Davao's Bangoyan snatches WBC belt from Kenyan pug
By Charles Raymond A. Maxey and Marianne Saberon-Abalayan

WITH blood dripping from a cut over his left eye, Balweg "Davao Hitman" Bangoyan of the Philippines fought his way to a unanimous five-round technical decision over Sande Otieno of Kenya to capture the World Boxing Council (WBC) international super bantamweight crown before a roaring crowd Friday night at the Rizal Memorial Colleges (RMC) Gym.

Post your comments on the sinking of MV Princess of the Stars

The 21-year-old Bangoyan won via the judges' scorecard, 48-45, after the bout was stopped by referee Bruce McTavish at 1:32 of the fifth round upon the advise of ringside physician Dr. Edgar Tan.

When the decision was announced declaring Bangoyan the winner, the highly appreciative crowd let out a rousing applause, hailing the new WBC champion from Davao.

It may not be a convincing win, but Bangoyan got the job done to make a name of himself and put Davao in the world boxing map.

"I'm happy for Balweg for winning the WBC international super bantamweight crown. At least we already have a world champion from Jose Abad Santos. He is now Davao's new idol," said an ecstatic Jose Abad Santos Alexander Wangkay, Bangoyan's handler who co-promoted the championship showdown.

"Garbo gyud ni sa Davao ang pagdaug ni Bangoyan. Tanang mga Dabawenyos nalipay sa iyang pagdaug (His victory is Davao's pride. Every Dabawenyo rejoices in his triumph)," Davao City Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte said after awarding the golden trophy to the new world champion.

Bangoyan praised Otieno after the fight, saying the Kenyan proved to be a tough nut to crack.

"Malakas ang resistensiya ni Otieno. Nakarekober parin siya matapos ko siyang ma-knockdown. Naapektuhan talaga ako sa sugat ko (He's got good resistance, recovering from that knockdown. My cut really affected me)," Bangoyan said after the fight.

Bangoyan highlighted his victory with a stunning first round knockdown, sending Otieno to the floor from four-punch combination.

Otieno got up immediately and managed to survive the round.

In the second, Otieno got active and engaged Bangoyan in a slugfest. But, the Kenyan was deducted a point after the round for a headbutt that opened a big cut above Bangoyan's left eye.

"He (Bangoyan) can still be developed. He's got a lot to learn. This is just is his first international fight. There is still much going for him, he's only 21. I'm very happy that we now have a world champion from Davao," Wangkay said.

Paul Otieno, trainer-coach of Otieno, was dismayed by the outcome of the fight. He even questioned the decision of Dr. Tan when he stopped the bout after fifth round.

2 soft drink bottlers seek permit to operate in Davao aquifer area

October 11, 2008 10:46 am by pna
DAVAO CITY, Oct. 11 — The Davao City Council is looking seriously at the application of two companies seeking permit to operate bottling plants in Barangay Binugao, Toril district, identified as water resource areas and sitting atop the aquifer of the city.

SMI Corporation and Interveb Corporation are seeking reclassification into heavy industrial zones of their properties for plants for bottled water and soft drinks operations.

The applications were heard during a hearing last Tuesday by the committee on housing, rural and urban development chaired by councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling.

At the hearing, Rey Chavez, head of the Davao City Water District (DCWD) engineering division, said the water district is interposing no objection to the project being outside of the DCWD area of operations.

But Chavez bared water extraction from the aquifer by both private and public wells currently stand at 5,000 liters per second or a mere 2,000 liters below the threshold of 7,000 liters per second.

The bottling projects are water resource-intensive and will be digging wells for the bottling and operational needs.

Chavez’s position appears to downplay present efforts by DCWD to tap surface water in Panigan and Tamugan rivers in Calinan district to ease pressure on the aquifer, where the water firm pumps out water for the city’s needs.

Chavez also said the surface water project is also prodded by DCWD’s long-term program to raise water supply through cost-efficient strategies through the gravity-powered system in the Panigan-Tamugan project.

He explained the project will save huge expenditures for electricity in pumping out water for distribution from its water wells in the Barangay Dumoy aquifer.

The applicants assured the aquifer would be spared from contamination with the companies setting into place elaborate water treatment systems approved by the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR). (PNA)

Continuing trend
October 10, 2008 — Peter

After the successful construction of two mid-rise condominium units near SM Davao by the Consunji Group and the groundbreaking of Filinvest’s similar project in the area at Ecoland, the trend of mid-rise condo projects in Davao is growing.

Consunji is constructing several mid-rise units at its property just at the back of City Hall in downtown Davao.

The other day, the Davao City Investment Incentive Board, where I sit, approved the application of Linmarr Towers for its six-storey Building A condo in Bo. Obrero. The P167 million project of the Bangayan Group involves the construction of 110 units of studios and two and three bedroom units. Two other buildings are also planned at its 1.1 hectare property along Porras St.

At the Ayala Center project at the Floriendo property at Bajada, mid-rise condos are also in the planning board.

Because of its vast lands, Davaoenos like to live in sprawling bungalow or two-storey type houses where they maintain front and backyard gardens. Now, there is increasing interests in condo living where occupants prefer to be near their offices, shopping areas, medical facilitities or schools for their kids.

The market of these condo units are split three ways - locals, overseas Filipino workers, and foreigners.

Contrast
October 11, 2008 — Peter

We have seen the closure of banks, financial institutions and insurance companies the past several months in the US, Europe and lately Japan as a result of the global financial crisis.

The opposite, however, is occuring here in Davao. Almost a new bank branch is being opened here every month. Yesterday, it was the First Consolidated Bank based in Tagbilaran, Bohol, which started operations at its sprawling center at Sasa. Last August, I also represented Mayor Rody Duterte at the opening of the East-West Bank infront of high-end shop Chimes along Sales St. in Chinatown. East-West Bank is opening another branch at Matina just off Ateneo very soon.

Last month, the long idle Madrazo property infront of Central Bank finally gave way to a new bank branch of Philtrust.

Davao is not immune to the financial crisis and the impending global recession but it is faring well, according to NEDA.

The market of these condo units are split three ways - locals, overseas Filipino workers, and foreigners.

Based on the turn out of sales sa mga condos sa Davao, the market are actually split in four ways - locals, OFWs, foreigners, plus the rich people and successful businessmen from other provinces in Mindanao. Just recently, we had another condo inquiry from Misamis Oriental. Her husband just arrived from abroad and they are looking on investing into real estate properties. They are planning to invest in One Oasis Davao. :okay:

Big global event to draw world leaders to Manado
sunstar.com/davao

DIRECT flights to Manado from Davao City are expected to balloon many times over in May next year during the 2009 World Ocean Conference to be held in that northeastern Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

Considered the world's biggest event to take place next year in Indonesia, the global conference is expected to draw some 10,000 international delegates from all over the world, accompanied by over 2,000 journalists, according to Peter Lavina, chair of the committee on trade, commerce, and industry of the City Council.

Lavina revealed that presidents of the world's most powerful nations like the US, China, Russia, Japan, Great Britain, Australia; heads of states; kings; queens; as well as top scientists and environmentalists will tackle wide-ranging topics on saving the world's oceans, protecting coral reefs, climate change, pollution, disappearing forests, and global warming.

Lavina, one of the most active advocates of the direct Davao-Manado flight, urged the government and various industry groups here to prepare for this big global event in Manado which is only an hour's flying time from this southern city.

"Let's take full advantage of this rare global event -- it's going to attract thousands of international delegates and many of them will use this shorter, direct route from Davao to Manado instead of the longer route from Jakarta," Lavina said.

Direct flights from Davao to Manado was revived three months ago after the Indonesian airline Sriwijaya Air, which used to ply the route, gave up its operations late last year due to lack of air passengers. A new Indonesian airline, Wings Air, took over the suspended route and revived the air traffic between the two neighboring cities. The route was established some years ago by the economic grouping of BIMP-Eaga (Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines- East Asean Growth Area).

Trade Undersecretary Merly Cruz said this is exactly what the BIMP-Eaga group anticipated when the four countries agreed to establish direct air and sea linkages with each other to promote trade, tourism, and investments in this part of the world.

"With these direct air and sea links, we're now seeing the growth of more trade deals, more tour packages, more investments, and more venture partnerships between the four Asean countries," said Cruz, who also chairs the BIMP-EAGA Senior Ministers Meetings in the region.

Daniel Jacobs, Wings Air district engineer for Manado, said more and more passengers from Davao are filling up the seats of their 52-seater jetprop aircraft which flies weekly to Manado.

"Our flights are mostly fully booked -- if we can't fill up the seats, we can always take in more cargo," Jacobs told reporters.
--------------------------------:):):)

the city tourism officials should take advantage of this big event, since this could draw and attract tourists...manada is starting to be known globally and davao too...the two cities are both fortunate to have this direct air route...

good morning davao...:)

Davao City call centers are
not desperate, says exec

BY JUDY QUIROS
Business Process Outsourcing executives have exempted Davao City call centers from undergoing the so-called “desperation syndrome”.

Many call centers in Manila and Cebu City as reflected in print advertisements, are offering numerous incentives including a four-week vacation leave in a year, huge signing bonus and big hiring rates to call center agents out of desperation to keep them from quitting their jobs.

The Call Center Association of the Philippines has reported that the Philippines suffered a 60 to 80 percent turnover rate, the highest turnover among call centers worldwide. It said that the rate is more than the normal turnover rate of 30 to 40 percent.

Cyber City chief Nannete Del Mundo, however, said call centers in Davao City are not offering extraordinary incentives since the attrition rate of call agents is not fast.

She said the salary rate of call center agents in the city ranging from P8,000 to P14,000 monthly and more is sufficient to compensate their labor.

She also said that she is not aware of the CCAP report. She, however, expressed the belief that if there is such a report, maybe the call centers being surveyed are those from congested cities such as Manila and Cebu where there are huge increases in the number of call centers.

“Davao call centers are not desperate,” 611 Call Center of the JIB Career Center executive Arlene Ozoa for her part said, when asked to react on the issue.

She said it is the call of the human resource department of a call center to establish measures how to keep their call center agents from leaving their positions for other jobs due to many reasons among which are boredom, pressure and stress due to lack of sleep. Most call agents are on graveyard shift that starts from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m..

Ozoa said some call centers are providing relaxation packages to call agents during off hours such as spa or karaoke singing session to refresh themselves from hours of stressful work.

She confirmed that most call agents have to adjust their body cycle to the nature of their job where they have to stay until the wee hours dawn the following day in those narrow computer cubicles.

She also dismissed reports that call center operators prefer a fast turnover of call agents as a strategy to maintain enthusiastic and highly motivated customer service at low cost.

------------------------------------------:):)

Php 8,000 - Php 14,000, do you think this is enough? do you think the reason why davao is not offering those kind of incentives because they got a lot of resources/agents? do you think manila and cebu are offering those incentives because they lack resources? IMO, the salary isn't enough!

Php 8,000 - Php 14,000, do you think this is enough? do you think the reason why davao is not offering those kind of incentives because they got a lot of resources/agents? do you think manila and cebu are offering those incentives because they lack resources? IMO, the salary isn't enough!

Based on the standard of living in Davao City? The salary is enough for a non-married, single individual. And even higher than those working with other industries (banking, retail, etc).

By the way, that is just the basic salary. In a contact center set up, on top of the basic salary are other incentives such as travel allowance, meal allowance, attendance bonus, performance incentives, night diff, and other account's based incentives. :okay:

I believe that the reason why Davao contact centers are that confident and aint offering such incentives is because of the less competition or the small number of contact centers operating in the city compared to the number of contact centers operating in Cebu and Manila.

Syempre, if maliit lang ang options ng mga contact center professionals, they dont have enough options to transfer to. Unlike in Cebu and Manila na more than a hundred na ang mga contact center operators giving employees the option to transfer to whichever may offer them a higher salary with more perks. :okay:

But I believe na once dumami ang centers sa Davao, same scenario that is happening in Cebu and Manila will also be evident in Davao City. :okay: Which is a bad thing for employers but for me a good thing for employees coz they will be empowered to choose kung san tlga sila magwowork. And this will make the employers to proactively improve their compensation packages kc magkakacompetition na sila sa pagkuha ng mga qualified contact center professionals.

All-in-one coffee shop named Bogser's (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/static/dav/2008/10/13/bus/all.in.one.coffee.shop.named.bogser.s.html)
By Grace L. Plata

IMAGINE a white house with a comfy living room, a coffee shop with the crew at your beck and call, a wi-fi connection and piped in jazz music.

Nice huh?

But wait, there's more. It also has a boutique, a movie viewing room, a business center, a bar and a mini music hall in the backyard.

Not for real? Well, go and visit Bogser's Coffee House at Central Park Subdivision in Bangkal, Davao City and see for yourself.

The actual home of real estate broker and musician Jaime "Bogs" Serrano, the house is fascinating hodgepodge of sorts.

Hailing from Davao Oriental, Serrano left the Philippines for the United States in 1985 and has found his niche as a real estate broker in Las Vegas.

"I always come and go because I miss it here. My family is based in the States but I still come home about twice a year. Matagal ko na ring plan itong house. I had the concept about 10 years ago pa," Serrano said.

He said Bogser's is really meant to be a "tambayan" sort of place where friends and families can relax after work.

"It's for people who want to meet up but not stay out too late, young professionals mostly who want to relax a bit before heading home. I'd like it to be a place where modern business people meet," he said.

Bogser's coffee concoctions are all made from imported ingredients he brought home from the US, but are affordable.

The place also serves pasta and homemade spicy chicken wings, delectable sandwiches, rice meals and steak.

For those who want to shop, the boutique within the house sells imported clothing such as jeans and blouses as well as scents and accessories.

The house's viewing room is also available for meetings with provision for Powerpoint presentations or video shows for clients.

"We have fax machines, photocopiers, computer and printer for easy use of clients if they have a meeting here," Serrano said.

Serrano's own real estate firm, Mineplus International Plus Real Estate, also has its office at the right side of the house.

"We can give you advice on properties in the Philippines and abroad as well as on investments," Serrano said.

Then after meetings, they can opt to stay at the backyard listening to jazz played by Serrano and a bunch of his friends.

Bogser's is open daily, from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight, to satisfy your craving for a smooth brew of cool jazz and warm friends.

In spite of the global economic crisis and amidst the crash of the world's markets....

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk97/tj_brewed2/DavaoVisitJune2008/DSC01098.jpg

And we're giving God all the glory! I believe that when a city puts God first, everything will follow through. I believe that's one of the secrets behind Davao City's sustainable economic growth and development. And I'm thankful that this is not only evident in our city but in other cities in the country as well!

Bakit unique? eheheheh kc eto lang ang napuntahan ko na Chinatown na instead of maraming chinese restos and shops, puro hardware and mga banks. During Chinese New Year celebrations, walang fireworks dito or firecrackers, kc banned sya sa city natin, yet our Tsinoys enjoy such celebrations through dances and cheers. :okay: Eto yung Chinatown na u wont feel alienated. Hmmm..let's tour some of the malls in the city. First stop, SM City Davao.

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk97/tj_brewed2/DavaoVisitJune2008/DSC01196.jpg

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk97/tj_brewed2/DavaoVisitJune2008/DSC01195.jpg

http://i278.photobucket.com/albums/kk97/tj_brewed2/DavaoVisitJune2008/DSC01194.jpg

One thing that I like with this mall is that, although it's not as big as Mall of Asia, Cebu's Northwing, or SM North Edsa's The Block - the crowd is comparable to those visiting the high end SM malls mentioned above.

It's a known fact that SM is a pang masa na mall or a mall for everyone. Few years ago nga lang nagstart magchange ng image ang SM through adding or constructing malls that cater to a higher end market. However, when SM City Davao opened its doors in the city years ago, most of the shoppers na nagfoflock dito are those na from the A and B markets.

Kahit na palipat pa siya nang internet cafe, yung ISP niya mag reflect pa rin kung saan ang lugar.

If a DSL subscriber, mas lalong madali dahil static ang IP address.

We're not as anonymous as we think in the virtual world.

OT: DSL subscriber yes...net cafe user, medyo mahirap...tapos, if you block one net cafe because of 1 user, you block all users from that cafe. :D

city hall building is for the executive branch while the sangguniang panlunsod building is for the legislative branch. usually nasa iisang building lang nakahouse yan sila lahat, but in the case of davao and tagum city, ginawan nila ng separate building ang both branches. sa city hall nakahouse ang mayor, admin, exec. secretary, legal office, etc. while sa SP naman ang vice mayor, city councilors and other offices.

Bogser's is open daily, from 5 p.m. to 12 midnight, to satisfy your craving for a smooth brew of cool jazz and warm friends.

i dunno if it's just me, but i hate the name of the coffee shop

Peter Laviña (http://ptlavina.wordpress.com/2008/10/10/continuing-trend/)

Lolz. I think we are all part of the coffee culture of Davao. Funny because I never drink coffee, yet I am fond of going to coffee shops.

The coffee culture in Davao has evolved considerably that even non-coffee drinkers are also hooked up to the culture. And with the way things are going, I believe not even 200 coffee shops in the city would be enough to saturate the market. If you goys are keen observers, pansinin ninyo na kahit tanghaling tapat, talagang may tao in any given coffee shop at any given day. Panisinin nyo.
