Another NCCC Mall outlet in Lanang
December 2, 2008 by tjbrewed

Info about the Ayala Center in Davao called Abreeza was first posted here in NeoDavao even before the local media knew and heard about it. Posts about the up and coming SM in Lanang was also posted first here in NeoDavao before the rumor started to revolve around the city. And Robinsons Cybergate Davao was first announced here in NeoDavao and the rendering was first posted here even before other bloggers blogged about it. So what’s new? well, here we go……

Another NCCC Mall outlet in Lanang!

Well, there’s no official press release yet from the company but an insider has informed us that NCCC will build another mall in the northern part of the city. The new mall will be a mixed of a hypermart and a lifestyle enclave. It will be located in a vacant lot near Guadalupe Village in Lanang.

The new mall will be minutes away from the up and coming Abreeza - the Ayala Center Davao, Robinsons Cybergate Davao, and SM Lanang.

I now know the reason why wala kaau nagapansin sa upcoming NCCC Mall sa Lanang. The news came out when Dabawenyos are now fed up with all the upcoming mall updates such as SM, Ayala Center, Gaisano Mall Sta Ana Wing, and Robinsons Cybergateway. I even received an email from one of the readers saying: "What's new? new malls are now sprouting anywhere in Davao". :D Kung baga na immune na ang mga taga Davao sa kadaghan sa mga major and big malls na iconstruct sa Davao this 2009.

Spirale Italian Ristorante

http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/2661/spiralefcv5.jpg (http://imageshack.us)

A while back, Feyma and I were out at Damosa Gateway doing some shopping, and we noticed a ralatively new place called Spirale Ristorante, an Italian place. It looked intriguing, although not upscale. Yesterday, I told Feyma that we should go try the place for lunch and see how it was. My expectations were not high, but I had an open mind, and was hoping that I was wrong in my expectations. What I expected was more of a “Filipino style Italian” food - sweet spaghetti, etc.

Spirale Ristorante

When we walked into the restaurant, one of the most prominent families in Davao was dining at the table next to us. Hmm… if these folks were dining here, it just had to be good, I thought.

We decided to order a variety of foods, so that we could get a true sampling of the place. Some were classic dishes, others were things I had never heard of or tried.

We started off with an appetizer - Prosciutto a Mango. Basically this is razor thin sliced cured ham wrapped around a spear of fresh Mango. It is then drizzled with olive oil, and sprinkled with Parmesan Cheese. It sounds like a strange combination, but we wanted to try it and see what we thought. First bite, I felt that the prosciutto really overpowered the flavor of the mango. After a couple more bites, though, the flavors were melding together nicely. In fact, it was quite delicious, one of my favorite new things I’ve tried before. The appetizer consists of 5 pieces of prosciutto wrapped mangos, my only desire was for more of them! Like I said, it took a couple of bites for my pallete to adjust to the intersting blend of flavors, but once it got tuned in, what a treat! This dish is a must-have appetizer, I recommend it highly.

PizziattaNext, we had a Pizziatta Don Rafael, which is a small pizza with meat, artichokes and sun dried tomatoes. A bowl of salad type greens is also brought with the pizziatta, which can be added on top for an extra kick of flavors. The thing that Feyma and I loved about this pizziatta was the crust. It is almost paper-thin, and very crunchy. Delicious! I am not sure what kind of cheese they are using on this, but whatever it is, it seems freshly made, and adds a lot to the dish too. Again, this is a must have, don’t leave Spirale without it!

CarbonaraNext, we had Carbonara Spaghetti. This was good, but I’ve had better. Still, I wouldn’t push away from the table if this dish is served. Both Feyma and I easily finished off our shared order, and didn’t complain about it. A few nights ago, I had dinner at another restaurant, and had Carbonara, which was one of the best I’ve had, so this probably influenced my feelings about the Carbonara at Spirale. Very good, but not great, as our first two dishes were.

SpaghettiWe finished off a great meal with Spaghetti with Meatballs. This was our least favorite of the dishes that we had at Spirale. Still good, but I’ve had much better. Everybody has their own tastebuds, no doubt, and others might really like the Spaghetti with Meatballs, but it was not quite good enough for my tastebuds. Would I eat it again? Sure, but if I was going to Spirale, I’d choose something else, since the other food we tried there was so very good. Even the best restaurants have dishes that are not as good as the others, so no big deal.

Overall, I would give Spirale my highest recommendation. It is located at Damosa Gateway in Davao City (on the Market Basket side). Prices are reasonable, with 3 main courses, an appetizer and two drinks, we paid less than P1,000, which I consider very reasonable.

Give them a try! Tell them that you read about the place on the WowDavao Web Portal!

Davao as retirees haven
PIA (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p081219.htm&no=05)
by Prix D Banzon
PIA Press Release
2008/12/19

Davao City (19 December) -- The Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) is working hard to make the country as retirees haven as it anticipate other regional countries to lower the cost of living to attract foreign retirees who are also effected by the global economic crisis.

Ret. Gen. Edgar B. Aglipay, chairman of PRA in a press conference last Wednesday (Dec.17) at the Royal Mandaya Hotel said they are establishing and preparing focal areas for foreign retirees.

Aglipay was in Davao City to open the Davao sattelite office that will cater to the whole of Mindanao making the office their fifth in the country. The four other areas are located in Baguio, Clark, Subic and Cebu with their existing central office in Metro Manila at Paseo de Roxas.

Aglipay said with the global meltdown, these retirees would be looking for areas where they could spend their retirement money at better rates. Back in their respective countries, cost of living becomes expensive and their money is not enough to meet their needs that is why they would be scouting for areas where they could retire comfortably with their money good enough to support their monthly sustenance, he said.

The Philippines, he said already has 20,000 foreign retirees enrolled at PRA but the country needs more because their stay here could spur economic activities and pump prime the economy.

He said for every foreign retiree coming to the country, it could create at least four jobs.

Citing for instance that Davao would have 1,000 retirees, each of them would spend $1,000 monthly and that would translate to $1 million injected in the economy of the city on a monthly basis.

Davao, he said as of now has only about 210 retirees and they are taking steps to position the city as retirees destination. There are about 2,000 to 3,000 foreign retirees all over Mindanao, he said.

Aglipay said they organized stakeholders in Davao from housing developers, health services, mall operators, hotels and entertainment facility owners for them to bond together and to also focus their services to foreign retirees.

A retiree, he said is given a special resident visa with a fee of US$1,400 for the principal applicant and US$300 for each dependent. There shall also be a required deposit of $50T for applicants ages 35 to 49 years old and $20T for 50 years old up and deposited in any accredited bank of PRA.

The retiree after a month may withdraw the required deposit provided that said money be invested for property acquisition, he said.

Davao, he said has better advantage than in other areas of the country because of its weather and the abundance of natural products like fruits and vegetables as well as availability of unspoiled resorts like beaches and the presence of good sports facilities like golf courses.

In support to their campaign Aglipay said they signed up a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with the Department of Foreign Affairs so that PRA could use their embassies around the globe to market the retirment sites of the Philippines.

He also said that a MOA was entered into with I-Remit, a private enterprise, where it has 600 offices around the world catering to overseas Filipino workers in remitting their money to the Philippines. These offices will carry the PRA collaterals as well as marketers to foreigners.

Meanwhile, he said they also entered a MOA with the Sunshine Development of China, the biggest investor on retirement facility of the country which has currently invested US$1.37 billion in various projects in Metro Manila.

Aglipay said their development is leading towards integrating all facilities where it can offer the needed services that foreign retirees can access in one area.

"This might take time here in Davao but we are simplifying the scheme through bonding among stakeholders where they could offer perhaps incentives and discounts to these retirees as a come on scheme," he said.

Davao really is a good destination area firstly because the cost here is lower compared to Manila and yet it can offer the quality service similar to what they can get in other areas, he added.

He vowed to also make Davao a retirement haven in the BIMP EAGA (Brunei Indonesia Malaysia Philippines - East Asian Growth Area. (PIA) [top]

Caffe Firenzo

November 11, 2008 by Bob

Although it is not a brand new place, Caffee Firenzo is not really a main-stream Coffee Shop in Davao yet. I would guess it is around 6 months old or so at this point. I have heard about the place before, and am kind of a “friend of a friend” of the manager of the place, so I’ve been wanting to give it a try.

Caffe Firenzo is located in the Market Basket Complex in Damosa, an area where Call Center operations are thriving in Davao. It would seem that a number of restaurants, coffee shops and other such places are popping up in this area, primarily to serve those connected with the Call Center operations.

The feel that you get when you walk into Caffe Firenzo is “upscale.” It has a nice interior, the air conditioning is great, nice furniture - just an all around good feel to the place when you walk in.

My wife, Feyma, and I went to check out this place. Feyma ordered a Mango shake, and I ordered a Blueberry Iced Tea. We also ordered a Smoked Ham Panini to share.
Drinks at Caffe Firenzo

Drinks at Caffe Firenzo

The first thing to be served were our drinks. When I tasted my Blueberry Iced Tea, it was not good. Tasted like medicine. I took a few more sips, just to see if maybe my taste buds lied to me on the first taste. Unfortunately, it was not my taste buds that were the problem. I asked Feyma how her Mango Shake was. She handed it to me and said I should try it myself. Hmm… I said “It has no flavor” - Feyma replied “Exactly.” So, overall, we were not impressed with the drinks. Our cups were still full, and I told Feyma, “should we just go?” She reminded me that our Panini had not been served yet. The drinks were so bad that I forgot all about the food!
Smoked Ham Panini at Firenzo

Smoked Ham Panini at Firenzo

After a few more minutes the sandwich was brought to our table. Wow, this looked good! Hopefully the flavor of the Smoked Ham Panini would be a winner, and make us forget about the drinks. I took one taste, and forgot all about the drink. The ham sandwich was great! Good flavor, good texture, all the right toppings. The sandwich was good quality ham with lettuce, tomatoes, cucumber and a great tasting mustard on it. Great combination of flavors! All of this was on a very fresh piece of Italian ciabatta bread. I couldn’t have asked for a tastier sandwich.

One of the measures of a coffee shop in Davao is the WiFi. How was the WiFi? Well, there was a wireless network, but the Internet did not work when we were there. No problem logging on to the network, but just no interent. The Network ID indicated that the Internet was provided by Globe. Maybe Globe was down, or this is an ongoing issue, I don’t know. It really should work, though, if they want to keep customers. There are dozens of coffee shops in Davao with FREE WiFi, so it is really a MUST HAVE for Firenzo if they want to attract customers.

Overall, I’d rate Firenzo only about 5 stars out of 10. If the drinks had been decent (even drinkable) it would have gotten an 8. Drinks and WiFi? 10! But, I feel like I am being generous with a 5 with the issues I mentioned.

I am a SOCO south goy but I wasted gas just to check this out.

Doesn't look like a commercial billboard to me. Maybe we are up for another surprise mga goys. This could be the rendering of SM City Lanang, or that of another project. :D

Davao City is top 10 BPO destination
Published : 2008-12-17

Davao City has added another distinction to its cap by ranking 4th in the Philippine 2008 Top 10 Next Wave Cities for ITO-BPO destinations.

The award was conferred by the Commission on Information & Technology (CICT) and the Business Processing Association of the Philippines last December 3 at the BPO Summit of the Philippines.

This puts to rest the speculation that the city is not ready to host multiple IT-BPO locators/ investors.

The CICT and BPAP scored 31 ICT-ready locations in the Philippine Cyber-Corridor and their performance in four major areas to include talent, infrastructure, cost and business environment.
Davao City bested four other Mindanao ICT locations by scoring well in the areas of talent and infrastructure.
The depth of Davao City’s manpower pool is on account of the presence of 42 colleges and universities which yield about 15,000 plus tertiary graduates annually.
Complimenting the cities’ performance in the talent area is the presence of major telecommunications providers, increasing number of upcoming BPO real estate, accessibility by air & land among others.
The local IT-BPO stakeholders led by ICT Davao Inc. and its private and public sector partners welcome the challenge of increasing the City’s competitiveness for attracting ICT locators and investments by working on improving performance in the area of business environment and risk management.
“We need to act together in improving the overall imagery of Davao City as a safe IT-BPO destination by providing substantive evidence to counter the negative perception on the Mindanao region. By so doing, we can continue to attract more ICT investments, create more jobs and improve Davao City’s economy,” said Wit Holganza, president of ICT Davao Inc.

The other locations that made it to the Top 10 Next Wave Cities for IT-BPO were:
#1 Metro Laguna #6 Angeles-Clark-Mabalacat
#2 Metro Cavite #7 Baliuag-Marilao-Meycauya
#3 Iloilo #8 Cagayan de Oro
#4 Davao City #9 Malolos/Calumpit
#5 Bacolod #10 Lipa

DAMOSA IT Park promises more jobs

The DAMOSA IT Park and Business Center was inaugurated on December 18, paving the way for the creation of more jobs for Davaoeños.

Anflocor Chief Operating Officer (COO) and senior vice president Ricardo Floirendo said the two-story business center will cater to IT related businesses to give employment opportunities, especially to call center agents.

One IT company from Manila, Concentrix (formerly Link2Support Inc.) which handles multiple companies, is already housing 1,000 call center agents.

Floirendo said the IT park is PEZA (Philippine Economic Zone Authority) registered, “meaning all offices occupying in the building are tax-free.”

He said the construction of DAMOSA IT Park and other commercial developments in DAMOSA were among the visions of banana magnate Don Antonio Floirendo.

“This is the vision of my father to develop other amenities that will complement other existing businesses in the area,” Floirendo said.

Currently, there are two IT companies operating in DAMOSA. The new building will be fully occupied by 2009.

“We hope to attract major businesses here. Malapit kasi sa airport and seaport. We hope this will become a major economic hub of Davao City,” Floirendo said.

He also said the company will duplicate the commercial developments in General Santos City and Panabo City.

Present during the inauguration were Anflocor president and CEO Alexander Valoria, Pitrade vice president and general manager Vincent Floirendo, Anflocor chief financial officer Oscar Grapa, DAMOSA Land Inc. vice president and general manager Edgar Villaver, and other Anflocor executives. Davao City is the richest city in Mindanao and the fifth richest city in the Philippines in terms of gross annual income as of CY 2007.

Tax collection up 11.9%: BIR
By Rhodamae M. Hernandez

BUREAU of Internal Revenue (BIR) district officer Jose Eric Furia said there was an increase in the collection of revenue taxes in Davao City.

"Nag increase tayo this year, kasi ang collection natin for last year was 4.2 billion and ngayon, January up to November, we have an actual collection of 4.7 billion," Furia told Sun.Star Davao.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

The 11.9 percent increase was garnered even with the enactment of Republic Act 9504 or the law exempting the minimum wage earners to pay their taxes.

The collections are from the income taxes, the value added taxes, percentage tax, other taxes and excise taxes.

"From these collections, 80 percent of the collection came from the income tax and the VAT," Furia said in an interview.

Hyundai-Davao exceeds sales target this year
By Carlo P. Mallo

AMID the troubled economy and a global financial crisis hanging over everyone's heads, Hyundai Cars in Davao City was able to surpass its target for the year.

"We made more than 100 percent of the target," David Bonifacio, of the family-owned Bonifacio Motors, told Sun.Star.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

According to Bonifacio, their sales have already breached the 100 percent mark of their target for 2008.

Automakers around the world are experiencing slump in sales with global economies plunging into recession.

European car makers showed a 14.5 percent slump in sales in October. The European automakers association also announced that the figures marked the sixth consecutive monthly fall in new car registrations, which were also down 5.4 percent for the 10 months to October.

"One of the features of our cars is that 90 percent of our lines are run on diesel," Bonifacio said.

Although sales were a little bit slow in November, it started well again this month, Bonifacio said.

Hyundai cars and SUVs are exclusively distributed by Bonifacio Motors, which has a showroom in Lanang, Davao City.

Hotel owner plans to set up retirement facilities in Davao
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE owner of one of the biggest hotels in Davao City, the Royal Mandaya Hotel, said he is inviting some investors to put up a hospital, leisure park, and other retirement facilities in his 100-hectare property in Baracatan, Toril that will primarily cater to foreign retirees.

Retired Col. Emilio Escandor, who also owns Dasia Security Agency, said during a press conference called by the Philippine Retirement Authority (PRA) on Wednesday that such plan would further help market Davao City as one of the retirement destinations in the country.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"Royal Mandaya is now one of PRA's marketers because the hotel really caters to foreign retirees," Escandor said. "To further help in the PRA program, I plan to invite some investors to put up retirement facilities in my 100-hectare property in Baracatan. I know that it will entail a lot of money, but I think it could be realized." more (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/hotel-owner-plans-set-retirement-facilities-davao)

Ako din, I have something to announce. :D

Remember the planned condominium of Vista Land in Buhangin (beside the flyover)?

Well, my cousin who works as an inhouse broker for Vista Land (Davao) already texted to inform me that they have already received a go signal from Manila to start pre-selling. My cousin said that she will give me the brochures as soon as they are available. Tentatively, the condominium complex will be comprised of six storey buildings nestled atop the hill overlooking JP Laurel Ave.

Still NOT Mindanao premier city huh?

mao ba ni tung sa may karaang balay?

Actually the roads are really small for Davao already. I don't think the city can expand any of them since no proper urban planning was ever done for the city. It's also worse during the 5-6:00 PM hours when everybody from Downtown goes to Matina roads. Grabe kaayo ang trapik! Dapat naga-isip na intawon ta para mogamit ug mass transit. Hehe, Councilor Mabel Sunga Acosta is a ninang pa naman of my brother.

BUMPER-TO-BUMPER. Vehicles bound
for downtown Davao City move bumper
to-bumper along MacArthur Highway
as they approach Matina Crossing
yesterday. The city government-run
Traffic Management Center attributes
the vehicle congestion to the increase
in the volume of traffic by 35 percent
as the Christmas celebration heightens.

I'll take your word for it.

Basing it on your experience, I find dealing with their kind of mentality very difficult. If you believe everything that they say, lalabas na bobo at gullible ka. On the other hand, if you know that what they are claiming are erroneous and point it out to them, sasabihan ka na loser, insecure, or may crab mentality. Either way, you are at the losing end.

Kaya dedmahin na lang ang mga taong ganyan.

By the way, our SSC Davao Christmas Party has a polka-dot theme. Sana you can make it.

Owners see Marco Polo Davao as Asia’s major hotel

DAVAO CITY—The owners of Marco Polo Hotel Davao are focused on elevating the hotel to become a major Asian hotel destination after a decade of harvesting international awards and acclaim.

Carlos G. Dominguez, president of Halifax Davao Hotel Inc. (HDHI), said “we envision the hotel to be a major hotel in Asia [and] our celebration is meant to continue with the dream.” The HDHI is the owner and operator of Marco Polo Hotel Davao.

“What’s good about our operation here is that we hired the best local talent whom we trained [under] the best international standards, and like a cruise ship, we are a large pool of talents,” he told guests.

The hotel celebrated its tenth anniversary on December 17, in time for the launch of new renovations worth a little less than P150 million.

“When Marco Polo Hotel Davao opened its doors in 1998, the hotel was poised to fulfill a mission of contributing to the growth of Davao and Mindanao as a premier destination in the Philippines,” the hotel statement said.

The company appeared to get more than what it set out for. Over the years, the hotel played host to international meetings like the Asean Tourism Forum and Philippines Development Forum as well as other milestones that became first for Davao.

In 2007, the hotel was adjudged Hotel of the Year among the Marco Polo hotels in Asia, and previously figued in the top slot in the Marco Polo Hotels’ guest satisfaction surveys in “overall staying experience.”

The hotel’s marketing efforts was also recognized by the Philippine Marketing Association as 2007 Marketing Company of the Year and was finalist in the 2007 and 2008 Best Hotels and Resorts in Asia. The last awards were sponsored by the international travel portal HotelClub.com.

The hotel’s food and beverage offerings also got the Hall of Fame award from the Mindanao Culinary Festival, winning the top prize for the last three consecutive years.

The hotel management also transformed its fourth floor outdoors and swimming pool into a beach resort-like facility, calling it The Deck, as a showcase of Davao as a resort destination. Hotel general manager, Stanley Lau, said the innovation wanted to “raise Davao as the next wellness destination and also want the locals to experience a spa that lived and served to its true essence”.

“For years in the running, Marco Polo has been a local benchmark for standards in hospitality [and] its leadership in the market directly relates with guests’ satisfaction,” the hotel statement said.

Economic crisis puts squeeze on Koreans in RP

Agence France-Presse | 12/21/2008 11:18 AM

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version | Send to friendSend to friend

MANILA - For years South Koreans have flooded into the Philippines, finding it one of the cheapest places in Southeast Asia for recreation, study and investment.

From Baguio City in the north of this sprawling archipelago to Davao in the south and all major cities in between, distinctive communities have risen with Korean restaurants, grocery stores, beauty parlours, hotels, resorts and bars.

Even Korean television dramas have become popular among Filipinos, having first been dubbed into the local language.

An estimated 75,000 Koreans now study in the Philippines, mainly learning English. It has also become a popular destination for retirees seeking year-round warm weather, cheap golf courses and apartments to live in.

South Koreans make up the largest number of tourists visiting the Philippines with 660,000 arrivals last year, roughly 20 percent of the year's total.

Yet the number of Koreans visiting is in decline. In the first 10 months of this year South Korean arrivals totalled 522,410 or 19.77 percent of the total, down 1.34 percent on the same period last year.

"I expect there will be some drop in tourism numbers and some investments may be put on hold but I don't see it lasting," said Jae Jang, president of the Korean Chamber of Commerce Philippines.

But the economic crisis is tightening its grip. While Korean firm Grand Utopia Inc. said recently it will go ahead with a 120-million-dollar resort and casino complex at the former US naval base at Subic Bay north of Manila, other projects are being put on ice.

Plans by shipbuilder Hanjin to develop a two-billion-dollar shipyard in the port of Cagayan de Oro in Mindanao island are now on hold.

In 2005 Hanjin built the world's fourth largest shipyard in Subic Bay and today employs 18,000 people. The shipbuilder has not commented on what impact the global downturn in shipping has had on the yard's order book.

A recent report by local television station ABS-CBN, meanwhile, said Baguio has seen its Korean population fall dramatically to 4,000 this year from 10,000 in 2007 due to the financial crisis.

Baguio, with its dozens of language schools, has been a popular draw for Korean students for more than 15 years.

"The Philippines is popular among middle-class Koreans because it is close to Korea, about three hours by plane, and is cheap," Jang said.

Jang, who has lived in the Philippines for more than 25 years, said when he arrived there were fewer than 1,000 Koreans living in the country. Today the resident population is around 120,000.

Although Korean tourists still top the Department of Tourism visitor arrivals list, the number visiting Cebu City is dropping according to Charlie Shin, vice-chairman of the United Korean Community Association in Cebu.

He said last year around 3,500 Koreans visited Cebu every week but today the figure is around 2,000.

Shin said Korean airlines has cut the number of weekly flights from Seoul to Cebu to 22, from 28.

Shin, who has lived in Cebu for the past five years, runs his own medical tourism business which he says is doing "well considering what has happened in recent months".

He said he was optimistic Koreans would continue to invest in the Philippines despite the financial crisis.
