You also forgot to mention na confirmed na sa Playa Azalea ang SHANGRI-LA HOTEL, although hindi lang natin gusto ipagmayabang kahit ang nag confirm na mismo eh ang developer ng Playa Azalea.

Nakalimutan mo rin i-mention yung isa pang mall. :D

Really? a Shangri-La Hotel within Playa Azalea? Interesting. But let's not include it sa upcoming projects yet.

And yeah, I forgot to mention NCCC of Lanang - just waiting for some confirmation from the media. I have already sent emails about NCCC Lanang to local bloggers and reporters but failed to ignite the interests of the local media. Maybe because the local media find "an upcoming mall scoop" as not that interesting anymore or just common in the city. Siguro na purga na sa pag announce ng mga upcoming big malls. Imagine 3 interesting branded malls to be constructed all in one year. :) Dagdagan pa ng NCCC....parang ang response nila na lang is...not again...ehehehehe which is good by the way.

Very typical of Ayala malls in recent years. :)

Incidentally, kami ng PR Officer namin ang magkasama the whole afternoon. We had meryenda at Picobello after meeting with the City Legal Officer at Dencia's. Napagusapan namin yung regarding sa "rumor" na yan. She said that it is sound PR practice to announce only when the final plans are already laid out. Pangit daw kasi yung mag aannounce tapos nothing final pa naman. So goys, expect a formal announcement around second quarter of this year na. Or better yet, tingnan nyo na lang sa site if nagstart na because chances are, baka ang formal announcement sasabay na sa opening.

Davao Tuna Grill at Shangri-la Plaza

My brother who works as a seaman abroad treated me to dinner. He is earning more than ten times than what I am earning. He was with his wife.

We met at Shangri-la Plaza in Ortigas Pasig City. Shangri-la Plaza is one of the best places to hang around in Metro Manila. You can shop if you have the thousands of pesos, eating out there can be afforded by an average Filipino, watch movies though the prices are a bit higher than the usual cinemas around Metro Manila.

We went down to Shang’s food court section, there were many to choose from. My brother let me chose, then I saw Davao Tuna Grill at the farther part of the food court. Fish and seafoods are my favorite; they’re at least slightly healthier than those oily poultry meats.

I chose Tuna Sizzling Sisig. It costs 65 pesos without the drinks. I forgot the price of the drink. Let me just round off it to 100 pesos with the drink. The taste was respectable, surely better in taste and price compared to Kenny Rogers Roasters.

I will definitely go back to eat at Davao Tuna Grill.

online purchasing, free delivery, etc., these can be pretty innovative, pero in the long run, once you have the existing insfrastructure, you will be the winner. it might take time, pero you will be light years ahead once you have that.

I'm sure mahal ang bayad ana diha kay mag pa presyo ang tag iya sa balay og yuta. Sabagay rich man ang Ayala so mapalit jud na nila...

Nagsugod na sila sa groundworks last year pa. Pero wala pa nasugdan ang structures mismo kay hantod karon naa pa'y mga yuta / establishments na under negotiations pa ang purchase. Gusto man gud sa Ayala makuha tanan lots immediately fronting JP Laurel Avenue. :)

PGMA confident that decent jobs will be available to Pinoys

Davao City (5 March) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo said the government will be able to realize its dream of providing more decent and high-paying jobs for the Filipino people now that the international businessmen have recognized the capability of the Philippines to become a developed country in the near future.

Trade and Industry Secretary Peter Favila, on the other hand reported to the President that the Philippines 'stood tall' in front of top businessmen of the world who recognized the Arroyo administration's efforts to bring back the positive momentum of the economy.

Secretary Favila said the international community, especially top businessmen, acknowledged the growing economy of the Philippines under the Arroyo administration.

As a result of this, Favila said the Kenneth Tachman, CEO of Teletech, a leading business process outsourcing company in the world, had the intentions to expand their business in the Philippines.

Teletech is planning to establish five new call centers in the country. DTI is eyeing Camarines Sur in Bicol, Valencia town in Negros Oriental, Dumaguete City and Davao as new locations for Teletech's expansion program.

Teletech is also planning to buy an island in the country to be developed as a tourist resort after learning that tourism is one of the biggest income earners of the Philippines.

Aside from call centers, Favila told the President that Prakash Hinduja, who owns big businesses in India and is one of the top 1,000 corporations in the world, also expressed his strong intention to expand his call center operations and establish a manufacturing company in the country. City finalizing projects for Land Bank loan
Mindanao Daily Mirror
January 07, 2009

The city government is now finalizing the details of its projects for the loan it will acquire from Land Bank of the Philippines (LBP).

City administrator Wendel Avisado, however, said the city might only avail itself of P1.9 billion of the P3 billion offer of the LBP as it only needs to finance the legacy projects of Mayor Rodrigo Duterte in his final term of office.“We only need P1.975 billion for the projects. Maybe that’s the only amount we will borrow from Land Bank. We are ready to submit all the documents any time next week to pave the way for the signing of the loan agreement,” Avisado told the Mirror. He said the city will spend P670 million for the final phase of the traffic signalization program, which will include the establishment of the traffic control center with closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras in all intersections. Another 21 intersections will be equipped with traffic lights as it has been deemed necessary by the city as traffic movement has increased. The infrastructure projects of the city will costs P500 million, while P400 million will be spent for engineering equipment.

Another P350 million will be used for the sanitary landfill and equipment, and P100 million will be used for the city’s urban housing program.

P25 million will be needed to set up a crematorium and columbarium.“The mayor wants these projects done within his term,” Avisado said.Duterte has only 17 months left in his third and last term as mayor. Editha Z. Caduaya

Council OKs purchase of land for Muslim cemetery
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO
Mindanao Daily Mirror
January 07, 2009

The City Council has approved on second reading the ordinance authorizing Mayor Rodrigo Duterte to purchase a parcel of land in barangay Sirawan, Toril that would be used as a public cemetery for Muslims.

The ordinance had been set for approval on third reading but was recalled by the Council after receiving on Monday a letter dated January 2 from the office of Sirawan barangay captain Madjid Lumpapac objecting to the plan of the city to use the land as public cemetery.

In his letter, Lumpapac said the new Sangguniang Barangay did not pass a barangay resolution to the City Council or to any other concerned city office or government agency concerning the purchase of the Noredyan A. Tadile and Racman Lingas property to be used as a public cemetery.

The city needs a barangay resolution of no objection to be able to purchase the land. The previous barangay council, which was replaced by the current one, had issued such a resolution.

In his letter of objection, Lumpapac said the area for public cemetery is “adjacent to the community and to the water being used by the residences of Sirawan Muslim community.”

“Furthermore... If ever the above matter be approved and granted, environmentally our water below may be or could be contaminated not just by the human waste but also by the bodies in the said area that is being proposed.” Lumpapac added.

The barangay captain also requested the members of the City Council to conduct an “actual ocular inspection.”

Lumpapac complained that they did not receive a letter of invitation or coordination to conduct an ocular inspection.

Speaking at the Council session yesterday, Lumpapac said he and some barangay kagawads were invited to the Council committee hearing but were not asked their opinion on the matter.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte has already expressed his desire to build a public Muslim cemetery in the area, but Lumpapac maintained his objection to the project.

Lumpapac also said he would not agree to the project even if the City Health Office certifies that the area is safe for a public cemetery.

Councilor Leo Avila, however, said since the new barangay council has not issued a barangay resolution revoking the previous barangay council’s resolution of no objection, the previous resolution stand.

This viewpoint was shared by the other councilors.

The proposed site for public cemetery also passed the City Health Office inspection and has received a certification declaring it a safe area for a public cemetery.

In the end, despite the objection of Lumpapac, the majority of the Council approved on second reading the ordinance.

Davao Doctors as excellent health care provider
Mindanao Daily Mirror
January 07, 2009
BY MAYA M. PADILLO

Now under Metro Pacific Investment Corporation (MPIC), Davao Doctors Hospital is eying to be the center of excellence in providing health care services in Mindanao. DDH chief operating officer Andres Licaros said to achieve the target, the hospital must not only improve its services, it must also educate the community and let them identify their options.

“The best persons to push patient education are the doctors. Our north star is our patients. They deserve nothing less,” Licaros said in an interview with Davao City journalists.

Licaros said another challenge for the hospital is to raise the competitiveness of its doctors. “I think we have enough competent doctors. Kung talent lang hindi nagkulang ang Davao,” he said.

He said he is also planning to link up with Davaoeño doctors who are successful abroad to train doctors here. He had been successful in this endeavor when he led St. Lukes Medical Center in Manila.

Another initiative is putting up a Davao Doctors satellite center to extend and improve services to the market. This will be set up in the first quarter of this year. “It doesn’t need much fund. This is to bring the service closer to the market,” Licaros said.

Also lined up in the first quarter of this year is a new tower for the doctors’ clinic, a new parking area, and renovation of the old wing located in the second floor.

“(This) year, despite the crisis, we will achieve better. We want to be identified as an excellent health care provider,” Licaros said.
He said Davao Doctors Hospital will follow the benchmarking with the best hospitals in the US like the JCI (Joint Commission International), an international arm of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations that evaluates quality standards of US hospitals. “I hope I will be able to make people feel that they are the most valuable in the organization in delivering health care services,” he said.

The hand that rocks the cradle

Taking the lead in bringing DDH services to a higher level is the new chief operating officer, Andres Licaros. An engineer by profession, Licaros went through several professions, including being a medical representative for Squibb. It was then that he realized the importance of learning how to manage people. He also worked as technical trainer of San Miguel Beer and as sales rep of Perfetti Van Melle, maker of Mentos candy. It was in 2000 that he was offered to work as consultant of St. Lukes Medical Center.

He may be an achiever in every field he enters, but for him his greatest fulfillment is for his four children – including Anna Theresa Licaros, who was Bb. Pilipinas-Universe in 2007 – to learn his own experiences. Licaros said he wants to see his children succeed and always instills in them the importance of education and achieving their goals. “Being a family person is my biggest contribution,” he said.

Maybe. But according to my informants, the new medical tower will be taller than the existing one. If that is the case, I don't think they can call it twin towers technically speaking.

Editha Z. Caduaya

DAVAO CITY —

Airline promotions, such as the zero and P500 all-in fare offers, have raised interest among Metro Manila residents who mulled to leave the region during the long holiday break. Inquiries from those I met during gatherings or daily strolls, as well as when shopping were common. How safe is Mindanao with the spate of bombings and kidnapping in recent weeks? Where to go? What economic opportunities are available?

My replies were predictable, nothing new from what I have mentioned in the past. The bombing and kidnapping incidents were isolated and Mindanao’s cities are generally safe even for strangers. Despite all those reports, I feel more confident when I go out at night in Davao or even in Zamboanga compared with traveling even during day time in Metro Manila.

In my last trip, by the way, I was surprised when a decent-looking woman bumped my back pocket while checking some goods in a shopping mall in Cubao, Quezon City. The place was not crowded and she disappeared immediately when she noticed my reaction. You hardly get such scare when you go shopping in cities here in Mindanao.

For new travelers to the island, Davao is the best place to start since it has a developed tourism infrastructure support. Hotel rooms from budget to international rates are available and tour packages are inexpensive. The beaches and nature parks are among the best in the South, and no other place in the country beats this city when it comes to tropical fruits and flowers. Neighboring provinces where natural wonders could be found are easily accessible

good day davao!

daan lang ako to re-post these pictures. nevermind the quality ang importante ang subject, lush greeneries right at the heart of davao city business district. it would take many years (specially the trees) bago maduplicate ng ibang cities ang ganitong setup, a miniature version of central park newyork. davao really leads when it comes to projects pertaining social services and concerns (rescue 911, garbage segregation, anti-smoking, theme parks and many many more).

MARCO Polo Davao (MPD) plans to work closely with the local government of Davao and the Department of Tourism to tap new markets for the burgeoning tourism industry in the city.

The hotel recently celebrated its 10th year of operations. In his speech, Carlos G. Dominguez, president of MPD owner Halifax Davao Hotel Inc., said we really envisioned our hotel to be a major player in Davao tourism contributing to the growth of our city as a premier destination in Mindanao.

Our celebration tonight is a reminder to continue realizing that vision. We renew our commitment to take Davao closer to new markets as we work with. This is to uphold our image as an emerging regional and international city. Our leadership in the market shall continue to lift Davao as top-of-mind destination in the country.”

The Marco Polo Davao executive added that “our commitment to excellence certainly puts us at par with current global standards. Our global outlook and local approach allow us to harness homegrown talents to be exceptional performers in the world stage of hospitality.MPD celebrated a milestone on December 17, 2008, to pay tribute to the hotel’s journey for the past 10 years. Gracing the affair were top executives from the hotel’s corporate accounts, Davao families, media and city officials, as well as Marco Polo Hotels vice president for operations, Andre Scholl.

1. calinan terminal - from bukidnon
2. toril terminal - from digos city
3. tibungco terminal - from panabo city

More opportunities seen for ICT, tourism sectors in 2009

By Joy Romares-Sevilla

THE top official of the Davao City Chamber of Commerce and Industry Inc. (DCCCII) said Wednesday that the information and communications technology (ICT) and the tourism sectors have a large opportunity to get a boost this year.

In Wednesday's edition of the Club 888 press forum at the Marco Polo Davao, Simeon Marfori II, DCCCII re-elected president, told reporters that tourism industry, particularly the management of retirement villages, will continue to grow until 2010, saying that foreigners would likely consider the type of weather the country has.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"Westeners would likely prefer to stay here with the kind of weather that we have. Retirees could not afford to stay in places with cold climate," Marfori said.

He added that ICT sector has also a big opportunity to grow with the proper coordination from the public and private sectors.

"We only need to push harder so that investors (for the ICT) will come here," Marfori said.

Earlier, Councilor Peter Laviña, City Council committee chair on trade and industry, said that ICT has a bright prospect this year considering that companies abroad will downscale their staff and might outsource some of their works.

Davao City is considered an ICT/BPO destination because of the cheaper outsourcing cost compared with other cities in the Philippines, not to mention the city's huge pool of human resources from about 42 colleges and universities, which can produce qualified BPO workers and staff.

Marfori, on the other hand, said the slowing down of the economy this year is anticipated as a result of the global financial crisis. However, he said Davao City will continue to grow.

"We will continue to grow, but not at the pace we experienced in 2008," he said. "Among industries that will be affected this year are the manufacture of durable goods, such as cars, appliances, and electronics; retail goods that are non-food; and the least affected will be the food (since everybody needs it)."

Meanwhile, Marfori said DCCCII will still continue with its advocacies this year and will intensify the implementation of its programs.

"We believe that Davao City will be better than other cities in the country this year because we are not a very export-dependent economy," he said.

Marfori concluded that DCCCII has a very good board to focus on the things that the city needs to do to sustain, if not to further develop, the growth of the local economy.

City to have facilities for juvenile offenders

By Rhodamae M. Hernandez

CITY Councilor Angela Librado Trinidad, chair of the committee on women and children concerns, said the council intends to pass a resolution for the construction of facilities for children in conflict with the law (CICL).

"Naay gihatag na budget si mayor na P30 million na dili dapat gastuhon but by an ordinance. So sa katong sa Juvenile Justice ordinance nato (The mayor has allotted P30 million for the implementation of the ordinances, so for our Juvenile Justice), we will put up a pre-trial home for the minors and a rehabilitation center for them," Trinidad said in Wednesday's media forum at the City Council building.

She said the pre-trial home is for the minors who are facing charges, while the rehabilitation center is for the convicted ones.

She said that with the increasing number of minors committing crimes, it would be difficult for the community to accept them, thus the facility will be provided to take care of them.

"Kung dili sila madawat, kinsa man ang mudawat nila? Diri na sila ibutang para ma-guide usa ibalik sa ilang mama ug papa (If the communities will not take them back, who will? So, they will have to be placed in the center to be given proper guidance before they are returned to their parents)," Trinidad said.

maybe a minibuses of appropriate sizes for some smaller roads and dedicated franchise route to and from these terminals would ease some inconveniences. and buses that can accommodate luggages, handy crates of fruits, chickens, goats and porkys

PPA taps French gov’t for P11-B to install 74 ports
By Lynda B. Valencia

MANILA, Jan. 8 (PNA) – The Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) will tap the French government for P11 billion for the installation of 74 roll-on/roll-off (RO-RO) ports nationwide to link the provinces and reduce the transport fare of goods.

The project is part of the governments pump priming activities to mitigate the effects of the global prices.

Atty. Oscar Sevilla, general manager of PPA, said the project is dubbed as the Greater Maritime Access (GMA) and will be done by the contractor of the Eiffel Tower.

The following provinces are the priority in the proposed list --Pangasinan, Isabela/Aurora, Quezon, Romblon, Mindoro, Cavite, Palawan, Masbate, Albay, Surigao del Norte, Eastern Samar, Davao and Cotabato.

DoE seeks suppliers of 5-M CFLs

MANILA, Philippines--The Department of Energy, as part of the government’s energy efficiency drive, said it had started its search for suppliers of five million compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) for distribution this year.
It said the lamps would be the first batch of the 13 million that would be distributed to residential electricity consumers all over the country.

In the Visayas and Mindanao, Visayan Electric Co. Inc. will get 250,000 units, Davao Light and Power Co. Inc., 200,000 units, and Cagayan Electric Power and Light Co. Inc., 90,000 units.

That, or since they are the richest Mindanao city based on COA's report for Fy2007, they can afford to buy and distribute CFLs themselves.

UDHA BOOSTS DAVAO CITY URBAN POOR HOUSING PROGRAM
January 7, 2009 ·

High-end housing chips in P13 million for urban poor

By ROGER M. BALANZA

The Davao City government now has P13 million worth of housing funds earned from the 20 % Balance Housing component of the Urban Development Housing Act (UDHA), for use in its socialized housing program.

The UDHA law mandates that high-end housing projects allocate 20 percent of project cost or land area for low-cost housing.

Councilor Arnolfo Ricardo Cabling said the fund represents compliance of 12 ongoing high-end housing projects to the UDHA law, covering a total of 170 hectares.

The fund could translate to 34 hectares if the high-end subdivisions decide to comply with the 20 % Balance Housing with raw lands.

Cabling, chair of the committee on housing, said the Local Housing Board had pegged the P13 million socialized housing fund based on the P5,000 per hectare valuation under the UDHA Balanced Housing component.

Cabling said the P13 million for socialized housing would come on top of the P100 million Urban Land Reform Program fund for low-cost housing to be taken from the P3 billion loan the city government would take out from the Land Bank of the Philippines.

Meanwhile, the Local Housing Board is now considering purchase of 27 hectares costing 69 million offered for sale by 9 land owners as relocation site for the city’s homeless.

Cabling said with the high-end housing boom in the city, more socialized housing fund from the 20 percent Balance Housing of UDHA would raised, allowing the local government to address acute housing needs of the poor.

Cabling is author of the landmark legislation Davao City Shelter Code, which required that high-end housing projects in Davao City should establish their socialized housing components in the city to benefit locals.

Japanese women gaga over RP bananas

By Kristine L. Alave

MANILA, Philippines -- The latest weight-loss craze sweeping fad-loving Japan has made Japanese women go bananas over Philippine bananas.

The Philippine government is cashing in on the popularity of bananas as it is seeing record-high consumption of the fruit in Japan, where supermarkets have been reporting banana shortages lately, the Tourism department said recently.

No country comes close to the Philippines when it comes to bananas. Thanks to the Morning Banana Diet, the Department of Tourism has disclosed that the Philippines is now the top exporter of bananas to Japan, providing 862,000 tons or 91.4 percent of the banana needs of the world’s second biggest economy.

In 2007, the Philippines' banana exports to Japan were valued at around $400 million, the DOT said.

Other Asian countries such as Malaysia and Taiwan also export bananas to Japan but in small quantities.

DOT Team Japan Head Benito Bengzon Jr. said Philippine bananas were considered the best and commanded a higher price.

“The Philippine banana is very popular here in Japan despite its high cost,” Bengzon said.

Another Tourism official said Japanese women who want to lose weight associate quality bananas with the Philippines.

Tourism Undersecretary Eduardo Jarque Jr. said they were told that Japanese consumers ask for “Philippine bananas” when they buy the fruit.

“It's really a big thing there. It's a diet craze. We went there last November and we saw a lot of women peeling and eating bananas even in their cars,” Jarque told the Philippine Daily Inquirer in a phone interview.

“They associate it with the Philippines. They equate it with the tropics. They ask for bananas from Philippines because it is the best. It has no blemishes and it's attractive,” he added.

The diet, which was promoted in social networking sites and exploded last year, has become so popular, it has spawned books, testimonials from Japanese actors, and a television show. The diet craze was invented by a pharmacist for her overweight husband, media reports in Japan said.

Followers of the Morning Banana Diet can eat as many bananas as they want and room temperature water for breakfast.

Under this diet regimen, they can eat anything they want for lunch and dinner, which has to be eaten by 8 p.m. They also have to go to bed before midnight.

Jarque said he was optimistic that the Philippines will retain its powerful hold on the banana market in Japan even if the Morning Banana Diet has died down.

Bananas, he noted, fit into the Japanese society's penchant for healthy living. “They are believers of fruits and vegetables,” he said. “It's a lifestyle.”

Tourism officials also said they hope that the banana fad would encourage Japanese women to visit the Philippines. Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said they hope to lure young, health-conscious women to visit the Philippines, where there is an abundance of tropical fruits.

“The demand for Philippine produce remains high because of the quality. Part of the country’s charm to visitors is its abundant supply of tropical fruits that are considered the best in the world,” the Tourism chief said.

“The promotion of our Philippine produce is part of the DOT’s strategy to lure Japanese visitors to visit the Philippines. High quality but low-cost products are a come-on to the choosy Japanese market,” Durano added.

Davao eyed as training center
By Marianne L. Saberon-Abalayan

THE Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines is eyeing Davao City as a possible regional training center as ABAP expands its program to discover talents in the countryside and boost the country's chances of winning that elusive Olympic gold.

ABAP national president Ricky Vargas made the announcement Thursday afternoon following a meeting with Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) Chairman William "Butch" Ramirez and other amateur boxing stakeholders in Mindanao led by North Cotabato Vice Gov. Manny Piñol.

"Even before we came here, we have already thought of Davao City as a possible site. but that is up to the stakeholders to decide. On our part, it's just a suggestion," Vargas told sports journalists during a press conference at Ahfat Restaurant.

Ramirez, who is Abap board of director for Region 11, said they will have yet to decide which is the best site to put up the regional training center considering that there are already an existing independent training gyms in other parts of the island.

"The boxing stakeholders in Mindanao will have to meet on this matter. We will soon come out with a decision," Ramirez said.

Vargas also asked the help of Piñol in promoting grassroots boxing development in the region and was amenable to the vice governor's proposal to put up a regional training center and to recognize the existing groups that have been promoting amateur boxing like the one in Panabo City under former congressman Tonyboy Floirendo.

"What could be the best recognition than putting up the regional training center in Davao," Vargas said, his remarks drawing an applause from some of those present in the Ahfat meeting.

The past ABAP leadership had reportedly refused to recognize the groups of Piñol and Floirendo, and that of Davao City Councilor Louie Villafuerte, who heads ABAP-Calinan and Davao City Councilor Edgar Ramos Ibuyan of ABAP-Davao.

Except for Floirendo, who was represented by Barangay Una boxing team manager Gene Rose Tecson, the rest of the boxing leaders were present during the meeting.

But then again, Vargas said that the training center could be somewhere else within Mindanao wherever the stakeholders think is best to put it.

He said they will also put up training sites in the Visayas and Central Luzon.

"We can concentrate the talents in these areas. But we will have to inspect the sites if they meet the requirements to produce boxers who can perform," Vargas said.

Vargas, along with his secretary general Patrick Gregorio, recently went to Baguio to see how the national team boxers were doing. Davao was their next stop.

"We are still getting our thoughts together. Chairman Ramirez is showing me around here and with Vice Governor Piñol being so supportive of amateur boxing, we could possibly do something for Davao. I'm looking forward to meet Floirendo in person," Vargas said.

Davao to celebrate first
Chinese New Year fete

Davao City will hold the 1st Chinese New Year Festival on January 26 to 31 after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 1 series 2009 which created the executive committee of the said festival.

The festival is the fruit of a united Chinese com-munity, working together with the local government.

Figures showed that Davao City has the biggest Chinatown in terms of land area and population. It also has the biggest concentration of Chinese families who have continuously shown the value of hardwork and unity.

The festival will be opened on January 24 with the highlight to be held on the eve of January 25 until 6 in the morning of the next day.

Activities include a motorcade of various stake-holders, Chinese families, sponsors, and supporters. A unity dance will also be performed as part of the Chinese culture and traditions. Chinese lanterns will also be lighted during the main event.

The public can also view and learn Chinese cultural heritage as an exhibition will be set up in the Museo Dabawenyo.

Shoppers can also buy Chinese goods from the long-stretch of Chinatown stores along Uyanguren Street which are open until midnight.

Nightly entertainment like Chinese dances and songs will be presented for the viewers to learn and appreciate their presentation.

On January 31, the Arch of Unity and Prosperity will be unveiled as the culmination of the weeklong festival.

Moreover, Chinese families will also provide community feeding in barangays within the China-town area.

This is one of the many ways that the Chinese families can show concern and social responsibility to the poor families in their community. PIA/Mai Gevera

Property dev’t to drive Davao power use

DAVAO CITY — A continuing property boom here will result in a 3.85% rise in electricity consumption that will lead on to a 4% average annual increase from 2009-2010, estimates from Davao Light and Power Co. showed.

The same report showed that this city consumed 1.081 billion kilowatt-hours (kWh) as of November last year, about 2.96% higher than the same period in 2007.

Davao Light also distributed a total of 1.4 billion kWh in the same period to the rest of its franchise area, consisting of Panabo City as well as the towns of Sto. Tomas, Carmen and Dujali in Davao del Norte.

In that same period, Davao Light bought 1.332 billion kWh from the National Power Corp. (Napocor) and 26.8 million kWh from its sister company Hedcor Inc.

The company also used its backup Bajada diesel power plant during power outages.

Because of the scope of its franchise area, Davao Light also signed a new supply agreement with sister firm Hedcor Inc. to help cover its requirements this year. Both companies are part of the giant Aboitiz Power Corp.

Under the agreement, Hedcor will start supplying Davao Light on August 1, 2009. The first phase of the agreement will mean additional 200 million kWh. On August 1, 2010, another 200 million kWh will be supplied to Davao Light.

The new power sources will come from Hedcor’s 42.5 megawatt hydroelectric power plant in Sibulan Sta. Cruz, Davao del Sur and its smaller plants in the city.

However, its plan to set up another hydroelectric plant in Tamugan has met opposition from the Davao City Water District, which is also plans to use Tamugan River for its expansion program.

Hedcor had earlier said it would not proceed with its Suawan power project due to low viability.

But one bigger source of power for the city will come from the Mt. Apo geothermal power plant which will be turned over this June to the Lopez-owned Energy Development Corp., formerly a subsidiary of government-owned Philippine National Oil Co. Alejandro V. Catacutan, company president, said the plan is to expand the capacity of the geothermal plant to 154 MW by 2012.

In an interview last month, Mr. Catacutan pointed out that the company has already started the design of the expansion program. At present, he said, the plant is churning out about 104 MW, or about 12% of the total power requirements of Mindanao. If it pursues the plan, Mr. Catacutan said the company is expected spend about $150 million on the expansion. — C. Q. Francisco

Waling: A Legend

The origins of the Waling-waling elude memory, yet its beauty continues to dazzle those that behold its splendid blossoms, even inspiring awe and wonder as to how such pulchritude came to be. The beautiful Waling-Waling abounds in Davao–on the lush slopes of Mount Apo, the grandfather of mountains.

Since my first post would coincide with the Kadayawan season in the Davao Region, Philippines, i thought it would be fitting to post a Legend which I wrote in 1998, published in Philippine Star in 2000 (they edited it too, shame), and published in the Philippine Orchid Society’s quarterly publication also in 2000. To the uninitiated, the Waling-waling orchid (Vanda sanderiana) is one of the symbols of the Davao Region, having been discovered in the foothills of Mount Apo by a scientific team commissioned by Sanders in 1882 (hence the scientific name Vanda sanderiana). I have reproduced the story in its entire, unadulterated, unedited glory, so pardon the grammatical errors and the prevalent cheesiness.

WALING
The legend of the Waling-Waling Orchid (Vanda sanderiana)
by Brian Dexter M. Medija

vanda sanderiana - waling-waling orchid - native to Davao City, Philippines
The origins of the Waling-waling elude memory, yet its beauty continues to dazzle those that behold its splendid blossoms, even inspiring awe and wonder as to how such pulchritude came to be. The beautiful Waling-Waling abounds in Davao–on the lush slopes of Mount Apo, the grandfather of mountains.

On the banks of the upper Daba-daba, whose waters meander from the northwest bukids, a people headed by brawny Datu Musukul have set up village, called Dayaw. Musukul’s wife, Waling, gave brightness and beauty to the village.

The sun bled the Apo’s swollen brow, ducking silently behind the old mountain. Little children chased each other while the women shared laughs under the trees. The village’s men gathered for tuba to welcome the closing of another day of hardwork, having tied their kabaws or having brought home the day’s catch. Joyful sounds filled the air in the peaceful balangay.

Then suddenly, like thunder to a sunny day, a man’s loud shriek reechoed in the fields, and the laughs died into silence. A baffling scene greeted their eyes: a rushing horse driven by a man who went out hunting but brought with him not a baboy-halas or usa, but a man hanging limply on his horse.

A strange frenzy caught the village like a fever....

Exhumation at Wireless cemetery starts next month
BY DIANA LHYD SUELTO
Mindanao Daily Mirror
January 09, 2009

The exhumation of the dead buried at the Wireless public cemetery will start next month in preparation for the construction of the city’s first public crematorium and columbarium which would be built on the site.

Speaking to reporters in yesterday’s I-Speak at the conference room of City Hall, Jose Elmario Guintadcan, the newly installed City Economic Enterprise manager, said the ground preparation for the construction of the city’s crematorium and columbarium will go full swing on February 27 after the exhumation is completed.

Guintadcan said the recently completed 18-day census tagging found that the number of those buried at the cemetery totaled almost 8,000.

Guintadcan said the exhumation would be the most tedious part of the process because they have to make sure the exhumed bones are properly bagged and tagged.

The bones of the deceased would be placed in a plastic bag and would be properly tagged and stored, awaiting their respective families’ action.

The city would also provide a repository for the bones so no disrespect would be felt by the families of those exhumed.

Guintadcan said the exhumation will be done in an honorable manner so that the families would not have any ill feeling towards the city government.

The exhumed bones would also be given priority in the columbarium that would be built, but families would still have to pay a minimal fee for use of it.

A columbarium is a vault with niches for urns containing ashes of the dead.

Guintadcan said families would also have the option of getting the bones of their departed loved ones and burying them somewhere else.

Burial at the Wireless cemetery has been stopped and those who want to bury their dead are being advised to go to the Maa public cemetery instead.

Guintadcan said after the exhumation process, the area will be bulldozed and flattened to prepare it for the building of the crematorium and columbarium.

He said the initial budget allocated by the city government for the project is P25 million.

There is still no building plan for the crematorium and columbarium but Guintadcan said it will be patterned after the Loyola, Marikina, and Pasay crematoriums.

Weeklong festivities to mark Chinese New Year
By Yas D. Ocampo
Mindanao Times (http://www.mindanaotimes.com.ph/story.php?id=23558)

The city will celebrate the Chinese New Year with a week-long festival on January 24 – 31 culminating with the unveiling of the Chinatown arc in Ramon Magsaysay Street. The city’s celebration will be unique since firecrackers, a Chinese tradition to ward off bad luck, are prohibited in the city.

Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered the creation of an executive committee of the 1st Davao Chinese New Year Festival through executive order number 1 series of 2009.

Oscar Casaysay, chair of the publications committee, told reporters during yesterday’s I-Speak that the executive committee is set to meet today to iron out the details of the week-long celebration. The mayor’s office will also submit its request to president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to declare January 26 as a special holiday.

The proposed budget that would come from the city’s Chinatown Development Council is pegged at P1.7 million and may be augmented by sponsorships from the private sector, according to the executive order.
New City Commercial Center has committed to the celebration’s feeding program to urban poor barangays within Chinatown, Casaysay said.
Unity and lion dances, cultural programs, motorcades, short film and documentary screenings, are among the events lined up for the celebration.
Aside from these, night markets along Magsaysay and Bangoy Streets have been planned.

A major plan for the event will be the countdown starting on the eve of the Chinese New Year that will last until 2 a.m., according to Casaysay.
Duterte and the Chinese community will launch The Ark of Unity and Prosperity on the 31st.

Chinatown covers the area bounded by Magsaysay Avenue, Monteverde Avenue, Sta. Ana Avenue, and Leon Garcia Street.
2009 is the Year of the Ox.
