Im off to Cebu this early morning.

Be back in Davao Monday night.

Just in time for the meeting of the Dabaw Kaisa, the Tsinoy Association, which is preparing for the inauguration of the Unity Arch at the end of Magsaysay Avenue on January 29, Chinese New Year next year.

The new arch will complement the Friendship Arch at the other end of the main street in Davao’s Chinatown.

Lyle and BrendelThe first time I ate at Karlyn’s was in March 2007, when I had barely started blogging about food in earnest. It was one of the first restaurants that I’d blogged about. Reading my old post over at AngDabawenyo.com, I remember how impressed I was with their food.

And I’m happy to say that a lot of people still find Karlyn’s cooking worth the trip. I was there last Sunday with Lyle, Brendel and Ria, where the couple treated us to dinner — their way of thanking me for helping Lyle with a WordPress problem.

There were no tenderloin tips being served then, so I settled for their Steak a la Pobre, and Fish Steak, and Beef Caldereta. Pigging out, I know… but it’s the holidays, so leave me alone. :D

The Steak a la Pobre was OK. I mean, nothing to complain about — it was tender and tasty. But don’t expect it to be the kind you find at fine-dining restaurants. This is more of Bistek Tagalog. The fish was not bad either, but nothing to rave about. Actually, it could’ve been a lot better if they hadn’t used the same gravy they use for meat…

The caldereta, unfortunately, was a complete failure. It was dry, and didn’t even come with potatoes or carrots.

I appreciate it, though, that their portions are big enough. Apparently, the owners are aware that, in order to succeed as a restaurant in Davao City, you do have to serve good food at affordable prices and in decent portions. (It’s funny how come many food establishments here have never figured this out — I guess they’re much too concerned about short-term profits.)

Karlyn's cookAt Karlyn’s, you choose the food from a buffet table, but you only pay for what you eat. The display the food in warmers, but you can have them reheated. Here’s their cook searing the steak that I’d just ordered.

Karlyn’s is an open-air affair situated near SM City Davao. From the mall on the way to Ecoland Diversion, it’s on the second road to your left. You’ll see their sign near the corner. Tel.: 299-0087. The place is quite big, with an area for functions. Parking space is currently not a problem there.

Pero he is optimistic to make the building higher so that the guests will have a good view of Samal Island. And given na libre na yung lupa na pagtatayuan niya, I think he can afford to make the building higher. Well, yan yung sabi nya. Hehehe. :lol:

Chiming for Gifts of Splendor

Surely, you’re now feeling the pressure to get those
exquisite presents to express your love to those special

With little time left, forget the malls with their mostly made in China products and horrible lines. Since last week when I started my Christmas shopping at these malls, I’ve encountered nasty, ignorant, young salespeople, newbies on the job really, who think customers owe them for them to be served. Oh, yes, Nuestra Señora, iba talaga sa States where shopping is an ultimate pleasure to the last cent.
I’ve been stepped on, elbowed, bumped with a shopping cart, and even brazenly overtaken while lining up to pay (as if I was invisible despite my size) by some harassed housewives from Timbuktu. And how does one react to violations of my human rights and dignity? Smile and still be merry! Don’t forget to say “excuse me” despite your being molested. It’s the time of the year, after all, when one is allowed to go unhinged during the day; and then transform into a kagalang-galang creature during celebrations with the entire barangay by night.
But last Sunday, I have had enough of these tortures. Thanks goodness all my toe nails are still alive! It was time to head to Chimes, the city’s premiere specialty store. Cindy Yap’s Chimes is my favorite, little, shopping paradise in Davao which carries all these wonderful gift ideas for the loves of my life and myself. No need to go to Manila just to shop at my all time favorite Rustan’s for all seasons now just to impress someone with something special.

Timor Leste president to hold peace lecture in Davao

MANILA, Philippines - Timor-Leste president and 1996 Nobel Peace Laureate Jose Ramos-Horta will visit Ateneo de Davao University in January 2009 for a lecture-visit on peace.

An article on the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines website said the lecture visit is scheduled at 2 p.m. Jan. 14.

"(It) is open to the general public and is part of a program to bring Nobel Laureates to the Philippines, coordinated by Bridges: Dialogues Towards a Culture of Peace and International Peace Foundation based in Bangkok, Thailand," the CBCP said.

Ramos-Horta, also a patron of the International Peace Foundation was born in Dili, East Timor.

He was educated in a Catholic Mission in Soibada village. Of his 11 siblings, four were allegedly killed during the struggle between Fretilin and Indonesian military.

The East Timor leader was appointed Foreign Minister in the "Democratic Republic of East Timor" government proclaimed by the pro-independence parties in November 1975, at age 25.

During the 24 years of the occupation of East Timor he was the international voice of the Timorese people.

In exile from his country from 1975 to 1999, he was the Permanent Representative to the United Nations for the Timorese independence movement.

The youngest UN diplomat in history and an international human rights figure, he is one of the three central figures in the country's struggle for independence.

In 1996 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with Bishop Carlos Belo, the religious leader of East Timor, "to honor their sustained and self-sacrificing contributions for a small but oppressed people."

A portion of the funds received from the Nobel Prize were used to establish the José Ramos-Horta Microcredit Fund for the Poor, which is in full operation today, with a payback rate of 97%.

Horta was also considered a possible candidate to succeed Kofi Annan as United Nations Secretary-General but he dropped out of the race to serve as East Timor's Prime Minister.

In May 2007 Ramos-Horta was elected President of Timor-Leste.

Ramos-Horta studied Public International Law at the Hague Academy of International Law and at Antioch University where he completed a Master of Arts degree in Peace Studies.

He was trained in Human Rights Law at the International Institute of Human Rights in Strasbourg and attended Post-Graduate courses in American Foreign Policy at Columbia University in New York.

He is a Senior Associate Member of the University of Oxford's St. Anthony's College and continues in his role as the international voice of East Timor. - GMANews.TV

Davao City to host nat’l vegetable summit next year

DAVAO CITY, Dec. 23 – Davao City will host the first National Vegetable Marketing Summit on January 5, next year where more than 500 producers, traders and buyers from the vegetable industry are expected to gather.

Roger Gualberto, former chair of the Vegetable Council in the Davao Region, said the Davao summit will be one of the major events of the council for 2009.

"This will be the first summit we will have that will be participated by all producers and buyers of vegetables nationwide," Gualberto said.

"We also expect the participation of service providers such as shipment agencies, cold storage facility companies, and others."

Gualberto said the event will try to address issues and concerns in the vegetable industry, including the deficiency of stakeholders to meet the required level of demand and production in the local market.

"This will be a convergence of ideas by the service providers, buyers and producers. We will let the farmers talk about their capacities, why they can't sell their produce to the buyers, and at the same time, buyers too will lay down their reasons why they can't buy the farmers' produce," he said.

On the other hand, Gualberto said the council will try to extend some help to possibly settle terms of vegetable trading.

He said at the end of the summit they will try to ink partnership through a memorandum of agreement (MOA) between the participating stakeholders to further improve the industry's needs.

Gualberto sees the staging of the summit as a measure to strengthen the vegetable industry in the countryside.

"Next year, we want to focus more on marketing. We will try to advocate more on this to help our farmers sell their produce (because some of them have the difficulty to find the market)," Gualberto said. (PNA)

MANILA, Philippines - In partnership with the United Nations, Microsoft recently launched Imagine Cup 2009, challenging students to harness technology to “help solve the toughest problems facing us today."

For the competition’s seventh year, contestants will create software solutions that are aligned to one of the eight UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), which span a range of global issues including poverty and hunger alleviation, gender equality, education, health and environmental sustainability.

Microsoft announced the Imagine Cup campus tour, which will visit schools and universities in Manila, Baguio, Laguna, Cebu, Iloilo, Davao and other key cities, from January to February 2009. Local finals will be held on April 2009.

THE balmy weather at the Seagull Mountain Resort last December 18 was made warm as the highest official in the land wined and dined with members of the press.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo flew in with three choppers from Sarangani where she attended the birthday party of boxing champ Manny Pacquiao the previous night.

Dressed in red, as befitting the mood of the holiday season, it was a relaxed President who went around the tables to shake the hands and greet each one a Merry Christmas.

As it was a first for most of the press to meet her in person, the air was filled with excitement and enjoyment.

Guests flocked towards the long stretches of buffet table filled with simple but delectable Pinoy dishes, including the President, who literally rubbed elbows with everyone.

The photo ops seemed endless but guests were given a chance to pose with her.

As in similar cases in the past, President Arroyo seemed to enjoy the provinces each time Manila gets noisy and antsy. Far from the politicking and bickering, she is almost always made welcome where ever she goes.

Three Sun.Star Davao staff got lucky during the raffle promo that day.

Sports editor Charles Maxey won a Philipps MP4 player; Gigie Agtay brought home an MP3 player; and business reporter Joy Romares-Sevilla got a Smartbro pre-paid kit.

Seven-hectare resort to rise in Samal

DAVAO City - The Bangayan Group of Companies is building a nine-hectare resort-residential complex on Samal Island that is expected to drive tourism activities in Davao region.

Under construction is the Holiday Oceanview Resort & Spa, which includes a 120-room hotel, a 400-room condominium complex, a marina, and a subdivision. The whole project is expected to be completed by 2009.

Brokers of the P300-million complex, however, are already selling the residential component of the project and participated in the Davao Travel Show at the SM City.

Tourism Secretary Joseph Ace Durano, who attended the travel show and inspected the different tourism projects in Davao over the weekend, said the rise of Davao as a major tourist destination is encouraging the development of hotels and resorts.

Davao is being promoted as an anchor destination of the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Growth Area.

Nearly 600,000 foreign and domestic tourists went to Davao region in the first nine months of 2007. Davao region groups the provinces of Compostela Valley, Davao del Norte, Davao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Island of Samal and Davao City.

Art Boncato Jr., director of sales and marketing of Marco Polo hotel in Davao, confirmed that both foreign and local tourists have been flocking to Mindanao in recent years.

He said occupancy rate at Marco Polo reached a record high of more than 70 percent in 2007, and signs are looking better this year.

Despite the new projects rising in Davao, Boncato said Marco Polo will remain the most luxurious accommodation facilities in the city.

The growth of tourism in Davao city has also triggered investments and projects in other areas of Davao such as Tagum.

Tagum City Mayor Rey Uy said tourism has been inducing economic growth in his city. Tagum is being promoted as the festival city of Mindanao.

well as far as i know the current one is owned by DLPC, now if DLPC would still let 911 use it as a sub-station then it's good but definitely the area is to small to be the main station of 911. The U/C new 911 is huge! do you remember the unproductive wet market in Ecoland plus 2 tennis playing court!

Pag dating mo sa terminal ka na bumaba maraming taxi sa babaan. Then from there mag taxi ka na to your destination. Kung sa Ateneo ka just tell the driver na sa may Ateneo College Campus sa may Roxas Boulevard near Marco Polo. Pero kung sa Dorm ka ng Ateneo mag stay sa Jacinto entrance ka pahatid mas malapit doon ang dorm. :)

There are two possible routes from the terminal going to ADDU - A via quezon blvd and B via quirino ave. Almost the same lang ang distance ng dalawa mga 3kms (+/-). Hope you find this helpful zoro. :)

I think he mentioned in the rpevious thread that his fiance is from Davao. So parang adpoted locale nya na rin daw ang Davao aside from his native San Fernando City, La Union.

then spent much in San Fernando City:

-studied AB PoliticalScience in DMMMSU Don Mariano Memorial State U and UPBagiuo n Collaboration with UPLosBan for post university study.

-taught in that place too
