MANILA, Philippines—While big banks around the world are drowning in a sea of bad debts, this Filipino will soon be swimming in an ocean of cold cash.

Holding the ticket with the numbers 42-12-46-26-49-19, this still unidentified bettor was the sole winner of Sunday night’s 6/49 SuperLotto draw. The prize—a cool P131,367,521.60.

“For security reasons, we cannot name the winner until he comes forward to claim his prize,” Larry Cedro, the spokesperson of The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO), told the Philippine Daily Inquirer Monday.

Cedro said the winning bettor bought the winning ticket at a lotto outlet on J.P. Laurel Street in Davao City, which was being managed by agent Romeo Ancog.

Aside from the P131-million jackpot, the bettor will also take home an extra amount of more than P100,000 as part of the so-called “low tier prize” earnings, Cedro said.

This extra amount came from the consolation prizes given to bettors who picked three, four and five numbers out of the winning six-number combination, he said.

“This means the winner will also get an additional P117,000 aside from the jackpot,” Cedro said.

He advised the winner not to forget to sign his or her name at the back of the winning ticket to protect his/her claim. The process of claiming the prize at the PCSO Quezon City office only takes 20 minutes, he said.

The announcement that someone had won the SuperLotto draw was one of the few bright spots in a day marked by the gloomy news that several thousands of the country’s huge army of overseas workers might lose their jobs if the current global financial turmoil should worsen.

Sunday’s sales: P79-M

Dreams of winning the lotto spurred ticket sales on Sunday. Total sales that day amounted to P79 million, the PCSO said.

Sales in Luzon hit P62.2 million while those in the Visayas-Mindanao region amounted to P17.1 million.

Cedro pointed out that sales on the day of the lotto draw itself tended to be larger than the preceding days as people rushed in to place their bets in the afternoon, or a few hours before deadline.

“Maybe it’s their (bettors’) superstitious belief or they are just pressed for time,” he said.

Even P3-M means happiness

Cedro said that when he placed his own bet on Sunday morning at a lotto outlet in Bulacan, he didn’t have to suffer long queues.

Naturally, the bigger the prize, the more bettors there are. “People take more chances … they are excited [about winning] the prize,” he said.

But it doesn’t mean that Filipinos are not interested in going for the smaller prizes, say a P3 million jackpot.

“Whenever we interview a winner of that kind of amount, they are still happy to win the prize. It’s just that a high stakes game is much more exciting,” Cedro said.

“It goes to show that despite the economic slump, people are still very much interested. The drive to win is still there,” he added.

Biggest ever

Sunday’s draw marked the third time this year that a winning SuperLotto ticket had brought in a prize in excess of P100 million.

In April, a construction worker from Novaliches, Quezon City, won the biggest 6/49 prize so far—P249 million.

In June, a computer programmer from Abucay, Bataan, and a medical secretary from Cebu City shared the P187 million prize, the second biggest jackpot.

The 6/49 SuperLotto jackpot will return to its initial amount of P16 million for Thursday night’s draw, Cedro said.

Job prospects await Davao Region residents in trade expo

DAVAO CITY — Residents of Davao Region will be given an opportunity to seek employment with at least 75 foreign and domestic employment agencies and companies joining a jobs fair next week.

The Davao Trade Expo 2008 on Oct. 23-25 will mainly feature the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry.

Conrado T. Hernaez, Jr., executive director of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said 25 participating companies are into recruiting for foreign employment.

He noted the financial crisis that hit the West has provided the employment opportunities in the BPO sector as foreign companies train their sights into cheaper operations abroad.

An industry source, who declined to be identified, said that while contact center companies are paying at most P500 per day to local agents, American counterparts are receiving up to $300 for the same work load.

This thread, like blogs, serves as a valid source of info. Perfect example jan is ang mga photos used by Ayala Land during their presentation about Abreeza - those were from this thread, or the information about SM Lanang 2, and even the photo of Playa Azalea being circulated around online blogs, etc etc. SSC, the entire website and its subthreads, had also been featured in other national and business dailies. SSC Cebu had been featured several times in The Freeman. SSC Davao had been featured in Mindanao Times too. So my point is this, although trolls may try to provoke us, let's keep our cool. Those who grew up in the city will remember the old PTA grounds.

It was used long time ago as a venue for all kinds of sports activities especially those of the interschool competitions. It was used also as a venue for the agricultural fairs of the city especially during “Araw ng Dabaw” and the “Kadayawan Festival” as well as many other events of the city.
In the past, there were proposals about how we could improve the PTA ground to maximize its usage for public interest. Rumors implicated that the area would even be sold to private entities that would develop it into a mall or convert it into an economic enterprise for a pay.

But I remember the maverick Mayor Rody Duterte said that if we would give in to the private sector and businessmen the poor people may not be able to use it because everything would be based on monetary considerations and we must remember the fact that the area was owned by the people of the city.

But the mayor never lost track of his focus and his commitment to the people - that everybody would have an opportunity to use any government property such as the PTA ground. And so, the mayor decided without any hesitation that the PTA grounds be turned into the People’s park. And as part of the team of the mayor in the city council, my colleagues and I supported him, and that is what we have now, the People’s park.

Now the park, like the old PTA, is free for everybody to enjoy. So many people, from the city of Davao and even other provinces have been coming to this park. Now even my two-year-old son Miguel can even stay at people’s park, and I know that my Miguel is very happy every time he is in People’s park - running and playing as with other kids. Old and young are visitors of the park. People from the barangays have also been given the opportunity to see the park through the “Inday Duterte Suroy Ta Program.” People coming from far flung areas of the city were given free ride in coming to the city and in going back to the their barangays.

When I expressed to the mayor that the park was being patronized by a lot of people, he said that our decision to make the PTA into People’s park is one of the best decisions ever made by the city government. And we never failed our people. In my 17 years of public service, I’ve served the people under different mayors, but indeed, Mayor Rody is outstanding for his own maverick and pro-people style of leadership. Even the naming of the park was made in close consultation with the people of Davao. The people of Davao are lucky to have his kind of leadership. He is the kind of person that deserves to be emulated.

From one person’s dream to have a good city comes the realization that extra ordinary things do happen - the People’s park, the peace and order of the city which resulted in several awards, including the recognition that is was the most livable city in Asia, the cleanest city awardee of my school- the Asian Institute Management.

By believing in ourselves and in our institutions, we, the “Dabawenyos,” can do it. And we have to announce to the whole world to believe in us, as a city and as a people.

Fairness and objectivity of governance is critical of the Davao city success. Davao city is harvesting awards brought about by unity and cooperation among its people. This was made possible because of the good leadership by our mayor. Indeed, he is a good model for anybody who wants to aspire to be the president of the republic. He is a guy who delivers result without fanfare.

The executive department has submitted to the City Council its proposed Supplemental Budget No. 2 and it is now under deliberation by the Committee on Finance headed by Councilor Myrna Dalodo Ortiz.

Major sources for the additional budget is the Landbank loan of P114 million against the internal revenue differential for calendar years 2001 and 2004, reversions of P99 million and new IRA shares of P9.8 million.

The big ticket appropriations are personnel services that include the 10 percent salary increase effective July 2008 - P28 million; cash gift - P42 million; and adjustments in contract of services - P55.5 million.

Peace and order at P30 million; garbage hauling services at P23 million; streetlighting at P11 million and canal and drainage at P10 million eat up most of the other services.

Other interesting items include P5.4 million for the “wireless wide area network” at the City Treasurer’s Office; P3.5 million for the Kadayawan; P2.5 million for tourism promotions; P1.8 million additional gasoline at the City Council; and P800,000 for the newly created Local Housing Board.

The committee hearing on the proposed budget is open to the public for those interested to know more.

Those who grew up in the city will remember the old PTA grounds.

It was used long time ago as a venue for all kinds of sports activities especially those of the interschool competitions. It was used also as a venue for the agricultural fairs of the city especially during “Araw ng Dabaw” and the “Kadayawan Festival” as well as many other events of the city.
In the past, there were proposals about how we could improve the PTA ground to maximize its usage for public interest. Rumors implicated that the area would even be sold to private entities that would develop it into a mall or convert it into an economic enterprise for a pay.

Pero napansin ninyo na arangkada pa rin ang mga construction sa Davao despite the crisis? At some point naisip ko na ititigil lahat ng mga ongoing and soon-to-start projects. But I was proven wrong. Even local investors such as Bangayan (for Linmarr Towers) and the owner of Central Park Hotel are on the go, seemingly oblivious to the impending global crisis. Can someone explain bakit ganito ang behavior ng investors (local and national alike) towards Davao??? :dunno:

for me. kay worth it investing in davao...and hinog na ang market for this kind of investment sa davao...IMO

Walang halong stir, lahat ng may propensity to buy na nasabihan ko about the Bajada project are all waiting. Ayaw nila bumili sa iba. Hihintayin daw talaga nila kasi tatawid lang Ayala na. And for the same reason mataas ang resell rate. Eh with the proposed condo sa tabi ng flyover buhangin, baka mabawasan pa yung almost certain buyers ng FLI for its Bajada project. Yung location kasi would be a perfect substitute for FLI's kung mag langay-langay sila. Word of advice lang kuya. :)

as per latest from a sales associate ng fli. d na daw condotel but condo units na daw talaga. so all in all there will be 7 mrb condos in one oases.

Bitaw kuya, may tatlo na akong clients na i-refer sayo for the FLI Bajada condo. Pang apat ako kung sakali. Dapat talaga bilisan na ng FLI. Kasi parang interested din ako dun sa sinabi ni Govinda. It's a perfect substitute for FLI's project.
