yeah that's true, i guess that's the "price" we have to pay for the davao tuna we get here... btw, have you already tried "salmon" piccata? that's a good substitute, and by doing so, you're supporting your country's fishing industry

Filipinos have long embraced the tradition in celebrating Chinese New Year. This is because even before the arrival of Islam and the occupation of the Spaniards, the early Chinese were already trading goods and commodities with our ancestors. History books would tell us that during the Qin and Tang dynasties, China was already trading with the Filipinos and referred the archipelago as “Chin Chou” (Isles of Gold). Even much earlier in history, perhaps as early as 4,000 to 2,000 B.C., groups from Yunnan Plateau in China arrived in the Philippines on board “balangays” (large wooden boats) and crossed through land bridges from Taiwan.

Through years of contact and commerce, the Chinese inter-married with the locals and have become part of the local community. Their business acumen and innate gift of being able to easily network with other people have made them strong and influential members of the Philippine society.
In Davao City, one of the many places in the country where the Filipino-Chinese community plays a vital role in the local economy, the celebration of the Chinese New Year is one of its highly anticipated events for its color and vibrancy. Not only do we get to see various ornamentations, performances, lucky charms as well as energetic dragon and lion dances that come with the celebration, we also get to sample tasty Chinese delicacies that are supposed to bring luck to those who sample them.
This year, through Executive Order No. 01, series of 2009, City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte ordered the creation the city’s first ever Davao Chinese New Year Festival. This will further promote the development of the Chinatown, covering R. Magsaysay Avenue, Monteverde Avenue, Sta. Ana Avenue and Leon Garcia Street, as one of the major historical, economic and cultural centers of the city.
With the theme “Davao Chinese Communities: Rekindling the Past, Touching the Future,” the festival will commence on 24 January with a motorcade to drum up the festivities, followed by a thanksgiving mass at Sta. Ana Church. Dance of Unity performances from various schools and cultural groups will be held at Magsaysay Park. The simultaneous lighting of Chinese lanterns, night market opening along R. Magsaysay Avenue, nightly screening of Chinese movies, and community dinner are some of the highlights of the opening night.
On January 25, there will be a Chinese New Year Grand Parade from City Hall to Chinatown with floats representing the Year of the Ox, Float of Prosperity, Float of Friendship, Float of Longevity and Float of Unity. There will also be a Dance of Prosperity street dancing by various Chinese Schools from the Villa Abrille arch to Magsaysay Park. By nighttime, there will be entertainment at the night market, virtual fireworks on video, and balloon and confetti drop.
On Day 3 of the festivities, Chinese temples will be opened to public visits, such as Lon Wa in Cabaguio Avenue, Taoist Temple in Palm Village, Maria Temple in Quirino Avenue, and other Chinese temples in Bo. Obrero and Juna Subdivision. Museo Dabawenyo will also hold the “TSINA: Chinese Culture and Heritage” exhibit. The day will end with the recognition of support of various institutions, organizations, individuals and sponsors, and the SAMADHI concert, featuring Davao artists and performers. On January 31, the weeklong festival will finally conclude with the inauguration of the Unity Arch near Magsaysay Park to be headed by the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China and the City Mayor.

Ay, Quile! playdates set

DESPITE the announcement of some City Hall’s drumbeaters that Ay, Quilê! will be included in the March 16 Araw ng Dabaw festivity, the stage play will actually come early.

The play was initially set on Feb. 5 to 8. But it was moved to March.
In yesterday’s I-Speak forum, writer Fe Misa Ayala said the play is set on Feb. 4 and March 2 (7:00 pm) and Feb. 5 and March 3 and 5 (4:00 pm, matinee; 7:30 pm, gala). All shows will be held at CAP Auditorium.
Ayala, the daughter of the titular character Quile, is inviting Davaoeños to watch the musical which she co-wrote with Hermie Acosta Uy. The lyricist-songwriter tandem previously teamed up in producing hits like Miss Kita kung Krismas and Himaya, songs that will also appear in the musical.
Ay, Quilê! tells the story of Cresencia Rey in the different time periods that she was able to live in - the last years of Hispanic rule, the American Period, World War II in the Philippines, and the post-war years.
“I am inviting you to watch the for three reasons,” Ayala said. “First is for entertainment. Second is for you to help the Department of Social Welfare’s Home for young girls and women.”
The third reason, she said, is to inspire other producers of theatrical productions in Davao to begin staging their own plays.
Gauss Obenza, the show’s production manager, said they will be touring schools all over the city to invite students and teachers to watch the show at the CAP Auditorium.
Ay, Quilê!, to be directed by playwright Nestor Horfilla, features Davaoeño artists such as Verni Gonzales, George Misa, Bayang Barrios, Jameelon Rivera, and Chad Borja.

Planners bullish on Davao economy amid fiscal slump
Mindanao Daily Mirror
BY JUDY QUIROS

The growth of some industry sectors in the Davao Region last year has led economic planners to remain optimistic this year as the world fights a waning economy.

National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) 11 regional director Maria Lourdes Lim at the “Kapihan sa PIA” yesterday said they are optimistic that Davao Region’s economy will fare well this year in light of the growth posted particularly in the tourism, exports, investment, agriculture, housing or property development and services sectors last year against previous year.

Lim singled out the tourism sector, which generated 10.9 percent growth in terms of arrivals to 648,439 million from first to third quarter in 2008 against the 584,792 million same periods in 2007.

Investments registered with the Board of Investments also grew to P3.2 billion in 2008 in three quarters from P3.1 billion in 2007, data provided by NEDA 11 showed.

However, worth of investments registered with the Securities and Exchange (SEC) Davao extension office dropped P159.5 million in 2008 from P200.5 million in 2007 indicating a 20.5 percent decline.

Lim said the higher production of major crops, poultry and fisheries except for livestock in 2008 compared to 2007 also provides an avenue for economic growth in the agriculture sector this year.

The gross regional domestic product (GRDP) of Davao Region posted 6.7 percent growth rate in 2007 surpassing the 5.1 percent target.

Davao Region’s GRDP growth rate for 2008 targeted at 5.5 percent is currently being evaluated, NEDA said.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) 11 planning officer, Dante Muyco joined Lim saying that their positive outlook this year is bolstered by the growth achieved by the above-mentioned sectors.

He, however, clarified there is a need to double efforts to improve the economy to cushion the impact of the global economic slowdown.

“Our thrust is to strengthen local markets provide good and better services to visitors and direct our efforts to capture Asian markets also in addition to existing traditional markets,” Lim said.

The NEDA data showed that as of the middle of 2008, no negative impact was felt on exports, which increased by 30 percent compared to 2007, while tourism improved by 11 percent, inflation declined starting the 3rd quarter and employment rate slightly improved.

In preparation for the effects of the global recession, government economic planners have already set up contingency plans, Lim said.

Government has seen the financial crisis to trigger a drop in exports due to slower investment and consumption in other countries.

Deployment of overseas Filipino workers and slowdown of remittances are also seen.

Tourism is also likely to slowdown in terms of revenue as people opt to do away with spending for vacations or travels and business process outsourcing may experience a slight cooling down. With reports from Diana Lhyd Suelto

BASK on the warm embers of time. Cherish the flames of romance. Feel the love with OPM’s best crooners – Jun Polistico, Anthony Castelo and Victor Wood in The Greatest Balladeers.

Hear them sing the songs of yesteryears, including the ballads they made popular like Castelo’s Ang Babaing Hinugot sa Aking Tadyang, Apoy, Balatkayo, Hahanapin ko, Nang Dahil sa Pag-ibig, Kaibigan and Unang Halik; Polistico’s Mahawin Man ang Ulap, Sanay’s Maghintay ang Walang Hanggang and Sanay’s Wala Nang Wakas; and Wood’s Crying Time, Paper Roses and The Great Pretenders.

The Gratest Balladeers is one trip down memory lane you should not miss.
Davao City will be special for these Greatest Balladeers as they will be serenading Davaoeños right on Valentine’s Day, February 14, a Saturday, 8pm at CAP Auditorium.

Global crisis still unfelt in Davao Region
By Jeane Duron-Abangan

Davao City (17 January) -- Effects of the global financial crisis have not been felt in Davao Region, National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) XI Regional Director Maria Lourdes D. Lim revealed.

Guesting in Kapihan sa PIA (Philippine Information Agency), Lim said exports performance of the region even increased by 30 percent in the middle of 2008 when rich economies of the world began economically reeling due to the financial meltdown.

The agriculture sector fueled the export performance of the region last year while the tourism sector posted a favorable performance of 11 percent increase in tourist arrivals and receipts. full story (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p090117.htm&no=03)

Davao region outlook still optimistic
By Mai Gevera

Davao City (17 January) -- National Economic and Development Authority regional director Maria Lourdes Lim bared the positive outlook of the Davao region for year 2009.

Last year's data showed that despite the global financial crisis, tourism still improved by 11 percent. There was a 10 percent increase of tourist arrivals and tourist receipts fromm 2007 to 2008.

Also, the region should expect exports, most agricultural commodities to remain stable, especially for bananas, mango and abaca. These are the crops which posted a significant increase of production and export in the past year. The Department of Agriculture still sees these crops to maintain its growth this year.

NEDA XI also sees agricultural production, especially for export commodities, will likely continue to improve to meet demand from traditional and new markets.

The average inflation rate is also seen to decline as a result of stable food and oil prices. full story (http://www.pia.gov.ph/?m=12&r=&y=&mo=&fi=p090117.htm&no=02)

Crematorium to open this year: councilor
Friday, January 16, 2009

A LOCAL government-owned crematorium is set to operate this year, said Councilor Nilo Abellera in Wednesday's City Council Media Hour at the Davao City Hall.

Two crematoriums will be constructed at the Wireless Cemetery, which is seen to solve the problem of having to keep land for the dead, Abellera said.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Abellera first pushed for the construction of a crematorium in a privilege speech in July last year. He sees many benefits for the city in having a crematorium. Two of which, he added, are cost-saving and space-saving.

The councilor said it would also help poor families lessen the cost of burying their departed loved ones. Cremation, he added, is the less-expensive alternative since memorial lots are becoming more expensive.

Abellera said the crematorium would remove the local government's burden of looking for new burial sites to ease the crowding of tombs in local cemeteries.

The proposed crematorium will use the high-heat technology, which could also be used to incinerate livestock affected by dangerous diseases, confiscated pirated disks from raids, dangerous substances, pathological wastes, and exhumed remains from old graves, among others, Abellera said.

Abellera intends to present a proposal for the project in a week's time.

Although no particular date has been set for the start of the project, the councilor said Mayor Rodrigo Duterte wanted the project to be started and finished this year. (Candice Boiser and Jade Zaldivar, AdDU interns)

Our dumpsite

STUDENTS looking for a sob story and pitiful photos of soot-covered children at the city's dumpsite for their social science classes will have to look somewhere else.

The city mayor has been mentioning it in his television program on Sundays, the city's sanitary landfill is almost done and the city can even become the only highly-urbanized city to have a functioning landfill.

It's something the city can be proud of, he once said.

Having seen the dumpsite in 2004 just before it was converted into a restricted dump the following year, it was hard to believe how a place designed for garbage could make anyone proud.

But that the dumpsite is also a regular part of the itinerary of visiting employees and officials of other local government units should make you wonder what's in there that are bringing in excursionists...And so we went on an excursion as well and found...

Nothing. Not a single garbage. That's what was at the old dumpsite in New Carmen. What was once covered with garbage and stank to high heavens is now a rolling terrain of vetiver grass and young mahogany and fruit tree seedlings.

Had the engineer of the landfill contractor not said the hill we were facing used to be the old dumpsite, I wouldn't have realized that we were in the same place as I was almost five years ago. Down the hill was the almost-finished sanitary landfill facility.

Constructed at P261 million, it is designed to contain 1.2-million cubic meters of residual garbage -- or garbage that can no longer be recycled -- in five to eight years, said Engineer Eliza Guimbaolibot of the IPM Construction, a Manila-based company specializing in sanitary landfills.

The end-design, she said, will include a retention pond for leachates or the garbage juice. No treatment plant, she said, since the design and contract they bidded for doesn't include that. Just the retention pond. But it seems like with time, even leachate or garbage juice can be recycled for as long as it is not allowed to freely pour down water sources,

"We used to water the vetiver glass with the leachate, the growth was good," she said.

Vetiver or Chrysopogon zizanioides is most often used for erosion control because its roots grow downward, up to even six meters down, and not in horizontal mats like all other grasses. Because of its downward root system that digs deep into the soil, it holds the topsoil together. Thus vetiver is used as a stabilizing hedge for stream banks, terraces, and rice paddies.

With all those vetivers growing, fragrant essential oil can also be harvested, if anyone would want to. Vetiver oil is in 90 percent of all western perfumes, an entry from Wikipedia says.

What used to be a mountain of garbage is now a field of vetivers with blue PVC pipes sticking out from the ground.

As one gets a whiff of a leaking gas stove, you are reminded never to light up for a smoke.

"There was a worker here who lit a cigarette, he burned his brow," Engineer Guimbaolibot said. The reason, those blue pipes sticking out from the ground are actually releasing methane gas. Government is not utilizing the free cooking gas, these are just released to the air.

It's true, the project is 90-percent completed, but it's taking longer than it should. The reason: Davao's regular rains. There are days when they cannot work because their equipment couldn't move around. But they expect the project to be completed within two to three months.

In the meantime, the city's garbage is being thrown at a temporary dumpsite in Barangay Lacson, Calinan district.

It's a vast private property owned by the family of Cecilio "Boy" Manaois. It's around 36 hectares of rolling terrain that has a guardhouse that only allows authorized persons to enter.

Once you reach the dumpsite, it's a scene straight out of "Wall-E" and not Payatas; dump trucks rumbling down the well-graded dirt roads, the air filled with smoke from the garbage, and very few people milling sifting through the rolling terrain of garbage.

Among the men is a father of five, who maintains a shack in the clump of shacks in the dumpsite.

"That's our sleeping quarters. We don't call it a house since we have our houses outside the dumpsite," he said. His family is at New Carmen, he said, and he goes home every weekend.

Only the men who have passed background check and approval by the landowner are allowed inside. Each scavenger has a record of sorts. No one else can enter and scavenge. Also, no family member is allowed inside, no wives, no children. Only full-grown men.

It's more organized, he said, but they're earning less now.

"The garbage dumpsite owner's buying price is very low. Like scrap bronze, which we could sell at P300 per kilo in the New Carmen dumpsite before is only bought for P90-P100 per kilo here," he said. "The landowner is the one who sets the price."

Scrap cartons are bought at P0.30 a kilo down from a maximum of P0.70 per kilo before. All other recyclable trash is bought at prices way below the price they were sold before.

All garbage recycled is sold off to the landowner, he said.

The man, who asked not to be named, added that they can no longer ask for "cash advance." That's not allowed.

In New Carmen, he said, when there was free enterprise, they had "suki" buyers who would allow them to get some cash advances. Not here, he said.

But that's part of the arrangement made with the City Government when it was looking for a temporary dumpsite. The area was offered to be used for free on condition that all the recyclables go to the landowner.

Monopoly? Yes, but then, there were no takers before. No one wanted the city's tons of garbage, except this landowner. Call it entrepreneurial.

Manong, whose children's ages range from 5 to 22, said there are 30 of them in their area and 15 more in an area farther off. He also estimates that at least 90 truckloads are dumped everyday.

Data from the city environment and natural resources office shows that the city collects 1,000 cubic meters of trash everyday using 10 compactor trucks with 18 cubic meter capacity each, three open dump trucks with 7 cubic meter capacity each, 40 ten-wheeler trucks with 14 cu. m. capacity, and eight six-wheeler trucks with 7 cubic meter capacity each.

Manong has been scavenging in New Carmen for five years before the dumpsite was transferred. Now he's in Lacson doing the same, and intends to move on and follow the garbage trail once it packs up and leaves for the new landfill.

That's his livelihood he said, and he still has a five-year-old child to feed. Anyway, even the prospect of a new landfill means garbage being sorted and recycled because only residual waste should be thrown into the landfill as it will cost hundreds of millions more to build another one.

In the meantime, the sanitary landfill project is a sight to behold. The mountain breeze reminding you of what it once was before it became a garbage dump -- a rolling terrain of greens. Just make sure you don't take a deep breath where the blue pipes are sticking out from the ground.

eversince nagsugod ang ban bai bernsky wala na gyud naga gamit ug firecrackers tanan sa davao city, walay exempted intsik, etc. apil gani tong asian tourism forum nga gi held sa davao, sa samal nila gipabuto ilang firecrackers. sa mga previous years, ang mga intsik naga adto sa samal or panabo para ilang i showcase ilang mga fireworks. this time, ang first festival sa chinatown, it's a 4 day celebration, ang culmination nila virtual fireworks ang himuon. naay live fireworks sa china ilang i beam sa mga big screens scattered sa chinatown, and speakers will simulate the booomms hahahaha. that will the first time in the phil, but of course naa silay option for the real fireworks either sa dagat bordering samal or sa samal mismo, and watch it sa may beach.

ingon pa ni mayor ok ra ilang virtual fireworks, ayaw lang palabihan ug pakusog kay basin ang mga speakers ang mangbuto. sobra pa unya sa bawang ang epekto.

FYI vertivers are type of grass that can hold soil to prevent erosion & siphons harmful elements/chemicals from soil poisoning ....

City to honor Chinese this weekend

Night Market will take center stage in the incoming Chinese New Year celebration along Uyanguren Street on January 24-26.

This was revealed by Oscar Casaysay, who leads organizers of the event.

“The security is already in placed to ensure the success of the event,” Casaysay told reporters during the weekly Tabak press conference along Royal Mandaya Hotel.

Casaysay said the big celebration may be comparable to the annual Kadayawan since it is also done to honor the Chinese community which plays a big role in the history and development of the city.

“It is time that we honor the contribution of the Chinese in the city” he said.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Hao, one of the organizers of the night market said goods at reasonable prices will be available for sale at the night market.

“The night market will be held from 6 pm. until 12 midnight,” Hao said.

Hao said Davaoeños should not miss the chance to attend the Chinese New celebration especially the night market since they have prepared interesting activities for the public.

“I invite everybody to take time to attend this special celebration,” he said.

raise their hands to greet the new year...

Major fruits, veges supplier sets up Davao consolidation center

DAVAO CITY, Jan. 19 (PNA) -- A leading supplier of fresh fruits and vegetables recently established a consolidation center here to ensure a steady supply of produce from Mindanao for major supermarkets in Metro Manila.

The new consolidation center of Agri Nurture Inc. (ANI) in the Sasa district of Davao will enable the company to meet the quality and volume requirements of its institutional buyers, including the SM Hypermart chain in Luzon, said Zavier Abella, ANI purchasing officer for fruits.

"This facility gives us a more direct link to growers in Mindanao," Abella said.

The fruits and vegetables are paid for upon delivery to the ANI consolidation center, and then shipped to the company's storage facility in Manila.

Abella said the consolidation center in Davao has already shipped lakatan banana from Kidapawan City and Shariff Kabunsuan, as well as solo papaya grown in Tupi, South Cotabato. ANI has also made trial shipments of assorted fruits such as rambutan, mangosteen, durian and mango.

The company signed an agreement with a grower of carabao variety mangoes, under which ANI will purchase a 50-hectare yield of mangoes for export. USAID's Growth with Equity in Mindanao (GEM) Program helped link ANI with the Northern Cotabato-based exporter and other local farmers.

"Local and foreign buyers have a high regard for fruits from Mindanao," Abella said, adding that ANI ships containers of mangoes from southern Mindanao twice a week to Singapore.

ANI is considering establishing additional consolidation centers in key production areas across the region. (PNA)

Davao City will hold the 1st Chinese New Year Festival on January 26 to 31 after Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order 1 series 2009 which created the executive committee of the said festival.

The festival is the fruit of a united Chinese community, working together with the local government.

Figures showed that Davao City has the biggest Chinatown in terms of land area and population. It also has the biggest concentration of Chinese families who have continuously shown the value of hardwork and unity.

The festival will be opened on January 24 with the highlight to be held on the eve of January 25 until 6 in the morning.

Activities include a motorcade of various stakeholders, Chinese families, sponsors, and supporters. A unity dance will also be performed as part of the Chinese culture and traditions. Chinese lanterns will also be lighted during the main event.

The public can also view and learn Chinese cultural heritage as an exhibition will be set up in the Museo Dabawenyo.

Shoppers can also buy Chinese goods from the long-stretch of Chinatown stores along Uyanguren Street which are open until midnight.

Nightly entertainment like Chinese dances and songs will be presented for the viewers to learn and appreciate their presentation.

On January 31, the Arch of Unity and Prosperity will be unveiled as the culmination of the weeklong festival.

Moreover, Chinese families will also provide community feeding in barangays within the Chinatown area.

This is one of the many ways that the Chinese families can show concern and social responsibility to the poor families in their community.

Hannah returns to Davao Wednesday

DAVAOEÑA Hannah Leah Pasudag, the Ms. Fitrum grand winner, is returning home tomorrow after winning the title in the hit afternoon show Wowowee.

“I’ll be going home but I’ll only stay (in Davao) for two days,” Hannah told Times last night in a phone interview.
Hannah, a native of Hagonoy in Davao del Sur, is the latest Davaoeña to shine on national TV.
Last Saturday, the girl who has a killer smile and made more alluring by a pair of dimples bested 25 other finalists in the first-ever beauty search held by Wowowee. She impressed the viewers and the panel of judges that included former Ms. Universe Gloria Diaz and actor Gabby Concepcion.
As part of her winnings, Hannah will now be a contract star of Star Magic, the managerial arm of giant broadcasting network ABS-CBN.
The five-foot-five morena beauty, also voted as Miss Telegenic in the competition, said there is no scheduled show yet during her homecoming this week.
“ Star Magic is planning for that (a show in Davao) in the future,” the Davaoeña said in vernacular. “I don’t know the itinerary yet (for the Davao homecoming this week).”
For viewers of ABS-CBN Davao, Hannah is popularly known as Hannah Banana, a former dancer of the weekely Kapamilya, Winner Ka.
“I thank ABS-CBN Davao for the break,” Hannah said.
She was given a break by the local Kapamilya Network in 2007 after joining in the Search for the Next White Castle Girl where she only ended in the Mindanao level.
Hannah is a veteran of beauty searches. Last year, she joined in Miss Bikini Philippines and Mr. & Ms. Photogenic Image Model Search, among others. But she wasn’ that lucky.
But the defeat did not discourage her from pursuing her dream.
“Now, ABS-CBN is giving me the biggest break,” said Hannah who dreams of working with Piolo Pascual.
Hannah is now co-hosting Wowowee with Willie Revillame, Pokwang, Mariel Rodriguez, Valerie Concepcion and RR Enriquez.
She said Star Magic’s Johnny Manahan is also planning to have her included in the Sunday variety show, ASAP.
Hannah said she will undergo various workshops such as acting and, perhaps, singing.
“I can dance but I can’t sing,” she said. “But I am trying to carry a tune.” The Davaoeña said she is very much willing to undergo trainings. “It will surely make me more confident... and beautiful.”
Hannah also credited NCCC for her success.
In 2006, she joined TeeNCCClub model search which developed her skills, not only in modeling, but also in other aspects. In the finals of that Davao search, she landed in the top-10 and won the two special awards: the Best in Photo and Ms. Close Up Smile.
Hannah said her victory is for her parents and three siblings, especially to her 17-year-old brother who is afflicted with hydrocephalus.
“I will use the (P500,000) winnings for him,” Hannah said who added that she will let her father and mother avail of her round-trip ticket to Singapore which was also part of the prizes that also include a brand new car.
Despite her current showbiz fame, Hannah said she is planning to pursue her education in the future.
Hannah, who finished her elementary and secondary years in government schools in Davao del Sur, was a third year nursing student of Holy Child Academy in Davao City before trying her luck in Manila in 2007.

Council approves Alson's Eden development
By Grace L. Plata

THE Davao City Council granted Alsons Development and Investment Corporation a Preliminary Approval and Location Clearance (PALC) for its Norfolk Place residential project in Barangay Eden in Toril.

The approval came amid controversies that the project will be built in an agro-ecotourism zone.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

However, Alson's representatives cleared that the project is not the usual subdivision type and is themed to be a nature park.

A minimum of 500 square meters is set for the lot buyers. Of this, only 10 percent can be used for the house building. The rest of the property must be developed into a tree, flower or vegetable garden. This would in turn be a part of an eco-tourism venture supported by the Department of Tourism (DOT).

Usually, parcels of land, which are to be turned into subdivisions or housings projects, need to be reclassified as residential zones before the developers can apply for a PALC. The PALC is also a requirement for the development permit, which is required before construction and selling of any type of property can begin.

The lot for the Norfolk project totals to 90,000 square meters.

DOT surpasses tourist arrival, receipt targets

THE Department of Tourism (DOT) in Southern Mindanao surpassed its target in terms of tourist arrivals and tourist receipts for the first nine months of 2008.

According to a report submitted by the DOT to the National Economic Development Authority (Neda) in Southern Mindanao, tourist arrivals in the Davao Region has increased by 10.9 percent compared to the same period in 2007.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

Maria Lourdes Lim, Neda-Southern Mindanao regional director, said tourist arrivals as of the third quarter in 2007 was placed at 584,792, while a total of 648,439 tourists were recorded during the same period in 2008.

Tourist receipts likewise increased by 10.9 percent. From P8.2 billion in 2007, it went up to P9.1 billion.

It was learned that DOT targets a 10 percent increase for both tourist arrivals and tourist receipts for the year.

"These figures were based on hotel occupancy rates in the region. It also shows that Davao City is still the favorite destination of tourists followed by the Island Garden City of Samal," Lim told reporters recently.

By category, Lim said 93 percent of the tourists who visited the region last year were domestic travelers. Of that number, six percent of which were foreigners and one percent, balikbayans.

She said the country with the most number of tourists of the region is the USA at 21 percent; shortly followed by Japan at 19 percent; South Korea, 10 percent; China, six percent; Australia, five percent; Canada, Singapore and Hong Kong, at three percent. (JGRS)

More investments to enter Davao Region this year
By Joy Romares-Sevilla

EIGHT sets of new investments are expected to push through in Davao region this year, according to the head of the Board of Investments (BOI).

These investments amount to P3.5 billion with a banana plantation project having the highest cost, said Gil Dureza, head of the BOI in Western, Southern and Central Mindanao, as he faced reporters in Tuesday's edition of the Business Forum at the Medispa at SM City Davao.

Arroyo Watch: Sun.Star blog on President Arroyo

"A foreign-based company and two local companies showed interest in investing in a banana plantation with a total of 3,400 hectares," Dureza said. "An average of P2 million per hectare is the cost of investment for a banana plantation."

Aside from this, Dureza cited other investments, including housing projects, mining, plastic recycling, hotel and retirement village, coffee processing, real estate development and photo editing.

He said these new investments were approved in December last year and are expected to be put up anytime this year.

Dureza said 18 firms registered with the BOI last year, of which 10 are located in Davao City with an investment cost of P1.5 billion; four in Davao del Sur with P338 million; three in Compostela Valley Province with P1.3 billion; and one in Davao del Norte with P10 million, making the investments total P3.2 billion as of December 2008.

In 2007, 12 firms registered with the BOI.

"What was exciting last year was the entry of three motorcycle manufacturing companies; two are registered in Davao City and the other in Davao del Norte," Dureza said.

These companies are the Huari Motorcycles Philippines and the Starway International Stock Co., both in Davao City, and the Ever Automotive Center Corp. in Davao del Norte.

As compared to the total investments in 2007, BOI was able to record a total of P7.7 billion worth of investments.

He said the investment value during the year is higher compared to last year. In 2007, BOI considered the entry of Hedcor as one of the biggest projects in the region with P2.8 billion worth of investments.

Goldilocks, Red Ribbon to continue expansion plans this year

CAKE AND pastry chains Goldilocks and Red Ribbon will proceed with their expansion plans this year despite the slowing economy, banking on Filipinos’ continued celebration of special occasions and the practice of bringing home small gifts.

In an e-mail, Goldilocks Corporate Communications Manager Arle Azela G. Delos Santos said the company planned to open up to 45 stores this year, just like in the past three years.

Goldilocks, which now has 267 stores nationwide, thinks the market was not yet saturated. "Growth prospects for both company-owned stores and franchisees remain vigorous," she added.

Meanwhile, rival Red Ribbon Bakeshop plans to maintain its pace of 25 new branches per year, something it had managed since it was bought by Jollibee Food Corp. three years ago, Marketing Director Albert C. Cuadrante said.

"We have over 200 stores roughly split evenly between franchisees and the company, but with the opening of new outlets, Red Ribbon may end up with three-fifths of the stores," he added.

He also said the company might set up new branches in Bicol, Northern Luzon and the Visayas.

Ms. Delos Santos said Goldilocks was also exploring areas outside Metro Manila, where almost a quarter of its stores are located.

"We see a lot of potential in areas outside the National Capital Region. Specifically, we are exploring regions like Central Luzon, Southern Luzon, Metro Cebu, Leyte and Samar, Metro Davao, and Cotabato/Saranggani as impending expansion areas for our Goldilocks stores," she said.

The Go-led company, which has 21 stores in the West Coast of North America, also plans to expand its international presence by targeting countries with large Filipino populations.

"Our expansion plans certainly include our international growth, and we are examining first the US East Coast, Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia" Ms. Delos Santos said.

Red Ribbon’s Mr. Cuadrante said the company intends to increase its 30 stores in the US, but declined to provide details. The company, he added, hoped to achieve double-digit growth this year.

Meanwhile, Ms. Delos Santos said Goldilocks would seek to maintain its 12% to 14% sales growth for the last three years for 2009.

"In spite of these so-called difficult times, Filipinos will still celebrate special occasions, have family gatherings, bring [small gifts] to their loved ones, and crave for good, home-cooked food in the convenience of a quick-service restaurant," she said.

"We will definitely drum up sales by developing innovative and pioneering products, inspiring marketing campaigns and promotions, and expanding our distribution channels," Ms. Delos Santos said.

She said Goldilocks had always managed to hike sales even during economic gloom in the past.

Red Ribbon, on the other hand, is banking on its emphasis on quality to lure customers.

"We have been harping on our quality and we believe that during these tough times — with people more discriminating with their purchases — we have a higher chance of being preferred," Mr. Cuadrante said.

In a telephone interview yesterday, ATR KimEng analyst Lovell A. Sarreal said fastfood companies are generally resilient even during a slow economy since their products are basic needs.

"Food companies maintained their sales level last year even when the economy was slowing down as seen by the decrease in the gross domestic product," he said.

Mr. Sarreal noted that dropping commodity prices also bode well for the fastfood business.

"Unlike oil companies, which roll back their prices when world prices go down, food companies do not usually do that, which may allow them to recover lost margins from last year," he added.

Davao makes it to British Aerospace’s shortlist
Companies
Written by Manuel T. Cayon / Reporter
Tuesday, 20 January 2009 20:30

DAVAO CITY—A British company has shortlisted Davao as a possible site of its manufacturing facility for galleys and other components of future Airbus planes.

The British Aerospace (BAe) is currently looking for a site in Asia to put up this facility, valued at $40 million. An information released by the British Embassy has indicated the Philippines as one of the countries it shortlisted, the Board of Investments (BOI) said.

Gil Dureza, BOI chief in three Mindanao regions, said BAe has reportedly mentioned this city as its preferred investment site.

Dureza said he received on Tuesday the BOI letter from Eries M. Cagatan, officer-in-charge of the agency’s international marketing department, saying that the BOI office in Makati City has received “communication from the British Embassy in Manila relating to the interest of the BAe of establishing a $40-million manufacturing facility of galleys and other items for the next generation of Airbus aircraft.”

“The company is considering five possible candidate locations in Asia for this facility, the Philippines being one of the short-listed countries,” Cagatan said in his letter.

The BOI letter said the company is “in the midst of manufacturing the most advanced series of new-generation passenger aircraft, most especially the Airbus 380, the single-largest passenger aircraft to date.”

BAe is a leading UK manufacturer of aircraft interior products and solutions for the commercial, business jet, and military aircraft markets. It is one of the major contractors and partners in EADS or the European Air Defense System.

The BOI here has been asked to furnish information needed by BAe, and include details on transportation and presence of support industry. On the first item, the company said it would like to know the city’s road network, the “typical costs and transit times for both passenger and freight services to nearest airport and seaport;” the airports and seaports, specifically the distance from the potential facility and the details of both the airport and the seaport handling capacity; and the shipping costs from local seaport to nearest seaport to Toulouse, Marseilles in France.

BAe also requested details of the support industries—specifically those involved in the manufacture of metal, machined parts, fabricated metal parts, electrical work like loom or harness manufacture, electrical cable printing, plastics, vacuum-formed parts, composite and injection moulding.

Dureza said that the company has initially identified three sites: the Hijo Port town in Madaum, Tagum City, which recently was awarded accreditation by the Export Processing Zone Authority; as well as Santa Cruz town and Digos City, both located Davao del Sur.

anyway, i think this is a long shot... Davao may have the manpower but they don't have the right infrastructure and the local schools are still not "producing" tech-oriented graduates ... puro nursing for export ang nasa-isip ng mga schools dito  let see ... sa tutuo lang hindi ako masaya dahil alam ko kahit na nasa short list tayo, pag ang kompetensya natin eh malaysia or indonesia (already an aircraft-producing-country), matatalo tayo

BOI-Davao eyes P3.5 billion worth of investment prospects this year
Mindanao Times
January 20, 2009

A 3,400-hectare banana plantation stands as the biggest project in the P3.5 billion total worth of investment leads for 2009 in Region 11, Board of Investments (BOI)-Davao extension office chief Gil Dureza said.

Speaking at the Davao City Business Forum yesterday at The MediaSpa, SM City Davao, Dureza said the banana plantation investment prospect being eyed in Davao Oriental and Davao del Sur is a foreign led business venture.

A mining project being eyed in Mati, Davao Oriental and Agusan by an Australian firm ranks as the second biggest project in the said investment prospects.

Dureza said the BOI-Davao list of investment prospects for 2009 also include projects on photo editing, coffee processing, plastic recycling, hotel, and retirement village.

A positive outlook for investments this year is anchored on the inquiries being received by BOI-Davao.

Starting November last year, BOI-Davao has been receiving inquiries about potential investments in Mindanao at an average of two to three foreign companies per week, Dureza said.

Most of the inquiries are from the Information Communication Technology (ICT) and banana sectors in foreign countries such as India, Australia, America and Europe, Dureza said.

He said BOI remains optimistic about investments this year although it anticipates the impact of the global financial crunch to worsen this year and the succeeding years, Dureza said.

The value of listed BOI-Davao registered investments last year posted P3.2 billion as against the P7.7 billion registered in 2007.

Dureza said the investments, which were registered in 2007 are mostly power plant projects making the total value of investments bigger compared to that of last year. Judy Quiros

Davao of course! They were supposed to start with its construction immediately after Pryce Tower when the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis hit. This project, along with the MMG Towers, were among those scrapped during that time.

Hopefully, the present Global Financial Crisis will not repeat what the Asian Financial Crisis did to Davao City. With the way things are going, Davao City has one of the most enviable positions to "weather the storm" than those of other cities.

Sayang jud bai. Kay in the case of MMG Towers, nag formal groundbreaking na gud sila. I can also recall one more project that was scrapped - the 12-storey Insular Life Building that was supposed to be constructed at Bonifacio Extension (where Fernandez School of Music stood). The rendering for that project was already displayed in the area when the crisis hit. :ohno:

Yep, a lot of economists predict Davao to be able to minimize the effect of the global financial crisis because Davao's economy is not dependent on exports and tourism. And the reason why construction of malls, hotels, and condominiums are still in full swing is mainly because of domestic demand.

BOI-Davao scouts area for $40M British aircraft plant
BY JUDY QUIROS

A leading aircraft production and design company in the United Kingdom has displayed interest in establishing a $40 million manufacturing facility in the Philippines.

Board of Investments (BOI)-Manila OIC director Eries Cagatan, in a letter addressed to BOI-Davao extension office chief Gil Dureza, said the British Embassy in Manila informed them on the interest of British Aerospace (BAE) to expand in Asia.

He also informed Dureza that the Philippines is one of the five short-listed countries in Asia where BAE is eyeing to put up the facility.

BAE is a leading UK designer and manufacturer of aircraft interior products and solutions for commercial, business jet, and military aircraft markets.

Cagatan in his letter said BAE is one of the major contractors and partners in European Air Defense System (EADS), which is in the midst of manufacturing the most advanced series of new generation of passenger aircraft most especially the Airbus A380, which is the single largest passenger aircraft today.

Dureza said BOI-Manila sought the assistance of BOI-Davao extension office to provide them information on specific details and potential areas in Region 11, in which to put up the facility.

Dureza said they have identified Hijo Port in Tagum City, Sta. Cruz in Davao del Sur and Digos City as possible areas to build the said facility.

BOI-Manila also sought Dureza to equip them some information on specific details among others road network, airports, seaports and shipping costs in Region 11, particularly in the identified areas.

BOI- Davao extension office covers Regions 11, 12 and 9.

BOI-Davao will also assist BOI-Manila in furnishing BAE information on other issues such as the presence of support industry including company names, contact details, and capacity of firms engage in the manufacture of metal machined parts, fabricate metal parts, electrical work, and the like in the said identified investment areas.

Dureza said they still have to check on the availability of the above details, but assured that the region is capable of providing such support industries

Mao jud......Im not sure if u guys are familiar with this or if other realtors and brokers are but we (my other friends na nasa real estate) believe on this 7 to 10 year real estate cycle. Track back what happened in the Philippine real estate industry 7 to 10 years ago, then how bout 7 to 10 years before that, and so forth...you'll notice a cycle. I personally believe that the on going boom in the real estate industry in the philippines is now once again entering a downslope. Ofcourse d naman mawawala ang mga investors and buyers, pero mas mahihirapan lang magbenta ngayon than the last years.

Dazzling Davao

By Gloria Ramos
First Posted 14:27:00 01/05/2009

For bakasyonistas seeking adventure and close connection with nature, there could not have been a better choice for a family vacation. Davao City is a peaceful eco-tourism destination that offers fresh air, clean waterways and lots of nature adventure activities. Thanks to our dear Michelle, who suggested the place and acted as our official travel organizer. The junior and (nearing) senior citizens all came back to Cebu refreshed – with renewed vim and vigor – and with beautiful memories of Davao City lingering in the mind.

It was my fifth visit to Davao City. I am amazed at rediscovering its seemingly endless list of natural attractions. Looking back, I am astonished at Davao’s incredible transformation. In my first solo trip in 1981 to effect a foreclosure of mortgage, I was holed up in a hotel for more than a week. I had to await the result of the negotiations taking place between the mortgagee financial institution in Metro Manila and the mortgagor. At that time, Davao had serious peace-and-order problems and mobility was severely restricted. Each day was like an excruciating eternity. In my homesick moments, I vowed never to go back to the land of durian, batik and ethnic accessories.

When I returned two decades after, it was a vibrant and pulsating Davao City that I saw, like a Phoenix rising magnificently from the ashes. I was totally impressed at the change, thanks to its stakeholders. Davao City’s civil society is dynamic and actively engaged in governance.

The local lawmaking body is a trailblazer in crafting significant ordinances, such as the Children’s Welfare Code and the Women’s Code. The Anti-smoking Ordinance was enacted in 2002, way ahead of the national law, Republic Act 9211, the Tobacco Regulation Act of 2003. Davao City is said to be the only city in the country strictly implementing it.

When our plane taxied at the runway of the Davao International Airport, the passengers, especially the smokers, were warned that “Davao City” is a “strictly no-smoking city.” This is a perfect accolade to give the Davaoeños and the leaders of the city. They are obviously filled with a strong sense of responsibility for the wellness of people and duly armed with the discipline to make the anti-smoking law a reality.

Davao City is one of the few local government units (LGUs) that exercise its tremendous powers and responsibilities under section 16 of the Local Government Code by enacting an ordinance banning the aerial spraying of pesticides. The LGUs’ mandate includes the promotion of the general welfare of the constituents and maintenance of a healthful and balanced ecology. The case is now pending at the Supreme Court as the affected company questioned the validity of the ordinance.

In 2008, Davao City scored the highest in “the most competitive city in the Philippines” category – based on the survey of the Asian Institute of Management (AIM). The Philippine Cities Competitiveness Ranking Project 2007 results revealed Davao City beating local government units in Metro Manila and, yes, in Metro Cebu as well. Another feather in the cap of the city is its being one of only three areas in the world, aside from the US and Canada, to have the Integrated Emergency Response System 911.

Davao’s secret? It is good governance, as James, my nephew, would repeatedly remind us. No mean feat indeed in a nation where people are said to treat traffic regulations as mere signs and suggestions.

Our adventure in Davao City started with a visit to the must-see Philippine Eagle Center in the Malagos watershed area, to appreciate our forest and our amazing Philippine Eagle (Pithecophaga jefferyi). Named after Jeffery Whitehead, the father of John Whitehead, the English explorer and naturalist who collected the original specimen, the Philippine Eagle is considered among the tallest, rarest, largest and most powerful birds in the world. The 2007 International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List Category included it as critically endangered. The IUCN reported that fewer than 250 adult Pithecophaga jefferyi, with a 2-meter (6.6-feet) wingspan are estimated to be left in the Philippines.

Our national bird, the haring ibon, is a magnificent sight. Alas, the world is in danger of losing it due to deforestation, mudslides and poaching. The Philippine Eagle Center is at the frontline in the conservation of the Philippine eagle and protection of its habitat. It has successfully bred Philippine eagles in captivity and released three to the wild. It is rather sad that one eagle died by electrocution and another one was shot by a hunter.

We also toured the People’s Park, a park within the city where families congregate, a brainchild of Mayor Rody Duterte who has certainly made Davao what it is today – dynamic, proactive, bustling and sustainable.

Then off we went to Zip Line of Outland Adventure. Dubbed as the longest and fastest zip line in Asia, the place was accessible and can be reached just minutes from Davao City.

Until we reached the place, the seniors could not even imagine what a zip line was. The sight of young ladies and gentlemen flying like superman on the aerial cable was enough reason for the adults to instantly volunteer as “photographers and video recorders” on the ground – to capture the exhilarating moments for our more daring and adventurous travel companions. Definitely finding the activity a heady experience, they were all beaming when they rejoined us.

Then, we had the highlight of our nature adventure: the much-anticipated whitewater rafting event on the Davao River. This time the adults were prepared psychologically, emotionally and physically for their first rafting trip.

For a minimum of five persons per boat, we cruised for three hours and worked together as a team, through 24 rapids from Barangay (village) Tamugan to Barangay Lacson in Calinan District. The thick foliage, the flying birds and the cliffs provided a wonderful backdrop to the exhilarating experience of a lifetime. As added bonus, we did not find a single plastic bag thrown into or floating on the river.

We went home tired but filled with wonderful memories of Davao City in this beautiful megadiversity archipelago called the Philippines. Living in such unparalleled beauty is certainly one of life’s great blessings.

btw sir Ibex puede diay mangotrata ang LGU ?

The Asphalt plant is operating under the Economic Enterpise ng LGU. Pwede man mag indulge ang isang LGU ug income generating ventures basta lang ang services and products nga gina offer will follow the procurement laws. Di lang kaayo ko keen ani pero pwede ang LGU to LGU cooperation.

Davao City’s China Town has the distinction of being the biggest in the country,an official of the Davao China Town Development Council (DCDC) said yesterday.

DCDC official Amado So said the city’s China Town is the only one with wide streets compared with other China Towns in the Philippines.

He also said it is the only China Town bordered by numerous business establishments, mostly Chinese-owned, including about 30 banks.

It is also the only one that has a wharf, Sta. Ana Wharf.

China Town sits within a 50-hectare land along R. Magsaysay Avenue.

In terms of income, China Town is an economic driver of the city.

Board of Investments (BOI)-Davao extension office chief Gil Dureza said of the 18 investments valued at P3.2 billion which were registered with BOI-Davao in 2008, eight investments valued at P800 million or 23 percent of the total investments are Chinese-owned companies.

China Town will take center stage from January 24 to 26 for the celebration of the Chinese New Year.

So said there are about 200,000 pure and Filipino-Chinese nationals residing in the city.

He said they are expecting a number of their clan to join the event as they have also tapped Chinese families from other areas such as the provinces of Bukidnon and Cotabato.

The opening salvo of the celebration is a motorcade around the city on January 24 at 8:30 a.m. with drumbeaters from Manila.

A three-day night market at China Town starting from January 24 to 26, street dancing by various Chinese schools, Chinese culture exhibit, and Taoist Temples visitation will also highlight the event.

The Samadhi concert at Magsaysay Park 8 p,m. on Chinese New Year’s Day on Saturday will culminate the three-day festivities.

Oscar Casaysay, City Hall’s community relations program coordinator, said a virtual fireworks display will uplift the spirits of the Chinese community which traditionally celebrates New Year with explosions to drive bad spirits away.

Dazzling Davao

As added bonus, we did not find a single plastic bag thrown into or floating on the river.

Chinese festival down to 3 days

THE week-long celebration of the Chinese Festival in the city was cut down to only three days as organizers ran short of finances and time.

Oscar Casaysay of the City Mayor’s Office said the original plan to celebrate the Chinese New Year starting January 24 until the 31st of the month was changed to January 24-31 due to the lack of material time and budget for the celebration.
While Chinese fraternities like Kaisa Foundation helped raised money, the fund was not sufficient to carry out all the initial plans.
But Casaysay assured it will remain as festive and colorful as earlier agreed. There will still be Chinese lanterns to brighten up the streets of the Chinatown measuring about 50 hectares.
Amado So, an official of the Davao China Town Development Council, said the main features of the revelry are the night markets, Chinese dance presentations, documentary showing, and other activities like dog shows and air soft tournaments.
Because fireworks and pyrotechnics are banned in the city, and since it is an essential part in the Chinese culture to drive away the bad spirits, the Chinese community will instead use drums, in preparation for the council’s plan to make Davao City as the “drum city” of Southern Mindanao.
“We are even planning to purchase more drums in the future,” he said.
Casaysay said Davaoeños will have to settle for watching fireworks display on the screen as the city will set show satellite feed of Chinese celebrations in other parts of the world as a countdown to the Chinese new year.
The Chinese festival, he said, is not exclusive to the Chinese residents of the city as indigenous peoples and the Muslim community were also invited during the presentations. Five Chinese schools have signified intention to join the festivity.
Other activities related to the celebration are the exhibit about Tsinoys at Museo Dabawenyo on January 30 and the launching of the Unity Arc along Magsaysay Avenue on January 31.
In the long run, Casaysay said, Chinatown will be revived as a vibrant area of economic activity like in the 1980s.To date, old Chinese families took it upon themselves to reconstruct old Chinese structures. So said Chinatown is the biggest in the country in terms of land area and they are working hard to develop it further. Last January 5, Mayor Rodrigo Duterte signed Executive Order No. 01, creating the executive committee of the Davao Chinese New Year Festival.
