I think the C.M Recto & Magsaysay Ave. much wider kay pa abot nimo dapit sa NCCC piot na kalsada but design-wise the 2nd arch are more impressive... 2 arch down 3 more to go!:cheers:

Dabawenyos could only view the fireworks display on a wide-screen live from China when the clock strikes midnight.

Festival secretariat chair Patricia Melizza Ruivivar said Chinese Dabawenyos initially proposed a fireworks display in the city but Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte stood firm on the firecracker ban.

"Pwede naman but not within the jurisdiction of Davao City. Like what was done during the Asean Tourism Forum, the firecrackers were flown to Butuan, transported to Panabo and carried through a ferry to Samal. Kung meron mang ganun, it would be a private initiative. Davao City remains firecracker-free," Ruivivar said.

Ruivivar was quoted on a local television news last Thursday as saying “a fireworks display will form part of the celebration. There will be, but only onscreen.”

A street concert during the eve of the Chinese New Year will make way for the countdown.

"Meron din drum beating performances and the fireworks will be shown live complete with sounds. They aim to create an experience na parang andun din kayo. Kita at rinig lahat," Ruivivar said.

Aside from the night market, the festival will also include a free showing of Chinese films focusing mainly on history and culture.

"We have an alternative celebration. This is the most unique kasi nga walang fireworks talaga. Our guests include the Consul General of China and Ambassador Alfredo Yuchengco who promised to fund the 3rd Chinatown arc," Ruivivar said.

She added that a lavish celebration is fitting since Davao can pride itself for having the largest Chinatown area in the Philippines, dwarfing even the renowned Binondo in Manila.

malaki talaga ang davao chinatown at dense ang mga buildings especially sa monteverde area. kumpleto din doon from schools, churches, malls, hotels, etc. in fact chinatown is bigger than the entire city proper of digos, excluding residential areas. inside chinatown area merong 2 major avenues, both around 1.34 kilometer in length, sta. ana and ramon magsaysay avenues. with that you can imagine how big it really is.

Vice Mayor Inday Sara Duterte has just finished her formal calendar pictorial session with Rhonson in our studio, so I immediately stepped in and asked if she doesn't mind doing "kikay" shots with me. She easily obliged and gave me playful poses, so different from her no-nonsense persona.

This has been the second time we did a pictorial with her. The first was before she became Vice Mayor, when Rhonson did her cover photo for Cebu's Zee Magazine, and I interviewed her for the cover story.

Inday's middle name is Zimmerman, her married name is Carpio. Her husband, Mansy Carpio, is a lawyer.

Beneath the tough exterior of our beloved Mayor's daughter, the youthful and carefree character still remains underneath. Although her rebellious days were over (she sports tattoos on her legs and back, and used to drive her big bike around the city with her Dad), her strength and tenacity has helped her transition into a tough leader that she is now.

I told her to play with the camera and pretend she was a model, and she gave me various fun poses.

City administrator Wendel Avisado yesterday gave assurance that all projects included in the proposed P2-billion loan from the Land Bank of the Philippines will be finished before Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ends his third and final term.

“The line up of projects will be done when his term ends next year,” Avisado told the Mirror.

Duterte had earlier said he lined up the projects to enable the people of Davao City to enjoy the taxes they are paying.”

It’s the people’s money and I want them to reap what they sow in their taxes. After all, it is their money,” Duterte had said.

The projects include the final phase of the city’s traffic signalization program, a sanitary landfill, urban housing, road networks, engineering equipment, and the crematorium.The traffic signalization will feature state-of-the-art closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras that will be installed in all traffic intersections with traffic lights.The CCTV will also help the city in its peace and order drive as it can monitor movement of lawless elements on the streets.Duterte said the urban housing program will help the homeless and deserving residents of the city stay in houses they can call their own.T

malaki talaga ang davao chinatown at dense ang mga buildings especially sa monteverde area. kumpleto din doon from schools, churches, malls, hotels, etc. in fact chinatown is bigger than the entire city proper of digos, excluding residential areas. inside chinatown area merong 2 major avenues, both around 1.34 kilometer in length, sta. ana and ramon magsaysay avenues. with that you can imagine how big it really is.

Just like my Cotabateño friend would say, "GSC's urban sprawl is only as big as Davao's chinatown and Agdao area. This is only his opinion and I just smiled everytime he would say this - of course I had my own thoughts about it which I just kept to myself. No offence meant for our neighbor GSC! :)

No specific mention about it Shak but I guess with the 2 billion loan, it's easy to assume budget for the terminals are included. I am only speculating here though....

Sa akong tan-aw, they will augment the routes that serve as feeders to the three terminals so it would be less headache. There might be some hiccups during initial implementation and that is to be expected.

dyan papasok ang mga feeder buses. from the 3 terminals may mga buses na malilit na papasok sa downtown area. in other countries, free pa nga ang fare sa mga feeder buses. basta maganda ang nakikita kong positive effect ng 3 terminals kay sa negative.

Ikeda: Davao's new golf wonder

FILIPINO-Japanese Chihiro "Chichang" Ikeda is your typical teenager. She loves to play video games at the mall, listens to music with her iPod and keeps herself busy with her cellular phone.

On the golf course, the 17-year-old Ikeda is extraordinary; a champion golfer who is a monster off the tee and one who never gets tired of winning.

This girl from Davao City is a gem, a prized shotmaker who represents the future of Philippine golf.

And if the Philippines has Manny Pacquiao putting on a sizzling show atop the ring and blitzing past his opponents in 2008, Davao has Ikeda torching the course and humbling her rivals.

It was one phenomenal season for Ikeda, who captured five crowns, including the 46th RP Ladies Amateur Open title that easily made her the girl to watch in Philippine golf from now on and for a long period of time.

In winning the RP Ladies Open, Ikeda had to rally from three shots down in a show of determination from a young girl aiming to make a name for herself in golf.

Born to a Japanese father and a Filipina mother, the chubby Ikeda also ruled the DHL-WWWExpress Amateur, the Sabah Amateur, Thailand Junior Open and the Singapore Junior Championship in a scintillating performance that even top Filipino golfer Frankie Miñoza had nothing but praises for the young girl from Davao.

Ikeda could have made it six if not for a final hole mishap in the Southern Ladies Open in Bacolod where she three-putted to let the title slip from her hands.

But, with all the accomplishment she had in the previous year, Ikeda is not about to stop seeking for more honors.

This early, she is set to defend her title when the 47th RP Ladies Amateur Open Golf Championships which fires off from Jan. 14-16 at the Manila Southwoods Golf and Country Club in Carmona, Cavite.

"I'll be back to defend my crown," the chubby Ikeda said with a smile when she sat down for an interview with Sun.Star Davao just recently. She spent the holidays in Davao with her father Osamo.

Ikeda left for Manila last Jan. 5 with one mission in mind and that is to defend her RP Ladies Amateur Open title against an army of tough challengers, including foreign competitors.

Barely five-feet tall, Ikeda is a giant whenever she's in the fairways. She always comes out on top and is a power hitter, sending her drives up to 250 to 300 yards.

Imee Garcia, a local golfing champion and Ikeda's friend, recalls one practice round in Cagayan de Oro when the girl sent her ball on the green with just one shot on a par-4 hole.

Ikeda had also upstaged the country's ace golfers Frankie Miñoza and Robert Pactolerin once when they were paired together in the opening round of The Country Club Invitational early last year. Her outstanding play--an even-par 70--had Miñoza shaking his head in admiration to the girl.

"When I met her at a younger age, I saw the huge potential in her. I was bragging to everyone how amazing she is. I knew she would go places someday," Garcia said of Ikeda.

"A few years ago, I asked permission from her dad if I could bring her Cagayan de Oro to compete in the Southern Ladies Open and he said yes. During the practice round, in a par-4 she hit the green in one shot," Garcia added.

Ikeda is a member of the ICTSI stable, now the country's hottest golfing association full of talented young shotmakers.

But, with all her accomplishment, Ikeda remains to be a humble girl.
And this maker her special.

"She is such a darling. She is a very shy person. She always smiles, very generous and kind. I'm very proud of her and I'm happy for her," Garcia said.

Days from now, Ikeda will be back in the fairways again as she eyes another memorable season beginning with the RP Ladies Amateur Open.

With her style of play and big fighting heart, there's no doubt Ikeda will rake in more honors not only for Davao but the country as well.

I think stiff lang masyado ang law natin against fireworks display...sana they will allow it in instances like this...or, maski ang local government na maginitiate ng fireworks display, then tan-aw na lang mga tao.

DAVAO CITY, Philippines—Outland Adventure or Project Challenge Foundation in Barangay Bugac, Talomo district here has become synonymous to rope courses and adventure team-building programs over the past eight years.

But in October last year, it became the operator of Asia’s longest and fastest zip line.

‘The Accelerator’

At 200 hundred feet above ground, “The Accelerator” stretches a kilometer in length, sending course participants flying at 100 kilometers per hour.

Prior to the construction of the zip line here, the one operated by Samui Fun Park in Koh Samui in Thailand used to be Asia’s longest at 730 meters.

According to Matthew McNeil, Project Challenge founder, the zip line is Outland Adventure’s “stand alone entity,” which took two years to build.

Despite its length, it remains safe to use because of the redundant safety system set in place, he said.

The system has been designed for optimum safety, where riders are required to wear two harnesses, McNeil added. Cables and pulleys on both the two-line traverse and zip line were also doubled in case one snaps off.

He said they had to use a three-break system (primary, secondary and fail safe) at the end of the zip line to further reduce risks.

“The cables and the other contraptions are Petzl, which are made in France, and can carry multiple weights in tons,” he explained.

In case of any eventuality, he said, they have well-trained personnel from the United States to respond.

“It’s great for Davao,” McNeil said. “We are not competing with Sabros (another zip line facility in Davao del Sur) and Eden (in Toril district here) with its skyride, but it is an opportunity for Davao City to emerge as an adventure-based destination.”

For those who want to try the zip line, McNeil said, they would first have to undergo a 15-minute orientation.

Then they walk to a platform situated on top of the highest point of the Outland area, which is overlooking the city, where they would be made to wear harnesses.

Greater purpose

The journey to the other end of the zip line takes only a few seconds. But in those seconds, anxiety loses out to exhilaration, according to those who have tried it.

Aside from providing a form of entertainment, McNeil said the Outland Adventure concept was born out of concern for the growing number of youth in the city, who had become idle or were involved in illegal activities.

“I was walking along Tancontian Street where the old clinic (Mercy Maternity) was and I saw some youth who were not doing anything,” he said. “I read somewhere that 60 percent of the country’s population is below the age of 25 ... it was something to be concerned about.”

He said he immediately thought of marrying the ropes course program he underwent in the United States 20 years ago to a values-formation activity, and came out with the Outland Adventure concept.

Attempts to establish the facility failed at first time, until he met the late Al Aboitiz.

During their meeting, McNeil said, Aboitiz was really enthusiastic when he told him about the ropes course program he was planning.

Aboitiz agreed that the Davao Light and Power Co., which his family owns, would finance the whole project, while businessman Hans Gaisano provided the 17-hectare property in Barangay Bugac.

Training program

Since then, the electric distribution company would always sponsor training programs for topnotch high school students at the facility.

“In the past four years, we accommodated more than 80 public high schools,” McNeil said.

“It is now financially sustainable,” he said, adding that Outdoor Adventure’s income usually comes from big companies that pay P950 to P1,250 per person for the use of the facility.

Prior to the construction of the zip line here, the one operated by Samui Fun Park in Koh Samui in Thailand used to be Asia’s longest at 730 meters.

According to Matthew McNeil, Project Challenge founder, the zip line is Outland Adventure’s “stand alone entity,” which took two years to build.

Despite its length, it remains safe to use because of the redundant safety system set in place, he said.

The system has been designed for optimum safety, where riders are required to wear two harnesses, McNeil added. Cables and pulleys on both the two-line traverse and zip line were also doubled in case one snaps off.

He said they had to use a three-break system (primary, secondary and fail safe) at the end of the zip line to further reduce risks.

“The cables and the other contraptions are Petzl, which are made in France, and can carry multiple weights in tons,” he explained.

In case of any eventuality, he said, they have well-trained personnel from the United States to respond.

“It’s great for Davao,” McNeil said. “We are not competing with Sabros (another zip line facility in Davao del Sur) and Eden (in Toril district here) with its skyride, but it is an opportunity for Davao City to emerge as an adventure-based destination.”

For those who want to try the zip line, McNeil said, they would first have to undergo a 15-minute orientation.

Then they walk to a platform situated on top of the highest point of the Outland area, which is overlooking the city, where they would be made to wear harnesses.

The one reason I could think of why there's only 13 in DC is because the neighboring cities have 2 or more outlets each..e.g. Digos has one existing and one u/c, Panabo has two and Tagum has 2 existing with one u/c. People in these cities don't have to come down to DC to have a bite of chickenjoy but enjoy it in their own backyard. Same is true with Mcdo as far as Tagum and Digos are concerned.

Funny coz I remember once when I was at Bluegre Landco on one Sunday afternoon, a caucasian couple came up to me while reading the dailies and asked where they could find a Starbucks. yup and underpass going to RCC widening na wala pa hinuon cemented ang outer lanes they evne relocated electric posts to accomodate the 6-lanes :cheers:

Agree, there's no dearth of customers for highend shops and restos in Davao. Businesses should just have to device better marketing plans to tap the market. It's tough, really, really tough.

It's no brainer why the market is hard to please. Being an agriculture-based economy, it's no surprise why food is so inexpensive. We can eat the best food there is without making a big hole in our pockets so if you set up a nice resto and put high prices on your food then you lose....simple as that...

That's why I was like ...what? Mamay Road is really so tiny though 4-lanes. Well, the good thing is the Diversion road is now almost 6 lanes end to end. Happy na ako dyan...:)
