Unemployment rate in Davao drops by 3.8%
THE Department of Labor and Employment (Dole) 11 has reported that the unemployment rate in Davao Region has dropped by 3.8 percent -- from 11 percent last year to only 7.2 percent this year.
Dole 11 Regional Director Ma. Gloria Tango said Wednesday this could be attributed to the series of jobs fair they have been conducting and livelihood assistance they have provided to various groups.
Based on the April rounds of the labor force survey (LFS) released by the National Statistics Office (NSO), Tango said, the standards of the International Labor Organization (ILO) has already been adopted.
In the said LFS, a total labor force of 1,751,000 was noted.
As per ILO standards, Tango said, the following are considered as unemployed: without work during the reference period; currently available for work; and seeking for work.
"With this, 'yong mga estudyante hindi na included sa labor force. Noon kasi basta 15 years old hanggang 65 years old, kahit estudyante pa, kasali sa survey as unemployed sector. Right now, iba na ang concept. If you are not looking for a job, you are no longer considered as unemployed," she said.
Tango said the previous term of reference adopted by the country was sort of erratic.
"Dati, alarming ang statistics kasi we were talking about a different term of reference. Kapag ikinumpara mo ang statistics ng Pilipinas sa ibang bansa, mataas ang sa atin kasi nga iba ang ginamit na term of reference. That's why, the NSCB (National Statistical Coordination Board) issued a resolution for us to adopt the ILO standards. Baka kasi isipin ng mga tao na dinoktor namin ang figure," she said.
Data released by Dole 11 showed April's unemployment rate is lower than January's level of 8.6 percent.
"This is a good sign that the region is moving up. Kahit pa sabihin ng iba na kaya mababa tayo ngayon ay dahil sa bagong term of reference still achievement pa rin sya kasi mas mababa pa rin tayo sa national level which is at 8.3 percent," she said. (JMM)

Oranda: Songs of the mountains
TALAINGOD, Davao Del Norte -- The oranda is one of the many facets that paints the Ata-Manobos' intriguing culture. Through their haunting chants, they illustrate their peoples' plight and their long history of struggle and poverty.
For years, the lumads of Sitio Barubo have drifted from one mountain to another building makeshift houses and planting small patches of corn and rootcrops along the way without any real sense of where the future would lead them. Their songs speak of long years of isolation, their earlier peaceful existence, the massive logging of the forests, their fight for their ancestral domain and their obvious contempt for the government that has "abandoned" them.
The Kalahi Area Coordinating Team will never forget the hard sentiments that met them when they first entered the tribal cluster of Paiton. According to the disappointed Lumads, their long years of struggle without any help has hardened their hearts against the government.
"Kinsa man mo ug ngano man mo nianhi diri? (Who are you and why did you come to our place)? the scornful tone of Datu Ipos Budyos' words reflected the Lumads' long felt disdain against the government. Referring to themselves as the people "who can't see and hear", Datu Ipos questioned the Kalahi team's motives conveying how fed up they already were with the many agencies and organizations' unfulfilled promises.
Nevertheless, Kalahi-Cidss was a ray of light to the otherwise bleak condition of the Ata-Manobos and it was clear to them they must have to go through a very rigorous process.
Building partnerships and capacities
The LGU's commitment was clear from the very beginning. The most difficult test was securing the trust and sustaining the participation of the already disillusioned Lumads. But the Kalahi team pushed through despite the open cynicism, even acting as mediators between tribal leaders to unite their communities and form Kalahi's 15 tribal clusters.
Kalahi activities were always made more interesting by the Lumads' love for songs and dances. "We learned it is through oranda that they could freely express their sentiments thus the more we encourage them," relates Emmalyn Oliveros, community facilitator (CF).
The program's process was spelled out in its simplest possible form through interpreters and visual tools. Volunteer and Project Management Committee (PMC) chair Carlos Mendoza describes his unforgettable learnings with Kalahi.
"Niagi mi sa daghan kaayo nga seminars para sa among gituboy nga housing project. Apan nagpadayon gihapon mi kay kami man ang nagpili ani nga proyekto (We went through numerous seminars for our proposed housing project but we pulled through because we chose this project)," he said.
Realizing the obvious investment of Kalahi, it finally dawned on the people Kalahi is for real thus, securing their confidence and commitment. Assistant Regional Director and Kalahi Project Manager Minda B. Brigoli marvels how the team's constant presence and regular meetings with the people steadily earned their trust and how they now amusingly address all male Kalahi workers as "engineels".
The remake of a village
With the 1,000-peso community contribution in their pockets, volunteers excitedly walked the streets of Tagum City for the first time in their lives and set foot on Land Bank and opened their own account. "The bank initially allowed them to use thumb marks but they later learned to sign their initials," recounts former Area coordinator (AC) Lina V. Cañedo.
With everything in place, the Lumads' enthusiasm grew infectious. They ignored the heat and sheer weight of GI sheets, amakan slats, nails and other materials on their backs as they trekked the 10 kilometers to the project site. Working diligently alongside skilled laborers, they could see their dream becoming real right before their very eyes.
Kalahi-Cidss planned a more wholistic approach. The houses were designed with kitchen sinks, fences and individual indigenized toilets and pipes were laid from the water source to the community for easier access and one communal tribal house was designed for the community's social activities.
"We made inputs on health and sanitation, backyard gardening and maintenance of their homes because the project aims to go beyond mere building of houses. More importantly, it aspires to develop the social well-being of the Lumads," Cañedo said.
The new Paiton
The people's elation is almost tangible when one enters Paiton. Neat rows of amakan-walled houses, glaring GI roofs and the proud smiles of the Lumads welcomed its first visitors led by DSWD Secretary Corazon Juliano-Soliman.
The tribal social hall positioned atop a hill overlooks the transformation of the people. Their sense of ownership over the project has ended their nomadic life and allowed services to finally enter the community.
"More Lumads are encouraged to live and stay in their community because of the sense of security it offers. Kalahi strengthened their unity as a people because development, they learned, can only reach their community if they work as one," Kalahi Engineer Al Alferez said, "with the shelter problem out of the way, they can now give extra focus on their farms."
Kalahi has made Paiton a permanent community and its establishment has become a magnet for other development opportunities for the Ata-Manobos.
The carpentry skills they learned through Kalahi unlocked for them another alternative means of livelihood. Further, the five-kilometer road from Paiton proper to Sitio Barubo was finally opened allowing four-wheeled vehicles to enter the community.
The tribal housing project paved the way for tenurial security. The local government already provided certificate of house ownership and housing plates, affirming the lumads' permanent occupancy. It also conducted vaccinations, registrations and provided technical inputs on farming. Meanwhile, the Department of Agriculture committed to construct a bigger water system structure adapting the bayanihan system of Kalahi which has already become a way of life of the community.
The triumph of Sitio Barubo has made it one of the most visited Kalahi areas. Today, Lumads show off their dances and the once cynical Datu Ipos clad in his most colorful tribal outfit greets visitors with jubilant chants of how they prevailed through Kalahi and how their dedication transcended language barriers, culture differences, illiteracy and distance.
The rugged road of Tomoaong used to be an obstruction rather than a link, depriving the people crucial access to social and economic activities. Not a few have resigned themselves to a life of hardship but their gradual embrace of the Kalahi-Cidss approach shifted their history of struggle and transformed them from apathetic to progressive, highly participative villagers.

Brunei, Philippine Govts Renew Pact on Cheaper Port Tariffs
DAVAO CITY, July 29 Asia Pulse - The Philippines and Brunei governments have renewed the bilateral agreement on uniform port tariff (UPT) in a bid to spur cross-border trade movement within the Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, PhilippinesEast Asian Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA).
The Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) said the agreement, which provides for more incentives and lower port charges, will be extended until 2007 in response to requests of private shipping firms.
Under the agreement, accredited vessels served by the ports of Brunei and Philippines are entitled to special charges including US$0.040 per Gross Registered Tonnage (GRT) for port dues and US$0.020 per GRT for dockage fees.
The special rates are lower than the standard port dues of US$0.81 per GRT and dockage fees of US$0.039 per GRT charged for vessels engaged in foreign trade.
Seaports covered under the renewed UPT agreement are the ports of Davao, General Santos, Polloc, Zamboanga, Jolo, Puerto Princesa, Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Bongao, Nasipit and Ozamis in the Philippines; and the Muara and Kuala Belait ports in Brunei.
The UPT agreement has been extended three times since its implementation in September 1999.
Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) officials recommended a first two-year extension until 2003 when the agreement expired in September 2001. The extension was renewed in the succeeding years.
MEDCo Secretary Jesus Dureza said the move is seen to continually increase vessel traffic among the ports within the BIMP-EAGA region.
Dureza said Mindanao's cargo traffic during the first quarter this year significantly increased due to the bustling exchange of sea cargoes in the economic region.
Data from MEDCo showed that the volume of cargo passing through Mindanao's seaports grew by 5.7 percent during the first three months this year, with 4.7 million metric tons of cargo compared to last year's 4.4 million metric tons.
"The extension of the UPT agreement offers a huge opportunity for the private sector to sustain Mindanao's economic engagement in EAGA and further strengthen the robust trading relationships that have been there for a long time," Dureza said.

100 hidden caves boost eco-tourism in Davao del Norte
More than just holes, caves contain much treasure.
Rich in flora and fauna, caves can also hold water and minerals, or archaeologically significant fossils and artifacts.
But a careless touch can damage them. Sensitive to imbalances in the ecosystem, some caves in Davao del Norte are now endangered due to improper farming practices.
"Caves are a fragile part of our ecosystem," says Felix Abangin, chief of the Eco-tourism, Wildlife and Protected Areas Division (EWAPAD) of the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (PENRO).
Davao del Norte has more than a hundred of these caves, boosting the area eco-tourism potentials.
Officially, only 26 caves exist in Davao del Norte; two in New Corella; nine in Kapalong, and 15 in the Island Garden City of Samal. (PNA)

Davao City wins bid to host Asean Tourism Forum in 2007
Davao City (3 August) -- Davao City won the bid to host the Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) in 2007.
Davao Tourism Association president and vice chair of the ATF host committee Art Boncato in an interview said they are expecting Department of Tourism Undersecretary Oscar Palabyab to come to Davao City on Thursday (August 4) to update the industry players about the role Davao in the largest travel trade event.
He said Usec Palabyab who will meet the major players of the tourism forum is expected to discuss the preparations and guidelines for the coming event.
"It is a great honor for Davao to be the host and we will make sure that everything is properly handled and leave no stones unturned to make the ATF successful," he said.
However, Boncato said that with the developments in the Asean, the holding of the ATF could be moved earlier in 2006.
He said Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte already committed to support the ATF
As host, he said they will not only be dealing about Davao but the Philippines as a whole.
"Our benchmark is the Cebu hosting in the 90s which was handled well," he said.
According to Boncato, the Philippines is known in the Asean as good in hosting and they will equally do the same this time.
He said the AFT is a major event that will be participated in by ten ASEAN countries where buyers and sellers from over 55 countries meet.
"We are expecting 600 exhibitors where destinations all over the sub region will be showcased," he said.
He said this is our opportunity where our favored destinations will be featured in the travel expo.
Davao City he said is ready for the big event even as he said that they already had identified two possible venues for the exposition.
He said that as early even last year they had started planning and they expect over 3,000 participants to join.
Initially he said an ocular inspection was done with regards to venue, accommodations and transportation.
"About 1,000 rooms is required and we have enough rooms because the city has some 2,180 rooms available," he said.
"There are standards to be followed with regards to hotels, transportation and the venue. This is actually happening here because our service provider are already familiar with the international standards," he added.
Boncato said everybody is very excited about the ATF because it will not only give us a mileage but also provide our destinations access to international market.
He said it is about tine that Davao is also recognize considering that it is slowly being considered as a favored destination in Asia

Kadayawan sa Dabaw
August 2005 “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain unparalleled. Be part of the experience.
Madayaw!
Greetings! A warm and friendly greeting derived from the Dabawenyo word “dayaw” that means good, valuable, superior or beautiful. Such is “Kadayawan”, a celebration of life, a thanksgiving for the gifts of nature, the wealth of culture, the bounties of harvest and serenity of living.
Although already a customary practice of the indigenous people of Davao the thanksgiving festival was institutionalized in 1986 to unite the Dabawenyos after the turbulent Martial Law years. It was then called “Apo Duwaling”, a contraction of the famous icons of the city – namely Mt. Apo, Durian and Waling-waling. Two years later, it was renamed “Kadayawan sa Dabaw” to better reflect the merry spirit and indigenous theme of the celebration.
Today, Kadayawan has metamorphosed into a festival of festivals, the mother of may other festivals in the region as it honors Davao’s artistic, cultural and historical heritage, its past personified by the ancestral “lumads”, its people as they celebrate on the streets, and its floral industry as they parade in full regalia in thanksgiving for the blessings bestowed on the city.
“Kadayawan sa Dabaw” is an enriching experience with a difference as its explores the past, present and future of the Davaoeños, the Mindanaoans, the Filipinos. Its sights and sounds remain unparalleled. Be part of the experience.

City to endorse SME display center at DIA
THE City Government of Davao vowed to endorse the setting up of a Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) Display Center at the Davao International Airport.
This proposal was made by the Davao Smed Council and was passed during the recently held 5th Davao City Business Conference (DCBC).
Through the establishment of a display center at the Davao International Airport, the resolution said, the city would have a bigger showroom to promote its products since the existing display center inside the Davao City SME Center is insufficient.
As per data of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII), the city is receiving an average of 500,000 domestic and foreign tourists every year. A number of which could already be considered as a big marker, the Chamber said.
Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, in his response to the resolution passed during the DCBC, said that the City Government "will not hesitate to endorse this (referring to the proposal). The mechanics and institutional arrangements can be discussed and made clear to the ATO (Air Transportation office) for their appreciation and hopefully, favorable action." (JMM)

paulkrps August 10th, 2005, 03:42 PM can somebody post historical buildings in davao? i was suppose to design a coffeetable on the history of davao but had to leave for toronto. or is it better that we have a separate topic? any suggestions?
KulasKusgan August 10th, 2005, 03:53 PM sure. we will. but the problem is, we dont know much of davao's past. can you give us listing of historical sites here. all i know is the city hall, japanese cemetery at mintal. i saw some bldgs along carpenter, agdao near sta ana wharf, they look old.
paulkrps August 10th, 2005, 04:18 PM there's some buildings (prewar) like furukawa. there's a lot of old houses and buildings in toril. yup, the japanese cemetery site at mintal. the dakudao (?) house at mintal. some of those warehouses along monteverde. i like that old bank (can't remember the name, was it prudential?) with greek facade, very meticulous detail). the first regional or provincial hospital is now the mental hospital. those houses in sta ana wharf are old. but for some reason probably for neglect has become the seedy side of davao.
singapore is an expert in restoring old shophouses. i hope in some way, we can still save some of what we have left.
i just hope that before they're all gone, we have digital documentation of it. i remember an old house along cm recto (in front of the usis office) which got demolished for unknown reason. what a waste to see the old trade school building just rotting away (or was it demolished now?).

The house on the corner in front of Sta Ana wharf used to be ours, my dad sold it along time ago to Henry Wee. My uncle still owns a bodega along the street.
go the the Davao Museum they'll have a good archive plus a lot of old timers are still around and they have very vivid memories of Old Davao. I can't remember his name but one of history buffs in Davao (I think he even wrote a book) is the owner of the Peter Pan bakeshop along torres, he also owns Harana.
YOu're right about Toril, there are a few old Japanese Tea?houses there left. Same with the NDC compound , you can still see the marks of the bombs and bullets on the bodega walls.
Another place is Tagum where the old colonia / Davao Penal colony is. Back prewar the idea was to put prisons in places where there were no people in order t colonize the place. My father in law grew up there but when I brough him back there he was dissapointed for all he could see was endless banana plantations , back then it was all wilderness and virgin forests!

He added that Philippine-EAGA initiatives were in full swing, with efforts currently focusing on strengthening local government participation in the sub-region as well as in pushing SME development flagship projects.

paulkrps August 12th, 2005, 09:11 PM ok guys, i'm starting a "i remember..." topic within this thread. bear with me as i have this bout of homesickness.
· during my younger years, we used to eat at princess something. it was near magnos i think. i love their bbq. i remember it was in front of dra. pangan's clinic.
· alan's commercial. i was just so bewildered with all those school supplies.
· merco's at claveria, the hamburgers, how i love them. that developed my like for the pickles. i wonder why kids now don't like 'em.
· those ac jeeps plying cortes to whereever. i remember passing queen's boutique. we used to live near the corner of cortes and mabini. then we moved on to valencia cottages, still on the same street.
· 3 sisters, loved their luglug. i love to look at all their collections from their travels in the states.
· me hang supermarket.
· assumption college of davao. now it's school of davao. i was there from grade 3-6. favorite teacher was ms. nillos. silahis frolics was the most awaited event every year. yay! 2 days of fun and mass some thing.
· trade school. was there my entire high school years. that's where i had my drafting skill.
· those cinemas! crest, lyric, galaxy, garmon & golden. sorry, diha ra nga mga sinehan ko nagtuyok. hehehe.
· the old js gaisano that burned down. oh how we love to go there after school. my one barkada would peep at the panties of the those mannequins! talk about hormonal changes.
· usis. love to go there and just read books.
· times, talomo and sunrise beaches. gamay ra gyud kog kalibutan sa una. more of talomo because of the meranti. meranti was the landing barge of valgosons. my dad worked with valgosons so he would bring us there. when he worked in indonesia, it made me more excited to the thought that he was there.
· coke plant then later volkswagen dealership. i dunno, probably because of it's art deco design.
· davao memorial park. i dunno, this was "the park" that i know of not rizal or magsaysay park. hehehe.
· san pedro memorial park, makahadlok compared to davao memorial park, gawas man gud ang pantyon. ngeee.
· the provincial jail (now central bank), diha ko hadlok kaayo kada agi namo.
· the davao of the old. low rise buildings. i think the tallest then as men seng (?). cuison was tall but it never really saw the light of day. samok nga lokasyon because of davao light (kung ngano man gud diha gibutang...). ac jeeps everywhere. the cbc and villa bus terminals.
· etc, etc.

On the same days, this time at the PTA Grounds, there will be a two-day fiesta of activities for the family featuring hot air balloon tethered flights, inflatables, wall climbing, mini-variety show featuring local artists, health campaign, palarong Pinoy and cultural performances.
Meanwhile, SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza will host on Aug. l3 and l7, a search for the Festival Symbol with Mindanaoan appeal. The search is intended to promote Davao City and Mindanao, its products and industries, particularly fashion, tourism and floriculture to be presented in a pageant and a fashion extravaganza juxtaposed with a tribal folklore.
On Aug. l6, 7 p.m. at the Centennial Park, Tunog Kadayawan will feature a one-and-a-half hour choral concert of 250 voices to serve as the grand recital of 10 participating choirs from all over the city who will undergo an extensive 10-day training conducted by the Philippine Madrigals.
The much-awaited Urog Etnika, a showcase of ingenuity, creativity and artistry of Mindanao-based fashion and floral utilizing locally woven fabrics, fibers and accessories, and other materials endemic to Mindanao will be held on Aug. l7, at the SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza.
The Kadayawan celebration heightens on the third day, Aug. l8, with the holding of the Davao River Festival, 8 a.m. to l2 noon at the Davao River. my first na pumuntang downtown area... wow!!! NASAAG KO!!! come to think of it. i wanted to go to Doverlanes JS Gaisano. I rode a puj from Mintal then dropped at Claveria (CM Recto) thinking na naa didto ang Doverlanes... Tama nga naman "Gaisano" kc ang landmark ko... hehe.. Gaisano Center pala ung binabaan ko..waaaahhh... paikot-ikot ako ng Claveria, Bolton, San Pedro, Bonifacio (ulitin pa) for ewan ko kung ilang ikot... then i felt too exhausted and feeling lost na talaga, i dared to ride a "PU" to note that P2.00 lang pera ko.

Almost the same here. Went to Times Beach almost every Sunday.Early morning swim was great. Went to Sirawan and Villa Victoria as well.
Used to walk from ADDU to San Pedro and see a movie and come back for the night class. Walking from Claveria to San Pedro was a breeze then. Go by Queens theater, make a left by UM. Plenty of snack bar around. Halu-halo was about 3.50-5.00 in the early 80's. Waffles were even cheaper.
Last time I visited Davao in 2000, I was shocked how much traffic there was around downtown.
paulkrps August 15th, 2005, 03:25 AM speaking of bowling. my earliest recollection of it was going to fairlanes. but i also remember there was a bowling lane in insular village. it was touted as the first automated bowling lanes, and that was in 70s. the building still stood when i left davao in 2000.
simply_me August 15th, 2005, 06:29 AM i also recall during the araw ng dabaw way back 1986, first year hs ako.. we joined the "indak-indak sa kadalanan" it was such a nice experience..
Today, we witnessed the opening ceremony of the Kadayawan Festival attended by many dabawenyos. there were the usual drum and bugle parade / motorcade that took route from the Rizal Park (fronting city hall) towards PTA grounds where Vice Mayor Louie Bonguyan led the ribbon-cutting. There was also the hot-air balloon which accommodate some interested to experience the ride (open also to public) unfortunately, di kami nakasakay since nahirapan silang i-control ung balloon. there were also games and variety show afterwards.
Pitctures coming up .... :)

KulasKusgan August 15th, 2005, 01:23 PM HISTORY OF DAVAO
The rich cultural, historical and artistic heritage of Davao comes from its various indigenous tribes. Among the predominant groups are the Bagobo, Mandaya, Mansaka, Manobo, Ata and B’laan tribes.
The word “Davao” is said to be a result of the phonetic blending of words from three Bagobo sub-groups, all meaning “beyond the higher grounds” or “over the hills yonder” and referred to the Davao River. The mouth of Davao River was the site of trading settlement in the past. When different tribes went to the area, they would say that they were going to “davoh" (Obo group), "duhwow" (Clatta group) or “dabu” (Tagabawa group) as the place was enveloped by the hills of Buhangin, Magtuod, Maa, and Matina. The Obos were considered the earliest tribe to settle in the area.
Led by Alvaro de Saavedra, the Spaniards - the first non-natives to visit Davao - arrived in the region in 1528. After the Spanish troops revolted and slayed Moro leader Datu Bago in 1847, a local hero who protected Davao from foreign invaders, Don Jose Oyanguren became the first governor of the province and renamed the place Guipuzcoa.
Way before World War ll, Davaoneos had an amicable relations with Japanese. In 1900, the Japanese established extensive plantations of abaca around the gulf area and was engaged in logging, fishing and trading. The increase of Japanese in the area earned Davao the nickname “Japan kuo” or “little Japan.”
Davao finally became a city in March 16, 1937 when President Elpidio Quirino formally inaugurated the signing of Davao as a charter city.

KulasKusgan August 15th, 2005, 03:03 PM @ paul: even some of my relatives are nikkei-jins. and yes, they are all in japan. according to philippine nikkei jin kai, davao has the largest number of descendants in mindanao.
paulkrps August 15th, 2005, 03:20 PM unlike other cities, i think davao has a colourful past. it's not only the japanese that has left some legacies but also other nationalities. which also made me wonder, did davao have some sort of jewish or any mid eastern communities? or spanish? i know we had spaniards in the early part of davao history (thanks to uyanguren), but did it grow to a community?
when i used to pass some cemeteries in bangkerohan, and see a lot of americans buried, i would wonder how vibrant they were in the 1900s.
KulasKusgan August 15th, 2005, 03:40 PM i think there are significant number of other nationalities lived here in DC. chinese, japanese, indonesians & spanish. i guess spanish are mostly in davao oriental since it was an old spanish town even before davao city became a city. ive seen some dabawenyo & mandaya tribesmen having features of spanish. americans were here as missionaries i guess. one thing i noticed, people here co-exist in harmony like lumads, bisaya, tagalogs, chinese, japanese & other nationalities.
lochinvar August 15th, 2005, 04:23 PM Would you know if there is already a sign that the other two "tribes" (NPA & Muslims) are going to finally co-exist with the rest of the people?

Davao:
The world’s largest city
Kadayawan Festival
From "murder city" to "one of the most livable cities in Asia" (identities bestowed upon by the defunct Asiaweek magazine). Indeed, Davao City has gone a long way.
Today, the city is one of the nation’s top tourist destinations. Recently, businessmen have chosen Davao as one of the most competitive metropolitan cities in the country, according to a report by the Asian Institute of Management Policy Center.
Most visitors describe Davao as "a land of exotic beauty and rich culture." Historians claim that the name Davao is derived from the ancient Bagobo word daba-daba, which means fire. Meanwhile, the Tagabua tribe called the river bisecting the region daba, and the Guiangan tribe tagged it davoh -- thus Davao.
Historical records show that the Spaniards, led by Alvaro de Saavedra in 1528, were the first foreigners to visit Davao. In 1847, after the Spanish troops revolted and killed Muslim leader Datu Bago, Don Jose Uyanguren became the first governor who renamed the place Guipuzcoa.
In 1900, the Japanese came and established extensive plantations of abaca around the gulf area, and at the same engaged in logging, fishing and trading.
The increase in the Japanese population earned Davao the nickname "Japan kuo" (little Japan). In 1937, Davao became a charter city when President Manuel L. Quezon signed a commonwealth law, which was sponsored by then Davao Assemblyman Romualdo Quimpo.
LARGEST CITY
With a total land area of 244,000 hectares, Davao is considered the largest city in the world, about 7.8 times the size of Cebu and three times that of Metro Manila. There were previous proposals to divide the city into three areas, but these never prospered.
There are two reasons which make Davao unique: its people and its warm hospitality. Davao City is a melting pot of 1.2 million -- both indigenous and migrants now being acculturated into the mainstream of society, creating a unique cosmopolitan culture.
Visayan migrants make up the majority of the population. The Ilongos and llocanos are also represented.
Coexisting with them are the Muslims and the indigenous tribes such as the Bagobo (who prefer to be called Tagabawa), Mandaya, Manobo, T’boli, Mansaka and B’laan.
"The solemn rituals of the tribes, their rhythmic dance steps and chanting music, and the rich customs and traditions of migrants make up the Davao culture of today," observed a local tourism official.
Most people speak Bisaya, particularly Cebuano. Other languages include Tagalog, Chinese and Muslim. The majority can speak and understand English. Eighty-four percent of the people are Roman Catholic, Protestants comprise 4.5%, and more than 2% practice Islam.
APO DUWALING
Davao is known for Mount Apo, the durian, and the exotic waling-waling. Mount Apo is the highest peak in the country at 3,143 meters. It takes about four days to traverse the summit.
Mountain climbers are urged to contact the Department of Tourism Office in Davao or the Mt. Apo Climbers Association of Davao City for tents, camping, gear, provisions, and guides.
The Davao Tourism Office also organizes Holy Week climbs called "Conquer Mt. Apo" and college semestral break ascents in October called "Octotrek." The trail are Tamayong (Calinan), Baracatan (Toril), and Eden (also in Toril).
The hike is a trek through tropical forest along hot and cold springs, hidden waterfalls, orchid varities and wild flowers, cicadas, and God’s other little creatures.
Durian, meanwhile, is known for its different odor. Some Westerners describe the fruit as "smells like hell but tastes like heaven."
In his diary, the 19th-century British naturalist Alfred Russel Wallace wrote that his journey to the East was worth it "if only to taste durian fruit."
Here’s a tip to visitors who would like to taste durian: After eating, put some water into the empty durian shell and wash your hands in it. This removes the odor. Try anything else -- detergents, deodorant, or any cleansing agent -- the smell will remain.
The exotic waling-waling (Vanda sanderiana) used to abound in the tropical forest of Mt. Apo and its surrounding areas.
"The waling-waling is almost extinct in the wildlife," said Dr. Domingo Madulid, the National Museum’s senior botanist. "Rarer varieties of this plant can only be found in expensive nurseries."
The waling-waling can be found at the Malagos Garden resort, which also hosts rare orchids. The resort has a restaurant, butterfly sanctuary, horseback riding facilities, fishponds, golf driving range, swimming pool, adventure playground, seminar halls, camp site, and cottages.
ENDANGERED SPECIES
One of the resort’s recent tourist attractions is the "Amazing Bird Show," which opens at 10 a.m. Sundays and has a message to the audience: Save the birds before they’d be gone forever.
Watching the show, American national Jonathan E. Rudy said, "I’ve been to Africa and South America and I think [the Philippines] has some of the most beautiful birds I’ve ever seen. But I’m disturbed to know that some of them are being shot and maimed for life."
Indeed, the Philippines is home to some of the world’s endangered bird species, and one of them is the Philippine Eagle.
Some of the remaining species can be found at the Philippine Eagle Center, about two kilometers away from the garden resort. A resident of the center, "Pag-asa" is the first eagle hatched scientifically and bred in captivity.
The other creatures in the center include hawks, owls, pythons, deers, monkeys and a Philippine crocodile.
The Crocodile Park is home to the country’s largest crocodile at 5.48 meters, and named "Pangil" (Pilipino for fang).
The 5.4-hectare mini-zoo houses several local crocodile species and a mini-zoo for wild cats, python, turtles, monitor lizard, monkeys and various kinds of birds.
FINE BEACHES
Davao also has a number of beaches. Times beach, two kilometers from the city center, bustles with visitors on weekends.
Historic Talomo beach is remembered as a landing site for Japanese and American forces in World War II. In fact, sunken warships can still be found 200 meters ashore.
The other beach resorts are Seagull and Felis in Punta Dumalag, Mergrande in Talomo, and Vales and High Ponds in Toril.
Across the strait due east from the mainland is Samal, an unspoiled island ringed with secluded coves of white sand. Ten minutes away via pumpboat from the Waterfront Insular Hotel is a white beach dotted wit resorts such as Paradise Island, which has several talisay trees.
The most popular resort by far is Pearl Farm. Nestled in a secluded cove on Samal island, it is 45 minutes by motor launch off the coast of Davao.
"In here," says one resort staff, "we only have one rule: We don’t allow anyone to leave unsatisfied."
For diving aficionados, Davao Gulf has underwater vistas. Some of the more popular sites are found on Ligid island, Talicud island, Mushroom Rock, Limao/Sunken island, Pearl Farm and Isla Malipano. These dive sites are 45 minutes to two hours away via pumpboat from the wharf of the Waterfront Insular Hotel, and a few minutes away from the Samal island piers.
For museum buffs, there is the Davao Museum at the Insular Village in Lanang district. Its main gallery is a repository of tribal art and other material culture such as tribal art costumes, jewelries, and handicraft. There is also a gallery of paintings, sculptures and ceramics and a souvenir shop of native crafts.
At the heart of the city is the San Pedro Cathedral, which was named after San Pedro, the patron saint of Davao. The church was built in 1847 under the supervision of Don Jose Uyanguren, the Spanish conquistador of Davao.
The old altar of then San Pedro church is preserved at the right wing of the cathedral which features antique images of saints and that of St. Peter.
FESTIVAL OF FESTIVALS
Davao comes alive with the celebration of the "Kadayawan sa Dabaw" every third week of August, coinciding with the harvest of fruits, flowers and agricultural produce.
Major thoroughfares are transformed into mardi gras-like celebration with the "Indak-indak sa Kadalanan" (street dancing) where performers in ethnic-inspired garments dance to tribal music, and followed by the floral float parade.
"Araw ng Dabaw" is celebrated on March 16 as Davaoeños remember the city’s founding. The event has a parade around major thoroughfares and is highlighted by the search for the Ambassadress of Goodwill.
San Pedro St. is adorned in celebration of St. Peter’s Day on June 19. The parochial festival features bazaars set up and the vicinity of the parish, selling souvenirs, accessories and religious items.
GETTING THERE
By air transport, Davao is a 90-minute travel from Manila, and 40 minutes from Cebu.
Regular flights come in from Manila, Cebu, Cagayan de Oro, General Santos and Camiguin and is serviced by Philippine Airlines, Air Philippines and Cebu Pacific. Two regional airlines also connect from Manado in Indonesia and Singapore.

Sarangani town pushes pawikan sanctuary
GEN. SANTOS CITY -- Officials in the town of Maitum, Sarangani are pushing for the declaration of at least seven coastal barangays as a sanctuary for pawikans, or marine turtles, following the release of more than 2,000 hatchlings to the sea since last year.
Tagging a rescued marine turtle
The need to declare the coastal barangays as turtle sanctuary came also because of the heightened awareness of the residents who, instead of butchering 21 adult marine turtles captured since last year, freed them.
Mayor George Yabes said the local government has established Barangay Old Poblacion as the nesting and study site for marine turtles. The barangay council of Old Poblacion has earlier declared the village, which was visited by at least 600 tourists so far this year, as a pawikan sanctuary, he added.
"Local residents are supporting our efforts to declare the coastal villages as a turtle sanctuary. They vowed to manage its environment for the sake of the future generations. After all, this is the greatest legacy we can offer to them," Mr. Yabes said.
Elizabeth Palma Gil, municipal information officer, said that residents have become more aware on the protection of the sea turtles and were helping the local government in preserving the creatures.
She recalled an incident late last month when a fisherman was about to butcher a juvenile hawksbill turtle but was prevented by his wife.
"She told the husband that killing the turtle is punishable by law. This is what the wife has learned from the information and education campaign regularly conducted by the local government to the barangay folk," Ms. Palma Gil said.
The municipal environment and natural resources office later on released the juvenile sea turtle, which measured 30 centimeters, she added.
Ms. Palma Gil said the biggest captured turtle (measuring 100 centimeters) in the locality was released on June 18 in Barangay Pinol.
"Our coastal barangays are breeding grounds of sea turtles and our local officials are working out for the proclamation of all seven [coastal] barangays as pawikan sanctuary," she noted.
In preparation for the proclamation, provincial legal officer Jenny Ramos has conferred with the barangays involved to delineate the sanctuary area.
Ms. Ramos has also gathered data with the Japanese government-funded Environmental Conservation and Protection Center based in Alabel, the capital of Sarangani.
Ms. Palma Gil said some 400 eggs are expected to hatch this month from different clusters in barangays Old Poblacion, Pinol, and Mindupok.
She said the presence of sea turtles in the coastal areas of Maitum proves that the municipality still has a diverse marine ecosystem.
In Alabel, meanwhile, fishermen on August 10 saved a juvenile hawksbill turtle that got entangled in their fishing nets while fishing in Sarangani Bay.
Nilo Villanueva and Jovy Cabog said they went fishing near a seagrass bed in Purok 7, Baybay Kawas when their nets caught the turtle at 7 a.m.
A team from the Environmental Conservation and Protection Center said the hawksbill was a female, about five to six years old, with a curved carapace length of 40 centimeters, and width of 38 centimeters.
Danny Taculin, protected areas supervisor of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, placed the turtle’s tag -- "PH6702" -- before it was set free two hours later.
Mr. Taculin reminded residents that possessing and disposing of marine turtles, turtle eggs, their meat or any of their by-products is punishable by law.
"Surfacing sea turtles is a common sight in the coastal waters of Sarangani," according to the study, entitled "Coastal Environment Profile of Sarangani Bay Area."
The most common species is the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas) and on some occasions the hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricate), he said.
Sarangani Bay and the adjoining municipal waters of Maasim, Kiamba, and Maitum was declared as a protected seascape by President Fidel Ramos on March 5, 1996 under proclamation no. 756.
It covers a total water area of 345 square kilometers.

heto nalang... im sure no other city would claim this: "from murder city/killing fields" to "most livable city with DDS" :bash:
paulkrps August 19th, 2005, 05:09 PM hahaha! why not "the city of many quotes" (like asiaweek's 15th most livable city, the largest city in the world, etc). my apologies for that, davao city is my home and it will always be in my heart.
my issue is, it's about time that davao city government sit down with advertising and marketing executives to map out a campaign to push davao forward. map out a consistent and creative image when producing promotional materials.
there should be an agency responsible for all of graphic materials that project davao. if you noticed, spain had one, and you can see it all over (posters, brochures, catelogues, etc). why can't we do that? the other, have you seen those billboards? they're all over, sometimes, the higher and bigger, the better. if we can have a control on those billboards built and erected, then less of an eyesore and driving hazard.
if we are to at least approach the so-called world class standards, then let's start now. davao has top designers waiting to be tapped.
KulasKusgan August 19th, 2005, 05:23 PM city sponsored campaign ads usually tackle smoking & the 911 hotline... like "VALUE LIFE, QUIT SMOKING" & "DIAL 911 for police, medical, rescue"
anyways, davao will be hosting the 2007( or perhaps earlier) Asean Tourism Forum after davao won the bid. that will be the time to shine.
in_com000 August 19th, 2005, 05:25 PM davao is a great city... oo... i mean a wonderful city kaya lng the mayors forgeting na kelangan din nyang magisip ng modernization. puro nalang SECURITY.,.. SECURITY nd more SECURITY...
sana he shud somehow be like cebu's mayr... more futuristic!
please mayor! more big ticket projects!!
like:
COASTAL ROAD
SAMAL-DAVAO Bridge
STA. Ana wafr modernization
Revamp of squatters along dvo river and making it a business park
New City hall
Traffic Lights!
more bridges and maximize the city's area... tatalo lang ata ang bridge sa may dvo river eh...
god... NEW bus terminal!
and PLEASE...
Modernize PTA! use it as a sports complex not as a lovers, pushers site!
more parks like bacolod
and FINISH ARTICA DOME!!
please be more futuristic... dnt put all our money on security
anyway... still hands up to duterte
KulasKusgan August 19th, 2005, 05:30 PM there are no big ticket projects in davao for now. the city instead will purchase some fifty hectares of land for resettlement of squatters. farm to markets roads will be constructed specifically Calinan to Toril road & Cabantian to Bunawan. sta ana wharf i guess would be the next project. yes, we need modern infra projects but the welfare of the people is on top priority i suppose.
slerz August 19th, 2005, 06:01 PM thinking for the city's future is also for the welfare of its people, financialwise....modernization of its infras can lead to a very healthy economy that can benefit its people like job opportunities....less job opprtunities means chaos that may lead to crimes and more of executions of the DDS....Davao at this moment has a satable economy but the Mayor should balance everything, Davao plays a big role in our economy and known to be the capital of Mindanao so why not develop more its infras and more projects?....He already has achieved his aim to make the city safe from everything, now its time to develop more the city with regards to big projects as what in com000 said...
KulasKusgan August 19th, 2005, 06:22 PM those projects mentioned by incom000 are actually part of davao integrated devt plan 1997 - 2020 (im not sure with the time frame). Sta Ana Wharf to Bolton Bridge will be transformed into marina complex, Davao-Samal Bridge, Coastal Road Project, Davao MRT, etc
DDS has calmed down.
i think the flow would be like this:
security > rural devt > major infra
ngayon, nasa step 2 na. the city will construct roads to facilitate faster transport of agri products, provide relocation site or bring people to rural part of davao. one step at a time lang muna since davao's income is not enough for more than a million people and 244,000 hectares of land.
paulkrps August 19th, 2005, 08:00 PM i remember 7 or 8 yrs the formulation of didp. too impossible a dream? hope not. i don't know if the bolton bridge was part of that, plus the widening of major highways, buhangin underpass and the completion of the davao international. i just hope that with 15 years (if that's it) to go they can address even half of it. but with the problems facing the country, then it would head to naught.
but to be optimistic, so many things happened (thanks to the private sector). what i would like to see is - our city planners should at this point, revise or at least envision a davao 10-20 or even 50 years from now. the downtown core will be fully saturated. the city government should plan new urban cores and streets at this point.
the dispersal of these urban cores is fully logical, you disperse population, traffic and development. what we have now is that the downtown core absorbing so much. maybe by then there will be several urban centers particularly calinan, panacan, toril & buhangin or maybe as far as buda, astorga and lasang. this will be mini-cities in itself. i don't think exisiting 2-way, 4-lane streets will be able to absorb the number of vehicles. probably create expressways that will run parallel to the maharlika hi-way.
what do you have by then? a fully integrated transit system, well planned city streets of dispersed urban cores, a coastal road or highway stretched from north to south, connecting to samal. possibly hi-rise appartments to absorb dislocated residents and influx of immigrants from other cities. why hi-rise apartments, we conserve city space and can create parks and other purposes.
by that time, urban sprawl will be much evident. can we choose of what type development we want? sprawl or hi-rise? depends on the choice and the available resources. much of the excitement we have now is the influx of malls. do we need it? yes, but do we need more? what we need now the creation and improvement of a manufacturing sector for more job creation.
much of davao's development has been concentrated on probably just 10 percent of it's total land area. we might have room, but let's use it rationally and logically. for chances are, our often bragged resources will disappear our very eyes (like water).
so guys, let's envision davao, 50 years hence, what are your thoughts?

i remember hearing about the coastal road so many years back, then it disappeared. i think a victim of the 1997 asian currency crisis. i think they should push this thru so as to motorists will have a choice where to pass going to downtown. just imagine, if the ulas bridge will have a breakdown GOD forbid.

City continues to enjoy 100% hotel occupancy
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
DAVAO Tourism Association (Data) president Arturo Boncato said the 100 percent hotel occupancy rate being enjoyed by the city starting last week is expected to continue until Sunday.
Boncato said on the average each two guests are occupying hotel room. To date, the city has around 2,800 hotel rooms.
With the vibrant business scenario in the city, Boncato said, not only the hotels are benefiting from it but as well as the restaurants, souvenir items sellers, and even the taxicabs.
Boncato said the celebration of the Kadayawan Festival is giving so many opportunities for the business sector.
As to the possible threats to the city's peace and order situation, Boncato said, there is nothing to be afraid of.
"The threat is global, it's not exclusive to Davao and we have seen that the local government as well as the National Government are doing their best to address it," he said.
Aside from thousands of visitors who are witnessing the festivities, a huge number of delegates were also here few days ago to attend various conventions.
The Mindanao Agri-Fisheries Investment Forum last August 16 brought in some 200 visitors while the 2nd Mindanao Vegetable Congress on August 18-19 had more than 500 participants.
bustero August 20th, 2005, 06:00 AM Davao City does have a long term development Plan, the roads linking to Cabantian to Bunawan is a good example. matagal lang ang implementation due ot budgetary constraints.
It doesn't go to 50 years though , that's a really long time, 25 years is already very much guess work, 10 years is budgetable. e.g. Davao Samal Bridge should be built in 10 -15 years but in 50 years, transportation could be different (boat cars anyone!).
Actually my fear for Davao is that it will sprawl , like LA, i think this is a very bad thing, modern urban planning recognizes that this is a very inefficient way of urban development. If you look at Curitiba, a similar sized city in Brazinl with world reknowned urban planning, the mayor who was an urban planner by profession and training, was very prescient. He had a dense, vertical , urban walking core, then mass transport to secondary live/work communities (toril and calinan would be perfect). This way no need uproot so much farms and forests and lay out hundreds of kilometers of sewage pipes, and water pipes and electrical lines and phone lines etc.
Anyway I'd like to see in 5 to 10 years,
A new airport, bigger than this one, very critical , we can't land a 747 / A380 plus no taxiways to have consecutive landing! Very important if Davao is to develop as a key city and develop tourism. You can't have 2-3 million city with that airport , as it can only land 8 planes per hour and most probably you need thin lines for Davao.
Expand Diversion and North (until Tagum) and South ( Toril then eventually Digos) Highways to min of 2 lanes , pref 3 then make it dedicated, no stop lights all freeway.
Finish the alternative coastal road, at least 2 lanes again preferable 3, mostly freeway.
LRT North to South From Bunawan to Toril, feeder dedicated tramways with right of way at Buhanging to Cabantian, tionko to elrio to mandug, bangkerohan to Dizon Area, Maa , Catalunan pequeno and grande, and one all the way to Calinan
Skyway from Dumoy to Panacan Connecting to east west highways
Obviously a few more bridges,
Davao Samal Bridge, and I want a landmark bridge as in Icon for Davao , like the golden Gate but more modern/high tech
No copper wires , all optic with fat pipes for all areas, like Korea, Bandwidth will determine future development,
Expand Sasa, or they may need to move it, We have no efficient container terminal, so there should be one capable of serving at least 2 post panamax box movers concurrently.
Raise all NSAT scores of all schools, above average and within top 20 of WORLDWIDE standards, very important
KulasKusgan August 20th, 2005, 08:26 AM this is how see davao in 20 (or 50?) years:
> per bustero's fear, i can see the LA type of devt
> world-class marina complex in sta ana wharf to bolton isla
> coastal road from bolton isla to toril via ecoland, matina aplaya, central park, talomo
> MRT from downtown to toril, calinan & panacan
> davao-samal bridge from sasa to brgy caliclic in samal
> transfer of international airport to tigatto or callawa area or samal island
> convert diversion road to expressway
> ecotourism devt on ridges-baracatan, sibulan, catigan, eden, tamayong & marilog
> and a landmark monument preferably a bagobo with durian

were these projects mentioned/looked upon already by the government officials?
JoeyIncali August 20th, 2005, 09:44 AM Davao Samal Bridge, and I want a landmark bridge as in Icon for Davao , like the golden Gate but more modern/high tech
But, that will probably ruin Samal.
For selfish reasons, I'd really like Samal to be the way it is now.
Limited tourism and rural residence.
My brother was in Isla Rita last year. He said, he notice garbage in the ocean floor.
True, Davao should go vertical instead of sprawling like LA.
Build high rise residences around downtown/Claveria/Uyanguren area and maybe have a mono-rail go around the city.
KulasKusgan August 20th, 2005, 11:42 AM were these projects mentioned/looked upon already by the government officials?
mostly yes. these are part of davao integrated devt plan:
> world-class marina complex in sta ana wharf to bolton isla
> coastal road from bolton isla to toril via ecoland, matina aplaya, central park, talomo
> MRT
> davao-samal bridge
this already spelled out by dept of tourism
> ecotourism devt on ridges-baracatan, sibulan, catigan, eden
paulkrps August 20th, 2005, 12:15 PM i agree with the bridge, it should be iconic. it could be add as an image booster for davao and samal.
the expressway should be in a way that should address land claims, etc. the main problem of the diversion road expansion and the new airport has been settling land claims and squatters. what the government should do at this point, make a study of all the developments, and those land claims and squatters.
i noticed that whenever there's a demolition somewhere in the city, they are moved to a place let's say cabantian which we know in 10 years will be experiencing some form of urbanization.
would a medium to hi-rise apartment units be ideal instead of a mass housing units? what is besettling is, it adds to urban sprawl. would it be better to conserve land use at this point? toronto is experiencing the greatest rise of urban sprawl. and it is now encroaching to those ecologically sensitive areas. i hope davao doesn't fall victim to it's own development greed.
and another, davao's core centre geologic structure i think is marshy. if you noticed those construction sites, there's a lot of soft soil around. my own observation is, downtown is like a delta. i don't know if it can support big structures, it can probably lead to davao sinking a few inches each year.
for taller structures, ideally it would be going buhangin, panacan to bunawan, it's more limestone in foundation but not lasang towards panabo, more marhsy because of those rice paddies.
Sinjin P. August 20th, 2005, 12:36 PM The CURT has already been approved by the local and national government... Now, Cebu City with the help of Mayor Tomas Osmena is looking for investors, specifically Japanese investors to fund this project... This very ambitious projects aims to provide a mass transportation alternative for the city. Phase 1 would include the Minglanilla to Liloan (via the SRP and NRA).
On the other hand, The Friendship Bridges proposal (suspension bridges) that would link Santander town (southernmost tip of Cebu) to Bais City in Negros and Cordova to Jetafe, Bohol (via Olango Island) have been realized... This project is included in the 1st priority projects of PGMA.. When operational, these bridges would be as beautiful or more beautiful than Golden Gate and London Bridge...

The history of Davao City is never complete if the history of the University of Mindanao is not mentioned. For out of the ravages of World War II, a man with a vision, Atty. Guillermo E. Torres, conceived of a dream to extend education to the Mindanaons, specially the lumads and those poor but deserving students.
Finally, the dream became a reality as Mindanao Colleges, now University of Mindanao was finally incorporated in July 27, 1946.
Classes during the first year of its operation were held in four (4) rented rooms of the Borgaily Building along San Pedro Street in Davao City. Dr. Efigenia C. Occena was designated Acting Coordinator. Thirteen teachers were hired. There was a total enrollment of 381 students.
The opening of the Mindanao Colleges gave hope to college-bound students who could not afford to go to Cebu or Manila.

ASEAN forum to propel DC to tourism world map: Durano
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations Tourism Forum (ATF) would serve as the litmus test for local tourism players and local government officials whether or not Davao City is ready to become a world-class destination.
Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano said the ATF would provide Davao City a window of opportunity to join the ranks of Cebu, Boracay and Palawan as a world-class destination.
“I firmly believe that the ATF will boost the tourism industry in Davao City and Mindanao, in the same way that it propelled Cebu City after holding the same tourism forum in 1998,” he told participants of the ATF press conference Saturday at the Marco Polo Hotel.
The Philippines first hosted the ATF in Manila in 1993, second in 1998 in Cebu City and third will be on 2006 in Davao City. The next time the Philippines will host the ATF, he bared, would be in the year 2016.
Durano formally announced the holding of the ASEAN Tourism Forum in Davao City on January 13-21 next year. The affair is expected to draw in tourism secretaries of the 10-member ASEAN and 3,000 visitors from Southeast Asia, Japan, Korea, China, Europe and the United States.
“The forum has two components namely the ministerial meeting of all tourism secretaries in ASEAN member countries and ASEAN travel exchange among 3,000 travel sellers in the world who will showcase their tourist attractions and destinations,” he said.
He also revealed the government has two reasons for holding the ATF in Davao City instead of showcasing other areas in the city.
“First, President Gloria Arroyo prodded the idea of holding the ATF in the Davao City and second, Davao City is now ready to get the international exposure as the next pillar of tourist destination in the country as correctly captured in the slogan form Island to Highlands,” Durano said.
On the other hand, Davao City mayor Rodrigo Duterte believes holding the ATF 2006 in the city poses a big challenge for the local government in the areas of infrastructure like the drainage system and the peace and order.
“The ATF poses a tall order for Davaoeños to expedite the city drainage project. It is set at a time when we do everything humanly possible to contain possible security threats, knowing that terrorism continues to hound the world, with the city not excluded,” Duterte said.
Duterte said the city government is willing to put up for the P20 million capital for holding the ATF in Davao.
He called on Councilor Susabel Reta, chair of the city council committee on tourism to look for money as he admitted that the city government is hard pressed in addressing other urgent concerns like school buildings for the city high school.
“It behooves on Councilor Reta to put things in order at the city council in order to pass the corresponding legislation to look for money for the forum.
“Davao City is a beautiful. The government only needs it to be clean and peaceful,” Duterte said. JGD

Indak-Indak, Dance Fest heat up Kadayawan '05
DAVAO City's major streets were filled with the spirit of thanksgiving as people gather to witness and participate in the much-awaited Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan on Saturday.
The outstanding performance of far-off contestant from Lanuza, Surigao del Sur got them the first prize, a whopping P500,000!
Not to be outdone is a homegrown entry, the Magallanes Elementaray School bagging the second prize bringing home P300,000. Meanwhile, entry from Malita, Davao del Sur and Maragusan, Davao Oriental got third and fourth places, respectively with P150,000 and P75,000 cash prizes.
Meanwhile, ten consolation prizes worth P10,000 each and twenty consolation prizes of P5,000 each was given to non-winning entries.
Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan is the people's celebration through street dancing and merriment to the beats of tribal music. This year, 31 participants from different schools and art companies all over Mindanao are set to best each other with their unique presentations of their respective interpretations of the theme Subay Sulay sa Buhing Kabilin.
Dabawenyos were treated to well-crafted performances from the different schools in the region.
Meanwhile, Matina Elementary School and Pangkat Silayan Theater Collective of the University of Southeastern Philippines share the limelight after they bagged the grand prize for the junior and senior categories of the Mindanao Indigenous Dance Festival at SM City Davao Entertainment Plaza on Friday.
After passing the preliminary competition last August 16 and 17, Matina Elementary School bested 12 other entries all over Mindanao in the junior category, while USEP emerged as the best among 17 others in the senior category.

Mall wins top prize in floral float tilt
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THOUSANDS of people trooped to various streets of Davao City Sunday to witness the Floral Float Parade, won anew by NCCC Mall of Davao, whose entry sent "a message of unity and progress."
The parade, one of the highlights of Kadayawan sa Dabaw, capped the week-long festivities.
People from neighboring provinces and cities and foreign tourists visited the city to join in the Kadayawan celebration and have an actual experience of how festive and colorful the float parade is.
On Saturday, thousands of people also flocked the city streets to witness another highlight of the festival, the Indak-Indak sa Kadalanan, participated in by various cultural dance troupes from all over Mindanao.
There were 23 floats of various establishments and institutions who joined in Sunday's parade--13 of which joined in the competing division while the remaining 10 were non-competing.
Of the 13 competing entries, five entered in the large category while the eight were for the small category.
NCCC Mall topped the large category, followed by SM City Davao and Chowking, also last year's 2nd and 3rd placers, respectively.
The Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (Fidi)'s entry won first prize in the small category. RDL came in second, and Sul Orchids copped third place.
The parade started at 7 a.m. on R. Magsaysay Avenue. It then passed through the streets of C.M. Recto, Bonifacio, Legaspi, San Pedro, exited on Quezon Boulevard and ended at the PTA Ground.
Among those competing in the large category were NCCC Mall, SM City Davao, Rogemson's Bambini Cosmetics, and Chowking.
While Greenwich Pizza, SUL Orchids, Floriculture Industry of Davao Inc. (Fidi), RDL Products, Club Vee Dub Davao, PCEEM, Leonardo Direct Sales, and SK Federation participated in the small category.
Marjun Marcelo Cristobal, the designer of SM City Davao's float, earlier said that with the way he interpreted the theme "Sulay Subay sa Buhing Kabilin", the company has a huge chance of grabbing the top prize.
The float of SM City Davao featured a family, all clad in native costumes.
"This means that in preserving our culture, everything should start in the family," he said.
Aileen Gajo of the Public Relations Department of NCCC Mall, said their float sent the message of unity and progress.
"This year's float features the Philippine Eagle and its offspring, representing a conscious effort of conserving it for the next generation. Our float was designed by Romeo Chua," she said.
Cristobal and Gajo refused to divulge the cost of their floats.

KulasKusgan August 22nd, 2005, 03:46 PM re: kadayawan. i would say a cultural theme park based on it would be nice (hmm, probably, i'll have it much earlier like 10-15 years).
yeah, a cultural village would be nice. or a combined ecotourism project.
re: city hall, i would like somthing much taller. the current lack's some aura, i'd like a more modern touch.
i think the city needs to transfer to a bigger area. san pedro st is too crowded for a city hall.
a riverside park stretching all the way to maa. question, how do you get rid of illegal stuctures along the banks?
yah, they need to stretch davao river park & promenade. presently, only 150 meters and one can hardly notice its presence. once they build a decent park along the banks from bucana all the way to speed city in maa, those squatters will eventually disappear.
Sinjin P. August 23rd, 2005, 01:12 PM an ILOCANO, pro DAVAO forumer is currently at the CEBU thread at nanggugulo...He's insulting our buildings and said that Marco Polo Hotel in Davao was better... To that forumer, sorry if we didn't meet your expectations... What you saw was an ugly building because we weren't able and we lack digicams from Cebu forumers so we failed to post pics that would let you speak for yourself. He even stated that Davao was booming more than Cebu... Well our eyes and ears know it all, Cebu is even catching up to Manila...
PEACE!
Sinjin P. August 23rd, 2005, 01:13 PM another thing, does this forumer just show how the filipinos act? nagbabangayan? Thank You!
KulasKusgan August 23rd, 2005, 01:29 PM no one here in davao forum is named TALLERS. did you check his location? verify first.
Sinjin P. The declaring of Cebu as Queen City of the South would also pose a challenge to other provinces to improve and stabilize their economy.
slerz August 23rd, 2005, 04:28 PM I think that forumer is not active sa SSC coz he joined last Nov 2004 pa and 3 pa lang ang na post nya....
regarding my pic, we still can't conclude if the building is ugly or not coz it is still a skeleton, its a 36 storey building and it is still in its 5th floor construction....lets conclude if the building is completed already....kahit gaano kagandang building kung kinoconstruct pa lang tlagang ugly...

bustero August 23rd, 2005, 05:00 PM Well everyone is entitled to their own opinion ( I don't agree with many opinions here in ssc myself) but unless he's flaming you it's basically within reason. You can just ignore it or address it in the proper venue. If his opinion of Cebu and Davao are not agreeable with you post your reaction in the thread where it came out. I don't see any post here talking much about other cities except Davao.

paulkrps August 25th, 2005, 02:44 AM about kadayawan, i think somebody in the government and private sector should explore a cultural theme park/resort based on kadayawan. kadayawan is getting big, but it's only alive on the 3rd quarter of the year. for all it's cultural and educational worth, it's not really getting thru it's message.
i mean, cultural authenticity is a must in understanding our roots, but i don't think everybody understand what lumad culture really is. my personal opinion is, why can't we establish a cultural theme park complete with a museum that would house lumad culture. it should be a celebration of what lumad culture and way of life. it should be a tribute to what it has contributed to what is davao.
i've watch these indak parades and competition when i was there so many years back. i was disappointed because a lot of this dance steps are not lumad. before everybody gets lost in the frenzy, why can't we reexamine everything. if we are to celebrate lumad culture, at least we should have a good research before distorting it.
i hope that with these, we can really celebrate and be proud of our lumad cultural and not just tap on their culture to make money. where's the power of royalty when you need them?

slerz August 25th, 2005, 04:38 AM WoW! great pics.... I hope Davao have also reached a 1 million mark of tourists visited during the festival just like Cebu's more than 1 million tourists that visited Cebu last January's Sinulog.

I'm really impressed with the Kadayawan Festival! Sinulog and Kadayawan are two of the biggest festivals in the country. Sinulog is considered the most lavish and Kadayawan i think has the most number of dancing contingents / participants or sort of like that. :)

KulasKusgan August 26th, 2005, 03:46 AM PHILIPPINES' DoT HAILS DAVAO'S TOURISM SLOGAN ISLAND TO HIGHLAND
Wednesday August 24, 2005, 6:26 pm
DAVAO CITY, Aug 24 Asia Pulse - Davao City's tourism slogan "Island to highland" is captivating, said Tourism Secretary Joseph "Ace" Durano.
"A lot of tourists were captured by your slogan, you captured it very well," he said at a press conference held at the Marco Polo Davao hotel over the weekend.
With the city's increasing number of tourist arrivals during the first half of the year compared to last year's as earlier announced by Department of Tourism (DoT) regional director Sonia Garcia, tourism industry here is on the right track, Durano said.
Garcia earlier said tourist arrivals in the city rose 15-20 per cent during the first six months of this year compared to last year's.
Durano said the city's potential as an international tourist destination has prompted President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to choose Davao as host city of the upcoming Asean Tourism Forum (ATF) where over 3,000 international delegates are expected to attend.
The current positive trend in the city's tourism and the forthcoming ATF to be held here "will make Davao a bustling international tourist destination," Durano said.
He noted 12 tourism councils of other countries plus various tour operators and travel agencies in other countries will be coming over to the city to attend the ATF.
"That's the type of international exposure Davao City will get," Durano said as he affirmed that the city is ready for such.
Aside from the beauty and tourism potentials of Davao, Durano hailed the Davaoeos' hospitality which has captured domestic and international tourists. He was here over the weekend to witness the finale events of the Kadayawan festivities.
"At the end of the day victory will be here. At the end of the day we say it's all because of Davao and its people," Durano said.

Air link between Davao, Kota Kinabalu pushed
By Jenny Molbog-Mendoza
THE chairmanship of the Philippines in next year's Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asean Growth Area Business Council (BEBC) will fast track the setting up of a direct flight from Davao City to Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia, Mindanao Business Council (MBC) chair Antonio Santos said.
Santos said Monday the MBC is strongly pushing for such air link in a bid to further boost the movement of goods and services between the two countries.
Since the MBC is at the forefront of BIMP-Eaga, Santos said, it will sit as the chair of the BEBC.
"Whoever is the chair of the MBC will also be the chair of the BEBC. If that would be the case, mas magiging firm ang pagsusulong natin sa nasabing plano. May say na kasi tayo," he said.
The MBC is tapping the Sea Air to be the official carrier of Davao-Kota Kinabalu flight.
"During our initial discussion with the management of Sea Air, they are willing naman na magkaroon nga ng direct flight from Davao to KK. They are interested talaga. Actually, the national government is the one hampering everything. Pero we are very sure na kapag tayo na ang head ng BEBC, mas mamadaliin nila ang processing ng documents. Mangungulit talaga kami nang husto," he said.
Santos said the setting up of such flight will also create growth in the country's tourism industry since Malaysia has a total of two million tourists roaming everywhere yearly.
"Kahit five percent man lang dyan ay madadala natin sa Davao, napakalaking bagay na," he said.

DC not yet ready to host an IT park
THE Association of Solution Integrators in Davao (Asid) has revealed that Davao City is not yet ready to host an information technology (IT) Park.
"Unfortunately, we are not yet ready to have one. In the first place, wala pa tayong location na pwedeng paglagyan ng lahat ng industries that are involved in developing IT. Marami pang preparations na dapat gawin," said Asid president Rodney Jao.
The present status of the IT industry in the city is still "so thin" that it cannot yet manage to have its own IT park.
"It is so difficult to convene all the stakeholders. 'Yong tipong, you let them sit down in one place and discuss everything about the industry. I think we still have to educate everybody, from the local government unit (LGU) down to the people who are into IT business, that by collaborating efforts, Davao City will have a chance to grow just like Cebu. Based on the Cebu experience kasi they all recognize the importance of IT in achieving economic growth," he said.
In the case of Davao City, Jao said, the focus is still on the aspect of being an agriculture economy, where in fact, the city has a huge potential of becoming an IT hub.
"We are not getting yet all the attention of the entire community. Everybody is thinking that we are just a banana city. Well, that's okay but we must also try to look at the other potentials of the city. We have the best IT manpower here. In fact, if you'll visit the call centers in Cebu and Manila, you'll find out that the bulk of their employees are from Davao. And the number of IT businesses in the city has also grown up. Dati lima lang kami sa Asid, ngayon nagging 15 na kami. It just shows that the industry is growing," Jao said.
Having all these potentials, Jao said, a vibrant future for the city's IT industry is still there waiting to be discovered.
Jao reiterated that by the partnership of both the private and government sectors, the planned IT park will be achieved. (JMM)

kiretoce August 26th, 2005, 11:09 PM THE OTHER VIEW: Scent of Durian
By Elmer A. Ordoñez Saturday, August 27, 2005
The scent was pervasive throughout our sojourn in Davao—from our arrival at its world-class international airport to our five-day stay in the city for the Kadayawan festival, and our flight back to Manila.
It is a scent redolent of other exotic (to us Luzonians) places in Mindanao, and also in Penang, where my wife would send me out nights in August to some kampong to bring her the fruit that, to some, “smells like hell and tastes like heaven.” It was an acquired taste for her (turning to addiction) whereas I took to it immediately years ago when her parents sent us years ago refrigerated samples (wrapped in foil) with other goodies from their Davao farm.
I suppose durian is to Davao as kadios is to Iloilo, pili is to Bicol and saluyot is to Ilocos. Such items are now available in Metro Manila markets, but I am always pleased to discover them there. Abroad, durian is of the Thai variety and sold in Chinatown groceries.
When my sister-in-law, Elisa, said she and two friends were going to Davao for the Kadayawan festival we tagged along and planned to visit writer friends Aida Rivera Ford and Tita Lacambra-Ayala, two artists who have put Davao on the literary map. As it happened, Aida lives just across the street from our host’s residence on Gardenia Street, San Pedro Village. On our first night Cora Calderon called Aida to come over for supper and a surprise.
Aida was one of the writers from Silliman, where she was the first editor of Sands and Coral, which gave UP’s Literary Apprentice a run for its money. Silliman then was well known for acerbic critics like Edilberto and Edith Tiempo, Ricaredo Demetillo and Dolores Stephens Feria (the last two moved to Diliman in 1953)—all schooled in New Criticism. Ruben Canoy was another Silliman writer who transferred to Diliman and became one of the editors of the 1949-50 Apprentice together with William Pomeroy and SV Epistola. Canoy eventually missed Silliman and returned.
For her well-crafted short stories in Now and at the Hour Aida was awarded a fellowship in 1954 to study for an M.A. in English at the University of Michigan. Upon her return she taught at the University of Mindanao and the Ateneo de Davao—where she in turn developed new writers who now comprise the Davao Writers Guild. Her recent book Born in the Year 1900 (marking her mother’s birthday, not hers, Aida noted) was launched in 1998. ALIWW (Ateneo Library of Women Writers) honored her as among the distinguished writers in their roster.
Aida and I worked together in the literary arts committee of the National Commission for Culture and Arts in the early ’90s. She was the literary coordinator (for Mindanao) for both the Cultural Center of the Philippines and the NCCA.We had occasion to hold national conferences and workshops on regional literature where Aida presented the case for Mindanao literature—from Lumad to Muslim and Christian texts.
In Davao we had a seminar on the top floor lookout of Aida’s Ford Academy of the Arts, where Victorio Edades as director of art and Jean Edades as English professor taught and nurtured young artists. Victorio as we know was a National Artist for the Visual Arts, and Jean, who had a column “English Made Easy” in The Manila Times, was one of three expatriates who decided to make the country of their Filipino husbands their own. The others were Sophie Rodolfo who ran a school in Zambales and wrote her memoirs of her family and life with the progressive UP zoologist, Dr. Agustin Rodolfo, and Dolores Stephen Feria (she and Professor Rodrigo Feria were friends of Carlos Bulosan) who went underground during martial law, was captured, and later wrote about her incarceration in Barbed Wire Journal.
Our trip to Davao was made memorable by a visit to Aida’s Riverford—a theme park some 15kms from the city center in the countryside called Catalunan Grande. Here the bigger than life size statues of two National Artists for Literature—Nick Joaquin (with a beer bottle in hand) and NVM Gonzalez (with a pensive look)—stand tall among the foliage of the well kept mini-resort which includes a trail leading down to a gorge and waterfall of the Talomo river. Here, writers in Davao, now including poet and chancellor of UP Mindanao Ricardo de Ungria, have met and discussed Philippine literature. Here, one can relax and do some serious writing.
Our stay was so short we didn’t have a chance to look up Tita Lacambra, whose writer husband Joe Ayala once invited me to visit the Ayala farm where part of it is now a nature park called Eden near Toril. We also missed the artist Joan Edades, Don Pagusara, recent Palanca first prize winner for the short story, and Macario Tiu, an award winning fictionist in English. There’s always a next time when the scent of durian beckons.

What happened to the cyber city call center academy, natuloy ba?
no idea. ive heard there are at least 2 private call centers here.
anyways, this is the only call center im sure 100% existing here:
DAVAO CITY 911
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911mainLogo.jpg
Davao City 911 adapted the concept of 911 that originated in the United States of America. They did not only adapt the concept but the call numbers 911 as well. It is the brainchild of the City Mayor Honorable Rodrigo R. Duterte as part of his peace and order program.
Launched in partnership with the Davao Light and Power Company, whose software – the Electronic Computer Aided Dispatch system or ECAD enables a functional system of saving lives.
CALL CENTER
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911cc7.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911cc5.jpg
The 911 Call Center is responsible for answering emergency calls and logging the appropriate information on the ECAD system. The call takers pinpoint the precise location of the emergency on GIS maps projected on their computer monitors. The information extracted is automatically sent to the dispatcher who deploys the appropriate responder nearest to the scene of emergency.
What is the ECAD System?
ECAD or the Electronic Computer Aided Dispatch System is a computer program developed by the Davao Light and Power Company which is being used by Central 911 to pinpoint the exact location of the emergency. It utilizes GIS maps plotted with grid lines to triangulate location of the caller . It also captures stores and recalls data in an electronic database.
URBAN SEARCH AND RESCUE SERVICES
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911usar8.jpg
Another pride of Davao City 's 911 is its elite Urban Search and Rescue Unit. Trained by the Army's Special Forces and the Philippine Airforce, this search and rescue unit is equipped with high-tech and cutting edge rescue tools and equipments for various cases like road accident extrications, high-angle operations, swift-water rescues, open sea and deep water rescues, confined space operations, and even animal control cases.
EMERGENCY MEDICAL SERVICES
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911ems1.jpg
Central 911 is manned by highly trained and competent emergency medical technicians ready to respond to medical emergencies. Each 911 ambulance is equipped with state of the art basic life support and life saving equipment and has communication gadgets linked to the Call Center and the Davao Medical Center . 911 EMS unit caters to pre-arrival and pre-hospital emergency medical care. They also conduct on-line or telephone triage and transport patients to medical facilities.
FIRE AUXILIARY SERVICES:
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911fas1.jpg
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911a.jpg
To complement the fire fighting ability of the Bureau of Fire Protection, Central 911 has established its own Fire Auxiliary Services Unit. These highly technical and well trained fire fighters operate and follow the incident command system during fire cases for the efficient operation and collaboration with the BFP and other Volunteer Fire Fighters. The 911 Fire Auxiliary Services Unit is trained and equipped to respond to high-rise fires and even the dreaded inner-skirt fires in highly populated areas
K9 UNIT
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911k910.jpg
Another feature of Davao City 's 911 is its very own K-9 unit. Its bomb and drug sniffing dogs were specially trained in Camp Crame . The 911 K-9 unit operates daily at the Davao City International Airport and other strategic places to help curb the threats of terrorism.
POLICE ASSISTANCE
http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a157/kulaskusgan/911/911.jpg
Central 911 provides police emergency assistance by dispatching mobile patrol units nearest to the crime scene. The City Government has provided the Davao City Police Office with Mobile Patrol Cars each equipped with radio communication equipment linked to the 911 Call Center.

Councilor seeks bike lanes amid looming oil crisis
DAVAO City Councilor Leonardo R. Avila III Thursday called on the City Council committee on energy and transportation to work on the establishment of bicycle lanes as the energy crisis looms.
Avila, who pushed for an ordinance on bike lanes along city streets in September last year, said this is the opportune time that the city must finally put up lanes exclusively for bicycles.
The councilor said his proposal also aims to promote cycling or biking so as to help lessen air pollution.
Aside from its environmental advantage, Avila said biking is also a practical mode of transportation in going to school or work and a way of saving cost on fare, gasoline or parking fee.
He said he has already tapped Global Environment Facility (GEF) to help in the putting up of the propose bicycle lanes.
Avila said the GEF set up funds from different countries to support projects that will help prevent global warming.
The councilor said the cities in other countries, which are relatively advanced in terms of the promotion of healthy lifestyle and environmental protection, have established bike lanes in their thoroughfares. (AAG)

KulasKusgan August 29th, 2005, 01:13 PM Dizon farms ?
yes. dizon farms. within the vicinity are crocodile park and speed city (drag race track).
@ rusty: i hope this one will succeed. there were projects like this in the 90's like First Oriental Industrial Park, Millenium City, and Pryce Business Park. Today, only Pryce Business Park came to materialized.

Vice mayor hopes to pass 5 landmark ordinances
By Ben O. Tesiorna
DAVAO City Vice Mayor Luis Bonguyan is hoping to pass before the end of the year at least five important ordinances that would help the city cope with the problem of rising crude oil prices and corruption in the government.
In Sunday's "Gikan sa Masa, Para sa Masa" television program, Bonguyan said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte requested him to expedite the passing of the new tax ordinance, the anti-truancy ordinance, and the ordinance for the production of a citizen's transaction manual before the end of 2005.
"So that by next year we can implement the tax code and other ordinances that the mayor said are important," Bonguyan said.
The vice mayor said they are now meeting with the executive department on finalize some provisions in the proposed new tax ordinance so that it will have an easy sailing at the City Council later.
Bonguyan said the passing of the new tax code is important considering the looming fuel crisis. The city last increased their tax rates 30 years ago and Davao has the lowest tax rate compared to other cities in the whole country.
He said with the implementation of the new tax code, the city stands to earn from P300 to P400 million a year.
Also labeled as priority ordinance is the controversial Anti-Truancy Ordinance of Councilor Mabel Sunga-Acosta. The ordinance had been renamed as "School Child Educational and Protection Ordinance" after several cause oriented groups protested the use of the word truancy in the ordinance.
An ordinance calling for the production of a citizen's transaction manual is also being crafted so as to make the people aware of the right process in making transactions with the local government.
Bonguyan said this way corruption in the government would be minimized if not totally eradicated.
There are also ordinances, which would provide for the creation of reproductive health clinics, the gender sensitivity crisis intervention unit and the construction of bicycle lanes.
Sinjin P. August 29th, 2005, 02:38 PM wow! that would be great for Davao :)
paulkrps August 29th, 2005, 02:56 PM a big wow! i hope this project really pushes forward. it's a big push for davao!
slerz August 29th, 2005, 04:05 PM WoW! this is really excititng.... I hope it will be completed sooner for our economy.
Davao should be developed more coz it is the gateway to Indonesia, Malaysia and Brunei. I really hope our Philippine cities will grow rapidly...Thats why Federalism should be implemented as soon as possible.

 Thats fantastic!! At least Davao has a plan to build a CBD skyscraper cluster! Hopefully they can push through with that. Hope we get more details soon.
Its about time they concentrate developing other cities besides MM. This is not only good for Davao but also for the whole country as it will provide employment and distribute wealth more evenly.
How come Cebu doesnt have a masterplan like that? Or does it?
bustero August 30th, 2005, 09:18 AM They probably do , it's just hidden away somewhere.
absent-minded August 30th, 2005, 10:22 AM I went to Davao/Pearl Farm two weeks ago with my family and I haven't reallybeen able to come back to post at SSC until now. can't believe how much I've missed... haha! grabe!
anyways, here's a little trip report. mostly photos. Davao is truly awesome! very, very impressive talaga and Pearl Farm was so much fun too...
@Ryan/aaron - feel free to move this thread to one of the sub-forums if it doesn't really fit in the main one. hehe
here's a couple of pictures while we were waiting at NAIA-2 for PR813. we got a PALakbayan package for an amazing deal. the half hour jet ski rental at Pearl Farm actually cost quite a bit more than the roundtrip plane tickets to DVO!!
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/17/0019hs.jpg
the little wall that separates the North/South (Int'l/Domestic) flights and passengers. Terminal 2's architecture is actually very unique and very very nice. the super high ceiling and almost completely window curtain walls are beautiful. and that sharp little corner is so cool for me. haha! sayang lang na hindi masyadong maayos ang maintainance and some of the really cheap looking materials they used...
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/5941/0024ps.jpg
a PAL flight attendant. this was such a fluke-y shot, pero I love the way she was captured in here. parang F/A-na-F/A ang dating talaga... haha!

the long domestic departures lounge
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/4743/0043kp.jpg
here's a shot of the newly renovate PAL Mabuhay Domestic Lounge. it looks pretty weird and not very impressive to me though - but I think that it's really just because of the awkward location they put it in. only my dad was allowed in cuz he was the only Mabuhay Elite cardholder so this was the only shot I got. and only part I saw... hehe
http://img397.imageshack.us/img397/66/0052qn.jpg
back upstairs, out the window. PAL 3-in-1. hehe! two A330s and a B737.

I took this shot right after we got out of the plane. I finally got to see it for myself, actually while we were still in MNL. I'm not sure if it was the same one, but probably... the new Cebu Pacific A320-200 parked beside us at DVO

when passengers off of our flight started coming down to the baggage claim the Kadayawan performers started dancing. it was so cool! haha!

about 15 minutes later the Pearl Farm taxi brought us to the wharf at Waterfront Insular for our banca ride to Pearl Farm.
http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/5548/0116lz.jpg
when we got there, it was around 8:00 already. they were having dinner by the main pool that night. the five or six course meal was actually very affordable at I think P600 (considering the resort had a monopoly operating the only restuarant there) and was absolutely amazing! haha! easily some of the best food I've had in a long time... the presentation and everything was so nice too, but the food was so good I didn't bother taking pictures. hehe

this isn't so great, but it sorta shows you how green and lush the resort was. it was from outside our Hilltop balay...

http://img373.imageshack.us/img373/9766/0219yx.jpg
in the afternoon we went over to Malipano Island just across the main part of the resort. it was a 3 minute ride over there and they had a bunch of stuff and several nicer beaches. plus seven pretty huge suites and a private suite the owners (Floriendos?) still use. they said quite a few guests just left the day before...

snorkeling on the third day. there was a Korean family with us. anyway, it was pretty awesome! there are corals there even where the sea is really shallow. the waves got quite strong by 12:00 though, but we were mostly done by then... lucky! haha
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/1263/0272ny.jpg
me.. playing chess at the Parola Bar. haha! I think that's the first picture of me I've ever posted here. hehe =D
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/3205/0280ko.jpg
and that's it for Pearl Farm. hehehe!
on the fourth day my dad decided to check out early and head back to Davao City on the first trip out so that we could tour the city. our flight back was delayed to 7:40PM (from 6:25PM) cause PAL - I guess cause of the Kadayawan - decided to send in two A340s (at least according to the schedules that day) and have a B737 operate our flight (PR814).
anyway, umm... we visited the crocodile farm (just outside the Davao RiverFront future CBD posted in the Davao thread) first after getting back to Wateront Insular. it was actually really, really bad. I don't even know what it was. haha! nakakadiri and it was just little concrete pens that had crocodiles in them inside a small unpaved, uncovered, muddy/grassy park. the entrance fee was P15, I think, so I guess I shouldn't have expected anything. haha! pero just outside the park, there was this billboard of a new crocdile farm. it looked really, really nice! and guess what... grabe! ang sayang! haha!! the told us it was opening the next day!! I saw it from the parking lot of the old one and it looked really nice and really big. parang world-class na talaga. a far, far, far, far, far cry from the one we got to see. too bad... I hope you guys from Davao could go and get pictures! hehe has anyone been there?
then after the crocodile farm we went to Philippine Eagle center. it was nice seeing all those Philippine eagles. and there were actually a lot more than I thought there would be. kala ko isa o dalawa lang eh. haha!
after that we had lunch at the Buddha restaurant. here are a couple pictures I took in the car. nothing really special...

after lunch, we went up to Jack's Ridge and took a couple of pictures of Davao City from the top.
http://img393.imageshack.us/img393/7100/0310ew.jpg
then we went back into the city to go shopping at Aldivinco mall. it's sorta like Greenhills in Manila, but a lot smaller. it was really clean though and instead of just having little stalls, they had small airconditioned stores.
this was just outside the mall. I guess also part of the Kadayawan fiesta. hehe! right behind it in this shot is Ateneo de Davao. the building is so nice! haha!

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/444/0375jg.jpg
after about an hour shopping, we went to Blugre Cafe which was at the ground floor of the Landco Corporate Center (the glassy blue high-rise that's also been posted a couple times in the Davao thread). I tried to but I didn't get any good shots of the building... sorry. =/ hehehe!
we met up with my mom's friends there and at 6:30 I texted PAL and found out the flight would be further delayed to 9:05 PM. haha! grabe... we left at 7:30 to get to the airport.
finally, a few pictures of Davao's airport. their new airport is stunning! haha! I was so happy I finally got to step into it. haha! looks just as good as all the pictures you guys put up here! I mean, nothing out of this world like HKIA or anything, pero I would say it's actually better than NAIA's T1 and as good as or even better than T2. it's just so clean and modern and everything. and that roof just looks so nice!! haha! nakaka inggit. I wish they could transfer it over to Manila as a domestic terminal or something! hahaha!
past security at the entrance

the check-in counters. the LED signs are actually working, unlike at NAIA's terminal 2 where all of them are now covered up with wooden signs. haha! the agents told us the B737 they were sending over that night was the same one they sent to Iloilo. they had to send it back up to Manila (I'm not sure filled up or empty) to pick up PR813 pax (at the time PR814 was originally scheduled to depart DVO) before finally coming down to Davao. haha! oh well, we got P2,000 tickets and this time they let us into the lounge, so...

http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/2429/0407pu.jpg
this was from the domestic end of the second floor of the landside hall. I think the section past the escalators is where the international flights are checked in and everything. I love this terminal! hahaha!
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/1733/0427wn.jpg
this is the airside hall past the duty free shops and the second and final security screening. probably the nicest part of the airport, next to the roof of the main building! hahaha! I never knew this existed in the airport before then cuz I'd never seen it in any of the pictures here. ang ganda talaga! haha I love this little corridor. it runs the width of the terminal's airside and along the left side of this wall are Gate 5's departure lounge, Mabuhay Lounge, a VIP lounge and two or three still vacant rooms. at the end is the main departure lounge for the rest of the gates. it's actually a really unique and really cool layout/setup. haha!
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/2143/04316hm.jpg
here's the VIP Lounge. I dunno if the airport authority runs it or if it's a private thing. and I'm not sure how much it costs either... hehe
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/1862/0449kc.jpg
the main departures lounge at the end of the corridor. all PR814 pax now cuz we were definitely the last flight leaving that night... haha!
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/8793/0459zp.jpg
the DVO Mabuhay Lounge. actually also very, very nice!! I mean for a small airport like Davao, wow! much more than I expected it would be. haha! there was also a computer with free internet and a phone at the back.
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/9348/0467ft.jpg
on the other side of the window is the small outer corridor that leads passengers into the airbridges. sorta like the small corridor at NAIA T2.
http://img399.imageshack.us/img399/6066/0474kr.jpg
I forgot what time we got back to MNL but I guess everything went well from there.
oh yeah, we missed out on a lot of the nicer places at Davao. I told my dad about Eden cause bustero suggested it to me before we left. my mom's friend we met up with also told us to go there when they met us at the airport when we first arrived. and were actually supposed to go there. it's just that the tour guide told us we were going to see a bird show after the Philippine Eagle center and it was already 1:00 so my mom decided to skip it and just go back to the city center for lunch. hahaha! we didn't find out the bird show was at Malagos (which was supposedly really really nice) and that we were going to Eden too after Malagos. it was really stupid... hahahaha!! sayang talaga. haha! but oh well... and yeah, we didn't get to see the parades at this year's Kadayawan at all. :bash: hehe
well... that's it. I didn't expect it to get this long, sorry. hehe! I hope you guys enjoyed the pictures. the writing and the captions are just really badly written, so sorry about that. hahaha!
one last thing. Davao and Pearl Farm are truly awesome, awesome places to go and to see! ang ganda ganda talaga. I mean, Davao really has soooooo much to be proud about! the world's single largest city is so clean, so safe, so progressive. because of the great local government they've got in place. I only heard about how Mayor Duterte does things from the tour guide and I already love him! (he really should be president!) haha! and yeah, their tap water is the world's number two daw talaga! the people everywhere - from the resort to the Aldivinco mall - were just amazingly friendly and super nice!! grabe! so much fun! you guys in Davao should keep it up!
WOWDavao talaga! Madayaw!! (even though I'm not entirely sure what that means) hehe. if I had the chance I would go back anytime. I would maybe even live there in the future!
btw, you guys should take a look at August's Philippine Airlines Mabuhay magazine. I didn't actually get to see it till our flight back here to Vancouver four days after we got back from this trip. haha! Davao is on the front cover and is the main feature. there's quite a lot in it about the city and the mayor and everything too... I can't believe I didn't take it off the plane!! haha!
and oh yeah, i save this for last. hahaha! I drew it out on the sand at a beach on Malipano Island.

Davao really DOES look like a wonderful place to go. I had so much fun the first time I went there. I hope to go back again sometime.
mhe-ann August 30th, 2005, 11:18 AM whow! nice absent. I enjoyed the tour. thanks.
c0kelitr0 August 30th, 2005, 11:32 AM what a great travelogue!! :D
dominique August 30th, 2005, 11:33 AM cebu business park was conceptualized to have a cluster of skyscapers thus the ayalas built initially the ayala FGU center, park towers 1 and 2, marriot hotel and other private corporations such as keppel, pag-ibig, etc. the Cebu CBD lots were virtually sold out and all buyers in the mid 90's proposed to have their skyscrapers until the Asian crisis in 1997 shatteres all these plans Remember the Cebu CBD has height restrictions of buildings i think not lower than 8 storey (correct me if im wrong) until resently the ayalas lifted that restriction thus the Taft center (2 storey) was constructed and union bank will follow suit.
the eocnomic climate of the city and of course the entire country determines the succes of any real estate ventures. Though some businessmen opted to build their buildings somewhere because of the lofty prises of Cebu CBD lots averaging 50 million per parcel. Thats probably the reason why parklane preferred the area accross the cebu CBD. Well let's just keep our fingers crossed. Cebu is slowly picking up the pieces.
I wish davao will do the same. The first time i went to davao in 1997, davao was teeming with construction activites, the big 3 hotels were alsmost built simultateously (grand regal, marco polo and royal mandaya), pryze business park, etc, but interupted with the asian crisis.
Huh! i just couldnt figure out if the asian financial crisis did not happen. Cebu and davao could have been kaoshiung or busan.
I just hope davao's new masterplan will push through. From what i've read the landco and pryze buildings are having occupancy problem. is it true sleepwalker?
Well, nonetheless i just hope for the best of davao!
Dvorak August 30th, 2005, 11:39 AM wow nice.. is this true? Php7,000.00 only for 4 days / 3 nights on twin sharing? hmmm let's go to DAVAO na!
Mango August 30th, 2005, 11:50 AM Those are really nice shots! Pwedeng pang travel mag. Thanks for sharing.
rustyboi August 30th, 2005, 12:58 PM Wow na wow sa Davao! haven't been but indeed one of the best places to visit! in the future! :okay:
dudz August 30th, 2005, 03:38 PM wow lance...ang galing!!! photos and kwentos all! i like those airport terminal (naia II and davao) shots so much...especially that one at floor level...very cool! i do that a lot too! :haha: thanks a lot lance!:cheers2:
KulasKusgan August 30th, 2005, 03:59 PM nice place! i wish i could visit davao someday... :jk: hehe.
good thing, you did a bit of "island to highland" tour. one thing you miss is eden nature park. there are also cheaper ways to hop around here. like rent a pump boat (price range: P300-P2,500) for island tour and also, trek the slopes of mt apo. thanks for liking davao.
paulkrps August 30th, 2005, 04:08 PM you guys are torturing me with these pics of davao.
KulasKusgan August 30th, 2005, 04:29 PM I just hope davao's new masterplan will push through. From what i've read the landco and pryze buildings are having occupancy problem. is it true sleepwalker?
Well, nonetheless i just hope for the best of davao!
yeah, true. it is visible from outside that the bldg is half-empty. too bad...
i think it would take several years before davao tenants appreciate scrapers.
takot atang sumakay ng elevator mga dabawenyos :jk:
in the 90s after the city amended its zoning ordinance and before the asian crisis there were several other projects kasabay ng marco polo, mercure (now grand regal) and royal mandaya... like the foreclosed first oriental industrial park, the millenium city, along with davao integrated devt plan (davao MRT, davao-samal bridge, marina complex, etc.)
slerz August 30th, 2005, 04:43 PM Yup, more than 30 scrapers was planned to be built in Cebu CBD... I have read it in the newspaper long ago but I didn't believe....but it didn't materialized as the 1997 economic crisis hit Asia.
paulkrps August 30th, 2005, 05:49 PM from the looks of it, it's conceivable. only that as dominique has pointed out with landco and pryce having occupancy problems. when you have 30 or more skyscrapers in one area, surely all these will be fighting over tenants. if you have something like 2-4 percent vacancy rate, that's ok, but if you have 40-60, how would each of these survive? if you have a multi-use structure (office, retail and condominium, that can boost your occupancy rate instead just relying solely on office tenants.
bustero August 30th, 2005, 06:46 PM The structure of Landco and Pryce are obsolete, similar to the hundreds of skyscrapers in shanghai that are worthless because they are the wrong ones. When Epixtar and some BPO gus looked at Davao they commented that there are no suitable buildings there. Those buildings don't have the power, floor plate, telecom etc needed in new facilities. They look good on the outside but on the inside old design. Cybercity was supposed to end up in a smaller new building near San Pedro Church. I think more office commercial buildings will be in the offing in Davao but it will probably look like office park stuff rather than gleaming hirise towers.
Kiel August 30th, 2005, 07:03 PM Talaga naman, Lance! Talagang pinaghirapan :D This is such an informative and interesting tour ;) Thanks, really great pictures/captions.
Hopefully I can visit Davao soon, it seems like such a great city. :)

JoeyIncali August 31st, 2005, 05:39 AM Wow! Ibug ko kaayo. :-(
I miss Davao.
Thank sooo much for the pics and the travelogy.
bustero August 31st, 2005, 05:42 AM Great trip for you absent minded. Am happy you all enjoyed it. Anyway save Eden for another trip so there's a reason to come back soon! The Malagos Garden and Eagle Center are very much great places to visit anyway:) Next time you go to Ble Gre make sure you get some durian coffee!
ryanr August 31st, 2005, 07:20 AM Awesome! Beautiful pics, seems like you had a wonderful vacation:)
And Davao airport, even though its not that spectacular, im glad its quite modern and simple.
chymera00 August 31st, 2005, 09:56 AM nice journal ... cool tlga ang Davao ... the lounges in their int. airport are soo nice
simply_me August 31st, 2005, 12:18 PM so proud of davao... thanks absent-minded!!! :)
paulkrps August 31st, 2005, 04:20 PM The structure of Landco and Pryce are obsolete, similar to the hundreds of skyscrapers in shanghai that are worthless because they are the wrong ones. I think more office commercial buildings will be in the offing in Davao but it will probably look like office park stuff rather than gleaming hirise towers.
i remember reading a landco brochure touting it's state of the art facilities, that was 8 years ago. technology sure flies so fast.
bustero August 31st, 2005, 04:46 PM What makes it obsolete even for brand new buildings in makati (yes some of those grade a towers) is
1) small floorplate
2) little room to expand the electrical - an easy place to save for many owners
3) telco , broadband access - now very critical, a problem with davao from what i remember last year, the pipes are restricted to sat uplink and not optics
most people look at the shiny curtain glass, and granite lobbies (the most visible flashy features of the building), yet robinsons new cyber building along pioneer is very low key ( i don't think it even merits it's own thread here) yet it's a lot more desirable by the big boys than the above buildings.
paulkrps August 31st, 2005, 06:17 PM i think the telco part was sorely missed (pardon the pun). this time, davao has to really put emphasis that all has to be in proper place or else the davao will be in last in the investments arena.
marites4 August 31st, 2005, 08:39 PM Davao looks so nice and clean indeed. They should model all Phil cities after Davao. I would like to move there also but the drawback is it seems so far.
Mers August 31st, 2005, 08:56 PM Such a neat idea of posting your pics about your travel in Davao.. Go Davao..Soar High..hehe
Asia74 August 31st, 2005, 10:26 PM I'm very excited to going home next year. Davao International Airport pictures are awesome. I
tigidig14 August 31st, 2005, 11:27 PM no offense but this forum should go to samahan
renell September 1st, 2005, 08:02 AM aaah sweet stuff a-m. yes that's 5 stars I reckon;) I might not be the biggest nature photography enthusiast, those airport shots are gold
Sinjin P. September 1st, 2005, 12:15 PM cebu business park was conceptualized to have a cluster of skyscapers thus the ayalas built initially the ayala FGU center, park towers 1 and 2, marriot hotel and other private corporations such as keppel, pag-ibig, etc. the Cebu CBD lots were virtually sold out and all buyers in the mid 90's proposed to have their skyscrapers until the Asian crisis in 1997 shatteres all these plans Remember the Cebu CBD has height restrictions of buildings i think not lower than 8 storey (correct me if im wrong) until resently the ayalas lifted that restriction thus the Taft center (2 storey) was constructed and union bank will follow suit.
the eocnomic climate of the city and of course the entire country determines the succes of any real estate ventures.
Actually, the Union Bank Building is already operational. Yes, CBP lot owners are already showing some action since I always see "soon to rise" streamers but I just can't clearly read the inscriptions within :)
GO DAVAO! Ihatag namo ang among kinatibuok nga suporta para sa paglambo sa Davao! HEHE! :applause:

Architects tapped for Davao Chinatown plan
by RG Alama
Davao City (2 June) -- The Davao Chinatown Development Council has tapped the expertise of architects to design the lay-out of the Davao City Chinatown District this according to Davao City Vice-Mayor Luis Bonguyan.
"During the recent meeting of the technical working group of the Chinatown District the architects presented their plans to us." The Vice Mayor said. Who also serves as the Chairman of the Davao Chinatown Development Council tasked to oversee the creation of the Chinatown District.
"So we are not just limiting ourselves in putting just Chinese arches in the area we want the architects to design the physical aspect of the Chinatown," Said the Vice -Mayor.
The Vice-Mayor also bared that that the Chinatown Council is enlisting Marco Polo Davao Hotel Manager Stanley Lau as a consultant to the council. Lau a native of Hongkong will advise the council on the former crown colony's experience in the establishment and operation of successful flea markets.
"Hongkong is famous for its flea markets, these flea markets are essential to the Chinatown District since it will draw in the crowds, we wanted to make Davao Chinatown a lively district," Said local businessman Sebastian Angliongto, himself the vice-chairman of the Chinatown Development Council.
Angliongto said that an architectural plan is being formulated by the council with the help of the architects the lay-out includes plans for buildings, roads, flea markets, store design, parks and plazas and other structures in the Chinatown District. "We will institutionalize the plan," Angliongto added.
Bonguyan and Angliongto said that plans and concepts when finished will be shown to the media and to the people concerned probably as early as next month.
Davao City is the second Local Government Unit in the Philippines to create the Chinatown district after the Binondo Chinatown in Manila. The District covers the predominantly Chinese-populated neighborhood situated along the busy thoroughfares of Uyanguren, Monteverde and Santa Ana including its bustling side streets. (PIA)

Malaysian envoy vows more investments for Mindanao
By Aurea A. Gerundio
MALAYSIAN Ambassador to the Philippines Iskandor Sarudin promised Friday to encourage investors in his country to invest in Mindanao, particularly in agriculture and eco-tourism sectors.
In a meeting with the Mindanao Business Council (MBC), where the council presented various business opportunities in Mindanao, Sarudin committed to do his best to extend cooperation with Mindanao business sector.
"Whatever activities planned, we will do it together," Sarudin said, adding that he has been visiting Mindanao particularly the cities of Cotabato, Marawi, Iligan, and Zamboanga.
Friday's visit was his first in Davao City. Sarudin remains optimistic that many investors would still be willing to invest here amid the political crisis besetting the country.
"We will encourage and motivate member countries in the BIMP-Eaga to invest here," Sarudin said.
Later in the afternoon, Sarudin and seven other Malaysian members of the delegation visited the City Hall for a courtesy call with Vice Mayor Luis C. Bonguyan.

i agree. theres no big ticket projects since the completion of airport & buhangin underpass. but smaller projects like replacement of street signs, new vehicles for traffic officers (toyota hilux with megaphone-madalas sigawan yong mga traffic offenders), renovation of quezon park & its fountain infront of city hall, & maintenance of cleanliness & peace & order.

KulasKusgan September 4th, 2005, 06:40 AM Davao trade expo to go global
Ma. Olivia Mendez/MindaNews
DAVAO CITY -- This year’s Davao Trade Expo (DATE) is going global, the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (DCCCII) announced Saturday.
“Our goal is to foster business partnerships, create strategic synergies that will together, build global competitiveness,” Bienvenido Cariaga, DCCIII President and Simeon Marfori, DCCCII Executive Vice President and DATE 2005 chair, said in a message.
DATE 2005 is the seventh of the annual trade exhibit and will be held at the NCCC Mall on October 7 to 9. According to Cariaga and Marfori, DATE is “the premiere trade exhibit in Mindanao” with P36 million worth of businesses generated in 2003, followed by P55 million in 2004.
Aside from participating exhibitors from Luzon and the Visayas, DCCCII is also expecting exhibitors from the other member-countries of the Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA); Japan, Australia and the United States, Cariaga and Marfori said.
The annual trade exhibit will feature product presentations, business matching sessions, workshops, trainings and livelihood seminars to enhance and develop the small and medium enterprises in the city.
KulasKusgan September 4th, 2005, 06:41 AM U.S. Pavilion at Davao Trade Expo
We are pleased to invite U.S. companies to join the U.S. Commercial Service in the U.S. PAVILION 2OO5 at the DAVAO TRADE EXPO (DATE), the biggest trade event in Davao and Mindanao showcasing U.S. products and services. The U.S. Pavilion will be the centerpiece of the Davao Trade Expo (DATE), to be held October 14-16, 2005 at the NCCC Mall, the newest one-stop shopping center and premiere trade center in the Southern Philippines. Over 3,000 of Mindanao’s most successful business people are expected to attend this high-energy event.
Contrary to public perception, Mindanao continues to exhibit outstanding economic growth. In fact, Mindanao registered $383 million in export earnings in the first quarter of 2005 up 13% over the same period in 2004, according to the Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO).
Mindanao also attracted 15 new investment projects last year. But key opportunities still exist in Mindanao to expand the production base, such as improving production processes, expanding agriculture production and food processing, and building the business process outsourcing infrastructure. Your participation in the U.S. Pavilion will help you tap into these and other business expansion opportunities.
The U.S. Pavilion will be part of a 3-day American product promotion extravaganza featuring product demonstrations of exhibiting U.S. companies, and matchmaking activities with Davao and Mindanao business contacts. Promotion for this event will be extensive.
Participation fee is US$750 for a shell-scheme exhibit booth and is on a first-come-first-served basis.
