More shopping malls to rise in Davao City
Philippine Star
Philippine Star - Saturday, July 19

While SM already has a mall in the southern part of the city, in Ecoland, along Quimpo Boulevard, negotiations are underway for the purchase of a 10-hectare property also along J.P. Laurel Avenue for the construction of another mall north of the city.

A scion of the Dacudao family that owns the Lanang Golf and Country Club told The STAR that negotiations are on the final stages, although the two parties have yet to agree on the final amount.[/B]

miamin na gani ka nga walay ka insecure-an yet you insist on the allegation wa man kay klaro oi

lastly, sa SM lanang? ngano naa kay gipangutana ana?
As far as my position sa SM lanang, I am hopeful it would push through because altough wala pay official release from SM, naa nay report from both local and national newspapers as well as SSC members nga naa direct connection sa SM..

I also talked to my friend who works sa SM and nag confirm sad sya, as well as a confirmation gikan sa akong cousin nga barkada sa dacudaos (previous owners sa LCC) nga indeed napalit sa SM ang yuta (in fact she was there sa pag demolish sa clubhouse sa LCC to take pictures)

so for me, and akong stand is, its as good as a go although dili pa official kay wala pa may official word/details from SM.

I believe the difference with DAVAO Forumers compared to some outthere in the island is Davao forumers are directly associated with (in some ways) to these investors.

Some, like boju, may doubt the credibility of the information being posted here (especially about SM Lanang). I cant blame him considering that there's no official word coming from SM Malls or SM Prime Holdings.

He may take SM Lanang as an example of a project with no solid basis. But maybe he forgot the fact that the Leasing Manager of SM City Davao is the wifey of Xzibit who happened to be one of the forumers here in SSC. Also, maybe he discounted the fact that Konsehal better known as Councilor Peter Lavina, who is another forumer in SSC Davao, is the head of Davao City Investment Incentive Board - a body na isa sa unang nakakaalam sa mga upcoming investments in the city.

Both individuals were consistent in the information which they shared about Lanang Country Club - it was bought by SM to be developed into another commercial complex.

So what's the difference between this news (SM Lanang) and the other rumored projects in boju's city?

A.) Somebody from SM City Davao knows about it - the Leasing Manager of SM City Davao.

B.) Somebody from the local government's board is aware of it - Davao City Investment Incentive Board.

C.) Somebody from the land owner's side shared about it - a scion of the Dacudao's family shared this news over an interview with Phil Star.

And how about the rumored projects in boju's city like the 2nd SM or Ayala?

Well, I dont discount the fact that these upcoming projects were acknowledged by their mayor and vice mayor. In fact, maybe they're right....baka upcoming nga! And honestly, I'm so happy for them as well. But it would be better if someone from the investor's side can atleast give us a sign of confirmation.

Sometimes I visit their thread and read some of the posts such as:

"Sabi ng guard"
"Sabi ng tao sa site"
"Sabi ng panday"
"Sabi ng driver"
"May nagtitest na sa soil so I conclude..."

Which are actually helpful and encouraging statements. But as smart forumers as we all are in SSC, I think it would be more helpful if we read comments such as...

"Sabi ng Area Manager ng...."
"Sabi ng broker ng lupa"
"Sabi ng Leasing Manager"
"Sabi ng Investment Board"

it may still be speculations but statements like those are atleast more encouraging and worth believing.

ANOTHER NEWS ARTICLE REGARDING NEW MALLS IN DAVAO

New Davao malls to attract provincial mallgoers

by RG Alama

Davao City (5 August) -- The new mall developments sprouting in Davao City will attract mall goers coming from nearby provinces, this according to Engineer Roberto "Bobby" Teo, chief of the Davao City Investments and Promotions Center (DCIPC).

Ongoing developments include the P3-billion Ayala Business Park and Mall which stands in a 9.5 hectare property owned by the Floirendos. Slated to be completed by 2010 the mall will be preceded by an IT/Business Process Oustsourcing Park which is the first phase of the development.

Speaking before Kapihan sa Dabaw media forum held last Monday (August 4) at Pizza Hut SM-Davao. Teo said that the Ayala mall located in Bajada will entice more people coming from different provinces particularly those from provinces north of the City like those from Davao del Norte, Compostela Valley and even Davao Oriental. He said the city's southern neighbors would still go to SM-Davao citing its proximity.

Teo said this is probably the reason why SM is investing in another development north of the City where they bought the Lanang Golf and Country Club property from the Dakudaos. Aside from SM, the Gokongwei-owned Robinsons is also building its supermarket and IT center also in Bajada.

According to Teo Robinsons will not be building a mall but rather a supermarket with a space for IT and BPO locators. The developments highlighted the rising IT industry in the City.

Davao City is part of the country's cyber-corridor under the Mega-Region Development plan of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo also the business sector of the City particularly the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCCI) is eyeing the IT sector as one of its core industries for development. ^^ And just to add....not that Im bragging but there are alot of projects in Davao City which we got it through the grapevine, are now being constructed.

Ayala Center Davao started as a news from RA and Konsehal. But why did we believe them?

Coz RA is directly associated with Ricky Floirendo who happened to be the VP of Anflocor which is the local partner of Ayala Land in Davao City for this project.

And Konsehal is the head of Davao City Investment Incentive Board .

We didnt get the news from just someone outthere...

----
I can still remember that day when Xzibit or Abskess shared us the rumor about this upcoming condo project of DMC in downtown Davao. Where did he get it? From Pag-ibig Davao which is a trusted body who knows a lot about housing or residential projects in the region. Then I also shared the same news when I personally became accredited with DMC Urban Properties and became one of their sales agents.

After barely a year, the Magallanes Residences was launched.

----

Waway also posted a design of a condo complex which he got from his friend in Davao. I believe his friend is the architect behind the project. He posted the info here and months after, Noblesse Heights started its preselling in Davao City. It's another condo complex in the city.

-----

RA once shared this information about an upcoming resort type project in Samal. He said that it will be similar to the Landco's project in Batangas which is Playa Calatagan. Today, we have Playa Azalea in Samal.

how true po that CdO is the economic hub of Mindanao?

Well, people can believe what they want to. Personally, I dont care which city is the economic hub and which isnt.

An economic hub in layman's term simply means an area where all businesses and trades happen.

But it doesnt mean that if there's alot of constructions or visitors in that area, then right there and then....that's the hub!

Maybe people forgot about the hub and spoke concept. There's a hub but there's alot of spokes.

Well, it's so easy to determine where a hub is....Let's make it simple...let's talk about central offices, international gateways, offices that represents the national government, aviation hub, just to name the few.....

I'll take real estate as an example. Can you find the central offices of Filinvest, Robinsons Land through Robinsons Homes, DMC, Vista Land, etc...somewhere else in Mindanao?

Where is the main regional office of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas?

Where is the hub of Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines?

Where are the offices of BIMP EAGA, MEDCO, MINBC, and the likes located?

Where are the offices of local businessmen who had big businesses in other areas of Mindanao located? Businessmen such as the Gaisanos, Floirendos, Banggayans, etc?

Where does President Macapagal Arroyo's flight usually land before visiting to other places in Mindanao?

Where is UP Mindanao?

....and the list goes on!

Visitors data cant determine where an economic hub is. Bohol is part of the top 10 most visited areas in the country.....If we will follow the data, is it safe to say that Bohol (which is a beautiful island and really worth visiting) now is the economic hub of Central Visayas?

But then again, if one city wants to claim that it is the economic hub of the island...so be it. :) Let the city believe what it want to. After all, our city is not aiming to be the economic hub of Mindanao but of BIMP EAGA.

Admirex Solutions, an Australian based call center, to operate in Davao City

ANOTHER call center company is expected to open in Davao City before the year ends.In an interview Tuesday, Bert Barriga, vice-president of the ICT Davao Inc., said the chief executive officer (CEO) of the Admirex, is scheduled to visit the city next week to officially announce the company’s decision to open here.

Admirex, an Australian-based company that operates a call center in Makati City, will initially open 200 seats for call center agents.

“They are eyeing a property within the city where they can have their operations,” he said. Barriga said the investment that the Admirex has poured into its operations here is quite significant, but he failed to provide figures.

“Admirex will be the seventh in the list of big call centers considering Davao. Its branch here will also be the first outside Metro Manila,” Barriga said.

Aside from Admirex, another call center company, the HCL India, also plans to open in Davao within the year.
But Barriga said HCL India’s decision to operate in the city is still tentative because it is also looking at Cebu for their operations.

Barriga also revealed that another three call center companies are also considering Davao City for its BPO expansion next year.

“For the first quarter next year, we are targeting three call centers to enter the city. These are companies based in the US, Canada and India,” Barriga said.

Barriga said that Davao, which is considered as one of the best BPO destinations in the world, offers the cheapest power rates, as compared to Manila, Cebu, Baguio and Iloilo. (JGRS)

yan din ang interested akong malaman..say 5 people from Davao visit tagum or say 5 people from cdeo visit iligan kay binyag sa anak sa amigo

1. does it count as +5 tourism arrivals for tagum/iligan
2. does it count as +5 tourism arrivals for davao region/normin?

i wish pag abot sa tourism numbers, ang relevant numbers lang ang ipagawas ba...and to me relevant numbers mean if a tourist goes there para magbakasyon jud..spending tourist ug dili lang nang niagi for transit or naa lay gihapit

seriously, i can understand the hotel/inn registrations or immigration records, but aside from that, unsay basehanan sa numbers? survey sa tindahan kung nay namalit nga iladong di taga-diha? these questions have eluded me. then someone comes with numbers which everyone considers as infallible. then the rest is cvc all over again.

nope they are not exclusive to Koreans , but i think they alter some details in the design , if you can remember the bldgs was named after hotels of Las Vegas , i remember one was named Belagio.

I think their are some Koreans in PI doing goy business kasi i heard they will asked money from an investor in Korea then run it for over a year or so tapos sisibat na that's what happened to the casino in Apo View & maybe this shady investor claiming to invest a hotel & a resort in Samal

question ko goys, with the worldwide credit crunch, how is it affecting the construction boom there (meaning davao)? or say mindanao? dire man gud, though not really felt pa kay there's so much construction going on, pero the manufacturing sector is heavily hit. would you say it's local money that is driving the construction sector there with little help from the banks.

akong notice lang pud ni, it's like every 10 years, some crisis is happening somewhere (asian currency crisis in the 90s, north american recession in the 80s).

2nd Human Resource National Convention slated in Davao
by Prix D Banzon

Davao City (14 November) -- Close to 300 human resource head of multi-national corporations will meet in Davao City for the 2nd HR National Convention.

Haya M. Amper, section manager of the Marketing and Customer Service of TUV SUD PSB Philippines, Inc. said the convention aims to enhance and develop further capabilities of HR practitioners in the Philippines.

Amper who is also the conference director said that the event is spearheaded by HR Philippines, the country's premier online community. This is in coordination with the Productivity Improvement Circle Association of Southern Mindanao (PICASOM).

The event on November 20-21, 2008 will be held at the Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center in Davao City.

She said the two-day event aims to create a significant venue for the enhancement and development of Human Resource.

"We want to bring together HR practitioners and advocates from all over the country to share HR knowledge and best practices.

Amper said they want to bring down to the lowest HR staff this opportunity so they would be able to enhance their capability.

Although they haven't thought of any proposals during the first convention, she said there will be resolution this time that will center on concerns that will develop HR to be able to address global issues.

She also said part of the discussion is on the employee intention and the succession management.

Meanwhile. she said among the topics to be taken up are on Strategic Human Resource, QMS Framework to Improve HR Efficiency, Employee Retention Program, Performance Management, HR on Government Service, Career Exploration and Planning, Future Proofing: Succession Management, Outsourcing: Key HR Services, Quality Circle Projects for Human Resource.

This year's theme is "Developing a Culture of Responsive Human Resource for a World Class Philippines ". (PIA) [top]

well as jani peng said the latest projects where loaned last year pa so maybe not so affected maybe a 10% increase in materials but i think Ayala can absorb it and fuel is down so it doesn't matter imo , maybe will ask Ibex if they are experiencing some crunch?

well that's bec we are in a snail paced the gov't should anticipate the world crunch every decade

Davao Zip Line: Camp Sabros and Eden Nature Park

Zip lines, according to wikipedia, consists of a pulley suspended on a cable mounted on an incline. They are designed to enable a user propelled by gravity to traverse from the top to the bottom of the inclined cable, usually made of stainless steel, by holding on or attaching to the freely moving pulley." It's also known as a flying fox, zip wire, aerial runway, death slide or tyrolean crossing).

After seeing the Camp Sabros zip line featured at Sports Unlimited, an adventure tv show, with Dyan Castillejo doing the slide and another feature of the camp by Susan Enriquez on Kay Susan Tayo Sunday morning tv, Tutubi got the basic information for the gaining popularity of the zip line in Davao del Sur.

The zip line at Camp Sabros, currently the longest zip line in the Philippines, boast of a length of 380 meters and 400 meters (yes, there are two of them). The 380 meter is called Slide for Life, 150 feet from the ground and takes an average of 50 seconds to ride.

Zip Line Cost:
Solo Ride : PhP 200.00
Tandem Ride" PhP 150.00/head
Round trip: PhP 400.00

How to get to Camp Sabros:

Digos City is approx 50km from Davao City. To commute there, board a bus at the Ecoland Bus Terminal in Davao, either Davao Metro Shuttle, or Weena Bus. Travel time is about 1.5 hours. Better contact vans for hire to take you to the trekkers checkpoint when you get to Digos City bus terminal.

From Davao City or Gen. Santos City, hire a van, preferably a 4x4 or SUV, to take you to Digos City. Travel time is about ninety minutes. In Digos, look for direction signs to Kapatagan then towards Mt. Apo National Park and Mt. Apo Mountaineering Trekkers Information Center, a militaty checkpoint in Sitio Baras, Kapatagan, Digos City. From there, you need to trek uphill for about 30 minutes to reach the Camp Zabros.

Camp Sabros
Telephone number for reservations and inquiries: Edwin Sacdalan at +63.920.875.0015
Camp Sabros has no official website
Camp Sabros Entrance Fee: None (isn't that great?)

---

Another zip line in Davao is located at Eden Nature Park called the Sky Rider!
Eden Nature Park PhP 235/person day tour

How To get to Eden Nature Park:

either you hire your own vehicle (van for hire or car rental) or book beforehand for the shuttle service to the park with pick-up point and drop-off point at Matina Town Square (popularly called MTS) every Saturday and Sunday (twice a day) at 830am and 11am (with return trips at 1:30pm and 4pm respectively) at a cost of PhP200.00/person. On weekends, the shuttle is available for special trips at PhP1,500.00

To reserve a seat, please call +63.82.299.1020; +63.82.296-0791; +63.82.299-0313; +63.918.930.7590 or email info@edennatureparl.com.ph

Too bad and I'm sorry for your sis. Rule of thumb. Never leave any valuables in your car. If you must, try as much to conceal it and not leave it visible to thieves. Burglary happens everywhere in the world. My Davaoeña friend here in Vancouver lost her GPS to burglars when she left it mounted on her windshield while her car was parked in the open parking area in their apartment complex. She didn't want to park it on her parking spot at the building basement because she only went home for a quick lunch and should be back on the road right away being a sales rep. The thieves shattered her left hand side window for the GPS. I guess she has learned her lesson though she muttered it was a bit of a pricey one.

true. my wife always reminds me that.

The view from the plane as we approached Davao was breathtaking. The fair weather allowed me to gaze the awesome majesty of God's sovereign hand as his creation stared back at me in its innocence. Who would believe the ominous stories in the papers about this part of the country? With clear blue skies and a gentle sun, the clouds that gathered were soft and feathery as they kissed the mountains.

I now understand why they call this the Land of Promise. Lengths of space are spruced with greens. It is as if Adam just threw the beans out of the bag and there came lush.

The pace reminds me of home, back in Dumaguete City where life is lived as life should. No hurry as time is a hurry in itself. Why compete with the ticking of the clock when we will never win. Time will just move on. It is best to make the most of what we are offered then and the use the time we have to enjoy the moment.

I am fortunate to have had jobs that allow me to fall in love with our country many times over. For in every place there would be a familiar corner or bend that would always remind us of another place.

What makes Davao City different for me is its welcome. As the plane embarks, people are reminded that this is a smoke-free zone and people are not allowed to light their cigarettes in public places. Glorious!!!

For those who smoke, they see it as a curtailment of their privilege. For those of us who don't, we see it as an imposition of a RIGHT that we all must have.

Aside from the sweet shy smiles of the Davaoeñas, what makes the place attractive as well is the fresh crisp air that soothes the heat that comes from a biting sun. It is joyful to inhale in the early break of morning where there are no "smoke belchers," man or machine that would cloud your day and smear your lungs.

I wish there would be more cities that would impose the anti-smoking law in public places more vehemently with a passion for the life. Though I know this will entail a great crunch in the tobacco industry if imposed nationwide, it may also mean a great cut in medical expense. For public health and safety this is a plus considering that our budgets do not allow much for ailments. Even the corporate pocket cannot afford losing people to disease. Public funds applied to statutory medical insurances cannot suffice. BAWAL PA RIN MAGKASAKIT.

So it is nice to visit Davao City and enjoy in its peace, the bounty of its agriculture, its business, and its air.

An Island

A costal paradise located at the heart of Davao Gulf. A haven to those seeking solace in an unspoiled and natural ambience and to those who are in quest for great adventure and extreme challenges with nature. It's white and prestine beaches and diverse natural attractions combined with the warmth and hospitality ot its people spell out its potential to be a world class eco-tourism destination in this part of Southern Mindanao.

A Garden

Aside from its awesome coral garden, one may not see a floral garden in the island as yet. But as a new City, the Island is definitely a garden of ooportunities. Just a stone throw away from Davao City - a large economic base, and an international gateway, Samal is the best place for would-be investors. it boasts of a superior quality island beach area, large areas of land suitable for development, and a highly receptive local government and community.

A City

The Island Garden City of Samal is one of the thirteen newest cities of the country. Its unique birth was made out of the merger of the three former municipalities of the island namely, Babak, Samal, Kaputian. The official name is Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS). The name speaks for itself and for what place is destined to become - an island cluster, emerging to become the international center of amenities and tourism hub of Southern Philippines. It is proposed to become the convention center and financial district for the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - East Asean Growth Area) as laid out in the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP).

It lavishes ample mountain ranges, a number of isolated hills and an uneven distribution of lowlands with a mean annual temperature estimated to 26.9•C, which saved the island from typhoons and tropical depressions. It takes only 10-15 minutes ride from Davao City via motorboat or ferry boat.

The island is located at the heart of Davao Gulf approximately 900 meters East of Davao City from Babak District. There are seven (7) islets that surround the island. The largest islet known as Talikud Island is about 2,500 meters from Poblacion, Kaputian. The other six (6) islets are Big Liguid (28,0492 has.), Small Liguid (4.5has.), Arboles Shoal, otherwise known as Sanipaan (3.125 has), Small Malipano (.1595 has), Dela Paz (1.378 has.), big Malipano (8.2858 has.), and wishing islet (700 sq.m.), respectively big and Little Liguid are part of Barangay Balet while Arboles Shoal is a part of Barangay Tambo. Big and Small Malipano, Dela Paz and Wishing islets are part of Kaputian District.

The highest slope in the island ranges from 30-65% with an area of 215 hectares. The climate type is Zone IV, which is characterized by rainfall more or less distributed evenly throughout the year. Its soil classification known as Bolinao Clay is suited fro corn and coconut and mango production.

Springs can be found in different barangays and there are also unknown creeks in the whole island and one (1) river that traverse within the city. The entire island including Talikud and the rest of the islets has thirty-one (31) coastal barangays. History of Samal

http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/3235/643292240ljm8xy3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

In the early Spanish regime, during the reign of Don Jose Uyanguren of Davao City , a certain Island within the DAVAO Gulf was named “ SAMAL” in recognition to the settlers who migrated from Jolo and Basilan called the “ ISLAMIC TRIBAL GROUP” or “ ISAMAL” . Most of the settlers lived along the coastal areas and only few in the hinter lands. Their daily primitive way of acquiring foods is through fishing, farming, and hunting within the vicinity.

The island was created into a municipality named as “ Municipality of Samal” and Barrio Peñaplata was the center for commercial economic and government operation. At that time , the municipal councilors of Samal found its concept of local autonomy and effective delivery of services. They therefore decided to create another municipality in order to be effective and autonomous in governance. Mayor Simplicio Obenza , Sr. made his iniative to the speedy creation of two municipalities.

http://img515.imageshack.us/img515/2246/5364372822da8fe768bkl2pc0.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

History of Babak

The historical traces of the name of this developing Island town came to surface from detailed informations through investigations and personal interviews with some native chieftains of how the place got its name. Based on unrecorded history , the place was sparsely populated by few farming natives called ISAMALS who first settled the coastal areas of the Island. There were no known surveyed roads except trails and pathways crisscrossing the lowland areas . Thick forest and green land covered the ISLAND’S virgin soil.

In this isolated unnamed coastal area, there abound green leafy shrubs “ TAGBAK “ which were used by the natives into making baskets and containers for their fish catch , foods and others. The place had been the source of “ TAGBAK “ the main materials for their native handicrafts.

On another account , there was in the said place , a tree which the natives called “ BAKBAK” which used to be the landmark of the place as the trading center of the natives in their trading business , thus , paving the start of the development of commercial business among the inland tribes.

The place then , having been made the center of tribal economic business activities and commercial intercourses, the name “ BABAK” in short was born and became known to be the natives trading center in the island. Babak grew and developed into a native community out of the century old native tradition, old fashioned agricultural farming and antiquated methods of fishing. It became the main commercial center for traders from the mainland “DABA-DABA” , now Davao.

Long before the Christians migrated to this Island , the coastal areas were already populated by natives ruled by a “DATU”. These early settlers were tall, big and /or of giant size “ DINAGATAS”, but these natives , ancestors of the present samal natives became extincts for they were killed and poisoned by the early colonizers. Proof of this can easily be verified by the presence of human bones and remains found in the rocky shoreline caves of liquid Islets and the mainland Samal Island.

The Isamals are by occupation farmers and fisheries using very crude methods. Through the coming of the Christians from different provinces of Luzon and the Visayas , improved methods were introduced , thus increasing production more arable land were cultivated.

History of Kaputian

Before the Second World War Samal was still a virgin forest during that time. Don Vicente Fernandez together with Don Ramon and Don Pepe Fernandez acquired and cultivated the southern part of Samal which was ruled by Datu Budas during the early period of American occupation and founded Hacienda Samal and Compana Maritima.

On June 18, 1966 , the Philippine Congress historically made a landmark legislation through enabling laws passed under “ Republic Act 4754” that dubbed the creation of the municipality of kaputian and separating it from the mother municipality for the purpose. The mandate includes the islets of Malipano and Talicud Island. Under Executive order 184 , Kaputian was legally declared as another municipality of Davao Province.

Since the beginning of its creation the municipality has been ruled by Three (3) political leaders namely ; Hon. Diosdado Alorro , Hon. Dediano E. Rebong and Hon. Aniano P. Antalan . The incumbent took his reign during the revolutionary form of government under the leadership of President Corazon C. Aquino.

Kaputian derived its name from the “ WHITE SAND” that occupies the southern part of the Samal Island long before ruled by Datu Budas.

Relax....if you notice, Davao is busy constructing those midget buildings and we are simply ignoring it. What's great about it is that they are slowly filling up those vacant spaces all over the city and making the city appealing reducing areas which can be considered as eyesores.

Welcome to Samal Island

http://img352.imageshack.us/img352/506/samalbeacheszy3.png (http://imageshack.us)

By Administrator, on September 10, 2008 08:07 AM

Samal is a small island off the coast of Davao. The beaches in Samal are the treasures of the island itself. As part of a tropical country, tall coconut trees and swamps of mangrove trees are common sights in the coastline of Samal. Beach resorts filled the white sandy beaches of Samal with stone and cement dikes between resorts to separate one from the other.

The beaches in Samal are likened into precious jewels that are seldom use and well protected. Only few local and foreign tourists come over to Samal making it a great place for solitude, unwinding, and relaxation. Because the beaches are not crowded, you can truly enjoy some privacy on weekdays as well as on weekends. Samal Island in Davao is a wonderful place to rejuvenate and take it easy from your very busy and hectic life at work and home.

Filinvest Land posts more than 10% growth from Jan-Sept

LISTED Filinvest Land increased its profit by more than 10% during the nine-month period as demand for affordable and middle-income markets continued despite the ongoing US-led financial crisis.

In a statement yesterday, Filinvest said January to September net income stood at P1.15 billion from last year’s P1.02 billion.

Revenues meanwhile reached P3.60 billion during the nine-month period from last year’s P3.42 billion, which is attributable mainly to real estate sales.

.
.
.

For the nine-month period, Filinvest launched 18 new projects with an estimated asset value of P4.2 Billion.

Aside from its recent projects, the company is also breaking new ground outside Metro Manila by tapping into high growth regional centers.
.
.

It also has West Palms in Palawan, Filinvest Homes in Butuan and Kembali Coast in Samal Island, Davao which is a 50-hectare Asian-Balinese inspired island resort residential development.

Davao City: most competitive in RP

* 7 July 2008 – 8:33 pm

AIM Policy Center Another metric by which Davao City can proudly affirm her status as a major player in Philippine industry is the Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Program (PCCRP) of the Policy Center of the Asian Institute of Management. Results of the PCCRP’s biennial study (2007), presented in Makati last 4 July 2008, declare that Davao ranks Number 1 in the metro cities category.

This flagship research project by the AIM, established in 1999, is conducted every two years, and has since become a benchmark of Philippine cities’ overall economic standing. To quote the AIM:

…the Program envisions to promote national competitiveness by encouraging healthy competition among highly urbanized and emerging cities, emphasizing the crucial roles of small and medium enterprises as the backbone of local development. By gathering and compiling strategic data and providing focused analyses of the results, the PCCRP also seeks to cultivate competitive industries, promote healthy communities and maximize the economic potentials of the cities.

This should be another reason for Dabawenyos to be proud of their beloved city. And it should be one more indicator of just how viable Davao is as an investment destination.

I have recently been to Lapu-Lapu, Makati and Quezon City, and the progress in those cities is clearly evident. Still, Davao City tops them all in the 2007 survey. The PCCRP includes the following criteria in its study: dynamism of local economy, cost of doing business, infrastructure, human resources and training, responsiveness of LGU to business needs and quality of life.

Dynamism of local economy / Cost of doing business / Infrastructure. There certainly is much dynamism in Davao’s local economy, as evidenced by an ongoing construction boom, and the entry of new industry players such as call centers and other BPO operators.

Human resources and training. Davao is a favorite hunting ground among headhunters, and the hiring rate of Dabawenyos is reportedly high. Call centers (e.g., Concentrix and People Support) view their Davao staff as highly trainable.

Responsiveness of LGU to business needs. Davao’s local government is the first to establish a "911" emergency response service, which is being supported by the Davao Light and Power Company. Aside from this, the LGU maintains very good working relationships with private enterprises and organizations.

Quality of life. Just read this blog and my readers’ comments… Need I say more? :)

Thank you to Councilor Pete Laviña for alerting us to this piece of news! It’s something all Dabawenyo bloggers should proudly post about!

DAVAO CITY

Davao is the largest city on the island of Mindanao. It is also known as The City of Royalties because it’s where you can find the kings and queens of nature. These include the Queen of Philippine Orchids, the Waling-waling; the King of Exotic Fruits, the Durian; The King and Grandfather of Philippine mountains, Mt. Apo; and the Philippine Eagle, the largest eagle in the world and King of the Philippine skies.

Presently, the city of Davao has emerged as the business, investment and tourism hub for the entire southern Philippines. It has some of the finest beaches and mountain resorts in the country as well as the most captivating diving spots on the island.

Davao City

This is a City that goes with so many titles and so many names. Blessed with a fertile land and a kind weather (it is outside the "typhoon belt"), Davao City's foremost claim to fame is agricultural. It is called the "Orchid Capital" and the "Fruit Basket" of the Philippines; and from its vast plantations and busy ports, the large, the flawless , yellow skin bananas are shipped to various continents. To emphasize its gratitude to its generous land, the city's most colorful event that take place on August called the "Kadayawan (which means both "superior" and "beautiful") Festival", required that 80 percent of the materials used for participating floats must consist of flowers, fruits, and vegetables.

Davao City is also where you will find the country's tallest peak, Mount Apo, with an elevation of 9,691 feet. Souring in the forest tops and air streams of this mountain full of fables and legends, is the mighty Philippine eagle (phitecophaga jefferyi)-perhaps the biggest eagle in the world basing on its wide wingspan of seven feet. This majestic eagle that was threatened with extinction at one time , has been fortunately saved with the establishment of the Philippine Eagle Center in 1987 which has successfully bred 14 eaglets in captivity.

Thriving in the moistness of the thick tropical rain forest of Mount Apo are beautiful orchids, the rarest and most prized of all is called the "waling waling" (vanda sanderiana). Unique in this region are delicious, exotic fruits like durian, pomelo, and mangosteen. If you are searching for ways to describe the Dabawenyos, as the local people are called, like the durian they can be tough and thorny; and at the same time, soft and luscious. Like its favorite emblem, the eagle, they have souring ambitions backed with a fierceness and fortitude to make them happen.

Like the State of Texas, this city talks big. It is the largest city in the world, with a land area of 2,400 square kilometers or 244,000 hectares. For comparison, Cebu City has 280 square kilometers; Hongkong has 1,103, while New York has 1,214 and Paris (city center) has only 105. Davao City has perhaps the single largest banana plantation in the world, Tadeco, with an area of 11,000 hectars. Even its disco called the Harana, has a playground so large it includes an open-air basketball court.

Mindanao, which Davao is part of, is considered the "Promised Land" of the Philippines with its rich, largely untapped natural resources. It has a lush soil where practically everything grows so easily, a mild tropical climate spared by typhoons, timber, precious minerals like gold, and seas that abound with highly prized species like tuna (so plentiful that an old joke quips that their fish die of old age rather than being caught). And among the ceties in Mindanao, it is Davao that is leading the way in tapping the island's potentials, including tourism.

Rizal notched into the list of the country’s 10 revenue earning provinces

November 16, 2008 2:44 am by pna (http://balita.ph/2008/11/16/rizal-notched-into-the-list-of-the-countrys-10-revenue-earning-provinces/)

MANILA, Nov. 15 — As released by the Commission on Audit (COA), the Rizal province notched into the list of the country’s 10 revenue earning provinces, posting P1.361 billion income for calendar year 2007.

The same report showed income generated by local government units (LGUs) in 2007 increased by 7.56 percent and reached P234.82 billion.

The 2007 gross income of LGUs was P16.51 billion higher than 2006’s P218.30 billion.

Among the provinces nationwide, Rizal has the highest income of P577.05 million presenting about 42 percent of its total income. Net income of LGUs, however, reached P40.02 billion. The figure is P751.33 million or 1.84 percent lower than last year’s net income of P40.77 billion.

The Local government Code or Republic Act 7160 has given LGUs the power to generate their own source of revenue by levying taxes, fees or charges.

Rizal landed on the ninth spot among the top revenue earning provinces.

Provinces with highest income for 2007 are as follows: Bulacan (P1.807 billion), Negros Occidental (P1.674 billion), Cebu (P1.657 billion), Cavite (P1.542 billion), Laguna (P1.487 billion), Pangasinan (P1.482 billion), Batangas (P1.386 billion), Quezon (P1.36 billion), Rizal (P1.361 billion) and Bukidnon (P1.295 billion).

Meanwhile, cities in the National Capital Region (NCR), dominated the list of cities with highest income for 2007.

The top 10 cities with the highest income for 2007 include Quezon City (P8.43 billion), Makati (P8.296 billion), Manila (P8.240 billion), Pasig (P3.952 billion), Davao (P3.153 billion), Caloocan (P2.509 billion), Cebu (P2.44 billion), Parañaque (P2.153 billion), Pasay (P2.02 billion), and Mandaluyong (P1.70 billion).

Municipalities and provinces belonging to Region 4-A or CALABARZON (Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal and Quezon) dominated the list towns with highest gross income.

The COA financial statement said, “Total expenses incurred by LGUs in fiscal year 2007 totalled P194.79 billion, posting an increase of P17.26 billion or 9.73 percent from P177.53 billion 2006.”

Negros Occidental, Bulacan, Cebu, Cavite and Quezon were the five highest spenders among the provinces while Manila, Quezon City, Makati, Davao and Pasig landed on the top five spots of big spenders among the cities.

The municipalities of Cabuyao, Cainta, Biñan, Gen. Trias and Bacoor, meanwhile, incurred the highest expenditures among the municipalities.

Rizal Gov. Jun Ynares III said, “Rizal province has been consistent in this fiscal ranking. This is the result of our effective and sound fiscal management which will ultimately translate to benefits to our constituents.” (PNA)

Davao to host 2nd HR confab
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

TO ENHANCE and develop skills of human resource (HR) practitioners in the Philippines, the HR Philippines, identified as the country's premier online community, in cooperation with the Productivity Improvement Circle Association of Southern Mindanao (Picasom), will hold the 2nd HR National Convention in Davao City on November 20-21.

In an interview, Haya Amper, convention chair and Picasom immediate past president, said they are targeting more than 200 participants to join the event.

"Our first HR National Convention was held in Metro Manila. This time, we are bringing it here in Davao. We actually choose either Cebu or Davao as venue, but everybody wants to go to Davao, so we decided to conduct it here," Amper said, adding that as of Wednesday, around 100 participants have already confirmed their attendance.

Amper said the conference, with this year's theme "Developing a Culture of Responsive Human Resources for a World Class Philippines", aims to gather HR practitioners and advocates from all over the country to share HR knowledge and best practices.

"We also look forward to come up with some resolutions to help enhance and develop our HR practitioners. Last year, we were not able to do it because it was plainly a gathering of all HR practitioners," Amper said.

She added that HR practitioners of multi-national companies are also expected to join. Companies such as Holcim, Dole Stanfilco, and others have already registered to participate, Amper said.

Amper added that the convention will also be focused on how to develop the small-time HR practitioners.

"We need to improve HR practitioners to respond to the need that is required in HR and so that we can address some global issues concerning HR," Amper said.

She said some of these global issues are employee retention and future succession management.

The convention will be held at the Brokenshire Resort and Convention Center in Madapo Hills, Davao City.

Khash Persian Kabab

by Blogie on 15 Nov 2008 {Restaurant}

http://img235.imageshack.us/img235/2218/logokhashlg1.png (http://imageshack.us)

Finally in Davao! A Persian restaurant worth its salt!

Khash Persian Kabab Resto Bar, owned and operated by Persians, no less. Iranians, I mean. One of them, Mehdi, hosted a dinner for a small group of bloggers last Thursday: Chattee, Jaime, Andrew, Lyle, Brendel and me.

The food is not on the level of Ziggurat in Makati, but I did come away satisfied.

SoltaniAndrew and I each had the Soltani (P199), which is grilled skewered beef fillets and a longganiza-like serving of ground beef. I think the other one’s what they call kobideh. As is our habit, we took so much time on foodnography, the kababs were already cool when we finally started eating — but they were still quite tasty. A tad overcooked, I think, but that should be easily fixed. And I could tell that they took care in seasoning the meats. Also, I love the way they cook their regular rice: the consistency was just right and not soggy at all, like sushi rice.

Oh, and I really enjoyed their mashed potatoes. Moist and buttery and chunky, just the way I like it. Too bad it was only a siding on my order. Next time I’m going to ask for a lot more!

Of course, because it was a Mediterranean restaurant, I also had Hummus (P85). Unlike the mashed potatoes, Khash’s hummus is too homogenous, too finely ground. I prefer hummus that’s a bit al dente. The taste was different, too. Not bad, but not what I was expecting. All the same, we finished it all off with their generous portions of pita bread.

Another appetizer that we were served was the Torshi (P25), a mixture of marinated pickled vegetables and spices. JoojehIt’s so spicy it’s perfect for opening your taste buds! One thing I really like at Khash, when they say it’s spicy, it really is hot!! :P

Chattee had the Joojeh (P120) — chicken fillets skewered and grilled after being marinated in saffron, lemon juice and olive oil. I’m not much of a chicken guy, but it was surprisingly good… although it tasted a bit like it was fried in margarine.

When you go to Khash, I recommend the Abgosht (P90). When served it looks like a thick brown porridge that doesn’t look very inviting, but once tasted, one order might not be enough. It’s lamb chunks, onion (and I happen to dislike onion), potatoes, chickpeas and red beans, mashed with spices. They serve it with pita bread.

BeryaniIf you’re into truly spicy fare like me, try their Beryani (P199). It’s mostly rice, topped with bits of chicken (or was it lamb?), and it’s actually good for 3 people. I liked it because, even though it was spicy, the flavor was still very unmistakable. Order that, plus hummus and the abgosht, and you’re all set!

That night our bill was P1,117. For six people, that’s a steal. Lyle and Bren even had Doogh (P50), a flavored yoghurt drink that they said was quite good.

The restaurant is huge. There’s an air-conditioned section that could double as a sort of pub; there’s a big al fresco area, perfect for groups of 5 or 6; and there’s a two-table smoking area that’s set apart from the rest. The décor is inspired Persian, which lends more authenticity to the whole dining experience. They even have shisha, if you’re so inclined.

Khash Persian Kabab Resto Bar is located along Quimpo Boulevard (very near K1 Spa), Juna Subdivision. If you’re coming from the downtown area, it’s on the right side of the road, on the way to SM City. Tel. 297-6410. They’re open everyday, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 midnight.

Mindanao investment confab to focus on 7 agri products

SEVEN agricultural products will be the focus of discussion during the Mindanao Investment Conference (Min-iCon) to be held in Davao City on November 25-26 at the Marco Polo Hotel.

Small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) are expected to consider the importance of the said conference for their propagation and production.

What's your take on the Mindanao crisis? Discuss views with other readers

Mindanao Business Council (MinBC) executive director Ednar Carlos Dayanghirang said by way of promoting featured investment opportunities, they want more SMEs be formed focusing on agri products, namely: Pangasius, seaweeds, coffee, banana, honeybee, rubber production and moringa (malunggay).

Topping the list is the propagation of Pangasius (Cream Dory) to augment the aquaculture production of the region.

Elvin T. Millan, Vitarich marketing associate in Mindanao, said the demand for the fish worldwide is big. "Davao farmers could take advantage of the opportunity."

He said growing the fish, although new in the Philippines, is a major and fast growing industry among neighboring Asian countries like Vietnam.

The market potential is good given its taste, meat texture and many other food applications.

The Vitarich Corp., he said, is already into the business after two years of experimentation as it already acquired the needed technology to grow the fish.

As what I have observed, many forum enthusiasts here love statistics that promotes their cities well.

So by income, does it mean that Davao City is more progressive than Cebu City? :)
