mydavaocity July 12th, 2006, 04:17 AM WHY DAVAO CITY IS THE BEST CITY IN THE PHILIPPINES
For me davao is the best as it is where i found the perfect mix of cosmopolitan yet stress free living. you may say that it isnt as developed (economy wise) as cebu or manila (and i agree), but thats the way i like it..if i my criterion for the best city would only be malls, high rise buildings , brash city lifeand a bullish economy, i would have chosen Metro Manila since we all know nothing comes close to it in the philippines in that aspect.
NATURE:
i like the fact that whenever my stressful routine gets the best of me,I have the highlands of eden with its cool climate and natural beauty to go to for a mere 45 minute drive (or if i have the money in the future, i might build my own resthouse in one of the subdivisions there)
i like the fact that if i feel the urge to spend a day in the beach, i have a multitude of choices: paradise island et al if my budget is limited, pearl farm or chemas if i have a little extra, rent a boat and choose isolated beaches on the othe side of the island if i have the whole day to spend..i can even go scuba diving for a mere 900 pesos if the beach gets too boring
now if i wanted to be more adventurous..i can climb mt. apo, explore the nearby provinces or go white water river rafting at toril or at the riverfront corporate city
URBAN CONVENIENCES
i like the fact that after my highland or island adventure, i can choose from the number of malls located in strategic corners of my city to satisfy my shopping needs..be it cheap stuff or high-end clothing or gadgets(our malls may not be that huge, but they do offer their share of attractions for us to enjoy)
after a days work, i can chill out in the many bars around the city to.our parties may not be as wild as manilas or cebus, but they offer a good party vibe nonetheless. plus the themes they offer are varied so i can pick which one suits my mood.
Davao City's dining establishments never fail to fill my cravings, we do have our number of restaurants ranging from expensive international cuisine, trendy cafes to affordable local establishments..(eat all you can at 79 pesos anyone?) plus the fruits..well only in davao can i have my fill of durian without hurting my wallet.
all these cosmopolitan attractions are available in davao, and most are within my budget. a decent massage at a spa? for P200 i can enjoy it anytime i want to (well ok not anytime but 200 sure is affordable), a stylish haircut? for P150 i can,GYM membership? Golf?want to host a grand party at a posh hotel? ok ok the last part may not be that cheap..but we can offer it..a
And if i realy feel sleepy after a massage, clubbing or pigging out i can hail a cab anytime as , even if it isnt airconditioned (though we have a/c taxis too) it sure is cheap.
SAFETY
Davaos City police office is one of the country best, with 911 just a call away (even from your mobile) you can be sure that if there is an emergency, the city is there to answer your needs..now crime may not be 0% but the city is as safe as it can get ( for whatever reason it may be attributed to,discipline? fear of the Mayor? fear of DDS?, the means are justified by the end results)
but crime is really low in davao..like i said, we were recognized as southeast asia most peaceful city (though i wont claim its 100% safe.no city can assure you that after all)
QUALITY OF LIFE
In davao, i am secure that i can enjoy education at par with what metro manila's schools can offer, at a lower price..UP? Ateneo? you can have an ateneo education at a fraction of how much it will cost you in Manila. ( I must admit its not that cheap though, but still it is affordable)
health care is also excellent here in DC, as our hospitals can handle most of the davaoenos medical needs
Pollution? not much..Clean streets?not exactly 100% but i miss it whenever im outside Davao
I have a sensitive stomach, and im very particular with the water i drink, in davao, i can drink directly from the tap witout worrying if its safe or not (it is a known fact that the quality of our agua is only second to holland)
I also like the awe i feel everytime i experience a typhoon when im out of davao city, we are typhoon-free here you know
GOVERNANCE
Lastly the governance here is A-1, ( yes corruption exists in davao) some ordinances may be too strict and to some extent unreasonable to outsiders, but the fact that these "unreasonable and strict ordinances" get implemented is a testament to good governance..thats why the citys streets are clean, rights are protected, and basic services are deilvered.Iin the past, i might have complained on how the city focuses on too much peace and order and socio-economics rather than the economy, but they have a well laid out development plan, its just that it wasnt given much hype..our mayor is mr no-nonsense-no-papogi after all.But now that his peace and order and socio economics are in place (he wanted to provide a solid foundation for davaos development diay before anything else..makes sense though aron even when unexpected increase in economic ativity comes, andam na daan ang city ug dili na mag-apas)..hes starting to set his eyes to more on development and beautification projects..the central park, sports complex, traffic modernization (yes onins our traffic lights have been given attention), The marina, extra flyoever, Tourist and Investment promotion,
etc.
These are just some of the reasons why i think davao is the best, another city may offer better but it is in Davao that i can experience the perfect mix of urban conveniences, natural attractions, quality of life, Peace and order and effective governance..so why live elsewhere?
Is it ok with you if I post this at my blog (http://mydavao.wordpress.com). I'll credit it to you and link it to your profile here in ssc. If you plan to use it elsewhere, k lang din, pahingi na lang ng link. :D

cebu city is a great and beautiful city, no question. in fact the whole philippines is beautiful having places like cebu, davao, palawan, baguio, boracay, cdo, tagaytay, etc. cebu must and should be the no. 1 in the heart of cebuanos just like davaoeños will always choose davao to be their no. 1 city. this should be the spirit because you'll be persona non grata if you'll not choose your own city. tourists come to our place and say "your place is beautiful", but almost always in their hearts stitched the words "there's no place like home".
beauty is in the eye of the beholder ... beautiful place to live is in the home of the traveler...

PHOENIX. A brand under a proudly home-grown oil company known as DOTSCO (Davao Oil Terminal Services Corporation) operating in Mindanao with the goal to become the biggest supplier of petroleum products in the land. Under the trademark PHOENIX, DOTSCO awards gasoline service station dealerships, providing unleaded, premium and regular gasoline, kerosene and diesel at very competitive prices. The soaring of Phoenix quality petroleum products in the oil industry will surely create a tough mark in the petroleum business.
Fuels Life. A tagline encapsulated from a single-minded proposition, promises to alleviate the lives of the Mindanaoans by providing them quality petroleum products to fuel big and small businesses to progress; A commitment that Phoenix and DOTSCO put their hearts and wings together to chart a course for the next generation to enjoy a decent life in the future.

The CAGE is a good example of income-generating establishment inside the Phoenix community. In this cage, you will find a coffee shop brewing native barako, espresso, cappuccino and a special durian blended coffee to perk up travelers and drivers before hitting the road for a long journey. For the bar hoppers, getting the beat and moving with the groove can be enjoyed with fancy at the Cage resto-bars. These bars are open to everybody who wants to free their spirits with style and grace.
The NEST is a convenience store operating 24 hours to serve the people in the neighbouring communities by providing them the basic household needs and helps them ease up their hectic lifestyle; a pawnshop booth will be installed to address the needs of the customers who are financially challenged opting for immediate solution. As banking services get remote, Phoenix will also negotiate and arrange the plausible installation of an ATM machine to bring banking services closer to the people especially in the far-flung areas.

Earlier in the year, I was able to visit Bangkok, Thailand for an international convention of life underwriters and financial consultants & advisors in my work as a unit manager for Prulife UK. It was a great opportunity for me to visit such a diverse place, filled with beauty, old charm and balance with the ultra modern and advance amenities in life. I was truly surprised to see that despite its modernization, Thailand still had a strong hold on its rich cultural traditions.
When we arrived at their modern airport, I couldn’t help but notice their country’s flag (thick red, white, and blue stripes) displayed all over the place. Together displayed with the Thai flag was a bright Yellow flag with a crest-like logo at the center, which I later learned, was the official flag of the Royal family. The flags were displayed on the walls, aisles, ceilings, practically all over.
I was looking at the faces of the Thai airport personnel, and quickly noticed that they simply looked just like us - Filipinos; the color, the built, their eyes and hair, the way they dress, etc…almost very Filipino. But when I heard them speak their language, I knew they were different, especially with their high-pitch tones. I was very impressed with the modernization & cleanliness of their airport, and was obviously reminded that I was now in a different country, most especially by the sight of their country’s flag displayed all over.
We were fetched at the arrival area by a representative of the travel agency, named Dil. He guided us to a waiting van which would bring us to our hotel. We were told by Dil that it would take an hour or more to the hotel. As we were headed to our destination, I again noticed that the Thai flags were all over the highways, streets, and buildings of Bangkok. So I asked Dil, “What’s the occasion? Why are there so many flags displayed on the streets and buildings?” Dil quickly replied in his high-pitched tone of voice, “Occasion? There’s no occasion…it is always like this!” His reply struck me. “It is always like this!” I was waiting for Dil to ask me, “How ‘bout in your place, do you put up your flags?” If he did, I would not be able to answer him quickly in all honesty.
As we cruised along the roads of Bangkok, my associates and I also noticed that in almost all major thoroughfares, intersections, and large buildings, there stands a billboard with a picture of a man strategically displayed for everyone to see. He had similarities with our former president, Fidel V. Ramos. In fact, I presumed that the person in the picture was most probably their president or leader. He would either be in his military uniform, or in batik. There were some pictures where this man was in full regalia, which built up my curiosity. So again I asked Dil who this guy was, he quickly answered, “Sir, he’s my King.” I was taken aback by his quick, but sincere and heartfelt answer. I was surprised by the manner he regarded King Bhumibol as his own by telling me “He’s my King”.
In that long drive to the hotel, I could not help but think of our country, the Philippines, and if Filipinos still have that sense of ownership of being Filipinos. We hear a lot of negativity towards our country, our national government and its systems, about our politicians in the Senate and in Congress, etc. etc. etc. I personally believe that the disease of Filipinos being sick and tired of being one is becoming very evident. Isn’t it obvious that a lot have worked and/or migrated to other countries? Everyday, the number of Filipinos leaving our country has been increasing; leaving to have a better tomorrow. This may seem elementary, but I guess, if only life in our country is 20 times better than today, Filipinos would not be leaving, Filipinos will have that sense of ownership towards our country, our government, our community…just like Dil’s sense of ownership with his King.
As we were passing along the roads of beautiful Bangkok, Dil was pointing and showing us the different buildings, offices, tourists spots, different important areas of interests, still with his natural sense of ownership. “This is the building of our Ministry of Defense…This is where our Buddha’s are housed…This is our Chinatown…This is where our ancestors started …This is our Ministry of Finance, where our money are made…” I felt that Dil had showed us his pride in his outfit naturally. He made us appreciate that he was proud to be a Thai.
In that short trip to Thailand, I had the opportunity to meet up and dine with my childhood playmate back in Sunday school. She and her husband have been living in Bangkok for a little over ten years. They were telling us that when they left the Philippines to study and work in Thailand, Bangkok was 10 years behind Metro Manila; this was in terms of economy, infrastructure, development, etc. Now, it’s the other way around (and with a twist), Manila is 15 years behind Bangkok…and still preserved and maintained their rich traditional and cultural practices.
Despite the modern railway system, the volume of modern vehicles, they still make use of the Tuk-Tuks (their version of our tricycle) for an alternative means of transportation. In spite of the global acceptance of English as the global language, the Thai’s still maintained the use of their Thai language in almost all medium of media - television, radio, music, newspaper, outdoor advertisements, etc. Even in the face of global influences, the Thai’s still maintained their faith in their religion - Buddhism. We were told that 95% of the population was religious in nature. In fact, you will see that in almost every corner of Bangkok, religious statues and symbols are placed. Thai’s would either pause to say a prayer, or show respect by bowing to these religious images.
I also learned that the Thais indeed have strong sense of ownership, and pride in their outfit. This is one of the major reasons why Thailand is very progressive, and probably 20 times better than our country. Here are simple examples: the Thais keep their surroundings clean, because they don’t want their respective places to be dirty and smelly, thus making Bangkok very clean. The Thais follow simple traffic rules and government regulations, because they are told to do so, and they like it, thus making their leaders and officers do their jobs well for their country. The Thai’s maintain to be religious in nature, because they do not question their leaders and make life complicated, thus making Thailand one of Asia’s safest places to be. The Thais are governed by a parliament, but when the government cannot settle their problems, they let the King decide, and when he makes his decision, it becomes final and shall not be broken.
How I wish my beloved country and countrymen would have the same discipline. How I wish every Filipino will have pride in their outfit, and great sense of ownership towards our country, our government, and our community. How I wish I could do something to help my Philippines and my Filipino brothers and sisters.
When I got back to my native Davao, I told myself that I needed to do something from what I learned from Dil and the rest of the Thais. I felt that as an individual, and coming from the private sector, my effort may be in vain, but I felt something has to be started – no matter how small it may contribute, but at least I did my part.
I remembered, not so long ago, seeing a picture of an uncle of mine living in the US for more than 30 years now. It showed my uncle showing off his house in California. What struck me in that picture was that he had a flag of the Philippines displayed beside an American flag outside his porch for everyone to see. I was told that it was a common practice in the US to display their flags. Could this be one of the reasons why they are what they are now? Is there something to their strong sense of pride of being American patriots? Maybe. I personally witnessed this myself here in Davao. I was inside one of Davao City’s exclusive residential subdivisions, trying to find a client’s house, when I noticed a house with a flag of Germany and beside it was our Philippine flag, displayed outside strategically for everyone to see. After a couple of blocks, I also noticed a house with the American flag displayed beside a Philippine flag. Since I had to get down from my car to ask for directions from this lady helper outside the house with the American and Philippine flag, I could not help but ask her, “Are the owners Americans or an American married to a Filipino?” She quickly answered back, “Americans…living here in Davao for more than 5 years now.” Suddenly I felt embarrassed and guilty. Here are foreigners living in our country, and they still maintained their nationalism by putting up their respective flags. To show their respect to our country as new residents, they also put up the Philippine flag to establish residency, and taking pride of being one.
I guess it’s high time for us to ask ourselves, “Why are we not taking pride of our Philippine flag? Why are they not displayed everywhere for everyone else to see? Why are we not taught to display our Philippine flags regularly, not only in government institutions or buildings, but in our own establishments and houses? Why is it that the Philippine flags are just displayed when June 12 is approaching? Is it only during our Independence Day that we are again reminded that we are Filipinos who take pride in our Philippine flag?” Even during Independence Day, we tend to be reluctant in putting up our country’s flag. Why not encourage every business establishment to display the Philippine flag all throughout the year, and take pride in doing business in the Philippines? Why not encourage every household to teach our children to take pride in our Philippine flag by putting up flags in our own houses? If there is pride in our outfit, I do not see why we will not prosper as a community and as a nation.
I remember taking pictures of government buildings and institutions in Bangkok, and they displayed their flags in multiples. Some had five to ten flags raised in front of their offices/buildings. They had multiple flags in their bridges, roads and highways. In my opinion, it shows strength and pride in their outfit. Why can’t we not duplicate such strength in own country? Is it because of our politicians? Or is it because you don’t take pride in our national government and the people running it?
I honestly believe that as an individual, I may not be able to tap the national government and give them a piece of my mind…in fact, I do not intend to do that. But I may be able to share my thoughts and contribution “regionalistically”. As a Davaoeno, I take pride in my outfit by living a life of significance. As a Davaoeno, I take pride in my outfit by contributing to the community of Davao by distributing stickers of the Philippine flag, with a caption below saying, “PROUD DAVAOENO”. I encourage you to take one and put it in your vehicles, and show your support that you are indeed a proud Davaoeno. I encourage every businessman to make a difference in their lives by spending a little, by investing in a flag that will be displayed all throughout the year. I challenge the local politicians to pocket their crazy politics for a while, and take pride in your outfit as proud Davaoenos - by putting up flags in your vehicles, and take part in spreading flags all over the city. If there’s a need for you to donate to public schools by letting these schools have more than one flag in their campuses, so be it. I encourage the local printers to duplicate the stickers which I have started to give out so that it may be distributed extensively. I encourage each and every Davaoeno to do their part for the city’s progress and development, by taking pride in your outfit and develop that sense of pride and ownership.
Can you imagine our Davao City, taking pride in our Philippine flag? When every individual takes part in this campaign, when every Davaoeno takes pride in their outfit, when every Davaoeno develops his sense of ownership, can you imagine what life could be? Every Davaoeno will always remember the words of Pride, Hope, Dignity, Development, Performance, Credibility, Discipline, Respect, Honor, and Freedom. People from the other side of our country will be talking about us; people in the national government will take the cue (once again) from Davaoenos; then and only then, an individual’s contribution will have a part in our country’s development.

Hello!
The Thais are truly a remarkable people. Never been enslaved by any other nation, they have a very strong national pride and their reverence to the monarch is perhaps second only to the time when millions of Japanese were willing to die for their emperor.
We can learn a lot from them for their love of country and respect for their head of state. But there is certainly an ocean-wide difference (as big as the South China Sea) between the Thai King and the fake Queen by the Pasig River.
But yes the flag is the flag and we should respect it. The sticker would be of help but unfortunately they are small compared with witless billboards that dominate our streets and highways. :bash:

tj_brewed July 13th, 2006, 04:42 AM One thing I love about Davao is our Online Pop Culture.
We listen to online music / live stream via www.imix.fm and other local online stations.
We purchase online via our own www.davaosale.com or www.davaoportal.net
We socialize through our own www.fwendz.com

Davao City! Let's face it! We are not the most urban city in the archipelago! We are not a super - mega metropolis! But our modern city has never failed to provide the appropriate social service and security to its constituents. Davao does not have megastructures. But we have a mayor and city officials with mega hearts making its citizens' welfare first on their priorities! :) Alin ba ang mas importante? satisfied ang mga capitalista? or satisfied ang mga common Dabawenyos?
And for that, proud ako sayo Davao - its people, culture, and our goal to move forward!

yup would love to see davao a federal state but even better to see it independently. by then davao people is wholy empowered to carve it's own destiny and grow withouth the wrath of philippines politics. imo, for as long as davao is a strong economic competitor to its counterpart/s, it will always get the crumbs falling off the table. and for every step forward, pulled 2 steps backwards by shadowy saboteurs up there. am not inciting to sedition. this is my own thinking, good or bad to some.

what? goodnes. mao ni akong ginakalagutan sauna kay ngano naputol ang pagkaguapo nga 4 lane road. tree lined pa sa median island. galing ng davao!
junax July 13th, 2006, 07:50 AM ^^ yeah, i like that tree lined road too. ganda ng pwesto ng indonesian consulate doon. sa ngayon alternate road pa sya but if sm expands lahat ng papasok sa backside entrance dito na siguro dadaan.
speaking of our avenues with center islands decorated with trees, flowers and waling-waling lamp posts, i have my list:
measured part of avenue in kilometers are those with centers island only:
1. mc arthur high way, matina (4.21 km)
2. r. castillo street (3.54 km)
3. quezon boulevard (2.88 km)
4. mc arthur highway, lanang (2.10 km)
5. quirino avenue (1.76 km)
6. dacudao avenue (1.52 km)
7. indonesian consulate drive (1.48 km)
8. roxas avenue (1.05 km)
9. tulip drive ext., sm drive (.67 km)
10. other side of sm drive (.67 km)
11. anymore?
if ever we'll have LRT lines from diversion-bangkal up to buhangin-panacan (excluding areas from ulas-toril, ulas-calinan and panacan-lasang), these are my proposed lines traversing avenues and streets that are connected (with no 45 degrees turn):
1. diversion-bangkal up to panacan crossing (18.07 km) (hehe how will lrt navigate this terrain?)
2. lapu-lapu st. up to panacan crossing (9.73 km)
3. quimpo blvd. up to cabaguio avenue-DMC (9.14 km)
4. diversion-bangkal up to sta. ana avenue (8.96 km)
5. monumento magallanes up to lanang-r. castillo (7.31 km)
6. agdao-dakudao avenue up to buhangin underpass (3.7 km)

melon July 13th, 2006, 11:39 AM This is my very first post in this forum, hope i'm welcome here hehehe
Anyway, I've been reading the previous Davao threads and those really made me proud of being a Davanoeño. I'm beginning to miss Davao now
I'm an electrical engineer from AdDU (i can see a lot of ateneans here, good for me hehe), just graduated last year, and I am now working here in Cebu, mag-five months na, and this is the longest time i've been away from Davao ever since I was born hehehe
I just have this one concern though while reading the threads. Yeah, Davao has great resorts, tourist spots, restaurants, and a lot more to come (malls, hotels, roads, etc) but I can't see any plans of providing jobs for Davao's young professionals, like me! After I passed the board exams, I really had no plans of working anywhere else but in Davao, but after months and months of job hunting, wala juy koy makitang tarong nga trabaho! (medyo mapili pud ko sa pag-apply nako hehe) I had no choice but to go somewhere else where my skills and qualifications would fit. Sayang kaayo because in my batch alone in Ateneo engineering, 9 were topnotchers (i think) and 2 summa-cumlaudes and where are they now? Almost all of them, if not all, are either in Cebu or Manila.
I just wish Davao would do what Cebu, for instance, has been doing right now, trying to make Cebu an I.T. hub, attracting investors from call centers to Engineering RnD and manufacturing facilities here. If that would happen in Davao, I would definitely go back there. I don't care about those high-rise buildings or world-class resorts, I just want to earn a decent income in my home-land... and enjoy those resorts hehe
Anyway, glad to post finally hehe. Keep posting guys, those helped me a lot with my despair here hehehe.

Hello, Melon. Welcome to the forum.
Davao IT industry players are well aware of efforts happening in Cebu, especially with the CEDF-IT organization. We are doing the same, starting with the reorganization of an ICT umbrella organization.
For now, though, I can only safely say that there will be growth in BPO's and other types of outsourcing companies, including software development. IT manufacturing, like the chip fabs in PEZA zones in Cebu and Laguna, might not be coming to Davao in the near term. Cebu had to fight to keep NEC from going to China. It is tougher now to attract manufacturing firms to build anywhere outside of China. If, however, you are eyeing a career shift towards the services industry, like in software development, then Davao can guarantee that it still has that future for you.

Thanks. I'm glad someone is doing something about that. I hope the investors are quite aware of that as well :) I can also see a lot of software developers from Davao around here, we should not waste people like them. I think the Davao gov't should be clear with their goals and intentions, investors don't want to take the risk. And probably it's time to change our image. An American investor here in Cebu would have outsourced its company there in Davao but got discouraged by how peace and order are being handled there (probably the notorious DDS?). Small issues like that, eventhough we don't mind them (we actually like them lol) could easily discourage investors. That's so sad.
Anyway, at least steps have been taken. That's great news. Perhaps an IT park would help :) Good day to all!

Skyblue_Navyblue July 13th, 2006, 04:11 PM This is my very first post in this forum, hope i'm welcome here hehehe
Keep posting guys, those helped me a lot with my despair here hehehe.
you are so welcome here in this thread!!

Google Talk on Chikka part of a bigger plan -- Exec
By Erwin Oliva

THIRTY million subscribers of Philippine-based mobile instant messaging service Chikka can now chat with Google Talk users, the company announced this week.
"All Chikka subscribers can now do Google Talk and vice versa," said Chito Bustamante, chief operating officer of Chikka Asia Inc, in an interview.
Google Talk is the free downloadable instant messaging service from Google. Chikka, on the other end, offers mobile instant messaging service that allows PC users to chat with mobile phone users and vice versa.
Early this year, Chikka signed up with Google's "Open Federation" for Google Talk. The federation was created to bring popular messaging communities together.
The deal with Chikka and Google, however, goes beyond instant messaging, Bustamante disclosed.
"What Google wants to do is to [push] services to the Chikka community. It will be like Adsense on mobile," the Chikka executive added. Google Adsense is a contextual advertising solution to web publishers, which takes advantage of Google's search engine.
Chikka said its mobile instant messaging service is also available in the US, Guam, India, and Thailand.
The Chikka-Google Talk interconnection is made possible under a federation of communication service providers promoted by Google, to interconnect with Google Talk and bring popular messaging communities together.
Meanwhile, Bustamante said Chikka Asia is now in discussions with MSN and Yahoo! But he just smiled and said, "No comment" when asked if the mobile instant messaging service will soon interconnect with these two other big messaging communities.

Filipino Stanford fellow dreams of a high-tech Davao City

Former Yehey.com co-founder and Funchain.com creator Jason Banico is dreaming of a high-tech Davao City.
After spending nine months in Silicon Valley as a Reuters Digital Vision Program fellow, Banico is back in the Philippines helping his local government and private sector groups transform the city into a "Silicon Valley."
Banico said he went to Stanford to study how incubators could help build a Silicon Valley in developing countries like the Philippines.
To do this, however, he needs to work with different stakeholders in the city. He is currently in discussions with the chamber of commerce in Davao City, ICT groups and the local government.
He has also created a blog called "Silicon Gulf" to share some of his thoughts on making Davao City a tech hub.
"The larger objective is to move forward the state of ICT in Davao City in two to three years in areas of job creation and innovation. The personal objective is to assist the government, the chamber, and one pilot school with activities that will help improve academe-industry collaboration, IT promotion and research and development activities," he added, in an online chat with INQ7.net.
He's now working with an ICT Council in Davao. He also plans to collaborate with Ateneo de Davao University on possible academe-industry collaboration.
From his bio as a fellow in Stanford University, Banico has proposed to "build a pipeline from open source software conceptualization by students within the university's information technology and entrepreneurship programs, to commercialization by entrepreneurs within the incubator."
He hopes to reduce brain drain of information technology skilled workers by improving the ICT capacity of the Philippines.
Now, he hopes to apply this new-found knowledge in Davao City.
"I have my heart set to improving my hometown. Davao has so much potential, and our graduates are doing well in Cebu, Manila and overseas. With the world flattening, it doesn't matter so much now whether a company is located in Manila or elsewhere," he said.
Banico admitted getting everyone to cooperate in this ambitious project a challenge.
"Since I have been in Manila for most of my career, I still have to feel my way through to the best way of getting things done in Davao," he added.
Banico is currently the chief technology officer of Hubport Interactive, a Philippine-based web development company.

Wow Konsehal, that's great news! I hope the gov't will support that. I think what made the IT industry here in Cebu successful is the great support from the local gov't. It seems na ang tanang focus sa ilang gov't is on it, makita jud sa mga investors ang determination nila. Kung ako cguro investor, ganahan jud ko mo-invest in a place like this. I wonder what Duterte's view on this matter is. I get the impression na he's more preoccupied with the habal-habal and mga drug-addicts hehe. maybe i've been away from Davao too long. I used to watch his show "Gikan sa masa para sa masa" when I got bored, and yeah, his tough image is cool but now, i'd like to see a businessman image. Investors like that :D

davaoeagle July 14th, 2006, 07:47 AM Mining sector to jumpstart Mindanao economy
The Philippine Star 07/14/2006
The revitalized mining industry is seen as the best and rare opportunity to jumpstart the economy of Mindanao, Paul Dominguez, president and chief executive officer of Sagittarius Mines Inc. (SMI) said.
In a presentation before the 30th general assembly and annual meeting of the Bishops-Businessmen’s Conference recently, Dominguez said Mindanao will be able to catch up with the rest of the country in terms of economic progress if responsible and sustainable mining is allowed to continue.
There are 24 priority mining projects in the country, 10 of them in Mindanao.
Statistics in 2000 showed that the per capita income of Mindanao stood at P19,907 or roughly only 62 percent of the P32,141 national per capita income that year.
He said mining is the best economic opportunity for Mindanao, adding that the industry has the potential to generate 240,000 jobs in the next six years and could attract between $4 billion and $6 billion in foreign direct investments.
"We are at a big crossroads, we can take advantage of that chance, modify the whole economic structure. If we don’t take advantage of that, the investors looking for resources will all go back to Peru and all other places because that demand has to be satisfied," Dominguez told nearly a hundred guests and BBC members at the Asian Institute of Management.
"In fact, in Australia and other countries, they are already exploring the seabed, looking for copper deposits under the sea. No community problems there; they are in the middle of the ocean," he added.
Some bishops, however, expressed apprehensions about irresponsible mining.
Bishop Jose Mangiuran of Dipolog said mining would produce pollutants that would endanger the environment. Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez of Marbel expressed fear that the watershed in Socsksargen (South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sarangani and General Santos City) would be adversely affected.
SMI’s Tampakan copper-gold project, now in its pre-feasibility stage, holds a financial and technical assistance agreement (FTAA) with the government to develop a 27,945-hectare area straddling South Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Davao del Sur. The area is believed to hold the largest undeveloped copper-gold deposits in the world.
Other BBC members in the business sector cited other issues that have given mining a bad reputation.
Ernesto Aboitiz, BBC vice co-chairman, said poverty is the real problem why the country suffers from environmental degradation.
"Our forests were not destroyed by loggers," he said, "but when the loggers leave the forests, poor people who are trying to survive will take over and burn the trees so they can plant."
The worst mining disaster, according to Aboitiz, is Mt. Diwalwal in Compostela Valley where small-scale miners are using mercury to extract gold.
Economist Bernie Villegas agreed with Aboitiz, saying that mining would bring people out of poverty.
"Philippine poverty is a rural phenomenon; 70 percent of the Philippine poor are in the rural areas, which include the indigenous poor, especially in the most depressed areas — Caraga, most of Mindanao, Cagayan, Bicol, Eastern Visayas," he said.
He reiterated Dominguez’s stand that "there is very few opportunities that can jumpstart the economy. Agriculture in those places… will not bring people out of poverty and manufacturing is not feasible because there is no infrastructure. And so, since mining is usually in the boondocks, we really have to find some ways of implementing sustainable and equitable mining to bring people out of poverty."
Villegas also said the lack of capital prevents Filipino firms from venturing in big mining projects.
Felipe Alfonso, vice chairman of AIM’s Board of Trustees, who acted as the facilitator of the forum, concluded that despite the differences between the pro- and anti-mining groups, both parties are in agreement that the issues should be resolved.

Kadayawan markets DC
http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=13323
Tourism officer Id Acaylar said that Kadayawan is Davao City’s effective marketing tool to spread the word that the City is a peaceful and beautiful place to visit. “We’ve been using the Kadayawan as a marketing tool for six years already, to spread the good word of Davao,” said Acaylar.
Acaylar bared that three television networks with international coverage would be covering the event. The City Tourism officer bared the three networks as ABS-CBN, GMA and the Sonshine Television network of Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy.
He said that the three networks are broadcasted internationally and would offer to the world a glimpse of the annual August festivities dubbed as the Festival of festivals.
He said in the past, the Festival whose roots hails from the thanksgiving festivities practiced by Davao’s indigenous tribes, was primarily used as a tourism attraction, which would just entice tourists to come to the City.
As a marketing tool Kadayawan will tell a good impression of Davao as it would showcase the diverse beauty of Davao and also its peaceful and livable environment. “The perception of the people about Davao will change, when they see Kadayawan,” Acaylar said, “That is why the quality of the performances during the festival keeps getting better.
Since it would be beamed throughout the world and we want to impress them,” Acaylar added. Among the attractions of the festival includes the whole day street dancing, floral float parade, ethnic concerts, food street fiesta, agri-fairs, traditional indigenous horse rites and a festival pageant.

All bases were covered when the Philippines returned to China recently to make its pitch once again at the 3rd Beijing International Tourism Expo.
With inbound Chinese now venturing beyond their favored destinations in the Philippines—Pagsanjan and Tagaytay— and trooping farther into the islands for sun-and-sand respite, our Department of Tourism (DOT) was emboldened to highlight a specific haunt on this trip, to woo not just holiday-makers but investors.
Davao, the featured city, came prepared, with a 10-day Philippine food festival held at the Marco Polo Xidan, Beijing; a fashion and cultural show underscoring the province’s ethnic roots and honeymoon destination features; and a trade and investment presentation.
There’s reason for DOT’s optimism about this market. In 2004, China didn’t even count among the Philippines’ top 10 sources of tourist arrivals. By the following year, over 107,000 tourists (many of them repeat visitors) surpassed the DOT’s 70,000 Chinese arrival target, putting China in No. 5 spot. In the first quarter of this year, arrivals from the mainland had already exceeded Taiwan, making China No. 4. The target figure is 350,000 tourists from China by 2010.
The DOT largely credits its presence in Beijing for this development, two years since the establishment of a tourism office there.
“[Chinese travel operators] are focused on profits,” says tourism attaché Jazmin Esguerra. “Once you assure them of that, they’re really easy to deal with.”
The Philippine embassy in Beijing is also closely complementing DOT efforts. Incentives are awarded to specific tour groups, according to Ambassador Sonia Cataumber Brady. Visa applications can also be downloaded from the Internet now, and the Chinese enjoy a visa-upon-arrival scheme.
The envoy, whose last posting was Thailand, expressed her approval of the DOT’s endeavors. “You need money for what Thailand is doing,” she said. “We don’t have that... Let’s make do with what we have. The government is doing its best.”
Unlike the previous year when the DOT introduced new campaign collaterals in the capital city — posters in bus stops, clips on video walls, billboards— this time Tourism Secretary Joseph “Ace” Durano focused on new infrastructure for Chinese travelers.
In his speech to travel operators, he highlighted the shopping and entertainment destinations in Metro Manila and introduced the jeepney city tour. Dubbed “Hop In, Hop Off,” the tour has two routes: the Manila loop that covers the new SM Mall of Asia, the Cultural Center, the Coconut Palace, the Walled City and Luneta; and the Makati loop that plies Ayala, The Fort, Tiendesitas, and The Spa in Eastwood, Libis. A ride on one of these jeepneys costs around P150.
Davao as “most peaceful city”
Davao, for its part, stressed its sometime award as the “most peaceful city in Southeast Asia” and one of the “cleanest and greenest in the Philippines.” At present the city enjoys good Korean and domestic tourist arrivals, says Roberto Teo, head of the Davao Tourism and Investment Center.
The city mayor Rodrigo Duterte, once described by Time magazine as “the punisher” for his iron-fist management style, was prevented from joining this trip by his duties as head of the Presidential Anti-Terror Task Force. But the Davao contingent, with the head of city hall’s legal department, Melchor Quitain, did its best to make its presence felt in the Chinese capital.
On the invitation of the tourism attaché, Manila designer Renee Salud presented 25 pieces of T’Boli-inspired clothes, resort wear, contemporary evening gowns and bridal wear at the expo and the Philippine Tourism Conference at the Marco Polo Xidan. The show directed by Jackie Aquino highlighted both Davao’s tribal past and its modernity. The bridal wear modeled by five Filipina beauty queens (and two male models) emphasized Davao as a honeymoon destination, with performances by dancers of the Ramon Obusan Folkloric Group interspersed with the catwalk numbers.
An exchange on food
Three visiting Filipino chefs from Marco Polo Davao did more than introduce their Beijing sister hotel’s guests to Philippine cuisine. The trip turned into an exchange of know-how with their Chinese counterparts.
“They have very interesting presentation, and the food is good,” said Chef Swat, a sous chef at Xidan hotel’s Café Marco. “I can see that our Chinese guests would love the desserts,” he added, referring to a buffet spread that included leche flan, halo-halo, puto and suman.
The grilled seafood section was a hit with the guests, with its improvisation on Davao’s famed tuna belly. The kilawin station had a similar response: cooks from the South brought their own spin by mixing grilled pork and fresh fish.
But the Davao chefs had to make do with available ingredients while trying to be faithful to the original dishes’ flavor. The Chinese soy sauce, they complained, was “mapakla” (acrid); the vinegar too sweetish for Filipino dishes.
“If they want to serve our dishes here, they have to import the ingredients from us,” Frederick Carcedo, a sous chef at the Davao hotel, said in Filipino. “After all, that’s what we do when we hold international food fests back home; we import the ingredients. Only then can you get the real flavor.”
For his part, the chef of Marco Polo’s Chinese restaurant Lotus Court learned that dumplings are best boiled. “I realized that now, that when you steam a dumpling it shrinks,” said Nestor Cubradilla. “Their dumplings are all fresh. It’s like an assembly line, one is tasked to do each step. Even their dumpling wrappers are freshly made. When it’s frozen it loses flavor.”
“We’ve had visiting chefs in Davao, but we’ve never gotten this kind of response,” said Carcedo. “They’re attentive and quite willing to learn. They’re taking photos of the dishes... They didn’t know that you need flame to make banana leaves supple. They like that the dishes are flavorful.”
Smiling people and good food are, of course, the winning ingredients to entice the Chinese into our islands. And the DOT is confident that, in Beijing alone, there are enough tourists to go around.

From his bio as a fellow in Stanford University, Banico has proposed to "build a pipeline from open source software conceptualization by students within the university's information technology and entrepreneurship programs, to commercialization by entrepreneurs within the incubator."
I hope universities like AdDU (and the so-called big 4) would welcome SiliconGulf's brilliant ideas. They should work hand in hand with the country's development through R and D so that we as a country could advance 'technologically'. If I may say (opinion lang ha..walang magagalit) Universities should not merely help in breeding 'elite-thinking' and ''half-nationalistic' populace. Universities should go beyond their traditional role as diploma and degree distributors and should now realize the value of partnership with private individuals and entities in developing new opportunities and thus, at the end, help in the alleviation (and not prolongation) of poverty. I believe that all of us here in the forum are giving support to SiliconGulf!!! Mabuhay ka Mr. Banico!!!

Thanks for the support, Rajah. I am renewing contact with PLDT as well, hoping that their old building can be transformed into an ICT building that has not only corporate offices but also demonstration labs for students (AdDU and others) to get hands-on telco grade technologies. For now, the academe will have to "catch up" with what's out there. Eventually, they will lead industry as they continue to push the envelope.
Sana sana matuloy to. The AdDU-PLDT-MarcoPolo-Aldevinco area has lots of potential. If activated, it can energize the rest of the Claveria strip into an ICT district. (Even Maguindanao Hotel, on the other side of the strip, is going to look for call center tenants.)
It is an idea that I hope PLDT and its subsidiary, ePLDT, with its BPO companies, Vocativ, and its recent acquisition, SPi Technologies, will embrace.

I suppose the universities (Addu and others) already know about this project of yours considering that your proposals have been out in the press (many times now). Probably we here in the forum (together with Konsehal) can gather signatures 'to petition' for their 'proactive' support ? (our way of helping, what do you think? :)

Hi Jase,
I am willing to bet when (not if) you get Fr. Samson (ADDU President) on board he can, in turn, help to get PLDT on board also. After all, PLDT CEO Manny Pangilinan is Atenean and Fr. Samson was/is a fixture at ADMU and they most likely know each other and probably quite well. Manny Pangilinan is "maka-Ateneo". Sonny Dominguez, a principal of Marco Polo, is also Atenean (ADDU) - and I bet he also knows Mr. Pangilinan. The best of luck to you, Jason.

Rajah_Soliman July 14th, 2006, 09:25 PM Davao City Council urges residents to grow medicinal plants
Written by Walter I. Balane/MindaNews
Friday, 14 July 2006 08 00 40
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/13 July) -- Residents here would be asked to grow at least 10 kinds of indigenous medicinal plants in their backyards to ensure supply for their communities’ needs for herbal medicines, according to a resolution approved by the city council on July 11. The resolution, approved on second reading, adopted Project TAMBAL or “Tanom nga Medisina Bahandi sa Lawas,” (Medicinal Plants Precious to the Body) a community-based herbal medicine project aimed to address the “persistent social and health concern on the availability, or the lack of medicines in the health centers”.
The legislation would “encourage Davaoeños to seek traditional and alternative ways of health care through the use of herbal medicines, which are proven to be effective, safe, cost-efficient, and consistent with government standards of medical practice” according to the report of the council’s committee on health read in the session.
The plants that would be promoted for backyard gardening are Lagundi, Olasimang Bato, Bayabas, Bawang, Herba buena , Sambong, Ampalaya , Niyog-niyogan, Tsa-ang gubat, and Akapulko.
The committee report cited the 10 plants as “well-researched” and scientifically documented by scientists including those from the University of the Philippines College of Medicine.
The Philippine Institute of Traditional and Alternative Health Care (PITACH), an agency under the Department of Health, already created three medicines from the 10 plants, namely Lagundi for asthma, Tsa-ang gubat for abdominal pains, and Sambong for urinary kidney stones.
PITACH produces the herbal medicines from a plant in Davao City and sells them at P2 per tablet using raw materials from a plantation in Tacloban City.
The promotion of the growing of herbal plants in backyards could provide a “buffer” of supply, Anette Atanacio, a pharmacist at PITACH Davao told MindaNews.
Atanacio said there are already groups who are selling them raw materials. She said they have criteria for suppliers of herbal plants like handling and growing.
She said they would likely exchange raw materials from the community with supplies of herbal medicine tablets.
There is a growing demand for the use of herbal medicines in the local market, Atanacio said, citing a 100-percent increase in sales from 2004 to 2005.
But she said the move by the city government would really encourage people to use traditional and alternative ways of health care, and not just provide PITACH buffer supply of medicines.
“With herbal medicines in their backyards, the campaign by the city government would encourage people to learn and patronize indigenous medicines,” she said.
According to the resolution, Project TAMBAL “endeavors to make the different barangays in the City to be self-sustaining, self-reliant, and self-sufficient in their needs for herbal medicines.”
The resolution noted the role of herbal medicine not only in traditional health care but also in the culture, history, heritage, and consciousness of the Davaoeños.
The resolution was based on Republic Act 8423 or the Traditional and Alternative Medicine Act of 1997, which provides for the promotion and advocacy for the use of traditional, alternative, preventive and curative health care modalities.
The law provides for the formulation of policies for the protection of indigenous and natural health resources and technology from unwanted exploitation, for approval and adoption by the appropriate government agencies. It also provides for the formulation of policies to strengthen the role of traditional and alternative health care delivery system.
No implementing guidelines have been released yet but Councilor Gerald Bangoy told the city council on July 11 that the project has been going on in the 3rd district where Councilor Rene Elias Lopez comes from.
Bangoy and Lopez, both physicians, are proponents of the resolution. (Walter I. Balane/MindaNews)

Animo July 15th, 2006, 12:50 AM This means na wala na'y clamor for independence or mindanao republic?
I would rather have regions with greater autonomy than seced from the state. It would be chaotic enough with all the problems in the world. :)
ProblemSolver July 15th, 2006, 04:38 AM You're right! Magnetically Levitated Train is a bullet train with a speed of up to 300 miles per hour. It travels in a simple guideway unlike railway tracks. It doesn't make contact with guideway, hence the name LEVITATION due to opposing magnets from the guideway and the bottom part of the train so that it is frictionless and travels so fast. I think this is doable in the near future for the Davao regions because of businesses that are expanding. I personally can design the electromagnetics and the power electronics that controls these magnets. So, using the iron ores, magnetic ceramics, and some alloyed materials all available in the Davao regions especially in the Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur, construction for these trains, especially the magnetic guideways can be extremely cheap, a lot cheaper than the budgeted Northrail Project. In fact, a MultiCooperative, local governments, barangays, and the agricultural sectors could finance these project and pay it since it is so cheap to produce. It's a lot more cheaper than MRT/LRT which is powered by electricity. Electricity generation and rial track maintainance are expensive and therefore, riders pays higher commuting fares. The Magnetically Levitated Train doesn't need maintenance and the guideway is maintenance-free. It's not powered by electricity, it's powered by magnets. So it's a clean energy and it can get you faster to destination. So, I would think and I am confident that my concept designs are far more superior and a lot cheaper, all using indiginous materials, low-cost labor, and no electricity.
WawaY[625] July 15th, 2006, 05:00 AM whke the raw material are here, isnt it expensive to process them for use as maglev components? how about the other materials that arent produced here?

dati, when i was a kid (nung feeling ko paglaki ko magiging scientist ako, hehe) while playing a magnet naisip ko na pwede gamitin ang magnet as energy for vehicle kasi when positive plus positive poles or both negative poles pag itabi sila, kusang umiiwas. so para magamit ng train, kelangan ng magnetic track at magflofloat ang train.
ProblemSolver July 15th, 2006, 05:23 AM I have incorporated anticipated designs for extracted minerals to be processed by my conceptual low cost processing plant using alternative energy.
1. Alternative Steel Milling, or other metallic ores milling. My concept designs would provide a sleek and simple design process to produce/ melt iron ores to designed specification for guideways. These are small scale yet capable of delivering required construction for parts and guideways. Crushing these metallic ores would still require a crusher. I also incorporated concept design for construction of a crusher in a simple design. If smelted parts are available locally, it could shorten the process.
2. Nonmetallic and semi-metallic minerals such as magnetic ceramics can be treated similarly to alternative steel milling.
3. Plastic and rubber parts can be extracted with similar technology and designs above. Using Rapid Part Manufacturing, protypes and cores can be manufactured within 3 days time! My previous experience on SLA (steriolithographic) technology would allow this to get implemented.
4. For high and tight tolerance parts requiring tight specification, I also incorporated casting technology to get these parts fitted at extremely tigh tolerances. Casting technology uses similar designs as above.
So, a Multipurpose Cooperative could definitely handle these varying projects and at extremely low cost since crucial technologies and designs are already in place. It can be done in short period of time.

so, shall we call on Sta Ana Multpurpose Cooperative, King Coop, Silangan Coop, Agdao Coop and all major coops in Davao to take part on this project? also Nabunturan Integrated Coop, Tagum Cooperative, Bansalan Coop Society, USPD, Samal Island MPC and the list goes on... at least majority of the people will own this project instead of the govt or a private corp.
ProblemSolver July 15th, 2006, 05:47 AM All MultiCooperative in the area that are interested and have a stake in these projects are certainly welcome. From these MuiltiCooperatives, a focused regional multicooperative can be created to facilitate implementation of this project. If they needed feasibilities studies, I can certainly provide one or I can make several feasibility studies. These can be done in very short order. What is important is to gather consensus for these projects. Then we can budget these projects. Then implementation is coordinated to finish. Simultaneous and staggered project paces can be implemented and get fast tracked actions. The whole Davao regions benefits from these because, for the first time, a locally designed MAGLEV, locally financed projects, all using indiginous materials and minerals that are locally available, with emphasis on low cost yet proven technologies are being utilized to create expected jobs of about 2 million the first 5 years! Engineers will be trained in these technologies and the Multicooperative will demand more engineers in the future preferably up to PhD's level. Living standard in the region would rise up comparable to that of Japan. Downstream regional economic effects would trickle down in that over 10 million of the population would feel the spill-over effects.

since this is region-wide, i think for this to materialize, various sectors are needed. perhaps the Davao Integrated Devt Plan (under Wendell Avisado ba?) should take the lead in convening the following:
government side: inter-agency approach with Medco, DPWH, Local Govt Units, CDA, DOST, etc
beneficiary: the umbrella/regional cooperative and the riding public.
foreign aids: JICA, USAID, AUSAID, EU.
or
lending institutions: govt banks, foreign-banks
and most important of all, the engineers and consultants.

Manila Travel Guide!
Coming to visit Manila?
by JMD Abangan
SAN ISIDRO, Davao del Norte (14 July) — This two-year old fifth class municipality wants its cacao industry to make it big in the local and international markets.
“We dream of having a chocolate factory in San Isidro,” Mayor Tomas Abelita once said during the ASEAN Tourism Forum held in Davao early this year.
He brushed arms with ATF delegates in a dinner hosted by the provincial government of Davao del Norte. He offered visitors a cup of hot choco hoping to lure investors’ interest to buy his town’s cacao bean or its chocolate chunks locally known as “tablea.”
His dream is coming true.
Municipal Investment Promotion Officer Sonio Sanchez recently bared that local cacao traders, farmers and entrepreneurs together with a few well-meaning investors from Davao City are putting up a business they want to get officially registered as Chocolate’ de San Isidro (CSI), Inc.
“With the help of the Department of Trade and Industry, CSI,Inc. is due to get a registration from the Securities and Exchange Commission this month, Sanchez said.
With an initial capital of P1.3 million, CSI, Inc. will put up in this town, a factory capable of processing 250 kilos of cacao beans a day into about 12,500 dozens of chocolate chunks or tablea.
More than making profit, CSI, Inc. aims to help farmers get better price of their cacao beans. “CSI would be buying cacao beans at P75 per kilo. So even when the market price go down, our farmers get a better price at P75 a kilo,” Sanchez said.
Traders get cacao beans here at P65 to P68 per kilo and sell them in Davao City, Cebu, Leyte, Cagayan de Oro City to name a few places where cacao beans locally produced in San Isidro are being processed into chocolate chunks.
“So why don’t we produce tablea from the major source of cacao beans?” Sanchez said.
In a press conference during this town’s second founding anniversary on June 27, Sanchez disclosed himself as one of the local investors of CSI, Inc.
He envisions CSI, Inc. to grow under the management of local investors who have sympathy for local cacao farmers. “After all, ang mga small farmers ang ugat ng industriya, so tutulungan natin sila,” he said. “We don’t want to be succumbed by multi-national companies,” he added.
The small cacao farms of San Isidro make up this towns 3,600-hectare cacao industry, yielding an estimated 3,600 metric tons of cacao beans per hectare every year.
The local government of San Isidro is encouraging farmers to expand their cacao farms so it distributed seedlings especially in areas covered by the European funded project, Upland Development program (UDP).
Sanchez said UDP is helping San Isidro farmers organically grow cacao. “That would make our Chocolate’ de San Isidro of premium taste. Pure and organic,” he said.
Sanchez cited the birth of CSI, Inc. as one great accomplishment of the people of San Isidro and its local government as this surely sustains the local cacao industry, “thereby moving forward our municipality’s economy.
“With its declaration as a new municipality on June 27, 2004, San Isidro positioned itself as the “Chocolate Hub” of Davao del Norte aside from being a cavers’ paradise having been naturally endowed with spectacular caves.
It has also identified cacao as its competitive product, to the One-Town One-Product (OTOP) program designed to promote local entrepreneurial venture and jobs creation.
San Isidro featured during its first founding anniversary the largest tablea of 2.5 meters in diameter, weighing 500 kilos. This year, the town served the public with various delicacies and drinks made of tablea. (PIA)

Davao Norte promotes tourism "naturally"
by JMD Abangan
TAGUM CITY (15 July) -- Tourism in Davao del Norte is bound to take a leap as major industry players have agreed to promote the province using a catch phrase "Naturally Davao del Norte."
In an interview, Provincial Tourism Council president Alma Uy noted the potential of Davao de Norte to excel as an eco-tourism destination because "its endowed with beauty of nature."
Coming out from a planning workshop with members of Hugpong Dabaw Hanas sa Torismo (HUDAHATO), Uy positioned municipalities of the province with their respective potential as a tourist destination.
The Island Garden City of Samal a known tourist destination with its pristine white beaches among its come-on; Panabo City for its wide banana plantations; Carmen as a Second World War historical site where Dabawenyo guerillas together with American soldiers held in barangay Ising the last frontier of defense against Japanese forces; Tagum City as a Musikahan destination; Asuncion as a Kayaking destination; Kapalong as Cavers' capital; San Isidro as a chocolate hub and cavers' paradise; Sto. Tomas for its ecological park; Braulio E. Dujali--- New Corella for its Panas watershed; and Talaingod for its cultural village.
Davao del Norte will be making use of big brother-small brother concept of developing tourism industry, whereby each local government units will be complementing each other.
Citing as an instance, Uy said Tagum City will be spreading out tourist visits to nearby municipalities of Asuncion, Kapalong and Talaingod during annual celebration of Musikahan Festival in March.
"Because Tagum doesn't have the beauty of nature that these municipalities can offer to our visitors," she said.
As president of the Regional Tourism Council of Davao Region, Uy said Davao del Norte would serve as a role model for other provinces in the Region in terms of advancing local tourism.
"We will encourage other provinces to do the same," she said.
Meanwhile, HUDAHATO president Edna Parcon said tourism officers in the Davao del Norte sought to strengthen their organization.
Among their thrusts is to seek strong backing from their local chief executives of their tourism initiatives.
They are also appealing to LGU executives to officially designate a tourism officer and set up a separate tourism office to take on tourism related concerns, Parcon said.

Feasibilities Studies would show that the 4 major sub-projects leading to MAGLEV construction will have local financing affordability. I think that an expedited process can be attained using both simultaneous and staggered applications of these technologies. The "spill-over effects" in the local economy by these sub-projects (example: alternative energy or alternative steel milling) would be the capital accumulation by the MultiCooperative in that gains would be realized even at the delivery of say alternative energy to rate payers. The "spill-over effects" of steel milling would create another opportunities or create startups for fabricators, machine shops, construction sectors to benefit the finished products. Similarly, that of plastic/rubber production and metal casting. All these will spur gains for the multicooperative and considering that low cost or small capital has been applied to begin with, gains are geometrically proportional to output, hence capital accumulation. These capital then becomes the seed capitalization for the low cost construction of MagLev. Local government revenues will expand due to demands for permits and expanded tax base.
Technical feasibility studies would require my training of local mechnical and electrical engineers for these technologies, therefore, I would act both as a cooperative member and technical consultant. A local chemical engineer can be hired to produce designs based on my specifications.

Hubag Thavawenyoz 7/10 Alpha Music
Comprising 11 tracks of rap/hiphop music, this CD deserves an applause for having merged well the Southern Pinoy language and conventional samples–filled instrumentation of Western sound. The result is a Pinoy-flavored party music hiphoppers, and even the pure Manileños, will find interesting.
The track "Mao Kaha Kini Ang Gugma" achieved this in the finest way because of its suave arrangement and catchy chorus run which are absent in other titles like "Land Of Promise" and "Jeep (Uso-Uso). Other radio-friendly tracks are "Tuba," "Para Sa’yo" and, of course, "Hubag" which won this year’s 2006 Awit Awards for Best Regional Recording.

davaoeagle July 15th, 2006, 08:46 AM Isla Era: Not just another reggae band
http://www.manilastandardtoday.com/?page=goodLife09_july15_2006
By NRJ Ramos
COMING from the Durian-rich, tourist friendly island of Davao, Dennis Ceballos, 23 perfectly understands why people often mistook their band as a one-dimensional reggae group. Although, he admits there’s reggae in their sound, they could also be “funky and hard rock too.”
How did you get together?
We were friends from way back, Marcus (Resma, 21, Bassist) and I. A few years ago we decided to form a band. We were introduced to Toto (Sumagaysay, 23, drummer) and we started jamming. Zeloi (Catedrillo, 21, vocals) came in after a while and Isla Era was born.”
What’s with the name?
The Isla part came from this place in Davao that we used to frequent, which as you would’ve guessed it, is called “Isla.” “Era” meanwhile, is a term we added to connote a sense of “time” or “period” for the band, which is, of course, the here and now.
Sounds like…
We sound like no other. We try to combine our individual musical influences. Though our name might make one think we are just another reggae band, there’s more to it than that. As Davaeños, we have an innate sound that’s reminiscent of the island and of its people. Then again, we can also be funky and we can rock hard, too.
Who are your influences?
We love listening to Bob Marley, 311, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and a lot of other Pinoy bands, specially Wolfgang. We also love listening to the classics… Rey Valera and all that.
How were you discovered?
We were playing at this bar back in Davao and a couple of executives from Ivory Music saw us. Apparently they saw some potential in one of our original song entitled, “Bughaw, Pula’t Dilaw” and decided to sign us up.
Currently busy doing…
We’re heading back to Davao to do this big event on July 15 to be held at SM Supermall Davao. After that we’ll also do the rounds of bars and clubs there. We are also promoting our single “Gusto Kita Pero Di Kita Mahal.” It’s a cool song. Also, we just finished a slew of promotional activities around the greater Manila area, including some TV guestings, radio tour, mall tour for our self-titled debut, which by the way is already out in music bars nationwide. Check it out.
Where can we catch you playing live?
Well, you could visit Davao anytime (laughs). We play in a lot of clubs and bars there. Seriously though, we’re planning to go back to Manila soon to play gigs and stuff. We love it there. Still, you can watch our videos as they are already in rotation on MYX, Me TV, ZPDee and MMS on QTV.
How do we get in touch with the band?
Easy. Just join our yahoogroups, islaEra@yahoogroups.com.

Classic Musical Concert Marks 50 Years Of Philippines-Japan Friendship Three outstanding artists from Japan will perform in a classic musical concert on Wednesday, July 19, 2006 at six o’clock in the evening, at the CAP Development Center.
They are lady pianist Rie Nishimoto and two gentlemen singers, Tadamasa Fukiura, a historian; and Hiroyuki Kawai, A lawyer. The concert celebrates the 50th anniversary of Philippines-Japan Friendship (the normalization of diplomatic relations between the two countries).
The major sponsors of the concert are Japan Philippine Industry Council (JPIC) of Fukushima, Japan; the Philippine Nikkei-Jin Legal Support Center (PNLSC) in Tokyo; and the Philippine Nikkei-Jin Kai, Inc., the Philippine International School, and the Mindanao Kokusai Daigaku (Mindanao International College), all in Davao City. History of Philippines-Japan Relation: The diplomatic relations between the Philippines and Japan started as early as 1888.
During those times, Japan established its diplomatic office in Manila, The said office was expanded to a consulate-general in 1919 to entertain consular matters and concerns of Japanese immigrants in Davao and Manila. World War 11 found the two countries on opposing sides. Subsequently the consular office was declared an embassy under the wartime 2nd republic.
After reparations agreements were signed by both countries, Japan formally established its embassy in Manila on July 23, 1956. The office was transferred to Makati and in 1997, the bigger chancery was moved to Roxas Boulevard in Pasay City.
The first ambassador of Japan to the Philippines was Ambassador Koichi Asaumi and the first Ambassador of the Philippines to Japan was Ambassador Felino Neri. 2006 marks the 50th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between our country and Japan.
In support of the commemoration of the milestone, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo signed in January this year Proclamations no. 854 and 905 declaring July 23, 2006 as Philippines-Japan Friendship Day and the 2006 as Philippines-Japan Friendship Year.
The classic musical concert of the three Japanese artists is a part of the year long series of activities in Tokyo, Manila, and Davao celebrating the 50th anniversary of Philippines-Japan Friendship.

davaoeagle July 15th, 2006, 09:45 AM A History of University of Mindanao College of Law
Published : 2006-07-13
In 1946, barely a year after the end of the last world war, the noble idea of some Davao pioneers to establish a private educational institution in what was then perceived as a much growing part of the country was realized with establishment of the Mindanao Colleges in Davao City with humble beginnings.
The pioneering fathers and mothers of the institution like Atty. And Mrs. Guillermo “Bering” Torres, Atty. And Mrs. Pedro Quitain, Dra. Concepcion (Panganiban) de Asis, Atty. And Mrs. Jesus Occeña, Engr. And Mrs. Pedro Torres and others were concerned much in expanding the new school’s places of coverage in Davao City and other places but also in establishing other colleges to cover more than the traditional fields like education, commerce, liberal arts and engineering but also to other educational pursuits thus, barely two years from the birth of the school, the college of law in 1948 was founded as the first law school in Mindanao at the MC Campus and later at the Panulcialman building also at Bolton Street.
The said pioneers were impressed with the growth of the school in other areas of education from elementary grades to high school and the existing colleges but also perceived the need of lawyers in this growing part of the country and the existence of potential lawyers around consisting of young persons and those whose studies were interrupted for almost four years by World War II.
Many indeed took up law, passed the bar examinations and became successful citizens not only of this City but also of their respective provinces and of the country.
Some did not finish the course but became successful in life like the late Senator Alejandro Almendras who was in the school for sometime but his law study was interrupted when as a second year law student, he joined politics to become the governor of then whole Davao Province, which included Davao City. He also became secretary of the Department of General Services and he was succeeded by alumnus, Atty. Teotimo Aguilar (Class 1958).
The college of law started with its dean, then presiding judge of a sala of the Court of First Instance of Davao with Atty. Pedro C. Quitain, as the school secretary. The judge’s stint was cut short. Atty. Quitain was appointed as the dean of the College of Law who continued to act as such for about the next twenty-three years until he was appointed as a judge in the Court of First Instance in Masbate in 1971. Dean Quitain was known for his being a strict disciplinarian but was very understanding and concerned of his students.
He was followed by Dean Jose Kimpo, an old-time professor and educator. He took his pre-law course as a future educator at the Philippine Normal College, took law at the Philippine Law School and placed 11th in the 1934 Bar Exams.
He was dean of law for several years and was followed by Congressman Cornelio Mascariño who was followed by Dena Bonifacio Militar who in turn was followed in 1994 by Dean Jose C. Estrada who after six years was followed by Dean Melchor V. Quitain who is back as the present dean after succeeding Dean Pepito Manriquez.
The first graduates, CLASS 1952 numbered about 13 lawyers (Ricardo Bacaltos, Felix Belches, Avelina Carin, Niclas Catiil, Armando Dominguez, Reinerio Garcia, Gonzalo Latorilla, Cesar Nuñez, Mauricio Ypilan, Laureano Calloo, Sofronio Torrefiel, Hospecio Dagohoy and Antonio Cabanyog) and all passed the 1952 bar examinations.
Prominent among them was Atty. Armando Dominguez who became a partner in his brother’s (Charlie Dominguez) law office and a successful practitioner. Atty. Nicolas Catiil who became a Davao City and later a Manila City Assessor. He just died recently as the last remaining member of Class 1952.
Another member of Class 1952 was Major Mauricio Ypilan of the Davao City finest and was a prominent educator himself. Its professional staff was joined by prominent personalities. Among whom were the late Judges Dominador Zuño, Sr., Jesus Occeña, Gumesardo Arcilla and the late City Councilors, Blasito Angeles (a fourth BAR Placer 1947) and councilor and later Congressman Artemio Loyola. Garcia, Jr,. who later became the first dean of the Ateneo Law School in Davao City, and the late Davao vice-governor and Davao City vice-mayor, Manuel “Noli” C. Sotto.
Professor and Ex-Judge Hermigildo Cabreros elected as the second president of the then Davao del Sur – Davao City IBP chapter taught for several years therein as a civil law professor. Atty. Juan Faune was professor for several years and a World Council of Churches leading figure.
In 1965, Mindanao Colleges became a university. In 1981, it had its Law Alumni first grand homecoming. In 1998, the law school celebrated its golden anniversary with Dean Emiritus Pedro C. Quitain as guest speaker. The UM Law Alumni Association recently has been formally registered as a corporate entity with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Many graduates of the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s and even of the first years of the 21st century became prominent practitioners, prosecutors, government officials and even judges. One became a President of the RTC judges association and later a justice of the Court of Appeals, MARIANO UMALI (Class 1 957). Atty. Cesar S. Here is a suggestion from a foreigner living in Davao regarding the Kadayawan parade route.
"I hope Mr. Peter Lavina will see that the Parade Route and location of Judges Stand will be shown on a Map published in several newspapers so that tourists and others unfamiliar with Davao will know where to position themselves. That has not been done in prior years. The parade route map, even on cheap newsprint paper, could be made available on Hotel lobby desks, at better restaurants and shopping locations. It could contain advertising " . . . And after the Parade be sure to stop at XYZ Resaurant for a Cool Drink and the best food in Davao"

"I will also go back to Davao this coming month for a project. The trip means a lot to me because August is when we celebrate Kadayawan, and it’s been so long since I went back there for the occasion. It is definitely something I’m looking forward to. I assure you I will tell you all about this trip. Have a Great Sunday!"
Birthdays are usually not something I look forward to.
I’ve never really been the type to celebrate or make such a big deal out of my own birthday. It’s ironic because I’ve always wanted to make others’ birthdays celebrated extra special. Other people’s birthdays seem to excite me more than my own.
Last year, I celebrated my birthday in a Filipino restaurant in Glendale, California. I would consider that one of my most frustrating celebrations. My sister couldn’t even sing me a song inside the restaurant’s karaoke bar just because I was underage!
I was a " day late and a dollar short," as my sister always teased me. It just wasn’t quite the right time for me to really party and enjoy my birthday.
It was my birthday a few days ago and I’m finally 21! This was the most anticipated-birthday of the year for my friends and me.
Most of my friends are a few years older than me and we couldn’t be more excited for anything else than bringing me into a bar in the States. I can’t wait!
I’m officially calling this a "forever 21st" birthday. It just seems so much more different to do things when you’re 21.
I feel a bit more responsible for my actions now.
The only thing I really wanted for this birthday was to see fireworks.
I know this sounds weird for some, but this is honestly what I wanted. Having lived in the States for a few years, I only saw fireworks on certain holidays, in certain places, and shown for a very limited amount of time.
I never really got enough of it. I celebrated my New Year’s Eve for the first time in Manila, and the fireworks overwhelmed me. It felt so nice watching all the colorful lights bursting their way up into the sky. It went on for about an hour or so. But I just couldn’t get enough of it.
I really just wanted to see fireworks for my 21st birthday. It symbolized a new chapter in my life just as it meant a new year to look forward to.
It has been raining a lot recently and I didn’t expect, imagine, or even hope to see fireworks up in the sky! But like I said, some people just seem to give a lot of importance to other people’s birthdays. My friends set up a fireworks display. I felt like crying!
Who does fireworks for his birthday? It’s crazy.
I didn’t think my friends took my wish too seriously!
It was amazing. I couldn’t explain how special I felt knowing that the rain didn’t prevent them from doing that for me.
I still have butterflies in my stomach now remembering the moment they surprised me. Now, that was unforgettable!
I couldn’t thank everyone enough for making such an effort to make this celebration special. I’ll be flying back to the States in a few weeks, and I can’t wait to take my sister out to the "21 and over" places. Sigh.
I’m also hoping to run after Brandon Routh, the new Superman, sometime during my trip. I think he’s hot.
The movie was awesome. I actually saw it a few days before my birthday. I’ve always found those superhero movies cheesy, but since I saw X-Men The Last Stand, I became more interested and decided to watch Superman.
I couldn’t really relate much to the story because I don’t really know the background. But I felt the movie was made tastefully you wouldn’t want to miss a minute of it.
I was able to understand the story fully. So hopefully, I find Superman flying around when I go back to the States this time around.
I will also go back to Davao this coming month for a project.
The trip means a lot to me because August is when we celebrate Kadayawan, and it’s been so long since I went back there for the occasion.
It is definitely something I’m looking forward to. I assure you I will tell you all about this trip. Have a Great Sunday!

davaoeagle July 15th, 2006, 10:32 PM Pichay lauds Davao talents
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan
SURIGAO Representative Prospero "Butch" Pichay Saturday lauded Davao City woodpushers including newly-installed International Master (IM) Oliver Dimakiling during the press launch of the 2006 National Inter-Cities and Municipalities Chess Team Championship at the Spazio, 3rd floor, of Gaisano Mall of Davao.
Pichay, who assumed presidency of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) five months ago, said: "Dimakiling is one of the most outstanding players we have in the country. He is one of the best players in the World Chess Olympiad in Turin, Italy. He is the biggest revelation there."
The NCFP chief said Dimakiling had chances to draw two of his matches in the recent Olympiad.
"But he (Dimakiling) opted to go on playing and fight with the hope of winning a point for the Philippines. He sacrificed the GM (Grand Master) norm he could have earned if he accepted the draws. You must be proud of him," Pichay said.
He also cited close to 20 kiddie chessers who participated in the simul blitz against National Master (NM) Jonathan Tan.
He said, "There is no reason for Davao not to produce another Oliver Dimakiling or future champions. I've seen the positions of the kids in the simul blitz. They have a lot of potentials."
Thus, Pichay offered Davao City to host a national open in an effort to boost the potentials of local players and hone their skills.
"I'm making an offer to Davao to host a national open. If you can raise P250,000 for it, I will add another P250,000. If you have P300,000, I'll give another P3000,000. It's up to you if you want it to be a national or international open," he told city councilor Leonardo Avila III and city sports coordinator Christopher "Bong" Go who represented Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte during the press launch.
Pichay said the Davao tournament will be a FIDE-rated event, adding, "It will give players like Jimmy Dano and other players who have beaten NMs, IMs and GMs to also earn titles."
The chess patron thanked Mayor Duterte for supporting the development of chess as a sport in the city.
davaoeagle July 15th, 2006, 10:33 PM On Golden Wings of Dance
THE Bayanihan National Folk Dance Company of the Philippines will delight Davao with a premier presentation of "On Golden Wings of Dance" on August 18 at the Central Bank Auditorium.
There will be two shows on this premiere shows: Matinee at 2 p.m. and Gala at 6 p.m.
As one of the highlights of the 2nd PWU-PWC Global Alumni Congress and Reunion in Davao City, Bayanihan will again showcase its incredible originality, visual beauty and theatrical excitement.
More than 39 performers and directors from Manila will be coming down to Davao for the performance of their entirely new repertoire, which is scheduled for showing in their coast-to-coast tour in the USA under Columbia Pictures.
The Davao performance is one of the most anticipated shows this year as the dance company prepares for its Golden Jubilee next year.
During the past 50 years, Bayanihan has performed thousands of times before millions of people in six continents, 60 countries and nearly 500 cities worldwide; through 14 world tours and over a hundred shorter international tours and in performances too numerous to count for Filipino audiences in our beloved Philippines.
Since the company's auspicious debut at the Brussels Universal Exposition in 1958 in Belgium and even greater triumph on Broadway's Winter Garden Theater, New York, Bayanihan has become the Philippines' -- and the Filipinos' -- cultural ambassadors to the World and earned the distinction of being the Philippine National Folk Dance Company through Republic Act 8626.
Bayanihan has also earned many "firsts."
It is the first Filipino group to break into Broadway and the first non-American dance company to perform at the New York State Theater of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts; the first Filipino cultural group to perform in Russia and PROC; the first to make an in-depth tour of South America; the first Filipino dance company to perform at the World Showcase Millennium Village EPCOT, Disneyworld, Florida; and the only Filipino dance company to receive the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay award for international understanding.
Inquiries on the event may be directed to the Alumni Relations Office at PWC of Davao, 082-299-3339, or visit the website: www.globalpwupwc.com and email us at pwupwcglobal_dvo@yahoo.com

Davao City (13 July) -- With the staging of the Kadayawan Festival this coming August 14-21, Davao City Tourism officer Id Acaylar said that Kadayawan is Davao City's marketing tool to spread the word that the City is a peaceful and beautiful place to visit.
"We've been using the Kadayawan as a marketing tool for six years already, to spread the good word of Davao." said Acaylar.
He said in the past, the Festival whose roots hails from the thanksgiving festivities practiced by Davao's indigenous tribes, was primarily used as a tourism attraction, which would just entice tourists to come to the City.
As a marketing tool Kadayawan will tell a good impression of Davao as it would showcase the diverse beauty of Davao and also its peaceful and livable environment. "The perception of the people about Davao will change, when they see Kadayawan." Acaylar said,
"That is why the quality of the performances during the festival keeps getting better. since it would be beamed throughout the world and we want to impress them." Acaylar added.
Among the attractions of the festival includes the whole day street dancing, floral float parade, ethnic concerts, food street fiesta, agri-fairs, traditional indigenous horse rites and a festival pageant. (PIA) [top]

Davao City (15 July) -- Public Works and Highways secretary Hermogenes Ebdane Jr. who took the reigns of the Department of Public Works and Highways in February last year (2005) inspected various road and bridge projects in Padada and Malita in Davap del Sur to make sure that contractors would take the responsibility for whatever problems the project may encounter.
Secretary Ebdane, who was the guest speaker during the official induction of the Minsupala Integrated Journalists Inc. held at the Royal Mandaya hotel immediately conducted the ocular inspection of the different projects the following day after that night's Minsupala activity.
Together with Secretary Ebdane were: DPWH ASEC for Mindanao operations Rafael Yabut; DPWH central office IBRD director Mario Bandelaria; IBRD; DPWH XI director Dimas Soguilon; DPWH XI ARD Pundidato Mitmug, Al Haj; Engr. Ely Camerino, Material Quality Control division chief, DPWH XI; Engr. Rodrigo Larete, construction section chief of DPWH Davao del Sur 2nd district; Jun Velasco, Manila Bulletin journalist; Ben Diansay, Minsupala president; and other foreign project consultants.
Secretary Ebdane emphasized to his men the need to practice an "on-the-ground" policy in performing their role and in achieving the objectives of the agency and reach out to citizens and communities to build a public works community network for feedback and resource mobilization.
Ebdane, during his inspection, told his men to deliver a more efficient and effective physical network of roads, bridges, and infrastructures that will connect communities and speed up the socio-economic development in every region of the country in an effort to implement the 10-point agenda of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo particularly in her poverty alleviation program.
Bridges in Southern Mindanao are in danger due to old age, obsolete design and increasing volume of water in the region's river systems.
The region has 248 bridges constructed by the DPWH and hundreds more constructed by local government units.
The 249 bridges built by the DPWH in Southern Mindanao were designed to last for only 25 to 30 years. But at least half the number of bridges has gone beyond their supposed age limit. (PIA)

nice project update TJ... unti-unti nang nagkakaroon ng build-up dyan sa may sm area... yung pinost ko na U/C beside marikina exchange (tulip drive) techno trade resources pala yon, 1st building is in agdao.
this coming thursday onwards.. according to our admin avisado, starts the balling of trees from the ayala group inside the old PTA or Davao Greenbelt. initially 300 trees (already 10 feet tall average) will be planted, but 2,000 trees are expected to be transferred this year. sabi nga nya magiging instant forest ang Davao Greenbelt this year. WOW! the only city i guess na magkakaroon ng forest sa central business district. once completed it will have pipe-in music, fountains, underground cables and pipes for electricity and sprinklers, and other amenities but no commercial establishments at least for the time being. heaven ito sa mga joggers and walking-walking lovers at dawn or even at night time. saludo ako sa project na ito...
and also, 50,000 pcs additional garbage bins are expected to be purchased not 20,000 as earlier reported to boost the garbage segregation scheme of the city gov. another project only davao city can administer well. clean and green city of davao! yeheeey!

melon July 17th, 2006, 05:07 AM Ateneo, at least, is all for it, Rajah. :) It's just a matter of planning the appropriate timing along with their other activities lined up...
The engineering department of Ateneo has a research facility but not that well-funded and supported by the university, but the people there are very talented and brilliant, I'm sure they could be of great help only if well supported. Medyo behind pud atong mga universities with our curriculum and projects, not that updated with the current technology, puro basic. After graduating, we still have a lot to learn to catch up. Maybe with the help of IT companies, there would be mutual contribution. The companies would provide the universities with the latest trend in technology, and the funds and tools, and the universities could align their research and projects on the needs of those companies. And the cycle would go on and on...

ProblemSolver July 17th, 2006, 05:53 AM I would be looking forward to embarking into R&D, but at this time, to accumulate capital the fastest way is embark into direct technology applications such as what I have highlighted in order to rapidly create gains. melon, what is your line of work as an electrical engineer? I am also looking forward to align somone like you as a project proponent in Direct Solar-to-Power core design, specifically a 24 kW alternator design and construction to begin with. Also, if you are interested to forming a MultiCooperative embarking into solar projects, the electrical design side of steel mills, rubber/plastics processing and the metal casting technologies, you are mostly welcome. Also, invite your professional buddies if they have similar interests. I can be reached below email:

If you need more research on those fields, maybe we could coordinate with Ateneo engineering department and focus their projects and research on those area. The department head is a great pal of mine, no problem :D
My field of study is on power engineering (high power generation, distribution, etc) but my field of work is on digital electronics.. go figure :D
ProblemSolver July 17th, 2006, 06:52 AM The following areas for short-term implementations are in the following subjects:
1. Alternator Design and Construction. (EE Department)
2. Stirling Engine Design and Construction to match 1. (ME Department)
3. Design, Construction and Assembly of Machine Tooling for Grinding, Turning, Drilling, etc in an Integrated and Semi-Integrated towards Automation. (EE, ME, ECE, POWER ELCTRONICS).
4. Amplifier Design for Automation (My design is already established on this one).
More expanded designs are needed to build lab equipment, instrumentations and data acquisition. (ME, EE. Analog/Digital Department)
5. Machining and Assemblies. (ME)
6. Metal Forming and Casting. (ME)
7. Alternative Heating Elements Designs and Plasma-based heat transfer. (ME, ChemE.)
I have initial design on this one but I'd be giving directions on these ones).
8. Materials Processing (Metallic, SemiMetallic, NonMetallic) - (ME/Material Science Eng.)
For most of the part, I will probably be giving the most of the guidance and directions, however, since the basic and fundamentals of engineering are deeply ingrained perhaps in Ateneo Departments, it's probably their directions.
I'd be open to coordinate with Ateneo on all the above subjects.

Ady001 July 17th, 2006, 08:13 AM hello pis, Im back again!
You've got excellent warped pics Junax. Ang Digos diay no murag matina heheh
Ady001 July 17th, 2006, 08:15 AM ^^ good evening davao!!!
nice project update TJ... unti-unti nang nagkakaroon ng build-up dyan sa may sm area... yung pinost ko na U/C beside marikina exchange (tulip drive) techno trade resources pala yon, 1st building is in agdao.
this coming thursday onwards.. according to our admin avisado, starts the balling of trees from the ayala group inside the old PTA or Davao Greenbelt. initially 300 trees (already 10 feet tall average) will be planted, but 2,000 trees are expected to be transferred this year. sabi nga nya magiging instant forest ang Davao Greenbelt this year. WOW! the only city i guess na magkakaroon ng forest sa central business district. once completed it will have pipe-in music, fountains, underground cables and pipes for electricity and sprinklers, and other amenities but no commercial establishments at least for the time being. heaven ito sa mga joggers and walking-walking lovers at dawn or even at night time. saludo ako sa project na ito...
and also, 50,000 pcs additional garbage bins are expected to be purchased not 20,000 as earlier reported to boost the garbage segregation scheme of the city gov. another project only davao city can administer well. clean and green city of davao! yeheeey!
I watched Gikan sa masa para sa masa yesterday and Avisado said that the trees will be adapted from theclimate of the highlands to the downlands, since they're from EDEN.

maayo if they will throw support this time. i have read this controversy year ago pa and i guess it was their big strategic mistake to allow globe get the exclusive ad rights. unsa pud kaha ang treatment sa city government sa ila after then...

ProblemSolver July 17th, 2006, 06:49 PM Oh, I see your point about Water Treatment Facility. I think that was part of my technical recommendation as part of tech progress. Anyways, it can be done locally and can be built locally.
My idea on Water Treament Facility is that of a large holding tank capable of handling/receiving about 20 mllions gpd. There will be several sewage pumping stations to pump these sewage water into the holding tank. The holding tank is divided into 4 stages, incoming sewage water, solids-sewage water separation stage, sewage water breakdown to methane gas thru anaerobic method and remaining water is chlorinated and cleaned for return to the river or reuse as drinking water, and solids are decomposed. Methane gas is pumped into gas power plant to produce electricity and a methane gas tank for use as an LPG. Decomposing solids becomes organic fertilizer.
So, if you are interested to join as one proponent for a MultiCooperative, be part of it and become a member. Encourage others to join as well. This sewage treatment facility design can be duplicated all through out Davao Regions and beyond.

Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 03:59 AM ^^ Problem Solver, you have great ideas in store. If Konsehal will just mix this one up with the compactors and the garbage segregation thingie they're making in the city, maybe we might have something that'll rival Puerto Princesa (the cleanest place probably in the Philippines.)
Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 04:01 AM On the other hand, hello again guys. Ambot lang if I can be available for the EB hehehe... not for now :D :D :D. Anyway, can anybody post pics of Davaoeno Jeeps? I think Davao has the only kind of jeeps in the whole Philippines that have a "route band" in the sides. The route band is a colored strip which indicates where the jeep will pass. I haven't seen anything like it in other places but in Davao.
junax July 18th, 2006, 04:11 AM ^^ good morning to all!!!
news update:
1. last night i saw construction of the modern traffic lights along toril intersection, sa tingin ko from outskirts to downtown ang pattern ng installation. toril to downtown, panacan to downtown.
2. on sched ang Davao Greenbelt this thursday (10 feet tall trees will be transferred), 2,000 trees are expected to be planted para maging forest talaga ang dating. ang sarap kung ganito na ang former PTA grounds...
http://i46.photobucket.com/albums/f142/kododoy/greenbelt.jpg
3. access roads from calinan to toril and calinan to bunawan/tibungco are now connected and passable according to duterte himself. in the future magiging expressway natin ito.
4. with the construction of ulas-flyover, engineers/planners are often seen in the area at night.
5. some major intersections are getting fresh asphalt overlay and road markings. i hope the LTO-boulevard overlaying is just the beginning of a total overhaul.
6. building under constructions, although most are lowrises (2 to 6 storeys), are slowly filling up in agdao, downtown, ecoland, and buhangin area.
Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 04:33 AM About no. 3 Junax, where is the intersection point?
junax July 18th, 2006, 04:42 AM ^^ that i'm not so sure. calinan or mintal? but i'm sure it has access in brgy. mahayag ang bago...
Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 04:49 AM ^^ Wait a second, an Ulas Flyover? :D Will the flyover be similar to that of Agdao's?
junax July 18th, 2006, 05:12 AM i hope it will be circular like bajada, but most likely it will look like agdao.
Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 05:16 AM That would be impossible like Bajada's; you need a wide space and an uphill to make one...
Ady001 July 18th, 2006, 05:22 AM Last post ko na to for this session...
Does anybody have an idea for Museo De Davao? What will happen to the Davao museum in Lanang?
davaoeagle July 18th, 2006, 05:34 AM ^^ Wait a second, an Ulas Flyover? :D Will the flyover be similar to that of Agdao's?
I think with an earmarked amount of 504 Million, that one would be similar to the one in Ortigas? he he, kidding aside, it must be more complex than the existing ones.
davaoeagle July 18th, 2006, 07:17 AM Canadian firm renews bid for North Davao Mining
By Rocel C. Felix
The Philippine Star 07/18/2006
Crew Mineral Philippines Inc. (CMPI), the local unit of Canadian mining company Crew Gold which controls Apex Mining Co. Inc. (Apex) in Compostela Valley North Davao, is reviving plans to bid for North Davao Mining Corp. (NDMC) which is scheduled for privatization this year by Natural Resources Mining Development Corp. (NRMDC).
"It will be advantageous to government if Apex is finally allowed to operate it, something will happen tomorrow because we are already there and we have all the facilities and the workforce," said CMPI managing director Leo Cleto A. Gamolo.
Gamolo said CMPI is in the best position to bid for NDMC because Apex’s existing minerals production plant is within the Compostela Valley. Apex and NDMC however, are locked in a legal dispute because their mining claims overlap each other. The case has been pending with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau’s regional arbitration panel since 1998.
NRMDC president Artemio Disini said earlier however, that the privatization of NDMC will push through, adding the legal tussle is not seen to significantly affect the turnout of bidders since more than 15 investors revived their interests in buying NDMC, especially with the transfer in recent months of NDMC’s trusteeship from the Privatization Management Office to the NRMDC.
Prior to its closure in 1992, NDMC operated an open pit mining copper mining project in Maco, Compostela Valley. Its assets were then transferred to the Asset Privatization Trust (APT) which is now the PMO, at a price of P4.7 billion. Parts of these assets have been disposed by the PMO.
Disini said there are still substantial copper reserves in the area. It has remaining copper reserves of 65 million metric tons with a grade of 0.34 percent copper and gold reserves of 1.1 million MT with a grade of five grams gold per ton of ore.
CMPI, as early as 2004, offered $3 million or about P150 million for NFMC.
"That was just the upfront money. We were willing to negotiate for the royalty. They were putting it up for bidding but there were no takers because NRMDC still had to update geological data, we were still rejected though," said Gamolo.
Gamolo said acquiring NDMC is part of the long-term investment plan of CMPI.
"We are interested in North Davao because of the mine’s general potential. It is in a gold district area that’s why we were willing to risk $3-million upfront. And I think that was the biggest offer they (NRMDC) received."
He disclosed that CMPI is also willing to strike a settlement with NDMC to finally resolve their long-drawn mining claims dispute.
CMPI and its Filipino partners, Mapula Creek bought a combined 72 percent of Apex in 2000 while 28-percent is listed in the stock exchange.
Last year, CMPI started the rehabilitation of Apex, mines which along with NDMC, was shut down in the early 1990s when metal prices crashed. The rehabilitation is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Joel M. Muyco, resident manager of Apex, said that while the rehabilitation work is ongoing, the company is still continuing its exploration work.
davaoeagle July 18th, 2006, 07:21 AM Workers in Regions 1, 9, 11 get pay hike
By James Mananghaya
The Philippine Star 07/18/2006
Workers in Pangasinan and Ilocos provinces would receive an increase in their basic wages ranging from P15 to P25, the regional office of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) announced yesterday.
DOLE Ilocos regional director Guerrero Cirilo said the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board (RTWPB) issued Wage Order No. 11 last July 14, which integrated the P12 cost of living allowance into the basic pay, which was previously provided for by Wage Order No. 10, and added new adjustments ranging from P3 to P13.
Cirilo said that the Region 1 wage board conducted the hearings on the possible wage hike on a motu propio basis, or through their own initiative.
During the hearings, representatives from the employers sector proposed a status quo position on a P10 wage adjustment and other alternative approaches to increasing wages such as profit sharing schemes and other non-wage benefits.
Wage board secretary Exequiel de Guzman said the new wage hike takes effect 15 days after it is published in a newspaper of general circulation.
Meanwhile, Labor Secretary Arturo Brion said yesterday that the wage boards in Regions 9 (Western Mindanao) and 11 (Davao Region) have approved new minimum wage rates increasing the daily wages of private sector minimum wage earners in the two regions.
Brion said the two wage boards initiated a review of the prevailing minimum daily wages rates in their respective regions and granted pay hikes without waiting for petitions for wage increase.
He said that the RTWPB-11 in Davao Region issued Wage Order No. 11-13 granting P16 COLA per day to minimum wage earners regardless of their position, designation, or status of employment and the method by which their salaries are paid.
The wage order also integrated to the basic pay the previous P15 daily COLA granted under Wage Order No. 12 issued last year by RTWPB-11.
Brion noted that RTWPB-11 issued the new wage order on its own initiative in light of the economic realities brought about by the successive increases in oil and petroleum prices leading to increases in transport fare and prices of goods and services.
Brion said the wage board did not wait for labor groups in Davao to file petitions for a wage increase.
Under the new wage order, the new daily minimum wage rates in the cities of Davao, Digos, Island Garden of Samal, Panabo, and Tagum will be P240 for workers in non-agricultural establishments, P230 for workers in plantation sites with more than 24 hectares and employing at least 20 workers, P209 for workers in non-plantation sites, and P209 for those in the retail and service sector employing not more than 10 workers.
In the provinces of Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, and Compostela Valley, the new daily minimum wage rates will be P238 for workers in non-agricultural establishments, P228 for workers in plantation sites with more than 24 hectares and employing at least 20 workers, P207 for workers in non-plantation sites, P238 for those in the retail and service sector employing more than 10 workers; and P207 for those in the retail and service sector employing not more than 10 workers.
In Zamboanga City, the RTWPB-9 issued Wage Order R IX-13 granting a P15 increase in the daily basic pay of minimum wage earners in the region and also integrating the P20 COLA with the basic pay granted to workers under Wage Order No. 12.
Brion said the board also granted the wage hike motu proprio to help minimum wage earners cope with the increases in the cost of living without hampering the growth of business and industry in the region.
For workers in the non-agricultural sector in Region 9, the new minimum wage rate will be P215 a day from the previous P200. On the other hand, the new minimum daily wage rate for agricultural workers in plantations will be P190 and P170 for those in non-plantation sites. Workers in retail service and firms employing not more than 30 workers will get P195 daily minimum wage while those in cottage and handicraft will receive P155 daily pay.
habagatcentral1 July 18th, 2006, 10:40 AM Last post ko na to for this session...
Does anybody have an idea for Museo De Davao? What will happen to the Davao museum in Lanang?
Honestly, tago ang lugar ng Davao Museum sa Lanang. Muntik na akong maligaw. I was shocked kasi medyo may kamahalan ang museum. Dapat ilagay ang Museo sa isang lugar na accessible sa publiko.
habagatcentral1 July 18th, 2006, 10:41 AM Wow! May plano na pala sa Ulas for flyover? Will it be like Buhangin or murag Agdao? At least medyo madadivert na ang paspas na bus and have a deep breath when crossing Ulas, hehehe!
