but don't worry, SB is coming soon. :)

The Economy

Property development expected to drive Davao’s growth
DAVAO CITY — The construction industry expects to be a growth driver for the Davao Region despite the threat of a economic slowdown, city-based architects told reporters here earlier this week.

Francis Gerard S. Hidalgo of the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) said the current property development boom in this city could even spill out of the Davao Region next year.

UAP will be holding its 17th national conference here Oct. 23-25.

Agatha Ellen S. Valencia, president of the UAP, said she is "optimistic" that construction activities here will go on even if remittances coming from overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) have slowed.

Mr. Hidalgo took note that major construction players from Metro Manila have been coming to the city to take advantage of the boom. He cited Abreeza, a 10-hectare joint venture between Anflo Management and Investment Corp. and Ayala Land Inc.

Robinsons Gateway Davao is set to open early next year, even as Gaisano Mall of Davao plans to expand its floor space to at least 200,000 square meters, from the current 130,000 square meters.

There are also small shopping malls being built in nearby areas, such as in Panabo and Tagum cities in Davao del Norte.

There were reports that the Gaisano Group is interested in setting up malls in these two nearby cities.

The boom has been driven not only by mall development but also by residential projects, said Jose Joaquin P. Mendoza, another official of the organization. He said a big housing project is being developed in Kidapawan City, North Cotabato despite conflict in some areas in the province and in nearby Maguindanao.

Although OFWs are one of the biggest housing markets, the architects said local investors have also been on the lookout for new properties.

A problem, however, is the rise in prices of construction supplies like cement. Mr. Hidalgo said because of the increase in prices of construction materials, construction cost per square-meter has risen from about P15,000 last year to about P25,000 this year. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

Meron din kami sa Madapo, Toril, Talomo, Lumondao pero mostly collection offices or major pumps... madaming branch ang DCWD. soon on Catalunan Grande.

Brutus’ wins award in Hawaii

A FILIPINO film with musical scoring of Davao pride Joey Ayala bagged the NETPAC award during the 28th Louis Vuitton Hawaii International Film Festival.

Brutus is about two Mangyan children traveling the Lisap River in order to transport illegal logs. Along the way, they meet a rebel leader who is being tracked down by the military.
Directed by Tara Illenberger, it stars Yul Servo and Ronnie Lazaro. The Mangyan children are played by Timothy Mabalot and Rhea Medina.
The awarding ceremony of the Hawaiian film fest took place last October 14 at the Sheraton Waikiki Hotel. The other Filipino films that are part of the Louis Vuitton Hawaii IFF are Ron Morales’ Santa Mesa and Ellen Ongkeko-Marfil’s Boses. The Philippine-US-Iceland co-production The Amazing Truth About Queen Raquela is also part of the Asian showcase of the said film fest.
The NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asian Cinema) award is given at select international film festivals to promote Asian cinema by spotlighting exceptional films and discovering new talents.
Last July, Brutus bagged the Special Jury Award in Cinemalaya for “depicting culture collisions in the context of environmental exploitation.” It also earned the Best Supporting Actor award for Yul Servo, the Best Cinematography award for Emilio “Jay” Abello, and the Best Musical Score award for Joey Ayala.

and junax, for me the trip is roughly straightway from davao city to destination without having to go through traffic bottlenecks at city boundaries, stopovers along the way, and long and winding routes. cuts travel time significantly with fast seacraft. add to it, road safety. this seatravel is more convenient imo

Francisco

CWD insists stand over
Interbev’s bottling plant
BY JUDY QUIROS

Asking for a production assessment fee for the construction of a bottling plant in Lower Binugao, Toril District, Davao City by soft drink firm, Interbev Philippines Inc. is legal, the Davao City Water District (DCWD) maintained.

DCWD spokesperson Imelda Magsuci in an interview with Mirror yesterday said DCWD will proceed with their stand despite the opposition of the said firm.

City Council floor leader Danilo Dayanghi-rang was quick to defend Interbev Philippines, Inc. as he questioned DCWD’s stand in last Tuesday’s regular session.

Dayanghirang in his privilege speech hit DC-WD saying that its move tends to drive investors away.

Magsuci said DCWD could not dictate Dayang-hirang on whatever his position is on the issue.

Nevertheless, “we cannot question the law,” Magsuci said.

She said DCWD knows its position and is no fool to exact a production assessment fee without legal basis.

She said the production assessment fee is a standard procedure provided under P.D. 198 known as Provincial Water Utilities Act of 1973.

The production assessment fee is based on Section 39 of P.D. 198 where water districts can compel a company to pay said fee if their company is within the service areas of water utility company.

“Failure to pay said assessment shall constitute an invasion of the waters of the district and shall entitle this district to an injunction and damages pursuant to Section 31.”

The production assessment fee is fixed at 68 centavos per cubic meter as set by the National Water Resources Board.

Magsuci said DCWD issued a certificate of no opposition to the application of Interbev Philippines Inc. for a water permit for the its water wells in Lower Binugao, Toril because DCWD cannot as yet supply the water requirements of Interbev in the absence of pipelines connecting to the DCWD water facilities as provided in Section 31 of P.D. 198.

DCWD’s stand on the issue is also based on a Supreme Court ruling in the case of Dasmariñas Water District vs. Monterey Foods Corporation, G. R. No. 175550, September 17, 2008, she said.

juneau is composed of two cities kaya malaki...here:

The City and Borough of Juneau (pronounced /ˈdʒuːnoʊ/) is a unified municipality located on the Gastineau Channel in the panhandle of the U.S. state of Alaska. It has been the capital of Alaska since 1906, when the government of the then-Alaska Territory was moved from Sitka.

The municipality unified in 1970 when the City of Juneau merged with the City of Douglas and the surrounding borough to form the current home rule municipality.

The area of Juneau is larger than that of Rhode Island or Delaware and almost as large as the two states combined. Downtown Juneau is nestled at the base of Mount Juneau and across the channel from Douglas Island. As of the 2000 census, the City and Borough had a population of 30,711. The U.S. Census Bureau's 2007 population estimate for the City and Borough was 30,690.[1]

Oil exploration
THE Philippines, like other oil-importing nations, needs to concentrate in the years ahead on developing its abundant mineral resources, including oil which is “king” in both developing and industrialized countries.

In fact, this impoverished Southeast Asian nation faces a brighter economic outlook following the success of the Galoc oil well project in Palawan that can produce 17,000 to 20,000 barrels of oil a day.

The operator of the Galoc oil well, Nido consortium, spent at least $120 million for the development of the project which is projected to fill in six percent of the country’s daily oil requirements of 300,000 barrels.

Another reason for the optimism is that there are 32 other oil exploration sites in Cebu, Davao, Agusan, and the Central Luzon basin. With the number of ongoing oil explorations, the country hopes to become self-sufficient in 10 years.

It has to embark on a tremendous campaign to tap its rich natural resources, including oil and natural gas.

And now a group of lawmakers wants the government to grant more fiscal incentives to private firms to encourage them to join the massive search for oil as part of efforts to reduce dependence on fossil fuel.

“Definitely, we should give our full support to this very good endeavor by granting more fiscal incentives to oil companies that would tandem with the government in finding possible rich sources of oil,” said Leyte Rep. Ferdinand Martin Romualdez.

House Speaker Prospero Nograles Jr. said “of cource, (we are open to more incentives) because we want to encourage them to venture into more oil explorations. This is what we need.”

For his part, Laguna Rep. Justin Marc Chipeco said the government must also ensure that Juan dela Cruz benefits from these oil explorations. “We just hope that the discovery of oil sources will have a trickle- down effect on ordinary Filipinos,” he said.

Certainly, private firms engaged in developing the nation’s mineral resources want fiscal incentives and other benefits.

If more oil fields begin producing, it is likely that the country may enter the world market as a major producer of fossil fuel. It is not an impossible dream since the country is very rich in natural resources.

Corporate News
Phoenix petroleum seeks P750 million credit facility

The Board of Directors of listed Davao-based oil player Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. has approved the authority to obtain, negotiate and secure a P750 million omnibus term credit facility from a syndicate of banks which includes Security Bank Corp., Land Bank of the Philippines and Robinsons Savings Bank, for its expansion programs.

In a disclosure to the stock exchange yesterday, Phoenix Petroleum said that the omnibus term credit facility is intended to allow the company to avail of term loan of up to P150 million and LC/TR (letter of credit/trust receipt) facility of up to P600 million.

The company said it intends to use the loan for its capital expenditures and additional working capital in line to support the company’s expansion program.

Phoenix Petroleum is engaged in the business of trading refined petroleum products, lubricants and other chemical products, operation of oil depots and storage facilities, and allied services, mainly in Southern Philippines. Its products and services are distributed and marketed under the "Phoenix Fuels Life" trademark.

Phoenix opened its first station in Marikina City in Metro Manila early this month as it aggressively moves to expand nationwide.

Phoenix retail service stations operate in major parts of Mindanao with a total of 72 as of September. By the end of 2008, 12 Phoenix stations have opened in Luzon. By the end of 2012, Phoenix expects to have a total of 400 retail stations opened.

Phoenix Petroleum also signed an agreement for a possible joint venture with Nexum Energy Corp. to develop bio-ethanol in the country. The ethanol plant will have a capacity of 70 million liters per year, using cassava as raw material. The understanding is signed last month.

Phoenix Petroleum Philippines, Inc. went public last year and is the first petroleum company to list in the Philippine Stock Exchange after the passage of the 1998 Downstream Oil Industry Deregulation Act.

Jaraula said this is the biggest investment of the company in Mindanao having an initial budget of P4.5 Billion Pesos. As confirmed by Cebu Holdings Inc, these are the ongoing Ayala projects in Mindanao:

Davao - Abreeza, an Ayala Mall

Cagayan de Oro - Alegria Hills, residential project

This confirmation is consistent with what is posted in the official website of Ayala Land. Beyond this is no longer a fact. Hope that local government officials in the future will not put words into the mouth of investors.

hayaan nalang natin yan sila.. ang importante is ayala has chosen davao among others - clearly an indication of how much potential these investors see in our city. if ayala plans to put up another mall in CDO ("if" pa lang naman ) then that would make two ayala centers in mindanao. galing di ba?

pero by that time.. to be realistic nga lang naman.. siguro tatlo na ang ayala centers sa visayas and apat na outside metro manila. everything is possible but as to when? nobody knows :)

Saturday, October 18, 2008 at 9:12 AM Posted by Charles

Davao Museum of History and Ethnography will present Celebrating Ginum: A Festival for a Bountiful Harvest, a satellite exhibit of the nationwide Amorsolo Retrospective on October 23 at the museum’s Carlos O. Dominguez Gallery.

Celebrating Ginum will be the thirteenth satellite exhibit to open among 20 Amorsolo Retrospective satellite exhibits nationwide and will highlight Ginum, the pre-planting festival of the Bagobo held annually. The exhibit will drive a connection between the Bagobo community’s expression of Filipino communities’ shared aspiration of a bountiful harvest as “Fruit Harvesting”, which will accompany the exhibit.

The satellite exhibit is a joint presentation of the Metropolitan Museum of Manila and the Davao Museum for the “His Heart, Our Heart” Amorsolo Retrospective. The Amorsolo Retrospective which opened last September 26 at the Metropolitan Museum of Manila is aimed to take another look at Philippine National Artist Fernando Amorsolo and his fruitful life in the arts through a four-month multi-venue exhibition of his finest works.

The satellite exhibit will run until January 13, 2009.

Why Samal Island doesn't want to be the next Boracay

October 16, 2008 2:48 pm by pna

By Aurelio A. Pena

http://img162.imageshack.us/img162/905/5364372822da8fe768bkl2tn7.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

ISLAND GARDEN CITY OF SAMAL, Oct.16 — In many ways, this hidden island of Samal in the South is much better than the world-famous Boracay Island in the central Philippines.

This is what most tourism stakeholders here like to think, especially Araceli Ayuste, tourism council president of the Island Garden of Samal, the official name of this island-city.

"We don't want this island to become the next Boracay because we know it can become much better than Boracay," Ayuste said.

Most islanders like Ayuste don't want to see Samal becoming too crowded and "over-commercialized". A mushrooming of so many beach resorts in Samal is not something many islanders would be happy about.

"As much as possible, we'd like to keep the natural rural setting of Samal, inspite of being a city. We don't like to see our island's natural resources over-exploited by many investors,” says Ayuste who also runs Punta del Sol, a beach resort, one of around 30 resorts in the sword-shaped island surrounded by the deep blue waters of Davao Gulf.

“If Boracay can crow about its kilometric long-white beaches and nothing else, Samal islanders can crow not only about its pristine white beaches, but also its other unique attractions like some of the world's best diving sites, hundreds of underground caves, century-old balete trees, vanishing islands and the world's biggest population of fruit bats,” according to Samal's senior tourism officer Virginia Ibo.

Many foreigners who visited Samal as tourists in the past fell in love with the island and ended up as foreign expats and permanent residents.

"It's astonishing what you can discover in the island. It could be so addicting you'll find yourself hooked to it completely," says William Krelle, 68, who came here as a tourist in the early 80's and found himself today an exporter of seafoods from Davao to Australia.

Besides its white beaches and natural attractions, a German editor cited the proximity of the nearby bustling city of Davao with all its modern telecommunications systems.

"I've never seen any place like this anywhere in the world where you can relax on a white beach on a beautiful island–yet you can still keep in touch with anyone in the world through the internet or my mobile phone," says Ulrich Kronberg, 62, editor-publisher of two German sailboat magazines based in Hamburg.

Kronberg, who married a Samal native and had four children, runs his Hamburg publishing company by internet from the island.

Government trade officials in Davao find it fascinating that a growing number of foreigners who started out as tourists and visitors in the region ended up eventually as investors and traders and helping in the growth of the local economy.

"It's delightful to know how foreigners who came here as tourists begin to like Samal and Davao so much that they ended up falling in love with a local girl, raised their families here and eventually put up their investments here," says OIC regional director Marizon Loreto of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Davao.

This is one good competitive advantage over other places in the country that Loreto can cite about Davao and its nearby island of Samal.

"It's such a blessing for us to have these advantages here that makes these foreigners decide to stay here for good, becoming investors and providing employment for our people here," Loreto said. (PNA)

Pearl Farm: The south’s jewel resort

October 3, 2008 11:45 am by pna

By Lynda B. Valencia

MANILA, Oct. 3 — Pearl Farm Beach Resort which lies in a secluded cove on palm-fringed Samal Island (now known as the Island Garden City of Samal) off the coast of Davao City, is one of the country’s up market today.

The 11-hectare Pearl Farm Beach Resort was once a pearl farm in 1958, the Aguinaldo Pearl Farm, where thousands of white lipped oysters, transported from the Sulu Sea, were cultivated for their pink, white and gold pearls.

“The place is what you call paradise on earth,” said Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano.

It may be an exaggeration, but that is the feeling one gets when he or she sets foot on the island’s pristine and serene beauty.

At the Pearl Farm, one can have the best of both worlds –an exotic and luxurious five-star island resort and at the same time, a resort that is accessible and close to the mainland.

A unique feature of this beautiful resort are the Samal houses patterned after the stilt houses of the seafaring Samal tribe of Sulu. Placed near the entrance of each houses are a jar of water and a coconut dipper which guests may use to wash off the sand after a swim or walk on the beach.

By day, schools of tiny fish frolic between the sturdy poles supporting the houses (the place around the resort is a fish sanctuary). At night, the sound of the waves is soothing aid to slumber.

The resort has 19 air-conditioned Samal houses and six Samal suites. There are 19 hotel-type rooms at the hilltop of Balay I and II. Each room is decorated with the arts and crafts of the tribal people of Mindanao. The ethnic motifs reflect the rich culture and heritage of the indigenous tribes, giving a distinct charm to the resort.

Rooms are built to fit around the island’s graceful contour, each one opening up into a breathtaking view of the calm, blue sea. Nearby is Malipano Island where guests can rent any of the luxury three-bedroom villas built by the resort owner, Don Antonio Floreindo, for each of his children.

What does one do at the resort aside from admiring the view, soaking in the sun, swimming either at pool which spills out into the sea below or at the Davao Gulf, or simply frolicking along the white-sand beaches? Jetskiing, hobbie-cat sailing and scuba diving await the water sports enthusiasts.

The vast unexplored depths of the Davao Gulf offer ample opportunities for scuba diving and underwater photography (the resort has a full-service diving center). Within these waters can be found varied, colorful marine species of the whole Indo-Pacific region.

A favorite spot of divers is the site of two Japanese shipwrecks sunk by the Americans during World War II.

One can simply admire fish ponds stocked with rare aquatic species like the pawikan (giant turtle) and the giant taklobo clams. Or one can take a banca and explore the dazzling coral gardens. For the tennis buffs, there are two tennis courts set amid tropical foliage.

Or just follow the wooden foot bridge and walkways as you leisurely meander through the exotic gardens of the resort where island structures are made of natural materials such as bamboo, wood, rope, stone and coral, blending beautifully with the rest of the landscape.

At the Maranao Pavilion, guests can savor fresh seafoods from the surrounding waters or try any of the succulent exotic fruits which abound in the island city such as bananas, durian, papaya, mangosteen, mangoes and marang. At night, guests may go ballroom dancing.

For a nightcap, one may go to the cozy Parola Bar (named after the local term for lighthouse), which was once a lookout post for strangers who were not welcome on the island, back in the days, when it was still a pearl farm. Amid the relaxing ambiance, guests can unwind with a night of music, drinks and exhilarating conversation, or try a game of chess at the giant chessboard.

The resort has been receiving guests from Europe, Taiwan, Japan and local tourists from Manila and other cities in the Visayas and Mindanao. (PNA)

settling this issue would perhaps be better explained like this - when you have the space go out, if you don't go down. simple analogy for that. most malls here toronto and suburbs have theirs out, saves you money and use it elsewhere.

but if somebody want to try to make and mountain out of a molehill, then he/she doesn't know the economics of it all.
