above sea level (asl) and it is described as a rocky mountain in Jotunheimen, Norway.
The climb participants said they had gone through grueling hours of threading through steep rocks and boulders before finally reaching the mountain summit where they raised the banner, bearing the Call to Save the Mountains of the World.
While raising the banner with Iversen, Largo was quoted as saying at the top of his voice "we are calling upon all those who have the power, the opportunity, and dedication to initiate, support and maintain local, international, and global interaction, where resources are collectively pooled, institutionally arranged, and effectively utilized for a common direction, to save the mountains of the world."
HDI launched call in March 2002 at the Philippines' highest peak in Mt. Apo.
Since then, "HDI has re-echoed the call in many mountains and places" including Mount Everest which cuts across Nepal and Tibet in China and in Mt. Mount Yosemite in California, U.S.A., Largo revealed in an internet interview.
Largo noted how the mountains around the world "continue to be degraded" and that "their ability to provide us with air we breathe, the water we drink and other life-giving sustenance has been destroyed."
Largo explained that mountains are habitat of forest which serves as natural sinks of carbon dioxide that causes global warming.
"Likewise mountains, as great water towers, provide water to the lowlands for woodlands and other vegetation to grow, thereby enhancing the ability of plants and trees to absorb carbon dioxide, immensely helping address our problem on climate change," he said
Largo is feeling "a deep sense of pride, being a Filipino" who has spread
the words of "cooperation and compassion which we have to manifest in our thoughts and action if we are to thwart off the inconvenient truth of Earth's doomsday."
He was referring to reported possible destruction caused by global warming. (PIA XI) [top]

MtApoStandard September 18th, 2008, 04:19 AM Dabawenyo Minerals has partnered with two foreign companies in developing a 6,906-hectare mining area in Davao Oriental.
Mr. Sayre said the company had signed a joint-venture deal with Phil Yaobang Corp. of China, and is preparing to enter into a separate agreement with Hanwa Co. Ltd. of Japan.
Mr. Sayre, who owns Daba-wenyo Minerals with his former comrades at the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), said host towns would be prioritized for mining-related jobs.
The Chinese company, he said, has started building a road network for a 1,000-hectare mining area that it will develop within the boundaries of Mati City and Lupon, both in Davao Oriental. Dabawenyo Minerals signed the deal with Yaobang three months ago.
Meanwhile, the Japanese company, which has yet to finalize the deal with Dabawenyo Minerals, will develop a 5,000-hectare mineral reservation area, Mr. Sayre said.
Another company from Taiwan, which he declined to name, is also interested in developing the remaining 906-hectare area also held by Dabawenyo Minerals.
The Chinese and Japanese companies, he added, have agreed to put up their processing plants in Davao Oriental.
Yaobang is planning to build its own wharf. The site it is developing is within the villages of Tagbinonga, Don Salvador Lopez and Taguibo in Mati City and Don Mariano Marcos in Lupon.
Geologists hired by Daba-wenyo Minerals earlier found that the site has significant deposits of iron, copper, manganese, gold, molybdenum and boron.

Mindanao Heart Center goes digital
By Bob on Oct 29, 2006 in News
Davao City (28 October) — The Mindanao Heart Center, the only kind in Mindanao region, is now equipped with state-of-the-art medical equipment in digital imaging technologies. The state-of-the-art medical equipment at the Mindanao Heart Center acquired under the auspices of the Dutch government was recently inaugurated at the Davao Medical center compound and was attended by dignitaries from the Netherlands and top local government officials.
Among thos who graced the inauguration were led by the Dutch Ambassador to the Philippines Robert Vornis; Engr. Francois Engelbrecht, ORET project implementation manager; House Majority Leader Congressman Prospero Nograles; Congressman Vincent Garcia of Davao’s 2nd district.
Others in attendance were Philips Philippines President and CEO Menardo Mateo; DOH ASEC Nemesio Gako; Dr. Criselda Abesamis, Director, National Center for Health Facility Dev’t; DMC chief of hospital, Dr. Gerardo Cunanan; Dr. Paulun Jean Rosell-Ubial, DOH XI Director Center for Health Dev’t Davao region; City Councilor Dr. Rene Lopez; and DMC chief Nurse Vilma Comoda.
In 2004, a trilateral partnership between the Department of Health, the Netherlands government and Philips was initiated under DOH Health Sector Reform program.
Philips President and CEO Mateo, in his speech said “I believe that the cornerstrone of the reform program has been rooted in a basic philosophy that - Health is Wealth, that the more healthy people we have in our respective communities, the more healthy and prosperous nation we will become.”
Stakeholders and partners in this endeavor has upgraded the capabilities of the five key government specialty hospitals by providing them with the state-of-the-art medical equipment in digital imaging technologies.
The beneficiaries, under the ORET program, as mentioned by ORET project manager Engr. Engelbrecht include: the DMC, Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Philippine Heart Center, Northern Mindanao Medical Center, and the Bicol Regional Teaching and Training center.
At the heart of this project is a web-enabled healthcare system which will connect the regional hospitals and allow patients’ records to be read and diagnosed by specialists at the Philippine Heart Center, which is known as the Center of excellence in cardiovascular care.
The project would provide patients in Metro Davao and its neighboring provinces greater access to these world-class care services at very affordable cost at a very specialized diagnostic intervention.
The complete installation and commissioning of Philips Single Plance Cathlab equipment in this cardiovascular center fulfills the dream of Davaoeños to make things better, to touch lives everyday and make a difference to the lives of the people we serve, said Philips president Mateo. (PIA)

o well if investor was after to locate and serious for another project/expansion, it will not gamble on delays that would cost them losses in turn. signs were there early on. problems got the attention of malacaniang. malacaniang was there and talked to investors for compromises and assurances. provincial, city and local governments sat down and came up for settlements and compromises. a forumer claimed official telling people engineering equipments are still inside. everybody have thrown support that everything were settled. what else was lacking? why investor needed to wait for september if everybody were in full support for them.

paulkrps September 20th, 2008, 01:35 PM John Milton and Paradise Lost
Blind Man Achieves Immortality
(Second of a Three-Part Series)
By Phillip Somozo
Davao Surreal Artist features in New York Exhibit celebrating John Milton and Paradise Lost
Juan Luna and Felix Resurreccion Hidalgo* were the first Filipino visual artists to achieve international recognition by virtue of their winning gold and silver medals, respectively, in international painting competitions in 19th century Europe, during years when Modernism was still swelling as a wave to eventually sweep the world. Luna, especially, did it as a form of propaganda disclosing imperialist Spain’s unjust treatment of its then colony, Las Islas Filipinas. Unknown to these two Philippine art icons, a trail of artist followers would form behind them a century later, in terms of desiring to be recognized internationally, this time as a way out of the difficult artist condition (whose condition is easy anyway?) in the Philippines. As result, a number of contemporary pinoy painters are now represented by established galleries in some of the world’s art centers. Whether they are financially better off now and happier is, of course, another question.
Bienvenido Bones Banez is a surrealist artist from Davao City who is not after monetary rewards in his artistic pursuits, but is definitely happier since he based himself in New York because he is experiencing acceptance and recognition of his talent. Now, he is posed to enter the portals of art history as the only Filipino invited to exhibit work in what is projected to be the grandest-ever celebration honoring the blind man-turned-literary immortal John Milton and his classic masterpiece, Paradise Lost. Banez’s participation is more significant in that of the more than 60 visual artists from all over the world, who will display work, he is one of only three who are distinguished as featured.
In his emailed letter to this writer, WAH Center President and Executive Director Terrance Lindall announced that*Bienvenido Bones Banez has been named a "Featured Artist" in the Paradise Lost show in September 27-November 2, 2008, at the Williamsburg Art & Historical Center in Brooklyn, NYC, USA, along with two other outstanding artists, Kris Kuksi and Rich Buckler. Terrance said of Ben (Banez’s nickname):
"I know of no artist whose work so sincerely expresses his heart felt belief and knowledge that we live in a Satanic time. Ben calls this his '666 World.' He sees humans as possessing the ability to make a Paradise on Earth and yet devoting their energies for wealth, power, and self gratification at the expense of their fellow beings. It is a contradiction to pursue selfish interests for one's own satisfaction by creating misery for one's neighbor. No lasting satisfaction can ultimately come from it. Ben is right in that Satan surely has the world in his clutches while encouraging nations and individuals to dominate one another for wealth and resources. Until another Jesus or Ghandi appears to lead us to the light, we are in dark times and dire straits. One should look deeply into Ben's paintings to see what we have become and are becoming in this '666 World'. True poets and artists must be called upon to sound the alarm. Ben has answered the call!
“He paints as if he is plugged into a wall socket and the energy that pours forth through his brain and fingertips to the canvas comes out in pulses of scintillating colors,” adds Lindall.
Kris Kuksi is one of the most highly regarded artists in the contemporary surreal/visionary movement. His work is in the collection of Chris Weitz, Director of the movie, The Golden Compass, based upon Philip Pullman’s book and grounded in John Milton’s Paradise Lost. Richard “Rich” Buckler is an American comic book artist best known for his work on Marvel Comics’ The Fantastic Four in the mid-1970s. He will be producing a portrait of John Milton for the 21st century, unveiling of which will be at the Costume Ball.
Of the participating performing artists, Polish surrealist fashion designer Olek, herself a stunning beauty, will be of particular interest to beholders of the absurdly beautiful as she unravels her latest unique creation with her company of models parading, preening and posing throughout all three floors of the exhibit venue during the ball (see sample photo of her 2003 debut also at WAH Center). Another is playwright/musician/composer Peter Dizozza, described as an “incredibly unique talent,” who will present his musical mystery play “Paradise Found!”
Other performing artists are scheduled intermittently to grace the celebration all the way to November 2: the jazz bar-favorite JC Hopkins Biggish Swing Band; Yana Schnitzler with Human Kinetics Movement Arts—a “mesmerizing”, interactive, cutting-edge dance group; a band of musicians led by Arthur Kirmss dressed in 17th century costume belting out Baroque tunes; and poet S. David as tour guide.
The historical exhibit includes Miltonia; a handwritten Torah scroll of the Book of Genesis— approximately 300 to 400 years old, original copies of Paradise Lost; old woodcuts and engravings; and Royal British memorabilia.
Entrance ticket to the ball is very affordable at $40 for art and entertainment that could go into the annals of history.
*Simon Flores y de la Rosa was reported by the Ayala Museum as having won silver award in the Philadelphia Universal Exposition in 1876, several years earlier than Luna and Hidalgo earned their medals; thus, accordingly, should be credited as the first Filipino artist to receive international recognition.
(Watch out for the concluding Third Part of this series after the grand costume ball in September 28!)

tj_brewed September 20th, 2008, 02:28 PM Mining to make Davao RP's top performing region - NEDA
DAVAO CITY, Sept. 19 — The Davao region is expected to be the top performing region in the Philippines if and when mining operations led by foreign-owned mining firms are allowed go full blast in their mining projects.
This was the stand made by the region's National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) director Nicanor Augustin recently on the issue of increasing mining investments in the region.
"Mining remains the only hope for Davao region to boost and sustain its growth and development," Augustin said.
The NEDA regional director, said if more mining investments come into the Davao region and more mining activities increase, "Davao can surpass other regions in the country and be the top performing region nationwide."
The flurry of activities in the mining sector was credited for boosting and propping up the sagging Davao region's economy last year which enabled the region to post a robust 6.7 per cent growth in the total 2007 Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP).
According to statistics released recently by NEDA, mining posted an impressive 11 percent growth last year pushing the growth in the industry sector to 9.6 percent, offsetting the sluggish growth in the agriculture sector and a slight decline in the services sector.
Augustin however, cautioned that the government will only advocate "responsible mining" to safeguard the environment and health of people living around or near the mining areas.
"When we talk of mining, we only mean responsible mining. We don't want to see indiscriminate diggings or a large extraction that only leaves behind destruction and devastation, wiping out our forests and rivers," Augustin said.
Augustin warned that the government will only give permits and licenses to mining companies that can afford to invest in new mining technology that protects the environment even while digging for minerals under the ground.
Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz expressed optimism that the various mining investments now flowing into the Davao region will contribute to the sustained growth in the region.
"As long as we stick to responsible mining with the government overseeing its operations very closely, the revitalized mining industry can be sustained over the long term and contribute substantially to the growth of the region," she said. (PNA)

Davao Vibe
By Jinggoy Salvador
THE scene was tranquil, totally relaxed.
Is it a blessing or is it a curse? This city seems to be devoid of the high-energy scene we have so gotten used to. Or am I getting to old? Why is it that I don't know where everyone is? Or, is there anything happening at all?
Hmmm, there must be a new scene in town.
Yes, the more rugged type of scene, the so-called "cowboy" scene. "Brokeback-an" or better yet the, "Bakbak-an" scene. It's funny that everyone is crowding (more of flooding) Torres street especially on a weekend and seems to be enjoying the "outdoor" fun with freezing cold beer. Nocturnal souls are getting into their alternative weekend activity. It doesn't involve the mood lighting or the thumping beat of house music.
Thus, in this zone, the mushroom-like sprouting of the al fresco chugging arena welcomes everyone, and I mean everyone. No dress code (fashion absentia) just plain janes (oops). Okay, plain jeans rather. Day to night, work to leisure (manual labor included) fashion is totally fine. I call this place the great equalizer.
But luckily during the merry month of our festival, somewhere around the far corner of the perpendicular street, a very familiar beat was pumping through the tight night air that seem to be trying to get a message across. As you get closer, happy tunes complement the bass- house music. Thank God!
On this corner (now it's like a boxing match), the all familiar drum and bass and flashing laser lights seem to say, welcome home. Nice. Yes, I must be getting old. Or it is just I never did change my preference as to what my kind of nightlife is. It still involves dancerous tunes and intoxicating liquids. So reminiscent of the disco era.
We used to import DJs from the good ol' cosmo Philippine capital to be the Pied Piper of our parties. The very choosy Davao crowd seems to be more interested in what this Manila talent can serve. For a while, it's this guy from this chic club, and the next and the next.
Now, it has changed. For the better. There is the appreciation for the music now rather than who is flinging those silver plates on the deck. Of course, taste will still matter. But with the easily accessible tunes from the music stores or downloadable from the net, Davao music has the latest.
Luckily, we now have our own troupe of local spinsters that means discjockeys- that can "bring the house down". And recently, they converged for a night of showing off. Yeah, something we Dabawenyoscan really be proud of.
They all took turns and played god and have everyone in the party dance to their every tune. That includes me as well. And yes, I can say that it is so freakin' great to be home...to the vibe and grooved 'til the break of dawn with the oh so gorgeous people that makes the shindig noteworthy.

1 of the best advices I've read so far. I really don't know when this war started. For me the conflict is really not between or among Cities but the forumers themselves. It's embarrassing that they ended up hating not just their alleged adversaries but the opposing party's hometown as well. We know how it hurts when someone says bad about your place - as what has been said - we could not please anybody, if one is bitter about your place, lets throw our attacks not to the "Place" wala namang kinalaman yun but dun sa culprit kasi it will only inflict that WAR or Conflict which we all despise...let's move on nalang & focus on the positive things in life. :)

“Death Clock’ for Davao City smokers unveiled
Davao City’s seven-year anti-smoking is up for amendment that could give the landmark legislation stronger teeth.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, who personally urged the Davao City Council approved the ordinance in 2001, said he is asking city councilors to study his new proposals on the Anti-Smoking Ordinance that had business establishments setting up smoking rooms to protect public health.
It was not known what would be the proposals of Mayor Duterte, a heavy smoker who quit the vice twenty years ago.
But on Friday, Mayor Duterte unveiled at City Hall a huge billboard detailing death statistics from smoking. Hung at the entrance to City Hall, the bill board has been named “ Death Clock” in what is seen as an attempt to scare people from burning their lungs with cigarette smoke.
Duterte has been a staunch advocate of the ordinance since it was passed, and has formed the Anti-Smoking Task Force to run after violators. Some establishments initially opposed the ban in deference to foreigners who smoke in hotels but a case filed against the city government had not prospered with the complainant a five-star hotel backing out from the case to set up its own smoking room. The ordinance bans smoking in moving public utility vehicles, public places including parks, hotels and motels and restaurants and other areas where people converge.
The passage of the Davao City Anti-Smoking Ordinance, the first in the country, has been adopted by other local government units in the country and had also spawned similar anti-smoking legislation in other countries.
Dr. Domilyn Villareiz, Anti-Smoking Task Force chief, said the Death Clock would further strengthen the smoking ban with its graphic message about the danger of smoking to public health.
