Ang ganahan nako sa LKK compared to VP is that mas daghan cuties sa LKK :D

kay nakaadto na man jud kog LKK ug Ayala malls (ACC and Glorietta/Greenbelt)

but then the details that make ayala malls special sama sa greeneries (although naay gamayng landscaping ang LKK) ug kanang small things like nicely built signage, tarong nga ceiling and materials sa mga walls etc..the fine details that set Ayala and even SM Malls apart ... are missing

kung sa ambience, murag G-Mall ra gud oi (the newly renovated G-mall ha)..nice but naa gihapon kulang to put it nga same level sa ayala malls (or even SM for that matter)

Davao dads to prioritize setting up of ‘bike lanes’ in 2009
PNA (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=2&rid=178555)

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 2 (PNA) -- The Davao City Council is prioritizing early this year the proposed ordinance establishing bicycle lanes in the city’s main thoroughfares.

City Council Environment Committee chair Leonardo R. Avila III said the measure is a necessity in order to decongest traffic flows, promote the safety of bicycle riders and reduce pollution in the city.

"This (establishment of bike lanes) is for the safety of the bikers as well as in line with our campaign for environment-friendly modes of transportation," Avila said.

A survey prepared by the Support Services and Coordinative Section of the City Administrator's office in July 2007 showed there were two to three bikers passing through the city's main streets in a single minute.

At a given time, about 10,000 bikers are in the city streets. The peak hours are 6:00-7:30 in the morning and 5:00-7:00 in the evening.

The bicycle load count was made in eight areas in the city, namely: Quezon Blvd.-Roxas Ave.; Magsaysay Ave.; Agdao Flyover-Leon Garcia St.; Quimpo Blvd.-Bolton Bridge, R. Castillo-Sasa, Lanang Junction, McArthur Highway Junction and Quimpo Blvd. Junction.

The proposal is not a new move as Mayor Rodrigo R. Duterte already issued Executive Order No. 21 in 2005, creating the technical working group (TWG) that would tackle and draft the bicycle lane ordinance.

The ordinance will provide for the establishment of lanes in highways and signage in small roads that would be an integral part of the Traffic Management System (TMS).

This is patterned after the initiative of the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), which minimizes traffic congestion and pollution and has encouraged the use of bicycles.

Under the proposal, three classifications of bike lanes are identified.

The first lane is classified as "for common use," in areas like the city's main streets where it is impossible to establish a separate bike lane; the second one is the "priority path," where cars can also pass through but are expected to "respect" bikers; and the last is the designated bike lane that needs a longer time to implement.

The proposal also requires establishments and offices to segregate bicycle-parking bays with metal posts where bikes can be chained.

Offices are also encouraged to construct comfort rooms near the bike parking areas where biker-employees can change and freshen up before going to their respective offices.(PNA)

Still zero casualty in DC but 77 arrested for violating firecracker ban
MindaNews (http://www.mindanews.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5703&Itemid=50)

Friday, 02 January 2009 08:41
DAVAO CITY (MindaNews/02 January) – It’s still zero casualty-no fire incident-no indiscriminate firing as Dabawenyos welcomed 2009 but as of 8 a.m. January 1; 77 persons had been arrested for violation of the firecracker ban, the regional police chief, Chief Supt. Pedro Tango, said. In Tagum City, which has no firecracker ban, reports from provincial police chief, Sr. Supt. Benito Bianzon to Tango said 12-year old Keano Jay Buemil of Dalisay Gante in Tagum City suffered injuries on the upper part of his arm while Eduardo Rade, 41, sustained injuries on his right hand from firecracker explosions.

Also in Tagum, the right hand of nine-year old Joyce Camarin Touzo, of Purok Dalisay 56, Briz district, was hit by a stray bullet but she has been pronounced out of danger.

In Davao City which has imposed a firecracker ban since 2001 and where both children and adults greet the New Year with pots and pans, bells and car horns, majority of those arrested or 59 of the 77, were minors. A total of P7,500 worth of firecrackers was also confiscated.

The Davao City Council passed Ordinance 060-02 in 2002, prohibiting the manufacture, sale, distribution, possession, or use of firecrackers or pyrotechnic devices.
But the ban began a year before the ordinance was passed.

In 2001, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte banned the sale of firecrackers and pyrotechnics by not issuing business permits to vendors and malls intending to sell these. He said the money for fireworks would be better spent on food. He also announced a P5,000 bounty for anyone who could pinpoint anyone firing a gun during the merrymaking.

The cordinance penalizes first offenders with a fine of P1,000 or imprisonment of 20 to 30 days, or both; second offenders with a fine of P3,000 or imprisonment of from one to three months or both; and third offenders, a fine of P5,000 or imprisonment of from three to six months, or both.

Managers or owners of business establishments caught violating the ordinance will also be held liable and their business permits cancelled on the third offense.

The ban is not limited only to Christmas and New Year. Firecrackers and other pyrotechnic devices are banned as well in the celebration of the Chinese New Year and the Muslims’ Eid’l Fitr (end of Ramadhan).

During the ASEAN Tourism Forum in 2006 which the city hosted, the display of fireworks was not allowed. The activity was held in Samal City, across the Davao Gulf.

City Hall insiders told MindaNews organizers had difficulties transporting the fireworks to Samal since they could not go through Davao City because of the ban. (MindaNews)

Region 11 fares well
despite crisis: NEDA

Region 11' s economy continued to perform well during the first nine months of the year 2008 despite the global financial crisis, the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA) has said.

In a statement, Regional Development Council vice chair and NEDA 11 regional director Maria Lourdes Lim said the production of the region’s major export commodities such as banana and coconut increased and fishery production continued to rise, buoyed by the large leap in the volume of aquaculture production.

The region’s trade improved to $205.3 million and its tourist arrivals and earnings also rose by around 10 percent.

A total of 479 infrastructure projects worth P1.1 billion were also completed as of the third quarter this year, Lim said.

She also said the inflation rate started to drop from the 15.2 percent inflation rate in July triggered by the rising food and oil prices during the first semester of the year.

Lim, however, said the economic growth of the region would likely slow down next year with the adverse effects of the global meltdown.

Employment of the region’s Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) may not be expected to expand next year in traditional host countries, such as the United States except in Middle East countries, she said.

Lim said producing more competitive export products is one way of cushioning the impact of the global crunch.

The Information Communication Technology (ICT) sector should also anticipate the possibility of foreign business outsourcing firms to locate in the region, Lim said.

Nerbac-Davao yields P8-billion investments

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in Southern Mindanao reported P8 billion worth of investments poured into the region with its easy business registration processing project.

Dubbed as National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (Nerbac), the project has solved one of the major problems of businessmen starting a business who usually run into red tape.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Nerbac-Davao is an inter-agency, one-stop business center that provides assistance in registration and investment facilitation to start-up businessmen.

It also caters to services like investment promotion, investors' assistance, incentives, business registration and licensing, knowledge management, and one-stop export documentation center.

DTI reported that one of the best impacts of the project is the reduction of business registration processing time from 15 to 30 days in 2005 to just one to two days in 2008 region-wide.

As an anti-red tape initiative, Nerbac will continue to explore more innovative mechanisms to further shorten processing time for start-up enterprises. (PIA/Mai Gevera)

Ramos-Horta to kick off Asean peace dialogues
Updated January 03, 2009 12:00 AM

DAVAO CITY – Timor-Leste President and 1996 Nobel Laureate for Peace Jose Ramos-Horta will kick off this month the 2009 series of the second ASEAN “Bridges-Dialogues Toward a Culture of Peace” facilitated by the International Peace Forum (IPF) with two engagements here in the Philippines.

IPF chairman Uwe Morawetz said Ramos-Horta, who will be the featured keynote speaker of the Jan. 12-17 dialogue series, will tackle “Is long lasting peace an attainable dream?”

IPF has lined up other equally prominent speakers for the rest of the year in its series of peace dialogues to be held also in other ASEAN countries.

Ramos-Horta will first address a peace forum at the Ateneo de Davao University on Jan. 14 and at the De La Salle University on Jan. 15.

Ramos-Horta, 59, won the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize, for his active pursuit of peace, freedom and democracy in Timor-Leste.

With the funds he received as Nobel Peace Laureate, Ramos-Horta was reportedly able to establish a successful microcredit fund for the poor in his country. – Edith Regalado

Celina Gonzalez: Davao's swimming ace and RP's future Olympian
Saturday, January 3, 2009
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

ANNA Celina Montilla Gonzalez made her Southeast Asian (SEA) Games swimming debut in Korat, Thailand in 2007. She was just 14.

Her colorful swimming career began in 2001 when she joined a Red Cross swim training program at age eight.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"I then formally joined a learn-to-swim program under coach Rose Rodriguez also on the same year. After that short course, I then started formal competitive training under coach Brigido "Jun" Rodriguez," Celina shared to Sun.Star Davao.

It's interesting to note, however, that this five-foot-four morena lass first learned the ropes of badminton as a sport before she engaged into swimming.

She recalled, "My mom started me and my sister to play badminton while we were still staying in Butuan. When we moved to Davao in 1998, I still played badminton until my coach transferred to Manila so I tried duckpin bowling and then swimming."

Born to parents Raul and Evelyn Gonzalez, Celina has two other siblings - Pocholo and Ana Gianina. The latter is also making a name for herself in the sport that Celina had learned to love.

"My parents encouraged me to get into sports. I finally settled in swimming after having tried badminton and duckpin bowling in the past," she said.

She made her competition debut during the 10th IASA swimming competition in Iligan City in September 2001 where she brought home two bronze medals and one silver.

She also got a slot in Davao City's swimming team that saw action in the 2002 Southern Mindanao Regional Athletic Association (SMRAA) Meet. She helped the girls elementary relay team clinch a silver.

Celina, however, couldn't forget the time when she captured two golds and two silvers during the 2nd Ceelin Age-Group Swimming Competition in Manila in April 2002.

"I was very happy with my performance at that time," she reminisced.

She later joined Coastland Davao Swim Team (CDST) upon the encouragement of Coach Rose to her mom since Celina's cousin, Jose Joaquin Gonzalez, was already a member.

She claimed that her CDST training with Coach Jun helped her become a better swimmer.

"At CDST, I was privileged to be trained by a good coach and this eventually landed me a slot in the national training pool where I'm now being handled by national coach Carlos `Pinky' Brosas," she said.

She admitted being an athlete is difficult. As an RP national training pool member based at the Olympic Training Center at Trace College, Los Baños, Laguna, Celina observes a rigid daily routine.

She continued, "I train from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. then I attend classes until 4 p.m. I resume training at 5 p.m. to 7:30 to 8 p.m. I sleep around 10 p.m. and wake up the next day doing the same thing."

The holidays gave her the needed break from the rigors of her training schedule.

"I love being an athlete because I get to travel and meet many friends from other countries. It was really an achievement for me to represent the country in the SEAG," she said.

Her greatest dream is to swim in the Olympics just like his idols Michael Phelps, Natalie Coughlin and Coach Pinky.

Bill seeks to set up development body for Mindanao

MANILA, Philippines - A bill in the House of Representatives is seeking an integrated approach for Mindanao development.

House Bill 5620 seeks to convert the Mindanao Development Council into the Mindanao Economic Development Authority (MEDA) to ensure consistent and continuous development efforts in the South.

"An effective institutional mechanism shall be established to address the need for a coordinative and integrative approach for the formulation and implementation of various Mindanao-wide, Mindanao-specific inter-regional development plans, programs and projects," author and Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez said in an article on the House of Representatives website.

Rodriguez, vice chairman of the House committee on Mindanao affairs, said the proposed MEDA should be a corporate-type of organization without revenue-generating power.

It should primarily provide the institutional mechanism for an integrated and consolidated approach to Mindanao, he said.

He noted the declared policy of the State is to accelerate the socio-economic growth and development in Mindanao by encouraging and increasing trade, tourism and investments, private enterprise, and advancing efforts towards peace and development.

Under the bill, the MEDA should be based in Davao City and headed by a Chairperson duly appointed by the President.

Its overall directions and thrusts shall be provided and approved by an advisory board.

MEDA's role shall be to promote, coordinate and facilitate the active and extensive participation of all sectors to effect the socio-economic development of Mindanao.

The body shall also act as an implementing agency for Mindanao-specific interregional and Mindanao-wide programs and projects whenever necessary.

MEDA shall cover all the provinces and cities of Regions 9, 10, 11, 12, Caraga and the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), but shall not duplicate or overlap functions with other government agencies.

It will complement the initiatives of the National Economic Development Authority (NEDA), the Regional Development Committee, Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) and the Southern Philippines Development Authority (SPDA).

The MEDA shall also act as the integrator of all the peace and development initiatives in Mindanao to avoid fragmented development and ensure harmony and synergy among regions. - GMANews.TV

happy new year world! late greetings pero ok pa rin hehe.:)

anyways, after backreading lots of pages, dirty pages to be exact all over SSC mindanao, i developed a phobia... fear of reading elementary words like laser, polo, "greenbuilt", premiere, etc. being used/interpreted by these highfalutin individuals in a farout manner. trying not to add insult to their injuries, but them pretending to be someone of higher intellectual capacity yet misinterpreting these simple words... it's like... like degrading their kindergarten teachers actually. oh my grasses, and to think we are dealing with these people constantly.

how i wish na puro pictures na lang pwede i post dito sa SSC. no more words. tignan natin kung saan pupulutin ang mga taong puro sweet/virtual words lang ang alam. asking permission to flood pictures please...

Mayor: Ordinances against smoking, firecracker to stay
By Jose G. Dalumpines

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte vowed not to lift ordinances against smoking in public places, firecrackers and noise pollution while he is still in office.

Speaking at the program “Gikan sa Masa Para sa Masa,” Duterte said that these laws are made to protect the health and lives of the people.
Duterte said that the total ban on firecrackers assures that there is a margin of safety for everybody in the city while mere regulation of firecrackers will only endanger the lives of the people since it opens the floodgates tor all types of firecrackers including those that are illegally manufactured.
“Total ban will ensure that whoever explodes the firecracker is truly apprehended because of the existence of the law,” he pointed out.
Duterte urged those who are against these laws to seek reprieve by asking those who might replace him as mayor to put aside the implementation of these ordinances when his term ends in 2010.
He also warned that those who tinker with illegal drugs will have real problems with him. “If I am no longer the mayor, I will leave it to the next leadership to decide what is good for the city,” Duterte said.

DTI-NERBAC Davao pours P8-B for business registration processing project
PNA (http://www.pna.gov.ph/index.php?idn=&nid=2&rid=178945)

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 5 (PNA) -- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the Davao Region has reported a total of P8 billion worth of investments poured into the region’s business registration processing project.

Teolulo Pasawa, DTI’s National Economic Research and Business Assistance Center (NERBAC) director, said the project has solved one of the major problems of businessmen in starting a business who usually run into red tape.

Pasawa said DTI-NERBAC Davao is an inter-agency, one-stop business center that provides assistance in registration and investment facilitation to start-up businessmen.

It also caters to services like investment promotion, investors' assistance, incentives, business registration and licensing, knowledge management, and one-stop export documentation center.

He said DTI reported that one of the best impacts of the project is the reduction of business registration processing time from 15 to 30 days in 2005 to just one to two days in 2008 region-wide.

As an anti-red tape initiative, NERBAC will continue to explore more innovative mechanisms to further shorten processing time for start-up enterprises, he added. (PNA)

Indonesia’s tuna-catch curbs brighten prospects for RP’s transshipment fish
Business Mirror (http://businessmirror.com.ph/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=4143:indonesias-tuna-catch-curbs-brighten-prospects-for-rps-transshipment-fish-port&catid=33:economy&Itemid=60)
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Monday, 05 January 2009 21:59

http://pfda.da.gov.ph/pictures/dfpc.jpg

DAVAO CITY—A recent move of the Indonesian government to regulate its tuna catch may spell a bright prospect in the usage of the Davao Fishport Complex, the country’s only transshipment fish-port complex, its manager said.

“There are two implications that all favor the Davao fish port,” said Mario Malinao, acting manager of the Davao Fishport Complex.

One would be a robust activity in the fish port, which last year sustained a big drop in both the arrival of local and foreign fishing vessels and in the volume of fish catch.

“This will make the use of the Davao fish port healthy because fishing boats using Indonesia ports would likely detour to our port,” he told a regular Monday press conference at the SM City here.

Second, he said, “is that this will make the Davao fish port more attractive than the other fish port complexes [in Koror, Palau and Guam] because of accessible airport.”

“This is the built-in advantage of the Davao Fishport,” he said. Philippine Airlines has seven regular flights to Manila and Cebu Pacific Air has six.

Malinao said Indonesia only recently ordered its fishing of tuna in its waters regulated. The northwestern waters of Indonesia have been acknowledged as one of the richest tuna highways in the world.

This would leave to three the choices of long-line fishing boats to call port as they roam the western Pacific waters for the prized tuna and blue marlin.

Despite the prospects, the fishport complex here suffered a big drop in activity.

Arrivals of foreign long-line fishing boats was recorded at only 504 last year, a decline by 33 percent from 762 arrivals in 2007. Last year’s arrivals would translate to an average of 42 ships monthly, compared with 63.5 ships a year earlier.

Only in the years 1998 and 1999 did the port surpass the 1,000 mark in foreign fishing boat arrivals, posting 1,282 and 1,247, respectively.

Consequently, unloaded fish catch also dropped, from 5,576 metric tons in 2007 to only 3,917 metric tons, or a decline of 29.76 percent.

In General Santos City, where there are about 5,000 deep-sea fishing boats using long-line fishing method, Malinao said only about 1,500 went to sea.

Domestic fishing boats carry an assortment of fish types that include the locally known belong-belong, matambaka, galunggong and pirit.

“This explains the big drop in our fish landing,” he said.

Last year Malinao said climate change and the unabated rise in crude-oil prices in the world market were the main reasons that discouraged both local and foreign fishing boats to go to sea. He said actual revenue for the entire year was already near P5 million, off the target of P39 million but pending final computation.

The sharp decline in arrivals of fishing boats and tuna and other fish landings at the port has already forced the port to resort to cost-saving strategies to make port operations still viable and within budget allocation. He said the fish-port complex posted an operation ratio of 0.78, or spending only 78 centavos of every peso that it was earning. The figure represents already a decline from its ratio of 0.83 during the last three years.

By September last year, Malinao said the austerity program “posted a healthy operation ratio despite a double whammy in drastic climate change and spiralling oil prices.”

“From the point of view of the global slowdown in tuna production, the revenue levels and the reduction in the operation ratio would make the Davao Fishport Complex financially and operationally viable,” Malinao told a business forum last year.

The fish-port complex here is one of the eight operated by the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority. Two others are found in General Santos City, which has become a major fishing port, and in Zamboanga City, both in Mindanao.

Another fish port is in Tanza-Esperanza, Iloilo City, in the Visayas, and in the Navotas Fishport in Metro Manila, and one each in Lucena City, Pampanga and Camarines.

2009 - Slowdown in Davao City's economy seen
By Joy Romares-Sevilla
Sunstar Online (http://www.sunstar.com.ph/davao/slowdown-davaos-econ-seen)

January 6 - THERE would be a slowdown in the export, investment and in the tourism industries in Davao City this year, a city councilor said.

In an interview, Councilor Peter Laviña, chairman of City Council committee on trade and commerce, said Monday that the city is expected to feel the effect of the global recession on the second and third quarters of the year, which would also mean lower employment generation during these quarters.

"We will be affected by the crisis, however, for the export industry, we will not be affected by the massive layoff unlike Mactan and Baguio where there are export processing areas," Laviña told Sun.Star.

He added that employment will likely be affected, but claimed that the local government of Davao is undertaking stimulus plan for the city. He said that in addition to the city budget of P3.2 billion for the year, the City Council has also authorized the city for the loan of P3 billion from the Landbank of the Philippines (LBP).

"The city will loan P3 billion from the Landbank to pump prime the local economy. The amount will be used for infrastructure projects that will generate more employment," he said.

According to Laviña, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has said the latter will not implement projects that he can't complete within a year. But, the councilor said they already expect that some projects to be implemented will spillover.

"Some projects will spillover, but what is important is we send a good news that the government is doing something," he said. "We will put the project in place in time when the city will experience the adverse effect of the crisis, this is anticipated in the second and third quarters."

"We should also be resilient because we cannot expect continuous economic growth this year," Laviña added.

He, however, asserted that with the entry of big investors in the city, such as the Ayala Land, Robinsons, and Filinvest, Davao City is still hopeful the economy will be well by the end of the year.

What's in store for Davao City 2009?

Well the obvious are the u/c projects expected to be completed and operational this year. That would obviously increase the economic activities going on in the city and expect a substantial growth of Davao's income. Here are some of them (projects which went full blast and expected to be operational this year).....

Ayala Mall
Robinson's Cybergate
Damosa I.T. Park
Holiday Oceanview Resort
Eco4000
One Oasis
Central Park Hotel

I am personally expecting new investors to come..... specially Davao is on a roll at present.

Nagsugod na sila sa groundworks last year pa. Pero wala pa nasugdan ang structures mismo kay hantod karon naa pa'y mga yuta / establishments na under negotiations pa ang purchase. Gusto man gud sa Ayala makuha tanan lots immediately fronting JP Laurel Avenue. :)

Nice kaayo! Now if only the owners of the establishments fronting JP Laurel would sell their properties to Ayala para mas nindot ang frontage sa mall. Gahi man gud ang ubang tag-iya. Paugat jud ug maayo. Tsk tsk.

If Ayala wont be able to purchase those remaining lots then Abreeza will look like how SM NoE is now.

You forgot Playa Azalea which is comparable or even better than Holiday Oceanview minus the yacht club, Magallanes Residences, Noblesse Heights, and the upcoming Vista Land condo.

I'm not expecting for new big time investors to come to Davao by 2009 (except for those who already announced their projects mostly in real estate for Davao as of 2008 like Ayala Land, Robinsons Land, Filinvest, and SM Prime). But I'm hoping that SMEs will continuously fuel the local economy of Davao City. I also hope that the fundamentals and policies laid out for our local SMEs by the local government and the local business chamber will help our city's economy in spite of the impending global financial crisis.

I always believe that there is an opportunity in every crisis. I pray that Davao will seize it.

You also forgot to mention na confirmed na sa Playa Azalea ang SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, although hindi lang natin gusto ipagmayabang kahit ang nag confirm na mismo eh ang developer ng Playa Azalea.

Nakalimutan mo rin i-mention yung isa pang mall. :D
