Shuttle to Eden Nature Park

http://img126.imageshack.us/img126/7366/edenshuttleserviceauu6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

One of the tourist spots here in Davao is Eden Nature Park or simply Eden. I’ve been there several times already and it has also been part of the Davao Food Appreciation Tour.

It’s an hour or so ride coming from the city proper. And it is recommended that you have your own vehicle or rent one when you are going to this great place.

Not anymore…now, going to Eden is easier… with the help of “Eden Sakay Na” where a shuttle service will be waiting for you to bring you to Eden and back.

Ok so here’s how it works:

You need to book you trip to eden beforehand. This is to make sure that you’ll get a seat in the shuttle.

The pick-up point and drop-off point is Matina Town Square (MTS).

Trip Schedules and fares are as follows:

Saturday: P200.00

* Batch 1: MTS to EDEN - 8:30am | EDEN to MTS - 1:30 pm
* Batch 2: MTS to EDEN - 11:00am | EDEN to MTS - 4:00 pm

Sunday: P200.00

* MTS to EDEN - 9:30 am | EDEN to MTS (no specific time)

Weekdays (Mondays to Fridays): P1,500

* Special Trip (roundtrip MTS-EDEN-MTS)

The weekday fare of P1,500 is like renting a van. I think there’s only a few people going to Eden during these days. So if there’s only 3 of you who will be going to Eden, then you’ll have to share the fee. But you’re a group planning to go there on a weekday, then the fare will be less expensive per person. Still, that P1,500 fare is cheap.. coz it will be like renting a van. You can also ask the driver to bring you right in the doorsteps of your home and just give a “tip” to the driver.

This is a great move by Eden. This will boost the number of customers that they have. I just hope they would be able to cater the number of people who would like to go there and not give a “sorry we’re full” answer to their customers.

I hope other tourist destinations here in the Davao Region would offer simillar services.

So for bookings, call 299-1020, 296-0791, 299-0313 | 0918-930-7590 | or email info@edennatureparl.com.ph

Vamos a Comer en Café Marco
By Michael Ebro Dakudao Published : 2008-10-24

Marco Polo Davao’s Café Marco is un-questionably the city’s most exciting place of perpetual culinary motion. Here, innovative offerings of global cuisine change in a twinkling, and one always needs to reorient oneself to changing gastronomic modes; to readjust one’s sincere pleasure of posing as a gourmet. Café Marco, through the able leadership of General Manager Stanley Lau, has been providing people from all walks of life and from extremely varied milieus sumptuous and intricate cuisine of ceremony to escape the mass dictates of taste.

And Café Marco has been pioneering in introducing new ideas and healthier methods of cooking. Its culinary fare is admirably more seductive and diverting than it was in the past years. Never before has it been possible to dine so well in Davao City.

Marco Polo Davao’s modern cuisine has been a great inspiration as well to other establishments. It has given new life to a slumbering profession and has redirected cooking, including ihaw-ihaw and classical Filipino cooking, towards a true refinement. We must be indebted to Marco Polo Davao for the developing renaissance in Davao gastronomy.
So when we got an invite from our “tito Stanley” recently for a press dinner at the Marco Polo Davao’s Marco Café that said Fiesta de España, we were naturally salivating for paella, lengua and callos — because the mere mention of any Spanish dish which includes the ingredients jamon and chorizo makes my knees weak in anticipation. And never mind if we were at the Deck’s “Island Plunge” enjoying Caribbean cuisine three days earlier. That Island Plunge event was my consolation after that infuriating experience in a magazine anniversary celebration which mercilessly made guests wait for hours in a tent in the absence of the party hosts.

Last October 20 at 7:00 p.m. we pleasantly made our way to Marco Polo Davao to celebrate Dia de Hispanidad the Marco Polo way with the city’s talented restaurateur, Señora Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw, as the featured chef.

Señora Gempesaw and family used to run the “El Meson” Spanish Restaurant in Matina which my Spanish food loving family used to frequent. I still remember that we’d almost get drunk from drinking their good Sangria by the time the paella came. Well, in Marco Polo Davao’s Café Marco, one need not have to wait for orders.

Just as soon as GM Stanley Lau, Senora Silvia Gomez-Gempesaw and the loving couple Dr. and Mrs. Julian Rodriguez started the ceremonial slicing of the cochinillo with platitos, we were ushered into the Café Marco which has been transformed into a Spanish restorante. The place was decorated with the predominance of yellow and red colors of the Spanish flag along with authentic framed posters of toreros and flamenco bailerinas. Singers Fernando Gutang and Rita Despojo completed the ambience with their Spanish melodies.

As I seated myself at the long table with Rene and Chona Lizada and m. Magazine’s John Abella, Jammer Lozano and Ian Garcia, we were immediately served plates of mouth-watering tapas consisting of chorizo al diablo, jamon Iberico bellota, embutidos, croquetas, gambas al ajilo, to mention some. The tapas alone were quite good and filling as meals in themselves.

The first course was a lukewarm sopa de ajo. Next came ensalada Catalan which consisted of strips of ham, cheese, tomatoes and onions; and the ensalada de frutas de mar or seafood salad. The waiters were generous in serving the guests Sangria made from Spanish red wine throughout the meal.

For the main course, we were directed to the longest buffet table in town which showcased costillas de cerdo adobadas, patatas estofadas con langostinos, lomo de cerdo con salsa de queso de buffalo, blanqueta de ternera, chicken chilindron, callos, pescado en salsa verde, paella mixta, roast beef asado, among so many others. The carving stations had cochinillo and chuletillas de cordero (roasted rack of lamb).
If you manage to survive the main course, there are still Spanish desserts to contend with to your heart’s desire: espuma de chocolate, natillas, crema Catalana, Macedonia de frutas and surtido de queso. And to think that there are different Spanish menus carefully planned for each day of the Spanish Fiesta celebration.
What an evening to celebrate Marco Polo Davao’s Spanish Day. Muchas gracias, Señores Stanely Lau, Art Boncato, Ron Yulo y Señoritas Meg Sta. Ines y Patty Basa.
For reservations, please call 221-0888 loc. 7222.

Experts offer aid in solving Hedcor, DCWD stand off
By Rizalene P. Acac Published : 2008-10-21

The Energy Conservation Association of the Philippines (ECAP) is willing to fund a “technical workshop” where engineers of both Davao City Water District (DCWD) and Hedcor Inc. can sit down and further discuss the possibility of putting up their projects in the Tamugan-Panigan River.

Christine Rizardo-Omar, coordinator of ECAP-Davao, said the project Chief of Party, Ray T. Goco, has given a go-signal on this proposal over the weekend.

ECAP is a USAID funded project that promotes the conservation of energy as well as the development and utilization of sustainable sources of energy.

Omar, who is a chemical engineer herself, said this dialog will be an avenue for both parties to discuss how these two vital projects can be implemented with the academe and the international experts as consultants.

“They can come here as a group and not as an individual corporation and institution,” she added.

Councilor Leonardo Avila III, chair of the Committee on Environment, who held a hearing yesterday to update stakeholders on the status of the projects said the committee is “open” to the idea.

Avila said he would even send an invitation to Professor Shabaz Khan, the program and the regional coordinator for the Australasian region of Hydrology for Environment Life and Policy under the United Nations Education Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to become one of the experts during the workshop.
Shabaz, a professor of Charles Sturt University (CSU) in Australia came to the city in 2005 at the height of the deliberation of aerial spray ban ordinance.

He said the expertise of the professor who has been a hydrologist for 15 years would be valuable to the city. He added Shabaz is also working on the Twin Basin research project of Murrumbidgee River and Davao River created through the International Network of Basin Organizations, based in France.

Omar said as soon as the city government and stakeholders could finalize the date of the forum, the proposal could immediately be made and submitted to their head office by the first or second week of November.

DCWD spokesperson and Finance manager Imelda Magsuci was, however, adamant about the suggestion. She said it is quite impossible at this stage to change their stance.

Magsuci said the previous alternatives presented by Hedcor did not meet their requirements during their evaluation. She said it would be better if the company backs out now and begin looking for other rivers for its hydroelectric plant.

Last August, the water utility rejected the proposal of Hedcor to transfer its infiltration gallery and water treatment plant from the 400 meter-elevation to the 540 meter-elevation.

The transfer would add another P68.535 million to the construction of the project which according to the pre-feasibility study of the DCWD is P1.3 billion. Magsuci added the proposed position of the facilities would also lessen the cost of electricity.

During the committee hearing, she said they will start the conduct of the feasibility study and are in the process of choosing consultants. The water district aims to complete the project by 2013.

Engr. Mario Luis Jacinto, City Planning and Development Office coordinator, yesterday said if the water utility agrees to the proposal, there will be a 65-percent probability that the recharge area will be affected. The recharge area is where water comes in so that the ground water supply is replenished.

Jacinto said if Hedcor is given favor, the water which will be utilized could no longer pass through the recharge zone in the Tamugan-Panigan rivers with elevation between 535 to 540 feet.
“It is clear that the available flow of the Tamugan and Kidale river will not be sufficient for both Hedcor and DCWD,” he said.

The water district has asked Hedcor to allow them to proceed with its original plan or build a plant before Hedcor’s own hydropower facility. This was rejected by Hedcor.

Rene B. Ronquillo, Hedcor’s chief operating officer, said it will add another P625 million to their estimated construction cost. They have been complaining that the long delay has incurred them losses although he would not divulge the exact amount.

“We might cancel the project but we’re concerned about the coming energy crisis (in Mindanao) like the DoE (Department of Energy) warned,” said Ronquillo, who added that Davao Light and Power Company is already using its plants in Davao City “to correct the voltage” which indicates an abnormal current from the power source.

Hedcor already abandoned the construction of the 7-megawatt hydropower plant in Barangay Suawan, Marilog District because of “rising construction costs, and delays in securing water and environment permits.”

Because there is no PLAN in place. Aren't you saddened by the fact nga ang City Government walay maayong plano sa mga ingon anang mga lugar sa ciudad? That fire is bound to happen again. Firefighting services of the City still won't be able to save properties there. Tan-aw nimo nisulod ba ang City to put some semblance of order in the area? Nanghatag lang siguro sila ug buiding materials. The City could have taken advantage of the situation and put some order before they let the residents build the same fire hazard structures all over again.

Isla Verde is a "political product." That area should have been cleared years ago. Magsaysay Park was developed by the Philippine Tourism Authority with the assurance from the City Government that they will clear Isla Verde because it overlooks the Al Fresco dining areas of the Park's restaurants. Dapat Samal Island ang view. Obviously walay nahitabo. And the Park failed in getting tenants for the restaurants. Kanaway braved the sight of the squatters infront of them but they stopped using the Al Fresco area because of the smell and the sight of Isla Verde. Ultimately, Magsaysay Park failed.
very well said. the legislative council might have been counting the bills passd into laws that supported socioeconomic programs of the city but counting how many could never get into result if after bringing them out to the media, are left lying in the file drawers for keeps. implementation is very obvious a very struggle to overcome. political will is obviously influenced by costly impact on their political careers. add to that i still believe the foresight are still not enough, evident by their small town planning tendencies.

Tama ka, Bai. As i said, that is the result of the City having no foresight. Buot pasabot, wala dyud silay plano sa mga ingon ana nga mga lugar.

And talking about "human" side of the situation, or shall we say human rights, kaning mga tawhana ni na lang ba ang naay human rights? How about kanang mga tao nga naghago manginabuhi para makapalit ug yuta unya gi-squat lang? Don't they have human rights too?

Most of the time man gud, Bai, these people are being used for political gains that's why blighted areas proliferate in the City. It's the reality. Pero I really still wished nga ang City won't stop making plans for the betterment of the City. Maskin dugay ma-implement basta they have something to go to when the situation calls.
i so agree. one case, i want to share my opinion, is on that area in china town that was recently burned down by big fire. saw the online video footage and i would say imo, the that section of downtown should have to be saved from future urban decay. looking at googlearth, looks like a very commercial area by the sea front. not to pick on the residents that used to populate the area, but allowing them to return and re build their community in the place, in 5 to 10 years or even earlier, sanitation and unsightly neglect of environment will certanly deteriorate considering the general population belong to low income and probly most are living on a daily subsistence. another urban blight. could be a haven of criminalities. another headache of the city, big obstacle that could stall urban development implemetations

BI's collections reach P1.6B in Jan-Sept

October 26, 2008 3:46 pm by pna

MANILA, Oct. 26 — The Bureau of Immigration (BI) on Sunday reported collections of almost P1.6 billion from fees paid by foreigners during the first nine months of the year.

The total collection from January to September enabled the BI to surpass its P1.47-billion revenue target for 2008 even with two more months left before the year ends.

Immigration Commissioner Marcelino Libanan said the bureau’s income from January to September totaled P1.579 billion, up by 7.3 percent or P108 million over its P1.47-billion collection target for this year.

Libanan said the nine-month take was also P125 million or 45 percent higher than the P1.24 billion the bureau earned in the same period last year.

According to BI finance chief Elvira Presado, P116.6 billion of the January to September take was collected at the bureau’s main office in Manila while the rest were remitted by the different immigration field offices and subports nationwide.

Presado bared that among the BI offices which remitted huge collections are those in Cebu, Baguio, Angeles, Iloilo, Davao and Bacolod.(PNA)

if you happen to pass by the former Lanang Golf & Country Club, dismantling and demolition of structures has began.

Per reliable sources, it will be SM Hypermart. Too small for 10 has.? Yes, because SM Prime Holdings, now named as SM Land, plans as well to build condos & a business park..urban enclave din.

But it may change from SM Hypermart to an SM Mega Mall Davao. If you read the column of Atty Jesus Quitain earlier this week entitled "Davao's Golden Road" (referring to J.P Laurel Ave.), he mentioned that SM Mega Mall Davao would rise in the site of the former Lanang Golf & Country Club.

But whatever the final plans would be, it is still definitely good for the economy of Davao.

Modular construction technique man pud ang SM Ecoland diba? So murag in-ana ang SM lanang...kanang murag boxy type ang dating na murag lego na giconnect connect.

to me, SM Ecoland's construction is just like any typical mall..

SM Ecoland just employed a mix if steel frame (sa atbang) then concrete sa likod)..if were talking modular, maybe its in the way nga ang floor plan is flexible enough na gi take into consideration ang expansion (ie sa left and right ends ug pati tung sa mang inasal pwede isumpay whatever man ang mall na ilang itukod)

same gud sa ayala cebu, pwede sab ignon nga modular ang design since naka take into consideration ang future phases for expansion

but with regards to modular construction technique murag wa ko kasabot hehe since to me same same ra man ang SM Ecoland sa NCCC and etc..

with regards to SM Lanang..my sources told me SM CIty sya (but that was months ago pa man gud so baka may changes hehe)

but if its an SM Supercenter imbes na SM CIty since ang difference ra man sa duha is

SM SUpercenter = mall+hypermart (mix ng dept store and supermarket)+other SM attractions like SM CInemas, foodcourt etc

SM SCIty = mall+department store+SUpermarket+other SM attractions like SM CInemas, foodcourt etc

Landco optimistic on Samal project
Business World Online (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW102708/content.php?id=046)

DAVAO CITY — The financial crunch has hardly affected property development in the Davao region with a major developer launching a 33-hectare project in the nearby Samal Island.

Alfred Xerez-Burgos Jr., president of Landco Pacific Corp., said over the weekend that pre-selling activities for his company’s project, Playa Azalea, indicated that the market remains bullish.

Playa Azalea is a joint venture project with Anflocor Management and Investment Corp. of the Floirendo family in the island city. Anflocor, which is traditionally into agribusiness and a major banana exporter, is also Ayala Land, Inc.’s partner in the Abreeza shopping mall and business park project in this city.

Despite opening 250 units for pre-selling only months ago, the project’s sales force has sold half. "The people who are attracted [to buy lots] here are those who have the capacity to pay," he said, adding most buyers got their lots on 24-month terms without interest.

Despite worries over the financial crisis emanating from abroad leading to a global economic meltdown, the high-end market in this city has continued to show interest in buying property, Mr. Xerez-Burgos said.

Francis V. Ceballos, executive vice-president, said Landco had initially appropriated P500 million for the project. Total company investments as well as equity from buyers will amount to between P3 billion to P5 billion in five years, he said.

Landco will first focus on developing the property’s beachfront to attract more buyers. "We are hoping we can sustain the interest of those who want to buy," he added.

Oscar D. Tabije, marketing manager for Playa Azalea, told BusinessWorld the company hopes to sell all 526 units in the project within the next three years. The company is also building a 200-room hotel as part of the development. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

But whatever the final plans would be, it is still definitely good for the economy of Davao.

;27145612']to me, SM Ecoland's construction is just like any typical mall..

SM SCIty = mall+department store+SUpermarket+other SM attractions like SM CInemas, foodcourt etc

kayo jud oi...:lol::lol:

sabi nga mall ang gagawin doon sa lanang eh.

kung ayaw nyo maniwala sa akin, bahala kayo....

‘X’ rating ‘too harsh’

By Bayani San Diego Jr.
Philippine Daily Inquirer
First Posted 00:15:00 10/27/2008

MANILA, Philippines - Rebecca Zlotowski, a member of the Selection Committee of the Directors’ Fortnight section of the Cannes Film Festival, was only able to watch the first 10 minutes of Sherad Anthony Sanchez’s “Imburnal” last Wednesday because, she explained, “it was X’d by the censors.”

On Wednesday, the Cinema One production was rated “X” by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board on its first screening.

As a result, its premiere at the 10th Cinemanila International Film Festival at the Gateway mall was scrapped that night. “Imburnal,” which won the Grand Prize in Cinemanila’s Digital Lokal competition, had a second review with the board on Friday and was rated R-13.

In an exclusive interview with Inquirer Entertainment, Zlotowski expressed concern over the state of Philippine cinema.

No audience in RP

“I can now understand how difficult it is for Filipino independent filmmakers to make movies,” said Zlotowski.

She noted that she finds it “shocking that these wonderful movies are not released commercially.”

It’s appalling, she asserted, that “these films are received well in Cannes and other international festivals, but they can’t seem to find an audience in their own country.”

Making matters worse is censorship, she said. “The ‘X’ rating seems too harsh. It’s nuts that these films can’t be shown in commercial theaters.”

In light of this problem, Zlotowski said it’s all the more imperative for programmers like her to “talk with local filmmakers to find out the real situation.”

“I feel it’s our responsibility to bring them to the world’s attention,” she said.

After her week-long stay, she said she now has a “clue” as to why Philippine cinema is the current darling of international festivals.

“There are two things I find interesting: The filmmakers’ youth and the maturity of their works.”

She called it a curious combination/contrast of freshness and skill.

“Young people are very committed, very courageous in waging their battles,” she said. “There’s a cerebral aspect to their works in spite of their young age.”

That is precisely what Directors’ Fortnight artistic director Olivier Père is looking for, she said. “We want to be moved by a movie. We hope Filipino filmmakers will not give up their radical edge.”

Two Philippine Eagles to be released to the Kitanglad wild
By Walter I. Balane

MALAYBALAY CITY (MindaNews) — The Philippine Eagle Foundation announced it is releasing next year two eagles into the wild of Mt. Kitanglad Range and Natural Park following the death of released eagle Kagsabua in July.

Jason Ibañez, PEF field research coordinator, announced the plan during the meeting of the park’s Protected Area Management Board on October23.

Ibañez said they plan to release tentatively in January 2009 another rescued Philippine eagle, “Calabugao” a female from Calabugao village in Manolo Fortich town and a male partner bred in captivity identified for now as “Chick 20.”

He said the release is part of the long term plan to continue conservation efforts for the endangered Philippine eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi).

“What happened to Kagsabua is not a stumbling block,” he said.

Kagsabua was killed by a local airgun shooter near the village where he was released four months earlier.

As a lesson from the eagle’s fate, the new eagles will no longer be released in the buffer zones of the protected area.

“We will release the eagles in the interior part of the forest,” Ibañez said.
He presented the board with updates about “Tinuy-an,” the female partner of Kagsabua, now relocated to a new site at the peak of Mt. Dulang-dulang still in the park range.

Ibañez said that to ensure massive education in preparation for the release, they have planned to conduct information campaigns in 28 villages including 28 elementary schools around the natural park.

He asked the board to pass a resolution to support the release of the two eagles.
Meanwhile, Protected Area Superintendent Felix Mirasol told MindaNews Kagsabua’s killer is still in the custody of the Higaonon tribal community in Intavas village in Sumilao town.

He said a witness did not show up at the preliminary investigation for the issuance of the warrant, at the Municipal Circuit Trial Court. He said they are waiting for the new schedule on October 29.

Mirasol admitted a complication in the procedure since tribal elders wanted to keep the suspect under their custody subject to their traditional justice system.

Kagsabua’s death has triggered policy waves in the province. The PAMB passed a resolution banning the carrying and use of air guns in the park and in areas along its buffer zones.

Robinsons Land to develop 7 BPO sites in 2008
Business World

MANILA, Philippines - Robinsons Land Corp. is developing seven business process outsourcing (BPO) and call center sites this year, as it takes advantage of call centers’ expansion into the provinces.

BPO and call center firms are rapidly expanding into the regions due to lower operational costs, a larger manpower pool and lower employee turnover rates.

Most firms and locators want to undertake pioneering efforts in their region of choice.

The relatively lower cost of operations here have also encouraged many firms in the US and Western Europe to outsource their operations to the Philippines, making these sites even more desirable and lucrative, Robinsons said in a statement.

“We are also giving these BPOs an opportunity to undertake pioneering efforts in our sites, a move that is very much encouraged and supported by the local government units that host our malls and office buildings," it added.

Robinsons Land business unit General Manager Henry Yap said they are incorporating office spaces intended for BPOs and call center operators in their shopping mall developments, specifically Robinsons Luisita in Tarlac City, Robinsons Cybergate Cebu between Cebu’s Chong Hua Hospital and Fuente Osmeña.

Robinsons Cybergate Davao, along J. P. Laurel in the Bajada District, and Robinsons Cybergate Plaza in Mandaluyong City are also under construction and will be ready for occupancy by next year.

These projects are in addition to two recently completed projects in Robinsons Otis in Manila and Cybergate Tower 3 in Mandaluyong City — both now ready for occupancy.

Robinsons Land expects BPO and call center locators to gear their expansion plans towards key regional urban centers. “These areas — Cebu, Davao, Northern Luzon and the Calabarzon areas offer highly skilled human resources from prestigious schools that are highly proficient in English," Mr. Yap said.

Robinsons Land has built BPOs and call centers in Bacolod in Negros Occidental, Lipa in Batangas, Sta. Rosa in Laguna and Cainta in Rizal. In Metro Manila, it has built Robinsons Novaliches and two Cybergate Towers within the Forum Robinsons Complex in Mandaluyong City.

Today, many of the top BPO and call centers firms in the Philippines are located in a Robinsons Land property, the company said.

“Given the limited free time of the agents, having the mall nearby address their needs like hot meals, coffee, wellness and entertainment courtesy of spas, salons and the cinemas, all offering a relaxing alternative after an eight-hour straight shift," Mr. Yap said.

Robinsons Land is planning more buildings in the old Medical City site in Mandaluyong; along Ayala Avenue where a recent joint venture deal was entered into by the company, Security Land and Taganito Mining Corp.; and in Tacloban where a mall is now under construction.

Rustan unit to expand luxury-brand business
Companies
Written by Honey Madrilejos-Reyes / Reporter
Sunday, 26 October 2008 21:54

IT looks like there’s truth to the adage that the luxury market is never affected by any crisis. This, as Stores Specialists Inc. (SSI)—a member of the Tantoco-owned Rustan Group of Companies—will continue to expand its business via the acquisition of new high-end brands.

At the sidelines of the Finex-sponsored forum Friday, SSI executive vice president Anton T. Huang said the company will bring to the local market next year Spain’s famous clothing line Massimo Dutti and Paris-based luxury brand Hermes.

Apart from these two lines, SSI will also open a few more stores of existing brands such as Gap, Banana Republic and Zara.
“We are continuing on with our expansion over the next three years,” said Huang.

SSI operates free standing and shop-in-shop boutiques in Metro Manila, Pampanga, Cebu and Davao. It is the exclusive franchisee of some of the finest international names in fashion and personal care products such as Lacóste, Prada, Salvatorre Ferragamo, Polo Ralph Lauren, Marlboro Classics, Coach, Burberry, G.H. Bass, Jessica, Yves Saint Lauren, Anne Klein, Nine West, Jack Nicklaus, Dexter, Natori, Kenneth Cole, Armani Exchange, Beauty Bar and Lush, among others.

Huang, who is also the executive vice president of the group’s retail unit Rustan Commercial Corp., said they are also beefing up and modernizing the existing Rustan’s department stores.

“We currently have six existing locations and we are refocusing our merchandise offering and the overall shopping experience to cater directly to our core customer base. While we are also looking at opening new branches, our priority at this point is improving the existing branches that we have,” he said.

The Rustan’s brand caters mostly to the upper market segment. And notwithstanding the effects of the global financial crunch, Huang said sales for September and October are still strong.

The outlets, he said, continue to show positive results. “We are still trading higher than last year and we are pleasantly surprised about that. In the department store segment, we are tracking 11 percent growth while for SSI, we are tracking 12 percent to 13 percent,” he said.

In a way, the Rustan executive said, the financial crisis has benefited the company as shoppers are not traveling as much and are choosing to stay home and buy things here.

“I’m hopeful that in our home base, the year will still turn out to be positive. However, we still have to wait-and-see next year. But at the end of the day, we are hopeful that things will improve sooner rather than later,” he said.

Apart from SSI and retail business, the Tantoco family also owns the Rustan Coffee Corp., which it formed in 1997 as the corporate vehicle for the US-based Starbucks Coffee chain.

Starbucks currently has 120 stores locally and is planning to put up more branches as part of its expansion program.

PEP: Concerto to be screened starting Nov 19
10/27/2008 | 03:10 PM

Starring Jay Aquitania, Meryll Soriano, Shamaine Buencamino, and Ynna Asistio, Concerto is a Cinemalaya 2008 entry that will touch viewers' hearts for showing the hardships that a family had to go through during World War II.

This film depicts the true-to-life experiences of a household that takes pride in their family heirloom—a piano that is able to bring much joy and music in the midst of an ugly war.

The displaced Filipino family camp out in a forest in Davao and they try to live peacefully with Japanese officers camped nearby. This does not sit well with the patriarch of the family (played by Nonoy Froilan) since he experienced torture at the hands of the Japanese.

Romance blooms between the young daughter (Ynna) and a young Japanese officer but can she fight for her love amidst the turmoil surrounding them? Meanwhile, the older sister (Meryll) yearns for the chance to play the piano once again.

This period film directed by Paul Alexander Morales will have theatrical screenings starting November 19, 2008.

Davao City's Coffee For Peace

http://img504.imageshack.us/img504/8979/coffeeforpeacedavaosignyu1.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Pinoy Coffee Tickle is about great days because of coffee, excellent coffee and of course unbiased reviews of coffee around the Philippines. Since we, Pinoy Coffee Tickle, are based in Manila and have no budget yet to go around the country, I decided to search for Pinoy blogs that feature coffee in it. I came across Davaofoodtrip, where two foodtrippers, Charles and Tere, try out different restaurants in Davao City.

Their stop at Coffee For Peace caught my attention since I've never encountered the word Peace added to a restaurant or a coffee shop's name before. A little catchy huh? Anyway, I started reading their blog and they explained why its name was like that. According to Ging Navarro Descallar, Coffee For Peace's Franchising Operations Manager:

We are into coffee trading and Coffee for Peace is a venue where they invite people to talk about their cause - to bring and promote PEACE in Mindanao especially between the rebels and government soldiers inviting them to put down their guns and have a peaceful talk over a cup of coffee so that is why it is Coffee For Peace.

What a great idea! I have never been to Davao but one thing's for sure and that is when I go there I would want to visit this place. Putting up a business/coffee shop for that reason will help you succeed and push further even in hard times. If your main purpose is to just earn money then you won't succeed as much compared with having a "social" reason. They have their cause. They have their reasons. And it is for Peace. Coffee for Peace everyone!

With regard to their coffee, all I know is that they use Arabica beans and Philippine Civet Coffee from the Cordilleras and Mindanao. We are starting to be known around the world for our Cordilleras' coffee and this is another great step for it. As for the taste of the coffee, I will leave it up to Davao Food Trip to be the judge. It seems that they tried a drink that won an award in 2007. Here is the link to their Coffee For Peace article.

Also check out Coffee For Peace's Site to learn more.

Thanks to Davao Food Trip for the Picture:)

Davao City businessman claims P139-M lotto jackpot

Monday, October 27, 2008 04:22 PM

A businessman from Davao city has claimed the P139-million jackpot price of the 6/49 Super Lotto online games drawn two weeks ago, an official of the Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) said.

PCSO Larry Cedro said that as a policy their office would not reveal the identity of the winner.

“He is a middle-aged businessman engaged in agriculture,” Cedro said without elaborating.

The lucky winner was supposed to win P131,367,621.60. But because he played the system seven combination for the 42-12-46-26-49-19 combination, he got an additional prize of P8 million, the PCSO said.

The winning bet was placed in the Romeo Angcug lotto outlet along Laurel St. in Davao City. -- Perseus Echeminada

City steps up plans to lure ICT locators

DAVAO City has the key parameters in positioning itself as the ICT hub of the South.

Lizabel "Wit" Holganza, president of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Davao Inc., said the synergy among the stakeholders is one vital factor that will further boost the region's ICT industry.

Holganza, who also sits as the chairperson of the ICT Industry Cluster of Davao Region, added that with this solid tie between public and private sectors, the strengths of the region as a business hub would be strengthened further.

"We can't deny the fact that the isolated conflicts in Mindanao are a threat to our competitiveness. We are now faced with a challenge, the challenge to convince investors that indeed Davao is the best potential business location," she said.

Holganza said that with the help of the trainings conducted by the Davao Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Project (Diccep), the strengths of the city and the other potential ICT destinations in the region are being harped on.

"In this particular training (conducted last September 12 at the Apo View Hotel), for instance, different government agencies and private organizations are gathered together. I think this is a positive sign that the stakeholders are keen on responding to the requirements set by the locators," she said.

The ICT Cluster planning session, Holganza added, was actually a "move towards creating a sound and doable plan especially that all sectors are represented, from the academe to government agencies to business organizations."

Holganza cited the world-class facilities and highly competent workforce of Davao as its competitive advantages in order to lure ICT locators.

"We are proud to say that we are making our manpower employment-ready," she said.

She stressed on the important attributes of the city as it bids to become the "ICT Hub of the South", such as: it was declared as an IT Hub in the Philippines by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) per Memorandum 05-05-200; it gained high marks (82 out of 90 points) from the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) being an attractive ICT investment location; and it was proclaimed "Most Competitive City in the Philippines" for 2007 (Urban Category), with the lowest cost of doing business based on the competitiveness survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).

"These are just few of the many reasons why Davao is the best investment destination, not just for ICT but also for other investments," Holganza said.

Market receptive amid looming crisis: Landco
By Nelson C. Bagaforo

LANDCO Pacific Corp., the country's leading developer of leisure communities, has expressed confidence its target market in Davao City for a world-class property development project has the "capacity to pay" amid the looming global financial crisis seen to adversely affect overseas Filipino workers (OFWs).

Land developers have been eyeing OFWs as target market for high-end residential development projects because they have better income that makes them capable of paying.

But Alfred Xerez-Burgos Jr., Landco Pacific president and chief executive officer, is unfazed, saying Davao City has "remarkable portion" of its population who belongs to class A and B, their target market.

"Davao City is the fourth largest city in the country. In terms of population, it has remarkable portion of the class A and B, which is our target market," he said, but failed to provide figures.

According to a study conducted by Ayala Land Inc., which also poured in a huge investment in Davao City to develop a mall and BPO (business process outsourcing) facility, at least 17 percent of Davao City's 1.4 million population belongs to class A and B.

"Our target in Davao City is displaying capacity to pay. In fact, for our sold out lots, buyers preferred an average of two-year payment, which is good as cash," he said.

Landco and its local partner, Antonio Floirendo Sr. Corp. (Anflocor), formally launched on Sunday the Playa Azalea, a mixed used seaside commercial-residential enclave in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos).

That same day, Playa Azalea's multi-purpose pavilion was also opened.

Playa Azalea, which stands on a 37-hectare property in Limao, Igacos, is envisioned to be the first and "most exciting" tourism estate to hit Davao Region.

This early, close to 50 percent of the number of lots opened to the market have been sold out.

"Playa Azalea re-introduces Landco to Davao in a big way, not just as premier residential resort development, but as the first leisure tourism destination in the region," Xerex-Burgos said.

Francis V. Ceballos, Landco Pacific executive vice president and chief operations officer, said they have opened, so far, 250 units to the market.

"Out target market is very receptive. This early, 112 of the 250 lots we opened are already sold out. We are selling quite well," Ceballos said. "And this only shows we have an active and dynamic sales force."

He said lots are sold from P4,800 per square meter to P12,000 per square meter.

"There's a very good reception. So far, the project is laying some degree of success. We are confident the market will sustain its interest and the momentum," Xerex-Burgos said.

Gerard Marcelo, Landco vice president for hometown communities, said Playa Azalea is composed of four clusters -- the beach side and three hillside clusters.

"We have opened two hillside clusters to the market where the 250 units are located," Marcelo said.

From the beach side, he said, a four-hectare property is reserved for a world-class hotel and garden villas.

City government, biusiness urged
Published : 2008-10-27
mindanao times

AN OFFICIAL of the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) urged the city government and business sector to concentrate in growing crops that will earn more profit and generate more job which can also be sustainable at the same time.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 10th Davao Trade Exposition, Venerando Cembrano of the Workers Amelioration Division of the government agency said it is necessary to choose crops that could maximize land use.

He said while agriculture is the prime mover still of the economy, not only of the city, but the island in general, it is notable that championing a particular produce has a higher contribution.

As an example, Cembrado said Davao Region has consistently maintained its reputation as the major banana exporter in the country, while Region 10 is a top exporter of pineapple, while Region 13 has palm oil. “We should know what crops are suitable for small land holdings.” he added.

He said one crop that the department is espousing is rubber which will be under their new program Grow Micro started only last March. The rubber planting, which the national office has yet to approve, will initially involve P29-million in budget.

In an earlier intreview, Dole Assistant Regional Director Ofelia B. Domingo said rubber was picked among many crops since it one of the highest priced products in the market today. In the Philippines alone, there is a production gap of 3.4 million tons.

Domingo said in order to produce 1.1 million tons of rubber by 2020, which could still not meet the present demand, 3.9 million hectares should be grown with rubber.

She said they some of areas they are considering for the program are the towns of New Bataan and Maragusan in Compostela Valley, adding that once the project is realized it will create 75,000 jobs in five years.

In the city, rubber is one of the three non-food agricultural products grown. Data from the City Planning and Development revealed that the production of rubber dropped by 15.34 percent in 2007 compared to 2006, or from 1.89 metric tons to only 1.79 metric tons.

Davao City
Queen of the south

http://img75.imageshack.us/img75/5454/img9907rw0dp2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
One of the Philippines most laid-back cities is your base for exploring the country's highest peak and plenty more besides
Chip Childers & Steve White

PRACTICALITIES

When to go
The temperature and rainfall vary only a little through the year, meaning hot sun or showers are possible on any given day. the city is also far enough south to be outside the usual typhoon belt.

How to get there
There are numerous daily flights from Manila and Cebu, as well as direct international routes to Singapore and Manado.

Where to stay
the most luxurious hotel in town is the Marco polo, davao.marcopolohotels.com on Samal Island, perfectly sited for divers, there are the pearl Farm Beach Resort, www.pearlfarmresort.com and the paradise Island park and Beach Resort, www.paradiseislanddavao.com You can also pick up a Small hotels Association of Davao (ShAD) leaflet for more accommodation choices.

Even on a short stay in Davao you can feel it. It’s a city with an optimistic swagger in its stride. Some overcautious outsiders still like to ask about security whenever anywhere on the Philippines’ southern island of Mindanao is mentioned, but the locals and migrants from around the country and across the globe who call this easy-paced city home are better informed than that.

Size is perhaps part of the secret behind the quiet confidence: it is officially one of the largest cities in the world. But there’s also the
fact that business is booming. While the city’s exports were once upon a time all about the fruit that grows so easily in the fertile volcanic soils of the hinterland, today the economy has diversified and that includes getting into tourism of all types.

Better flight connections to domestic and international destinations have helped, along with the advent of more sophisticated resorts
and the growth of a local adventure scene that has spawned operators to take you out and show you around the coasts, cones, cliffs
and caves of a region finally getting some long-overdue attention.

Diving
Islands in the stream

Just off the coast lie Samal Island and its smaller neighbour Talicud and many divers choose to base themselves out there where sites are just a short boat ride away.

Both islands are ringed with sites – more than 20 are commonly visited – and between them they offer a wide cross-section of
conditions and attractions. There are the walls of the north coast of Talicud, a couple of WWII cargo ship wrecks, several caves, drift dives and shallow hunt-the-critter ambles at little more than snorkel depth.

Punta del Sol is a popular starting point for many novice divers with a highly accessible car wreck only 6m down, just one focal point. Close by is Allen’s Rock which gives the more experienced something to relish, dropping you down past 30m.

There’s also a cluster of dive spots halfway down Samal’s west coast and this is where those two shipwrecks are located, down at
around 40m. The other sites here are also worth diving for they offer neatly contrasting views of the local marine life. If you are lucky you may discover a pygmy seahorse on a seafan at Beng’s Corner, while Marissa 1, 2 and 3 are pelagic territory, with hawksbill turtles sometimes showing up along with various deepwater fish species.

Rafting
Davao descents

Whitewater aficionados have a habit of looking at maps, going straight to any visible mountain ranges and excitedly tracing watersheds through canyons with their fingers. Do this with the island of Mindanao and you’re going to get tired hands – the island has some serious kayaking and rafting potential.

While it was Cagayan de Oro, in the north of the island, that led the way, more recently the rivers of Davao have come in for scrutiny, resulting in commercial operations on a threehour, 14km stretch of the Davao River.

Water levels, fed by an extensive watershed, can fluctuate impressively, offering huge haystack waves and monster holes in high water. Even in low water, the run generates Class III river running and plans are afoot to offer runs of various levels of difficulty.

Further afield, the rio incognitos in the Apo watershed and the wilds of Bukidnon look very tempting, though those remain the preserve of expedition-level boaters for the time being.

Zip-lining
Trip wires

Zip lines are all the rage at the moment and at Camp Sabros, close to the checkpoint on the road that leads to Mt Apo, there’s a pair that the operator claims are among the longest single lines in Asia.

Each is over 300m long, with the first a more gentle ride across a forested valley. The thrill can be heightened though by making the trip in a sling which means you are in a lying position, head forward, and so moving faster.

Then, once across the valley, you can return on a simple cableway or you can head uphill to the jump-off for a longer and faster run that sends you screaming through a hole in the trees and back to your start point. You work up a fair bit of speed on this one so there’s even a small parachute to be deployed by those unnerved by the speed.

Trekking and caving
Beyond Apo

The main event for keen trekkers is definitely the climb on Apo (see box on previous page), but there are numerous other options including day hikes to waterfalls or to Puting Bato, the highest viewpoint on Samal Island. Mountain lovers will also enjoy the jungle hike up Mt Matutum (2,293m), a conical peak to the west of Apo, that sees far less traffic.

Many of the same areas are also venues for troglodytes who like to do their exploring underground. While there is not yet any commercial caving, the limestone in the area is riddled with chambers.

If you fancy getting deep down and dirty in any of them, contact any of the main gear shops in the city, all of whom can connect you with local cavers.

Thanks go to Sonny Dizon and Rhonson Ng for their help in the production of this article.

The White Sandy Beaches of Samal Island in Davao
Posted on January 21st, 2008 in Beaches by Davao Hotel Guide

http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/6169/1798340874bc2c9de3a8iv4hv4.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Samal is a small island off the coast of Davao. The beaches in Samal are the treasures of the island itself. As part of a tropical country, tall coconut trees and swamps of mangrove trees are common sights in the coastline of Samal. Beach resorts filled the white sandy beaches of Samal with stone and cement dikes between resorts to separate one from the other.

The beaches in Samal are likened into precious jewels that are seldom use and well protected. Only few local and foreign tourists come over to Samal making it a great place for solitude, unwinding, and relaxation. Because the beaches are not crowded, you can truly enjoy some privacy on weekdays as well as on weekends. Samal Island in Davao is a wonderful place to rejuvenate and take it easy from your very busy and hectic life at work and home.

From Davao, you can take a ride in a ferryboat for a few minutes going to Samal. Samal Island is also considered as an Island Garden City. The topography of the island is a combination of rocky heights, and rolling hills. There are also icy waterfalls, beach coves for more privacy, caves to explore, and the beautiful white sandy beaches.

During weekdays, only a handful of tourists are present at the beaches of Samal Island in Davao. These are the days that you can lie lazily in the beach where it is quiet and relaxing. The breeze is calming, the water is clear, and the waves are gentle in the beaches in Samal, the perfect scene to have a peaceful vacation.

Also present in the small island of Samal is the renowned world class beach resort in Davao - Pearl Farm Beach Resort. It was once a pearl farm where varieties of pearls were cultured for commercial purposes and was developed later into a beach resort that is now famous worldwide.

Samal is indeed a beautiful island and can be considered also as a paradise where the environment is serene, the marine life is bountiful, and the landscapes are truly wonderful. For a personal retreat that requires seclusion and privacy, Samal is the perfect place to go to.

The waters of Samal Island in Davao is great for any water activities like wind surfing, banana boat rides, scuba diving, jet skiing, water polo, and other activities that are offered by the various beach resorts that dot the white beaches of the island.

Famous Davao Dive Sites

Coral Garden ,Talikud Island

Davao is naturally endowed with the wonders of the deep that are mostly found exclusively in its waters. So here are some deep sea Davao dive sites that dive enthusiasts should never miss.

Davao waters shelter one of the best underwater sceneries along its coastlines and in many specific spots around it. Various Davao dive sites are mostly coral reefs swarming with multicolored tropical fish, perfect for scuba diving and snorkeling. Davao sea features are often characterized by such, although some unique underwater Davao dive sites hide more interesting sights if the diver only ventures further to more segregated locations. These are nature’s surprises to persevering seekers; like the legendary Linusotan coastline, and the celebrated Kaputian coastline along the eastern and western boundaries of the province.

If one should by any chance linger around the northeast tip of Samal, by all means do drop by the Ligid Caves in Ligid Island. It’s spelunking adventure at daytime while night time is best suited for diving at the west part of the island. This is one pleasure of Davao dive sites dive buffs should never miss: wonderful school of golden sea cucumbers thickly populating the reef areas, broken only by sudden flashes of powerful color displays from soft, waving corals, playful hydroids and basket stars.

About 15 meters down some Davao diving delights are rolling carpets of leather corals. Some more depths below (ask dive instructors or guides for details on this) are two popular caves: one leads to a three-pronged passage to a single corridor. Both caves are sanctuaries for tiny reef fish, dark and spongy corals and sponge crabs. In fact, even the caves’ environs are rich with interesting crab species, tunicates, fascinating scorpion and lion fish, amusing sleeping parrot and rabbit fish, among others. This amazing Davao diving delight can also periodically flaunt around morays and razor fish.

The southeastern waters of Ligid island, known as Pinnacle Point—another Davao diving delight—has a steady presence of water current just right for a more taxing dive. Then try to go further south where one finds flourishing ledges of gorgonians, prolific with clinging crinoids. One may also find an unusual number of morays and cave-dwelling octopus peeping out from hiding now and then. Watching curious cardinal fish is also amusing, along with a great throng of butterfly fish, surgeon fish, and some emperor fish.

The many variations of Davao dive sites that span the coastline of the province make Davao among the top ten dive options in the country.

A glimpse of Davao

http://img159.imageshack.us/img159/7013/21471087612330235a3fblj0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Davao is a province capable of arousing interest or curiosity. The cultural diversity and traditions; the mountainous region marked with rolling hills and fertile valleys. The alluring orchid called the waling-waling, the intriguing endangered Philippine Eagle, whose sanctuary is at the foot of Mt. Apo, Philippine highest mountain. The harmonious relationship between its neighboring provinces influenced by ethnic and cultural ties have made Davao the window to the island of Mindanao.

In the early stage, ethnic tribes lived together harmoniously, in peace and friendship like the Bagobos, Mandayas, Manobos, Mansakas and Tiboli and others. They were the ones that gave the province a name from the word “daba-daba”, now Davao. It is because of its abundance of natural resources Davao has also attracted neighboring provinces and settlers. Despite its differences in culture and tradition people have live together in peace and harmony, makes Davao unique!

Davao is a melting pot for all culture; its geography and surroundings, the piece of history, the diversity of culture and tradition, the gathering and festivities like the Kadayawan Festival makes Davao City inviting and exciting to visit. Just ask the Dabawenyos.

it's like drinking a semi-cucumber shake on the upper half of the glass and sweetened water on the lower half with a tinge of your mint toothpaste (Colgate or Hapee will do). I am not a fan but you might like it.

nice place to savor pizza...al fresco dining in a roofed patio setting. I'm guessing that the place will be hot at lunch but the polycarbonate roof might help in keeping out the sun. The wicker tables are huge and would comfortably fit all your orders

Salmon Gorgonzola Pizza

had mixed reviews maybe because it is not a common sighting in our city. UFO's are more common than this type of pizza. Plus, the Arugula topping will awaken you with its bitter, nutty, and peppery taste. It's an ampalaya (bitter gourd), nuts, and pepper combo in one leaf. I really like that they included new pizzas to shake things up

Pizzas were wonderfully baked thanks to the wood-fired oven. They serve the Italian style crust (thin crust) which is my personal favorite over the Chicago style crust (thick crust). Pizzas come in 1 size which could approximately serve 2-3 pizzavores

City continues to position as ICT hub of the South

DAVAO City has the key parameters in positioning itself as the ICT hub of the South. Lizabel “Wit” Holganza, president of the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Davao, Inc., said the synergy among the stakeholders is one vital factor that will further boost the region’s ICT industry. Holganza, who also sits as the chairperson of the ICT Industry Cluster of Davao Region, added that with this solid tie between public and private sectors, the strengths of the region as a business hub will be strengthened further. “We can’t deny the fact that the isolated conflicts in Mindanao are a threat to our competitiveness. We are now faced with a challenge, the challenge to convince investors that indeed Davao is the best potential business location,” she said. Holganza said that with the help of the trainings conducted by the Davao Industry Cluster Capacity Enhancement Project (DICCEP), the strengths of the city as well as the other potential ICT destinations in the region are being harped on. “In this particular training (conducted last September 12 at the Apo View Hotel), for instance, different government agencies and private organizations are gathered together. I think this is a positive sign that the stakeholders are keen on responding to the requirements set by the locators,” she said. The ICT Cluster planning session, Holganza added, was actually a “move towards creating a sound and doable plan especially that all sectors are represented, from the academe to government agencies to business organizations.” Holganza cited the world class facilities and highly-competent workforce of Davao as its competitive advantages in order to lure ICT locators. “We are proud to say that we are making our manpower employment-ready,” she said. She stressed on the important attributes of the city as it bids to become the ‘ICT Hub of the South’, such as: it was declared as an IT Hub in the Philippines by the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) per Memorandum No. 05-05-200; it gained high marks (82 out of 90 points) from the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) being an attractive ICT investment location; and it was proclaimed ‘Most Competitive City in the Philippines for 2007 (Urban Category), with the lowest cost of doing business based on the competitiveness survey conducted by the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). “These are just few of the many reasons why Davao is the best investment destination, not just for ICT but also for other investments,” Holganza emphasized.

Davao to have computerized tracking system for local laws

DAVAO CITY — The city government is completing its computerized tracking system for resolutions and ordinances, which will be made available to the public within two years.

Councilor Teresita Mata-Marañon, chairman of the committee on information and communications technology, said the project, which was started in 2003, has been implemented on a "piecemeal" basis.

Upon completion, the system will be available on the Internet for easy public access to local laws, including those enacted as far back as 50 years ago, Ms. Marañon said.

She said the city government has spent P5 million for the project, and she has proposed that the public pay a fee to avail of the service.

"It would also be good if the system earns because we [the city government] will have to pay for operating it," she added, but the service will be free for government agencies.

Ms. Marañon said the system will first provide the abstract of local bills for free, but the details will be accessed for a fee.

The councilor said other technology projects include the computerization of the real property tax system, which was implemented last year, and computerization of purchasing and bidding systems.

Last year, the city government approved a P40-million budget for the computerization of real property tax records.

The project, would minimize corruption, said city treasurer Rodrigo S. Riola. — Carmelito Q. Francisco

Chef Baby’s Culinary Star at Binggoy’s Gourmet
By Michael Ebro Dakudao

No doubt about it but in the past decade, Davaoeños have shown a great deal of interest in gourmet cuisine. And happily, their gastronomic cravings and exciting dining adventures have been matched with the wealth of fine restaurants, Binggoy’s Gourmet among them, established in the city. I’ve always known Baby M. Montemayor of the renowned, food-loving Maceda political clan for her taste of elegance in ceremonial dining. She has always been discriminating in her own quiet, polished way about food preparation, presentation and serving, including an admirable knowledge on food and wine matching. Yes, Baby was fine-tuned to be a gourmand in her family. This was long before she even decided to become a gourmet to add to her multi-tasking role in life. Chef Baby is a graduate of the Center for Asian Culinary Studies (CACS), Davao, you see. “Please make yourselves feel at home,” Baby was telling the guests (comprised of family, family friends and Davao’s glossy people from the various sectors of Davao society ) at Binggoy’s Gourmet last October 25. My, but I did feel comfortable in Baby’s homey culinary haven. I tried to recall how many decades ago it was when we last attended a dinner party in what was formerly tita Pat Garcia-Montemayor’s family home before it was transformed into the Villa Margarita. And like the impeccable host that she truly is, tita Pat was at Binggoy’s Gourmet early. Her granddaughter, Marga Montemayor-Nograles, and her charming great grandson with the unmistakable Maceda eyes, Karlo Mateo M. Nograles, kept tita Pat company while helping chef Baby welcome the guests at the same time. Indeed, everyone felt the Montemayors’ brand of warm hospitality as one stepped into the homey and well-appointed confines of Binggoy’s Gourmet. “A lot of our valued clients have been requesting me to feature the best lineup of Binggoy’s Gourmet selections in a special buffet treat. This is the first time we are holding this event,” explained chef Baby. Honestly, chef Baby is one of Davao’s shining chefs whose nouvelle and classic cuisines I will always want to sample. Chef Baby’s delectable cuisine always maintains the balance of the old and new when it comes to smell, tastes and textures. And it is hard to top Binggoy’s Gourmet for excellent home-cooked rendition of classic favorites in the nouvelle cuisine manner with a blend of Asian flavors. “Binggoy’s Gourmet is an ideal place for fine dining with family and intimate friends. We do our best in providing a wonderful dining experience for all,” claimed Baby. Binggoy’s Gourmet buffet tables that day were well-planned and zoned for the guests’ ultimate dining pleasure. The appetizer station had shrimp and corn croquettes, mini cucumber cups with smoked salmon in cream cheese, California and tuna makis, bangus flakes pinsec frito, chicken liver pate with truffle oil, pesto boursin, among others. The health-conscious chef Baby naturally had the “make your own salad from our salad bar” station serving assorted organic veggies. Her own concoctions for salad dressings included the Karlo Mateo house special (my favorite), Ceasar’s Salad, Poppy Seed, White Anchovy, Vinaigrette and Thousand Island. There was a generous serving of sliced foccacia bread as well. For carbo lovers, the pasta station offered a variety of Italian noodles to be matched with your choice of sauces like Spinach with smoked bangus flakes, olives and capers; Salsa Pomodoro with Italian sausages: Three Mushrooms in white cream with truffle oil; and Pasta Ysabel which is seafood with white cream sauce. The pasta dishes were so good and so filling that it will make you want to lift weights in the gym after the heavy meal to burn energy. For the main course, diners were given a choice of seven super entrees: Beef Pot Roast, yummy Heritage Chicken, Roast Pork with mashed potatoes, Fish Fillet al Gratin, Vegetable Casserole, Lengua Pastel, and Paella alla Majorcana. As I shared the table with Davao’s young entrepreneurs, I naturally asked them for their comment. The consensus was that everything was delightfully good. And I totally agreed. For dessert, chef Baby served Banana Bread Pudding with caramel sauce, Fruit Tarts, Tocino del Cielo, Peach Cream Gelatin, Fruit and Sago Salad, fresh fruits, and an assortment of bite size cakes. I can hardly claim to be a gourmet or gourmand, but dining at Binggoy’s Gourmet with chef Baby Maceda- Montemayor is always a gustatory treat as much as it is a learning experience for me. Thank you, chef Baby. And a belated Happy Birthday! Thank you Dennis Tan for the pictures.

DCPO XI Canine Dog Retires From Service

http://img372.imageshack.us/img372/8463/cosmeticsq9.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Spike has finally retired from the Davao City Police Office after 12 years of service.

Spike is a bomb sniffing canine and was brought into the folds of the Davao City Police Office in 1996 under the leadership of then City Director PSupt. Isidro Lapeña. Spike became a member of the DCPO's Canine Unit along with Snappy, a drug sniffing dog. Both dogs were handled by PD1 Roger Dy, a certified canine trainor from the Special Response Group.

Spike was a hardworking canine and he was responsible for the clearing operations during important events in the city including the Kadayawan and the Araw ng Dabaw celebrations. He was also utilized for clearing and paneling operations whenever the President of the Philippines and other high ranking official came to visit.

Spike is known for the following accomplishments:

* finding and recovery of an IED at the Gaisano Mall basement on March 5, 2001
* finding and recovery of an IED inside a plastic container which was left in a public utility vehicle on March 11, 2003

pathological bitterness and pathetic insecurity. Davao grew to be the only metro city in Mindanao, validated by the national government as well as prestigious institutions and that's a fact! It did not beg to become a metro city nor did it self-declare.

Ok, for the benefit of the neighbors (just to underscore the credibility of Mr. Floirendo), sya po ay part-owner ng Playa Azalea. Joint Venture po nila ito with Landco Pacific.

Ayan ha, baka magtanong kayo sino ba itong si Mr. F na kung anu-ano ang pinagsasabi.
