The week-long Mindanao Film Festival ’08 begins today with 25 films—22 short and three full-length entries—at the Gaisano Mall of Davao. This is the sixth year that the mall has played host to upcoming Mindanaoan filmmakers.After the successful launch last night with the opening of Ang Concerto by Davaoeno director Paul Morales, island-made indies, or independent films will take the highlight.
The awarding night is on Dec. 21 at The Venue.

The entries are:

Guerilla Filmmaking Competition Category:

“Anino” - the last remaining scion of a feared clan of witches tries to escape her family’s heirloom which is its greatest curse. Short film shot and produced in Tagum City.
“Bombdrop” - mistaken identity, religious and cultural stereotypes is the essence in this comedic tale of terrorist paranoia set in Tagum City.
“Camera” - two lovers must hurdle the barriers of contrasting religions or face the pain of losing each other.
“Egay” - a simple, rustic agrarian life masks a farm girl’s torment.
“Langyaw” - a short film which tackles the enigma of a filmmaker as an artist.
“Tundong” - the short explains the significance of the Tundong or veil worn by Muslim women and its relevance in these modern times.
“Mujahid”- a young Muslim lady ultimately tries to confront the wrong brought to her people.
“Ang Press Release sa Dalaga na si Adelfa” - through the media, Adelfa shows to the world the abuse and hurt she suffers from her dysfunctional family.
“Anod” - a metaphorical tale of a wayward daughter and her waiting mother.
“Faith Hope” – a young woman decides to enter the monastery and become a nun against the wishes of his pragmatic elder brother who is the family’s breadwinner.
“Takipsilim”- a searching mother and an innocent orphan and the circumstances that will bring them together..

Student Film Competition

“A Deadly Silence” - a Japanese-inspired horror flick about two murderous siblings.
“Bato” - a man tries to fix his life and his family after battling the demons of drug abuse.
“Eklipse” - a love story set amidst a mythical battle between the opposing forces of good and evil.
“Kiss the Rain” - painful memories brought about by rain is washed away by love in this romantic flick made by young filmmakers from Iligan City.
“Orde” - a foreign short film entry from Jakarta about an Indonesian driver, his broken car and an overbearing Caucasian passenger, Orde, symbolically depicts neocolonialism in a struggling nation.
“Panagsaad sa mga Panganod” (promises to the clouds) – a poetic narrative about a young couple and their eternal promise to each other despite the hardships they encounter.

Other entries:

“Ang Tatlong Mukha ng Buhay- a trilogy of short films produced by Ateneo de Davao High School. It includes the short Panalangin a mushy puppy love tale set in Ateneo de Davao high. A bittersweet homecoming in Pagbabalik and the humor-flavored take on the history of one’s name in “Ang mga kabanata sa buhay ni Abelardo Macaspac III.”
“City of Samaritan” - a modern day retelling of the Parable of the Good Samaritan set in Cagayan de Oro City.
“Latus” - a short film that tackles the cycle of violence in the slum community and how it drastically transforms each character’s lives.

Exhibition films

“Angan-Angan” (dreams)- 2007 Cinemalaya finalist in the short film competition and Special Jury Citation Winner, Angan-Angan is the story about a young Yakan girl and her quest for education.
“Concerto (Davao War Diary)” - full-length film about a piano concert held in the woods of Davao during World War 2.
“Thank You Girls” - a bevy of Dabawenyo Miss Gay pageant veterans takes on a rollicking road trip to Cagayan de Oro City. (Full-length feature)
“Hunghong sa Yuta” (Whispers of the earth) - Vigo, a mysterious teacher from the city arrives in the village of Hinyok to teach literacy to the village children, unbeknownst to them a brutal war is brewing, one that could change their lives forever. (Full-length feature)

The festival will also feature short films from the NCCA (National Commission on the Culture and the Arts).
The film convention with the theme Crafting a truly Mindanao Cinema will be held at the Ateneo de Davao Jacinto Campus.

City Hall will most likely get itself of a P3 billion loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines to undertake various infrastructure projects.

If it pushes through, the loan will be payable within 15 years.

The City Council had earlier approved a resolution authorizing Mayor Duterte to negotiate for the loan agreement with the LBP, which earlier invited City Hall to avail of an omnibus loan.

Duterte said he would consult his constituents because it would be taxpayers’ money that will ultimately pay for the loan.

The package will include P350 million for a sanitary landfill project, P100 million for urban land reform, and an unspecified amount earmarked for the installation of surveillance cameras in all traffic intersections.

Duterte said the bank sent its invitation based on its assessment of the city’s capacity to pay. This was corroborated by City Administrator WEndel Avisado, City Accountant Rizalina Justol and City Budget Officer Yolanda Tablizo.

“Wala ta’y paltos sa pagbayad sa utang sa ila,” he said.

The mayor added that if the loan is approved and the projects push through, all biddings will be conducted in full transparency so that taxpayers will know where their money goes. Editha Z. Caduaya

yup 2 landfills. yung isa yan ginagammit natin sa Carmen and by the end of this year completo na ang facility another purpose for putting another landfill aside for a cleaner Davao are travel time and expenses kasi magastos mag tambak ng basura lalo na sa north part going to Carmen.

Samadhi pays tribute to ’70 folk singers

IN A fitting tribute to the music icons from yesteryears, the 1st Samadhi Music Festival will journey back to the roots of Davao folksingings.


The local music icons of the 70s will be jamming their original and cover song in the festival which will be staged 9pm today at the Taboan of Matina Town Square in Matina, Davao City.
Performing are Popong Landero, Jimmy Cabrera, Noli Bencio, Ikoy San Pedro, Noli Vidal, Rey “Taling” Delgado, Hour Glass (Bob, Ontol, Carding), Lito Arlan, Eugene Villarino, Roger Barrizo, Manny Pacaldo, Sandra Carpio, Ginging Alonday, Bing Dianasas, Pol Lacaba, Randy Avila and Bencio’s Positive Madness (Emil, Pepot, Dodong).
“All the performers are the biggest names in folk singing in Davao wayback in the 70s,” said Carpio, the secretary of Samadhi.
“If you’re a baby boomers who frequented night bars in the 70s, you will surely know these musicians.”
The artists were popular in Davao folk houses like Sawali at the corner of Rizal and Anda streets, Don Quijote in Aldeveinco Arcade and Horizon along Bonifacio street.
Carpio said the show will re-enact the start of the folksinging in Davao up to its heydays.
Folk-rock music which originated in America in mid-60s was a hit in Davao almost a decade later.
Expect the performers to sing old time favorites from Asin, Simon and Garfunkel, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, John Denver, Paul Williams, James Taylor, Seals & Crofts, Cat Stevens, Don McLean, and Crosby, Stills & Nash & Young.
The festival also aims to revive the Pinoy Rock and Rhythm, the 70s popular radio show of the pre-politician Leonardo “Happy L.A.” Avila III over dxUM which features locally produced folk-rock songs.
Carpio said they are hoping to have the show back, still with Happy L.A. who is still doing radio works with Hit Radio, the only station in Davao which specializes in popular songs from yesteryears.
“Happy L.A. is very positive with the idea,” Carpio told Times. But Carpio admitted that there is a difficulty since most of the original and songs covered by the local music heroes were not preserved.
Pinoy Rock and Rhythm started when Happy L.A., using a cassette tape, recorded a live performance of Landero’s Kaliweteng Guitarista in Sawali. It was played on his radio show and gave birth to the very first program that promoted the works of Davao musicians.
During the Samadhi music festival, Carpio said, the event will be re-enacted.
In his message, Happy L.A. said he is in full support of Samadhi’s effort in promoting the local arts and culture.
“I hope this concert created more opportunities in the future to showcase Davao City’s local talents and deepen every Davaoeño’s (young and old) appreciation of its musical heritage,” said Happy L.A., now a city councilor.
L.A. said “there is no better way to reconnect and rediscover our past, no faster way to recall our poignant youths and our unsullied dreams than to hear the music of our early years.”
Carpio said Samadhi, in association with the city government of Davao, is planning the December festival to become an annual event to attract tourists.
“Hopefully in the future, the festival will run for days,” Carpio said.
The Samadhi 1st Music Festival is supported by MTS, Tunalicious, Davao Cavaliers, Kahirup Printers, Shem Longakit, APM, Apo Natural Spring Waters, Efren Lu, 100.3 Hit Radio, and Mindanao Times.
Samadhi, or the Samahan ng mga Musikeros sa Davao, is Davao’s biggest group of musicians with more than 300 musicians as members. It was formed in two years ago with the aim of professionalize the local music industry.

(DACMEN) at their induction Saturday night that more than P6 billion are being prepared by the local government for next year. Describing it as the “Mayor Duterte stimulus plan,” the first district councilor said this would include the P3.2 billion annual budget and another P3 billion in infrastructure spending to be funded by a new loan from the Landbank of the Philippines.

He said the increased public spending next year is aimed at continuing the development momentum of the city while the adverse effects of the global economic crisis will start to set in. Laviña said the main concerns of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte are the generation of jobs, delivery of vital social services and maintenance of peace and order. He said the City Council is fully behind the initiative of the mayor even as he called on the private sector to join hands with the local government in collectively tackling the expected economic slowdown next year.

He said that due to the tight financial situation abroad, there would be fewer investments, less exports, less tourism traffic and fewer remittances from overseas Filipino workers. However, he said the city has good economic fundamentals and would weather the global economic crisis. Lydio Sullano of the Davao Medical School Foundation Cooperative leads the new officers of DACMEN. Founded in 1966, DACMEN has over 100 members from financial, lending and credit firms, appliance stores and cooperatives in the city.

seriously, imo, half of the growth will be driven by domestic borrowing. the regular annual budget i dont think can cope with recession. especially if gdp is taking its toll.(interdependence of industrial sectors, employments drop, drop in consumer demand, export, etc... scary!)

It is bugging because I have my Condo Unit in the 2nd bldg of the 1 Oasis Dav( Ask FLI and my agent). And as I believe, it's not bad to live in this city. With all the legal means, I am now a part of Davao City-my next city after San Fernando City in Luzon. My heart belongs here with my fiance in DC.

Davao Racing Team sets RP fastest record

Davao City’s team W-Autosports Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg known as “Killa” claimed the fastest drag racing car in the Philippines record during the Automobile Association of the Philippines (AAP) race at the Clark Raceway in Angeles city with a 9.569 seconds Elapsed Time (ET).


Driven by veteran driver Vanni Garcia, the record run was set during the qualifying sessions. It was backed up with another 9.676 seconds run which broke the previous record set by Jonathan Tiu in his Mitsubishi EVO5 at 9.8 seconds set at the BRC race track in Rosario, Batangas early this year.
The green Mitsubishi Mirage Cyborg is one of the mainstays of Team W-Autosports owned by Mindanao Times publisher Willie Torres and managed by his brother Edwin. The team has a 10-second record-setting Mitsubishi EVO4, a 1969 big-block Chevy Camaro capable in running in the 10s and a red Honda Civic EG known as “Honey” which was a consistent winner in the Pro bracket racing. It has tied-up with Vannitec racing forming a solid racing team.
Powered by a 4G63 2.0 liter with a Garret G turbocharger dynoed at 677whp, “Killa” burned the Angels race track with a blistering 1.530 60-ft time, 148.30 MPH trap speed achieving an elapsed time of 9.569 seconds on 1,320 ft race track. The feat took drag racing afficianados by surprise for the unexpected achievement of a Davao City Racing team.
“We prepared the car for almost a yea. We reinforced the body and removed excess weight to make it competitive. We had our shares of mechanical breakdowns during previous races but it didn’t deter us from preparing a 9-second car. We are very happy with the results,” said Torres.
W-Autosports were mainstays during the drag racing days at the Speed city in Ma-a from 2003 to 06. It won numerous races and has moved to Metro Manila to compete in the races their due to the closure of the Speed City race track. It was closed when the St. Paul College building was constructed together with the St. Lucia clubhouse.
With its record-setting run, W-Autosports win has brought Davao City back into the limelight in motorsport racing with this feat.

THE THEME of the night was “giving,” and the Himig singers delivered more than just that.
On the evening of Dec. 12, the Himig singers sang to a fully-packed grand ballroom of the Apo View Hotel in a dinner-benefit concert which started by 9 pm.


The concert’s beneficiary was the Shepherd’s Voice for the Hearing Impaired, whose members performed a sign-language prayer at the start of the concert.
The event, dubbed “The Gift of Christmas Unwrapped by the Himig Singers,” also featured performances from world renowned singers Songspell, as well as a reunion performance of the Himig Alumni.
Himig conductor Bong Aviola, in an interview with the Times, said he was surprised at the audience in attendance.
“Akala naming mga 300 lang ang a-attend,” he said.
Aviola said the concert took more than three months to prepare, as soon as the choristers arrived in Davao City from a world tour.
“We’re taking things a step at a time,” he said, explaining that there wasn’t yet something in their to-do list after the Christmas concert.
The choral group which has been the city’s official ambassador of goodwill also showed photographs of its rosters in the 20 years of its existence.
The gift of Christ 2000 years ago was the overall theme of the concert, described in spiels during the performance.
Himig has been singing for 20 years and has gained recognition from here and abroad. The latest honors, they said, were a gold medal in the First Asian Choir Games in Indonesia and a silver medal in the World Choir Games in Austria.

MAYOR Rodrigo Duterte said the P3 billion loan offer of a government bank is tempting, but said it will be the people who will decide whether to avail it or not to avoid malice.

Duterte said he wanted to avoid suspicions that he will use the loan to fund his bid in the 2010 elections.

He said the Davao City Council had already authorized him to sign the omnibus term loan facility offered by Land Bank of the Philippines, but added he is still thinking it over.

The proposed loan is payable in 15 years, he said.

Duterte also said that aside from suspicions of corruption, he is also worried that the projects, where the loan money will be spent, will be possibly finished after his term.

The chief executive is planning to fund the following projects with the P3 billion loan:

1. P600 million for traffic improvement like installation of more sensors and closed-circuit television cameras in the streets
2. P35 million for the completion of the sanitary landfill
3. P100 million for urban land reform
4. P25 million for cemetery and columbarium

Duterte said these are just some of the projects where he intends to put the money to be loaned from the bank.

Should the loan pushes through, Duterte vowed to make the bidding process transparent "so people could check where the money goes". (BOT)

The city council approved yesterday the preliminary approval and location clearance of Ocean Cove, a low-density subdivision project of Filinvest, to be developed in Bago Aplaya, Talomo District.

The developers initially applied to reclassify the 18-hectare property into a medium-density residential zone from a protected low-density, according to Councilor Arnulfo Ricardo Cabling, chair of the committee on housing.
The request was disapproved in both 14th and 15th council, the committee report said.

The new request, however, requested only 193,271 square meters at around 20 houses per hectare. The PALC was approved on 2nd reading.

Brunei gov’t telephone company to invest in Mindanao

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 16 — A government-owned telephone company in Brunei Darussalam is eyeing to invest in the telecommunications industry in Mindanao.

Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCo) chair Undersecretary Virgilio Leyretana said representatives from the Telekom Brunei Berhad (TelBru), recently met with Davao City’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) players and visited two of the city’s Information Technology (IT) parks, the Damosa Gateway and The Venue Compound.

Leyretana said TelBru board chair and delegation head Dato Paduka Hj Othman expressed the company’s interest in exploring possible partnerships with the Information Technology-Business Process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) sector in Mindanao.

“We are here to see first-hand the IT parks in Davao City,” Othman said.

On the other hand, TelBru board member and deputy permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister’s office Mahmud Mohd Daud, said Brunei is more attracted to the emerging ICT development in Mindanao since many of the country’s BPO companies are concentrated in Manila.

Leyretana said there has been significant improvement in access to telecommunication services in Mindanao since 1994.

As of December, last year, there are already 749,217 installed fixed telephone lines in Mindanao and 33 percent of which are subscribed which translates to a total of 247,344 fixed telephone subscribers across the island-region.

Likewise, there are Public Calling Offices (PCOs) available in several municipalities, he said.

As of 2007, there are at least 23 interconnection agreements in Mindanao, which have helped connect all exchange carriers in Mindanao in support to the telecommunications industry, the MEDCo chair said.

Leyretana said he welcomes Brunei’s interest to Mindanao’s ICT industry, saying the development will strengthen the country and Brunei’s economic ties. (PNA)

Yes, it is a pain for me to hear about badmouthing this city by some jealous guys. So stop it. Don't ruin the bright ideas of the people behind this dev't.

It is bugging because I have my Condo Unit in the 2nd bldg of the 1 Oasis Dav( Ask FLI and my agent). And as I believe, it's not bad to live in this city. With all the legal means, I am now a part of Davao City-my next city after San Fernando City in Luzon. My heart belongs here with my fiance in DC.

The Davao Eye Center is the first Laser Center in Mindanao, established in 1991. The Center was created as a response to the region’s growing need for highly accessible and cost-effective eye care. At Davao Eye Center, patients are assured that highly-trained and qualified Ophthalmologists treat patients, assisted by competent and caring nurses.

The Center provides a complete of eye diagnostic procedures and corresponding treatments. Its equipment arsenal, at par with international eye laser center includes: Yag Laser for non-invasive eye surgeries; the Argon Laser to stop progression of blindness of patients with diabetes, arterial or vein occlusion and glaucoma. The Iridex Occulite SLX Solid State Laser with Tri-Mode prevents blindness borne from eye diseases associated with age-related macular degeneration. The Iridex Occlite prevents glaucoma in patients with increased eye pressure, and eye diseases related to diabetes and Systematic Lupus Erythematosus. It is the first only unit in Mindanao.

Fluorescein Angiography, a major diagnostic procedure, is used for patients with diabetes and disease of the retina. The procedure involves the injection of a fluorescein dye allowing the Ophthalmologist to take an enhanced photograph of the patient’s fundus. The Octopus 101 Perimeter does visual field studies for glaucoma patients to check central and peripheral visions.

The Glorious Saga the Old Japanese Houses Preserve

Due to the world demand for hemp and abaca in 1914 to 1920 Davao City saw the unprecedented influx of Japanese workers and investors in the vicinity. This gave rise to what we now call Old Japanese Houses in the city once known as “Little Tokyo.”

Japanese migrants were dramatically growing in number and being aggressive in the area business-wise. Profiting much from the abaca boom, they soon erected posh Japanese dwellings made of precious wood which are now popularly (referred to as) the Old Japanese Houses.

Most Japanese migrants settled in the areas of Tugbok and Toril in Davao City. In Mintal, Tugbok many abaca warehouses and processing plants were erected before World War II erupted. But the Japanese mostly chose Toril District for their residences, specifically in Daliao Town. At first the dwellings were simple one-room affairs built of ordinary and cheap materials. The abaca boom changed all that.

Soon, as their profits soared, the Japanese started building posh dwellings we now call the Old Japanese Houses. They also began sending for their families to settle in Davao permanently. Today, we see the Old Japanese Houses with Seikei Yoma and Kuichigai Yoma—dwelling room extensions segregating family from guests.

Some of the Old Japanese Houses are Furukawan in style—bunkhouses where Japanese laborers settled. Actually, Okinawans were mostly the farmers and laborers or jieisha, and the Japanese were mostly the investors. Hence, Okinawans were likely the residents of the Furukawan Old Japanese Houses we see today.

The technique of Takumi in Hida has been thoroughly carried down to the present day. Taking a walk around this old town, you can see the restful houses of Furukawa built by the modern “Takumi” who possesses the traditional techniques of carpenters of Furukawa.

Dalia in Toril District and Mintal in Tugbok District are adjoining and some 10 to 12 kilometers away from the city proper, or some 20 to 30 minutes away via car. Davao City has various scenic spots commemorating the presence of Japanese settlers in the land and also the fierce battle between the Japanese army and the allied forces (RP and US forces).

Abaca industry, as introduced by the Japanese, became a major agricultural product in Davao. This can be gleaned from the tools and implements used by the Japanese jieisha displayed in the Japanese Museum also in the city. The Old Japanese Houses are only part of the considerable Japanese influence in the city. There are also shrines, a Buddhist Temple, memorials, a Japanese tunnel, among others.

Today, spearheaded by the Tourism department, local and foreign tourists, especially Japanese, regularly visit these places—especially the Old Japanese Houses—to pay respect and reminisce a glorious past. And it’s amusing to think that Davao City used to be the Little Tokyo this side of Asia.

Recession, what recession?

ONCE upon a time, Christmas shopping was the most awaited event of the year. With children able to get all the toys that they want, while the ladies bought jewelries and wardrobe for themselves, and big brother getting his first car or what not as dad purchases a new set of golf clubs. And it was Christmas happily ever after, or so the fairy tale goes.

But snap back to 2008 and we see no happy ending in sight, to some, this year has been nothing short of apocalyptic. Talk about the plunging stock markets worldwide or as some currencies plummet to all time lows.

Then again, you realize that you are in the Philippines where Christmas is the most anticipated event throughout the year. The moment that September falls, Christmas songs are played in the airwaves, and everyone starts counting the days, even if Christmas is not even a stone's throw away.

When its December traffic always seems to be heavier, queues in the supermarket and department stores are always longer, and everything seems to run out of stock -- be it your favorite designer shoes that you have been bugging daddy to buy or the cream cheese in the supermarkets, that's how you know its Christmas in the Philippines.

Recession has been in the news the past few weeks, and it has been hogging the limelight like never before, but is there really recession in this frenzy of shoppers during the holidays?

SM City Davao and NCCC Mall have both seen a steady flow of shoppers since the start of December; Students, young professionals, mothers, businessmen, and just about anybody buying gifts for their loved ones or food and wine in preparation for the upcoming Christmas.

On a weekday, inside one of the malls, all checkout counters was full of people, queuing for their gift items and it's not due to a shortage of checkout counters as all were open that night. Now, what recession are we talking about again?

John Gan, Brand Manager of SM City Davao, said that Christmas is the time of the year that people do not only look forward to, but also prepare for. Christmas after all, is the biggest fiesta in the country.

While Aileen Gajo of NCCC Mall of Davao couldn't agree more, saying that the yuletide season is the peak season for all their stores.

Of Gadgets and Trinkets

A quick tour around the three floors of NCCC Mall, with its 20 feet high Christmas tree towering over the atrium, showed me that there is so much to buy in this mall without hurting the pockets. And mind you, you are in for a surprise at what you may get.

First on my list was this video camera pen, which livens up the sleuth in all of us. It's actually a pen with a mini video cam installed within, even the tiny bit of dot where the camera peeps through is strategically located that it is very convenient for you to use in sleuthing. Erring boyfriends and girlfriends, beware. (2nd floor, Hardware Maxxx)

Second is the fabulous girly stuff for every kikay niece that we have, ranging from the preppy headbands, courtesy of Blair Waldorf fame or Charice Pempengco, to the colorful plastic bangles, with prices from P30 to P150. (3rd floor, NCCC Department Store)

And third, are the grocery gift baskets at the NCCC Supermarket. Even with all the food that there is during the holidays, who can ever resist a basket full of goodies? And it's not limited to the usual Noche Buena ingredients that we used to receive; it now ranges from all chocolate items, to all imported goods, and even stuff for the health conscious. Retail Therapy

With choral singers rendering heartwarming Christmas carols throughout SM City Davao, a tour of what this mall has to offer had me rechecking my Christmas wish list. And I mean the list, which shows what I want for Christmas.

First on the list are the outrageously colorful clothes and fabulous finds at the newly opened People are People store. From drop dead gorgeous dresses to the funky and chic urban wear, it's all in this store. So, ninongs and ninangs, you now know where to go. (2nd Floor, People are People)

Second are the books at the newly opened National Bookstore mezzanine. It makes shopping for books so much fun, after all it's a whole new level of books and so much more. The 'Twilight' series are currently out of stock, I checked yesterday. (Ground Floor, National Bookstore)

Third on my list are the latest bags available at Travel Club and inside the SM Department Store. The Hedgren Urban Bags or the luxurious travel gear of Samsonite will definitely bring a smile to the discriminating taste of your fashionable loved ones. (Ground Floor, Travel Club) Christmas Movies

On Christmas Day, just as what has been the tradition of the cinemas of the two malls, all their cinemas will be showing Filipino made films that are part of the annual Metro Manila Film Festival.

SM City Davao will be showing Baler, One Night Only, Shake, Rattle, & Roll X, Desperadas, Ang Tanging Ina Niyong Lahat, and the Filipino animated film, Dayo.

Later on, SM will also be showing Iskul Bukol, which showcases the comedic trio of Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, and Joey de Leon, and the biopic Magkaibigan.

Shopping Time

With barely a week before Christmas Day itself, the two malls have been extending their operating hours just to accommodate shoppers who are in a rush to buy their gifts.

NCCC Mall of Davao will be extending its mall hours on December 19 to 21 and 28 to 30 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.

While on December 24 and 31, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve respectively, the mall will be open only from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. only.

On December 25, Christmas Day, and January 1, New Year's Day, NCCC Mall will be open from noon until 9 p.m.

SM City Davao is also extending its mall hours on December 21 to 23, and 25 to 30 with the mall being open from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The mall will also be open until midnight on December 20.

As for Christmas Eve, December 24, and New Year's Eve, December 31, the SM City Davao will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. only.

On January 1, SM City Davao will be open at noon until 9 p.m.

Both malls will have regular operating hours starting January 2.

It's Christmas!

True, recession may be up in our shores and is just waiting to rock us as 2008 sets over the horizon and 2009 breaks a new dawn. But Christmas, no matter what happens, will always be Christmas.

In true Filipino fashion, nothing could dampen the yuletide season -- not terrorist attacks, not a corrupt government, and definitely not an economic recession.

It is the time wherein we share the little of what we have. It is the time of the year when good old friends see each other again, or when families reunite again after a year of being separated by work. Even as some are not separated by the distance, Christmas is their only time in the year, for family gatherings, reunions, or even simply hanging out with family and friends that cannot be disturbed by calls from work or emails from bosses.

Filipinos are said to be spending too much for the holidays, who cares? We work the whole year round in order to savor every piece of hard work that we had in the sheer joy of seeing our family and friends' faces light up with glee as they rip open the presents that we have prepared for them.

Christmas is priceless, for everything else, there's the plastic card.

uu, pero sana maayos na ito soon..remember although parang di tayo masyado affected sa davao, a slowdown in the global economy would still affect our city one way or another and we are not totally immune (i.e. by next year the property market would probably be less bullish if those overseas based prospective buyers would put their planned purchases on hold or say ang BPO industry natin pwede rin matamaan pag patuloy na tumamlay ang economy ng US)

same goes for foreign investment, if mahina ang MNCs then possibleng i put on hold ang expanion nito. the longer this crisis will last the bigger the chance na ma apektuhan ang progress ng davao :(

DAVAO CITY, Philippines — A small food processor in this city will start trial shipment of its microwaveable chicharon (fried pork skin) to Dubai next month, and is targeting Filipino stores based there.
Porky Best Products, which obtained a certification from the Bureau of Food and Drugs (BFAD) in August, will initially ship about 30 cartons containing four packs of chicharon.

A Filipino consolidator in Dubai will shoulder the cost of freight and quarantine requirements, owner Alicia F. del Mundo said.

She said the products would be sold to Filipino stores targeting migrant workers in Dubai.

The pellets have a longer shelf life — up to a year — compared with regular chicharon products that last for only a month.

"The chicharon is ready to eat, you just put it in our food grade bag and into the microwave for one to two minutes," Ms. del Mundo said.

Porky Best Products has been an awardee of the Department of Trade and Industry and the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry under the small and medium enterprise category.

Ms. del Mundo said a businessman in Australia had brought samples after being introduced to the company’s products during an international food exposition in May.

A few days later, the businessman called up to order more chicharon after its restaurant was deluged with inquiries from customers.

But Ms. del Mundo said Australia is a very difficult market with all its quarantine requirements, unlike Dubai which asked only for a certification from the BFAD.

"When it comes to food, there’s no economic crisis. Chicharon is very versatile. You can mix it with noodles, pinakbet, or as a viand," she said.

The company can produce a ton of raw materials, it is looking at expanding by buying modern equipment and transferring its processing facility to a bigger location.

It churns out 300 kilos of finished products daily, which it supplies to supermarkets in this city.

Porky Best has applied for a P15-million loan from the Department of Agriculture’s Agricultural Competitiveness Enhancement Fund for its proposed processing plant.

Zest Air mounts local flights from Clark in time for the holidays

MANILA, Philippines - Zest Air, the carrier formerly known as Asian Spirit, will expand its services to Northern and Central Luzon as it starts flying from the Diosdado Macapagal International Airport (DMIA) on December 20.

Zest Air will start flying from Clark to Cebu and Davao on Saturday before embarking on regional flights in January.

“Clark will be the premier international airport that is why we decided to mount flights from the DMIA. We see a lot of potential for the airport and this is a welcome development for the airline industry in the country," Zest Air president and chief executive Alfredo Yao said in a statement.

Four Zest Air planes are now waiting at the Asian Aerospace Hangar for their first commercial flight out of DMIA. One of the planes is an Airbus A320 which can accommodate 162 passengers, and the rest are M-60 units which can carry 56 passengers.

Zest Air will explore regional destinations when two more Airbus A320 units arrive next year.

Yao earlier said Zest Air wants to fly to Bangkok in Thailand; Hong Kong, Macau, Xiamen and Shanghai in China; and Incheon in South Korea. - GMANews.TV

couldn't agree more..

i work for an MNC/MCG and we are not spared from it. sa Philippine offices namin - Makati, Cebu and Davao we are managing our costs kasi affected ang aming head offices in Europe as well as our offices across the US.

Council okays reclassification of part of Binugao for bottling plant

The City Council has approved on third and final reading the application of SMI Development Corporation to convert a portion of barangay Binugao in Toril from protected light industrial zone to heavy industrial zone, paving the way for the firm to put up a bottling plant in the area.

Meeting in a special session last Monday, the Council, however, approved the conversion of only 12,649 square meters of SMI’s six-hectare property.

In an interview yesterday, City Council floor leader Danilo Dayanghirang said the Council approved the application because the project would generate jobs for the people of Davao.

SMI plans to build an RC Cola Bottling plant in its property in Binugao.

Dayanghirang said the Council wanted to move fast and make a good business environment for the business sector because next year it is expected that many overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) would come home due to the global financial crisis.

“The local government wants to make sure they would be employed,” he said.Dayanghirang said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has also mandated the Council to approve applications that are sure to generate jobs.

In last week’s regular City Council session, a clerical error that accidentally omitted one word from the committee report on the SMI application prolonged the deliberation and resulted in councilor Leonardo Avila withdrawing his signature from the report.

In his committee report, councilor Arnulfo Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, rural and urban development, accidentally omitted the word “protected” from the reclassification application of Alfredo Yao, owner of SMI Development Corporation.When the omitted word came to light, councilor Leo Avila III, a member of the committee, withdrew his signature from the committee report, saying he had signed it in the belief that the area for which reclassification was being applied was only a light industrial zone.
