With barely three months to go, the Davao Archdiocesan Youth Coordinating Apostolate (DAYCA) is now in the "orientation stage' for the National Youth Day (NYD) 2006 this coming November.
The archdiocese of Davao will be this year's host for the NYD which is expected to converge more than ten thousand youths coming from different dioceses and archdioceses in the country.
Cheryl A. Vilog, NYD-Media Relations and Promotions 2006 chair said that they are expecting a massive participation from the youth considering that it falls on the semestral break.
Today (July 2) the Media Relations and Promotions conducted a Committee orientation at the Holy Cross of Davao College (HCDC) Masscom Center regarding the upcoming events for the NYD.
The afternoon is intended for Team Building Activities.
Vilog said that to accomodate the participating youths for the 2006 NYD, participants will be housed at their foster parents place.
Although not yet final, DAYCA is contemplating on using the PTA Grounds as the Youth City for the NYD '06.
Some known personalities from the academe, religious and politics will also visit the city for the NYD '06.

regarding the PS plan? well that u/c building is for recruitment and training. confirmed na na! if plans for a callcenter facility will go through, they would have to acquire a new building for the callcenter facility i guess. the uc building is quite small.
It aint impossible kc sa Manila, PS got 3 buildings before (Export Bank, JG Summit, Philamlife Tower), before the PS Center was constructed.
In Cebu, PS have E-Office Bay One and E-Office Bay Two. Plus additional floors in SkyRise IT Building. :)

Tumble Tots is one of Jojie's businesses.....
anyway speaking Jojie Bian Ilagan...another outstanding Dabawenyo, here's an article about her posted in Manila Times.
Joji Ilagan-Bian’s resume is not only impressive; it’s unsettling. For those who complain that there are simply not enough hours in a day, Joji’s life reads like she was simply blessed with more hours than the rest of us. How else can one successfully head several organizations and manage a preschool, a tourism school, and a family all at once?
But any fool knows that it isn’t the hours. It’s the delicate, often symbiotic, combination of passion and purpose that makes a Joji Ilagan-Bian, as much as it does a Richard Branson or a Mahatma Gandhi. If this key to success seems easy, it probably isn’t. How many people live with genuine passion and purpose? And how many lead uninspired and aimless lives, despite the new car and the condo in Rockwell? If the condition of this consumption-obsessed world is any indication, there must be millions upon millions who fall under the latter. Joji, clearly, is not one of them. “Basically, I am a simple person. Cheap lang ako. I find delight and inspiration in little things. I am heartened when I see people go beyond their “shell and comfort zones” to do their little share in improving the lives of others,” Joji says.
And that’s exactly what she does. “I have always been passionate about bringing in new developments and new things for Mindanao—Davao City in particular,” Joji states. This explains her extensive involvement in organizations that promote the socio*economic welfare of Mindanao, which includes holding leadership positions in the Mindanao Business Council, the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and industry, the East Asean Business Council, the Davao City investment Promotions Board, the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc., the Mindanao TVET Association, the Mindanao Commission of Women, the National Corn Board, the Philippine Skills Foundation and the Philippine Australia Business Council. As if that wasn’t enough, Joji is also an active member of several other business and civic organizations.
This same passion to improve lives has led her to found the first tourism technical-vocational school in Mindanao and the Visayas, the Joji Ilagan Foundation College of Business and Tourism. This school is set to be the Regional Tourism Center for BIMP-EAGA and is the only vocational-technical hotel management school in the Philippines affiliated with the Educational Institute of American Hotel and Motel Associations and is an accredited training institution in the Dual-Training Program of the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).
Joji is proud that her tourism school is easily differentiated from other schools by its attention to the actual development of the person rather than merely equipping the student with “skills.” “We go beyond the usual and traditional academics’ by incorporating the ‘personal development’ component in our course offerings. This instills a higher level of confidence in our students—the rest will just follow,” Joji explains.
Her unwavering belief in this inside-out approach has its roots in a childhood only nurturing parents can provide to children—something not everybody is particularly blessed with. “I have beautiful memories of my childhood,” Joji gushes. “My Dad would pick me up from school every Friday, bring me to the bookstore, and let me buy all the books I want. My Mom, who was my best friend, was always there to listen as I blabbered about my dreams and what I wanted to become. Because of my parents, I grew up to be a confident person with a positive outlook.”
She asserts, “I realized that honing the self-esteem must start as early as possible. This will enable the child to relate better to his environment and his peers.”
Thus began her search in the late nineties for a tool program that would insure that a child develops confidence and self-esteem at the earliest stage possible. She found such a program in Tumble Tots, an international UK-based preschool with over 5,000 schools worldwide.
“Tumble Tots is a unique preschool program that encourages and values the participation of the parents in the growth and development of their children. It also provides children with a safe and loving environment that encourages them to go out of their shell and try new things,” Joji says. “Timid children are transformed in front of our eyes into confident and independent persons who live life to the fullest. It is rewarding to see both parents and child have an enjoyable experience at our center. As we help children develop their motor skills, early communication skills, and positive personality traits; they sparkle; and their parents see what a positive difference Tumble Tots is making in their lives.” Tumble Tots is located at ground floor, Technoplaza 1, Eastwood City Cyberpark, Libis, Queazon City.
“My business instincts are supported by a viable business plan,” she notes. Suddenly, the warm, motherly Joji takes a backseat to her alter ego, the shrewd entrepreneur. “I study the environment and have always believed in niche marketing. It’s useless to be a jack-of-all-trades. You will eventually end up with no market at all. I remain focused on the needs of our niche market. I always make sure that we are different from our competitors—that we strive to be better then them,” Joji confidently explains.
To stay ahead of the competition, Joji instructs her employees to be sensitive to the environment. “I always tell my people to keep ears open to the suggestions and comments of all clients, whether they be students, parents, or industry partners, and to keep me informed always,” she says. “Competitions is a challenge and it’s healthy. It keeps us motivated to do better.”
As a boss, Joji fosters her employees’ love for the company by engendering a shared sense of responsibility for the company’s fate. “I always tell my people to treat the business as if it’s their own; that they are not mere employees, but stakeholders. If the business makes good, we all share the bounty. I always emphasize the importance of loyalty to the company,” she says. This seems to have produced good results. “The employees deal with out clients well and many of my key people have been with me for over ten years,” Joji shares proudly. Her secret? Trusting her people with the work. “I am very good at delegating work. In a way, it develops the professional competence of my employees and gives them a sense of well being, too.”
Such remarkable achievements have not gone unnoticed in the Philippines. In 1997 she was awarded with the Datu Bago Award in Business and Education and the Kabalikat Laang Bisig Presidential National Award. Her profile has also been featured in such widely read publications as Asiaweek, Asia Traveler’s Magazine and the Singapore Strait Times.
No doubt, Joji has made her mark not only in Filipino society, but on humanity itself for her tireless efforts to uplift the human condition, whether through business or education. It comes as no surprise then that this “simple person” should find so much success, achievement and happiness in life. Driven by passion, fueled by purpose, the likes of Joji Ilagan-Bian is exactly what the Philippines—no, the world—needs more of.

6% increase in hotel occupancy in Davao City noted
July 4, 2006
PIA
Davao City (4 July) -- Hotels in Davao City realized a six percent increase in the growth rate of hotel occupancy, an indicator that the industry is making good this year.
Marie Jovie P. Ay-ad, president of Hotel Sales and Maketing Association of Davao and member of the organizing committee for the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTEE) noted that the growth is due to the increase of arrivals of visitors from foreign market.
She said before with the ratio of 90 percent for domestic arrivals and ten foreigners, recent market share was changed to 75 domestic while foreign tourists at 25 percent.
Ay-ad who is also from Grand Regal Hotel said that in the hotel that she represents where they target their sales at P8.3 million monthly, now they could go up to P12 million in actual sales which she said is true to all other big hotels in the city ..
She said the hotels nowadays no longer do hard selling and the “cockroach competition” has been lessen.
“Noon kasi ang mga hotels dive to the lowest rate para lang makakuha ng client,” she said.
“I think this is also the result of the holding of the Asean Tourism Forum here where Davao was highly promoted as a must visit destination where there are five big hotels and another big three resorts,” she said.
She said the holding of the MTTE here in Davao will again boost the tourism industry.
Marissa Te Eng Fo, organizer of MTTE who is also from the travel and tour promotion said there will be 45 entities joining the expo that will be held at SM City Davao on August 11 to 13, 2006.
She said MTTE is an event that will showcase the Davao/Mindanao inbound destinations where new tour packages are offered. It will also generate awareness among probable markets of the services being offered by travel agencies of inbound and outbound travel packages.
Among the key players of the MTTE are Davao Travel Agencies Association, Davao Tour Operators, Non-Iata Travel Agencies, Department of Tourism and the Philippine Tour Operators Association.

Koreans dominate foreign tourists who visit RP
July 4, 2006
PIA
Davao City (4 July) -- There is now a shift on the nationality of the most frequent visitors coming to the Philippines.
Department of Tourism (DOT XI) assistant regional director Roger Layson in an interview said the Koreans dominated the foreign tourists that visit the Philippines from Japanese visitors.
Although in Davao he said the Japanese are still the number one in tourists arrivals here.
However, he said the number of Koreans visitors are fast increasing and ranked third in tourists arrivals in Davao.
He said that five years ago the Koreans ranked 10th among the foreign visitors who frequented Southern Mindanao but now they are in number three.
He attributed the increase in the travels of Korean in Southern Mindanao to their desire to explore new Asean destinations and that includes Davao.
“This is also manifested by the growing market in Davao on the mushrooming of Korean restaurants and stores that cater to the Korean nationals,” he said.
Layson said the growth is fast and Koreans come mainly for leisure and they are noted as big spenders.
He said they go for something exotic and love golf and don’t miss the night-life of their chosen destination.
The Koreans, he said come as groups or travel alone because they now are able to communicate well through the English language.
Meanwhile Layson is optimistic that five years from now the landscape of the tourism field in this region will be changed as the tourism industry continues to grow.
“Davao has become a vibrant destination and the market really is growing,” he said.
He projected a 15 percent growth in tourists arrivals annually even as he said that Davao has a plus factor being the hub of island in Mindanao.
Layson also pointed out that Davao offers several options to tourists either they be in their 50s or above or those young generation where the island has the island to highland destinations.

DOT pushes “homestay” program
July 4, 2006
PIA
Davao City (4 July) -- The Department of Tourism is strengthening its Homestay Program launched 10 years ago in the region to boost local tourism most especially in the small towns of the region.
As observed, there are plenty of tourist destinations hidden at the corners of the Davao provinces especially in Davao Oriental. However, tourists seemed to have been hesitant to spend a couple of days due to the lack of accommodation facilities offered in those areas.
“This is one big problem of the local tourist destinations. They cannot go full blast with their promotions because they lack the necessary requirement of tourists which is decent accommodation.”, DOT XI Roger Layson said. During the Kapihan sa Dabaw yesterday.
This, according to him, has pushed the DOT to revive the homestay program of the said office to help local tourism lure more tourists by providing them an alternative for hotels and convention buildings.
The Homestay Program empowers local residents in a particular area to develop whatever existing facilities they have in their homes that would entice visitors to stay there instead of looking for hotels or convention centers.
Practiced in Boracay, the DOT XI is planning to encourage more homeowners especially those living near tourist spots in the region to engage in this particular business.
“ Our office provides the trainings and seminars that would teach homeowners how to accommodate visitors and for them to give a warm welcome to the tourists during their visit.”, Layson explained.
The DOT has seen the program as a tourism promotion tool and at the same time a business opportunity for the local folks as well.
Layson urged everyone to maximize whatever potential a certain destination could offer to the locals and to the visitors as well.
Hotel owners in Davao city admitted that hotel rooms are constantly booked or if not over-booked which is why the DOT is pushed to look for other ways on how to maintain and increase the number of visitors without having to threaten them by the lack of hotel rooms.
The second most often used option by the travel and tours operators is offering the accommodation at the Island Garden City of Samal.
Waterfront Insular Hotel Manager Lenny Palacio bared that IGACOS is often the catch basin of visitors that can no longer be accommodated in Davao city.
“Aside from its popular beaches and adventure packages, Samal is just a 15-minute ride from Davao which is not a hassle to any visitor,” she said.
At present, small towns are already engaging into such homestay program. The bonsai capital San Isidro of Davao Oriental could cater adventure-loving tourists with ten homes available for homestay while the Davao Oriental coco capital Mati has more homes ready to accept visitors.

National Youth Day to be held in Davao
From: Davao Catholic Herald
Date: July 2-8 2006
Although not yet final, DAYCA is contemplating on using the PTA Grounds as the Youth City for the NYD '06.

davaoeagle July 3rd, 2006, 07:17 PM FREEZE: 183 Cafe and Bar, Party all the time
By H. O. Castillo Published : 2006-07-03
Being with old friends and meeting new ones while drinking, dining, or dancing at 183 Café and Bar can be just as exciting as watching the Pacquiao-Larios boxing match. A lot of “oohs” and “aahs” from the party people puncture the air filled with boom-boom hip-hop and house music all through the night. The waiters move with precision like a SWAT team in dark blue shirts and black pants as they weave quickly through the gyrating crowd taking orders and delivering food and drinks left and right.
Wild FM’s DJ Gary seems like Freddie Roach with a game plan who knows the perfect timing when to work up the crowd with super hot music – with a little help from DJ Ed of Monster Radio on the m-i-c. Strangely, the party people could turn into songwriters of sort as they chant new naughty lyrics whenever “Superstar” and “My Humps” get played. Too naughty to print, though (naughtier than what the crowd used to chant when “Funkytown” was played in the old Mad Max Disco nights).
Teeming with life every night (except Sundays), 183 Café and Bar is located at Rizal Promenade, Rizal Street, Davao City. It’s where the cool party people party.

HAZE blanketed the vast expanse of Beijing, the capital of what was once an isolationist nation. Not even the legendary Great Wall of China can be seen from what looks like thick smog even as the fully-booked Philippine Airlines started its descent to Beijing International Airport.
At about 9,000 feet checkered farmlands became visible. A few seconds more and the blue and gray rooftops of what seemed like factory buildings came into view. And as quickly as the plane descends rows of high rise buildings, some under construction, materialize and are swiftly lost again from sight as the plane touched down. This city, which was the center of a radical cultural revolution and shunned the modernism of the western world cannot possibly transmogrify into a modern metropolis. But, as the plane comes closer to ground, the stunning grandeur of contemporary Beijing reveals an awesome and incredible progress and development that belie its past. But the azure skies of Beijing seemed to be lost in the haze that refuse to settle. One wonders where have the farmers gone.
Davao City, a new tourist destination
There is no hassle in the immigration and customs at the Beijing International Airport. Hundreds of tourists from all over the world are flocking here. Young Legislators of the Philippines arrived earlier.
But the more transparent are the members of the Tour Operators of Davao who flew in on a familiarization trip and to support in full-force the Davao City Government special presentation during the Department of Tourism Conference, which was to be held a day prior to the Beijing International Tourism Expo 2006.
Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Ace Durano flew in to head the inaugurals. He was surprised to see a big delegation from Davao City, which was the centerpiece of the DOT presentation during the forum held at the Marco Polo Hotel Beijing.
Davao City's Chief Legal Officer, Melchor Quitain, represented City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte after which Davao City Investment and Promotions Center head Roberto Teo made a comprehensive presentation of the investment climate and potentials in Davao City. Secretary Durano dubbed Davao as the new destination for tourists from China.
Davao tour operators in Beijing
In the media conference that followed, Teo and Quitain, gave a briefing on the City tourism industry with special focus on the coming Kadayawan festivities in August.
While the duo made an excellent job, a little help from and physical presence of DOT Regional and City Tourism Officials would have been a perfect combination. However the tour operators of Davao City, headed by Wanda Teo of Mt. Apo Travel, and Philippine Airlines more than filled the gap.
The group came prepared with brochures, posters, and CDs depicting the prime tourist destinations in the region. With Wanda are Lito and Carmen Tan of CM Tan Travel, Larry Pasquil of Pan Asia World Holidays, Susan Escora of AME Travel, Dolly Marquez of New World Travel, Juvy Querencia of House of Travel, Stephen Tan of Frontier Travel, Marilyn and Perfecto Domingo of Madayaw Travel and Ely Ramchand of Great Vacation.
Lending their unflinching support to the tour operators and the City Government presenters are Juanito Loyola, President of Harvester, Santos Land Development Corp. Chairman Antonio Domingo, businesswoman Bing Jumamil, Davao City PAL Central Ticketing Office Manager Tita Manabat, PAL Butuan City Manager Abelardo Plaza, and Philamlife Vice President for Mindanao Jay Ledesma.
Beijing Int’l Tourism Expo
The Philippines has the choice spot in the venue of the Beijing International Tourism Exposition. As guests enter the exhibit area, they are greeted by stunning and statuesque models in contemporary Filipiniana costumes executed by Rene Salud.
"The CDs, brochures and posters that we brought were all gobbled up. We did not expect the participants and guests to be this many", Wanda said. "This is a learning process for us and I think of the City government. This is the first time that we participated in a tourism expo of this magnitude.
Next time we should make it a must for the tour, resorts and hotel operators, local government and the regional tourism office and airline companies to putour acts together so that we can come up with a package of tourism information materials along with cultural presentations if we can afford one", Wanda said.
Beijing today
Beijing is in a frenzy of constructions. What you read and heard and expectations of tenement houses before and after the cultural revolution are no longer there.
Except for the Tiananmen Square and the well-preserve temples, palaces and mystical gardens and edifices built by the ruling dynasties of yore, including the amazing Great Wall of China, the remnants of the past regimes are being demolished and have given way to massive high rise condominiums and corporate offices, eight-lane express avenues and skyways that traverse the vastness of Beijing.

Absolutely no mining in Hamiguitan: mines bureau
THE regional office of the Mines and Geosciences Bureau in Davao Region denied reports that mining activities are being conducted within the Hamiguitan Wildlife Sanctuary in San Isidro, Davao Oriental.
"There is absolutely no mining within the sanctuary, as opposed to what has been perpetuated by some severely misinformed groups," mines bureau regional director Edilberto Arreza said.
Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo
Arreza said that while some areas east of the Hamiguitan Range are covered by Mineral Production and Sharing Agreements (MPSA), the sanctuary is clearly protected by a 250-meter buffer zone along all sides.
"The distance is greater than what has been provided for in our laws regarding ecological balance and environmental protection," he said.
Mt. Hamiguitan was declared a wildlife sanctuary in September 2004, three months after the MPSA for Blue Ridge Mining Company was approved.
After such declaration, Arreza said, mining companies with claims in the vicinity of the sanctuary voluntarily relinquished portions of their approved claim areas.
"This resulted to the reduction of their claims by at least 2,700 hectares. Moreover, these mining companies are still in the exploration stage, meaning, the activities they are currently undertaking are limited to collecting fist-sized rock samples and small bags of stream sediments, as well as test pitting that in no way alter or disturb the natural character of the explored areas. We must also emphasize that these exploration works are done outside of Mt. Hamiguitan," Arreza said.
Anti-mining groups have recently demanded for the cancellation of MPSAs in areas near Hamiguitan and within the jurisdiction of the capital town Mati in Davao Oriental.

davaoeagle July 3rd, 2006, 07:32 PM Eaga, Australia to ease non-tariff trade barriers
THINGS are looking up inside the emerging partnership between the Northern Territory, Australia and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-the Philippines-East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-Eaga), with key leaders agreeing to address non-tariff trade barriers to open up trade, tourism and investment exchange between the sub-region and the Australian market.
This move is seen as breakthrough in attempts to ease up issues on non-tariff trade barriers, as a recent dialogue between government officials and business leaders in the BIMP-Eaga and the Northern Territory yielded a shared recognition that tremendous opportunities for trade, especially in agricultural products, food commodities and construction materials are abound in the area.
In a joint communiqué forged at the 2nd BIMP-Eaga-Darwin Dialogue held recently in Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, BIMP-Eaga member countries, the Northern Territory Government and the BIMP-Eaga Business Council (BEBC) agreed to maximize trade opportunities between the sub-region and Australia by addressing concerns on non-tariff-trade barriers.
Specifically, they agreed to explore ways to simplify and share information on customs-immigration-quarantine and security (CIQS) related rules and regulations as well as provide capacity-building assistance for BIMP-Eaga quarantine officials.
Merly Cruz, regional director of the Department of Trade and Industry Southern Mindanao and Philippine senior official for BIMP-Eaga, said the agreement forged in the dialogue augurs well for the sub-region as it offers great opportunity to link up and access the more developed Australian market.
"NT players are interested to tap the East Asia or Asia as a market because they feel they are now ready with AustralAsia railway in place. It is now positioning its products to Asia, particularly BIMP-Eaga and versa and that it can very well serve as the gateway," said Cruz.
She added the recent completion of AustralAsia trade route is viewed to further increase trade advantages between BIMP-Eaga, NT and the rest of Australia.
An initiative, under the Northern Territory Government's Asian Engagement Plan, AustralAsia Trade Route, pushes the creation of a new rail system linking Northern and Southern Australia via BIMP-Eaga and a nautical super highway linking Australia with the Philippines' Strong Republic Nautical Highway.
The plan supports a strategic objective of increased trade and investment through multilateral relationships in Asia particularly the BIMP-Eaga region.
Under the AustralAsia Trade Route initiative, the sub-region can link up with Australia's import and exports, shipping, value adding services and take advantage of its ongoing regional development projects on rail, road, energy and communication systems.
Cruz also said that hopes are high to bring more BIMP-Eaga products to Australia, as an ad-hoc technical committee shall be formed to discuss specific mechanisms in putting up fumigation facilities in the sub-region.
"This is a good indicator of a flourishing BIMP-Eaga, NT trade relationships and it would be very important to Mindanao because we have been attempting to bring out products to Australia such as our fresh fruits. We have succeeded a bit but its far from significant," she added.
At present, efforts are still being pushed for Philippine mango, pineapple and banana to gain greater market access in Australia.
The 2nd BIMP-Eaga-Darwin Dialogue was attended by representatives from key private sector organizations in Eaga, such as the BEBC, BIMP-Eaga Facilitation Center (BIMP-FC), as well as the Asian Development Bank, Asean Secretariat, German Technical Cooperation, and officials from Northern Territory (NT) and AusAid.

BTW, I was requested by Jinwan Media Group of Beijing to write for them about tourism and tourist attractions in Davao City. I hope to come out with an article that would project a comprehensive tourism story. I cannot do this on my own being hardly an amateur in photography. May I request resorts and hotel operators to provide me 4R or 5R pictures of your sites with brief descriptions of what tourists can expect. Send them to me at: GF Lozano Building, CM Recto Avenue, Davao City. I know that the Chinese are coming, not in the back door, but as tourists. And mind you, these are thousands of them.

Mati eyes tourism development
By Carmelito Q. Francisco Published : 2006-07-03
MATI, Davao Oriental—In its desire to lure more tourists and considering its vast potentials to become the next tourist destination, the municipal government in this Davao Oriental capital is looking into improving its tourism industry by investing in the development of its beautiful beaches and tourism facilities.
Louie Philippe N. Rabat, president of the Davao Oriental East Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said public sector investments in the industry has paved the way for private investors to look into the possibility of pouring in investments.
Rabat, whose father Francisco is the mayor of the municipality, said the municipal government has already seen the potentials of turning the municipality into a tourist destination.
“We really need public sector investments to spur the development of our industry,” the younger Rabat told the Business World last week. Among these public sector investments is the setting up of a baywalk through a reclamation program of the areas in what used to be the seawall.
Rabat explained that when his father started the project, the money set aside was only about P700,000, but the municipal government has continued to bankroll it as it has already demolished the old shanties in the area.
The baywalk, which needs at least P25 million to fully develop, has an area of about1.5 hectares, part of it was the 60-meter seashore that the municipal government reclaimed to start its development.
Under the plan, among those to be built are a marina, a landscaped walkway, a tree park and a four-lane road.
The baywalk project has reinforced the rehabilitation of the municipality’s wharf where the Philippine Ports Authority and the municipal government are jointly implementing with a P60 million fund.
The baywalk is located just perpendicular to the wharf, one of the two government-run wharves in the Davao Region, the other being the Sasa wharf in Davao City.
The municipal government is also looking into investing in a 1,000-seater convention center that will cater to regional events. A government official said the plan is to market the convention center to regional event organizers as Davao City, about two hours by land, has been luring national convention events.
“We will make Mati an alternative convention venue,” said the official, although admitting that there is still a need to a massive face-lifting.
At present, the source added, an investor from Compostela Valley has studied the possibility of setting up a 30-room hotel whose features and amenities can match those in Davao City. “We really need more hotel rooms if we want to become a convention center,” said the government officials, pointing out that visitors usually look for hotels that are high-end ones.
Another potential investment is the setting up of high-end resorts in the beach stretch of Dahican which is known for its white sand which can match world-class beaches, said Davao Oriental Second District Rep. Mayo Almario.
Almario said he will coordinate with the municipal government in putting up a new master plan for the development of the beach which has become the site for skimboarding and other similar activities.
A first class municipality, Mati has 26 barangays with about 105,908 inhabitants as of 2000.
The municipality is also known producer of coconut by-products, particularly copra and charcoal, it being the trading center of Davao Oriental, the country main producer of copra.

Mindanao-wide music TV show to be launched
Davao City (14 June) -- Here comes Muzika del Sur, a Davao-based half-hour cable television show that features the best of Mindanao’s music artistry, which will mark its maiden telecast on various cable channels in different Mindanao cities this June 15.
“It will showcase the vibrant Mindanao music scene like concerts, performances, features on Mindanao-born artists who made it big in the national scene, music videos of homegrown artists.” Said Dax Cañedo, executive producer of the show.
Cañedo said that it is high time that Mindanao particularly its music talent must be exposed to the public. Led by creative director Niño Flores of the Alchemy of Vision and Lights film and television productions, the show aims to be a groundbreaking aural and visual event in regional television with concepts aimed at highlighting the fiesta-like musical and artistic atmosphere in Mindanao.
“Sabi nila maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga cannon at mga baril na nagpuputukan, hindi totoo yan, maingay ang Mindanao dahil sa mga tugtog ng reggae, ska, rock, ethnic, hip-hop, acoustic, pop at iba pang musika na umaalingawngaw sa ating mga tenga, Nino Flores the show’s creative force said.
Proof of the pudding is the show’s first episode which features the Mix music fest held at the Wheels and More drive compound. The music fest organized by 105.9 Mix FM was graced by a total of 21 bands with performances that ranged from hardcore-rock to a Michael Buble-inspired pop-standard act.
Davaoena beauty Vanessa Yap and southern rocker Carlos Castaños hosts the show. Davao’s music show Durian jam will also be featured as a segment.
“This is a great show for Mindanao musicians, to be able to reach out to a wider audience. ”Said Wardy Puyod, bass guitarist of the Davaoeño rock band Lizard chips and co-producer of Durian Jam.
A Gensan band can be seen and heard in Cagayan de Oro and vice-versa, Davao bands who are so talented can now also be seen and heard across Mindanao added Puyod.
Mindanao’s particularly Davao has been feeling a musical renaissance of some sorts as local homegrown bands like Isla Era, Back by Midnite, Thavawenyoz and Sidecrash are attempting to invade the national music scene. A territory that have already been conquered by the likes of Joey Ayala, Free Style, South Border and Wardy Puyod’s high school classmate Juris Fernandez of the chart-topping MYMP.
“The musical dynamism here in Mindanao is the reason why we have produced this show.” said Cañedo.
The show will be shown every Thursady 10 pm, Saturdays and Tuesdays every 10:30 p.m. The show will be aired on Skycable Davao channel 28,Tagum channel 15, Zamboanga channel 15, General Santos channel 17, Home Channel Network 35, Digos Cable channel 11 and Parasat Cagayan de Oro channel 24. davaoeagle July 4th, 2006, 06:08 AM here is a bit of good news....according to the mindanao daily mirror...
TRAFFIC SIGNAL PROJECT TO START...
the city government will begin installing the 140 million peso traffic signalization project next week in 29 major intersections in davao city.
it features an upgradable design patterned after the los angeles traffic system.
the ones who will do the installing are abratique and associates. they also helped in installing the l.a. traffic light system.
all the materials being used are prefabricated and will be installed only during night time.
the project is expected to be finished by november and hopefully in december we will get to use the new traffic system....
yesssss!!!!
wowwwww! murag kaulion man sad ta ani oi! LOL. asa kaha ni ang 29 ka lights noh? 29 lang sa kay murag 48 man to ka intersections ang plan. but it's more than good enough for a start.
xzibit31 July 4th, 2006, 06:10 AM based on that article, the multi million amount is just for the traffic signs right? does this include the traffic lights?
signs and lights...the whole thing.... traffic signs for 29 intersections is quite expensive if u have 140 mil....kasama na lights dyan
davaoeagle July 4th, 2006, 06:12 AM based on that article, the multi million amount is just for the traffic signs right? does this include the traffic lights?
inclusive na seguro na tanan TJ kay laliman ka ug 140 million, though ang original budget was pegged at 340. pero no worries kay upgradable man unya pre-fab pa so puede ladderized ni ang implementation. this confirms what my friend said before that his friend who worked in Singapore went home to Davao after being tapped to help map out the spots for this project.
xzibit31 July 4th, 2006, 06:14 AM sana somebody can identify those intersections na lalagyan ng bagong mga traffic lights and signals...
what will they do with the old ones? i propose that they put it in intersections na d coverd sa new lights...dba?

1 sign of balanced progress, 120 million petots malaysian gargage bins scattered in all corners (from lasang to toril to calinan)

i agree but my concern is the old ones might not be compatible with the new ones.. those old ones might just be obsolete this time. i suggest our Davao City donates them to small brother cities like Digos, Panabo or Igacos. I prefer not to hand it down to Tagum kay datu pud na sila diha labi na kay si Mayor Uy na pud ang nagdala.

davaoeagle July 4th, 2006, 06:43 AM Mindanao travel exhibit to showcase tour destinations
By Kristale D. Aritcheta
THE Department of Tourism (DoT) in the city will launch the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE) on August 11 to 13 to showcase the potential tourist destinations of the city and its local products.
Marissa S. Te Eng Fo, Travel and Tour Promotion for the MTTE said that the activity is set to follow up the success of the Asian Tourism Forum (ATF) in the city last March.
"Davao received a very good impact at the ATF. Our rich resources and tourist destinations are worth promoting both in local and international market," she said.
Pia Lourdes P. Montano, of Par Travel Agency for the MTTE said that the expo would be the "first ever" in the city, which will showcase travel and tour packages for the growing market of inbound and outbound travel and tours.
"We have tapped other tourism boards, even other countries," Montano said.
She said that Ilocos of Region 1 and Vigan of Region 6 will be participating in the expo and also the neighboring countries like Palau, Indonesia, Malaysia, Hongkong, and Singapore.
"Travel agencies from these areas will showcase their travel packages in the expo," she said. "So, instead of coming to Manila, people may come to Davao and see the destinations they could enjoy for vacation and fun."
Te Eng Fo said the expo will have a lot of surprises and entertainment for those who are looking for a cheaper destination.
She bared that last Saturday, around 25 foreign airline companies with offices in Manila went here in the city to see what Davao is all about.
"They are looking for a new destination to go to. They just observed and found out that Davao is a good destination," she said. KDA

Homestay program revitalized
By Rizalene P. Acac
THE Department of Tourism (DoT) in the region has revitalized the home stay program to address the upsurge in the number of tourist arrivals.
DOT Assistant Regional Director Roger Layson said the difficulty of accommodating foreign and local tourists have been very notable in the past months.
He said the home stay program would involve private homeowners who could offer extra rooms for those who cannot be accommodated in hotels.
There are 3,000 hotel rooms in the region.
At present, several places in Davao Oriental and Island Garden City of Samal have adopted the home stay program.
Layson said there are about 10 homes in San Isidro and three in Mati, all in Davao Oriental, which are active in accepting guests. “We really need to revitalize the home stay programs because we see that there is a very big need,” he said.
In Davao City where home stay was introduced in 1988, the list of homes that involved in program would still be activated.
He said organizations like Rotary and Kiwanis, which host their foreign members when they visit the country, often live in homes of the local members.
He said families interested in getting into the home stay program should undergo trainings and seminars because there is a standard that need to be followed.
“We tell them breakfast should be served or there should be a separate bathroom for them or to keep away kids from running in the house (if they have guests),” he said.
In August, DoT anticipates the arrival of more tourists with the holding of the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTTE).
The event is a follow through to the Asean Tourism Forum to further promote the region as a tourist destination.
Organizers said 45 exhibitors from the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth area expected to participate in the event.
The local government units of Davao provinces, South Cotabato, Saranggani and General Santos City also promised to join the event, the first in Mindanao.
franz235 July 4th, 2006, 08:09 AM Top 3 Davao Streets:
1.) Roxas Avenue - aside from the fact that my school's there (ADDU), it's a very wide and clen street. I would just like to suggest that traffic lights must be posted between the intersection of Roxas and C.M. Recto avenues. Traffics occur there during peak hours. I like the street also because Marco Polo is there, a freedom park with a high-tech police outpost is there, and the road is consistently used as an alternative venue for "KAAN DAWET/PIGING SA DA'N" during Kadayawan Festivities.
2.) Diversion Road - the whole stretch from Ulas entrance to Panacan exit, it's very useful if you avoid traffic. The road is smooth also. Many attractions will be seen from the road such as Gap Farm, Orange Grove Real Estate, Riverfront Corporate City, Buhangin Vehicular Underpass, and of course Davao International Aiport. It is good to build a railway system there because the road is very wide.
3.) Quirino Avenue/McArthur Highway - Quirino has many establishments and very accessible. I like the whole stretch of the islands with Waling-Waling lamposts, especially there in NCCC Mall. Again, I suggest that a traffic signal system must be erected there especially in the MA-A Intersection.

Greenbelt Park - consider that done na! may budget na and the lgu has been coordinating with several sectors for its development. naghihintay lang ng tamang time kc most of our events are being held in PTA aight?

the trend now in Metro Manila is converting a particular section of a mall for contact center operations. since malls got wide spaces, strategic location, and amenities for employees such as restos, retail outlets, etc. G-South Davao's Corporate Center can be converted into one. A particular section of Victoria Plaza can also be developed for a contact center operation.

davaoeagle July 5th, 2006, 05:52 AM Growth in tourist arrivals attributed to ATF ’06 hosting
By Kristale D. Aritcheta
THE Asian Tourism Forum (ATF) has promoted the city as a destination as indicated by the increase in hotel occupancy, a tourism industry player said.
Marie Jovie P. Ay-ad, Hotel Sales and Marketing Association of Davao president and member of the organizing committee for the Mindanao Travel and Tour Expo (MTEE), based on the data, hotel occupancy grew by six percent during the first semester of the year compared with the same period last year.
"This indicates that the industry is making good this year since more and more tourists visit the city," she said.
However, she failed to mention the actual number of visitors to the city during the period.
Ay-ad even pointed out that the increase was the result of the visit of foreign visitors, particularly those who got interest in the city after the ATF which was held in January.
She said the ratio between domestic and foreign tourists has drastically changed during the last few months considering that last year, the ration was 90 percent domestic. At present, the ratio is 75 percent domestic.
The holding of the MTTE will again become a big boost to the tourism industry, she added, pointing out that buyers from other parts of the country and those coming from other countries would be able to see for themselves the potentials of Davao Region as a destination. KDA
davaoeagle July 5th, 2006, 06:00 AM City government accepting bids for traffic project
By Rizalene P. Acac
THE CITY government is implementing the P140-million traffic signalization as it starts accepting bids for the project.
City Administrator Wendel Avisado said the City Engineer’s Office is accepting bidding applications from contractors.
Avisado explained that the project will involve setting up a traffic system in 29 intersections of the city and is expected to be completed in November.
“The construction would be done only at night so as not to bring inconvenience to the public,” he said.
Avisado said the traffic signalization would not be as modern as earlier planned by the city government because, instead of using censorized signalization, it will only use synchronized system.
The traffic system, he added, would be pattered after a place in America where the equipment were bought.
The project is part of the P990 million-loan that the city government obtained from the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Sydney Coordinated Adaptive Traffic System (SCATS)
--> Touted to be the most technologically advanced traffic control system in the world-since 1994 and was first piloted in Cebu City.
--> Controls and coordinates 78 traffic intersections across the city, has a six-computer system installed at the Citom office.
--> Sensors at intersections notify the central computer system about traffic volume. Based on the data it gathers, the computer then tells traffic lights when to change from red to green and vice-versa.
--> In the event of a cut-off or breakdown of the main computer, traffic lights automatically become independent and change based on a pre-programmed timer.
Sensors imbedded beneath the road can be found in the intersections (4 rectangular markings to fit the wheels of a vehicle when it is on full stop).
Mas maayo unta ug censorized ang traffic system ninyo bai.. kay mas effective man cya dba.... The Davao City government should plan ahead more than just having a traffic system... I see Davao as an economic power in the country because it is closer to our Asean Neighbors... and It is the gateway to southern Philippines... Go Forward Dava!

tj_brewed July 5th, 2006, 06:23 AM More schoolbuildings turned over to Davao 2nd district
July 5, 2006
PIA
Davao City (5 July) -- Government officials are doing everything to address the lack of classrooms and ensure that students will not be affected by the problem
In Davao City, 2nd district Representative Vincent Garcia, in a unified effort with the City Government, private entities and individuals inaugurated and turned-over a total of about 93 classrooms – 21 from the city government; 19 from donor entities; and 53 other classrooms scheduled for turn-over or a total of 99.
Congressman Garcia, together with different barangay captains in his district and Department of Education officials inaugurated and turned-over various elementary and national high school buildings spread out.
The bulk of classrooms were constructed mostly out of his own congressional development fund while others came from his share from the education department which he took cognizance even during his first term of office.
Four school buildings are scheduled for bidding and are expected to start construction probably before the end of the year.
We are taking bold steps to fix the perennial problem during and even after school duration in cooperation with other institutions, which we think will go a long way in boosting our common efforts in providing such services particularly to students, Garcia said.
“The government is also very appreciative of the different personalities who have shown their support and generosity in the pursuit to boost our efforts in improving our educational system,” Congressman Garcia stressed.
School buildings completed, inaugurated and turned-over including those under construction and for completion includes; Lapu-Lapu elementary school (ES) with a 4-classroom 2-storey building; San Juan ES; Bangoy Central ES 6-classroom 2-storey building; F. Bustamante National High School (NHS) 4 classroom, 2-storey building (2 separate building of 2- classroom 2-storey buildings); Binoang NHS; Busque NHS; Ubalde NHS; Somimao NHS. and with still many scheduled for completion.
The Davao City Government spearheaded by City Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte has also provided schoolbuildings in Mahayag, Dumanlas, San Isidro, Mapula, F. Banboy, A.L. Navarro, Barnardo Carpio; Panulawan and many more.
Private donors include: ALSONS schoolbuilding led by Rosevida Dominguez; HOLCIM Philipines under the Corporate Social Responsibility program; DLPC; Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce & Industry c/o Gilbert Go; and Vicente Ang Chiokok. (PIA)

thanks for your concern Rage, that's well taken. anyhow, our LGU shelved the original plan to install the sensorized one due to budget contraints and the city is not so beset with traffic back-up as more often than not, traffic here has always been under control inspite of surge of number of vehicles plying the streets of Metro Davao.
I subscribe to the idea that Davao should train it's eyes to whats ahead as it is indeed headed for some "greatness" of sort but as far as this particular infra upgrade is concerned, i don't think this is a case of "backwardness" at all. Not to be cocky, even here in Canada where most citizens are law-abiding, we have some areas which still use the synchronized system ( Vancouver is one)and there's no problem.
As in the case of Davao, this initial upgrade can be upgraded to more advanced technology and it might even be more than the much - ballyhoed SCATS system popularly conceptualized and used in Australia.
Synchronized traffic system is still commonplace in some US mega cities like that of LA.

Davao-Japan connection
Greetings!
I am Masantaka Ajiro, the President of Japan-Philippines Volunteer Association with offices in Japan and in Davao City. I am a Buddhist Bishop in Japan and I have come to love Davao City and call it my second home. My association has been extending donations and volunteer services to the different areas in Davao City. We have been in existence for 15 years now. Our thrusts are the following:
1. Technical support to Philippine Nikkei Jin Kai International School and Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku. Equipment and program assistance are extended to both basic and tertiary educational institutions.
2. Educational support program - Scholarship grant to poor but deserving students of Davao City. Our scholars are supported by their foster families in Japan; their support include tuition fees, other school fees, books and even an expense paid trip to Japan.
3. We also help in solving the environmental problems of Davao City by providing monthly financial support to the Calinan Socio-Ecological Development Organization (CASEDO) in its ecological and socio-cultural program. Every year, Japanese students and professionals visit Davao City to help in tree planting activity and in maintenance of the watershed area.
4. We also provide assistance to the people in the depressed areas of Davao City by giving them funds to sustain their livelihood program. We have beneficiaries from Batolusa, Marapangi, Daliao and otehr areas in Toril District.
I come to Davao every month, everytime I am here I am always excited to see the growth and development of this City.
I will be in Davao again on July 5, 2006. I will bring with me the Manager of Big Holiday, our country's biggest Travel agency with more or less 7,000 branches scattrered all over Japan. We want to discuss with you the possibility of opening a direct flight or a connecting flight from Japan to Davao City in order to hasten our flgith schedule and to attract more Japanese tourists to come directly to Davao. I am also coordinating with the Regional Tourism Office and the Philippine Airlines for a possible tie up geared towards the realization of our dream to come to Davao directly from Japan.
davaoeagle July 5th, 2006, 06:48 AM :) im so sorry for being naive bros...pero what's the difference between Synchronized traffic system and Censorized Traffic System?
this the way i understand it.
Sensorized: Sensors are embedded underneath the streets to sense weight or loads of a paricular street. The heavier the load is, the more green lights there are and vice-versa.
Synchronized: Lights (a series) on one street will have the same color whereas streets perpendicular to it will be the opposite colors. For Example, if JP has green all the way from GMALL to say, Obrero St. all streets accross it will have reds.
Synchronised system is heavily patronized here in Vancouver and there's lots of signs such as green left arrows for left turning traffic, before it finally goes solid green for on-coming vehicles. There would also be no right turns on red lights and flashing reds-where the road becomes automatic 4-way, flashing yellow- proceed with care and flashing green- as non-stop, etc, etc.

By Josie San Pedro
Getz Pharma Philippines had a very successful corporate launch here in Davao City on June 16, 2006 at the Grand Ballroom of the Marco Polo Hotel. It was graced by more than two hundred doctors from Davao City, and nearby cities of Panabo and Tagum; Mati, Davao Oriental; General Santos City, and Cagayan de Oro City.
The launch formally opened with a sumptuous dinner. Entertainment was provided by Friends in Harmony and Little Big Star finalist Hiroaki Ueda. Highlight of the evening was the presence of inspirational speakers, Francis Kong and Dr. Daniel L. Tan. Both shared their views on "Standing Strong" and "Putting Patients First", respectively, which was the theme of the corporate launch. Both speakers elicited a strong and spirited response from their appreciative audience.
Graciously on hand to welcome the doctors were the Getz Pharma sales group headed by Averell Gaspar, National Sales & and Paul Pangilinan, Product Manager.
Arthur Zapanta, District Sales Manager for Mindanao, has this to say: "This is, by far, the most successful launch we've had outside of Metro Manila. We were indeed honored by the presence of so many doctors from all over Mindanao and we are positive that this will mark the start of a fruitful relationship with our doctor friends."
It was an evening of pleasant company and delightful conversation among the members of a profession that have the health and wellness of the people in their hearts

i think the city is installing the sensorized traffic system and not the synchronized one. that is why it cost 140 million for just 29 intersections...
that means the city will pay 4,827,586.21 for each intersection. that is way to much for a synchronized traffic system and just about right for a sensorized one.

settling for something less and mediocre again? or will davao gonna wait for the city up north to install its very own scats before thinking of upgrading to their very own scats. this is the problem with davao, you always aim lower than what you deserve. why aim for the good when you can aim (and possibly, hit the real target of being) for the best. a sensorized system can shift to a synchronized system (pre-programmed, time-based) while a synchronized system is just "as it is" a synchronized one and can never be sensorized except when future upgradings are done...... which means additional funds (or in this case, loans!)
and for everybodys info, LA uses SCATS!

Duterte hesitant about sensorized traffic plan
October 06, 2004
Sunstar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2004/10/06/news/duterte.hesitant.about.sensorized.traffic.plan.html)
* Says its the people who needs discipline first, otherwise the expensive machines would prove useless.
DAVAO City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte is hesitant about the implementation of the sensorized traffic system, which would cost the city some P200 million.
During last Sunday's episode of the 'Ato ni Bay' media forum at the Yellow Fin restaurant, Duterte said it's the people who needs discipline first, otherwise the expensive machines would prove useless.
"Sayang lang ang kamahal sa traffic system nga atong ibutang sa syudad kun ang mga tawo way disiplina, way pulos gihapon ang tanan (Without dicipline on the part of the people, the expensive sensorized traffic system is bound to fail)," Duterte said.
"Kinahanglan unahon nato ug disiplina ang mga panghuna-huna sa mga taga Davao nga musunod ug (We need to change the mindset of the residents of Davao to obey) traffic rules and regulations kay ang disiplinadong mga katawhan ang pinakaimportante nga component sa bag-ong traffic system (because the most important component of a new traffic system are disciplined people)," Duterte added.
The proposed sensorized traffic system was supposed to be set up in several vital points in the city.
Aside from easing the flow of traffic, it is also designed to easily trace erring drivers and traffic violators.
It is also equipped with cameras that would capture the plate numbers of vehicles and could be an important tool in curbing criminalities in the city.
Synchronized, not sensorized traffic system for city
January 10, 2005
Sunstar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2005/01/10/news/synchronized.not.sensorized.traffic.system.for.city.html)
INSTEAD of the projected sensorized traffic system, which would have cost P350 million pesos to implement, the City Government has opted to instead go for a synchronized traffic system in the city.
City Administrator Wendel Avisado said, "the government will now instead just spend P140 million for a synchronized traffic system".
He added that the project, which will be implemented as soon as possible, will provide a synchronized traffic lights in 29 major and critical areas in the city.
Avisado said the P210 million saved from the sensorized traffic allocation will instead be used for the other projects of the city like upgrading the solid waste management program.
The proposed sensorized traffic system would have enabled the government to easily spot and apprehend traffic violators and criminals because it is equipped with high-tech cameras.
Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte however opted to suspend the sensorized traffic system until the city drivers will learn how to discipline themselves.
"No matter how high-tech our traffic system is if the drivers lack discipline, everything will be useless," Duterte said in the vernacular.
tj_brewed July 5th, 2006, 03:07 PM Davao Region's Goal for FY2007
The Regional Development Council, the highest (GO-NGO) policy-making body in the Davao region, held its first meeting for the year last April 25. The meeting was presided over by its co-chair, Mayor Rogelio Antalan of the Island Garden City of Samal.
The meeting served as preparatory to the budget review which the Council annually undertakes soon after the National Budget Call is issued. Basically, the Council discussed two major items which will provide direction and basis for assessing the Fiscal Year 2007 budget proposals of national government agencies in the region.
The FY 2007 Annual Investment Program (AIP) was reviewed and approved by the Council. AIP contains programs, projects, and activities proposed for implementation in 2007 relative to the attainment of targets as advocated by Davao Region Development Plan, 2004-2010
Before its presentation to the council, the AIP underwent a validation process among concerned regional line agencies and the RDC XI technical secretariat during the first quarter of the year. This process gave room for changing priorities of the region and emerging policy of the year. This process gave room for changing priorities in their respective localities.
The FY 2007 AIP indicated that the region would be requiring an estimated P23 Billion in public investments during the year, broken down as follows: infrastructure sector, P20.8 B; economic sector, P1.1B; and social sector, P1.1B.
Another important item taken up was the Davao Region Industry Cluster Plans, 2005-2010, which was presented by DTI director Merly Cruz, who currently chairs the Economic Development Committee of the Council.
The Industry Cluster Plans were formulated in support to “industry clustering” which is the main strategy adopted by the Region in developing its SME sector, generating investments and exports, and job creation. These were crafted together with the region’s stakeholders of the eight industry clusters which are considered the region’s priority industries, as follows: banana, mango, coconut, seaweed, wood, mining, ecotourism, and ICT.
These plans highlight the framework and strategies to be undertaken for pushing development of the priority industries. The Council approved the plans with recommendations for enhancement in the finalization of the document.
The council also invited Medco chair, Usec. Virgilio Leyretana, to share o*n the agreements made during the Philippine Development Forum held last March 30-31 in Tagaytay. In relation to initiatives on Mindanao, he encouraged the Council to review the Mindanao Framework Plan 2000 for possible updating in coordination with other Mindanao RDCs. Aside from Leyretana’s inputs, Medco also apprised the Council o*n the status of Official Development Assistance (ODA) in Mindanao
Being well-attended, the meeting was assessed to be highly fruitful in terms of firming up the region’s development direction up to 2010. Co-chair and presiding officer Antalan thus encouraged the continued participation of the member agencies during Council meetings, citing the potency of collective action in addressing the region’s development requirements.

tj_brewed July 5th, 2006, 06:03 PM P374M budget okayed; P57M for peace
July 5, 2006
Sunstar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/net/2006/07/05/p374m.budget.okayed.p57m.for.peace.html)
DAVAO CITY -- The City Council approved on second reading Tuesday the P374 million supplemental budget 1 ensuring the release of the fund right after the formalities of a third reading.
Getting a huge share of the budget is the City Engineer's Office with P68.555 million, P68.440 million of which is for repair and maintenance of roads and bridges. This is aside from the P13.594 million for infrastructure projects.
The city's peace and order program came next with P57.778 million for general administration.
Funded with P56.52 million is the additional P1,000 each in allowances for city workers from January to August 2006.
Maintenance and other operating expenses for the various committees, boards, and councils of the city got a total of P32,611 million. For garbage collection, a total of P30 million was allotted.
Councilor Bonifacio E. Militar, during the regular council session, said the supplemental budget is intended to augment the City Government's general fund, development fund, and economic enterprises particularly the operation of markets and slaughterhouses.
The original budget proposal amounted to P363,618,914.89 but it was amended to P374,935,314.89 after a committee hearing by the finance committee.
Among the amendments made is the inclusion of the appropriation for Urban Land Reform Program for 2006 in the amount of P10,016,400 for the acquisition of a 6.6-hectare land in Bago Oshiro, Tugbok District for the resettlement of the Small Communal Farmer's Association.
City Administrator Wendel E. Avisado said the addendum was ordered by Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte and that it has been overdue and is supposed to be included in the last year's budget.
Lolita Ferolino, president of the Small Communal Farmer's Association, said they are grateful for the help extended to them by the City Government.
Ferolino said about 200 families are currently living at the area since 1998, however, it is only now that they can have the lots under their names.
"We are currently conducting a survey now in order for us to appropriate the 6.6-hectare land equally to its beneficiaries," Ferolino said.
Another amendment was made after Councilor Jesus Zozobrado requested the committee to realign P1,300,000 from the annual fund for the installation of main line water pipes in Tugbok and Toril, rip-rapping of a canal in Toril, and road concreting in Tugbok and Calinan.
The P1,300,000 is supposed to fund Zozobrado's "Comprehensive Medical and Dental Program," a maternal and child medical assistance program for Baguio, Marilog, Tugbok, and Calinan districts.
With the amendments made, the general fund was increased from P346,476,914.56 to P356,493,314.56 while the development fund was decreased from P28,753,298.97 to P13,442,000.33.
Avisado said supplemental budget 1 is sourced from the P44,080,614.50 2005 surplus, P5,387,500 balance from the slashed annual budget of the Traffic Management Center, P708,800 reverted fund and estimated revenue out of the amended revenue tax code that is P296,300.
According to Avisado, the whole budget is properly and evenly distributed to help implement the city's projects.
Avisado said a total of P57,778,000 will be appropriated for the peace and order program of Duterte, P1.8-million for barangays Angliongto and Hizon, being newly recognized barangays, and P15 million for the city's crisis intervention program.

Here's an article i found from the Asian Development Bank's website regarding our international airport. I guess this has been posted before but for reference purposes, lemme repost it again..
Upgraded Davao City International Airport Is Ready for More Passengers and Bigger Aircraft
Asian Development Bank (http://www.adb.org/Media/Articles/2006/10057-Philippines-Davao-airport/)
WITH AIR transportation crucial to economic and social connectivity in the Philippine archipelago, the new $128 million state-of-the-art international airport in this city is a welcome development. It is now fully operational and is raring to take in more passengers and bigger aircraft.
With ADB financing, the Davao airport in Mindanao has been upgraded and expanded to provide reliable and safe all-weather operations that meet international standards and remove infrastructure bottlenecks which were constraining the growth of domestic and international air services. It will also enhance Davao’s access to nearby markets and improve the overall economic prospects of the Southern Philippines, and could be considered one vital link for the intermodal transport network essential for this area.
Last year, actual passenger volume already surpassed one million domestic passengers flown in by Philippine Airlines, Cebu Pacific, Air Philippines and Asian Spirit out of 14 daily local flights. International passengers to and from Manado and Singapore reached almost 25,000. But Davao’s spacious and modern terminal building is designed to accommodate much more, and can easily accommodate up to twice its designed minimum passenger capacity of one million passengers.
The old airport terminal accommodated less than one million passengers in its last year of operation. It did not attract international flights and the city therefore fell short of its strategic role in the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The passenger terminal had exceeded its capacity and the instrument landing system was not usable for precision approaches and landings. As a result, international flights did not fly to and from Davao, and international passengers heading for or leaving Davao were forced to use Manila as a transfer point.
Today, its present daily passenger volume is roughly 1,500, with the early morning peak hour servicing the bulk of that number. The succeeding flights do not have as much passenger traffic. But even at its peak, the airport can handle the steady inflow of passengers with its 14 domestic and 14 international check-in counters, almost double than its previous number of counters. The Check-in counters are equipped with electronic weighing scales and conveyors and its baggage handling system is also computerized.
The upgraded airport was funded through a loan from ADB, approved in 1994, which provided $41 million while the European Investment Bank provided $23 million. The original cost of the project was $105 million but due to foreign exchange escalation costs, the Asian financial crisis, and land acquisition costs, total cost of the Project reached $128 million.
The airport, officially named Francisco Bangoy International Airport, opened on 2 December 2003. The 209-hectare airport development for both airside and landside civil works was constructed in four years’ time. The airport upgrading consisted of runway extension of 500 meters, achieving a usable take-off length of 3,000 meters that could now accommodate currently operated wide-body aircraft of major airlines, even 747s. The installation of a new landing instrumentation system (ILS) for both Runways 05 and 23 upgraded its compliance to International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) operating category - Precision Approach Category 1, similar to Manila’s Ninoy Aquino International Airport. It can accommodate 8 to 10 aircraft landings per hour, depending on the size, and has the equivalent 8 gate holding areas for those aircraft.
“The Air Traffic Control (ATC) tower is considered the most advanced here in the Philippines, even more sophisticated than NAIA’s,” boasts assistant airport manager Joey Saddam who was then the project manager of the airport construction.
The project also covers the construction of a new Malay architecture-inspired terminal building which cost P1 billion and is four times bigger than the old airport terminal. It is highly computerized, more secure, and has more commercial spaces for concessionaires at approximately 9,000 sq. m. It has four new units of boarding bridges for passengers. Airport Manager Frederick San Felix considers their security system quite strict. Baggage is regularly screened three times prior to passenger check-in/boarding. “It’s better that you know that all the baggages have been thoroughly checked… for your own protection,” he stresses.
Besides the main terminal building, there are also new support facilities like the Administration Building, the Central Plant Building, Airfield Maintenance Building, and Fire/Crash/Rescue Building. It has a 688-slot car parking area and 4 slots for shuttle buses. It has a 3-megawatt standby power generator.
The Energy Management Control System for the centralized air conditioning system, electrical and lights system, is now located in just one room. Its Access Control System ensures that not all airport personnel have access to all areas of the airport such that certain cards can only enter selected doors and everybody entering them is registered.
It also has a Flight Information Display System and Closed Circuit Television System complementing the terminal’s security system. The Cargo Terminal Building covers almost 5,580 sq. meters and can handle up to 84,600 tons a year. In 2005, actual cargo volume was almost 44,000 tons.
With such modern facilities, the Davao City airport officials feel they can justify their proposed five-fold increase in terminal fees from P40 to P200 per passenger, the same as the fee being charged in Manila and Cebu airports. Rentals are also proposed to be increased to raise the airport’s revenues, which only grossed almost P120 million in 2005, for its future sustainability.
With a modern international airport in place, it is hoped that the vast economic potentials of Mindanao will finally be unlocked and optimized to the fullest after decades-long peace and order problems and poverty concerns.

tj_brewed July 5th, 2006, 06:16 PM Davao gets big chunk of SME loans
July 6, 2006
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/news.asp?fi=p060706.htm&no=07)
Davao City (6 July) -- Davao region got the bulk of the loans that were accessed by small medium entrepreneurs in Mindanao through the Small Business Corporation (SBC).
According to SBC chair and chief executive officer Zorayda Amelia C. Alonzo, loans released to Southern Mindanao accounted for 68 percent or an equivalent of P630 million for an aggregate lending from 2002 to 2005.
She said that within four years SBC's total lending to Mindanao reached P930 million.
The remaining 23 percent of the total amount released to SMEs she said were shared by Regions 9, 10, 12, CARAGA and ARMM with P300 million.
Alonzo said the target this year is a P930 million-loan amount that covers wholesale and retail loans benefited 5,000 entrepreneurs, she said.
Alonzo is confident of surpassing the P1 billion target by the end of this year considering the aggregate lending to micro and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Mindanao has reached over P900 million.
For better accessibility the SB Corp has established a desk office in Cagayan de Oro City and this will support the requirements of the existing Mindanao Area Office in Davao City. The Cagayan Branch will cater to SMEs in Northern Mindanao, CARAGA and the Zamboanga peninsula.
Alonzo also said that they have tied-up with banks, non-government organizations and other finance institutions to widen their reach and to provide better credit access to SMEs for those located in the far-flung areas of Mindanao. :)

tj_brewed July 5th, 2006, 07:29 PM Cooperation pact signed between Davao, Sulawesi
July 6, 2006
Sunstar (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2006/07/06/bus/cooperation.pact.signed.between.davao.sulawesi.html)
A COOPERATION Agreement was recently signed between the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc., through its industry association affiliates Davao Hog-Farmers Association and Davao Poultry Industry Association, and the BIMP-Eaga Northern Sulawesi.
During last week's visit of North Sulawesi Governor SH Sarundajang to Davao City, a meeting was organized by the Mindanao Business Council and the BIMP-Eaga Business Council at the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry boardroom.
Both parties recognize the important role that respective chambers can play in enhancing private sector initiatives and resources towards economic prosperity.
Moreover, they believe that this can be best achieved through a strong cooperation among all sectors of the economy and the establishment and strengthening of inter-chamber and inter-association relations.
The said cooperation agreement between the two parties is comprised of a foster friendly relation between the parties; a mutual sharing of opportunities for information exchange on business opportunities for shared economic development including important public and private opportunities; and trade and investment information particularly on the hog and poultry sector.
The agreement also provides for the exploration of ways and means of promoting trade and industrial cooperation and facilitates joint venture agreements, technical cooperation, market networking and linkages between Davao City and Northern Sulawesi on matters that affect the hogs and poultry sector.
Also part of the agreement is the facilitation of the importation to Northern Sulawesi of approximately 128 tons of hog products, 152 tons of frozen poultry products and 111 tons of egg products every month from Davao City.
This importation will be complemented by the export of approximately 3,000 to 6,000 tons of corn every month from Indonesia to be used as feeds by Davao based hog-farmers and poultry-raisers.
Among the signatories were Eduardo So, president of the Davao Hog-Farmers Association; Simeon Soriano, president of the Davao Poultry Industry Association, and Jeffrey Wurangian, vice chair of BIMP-Eaga Northern Sulawesi Secretariat.
This agreement, which was facilitated by the Mindanao Business Council, will help enhance the chambers' roles in promoting, developing, and strengthening the business sector in their respective countries.
junax July 6th, 2006, 02:51 AM ^^ good morning/evening people!
this the way i understand it.
There would also be no right turns on red lights and flashing reds-where the road becomes automatic 4-way, flashing yellow- proceed with care and flashing green- as non-stop, etc, etc.
the way i see it... mas maganda ang sensorized of course bcoz hi tech ang dating... and is a must for cities with congested intersections due to large number of vehicles but with narrow streets. but on the other hand, dito sa davao we are blessed with wide roads, kahit nga ngayon na hindi pa naimplement ang traffic lights update, the streets na very noticeable ang heavy traffic are only: matina-pangi and matina-maa during rush hour. other streets are as smooth as roads with SCATS. so ok lang para sa akin na synchronised lang ang upgrade bcoz macompensate naman ito sa 12, 20 and 40 meter streets natin. hindi naman tayo lugi kasi ang ma save na money papunta naman sa ibang projects. good signs and effective traffic system lang ayos na like synchronized system. suggestion ko lang, yung masave na money sana for improvement of our existing roads na lang. overlay fresh asphalt like what is happening in bankerohan and LTO boulevard kasi kelangan na i-maintain ang ibang overlays sa downtown. markings too like the one in matina... i notice sa manila, tinitipid nila ang roads nila. ang 20 meter road nila ginagawa nilang 8 lanes (with those markings) while dito sa davao 6 lanes lang ang 20 meter kaya nag liliparan ang mga "TORIL uso-uso riders" dahil sa lapad ng linya.
picture or osmeña blvd, cebu by slerz. the right lane is approximately 10 to 12 meter and used as 4 lanes beautifully marked.
http://i55.photobucket.com/albums/g124/slerz3/ob3.jpg
here's the picture of matina intersection with right lane approximately 10 to 12 meter too, but with the markings gone, used only as 3 lanes.
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/matina4.jpg
advantage: malapad ang lane ng isang vehicle
disadvatage: without markings, kanya kanyang singit ang mga taxi at jeepneys during rush hour.
:)

junax July 6th, 2006, 06:05 AM settling for something less and mediocre again? or will davao gonna wait for the city up north to install its very own scats before thinking of upgrading to their very own scats. this is the problem with davao, you always aim lower than what you deserve. why aim for the good when you can aim (and possibly, hit the real target of being) for the best. a sensorized system can shift to a synchronized system (pre-programmed, time-based) while a synchronized system is just "as it is" a synchronized one and can never be sensorized except when future upgradings are done...... which means additional funds (or in this case, loans!)
that's ok valium, davao city... philippines in general is not a rich country. cebu is lucky to have funds to install SCATS bcoz they really need it to decongest their main roads. if any other city can afford to have one, that would be very great as long as the purpose is served, clear those streets with traffic jams. as for davao not aiming high, i guess it did aimed high in getting the synchronized systems bcoz ala pa namang manila or cebu like traffic dito eh na nangangailangan talaga ng sensorized system (baka maging white elephant pa nga kung hindi naman nagagamit ang feature nito). synchronized can be as effective as the sensorized here in davao complemented with wide roads, and by the time na kelangan na siguro ang feature ng sensorized system, say in 5 to 10 years, sira na or obsolete na ang na-installed. davao aimed what is really needed, sabi nga ni DIGONG disiplina ang kelangan hindi traffic lights. sa ibang city na matraffic na at saka narrow pa ang mga streets, they should be the one getting the sensorized system if they can afford the 200 million difference.
SiliconGulf July 6th, 2006, 07:20 AM Perhaps instead of spending 200 million on devices, they can instead be used to organize the traffic system (tricycle lanes, for instance), pay more traffic cops and fine drivers who don't follow lanes. Tama si Rody. Discipline muna. Use the funds for that instead.

BSP eyes P122-M credit line for Enterprise Bank
THE Davao Regional Office of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas has recommended a credit line of P122 million to support the lending operations of a Mindanao rural bank specializing in microfinance.
Cesar L. Balan, BSP regional office director, made the announcement during last Saturday’s blessing of a branch in Davao City of Enterprise Bank which will cater mostly to microfinance clients.
Enterprise Bank, under the leadership of its president, lawyer Ronald Alviso, is acknowledged as one of the most successful pioneers in microfinance and is the second biggest bank practitioner of microfinance in Mindanao, a reason it has been allowed by BSP to establish a branch in Davao City. The other branch in the Davao region is in Tagum City.
Enterprise has 11 branches, eight of them in the Caraga Region, where the bank first started.
Balan said that at present there is a moratorium on bank licensing and branching in the country. “The exception is when the city or municipality has no banking unit or branch to be put up is a microfinance-oriented bank or branch,” he said.
However, the applicants must prove among other things that they have in their organization the technical capabilities and ample successful experience in microfinance, he said.
“Microfinance is now a by-word especially among thrift, rural and cooperative banks,’ Balan said.
This was after microfinance was institutionalized by the BSP in 2000 by recognizing it as a legitimate banking activity and set the rules and regulations for its practice within the banking sector, he said.
During the blessing of the EBI branch office in Bajada, near the Social Security System building, Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan cut the ceremonial ribbon with Ignacio U. Alvizo, EBI chairman, EBI president Ronald Alvizo and Jerome Cesar O. Aranas, EBI Davao manager.
A day earlier at the Garden Oases in Barrio Obrero, EBI launched its new product, its micro housing loan program aimed at “improving the living conditions of micro-entrepreneurs and make their homes livable, sanitary and secure.”
During the launch, three guest speakers explained the significance of the programs of their individual agencies and institutions in poverty alleviation. The speakers were Ed Jimenez, consultant of the Development Bank of the Philippines; Eufemia C. Mendoza, DBP senior vice president; and Ronald Fontanillas, HUDCC director.
The rural bank also released housing loans to its first batch of clients in Davao during the launch.

oist bro! pasagdi lang na sila oi...eheheheheheh wala gani ko nag-apil apil sa away didto..pasagdan lang nako..what's important is that Dabawenyos are satisfied with what's happening in Davao....
usahay ok man pud cguro na i-underrate nila ang Davao. I have friends like that in Manila. before they visited Davao, they thought na barrio looking ang city. i didnt dispute them...bahala sila! but when they arrived in Davao...nashock sila...Airport palang..pang world class na! eheheheheheheh
and ofcourse na shock sila sa The Venue - the largest bar in the country in terms of size. ug uban pa....
so let them underrate davao...it's more fullfilling to see them saying "ay..mali pala ako! ehehehhehehehe

Global Davao July 6th, 2006, 07:48 PM PRESIDENT Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is again scheduled to arrive in Davao City on Saturday.
Arroyo is set to meet with the Regional Development Council and conduct a cabinet meeting at Central Bank.
But unconfirmed reports Thursday said the President will immediately proceed to Compostela Valley after her arrival in the city.
After which, she will go to Cotabato City where she will conduct the cabinet meeting.
During the last scheduled visit of Arroyo in the region, text messages had circulated about planned New People's Army (NPA) bombings in Nabunturan and Monkayo, Compostela Valley and in Tagum City.
But Colonel Luini Mirar, Army's 401st Brigade commander, said Thursday this particular threat on the conduct of bombings in time for Arroyo's visit has waned down.
Mirar said they conducted action on such threat and that they "are not laying down and continuously monitoring the rebel group" until the present.
On June 23, the President was scheduled to arrive in the city for several commitments, but it was unceremoniously canceled after she suffered from abdominal pains due to a viral infection. (BOT)

mydavaocity July 6th, 2006, 08:03 PM I just finished reading thread 14, hehe...
Can somebody give me the link for thread 12?
mydavaocity July 6th, 2006, 08:08 PM TJ, I read pala about your allergies. It's really possible to develop allergies to certain susbstances kahit na you're used to it. Kasi I started taking mefenamic acid and ibuprofen as pain killer for headaches, abdominal cramps, etc... when I was about 13. But I developed allergies sa mefenamic and ibuprofen when I was already mga 20 yrs old. I had super huge itchy bumps sa may eye bags area. My sister also developed yung gaya sayo, hives and all... when she was about 20 na rin.
tj_brewed July 6th, 2006, 08:13 PM really dvocity? so that means na possibleng allergic ako sa Sweet and Sour Pork? huhuhuhuh :( too bad..its my favorite dish pa naman...sya nga pala, www.davaoportal.net ur familiar with that link?
@globaldavao! ei good morning bro! i heard SAMAL will be developed into an special ecozone.
mydavaocity July 6th, 2006, 08:18 PM baka naman a certain ingredient lang... kasi yung sa mefenamic/ibuprofen allergy ko... i concluded na dun talaga coz it happened twice. at first nga kala ko coz of something else pero when it happened again, dun ko na lang nalaman. ate ko naman sa shrimps, crabs, etc. maybe you can be tested for allergens to know exactly pero masakit yun kasi tutusukan ka ng iba't-ibang substances. like rows and rows of injections on your arm or back.
sorry sa OT. anyway, thanks sa tip abt the jobs.
mydavaocity July 6th, 2006, 08:24 PM I applied pala sa Mynd last week kasi I saw and ad sa newspaper pero they're taking a long time processing the applicants kasi sobrang dami yata ng nag-apply.
tj_brewed July 6th, 2006, 08:29 PM ic...have u tried GCOM na rin? Ive heard there are other local call centers jan (Davao based) pero maliit lang yung operations nila.. an average of 20 seats yata..Im not sure of the names of these companies....There are several firms din jan na into Medical Transcription. check mo rin.....
you are into web development diba? have u tried www.kwikrelease.com or sa HubPort din?
