^^ bilang na araw niyang Robinson's Bank kaya nga binibilisan nila ang Robinson's Cybergate ;)

Nope! That commercial building will be demolished to give way to the entrance (ramp) of the hotel. :)

wow thanks, po. hehe...
ok diay kay ramp...pero dili nako ma-imagine unsang itsura sa ramp...parang marco polo ba na elevated ang entrance? hehe...

Mukha nga. Kasi if you count 7 downwards, number 1 will end on the second floor, not the ground floor.

But what does this mean?

Tanawa pa gud ang numbering sa left side sa building. If mag ihap ka seven panaog, muundang ang one sa second floor, dili sa ground floor. Apparently, ang mezzanine ang ilang gi-assignan ug floor number. :dunno:

i guess elevated pa rin ang ramp not so visible sa perspective, the ground floor will give you an idea the height of the ground floor to the street level sa actual bldg. that means parang may basement pa before the ground floor imo.

well, just another insignificant loser on the loose...:ohno:

a stench of envy and bitterness..

Its just natural for Davao to be the subject of envy by many.

Davao has the cosmopolitan ambience that smaller cities can only dream of, The urban /planning ( where urban sprawl and nature is in harmony and there is still so much potential and room for growth) that other cities wish they have earlier planned for

An Island

A costal paradise located at the heart of Davao Gulf. A haven to those seeking solace in an unspoiled and natural ambience and to those who are in quest for great adventure and extreme challenges with nature. It's white and prestine beaches and diverse natural attractions combined with the warmth and hospitality ot its people spell out its potential to be a world class eco-tourism destination in this part of Southern Mindanao.

A Garden

Aside from its awesome coral garden, one may not see a floral garden in the island as yet. But as a new City, the Island is definitely a garden of ooportunities. Just a stone throw away from Davao City - a large economic base, and an international gateway, Samal is the best place for would-be investors. it boasts of a superior quality island beach area, large areas of land suitable for development, and a highly receptive local government and community.

A City

The Island Garden City of Samal is one of the thirteen newest cities of the country. Its unique birth was made out of the merger of the three former municipalities of the island namely, Babak, Samal, Kaputian. The official name is Island Garden City of Samal (IGaCoS). The name speaks for itself and for what place is destined to become - an island cluster, emerging to become the international center of amenities and tourism hub of Southern Philippines. It is proposed to become the convention center and financial district for the BIMP-EAGA (Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines - East Asean Growth Area) as laid out in the Davao Integrated Development Program (DIDP).

Filinvest Land to put up
business hotel in Davao

By Manuel T. Cayon
Reporter

DAVAO CITY—Filinvest Land will construct a businessman’s hotel here this year.

Tristan Las Marias, Filinvest vice president for the Visayas and Mindanao, said the hotel will rise in uptown Buhangin and will cater mainly to business travelers.

Project details have yet to be finalized but he said the hotel will not cater to conventions and other functions. “This is not like the common hotels that we have. We won’t hold conventions or similar functions.” He said construction will likely proceed in the third quarter of the year.

Filinvest held its groundbreaking ceremony Friday to start the construction of two condominium buildings in a 2.3-hectare property on Ecowest Drive in Ecoland Subdivision in Matina, south of downtown.

The two buildings form part of the seven five-story condominium project scheduled over three years. Called One Oasis Davao, the project will comprise four condominium and three condotel buildings. The Filinvest executive added that all 120 units in the first building have been already sold.

Another Filinvest project in the area is the upscale Kembali Coast, a subdivision with a long beach front in Kaputian District in the Island Garden City of Samal.

Most old Asian cities and capitals are moving toward condominium living as urban dwellers try to save due to the continued oil-price hikes.

“People are tending towards the city centers, where shopping malls, churches, schools and places of work are accessible from their houses or housing units,” said Andrew T. Gotianun Jr., vice president at Filinvest Land.

Gotianun told BusinessMirror here during the groundbreaking rites of the company’s two condominium buildings here Friday, that “the tendency now is to shift to condo living, because of the high price of oil and its domino effect, many are afraid to travel too far from their residences.”

“This is becoming part of city living, especially in old cities and capitals in Asia,” he said. “People want to cut travel time and cost. The price of oil is becoming very high, and people just want to be in the most accessible location as possible,” he said.

He said the capitals like Seoul and Bangkok have built already constructed several condominium units, mostly high-rises “and very affordable.” He added that “last year alone, my friend in Thailand constructed 250 units in one year.”

The rich in some Asian capitals may still prefer living inside gated communities and other prime estates in the countryside or rural areas, but “many others are moving into the city centers.”

The global slowdown, prompted by problems in the US subprime housing loans, has so far created less impact in the Philippines, at least in the real-estate sector, Gotianun noted. “There’s been little effect. It’s really different from our problem in our construction and real-estate sector in the 1990s and it would not likely to return with this slowdown,” he said.

“I think, our Filipino clients based in the US, or those that rely mostly on the dollar and even those in the Middle East as the currencies are dollar-based would be affected by the slowdown.

He said clients from euro-based countries have not been affected and Gotianun said Filinvest has continued to receive a lot of inquiries on their real- estate projects from these buyers.

Gotianun said that the company’s outlook on the Philippine economy remained bullish and ascribed this to the “more stable banking system with low interest regime, a supportive and well-managed government and a clientele base composed mostly of overseas Filipino workers and Filipino expatriates.

“The borrowing rates have been consistently low and not restrictive, and I think our banks and government doing quite a good job, considering the political pressures that they have encountered,” he said. He accredited Vice President Noli de Castro for the “quick action on the plaints of the real-estate developers. There have been so many policies that were changed.”

He added that the company’s confidence in the economy can be seen from the continued construction of subdivisions and condominiums across the country. He said that a quarter of the company’s exposure is in Mindanao.

“My family is from Mindanao, and we know quite a lot about this island,” he said, citing the family investments in banking and other real-estate ventures.

I guess dili mag pataka ang UAP President kung dili tinuod and it's more reliable from an Architect against a Politician when it comes to bldgs.

to be fair, I wouldnt consider anything as official unless galing sa tao na connected mismo sa company or may kinalaman mismo sa project

example

lets say NCCC will build a hypermart sa may grand regal

if PengHok will say "NCCC plans to build a hypermart sa may Grand Regal and construction will commence by 2009"

motoo ko (but open ko of course sa possibility na dili madayon,i ts just that at the time na gisulti nya, tinood to sya)

if the Architect of the proposed hypermart will say

"NCCC Plans to build a hypermart sa may Grand Regal and target date ng pag start ng construction is 2009"

motoo ko (but open ko of course sa possibility na dili madayon,i ts just that at the time na gisulti nya, tinood to sya)

If say Councilor Lavina (with his track record ng pagsabi ng projects) or say an architect friend ng architect ng hypermart will say
"I heard that NCCC Plans to build a hypermart sa may Grand Regal and target date ng pag start ng construction is 2009"

then motoo ko, but I wont consider it otticial since wala naman sya kinalaman sa pag implement ng project.

Good evening mga bro!

we recently spent one whole day in Samal Island and another one in Davao City before heading to Bukidnon and CdO. we enjoyed our stay and had a lot of fun :D

due to our very limited time, we didn't get the chance to visit some of the city attractions. we roamed around the city's streets instead to get to feel the real Davao City. here are the places we were able to go to in one day:

From Samal Island to Davao Boat Club in Lanang
Passed by The Venue and Abreeza site
Gaisano Mall of Davao - Lunch
Quirino Avenue - where we stayed
Downtown / Centro - tasting Durian the first time
San Pedro Church, City Hall grounds/plaza
People's Park - nag picture2x. very nice public park :okay:
Banok's - dinner, good food, affordable and UNLIRICE pa! i think all restos there are naka unlimited hehe
Matina Town Square - Blugre Coffee (mejo relax and peaceful ang lugar)
NCCC, SM City, Ecoland, etc. - just passed by
F. Torres Street - Bakbak, etc. (Inuman!) hehe
Davao Convention Center - Christmas Bazaar but I wonder why most goods are unreasonably overpriced
Kasagingan - coffee break pero too bad they closed way too early (past 10pm) :( but i enjoyed the Bananapuccino
Ecoland Bus Terminal (the next day) - leaving for Bukidnon :D

Davao City is nice, no doubt the premier city in Mindanao. we had a great time. People are very friendly and are helpful in giving us directions. They always ask where we're from and after they learned we're from Cebu, they always say "Gamay ra ang Cebu" and then they would smile and provide mga tips sa travel. but it's really funny to think nga 4 different people have the same response. cool! hehe

I was surprised the city is very "Catholic" just like Cebu, contrary to what I used to believe nga dominantly Muslim. people are cool, relax ang ambience and very peaceful. :okay: i also learned that the major language for male is bisaya and for female is tagalog. hehehe. but that's my honest observation ;) we're looking forward to visit Davao next year, this time camping sa Mt. Apo! :okay:

thank you fellaz for all those who answered my queries before. sure was a big help! pictures to follow soon :D

I hope the government will exert its muscle to pump-out/drain water during rains in these areas, since andito ang GMall, VPlaza, Proposed Ayala, Soon to Open Robinsons and other Offices. Davao to focus on farm, IT and Tourism in 2009
BusinessWorld (http://www.bworldonline.com/BW120308/content.php?id=058)

DAVAO CITY — The city’s business chamber plans to promote investments in agriculture, tourism, as well as information and technology in 2009.

Simeon P. Marfori II, president of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, said his group has drafted programs to develop further these sectors through assistance from the Philippines-Australia Human Resources Development Facility.

Milalin S. Javellana, facility director, said the Australian government-funded program has helped the chamber in the last five years. Ms. Javellana said the facility has set aside A$86,000 for the program.

On Wednesday last week, the chamber presented its 2009 programs to Vice-Mayor Sara Z. Duterte.

Mr. Marfori said his group is helping to form the city’s Agricultural Development Board. He said the city already has an Information and Communications Technology Association, as well as the Davao City Tourism Council and the Davao Tourism Association to lead these thrusts. — CQF

Another Davao film cops Cinemaone best picture plum

Davao City (3 December) -- Dabawenyo director Sherad Sanchez digital film Imburnal copped the Best picture award during the recent CinemaOne Originals Film Festival awards night held last Nov. 29 at the Dolphy Theatre inside the ABS-CBN Broadcast Center in Quezon City.

Shot in Davao City, Imburnal is a tale of two young boys living in San Antonio and their initiation to manhood while living an impoverished life in the City. The Film took home the cash prize of P200,000 for winning the Best Picture category.
Sherad, also won the Best Screenplay award while local Dabawenyo filmmakers Mark Limbaga, Jose Bagane Fiola, Joel Geolamen and award-winning filmmaker John Torres took home the best Cinematography award for their work in Imburnal. The film did not boast of major star power utilizing instead locals living in the shooting area as actors in the film.

"Power talaga tong film na ito." (this film is powerful) Limbaga, said after hearing the news of Imburnal's win. "This is not like any other film you often see," he added in vernacular.

It was not the film's first accolade Imburnal also won the Lino Brocka Digital Lokal Grand Prize during the recent Cinemanila Film Festival held last October with no less than President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo handing over the film award to Sherad during the awarding ceremonies in Malacañang Palace.

It was a repeat of Sherad's victory in this festival. In 2006 his Arakan Valley-Marahan shot film Huling Balyan ng Buhi bagged Best picture in the CinemaOne Originals in that year. It also earned him accolades from various film festivals in Germany, France and India.

Now on its fourth year, CinemaOne Originals Digital Film Festival is an annual project of ABS-CBN's CinemaOne Channel. It is aimed in producing quality digital films coming from a new breed of Filipino filmmakers. (PIA) [top]

The Condo Craze
Bob

October 21, 2008 by Bob

One advantage for foreigners is that under Philippine law, even though you cannot legally own property, you can own a condo! Condominium developers can sell up to 40% of the units to foreigners and the unit can be held in the name of the foreigner. For unmarried foreigners, this is a real advantage, and one reason why I am happy to see condos come into the Davao market!

Live in the Philippines (http://http://www.liveinthephilippines.com/content/2008/10/the-condo-craze/)

parang tinamaan yata ako ah, im single and have no plans of marrying a filipino (at least not for now) seriously, does owning a condo unit in the philippines entitle me to a permanent resident visa? :dunno: i hope somebody can answer this....

^^
Same sex unions are not recognized in our jurisdiction. If a same sex couple jointly purchase property in the Philippines (assuming that they are qualified to purchase under Philippine laws), their property relations will only be governed by the Civil Code provisions on Co-ownership and not by the Family Code provisions on Absolute Community of Property. :)

East Asian Real Estate investors eye Davao as retirement haven
Aug 31st, 2008

Japanese and Korean investors are considering sites in Davao City for retirement villages of their foreign nationals.

Teolulo Pasawa, Department of Trade and Industry city director for Davao City in an interview said that these investors are just validating the areas even as he said that they already had registered their businesses at the Securities and Exchange Corporation (SEC).

He said the Japanese investor still has to conduct ocular on the recommended sites where the basic requirement is accessibility to medical facilities.

The sites he said are areas with building for dormitory type or a raw site ideal for retirement villages.

The retirement village is an expansion of their existing business in Davao City of the Menogaia Corporation, a business process outsourcing business that caters to clients in Japan for designs and architecture and the English as Second Language where Davao Based instructors teach English on line to Japanese nationals.

Pasawa said they already have 100 workers for both the designs and architecture and the on-line language.

“Knowing the increasing cost of retirement facilities in Japan the investor had considered this investment as a big potential in Davao City,” he said.

Meanwhile the Korean investor is looking at developing an area in Buhangin for a mix-use of hotel, retirement part and for residential areas.

He said the Good Morning Company has a 10-hectare area located in between Robinsons and Panorama Subdivision.

The company he said already will start construction within the year although he did not give details about the project.

He said the two investors also did not specify whether they already made arrangements with the Philippine Retirement Authority but he stressed that it would be an advantage if these proposed retirement villages be enrolled at the PRA so they gets the promotion to attract more clients.

1. No, you cannot derive any residence visa out of that marriage because it is not recognized as valid under Philippine laws.

2. You have exclusive rights over the property registered under your name. Your partner cannot claim entitlement based on your marriage for the same reason above, unless he can show proof that he actually contributed to its purchase. In the latter case, your property relations will be governed by the Civil Code and not the Family Code.

Talicud Island and Samal

http://img258.imageshack.us/img258/9651/dsc0205gb6.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Birds having a 'feeding frenzy' off Samal

A trip to Davao is also a trip to the Island Garden City of Samal for me. The neighboring island province makes a Davao trip just complete and more worthwhile since I am a beach lover. When people think of Davao, people think of Pearl Farm, when it is actually in Samal. I have been to Paradise Island Resort twice, being the most accessible beach from Davao City. It's so near, you could have lunch there and go back afterwards.

This time, we had the time to explore more of Samal. We didn't make any plans, so after staying at Paradise, we went back to the city to catch a ferry to Talicud Island off Samal as our ultimate destination. It was described as a rustic island paradise, with white sandy beaches and fantastic coral life.

We took a ferry to Talicud Island from Sta. Ana Port in Davao City. The boat left at 12 noon, and arrived in Talicud an hour and a half later. We were supposed to stay at Isla Reta so we took a stupid 2 minute boat ride from the port to Isla Reta, which turned out to be just beside the port. In any case, we had our boatman wait for us as we checked out the place. Isla Reta had a very nich beach and vibe, with trees lined along its shore, giving some inviting shade. However, the place lacked good accommodations, and we weren't prepared to rough it out. No food. No beddings or towels. So we had to look for another resort.

We then went to Kaputian, the center of Samal. From there, we asked around for some resorts, but there wasn't anything that was accommodating enough. The Kaputian Beach Resort, which was their public beach was full, and we were shown a bodega like room which in no way we would sleep. It was nice to see that the public beach was very well maintained. The picture below shows the white sands of Kaputian.

http://img377.imageshack.us/img377/131/dsc0055il3.jpg (http://imageshack.us)
Samal Island overlooking Ligid Island

Fortunately, someone overheard us looking for a resort. The guy approached us and gave us a calling card of a new nearby resort, Hof Gorei, just beside the famed Pearl Farm. I called and booked a huge room for the six of us. We initially planned to explore Talicud Island, since we had limited time. Our flight was tomorrow night, and I was worried we wouldn't be able see anything. But it was already late in the afternoon, so we decided to just head straight to the resort and explore tomorrow morning.

Hof Gorei was a blessing after feeling hopeless in finding a place to stay. We were the only ones in the resort, and it was huge and beautiful. The resort was nestled on a slope which gave the colorful cottages fabulous views of the Davao Gulf. There was a restaurant, a bar and a refreshing swimming pool.

There was even a condominium type building on the very top that had a patio that made me feel I was in the Mediterranean because of its design. The fabulous Madam Jeanne Kroelle was our most gracious host and had pampered us with royalty service (imagine clapping and an attendant comes right up to you).

The barkada room could sleep 8 people, which was perfect for us. It cost us P4,000 for a night. Other rooms cost P3,500 but could only sleep a maximum of three. There was also the Leaning Hut which was perched on a hill. The place looked high end, just right for a night of relaxation after an exhausting afternoon. The food was expensive though, and not spectacular, but tolerable. There was a beach front but not really meant for swimming.

We went up Madame Jeanne's house which was under construction at that time to see the view. It was 200 steps I think up, giving us a great vantage point. You could see Pearl Farm from a distance. It was just beside Hof Gorei that you could walk the beach going there.

wrecked jetty in Talicud Island

We explored Talicud Island the next day, heading straight to the popular Babusanta Beach. Blogs described it having crystal clear waters perfect for snorkeling. So we made sure we brought our snorkeling gear along. We arrived at Babusanta at around 10AM. The ruins of a jetty was its most prominent landmark, which gave it a sense of character.

The beach was white though the sand was not powder fine. There were a lot of natural debris on the shore and three more boats full of tourists were present. It wasn't really the rustic paradise I had imagined, since there were makeshift houses on the other beach. There were a number of fishing boats as well. However, we moved to one end of the beach and found a spot that made us feel castaway.

We had a hearty lunch of grilled fish that we bought from the fishermen. We left around 2PM to snorkel in the reefs nearby. The water was clear indeed, but was very very disappointed when a stream of trash made its way to the reefs. Again, another wake up call to all locals and tourists. I think the trash even came from Davao City. They formed a line going with the current. The reef was fantastic though, and there was a steep cliff/wall of coral that seemed to plunge into infinity. We went back to Hof Gorei hurriedly to catch the last ferry from Kaputian back to Davao City.

All in all, Talicud Island and Samal are worth the trip from Davao. Hof Gorei gave us a memorable resort experience and we wish to come back. The ferry ride back to Davao City was one of the best I had experienced. I went up the roof and marveled at the most golden sunset I have ever seen. It was priceless.

British solons praise mayor
Mindanao Daily Mirror
December 02, 2008

British Members of Parliament have praised Mayor Rodrigo Duterte for his “foresight and clear visions for the city.”

Duterte had hosted members of the All Party British Parliamentary Group to the Philippines to a dinner at The Marco Polo, Davao last Monday.

During the dinner, group members Mark Pritchard (Philippine group chair), Elliot Morley, and Graham Stuart engaged Duterte in conversation on various topics, including peace and order, politics, and even corruption.

Duterte told the group he is supporting President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo up to the end of her term in 2010, adding he does not support any extension of her term or that of other elected officials.

Asked by the parliamentarians if he has any intention of running for President in 2010, Duterte responded in the negative and said he is “not comfortable with the position.”

“I would like to see a President who is not a politician and one who is not inclined to be a dictator,” he said.

“I’m a hard politician. I’ve been mayor for 20 years, congressman for three years, and prosecutor for 10 years. I want to retire,” he added.

When the conversation touched on the extra-judicial killings in Davao City, Duterte flatly denied being involved in any of them.

Duterte also did not hide his dislike of US policy, which he said stemmed from the Michael Meiring incident in 2004 in which the American, who had been injured in an explosion in a downtown hotel, was taken from his hospital room by US agents and flown to the US without coordination with the local government.

“My quarrel with the Americans has nothing to do with its people but it’s with the US government,” Duterte said.

After the dinner, Pritchard commended the mayor’s foresight and clear visions for the city.

“He is somebody with ability, intellect, and a strong sense of what is right and wrong,” he said.

The All Party Parliamentary Group to the Philippines is a voluntary association of members of both the Houses of Lords and Commons who are interested in promoting Philippine-British relations.

Also present during the dinner were Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Mindanao assistant secretary Kadatuan Usop, International Relations committee chair Rachel Zozobrado, and deputy chief of mission Philippine Embassy and London Rey Catapang. Maya M. Padillo

Council OKs P3.2 billion budget on second reading
Mindanao Daily Mirror
December 03, 2008

The City Council yesterday approved on second reading the city’s 2009 annual budget amounting to P3.2 billion.

The proposed budget is 7.6 percent higher than last year’s P2.927 billion budget.

Of the P3,200,030,981 budget, P2.7 billion or 55.27 percent was allocated for general fund proper. The peace and order program makes up 30 percent or P450 million.

The economic enterprise allocation and the annual development plan were pegged at P73.7 million and P380.8 million, respectively.

Before the budget was approved, the Committee on Finance headed by councilor Myrna Dalodo-Ortiz proposed that it be lowered to P3,193,445,781, slashing P6.585 million from the general fund.

The proposed deduction was for the City Treasurers Office internet program (P380,000), for the additional 182 social workers that would be assigned to the barangays (P6.075 million), and for the canal and drainage program (P129,600).

City administrator Wendel Avisado, however, was able to convince the Council of the need to retain the original proposed budget.

The budget will go through a third reading for final approval. Diana Lhyd Suelto

Duterte: Davao City is not part of Davao del Sur
Mindanao Daily Mirror
December 03, 2008

Mayor Rodrigo wants government agencies to correct their records and remove Davao City from Davao del Sur’s jurisdiction.

Duterte said he noticed the error when he browsed through some documents from the Commission on Elections (Comelec) recently.

In the item “postal addresses,” Davao City was shown to be part of the province of Davao del Sur.

“Davao City is Davao City and is not part of Davao del Sur,” Duterte said.

“It is time to correct this,” he added.

Early this year, councilor Peter Laviña authored a resolution in the City Council asking President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to issue a directive to all concerned government agencies to separate Davao City from Davao del Sur.

Laviña said the Davao City’s statistics are still being lumped with Davao Del Sur even though Davao City, which became a chartered city in 1937, is older than Davao del Sur, which itself was carved out of the undivided Davao province in 1967.

He said the practice of combining the statistics of Davao City with Davao Del Sur is creating confusion.

Laviña added that the postal code of Davao City, 8000, is still under Davao del Sur even if Davao City is not a component of it. Davao del Sur’s component city is Digos City. Editha Z. Caduaya

The southern Philippines have been off the dive map for a few years due to unrest around the large island of Mindanao, but stability in the region has seen Davao open back up for intrepid foreign travelers. It's easy to get there, a quick flight from Manila with Cebu Pacific, and the diving is equally easy to access too - despite Davao being a huge port city, within 20 minutes of heading out from the marina, you're in the middle of the huge Davao Gulf, with the pristine Samal Island fringed with palm trees and beaches dead ahead.

Editha Z. Caduaya

^^this is a very good news kay sige lang mamisconcept nga ang digos and other parts of davao del sur is davao city...nya gubot ra ba diha nga dapit so apil jud dayon sa kahig ang davao city...dapat lang jud...:)

Villa de Mercedes is definitely the best high-end subdivision in Davao City that gives you a magnificent view of the entire Davao City, Samal Island, the blue waters of Davao Gulf, and of course the majestic Mount Apo. At Villa de Mercedes, you have the choice to own a lot-only property or a house and lot package.

At Villa de Mercedes, the beauty of nature more than just sits as a distant view from your home. It is nature at your very doorstep and the world unfolding before your eyes. The natural terrain of slopes amidst grassy meadows and local flora and fauna, greet you each morning.

The majesty of Mt. Apo bidding you good day as you leave home in the morning, is rivaled only by the calming welcome of Davao Gulf as you drive home at the end of the day.

Combining the best that life has to offer, Villa de Mercedes is situated within Toril at 535 feet above sea level, yet only 30 minutes away from the city. It is a breathtaking residential development nestled atop the hills of Catigan.

Chinatown now has its own mall
The bustling business area within the city's 43-hectare Chinatown will become more vibrant with the opening on December 4 of the Chinatown 168 Mall.

http://i196.photobucket.com/albums/aa122/wabbygabby/DSC02554.jpg

A first of it's kind in Davao City, Chinatown 168 Mall is a landmark in one of the city's major centers of commerce and trade. The area is now a growing tourist destination.
An outstanding feature of the mall is the exclusive display and sale of Chinese products by tenants who are Filipino-Chinese traders mostly based in Manila.
At the ground floor, more then 50 stalls offer various wares and products including RTWs, personal accessories, electronic goods, toys, applances, cell phones and home decors.
The mall management has preferred to offer the stalls to wholeslaers to ensure high qulaity and low price. Being wholesalers they can sell products at a wholesale price which is lower than retail.
At the second floor of the mall are the food court and a grocery store which offer Chinese goods and merchandises.
The enitre 3,500 square meter two-storey mall has a centralized air condition system. It is also equipped with well maintained comfort room.
Chinatown 168 Mall also provides a spacious parking area at the back of the mall along Alvarez St. while the space right before it's main door, along Magsaysay Ave., can alos accomodate cars.

The rich cultural and historical heritage of Davao comes from its various indigenous tribes. Among the predominant groups are the Bagobo, Mandaya, Mansaka, Manobo, Ata and B’laan tribes.

Davao is said to be a result of the phonetic blending of words “ davoh” (Obo group), “duhwow” (Clatta group) and “dabu” (Tagabawa group) from three Bagobo subgroups, meaning “beyond the higher grounds” or “over the hills yonder”, a reference to Davao River, the site of trading settlement in the past.

Led by Alvaro de Saavedra, the colonizing Spaniards arrived in the region in 1528. After the Spanish troops revolted and slayed Moro leader Datu Bago in 1847 – a local hero who fought the colonizers, Don Jose Oyanguren became the first governor of the province and renamed the place Guipuzcoa.

Even before World War II, Davaoeños had maintained amicable relations with the Japanese. In 1900, the Japanese established extensive plantations of abaca around the gulf area and was engaged in logging, fishing and trading. The increase of Japanese in the area earned Davao the nickname “Japan kuo” or “little Japan.”

Davao finally became a city in October 16,1936 when President Manuel Quezon signed Commonwealth Act No. 51, also known as the Charter of the City of Davao.

2 more terminals to be built in 2009
Increase in DCOTT earnings reported
by Janis Louis H. Espana

The urgent request of Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte for the Davao City Council to cause the establishment of two more overland transport terminals is on track. The terminals, one for south-bound passenger vehicles and another for the north-bound vehicles, in addition to the lone Davao City Overland Transport Terminal(DCOTT)) at Ecoland, might be realized sometime next year.
This was learned from Dr. Pliar Braga chairperson of the counicil comittee ion energy, transportation and communication, the body tasked to respond to the request of Mayor Duterte.
Earlier Duterte said DCOTT at ecoland built close to 30 years ago, can no longer handle the number of passenger vehicles coming in and out of the city all day long.
Councilor Braga told Edge Davao that south and north-bound are included in the City Traffic Code currently tackled by her committee. She said that tha proposed traffic code is 50% done with her comittee expected to report it out during the first quarter next year.

Davao's Uyanguren Is Newest Location Of Popular 168 Mall

http://img208.imageshack.us/img208/9079/img0839rz2.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

Davao's very own Chinatown aka Uyanguren is the newest location of one of the 168 malls, famous for selling very cheap goods straight from China.

The mall, which does not really look like your traditional mall but merely a place where stalls are located, is already operational but as of last week only a few stalls have opened to the public.

City councilor Susabel Reta has pushed for the naming of this district as Chinatown considering that most of the stores here are owned by the Chinese. Lately though, the street has been invaded by Korean businessmen so the name might be a misnomer.

The opening of the mall is very timely for Christmas shopping but then again watch out for China-made food and other items that might be dangerous to your health.

HOT SPOTS

DAVAO CITY
By Sandra Young
Globe Masigasig 2008

Abundant natural resources and a business-friendly environment make this sprawling metropolis an ideal place to set up shop.

Davao City, located in southeastern Mindanao, has fertile soil, potable water, and stays typhoon-free all year round. These natural advantages, along with modern infrastructures and world-class facilities, make Davao Mindanao's center of commerce, trade, and services. Each of the Philippines' Top 200 Companies has branches or offices in Davao City. Moreover, there are so many expatriates and migrants in the city that the governments of Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, and the United States have opened consular offices there as well.

FAVORABLE FRUITS
Entrepreneurs are encouraged to take advantage of Davao's ample, arable lands and put up a fruit business, either as farmers, distributors, or exporters. The chief money-making fruits are bananas and durian.

Davao is the reason the Philippines has been declared the second largest exporter of Cavendish bananas in the world. Last 2006, Cavendish bananas from Davao comprised 66 percent of the country's total agricultural exports. But there is room for more players; according to the Department of Agriculture, the demand for fresh bananas abroad is growing by 13.8 percent every year and increasing by 10 percent in terms of value. Major export destinations comprise over 31 countries including the European Union, United States, Japan, Russia, China, and Canada.

Banana by-products such as banana chips and banana puree are also in demand overseas. The Philippines currently exports US $36 million worth of banana chips. Banana chips have a market in over 50 countries worldwide.

OTHER AGRICULTURAL BUSINESSES
Another fruit that has high local and overseas demand is the durian. Export-wise, the Philippines produces 27,000 tons of durian a year.

Meanwhile, entrepreneurs with a horticultural background will be pleased to know that another of Davao's growing industries is the production and export of cut flowers. Davao produces one million dozen cut flowers annually. Major markets for cut flowers are South Korea, Brunei, Japan, Hong Kong, and Italy.

PRIORITY INVESTMENT AREAS
The government is also keen on attracting investors in the following:

PROPERTY DEVELOPMENT
With the influx of Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) companies in Davao, a trend that is expected to grow 30 percent more in the next two years, there is a high demand for IT Parks and BPO Centers.

TOURISM-RELATED BUSINESSES
Local hotels enjoy a 60 percent occupancy all year round but these are not enough to accommodate the vacationers that troop to Davao every year. Entrepreneurs may find it profitable to invest in high-end hotels and resorts, as well as added attraction facilities like theme parks and special animal parks.

LIGHT MANUFACTURING
Entrepreneurs who have technical know-how may be interested in putting up light manufacturing factories in Davao. Light industry products are produced for end users rather than as intermediates for use by other industries; examples include the manufacture of clothes, shoes, furniture, and consumer electronics.
Local fiscal incentives are available to those interested in starting up any of the businesses listed above.

DID YOU KNOW:

Davao City occupies a land area of 2,444 square kilometers making it the country's largest city.

The Francisco Bangoy International Airport (Davao International Airport) is the busiest airport in Mindanao.

The city government maintains a 24-hour emergency response system patterned after the 911 systems in Canada and the United States. People can dial the 911 number to report emergencies.
