Biz group urges conversion of old airport to trade center
THE Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) passed a resolution requesting the City Government of Davao to urge the Department of Transportation and Communication to convert the old Davao International Airport Terminal to an international air cargo, logistics, and trade center.
Based on a copy of the resolution furnished by DCCCII, it said "the identified cargo volume of Davao Airport has been growing for the last three years and has been hampered by the lack of available space on passenger aircraft and the absence of facilities specifically tailored for air cargo."
DCCCII said there is a need to provide immediate and rapid transport of highly perishable goods such as fruits and vegetables to markets in Luzon and Visayas to ensure continuous supply and also to stabilize the price of these commodities.
The chamber also said that the old Davao International Airport Terminal only needs minimal improvements since it still has the facilities for it to become a viable trade center. Thus, it urges the City Government to enact a resolution to convert the old airport terminal to international trade center.
DCCCII added that the city should take advantage of this since it is the major hub of air transportation in Mindanao with majority of passenger and cargo traffic passing through the city's international airport.
The resolution was passed earlier this month and copies provided to the Office of the President, Office of the City Mayor, and other government agencies concerned. (JGRS)

Silicon Gulf
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Silicon Gulf sealSilicon Gulf is a nickname for Davao City and extends to the Davao Region, at Southern Mindanao, Philippines. The nickname refers to the growing number of Information Technology and IT Enabled Services (or ITES) companies sprouting in the area. The name was adapted from Silicon Valley, referring to the high tech cluster located in the San Francisco Bay Area in northern California.
Davao Region is one of the regions of the Philippines, located on the southeastern portion of Mindanao. Davao Region consists of four provinces, namely: Compostela Valley, Davao, Davao del Sur, and Davao Oriental. The region encloses the Davao Gulf and its regional center is Davao City.
Silicon Gulf is part of the Philippine Cyber Corridor.
Origin
The Silicon Gulf Initiative was officially announced by Jason Banico in October 6, 2006, during the ICT Davao, Inc. launch at the Royal Mandaya Hotel in Davao City. The initiative emphasized radical collaboration between government, academia and industry in harnessing technical talent and information-oriented manpower as the key driving force in transforming the city from an agricultural / industrial economy to a knowledge-based one.
Its primary objective is to build Davao City's ICT capacity through developing talent in the areas of "technopreneurship", IT project management, and core technical skills.
Silicon Gulf Cyberparks
Damosa IT Park
The ICT park zone being developed by Damosa Land Incorporated is composed of 22,983 square meters (about 300,000 sq ft) of land located along J.P. Laurel Avenue which would accommodate two information technology buildings; data building; commercial and a utility building that would have an unlimited power supply.
The primary stage of development involves the establishment of the ICT building covering some 1,326 square meters (about 15,500 sq ft) of land along J.P. Laurel Avenue. Ricardo Floirendo, Damosa Land Inc. senior vice-president, said the call center company Link2Support, which also operates in Cagayan de Oro City and Manila, has committed to operate in the building in November. He said the company would put a 200-seater center that would boost the outsourcing business here.
Based on their plans, the IT building would be installed with high-speed fiber-optic telecommunication backbone and high-speed international gateway facility or wide-area network. Floirendo said they would initially be investing P20-million for the first phase of the ICT zone.
Davao City
Given its potentials to become a “center of excellence” in Information Communications and Technology (ICT), Davao City is declared as an IT HUB area in the Philippines by the National Telecommunications Office per memorandum # 05-05-200.
As a modern metropolis bustling with life, verve and color, situated in a typhoon-free zone with a land area of 2,440 km˛ touted as one of the world’s largest, recent study made by the Asian Institute of Management through a project called “Philippine Cities Competitiveness Program” revealed that the City is the Most Competitive City in the Philippines (Urban Category) with the lowest cost of Doing Business.

In the area of real estate, Davao City has huge open spaces that can be developed into an IT Park or IT Building. There are five (5) major hotels and more than 10 business inns.
In the area of vendor support, large vendors in Manila and Cebu are now in Davao City to cater the requirements of local companies in terms of hardware and software namely: GlobalChips Technologies, Co; Trinet Multimedia Systems Corporation; Micro-D International, etc.
In the area of power infrastructure, Davao City has the most stable power supply and one the cheapest rates in the country. Its power utility company, the Davao Light and Power Company has a backup power supply of 44 MW at its Bajada Power Plant. In the last 5 years, there was no recorded incidence of massive power shortage and blackouts.
In the area of transportation, a total of 189,621 motor vehicles in the region were registered in the Land Transportation Office (LTO) XI in 2005 distributed as follows: motorcycles & tricycles - 109,142; Utility vehicles - 44,118; Taxi/Cars - 18,983; Trucks – 11,310; Sports Utility Vehicles – 4,045; Trailers – 1,265 and Buses – 758. Ayala Land Businessscapes: Redefining the concrete jungle
By Wilson Lee Flores
Sunday, September 21, 2008
How does Ayala Land help ensure better quality of life and leisure in burgeoning modern commercial and financial districts? Can we have world-class business enclaves without sacrificing the natural environment and lifestyle needs?
The Philippine STAR recently had an exclusive interview with Marivic Anonuevo, Ayala Land senior vice president and group head of Ayala Land Businessscapes, the group undertaking corporate headquarters projects like Tower One & Exchange Plaza and 6750 Ayala Avenue, also Technopod projects like Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) developments either as stand-alone buildings or its new campus-type developments such as that in UP Diliman.
Here are some excerpts:
THE PHILIPPINE STAR: Office buildings worldwide are often described negatively as “concrete jungles.” How are your Ayala Land Businessscapes projects trying to enhance the environment or quality of life and leisure of the people in your office buildings?
MARIVIC ANONUEVO: We understand the concerns of modern-day business people and professionals about the working and living environments of our modern cities. We consciously try to be different in design innovations and in the quality of our construction. We take bold steps to help recreate our cities, our office places and our workspaces.
We provide as much landscaping or green spaces in our buildings as we can. Here in Makati, we are developing our Solaris One building along De la Rosa Street, with a park beside it. For our campus developments like the UP-Ayala Land TechnoHub and the Nuvali BPO campus, our low-rise buildings are surrounded by lush greenery with water features and jogging paths. These provide opportunities for de-stressing and even encourage creativity among the employees. We want to offer not just efficiency, but also beauty and serenity.
We also ensure that dining establishments within our developments offer value meals and that they are conveniently located within our buildings or campuses. Whenever we can, we provide recreational facilities within our buildings such as basketball/ volleyball/badminton courts, spa, billiards and other facilities and amenities.
In what areas do we see Ayala Land actively redefining the business landscape?
Of course, we continue to develop first-class office buildings in the Makati CBD as this remains Ayala Land’s stronghold. We want to ensure the primacy of the country’s premier financial district.
In Bonifacio Global City and Nuvali, which are new townships master planned by Ayala Land, we are building new office buildings that will help catalyze fast economic development in these areas.
In Quezon City (Commonwealth Avenue area), Manila (San Lazaro area) and Cebu (Asiatown) — since these are strategic locations where there is an abundance of high-quality labor pool — we plan to build more BPO buildings.
In Baguio, we are building a low-rise BPO campus within Camp John Hay, while in Davao, our BPO building will form part of a mixed-use development that will include a mall and a hotel as well.
In all these developments, we aim to provide not only efficiently designed buildings but ideal work environments that promote productivity, dynamism and creativity amongst employees of our business partners.
What is the concept behind your “businessscapes” branding for the office buildings of Ayala Land?
The idea to brand the Corporate Business Group was born out of the opportunity to meet the growing demand of the office buildings, specifically the BPO market. Having a brand also differentiates us and our projects from other developers as we are able to leverage on the Ayala Land heritage. And of course, it reinforces Ayala Land’s position as the country’s only full-line real estate developer, covering residential, retail and office projects.
Makati has traditionally been the financial center and business hub of the Philippines ever since the Ayala Group developed it, what are your new office developments here and any other future plans?
We are committed to continuously uphold Makati as the Philippines’ premier financial center. We are about to complete our Solaris One building, which is part of a two-tower BPO complex along Dela Rosa Street in Makati. We are also nearing completion of the Glorietta 5 project, which consists of three retail floors and five office floors.
We likewise have plans for other new office buildings as part of mixed-use developments within the Ayala Center.
Tell us about the UP-Ayala Land Technohub, which I heard will be officially launched next month. What are the businesses there? How could entrepreneurs or other companies participate in this new project by transferring their offices here?
We are excited about this pioneering project, the country’s first full-scale campus-based science and technology park. The UP-Ayala Land TechnoHub is a campus development envisioned to serve as a venue for industry-academe collaboration. It consists of 10 office buildings (currently four have been completed, two by year-end, and four more by next year), which surround a central landscaped park with water features and jogging paths. It will include a support retail building, and possibly a hotel. It will also provide an incubation facility where start-up companies in science & technology (S&T) industries can hold offices. Ayala Foundation, Inc. will help manage them by providing “soft” services (HR, accounting, etc.) and linking them up with venture capitalists.
Companies that have started operations there include HSBC, IBM and Manulife Financial. Soon to open is Pointwest Technologies (a home-grown software development company) and several incubatee companies in S&T fields like robotics, software development, etc. In terms of employment, around 30,000 new jobs will be created by this project upon its full completion by end of next year.
* * *
Indeed, with Ayala Land taking the lead in creating new cities, new lifestyles and new environments, the country’s businesscape just got a whole lot brighter.

aside from the obrero side access, astig din ang setup ng public transport access along j.p. laurel av at basement parking ng ayala...
from this layout...

the red circles are the entrance/exit access to the basement area, while the blue line is the public transpo access, tunneling inside the building, kaya kahit uulan hindi mababasa ang mga loading/unloading passengers. )
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/ayala1.jpg
and also, sa 9.5 hectare business park, pansin nyo ba na mga 6 hectares ang ginamit na footprint for the mall and bpo buildings, ang laki nyan in fairness kaya sa tingin ko GLA nga ang released na size info, mga 3.5 hectares na lang ang natira for the hotel and condo components (slightly bigger than pryce business park, so highrises could still fit in, not bad).

Mindanao culinary fest opens this week
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
FOURTEEN courses and seminars on culinary will be conducted during the staging of the three-day Mindanao Culinary Festival (MCF) 2008 Summit, which will start on September 25 at the Venue in Davao City.
Among these courses and seminars are the certificate course on baking for both students and trainers; certificate course on cake decoration for both students and trainers; URC Baking Course; Barista course for beginners; and seminars on restaurant operations training; common pathogens and food safety; and other significant topics which will be presented by culinary specialists, chefs, and professors of culinary schools, and columnist and editor of a culinary magazine.
The conduct of seminars and culinary courses will also be held back to back with a culinary competition to be participated by students and trainers.
Aside from seminars and courses, the Mindanao Culinary Festival Summit will be highlighted by cooking demonstrations, valuable learning sessions, and trainings to be conducted by experts from Manila.
This year's MCF theme is "Indigenous Flavors, Global Tastes."
Mary Ann Montemayor of the Konkordans, the organizer of the event, earlier said the bigger challenge to the theme is learning how to position Mindanao's indigenous food in the global market.
She said Mindanao has so much to brag about in culinary terms. Last year, the event was able to elevate durian not just an ordinary fruit, but as main course, salad, and soup.
"We cannot promote destination without promoting our food. MCF is also a venue where we can encourage our SMEs to really continue to go into food business," Montemayor said.
MCF is initiated by the Davao Tourism Association (Data).

xzibit31 September 22nd, 2008, 10:31 AM 4.5 billion vs 10 billion? its 5.5 billion more!!! slap in our faces daw ito mga goys kc 4.5 billion daw and invest sa kanila at sa atin 3 billion lang. ...hmmmm... i am just laughing at this statement. 3 billion is for the mall only and not for the whole complex. the budget for the whole complex is 10 billion... would u know what i am talking about?
deadspyder September 22nd, 2008, 10:35 AM mga goys...slap on our faces daw ang pag lagay ng ayala mall in cdo kasi 4.5 billion daw ang investment ng ayala doon at sa atin 3 billion lang daw. hahahahaha...i am so happy for them....
but i would like to tell you TONZI yung 3 billion is for the mall only. actually the approved budget for davao is 10 billion to develop the business complex here. so ano na? 4.5 billion vs 10 billion?
alam mo TONZI, you should stop acting like this. dba d ito productive? it will just spark into an escalation of hostilities again. you are panning the flames again.
actually the same reason y i register here... naa ba na link na website??? to prove their claim??? or is it just a pigment of imagination??? a fabricated press release perhaps???i am not against anybody here... naka iskwela pud ko didto dapita sa ila city... i do have lots of relatives there...

actually, it's 6 billion for the BPO and Mall, initially it is 2.5 billion then came the oil crisis, 3 billion is set, then came the worst oil crisis... but ayala stood ground, 6 billion that is para kahit maging $160 pa ang oil tuloy pa rin, now with the lehman brothers brouhaha, it is safe i guess. :) the whole worth of davao ayala business park? do your math. i am happy for CDO if their mayor confirmed the business park and mall. as far as i know, 2005 or 2006 pa lang confirmed na ang mall and business park dyan eh. so it is just a matter of when. yung ayala davao naman first na rumor in 2006, na confirmed ng isang "government official" thru councilor peter lavina sometime in feb 2007 http://mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1830&Itemid=50, but na confirmed ng ayala mismo in december 2007 in their website disclosure.
@TONZI at bakit naman maging SLAP sa davao kung 50 billion pa ang mall dyan sa CDO, it is a slap to the ANTI progress people. at baka naman inisip nya na ang pag oppose natin sa ayala cdo thread last time for the sake of RIGHT INFORMATION at THE RIGHT PLACE at the RIGHT TIME as sign sa kanya na anti AYALA CDO tayo. well, hindi naman mga bobo nagbabasa dito sa SSC para paniwalaan ang kanyang flaming. kung ang cdo at davao ay parang mga MILF at gov't, hwag sana syang maging umbra kato para may peace naman.

Floirendo land okayed for reclassification
By Grace L. Plata
THE Davao City council, in a unanimous vote, approved the reclassification application of the Floirendo property in Bajada Tuesday to facilitate the construction of the Ayala Mall.
The 25 councilors present voted to allow the conversion of the property from low density residential zone to major commercial zone.
As it is, the land is almost vacant and has been that way for decades now, thus the low density residential zone classification.
The project was made a priority of the City Council, saying this would mean thousands of job opportunities for Dabawenyos.
The project's first two phases, which are the mall and office and call center facilities; and the recreational center with a firing range is estimated to cost P6 billion and will be finished by 2010 as per request of Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to the Ayala management.
The last two phases, which includes a hotel and a condominium project, may be finished by 2012.
Following the meeting of the Floirendo-Ayala representatives with the City Engineer's Office, Department of Public Works and Highways and Traffic Management Center, which was insisted on by the City Council, the application was good to go.
Floor Leader Danilo Dayanghirang said the next stop would be the discussion of the project construction itself with environment and energy concerns in the forefront.
http://sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/07/30/news/floirendo.land.okayed.for.reclassification.html
P6 billion budget for the first 2 phases is not bad at all. the remaining 2 phases for the hotel and condominium project would mean another billions from the ayala and floirendo's pocket.

* * *
Indeed, with Ayala Land taking the lead in creating new cities, new lifestyles and new environments, the country’s businesscape just got a whole lot brighter.

* * *
Indeed, with Ayala Land taking the lead in creating new cities, new lifestyles and new environments, the country’s businesscape just got a whole lot brighter.

MtApoStandard September 22nd, 2008, 01:54 PM Terminal makeover proposed
THE management of the Davao City Overland Transport Terminal is planning to refurbish the existing facilities of the terminal to increase revenues. Magno Adalin Jr., terminal officer-in-charge, said the first project is to renovate the area for stalls and stores, which presently occupy two rows inside the terminal.
He said there was a sponsorship negotiation between the terminal management and Coca-cola Bottlers Philippines Inc. last year but it did not push through because the company wanted that the terminal sell its products exclusively. “Mayor (Rodrigo Duterte) does not want it so the negotiations were stopped,” he added. The renovation of the stalls requires a P4 million budget and that the beverage company was ready to provide it, only that there was a disagreement during the negotiations, he said.
He said if the amount would soon be raised, the management is ready to implement the project. Adalin said they are targeting to maintain the income generation of the terminal at P1.5 million a month or P18 million in a year. This would give the terminal an income of P8 million because its regular operating expense is only P10 million. He said they only targeted to achieve P10.8 million by the end of the year but at the rate that they are going, he said they might reach the P14 million mark.
Last month, the terminal recorded a collection efficiency of 73.58 percent or an income of P1.68 million, higher than the P817, 230 income during the same period last year. The raise was attributed to the adjustments made with the implementation of the transport terminal ordinance or Ordinance No. 110 which was implemented last May. The implementation was opposed by some of the 160 stall and stand renters in the terminal saying that there was no consultation on their part on the 1,000 percent increase on their rental rates.
Adalin reasoned the ordinance had to be amended considering that the rates had remained the same since its passage in 1986 and that other terminals in the region collect higher rates. “We are for public service but we could do better if we have finance to have this stall developed,” he added. Adalin said he also wants to construct permanent sleeping bays for passengers in order to ensure the security of these people. At present, passengers who wait for bus trips sleep in the section between the bus bays and the stores.
He said the sleeping bay should have separate space for males and females and other amenities must be put in place such as rest and shower room and even a lounge where a television could be placed. Adalin said another requirement is that the bay should be secure and comfortable.

MtApoStandard September 22nd, 2008, 02:06 PM Yao sets deadline on SEAIR purchase
The Yao Group plans to invest between P3 billion to P4 billion for the refleeting and rebranding of the two airlines.
Asian Spirit is the country’s first and only cooperative airline that concentrates on least traveled routes while Seair is a charter airline company operating short routes since 1995.
The Yao group bought Asian Spirit from the Airline Employees Cooperative, which consists of 36 members.
Asian Spirit flies to tourist destinations and secondary and tertiary airports largely ignored by bigger airlines.
Asian Spirit became the Philippines’ fourth-flag carrier (after Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific and Air Philippines) in 2003. It has 10 aircraft, most of them specially designed for short take-off and landing.
It also flies to Sandakan, Malaysia three times weekly from Zamboanga and Palau, Micronesia, three times weekly from Cebu and every Wednesday from Davao. It flies to Seoul and Incheon in South Korea three times weekly from Kalibo, Laoag and Davao. full story (http://www.mb.com.ph/BSNS20080922135858.html)

Realty Boom in Davao fueled by influx of IT/BPO related Work
The Damosa Business Center, Anflocor’s pet project is nearly complete. It is situated right beside the existing IT Park in Lanang.
This upcoming commercial building was designed to house software development outfits, telecommunication providers, research & development firms. It will be inaugurated sometime in April 2008.
Around the city, more and more commercial and residential buildings are being built. While these constructions are not directly related to IT, they are matching the efforts of various sectors in promoting the city as an ideal IT investment destination.
Mr. Villaver said he welcomes these real estate projects, as well as the entry of other property developers that are targeting information technology services to provide the necessary jolt for the local economy and provide more work to Davao’s growing number of IT graduates.
In Addition, Blue-chip property developers like SM and Robinsons are actually eyeing Davao City as a possible area of funneling in investments and open economic zones focused towards IT and IT-enabled services.

Gov’t urged to pursue talks with Reds
By Jose G. Dalumpines Published : 2008-08-05
THE MINDANAO Business Council (MBC) urged the government to go back to the negotiating table with the National Democratic Front following the upsurge in atrocities and attacks by its armed wing, the New People’s Army in the Davao Region.
Ednar Dayanghirang, MBC executive director, said the resurgence of rebel atrocities will affect not only on the economic activities in Davao City but also the poor communities in the city’s hinterlands so the government should seriously consider pursuing the botched peace process with the communist rebels.
“Both the business sector and the poor populace are disturbed by the mulcting activities of the rebels whose demands range from financial support to economic provisions,” Dayanghirang said during the Kapehan sa Dabaw held at the Pizza Hut Restaurant in SM City.
He said the government also needs to realign its resources to benefit the poor communities and discourage the residents from supporting the rebel movement.
Dayanghirang cited the provinces of Compostela Valley and Davao Oriental where the mass base of the rebels is allegedly getting strong but he said these areas do not only need the presence of the military but also good governance from local government units.
At the same briefing, Bobby Teo, chief of the Davao City Investment and Promotion Center, downplayed the impact of the resurgence of the rebel activities to the business sector in the city. He said no companies have backed out due to the heightened NPA activities and more investments are even lined up for the rest of the year.
He cited the impending construction of the Robinson’s Supermarket in Buhangin District, the Ayala Center and the expansion of the SM mall at the Lanang Golf Course property.
Simeon Marfori II, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., said their organizations remained optimistic of the business climate in the city, which is marked by robust real estate activities.
Marfori said that though the NPA attacks could be indicative that times are getting harder, ordinary citizens no longer approve of the extreme measures the rebels are adopting.
He also urged the rebels to always consider the general welfare and to consider the effort of the government in addressing the economy. “The resurgence of the NPA attack is a pressing issue that affects business. We leave our full confidence on Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to address this problem in the best way he can,” Marfori said.

paulkrps September 22nd, 2008, 09:39 PM Davao inaugurates P81-M reservoir project
by Rose B Palacio
Davao City (18 July) -- The Davao City Water District (DCWD) is set to inaugurate today Friday (July 18) at about 8:30am the newest and newly completed 22,000 cubic meter Panorama twin reservoir in Buhangin, Davao City.
Costing Php81-million DCWD spokesperson and concurrent Finance Manager, Imelda Magsuci said that beside the existing one, another giant reservoir of DCWD will now serve the public in some parts of the poblacion area and northern parts of the city.
Construction started in 2005 and was completed on March 19, 2008. This will augment adequate potable water supply especially to residents living in the elevated and farflung areas of the northern part of the city.
In interview with local mediamen, Ms. Magsuci said OIC-Mayor Inday Sara Duterte was invited to grace the inauguration together with DCWD Manager Rodora N. Gamboa and other DCWD officials.
The giant reservoir is located on a hilltop beside Robinson's Highland in Buhangin.
At present, Magsuci said a relentless campaign has been going on to totally eliminate illegal tapping of water connections.
There are still individuals or groups making illegal water connections in the city, she said.
DCWD urged the public to be more vigilant in reporting to the water district of any illegal water connections, she further said. (PIA)

junax September 23rd, 2008, 04:50 AM ^^ Guys, let's focus on the developments of our city. The more Davao forumers react negatively to what's up and coming to theirs, the more Davao forumers become a laughing stock. The more Davao forumers try to discount their projects, the more CDO-Iligan forumers' negative perception towards us would be validated.
Reading the other thread, it's easy to find where the brawl started. It's not from somebody from CDO.
^^ yeah right. :) it's from UMBRA KATO.
any fresh news you've got bai TJ. a PM will do for rumors hehe.

Hmmmm.....ako ang nakatalk personally sa head ng Filinvest Mindanao. And that's what he told me bro. So Im just trusting on what he shared. Eto ang plan nila for that newly acquired lot sa may redemptorist. But then again, plans are subject to change. So it's up to FLI tlga if they would push through with the project or not and if how many floors these buildings would have.

oo nga, sana wag mangyari ang mga ito sa u/c sa Davao...andaming mga abandoned bldg sa MM na naubusan ng funds...or ung iba, from posh condos, downgraded to low-cost apartments na lang para matapos lang ung structure, ung exterior and interior decorations and finishings eh hindi na ginandahan.
dinabaw September 23rd, 2008, 05:59 AM ^^ oo nga , anyway here's why Davao is above the rest....
Why we are proud of DAVAO CITY?
The 2007 study of Asian Institute of Management (AIM) Policy Center, covering 90 cities showed Davao City as number one on the survey of most competitive place to live and operate a business. Lapu-lapu, Makati, Manila, Marikina, and Quezon were next competitive cities, respectively.
The evaluation was not only due to qualitative analysis but also of quantitative indicators like cost of electricity, water rates, cost of doing business, and crime solution efficiencies.
Speaking of electricity, Meralco charges P10/KWh, DAVAO LIGHT charges only P6.44/KWH, VECO charges P6.92/KWh, Pampanga P7.63/KWh. Meralco is overcharging by P2 to P3 per KWh, despite all of them paying the same taxes.
The situational analysis that Davao City is blessed to have one of the best tasting water in the world. In terms of quality, it is next to Netherlands. It is also abundant with Mount Apo as its recharge point. A study shows there is a giant aquifer covering large areas from Calinan to Dumoy and Toril. Water is one of the major assets of Davao City in terms of luring more investors.
While other major Philippine cities are either suffering from water source insufficiency, poor quality, salt water and high processing cost, Davao City enjoys an abundant ground water source and quality equaling or even exceeding around 74,088.637 liters/day.
One of the most serious problem is the incidence of frequent recurrence of flash floods
brought about by rapid urbanization. The city is cognizant of the flooding problem, thus measures are now embarked. Major drainage and laterals in the Poblacion area are built and
other canals improved. There are three (3) major areas considered:
1) In the south, the areas covering Toril district along the alignment of Marapangi creek,
Lipadas River and portions of Tugbok and Calinan district, with an approximate are of
12,854 hectares.
2) Along the alignment of Talomo River covering the areas of Matina Pangi, Matina Aplaya,
Langub, Magtuod, Maa and Talomo Proper with an area of about 12,857 hectares.
3) Along the alignment of Davao River covering the areas of Poblacion, Agdao, Buhanging,
Tigatto, Pampanga, Sasa and Panacan up to the alignment of Lasang river in the north,
with an area of about 9,398 hectares.
The rapid population growth WAS already anticipated by the city planners. There was a proposed transportation route system, the plan seeks to establish on a long term basis, a mass transport system including LRT system for the city to ensure efficiency of circulation and minimize maintenance cost of roads. The plan shows efficient linkages among the identified zones of the city as well as flow of people, goods and services in the citys outlying barangays. Soon to happen.
Carrying out the Comprehensive Development Plan of the city is now being reviewed, including the Zoning Ordinance.
Admirable indeed, Mayor Duterte’s vision is to make Davao City livable for the present and future generations to come. The City government consistently pursued a policy geared towards the optimal utilization and development of its finite human as well as natural resources, within the context of balanced ecology, empowered citizenry, and the emerging circumstances surrounding the City’s Role in the Asia Pacific Region more particularly in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA), as a major investment center.
Long Live Davao City! Viva Davao City!
i dunno it's just me, pero i always want to live in a place w/ abundant water

Published : 2008-09-22
THE Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines (SCOOP) Davao Inc., Open Water Kayak Competition, in cooperation with the Edge Outdoor Specialist for novice and expert paddlers has been moved to November at the Bonguyan Beach Resort to give the organizers ample time to prepare for the event. SCOOP Davao president and Mirror Sports Editor Leonard Paul Palo, vice president Jimmy Javier and Rey Sumagaysay of the E-ORG cited that in light of their very hectic schedules this month and the passing of one of their colleagues, photographer Rudy Tolentino, they had decided to move the event this November at a new venue. “The competition was initially planned at the Bago Beach but to make it more accessible to the participants we have decided to have it in Bonguyan,” Palo said. The one-day competition will have individual and tandem events using Feel Free Recreational Kayaks for both expert and novice paddlers. Cash prizes and other items will be ups for grabs for the winners and the participants.

Dazzling Davao

Considered as the window to the island of Mindanao, Davao City is home to various national prides. The alluring orchid called the waling-waling and the intriguing endangered Philippine Eagle, whose sanctuary is at the foot of Mt. Apo, the country’s highest mountain, are among the tourist attractions in this bounteous province. No wonder my friends and I opted for an adventure trip to Davao City, one of the world’s largest cities.
Davao City is located in Davao del Sur, Mindanao. It is accessible by land, air, and sea from major points in the country. This well-known tourist destination is only 90 minutes away from Manila by plane. We arrived at the modern Davao International Airport around 6:30 a.m. Bambie, our tour guide, gladly welcomed us to this bustling city.
Our first taste of Davao’s gastronomic delights was at Dencia’s. This popular restaurant, just across the JSGaisano mall side entrance, serves breakfast bestsellers like lugaw (congee) and tokwa’t baboy (tofu and pork meat).
After our yummy breakfast, we stopped over at the lovely and well-maintained People’s Park. This four-hectare park has a 425-square meter visitors’ center built with a durian dome design and an open plaza with a walk-through rainbow drive featuring some collections of potted palms. What I found fascinating were the lumad sculptures of Mindanaoan artist Kublai Millan. Wide-eyed, big-cheeked sculptures of natives are portrayed in different scenes like farming, harvesting, playing, and sweeping. An estimated 1,101 species of plants and trees from rainforests worldwide can also be found here. Not surprisingly, it has become a city landmark where city dwellers enjoy hanging around.
Natural attractions abound in this city. The Crocodile Park and Butterfly House are both situated in the Riverfront Complex in Ma-a. We first explored the Crocodile Park that houses the country’s biggest crocodile named Pangil. There is also a mini-zoo that allows visitors to have close encounters with various animals. It was quite an experience wrapping an albino python around my neck. Just a stone’s throw away is the lush Butterfly House that is home to beautiful and colorful butterflies. It is a must-see attraction.
To recharge ourselves after a hectic morning, we headed to our hotel, Waterfront Insular.
This first-class business resort hotel has cozy open-air corridors perfect for sightseeing. The rooms are tastefully furnished with neat bathrooms providing us a comfortable stay.
Food tripping was one of the highlights of our trip. We sampled different dishes like chorizo, chopsuey, sizzling sisig, sizzling boneless bangus, and tuna belly at the scenic River Walk Grill. We were even tempted to try the exotic crocodile meat. It would have been an extraordinary dining experience, but it was out of stock that time. Of course, we didn’t miss the chance to taste the mouthwatering durian shake and mango float.
After lunch, we heard mass at the nearby St. Joseph the Worker Parish. From there, we strolled around Gaisano Mall, the biggest mall in Mindanao, along J.P. Laurel Avenue, Bajada. We then took our dinner at Gerry’s Grill.
Davao at night
For a night of fun and entertainment, we checked out a comedy bar, Joke Hall. The performers kept us laughing until the wee hours. My friends even had the chance to belt out some songs onstage.
It was a drizzly Sunday morning, but we still explored the hotel’s amenities. The swimming pool and adjacent beach offer a soothing atmosphere to guests. We had a delectable breakfast buffet at Café Uno. The restaurant serves mostly international cuisine that will surely satisfy your appetite.
We boarded a van, and after an hour’s drive, we arrived at the idyllic and sprawling Malagos Garden Resort. This 12-hectare art and nature theme park is a top-notch tourist spot. Known for its wildlife farm hosting butterflies, indigenous birds, and other wildlife species, and famed orchids, tropical plants, and fruit trees, this attraction is both educational and entertaining. Though we didn’t catch the much-talked about bird show, we had the opportunity to interact with the birds and other animals. Afterwards, we had a leisurely walk through the verdant Waling-Waling Forest. It was a breath of fresh air from city life’s hurly-burly.
After our nature adventure, our guide took us to Golden Egg Ihaw-Ihaw. It is a roadside resto near Mintal. Our Davao food trip wouldn’t be complete without trying the hito (catfish), a popular delicacy. Aside from that, we ordered other home-cooked meals like tilapia, native chicken, adobo, and tinola. Adding fun was the videoke right in front of us. Eating combined with singing was extremely enjoyable!
We had a quick stopover at one of the fruit stands to buy suha (pomelo) for pasalubong. We then visited the famous Lola Abon’s Durian Candy factory. It is a small house that sells high-quality durian candies. It was a treat choosing from a wide range of products like mangosteen stick bag, langka yema, durian ice cream, langka candy, and durian choco. We all left the store with bagfuls of goodies.
It is true that one simply does not get bored in Davao City. A 10-minute boat ride will allow you to bask in nature’s splendor at Paradise Island Park and Beach Resort, one of the most visited resorts on Samal Island. The resort teems with robust talisay trees, white sand, clear waters, and scenic mountains.
We rented four cottages for our overnight stay. The air-conditioned cottages have native thatched roof, amakan walls, and private verandas. I really adored the room’s indigenous interiors. The resort offers various activities like island hopping, swimming, kayaking, and trekking for fun-loving guests.
Davao
In the evening, we dined al fresco while savoring the cool sea breeze and romantic music by the serenaders. The food was good, but the service was slow. So, better order ahead of time.
The following day, we went swimming and snorkeling at the beach. I found it totally refreshing to just do things at our own pace. Indeed, it was a great opportunity to pamper ourselves amid lovely surroundings.
From the resort, we embarked on another road trip to Malagos watershed. This is one of the city’s main watersheds managed by Davao City Water District. Various groups have been actively involved in protecting and preserving the watershed as part of the government’s nationwide campaign to conserve and protect the environment. We walked around the vast and well-kept forest for some photo ops.
For adventure seekers like me, don’t just imagine, make it happen. Escape to Davao’s best-kept secrets and experience a rejuvenating holiday
getaway.

SUV111 September 23rd, 2008, 12:51 PM Lower rent makes provincial cities attractive to call centers09/19/2008 | 04:52 PM
MANILA, Philippines - Business process outsourcing (BPO) companies that plan to put up new offices remain attracted to locations outside Metro Manila due to lower rental costs, an international property consultant noted recently.
But an official of CB Richard Ellis also noted that these BPOs are also looking to tap the human resource pool in other urban centers.
Speaking at an international services conference recently, CBRE Philippines Vice Chairman Joey Radovan said the outlook for the cities of Bacolod, Cebu, Davao, Pampanga, and Naga are promising.
Prospects for so-called Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities in the next two years are also promising.
“BPO companies that have been in the country for three to four years are looking at the provinces to leverage the large labor pools in these areas and to leverage the benefits of lower rates for office space and operating costs," said Radovan.
For this year alone, Radovan said 23 of the 34 projects scheduled for completion by the end of 2008 are located outside the Makati and Ortigas central business districts where many of the BPOs are currently located.
Lease rates in the Makati and Ortigas CBDs range from P850 to P950 per square meter, said Radovan while rates in Cebu range from P330 to P450 per square meter, and Bacolod from P220 to P250 per square meter.
Makati and Ortigas CBDs are what CBRE refers to as Tier 1 cities. These cities are equipped with adequate infrastructure, such as telecommunications, roads, accommodations.
Tier 2 and 3 locations such as Laoag, Tacloban, Tagbilaran, Tuguegarao, Kalibo, Legaspi, Roxas, Butuan, Puerto Princesa, Dipolog, Cotabato, and General Santos City further south will benefit from expansion of the offshoring and outsourcing (O&O) industry, added Radovan.
Prospects for the O&O industry are not yet dimming totally despite the current financial crisis among top banks in the United States.
Rainerio M. Borja, president of US-headquartered PeopleSupport Philippines, told GMANews on Thursday that while the current US crisis will have an impact on some BPOs in the country, the local industry might also consider the crisis as an opportunity.
A number of US companies may consider offshoring some of their requirements to the Philippines, he explained, owing to the subprime crisis.
Borja said nevertheless that the situation will eventually stabilize.
Karen Batungbacal, president of ICT Group, said in an industry forum on Thursday that it is up to the local BPOs to grab these business opportunities at a time of crisis in the US.
Radovan said these alternate sites are giving BPOs more choices in office spaces. - Veronica C. Silva, GMANews.TV

Today was the ground-breaking of the 10 hectare property where ALI and Anflocor is building a mall, and BPO buildings in a property development project called Abreeza. Of course I am more excited with the mall, than the BPO. I was there during the press conference and I am excited to share that Robinsons will be anchor store of Abreeza.
I am crossing my fingers that Abreeza will be as great and homey as Serendra and Greenbelt. :) An Ayala executive kept on emphasizing that Abreeza will not just be a functional mall, but an experiential one. It won’t open until the last quarter of 2010 but I AM SUPER EXCITED already!
